Orihuela Costa Cannabis Club closed by Police

In a signi cant operation targeting illicit drug activity, the Orihuela Local Police have successfully con scated over 2 kilograms of marijuana, along

with more than 1,300 grams of hashish and 150 various cannabis-derived narcotics boasting high levels of THC. The operation unfolded following a

thorough search within a cannabis club located in Orihuela Costa.

During the meticulously executed operation, law enforcement o cials arrested the President of the association, a German national, under suspicion of committing a crime against Public Health. The venue in question lacked the legally required license, prompting the arrest.

The police operation, which

took place last week, was initiated in response to a barrage of noise complaints originating from an establishment in Lomas de Cabo Roig. Prompted by the grievances of local residents, o cers made their way to the `Maschi´ premises.

The surveillance bore fruit when they witnessed a trio of individuals entering the premises adjacent to “Maschi,” recognized as a Cannabis Smokers

Club called “The Green Brothers”. Prior attempts to verify the establishment’s legitimacy and check documentation had been thwarted by an elaborate security setup involving surveillance cameras, a video intercom system, and a double door con guration that could only be unlocked from within.

As the trio entered, the police acted swiftly, seizing the moment to enter. With entry successfully gained, the o cers proceeded to identify and process the individuals present. They also seized a substantial cache of narcotic substances.

After the operation the premises were sealed o , and the con scated contraband was transferred to the Civil Guard barracks in Torre de la Horadada in order to catalogue the evidence before presentation in the judicial proceedings that will follow.

The successful operation stands as a testament to the vigilance and dedication exhibited by the Orihuela Local Police in their ongoing e orts to combat illegal drug trade and uphold public health and safety. This is one of a growing number of Cannabis Club closures in Torrevieja and Orihuela, all of which posed as legally registered premises but none of which had the license and documentation required by the Valencian Community.

Tomato hurling returns to Buñol

One of the regions most odd and most famous estas will kick o in Buñol’s next week. The picturesque town is gearing up for a riot of red as the world-renowned La Tomatina festival makes its triumphant return tomorrow (Wednesday 30th August), promising a spectacle of tomato- inging madness.

A longstanding tradition that has captured the hearts of both local residents and global tourists alike, La Tomatina unfailingly unfolds on the nal Wednesday of August, commencing at noon. This year, the 77th edition of the event is set to attract a diverse crowd, including participants from around the world who ock to this Spanish town to partake in the revelry.

Originally born from an unexpected mishap in 1945, La Tomatina has since evolved into one of the planet’s most

vibrant and colourful gatherings. The festival’s origins trace back to a group of young enthusiasts who were striving to catch a better glimpse of Buñol’s lively parade. In their eagerness to navigate through the thronging bystanders, a chance incident ensued - one of the parade’s participants was accidentally toppled over, resulting in a are of anger. In response the spectators seized tomatoes from a nearby vendor and playfully hurled them at the irate individual, giving birth to the inaugural La Tomatina.

The star of the show, the pear tomatoes, are favoured due to their coste ectiveness and will be carefully loaded onto a eet of seven trucks, embarking on a 70-kilometer journey to Buñol.

While the La Tomatina festival once accommodated up to 50,000 participants,

safety concerns have compelled organisers to cap the attendance at a maximum of 20,000 individuals, each armed with o cial tickets. The tomato melee lasts for an hour, culminating in the arrival of re trucks that diligently cleanse the streets. Post-battle, attendees have the option to retreat to their lodgings for a well-deserved shower or take a refreshing dip in the nearby Buñol river. With only a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, La Tomatina’s exuberant legacy persists, marking it as an unparalleled celebration of spontaneity, joy, and camaraderie. As the clock ticks closer to the last Wednesday of August, Buñol braces itself for an outpouring of tomato- inging frenzy that promises to captivate both newcomers and seasoned revellers alike.

Historic rubbish dumps cleaned up on the coast

The Orihuela City Council has begun the removal of historic rubbish dumps that are found on roads in Orihuela Costa. The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Rocio Ortuño and the Councillor for the Environment, Noelia Grao, have explained that cleanups are being carried out across the coastal area. These areas where debris accumulates in the di erent urbanisations next to the “islands” of rubbish containers.

Both councillors consider that these dumps have a negative environmental and visual impact on public roads and perception of the area.

“The council removes solid urban waste and belongings, but it so

happens that, for a long time, in certain areas, all kinds of rubble from small works and renovations have been dumped in a totally irresponsible way next to the RSU containers.”

“So, despite not being one of our ordinary functions, we have proceeded

to contract the necessary support services for their removal and transfer to the treatment plant.”

This waste, which accumulates is mostly the remains of small constructions, is distributed throughout di erent areas of the coast, mainly in Calle Lapislázuli, Avenida de España, Calle Colón, Calle San Antonio, Calle Rubí, Gerardo Diego, Las Ramblas park, Antonio Tapies, Ursa Major, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Rainbow, Victoria, Horizon, Grapefruit Street, Otelo Street, De Palos Street, Almansa Street, Dominican Republic, Venezuela Street and Ramblas de Oleza.

The councillors, once again asked for people to collaborate “so that together

we can carry out better management at source, being aware that there is a lack of resources” and to report cases where rubbish has been dumped contrary to the local laws.

The Department of Citizen Security, directed by Mónica Pastor, will reinforce the control of compliance with the laws. The council already made reinforcements this summer in street cleaning, pruning collection and personnel for which the Orihuela City Council has allocated nearly half a million euros.

Arson suspected in enerife ildfires

School delays

The much-anticipated opening of the new Infant and Primary School in Dehesa de Campoamor has hit a series of setbacks, with the school’s opening now postponed until the start of 2024. Initially due to welcome students in prefabricated classrooms on 11th September for the new school year, the project has been marred by multiple changes in building location, leaving residents and parents frustrated.

to the academic year. This temporary arrangement was intended to ful l the educational needs of the region until a more permanent school could be constructed in the following three academic years.

Authorities on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife have said they suspected arson as the cause behind the relentless res that continue to engulf the northern region. Police o cials are currently pursuing three distinct lines of investigation into what they believe to be a deliberate act of arson.

Canary Islands President, Fernando Clavijo, addressed the media about the gravity of the situation, stating, “The potential perpetrator or perpetrators behind this heinous act have recklessly endangered the lives of thousands of residents and put valuable properties at great risk.”

Clavijo revealed that the wild re crisis had already led to the displacement of 12,279 individuals, according to data provided by the Guardia Civil. Emergency response teams reported that 11,600 hectares of land had fallen victim to the relentless blaze-equivalent

to approximately 16,000 football elds in size.

While Clavijo o ered a glimmer of hope by stating that the situation on the southern front of the re had become signi cantly more stable, he expressed continuing concerns about the northern area, which remained under threat from the unforgiving ames.

The initial spark of the wild re was reported, originating in a national park situated near the iconic Mount Teide volcano, Spain’s highest peak.

This devastating inferno follows closely after a scorching heatwave that left vast expanses of the archipelago in a dangerously dry state. Climate scientists have issued somber warnings, predicting that such extreme heatwaves will likely surge in frequency and intensity as global temperatures continue to soar due to the worsening e ects of climate change.

The decision to establish the new educational centre to meet the soaring demand for schooling in Orihuela Costa was con rmed on 14th December, 2022, by the Generalitat. However, the Orihuela City Council, under both the previous and current administrations, has struggled to secure an appropriate municipal plot for the construction. Over the past months, the proposed location has undergone four revisions, causing upheaval and uncertainty.

In April, the Ministry of Education awarded a contract worth 1.2 million euros to Alquileres Barceló Sáez SL for the assembly, rental, and disassembly of prefabricated classrooms. The planned facility was designed as a single-story structure, intended to accommodate up to 380 infant and junior students. The layout included classrooms, a dining area, a patio, and shared amenities, with a swift construction timeline of just two months.

Initial promises suggested that the new school would be ready well in advance of the 11th September deadline, ensuring a seamless start

However, the project’s timeline took a hit when the original plot on Calle Nispero, located within the Los Dolses urbanization, was deemed unsuitable due to its terrain, despite having previously housed the Colegio Playas de Orihuela for 16 years until 2018.

Following this rejection, the PSOE-Cs government proposed an alternative site in the parking lot of the La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre, which boasted convenient access to services and excellent connectivity. Regrettably, this option was discarded due to insu cient parking space, falling short of the minimum requirements stipulated by the General Plan.

Subsequently, a plot across the street on Calle Madreperla emerged as the next contender. With the only necessary preparation being an asphalting contract, this location seemed promising. However, the newly elected PP-Vox government shifted the narrative once again at the onset of their term. The Councillors for Education and Urban Planning, Vicente Pina and Matías Ruiz, respectively, advocated for reverting to the initially rejected site on Calle Níspero.

Unfortunately, this selected plot now presents numerous challenges. The surrounding fence is in a state

of disrepair, and considerable work is needed to level the sloped terrain. Additionally, the contract must encompass the removal of substantial debris, outdated equipment, and accumulated furnishings from the area, remnants of the dismantled Playas de Orihuela, which closed its doors ve years ago.

Lack of investment

Given the allocated budget of just 1.2 million euros for the construction contract and the dire condition of the newly chosen site, signi cant adjustments in funding seem inevitable if construction is to proceed in the foreseeable future.

Despite the urgent necessity to expand educational facilities to accommodate the in ux of junior and primary students along the coast, the Orihuela City Council has yet to nalize or approve the crucial project report. This document is essential for securing funding from the Generalitat to support the new school. Meanwhile, the municipality remains engaged in drafting the project and negotiating construction contracts, leaving concerned parents and residents awaiting tangible progress.

With the educational needs of the region in limbo and the opening of the new school postponed until 2024, local authorities face mounting pressure to resolve the ongoing challenges and pave the way for a brighter educational future.

Flood prevention campaign

The Emergency Coordination Centre of the Generalitat is launching its annual Flood Prevention Campaign, in coordination with the municipalities of the Valencian Community and integrated organisations. The essence of which is to reminded Town Halls that they must review their procedures and take action against the risk of ooding.

The documentation that forms part of the campaign is available for download on the

1·1·2 Comunitat Valenciana website. The updated version of the Special Flood Risk Plan can also be found on this page.

An important part of the ood prevention campaign is to remind local administrations that there must be action and response plans for oods that are managed by the local administration, the companies that operate and supply basic services and the public agencies and services of intervention and support.

All this either with its own

Municipal Action Plan against the risk of Floods or through the Municipal Emergency Plan. Of the 227 town halls with the obligation to draft the municipal action plan against oods (PAM IN), 110 have approved it, 53 are in the approval process and 40 are drafting it.

When the 2023-24 Campaign ends, it is expected that 89.4% of the municipalities with high or medium risk of ooding will already have drawn up their municipal action plan against the risk of ooding.

Spain prepares for rollout of new border system

Spain is gearing up for the installation and operation of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) at its external border checkpoints by the close of 2023 or the outset of 2024, according to an o cial statement from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.

The Ministry recently a rmed that Spain’s comprehensive plan is to have the EES fully functional and all necessary equipment in place within the speci ed timeframe. The ambitious undertaking involves the deployment of cuttingedge technology to enhance border control e ciency and security.

In a signi cant development announced on 16th June, 2022, the Spanish Ministry of Interior entered into a contract with Thales, a prominent French multinational corporation headquartered in Paris, specialised in defence, transportation, and security systems. The collaboration aimed to equip Spain’s border checks with state-of-theart technology, including 1,500 Manual Border Control Inspection units across various border crossing locations.

Although Thales initially projected that the modern systems would be operational before May 2023, coinciding

with the anticipated EU-wide implementation of the EES, this timeline has encountered setbacks.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an integral part of the European Union’s border management strategy, designed to register the movement of non-EU nationals entering and exiting the EU/Schengen Area. Upon its eventual implementation, the EES will serve as a crucial tool for bolstering security within the Schengen area, a coalition of 26 European countries that operate under open border and trade policies. The system will enable e cient tracking of individuals crossing into

Guardamar del Segura studies osting an artificial dog beach near Parque Sur

The Guardamar del Segura City Council is studying hosting an arti cial canine beach near Parque Sur owned by the municipality, in a natural and recreation area where there is one of the ve canine parks that the municipality has. It would be around 2,500 square meters dedicated to the installation of an infrastructure where pets and their owners could enjoy a day of bathing.

This has been indicated by the mayor of Guardamar , José Luis Sáez, on Radio Orihuela Cadena

and out of the Schengen zone, while also identifying potential overstay violations, ensuring more e ective visa and travel regulation enforcement.

The Spanish government’s ongoing e orts to equip its border checkpoints with the advanced Entry/Exit System technology underscore its commitment to fortifying national and regional security measures in collaboration with cutting-edge industry leaders like Thales. As the timeline for EES implementation remains uid, Spain’s proactive approach positions it well to adapt to evolving border control requirements in the modern era of travel.

SER, given the absence of dog beaches in the town and the great demand for the service. However, the project requires a powerful investment that would need a grant from another administration to be able to execute it.

This is one of the alternatives proposed by the mayor given the impossibility of the city council to enable a dog beach on its 11 linear kilometers of coastline, since more than 76% have the cataloging of natural beaches, which exempts them for this service. The only option left is 2.5

kilometers in an urban area, but according to reports from the le initiated in 2017 for this task, they indicate that it would mean the loss of the blue ag.

Environmental measures are increasingly demanding and it is quite di cult for Guardamar to allocate any of its beaches for dogs, but the mayor is sensitive to this need and has assured that he is working to o er some aquatic infrastructure for dogs, since in addition the municipal ordinance prohibits the presence of pets on its beaches.

Benejuzar awards contracts for the improvement of utilities

The Consistory allocates 133,550 euros to the works to replace the drinking water network and 6,957 euros to the study for the implementation of energy communities in the town.

Benejúzar

The Benejúzar Town Council has approved the award of two contracts valued at 140,508 euros. The rst of these, as indicated by the Mayor and head of the Department of Finance, Vicente Cases, allocates 133,550 euros to the start of the third phase of the works to replace the drinking water network in Zone 8, as well as the general network in Avenida de Las Canteras. With this action, consisting of replacing the pipes with more suitable materials and replacing the house connections, “we are solving a recurring problem in this area of the municipality, which su ers numerous occasional breaks and frequent supply cuts caused by expansion and settlement of the ground due to the state of these pipes,” said Cases.

The second of the approved contracts is dedicated to the drafting of a study for the development and implementation of the system of energy communities in Benejúzar. In this way, “we will have a plan to develop in our municipality these societies,

composed of groups of people, entities or companies associated with each other to produce, distribute or consume energy in a collaborative and sustainable way,” said the mayor. Cases assured that this system “will serve to promote the use of renewable energies and the improvement of energy e ciency, as well as serving for their e cient and egalitarian use”. The approval of this award has been made through a minor contract amounting to 6,957 euros.

Approval of seven tenders for works

The Mayor of Benejúzar has also pointed out that the Council has initiated procedures for the tendering of seven actions “very necessary and aimed at improving spaces in the municipality, some of them charged to the municipal co ers. This is the case of the installation of seven outdoor hydrant points in di erent parts of the town centre and surrounding areas, with a budget of 15,245 euros, and which aims to provide an adequate and immediate water supply for the re brigade in the event of re. Likewise, and also charged to the municipal budget, the Town Hall has planned the installation of a bus

shelter at the IES Benejúzar bus stop. An action that has a budget of 9,075 euros and that “will allow school transport users can be sheltered from adverse weather conditions,” said Cases.

The City Council has also contemplated the tendering of contracts of varying amounts, which will be nanced with the help of various institutional subsidies.

mayor pointed out the advantages of this change, as this type of bulb “o ers a higher quality of light with greater sustainability and savings in billing, as well as more e cient management”. This action is budgeted at 460,489 euros, which joins the 34,999 euros that will go towards the installation of solar LED luminaires on the cemetery and La Pilarica roads.

along the perimeter of the municipality, which will join the existing route that connects the town centre with the high school, the sports facilities and the mountain,” said the mayor. These works also have a grant from the Generalitat Valenciana for actions aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility included in the Vega Renhace Plan, with a base budget of 171,033 euros.

These include the replacement of conventional lighting with LED bulbs and the implementation of a remote management system for the entire town centre, with the exception of Zone 8, where they have already been modi ed, all within the framework of the Plani ca 2020-2023 grants from the Alicante Provincial Council. The

Another of the works to be put out to tender, “and which is part of our intention to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly municipality”, said Cases, is the installation of new self-consumption photovoltaic panels in municipal buildings such as the sports pavilion, the auditorium, the CEIP Antonio Sequeros school and the swimming pool, as well as increasing the existing ones in the medical clinic and the Town Hall itself. The base tender budget is 293,239 euros, also subsidised by the Alicante Provincial Council’s Plani ca 2020-2023.

The local government has included in these tenders the improvement of public spaces to encourage the use of bicycles and other sustainable transport. To this end, “we are going to build a cycle lane and a pedestrian path

The Town Hall has also put out to tender the repair work on the two tennis courts in the sports facilities in the La Pilarica area, which at the moment “are not in optimal conditions for use by private users or for the students of the municipal tennis school, so we are going to undertake improvements to the playing surface and the renovation of the marking lines,” said the mayor. This action, subsidised by the Provincial Council of Alicante and framed in the Plan + Sport, has a base budget of 56,582 euros. The mayor has positively valued these initiatives, “which seek to renovate the environment of the municipality in a responsible and e cient manner”, and added that “we continue to ful l our commitment to improve the lives of the residents of our town, applying for the necessary subsidies and through a management based on sustainability and common sense”.

A new blue dragon specimen appears on the beach of La Mata

A bather located the specimen that is not typical of the Mediterranean Sea

The discovery of a new specimen of a blue dragon (Glaucus atlanticus) in our waters, speci cally on the beach of La Mata in Torrevieja, can once again be described as extraordinary .

What is surprising is that blue dragons are mollusks of tropical origin and not at all common in the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, when the last specimens were found on our coasts in the summer of 2021, there had been no record of this species for more than three hundred years. species with this geographical location , according to the study and scienti c article in which the municipal biologist of Torrevieja, Juan Antonio Pujol, worked.

Crónicas Naturales de Torrevieja reports that the new appearance of the blue dragon took place this past August 16 when a bather located it alive on the shore and handed it over to the Torrevieja City Council lifeguard service managed by the Eulen company. In addition, that day, they also found a blue snail (Janthina spp.), one of the species that the blue dragon preys on.

Unfortunately, the found blue dragon died shortly after and is deposited in the department of Zoology of the University of Murcia. The appointment is already registered in the Biodiversity Data Bank of the Valencian Community.

First described in 1705

The blue dragon was rst described by the German-Polish physician and naturalist Johann Philipp Breyne in 1705 after identifying some specimens collected south of Ibiza. Until August 2021, there would be no record of the eight blue dragons that appeared on the coasts of Guardamar del Segura, Orihuela and Torrevieja. Subsequently,

another one was also observed in Jávea and in the spring of this year 2023 there is graphic evidence of another one in Italian waters.

The arrival of the blue sea dragon in the Mediterranean is due to the fact that it has been dragged by the Atlantic currents as it is a small mollusk that lives oating on the surface of the sea. Other characteristics of blue dragons is in their diet, since they feed on organisms that also live oating on the surface of the sea and are capable of concentrating in their tissues the stinging cells characteristic of the species they consume, such as the Portuguese man-ofwar.

GBP

GBP / EUR UPDATE

It has not been a great week for the pound, with GBP/ USD losing around 1.5% from the high, before stabilising somewhat near a two-month low of 1.2560. Similarly, GBP/EUR moved swiftly back under 1.1700, having previously topped a one month high. Incoming data has been a key driver to sterling weakness, with the latest PMI surveys further questioning the economic outlook and highlighting an increasing probability that Q3 will end with a shrinking UK economy. Yuck. The composite PMI collapsed from 50.8 in July, to 47.9 in August on a preliminary basis, marking the lowest reading for the survey since the January 2021 COVID lockdown period.

The slowdown mirrors the reduction in output during Q3 2022, at a time when many businesses reverted to decreased activity to mark the Queen’s funeral. S&P Global Market Intelligence now think that GDP in Q3 will decline by around 0.2%, highlighting that the ght against in ation is carrying a heavy cost in terms of heightened recession risks.’

With services PMI slipping to 51 from 52.3 and manufacturing declining from 49 to 47, higher interest rates are clearly impacting all facets of UK output. The news will undoubtedly put further pressure on the BoE to pause the current cycle of rate hikes, especially given big slowdowns in interest rate-sensitive industries and the property market. That could then put further pressure on the pound, as traders price in the reduced probability of further BoE hikes, especially given the tentative signs of lower core in ation over the past two months.

On a brighter note, the latest data con rmed that Public Sector Net Borrowing hit £4.3bn during July, well down from the £6bn forecast by the OBR and was clearly aided by a big increase in tax receipts, which the OBR referred to as ‘strong.’ That has led to calls for tax cuts, although the government appear to retain a more cautious strategy, at least for the time being.

With a quiet schedule on UK data next week, the pound is likely to take its lead from the broader moves in the dollar.

EUR

Much the same as in the UK, incoming PMI surveys paint a rather dismal economic outlook throughout Europe. If you were in the glass half full brigade, you could perhaps point to an improvement among German and Regional manufacturing PMI, with the former rising from 38.8 to 39.1 during August (PRELIM), and the latter rising from 42.7 to 43.7 over the same period, albeit with both rising from a low base, and well below the 50 (expansionary/contractionary) threshold.

However, team glass half empty still have a much bigger advantage, given the already low levels of manufacturing output, which looks worryingly to be morphing into the services sector. Take Germany for example, and whilst we might all think of Germany as Europe’s big factory, nearly 70% of German GDP* is generated from the services sector, so the sudden slowdown really matters.

*As of 2022. Data supplied by Statista

Both German and Regional services PMIs slipped below 50 during the latest surveys, with the former moving from 52.3 to 47.3, and the latter from 50.9 to 48.3. Of course, this will put the ECB into a tight corner, as they decide on whether they have enough wriggle room to squeeze another hike out of the bottle at their September meeting. Markets currently expect a less than 50% probability of a further rate hike before the end of this year. That probably tells you much. ECB president Lagarde will be speaking at the Jackson Hole symposium later today (Friday), during which she may give more clues as to the ECB’s next move.

Looking into next week, we are set to get key in ation updates throughout the region, and any clear signs of moderation in in ation will clearly take some of the pressure away from the ECB. Further evidence of current consumer sentiment is likely to come from the latest Retail Sales data.

As for the single currency, EUR/USD has declined for 6 straight weeks now from a high of above 1.1200, to a low at under 1.0800. For the single currency to stabilise, aside from signs of any economic recovery, markets will also need to witness broadly positive risk sentiment.

The secound edition of the “Sandra Alonso Campus Torrevieja” of cycling, to be held mid-November

My niece has been invited to my home regularly for teas, Sunday lunches, barbecues etc ever since she lost her mother. I have remembered birthdays and Christmas, and sent gifts every year. Last month it was her birthday; a special one. I asked her what she wanted to do for celebrations; she said nothing was planned - she didn’t want any fuss. I messaged her to ask if I could drop by on the day, but she said I could come two days earlier to give her a present and card. She

invited me in, but later asked if in future I could give her cash instead of a present and also do the same for her children. I have noticed a cooling off from her generally, and I left feeling downhearted. Something told me to go and see her on her actual birthday. She kept me on the doorstep and looked flustered; I saw evidence of food preparation in the kitchen, and asked her what it was for - she just said she doing some baking. I left, again feeling downcast, but this time very annoyed. Later in the afternoon I made a point of driving

by the house. There were cars on the drive, and cars parked on the pavement; she was clearly having a party, and I was not invited. I am very hurt; I want to say something but I feel that I no longer want a relationship with her.

I would write her a hand-written letter, not a phone message, and tell her that you know she had a party and kept it from you. Don’t show any anger but say you are disappointed in her. If you want to back off, you can still send her children gifts, but don’t send the cash that she has asked for. Instead put presents in the post.

“What is a cost-e ective way of monitoring my property when I am away from it?“

Internet-connected CCTV cameras which send alerts to your Smartphone are a good choice. They are easy to set up and install provided where you site them is within range of a Wi-Fi signal.

CCTV cameras are an e ective deterrent to potential intruders as it increases the risk of identi cation through the camera footage. Having an obvious CCTV system, alarm or another security measure, makes the house appear to be a more di cult target so they will likely move on to the next house. Modern CCTV systems can be monitored through mobile phone apps which allows people to view live footage of their house from anywhere they have internet coverage. Some systems provide motion detection so when movement is detected, an alert can be sent to a phone.

Privacy laws in Spain are very restrictive. By law, you cannot record anyone’s property or the occupants of another property. When guring out where you can point your CCTV cameras, you must ensure signs are visible to everyone who can be seen by them. For example, if a camera is pointing outside of your property,

then those it may capture should be able to see the signs. Signs should be large enough to act as a deterrent, too.

“What is the best way to store contacts, so they are the same on all my devices?”

If you have an Android device, it requires a Google account. The bene t of this is that you can choose to save your contacts to your Google account. This way as soon as you save a contact, it will immediately sync with your account meaning you can log in to your Google account and have all your contacts already accessible.

You then have access to Google on any other device (Windows PC, Apple Computer, iPhone, iPad, Android Tablet) and if you sign into Google you will have access to Google contacts.

“Where should I store my passwords?“

Never store passwords on a device that connects to the internet. Do NOT use the same password for everything. I recommend writing your passwords in a small hardback notebook or on a USB memory stick.

Petita the elephant celebrates 51stbirthday

The elephant Petita is getting ready to exceed half a century of life in the nature and animal park Terra Natura Benidorm. The Asian elephant turned 51 years old on Saturday 26th August. During this time, a team of veterinarians and caregivers of the park has accompanied and maintained the welfare of this elephant through a complete protocol of daily care, enrichment activities, veterinary check-ups, among other actions aimed at preserving their health.

Elephants usually live to be around 60 years old. Petita, year after year, gets older and starts to need some special care due to his longevity. On a daily basis, the team of experts at Terra Natura Benidorm check her weight, dentition, legs, eyes, digestive tract and state of mind. They are also given a balanced and varied diet with easily digestible food such as feed, fodder, fruit and vegetables to avoid possible intestinal obstructions.

If any problems are detected in their dentition, even the fodder is chopped so that they can ingest the food without complication and a soft diet is administered to facilitate the intake of the food. This care helps the elephants to achieve greater longevity. These animals are in danger

of conservation and are therefore part of the Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP), promoted by the EAZA.

To commemorate the birthday of the elephant, who was rejected by her herd because she did not meet the canons of beauty of the species, a Hindu Holi festival will be organised in the Asia area of Terra Natura Benidorm next to the two elephant meadows, which have an area of 18,000 square metres and a pond area for the animals to bathe and refresh themselves.

The emotional celebration will begin with the arrival of an Indian entertainment group that will welcome the public to the Pangea area from 11.00 am. Visitors will be able to wear the traditional bindi or tidak on their foreheads, which according to Hindu culture symbolises wisdom. The procession will then move on to the park’s amphitheatre and once the informative birds of prey show is over, the o ering of fruit and vegetables for Petita and her companion Kaiso will begin in the elephant meadows.

Both elephants will be able to taste this great dessert prepared by their caregivers with apples, tomatoes, watermelons, among other fruits and vegetables. After tasting this dessert, the popular song ‘Happy Birthday’

will be sung to the elephant Petita. In the village of Namastepur, the Holi festival will take place, in which more than 320 kilos of pigmented powder, 3,500 bottles of coloured water and 10 cannons with coloured powder under pressure will be used.

Petita’s story

When Petita arrived at Terra Natura Benidorm in 2004, she was initially discriminated against by her herd, as she was considered ugly by her peers due to her thinness and according to the canons of her species. In the

eyes of her peers, this thinness made her physically unattractive. However, thanks to the help of her inseparable companion, Kaiso, the elephant overcame this rejection and was nally accepted by the herd until she was fully integrated.

HELP Vega Baja is a registered charity that has been providing much needed support to people in the Vega Baja area for over 45 years. Crescendo International Choir to Begin Rehearsals in September

Crescendo International

Choir will begin rehearsals again Monday, September 4. Rehearsals will take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos between 17:45 to 20:00 every Monday night.

The choir last gathered to perform a well-attended free concert June 17, at The Club, in Quesada, a new venue for the choir. New singers are most welcome to join us. Here are the songs we sang at our last concert to give prospective

new members an idea of our repertoire.

Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps, I Say a Little Prayer for You, Make you Feel my Love, The Rose, What a Wonderful World, You Raise me Up, The Rhythm of Life, Sway, City of Stars, Amapola, Historia de un Amor, Clavelitos and Les Misérables. For more details about the choir, see crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@

crescendo-choir.com.

The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. We especially need more basses. Our current choir includes people from England, Scotland, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. This is why we are called Crescendo International Choir. Our Music Director, Irene Oliva, and pianist, Antonio Guillen, are accomplished Spanish musicians.

Kerry Katona and Brian McFadden’s daughter Lilly, 20, admits her famous parents have put her o marriage for life

Kerry Katona’s daughter says she’s been put o marriage for life after her famous parents’ various divorces.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline in her rst ever interview, Lilly McFadden, 20, admits her mother’s split from her father Brian, one of her three husbands, has taught her marriage is worthless.

She says ex-Westlife star Brian, who has also been divorced twice, rst with Kerry, then model Vogue Williams, is further proof ‘people change and can grow apart from their partner.’

Lilly opened up about the negative side to having famous parents – with ‘people trying to hate’ the family in the height of Kerry’s fame – as well as her ‘beautiful’ blended family and being a ‘nepo baby’ in an interview with MailOnline.

Asked what she had learned most from her parents, Lilly said: ‘Not to get married! Personally, I’m not a “marriage girl.” I never have been and it’s no re ection on my mum, it’s a bit of an inside joke.

It’s a scene many parents can relate to, you’re in the car and at the worst possible time you hear those dreaded four words ‘I need a wee’.

That is exactly what happened when Kate was with her daughter Princess Charlotte while driving in London.

And to the shock of punters, the royal pair chose to make a surprise stop at a pub in south London to use the toilet.

The third in line to the throne nipped into The Phoenix in Stockwell to use the ladies after she was caught short while travelling on the busy A3 trunk

Regulars and sta were taken aback by the visit with one punter joking at the time: ‘It just goes to show that the royals are like any other family. When your kid needs to go to the loo, they got to go!’

Princess Charlotte, who was three at the time, was led into the local boozer by her mother, the Princess of Wales, who held her hand.

A plain-clothed female detective from the Royal Protection Squad went into the pub a few minutes ahead of the royal pair to check the toilets.

Maggie McKinney, a regular at the friendly street corner pub, told MailOnline: ‘I was sitting in my usual chair and when I looked up I saw Kate Middleton, I mean the Duchess of Cambridge (now the Princess of Wales) and her daughter Princess Charlotte.

‘They seem very nice, totally normal. Princess Kate was holding her daughter’s hand.

Princess Charlotte was just any other little girl.’

Widow Maggie, 76, a regular for the past 26 years, added: ‘The Phoenix is a lovely little pub, very friendly.’

Parkinson’s signs that could indicate the onset of the disease

Parkinson’s is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that a ects the central nervous system, speci cally the nerve cells that control movement. It is characterised by a gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in a region of the brain called black matter.

It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, after Alzheimer’s disease.

The symptoms of the disease, and the most recognised ones, are motor symptoms: tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia or slowness in movements, gait alteration, and postural re exes.

There may also be changes in the voice, facial expression, and handwriting. As the disease progresses, the symptoms can worsen, and other problems may appear, such as depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Doctor Erika Torres, head of the Advanced Neuroscience Unit at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante, explains what Parkinson’s disease symptoms consist of, the tests for its detection, and which risk factors are modi able.

Frequent Age of Parkinson’s

The disease usually appears in the sixth decade of life, and the risk of it developing increases with age, however, it is not uncommon to be diagnosed before 50 or 40 years of age.

Parkinson’s Symptoms in Adult Patients

Motor Symptoms

Motor symptoms are an essential part of the diagnostic criteria and the key symptoms of the disease.

Motor symptoms include a tremor, although not all patients with tremors have Parkinson’s disease, and not all Parkinson’s disease patients present tremors.

There are patients that, on the

other hand, show movement defects where rigidity and slowness in movements predominate, associated with diminished facial expression and gait instability. There can also be alterations in posture and postural re exes, responsible for the falls su ered by these patients, generally in more advanced stages of the disease.

Non-Motor Symptoms

As for the non-motor symptoms, these are related to: gastrointestinal alterations (constipation), cognitive alterations, sleep alterations, dysautonomic alterations, language alterations, pain, and emotional alterations such as anxiety and despondency.

Tests for Parkinson’s Diagnosis

The diagnosis of the disease is clinical, and is mainly based on the interview with the patient and a physical examination by a neurologist with experience in the movement disorder eld. However, there are also complementary examinations that can help reach a diagnosis in questionable or somewhat more complex cases. For this, a general blood test is performed, along with a cranial CT scan or a cerebral MRI, which help rule out systemic diseases and structural cerebral pathologies that may produce similar symptoms.

“We must consider that not all patients present all symptoms or evolve in the same way, since this disease has a signi cant variability in its expression,” explains Dr Torres.

Parkinson’s, a Hereditary Disease?

Most Parkinson’s disease cases have an idiopathic cause; however, there is a small

percentage that is related to family inheritance and, therefore, is or genetic origin. This would be approximately 15% of cases.

To be somewhat more speci c, around 2-3% of cases of late onset will be caused by a mutation, and 50% of cases of early onset will also be traced to a genetic cause.

We can group risk factors into two categories: genetic and non-genetic.

As for non-genetic factors, these in turn can be divided into modi able and non-modi able risk factors.

Non-Modi able Risk Factors

Non-modi able risk factors are age, gender, and race. Getting older can increase the risk of developing the disease, but it does not seem to be the main aetiological risk factor.

It is unlikely for gender to in uence the risk of su ering from the disease, but it is slightly more common in men than in women.

Additionally, the disease has been observed to be less prevalent on the African continent, compared to Europe and North America.

Modi able Risk Factors

Modi able risk factors include smoking and exposure to pesticides, which increase the risk of developing the disease, while physical exercise, when practised energetically in middle age, can protect us from su ering this pathology; consumption of ca eine or tea also seems to protect us from developing Parkinson’s disease.

At Quirónsalud we have specialists in Advanced Neuroscience to help you detect the symptoms of the disease. Bring your questions to the team.

Spanish football president accuses Jenni Hermoso of lying over kiss at Women’s World Cup final

Jenni Hermoso said she did not consent to being kissed by Spain’s FA president during the World Cup Final awards ceremony.

Embattled Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales has used his federation to accuse World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso of lying by saying she did not consent to being kissed by him.

The federation also threatened legal action to defend Mr Rubiales. The latest de ant statement from the 46-year-old came in the early hours of Saturday morning amid mounting pressure from within Spanish football and the government for him to resign.

It was expected Mr Rubiales was going to step down on Friday - before going on the attack against his accusers in a speech at a federation assembly.

That sparked an outcry from Hermoso and her teammates who vowed not to play for their country

again - days after winning the World Cup for the rst time.

In a statement on Friday night the 33-year-old forward and key contributor to Spain’s victory, said “in no moment” did she consent to the kiss.

The Spanish football federation’s lengthy statement showed a series of images claiming to be Hermoso encouraging being lifted by Mr Rubiales.

“Mr President’s feet are ostensibly lifted from the ground as a result of the player’s action,” the statement said.

“The tests are conclusive. Mr President has not lied.

“The RFEF and Mr President will demonstrate each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or, if applicable, by the player herself.”

The statement threatened legal action, saying that playing for the

national team “is an obligation for all members of the federation if they are called up”.

The federation said it regretted the row was taking away from the World Cup success it wanted to celebrate.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 22nd of August we shed the third round of the Autumn series at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. Lots of changes are being made at the complex the main one being the widening of pegs 17 to 25 which is shown in the photograph. 18 anglers attended and we decided to on this occasion sh every peg on pegs a1 to 16 and we were split into four di erent sections.

Winner on the day from peg 11 from what was by far the best section was Bob Robinson. Bob has been in impressive form of late and has won the last three matches on the trot. Bob shed the method feeder about a metre from the far bank with 6mm pellet as a hook bait. He caught small

carp on a regular basis along with the odd mullet for 31.68kg.

In second place on the adjacent peg 10 was yours truly Ian brown. I used similar method feeder tactics with micros in the feeder with dead maggots as a hookbait. This was the only bait I could get a quick bite on and as a result weighed 18kg of Mullet along with 11.28kg of carp for a combined weight of 29.28kg.

In third place was the young venue specialist Neil McBernie who winkled out 26.80kg of mainly carp on pellet or maggot from peg B1.

The other section winner and fourth in the match was Paul Burton who shed the method feeder on the pole from peg 16 and weighed 26.18kg.

Rods N Reels

The following day members of this club shed a knock up at the same venue. Only 7 anglers turned up in the extreme heat and Terry Brindley doing the organising decided that we were shing pegs 26 to 38 with a gap inbetween.

Peg 26 has for some time been one of the most consistent pegs and Neil Bomford was happy to sh it following his previous days blankety blank. Neil made no mistake and shed the pole across to take samll carp on a regular basis for 33.175kg.

In Second place and also redeeming himself after a similar previous days blank was John Havercroft . John was on peg 28 and used similar pole tactics for18.025kg.

In third place was myself from peg

38. I shed the method feeder towards the bush to my left and tried every hookbait known to man but once again the majority of my sh were mullet. I did get broke 4 times in the bush with bigger carp and was surprised to weigh 13.350kg. For further details please visit our website www. abbeyangling.es
