Brit tourist one of four to drown in three days at same beach

Two people including a British holidaymaker have died after trying to rescue two children who were in difficulties in the sea

at the Roqueta beach in Guardamar. The 52-year-old rushed into the water to aid the youngsters, aged six and seven, along with others.

But he ended up losing his life alongside a Polish Good Samaritan aged 46. Two men aged 39 and 22 and a woman aged around 20, also had to receive medical treatment, with two being taken to hospital with breathing difficulties following the drama on Friday.

All of them were part of a group of bathers who jumped into the water when they saw the youngsters in serious trouble and unable to get out due to strong waves and a strong current. Luckily, the children were finally able to get out of the water safely. It is not known if the British man, believed to be a tourist, was in any way related to the children.

The double tragedy occurred around midday at La Roqueta beach in Guardamar de Segura south of Alicante during gusting winds of up to nearly 60mph.

The following day the same beach claimed the life of a 77-year-old man while swimming. The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) received the notification at 3:30 pm. The victim had been pulled out of the water by other people who were on the beach and was unconscious. Despite medics

performing CPR there was no response and the man was declared dead at the scene.

This is the fourth death on La Roqueta beach in just three days as a 68-year- old Israeli man died on Thursday. There is currently no lifeguard service at this beach as the summer season is not yet officially underway.

With four deaths in the last 48 hours, there have now been nine drownings in Alicante Province within

the first seven days of June. The death toll at La Roqueta adds to five drownings last weekend and Monday on the Costa Blanca. Lives were lost at beaches in Benissa, La Marina(Elche), Calpe, Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja.

Another solar farm threatens the Sierra Escalona

A new solar plant is threatening the protected landscape of the Sierra Escalona national park. The O cial Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Province have published the photovoltaic project called “PSF Orihuela Belmonte”, proposed by Villenlar. The project would see 8 megawatts of power generated for an investment of 6.4 million euros. The facility, planned to the south of the municipality of Orihuela, near San Miguel de Salinas , would occupy an area of 163,690 square meters.

The solar farm would be located next to the Itel macroplant, which planned 242,256 panels spread over 182 hectares,

which the Ministry for the Ecological Transition demolished in January 2023 with unfavourable reports from the Generalitat. The allegations from Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE), Friends of the Southern Alicante Wetlands (AHSA) and the Neighbourhood Association of San Miguel de Salinas made against this plant will now be raised again.

This is the 14th plant planned in the area and so far none have been authorised and nine have already been denied (six by the Generalitat and three by the Ministry).

The Sierra Escalona environment is one of the few areas that the Bonelli’s eagle exists on the Peninsula. The communities

of birds of prey such as the common harrier, the short-toed eagle and the eagle owl are also found here. Among the predators, there are wild cats (which have one of the best populations in the southeast of Iberia located in Escalona), genets and badgers.

The landscape hallmarks of the area give rise to a type of habitat in which the alternation of pine forest formations with the plains in which installing crop elds is of vital importance for the development of many species of birds of prey found in this habitat, as well as for the necessary conditions to be met both to nest in the most sheltered forest areas and to obtain food in the large cultivated areas.

Flamingos return to La Mata

After a few years of absence, the amingos have now returned to the Mata lagoon. The reason for this abandonment was the drastic reduction of brine shrimp, a small arthropod that thrives in this type of water, its main food source.

The Southern Alicante Wetlands Association (AHSA) explained that the La Mata lagoon functions as a large saline concentrator pond, fed with seawater, which when it reaches su cient salinity is transferred through a channel to the neighbouring Torrevieja lagoon where the salt is harvested. The very dynamics of salt production means that at certain times the salinity can become very high, so the density of brine shrimp decreases

drastically and with it disappears the species that feed on it, such as the amingo.

Traditionally, signi cant uctuations in the populations of these birds have been recorded, linked to uctuations in the water levels of this wetland and with it the salinity of its waters, although in recent years this problem has worsened, mainly after the oods caused by DANA in 2019, when the Torrevieja lagoon, a wetland that has a much larger hydrographic basin than that of the La Mata lagoon, received a signi cant volume of rainwater that made salt collection extremely di cult.

To lower the water level of the Torrevieja lagoon, the salt industry transferred signi cant volumes of water to the

La Mata lagoon, reversing the water management that was traditionally carried out.

This, together with the fact that since those dates very low water levels have been maintained in the La Mata lagoon, has caused the virtual disappearance of the amingos and the rest of the species linked to the brine shrimp, In recent weeks, the salt industry has begun to introduce seawater to La Mata, through the Acequión canal, which has resulted a gradual return of the amingo and slender-billed gulls. Recent head counts show a signi cant increase in the number of amingos, with 620 specimens recorded on 1st June and 1,130 on 4th June.

Children’s online safety to be protected by new law

The Spanish government has introduced a comprehensive new law aimed at protecting children from online threats. The proposed legislation includes virtual restraining orders for felons, raises the minimum age for opening social media accounts, and mandates health screenings for teenagers to detect related emotional disorders.

“The health, well-being, and security of our children, as well as the tranquillity of our families, are at stake,” Justice Minister Félix Bolaños declared on Tuesday while presenting the proposal at a post-Cabinet press conference. The coalition government will need support from other parties to pass the law.

This proposal comes in response to increasing public concern following several cases of sexual violence and abuse linked to the internet.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has warned that Spain is facing an “authentic epidemic” of pornography targeting minors.

Madrid Court quizzes Prime Minister’s wife in corruption investigation

In an effort to combat these issues, the Spanish government has already banned cellphones in elementary schools and restricted their use in high schools to educational purposes. Reports indicate that the average age for children to receive their first mobile phone in Spain is 11 years old.

The new bill aims to amend the criminal code to define specific crimes for distributing pornographic material to minors and creating “deepfake” images using artificial intelligence, particularly when these images are used for sexual abuse. The bill also addresses “grooming” by sexual predators attempting to gain the trust of minors.

For convicted criminals who use the internet to commit crimes, the proposed law includes virtual restraining orders that would prevent them from contacting their victims online and ban them

Current statistics indicate that approximately 25% of children aged 12 and under and 50% of those aged 15 and under have been exposed to online pornography.

from certain online activities.

The legislation also seeks to raise the minimum age for opening a social media account from 14 to 16. Technology companies will be required to implement age verification and parental controls on social media and video-sharing platforms.

Additionally, the bill mandates training for teachers on how to educate students about internet safety and calls for public awareness campaigns on the dangers of digital addiction, abuse, and privacy concerns.

“This is about education,” stated Catalina Perazzo of Save The Children, a nonprofit organisation consulted by the government while drafting the bill. “In the same way that sexual education with a focus on emotional health is critical to preventing sexual abuses, the responsible and ethical use of digital applications must be part of the curriculum,” Perazzo told Spanish state broadcaster RTVE.

A Madrid court has issued a summons for Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, to appear on 5th July as part of a preliminary corruption investigation into her business connections. Gómez is summoned “as an investigated party” in a probe into suspected influence peddling and corruption.

This development comes nearly a week after Spain’s public prosecutors recommended dismissing the probe.

The decision to proceed with the investigation represents a setback for Sánchez and a boost for his right-wing and far-right opponents, who see it as validation of their claims of government corruption. Court documents indicate “evidence of an alleged criminal offence” that “goes beyond mere suspicion,” justifying the continuation of the investigation. This finding contradicts a recent Guardia Civil police report that found no evidence of criminal activity.

The court opened the investigation into Gómez for suspected influence peddling and corruption on 16th April, following a complaint filed by Manos Limpias (“Clean Hands”), an anti-graft NGO linked to the far-right. Manos Limpias has previously filed numerous unsuccessful lawsuits against politicians.

The court is investigating two letters of support Gómez allegedly provided in 2020 for a joint venture bidding for several public contracts. The joint venture’s main shareholder was consultant Carlos Barrabes, who had connections to a department at Madrid’s Complutense University where Gómez worked. The venture won contracts worth €10.2 million, beating 20 rivals, despite not being the lowest bid but receiving top marks in subjective appraisal sections.

Gómez has not publicly commented on the case, but Sánchez has condemned it as a political effort to “harass and discredit” him by media “heavily influenced by the right and far-right.” Sánchez previously suggested he might resign over the issue but ultimately decided to stay on, a move the opposition criticised as political theatre. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has called for Sánchez’s resignation over the investigation into his wife’s business dealings.

“Spain deserves a worthy premier and Sánchez is not one,” PP Secretary-General Cuca Gamara wrote on X, adding: “It’s not mud, it’s corruption.”

Gómez, 49, does not hold public office and maintains a low profile. She continued her career in fundraising for NGOs after her husband became prime minister in 2018.

Five arrested for a robbery at gunpoint

O cers of the National Police have arrested ve individuals in Orihuela involved in a robbery with violence and two robberies with force in homes. These criminals, belonging to a criminal group, used weapons to intimidate their victims and were identi ed thanks to the great expertise of the investigators, and the collection of information and analysis thereof. The advanced techniques used to study the evidence were relevant to clarifying the facts.

The investigation began after the complaint at the end of last year from a couple who told the agents that they had su ered a violent robbery at their home by three men. According to what the complainants told the agents, when they were at their home in Orihuela, someone knocked on the door and after opening it, three men violently broke into their home, one of the assailants carrying a gun and another of them carrying a knife.

According to the victims’ story, they experienced moments of terror when they threatened the father of the family and his wife. One of the attackers pointed the gun at the father and immobilized him by handcu ng him, while another placed a knife on his mother’s neck. The third o ender searched the house looking for money and valuables. These acts were captured by the home’s video surveillance system, which was crucial to the investigation.

Judicial Police o cers of the National Police carried out a meticulous investigation. They analyzed the recordings from the home’s security cameras and carried out technical inspections with the help of specialized Scienti c Police agents. Through the

exhaustive analysis of the recovered video recordings, and carrying out a visual comparison of the perpetrators’ faces, frame by frame, it was possible to identify those directly responsible for the crime.

Thanks to this meticulous investigation, the National Police was able to discover that the alleged perpetrators were also involved in two other robberies with force that did not seem to be related to this violent robbery. The robberies were committed in two di erent homes in Orihuela, where to access the properties they used speci c tools that allowed them to force the homes to access their interior.

The arrests were made once the full identity of the alleged perpetrators was obtained. The National Police established a device over the areas where those investigated moved, proceeding to arrest them in the towns and districts of Beniel, El Mojón and Los Ramos in the region of Murcia. During them, the authors did not provide any type of relevant data that

could help the investigation.

When house searches were carried out in El Mojón, Alquerias and Los Ramos, some of the objects were found that directly related them to the crimes. Among them, the blank revolver used in the violent robbery, a compressed air pistol, several shotgun cartridges, long gun and short gun cartridges, and a pair of handcu s with their keys were recovered. It was also possible to nd the clothing that one of the detainees was wearing during the violent robbery, and the tools used to carry out the violent robberies.

The detainees, three men and two women, aged between 26 and 42 years old, and all of Spanish nationality, were placed at the disposal of the Investigating Court acting as guard in Orihuela. The Judicial Authority, which had already opened previous proceedings, ordered the imprisonment of three of the detainees, while the other two were placed under precautionary measures.

The Vega Baja turns blue in the European elections

La Vega Baja has been completely dyed blue in the European Elections held this Sunday, June 9. The Popular Party has won in all the municipalities of the region, except in San Isidro with the PSOE. The PP has also swept all the provinces and large cities of the Valencian Community.

The PP has won the European elections in the Valencian Community with 35.85% of the votes and 703,886 votes. The popular ones rise 13.28 points compared to ve years ago and the PSOE, which in 2019 was the winning party of these elections in the Valencian Community, remains in second position, with 31.41

percent and 616,658 votes, going down 1.56 percent compared to the previous call.

Vox is the third force, with 11.51% of the votes, and Compromís-Sumar remains in fourth position with 7.63% of the votes. In the province of Alicante he has won with 38.26% of the votes. As for the large cities , the PP has won in the three provincial capitals and in Elche, in addition to also winning in Torrevieja , Torrent, Orihuela , Gandía, Paterna and Benidorm. Spain to join Israel genocide case

Spain has become the first European nation to request permission from a United Nations court to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. South Africa initially brought the case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) late last year, asserting that Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute a breach of the genocide convention.

The ICJ has ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, but stopped short of mandating a ceasefire for the entire enclave. Despite the court’s directive, Israel has continued its offensive.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez affirmed Spain’s commitment to justice, stating, “There should be no doubt that Spain will remain on the right side of history.”

Several countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya, and the Palestinians, are also awaiting approval from the ICJ to join the

case against Israel.

Israel has refuted the genocide allegations, maintaining that its military operations are a justified response to Hamas’s attacks on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of 250 hostages.

In retaliation, Israel’s air and ground assaults have led to the deaths of 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians.

The ICJ, located in The Hague, Netherlands, is expected to take years to deliver a final verdict on the matter. If Spain’s request is approved, the country will be able to submit written arguments and participate in public hearings related to the case. This move is part of a broader effort by Sánchez’s left-wing coalition to support peace initiatives in Gaza.

In Spain, Sánchez’s stance has found significant backing, particularly among university students who have mirrored the protests of their American counterparts.

The ICJ previously allowed 32 countries, including Spain, to join Ukraine’s case against Russia, which alleges that Russia falsely accused Ukraine of genocide to justify its invasion.

As the preliminary hearings in the genocide case against Israel proceed, Spain’s immediate objective is to increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to comply with the court’s interim measures to cease the violence in Rafah.

Recently, Spain, Ireland, and Norway formally recognized a Palestinian state on May 28, joined by Slovenia this week. Over 140 countries, representing more than two-thirds of the UN, have recognised Palestinian statehood, although major Western powers, including the United States, have not.

A criminal group that stole and falsified vehicles in Vega Baja has been dismantled

The Civil Guard and the National Police have dismantled a criminal group operating in the provinces of Alicante and Malaga. This group targeted medium to high-end vehicles belonging to refugees from Ukraine, stealing these cars for subsequent counterfeiting and sale across Europe. When some victims sought help on social media to locate their stolen vehicles, the perpetrators contacted them, demanding a ransom of 10,000 to 20,000 euros in cryptocurrency for the car’s return.

The agents have identified 25 victims of car theft in various locations, including Alicante, Calpe, Pilar de la Horadada, El Verger, Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, and Villajoyosa in Alicante; Marbella in Málaga; and San Pedro del Pinatar in the Region of Murcia. The total value of the stolen vehicles is estimated at one million euros, with individual car values ranging from 30,000 to 90,000 euros, depending on the brand and model.

The perpetrators executed the thefts at night and immediately transported the stolen cars to Málaga, often before the owners even realized their cars were missing. They used main highways and were preceded by a shuttle vehicle to avoid

detection by the Civil Guard or Police. Once in Málaga, the cars were temporarily parked to ensure they were not being tracked. Following this “cooling” period, the criminals altered the vehicle identification numbers, falsified license plates and documentation, and then sold the cars secondhand across Europe using a mobile messaging app. The operation resulted in six arrests and five individuals under investigation, all men

aged between 34 and 54, of Lithuanian, Russian, and Ukrainian nationalities. They face charges for 25 vehicle thefts, 11 extortion crimes, document falsification, and membership in a criminal organization.

In total, 15 stolen vehicles valued at over 300,000 euros have been recovered. Additionally, 140,000 euros were seized along with equipment used for vehicle theft and document falsification.

Sterling rounded up on a strong note at the end of May, with GBP/EUR peaking at 1.1780, the highest level since August 2022. However, this peak still indicates a resistance level, similar to last summer’s high, suggesting that signi cant market events may be needed to push past this psychological position. The pound was up against most other major currencies, including the dollar, which saw GBP/USD jump over 3 cents in three weeks up to just under 1.28.

A key factor behind the pound’s improvement appears to be the Bank of England’s changing stance on interest rates. With the UK’s headline in ation dropping to 2.3%, slightly higher than expected, it has pushed back the chances of an early interest rate cut from the Bank of England. In our May market update, we reported market predictions of over 50% in favour of a cut at June’s MPC meeting. Expectations have now reduced to less than 10%, with some forecasters believing August or September is when the base levels will be dropped from the current 5.25%.

Meanwhile, UK politics continues to see activity from both the Labour and Conservative parties in the lead-up to the 4th July election. In a recent political tussle last week, long-serving Labour member Diane Abbott has con rmed she will be standing as a Labour candidate following a row that overshadowed much of the campaigning last week.

Historically, the pound tends to underperform ahead of political events*, as seen over the years with Brexit and other election events. This pattern suggests that we might see the pound fall away from the recent highs. Either way, after relatively little volatility so far this year, more movement could be on the cards.

*The Sunak-Truss leadership contest saw a 1.5 cent drop for GBP/EUR in the lead up to the decision in September 2022.

EUR The European Central Bank (ECB) became the rst major central bank to cut interest rates yesterday, in a move widely anticipated by markets. Policymakers

GBP / EUR UPDATE

cut rates by 0.25% marking the rst rate cut by the ECB in ve years and signalling the end of the monetary tightening cycle that began in July 2022.

The decision followed the Bank of Canada’s decision to also reduce rates on Wednesday 5th June.

Although EU in ation has dropped by over 2.5% since September 2023, in ation is expected to stay above target well into next year. Policymakers revised their in ation projections for the Eurozone raising forecasts for both 2024 and 2025 from 2.3% to 2.5% and 2% to 2.2% respectively. Economic growth is projected to improve, reaching 0.9% in 2024, 1.4% in 2025, and 1.6% in 2026.

ECB President Christine Lagarde’s subsequent comments appeared to express ongoing caution and indicated that monetary policy would remain restrictive for ”as long as necessary”. She emphasised the Governing Council’s commitment to ensuring in ation returns to its target of 2%.

There was little reaction from the euro as the cut was already priced in thanks to the clear, ongoing narrative from EU policymakers that has helped stabilise expectations around interest rate changes.

From an interest rate and economics perspective, it is possible the EU and Canada could start a chain reaction as we witness the rst interest rate cuts in the developed world. The UK, US, and Europe had previously followed similar monetary policy trends when both raising and holding rates. If these cuts are well received and avoid any economic scrutiny from markets around their decisions, it could open the door to rate reductions from many other countries.

To nish the week, this morning saw the release of the latest quarterly GDP growth data from the EU. As expected, growth remained stagnant at around 0.3%.

Fake priest defrauds Catral and Bigastro parishes of 15,300 euros using a sick father scam

A 39-year-old man, wanted by a Palma court, has been placed in provisional prison for allegedly posing as a priest to defraud money from priests in small parishes across several Spanish provinces, according to Cadena SER Alicante. The last two scams, investigated by the Civil Guard, occurred in Catral, involving 14,800 euros, and Bigastro, involving an additional 500 euros.

The suspect used the same method each time: appearing at the parish under the false name José Sánchez and asking the priest for nancial help to visit his supposedly sick father in Salamanca.

To gain the trust of the parish priests, he claimed nancial hardship for himself and his family and put them in contact with a supposed priest from Salamanca who con rmed the story by phone. In reality, the scammer himself made the calls, using ecclesiastical jargon to make the story believable.

The investigation by the Almoradí barracks of the Civil Guard of Alicante began last April following a complaint from the parish priest of Catral. Shortly after, the priest of Bigastro reported a similar

scam for 500 euros. The arrested man has a history of similar scams, including nine in parishes across Asturias between March and May 2020.

The Civil Guard is investigating whether he committed more crimes nationwide. At the time of his arrest, he was facing charges for various crimes in courts across Spain, including Algeciras, Santander, Córdoba, Alcázar de San Juan, Lugo, Palma de Mallorca, León, Cangas del Narcea, Alicante, and Huesca.

He had evaded capture due to his lack of a known address.

The investigation is directed

by the Court of Instruction number 1 of Orihuela. The man was arrested on June 4 in Aielo de Malferit (Valencia), where he resided, for alleged continued crimes of fraud, falsi cation of public documents, usurpation of civil status, and for judicial claims from across Spain. During a search of his home, authorities found approximately 7,000 euros in various currencies, gold jewelry, watches, and falsi ed documentation. After being brought before the Valencian court in Ontinyent, the judge ordered his imprisonment.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, and the Councillor for Innovation, Ricardo Recuero, presented last week the Ciberkiosco that has been installed in the City Hall for citizens to perform municipal electronic procedures. Since its launch about a month ago, more than 600 certi cates of registration have been issued.

, for the activation of which we are awaiting authorization from the Treasury Department of the City Council. In addition, in the future it will be possible to add some other simple procedure, such as the presentation of general instance or complaints and suggestions, etc. as long as it does not require a scanner or

Finally, Eduardo Dolon has reported that this is a pilot experience that is giving very good results since its inception, so it is planned to install more cyberkiosks in other municipal o ces to diversify the service, for example, in the peripheral City Council of La Mata.

The councilman of Innovation explained that the procedures available to date are limited to the issuance of certi cates of registration in its variants Individual, Historicalindividual and Collective, the latter in the machine are referenced as “Family”. For the time being, it is not possible to automatically issue the Historical-Collective census certi cate, for which the citizen must contact the Registration Assistance O ces (OAMR) -PROP and La Mataor the Census and Statistics O ce.

On the other hand, the machine has the means to act as a municipal payment point -fees, public prices, nes, etc.-

Fishermans Friends

Saturday 15th June - Channel 4 - 9.00 pm

A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing shermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate “ sh out of water” as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.

The times they are a’changin. So sang Bob Dylan. And changing they certainly are for Age Concern. Their shop in Torrevieja has closed after 18 years of successful trading. However, its faithful customer following need not fear. It is only moving a few kilometres out of town to its NEW SHOP IN SAN LUIS -Plaza Tolosa 1 (Calle Carreño), Urb. San Luis, Torrevieja. ( Between GB Solicitors and The Bodega)

Nothing has changed except the premises. It will continue to o er an extensive range of clothes, accessories and bric-a-brac all to a high standard. And the same friendly band of volunteers will be there to welcome you and to give help and advice if needed. The shop is open 10am -1.30pm Monday to Friday.

But better still, pay them a visit for quality second hand goods and support this very worthwhile charity.

Age Concern opens its new shop in San Luis

For those who frequent their other shop at Los Montesinos nothing has changed. It continues to thrive in the High Street. Both shops welcome donations of clothes etc. New volunteers are always welcome at the shops and also at their Centre in La Siesta.

Everything you ever need to know about Age Concern can be found on our website www. ageconcerncostablancasur.org. Why not follow us on Facebook Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur where you’ll nd up to the minute information and future events which you may wish to attend.

To contact The Centre directly please telephone 966 786 887 Monday – Friday from 10am –1.30pm or leave a message and your call will be returned.

It was a sizzling day for the Age Concern Only Fools and Horses extravaganza

Age Concern held their ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES EXTRAVAGANZA on Saturday 25th May at their Day Centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta. People thronged from far and wide to attend this event and enjoyed browsing the many stalls, taking part in the activities or simply just relaxing in the summer sun with a nice cup of tea.

Even the Barbecue sizzled with Burgers and Sausages.

Del Boy, Rodney and the rest of the volunteers got in the mood, even the Iconic Batman and Robin scene from Only Fools and Horses was played out with Batman and Robin making an appearance.

Everyone was entertained by the Melody Makers who got their audience singing along to popular cockney melodies.

The Melody Makers made a good day great, by presenting Del Boy, aka Malcolm Winstanley, President

of Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur ,with a cheque for €550 raised by them. Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur would like to thank them warmly for their donation and for volunteering to come along and provide such a delightful couple of hours of music.

Age Concern raised a staggering €2,544.75. All the money raised goes straight into the maintenance and upkeep of the Day Centre, providing bene ciaries with daily activities, keeping the two vehicles running, along with ensuring all the valuable services and mobility aids are in ship shape order ready for the vulnerable and our aged population to take advantage of whenever needed.

A special thank you must go to all our volunteers who gave so much of their time to make sure cakes were baked, prizes and bottles donated, costumes made, stalls manned and everything in place to

make this day a success.

Thank you, as well, to all the companies and organisations who donated prizes for our ra e.

Batch of canned tuna recalled by well-known supermarket

Spain is currently facing a food safety alert involving a canned food product distributed nationwide by the popular supermarket chain Carrefour. The Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (Aesan) has issued a warning about the presence of glass fragments in jars of white tuna in olive oil, marketed under the Carrefour Extra brand. The contaminated batch was identified through the company’s own selfmonitoring system and has since been recalled.

Aesan noted that the alert was initially raised by health authorities in the Madrid region, who then communicated it to the coordinated system for the rapid exchange of information (SCIRI). In line with regulatory requirements, Carrefour reported the incident to the food safety authority to prevent the distribution of unsafe food.

Carrefour has proactively

informed its customers about the issue both in stores and on its website.

The affected product is Bonito del Norte in olive oil, sold in a 280-gram glass container, with the barcode 3560071085858, and the lot number L-1827.

The Carrefour website stated, “As part of the selfmonitoring system, the breakage of a container has been detected during the packaging of this batch.” Customers who

have purchased this product are advised not to consume it and to return it to their nearest store for a refund. Carrefour assured that this warning pertains only to the specified batch and reference, and that other products are not affected.

Customers are urged to check their pantries and follow the company’s guidance to ensure their safety.

Kerry Katona looked drastically di erent as she stepped out after revealing the results of her recent nose job which left her in tears.

The media personality, 43, underwent surgery earlier this month, in order to x the damage she caused during years of drug abuse only to be distraught when the operation made her no longer look like her biological father.

Despite the upset Kerry put on a brave face as she was spotted leaving a hair salon in Cheshire on Thursday while debuting a shorter blonde do.The former Atomic Kitten singer cut a casual gure in jeans and a white bomber jacket which she wore over a peach top.

After four hours in the hairdresser’s chair Kerry jumped into her £200K bright green Lamborghini Urus 4x4 which was parked nearby. Kerry previously revealed she was getting a rib removed to make her new nose and would be used to replace cartilage ‘to make it look a bit smaller’.She also clari ed she was in urgent need of the surgery as she had ‘three holes’ inside her nose due to her past cocaine abuse.

Following the procedure Kerry wrote in her New! magazine column: ‘I burst into tears when I got home and saw it, because it looked swollen and di erent.

‘I’m also a little sad because I have the same nose as my biological dad, so it makes me think I’ve lost that link.’ Kerry used a detective agency to track down her biological father Ron Armstrong but he passed away from throat cancer before they were due to meet.

Celine Dion has revealed that singing with sti person syndrome makes her feel like “somebody is strangling her”—months after expressing her determination to return to the stage. The 56-yearold singer was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune neurological disorder in 2022, leading to the cancellation of all future tour dates.

Recently, Dion spoke to the Today show about the agonizing symptoms

of her illness and how it a ects her ability to perform, which is what she loves most.

Dion detailed how the condition impacts her daily life: “If I point my feet, they will stay [stuck in that position], or if I cook—because I love to cook—my ngers, my hands, will get in a position. My feet—it’s [like] cramping, but it’s like [they get] in a position and you cannot unlock them.” She even revealed that the severity of her spasms has led to broken ribs.

In March, Dion shared her hopes of returning to the stage in an Instagram post for International Sti Person Syndrome Awareness Day. She wrote, “Trying to overcome this autoimmune disorder has been one of the hardest experiences of my life, but I remain determined to one day get back onto the stage and to live as normal of a life as possible. I am deeply grateful for the love and support from my kids, family, team, and all of you.”

feel I am the one she is directing her anger at; not her former husband.

It’s hard when we see someone we love being treated badly, and not make comment. You told your sister your true feelings about her husband, and it backfired. You are right; your sister is directing her anger at you. Give the situation some time and your sister may calm down and see things for what they are. You could write her a nice handwritten letter, saying you are sorry for the falling out, and that you will always be there for her if ever she needs you. Then you have left the door open at least. and whoever he shares it with.

After my sister dumped her vile, abusive husband, I was elated. I didn’t hold back when I told her he had never been good enough for her and that I had always disliked him. Then, I told her something that I had known about him for some time; that he had most likely cheated on her; my husband and I saw him out with another woman but we stayed quiet. To my absolute amazement, she turned on me. I honestly thought that telling her was the right things to do. She flew at me, and screamed that I should have told her years ago if I knew something like that. Now she is saying that she suffered unnecessarily and would have thrown him out sooner. Other family members did try to tell her he was no good; but she wouldn’t have it, and I reminded her of this. At the time I felt I could not tell her something like that, and her reaction now proved it. She won’t speak to me, she’s blocked any contact by phone or social media, and now I WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@ COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN TO PREVENT WRINKLES

So, does sunscreen reduce wrinkles? The answer is yes. However, whether your sunscreen minimizes signs of aging or not will greatly depend on the type of sunscreen you’re wearing since not all sunblocks* protect against UV-A rays, the UVs responsible for aging skin.

That said, it’s best to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s 30 SPF or higher that not only prevents sunburns but is also better for the overall longevity of your skin. Does SPF prevent wrinkles? Not exactly, but it’s an essential component of a good,

protective sunscreen.

Some sunscreens will also include a PA+ rating on their packaging. PA+ ratings work in a similar way as SPF but will measure how well the sunscreen shields against UVA rays. If you’re looking for the best sunscreen to use, ensure it has three plus signs or more for maximum protection against the sun.

In addition to choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, you’ll also have to look beyond the SPF rating and read the label of the product. This is because mineral and chemical sunscreens are not created equal, plus the latter could have ingredients that are harmful to your body. Here are a few key di erences:

The village of Campoverde celebrated the 10th anniversary of its annual Open Garden Day on May 28th. The sun shone and hundreds of people toured round six interesting local gardens ranging from the small to very large. It was a hugely enjoyable day with keen gardeners and those who just like to see nice gardens, converging from all over the Costa Blanca area.

The Open Garden Day is organised by James McAllister from Campoverde Church and James says it has two main purposes. “Firstly, we want to celebrate gardens and the craft of gardening. Secondly, Open Garden day helps us to raise funds for the Church’s work with young people in general, and our annual Summer Club in particular”.

In addition to enjoying the gardens, whilst bene tting the work of the Church, many of the gardens also offered a range of refreshments ranging from cream teas, to wine and tea and biscuits. As an added bonus one garden was selling lovely seedlings and

Commenting on the success of the day, James said: “When we closed the gardens at 4pm all the gardeners were exhausted after showing people round and answering questions. But we were pleased that God had provided us with wonderful weather and beautiful gardens to share with others; and we are sure everyone went away happy”.

Chemical sunscreens, which are the most common type of sunscreen, contain several ingredients that may harm your overall health since they are absorbed into the skin to prevent sun damage. This includes ingredients, such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate—just to name a few. While the use of these ingredients is approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the organization is evaluating the e ectiveness and safety of 12 ingredients found in chemical sunscreens.

Mineral sunscreens, or physical sunscreens, contain only two main ingredients— zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—that have been deemed safe and e ective by the FDA. This type of sunscreen works by acting as a mirror that re ects UV rays instead of absorbing them.

To recap, when choosing a sunscreen that can help minimize and prevent wrinkles you should look for broad- spectrum, an SPF of 30 higher, a PA+++ rating, and non-toxic ingredients. The sunscreen you use should also be water- resistant if you’re planning on swimming, sweating, or participating in activities where you may get wet.

How long is cooked rice good for?

Cooked rice typically lasts three to four days when stored at home and four to six days if purchased pre-cooked. Reheating rice and leaving it out can further a ect its shelf life. Here’s more on safely storing rice, why leftover rice can cause illness, and tips to avoid getting sick.

Does Cooked Rice Go Bad?

Yes, cooked rice can spoil, with a freshness window of up to six days. Like many foods, rice can become unsafe if not properly prepared or stored.

How to Tell if Rice is Spoiled

Spoiled rice exhibits speci c changes in appearance, odor, and taste, such as:

Color changes from its freshly prepared state Texture changes, becoming mushy or slimy

Undesirable taste

Unpleasant odor

Why Rice Can Make You Sick

Rice can harbor bacteria, particularly Bacillus cereus, which thrives if rice is not stored and reheated correctly. B. cereus, found in soil, produces toxins causing gastrointestinal illness. Cooked rice, if left unrefrigerated, can allow this bacteria to multiply, and its toxins are heat-resistant.

Rice and Food Poisoning

Eating spoiled rice can lead to food poisoning, an illness caused by consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically resolving within a week. Annually, food poisoning a ects about 48 million people in the U.S.,

causing around 3,000 deaths. Those at higher risk include individuals who are immunocompromised, pregnant, or under ve years old, as their bodies may struggle to ght these harmful organisms. In severe cases, food poisoning can be fatal.

The main consequences of high temperatures

High temperatures can lead to various disorders, including feelings of weakness, confusion, vertigo, headaches, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, and sweating. These symptoms can worsen if appropriate measures are not taken, warns Dr. Asunción Gonzálvez, head of the Internal Medicine Service at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital.

Dr. Gonzálvez advises against engaging in outdoor sports during the hottest parts of the day, especially if you experience intermittent muscle cramps in your extremities post-exercise. These cramps are often linked to accelerated breathing during

exercise and the loss of salts through sweat. They can also be early signs of heat stroke, according to the specialist.

Older adults and children are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. Older adults, especially those with hypertension and on blood pressure medication, are at higher risk. “Some antihypertensive drugs have a diuretic component, which, combined with high temperatures, can lead to greater uid loss,” explains Dr. Gonzálvez. Therefore, it is crucial for older individuals to stay adequately hydrated by drinking at least 1.5 liters of water daily, even if they do not feel thirsty.

Mike Tyson and Jake Paul agree a new date

Since last week’s medical emergency during a ight, Mike Tyson has been in discussions with his closest family about whether ghting Jake Paul is a good idea. Despite these concerns, he has decided to proceed with the ght but postpone the date. Net ix has announced that the ght will not be canceled, only rescheduled. Originally set for July 20 this year, the ght will now take place on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Net ix remains the main organizer and will stream the event live globally.

The co-main event featuring Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is also con rmed to go ahead as planned. Tyson’s medical emergency a ected his training schedule, necessitating the postponement. Despite this update, there are many who strongly oppose the idea of Tyson, now 57, ghting the 27-year-old Paul. Several experts have voiced concerns about the risks involved for Tyson. On Tuesday the 28th if May we fished the 3rd round of the Summer series at the El Bosquet complex near to Crevillent. For various reasons only 12 anglers turned out on what was a glorious sunny day. Upon arrival at 7.30 we found that 4 fishermen were already fishing on pegs 8 to 16 even though we had booked them with the owners. On this occassion we did not ask the anglers to leave abnd decide to fish other stretches. This will not be the case next week when we will be fishing pegs A1 to 16 for a pairs match.

Sections in Pegs 26 to 40 and pegs 17 to 25 were selected to be fished with one section of 4 on the newly extended pegs 17 to 25.

Winner on the day from

peg 27 was Nick Bastock. Nick fished the pole across with a maggots or pellet and weighed a credible 26.30kg.

In second place was John Waples who was unusually silent at the draw after selecting the fantastic peg 26. John used similar tactics but just fell short of Nick with 17.90kg.

In third place from the other end of the section on peg 36 was Lenny Bolton. Lenny again fished the pole and feeder and weighed 14.96kg.

Pegs 17 to 25 did not fish particularly well but the boy, Neil Mcbernie won that section on the pole with maggots. From peg 21 he caught several carp for 8.48kg.

Rods N Reels

The following day we made

the short journey into Murcia to fish the Rio Segura in the town centre. This river can be very moody and this was in fact the case. Everyone caught but it was a struggle.

Winner on the day on the first peg past the first bridge was Bill Cannon. Bill fished the feeder and completed a runaway victory with 15.04kg ofInCarp.second place was Terry Stroud, who used similar tactics from peg 2 after the first set of reeds for 7.74kg.

In third place was Graham Patterson who also used the feeder on the far end peg and weighed 6.58kg. In the summer series thing are hotting up with John Waples leading the way.
