San Miguel road works cause 2km detour for six months

Alicante, follows several inspections conducted by road surveillance teams from the Generalitat, which revealed signi cant deterioration in various structural elements of the bridge, including pavement subsidence, pillar undermining, and vault degradation.

Responding to the urgent need for action, the Consell recently approved the declaration of urgency for the reconstruction works, allocating a budget of 2.6 million euros. These vital repairs are expected to span six months, during which time the a ected section of the CV-95 will be closed to tra c. In an o cial announcement published recently in the O cial Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV), it was con rmed that the a ected stretch of the CV-95 will be inaccessible for the

duration of the reconstruction project. However, an alternative route has been designated to facilitate tra c ow during this period. However, this will see drivers take a 2km detour, which is expected to cause congestion at peak tra c ow times. It is believed that the detour will impact around 10,000 drivers a day after the Generalitat ruled out creating a provisional parallel road, that would have o ered a speedier alternative route.

New Route

For motorists travelling in the direction of Orihuela - Torrevieja, an exit will be available shortly before reaching Lo Quiles, directing drivers through the roundabout towards Solozabal Street and onwards to Ronda Oeste, where they can rejoin the CV-95. Similarly, those heading in the opposite direction, Torrevieja - Orihuela, will follow the same route in reverse.

The announcement was made by the San Miguel council on Friday in a 40-word statement, attaching the map with the alternative route, although with no explanation. The message with “sorry for the inconvenience.”

The closure and subsequent reconstruction signify a concerted e ort to address critical infrastructure concerns and ensure the safety of road users traversing the CV-95. Authorities urge all commuters to adhere to the designated alternative routes and exercise caution in the vicinity of the construction site.

Spain to witness three spectacular solar eclipses

Following the recent “Great American Eclipse,” attention now turns to Spain as the country gears up to experience not one, but three major solar eclipses over the next three years. While the United States will have to wait until 2033 for its next total solar eclipse, Spain is set to take centre stage in the celestial phenomenon.

Despite not being the rst choice for eclipse watchers, Spain will host a trio of remarkable events, with the cities of Madrid and Barcelona missing out on the spectacle. Here’s what you need to know about Spain’s upcoming solar eclipses:

Total Solar Eclipse 2026Although the east coast of Spain, including Valencia, may seem like the ideal location, the eclipse’s path will actually favor the northwest, particularly areas like Galicia, Santander, Bilbao, and Gijon. With the sun setting 10 degrees above the west, towns such as Panenica, Burgos, and Valladolid are expected to o er the best viewing opportunities.

Total Solar Eclipse 2027 - This eclipse will o er a breathtaking spectacle along Spain’s southern coast, with totality reaching its peak duration of 4 minutes and 39 seconds in Tarifa. Anywhere between Cadiz and Malaga will fall within the path of totality, with the event occurring approximately 37 degrees above the eastern horizon postbreakfast.

Annular Solar Eclipse 2028 - The “ring of re” phenomenon, lasting up to an impressive 7 minutes and 10 seconds, will predominantly take place over the Gulf of Cadiz. However, it will still be visible from select locations along Spain’s coastline, particularly from the Portuguese border to Tarifa. Expect this pre-sunset eclipse to be approximately 8 degrees above the western horizon.

For avid eclipse chasers, the allure of relocating to Spain may be strong, but their stay may be short-lived. Following Spain’s trilogy, Australia is poised to host four total solar eclipses in 2028, 2030, 2037, and 2038, promising further celestial wonders for enthusiasts around the globe.

Progress made in resolving beach bars despite Easter delay

After facing delays in opening the beach bars as promised for Easter, the Orihuela Government team is making headway in resolving the contract issues. Despite the setback, the Contracting Board announced the award of two groups of bars on, with just one lot remaining to be awarded after last week’s announcements.

The newly awarded lots include tender number 2 covering Cala

Cerrada, Cala Bosque, and Cala Capitán, as well as number 3 covering La Caleta and Aguamarina. Adem Levante, the previous concessionaire operating under the Chiringuitos del Sol trademark, secured the successful bid.

Adem Levante o ered an annual fee of 802,814 euros for the rst lot and 403,881 euros for the second batch, signi cantly higher than the Council’s initial fee request. The

beach bars in Cala Bosque (La Zenia) and La Caleta will operate yearround, along with their respective services, such as toilets.

There are also nancial bene ts for the Council, which will now double its previous income from beach bars and water sports services, projecting an annual revenue close to two million euros compared to the previous 900,000 euros.

The contracts for Punta Prima,

Cala Mosca, and Cala Estaca are still pending, while Cafe Olé & Friends secured the bars on the beaches of La Glea, Barranco Rubio, and Mil Palmeras, and Recreativos Acuáticos Horadada obtained the nautical sports contract. It is believed that La Caleta will be the rst to open, hopefully before the end of this month.

Anti-fraud agency probes Orihuela Council over illegal billboards

The Valencian Anti-Fraud Agency (AVAF) has launched an investigation into the Orihuela council concerning the allegedly unlawful placement of more than 50 advertising installations, comprising billboards and digital screens. Predominantly situated along the National 332 road and streets branching o the main road, these installations have drawn attention for their potential violations of urban planning regulations.

Dating back to late December 2023, the investigation looked into documentation provided by the Council. The ndings revealed a stark contrast, with only three applications for the installation of advertising hoardings, whilst the actual number of installations far exceeded the trio of authorised permits.

The Agency’s report recommends that the council undertake measures to rectify the urban planning infractions, prioritising the sides of the N-332 due to the density of illicit

installations. This entails initiating procedures to legalise existing advertising elements, whether a xed to buildings, land structures, or real estate properties, that out municipal regulations.

The Council has been granted a three-month window, following receipt of the investigation’s resolution, to notify the Agency that it has made a start on the recommended actions or provide justi cations for non-compliance with the directives.

The outcome of the investigation holds signi cant implications for urban planning and regulatory adherence within the municipality. As authorities navigate the complexities of rectifying urban planning irregularities, stakeholders await the Council’s response and subsequent actions to restore legal compliance in the realm of advertising installations across Orihuela.

Tender issued for Costa Civic Centre cafe

The Department of Social Welfare has o cially launched the bidding process for the management of cafeteria and dining services at the Alameda del Mar Civic Centre in Orihuela Costa. Agustina Rodríguez, the councillor overseeing the department, unveiled the initiative with the primary aim of catering to the needs of both civic centre users and the wider public, emphasising the delivery of highquality service.

While priority will be accorded to centre users, the contract also extends service provisions to external customers, ensuring consistent quality standards throughout. The single-contract agreement, spanning a minimum term of three years with extension possibilities as per legal stipulations, is set at an annual fee of 6,300 euros. This nominal fee aims to uphold the nancial viability of operations while accommodating the speci c demands of centre users.

The tender process follows the resolution of the previous administrative contract with a company marred by repeated breaches, including unannounced cafeteria closures for

multiple days, as outlined in a municipal technicians’ report.

The Department of Social Welfare rea rms its dedication to delivering top-notch services at the Alameda del Mar centre. The bidding process seeks to select a company aligning with

established standards to ensure optimal user satisfaction. Rodríguez expresses optimism that the selected company will uphold contractual obligations without disruptions, thereby maintaining the uninterrupted provision of this highly sought-after service.

Spanish Congress considers granting residency to undocumented Immigrants

The Spanish Congress is set to deliberate on legislation that could extend residency and work permits to approximately 470,000 undocumented immigrants currently residing in Spain. This proposal, propelled by citizen initiative, garnered over 700,000 signatures and garnered support from a coalition of nearly 900 organisations, spanning migrant rights groups to Catholic associations. In a decisive vote, Members of Parliament voted 310-33 in favour of considering the proposal, with the far-right Vox party emerging as the sole dissenting voice. The bill will now progress through the lower house of parliament, where it will undergo extensive debate and potential

amendments before reaching its nal form. If enacted, the legislation would confer legal status upon immigrants who entered Spain before 1st November, 2021, encompassing a signi cant number of individuals from Latin America and Africa. Beyond providing legal residency and employment opportunities, the law aims to facilitate tax contributions,

access to social security bene ts, and utilization of public services including healthcare and education.

According to proponents of the initiative, an estimated 390,000 to 470,000 undocumented immigrants currently inhabit Spain, often subsisting in the informal economy as agricultural laborers, caregivers, delivery personnel, and in other

essential yet low-wage occupations overlooked by native Spaniards. Lacking legal protections, these individuals are susceptible to exploitation and abuse.

The bill aims to rectify the invisibility and precariousness experienced by undocumented migrants, striving to uphold their rights on par with legal residents.

Interterritorial Council spearheads antiSmoking plan in Spain

The Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) has met to formulate a comprehensive plan aimed at curbing smoking prevalence across Spain. With a focus on implementing stringent regulations and diminishing the allure of tobacco products, the Council is poised to brig in measures to restrict smoking in additional public spaces and render tobacco products less appealing.

Emphasising the signi cance of this initiative for bolstering public health and well-being, Mónica García, the Minister of Health, said that the plan will swiftly transition from concept to reality.

Following the conclusion of the meeting, García underscored the plan’s pivotal role in positioning Spain as a frontrunner in the global ght against tobacco. “This plan would not have been possible without dialogue and the willingness to agree on tackling the tobacco epidemic,” she a rmed,

acknowledging the collaborative e orts of various stakeholders including autonomous communities, scienti c societies, patient organizations, youth groups, public health bodies, and healthcare professionals.

Describing the plan as pioneering, ambitious, and resolute, García outlined its multifaceted approach towards legislative advancements. Upon approval, the focus will shift towards the development of laws aimed at translating the outlined objectives into tangible actions. Key regulatory areas include standardising rules governing tobacco advertising, sponsorship, and promotion, as well as addressing novel tobacco products and their equivalence to traditional tobacco, establishment of smoke-free zones, packaging standards, alignment with European regulations, and scal policies.

The Council’s agenda also

encompasses stringent regulations governing tobacco advertisement placements, packaging aesthetics, and pricing strategies. While acknowledging the collaborative spirit that characterised the meeting, García reiterated the inclusive nature of the plan, which draws upon a diverse range of perspectives and insights.

In a signi cant development, the Council also resolved to establish a dedicated working group to further deliberations on healthcare matters, signalling a broader commitment to advancing public health agendas beyond the realm of tobacco control. As the Council sets its sights on a future marked by reduced smoking prevalence and improved public health outcomes, the groundwork laid by this comprehensive plan is poised to pave the way for transformative legislative strides in the ght against tobacco addiction.

Two arrested for stealing safe from Catral home

Agents of the National Police have arrested two men in Elche, aged 30 and 32, who had just committed a robbery with force in a home in the town of Catral. Inside the vehicle they carried a safe, a multitude of electronic devices and cash, among others. The two detainees, of Colombian nationality, have been placed at the disposal of the Elche Guard Court of Investigation.

During a road checkpoint in Elche, a vehicle in which two occupants were traveling was stopped, having shown erratic and nervous behavior in response to the rst questions asked in the control lter, a super cial inspection of the car was carried out, nding inside a safe.

The actors asked the occupants about the origin of said e ect, although suddenly one of those questioned got out of the vehicle and began a

lightning ight on foot that led to the chase, in the same way, by two of the police members of the group. control. After running just over 500 meters, they managed to reach and subdue this individual who resisted, attacked the o cials and even bit one of them on the hand to avoid his arrest.

In the same period of time in which this outrageous situation occurred, the other occupant also began a struggle to try to elude two other members of the unit. He also physically attacked the police o cers with the intention of not being arrested. As a result of the attacks, two of the agents were slightly injured.

The results of the investigations were immediate, managing to locate the owner of a bank card that the detainees were carrying and that did not correspond to their a liations. Indeed, said owner

and his wife had su ered a forceful robbery at his home located in Catral that same morning and had been robbed; a multitude of electronic devices, perfumes, cash and the safe that contained three watches from a prestigious luxury brand valued between 6,000 and 9,000 euros, all of them.

Once the appropriate veri cations regarding ownership had been carried out, the police o cers attached to the investigation group delivered the objects to their legitimate owners and attributed the new act to the alleged perpetrators, in this case that of robbery with force at home. The two detainees, two men, of Colombian nationality, aged 30 and 32, were placed at the disposal of the Elche Guard Court of Investigation.

Spain approves elimination of Golden Visa Scheme

In a move aimed at reshaping the dynamics of its real estate market and addressing concerns regarding potential economic pitfalls, Spain’s cabinet has greenlit measures to abolish the country’s contentious golden visa scheme. Introduced in 2013 amidst the aftermath of a housing market crash and the euro currency crisis, the scheme was designed to inject vitality into the property sector by o ering residency rights to a uent foreigners making investments in real estate.

Critics have long voiced concerns over the scheme’s adverse e ects, citing in ationary pressures and the potential for illicit funds to permeate the economy through this avenue. Responding to these mounting concerns, the government under the leadership of Pedro Sanchez pledged in October to phase out the program. “We are going

to take the necessary measures to ensure that housing is a right and not just a speculative business,” emphasised Sanchez.

According to the Minister of Housing, over 14,000 such permits were issued between 2013 and 2023, predominantly to nationals from China and Russia, with signi cant numbers also hailing from the United Kingdom, United States, Iran, and Venezuela, all drawn by the allure of owning property in the Spanish sun.

Despite the considerable uptake of the golden visa scheme, its elimination is not anticipated to exert substantial repercussions on the property market. Data from property website Idealista suggests that purchases made under the scheme accounted for less than 0.1% of the more than four million homes sold during the speci ed period.

Spain’s decision to dismantle

the golden visa scheme comes in the wake of neighbouring Portugal’s recent overhaul of its own program, which now excludes real estate investments as part of e orts to address a housing crisis gripping the nation.

The move aligns with longstanding calls from the European Commission for the termination of such visa schemes, citing security risks and underscoring the lack of genuine residency obligations for bene ciaries, as citizenship is granted with minimal requirements for physical presence within the country.

Marijuana Plantation

discovered in Orihuela

The National Police of Orihuela has arrested a man as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health after the discovery of a marijuana plantation in a ruined construction located in a rural area very close to the urban center of this municipality.

The events occurred when on patrol in the rural area to prevent violent robberies, the agents detected a strong smell of illegal substances in the vicinity of a house in poor condition that did not appear to be inhabited, however, some facilities were found “ complete indoor plants for growing marijuana plants. These facilities had air conditioning, carbon lters, lighting spotlights for technical crops and various accessories to carry out planting work.

The Judicial Police Brigade and the Scienti c Police Brigade of the Orihuela National Police Station were immediately informed to activate the investigation and soon “clues”

were obtained about the possible perpetrators, nding clear indications of the owner who frequented the place. Shortly after, a tracking device was established that resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator who did not want to give a statement regarding the facts for which he was being investigated.

The facility with one hundred and ten plants that they were growing has raised serious suspicions among the agents that the detainee is not the only one responsible for the crime against public health.

The alleged perpetrator, a 37-yearold Spanish man, had a di erent criminal record for other events. The proceedings were brought to the attention of the Orihuela Guard Court of Investigation, leaving them open to seek connections with other possible participants in the crime.

“Hugger Mugger” arrests in Vega Baja

Agents of the National Police have dismantled a traveling criminal group specialized in committing robberies with violence and romantic thefts.

The detainees committed this type of crime on elderly people, taking advantage of distractions, hugs or sexual o ers to steal the jewelry or watches they were wearing.

In total, there were four people arrested, two men and two women, of Romanian nationality, between 28 and 31 years of age, all of them with a multitude of records for similar acts, which were placed at the disposal of the Investigative Courts of Orihuela and Murcia, decreeing the imprisonment of two of the detainees, one of them being the ringleader of the plot and one of the detained women, both of whom had been two of the authors of the robbery that gave rise to the investigation.

The rst investigations began last January, when the agents learned of a robbery with violence in which the perpetrators had used the “loving embrace” technique to steal a highend watch from an elderly man.

In her complaint, the victim told the agents that while she was preparing to enter the garage of her home, a young woman approached her to the window of her vehicle and proposed to have sexual relations. The man, not knowing this woman at all and not understanding her behavior, began to get upset and immediately two more people appeared, a man and another

woman, who after grabbing his wrist began to struggle with him until they managed to snatch the watch he was wearing. .

After the theft, the three people ed aboard a vehicle, being chased by the victim through various streets until he nally lost sight of them.

With the information and characteristics provided by the victim in relation to these people, the investigators located one of the vehicles used to commit the crimes and after carrying out various surveillance and monitoring, they were rst able to identify two of the members of the family clan who They were arrested near Pilar de la Horadada.

The objects they sought to steal were always jewelry, both gold chains with their pendants, and high-end and highly valuable watches acting as a couple, with the women being the ones who got out of the vehicles to commit the criminal acts in person while the men They remained waiting inside the vehicles to facilitate a quick escape after the robbery was committed or even collaborated in case the victim became aware of the theft, not hesitating to use violence on them in order to seize the items. valuable items.

As the investigation advanced, the agents found out that the members of the family clan rented homes far from the urban area to go unnoticed, from which they

moved to nearby towns to look for potential victims, always elderly people, making reservations for the accommodations in their names. of other people who did not have a police record so as not to be detected by the police.

As for the trips, they made them in vehicles that they acquired using documentation from third parties who had no relationship with them, including names of people who had already died, changing vehicles very frequently in order to make police work more di cult. Regarding the stolen e ects, they were jewelry and watches of great value, which after stealing them, other members of the organization sold them to recipients with whom they had contact, in order not to be detected in the legal market.

The investigation has been carried out by the Specialized Crime Group of the Judicial Police Brigade of the Alicante Provincial Police Station, participating and supporting the transfer of the detainees, Citizen Security agents from the Orihuela National Police Station and the Superior Headquarters of Murcia. Investing isn’t only for the rich and is not too complicated

Why invest? This is the deceptively simple question that it’s di cult to start any guide to investing without asking.

But why should anyone bother investing in the rst place?

The question is di cult because people invest for many di erent reasons.

They may have a goal they are aiming for, a retirement pot to build, or are simply driven by the desire to grow their wealth.

But when all the reasons are weighed up, there is something that unites them, and it is to give themselves a better future.

In life, we invest time and e ort in our family, our home, and our work, but the nancial world

of investing o ers an extra element.

It provides ordinary people with a simple way of putting their money to work. It allows people to build up their wealth over time, bene ting from the pro ts and dividends of good companies, and the magic of compounding that magni es those gains over time.

Yet despite the potential for better long-term returns, many people who have plenty of rainyday savings stashed away in cash are still reluctant to invest any extra money they save.

The main reasons they give are often that they aren’t rich enough yet to invest, they do not want to risk losing money, or it is too complicated.

These are valid reasons, but they are not

enough to dismiss investing altogether. It’s true, your investments can fall below the price you paid; but this risk is greatly reduced by long-term investing – and is one you must take to get a better potential return than on cash.

Finally, it’s true that investing does require a little work, but it is surprisingly easy to get started.

The latest GDP growth data for the UK was released this morning. It shows that the UK economy grew 0.1% in February and 0.3% in January (revised up from the 0.2% reported previously), which could indicate the UK economy is rebounding from its technical recession.

While the data aligned with forecasts, it’s worth noting that both the manufacturing and services industries reported growth that exceeded expectations. This positive performance has led some economists to speculate that the UK’s growth for the rst quarter of this year could surpass the 0.1% initially projected by the Bank of England.

The positive growth data could also give the Bank of England more exibility and time on its path towards rate cuts this year.

Rate cuts are still looking likely in the UK this year, as CPI data continues to show that in ation is slowing. The most recent UK CPI reading printed below expectation at 3.4%.

The BoE’s forecasts also show in ation dropping below 2% in the Spring before climbing again in the summer months, so growth data could impact policymakers’ decisions more than slowing in ation.

MPC members Breeden and Greene also spoke on various panel discussions this week, with Megan Greene, one of the more hawkish members of the Bank of England, touching on the possibility of rate cuts. She said in a Financial Times column published on Thursday: “In my view, rate cuts in the UK should still be a way o ”. Markets expectations for the rst rate cut have now moved from August to September and the number of quarter point cuts forecast for the year is down to two.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

EUR

Yesterday, the European Central Bank maintained its rates for the fth consecutive meeting but appeared to hint at a potential rate cut in June. The ECB President, Christine Lagarde, stated, “It would be appropriate to reduce the current level of monetary policy restriction” if in ation continues to move toward its 2% target.

She also nodded to the higher-thanexpected CPI in ation data released in the US this week, saying, “We are not assuming that what happens in the euro area will be the mirror of what happens in the United States.” Her comments followed markets pushing back their forecasts for the rst Fed interest rate cut after CPI data showed consumer prices increased by 3.5% from the previous year, ahead of the 3.4% expected.

Both the pound and the euro have weakened slightly, although this could be due to the strength of the dollar following the release of in ation data and increasing tensions in the Middle East.

Bloomberg also reported this week that Germany may avoid a recession despite economic growth declining by 0.3% in Q4 2023. Eurozone economies continued to show contraction in March, as German and French Composite PMIs both continued to print recently 50. However, if one of its strongest economies can avoid a technical recession, this could take some of the pressure o the ECB to cut rates as aggressively.

The Councilor for Infrastructure, José Antonio Martínez, explained that the rst of these interventions consisted of the resurfacing of Primero de Mayo Street to Miguel Hernández Street. A road that, being one of the main entrances to the urban area of Benejúzar, “has a high density of tra c and an irregular and very

deteriorated surface with cracks and potholes, had already been the cause of some minor incidents for pedestrians.” who travel through it,” Martínez indicated.

The mayor has reported that the installation of sidewalks has also been carried out along the wall of Rambla de Lo Rubes, which until now did not have this infrastructure. Likewise, Martínez has reported that “the implementation of sidewalks has been carried out in other parts of the municipality, such as Maestro Bernabé, Antonio

Sequeros, Francisco Ortuño and Jaime Rosell streets , which were a source of multiple complaints from residents. because they are impassable.”

For his part, the mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases, has indicated that these actions, which have been nanced entirely through municipal funds, “respond to the intention of improving urban circulation and mobility in our municipality, at the same time eradicating the existing architectural barriers and increasing road safety for all citizens.”

Routine eye test leads to diagnosis of Macular hole

Orihuela Costa resident Pearl Whatford went into Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia to change her glasses for more modern ones, but got more than she’d bargained for.

During the routine eye test to determine her prescription, she was shocked to discover that when she closed her left eye, she had very little vision in the right eye. Despite not noticing any deterioration of her vision, or any other symptoms, 80-year-old Mrs Whatford was later diagnosed with a macular hole, a small gap in the centre of the retina in the area responsible for central and ne-detail vision

. Following surgery to repair the hole, her vision is now good and improving every day.

Optometrist Jade Rose was performing the eye test when this issue was revealed. “The patient came into the store, with no concerns about her vision. However, during the testing process, I asked her to close her left eye and she realized that her sight was quite poor in her right eye.”

“I was shocked”, stated Mrs Whatford, “I could not see the letters or anything at all on the test through the right eye, even though I hadn’t noticed any change in my vision.”

Further tests were performed which clearly demonstrated the macular

problems, so Jade urgently referred Mrs Whatford to a specialist. She was seen the same day and received the diagnosis of a macular hole and was treated through surgery to repair the hole and replace the lens due to early stages of cataracts.

Mrs Whatford explains, “The treatment has been amazing from start to nish and I can’t thank the team at Specsavers Ópticas La Zenia and the Torrevieja hospital enough. Following the surgery, my vision is good and getting better every day. I don’t require any ongoing medication and they are not expecting any further deterioration to my vision. I am so grateful to Jade and all the team at Specsavers for their help and advice –they’ve been brilliant!

To anyone who hasn’t had their eyes tested for a while I’d say please make sure you get your eyes tested regularly, whether you need glasses or not – it is so important. The specialists at Specsavers will check the health of your eye, as well as your prescription. In my case it was so important, as if I hadn’t had a diagnosis, it could have a ected my other eye.”

Jade explains, “Macular holes are most common in women aged 60-80. In many cases of macular holes, you may notice blurred or

distorted vision such as straight lines looking wavy and you could have trouble reading small print. At later stages you may see a black patch, or notice an area of your vision is blank. However, in some cases, as we can see with Pearl, the una ected eye compensates for the other eye and patients don’t notice any changes in their vision – that’s why regular eye tests are so important.”

Specsavers Ópticas La Zenia is located in Calle Unamuno 1, Local 2 and comprehensive eye tests, using the latest equipment are free. There are stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. To nd your nearest store and book an eye test, visit www.specsavers.es

Almeria voted the happiest city in Spain

Spain’s rich heritage, diverse climate, tantalizing gastronomy, and breathtaking natural landscapes have solidified its position as one of the world’s premier tourist destinations for decades. However, amid this array of attractions, one place stands out for its remarkable happiness quotient, as revealed by the latest Spain Happy Index report compiled by the tech firm Sonneil.

This comprehensive report takes into account various factors contributing to societal well-being, including housing accessibility, climate conditions, and proximity to essential communication infrastructure.

According to the Sonneil report, the title of Spain’s happiest city belongs to Almeria, nestled in the heart of Andalucía. Renowned for its balmy climate, boasting an average temperature of 17°C and just 29 rainy days per year, Almeria also excels in its proximity to vital amenities like hospitals and airports, earning an impressive score of 92.17 points.

Following Almeria closely are Alicante and Malaga, with the Canary and Balearic Islands not far behind. These locations rank high due to the favorable prospects of homeownership in coastal areas, all sharing the common allure of the sea.

On a regional scale, Andalucía

emerges as a frontrunner in terms of overall quality of life. The Spain Happy Index analysis identifies multiple cities within Andalucía boasting elevated happiness levels, with Almeria province particularly shining. Residents in locales such as Roquetas de Mar, Níjar, Carboneras, and El Ejido report a notable sense of wellbeing.

Nevertheless, the index also sheds light on areas of dissatisfaction, notably within Andalucía itself. Several towns in Almeria province, including Vélez Blanco, María, Lúcar, and Alcóntar, register as less content according to the report’s findings.

The councilor for Family, Mari Carmen Portugal, has expressed that “the workshops are aimed at elderly people in the municipality and their families.” In this sense, she explained that “the objective is to promote the comprehensive

well-being of our elderly, as well as promote and stimulate social and family support.”

From AFA Miguel Hernández , David Chacón , social worker of the association, has been in charge of explaining how these free entry workshops will be developed. Firstly, the Caregiver Workshop will be held on Friday, April 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In this activity, social issues related to the day center or the types of dementias that exist and their phases will be discussed. Likewise, the center’s psychologist, Ignacio Arenas, will give a talk on the personal selfcare of the user, as well as that of

the family member or caregiver.

Meanwhile, the second workshop on Cognitive Stimulation will be held on Thursday, May 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On this day, activities will be proposed that will teach strategies to the family members and users themselves “to provide and slow down the cognitive deterioration that is being lost due to the age factor,” says Chacón.

To register for these workshops you can go to the 2nd oor of the PROP in Orihuela, contact by phone 966 07 61 62 or by sending an email to familia@orihuela.es .

ASAJA Alicante defends Mediterranean agriculture in Brussels

ASAJA Alicante was in Brussels last week to attend a series of meetings organized by the Generalitat Valenciana to defend the agriculture of the Valencian Community and make its needs known to Europe.

Throughout this trip, the Valencian delegation held di erent meetings with representatives of the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and the Commission. Likewise, together with the rest of the agricultural organizations of the Valencian Community, it has participated in the event “Cultivating the future: challenges and solutions for a European regional agriculture”, where an agreed position document has been presented, which has the full support of the Generalitat.

For ASAJA Alicante , the great challenge of the next European mandate is to improve the income of farmers,” says its technical secretary, Ramón Espinosa, who has attended together with Roque Bru, from the association’s board of directors and also president of Riegos de Levante. .

In the province of Alicante, there are 15 crops that represent 90% of our agricultural income and our main activity is fruits and vegetables, precisely the foods that make up the shopping basket. “We understand that in Brussels they are not fully represented since there is constant talk about continental agriculture, but Mediterranean agriculture, the

great pantry, the orchard of Europe, we feel is the great forgotten part of European policies,” says ASAJA Alicante.

Indeed, we are facing a situation of structural crisis in recent years, with progressive declines in agricultural income, zero growth, progressive abandonment of useful agricultural land and the lack of generational change. The basis of all these problems is the lack of pro tability of agricultural operations and production, both agricultural and livestock. At ASAJA Alicante we always say that there are three main problems that penalize us: one is the problem of water, another is low agricultural prices combined with high production costs and the third problem is precisely Brussels. “It is unfortunate, but it is so, because it is an institution that in theory is established to give us solutions and help us improve agricultural income and, however, it is perceived by farmers and ranchers as an obstacle.”

Therefore, the great challenge for the coming years is to improve farmers’ income, gain competitiveness and pro tability. In this regard, we have had the opportunity to present to the European Parliament some measures that we propose:

Measures proposed by ASAJA Alicante

1. A Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that is more market-oriented,

who has to reward production is the market, which addresses regulations where it is more transparent and thus avoids unfair practices.

2. Establish a Food Chain Law in Europe, with a clause that expressly establishes that it cannot be sold below production costs.

3. Sustainable agriculture requires respect for the environment, society and the economy, the problem is that the policies that are being carried out make this last vertex the great forgotten one. There is a clear environmental supremacy over primary production, which represents an excessive extra cost for farmers that is di cult to apply in their dayto-day activities. Therefore, we ask for a balance, and that environmental protection is not at odds with the pro tability of the agricultural sector.

4. Restrict trade agreements with third countries, especially with those that compete directly with us, as well as modify existing ones and incorporate mirror clauses. Farmers should note that the principle of community preference is carried out.

5. Reduce certain production costs by reducing bureaucracy through a radical change in the CAP, elimination of the digital agricultural exploitation notebook (CUE) and modi cation in regulations on active materials that slow down and prevent the application of phytosanitary products that end up being expensive and

they don’t work.

6. Regarding pests, we ask for a homogeneous surveillance plan at ports of entry. Not only do they give us unfair competition, but they also bring us pests, some very harmful to Alicante such as Xylella and cotonet, which have caused disastrous damage in our province, putting our farms at risk and driving abandonment.

7. Support measures incorporated into a strategic plan to incorporate young people.

Finally, ASAJA Alicante positively values this initiative launched by the Consell and hopes that these meetings will be more frequent in order to be able to bring our requirements closer to those who make the decisions in Brussels. Likewise, it encourages the Consell to lead an agrarian lobby in the Valencian Community in the European Union that considers our primary sector as essential for the whole of European society.

VISIT THE AMAZING HOUSE OF SHELLS IN ROJALES

This unique and totally fascinating place will dazzle you with the 700,000 shells that adorn its walls. Located in the pretty village of Rojales next to the famous Rodeo Caves, the house is full of small details that make its charm so special. For almost 20 years, the owner Manuel collected various types of shells during his walks along the beaches of the Costa Blanca, placing them on the facade of his house, in addition to making sculptures and all kinds

of decorative artefacts to decorate the home. Currently, the house belongs to his son, José Manuel, who has kindly opened his doors to the public so that everyone can appreciate and enjoy this extravagant art. Opening times are 10am to 3pm every day, and entrance is 5€ per person. Parking can be found along Carrer Vilatona, 03170 Rojales, Alicante.

After your visit to the house of shells, we highly recommend

taking a stroll around the Cuevas del Rodeo, situated just round the corner. They are a traditional complex of houses which were excavated in the rock between the 18th and 20th centuries. Today, they are used as beautiful cave workshops for local artists and craftsmen.

New Rock Choir, Let´s Rock!

Quesada’s new rock choir, Let’s Rock, held its rst concert at Silverstone’s Bar and Restaurant in Montebello last month.

Originally the event was planned for a small group of family and friends, but word obviously spread and over 75 people came along creating a lively and supportive atmosphere.

With a fantastic programme of 13 rock and pop songs from the 60s to the 80s, Let’s Rock delighted the audience with great harmonies and enthusiasm. Classics included numbers by Queen, Rainbow, The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Let’s Rock’s Musical

Director, Sarah Bundy was keen to start her own rock choir having previously been a member of several singing groups and choirs in Spain. Since November 2023, Sarah has gathered a group of 30 talented singers to help her achieve her aim of forming a rock choir with a di erence.

Let’s Rock now looks forward to building upon its early success. If any fundraisers are looking for free performers to help raise money for local charities, Let’s Rock would love to hear from you. Contact via (kateconnor4414@ aol.com)

Meetings at Dilly’s Bar, Av. Castuera, 3, 03184 El Chaparral, Alicante.

Group meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. The Next meeting is on Wednesday 8th May 2024. You are welcome to attend.

“l am in a rural area where there are no internet providers. What can I do to get online”?

There are a few options. If you have a good mobile telephone signal

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 320 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.

in your property you could use your telephone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It could be expensive if you need unlimited internet access. You may also be able to obtain a portable pocket hotspot dongle that creates WiFi access using a SIM card for data only. Again if you use a lot of data it could be expensive.

Satellite internet is also available. For instance, ‘Starlink’ provide you with a dish, stand, cabling, and router. You just plug it in, point it to the sky and you’re connected. Connection to the satellite is automatic as it is self-seeking. It’s not cheap, costing around €450 for the equipment and €49 per month but it provides good internet download speeds.

“I need access to the same contacts and calendar on several devices. What do I need to do”?

The best place for your contacts is with Google Contacts

If you login to your Google account on all your devices (phones, tablet and computer) and you have your contacts saved to Google they will be available on all devices.

Even if you used some other computer your contacts are available once you login to your Google account.

“How do I prevent my bank account from being hacked”?

Calls? Be on the alert. Banks will never ask you to make or sign a transaction that you wouldn’t want to initiate. Neither will they call you conveying a sense of urgency or asking you for personal codes, passwords, etc.

• Only download applications from your store. If you receive an SMS inviting you to download an application, ignore it. The only reliable source for downloading apps is your App Store or Play Store

Beware of SMS that contains links. Although the issuer of the message may appear to be trustworthy, look closely at the URL and don’t click or provide sensitive information on the destination page.

Keep your data under lock and key. Don’t divulge passwords, keys, codes or personal or nancial data such as your card details.

• If you are unsure about the security of your accounts, contact your bank.

Military meeting success

The band of civilian’s, Ex-RAF, Ex-Army, Ex- Merchant Navy, ExMariner’s and of course Ex-Royal Navy and their brothers in armsin-arms Ex-Royal Marines, all collectively known as Shipmates (S/M’s) of the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) enjoyed another fun packed meeting which took place at the Lakeview Bar & Restaurant, in Quesada.

Some 50% of the total 120 members were in attendance to enjoy the banter and frivolity along with some of the formalities were able to congratulate S/M’s Joan Ward and Rick Ward with a humungous round of applause when they each had their photos taken with the RNATB Chairman while receiving their individual Certi cates for 15 years’ service as a member of the RNATB.

The S/M’s had voted in a new Branch Social Secretary, S/M Lenny Manning at the recent AGM and he

also received an enormous round of applause when he had his photo taken receiving his Social Secretary Badge from the RNATB Chairman.

The recently appointed Ra e Assistant, S/M Kim Heming eld had a colossal round of applause when she had her photo taken receiving her Badge from the RNATB Chairman.

The Branch Schoolie, S/M Graham Shelton also received his Badge with a joint role of Schoolie and Assistant Rum Bosun with a well deserved and received rapturous round of applause, while also having his photo taken with the RNATB Chairman.

The S/M’s were especially enthralled to acknowledge with an elated round of applause when the two new members (S/M’s) Ken Nobes and Amanda Clancy each had their photos taken receiving their Membership Booklet, Card and Badge from the RNATB Chairman. S/M Tony Jenkins gave an amusing synopsis of his time in the mob (RN).

This month’s toast at the routine Tot Time, which is where the Branch provides a ‘tipple’ to the S/M’s as in the traditional way the RN used to do ‘in days gone by’ and called ‘upspirits’; was as usual, predictably well received and enabled the S/M’s to toast St Georges Day and all the S/M’s with a birthday over the next month.

The Branch Schoolie, S/M Graham Shelton, once again rose to the challenge of entertainingly further educated the members of the branch with more of RN Vernacular, commonly known as ‘Jack Speak’ which this month was on watches and bell’s, which in civilian terms means working shift patterns and knowing what time it is.

The nale was once again the enormously exciting Ra e, which always send shipmates home in high spirits and enthusiasm for the next social event.

Torrevieja u3a year off to a good start

The latest Torrevieja U3A Walking/Hiking Group adventure took them to the mountains of Elche via the Aspe waterfalls. The group walked up the hill past the magnificent waterfall and along the boardwalk before heading off to see the sculptures carved in the rock. El Cau de Elche is an open air museum carved in the rock by Mariano Ros over many years. A 13k walk over a few hours with a picnic stop at the carvings before setting off down hill back to the start.

The ramblers group met at Restaurante Asador Casa Paco in Rojales and then took on a 13k ramble. The route was half tarmac and half gravel and dirt paths. They started walking from along the roads down towards the Rio Seguro. Then along the river towards the sea. We almost

reached the sea on the opposite bank to Guardamar but then followed the irrigation ditches along the quiet road back to the starting point at the restaurant. 30 association members took part on a warm but overcast morning.

The first get together of the new Canasta Group was held at the lovely La Laguna Hotel in Quesada. 8 members attended including Barbra, the group leader. Set up as two tables of four with, thankfully, an experienced Canasta player on each table. Barbra was very organised and had printed out several copies of the rules and quite different scoring system. There was a lot of laughter and nearly as much guessing by the ‘newbies’ and everyone had a very enjoyable couple of hours.

The first meeting of the new

Easy Jive and dance group took place at their new venue, the CMO Building in Torrevieja. It’s a great space for dancing with Maxine, the group leader, in the centre of the circle so that everyone could follow the dance moves in easy stages before trying out the steps to music. A very sociable activity, as everyone gets to dance with everyone else, lots of different abilities and all doing very well. It was so well attended, 18 people in total, that Maxine has offered to run the group fortnightly if the May meeting proves as popular.

Fuller details of all the above plus all the other activities that are available to members can be found on torreviejau3a.org. There is also information on how, for a nominal sum, anyone can join the association and take advantage of the many activities

Vueling introduces bizum payment method

Spanish budget airline Vueling has recently integrated Bizum as a payment option for ticket purchases on both its website and mobile app.

Owned by the IAG group, Vueling con rmed that the system has been operational since March. To utilize Bizum for payment, users simply need to have previously activated the service with their bank.

Explaining the process, the airline noted, “Upon accessing the Vueling website, customers select Bizum as their payment method, input their phone number linked to the service, and validate the purchase through their banking application following provided instructions.” Vueling ranks as the second-largest airline at Malaga Airport based on passenger volume.

Carolyn Prowse, a spokesperson for Vueling, stated, “This initiative enriches the customer shopping journey and signi es a progression in our digital transformation by o ering value-added services. As a digitally

native company, our objective is to enhance our customers’ experience continually and adapt to their evolving needs.”

With 26 million users, Bizum is a collaborative endeavor among Spanish banks within their digital innovation initiatives, broadening service o erings to customers. They highlighted, “The collective involvement of participating entities already accounts for over 99% market share, and Bizum continues to expand by integrating new users, use cases, and markets.”

Vueling, marking its 20th anniversary, emphasized a culture of ongoing innovation and noted e-commerce as one of Bizum’s rapidly growing sectors. “In 2023 alone, Bizumers conducted over 30 million online transactions, doubling the total from 2022 and surpassing half of all transactions since the introduction of this use case in 2020. The transaction volume associated with these purchases exceeded 1.65 billion euros,” the airline revealed.

brand and be a reference in the used market,” says the director of Marketing and Business Development at Marcos Automoción.

There are several marketing techniques and tools that are used to enter other markets, improve business and customer experience. An example, those linked to values such as sport where we can see important sponsorships for teams such as Orihuela CF, Levante UD or the Spanish National Team. At Marcos Automoción they are also betting heavily on corporate social responsibility actions. “We are a large company and we feel like helping those who need it,” said Nacho Juan, who remembers cases such as the DANA that Vega Baja suffered in September 2019, “where our general director Francisco Marcos helped in everything.” as much as possible in their land. We also turned to the Ukrainian people when the war broke out and, now, we have been linked to the Levante Foundation for two years, which does incredible social work with the inclusion of people with disabilities through sport.” In this sense, Nacho Juan has revealed that Marcos Automoción is working on creating his own foundation.

The actor and former murder suspect died in the presence of his family at his residence in Las Vegas on Wednesday evening. After enduring months of delays, James Corden has received the green light to demolish his 1960s Oxfordshire residence. The TV host, who returned to the UK with his wife Julia Carey last year, intends to replace the property with a £8 million six-bedroom megamansion featuring a pool and spa. Despite previous objections from the local council and English Heritage, James, who recently wrapped up his US chat show The Late Late Show and returned to London with his family, is now moving forward with his plans. In January, experts cautioned that the vicinity was abundant with Roman and prehistoric artifacts, prompting a need for archaeological exploration to ascertain the existence of any ancient settlements beneath Corden’s Templecombe House. To embark on the ambitious construction project, James must adhere to numerous regulations aimed at protecting local wildlife and trees.

The council previously approved the plans, with the note that a number of conditions would have to be met.

Plans for the application show that the vast project will mean the excavation of 4,977 cubic metres of soil - the equivalent of two Olympicsized swimming pools.

What is microneedling...

Everything you need to know !

In this day and age of social media sharing having a facial is as common as #OOTD (out t of the day) so there is a good chance you have heard of microneedling.

This minimally invasive procedure which involves inserting short sterile needles into the skin that help reduce the appearance of ne lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation and some stretch marks.

This idea may sound scary but in reality there is nothing to be afraid of, here is a breakdown of the treatment... The needles range from 0.5 - 2.5 millimetres which rotate over the skin using a pen like device which creates

tiny wounds in the stratum corneum (the most top layer of skin) to reach the epidermis and the dermis . These tiny controlled injuries are used to promote new collagen formation which in turn helps skin remain tighter and rmer as we age.

Beni ts of microneedling

• improves skin texture

• reduce ne lines & wrinkles

• minimise pores

• improves hydration levels in the skin

• improves pigmentation marks.

After the treatment you will experience some redness and tenderness (feels like a slight sunburn) for the rst few hours but this goes

away on its own. Results are seen over the next 4-6 weeks as the skin needs time to turnover.

Microneedling is not a one o treatment usually a course of 3 procedures is recommended 4 weeks apart and here at Indiana’s hair & lash boutique I often use it with a combination of other technologies to get the best possible results.

Does microneedling hurt?

Many clients nd microneedling feels like a buzzing over their skin feeling more sensitive over less eshy areas ie forehead, cheekbones. Most leave feeling like they have had the best facial ever. Clients may experience red skin and slight swelling but by

evening you will be back to normal or slightly pink with minimal downtime.

This treatment is a favourite among celebrities, why not book your

consultation at Indiana’s Hair & Lash Boutique today.

criticise everything I do.

I think it is understandable that you feel the way you do. Your longer letter to me goes into more detail. Don’t beat yourself up for not leaving your husband sooner. No one should be subjected to mental abuse, and being kept a prisoner in their own home. You are now free of his treatment of you. Your inlaws don’t need to know how you really feel; you can just say that you need to get used to living a different life now without your husband. They don’t need to be privy to what you do either; you can keep things to yourself if you wish.

Few people knew that my husband was a very cruel, tyrant of a man and I never told his family the extent of it. I tried to tell them once but they didn’t believe me so I stopped bothering. When he died suddenly of a heart attack three months ago, I had to be honest and tell someone that I am not sad or grieving at all; so I told the priest at our church. I am a lapsed Catholic, and my husband did not want a church funeral. The priest was kind and said I hadn’t anything to feel bad about. Far from being bereaved I feel relief and freedom more than anything else. I am no longer suffering daily mental abuse. His family have accused me of being uncaring because I bought new clothes and got my hair coloured. I reminded them that he was difficult to live with, and wouldn’t let me do things like this. My father is the only one who knew how my husband treated me, but he died years ago. On his deathbed he asked me to leave my husband. I didn’t, but wished I had. Now I suppose I can do what I want, but my in-laws are nosey and WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. People still do not put on their seatbelt whilst travelling

During the seven days that the campaign has lasted, more than 400,000 vehicles have been checked and 5,841 people have been detected traveling without any safety device.

76% of the people who were not wearing a seat belt or CRS did so on conventional roads, the most dangerous and where going o the road is the most frequent accident.

317 minors with a height equal to or less than 135 cm were traveling without the appropriate CRS or using it incorrectly.

Seat belts and child restraint systems are among the most e ective measures to protect occupants of motor vehicles. So far this year, of the 130 deaths for whom it is known whether or not they were using a safety device, 40 of them were not wearing it at the time of the accident (33%). This fact is re ected in the latest surveillance campaign on the use of seat belts and CRS that the General Directorate of Tra c carried out between March 11 and 17.

In these seven days, a total of 416,926 vehicles have been checked, including passenger cars, taxis, goods vehicles and buses, 4% more than the vehicles checked in the previous campaign and to which 5,841 complaints have been made to drivers and passengers for not doing so. use of the regulatory retention system.

It is important to highlight that 76% of all complaints were led on conventional roads, a worrying fact if we take into account that these roads continue to be the most dangerous as they are where the greatest number of fatalities are recorded and where it is advisable, even more, to take extreme measures. the precautions.

Speci cally, 5,524 adults have been sanctioned for not using a seat belt, a gure that has increased slightly compared to the previous edition of this campaign and which means that 3,043 drivers, 1,270 front seat passengers and 1,211 of the rear passengers were not properly protected in their vehicles in case they had su ered a tra c accident.

It has been proven that the seat belt, in addition to reducing the risk of dying in a tra c accident by 50%, protects against being thrown out of the passenger compartment, as well as impacting the windshield. In urban areas, the possibility of

being seriously injured or killed is 5 times less if you wear a seat belt.

Regarding child restraint systems, mandatory for minors with a height equal to or less than 135 cm, the agents detected 317 who were traveling without using this safety device or doing so incorrectly, 245 in the seats rear and 72 in the front.

For children, the use of child restraint systems is even more important as data shows that nine out of ten serious or fatal

child injuries would have been prevented if mandatory restraint systems had been used. Furthermore, in the event of a tra c accident, injuries are reduced by up to 75% with proper use of them.

To try to avoid this type of behavior, the Tra c and Road Safety Law raised the points lost for not using the appropriate child restraint system or not doing it in the correct way to 4 in 2022, in the same way as was done with the not using a seat belt.

Chelsea’s financial

woes laid bare

Chelsea’s nancial woes have been starkly revealed, with the club recording the most signi cant operating loss in Premier League history last season. Their staggering operating de cit amounted to £249 million, nearly £100 million higher than their closest competitor, Leicester City, who reported a £152 million loss.

Furthermore, Chelsea boasted the most valuable squad, valued at £1.117 billion, and the secondhighest wage bill in the league at £404 million, trailing only behind Manchester City. In an e ort to comply with the Premier League’s pro t and sustainability regulations, Chelsea sold a hotel to BlueCo, the consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake who acquired the club in May 2022, for £76.3 million.

Despite hefty expenditures of £745 million on player acquisitions, Chelsea only managed to recoup £203 million through player sales. These nancial challenges underscore the club’s precarious nancial position amidst growing scrutiny and pressure to balance their books.

Tiger Woods’ left-handed shot at The Masters violates golf rules

On the opening day of The Masters, Tiger Woods showcased a strong start, securing a birdie on the rst hole despite his 48 years of age. However, his momentum took a hit on the second hole when he faced a challenging scenario next to a tree. Unable to execute his usual shot, Woods opted for a left-handed

stance with his club inverted. Remarkably, he managed to maneuver the ball back onto the fairway, ultimately saving par for the hole. Despite encountering hurdles, Woods remained steady through 16 holes, concluding the day at one-over-par (+1).

Formula 1 calendar for 2025 unveiled

The Formula 1 calendar for the 2025 season has been unveiled, featuring a notable emphasis on North America with ve races, including three in the United States. This landmark season marks the 75th anniversary of competition in the pinnacle of motorsport worldwide, encompassing a total of 24 Grands Prix.

Commencing on March 14-16 in Australia, the season’s nale will culminate with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 5-7, 2025. Spanning four continents, the calendar excludes only Africa. Notable venues on the F1 calendar include Miami, Austin, and Las

Vegas in the United States, along with Canada’s Montreal and Mexico City.

Miami will host the season’s sixth race from May 2 to 4, followed by the Austin Grand Prix on October 17 to 19, and concluding with the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 20 to 22. The Montreal Grand Prix at the Gilles Villeneuve Street circuit will take place from June 13 to 15, while the Mexico City Grand Prix is scheduled for October 24 to 26.

A traditional summer break will occur in August, halting the season for three weeks between the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix.

Transitioning to the second day, Woods maintained his composure and consistency. Though he brie y reclaimed an even score with an early birdie, his position uctuated, resulting in him concluding the day once again at oneover-par through two rounds.

On Tuesday the 9th of April we made the second visit of the year to the mighty Embalse De Argos in the Murcia region. We were as usual having two consecutive days shing with all of us dotted around the match point. This consists of a steep wooded penninsular and can hold around 20 anglers at a push. One side of this area is South facing so you get a sunny side and a cold side. Upon our arrival the temperature was around 10 degrees but a biting chilly wind made it feel much cooler especially on the cold side.

Winner from the end peg on the warm side was Richard Smith. Richard shed a cage feeder with maggots and clocked up a magni cent early season weight of 51kg.

In second place was myself Ian Brown from peg 5 on the sunny side with

20.02kg. I shed the method feeder at about 50m with maggots or wafter.

In third place was Bob Robinson from peg 3. Bob shed the feeder or method with corn and caught late on to weigh 17.17kg.

The cold side did not shed very well and Barry Smith took the honours on this side with a top weight of 10.92kg. We stayed the night with ten of us stopping at a nearby country house in Ceghin with scenes reminiscent of The Waltons. Rods N Reels.

The following day we return to do battle this time with 15 anglers , one more than the previous day. The wind had dropped but this had resulted in an outside temperature of 4 degrees and at the draw no one wanted to draw the cold side.

Winner on the day was once again Richard Smith. This time he was drawn on the cold side and used similar feeder tactics with maggots to weigh 23.80kg.

In second place was Graham Patterson from peg 4 on the sunny side. Graham shed the cage feeder with corn and caught carp steady all day and weighed 22.42kg. He must have thought it was his birthday but that was the day after.

In third place from the cold side was the Burnley bullet, Barry Smith. Barry shed the slow sinker or feeder again with maggots for 19.50kg. The other section winner was Alan Smith who weighed 14.28kg from peg 5.

Despite the weather this was once again a great trip and we will do it all again next month.
