Carnaval returns to Torrevieja

torrevieja was filled with colour, lights and crowds of people on Sunday as the beloved ‘Carnaval’ returned for the first time after lockdown. despite initial uncertainty about whether the parade could or should go ahead, the desire by organisers and participants to return to normality won out and Sunday afternoon saw more than 500 people in spectacular costume dance their way through the

streets of the town in one of the area’s most popular annual spectacles. the music began pumping out of mobile speakers on Plaza de María asunción as the various themed groups made their way slowly down the main street, Calle Ramón Gallud. the event didn’t take place at all in 2021, but did happen in 2020 – a few short weeks before lockdown. Regular participants in Sunday’s

competition parade were delighted to be out in full costume once again, competing for a prize fund of almost €17,000 with awards for best costumes and best choreography. Painstaking hours spent making and bejewelling costumes, perfecting makeup and practicing dance steps finally came to fruition in front of delighted crowds. Each of the 28 ‘comparsas’ or troupes paused before a specially erected stand at Plaza de La Constitucion where an exhibition area was overlooked by judges. there was also an area for spectators with reduced mobility and an area where music, lights and noise were toned down to facilitate people on the autistic spectrum. there is another chance to enjoy the spectacle when the Carnaval returns – Saturday night, 26th February at 7pm for the ‘night parade’.

Torrevieja is no longer among the top five most populated cities in the region With 82,842 inhabitants, torrevieja is no longer among the five most populated cities in the Valencian Community. it has been overtaken and relegated to sixth place by torrent. torrent, located further north in the province of Valencia, has 84,025 officially registered inhabitants in the census according to data from the national institute of Statistics. For the last three decades, torrevieja occupied fifth place in the ranking by number of inhabitants in the region, coming in behind Valencia, alicante, Elche and Castellón. Within the alicante province, it is still the third largest city by population, although by a narrow margin compared to orihuela (78,940 registered), which is followed by Benidorm

(with 69,118), alcoy (59,128 inhabitants), San Vicente del Raspeig (58,912) and Elda (with 52,551). torrevieja’s growth over the last fifty years has been meteoric but was paralyzed by the recession of 2008 and has stabilized since then. in the mid1970s torrevieja was a town with barely more than 8,000 inhabitants, the first urban developments that began to be approved in the 70s sparked its growth. Experts attribute a definitive boost to growth to the guarantee of drinking water from the tajo-Segura in 1981. in 2003 torrevieja surpassed 75,000 inhabitants and in 2013 there were officially 105,000. however, the statistics office began find that many tourist municipalities did not remove residents from the census

when they moved elsewhere, and continued to receive state support based on an inflated number of inhabitants. When new rules were brought in to tighten up census data, the difference was significant. Between 2014 and 2016, torrevieja’s population was lowered by more than 20,000 residents. Since the pandemic, torrevieja is experiencing a new boost in housing demand. over the next two years, the construction 7,400 new homes over almost two million square meters is planned at La hoya, the last developable land remaining in the municipal area. torrevieja also continues to be the largest in the country in terms of the total volume of second homes - more than 62,000.

95 year old rescued after floor gives way a 95-year-old woman has escaped unharmed after the floor of her house in Callosa de Segura collapsed without warning. Part of the floor of a ground floor house on Calle Carlos Galiana in Callosa de Segura gave way early on Saturday afternoon, with the 95-year-old woman inside. the distance between the original floor of the house and the hole created by the collapse was approximately one metre. the emergency call came in at around 3.30pm on Saturday. Firefighters from orihuela were dispatched to the scene to rescue the woman who was

trapped in the void after the floor of her home gave way. despite the age of the

woman, it appeared that she had not suffered any serious injuries during the ordeal.

20 scrap yards under investigation 20 scrap yards in the alicante province are under investigation for environmental infractions, it emerged this week. investigators are looking into the activities of the scrap yards for emitting nearly three tons of fluorinated gases, which is equivalent to 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide. the environmental protection group of the Generalitat Valenciana has, since September 2021, been monitoring, several companies across the alicante province on suspicion that they were emitting refrigerant gases from vehicles that were going to be decommissioned. in total, 30 companies were inspected, with inspectors detecting irregularities in 20 of them. among the deficiencies observed were the lack of the pertinent authorization from the department of Climate Emergency and Ecological transition to decontaminate vehicles, the lack of documents proving the removal of waste by authorized waste managers,

the lack of the necessary qualifications to handle refrigerant gases, the failure to present annual reports to the administration or the existence of irregular decontamination procedures. officers from the environmental protection unit have opened police proceedings against nine people for lack of documentation, employee statements and evidence

obtained during the inspections. Proceedings have now been brought to alicante Court of instruction, since scrap yards are obliged to extract waste correctly before storing it and delivering it to an authorized waste manager. among the most polluting are the gases from the cooling system, specifically, ‘R134a’, which produces a significant negative impact on the environment.

Mystery of driver missing Queen tests positive for Covid from car in sea a specialist team of Guardia Civil divers continue to search for the 50-year-old driver of a red audi a1, which plunged in to the sea from the cliff in Punta Prima. the incident happened on Friday evening when the car was spotted floating upside down. Police were alerted by the cars own security system. When officers arrived on the scene the engine was still running in the vehicle, its lights were on and there was a mobile phone. however there was no one inside at all. the team searched the cliff top, inside the car and in the waters near-by. the family of the missing Spanish driver, believed to be from Murcia, were contacted and confirmed they had not heard from him since Friday afternoon. the man, a father of two teenagers, is described as responsible and his whereabouts remain a mystery. the search continues and

investigators are working on several theories. there are no signs of skidding or that the man was injured before the incident.

there are also no signs that he was thrown or jumped from the car on impact.

Woman killed after car lands in ditch the female driver of a uKregistered car died on Friday after it left the carriageway and over turned into a ditch filled with water. the road she was travelling on leads to the El hondo natural Park in

Crevillente. Little is known about the accident but it appears no other vehicles were involved. the driver is thought to be in her forties and there was no-one else in the vehicle with her.

the 66-year-old Spanish woman was found shortly before 8am on Friday when her car landed upside down in an irrigation ditch on the road that connects the El hondo natural park with Matola.

on the day that Spanish King Felipe Vi was declared free of Covid Queen Elizabeth ii of England tested positive for the virus. the King’s test for covid-19 was carried out in Madrid on Sunday, so from today, Monday, he will be able to resume his daily official activities, according to sources from the Royal household. the King Felipe tested positive on February 9 in a test that was performed after he was diagnosed with “mild symptoms” the night before. Since then, and after testing positive again on the 15th, the head of state has remained in isolation, forcing him to suspend his face-toface agenda. Buckingham Palace announced on Sunday that the 95 year-old monarch – who is celebrating her 70th year on the throne - had tested positive for Coronavirus. it is reported that the Queen, who is fully vaccinated, is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms and expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week. “She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all appropriate guidelines,” the Palace added. the Queen is not the only person in her circle to test

positive for Covid-19, a royal source said. “a number of cases have been diagnosed in the Windsor Castle team,” the source told the media, without specifying who else had tested positive. the Queen’s health has been closely scrutinised since late last year when she retreated from public events on advice from

doctors to rest after an overnight hospital stay for an undisclosed reason. Fresh concern was renewed in the past few days as multiple family members selfisolated after testing positive for the virus. Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, tested positive for Covid-19 for a second time

10 days ago while his wife, Camilla, duchess of Cornwall, confirmed she too had the virus last Monday. a royal source confirmed at the time that the Queen had “recently” met her eldest son, but the source did not elaborate on exactly when the interaction had taken place. the Prince of Wales previously contracted coronavirus in March 2020, as countries around the world were first feeling the effects of the pandemic. Charles said at the time that he was first infected that he had been lucky only to experience mild symptoms, adding that he’d “got away with it quite lightly.” Prince William also tested positive for Covid-19 in 2020, though his infection wasn’t revealed until months later. the Queen’s diagnosis comes days after she completed her first inperson engagement since returning to Windsor from Sandringham where she had marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne and the death of her father, King George Vi. Last week, the Queen held an audience with the outgoing defence Services Secretary, Rear admiral James Macleod, and his successor, Major General Eldon Millar, during which she appeared in good spirits.

Route 99 – the ‘Valencian Camino’ a new initiative by the Valencian Government encourages travel enthusiasts to visit the least populated towns in the Valencian Community. the project, Route 99, aims to promote and give more visibility to municipalities of the Valencian Community with less than 99 inhabitants. the new walking route publicizes

the 24 least populated municipalities of the region. the official website www.ruta99.gva.es details “the values and attractions” of the gastronomy and natural and historical heritage of these towns, as well as their range of restaurants and accommodation. Route 99 provides travellers with a ‘passport’, in the style of the Camino

de Santiago, which can be stamped in each of these municipalities, inviting ‘Valencian pilgrims’ to visit them in a group or with friends and family, either by motorcycle, by bike or on foot. a second phase is already being planned, called ‘Ruta 99 Plus’, in which municipalities with a larger population will participate. the initiative constitutes a kind of Camino de Santiago for Valencia, which was developed in direct response to the stories of an ‘empty Spain’ with organisers wanting to make it known that the towns inland of the Valencian Community are not empty but full of life, values and opportunities. Currently 180 municipalities of the Valencian Community are at risk of depopulation and specifically in the province of Castellón, 60% of towns have less than 200 inhabitants. on the website www.ruta99.gva.es details can be found of where to eat and sleep, natural and historical highlights, as well as suggested hiking routes in order that travellers wishing to see some of the real Spain can enjoy places that are not usually part of the usual tourist destinations. Route 99 stops in those regions most in danger of depopulation. the following 24 towns are part of the route – furthest north in Castellón, in the Els Ports region: herbés, Palanques, Vallibona and Villores; in the Baix Maestrat, Castell de Cabres; in alto Palancia: higueras, Matet, Pavías and Sacañet; in alto Mijares: Espadilla, Fuente la Reina, Fuentes de ayódar,

torralba del Pinar, torrechiva, Vallat, Villamalur and Villanueva de Viver; in Valencia, in the Rincón de ademuz: Puebla de San Miguel and in La Vall d’albaida: Sempere and Carrícola; and in the alicante province, Benillup,

Benimassot, Famorca and tollos. the Route 99 ‘passport’ can be stamped in participating establishments in each of the 24 towns. to get yours, go to the website https:// ruta99.gva.es/ - from the top menu, click on ‘Ruta 99’ – then click on the first instruction (descarga e imprime el documento) which will download a PdF of your Route 99 passport which you can later print. Participants can apply for a Route 99 backpack – once you have completed half of the route (12 towns across three different provinces) take a photograph of your Route 99 ‘passport’ and email it to ruta99@gva. es, indicating your details and where you would like the bag to be sent.

Man fined €11k for mistreating and abandoning cats torrevieja local police have issued a fine of €11,110 for mistreatment and abandonment of seven cats. the incident occurred when residents alerted police that a man was pushing cats off a first floor balcony with a sweeping brush. the record fine was handed down to a norwegian man after he was found to have thrown and kicked the cats off the balcony of the apartment. a neighbour nearby recorded the incident on his mobile phone. according to reports, the apartment on Calle San Emigdio is owned by the norwegian man who had visited the property to empty it after the previous tenant had passed away. the tenant had lived alone with his seven cats and the landlord came to empty the house of furniture – and animals – in order to rent it out once more. Several neighbours watched in horror as the man cornered the cats on the balcony, the animals meowing in terror, before pushing them off the side with a sweeping brush, causing them to fall two floors to the street below. Several neighbours called the police and supplied officers with mobile phone footage of the incident. Children who were standing below the balcony shouted up to the man who is reported to have told them with a smile that it didn’t matter, they’d fall on their feet anyway, before kicking one of the cats to make him run away. officers arrived and found some of the cats below, several with various injuries to their heads and noses. the police asked the man where the animals lived, and for an explanation of

his actions but officers say he said he didn’t speak Spanish and didn’t know

that the neighbours and police were reproaching him for. the man has now been issued with several fines, amounting to over €11,000 – five fines for €1000 each for not having taking measures to prevent the animals from escaping, and another of €6050 for the proven animal abuse of one of the cats. the man was also fined for dumping waste items out of hours – a cat flap was left in the middle of the street. Police said that the man could have opted to have the cats relocated to the municipal shelter, the simplest solution to guarantee the safety and welfare of the animals. Municipal shelter staff are still searching for two of the cats as only five were located after the ordeal, many of them hiding under vehicles near their former home, afraid to come out. now they are in quarantine, vaccinated and waiting to be sterilized and adopted to a home that will offer them the same love and care they had enjoyed from their former owner.

Emergency plan for self harm among school children news emerged this week that the Ministry of Education has sent guidelines to schools this year to detect issues such as suicide or self harm among school children. the regional government is preparing an emergency plan on mental health in the classroom following data indicating that the covid-19 health crisis and the restrictions has had a worrying impact on the mental health of children and teenagers in the Valencian Community. the statistics, which only show cases detected and not overall cases, indicate that over the last three years, as many as 2000 students in the region have engaged in self-harming behaviour. that is, they have self harmed, considered taking their own lives or have attempted suicide. the data was collected in the Previ registry (Plan for the prevention of violence and the promotion of coexistence) of the Ministry, and indicates just how the pandemic has aggravated the mental health situation. during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 academic years these behaviours had been detected and reported among around 0.06% of the student body (almost 500 students per academic year), during the 2020-21 academic year, this percentage increased to 0.1% of the students, that is, almost twice as many. Experts stressed that these incidents of self-harm or suicide attempts do not always occur at school, but that key

behaviours can be detected. in fact, in many cases, it is the teachers who raise the alarm and notify the family of their concerns. in terms of the data gathered by Previ, direct suicide attempts registered were 0.002% in 2018-19, and 0.001% in 2019-20 and 2020-21, which translates into fifty students over the last three courses. the protocol and guidelines that has been issued to schools encourages an end to the “taboo” of the subject of self harm and suicide. Experts say that such incidents are occuring increasingly “at younger ages”; and highlights the role of the school as a “transforming tool of society”. the data is worrying, as was commented on this week by the

Valencian Government. Mónica añón, coordinator of the Previ for the General directorate of Educational inclusion acknowledged that, during lockdown reports of problematic behaviour continued despite there being no classes. añón said that through online contact, teachers reported 88 worrying incidents via the Previ system, “they were self-harm, suicidal ideation, cyberbullying and child abuse, detected when the children connected with the tutors. We couldn’t believe it was happening at the time.” in the Previ system, in addition to selfharm or suicide attempts, incidences of attacks on teachers, child abuse, sexist violence or bullying are also recorded. in total, this year, schools have already reported more than 3,200 incidents.

Pensions Black Hole

there are two major causes of the black hole in final-salary pension schemes, experts agree. the first is relatively simple - people are living for longer. that makes pensions more expensive for companies because they are paying pensioners for longer. the second major problem is the uncertain economic outlook.

if you have a “final salary scheme” you can request a cash equivalent transfer value in order to secure your pension pot. Final salary pension transfer values are unlikely ever to be this high again, as they have been artificially boosted by the eagerness of scheme owners to offload their members. Moreover, you won’t have to worry anymore about the fund’s ability to pay your pension Many companies with final salary throughout your retirement. pensions have huge deficits – companies such as British telecom, which has a pension if you are daunted by the bureaucracy and deficit of £6.3 billion. Forty-five drug smugglers arrested in dawn raids authorities from a number of countries joined forces in dawn raids which focussed mainly on Spain and Belgium to takedown one of Europe’s most active albanian-speaking cocaine drug-smuggling gangs. around 80 homes were searched with 45 suspects arrested, including king-pin traffickers involved in highprofile cases in different countries around the world. Spain was one of the countries that the criminals used to

laundered huge amounts of money once the imported cocaine had been sold. it is believed that the network imported cocaine from Latin america into various European ports and then organised the trade o the Class a drug by cars, lorries, boats and planes. More than 600 police and law enforcement officers alongside prosecutors and investigators from Europol and Eurojust carried out the simultaneous raids

Europol, and Eu-funded crime-fighting organisation co-ordinated information and evidence in the investigation, which included countries including: Croatia, Germany, italy and the netherlands. the raids were the culmination of months of planning and took place on 15th February. in Spain the operation began in 2018 with the arrest of a highranking member of an organised crime gang.

House prices rise the cumulative price of housing for sale has risen in the Valencian Community by 13 percent in five years -compared to 2016- and 0.8 percent more in one year -compared to 2020-, according to the study ‘Cumulative variation of housing in Spain in 2021’, based on the prices of housing for sale in december of the last 16 years of the Fotocasa Real Estate index. however, this latest house price marks a decrease of -14 percent in 10 years -compared to 2011- and -40 percent in 15 years -compared to 2006-. “indeed, the data indicates that the price of second-hand

housing has increased in the last five years, but contrary to popular perception, it has not done so as high as is estimated among citizens, presenting 16 percent of cumulative rise at a national level”, explained María Matos, director of Studies and Spokesperson for Fotocasa. analysing the prices paid for a home for sale in 2016, the average price per square metre of housing has increased by 13 percent in the Valencian Community (from 1,287 euro/ m2 in december 2016, to 1,448 euro/m2 in december 2021), according to the Fotocasa study. thus, Valencians five years ago (2016) had to pay an average of

102,928 euro for the sale of an 80 m2 home, compared to the 115,805 euro paid on average in 2021. By provincial capitals, housing in the capital of Valencia has increased its value by 32 percent since 2016 and, in other words, for an 80-square-meter home for sale, 129,392 euro were paid 5 years ago (€1,617/m2 in 2016), while in 2021 170,410 euro have been paid (€2,130/m2 in 2021). Meanwhile, two more Valencian cities have a positive cumulative compared to five years ago (2016) and they are alicante (16 percent) and Castelló de la Plana (7.0 percent).

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner Chorus Financial Chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in Spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. a number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the uK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to Brexit. there is a lot of confusion in this area so i will do my best to share what we know so far. Before Brexit, the Spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the dGS and CnMV – allowed uK regulated entities to advise those of us living in Spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When Britain left the Eu, those rights were removed for uK based firms. in preparation for Brexit Spain published article 13 of the Royal decree Law (which you can read here: http://www.cnmv.es/Portal/ Brexit/FaQ-RdL.aspx?lang=en). Within this, the CnMV have confirmed that, according to article

13(3) of the RdL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in Spain while domiciled in the united Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. in more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your uK iFa, they could have continued to provide service to you until 30th June 2021. this extension was granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your iFa to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in Spain. i wanted to further clarify this with the FCa, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the EEa need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can

provide services to Spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of Spanish law.” With this response the FCa are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the Spanish regulator’s position in terms of advising those of us who live in Spain. So where does this leave you if you still have a uK iFa? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly. it may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the Eu and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in Spain. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. the FCa have set incredibly high standards for uK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent and appropriate. you should expect that standard to continue here in Spain. in simple terms, transparency means

your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. i would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. Remember, many products and funds in Spain still pay advisers non-disclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the uK many years ago. this can make your overall fees incredibly high. one big clue is that if a product has a tie-in, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your investment value. you should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. of course, if you really want to be sure, then speak to a Chorus Financial adviser for a recommendation – this is always free and without pressure or obligation, so you can explore your options and make the best decision for you. Call Chorus Financial today on +34 965 641 163, emailinfo@chorusfinancial. es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP With investors’ attention repeatedly dragged towards what was not happening in ukraine and Russia, and helped by the uK parliamentary mid-term recess, the pound was able to add an average of 0.2% against the other major currencies. it was the outright winner last Friday only because it had fallen to the rear of the pack the previous day. in the last month, the pound put on an average of 0.8%, beaten only by the uSd and aud. although the uK economic data were not all obviously constructive, they were good enough to avoid creating any real stumbling block for the pound. almost all of last Friday’s gross domestic product and output figures showed positive growth. this morning’s retail sales numbers for January revealed a strong rebound from december’s omicron-induced slump. the only real bone of contention was the gap between wages and prices. tuesday’s labour market overview put basic wages 3.7% higher on the year (4.3% higher including bonuses). Wednesday’s consumer price inflation report put headline inflation at 5.5% (and RPi inflation at 7.8%). there is concern that household costs are racing ahead of incomes and that the gap will widen further in the next couple of months when higher taxes come into play.

EURO For all the obvious reasons, the euro has not been helped by Russian military “exercises” on its borders and Washington’s belief that an invasion of ukraine is imminent. nor has the mood been lightened by a long-awaited European Court of Justice ruling that the Eu can withhold billions of euros of funding to Poland and hungary because they are not observing democratic standards. among the top-tier currencies, the euro was the week’s poorest performer (the noK had a slightly worse run) with an average loss of 0.6%. it gave up nearly a cent to sterling and lost a fifth of a uS cent. the European Central Bank’s Chief Economist was vaguely helpful to the currency on thursday when he said in a speech that permanently-low inflation might be a thing of the past and talked of a “gradual normalisation” of monetary policy. although still far from a policy hawk, Mr Lane at least showed signs of casing off his Überdove costume. his boss offset his not-quitehawkishness with her comments to the European Parliament. Christine Lagarde spoke of the need for “flexibility and optionality”. She also stressed that there will be no rush to remove stimulus and tighten monetary policy. the ECB president appeared to be downplaying the comments made after the last Governing Council meeting.

Murder reconstruction Teen who killed parents delayed due to lack of key could be free before 21 around 20 police officers were deployed to an address in Elche this week to stage a reconstruction of the murder of a young woman which took place on Christmas day. the reconstruction was approved by the court but had to be abandoned at the last minute as, when officers arrived, it transpired the property in which the alleged murder took place had been fitted by an anti-squatter door by the bank. the alleged murderer, a 22 year old man, had also been taken to the scene in a police car but did not get out of the car and later in the morning was brought back to Fontcalent prison in alicante. this was the third reconstruction attempt after the previous two were suspended due to covid. around twenty agents from the Prevention and Reaction unit (uPR) of the Citizen Security Brigade and the Specialized Violent Crime unit (udEV) of the Judicial Police of Elche were on site at 10am on Wednesday morning to recreate the circumstances of the murder. the victim, 25 year old mother of two yolanda, is believed to have been murdered by her partner, her body found on Christmas day last year with a

single gunshot to the head. the original door to the property was broken by the national Police when they discovered the body and in its place an “antiokupas” (anti-squatter) iron door had been fitted. at first it was thought that the metal

door had been installed by the Elche City Council, in the end it became apparent that a bank had fitted it. after multiple negotiations with the bank, the court was informed that someone was going to come with the keys, but by 1:30 p.m. no one had yet appeared and it has been decided to postpone the reconstruction, which had been

requested by the Prosecutor’s office. the alleged murderer, who had an on and off relationship with the victim, was arrested on december 30 by the Police in a dramatic intervention. the fugitive had barricaded himself with four hostages in his ex girlfriend’s house and even opened fire on officers when they attempted to arrest him. Miraculously, there were no injuries, since the detainee was armed with an aK-47 assault rifle - a Kalashnikov and a 9-millimeter parabellum pistol. the police later arrested another eleven people, many of them for covering up for the suspect. a gun thought to be the murder weapon, was also seized during the arrest. according to officers, the detainee received the help of several people to remain hidden and to access the home of his ex-girlfriend where he barricaded himself in an attempt to avoid arrest. the accused, who has not admitted responsibility for yolanda’s murder, is also awaiting trial as the alleged perpetrator of another serious assault. he is accused of attempting to kill man by cutting his neck with a glass.

the teenager who confessed to the murder of his parents and ten year old brother could be free at age 21 with no criminal record, reports this week suggest. Legal experts believe that, if found guilty, the youngster would serve up to five years in a young offenders prison, before three years of supervised release – the maximum sentence allowed by law if he is convicted by a juvenile court. the crime that has shocked the entire country has raised questions over the law governing crimes by minors in Spain. if the same crime had been committed by an 18 year old, the suspect would go to prison, potentially for life. as the suspect in this case is a minor – turning 16 soon - at 21 he would be free and without any criminal record. the 15 year old is believed to have confessed to shooting his parents and younger brother with a shotgun after an argument over his school grades. allegedly, he first shot his mother while she was sitting on the sofa. When his younger brother came into the room after hearing the gunshots, he is believed to have shot him too. he is then said to have waited a number of hours for his father to come home from work and shot

him as he entered the house. Reports indicate he hid the three bodies in the shed and spent three days playing videogames until family members arrived to find out what was going on after a lack of contact from the boy’s parents. the Law of the Minor in Spain does not so much seek the punishment of the perpetrator of a crime, but more so their reeducation and reintegration into society. this same legislation also outlines that once a convicted person reaches the age of 18, he could serve the remainder of his sentence in a prison;

although experts commenting on this particular case have ruled this out. once the Elche teen’s sentence has been served, he would have to spend up to a maximum of three years on probation, a time during which the offender would subject to special supervision so that he acquires the necessary skills for social integration. Police sources say that this case could be tried and sentenced within three months. Currently, investigators are waiting for analysis of evidence collected at the crime scene, the family home in Elche.

Spain plans own Eurovision Results for Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest are typically very disappointing – coming second from last or within the bottom five every year – which rarely reflects the quality of its entries or experience and talent of its artists. the best finish in recent history was exactly a decade ago, in 2012, when legendary flamenco-pop artist Pastora Soler came 10th, and otherwise, music star reality show finalists and winners, long-running chart-topping singers, and everyone in between, have never been anywhere near close to getting a victory for Spain. now, though, it might just be on the brink of realising it: Spain has announced plans to launch its own version of the Eurovision. the ‘hispavisión’ would involve entries from the whole of Latin america – countries which, of course, thanks to geography, would never be able to enter the Eurovision (even though australia managed to switch hemispheres in time to get itself in on the act). Radio televisión Española (RtVE), Spain’s national broadcasting company – the Spanish answer to the BBC – is the ‘management team’ behind the country’s Eurovision entries and provides the commentary throughout the show; it is now the driving force behind hispavisión. the idea is to showcase entries

from countries with a common language – Spanish – which is the majority national tongue in South and Central america, official in 19 countries, although it would seem likely that other Latin american nations such as Brazil, Belize, Surinam, Guyana and others would be allowed to enter if their songs were at least partly in the Spanish language. in fact, the first-ever hispavisión will include Portugal

and Brazil as ‘guest countries’. no mention has yet been made of inviting territories or nations beyond Europe and Latin america which share the Spanish – or, indeed, the Portuguese – language, but the song contest will probably be open to future development and expansion. hispavisión comes as part of a wider project uniting commonlanguage nations on either side of the pond: RtVE wants to launch a new television channel focusing on Latin american arts, entertainment and culture, with music videos, films and celebrity

interviews, and will actively reach out to the industry in Latin america itself and among the non-Spanish hispanic community in Spain. “the idea and determination to do so came out of the recent Benidorm Fest,” explains RtVE chairman José Manuel Pérez tornero. this song contest in the Costa Blanca holiday capital was devised as a vehicle for choosing Spain’s 2022 Eurovision candidate, although it ended in major controversy - Rigoberta Bandini and tanxugueiras getting the lion’s share of the public vote, particularly the former, and yet it was Chanel terrero who won the honour of representing her country in torino this coming May. the hispavisión is likely to capture a huge tV audience, fanbase, voter base and competition for entry, given that the latest figures by the Spanish-language standardisation board, the Cervantes institute in Madrid, show that 493 million people are native Spanish-speakers. this number has grown by six million since 2020, and is in addition to another 24 million who are currently students of Spanish as a foreign language. the first hispavisión Song Contest will take place in 2023, in the Caribbean Colombian holiday hotspot city of Cartagena de indias.

Protection for the sand dunes of Orihuela Costa

the Councillor for the Environment, dámaso aparicio, has announced that the local government is carrying out three projects with the aim of recovering the dune margins in different locations along the orihuela coastline. the department of the Environment is working in collaboration with the natura 2000 network, the institute of Coastal Ecology and the Ministry of Coasts. the first of these projects is focused on Cala Bosque and will be executed by the Ministry of Coasts and is already underway with the restoration of the dune environment. Experts have removed invasive species and repopulated the area with plants typical of the coastal habitat. in addition, a fence has been installed to mark the area and to encourage the recovery of sand, with the aim of reinstating and protecting the dunes. a project is also planned for Mil Palmeras where fencing will prevent bathers from trampling through the dunes on their way to the beach bar and also to protect rare native plants such as the ‘Cat’s head’ Jarillas, that are found in this area. the final project outlined by the

Councillor will concentrate on the dunes of La Glea, with the elimination of invasive plants and the installation, again, of fencing to recover the dune front. the aim is to create a cushioning margin against the machinery used when cleaning the beach. in addition, “this sand dune also has endangered plants that we want to protect,” explained the councillor. dámaso aparicio highlighted the importance of being able to carry out these actions “since they are necessary to preserve the natural environment of our coast and to prevent invasive plants from competing with our native vegetation of our coastline”. he added that these works are also being carried out in line with the recommendations of the Blue Flags audits, so “after carrying out these actions we contribute to the improvement of the indicators to qualify for this important recognition”. the Councillor said: “these three projects, as well as others carried out previously, such as the recovery of the La Glea micro-reserve are being carried out to recover the habitats of the dune ecosystems which is key to the environment.”

Action demanded at Aguamarina

PSoE, the Socialist opposition party is calling on the orihuela Government to take urgent action due to the risk of falling rocks from the cliffs at aguamarina. these are claimed to be a danger to life for unsuspecting beachgoers and this isn’t the first time the local government has been taken to task over

the situation. there were calls in the summer for fencing to be erected to protect against possible landslides. PSoE claims local police have had to evacuate the area several times because of the danger to bathers.

Council extends bike lane for La Marina

San Fulgencio town Council has started work on the repair and improvement of avenida de El Convenio, which includes the construction of a cycle lane which will be merged to extend the existing one. the Councillor for town Planning, Francisco Molero, said: “the town Council has considered it necessary to upgrade the entrance road to the urbanisation of La Marina, which is currently in poor condition, to help improve road safety for both vehicles and the many people who come to walk in this area.” the main work consists of the creation of a cycle lane in both directions that will run parallel to the pavement, and will be approximately one kilometre in length. the new cycle lane will connect with the existing CV860, which links the town centre of San Fulgencio with La Marina. the Councillor explained: “Bicycle users will now have a second entrance to access the Progreso roundabout,

Water bills set to rise Water bills across the Province of alicante could rise by as much as 25 percent as reservoirs run dry and desalination costs increase. the lowest level of rainfall for several years has left some reservoirs at just a quarter full. this coupled with demand for desalination and high energy costs could be the perfect conditions to brew up a storm in drinking water supplies. Water consortium bosses have described the situation as ‘worrying’ and believe the only solution would be unseasonal rainfall.

Irish teacher stabbed by student in Murcia relieving the traffic congestion on the main road.” he pointed out that the work will include improving the pavements that run parallel to the road to make them wider and allow two people to cycle. in addition, potholes will be repaired at various points along the road. the total cost of the work is 47,707 euros, to be paid for from the municipal budget, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of February.

Mad Hatters raise funds for Butterfly Children

DEBRA, the charity supporting the Butterfly Children, expressed its thanks to the Mad Hatters and customers of the Pint Depot for raising a staggering €3,205.8 for the cause. A spokesperson for DEBRA said, “La Zenia Beach was once again the setting for the Mad Hatters annual New Year´s day sponsored swim, it was a sunny day and this year they were dressed in Men in Black suits. The swim took place at 2pm with a crowd gathered to take photos and cheered on the Mad Hatters as they entered the sea. All participants had to swim in the sea for a minimum of 15 minutes which they all did with ease and Shirley was on hand with her tin to take any donations which were gratefully received.” “With the swim completed and Men in Black suits back on, there was time for the Jerusalema dance before they left the beach, once again the

crowd showed their appreciation and enjoyed the performance. The Mad Hatters returned to the Pint Depot to performthe dance again in their suits for all their customers, which went down a storm.” All the customers showed their appreciation and the donations kept on coming. Charlie Osborne aged twelve had overheard his Mum and Dad talking about the sponsored swim and Charlie decided to enter, so he set up a go fund me page for sponsorship and contributed over €1,600 to the funds raised. “DEBRA would like to thank the Mad Hatters for all their hard work in organising this event and their continued support, the customers from the Pint Depot and friends who support them and gave so very generously to our cause - THANK YOU.”

San Fulgencio hires two maintenance workers through Ecovid programme The City Council has hired two construction workers for maintenance and repair tasks. San Fulgencio Town Hall has recently taken on two new construction workers through the ECOVID employment programme for the recruitment of people over 30 years of age who are unemployed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The recruitment was made possible thanks to a grant within the framework of the strategic subsidy plan of LABORA, Valencian Employment and Training Service. The programme is also financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) of the Valencian Community. The aim of the programme is to grant incentives for the hiring of unemployed people by local entities. The programme encourages appropriate labour integration policies aimed at cohorts that have greater difficulties in

finding employment. All of this with the aim of providing work, experience and sustaining economic activity. San Fulgencio’s Councillor for Employment and Training, Ana Mª Villena, explained that “the grant amounts to a total of 30,348 euros, and has allowed the incorporation of these two workers with a one-year contract.” The main function of both employees will be to carry out maintenance and repair work in the municipality. Villena has indicated that this is an employment programme that the Town Hall has been requesting since its creation, at the beginning of the pandemic, as “we believe that this and all the aid we can obtain is very necessary to be able to lend a hand to those residents of the municipality who are having a hard time because of the health situation.”

Early morning crash in Torrevieja

A car crashed into a metal construction fence in the centre of Torrevieja on Friday morning. The incident occurred at around 9.45am on Friday when, according to eyewitnesses, a car travelling along Calle Fuensanta failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with another car that was travelling in the correct manner down Calle Pedro Lorca. The impact caused the second car to crash through the metal fencing, taking with it a large motorbike which was parked at the time. Several units of the Local Police were dispatched to the scene, cutting off traffic while the municipal tow truck cleared the street. Those involved in the accident, two middle-aged men, were thankfully uninjured.

At least 10 dead as Spanish Nano-satellite launched to fishing boat sinks help fight climate change A Spanish fishing boat carrying 24 people sank in the early hours of last Tuesday hundreds of miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, leaving at least 10 people dead and 11 missing, according to Canadian and Spanish maritime officials. Three people were rescued by another fishing boat that was nearby when the 164foot vessel, called the Villa de Pitanxo, sank, Spain’s maritime rescue service said in a statement. The survivors had made it into a life raft, which also held the bodies of four members of the crew. The bodies of three other crew members were later found in the water. An additional three bodies were found later in the day, according to Spanish maritime officials. The boat had been based in the Galician town of Marín, in northwestern Spain. María Ramallo, the Mayor, told reporters that the sinking was “a tragedy on a scale that we cannot remember.” Search and rescue crews had encountered rough water, reduced visibility and windy conditions at sea, Spanish officials said. The boat was carrying 16 Spaniards, five Peruvians and

three Ghanaians, according to the rescue service. The boat sank about 280 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Spanish officials said on Twitter. The search, which continued on Wednesday, included a plane, two helicopters, a Canadian ship, a Spanish fishing vessel and two Portuguese fishing vessels, Spanish officials said. The Halifax rescue centre said it received an emergency signal just after midnight on Tuesday from the Villa de Pitanxo. The signal indicated the boat was east of St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. A helicopter, another aircraft and several vessels were deployed. Commander Owens said rescuers remained hopeful

that they could still find crew members alive. They may have managed to put on survival suits before the ship sank or found debris or a lifeboat to cling to, he said. “We never rule out the human spirit,” he said. “People find ways to survive.” The fishing boat itself has not been found, he said. In Spain, officials and relatives of the crew members were anxious for more updates about the rescue efforts. “We remain distressed by the terrible news out of Canada about the sinking of the Villa de Pitanxo,” Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the regional president of Galicia, said on Twitter. “We are making available to the government and the ship-owner all the help they need.”

A second nano-satellite is set to be launched into space from Catalunya this autumn, with a budget of €1.7 million, as part of the ongoing fight against climate change. It will collect data from ‘watching’ the earth in a range of spectral bands, giving scientists the information they need to monitor global warming, its process and effects, work out what to do to slow it down, and how to minimise the damage by devising ways of adapting to the more extreme weather and harsher conditions that come with it. The first extra-small satellite – weighing around 4.2 kilos, or about the equivalent of just over four litre cartons of milk, or a small adult cat – went up in March 2021, primarily to support the 5G rollout and provide internet and mobile phone coverage to all of Catalunya’s residential areas, however remote. It also serves the purpose of data collation for tackling climate change, and so far, the satellite baptised ‘Enxaneta’ has managed to collect a huge corpus of information of vital help to the wine and vineyard

industries. Once again, the second satellite, which is double the size of Enxaneta, will go up from the world’s first-ever space base – the Cosmodrome in Baykonur, Kazakhstan, and will cost more than three-and-a-half times the €574,000 spent on the initial launch 11 months ago. As yet unnamed, the nanosatellite will monitor information relating to droughts, rivers and air temperatures, says deputy

president of Catalunya regional government, Jordi Puigneró. These data might be able to track severe weather fronts, such as the infamous ‘Storm Gloria’ of early 2020, shortly before they strike, whilst working out their direction and behaviour, allowing authorities to take useful decisions proactively. Catalunya wants to ‘continue progressing in the new space

economy’, having set aside €7.4m this year towards developing it, believing it could present ‘great job opportunities’. “Just a few years ago, nobody would have predicted that the government of Catalunya would be immersed in the nanosatellite space race, because we’d always thought that this was the prerogative of large States and huge space agencies,” admits Puigneró. “Not only have we sent up one nano-satellite, but we’re about to send up a second one. “We’re a small region but one that’s always looking to the future.” C a t a l u ny a’s NewSpace strategy was launched in 2020, with the idea of sending up to six nano-satellites into orbit using 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), which would keep costs down. These satellites will all be under 10 kilos – roughly the weight of a standard airline cabin bag – and are designed to hover in shallow orbit, around two kilometres above the earth’s atmosphere, rather than 32 kilometres, as is the norm for a standard-sized, and much more expensive, satellite.

Two glasses of wine exceeds daily sugar limit Adults can exceed their recommended daily limit of sugar by drinking just two glasses of wine, experts have warned. Drinks can also be packed with calories and in some cases two glasses of wine can contain more calories than a hamburger. The Alcohol Health Alliance said that product labelling on alcoholic drinks was “woefully inadequate” as it published new analysis on popular wines. It looked at the calorie and sugar content of 30 bottles of red, white, rose, fruit and sparkling wines. The alliance, which represents more than 60 health organisations, said that there is a wide variation of sugar and calories across different wines but they said that with this information missing from most labels consumers are “being kept in the dark” about what they are drinking. It said that guidelines recommend that adults should consume no more than 30g of so-called free sugars per day but it is possible to reach almost this entire amount by drinking two medium glasses of wine. The AHA analysis suggested that many of the most sugarpacked wines were the ones which had the lowest strength

of alcohol. It said that with no legal requirement to display sugar content on alcohol labels, drinkers may opt for a lowerstrength alcohol thinking that this is a healthier option but could unwittingly be upping their daily sugar intake. Did you know a standard glass of wine can contain as many calories as a piece of chocolate, and a pint of lager has about the same calorie count as a packet of crisps? The analysis also examined the calories in wine. The AHA said that just two medium-sized glasses of the most calorific wines analysed contain more calories than a McDonald’s hamburger. Wines with high calorie content also tended to be higher strength drinks.

Smart data to predict tourism trends in the region The new website of the Valencian Institute of Tourism Technologies (Invattur) allows the user to access tourism data and studies to make comparisons, market segmentation and predict the type of tourist who will visit a destination at any given time. The director of Tourist Intelligence of Turisme Comunitat Valenciana, Mario Villar, said the main novelty of the project is the experimentation with artificial intelligence “which lead us to be able to predict which tourists are going to come, of what type and which are the products they are most interested in.” All the information, experiments and studies carried out by Invattur will be available through the web so that the user can share and take advantage of them. The regional secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, has considered data analysis for destinations “essential” when making decisions and focusing future promotion and marketing campaigns, something that the new Smart Data Office tool allows. “Transforming data and information into knowledge is the objective and the great qualitative leap in the sector because that helps us make the right decisions to be more efficient when planning actions,” he added. Colomer said “the digital transformation is the basis for understanding the future of tourism”.

The AHA said that none of the 30 products examined in the study displayed sugar content on their labels – information which is required for all nonalcoholic drinks. Calorie content was only displayed on 20 percent of the labels examined. Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chairman of the Alcohol Health Alliance said: “Alcohol’s current exemption from food and drink labelling rules is absurd. Shoppers who buy milk or orange juice have sugar content and nutritional information right at their fingertips. “But this information is not required when it comes to alcohol – a product not just fuelling obesity but with widespread health harms and linked to seven types of cancer.”

New survey identifies 11 ‘food crimes’ against Italian cuisine A survey by international research data and analytics group YouGov has identified 11 ‘food crimes’ committed against Italian food by the rest of the world. Researchers back in 2018 found that Italian cuisine is the world’s most popular and now, this latest survey shows that people elsewhere in the world are treating Italian food in a way that will not make mama happy! Researchers compiled a list of 19 ways in which foreigners have been accused of abusing Italian food, and asked people in 17 countries and territories (including Italy) whether they were acceptable or unacceptable. Of the list of 19, Italians see no problem with four: eating pizza for lunch (+89); having Bolognese sauce with spaghetti (+81); eating pizza with a fork rather than your hands (+69); and having meatballs with spaghetti (+58). EXPLAINER: With YouGov surveys, positive numbers mean more people say it as acceptable than unacceptable, while negative numbers mean more people consider it unacceptable than acceptable. Another four are divisive to Italians: having risotto as an appetiser or side dish (+2); putting oil in the water you are cooking your pasta in (+1); snapping dry spaghetti before boiling it (-1); and adding plain pasta to a plate or bowl and then adding the sauce afterwards (-4). All of these are generally considered ok everywhere else in the world, however, although Spaniards (-18) and online Mexicans (-17) tend to be against

snapping dry spaghetti prior to boiling. However, 11 culinary concepts from the list are judged by Italians to be crimes against their national cuisine. The most distressing abuse of Italian food is having ketchup with pasta, scoring -82 overall. This is one of only two food crimes from the list that Americans also say is unacceptable (-48), with Spaniards similarly against (-46). However, in 11 of the countries and regions surveyed, people tend to say that pasta and ketchup is perfectly fine, with online Indonesians (+76) and Hong Kongers (+79) especially enthusiastic. Putting pasta in cold water and then boiling it also drives a knife through Italians’ hearts at -71, making it the second biggest violation of Italian cuisine. This proves to be the most disdained practice around the world as well, with just online Chinese (+16) and Hong Konger (+31) respondents noticeably likely to say they think doing so is acceptable. Americans again tend to see this as a crime against Italian food (-14), although it is far more likely to bother people in Spain (-41), France (-39) and Germany (-39). Having pineapple on a pizza – the basis for the infamous ‘Hawaiian’ pizza – is the third worst thing you can do to the national cuisine, according to Italians (-63). Only in France, however, do people tend to disagree (-15). Having pasta as a side dish bothers the fourth most Italians (-55) but marks

the worst thing to Italians that people in all other countries and regions surveyed say is ok. Poles are the least likely among the rest of the world to say it is acceptable, but even here it scores +26 overall. The French are the most enthusiastic about having pasta as a plat d’accompagnement, at +74. Other practices that are frowned upon in Italy but generally accepted everywhere else are rinsing or cooling off cooked pasta under cold water; drinking cappuccino after an Italian meal; and having garlic bread with a pasta meal. Young and old Italians at odds over

some food rules The results show shifting generational attitudes within Italy towards national culinary practices. The biggest comes with drinking cappuccino after a meal, something which 18-24 year old Italians tend to think is fine (+24), but which older age groups – and especially the over 55s (-36) – say is unacceptable. Young Italians are also substantially more likely than their older peers to say that having garlic bread with a pasta meal, adding plain pasta to a plate or bowl and then adding the sauce afterwards, and having risotto as an appetiser or side dish are ok.

Top Superfoods for 2022 This year’s list of the top superfoods places a clear emphasis on plant-based foods that have a myriad of nutritional benefits. The focus is on health and immunity in the next decade, and the increased popularity of plant-based eating, nutrient-dense options will be an important part of consumer diets, as we embrace food as medicine to help prevent disease. In addition, there will likely be an increased interest in functional foods containing ingredients that provide health benefits beyond their nutrient profile. Fermented foods Fermented foods such as yogurt and kimchi took the top spot, likely because of their immune- and gut-boosting benefits. According to researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine, a diet rich in fermented foods increases microbiome diversity and improves immune responses. Blueberries These fruits are small but mighty! Blueberries are an excellent source of antioxidants, which helps protect your cells against damage from free radicals, and may help reduce your risk for cancer, heart

disease, and other conditions. Additionally, antioxidants are also important for hair growth, strong nails, and healthy skin. Seeds Seeds, like chia seeds and hemp seeds, are nutritional powerhouses. Chia seeds, in particular, are packed with antioxidants, minerals, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids. Per a 2016 study, the specific antioxidants in chia seeds may have anti-cancer

properties and have protective effects on the heart and liver. Chia seeds are also a great source of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which means they can improve bone health. Exotic fruit While there’s certainly nothing

wrong with standard fruits like apples and oranges, 2022 is the year of exotic fruits such as golden berries and açaí. The latter fruit, which is a popular ingredient in healthy smoothie bowls, is loaded with antioxidants, may improve cholesterol levels, and according to a 2014 study, can protect your brain from damage as you get older. Avocados The popular toast topper is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. In addition to being an excellent source of heart-healthy fats, avocados are loaded with antioxidants and other nutrients that help with cholesterol, bone density, skincare, eye health, and more. If you’re not a fan of avocado toast, blend an avocado in a smoothie instead. Ancient grains The term ancient grains encompasses several grains that have stayed unchanged for thousands of years. Examples include amaranth, teff, farro, and quinoa. Quinoa is probably one of the most popular ancient grains, and is known for being loaded with fibre and containing all nine essential amino acids. The grain is also a solid source of vitamins B6 and C.

Prefer black coffee? It could be genetic If you prefer your coffee black, then you probably prefer your chocolate dark according to new research which has identified genetic basis for such preferences. A preference for black coffee or dark chocolate could be an indicator of a genetic trait that may offer you a boost toward good health, according to caffeine researcher Marilyn Cornelis, an associate professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Studies find moderate amounts of black coffee -- between 3 and 5 cups daily -- has been shown to lower the risk of certain diseases, including Parkinson’s, heart diseases, Type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer. But those benefits are likely to be more pronounced if the coffee is free of all of the milks, sugars and other fattening flavourings we tend to add. “We know there’s growing evidence

I could not get hold of my cousin in England for months, and over Christmas. We used to correspond on email, but suddenly the communications stopped. She has a difficult life, she is a single mother with a teenage daughter who I know is putting her through her paces. Lockdown did not help, as her

suggesting there’s a beneficial impact of coffee consumption on health. But reading between the lines, anyone advising someone to consume coffee would typically advise them to consume black coffee due to the difference between consuming black coffee and coffee with milk and sugar,” Cornelis said. “One is naturally calorie free. The second can add possibly hundreds of calories to your coffee, and the health benefits could be quite different,” she added. In prior research, Cornelis and her team discovered that a genetic variant may contribute to why some people enjoy numerous cups of coffee a day, while others do not. “People with the gene metabolize caffeine faster, so the stimulating effects wear off faster, and they need to drink more coffee,” she said. “This could explain why some

mother (my Aunt) had recently gone in to a care home, and has dementia and has not settled well. Eventually after sending lots of email, I got a one-line email from her to say she was ok, but did not want to talk much these days. She suffers from depression, and I know she can go into her shell at times. I am worried for her. I am too far

individuals seem to be fine consuming a lot more coffee relative to someone else who might get jitters or become very anxious,” she added. In a new study published in Nature Scientific Reports, Cornelis analyzed more precise types of coffee drinkers, separating black coffee lovers from cream and sugar (or more) lovers. “We found coffee drinkers with the genetic variant that reflects a faster metabolism of caffeine prefer bitter, black coffee,” Cornelis said. “We also found the same genetic variant in people who prefer plain tea over sweetened, and bitter, dark chocolate over the more mellow milk chocolate.” However, Cornelis and her team don’t think the preference has anything to do with the taste of plain black coffee or tea. Instead, she said, people with this gene prefer black coffee and tea because they associate the bitter flavor with the boost in mental alertness they

crave from caffeine. “Our interpretation is these people equate caffeine’s natural bitterness with a psycho-stimulation effect,” Cornelis said. “They learn to associate bitterness with caffeine and the boost they feel. We are seeing a learned effect.” The same applies to the preference of dark over milk chocolate, she added. “When they think of caffeine, they think of a bitter taste, so they also enjoy dark chocolate,” Cornelis said. “It’s possible these people are just very sensitive to the effects of caffeine and they also have that learned behavior with other bitter foods.” Dark chocolate contains some caffeine, but much more of a compound called theobromine, a known caffeinerelated stimulant of the nervous system. But more is not better when it comes to theobromine, studies find -- higher doses can increase heart rate and ruin mood.

Dark chocolate is also full of calories, so keeping consumption down is good for the waistline. Still, studies find that even a small bite of dark chocolate a day can contribute to heart health and reduce the risk of diabetes. That’s probably because cocoa contains plenty of flavanols -epicatechin and catechin -- antioxidant compounds that are known to improve blood flow. Other foods that contain flavanols include green, oolong and black teas; red wine; kale; onions; berries; citrus fruits and soybeans. Future studies will try to tackle the genetic preference for other bitter foods, Cornelis said, “which are generally linked to more health benefits.” “It might show that individuals who are genetically predisposed to consume more coffee are also engaged in other potentially healthy behaviours,” she said.

Vaccinated people less likely to develop long covid A new study claims that people who are vaccinated are less likely to develop long Covid, even if they catch the virus. A rapid review by the UK’s Health Security Agency looked at available evidence to date from 15 studies around the world. The findings, revealed this week, suggest that while some who are fully vaccinated do catch Covid, vaccines reduce infection risk and illness, including symptoms like fatigue. Not only that but if unvaccinated people who catch Covid and get symptoms of long Covid, do better if they then get vaccinated. Some of the studies in the review looked at the effect of vaccinations given before infection and found: • People with Covid who

received two doses of the Pfizer, AstraZeneca or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Janssen vaccine, were about half as likely as people who received one dose or were unvaccinated to develop long-Covid symptoms lasting more than 28 days • Vaccine effectiveness against most longCovid symptoms was highest in people aged 60 years and over Other studies that looked at the effects of vaccines in people who already had long-Covid symptoms found that vaccines may improve rather than worsen Covid symptoms, either immediately or over several weeks. Long Covid symptoms, such as fatigue, shortness of breath and muscle or joint pain can last for more than four weeks after initial infection. People who received two doses of a vaccine against Covid were less likely to experience this or had the symptoms for a shorter time. Dr Mary Ramsay, Head

of Immunisation at the UKHSA, said: “These studies add to the potential benefits of receiving a full course of the Covid-19 vaccination. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from serious symptoms when you get infected and may also help to reduce the longer-term impact. “For most people, symptoms of long Covid are short-lived and resolve over time. But for some, symptoms can be more severe and disrupting to their daily lives. If you’re experiencing unusual symptoms, particularly for longer than four weeks after infection, you should consider contacting your GP.”

What Types of Vehicles Can I Drive? If you look at the back of your driving licence you will see a list of vehicle categories determined by both a letter and a pictogram indicating the type of vehicle referred to. The license also displays dates next to those categories for which you are permitted to drive, in the columns headed 10, 11 and 12, which detail validity from and to dates and any observations, respectively. The vast majority of drivers in Spain have a category “B” licence, which means they are certified as qualified to drive a normal passenger car but being qualified in that category also allows you to drive some other vehicles. As a category B licence holder, you are permitted to drive specially designed passenger cars, for private use, ranging from a small urban car, an SUV, minivan, or sports car. There is no limitation to the type of vehicle, so long as it is registered as a private car, but there are limitations to the physical characteristics. Namely, a private car must be equal to or less than 3,500 kg in weight and can have a maximum of nine seats, including the driver. The vehicle can only be driven for private and leisure use and not for any commercial gain, whether that be for business or carrying passengers in exchange for cash or goods. In the case of vans, you can drive any van in which either passengers, goods or both can be transported, whether that vehicle is approved as a private or commercial vehicle, so long as it has a maximum weight equal to or less than 3,500 kg and no more than nine seats including the driver. For both cars and vans you can also attach a trailer with a category B licence, provided the total combined weight of the vehicle and trailer do not exceed the maximum weight permitted by the technical specifications of the vehicle. In the case of passenger cars, there are two options allowed under a category B licence. Firstly, a passenger vehicle

of up to up to 3,500 kg and a trailer not exceeding 750 kg, representing a maximum combined weight of 4,250 kg. Or a passenger car (up to 3,500 kg) and a trailer exceeding 750 kg, provided that the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the joint between car and trailer exceeds 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg, it is necessary to take two specific practical tests which covers vehicle manoeuvres and dealing with traffic. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the joint between car and trailer also exceeds 4,250 kg, it is necessary to obtain a BE category certification, which enables a passenger car to tow up to 7,000 kg, spread over 3,500 kg maximum weight for the car and 3,500 kg maximum weight for the trailer. This requires both a theoretical test and two practical tests, one of manoeuvres and the other in traffic. However, in addition to what we might consider to be the normal vehicles one would expect to be able to drive with a category B licence, but there are others. You are permitted to drive some twowheeled vehicles with the category B qualification. Having the “B” category automatically qualifies licence holders for the AM category. That permits drivers to ride small mopeds with engines smaller than 50cc or an electric motor, provided that the vehicle has a maximum limited speed of 45 kilometres per hour and they are only ridden on urban roads. After holding your category B licence for a period of 3 years, you are automatically upgraded to be allowed to drive vehicles requiring the A1 category, which permits you to drive small motorcycles up to 125 cc and with a maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp). However, you must be aware that this is only the case in Spain. This automatic

classification is not effective in other European countries without obtaining the A1 classification qualification separately. That is why, even if your license is issued in Spain, you will not see the validity dates filled in on the back of the licence unless you have undergone specific examinations. In the event of a category B licence holder riding a 125cc motorbike and getting stopped to have your details checked at the roadside, the Guardia Civil traffic officers will refer to the dates of your category B validation to ensure you qualify. With the category B license you are permitted to drive three-wheeled bikes or tricycles, provided that two of the three wheels are on the same axle. There are no limitations in terms of power, the only condition is that the manufacturer has had the vehicle approved as a tricycle and not as a three-wheeled motorcycle. The difference is that the tricycle requires specific approval and must have certain standard characteristics including a parking brake, minimum track width and lighting specific to this type of vehicle. If the vehicle does not meet these characteristics, then they are subject to the conditions of licencing for motorcycles. A motorcycle with a sidecar for example is not classed as a tricycle and is governed by motorcycle licencing requirements. All microcars and vehicles which have been approved as quads can be driven with the category B licence. This includes two categories of light quadricycle (with a maximum weight of 350 kg and maximum power of 4kW) and normal quads that can reach up to 550 kg maximum and up to 15 kW (20 hp). The four-wheel buggy type of vehicle of more than 15 kW can also be driven, so long as they are classed as passenger cars. You can also drive quads or ATVs, whether of leisure or agricultural type and regardless of engine size or power.

The DGT launches an information campaign to explain the main novelties of the Traffic and road Safety law

The changes will come into force on March 21 and among them are the increase to 6 loss points in case of using the mobile phone while driving, to 4 for not using the seat belt or helmet, and the disappearance of the 20 kilometre per hour margin when overtaking on conventional roads.

The General Directorate of Traffic this week launched a new information campaign with the aim of explaining the main changes in the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety that will come into force on 21 March. Under the slogan “New times. New

rules”, the campaign, which can be seen in digital media, the written press, social networks with the hashtag #NuevosTiemposNuevasNormas and heard on radio between February 15 and March 21, aims to publicise the most important novelties of this law that tries to adapt to the current reality of drivers. The media campaign will focus on seven of these developments with the aim of clearly explaining the most important changes introduced. The campaign explains that, for example, from now on using the mobile phone while driving will subtract 6 points from our points credit instead of 3, in the same way that the penalty for not using the seat belt, helmet or corresponding child restraint system, all without an increase in the economic penalty. In addition, the time required to elapse without committing offences for a driver to recover their initial balance of points is unified to 2 years. Emphasis is also placed on the suppression of the 20kilometre per hour margin to overtake on conventional roads that existed until now and on other measures aimed at the cyclist community, such as the obligation, on roads with more than one lane in each direction, to change lanes when overtaking cyclists or mopeds or the prohibition of stopping or parking in bike lanes or cycle paths. But as the reform of the Law has been broader and more articles have been modified, not only referring to the permit by points, a specific page has been created within the DGT website where the most important changes can be consulted.

This is the fourth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt, passed away three years ago but fellow members and friends, Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin, have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory. This was our second visit this season to our favourite course Altorreal, the course was in good condition but the tee boxes did need some attention. Once again, the weather was excellent for golf with the temperature at a pleasant 23 degrees and pure sun, so the order of the day was shorts. We played Tony’s favourite format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points. Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition and the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup were Chris Houghton, Martin Gadney, Steve Day and Mo Chaplin with 79 points, runners up were Andy Godfrey, Steve

Another weekend of Premier League football has been and gone, physically untouched by Storm Eunice but with the weather leaving all kinds of pun opportunities in her wake. Hurricane Harry netted a brace at the Etihad, just like the scriptwriters demanded. It rained goals for Man United at Elland Road. Cyclone Salah got his 150th Liverpool goal in their battering of Norwich at Anfield. And, of course, Whirlwind Weghorst got off the mark in Burnley’s 3-0 win over Brighton. Up in Manchester, where the weather conditions were considered ‘mild for the end of February’, Antonio Conte outwitted Peppy G and condemned City to their first Premier League defeat since October. Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte defended with all the strength of a creaky gate with a broken latch being battered by 90mph winds as Kane, Son and new-boy Kulusevski whistled past them on occasion. Naturally, City had more of the ball and a silly amount of touches in Tottenham’s box. Even facing a hapless Hugo in nets for Spurs didn’t guarantee three points for City and there was something that just meant Kane was going to deliver. Tottenham’s main man has not been as prolific as usual this season, but judge a goalscorer on against whom and when he scores - City did a better job of chasing Kane in the summer than they did on Saturday. The defeat leaves the door ajar for King Kloppo’s Liverpool. Somewhat amusingly, they trailed Norwich at Anfield and it oh-so-briefly looked like the Canaries were going to get something valuable out of the game. That was until Sadio Mane added a clever little overhead finish to the AFCON trophy in his February swag bag. Then, Alisson lumped it up to Mo Salah who swivelled the hips, stuck the Norwich defence on the floor

and tucked home number 150 for the Reds - the second-fastest Liverpool player to achieve this tally. City will most likely go on and win the league but it’s not as over as everyone was saying a couple of weeks ago, that’s for sure. Chelsea, a team tipped by some fools (yes, me) for the title, were incredibly average at Selhurst Park against Patrick Vieira’s Palace. Romelu Lukaku continues to look nothing like a near €100m investment and the World Champions needed a late, late volley by Hakim Ziyech to nick three points. Manchester United widened the gap between them and West Ham to the size of the 02 Arena roof with a 4-2 win over Leeds at Elland Road. United led 2-0 and all looked harmonious - Harry Maguire even scored when the ball seemed to just hit his head and go in. Ronaldo even joined in the celebrations - see, no rift, honest. But, early into the second-half Leeds’ disorganised chaos had got the scores level - if only they’d considered shutting up shop and being grateful

with a point, eh? West Ham had got the weekend underway with a 1-1 draw with Newcastle - a much-improved team who won’t be going down. Eddie Howe’s men were without Wilson, Saint Max and Kieran Trippier and probably should have won. Burnley, scorers of about three goals all season, found the back of Brighton’s net three times in the same 90 minutes at the Amex. Wout Weghorst got his first and helped Dyche’s men off the bottom of the Premier League on goal difference. Burnley’s goal difference is -9 after 22 games - Norwich’s a mere -38. Uncle Roy was called to Vicarage Road to keep them up and Saturday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa could well be a turning point. The Hornets look more organised than they’ve looked all season and whilst they won’t win any bonus points for pretty football, they’ll compete in all the games they need to compete in between now and the end of the campaign. The gap between them and Everton is now only four points after

Abbey Angling NEIL MCBERNIE AT THE DOUBLE On Tuesday the 15th of February yet again we fished or winter venue at El Bosquet. High winds made the fishing a little tricky but the weights in the main were quite good. Winner on the day was the local legend that is Neil McBernie, I would back him against anyone on this venue and he really does produce a master class week in week out. Key to his success is without doubt is very accurate feeding with a catapult whilst holding a long pole. He invariable fishes against the far back with maggots at this time of year

and usually up in the water. This he did once again from peg 7 to catch 26.24kg of carp and mullet. Pictured is the famed end peg 7 at El Bosquet. Second was another top angler inn Harry Billing. Drawn on unfancied peg 24 on the old back channel he caught carp and mullet on bread for 22.18kg. In third place was mere mortal Bill Cannon who caught carp mainly on the method feeder from fancied peg 1 for 13.06kg. Other section winners were Jackie Breslin peg 4 4.78kg, Paul Burton 6.28kg peg 27, John Waples 10.58kg peg 35 and league leader, Richard Smith with 11.86kg from peg 39.

The pairs event was won by Harry and John Waypals. Rods N Reels The following day we fished the same venue with the same result. Winner on the day from peg 26 was Neil McBernie with 16.46kg. 2nd was Bill Reade from peg 5 with 16kg and 3rd was Steve Higgins from peg 7 with 10.02kg. The pairs event was won by Bill and John Waples. Next week Abbey visit the River Segura at Murcia and a good match is expected. For further details please visit www.abbeyangling.es

Southampton were the latest team to find the Toffees rolling over and letting their tummies being tickled away from home. Lampard is going to need time to get his new side playing the way he wants - but the problem is, that relegation zone is worryingly close for them and they are one of the teams heading very much in that direction. Not as quickly as Brentford, however. Arsenal starlets Emile SmithRowe and Bukayo Saka were the match-winners once again as Arteta’s lot heaped another defeat on Thomas Frank’s side. Was Christian Eriksen expecting a relegation battle when he signed that contract? If Brendan Rodgers is looking to make it easier for a bigger club to appoint him in the summer, continuing to oversee Leicester City’s demise is certainly going to remove the issue of hefty compensation being paid to release him from his contract. Two outside-of-the-box pearlers from Wolves saw off the Foxes this time well, at least they didn’t concede from a set-piece.
