Orihuela Costa residents asks Valencian Community president for help
Residents in Orihuela Costa have written to Valencian Community
President Carlos Mazón with a clear message: “Orihuela Coast needs your help.” The Cabo Roig and Lomas Residents Association has sent a list of urgent shortcomings that are
impacting the daily lives of those living in Orihuela Costa.
The neighbourhood organisation, which represents 700 members and their families, all of them residents of Orihuela Costa, de nes itself as a non-pro t organisation that does
not charge membership fees and has no public or private funding: “We are altruistic, independent, without political a nity and we defend the interests of the residents with a positive and proactive attitude,” explains the association head Tomás Moreno in the letter.
“The situation is chaotic” in Orihuela Costa he says and stresses that the area has a unique case law, di erent from other municipalities such as Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja or Pilar de la Horadada. Because although the Vega Baja coastline is in continuous expansion, with accelerated urban development, which welcomes important migratory ows and a large contingent of residential and holiday tourism there is an inherent delay in infrastructures and services of all kinds. This is aggravated in the case of Orihuela, where “there is a gap between the dimensioning of public
services and the real capacity to be provided throughout the municipal area,” he points out.
According to the association, this leads to “huge shortcomings” in essential matters such as waste collection and treatment, street cleaning, maintenance of green areas, security, road maintenance or essential infrastructure, which are particularly acute on the coast, since “the bipolarity of the municipality produces a continuous imbalance: services are concentrated in the main municipality, as are votes,” highlight the letter.
In terms of population, there are around 30,000 registered residents and another 45,000 who are not included in the census, as well as 75,000 residents who are present for more than six months and 100,000 tourist rental places. “In a municipality sized for 40,000 inhabitants in the urban centre and outlying areas and
30,000 on the coast, it is a gap that is often insurmountable,” he stresses, adding that “no politician at the head of our autonomous community has ever taken this problem seriously, but we have never had a president so close to this reality.”
“What is essential is not provided, what is important is not planned - and therefore does not exist -, what is urgent is not resolved, the future is not studied and therefore we are condemned to disaster,” concludes the letter, which calls on the regional President not to leave them “unattended,” encouraging him to hold to a meeting to discuss solutions.

Los Montesinos backs out of recycling plant
The mayor of Los Montesinos, José Manuel Butrón, and his PSOE government team are back tracking on its promise to site a biowaste plant near the town due to public pressure. The City Council plans to call an extraordinary plenary session to revoke the agreement made in July when it gave 3,580 square meters of land free of charge to the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium for the purpose of building an organic waste composting plant.
An unprecedented and unexpected protest by residents organised in just a few weeks, which brought more than a thousand Montesineros out onto the streets against the planned installation in the Levante II industrial estate, has forced the municipal government to back down.
The alternative for the Consortium would be land in Rojales, but it is clear that the rejection of Los Montesinos will not encourage the neighbouring municipality to take on the project. The deadlines are running out and European funding of more than one million euros out of the four million total cost of the project is up in the air. The result is that the Vega Baja is still without permanent facilities to treat the almost 200,000 tons of waste it generates each year . And the worst thing is that nobody wants them.
Son injured during knife attack between his parents
It has been revealed that the ten-year-old son of the Norwegian woman accused of killing her husband in Orihuela Costa, was injured during the incident. The child made a formal statement to the judge presiding over the case vis video link from the care facility he and his sibling, aged 6 and 8, were taken.
The authorities are trying to determine how the injury occurred. Isolated, injured, with his father dead and not knowing where his mother is, the child was in a state of shock and was not willing to testify. His version was contradictory, saying at one point that he was injured in the middle of the struggle and at another moment saying that it was when he was trying to defend his father.
The defence lawyer, Juan Francisco Sánchez Otharán, from the Quiroga Sánchez law rm in Alicante, believes that “in that mental state, he was pressured like an adult to talk when, from the beginning, he said he did not want to talk.” The defence said: “He was led to a state of psychological exhaustion that ended with him narrating some things in an incoherent way until he ended up exhausted, lying on the ground.”
The defence claims there were “ numerous irregularities and violations of essential norms and fundamental rights”, including “ unwarranted pressure and insistence on him to make a statement “. For more than 15 minutes, “he
was pressured by the police o cer who conducted the interrogation to make a statement, even though he was not obliged to do so and despite having stated on multiple occasions and from the very beginning of the evidence that he did not want to say anything”.
Retract statement
The lawyer has requested to the court to annul the statement with the possibility of making it again, “this time with all the guarantees”. Sánchez Otharán stresses that the child must be clearly informed that he is not obliged to make a statement, although he can make any statements he wishes. The defence team say the child was pressed for at least 15 minutes. “After all the pressure , the boy nally spoke, not because he wanted to, but because of the insistence of the o cer who was questioning him and because he was unaware of the signi cance of his statement and that he had the option of not speaking,” argues the lawyer, who adds that he was asked “ biased questions , without giving the defence the opportunity to intervene or ask questions.”
He was also not given a report assessing his psychological condition and was given an English interpreter when his mother tongue is Norwegian, the language he understands best and which gives him the most security.
British Embassy offers newly published EU guidance on entry-exit system
The British Embassy in Spain is highlighting newly published guidance on the Entry-Exit System to British nationals in Spain: https:// travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en.
The guidance issued by the European Union sets out more detail on the scheme, it’s implementation and how Withdrawal Agreement Bene ciaries can avoid registration. There is also an online tool for travellers to check the number of days they can spend in the Schengen zone, which will become available once the EES goes live later this year.
The EES will require all non-EU short stay travellers to register via an automated system at the border. They will need to provide their name, passport details, biometric data ( ngerprints and captured facial images) and the date and place of entry and exit upon entering Spain. This will replace the current passport stamping at the border. These details will be held on le for three years, meaning Britons making repeat visits to Spain within a three-year period will not have to go through the same registration process each time.
To be exempt from registering with the EES, British residents in the
EU will need to show a valid uniform-format biometric card, which in Spain is the TIE. The non-biometric Green Certi cate, though a valid residency document in Spain, was issued prior to EU Exit and therefore, does not feature in the Withdrawal Agreement or in Annex 22 of the Schengen Border Guard Handbook document. It is expected that Green Certi cate holders may lose out on the chance to be exempt from registering. As a result, they may encounter di culties and delays at the border, especially when entering other EU countries where the Green Certi cate may not be recognised.
The British Embassy is therefore asking those still using a Green Certi cate to get a TIE as soon as possible, ahead of the introduction of the EU’s new Entry Exit System (EES), expected in Autumn this year.
The process for securing a TIE appointment the card itself is run by the Spanish Government. More information on how to apply, including links to Spanish Government websites where the applications are made, can be found on the ‘Living in Spain’ guide on gov.uk.
Puigdemont announces ‘return journey from exile’
Former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont announced that he is taking his ‘return journey from exile’ in order to attend the investiture debate in the Catalan Parliament, despite facing likely arrest upon his return to Spain.
The Catalan Socialist (PSC) candidate Salvador Illa is expected to become the new president of Catalonia, which will mark a significant shift in the tide of Catalan politics – the first time a president in favour of Spanish unity will lead the regional government since 2010.
In a video posted on social media with English subtitles, Puigdemont explained that ‘in normal democratic conditions, for an MP like me to announce his intention to attend that session would be unnecessary’.
Puigdemont is the figurehead of the hardline pro-independence Junts per Catalunya (JxCat) party, and led Catalonia between 2016
and 2017 before fleeing Spain following a referendum on independence deemed illegal by the judiciary.
The Spanish parliament passed an amnesty law in May pardoning those involved in the failed 2017 secession bid, but the Supreme Court has upheld arrest warrants for Puigdemont and two others, who were also charged with embezzlement, ruling that the amnesty law does not apply to them.
It remains unclear how Puigdemont plans to return to the country and enter the regional parliament while evading police.
The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, are putting together an increased security plan around and inside Barcelona’s Ciutadella Park, where the Catalan Parliament is located.
In an open letter posted on his X/Twitter account, Puigdemont described Spain’s efforts to detain him as a ‘hybrid coup’, adding ‘if they succeed, I imagine what
awaits me and know what I must do’.
ERC spokesperson Raquel Sans acknowledged that Puigdemont’s arrest could delay the vote for a new Catalan leader.
Police will try to arrest Puigdemont before he reaches the heavily guarded parliament building in Barcelona, but are also authorised to enter if needed, El Periodico newspaper reported, said police sources.
Puigdemont’s party, JxCat, has announced on social media a ‘welcoming’ gathering for him at 9am on in the Passeig Lluís Companys in Barcelona, just a short walk away from the Catalan Parliament.
In 2011, then-leader Artur Mas was forced to access the building’s rooftop by helicopter after it was surrounded by nearly 1,000 anti-austerity activists protesting against budget cuts.
Is one glass of red wine per day really good for you?
You’ve probably heard it at a party when people talk about whether drinking wine is really healthy for you.
And if that is the case, which wine is the healthiest for you according to the experts?
According to the experts, the healthiest wine you can take as a wine drinker is a Pinot noir.
The Pinot Noir as it is called in France, and in German “Spatburgunder”, is a blue grape with a compact bunch and the grapes have a thin skin. The grape is difficult to grow because it is very sensitive to rot and fungal diseases.
The wine of the Pinot noir is not very dark in color and is soft and smooth.
When the Pinot Noir undergoes a long “bottle aging”, it is even more tasty. It is also often used to make a champagne and Rosé.
A Pinot noir goes well with turkey, veal or pork.
If you cool the wine a
bit, it can also go well with a tuna steak, salmon steak or swordfish.
And what is good for your heart and blood vessels?
The experts say that 1 glass of beautiful Rioja is good for you.
The Rioja is good for the circulatory system, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Stanford’s university white indicates that wine activates an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase. This prevents damage to heart cells.
Of course, the wine we
indicate here must be of good quality, otherwise everything we indicate will not work.
And if you want to be assured of good and beautiful quality wines, visit us in our shop in Albir, Av. the Albir 80, local two. We have beautiful Pinot noir and Spatburgunder, from Slovenia and Germany.
But of course also beautiful Riojas, both white and red.
We stand for quality !, So come and taste it

Two arrested and one investigated for defrauding an elderly woman
The Civil Guard, as part of the “Emisaria” operation, has arrested a man and a woman and is investigating another individual for allegedly defrauding over 80,000 euros from an 87-year-old woman in Torrevieja. The victim discovered the fraud when she noticed her bank account had only 63 cents and sought help from her residence due to her limited mobility.
At the end of April, through the collaboration between the Civil Guard and nursing homes under the Major Security Plan, one of the senior centers in Torrevieja requested investigators to assist a resident suspected of being scammed and having her bank account emptied. With this information, the Torrevieja Investigation Area launched the “Emisaria” operation to investigate the case.
In the initial phase, investigators gathered information from the victim for further analysis. They discovered that since December 2022, various bank cards had been used for payments and withdrawals exceeding 80,000 euros.
Based on the
collected information, investigators identified multiple suspects. Among them was a worker at the senior center who made cash payments and withdrawals totaling approximately 40,000 euros. Additionally, the victim’s niece and her partner conducted transactions worth 42,000 euros, including ATM withdrawals, transfers to other bank accounts, and payments at gambling establishments. During the investigation, agents learned that one of the suspects was planning to leave the country. This prompted the expedited arrest of the center’s worker, a 42-year-old woman, and a 52-year-old man,
the partner of the victim’s 78-year-old niece, who is also under investigation. It was also revealed that the victim’s niece and her partner had rented out the victim’s home without her consent. Moreover, the niece discovered that her partner had stolen 28,000 euros from her bank account. The arrested individuals and the suspect, charged with theft and fraud, were brought before the Torrevieja Court of Instruction. The court ordered their release with precautionary measures and temporarily froze all their financial assets pending judicial resolution
Alicante bomb hoax
There was a major scare for TRAM d’Alacant users recently as more than 200 passengers were evacuated from the train on which they were traveling on Line 3, due to a false bomb threat. It appears that the person responsible for causing panic was one of the passengers themselves, who loudly threatened to detonate a bomb.
The incident occurred at the Sangueta tunnel while the Tram was traveling between El Campello and Luceros. In response to the situation, the vehicle’s driver opened the doors so that the over 200 passengers could exit on their own, utilising the evacuation passages available in the tunnel.
After activating the security protocol by service operators, a large police contingent was dispatched to the scene, whose o cers detained the individual. Police o cers checked the man’s backpack and mobile phone and found no explosive device. Sources close to the case suggest that the person responsible for this false threat, a 26-year-old man of Spanish nationality, might su er from some sort of mental disorder. The Policia Nacional said he had been charged with a public order o ence.
Following police intervention, Line 3 and all other lines a ected by the incident were restored within around 30 minutes.
Continued disruption at Alicante-Elche Airport
Since July of this year, Alicante Airport security personnel have been engaged in strike action, which has now extended into August. This industrial action was initiated in response to the failure to reach agreements with Sureste Seguridad, the company awarded the contract for private security at Alicante Airport, regarding working conditions for the employees.
The strike consists of partial work stoppages scheduled for speci c times and dates. These stoppages occur for one hour in the morning from 8:30am to 9:30am and one hour in the early evening from 6pm to 7pm. The designated on-going strike dates are 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 30th and 31st of August, as well as the 1st of September 2024.
Under Spanish law, essential services, including airport operations, must maintain minimum service levels during strikes. This legal requirement is in place to prevent a total shutdown and ensure that the public’s needs are met. The speci c percentage of workers required to remain on duty during a strike is determined through negotiations and can vary based on the circumstances. Due to the mandatory minimum service levels, the impact of the strike was somewhat limited on 1st August
One of Spain’s most wanted arrested in Alicante
The National Police have arrested one of Spain’s most wanted fraudsters in a hotel in Alicante. The 36-year-old Spanish man had accumulated up to 54 arrests and 18 judicial warrants from various courts, including those in Barcelona, Manresa, Valladolid, and several from the Comunitat.
The criminal was caught in the act while allegedly trying to defraud a citizen who was selling a high-end watch. They had arranged to meet at a hotel in Alicante, where he was apprehended by the National Police.
According to a statement from the security body, the investigation began following a complaint from a citizen who had been defrauded while selling a high-end watch online. The case was taken up by agents from the Economic Crime Group of the National Police in Alicante.
The victim stated that he had listed the watch for sale at 13,500 euros and was contacted by a man over the phone, arranging a meeting at a hotel in Alicante. During the meeting, he sold the watch and was shown an immediate bank transfer con rmation. However, the money never arrived, and when he contacted his bank, he was informed that no transaction had been made.
Upon contacting the agents, he
was informed that he had fallen victim to one of Spain’s most wanted fraudsters. This criminal had the same modus operandi: making non-immediate transfers that were later retracted or using pre-falsi ed bank con rmations. By chance, an acquaintance of the victim, upon learning about the incident, reported that he had been contacted to sell a watch in the same manner and informed the National Police.
They arranged to meet at the same location where the initial victim had been defrauded.
Agents arrived at the scene, located the fraudster, intercepted him, and arrested him on the spot. The surprise arrest allowed o cers to gather relevant data for their investigation, successfully recovering the defrauded watch which had been sold at an establishment in Madrid.
2024. With the minimum service level being set at 86 percent, only two security sta members were able to participate in the strike. This high percentage ensures that a signi cant portion of the security workforce remains on duty.
Despite the constraints imposed by minimum service levels, the strike is anticipated to have a more pronounced e ect on weekends. The number of passengers at Alicante Airport
typically increases over the weekend, which may amplify the impact of the strike during these periods.
Passengers planning to travel by air during the strike period are advised to arrive at the airport well in advance. Allowing extra time to pass through security checkpoints is crucial in order to accommodate potential delays caused by the reduced number of security sta during the strike hours.
Guardamar launches awareness and information campaigns to keep the municipality clean
Mari Carmen Aguilera, the Councillor for the Environment at Guardamar del Segura Town Hall, has recently highlighted several initiatives aimed at maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the municipality. These campaigns are designed to encourage responsible behavior among residents, particularly pet owners.
One of the key campaigns targets pet owners, advising them to ensure their animals relieve themselves on the asphalt rather than on street furniture, which can lead to deterioration. Additionally, pet owners are being reminded of the importance of picking up their pets’ droppings and pouring a mixture of water and vinegar on their pets’ urine to help prevent unpleasant
odors.
Furthermore, to keep the streets clean and odor-free, Aguilera has emphasized that depositing waste outside of designated containers and beyond the established disposal hours is strictly prohibited. This rule also applies to the disposal of household goods, underscoring the need for proper waste management practices in the community.
In a related development, the Councillor for Animal Protection has announced e orts to align the town’s practices with the new Animal Welfare Law. This includes ongoing collaboration with veterinarians, animal groups, and volunteers, ensuring that the community is well-prepared to meet the new legal requirements.

Is the Fed risking a recession?
GBP
Sterling weakened at the tail end of last week following the Bank of England’s decision to cut rates 25 basis points to 5.00%.
The Monetary Policy Committee voted 5-4 in favour of a cut, with Governor Andrew Bailey leading the decision.
However, BoE Chief economist Huw Pill voted against a cut and has warned against cutting rates aggressively soon, as there’s evidence prices may continue to be sticky, with the job of taming inflation potentially still having some way to go.
The Monetary Policy Committee will receive two more releases of inflation data before its next policy meeting. Although cuts are being priced in, the BoE expects inflation to rise back to around 2.75% towards the end of the year before falling again after that.
There’s currently a 40% probability of a rate cut at the next meeting on Thursday 19th September, down from 62.5% at the beginning of the week, with two cuts priced in before the end of the year.
This week was a quiet one regarding data, the only notable release was the UK’s latest Construction PMI, which came out on Tuesday. The reading came in above expectation, posting 55.3 ahead of the 52.5 forecast. Construction activity is increasing at its fastest rate in 26-months and has now been above the key 50 threshold for five consecutive months, indicating growth in the industry.
GBP / EUR UPDATE
Flash CPI inflation data for the Eurozone was released last week. The data came in marginally above forecasts at 2.6%, against markets’ expectations of 2.5%.
Although inflation came out slightly higher than predicted, markets are still pricing in a cut at the European Central Bank’s next meeting on Tuesday 17th September. Markets have now fully priced in a 25-basis point cut at the following three ECB meetings, with some analysts reporting we could see as many as five cuts in a row from EU policymakers.
The euro has benefited from increased probability of rate cuts in the UK and US. Since last week, the single currency is up 1.8% against GBP and 1.2% against USD.
The primary data from the Eurozone this week comes from Germany; the latest month-on-month Factory Orders data was released on Tuesday, followed by Industrial Production figures on Wednesday and July’s CPI inflation data on Thursday. Factory Orders and Industrial Production both came in above expectations, with Factory Orders significantly higher than market forecasts of 0.4% at 3.9% and Industrial Production at 1.4% (ahead of the expected 1%).
Germany’s CPI Inflation data was slightly higher than June’s reading, coming in at 2.3% for July, up from 2.2% in the previous month.

Sanchez criticised for not taking measures to combat drought
The spokesperson for Water of the GPP in Les Corts and mayor of Almoradí, María Gómez, has criticized the Sánchez Government for neglecting the Valencian Community amidst the ongoing drought due to insufficient rainfall. She emphasized that “Carlos Mazón’s Council has implemented measures to support our livestock and agriculture.”
Gómez highlighted the urgency of establishing a Drought Roundtable by the Sánchez Government to devise specific measures and a schedule of actions to mitigate the impact on the population, agriculture, and livestock of the region.
She pointed out that “the Valencian Community has long been proactive, with 50% of treated water being reused, making it the leading region in
Europe for water reuse.”
“We understand the crucial role of water for our land, which is why water management is a key policy in defending our interests against a government like Sánchez’s that has reduced our water transfer 26 times and refuses to make necessary investments,” Gómez stressed.
The Popular Party leader
noted, “For Sánchez, the drought is not a priority. He is more focused on accommodating Catalan separatism to stay in power at La Moncloa rather than addressing the pressing issues of Valencians. We demand that the government immediately start working on concrete measures to address the current drought situation.”
The turtle “Pura Vida” returns to lay eggs on the beaches of Torrevieja
The loggerhead turtle named “Pura Vida,” which first laid eggs on La Mata beach on July 22, has returned to lay another nest of eggs, this time on Los Locos beach. Upon activation of the regional protocol, municipal biologist Juan Antonio Pujol was the first to
arrive at the scene.
Pura Vida has laid a total of 64 eggs in this latest nest. Six of these eggs were transferred to the Oceanogràfic in Valencia, while the remaining 58 were moved to the turtle nesting base in the dunes of the Molino del Agua Municipal
Natural Park in La Mata.
This nesting area in the Molino del Agua Park also houses the 63 eggs that Pura Vida laid on La Mata beach on July 22. The turtle is named after a beach bar in La Mata, whose staff alerted authorities by calling 112 upon sighting the turtle.
Guardamar man to do bungee jump in aid of diabetes cure
Michael Olsson, a resident of Guardamar del Segura, is set to take on the thrilling challenge of bungee jumping between two bridges in Mascarat to raise funds for the DiabetesCERO Foundation. This endeavor is part of the Specsavers Ópticas campaign, which aims to raise 5,000 euros in 2024 to support the search for a cure for type 1 diabetes.
“I’ve been preparing for this challenge by hiking, via ferrata, and climbing, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what it would feel like to fall. Instead of letting that stop me, I’ve decided to face my fears and take this leap for a wonderful cause that’s close to home. I’ll be bungee jumping from 60 meters with Alicante Aventura and experiencing a 40-meter free fall before swinging between the two bridges. By doing this, I want to raise €1,000 of that total on behalf of Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar, Torrevieja, and La Zenia. Being able to raise money for an amazing cause with this action is a
real motivation to face my fear and take that leap of faith,” Michael explained.
Michael is deeply committed to raising funds for diabetes research and increasing awareness of the disease’s impact on health. Having seen the effects of diabetes first-hand within his family, he is passionate
about supporting the DiabetesCERO Foundation.
“The great work that this Foundation does deserves to be better known, and I want to raise awareness not only about diabetes but also about the damage it can cause if not properly managed. The more funds allocated to research for a cure and improved
treatment, the better. Spreading the word about the impact of diabetes on health and vision is also very important. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial to mitigating the long-term effects of the disease. Please support this fantastic cause and help me reach my goal with a donation before I face this challenge at the end of September. Every donation made will help DiabetesCERO in their research to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes,” said Michael.
Eye tests are an effective way to detect signs of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy. You can help Michael reach his goal by visiting Specsavers Opticians in Guardamar, Torrevieja, and La Zenia for an eye test and to make a donation. Donations can also be made via the GoFundMe page “Bungee Jumping to raise funds for DiabetesCERO”. Every contribution aids research into type 1 diabetes.
There will be more challenges, activities, and
events throughout 2024 that you can sponsor and support. For more information, follow Facebook @SpecsaversOpticas and Instagram @specsaversspain. To find your nearest optician for donations or a comprehensive eye exam, visit www.specsavers.es.
Specsavers Ópticas, with locations on the Costa Blanca (Calpe, Jávea, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura, and La Zenia), the Costa del Sol (Fuengirola and Marbella), and in Mallorca (Santa Ponça), aims to improve quality of life for those with eye health issues. Exploring The Link Between Hearing Loss and Dementia
Hearing loss is a common issue, especially among older adults, but it often goes untreated or isn’t managed well. This neglect can have serious consequences beyond just di culty in hearing; it can signi cantly increase the risk of developing dementia.
Hearing Loss and Dementia: What’s the Connection?
Research has shown a strong link between hearing loss and dementia. Dr. Frank Lin from Johns Hopkins University found that people with mild hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those with normal hearing. The risk increases with the severity of hearing loss: three times higher for those with moderate loss and ve times higher for severe loss.
Why Does Hearing Loss
A ect the Brain?
There are several reasons why hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline. One idea is that struggling to hear puts extra strain on the brain. When the brain is busy trying to make sense of sounds, it has fewer resources
for other tasks like memory and thinking, which can lead to cognitive decline over time. Another reason is that hearing loss often leads to social isolation. When people can’t hear well, they might avoid social situations, leading to loneliness and depression. Additionally, hearing loss might actually change the brain’s structure. Studies have
shown that people with hearing loss experience faster brain shrinkage, especially in areas related to memory and cognition.
The
Bene ts of Early Treatment
Despite the clear connection between hearing loss and dementia, many people delay
getting treatment. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other devices can greatly improve hearing and overall quality of life. They can also reduce the cognitive burden caused by untreated hearing loss.
Research suggests that using hearing aids early can slow down or even prevent cognitive
decline. A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that hearing aid users had a slower rate of memory decline compared to those who didn’t use them. This shows how important early detection and treatment are.
Conclusion
The link between hearing loss and dementia highlights the need for proactive hearing care. Addressing hearing loss early can reduce its impact on cognitive functions. As our population ages, focusing on hearing health could help lower the rates of dementia and improve life quality for many people. Public health strategies should promote regular hearing checks and timely use of hearing aids or other devices to protect brain health.

Full speed ahead for cruise industry changes
Five times larger than the Titanic, the Icon of the Seas was unveiled at the start of 2024 as the world’s biggest cruise ship. It highlights a spiralling trend in the industry: the largest cruises have more than doubled in size since the year 2000. If this trajectory continues, ships could grow to a whopping eight times the size of the Titanic by 2050.
In fact, they’d make the 10deck, 269-metre-long ship from 1912 “look like a fishing boat”, according to a new report titled ‘Cruisezillas: How much bigger can cruise ships get?’ released by Transport & Environment (T&E). In the report, T&E calls for faster and more stringent climate requirements to be placed on cruise ships, as well as full and transparent disclosure of their emissions.
The Titanic had capacity for 2,500 passengers and had a gross tonnage (GT) - or volume - of 46,300. Icon of the Seas blows this out the water with a 7,600 capacity
and 248,700 GT. Across 20 decks, it features seven pools, a waterpark and more than 40 bars and restaurants spread across eight ‘neighbourhoods’.
By 2050, if cruises keep growing at the rate of the past 20 years, T&E predicts that the largest ships could carry 10,500 passengers with a GT of 345,000. The number of ships at sea has also increased
exponentially in recent decades, growing by 20 times from 22 ships in 1970 to 521 today.
Bigger ships, and more of them, mean higher emissions: despite the pandemic, the CO2 output from cruises in Europe grew by 17 per cent between 2019 and 2022, while methane emissions rocketed by 500 per cent.
Grassroots campaigns
have sprouted in Europe and beyond to stem the tide of cruising, and some port cities have introduced their own restrictions. In 2021, Venice, Italy, barred large cruise ships from anchoring in its historic centre, while Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain have capped the number of cruise ships allowed in daily. Amsterdam, too, recently announced
plans to ban cruise ships from its city centre by 2035. The cruise business is the fastest growing tourism sector and its emissions are quickly getting out of control, say experts.
Cruise ships are currently exempt from fuel duties as well as most corporate and consumer taxes. “Cruising is a luxury business, and operators must take responsibility for their climate impact. If they want to avoid becoming increasingly unwanted visitors, they must clean up their act.”
With nearly 36 million holidaymakers projected to take a cruise voyage in 2024, adding a €50 tax on cruise tickets would bring in €1.6 billion globally - and €410 million in Europe alone. These funds could be used to decarbonise the industry, for example by investing in hydrogen-based e-fuels. E-fuels have the potential to power 4 per cent of EU shipping by 2030, according to T&E’s report.

Worker dies after inhaling wine fermentation gases in winery
A tragic incident has occurred in a winery in Valdepeñas, Ciudad Real, where a 27-year-old worker lost his life due to the inhalation of carbon dioxide (CO2) fumes, commonly known as “tufo.” This accident highlights the dangers associated with CO2 exposure during the winemaking process, particularly during the alcoholic fermentation of must.
What Happened?
The young worker was found unconscious inside the winery on Tuesday night. Despite the rapid response of medical personnel, they
could only confirm his death upon arrival. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to the inhalation of carbon dioxide, which is produced in large quantities during the fermentation process.
Understanding the Danger:
The ‘Tufo’
The term “tufo” refers to the potentially lethal fumes generated by CO2 during fermentation. Yeasts involved in fermentation convert the natural sugars in grapes into alcohol, releasing CO2 as a byproduct. While CO2 is odorless and colorless, it is highly dangerous in high
concentrations. Being heavier than oxygen, CO2 tends to accumulate at ground level, displacing oxygen and creating a suffocating environment that can quickly render a person unconscious and lead to death by asphyxiation.
Historical and Modern Safety Measures
Historically, winemakers used simple methods to detect the presence of CO2, such as lighting a candle. If the candle extinguished, it indicated low oxygen levels, signaling the need to evacuate the area. Nowadays, modern wineries are equipped with sensors designed to monitor and detect
CO2 levels, providing a higher level of safety. Despite these advancements, accidents still occur, particularly at the start of the grape harvest when fermentation is at its peak.
The Role of Carbon Dioxide in Winemaking
Despite its dangers, CO2 plays a crucial role in the winemaking process. It helps control oxygen levels, which is essential for protecting the wine, enhancing its freshness, reducing sweetness, and promoting proper fermentation. CO2 also contributes to the aromatic profile and freshness of white and rosé wines, where its
content is typically higher compared to red wines.
Conclusion
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in wineries, especially during the high-risk period of fermentation. While CO2 is a necessary component in winemaking, it also poses significant risks that must be carefully managed to prevent such devastating accidents. It underscores the ongoing need for vigilance, proper ventilation, and the use of modern detection technologies to protect

“What are my options to watch UK TV in Spain”?
If you connect your phone to For mThere are several ways to watch UK TV when in Spain. The options are:
1. Satellite Dish –dependent on your location in Spain you will need a dish of 1.2 to 2.4 Metre diameter and an HD satellite receiver. Remember that all BBC channels are now HD. Seek professional advice to determine what you need or ask a neighbor with a satellite dish.
Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 400 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.
2. TV from your Internet provider – many Internet providers provide a limited number of UK channels.
3. Smart TV – Use a VPN to open BBC iPlayer, ITV X, All4 or My5. For each UK iPlayer you will need to set up an account using an email address and password. Some TVs have an input named “Screen Mirroring”. If you install a ‘Screen Mirroring” App on your mobile device you can play content from your mobile device on the TV.
4. Non-Smart TV- provided you have spare HDMI connections you can use Chromecast, Android TV Box or Fire Stick
5. Smartphone or Tablet –Use Chromecast or Screen Mirroring to “caste” TV from your mobile device. To use Chromecast you need Google Home App on your mobile device. You can then play content on your phone to the TV. This is better than Screen Mirroring as you can still use your phone for other things.
6. IPTV – Use an Android Box, Fire Stick or Mag Box connected to an HDMI socket using a suitable IPTV application. If you have a specific question about your particle situation, send an email to cbtechnology.help@gmail.com

Expansion plans in progress at Hotel Algorfa
The hotel has been very busy the last week making way for holiday makers and travellers passing by. It has truly been amazing watching a range of nationalities and cultures join together in the pool and restaurant enjoying themselves, playing water games and joining together for nightly entertainment. It is now that the hotel seems to have found its feet in hosting and the atmosphere is truly amazing. We bought a hotel’ will now be airing on main tv stream Channel 4 later on in the year so keep an eye out for that too! For more information on upcoming events, please see page 2.
Health & Beauty
My marriage is on the rocks. My wife and I have slept in separate rooms since our son was 4. He’s now 10, and I don’t think I can live life this way any longer. We both put on a front of being reasonably happy, to our son. The only light in my life IS my son, (and our dog). My parents know how miserable I am, as I confided in them recently. They said I should leave if I am that unhappy. They said I could go there, and bring the dog. My son asked me the other day, why I am always sad. It broke my heart. The thing is, I don’t think I could bring myself to leave him; he is also very fond of our dog and taking her away from my boy would be doubly devastating to him; my wife also loves our dog.
This is a very difficult situation for you, but you owe it to your son to be the best Dad you can be; in fact, the two of you owe it to your son to be the best parents
you can be. It is possible to be a good parent, and separate from your partner. Marriages break down all the time. This is not a happy marriage, it’s just a living arrangement. Have a good talk to your wife; it may not come as such a surprise to you that she maybe isn’t entirely happy either. It would be better to separate amicably for everyone’s sake, and you can share access to your dog.

What Are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are small, benign growths that commonly appear in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, neck, and eyelids. These growths, also known as acrochordons, are thought to develop due to friction from skin-to-skin contact.
It’s estimated that over half of all adults will develop a skin tag at some point, with a higher likelihood among those with certain health conditions or a family history of these growths. While there’s no speci c treatment required for skin tags, they can be removed if they become bothersome or irritating.
Skin Tag Symptoms
Skin tags typically resemble small, soft moles hanging o the skin, often attached by a thin stalk. They are usually round and soft, ranging in size from a few
millimeters to about a centimeter. The color of skin tags can vary depending on skin tone, from light tan to darker brown. You may have just one skin tag or several, and they can increase in number and size with age.
These growths most commonly appear in areas where the skin folds or frequently touches, such as:
Neck
Armpits
Eyelids
Groin or inner thighs
Under the breasts
Skin tags can sometimes cause irritation due to friction, especially when they are rubbed by clothing, seatbelts, jewelry, or other objects. Larger skin tags in areas like the armpits or groin can cause signi cant discomfort.

Both Benejuzar and Granja de Rocamora to improve medical centres
Benejúzar and Granja de Rocamora, two municipalities in the Vega Baja region, have recently been awarded nancial aid by the Ministry of Health as part of the Architectural Intervention Plan for Medical O ces (PIAC). This initiative is designed to renovate and improve health centers and medical o ces across the Valencian Community.
In total, 19 municipalities within the region have received these grants, which collectively amount to over 1.5 million euros. Speci cally, Benejúzar has been allocated 400,000 euros, while Granja de Rocamora will receive 106,197 euros. The funding is intended to facilitate architectural reforms that enhance the conditions of municipal care centers.
According to Pedro López, the General Director of Economic Management, Contracting, and Infrastructure, these funds can be used for various purposes, including repairs, restorations, and rehabilitations of healthcare facilities.
The funding will be distributed over two years, with 650,000 euros set aside for 2024 and 900,000 euros for 2025. This support is particularly signi cant for smaller municipalities like Benejúzar and Granja de
Rocamora, with populations of fewer than 6,000 and 3,000 inhabitants, respectively. The mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases, has already announced plans to expand the local medical clinic, emphasizing the importance of this external support for addressing the needs of the community.
Similarly, José Manuel Nadal, the mayor of Granja de Rocamora, highlighted the critical role of inter-administrative collaboration in achieving these improvements.
The call for applications for the 2024-2025 period was issued on February 27, detailing the requirements for municipalities to qualify for the aid. These requirements include proving ownership of the property in question and presenting a technical project for the proposed reforms, which must receive approval from the Ministry of Health. This process ensures that the allocated funds will be used e ectively to enhance healthcare infrastructure in these communities.
Ham
flavoured crisps to disapear?
The European Union’s recent decision not to renew the authorization of eight speci c smoke avoring additives has sparked concerns and rumors, particularly about the future of products like ham- avored crisps. However, despite the initial panic, the reality is that these snacks are not disappearing from shelves.
What’s Actually Happening?
The European Commission clari ed that while certain smoke avoring additives used in the production of foods, including ham- avored crisps, have been banned, this does not mean the end of these products. Instead, manufacturers will need to modify their recipes to exclude these speci c additives. Essentially, the ham- avored crisps can continue to be produced as long as alternative methods or ingredients are used that comply with the new regulations.
Transition Period
Producers have been granted a transition period to adapt to the new rules. For products where smoke avorings replace a traditional smoking process, there is a ve-year adaptation period. For products where these avorings are used simply to add avor—like ham- avored crisps— there is a two-year window to make the necessary changes.
Why Were the Additives Banned?
The decision stems from a re-evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) of the safety of these
smoke avorings. The re-evaluation used updated methodologies that recommended considering the entire mixture as genotoxic if any component was found to be genotoxic. Genotoxicity refers to the potential of a substance to damage the genetic material in cells, which can increase the risk of diseases such as cancer.
Of the eight additives reviewed, six were found to contain genotoxic substances, and for the remaining two, there was insu cient data to rule out safety concerns. Therefore, the EU decided not to renew the authorization for these additives as a precautionary measure.
Health Risks and EFSA’s Approach
While EFSA did not speci cally assess the likelihood of harmful e ects from consuming foods avored with these additives, the potential genotoxicity posed a signi cant enough risk to recommend the ban. This conservative approach is meant to protect public health, even if the actual risk from current consumption levels is uncertain.
Conclusion
In summary, ham- avored crisps and other similar products are not being banned outright. However, manufacturers must reformulate their products to exclude the now-banned smoke avoring additives. This decision re ects the EU’s commitment to food safety, ensuring that any potential health risks are minimized for consumers across the European Union.

Breathalyser refusal fine: Up to 600 euros for non-compliance in alcohol-free zones
Adolescents (under-18s) and adults who refuse to take a breathalyser test when requested by any policing authority in areas where alcohol consumption is prohibited may face nes ranging from 60 to 600 euros. This is one of the penalties outlined in a draft bill aimed at preventing alcohol consumption and its e ects on minors, which the Spanish government plans to present to Parliament for approval before the end of the year.
The draft bill includes several measures:
Prohibiting alcohol consumption by minors or adults in schools, institutes, centers for minors, student residences with teenagers, and at sporting, leisure, or public entertainment events designed for minors, such as children’s sports matches. The only exception is consecrated wine used in religious ceremonies. Imposing nes of 60 to 600 euros for the consumption of alcohol in prohibited places. If minors are unable to pay the nes, their parents or guardians will be responsible, but participation in approved awareness, treatment, or rehabilitation programs can substitute for payment.
More severe penalties are proposed for businesses:
Fines of 601 to 30,000 euros and potential suspension or closure for up to three years for adults who buy alcohol for underage drinkers, those
who violate advertising restrictions, and those who sell alcohol in prohibited areas.
Shops selling primarily children’s products but o ering alcohol, and unlicensed street vendors of alcoholic beverages, are included in this category.
Businesses must verify that customers purchasing alcohol from vending machines or selfservice shops are over 18, and must secure alcoholic drinks to prevent access by minors. Speci c training for convenience stores and retailers will be provided.
Severe penalties are outlined for actions that endanger public health, particularly children’s health:
Fines up to 600,000 euros, closure of businesses or centers for up to ve years, and loss of o cial aid for intentional or repeated o enses, or those resulting in signi cant pro ts.
Con scation of drinks and pro ts, and bans on
contracting with public authorities for two to six years.
The bill also addresses advertising:
A total ban on alcohol advertising within 200 meters of schools, health or social centers, parks, or children’s leisure areas, even for zero alcohol (0.0%) products.
The famous ‘Tío Pepe’ sign in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square may be exempt, as there are no schools or parks within 200 meters.
The ban extends to all public roads, bus shelters, public transport, and public body headquarters.
Advertising promoting “moderate” or “responsible” consumption of alcohol will be prohibited, as scienti c studies indicate that only zero alcohol consumption is free of health risks. These measures re ect a comprehensive approach to reducing the harmful e ects of alcohol on minors and the broader community, emphasizing prevention, education, and strict regulation.
Number of speeding drivers on motorways and dual carriageways increases
Since the beginning of the year, the number of deaths while travelling on motorways and dual carriageways has increased by 21%.
During the seven days of the campaign, agents from the Traffic Division of the Civil Guard established 3,679 speed control points where a total of 955,804 vehicles were controlled.
Seven drivers were brought to court for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h, as provided for in Article 379.1 of the Criminal Code. This July, between the 15th and 21st, the General Directorate of Traffic carried out a new surveillance and control campaign focused on speed, during which agents from the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard established 3,679 speed control points at which a total of 955,804 vehicles were
controlled.
Of the total number of vehicles inspected, 52,888 drivers (5.5%) were reported for driving at a speed exceeding the permitted limit, a percentage that remains stable compared to the last campaigns carried out.
Considering the type of road, the percentage of drivers reported is similar on conventional roads and on motorways and dual carriageways; both represent 48.4% with 25,572 and 25,604 drivers reported, respectively, which represents an increase in the percentage of drivers reported on expressways. In addition, 1,712 drivers (3.2%) were reported on cross-country roads.
This increased noncompliance with speed limits on motorways and dual
carriageways may be related to the increase in fatal accidents on these types of roads. So far this year, the number of fatalities on dual carriageways and dual carriageways has increased by 21%.
In the criminal field, 7 of the drivers reported committed a crime against road safety and were brought to court for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h, as stated in article 379.1 of the Criminal Code.
These results must be added to the controls carried out by the various regional and local police forces within their areas of competence, a very important collaboration since, in this way, the message of respecting the established speed limits is unified, regardless of the road on which one travels.

Real Madrid and Barcelona eye up Alexander Arnold
Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly keeping a close eye on Trent Alexander-Arnold as they consider a potential move for the Liverpool defender next summer. The 25-year-old, who has become a star at Anfield since his debut in 2016, has made over 300 appearances for his boyhood club. However, with just one year remaining on his contract, both El Clasico rivals are monitoring his situation closely, according to reports from The Sun.
There is speculation that Alexander-Arnold could be open to a move, especially given the rise of fellow Liverpool academy right-back Conor Bradley over the past year. Liverpool are expected to offer Alexander-Arnold a new contract with a significant wage increase from his current £180,000-a-week salary, though the club is reportedly cautious about breaking the bank to retain him.
The rumors of a potential transfer to Real Madrid have been fueled by Alexander-Arnold’s close friendship with Jude Bellingham, with whom he recently spent time on holiday in Los Angeles. The report indicates that it is unlikely Liverpool would consider selling Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, given his deep emotional connection to the club where he has spent his entire career. However, his future at Anfield remains uncertain as he approaches the final 12 months of his contract, joining the ranks
of other key players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who are also nearing the end of their deals.
Alexander-Arnold has had a highly successful tenure with Liverpool, winning seven trophies over the past eight years. In 310 appearances, he has contributed 81 assists and scored 19 goals, earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished passers. Despite his contributions, there is speculation about how he will fit into the system of new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who reportedly favors a more traditional right-back style, similar to that of Conor Bradley.
Given these uncertainties, both Real Madrid and Barcelona, along with other major European clubs, are reportedly monitoring Alexander-Arnold’s situation closely. Michael Owen, another Liverpool academy graduate who made the move to Real Madrid in his mid-20s, has recently suggested that Alexander-Arnold might be tempted by a similar opportunity. Owen remarked that “Real Madrid at the moment are the best team in Europe,” and noted that the allure of playing for such an iconic club could be hard to resist.
While it remains to be seen what decision Alexander-Arnold will make, the possibility of a move to a European giant like Real Madrid or Barcelona is increasingly being discussed as his contract situation unfolds.

During August both Abbey anglers and Rods N Reels have a break from their o cial match calender due mainly to the heat.
Several of our members sh with other clubs and at other venues and on Monday the 5th of August we joined in a special match “FISH O MANIA” shed at what is a ectionately known as “The pond”. This is a irrigation reservoir situated on the N332 near to La Mata. This is the match report compiled by my good friend Jackie Breslin.
Yesterday at the 3rd attempt we managed to hold our big summer competition, although you couldn’t use the adjective big when talking about the weights recorded.
Over the last few months massive catches by both pleasure and match anglers have been achieved so it was a
surprise that on this particular day the carp decided to have a day of rest.
12 anglers competed for the various prizes with each one taking home at least a litre bottle of spirits, some a lot more. Not a lot to say about the shing so will go straight to the results.
The lucky pegs were won by Alan Priest and Richard Woods respectively. We also had prizes for nearest to 4kg which was won by Alan Priest and nearest to 10kg won by Willy Moons.
The Pairs competition was won by Willy Moons and Trevor Morray with a combined weight of 13.42kg. These were followed closely in 2nd place by Ian Brown and Nick Bastock with 13.28kg.
The match was shed in two sections of
six . Willy Moons was the overall winner with 11.22kg and 2nd in his section was Nick Bastock with 8.22kg and 3rd Alan Priest with 4.26kg.
The other section on the opposite bank was won by the jovial Richard Woods with 8.04kg , he was followed i n 2nd by Steve Wright with 7.04kgs and Terry Stroud with 5.74kg.
Most anglers shed the feeder with a variety of baits. The shing was a little below par but a great day was had by all.
Big thanks to all the sta in helping to make it a very good, despite the weights.
Jackie Breslin.
