Covid passport may be abolished in March

President of the Valencian Community Ximo Puig revealed that due to the current rate of decline in coronavirus infections that the obligation to present a covid passport may be abolished from March 1st.

Meanwhile, the mask will continue to be mandatory indoors - outdoors it will be required only at crowded events when the safety distance between people cannot be guaranteed. in terms of the vaccination certificate

or ‘covid passport’ in the Valencian Community, this document must be shown until Monday February 28 for access to bars, restaurants, nightclubs and cinemas, any establishment that serves food, plus venues such

as swimming pools as well as health centres and hospitals. From March 1st and beyond, it will no longer be necessary to present a covid pass, according to Ximo Puig’s remarks at the weekend. the epidemiological situation is slowly improving with more than twice as many discharges as infections, which is also reflected in the progressive decrease in the number admitted to hospitals. Puig said that if the health situation “continues to go as it is right now”, with a big decline in infections and, more importantly, in hospitalizations and iCu occupation, the hope is that more restrictions can be eased. asked about the forthcoming Fallas festival, he pointed out that “there will be some restrictions”, such as the mandatory use of masks. Puig also praised the citizens of the

Valencian Community, saying that they have displayed “extraordinary” behaviour. he also said that he wants to “move towards normality” although without forgetting that the virus is still present, saying: “We still have the pandemic.” Meanwhile, news emerged on thursday that the falsification of the vaccination certificate or covid passport would carry a prison sentence of between 6 months and 3 years and that the spanish courts would consider the person who commissions the false covid pass as responsible for the crime. the vaccination certificate is still necessary in spain to access establishments in andalucía (until today, tuesday 15th February), aragon, the Canary islands, the Valencian Community (until tuesday March 1st), Galicia, La Rioja, Murcia, Ceuta and Melilla.

122 minors under police protection in Alicante province 122 young women are living under protection and surveillance by security forces in the alicante province, data released this week revealed. the women, all under the age of 18, live in fear of suffering an episode of genderbased violence by their partners or expartners. according to figures from the VioGén system (the Comprehensive Monitoring system for Gender Violence Cases, run by the secretary of state for security of the Ministry of the interior), 51 of these cases are marked as currently active. all 122 of the young women and teens have been registered in the VioGén system because they have already suffered an episode of abuse despite their young age. some of the women have suffered physical abuse while others were controlled or

abused psychologically. Experts have detected an upward trend in gender violence cases among adolescents and after the recent murder of a 17 year old girl by her 19 year old ex boyfriend in totana (Murcia), the spotlight is on the issue once more. the charity save the Children has warned about gender violence among teens in its latest report. their data says that 25% of adolescents admit to having suffered psychological or control abuse. according to data from “the situation of violence against women in adolescence in spain”, by the Government delegation against Gender Violence, 11.1% of adolescent girls have felt pressured into sexual situations in which they did not want to participate. Experts believe that among the

possible causes of this worrying upward trend in gender violence among teens is the lack understanding among teens of what a “romantic” relationship is. Psychologist Álvaro Beltrán explained that there is a “lack of comprehensive sexual and emotional education” but that there are other issues that can influence relationships between adolescents, such as access to “pornography in which women are shown as objects.” save the Children estimates that 71.5% of boys and 28.8% of girls admitted visiting pages with sexual content. Furthermore, this sort of viewing begins earlier than ever, at an average age of 12, due to the “greater access” that children and teens have nowadays, according to the psychologist.

Tragic triple murder in Elche a 15 year old boy has been remanded in custody after a triple murder in Elche. the teen is accused of killing his parents and 10 year old brother with a hunting firearm. the tragic events took place last tuesday when, after an argument over the young man’s poor academic performance, he is alleged to have shot his mother and brother with shotgun and then hid their bodies in a shed. the alleged murderer

then waited several hours for his father to return from work, shot him with the same weapon and hid the body along with those of the other two victims. the youngster was arrested on Friday and is believed to have confessed to his aunt, but according to reports did not express any remorse. homicide detectives are investigating the events leading up to the murder as the teenager remains in custody. the

initial hypothesis suggests that there was an argument over the boy’s poor grades, and as punishment his parents decided to remove his games console and internet access. a report by news outlet aBC claims the teen first shot his mother, then his brother as he tried to flee. Relatives, concerned about the lack of contact from the family, went to the house on Friday evening when the teenager is

believed to have confessed to his aunt, his mother’s sister. the suspect was described by neighbours and classmates as a shy boy with no history of violence. When he hadn’t been to school for three days, his classmates contacted him and he claimed he was in isolation after contracting Covid-19. Reports also indicated he answered whatsapps that had been sent to his mother’s phone.

Short Story contest

san Fulgencio town hall is inviting entries, in spanish, for its 2022 literary competition. this year will be the 37th edition of san Fulgencio’s national short story competition, with works being accepted until 7 March. the competition has a top prize of 1,000 euro for the winning story and 600 euro for the runners-up prize. as reported by the Councillor for Culture, ana Maria Villena, “we will present the prize to the winning authors in a ceremony that will take place on 23 april, World Book day, in the Cardenal Belluga theatre in san Fulgencio”. the works must be sent to san Fulgencio town hall in person or by post along with a completed entry form, which can be found online in the municipal electronic office. First san Fulgencio Book Fair as part of the celebrations for World Book day, the town’s department of Culture is preparing what will be san Fulgencio’s first ever Book Fair.

the fair will take place on 24 april, and Councillor Villena revealed, “We want to have the participation of local writers to publicise their books and their work.” Councillor Villena has called for the participation “of all authors who live in or are natives of the town, to have a space at this fair in which to publicise their works”. those interested should contact the department of Culture on 966794201, or by email avillena@aytosanfulgencio.es. in addition, and as a complementary activity, the department will also organise a local literary competition in which the town’s schools will participate. With these initiatives, the town hall “hopes to commemorate Book day in style, with the aim of promoting the love of reading and writing among the population, and make san Fulgencio a cultural reference in the Vega Baja,” said the Councillor.

this is a super story of Mufi, the 12 year old constant companion of Esperanza, a lovely spanish lady of 82 years young. he was a window cat who never went out – just loved to sit and watch. he disappeared from home on 22nd december with the whole family and friends desperately trying to find him. he was handed into torrevieja Municipal albergue on 8th February where, luckily for Mufi, a few keen eyed volunteers who had been following Mufi’s story on Facebook recognised him. the family came to the shelter and found that indeed this was their Mufi. he is now home with his happy mum who said “Mufi is a miracle. i thought he was dead after being lost so long.” a lovely happy ending! Briton arrested for chainsaw attack Guardia Civil have detained a British man in Rojales for attacking another man with a chainsaw. Reports indicate a 42 year old Briton was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a very serious assault, with additional charges levied due to threats made against the victim and another man. Police said the victim – a 20 year old spanish man – lost part of his nose and required 15 stitches due to the attack which took place on February 3rd. according to reports, two men were in a car driving through the industrial estate in san isidro. Police said the occupants observed that another car was following them and crossed into the middle of the road, forcing the car behind to stop. From the car behind, the alleged perpetrator got out and threatened to kill both men, brandishing a gun. he is then alleged to have taken an electric chainsaw from the boot of his car and thrust it through the passenger window of the car, causing damage to the car and after a struggle, partially cutting off the victim’s nose. officers from the dolores

barracks of the Guardia Civil were actually on patrol in the industrial estate just after the alleged attack took place. noticing a large group of people gathered at the door to a business, they went to investigate and it was then that the victim informed police about what had happened. officers arranged medical assistance and took a statement. the alleged aggressor, who police said had been the victim of several robberies at his business on the industrial estate, is believed to have seen

the vehicle in which the victims were ‘loitering’ around the area of his premises and suspicions raised, decided to act. Police said that after carrying out several efforts to locate the suspect, as he had several addresses in different towns, officers were able to locate him at a friend’s house in Rojales. the man declared his part in the events to the officers and cooperated at all times to provide the weapons used in the attack, a replica handgun and a chainsaw, which were seized by police.

Locals deem new parking bays dangerous the Costa Blanca People has been contacted by several people concerned about the addition of new disabled parking bays opposite the entrance to the overseas supermarket (locally known as iceland) car park at Lomas de Cabo Roig. the three blue bays have been place in what used to be one of the two lanes of traffic and are very close to the bend of the road. this lane was generally used by those vehicles not wishing to access the supermarket and many still take the corner in this lane, not being aware of the changes to the road layout. one reader, Mr Rose, was caught out by the new parking bays and low lying sun, which saw him clip the curb added to mark the bays and burst his tire. he said: “i live locally and drive that stretch of road fairly often. it was a bright day and the lowlying sun obscured my view. i didn’t know the parking bays had been added and there were no warning signs. i must have just clipped the curb, but my tire popped and i had to call out the grua.” Mr Rose waited with a coffee on the terrace of a bar opposite and there were another two incidents or near misses in the

short space of time he was there. he said: “it’s only a matter of time before there is a serious accident or someone gets hurt. the people at the bar told me it was regular occurrence.” We spoke to an employee of one of the bars opposite, who confirmed there had been a number of incidents since the parking bays were added. she said: “the supermarket has its own disabled parking, so these do not make sense. they are close to the corner and

people do not realise until it is too late. We have seen a number of problems they have caused.” Locals are also concerned that the driver’s door opens onto the remaining carriageway. if the driver is disabled or has reduced mobility then this places them in danger. another caller said they had parked in one of the bays whilst getting some lunch, but had to move the car as a number of vehicles came close to hitting it and she felt uncomfortable leaving it there.

at Christmas Lesley Boreham started a fundraiser on Facebook called ‘a bed for Christmas’, for the dogs at Finca la Castellana animal Welfare Centre, her target was to get 50 beds or €1,000. these beds are raised on legs, so the dogs don’t have to lie on a cold, hard floor and means they have warm and comfortable place to lay their heads.

With lots of work and effort Lesley managed to raise €456 towards the cause, purchasing approximately 25 beds for some of the dogs currently living at the rescue centre. however, despite her best efforts, she was disappointed not to have met her original target. Luckily, though her husband Richard, of autolease and autocarga in Benijófar, stepped in and

offered to match the amount already raised to reach the 1000€ needed for the 50 beds. this was generous gesture which the volunteers and the dogs at Finca la Castellana are extremely grateful for. thank you to Lesley and Richard, and to all the people who either, donated towards or bought these fantastic beds for all of the dogs.

Independence for the Coast not achievable antonio Cerdan, President of C.L.a.R.o., has responded to an article published the spanish regional daily newspaper información. the misleading article claimed that C.L.a.R.o. would join a new party and work for the independence of orihuela Costa. however, snr Cerdan explains that C.L.a.R.o. has never promoted independence for orihuela Costa, but has always advocated the basic principles of integration and decentralisation. “in our opinion,” he said, “independence is unachievable because of insurmountable political and legal obstacles including the requirement that the plenary of the orihuela town Council must vote in favour – who can really believe that the oriheula-based political parties would vote to close their gold mine in orihuela Costa?” independence is in conflict with the principle of integration, which is the only possible policy which reflects the reality of the population of orihuela Costa, spanish and non-spanish, multilingual and multicultural and the reality of its place in a dispersed municipality whose capital is unfortunately 30 kilometres away. integration applies not only between the populations living on the coast but must also apply to relations between the coast and the rest of the municipality; we all need to live in harmony. C.L.a.Ro.’s commitment to integration between coast and the rest

of the municipality can be seen in the fact that it contested two of the four elections after creating an alliance with orihuela-based parties. integration, however, must be complemented by decentralisation in order to avoid the powerful, overcentralised tendencies of orihuela city council. “By decentralisation,” snr Cerdan explains, “the party means a series of administrative and economic measures, such as changing the status of the coast, since it is neither a district nor a consolidated urban centre and so suffers the negative consequence of not having its own councillor with a corresponding budget.” a fair share of the municipality’s budget is absolutely essential, a share which reflects what the coast contributes to the income of the municipal government (some 40 percent plus) and which would enable the area to correct the glaring deficiencies from which it suffers in most of the services and infrastructures currently provided by the town council. Votes With regard to the unity of the Coast and next year’s municipal elections, C.L.a.R.o. has, since its inception in 2006, secured the major share of the vote of the coast (more than 40 percent) in the four elections it has contested but without reaching the legal 5 percent threshold of the total vote cast which would ensure one elected councillor.

in order to increase the voting strength of the coast, the party has always tried to bring together the active groups on the coast, as it continues to do today, on condition that it adheres to the same basic principles of integration and decentralisation. independence is an illusion, not an achievable objective for as long ahead as anyone can see. antonio Cerdan concludes: “We wonder if some of those advocating independence, without detailing how it could be achieved, are simply deceiving the people and resorting to tactics to gain electoral support, assuming that a legally registered party for the independence of the coast actually contests the next election in 2023. these tactics do not lead to the unity of the coast, but rather promotes its division.”

Town Hall and University of Alicante present ‘Torrevieja Grand Tour’ For the fourth consecutive year, the architectural faculty of the university of alicante (ua) returns its focus to torrevieja. a collaborative project between the departments of Education and tourism of the City Council and the headquarters of the university of alicante in the town, this year a new intergenerational team of architects, teachers and students will work on a unique plan for opportunities offered by torrevieja and its tourist ‘ecosystem’, in what they have entitled “torrevieja Grand tour”. the programme began last week with a series of conferences, workshops and talks which continue into april and May. the second workshop “Ecolandscapes of tourism” (april 1), will be hosted by deborah López and hadin Charbel. the second instalment will study the current situation of several of the so called toxic landscapes of the municipality and the possibilities for improvement. the last workshop, chaired by the director of naGaMi, Manuel Jiménez, will deal with “Parametric tourism”

Calls for Coastal night ambulance Friday 11th February, was European day of Emergency services, aimed at promoting the existence and proper use of the emergency number 112, unique to the European Community. however, the celebratory day was used by tomás Moreno trancón, spokesman for aVoCa – orihuela Costa neighborhood association in action – to highlight the dangerous shortfall in the night-time ambulance service available in orihuela Costa. the spokesman was keen to thank the emergency personnel for their tireless work and commitment. he said: “Events as unfortunate as the dana of september 2019 or the current pandemic that we are suffering allow us to verify the selflessness, dedication and effectiveness with which the emergency services worked and continue to work, mitigating the effects of these catastrophes. orihuela Costa will soon have its

own Emergency Centre, due to open in a few weeks. its more than 4,000 square meters will bring together, in the same building, emergency specialist services such as the Local Police, Civil Guard, saMu, Fire Brigade, etc. this will allow immediate activation of emergency plans in the event of any catastrophe, as well as attending to the every-day emergencies in the area, quickly and efficiently. however, aVoCa continues to demand that this centre has an advanced Life support unit – saMu ambulance - that provides service 24 hours a day. the current service only provides an ambulance for 12 hours-aday, and therefore, does not guarantee a fast response at night to attend to urgent cases. this is despite the fact that it covers the needs of some 45,000 registered people, a population that skyrockets during the holiday season.

Torrevieja Jazz Fridays torrevieja’s Municipal institute of Culture announced the third edition of the Jazz concert series “Fridays at the Palace”. Between February and June, at the Palacio de la Música audiences will be given a chance to enjoy varied styles and exceptional performers within the fabulous world of Jazz. tickets are free with an invitation to pick up the week of the performance at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center

Minimum wage increase spain’s government has increased the minimum wage after striking a deal with national unions, a move that will affect at least 1.8 million workers. according to figures held by work minister yolanda díaz’s department, the typical profile of an employee who will see their salary rise is a woman aged from 16 to 34, on a temporary job contract, working in the service sector or the food industry. the coalition government of the centre-left socialists and left-wing Podemos had always intended to work towards bringing the minimum wage into a four-figure monthly takehome sum by the beginning of 2022 or 2023 at the latest – and although the increased salary will take a couple of weeks to come into effect, when it does, this will be retroactive. Pay rises will be backdated to 1st January and, as it is likely they will already be included in wage slips at the end of February, these will also include the additional figure for January. in other words, someone who was on the minimum wage of €965 a month before tax – payable in 14 monthly instalments, in line with the dying-out tradition of companies giving a double salary in august and at

Christmas – will, from March onwards, get an additional €35 a month gross in their pay slip, but for February, will receive an extra €70 before tax, to cover the rise for January’s wage packet, which has already been and gone. now, the gross figure is €1,000 a month in 14 payments, or €14,000 a year before tax for a full-time, 40-hour-a-week job. if this is received in 12 payments, a minimum wageearner will now be taking home approximately €1,029 after taxes and other deductions. those who still work for companies which give a double salary twice-yearly will, in a normal month, get €871.50 after tax, but in august and december will receive an additional €945.60 each time

– or, in summer and again at Christmas, will earn €1,817.10. the increased minimum salary automatically means that the minimum threshold for social security (national insurance) contributions, the bulk of which is paid by the employer and only around 6.35 percent by the employee – stopped at source – will also increase, ensuring that nobody’s wage rise will be obliterated by a corresponding hike in their contributions. spain’s government pledged, when it won the november 2019 elections, that by the end of 2023, the minimum wage would be at least 60 percent of the mean average salary in the country – a guideline set by the European union for all its member states.

Why Chorus Financial are different By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner Chorus Financial

Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? as many of you will likely know, Chorus are certainly not spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. Chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from Brits living in spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in spain cared

about. Chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. Regulation isn’t all that strict in spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-quality underlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like siPPs, QRoPs, spanish Compliant Bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for

many years, we’ve won major international awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of Brits in spain. so why are Chorus different? Well, myself and the Chorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of Chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. although we operate under a major European financial services network, aisa international, aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP While there were no inflation data from the uK, the Bank of England was backward in coming forward about the subject. at the end of last week, Governor andrew Bailey put noses out of joint when he urged workers not to ask for inflation-chasing pay rises soon after the bank had doubled borrowing costs. this week, Chief Economist huw Pill made the case for “re-establishing a reputation for measured and purposeful steps in policy”, as opposed to taking the bold steps of “aggressive activism”. Mr Pill’s comments helped send the GBP to the back of the field on Wednesday, but it staged a full recovery the following day. on the week, sterling is an average of 0.5% firmer, losing out only to the usd to the tune of two thirds of a cent. until this Friday morning, the only economic data related to retail sales and house prices. the BRC said sales rebounded by 8.1% in January from a poor Covid-restricted performance 12 months earlier. the halifax and the RiCs both reported continued strong demand for residential property. a raft of output data this morning included gross domestic product, which expanded by a provisional 1% in the fourth quarter and 7.5% in calendar 2021 after contracting by 9.4% in 2020.

EURO inflation in the Eurozone is projected to be around 5.1% in the year to January, close to a record high. however, it is not a homogeneous rate: national inflation rates range from 12% in Lithuania to 2.7% in Portugal, which makes it impossible for the European Central Bank to set a single benchmark interest rate that suits everybody. it must pick a number that does the least damage and the most good. that means weighing the decision towards the biggest countries with the largest economies—Germany, France and italy which together amount to more than 60% of Eurozone gross domestic product. among those, Germany has been traditionally the most vocal about prudent monetary policy, not least because of the folk memory of the hyperinflation that made money essentially worthless in 1923. against that background, the new Bundesbank President Joachim nagel flexed his muscles this week. he told die Zeit newspaper that if inflation were to remain high in March, he would favour normalising (tightening) monetary policy, ending net asset purchases so that interest rates could be raised before the end of the year. ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane will not easily be persuaded, though. he believes “inflation [should] return to its trend without a need for a significant adjustment in monetary policy”.

Thief steals ashes of deceased mother there are often robberies in which the sentimental value of items stolen far outweighs the actual monetary value. the public prosecutor’s office has brought a case to court in which the alleged perpetrator is said to have broken into a parked car in alicante and stolen – among other items – the urn containing the ashes of the mother of the owner of the car. the stolen objects were valued at 175 euros, but the emotional implications have been taken into account by the Public Ministry and for this reason, in addition to the two years in prison, prosecutors demand that the defendant return the ashes to the victim or, if he does not, he has to compensate her with €12,000 euros in damages. the incident occurred last

summer, specifically on July 17. the victim had left her car parked in alicante and to her surprise when she went back a few hours later, she found that someone had forced the boot open and stolen many items from within. among the items was the funeral urn with the ashes of her mother. Police managed to identify and arrest the alleged perpetrator of the robbery, a man who had no criminal record and who is now on trial for the incident. the Prosecutor’s office considers him the perpetrator of a crime of ‘robbery with force’ for which it is demanding a sentence of two years in prison, in addition to the payment of compensation of 175 euros for the objects stolen from the car. however, given the nature of the case, the Public Ministry

has taken into account that the urn is not just another object and that for its owner, it has a special value. the prosecutor has demanded the return of the ashes to the injured party. in the event that the ashes are not forthcoming, he requests compensation of €12,000 for the ‘moral damage’ caused. although it may seem unusual, there have been other thefts of funerary urns in spain – often by accident when the perpetrators believed the urn was something else or didn’t realise what it was. on more than one occasion, urns have turned up in lost property offices across the province. in orihuela Costa, or in Benidorm, urns have been lost by people who were going to scatter the remains of their loved ones at sea.

Murdered couple found buried in Elche ravine the bodies of a man and a woman have been found buried in a ravine in Elche. they were handcuffed and had duct tape over their mouth and it is thought the bodies had been there for around three years. the shallow gave was located in a rural area on the outskirts of the city, in the Barranco del Grifo and was discovered by a dg walker. the local resident stumbled upon a human skull and saw more bones nearby. they raised the alarm and police arrived quickly to the scene. Police say there is no doubt that the pair was murdered and they also believed the man was badly beaten or even tortured. their identities are still not known and officers are working on the assumption that the deaths were related to criminal gang activity, maybe the settling of a debt or score. according to the first examination of the bodies carried out by the coroner at the site, the woman has an approximate height of 1.60 meters and the man of around 1.80, possibly less than 40 years old. the two were buried on top of each other, with the woman underneath. Both had their hands secured with two sets of handcuffs, although the woman was handcuffed in front, while the man’s hands were fastened behind his back. the two had their eyes and mouth covered with duct tape and, in addition, the man has signs of fractures in the jaw

and other facial bones, so it is obvious that he was tortured, either to obtain some kind of information or as an act of revenge. Coroners will now need to conduct a full study of both bodies to detect all possible signs of torture and the cause of both deaths. it is assumed that the female died of asphyxiation, as the duct tape completely covered her nose and mouth. in addition, dna samples will be extracted from both bodies to try to identify them by their genetic profiles. officers are hoping that they will get lucky and the victims details will have been entered into the police database of biological data, something that would only happen if they had been arrested previously. it will be added into the database of missing persons

and human remains (PdyRh), to see if there is any match with the dna of anyone whose disappearance has been reported. Missing person reports are already being checked, not only in the area closest to Elche and in the rest of the province of alicante, but also in Valencia, Murcia and albacete, from where it will be extended to the rest of the country if required. the police also have some personal belongings for at least one of the two victims that will help in their identification. one of the suspicions, on a finding in the grave, is that the victims could be foreigners, which could hinder the identification, unless they were residents in spain or people in tourist transit whose families would have missed them and reported their disappearance.

Spanish scientists’ cancer breakthrough scientists in spain may have found the key to early detection of a type of cancer which is rarely diagnosed until it is too late. Pancreatic cancer is one of a number of strains known as a ‘silent killer’, since it is largely without symptoms until it is at a very advanced stage – typically stage four, which is incurable, meaning treatment will, at best, be about prolonging life by a few months or years, but is often too advanced for anything other than palliative care. now, though, a threeyear research project by Barcelona’s hospital del Mar and the Barcelona BioMedical Research institute (iiBB), part of spain’s national Research Council (CsiC), has identified a tumour marker present in 90 percent of pancreatic cancer cases. the third cause of cancer death in developed countries, with 8,700 cases diagnosed in spain in 2021, the vast majority are known as ‘pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma’, explains dr Pilar navarro, team coordinator. until now, blood tests have been carried out to detect the tumour marker Ca19-9, but its presence does not necessarily mean cancer – it also shows up in the case of pancreatitis, a health condition which is unpleasant, but treatable. the latest discovery, though, is a protein called aXL tirosine-

Quinase, which shows up on a blood test in pancreatic cancer, from the earliest stage, but is not present with pancreatitis or any other illnesses affecting the organ. also, says senior researcher dr Pablo García de Frutos, the aXL protein is not present in all types of cancer, meaning it is easier to narrow its presence down to specific strains of the disease. samples from 200 patients with chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer were used – from 59 patients at the hospital del Mar, and later, from 142 being treated at Barcelona’s hospital Clínic. a third set of samples came from those with pancreatic cancer who have a family history of the disease, and a fourth from mice. Within a year, dr navarro says, research will have advanced enough that the aXL marker could be used in clinical settings – through blood tests to detect its presence. doing so would come at ‘very little cost’ to the health service, compared with other forms of diagnosing cancer, she explains, as it would simply be another value to add to those being tested for in a routine blood sample. it is hoped testing for the aXL protein will become part of routine blood tests, which local GP practices like to perform at least once a year on the entire population, even healthy ones.

Coffee could be key to longevity The morning cup of coffee is a sacred ritual for many of us, and the thought of functioning without it can be truly mortifying. However, that morning cuppa has just had its status elevated and become even more important. According to a new study, scientists now believe that drinking three cups of ground coffee a day could help you live longer. A decade-long survey of more than half a million Britons by Biobank found those who consumed three cups a day were 12 percent less likely to die than non-drinkers. They were also 17 percent less likely to die of heart disease and 21 percent less likely to die of a stroke, the study found. However, the health benefits did not apply for instant coffee drinkers or for those who drink more than three cups a day. So investing in a decent coffee maker and only drinking freshly ground coffee is key, as is hitting the caffeine in moderation. The new study was conducted by a team of academics at Semmelweis University in Hungary and Queen Mary University of London. Dr

Steffan Petersen, from Queen Mary’s, said the results showed that coffee consumption in moderate amounts “is not cardiovascularly harmful and may even be beneficial”. He added: “To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest volume of research to date focusing on the cardiovascular effects of coffee consumption.” Over a fifth (22 percent) of participants were non-coffee drinkers while 58 percent drank up to three cups a day. The remaining fifth (20 percent) consumed at least three cups of the beverage or more each day. A quarter of the group drank instant coffee, which contains more caffeine and antioxidants as well as acrylamide – a substance linked with increased

risk of cancer. Volunteers were tracked for 11 years and had an average age of 56 years. None of the participants had heart disease at the beginning of the study. Dr Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, a co-author of the study from Queen Mary University of London, said: “Most of the participants drank either ground or instant coffee. “Ground coffee in moderate amounts was associated with lower mortality risk - but this benefit was not found amongst the regular instant coffee drinkers. “The reason behind this may relate to the different production process of the ground and instant forms as they contain different additives.”

Mayor of Orihuela meets with Orihuela Costa groups The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, held a meeting this morning with representatives of different associations and groups in Orihuela Costa, in order to discuss the initiatives to be included in the 2022 Municipal Budgets. The Mayor was accompanied by the Councillors for Emergencies and Health, Víctor Valverde, and José Galiano, respectively to ensure he had the latest information to share with the community before its presented to the council.

He began by saying how much he positively valued this meeting and thanked all those present for their interest and commitment. He was pleased by the ‘good reception that the government’s gesture has had among the representatives of the associations and groups for the coast welcomed the effort the teams has gone to in order to personally share information and discuss the local projects to be included in the budget. Among the proposals put forward at the meeting were

the Civic Centre for the coast, a library, different improvement projects for parks and roads, plans the sewage treatment plant, improvement of the maintenance contract for parks and gardens, accessibility works and road resurfacing among others. The Mayor said he is confident that “in the coming weeks we will be able to finalise the Municipal Budget and be able to offer the municipality of Orihuela the projects it needs to continue improving and advancing”.

A quiz with a difference The Huntington’s Disease Association has hosted its long awaited ‘Quiz with a Difference’ at Imanyo’s Bar in Daya Nueva, raising 195 euros for the charity. It had been planned last year, however, because of the pandemic was cancelled twice. The Question of Arrows quiz was devised by Martin and Christine Watkins while living on the Ascension Islands, forty years ago and is a quiz with a twist. Each team selects a dart player for each round. They must hit either the treble, double or single of two nominated numbers. The treble gives three points, the double two with the single scoring one possible point

for their team. That is assuming they get the question right, of

course. If not it passes to the next team for a bonus point. During the evening, teams answered questions on ten different categories - each team nominating a joker round, which could mean them picking up six points for a right answer. The evening was full of laughter and intrigue. For some of the dart players it was the first time they had thrown and others were ‘a little rusty’. It is certainly one of those quizzes where the balance of power switches between teams and anything can happen. Mutz Nutz were the Victors, winning by just three points and a hair’s breadth of a treble.

€1.3 billion EU health emergency plan launched The new European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) presented its first annual work plan, which will have a budget of €1.3 billion in 2022 to prevent, prepare for and rapidly respond to crossborder health emergencies in the EU. HERA can now prepare response capabilities within the EU, address vulnerabilities and strategic dependencies and contribute to reinforcing the global health emergency architecture. Announcing the adoption of the work plan, Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said: “Two years into the pandemic, we know that the capacity to respond decisively to crossborder health emergencies must be at the heart of a strong European Health Union. HERA is already operational and working to ensure that medical countermeasures are available for the present, but also ensuring that the right tools are available for any future health threats. The adoption of HERA’s first work plan will enable it to begin its critical mission, by becoming the EU’s health security watchtower for future health threats, as well

as a key player for health crisis preparedness at global level.” As a key pillar of a strong European Health Union, HERA has set out a number of ambitious deliverables for 2022, both in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 response, and for preparedness for potential future health threats. In the “preparedness phase”, HERA will work closely with other EU and national health agencies, industry, research community, civil society and international partners to improve the EU’s readiness for future health emergencies. Actions include: • Procuring and stockpiling medical countermeasures for a series of public health threats with a budget of over €580 million; • Releasing over €300 million to research and development of medical countermeasures and innovative technologies against emerging threats; • Building a network of manufacturing facilities that can be mobilised in case of emergency; • Establishing a long term and large scale EU platform for clinical trials and data platforms; • Identifying three high-impact

health threats, in addition to COVID-19, by the end of spring in close collaboration with Member States in the HERA Board, EU agencies, international partners and experts. HERA will in addition carry out threat assessments and intelligence gathering, develop models to forecast an outbreak, and map out a response plan at EU level. Actions for 2022 include: • Putting in place a state of the art real-time health threat detection and intelligence system; • Creating a dedicated IT platform for threat assessment and threat prioritisation. In the context of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, HERA’s emergency response functions have already been activated. In the event of further cross-border public health emergencies at EU level, additional action will be taken, notably by activating emergency funding and launching mechanisms for monitoring, new targeted development, procurement and purchase of medical countermeasures and raw materials.

Zero Aspirations

Sustainable, healthy, safe, and accessible. They are the characteristics that describe how cities will be in the not too distant future. Forecasts indicate that cities will have more inhabitants (according to the United Nations, in 2050, almost 70% of the world population will live in a city), they will be older and, in addition, they will have to coexist with new modes of transport and urban distribution of goods, with the help of connectivity and digitisation. The ultimate goal is to move towards a safe system, a comprehensive 0 vision, with 0 victims (neither injured nor deceased), 0 polluting emissions and 0 noise.

Walking All this was discussed at the VI Meeting of Cities for road safety and sustainable mobility organised by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). There it was found that today’s cities are designed with the car in mind, a model that we must modify so that the protagonist of mobility is the pedestrian. At the moment, in cities like London or Berlin, less than 15% of journeys take place on foot; in Barcelona or Zaragoza, for example, that percentage is around 50%. The truth is that this transformation has accelerated after the pandemic. Trends On the horizon are cities where the priority should be walking, even before cycling. “The one who walks does not generate economic interests and nobody defends him. Therefore, defending those who walk is a public responsibility”, says Joan Clos, former mayor of Barcelona. Among other things, he claims sidewalks free of “artifacts” so that all people can walk on them, while he recalls that “the urban regulation of public space corresponds to the municipalities”. Jorge Antonio Azcón, mayor of Zaragoza – a city that has taken on the challenge of being one of the 100 climate-neutral European cities by 2030 – believes that “mobility is going to mark the future of cities” and points to seven trends: clean energy , new modes of transport (VMP, bikes, etc.), shared mobility, autonomous vehicles, technological advances (connectivity), freight (last mile) and pedestrians (on which the life of the city must revolve). In the opinion of Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT Road Safety Observatory, it is necessary for road safety policies to be transversal, that is, to be integrated with other policies, as stated in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030. Covenant Mobility experts agree that the transformation of cities must be the result of the agreement. “It is worth reflecting on public space, agreeing on what needs to be done. If we don’t succeed, we will all lose”, says Clos. But, to reach that agreement, it is necessary to communicate the changes to the citizens in an appropriate way. As Alfonso Gil, deputy mayor of Bilbao and president of the FEMP Committee on Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Road Safety,

points out, “ we must be prepared for change and for communicating change” because the new philosophy of cities “is here to stay” and must come by consensus. In this sense, Carmen Silva, president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, believes that we must bet on coexistence, participation and transparency. In addition, she believes that “it is necessary to teach the before and after” to citizens and “demonstrate what we gain with the new city model”. In addition to consensus and communication, other basic pillars of the new mobility are prevention and road training, to generate good habits among citizens. And, later, if that is not achieved, surveillance and control of dangerous behaviours. In this way, “ risks are avoided, infractions are detected, complaints are generated and respect for the rules is increased,” says Pascual Martínez, national president of UNIJEPOL (National Union of Local Police Chiefs and Executives). Safety: in the city, at 30 km/h “Slowing down is one of the most important things cities can do to make their streets safer”, since “a person is approximately five times less likely to be fatally injured if hit at 30 km/h than at 50 km/h”, states POLIS, the network of European cities and regions that promotes sustainable and safe transport and to which more than 100 cities and entities are members. For this reason, they advise reducing speed in cities, as a security policy and to save lives. And this has been done in Spain, since May the cities released new speed limits, a legislative change that has covered decisions that many city councils had already made. In the city of Irun, a pioneering city, in 2001 it opted for speed 30 in some streets and, in 2013, it was extended to the entire town. Sidewalks have been improved, bike lanes built or public transport reinforced and the result, according to its mayor, José Antonio Santano, is that now “people are the protagonists of the city”. Alicante began to implement speed 30 in 2014. By promoting public transport and pedestrianizing various areas of the city, they have managed to give more space to pedestrians. To offer more mobility alternatives, they are going to implement an electric scooter and bicycle rental service. Another example is Logroño, which in May 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, launched the “Open Streets” strategy to protect health and achieve a fairer distribution of public space. For Pere Navarro, General Director of Traffic, betting on 30 km/h has been “one of the great milestones in road safety. He also assures that “it is not an isolated measure” because, “we know where we are going.” “The goal is to improve the physical and mental health of citizens, create spaces for coexistence, with less noise and less smoke,” he adds. Speed 30 reduces urban accidents, a fact that has not evolved positively. According to data from the National Road Safety Observatory of the DGT, in 2009, accidents on urban roads caused 22% of fatalities and 37% of hospitalised injured people. Ten years later, in 2019, those percentages had increased to 30% and 50%,

respectively. Sustainability: urban distribution of goods It already had a very prominent role before the pandemic, but this has shown that it is an essential sector and one of the main protagonists of mobility. We are talking about the urban distribution of goods. According to data from UNO (an association that brings together distribution companies), this sector grew by around 50% during the pandemic. Francisco Aranda, executive president of UNO, stresses that the distribution of merchandise is an “intensive user of the city” because it is his “work setting”. He assures that, once the current city model has been exhausted, it is necessary to move towards a different one, with road safety (fundamental, worker training), mobility and sustainability as the main bases. Aware of the great importance and dynamism of this sector, cities are also moving. For example, Malaga opened a delivery centre (hub) in an underground car park for parcels and couriers and is now considering another similar one for bars and restaurants, in addition to night delivery with electric vehicles. Valladolid, for its part, chose to limit the distribution of goods in the city from 7 to 11 in the morning, prevent the entry of trucks of more than 12 tons and encourage distribution by bicycle. Accessibility: everyone safe Cities must move towards greater protection of the most vulnerable users, without forgetting, in addition, that “an accessible city is one that allows all citizens to live, move and participate in urban life”, points out María José Aparicio, deputy director General Training and Road Safety Education of the DGT. The data shows the work that remains to be done: in 2020, 50% of the 1,370 deaths in a road accident were pedestrians or were on bicycles or motorcycles. In the case of urban roads, 80% of the people killed in a traffic accident were pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists. The data from the previous year, 2019, were not better: 52% of the total number of deceased were vulnerable; in the case of cities, 82%. In reality, all of us are vulnerable at some point, so we must always protect someone: personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) to pedestrians, cyclists to PMVs, motorcycles to cyclists, cars to motorcycles, etc. For this reason, the different actors in mobility must demand more legislative arms from the cities to be able to regulate, without forgetting information, education and awareness and, of course, the surveillance and control of dangerous behaviour. Added to this demand are various groups such as those who defend people with reduced mobility and pedestrian and cyclist organisations, who demand more space to be able to walk around the city or bike lanes and further limit the space dedicated to private vehicles.

Large Vehicle Checks Complete Driving Licence Codes All last week officers from the Guardia Civil, supported by colleagues in local and regional police forces, carried out a surveillance and control campaign on behalf of the General Directorate of Traffic, which focussed on the safety of vehicles used for the transport of goods and people. The campaign is part of the Operation Truck&Bus developed at a European level by the RoadPol association (European Road Surveillance Network). The officers spent the week verifying that both the conditions in which this type of vehicle circulates, regardless of the country in which they are registered, and the drivers complied with traffic and road safety regulations. Monitoring of aspects such as speed, driving and rest hours, the tachograph, excess weight, possible technical defects of the vehicle or the safety of the transported cargo were focused on, as well as the documentation of the vehicle and the driver is correct and valid, that the seat belt is used by all the occupants of the vehicles, that they are not driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs and that

there were no devices used that cause distraction while driving. Surveillance was be carried out on all kinds of roads and at any time of the day, especially on those roads where the intensity of traffic of this type of vehicle is greater. Despite the fact that 68% of the vehicle fleet in Spain are passenger cars, the transport of goods has an important weight in terms of road safety, since it represents the second most numerous type of vehicle that circulates on our roads, with the 14% of the fleet, and are involved in 13% of the claims with victims that occurred in 2020 in Spain. In addition, in case of accidents, these are more severe due to their masses and dimensions. Buses, meanwhile, represent 0.2% of the total vehicle fleet and are involved in 2% of accidents with victims. In 2020, trucks weighing more than 3,500 kg were involved in 2,705 accidents with victims, in which 199 people died, of which 45 were truck occupants and the rest of the deceased (154) were traveling in other vehicles involved in the accident. In addition,

75% of these accidents took place on interurban roads. Regarding buses, in 2020 there were 1,362 accidents with victims in which a vehicle of this type was involved and in which 18 people died, 2 of them bus occupants and 11 occupants of other vehicles involved in the accident. In this case, 90% of these accidents took place on urban roads. In the last truck and bus surveillance campaign, which took place in October, officers from the Guardia Civil Traffic Group controlled a total of 12,360 vehicles, of which 2,545 truck drivers and 48 bus drivers were reported for failing to comply with any of the precepts of the regulations. Among the most numerous infractions are, among others, those motivated by excessive driving hours, those related to the Technical Inspection, those related to mandatory documentation, either of the vehicle, or of the driver, in addition to those motivated by excess weight. or poor arrangement of the load and for not using the seat belt.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses, and the public, during what are still tough times for everyone” said Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. Organised by the owners of Le Petit Bistrot, Anne and Grainne, and aided by Jilly and Marsha, prizes were donated by customers, friends, and local businesses such as - Pearl’s Plaice - Rocco’s - The Post Room - The Penny Farthing -Tipsy Thistle – Boochies Something Special - No. 6 by Genoa - Fun & Games African Adventure Alexandra’s Hair & Nails. Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus entertained supporters during the intervals and many enjoyed Grainne’s famous Irish Stew. Back in May 2013, Spain was suffering a deep financial crisis, with people losing their jobs and their homes. This led to an increase in abandoned pets because people could not afford vet fees if their pets needed treatment. This was the catalyst for Lyn Baines and Sue Thomason to do something about that, so they created Cruz Azul Murcia to help pet owners on low incomes with vet fees in order they continued to care for their animals. The aim is to promote responsible pet ownership. Cruz Azul has since expanded into other areas, such as managing cat colonies and emergency treatment for injured and abandoned animals. Cruz Azul work closely with a cat charity in Torre Pacheco and another in Sucina.

Both are doing some remarkable work to keep down the cat population in a manageable way. The Sucina project is a prime example to show that trapping, neutering and returning the cats does work. They started seven years ago, against considerable opposition, but their perseverance has really paid off; they haven’t had any new kittens or cats for 18 months and everyone in the village is now on board with the scheme. Cruz Azul opened their donation centre in San Javier to help raise funds to support the work they do and they are ever-grateful to the small band of volunteers, headed up by Lesley Taylor, who work tirelessly to ensure a pleasant shopping experience for all of their customers and to everyone who donates goods to sell. Sadly, Cruz Azul lost a founder member, Sue Thomason, in July 2017, but they know that she would be very proud of them. Cruz Azul is planning another fundraiser at the Tataki Restaurant in Los Alcázares on Monday, 28 March - a ‘Quiz & Curry’ from 2.30 pm. Places are limited, so email info@cruzazulmurcia. com if you would like to reserve tickets. Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. Spiced carrot & lentil soup

A delicious, spicy blend packed full of iron and low in fat to boot. It’s ready in under half an hour, or can be made in a slow cooker Ingredients 2 tsp cumin seeds pinch chilli flakes 2 tbsp olive oil 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel) 140g split red lentils 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine) 125ml milk (or plant based milk if you’re dairy free) plain yogurt and naan bread, to serve Method STEP 1 Heat a large saucepan and dry-fry 2 tsp cumin seeds and a pinch of chilli

Method STEP 1 Heat the butter in a large saucepan and cook the onions and garlic until soft but not browned, about 8-10 mins. STEP 2 Add the mushrooms and cook over a high heat for another 3 mins until softened. Sprinkle over the flour and stir to combine. Pour in the chicken stock, bring the mixture to the boil, then add the bay leaf and simmer for another 10 mins. Benidorm rhino looking for love With Valentine’s Day falling this week, the keepers at Terra Natura park in Benidorm took advantage of the occasion to prepare a giant heart made out of 40 kilos of fruit and vegetables for lucky rhinoceros Nisha. With love in the air, the park was also keen to publicise the fact that Nisha is looking for a mate. Keepers are scouring Europe for a genetically compatible mate in order to breed with Nisha as the species is in serious danger of extinction. The search for a possible partner for Nisha is part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) for this species. The EEP is responsible for managing the reproduction of the animals that make up the population of Indian rhinos housed in zoos belonging to the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA). In the meantime, Nisha enjoyed her Valentine’s themed treat which was made up of 40 kilos of her favourite fresh

fruit and vegetables, such as lettuce, tomatoes, bananas and apples. Nisha is now 21 years of age; a favourable time for reproduction say experts. The park has extensive experience in the management and breeding of Asian rhinos. In fact, it is the only zoo in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the few in Europe that has managed to reproduce this species on two occasions. The first success was achieved with the birth of a calf called Shusto in 2012, which was had by the other female in the group, Shiwa with the male Niko. Years later, Shiware repeated her success, giving birth to baby Duna in September 2019. The Indian rhinoceros is listed as endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. It is a protected and threatened species included in Annex I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). It is estimated that the population in the

wild numbers only about 3,000. The EEPs are the most intensive European programs for the management of species that inhabit zoos and aquariums. These projects allow the collection of information on the state of all the animals of each species that participate in each programme. Using this data, the genealogical book of each species is prepared and a demographic and genetic analysis is carried out, as well as a plan for the future management of reproduction and conservation of the species. Thanks to these programmes, rigorous genetic management is carried out, transforming zoos and aquariums into genetic reservoirs to guarantee the survival of critically endangered species. Terra Natura Benidorm is a nature and animal park dedicated to the care of animal species, and houses animals from 200 different species (98 of them protected or in danger of extinction), 30

conservation projects and 19 breeding programs. Its surface is divided into four areas that represent the continents of

America, Asia and Europe, the Pangea area with an exhibition of venomous creatures.

You don’t get the feeling CR7 and Ralf Rangnick will be whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears this Valentine’s Day, do you? Manchester United are never too far from crisis in their post-Sir Alex era. They’re not smack-bang in one right now, to be fair - but they are teetering and no mistake. Their big-money striker, the prodigal son bought purely so their biggest rivals (who aren’t really their biggest rivals anymore given that they are struggling to see off the likes of Burnley and Southampton) couldn’t have him, the solution that didn’t address any of the actual problems has now failed to score in his last six matches. No longer are the pundits raising an eyebrow at his pressing stats - now it’s the thing he is supposed to still be world-class at. Equally, the Godfather of Modern Football seems to have rocked up about a decade after his sell-by date. There is no doubting Rangnick has influenced the thinking of many a modern-German manager but maybe United should have gone after one of his disciples rather than the preacher? Rangnick’s United are bad. So very, very bad. And that’s just when they have the ball - they are worse when they lose it. As Ralph Hassenhuttl put it oh so subtly having seen his Saints take a point at Old Trafford - “It is not a big secret that when they lose the ball that the reverse gears are not the best from everybody.” I mean, no fingers are being pointed here - except in the direction of Ronaldo, Bruno, Pogba, Sancho and Rashford - so distant from Scott McTominay at times that they made the Gallagher brothers look close. Everyone got very excited when Rangnick arrived talking about his heavy metal football. The one missing component seems to be pretty clear, however. Players that actually fancy putting the shift in when they give it

away. As for Harry Maguire - remind me how much the club paid for him again? Hassenhuttl might have broken a bit of an unspoken code by directly calling out an opposition in that way but what kind of statement against the modern United is that in itself? The Southampton manager making the great United sound like a lazy Sunday side who rate themselves a little too highly? And the worst thing for the United faithful? He’s nailed it with that statement. That and the rumours of the players taking the mick out of Rangnick’s assistant Chris Armas calling him “Ted” after Ted Lasso - somehow you can’t imagine that happening under Fergie even before he won something. The rate it’s going, Rangnick won’t see the season out let alone get a crack at the two years upstairs he’s been promised. No such issues at Goodison Park though where Frank Lampard is clearly the second coming of Howard Kendall (the first version - not the second or third). Lamps saw his Everton side sweep past a hopeless Leeds 3-0 - and, who’d have thunk it, it turns out Donny van der Beek is a bit of a footballer. If you put the 3-1 beating at Newcastle to one side, it’s been a very positive start on Merseyside. Lampard’s former club wrapped up the World Club Cup in Abu Dhabi beating Palmeiras 2-1 after extra time. Given that Lamps was given a lot of credit for them winning the Champions League last season, does that extend to this trophy too? After all, it was Frank that wanted Kai Havertz and it was Havertz who scored the late penalty to seal the title. Raheem Sterling took his desire for the perfect hat-trick to an extreme against Norwich - first getting Riyad Mahrez subbed off so he wouldn’t be on pens, then missing the penalty that was awarded so that he could then tap it in with his left. Don’t let the fact that the first goal was deflected dampen the perfect treble talk. Even if that blatantly means it cannot be

considered a perfect hat-trick. 4-0 to City, once again making the ‘closest Premier League in history’ seem like a bit of a daft shout. There seemed to be hope for Watford when they tempted Roy Hodgson back by pretending they were mermaids - the first result being 0-0 suggesting a bit of defensive steel. The nils have continued, but sadly at the wrong end for Uncle Roy. The Hornets were gently eased aside by Brighton, as they were by West Ham. The most memorable thing about Brentford and Crystal Palace was the reception received by Christian Eriksen before kick-off. Unveiled eight months to the day after his heart attack on the field at Euro 2020, he’s hoping he and his pacemaker can get Brentford beating once again. Burnley might have got a point at Old Trafford during the week with the first glimpse of Wout Weghorst’s good feet for a big man - but they got the result that was expected against Liverpool. Sure, it was only 1-0 and can be filed under ‘decent performance and Premier League survival won’t be decided in home matches against Kloppo’s lot’ but they really do need to find a win from somewhere soon. Everything feels very different in Geordieland. Chris Wood might have been signed to score the goals needed but it turns out Kieran Trippier is sorting that out on his own. Given the captain’s armband, the England international nailed one against Everton and then repeated the trick against Steven Gerrard’s Villa on Sunday. Initially a penalty, VAR correctly sussed it was outside the box and Trips put paid to the old adage “it can be too close to get it up and over” but simply smashing it through the ‘wall’. The issue now is, with the fullback limping off for an x-ray on his foot who will score the goals? Another big win though for Eddie Howe - and a four-point gap between them and the relegation trap door. Antonio Conte might have played the company line of being satisfied with Tottenham’s transfer window but home defeats to Southampton and then Wolves might change his

outwardly sunny demeanour. Hugo Lloris reached peak Hugo Lloris levels - it always seems to happen after a big newspaper interview with the World Cup winner in gifting Raul Jiminez the opener and then the Spurs defending for Wolves’ second was, well, very very Spurs like. Brendan Rodgers started speculation that he could be United’s next boss by buying a house in Cheshire - convenient rumourmongering completely ignoring the fact that Leicester have been terrible for much of this season. Against Rodgers’ Leicester, Kurt Zouma picked up an injury in the warm-up - presumably to his conscience, delayed just like concussion can be. Much of the prematch talk had been about cats and Leicester’s inability to defend setpieces. At full-time, most of the talk was about Leicester’s inability to defend set-pieces. Fancy a quick spin on the transfer rumour merry-go-round? Go on then, fill your boots. If United opt for the Poch, then he’ll be up for a reunion with Harry Kane. If United ignore the players and go with Rangnick’s preferred option, Erik ten Hag, then they’ll probably get Haaland. Real Madrid got round the table last week to discuss who the next Marcelo could be and found Kieran Tierney’s name on a list someone had drawn up. Gareth Bale and his ever-shrinking thighs could be seen at Tottenham again next season. Absolutely brassic Barcelona would like to sign Leeds’ Ilian Meslier in the summer. Jack Wilshere, despite hanging around Arsenal in the hope that Arteta thinks he might be less of a liability than Xhaka is wanted by Como in Serie B of Italy - despite the fact they can’t sign non-EU players. And finally, Chelsea (clearly bereft of any English options in their Academy) fancy signing Brighton’s Adam Webster for a lot of money at the end of the season. thing but the winners were Neil and Trevor Howard with 15.74kg.

Abbey Angling On Tuesday the 8th of February we fished the sixth round of The Abbey Angling cup at the El Bosquet Complex at Crevillente. The owners have been doing a bit

of work around the complex, fixing pegs, putting up new fences, repairing roadways and are gradually slowly but surely improving the facilities. Winner on the day and maintaining his lead at the top was Richard

Smith. Richard was draw on what has become the best peg on the complex peg 1. This peg has now won 10 times out of the last 37 matches at this venue and for no apparent reason it holds a vast quantity of fish. He

fished initially bread punch and then switched to maggot to catch several carp for 12.78kg. In second place was Neil McBernie, drawn on peg 35 he fished maggot shallow across for 11.54kg. In third place was Harry Billing. Harry was drawn on the old back-channel peg 20. He fished bread punch tight across to take several small carp and mullet for 10.86kg. Other section winners were Paul Burton 4.66kg, Bill Cannon 8.34kg, Mich Hill 6.20kg and finally Graham Patterson with 6 .08kg. The pairs event was a very close run

Rods N Reels The following day we did battle again on the same complex and yes peg 1 won again. This time it was our old friend Terry”Mr Pastry” Brindley. He fished obviously great big lumps of paste on the pole and weighed a great total of 30.50kg. In second place and again with a good weight was Richard Smith. Drawn on peg 37 he weighed 20.58 of carp, caught mainly on the maggot. In third place was Neil McBernie who fished maggots shallow on peg 7 for 13.38kg. Other section winners were myself Ian Brown with 9.98kg and Tony McMillan with 5.88kg. The pairs event was won by myself and Terry Brindley with a combined weight of over 40kg.
