Torrevieja says NO to war

torrevieja hosted an anti war rally on sunday afternoon when around two thousand people filled the Plaza de la constitución to express their outrage at russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. the rally was arranged by the association of Ukrainians of torrevieja with around 3000 Ukrainian citizens living permanently in the town. Banners were held aloft reading ‘the

russian army kills our children’, ‘stop war’ and ‘We want peace for Ukraine’. earlier in the week, the mayor of torrevieja eduardo dolón and councillor for international residents Gitte Lund thomsen met with representatives of both the Ukrainian and russian communities in the town. the mayor expressed his support for and solidarity with

the Ukrainian people here. meeting with the president of the Ukrainian association, natalia Zhezhnyauska, the mayor said that the town hall will be made available ‘for any need you have’. Zhezhnyauska expressed her concerns about the devastating situation unfolding in her home country. it is expected that over the next few days thousands of exiled Ukrainians will arrive in spain and their permits to stay in spain will need to be processed. With this in mind, torrevieja city council contacted the national Police corps to ask that they “expedite the procedures of these people”. in addition, the town hall is going to provide food and medicine to the Ukrainian association for its transport to the Ukraine, as natalia Zhezhnyauska had requested. the mayor and the councillor for international residents also met with the representatives of the two russian associations of torrevieja, tatiana semenova (GLoBUs) and sergei mogilenskii and Peter andreusevich

(mir odin), who also expressed their concern about the current situation. they all shared the same sentiment, saying that they hope that “as soon as possible the end of this unreason, as Continued on page 3

well as full support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people and, especially, for all those resident of this country who live in peace and harmony with them in our city.” there were obvious signs of emotion at sunday’s rally, with many people in tears as they held aloft the Ukranian flag and banners bearing anti war slogans. natalia Zhezhnyavska, read a statement in which she asked for the end of the war in the Ukrainian territory. the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, also spoke, expressing the solidarity of the town hall with the Ukrainian community. meanwhile, local priest Fr Pedro Payá made an appeal for peace and led the crowd in a prayer as everyone recited the our Father together in spanish. there was a discreet Guardia civil presence at the rally, but the event – which lasted from around twelve noon until after half past one – passed off peacefully. other local mayors were

also in attendance to express their support for the Ukraine. the banners held by those attending

the rally were in a variety of languages, Ukrainian, spanish and mostly english. While most of the banners called for peace, others bore messages directly aimed at Vladimir Putin with his image made to look like that of hitler and slogans such as “aggressor, invader and liar.” other banners called for international aid, with slogans such as: “don’t leave us alone”; “disconnect russia from the sWiFt system”, the platform that connects banking entities around the world and allows international transactions; or “Let’s close the airspace.” it is important to note the large amount of russian residents also participating in the rally, expressing their stance against the invasion of Ukraine.

today, tuesday 1st march is Panacake day, but do you know why we celebrate it in the first place? From what it means to eat pancakes to the difference between crêpes and pancakes, here’s your shrove tuesday low down. Pancake day falls on what we call shrove tuesday. Pancake day is always 47 days prior to easter, meaning the dates vary year on year. shrove tuesday is the day that precedes ash Wednesday and therefore the feast before beginning Lent. Lent is the 40 days that lead up to easter and is traditionally used as a time for fasting. so, it makes sense we stuff our faces with pancakes before this starts. shrove tuesday is meant to be used as the last chance to use up any eggs and fats before embarking on Lent. clearing the kitchen cupboards of things like eggs, milk and sugar removes any temptations during the fasting period. and with those ingredients what else would you make but a pancake or a crepe? the main difference between crêpes and pancakes is that crêpes are much thinner and usually larger than traditional fluffy pancakes. this is because when making pancakes, you tend to use a raising agent like baking powder, and when making crêpes, you do not. since crêpes tend to be thinner, they’re also more likely to become crispier around the edges. When making pancakes, you’ll also notice that the batter is much thicker than crêpe batter. the best thing about pancakes is that they’re so versatile. You can top your pancakes - or crêpes - with pretty much

anything you like. From strawberries and cream to lemon and sugar, to bananas, blueberries and even cream cheese, there’s a whole host of delicious toppings suitable for Pancake day. toppings don’t just have to be sweet either. some people argue that savoury pancakes taste even better than lots of sweet ones. You can treat them as a fluffy quesadilla and load them with chicken, cheese and spring onions or even avocado and feta. it’s not just Brits who are partial to a pancake or two. around the world, there are lots of pancake varieties. in eastern europe a pancake is known as a blini but is smaller in size. While in places like Greece and cyprus they’re referred to as, tiganites. in fact the first recorded pancake came from ancient Greece and derives from a poet who described warm pancakes in one of his writings. in austria, the czech republic, and slovakia pancakes are either called palatschinke, palačinka or palacinka. and in Japan, they’re called okonomiyaki.

alicante-elche airport is calling for more police officers in order to reduce queues and the number of missed flights for UK tourists who now have to get their passport stamped. the Union claims that the number of officers at the airport, which acts as the gate-way to the costa Blanca, has not increased in line with the growing number of passengers. representatives are concerned that a return to pre-pandemic travel levels this summer will result in serious delays for British travellers if the issue isn’t resolved.

Short circuit gang arrested Guardia civil carried out a large coordinated raid operation this week across both the alicante and murcia provinces. investigators had been tracking a criminal gang suspected of committing a string of crimes in gambling shops across the area. so far, a dozen crimes (mainly, suspected theft involving the manipulation of gaming machines) have been identified and attributed to the gang. the six members of the criminal group, described by sources as all quite young, are charged with belonging to a criminal group, robbery with force, theft and drug trafficking. Guardia civil began an investigation in december 2021, aimed at getting to the bottom of several robberies committed in ‘salones de juego’ also known as gambling halls or betting shops. officers first verified that this group of young people had accessed the gambling halls, initially in torre Pacheco (murcia), sometimes posing as other people to avoid being linked to the criminal activity. once inside, they started a game and, when the result was not favourable (a bet placed without a win awarded) they caused short circuits that prompted the machine to return the bet and they would have another go until a win was awarded. once they accrued a considerable amount of money, between 5,000 and 9,000 euros,

they would collect the prizes from the cashier, but in amounts of around 1000 euro at a time so as not to raise suspicions. investigators were also able to confirm that the gang had an extensive criminal history, were based in torre Pacheco and had what Guardia civil described as “considerable geographical mobility when carrying out the criminal activity” with crimes linked to the gang taking place across murcia and alicante, including torrevieja. according to investigators, companies that manage these roulette-type machines have pre installed software to prevent thefts of this type. even so, thanks to the persistence and expertise of the gang, they found a way around the issue. Using a screwdriver, they would pry open the gaming screens and pull out wires to shortcircuit the machinery. once all the necessary

evidence was obtained, the members of the gang were identified and their places of residence located. over the last few days, Guardia civil rolled out an operation involving over fifty officers. With judicial authorization, the officers entered and searched four homes in roldán and Lo Ferro in torre Pacheco, where the six members of the criminal group were arrested and effects related to criminal activity were seized. officers seized more than 100 grams of marijuana buds ready for imminent distribution, cash, mobile phones, high-end watches, technological devices and documentation related to criminal activity. information obtained during the investigation has made it possible to link, so far, a dozen such ‘robberies’ to the gang, in which it is estimated that cash was stolen in excess of 70,000 euros.

The first point of contact for most buyers is through the website – if your property looks inviting from the pictures it will certainly attract more attention. Try to de-clutter and de-personalise as best you can for when the photographs are taken. 2. For Sale Sign – We can offer you the very best in terms of advertising

but a for sale sign is another major selling tool. If a potential buyer is not actively looking at a website/shop window they may never know that your property is for sale. Whatever you do, do not let people through the door without an appointment made with ourselves – we can vouch for the clients who we bring round to visit the property and have the relevant insurance cover should an accident occur on your property. 3. Be Ready – Ensure all papers and certificates are in place (and valid!). In Spain, certain things can take time so make sure you don’t risk losing a buyer because you are chasing up paperwork. We have our in-house architect who can offer their services. 4. Let us do The Selling – Allow us to

carry out the property viewings. Our sales staff are experts in their field and know exactly what the buyers want. Allow for the clients to feel relaxed and to have a good look around. 5. The Price is Right – As a company that has been selling property in Spain since 2001 we can provide you with an accurate and up-to-date market appraisal. It is important to list the property at a realistic price, research suggests that the longer a property is on the market then the less the property will fetch. It’s important to get the right balance to achieve the best possible price – always allow for some room for negotiation but not too much that it will over-price the property. Guardia civil have arrested two men aged 58 and 52 in albatera for defrauding three fruit and vegetable producers from san Fulgencio and Guardamar with the purchase of more than 54 tons of oranges that they acquired and did not pay for. the 54,162 kilos of oranges delivered to the alleged swindlers are valued at 7,019 euros. a special unit to prevent thefts from growers is based in the torrevieja barracks of the Guardia civil. a producer from san Fulgencio filed a complaint there at the end of January after discovering he had been scammed. according to the information collected by investigators, the scammers were taking advantage of trust built by previous smaller transactions with the farmers. once they had their confidence, they agreed

to buy larger quantities and pay later. this is how they are alleged to have swindled a man in san Fulgencio and two other producers from Guardamar del segura who also filed a complaint. those investigated are believed to have paid a small deposit but once they harvested the oranges they postponed payment, offering a series of excuses and ended up disappearing. the victims of the scam also trusted in the buyers because the commercial contracts were signed through an alicante based company. however, when they discovered the deception, the growers went to the supposed address of the company and found that there was no operation there. Guardia civil verified that the denounced company already had a history of non-payment to suppliers. those arrested made statements and were released with charges.

Costco opening in Malaga Popular budget hypermarket costco has expanded its offering in spain with plans for a new branch in malaga – which is just close enough for locals to combine into a weekend shopping and sightseeing break. costco Wholesale is already open in Getafe and Las rozas (Greater madrid region), sestao (Basque country) and sevilla, and offers reduced-price groceries and brown and white goods. it even sells car and bike tyres, toys, books, cosmetics, office equipment, catering equipment and furniture. the branch on the costa del sol will not be ready for trade for a while yet, though: it will be based on the málaga nostrum industrial estate after a major renovation job taking around two years, according to Javier marín, managing director of Bogaris retail, the development company, which owns the building.

popular routes including the Palacios, monumental, murales de san isidro, a Walk with Loaces and a Walk with Velázquez will all be available this month. remember that the routes are totally free, but with limited places so it is necessary to reserve your place at: www.orihuelaturistica.es.

initial plans were to open a major shopping and leisure centre with costco at its centre, but the Plaza mayor complex beat the company to it, so Bogaris retail is now working on a more ‘boutique-style project’, marín explains. costco is unique insofar as anyone who shops there has to be a member – the idea being that the subscription fee will easily be earned back in a fairly short time through the cheaper price tags, if club members use the store often enough. options, found on costco.es/ membership/signup, will include the affiliation Gold star scheme at €30 plus iVa (value-added tax, currently 21 percent) per year, which – if rates do not change, will be a gross figure of €36.30 or just over €3 per month. companies benefit from the reduced membership price, via the affiliation Business, of €25 plus iVa per year €30.25 at current iVa rates.

What to do if you test positive With recent changes to health advice in the Valencian community, there is some confusion over what to do if you test positive for covid. the increase in infections and the prevelance of the omicron variant has caused the ministry for health and the autonomous region to change the protocols required for positive cases. despite decreases in many areas, the total number of positives continues to increase in the Valencian community. health authorities here have changed the advice to those who test positive. according guidelines:

to

the

latest

Quarantine if you are positive the quarantine period for asymptomatic or mild positive cases is reduced to 7 days, provided that the person has not shown symptoms over the last three days. For those with severe disease or immunosuppression, a minimum isolation period of 21 days is advised. Inform close contacts confirmed cases should inform their close contacts of their positive test result. in the event that they present symptoms of coronavirus or have tested positive on an antigen test, they should call the covid hotline for alicante, Valencia and castellón: 900 300

555. Who are close contacts? now, close contacts of confirmed cases will only include those who live with them and those contacts who are especially vulnerable (people with high risk health conditions or those over 70 years of age without a booster dose, their caregivers, pregnant women, health or socio-health personnel). close contacts must quarantine for 7 days if they are not fully vaccinated or are immunocompromised. even if they are exempt from quarantine, during the 10 days after the last contact, they should take extreme precautions and reduce social interactions as much as possible by constantly wearing a mask. they should also avoid contact with vulnerable people.

Take precautions and reduce encounters after the 7-day isolation period and up to 10 days after the onset of symptoms (or the date of diagnosis in asymptomatic cases), positive cases should exercise extreme caution and reduce social interactions as much as possible by constantly wearing the mask. specifically, contact with vulnerable people should be avoided. PCRs for some close contacts For close contacts, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, priority will be given to performing Pcr tests on vulnerable people (over 70 years of age, immunosuppressed or pregnant women) and people who care for them (professionals or family members) as well as health or socio-health personnel.

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner chorus Financial chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. a number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the UK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to Brexit. there is a lot of confusion in this area so i will do my best to share what we know so far. Before Brexit, the spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the dGs and cnmV – allowed UK regulated entities to advise those of us living in spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When Britain left the eU, those rights were removed for UK based firms. in preparation for Brexit spain published article 13 of the royal decree Law (which you can read here: http://www.cnmv.es/Portal/ Brexit/FaQ-rdL.aspx?lang=en). Within this, the cnmV have confirmed that, according to article

13(3) of the rdL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in spain while domiciled in the United Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. in more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your UK iFa, they could have continued to provide service to you until 30th June 2021. this extension was granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your iFa to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in spain. i wanted to further clarify this with the Fca, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the eea need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can

provide services to spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of spanish law.” With this response the Fca are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the spanish regulator’s position in terms of advising those of us who live in spain. so where does this leave you if you still have a UK iFa? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly. it may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the eU and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in spain. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. the Fca have set incredibly high standards for UK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent and appropriate. You should expect that standard to continue here in spain. in simple terms, transparency means

your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. i would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. remember, many products and funds in spain still pay advisers non-disclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the UK many years ago. this can make your overall fees incredibly high. one big clue is that if a product has a tie-in, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your investment value. You should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. of course, if you really want to be sure, then speak to a chorus Financial adviser for a recommendation – this is always free and without pressure or obligation, so you can explore your options and make the best decision for you. call chorus Financial today on +34 965 641 163, emailinfo@chorusfinancial. es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP in what became something of a financial market lottery, investors were forced to react first to the prospect of sanctions on russia, then to the perceived toothless of those that did appear, then to the reality of russian troops entering Ukraine, then to more widespread sanctions and, most recently, to renewed relief at the limited economic threat posed by the sanctions. exchange rates were whip-sawed, “risky” currencies and safe havens alike. sterling came out of it relatively badly with an average loss of 0.8%, perhaps partly because the UK prime minister was a prominent cheerleader for sanctions. Until thursday morning’s invasion, investors could be reasonably satisfied with the UK economic data. rightmove reported that asking prices for residential property jumped 2.3% in February and were 9.5% higher on the year. the provisional UK purchasing managers’ indices beat forecast, with manufacturing unchanged on the month at 57.3 and services at an eightmonth high of 60.8. in Britain, as in many other countries, the relaxation of covid restrictions made life easier for face-to-face service providers. invasions aside, the only obvious stumbling blocks for sterling were comments by Bank of england officials. deputy Governor dave

ramsden and chief economist huw Pill both downplayed the idea of rate increases coming thick and fast this year. EURO had it not been for its proximity to Ukraine and russia, the eU’s single currency might have behaved more like a safe haven. in the event, the eUr more resembled a not-quite-sure, having just as difficult a week as the GBP. it lost an average of 0.7% and gave up one and a half Us cents. even before the invasion of Ukraine, investors were less than enthusiastic about the currency, sensing that the eU’s member nations are far from united in their response to russia’s action. european central Bank board member isabel schnabel’s speech on thursday reflected, of necessity, “the situation predating the war”, but she did ad-lib to reassure investors that “in such times of extreme uncertainty, central banks need to be a source of confidence and a reliable anchor for the economy”. the eurozone economic statistics came and went without creating any major ripple. a 5.1% headline print for eurozone inflation was a record high in the history of the currency, but it was in line with the provisional reading and almost unchanged on the month. national rates ranged from France’s 3.3% to 11% in estonia and 12.3% in Lithuania.

Four injured in Orihuela car crash

Police were called to the scene of an accident on sunday, when a car collided with a tree near to orihuela cemetery. Four people were travelling in the vehicle and all were injured in the accident. the emergency services

call centre also mobilised two Basic Life support (sVB) and a samU ambulance to the scene. the injured were men between the ages of 16 and 46 years of age. a 16-yearold had multiple injuries and was rushed to the Vega Baja

hospital in orihuela in the samU ambulance. another minor aged 16 was transferred due to cuts and bruises in the sVB ambulance. the other two injured; a 46-year-old man and an 18-year-old boy were also taken to hospital in a sVB.

Puig calls Russian invasion ‘terrible blow’

Ximo Puig, President of the Valencian community has called russia’s invasion of the Ukraine a `terrible blow’ to the region’s post-pandemic economic recovery given that the region has an ‘important commercial relationship’ with both russia and the Ukraine. the president said:”this attack by russia is absolutely intolerable.” he added that the region, alongside spain and the broader european Union will do everything possible to stop the ‘unjust’ situation. russian tourism has been a staple part of the economy especially in Benidorm and the wider costa Blanca area for many years, with a strong second home and holiday home market. the other concern is the effect any on-going conflict will have on the export of fruits to both of the countries. the province of castellon also relies

heavily the import of Ukrainian clay to support its substantial ceramics industry. despite his woes, he was keen to promise ‘support and affection’ for the 21,000 Ukrainian nationals who call the Valencian community home. during the press conference he also told reporters that he was worried about continued rises in raw materials, gas and fuel prices. the conflict has already pushed the gas price up, although it has still yet to hit the pre-christmas high of 160 euros/ mWh. With the fighting not likely to end any time soon and with sanctions in place gas prices are likely to remain high in the short to medium term. roughly 25 percent of spain’s electricity is generated through plants that use gas to generate electricity pushing the price to the consumer above 240 euros/ mWh, a price reversing all the

Ximo Puig

reductions that has been seen this year. the minister of the ecological transition, teresa ribera, has said that the energy supply is “guaranteed” , but at the same time warned of rising prices with most households likely to see a sharp increase in their electricity costs again. she called on the eU for “new and powerful” tools to deal with this escalation.

Orihuela to create new Motorhome parks

orihuela plans to open two new dedicated motorhome parking area, that can be used for overnight stays in the Palmeral. the mayor of orihuela, emilio Bascuñana and the councillor for the environment, dámaso aparicio met at the location of the new facility to announce the steps being taken to ensure people who tour the area in a motorhome can spend the night in their vehicles. Without fear of being fined or moved on. councillor aparicio explained that his department is in talks with the ministry of culture and

heritage so that the adaptation and landscaping of the space can get underway. the plot has a surface area of 3,500 m2, which means that it will have a capacity to house 20 motorhomes. this motorhome area would be at the foot of the mountains, near the Black Wall and the red Wall, highly recognised by hikers and mountaineers internationally for it beauty and links to nature. a second solely dedicated facility for motorhomes is also planned for the area of soto i-6 near to the Urban Gardens.

there are currently 119 facilities where tourists can spend the night with their motorhomes in the entire Valencian community and when these two areas become a reality it will out orihuela on the map for campers and open up the area to more tourists. the mayor of orihuela, emilio Bascuñana, has stated that these projects will be “the icing on the cake so that motorhomes users can have an adequate space with all the services they need and so increase the tourist options in the municipality”.

Pensioner-friendly banking Banks nationwide will soon be required by law to put systems in place that guarantee everyone can use their services, even the elderly, technologically-illiterate and those with disabilities or diversities. the spanish government has released details of new procedures all high-street banks will be obliged to follow to ensure ‘inclusiveness’ – so that everyone can access this basic service that is as essential to daily living as electricity, water, telecommunications and transport. the driving force behind the changes is 78-year-old carlos san Juan, from Valencia and his online petition, which has gathered close to 700,000 signatures. the retired doctor says he does use the internet, but his knowledge of it is fairly basic and his main concern is other people his age and above who cannot, or do not have a connection, as well as those who cannot afford a computer or a bang-up-to-date smartPhone compatible with banking apps. after a local high-street bank attempted to charge him for withdrawing money over the counter rather than from a cashpoint, carlos’ now-viral response was: “i’m elderly, not stupid.” the national government’s reaction to the ‘elderly uprising’ has been swift and complete,

and acts as proof that it is, indeed, listening to the people it represents. six-monthly analyses and reports will be drawn up by the Financial inclusion observatory to make certain that all banks comply, and that the new measures are working, as well as making recommendations for improvements. there are several new legal obligations that banks must meet. they must ensure that a caller is always able to speak to a person, and not standard recorded messages. they must also offer free training on how to use the relevant on-line banking system for the customer’s account. the training will also cover fraud prevention – another general fear among those lessfamiliar with digital means. even the most basic advice, such as how to recognise if an email purporting to be from your bank is genuine, about not clicking on links within emails, and what type of phone call is likely to be an attempted con rather than genuine customer service will put many minds at rest and prevent the more trusting among the public from falling victim to swindlers. simplified versions of cashpoints, websites and apps will also be made available, with all the above being taught through workshops, courses as one-off or regular

sessions, making use of local social centres or pensioners’ organisations such as the U3a. No queuing for hours Better banking hours are also covered in the new decree. these specifically address the need for people to pay bills. currently, most banks only offer this service one day a week, and normally within a set, limited time slot – from 10am to 12noon on a tuesday is common – meaning that if this clashes with a customer’s GP or hospital appointment or they are unwell on that day, they have to wait a whole week to pay their bills. those who do not use debit or credit cards, or cannot use cashpoints will now be able to pay over the counter on any working day during normal opening hours. and face-to-face customer service must be available, as a minimum, between 9am and 2pm monday to Friday, except public holidays. there will also be priority queuing for the over 65s. customers of pension age, and with disabilities, will be placed in a priority queue and attended to first whenever there is a backlog in the branch, which will be welcome news for those of restricted mobility or the very elderly who are physically incapable of standing for an hour or so waiting to be seen.

Local elections matter ‘the consequences of many nonspanish eU residents failing to vote in local government elections is blatantly evident in orihuela costa’, explains Peter houghton, President of Pioc. he explains that over recent years the area has failed to secure any councillors. the effects of this have been disastrous as the costa continues to be without most of the essential services considered fundamental to spanish life, despite the population of 33,227 residents, virtually equal to the city of orihuela. When it comes to locally elected representatives, the small villages surrounding orihuela return more councillors than the whole of the coastal region. this situation has resulted in most having far more public services than the coast, despite their meagre populations. the main reason why orihuela costa has so few public services and amenities, is that politically, it doesn’t really exist in the eyes of orihuela council, who treat it as a seaside resort for tourists, not a town where permanent residents live. in the 2019 local election, of 7,300 registered voters, only 2,100 actually turned out to cast their ballot. this is why orihuela costa does not have representatives working for the residents living on the coast. consequently, most public spending goes to orihuela city and the surrounding villages, to the detriment

of coastal residents. Without sufficient councillors representing this large population, the needs of the very diverse cultures have been marginalised, ignored and completely neglected. Unfortunately, the number of people not registered on the Padron, who permanently live on the coast, is still far too high, resulting in the loss of

approximately 15 million euros from central and regional Governments, funding that would add considerably to providing the services we need. Furthermore, if those people did register on the Padron and exercise their right to vote, there would be the opportunity to elect our own councillors, to support and improve the services on the coast. they would make a huge difference to the amenities that we desperately need. Peter said: “there are currently a

number of organisations in orihuela costa working to achieve much of that described above, all with the common goal of electing coastal representatives to the council. “therefore, this appeal is an olive branch to all those associations, groups and businesses, to come and work with us for that common goal. the Pioc believes that by acting together we could achieve at least 3 councillors. “the objectives are not the ideal goal of independence but those of building the bridge over the aP7, a second health centre, a cultural centre, cemetery, day care centre to accommodate dementia / alzheimers support, along with mental health and disability issues, a mother’s & toddlers Group and a much needed Youth club would make a huge difference to the local community “the important thing right now is to improve the lives of the residents by working as one for the good and benefit of the orihuela costa. By running together as a single, combined, unit we could reverse many of the cuts that we have suffered in recent years as we work to ensure that future municipal governments are more responsive to the needs and concerns of the orihuela costa.”

Ceramics, yoga and dance UK Nationals advised to seek help and workshops begin this week advice from local immigration support Torrevieja’s Councillor for the Elderly, Inmaculada Montesinos, together with the deputy manager of the water company AGAMED, Gemma Cruz, presented three workshops that are being run under the sponsorship of AGAMED in conjunction with Torrevieja town hall. The objective of these workshops is the health and well-being of elderly people and, as the councillor explained, “making communities more friendly and sustainable.” These workshops will take place at the Municipal Leisure Center (CMO), at the San Pascual Home for the Elderly, and at the La Mata Multipurpose Center, with the participation of 220 people. The activities that will take place are: - Ceramics Workshop: This will be taught at the San Pascual Home for the Third Age on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to

12:00 p.m. The course will have a total duration of 84 hours and will take place between March 1 and May 20. - Yoga Workshop: This will also take place at the San Pascual Home for the Third Age on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The workshop will have a total duration of 48 hours and will be held from March 1 to May 31, distributed in 24 sessions of 2 hours each. - Dance Workshop: Sessions will be held at the Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and on Fridays at the La Mata Multipurpose Social Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The workshop will last 84 hours and will take place between March 1 and May 20. Registration can be carried out at Department of the Elderly, located on Calle Maldonado, nº 5.

offices in the Comunidad Valenciana Help and advice for UK Nationals available from local immigration support offices The British Consulate in Alicante held a workshop with local immigration support offices to find out what support is available for UK Nationals who still need to sort out their residency paperwork after Brexit. The workshop was also attended by the Red Cross and CEPAIM, an association in Alicante that offers immigration advice over the phone. Most town halls in the Comunidad Valenciana have what is known as a PANGEA office, which is funded by regional government to help immigrants who need advice on how to get legal residency in Spain or how to access services. The offices are staffed by social workers and often have a legal advisor expert in Spanish immigration law. They offer clear, impartial advice and guidance to those who seek their help, but they are not able to submit residency applications on behalf of customers. There is a huge volume of British nationals living in the Comunidad Valenciana – in 2020 approximately 104,000 British nationals were registered as residents (i.e. with a green residency certificate) and the latest official figure is now over 110,000. However, not all new residency applicants have been successful and,

whilst many unsuccessful applicants have since returned to the UK, the Consulate believes that there are many who are still living in Spain without paperwork. Also, at the last count, only 38% of British nationals in the Comunidad Valenciana had swapped their green residency certificate for a new photo ID TIE card. Whilst it is not obligatory to make the swap, both the British and Spanish authorities recommend it as it will

make administrative processes easier and the new card clearly shows the holder’s status as beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement. Sarah-Jane Morris, the British Consul in Alicante, who opened the workshop said “It now is over a year since the end of the transition period. Any British national living in Spain without their residency paperwork in order is going

to need specialist advice and support to legalise their situation. For those living in the Comunidad Valenciana, the PANGEA offices are where you should go for free, impartial advice on what your rights and options are. It was great to understand their work better through this workshop and build closer ties. For those British nationals who still have a green residency certificate, I strongly urge you to exchange it for a TIE as soon as possible – there are appointments in Alicante every day. It is a straightforward process, the TIE is more durable than the previous green certificate and it clearly shows you are a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement. We are increasingly seeing that the Spanish authorities prefer British nationals have this document.” You can find the list of PANGEA offices for the Comunidada Valenciana on this website: https://inclusio.gva.es/es/web/ igualdad-diversidad/xarxa-doficines-pangea. Information about how to become a resident in Spain under the Withdrawal Agreement and how to exchange a green certificate for a TIE can be found at: https://www. inclusion.gob.es/ficheros/brexit/guia_ brexit_2020_en.pdf For general information and advice about living in Spain, visit gov.uk/ livinginspain or follow us on facebook at facebook.com/britsinspain

Spain’s opposition leader bows out Pablo Casado, leader of Spain’s centre-right opposition People’s Party, appeared to bid farewell to parliament last Wednesday amid rising speculation that he would bow to pressure to resign, deepening turmoil in the PP that could benefit the far right. The crisis worsened recently after Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the popular regional PP leader of the capital Madrid, accused top party brass of secretly gathering alleged evidence of corruption against her and her entrepreneur brother over a contract to buy COVID face masks. Ayuso has denied any wrongdoing, and the anticorruption prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the case. Casado, 41, told law-makers he hoped the government would continue to serve “the general public interest”, and then departed the chamber quickly on his own. Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wished his rival the best, and struck down speculation that he would call a snap election to strengthen the hand of his minority government. Casado was quick to condemn Ayuso’s “poor example” over the face mask contract, then backpedalled and sought to cancel the

investigation. Turmoil in the PP, a party that has traditionally dominated Spanish politics, has generated large protests by supporters of the party’s feuding factions in Madrid and is likely to play into the hands of the country’s far-right Vox party, already the third largest force in parliament. Jose Luis Ayllon, who was chief of staff under former PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, said Casado could resign on Wednesday evening or stay on until a new party president could be elected at a PP congress in April - an option he deemed “better, (so as) not to confuse the electorate”.

No Resignation However, despite the speculation, there was no resignation and the president of the PP will remain in office until the extraordinary congress that will take place on 2nd and 3rd April. A meeting he will not attend, according to what he has agreed with the party heads after a marathon meeting of almost five hours in Genoa. Pablo Casado put in writing that he will not attend that appointment, thus leaving the way clear for Alberto Nunez Feijoo – leader of the northwest Galicia region - who has been expressly asked to appear and who is tipped to take the top spot.

Brit drug lord finally jailed after retrial in Alicante Brit drug lord Brian Charrington has been found guilty by a court in Alicante and finally jailed for 11 years for smuggling more than 7 million euros worth of cocaine into Altea in 2013. The drug smugglers initial trial and conviction in 2018 was overturned by the supreme Court, with the new hearing taking place last year. The former Middlesbrough car dealer, an associate of notorious gangster Curtis Warren, has been ordered by the Alicante Court to pay a fine of 15.3 million euros, which is more than double the value of the smuggled drugs. He will also have to pay a fine for money laundering of 631, 491 euros. Charrington’s criminal biography is mapped out on a lengthy Wikipedia page he is rumoured to have updated himself as a hobby and includes his 1980s exploits with Chris Warren, a 1992 arrest, being a police informant, amassing a 20m pound fortune and being

re-homed in Australia before moving to Spain. He’s has served time in French and German prisons for drug smuggling. Police in Spain held Charrington after a longrunning investigation sparked by a tip-off from French police revealing he and Robert were running a drugs-smuggling operation and bringing cocaine into Europe from Venezuela. Their luxury villas in Calpe near Benidorm on the Costa Blanca were among a number of homes raided by police on July 4 2013. He allegedly tried to erase information he had chalked on a blackboard about cocaine shipments and prices during the raid on his home, prosecutors claimed. Police revealed at the time of the operation they had seized around 200 kilos of cocaine worth £10m at another apartment in Albir near Benidorm. The Class A drug was said to have been smuggled into Spain

through the nearby port of Altea. Britain’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), Venezuelan police and a regional 18-member-state police organisation called Ameripol were also involved. Spanish police described Charrington after his 2013 arrest in Spain as “one of the ten most investigated criminals” by European police forces and “leader of an international gang of drugs smugglers.”

Benidorm and Orihuela top for Brits A survey carried out by property search portal Spain-Holiday has named Benidorm and Orihuela the most British towns in Spain. The survey ranked towns of

more than 50,000 inhabitants based on the number of registered British nationals and the ratio of British restaurants, bars and shops per person.

Benidorm hit the top spot, followed by Orihuela, pipping Costa del Sol hotspots such as Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Marbella to the post.

Spanish researcher claims wine is not just empty calories Are you cutting back on the vino tinto to save calories? One food scientist argues that perhaps you shouldn’t. Dr Rosa Lamuela Raventos claims that moderate wine intake during meals may help boost metabolism and support weight loss. Dr. Lamuela-Raventos is the associate professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Barcelona and member of the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition. She presented her support for moderate wine consumption at “Wine and Weight Management: Is It Possible?” a virtual event hosted by Wine in Moderation, a wine-focused corporate social responsibility program. In an interview after the virtual event, Lamuela-Raventos explained the prevailing evidence that moderate wine consumption may benefit heart health and how recent findings have informed her theory that wine can help burn extra calories and promote weight loss. One piece of cardiovascular research Lamuela-Raventos drew on was a paper published in the British Journal of Nutrition, which showed support for the Mediterranean diet’s believed benefits for cardiovascular health. The observational study analyzed data from the large-

scale Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED) trial, which included 7,500 Spanish participants observed between 2003 to 2011 to study the long-term effects of the Mediterranean diet. Researchers found that moderate red wine intake was associated with a decreased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes), mainly by reducing the risk of having an abnormal waist circumference, high blood pressure and cholesterol. A separate study from Brazil also showed that drinking wine with meals was related to a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome, and that drinking beer was associated with a greater prevalence. Lamuela-Raventos also highlighted what she thinks is the biggest misconception in wine: “empty calories,” that is, that wine contains little to no nutritional value. With growing obesity rates and the misconstrued idea of “empty calories” in wine, LamuelaRaventos says certain diets have pushed the alcoholic beverage out of weight-loss plans, which is a mistake. “It is true that calories mainly come from ethanol, however, wine is a rich source of potassium, and it also contains

other minerals and is one of the main sources of polyphenols in the Mediterranean diet,” said Lamuela-Raventos, “[One glass of wine] contains approximately 125 calories per serving, however, people are not considering that wine may counteract these calories burning them, due to the polyphenolic content.” One of the mechanisms that helps support weight loss is thermogenesis, or the thermogenic effect. It is a metabolic process by which humans burn calories in order to generate heat. LamuelaRaventos argues that it happens when we drink wine during meals. She suggests polyphenols such as resveratrol help the body increase the amount of brown tissue, which is a type of body fat that turns food into heat and helps wine drinkers burn more calories.

Marmite facts you’ll love or hate According to the guys behind all the Marmite advertising campaigns – you either love it or hate it. But it’s one of those products that if you do love it, then you really love it. However, not many people actually know the history behind this tasty treat. Marmite is a savoury spread, which was originally invented by German scientist Justus von Liebig in 1902. The scientist invented it in the UK when he discovered that brewers’ leftover yeast could be concentrated, bottled and eaten. Bass Brewery was the original providers of the yeast for Marmite. In 1912, it was discovered that Marmite was a great source of vitamin B, so the British troops fighting in World War I were issued jars of the stuff as part of their rations. And during the 1930s, English scientist, Lucy Wills successfully used Marmite to treat anaemia in mill workers in Bombay, India, thanks to the folic acid in it. Marmite was used to treat malnutrition by Suriya-Mal workers during the 1934–5 malaria epidemic in Sri Lanka. Marmite is jam-packed with vitamins, so Marmite is good for you. It’s stuffed full of B vitamins, including, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine, as well as magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron and selenium, all of which are essential for good health. If you’re trying to watch your weight, Marmite is very low in calories. In each recommended 8g portion of Marmite, there’s

only 22 calories and less than 0.5g of fat. Saying all that, Marmite is pretty salty, so it’s always worth keeping that in mind. The main ingredients of Marmite are glutamic acid-rich yeast extract, salt, vegetable extract, spice extracts and celery extracts, although the precise recipe is a trade secret. Marmite is vegan, halal but not gluten-free as it’s made from the yeast leftover from beer brewing, and there’s gluten in that. Seeing as Marmite lovers go absolutely bonkers for anything with the tasty yeast extract in it, food producers have been jumping on the Marmite bandwagon for years now. Those

smart boffins at Marmite had the brainwave of mixing two of the nation’s favourite toast toppers, and have created Marmite peanut butter. You can get smooth and crunch marmite peanut butter these days. Chilli Marmite is also a thing, as is Marmite Beer if you need something to wash that spicy Marmite down with. M&S is also taking advantage of the fact that marmite lovers are always on the lookout for more ways to eat their favourite yeasty spread. So if your popping back to the UK check out Marmite butter (£3) and cream cheese (£2.50) to take your bagels up a notch. There are also Marmite and cheese twists in the M&S bakery section.

Spangles fundraiser a huge success Spangles has an association going back over ten years, performing alongside Motown singer, Barrington. Having heard the sad news he had been in an induced coma for 2.5 months, and of course unable to earn a living, Spangles agreed they must do something. ”Barrington is a caring and generous soul who helps local charities whenever he can. He loves our style of singing: a cappella four part harmony, and it was now our turn to give him something back” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. Spangles held a special concert in Sucina’s Restaurante La Mario for Barrington, with a raffle and a silent auction. They have already exceeded their initial target of 1000 Euros and are very happy with the 1,290 Euros which has been raised so far for their friend; and donations are still coming in! Of course Spangles couldn’t have done it without the support of local businesses: Stu Diamond and Jo Dimberline at Diamond Health and Fitness, Áglae by Raquel Paños, The Salon, The Paul Carpenter Golf Academy, Café JoJo at Avellano, Margaret Reilly (Spangles cakemaker extraordinaire), Paul Hunt at Golf Buggy Solutions, Restaurante La Mario and

Murcia Golf Homes Musical Director, Valerie Lynch says. “We are so grateful to our audience and to all the people who donated prizes and money. There is an old African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” and that’s so true in this case. Everyone pulled together to help Barrington in his hour of need”. Their dear friend has finally woken up from his coma but, after three months in hospital, he has lost weight and muscle tone. He is having to learn to walk again. The road to recovery will be a long and arduous one but we will be there to help. Everyone agrees, Spangles is

looking forward to the day when they can sing together again. If you would like to donate to the fund, you can do so via PayPal to info@spangelschorus. com Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.15 am to 1.15 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www. spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com

4 simple steps to avoid blackheads Blackheads. Few are immune to these complexion pests and with the rise of TikTok, every week there are more and more obscure ‘hacks’ for their removal. From ripping them out with a pore strip, extracting them with a sharp extraction tool or even dragging them out with dental floss, the hacks are endless. But rest assured, every time you try one, a dermatologist loses its wings.

– such as glycolic or its gentler sister, lactic – which will help to chemically slough away lingering dead skin cells, preventing congestion from occurring in the first place.

The best ways to get rid of blackheads

2. Try salicylic acid Salicylic acid is another great ally in the fight against blackheads. While alpha-hydroxy-acids work on the surface of the skin, exfoliating dead skin cells and surface grime, salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy-acid, meaning it has the power to penetrate your pores and dissolve oil from within.

1. Upgrade your exfoliator Look for a product that contains an alpha-hydroxy-acid

3. Change your cleanser Your daily cleanser could be contributing to the development

What exactly are blackheads? Simply put, blackheads are a mixture of oil and dead skin that has settled into a pore and oxidised, which is what creates the black appearance.

of blackheads. Anything that causes clogging needs to go. A milk or clay cleanser can clean without leaving behind a residue on the skin’s surface. 4. Switch your moisturiser Skin blighted by blackheads still needs moisture and your choice of moisturiser is crucial. Choose a light cream – preferably one that contains niacinamide, as it has the ability to regulate oil production.

Fix a nail chip in seconds

Next time you’re dealing with a nicked nail, try this trick from manicurist Deborah Lippmann (she polishes Reese Witherspoon’s nails): Dip the pad of your index finger in nail varnish remover, then gently rub it over the chip toward the tip of your nail to “smooth out the ridge left from the nick,” she says. “Then dab your polish in the bare spot to fill it in, or do a thin coat of the colour all over the nail. Either way, give it a minute to dry, then brush on a top coat.” Done and done.

Drink Driving Myths Exposed Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of vehicle accidents in Spain. According to figures from the General Directorate of Traffic, one in three deceased drivers tested positive for alcohol and other drugs. For this reason, the DGT continues with its awareness campaign #SiConducesPonteACero so that drivers do not get behind the wheel if they have consumed a single drop of alcohol. In one of their latest tweets, they talk about the false belief of some tricks to hide alcohol and other drugs in the controls. “There are no tricks that are worth trying to avoid #drug controls (drink water, coffee, lemon, etc. The presence of drugs in saliva does not disappear and it does not disappear from the blood,” they explain. And they conclude with a phrase that sums it all up: “It only works to NOT consume”. Here, we explain some of the myths that do not work to hide alcohol and other drugs. A study carried out by FESVIAL (Spanish Foundation for Road Safety) points out the great lack of knowledge of the operation of the procedure that is followed in a control of drugs to drivers. Proof of this is that “40% of drivers, according to this study, believe that the analysis is done on expired air and not saliva,” they explain. This ignorance influences false beliefs to elude controls. These are the data offered by the DGT study on these tricks. - Wait 1-2 hours It doesn’t work. It is only effective

if the wait is very long and is around 5-6 hours, as a standard mean time, which would be the time in which the body eliminates the drugs at the levels measured by the test. - Consume coffee It doesn’t work. The ingestion of coffee ‘fooled’ the first ethylometers several decades ago, but it does not produce any effect on the concentration of the drug in the saliva. - Drinking water It doesn’t work. There is no scientific evidence to support it. Drinking water does not dilute the presence of drug in saliva. - Play sports / sweat It doesn’t work. Saliva tests – used in road checks – are not affected by sweating or playing sports. Therefore, it doesn’t work.

- eat lemons It doesn’t work. Eating lemons does not produce any alteration in the concentration of the drug in the saliva, although it does stimulate its production. - Drink energy drinks It doesn’t work and it’s dangerous. The high concentrations of stimulants in these drinks can cause additive effects. It does not dilute the drug concentration and there are cases of sudden death described. - Sleep for a while It doesn’t work. Sleep, by itself, does not eliminate the amount of drug present in the body. Only if it is a sleep of more than five hours would it produce an effect, not because of the fact of sleeping, but because of the time elapsed.

Results of Latest Heavy Vehicle Campaign Released

Details of the last special surveillance and control campaign, which for a week focused on vehicles used for the transport of goods and people, were released this week. The campaign was organised by the RoadPol association at a European level under the name Operation Truck&Bus and developed in Spain by the Directorate General for Traffic. On this occasion, officers from the Guardia Civil Traffic Group have controlled a total of 19,039 vehicles, of which 5,112 truck drivers and 124 bus drivers were reported for not complying with the precepts of the regulations. In addition, 60 trucks were immobilised for different reasons attributed to the driver or the vehicle and were prevented from continuing on the road for safety reasons. The number of drivers who were driving with alcohol or other psychotropic substances stands out, when they were required by the agents of the traffic group to carry out the appropriate tests. Specifically, 14 truck drivers were reported for testing positive for alcohol and 44 for other drugs. These data reflect a higher number of positives than in the campaign carried out in February of last year, where the figure was 15 positives for drugs and 9 positives for alcohol. None of the bus drivers who

were tested were positive for these substances. As usual, the most numerous offences (55%) were those caused by excessive driving hours. On this occasion, 2,468 drivers were reported for offences related to driving times (2,442 trucks and 26 buses) and 420 for issues related to the tachograph (398 trucks and 22 buses). Also important is the number of infractions related to documentation, both of the vehicle and the driver, which means that 1,026 drivers (949 of

trucks and 77 of buses) circulated with administrative irregularities, as well as the number of sanctions imposed for infractions related to the Technical Inspection (573). In addition, 674 truck drivers were reported for excess weight or improper load arrangement and 142 for violations related to seat belts and other devices (131 truck users and 11 bus users). Regarding speed, 185 drivers were detected driving at speeds higher than those allowed (175 trucks and 10 buses).

Studio32 dress to impress Established almost 10 years ago in 2013, Studio32 Musical Theatre Company, is set to present its latest show ‘Guys and Dolls’ at the Cardenal Beluga Theatre, San Fulgencio in May. Andy Kirkwood, Press Officer showed us around the costumes and props department to offer a flavour of what’s in store for the forthcoming show. Andy pulled out a bowler hat, from a plethora of items in the costumes room, saying, “The London made fine fur felt, hand-made bowler hat was donated after being used at Masonic evenings, it’s valued at over £200”. An evening dress made in India 60 years ago, valued at £100, will be just one of the dresses to be worn in ‘Guys and Dolls’ explained Susan Zillah Wilson, Studio32 Artistic Director,. Rails of dresses and menswear as well as lots of dinner suits are amongst items donated by charity shops, with many of the costumes donated by former Theatre group Rascals in 2020. Lockdown confirmed to me that I don’t have any true friends, but someone told me I am insincere and treat people badly; something that came as quite a shock to me as I considered I was well liked, but as no one stayed in touch with me from my local pub, I am starting to wonder if it is true.

The company who have performed the Musicals Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Mack and Mabel, Chicago and Anything Goes, are still looking for actors, singers, dancers and backstage assistants. “We need more men for Guys and Dolls as chorus men and crap shooters. Friendship should not be one-sided. You say that no one kept in touch with you during Lockdown, but did you contact any of your former friends? Perhaps you need to make more of an effort as a potential friend. Have you thought of inviting friends over; either individually or otherwise (when we are able to mix more). Last Gasp Win For Monte Los Montesinos v Sporting Dolores Last Saturday’s encounter between these two teams from the middle of the pack, was widely predicted by the terrace pundits to be a close one. But, it was a battling performance, with not a little skill as well, that saw the Reds snatch all three points at the end. The gathering, sullen clouds and brisk wind gave the Cauldron more of an “Sunday morning at the park pitches” feel than the usual balmy weather we have become accustomed to and the swirling conditions were to have a bearing on both team’s approach to the game. Both sides showed good intent though, although Dolores, in their striking green kit, seemed comfortable to do battle in the middle third, rather than sally forth in any meaningful way. Indeed, Monte could have opened their account early doors, if goal-bound strike by Arturo wasn’t hacked away off the line at the last second. Still, a large crowd were well entertained by some excellent football by both sides, albeit, with so little real action in the final thirds of the pitch. Monte continues to look steady at the back with Gocu and Victor looking solid as ever, and busy enough in the middle, with Pipo playing a key role. . Despite this, both sides reached the half way mark, level. HT:- CD Montesinos 0 – 0 Sporting Dolores CF “A” The murky looking skies continued to threaten and Dolores took advantage

of the unpredictable gusts in their favour with several long-rangepot shots, which saw Sergio in the Reds goal relieved when one mighty effort bounced off to the top of the bar. The war of attrition continued in the middle of the park with both sides making limited inroads into each other’s stubborn defensive lines. A flurry of substitutions by Dolores on 75 minutes saw them roll the dice, possibly trying to nick a win from a finely balanced match or, more likely, to replace some tired legs. Monte too, threw on reinforcements in the shape of Kevin up front and Adrian in the middle of the park, but it was an earlier sub, the perpetually industrious Pato, who broke the deadlock, late on, when he was johnnyon-th-spot, snatching a late winner, lashing home on the right of Dolores’ box for his sixth goal of the season so far. Surrounded by relieved and jubilant team-mates, he received their adulation and an unfortunate booking for stripping his shirt off. Dolores, on the other hand, looked deflated and crestfallen, they might have felt that they deserved something from a game they had tried hard not to lose. A further clock-eating substitution for Monte, saw Maccan take to the field to shore up the middle, but for Dolores, the game was both up … and over. FT:- CD Montesinos 1 – 0 Sporting Dolores CF “A”

Pretty much ever since 2003, we’ve wondered what would happen to Chelsea if Roman ever decided to hand the club over to someone else. And now we know - not a lot will change. Abramovich officially announced he was passing the ‘stewardship and care’ over to the trustees of the Chelsea charitable Foundation on Saturday night. Whilst we can guess at the reasons, it would be no more than speculation -and, in all honesty, not a lot will change with the multibillionaire passing on the day-to-day running of the club to people he has trusted with the day-to-day running of his football club for the last 20 years. Roman still owns Chelsea, will still fund Chelsea and is not looking to sell Chelsea. He just won’t be making any decisions (officially), OK? The League Cup Final wasn’t completely overshadowed by the announcement - Chelsea and Liverpool went German-toe-toGerman-toe at Wembley, the initial 90 minutes packed full of incredible saves (had the double stop by Mendy been made in an FA Cup Final in the 70s or 80s we’d still be talking about it now and his second one in the last five minutes wasn’t too shabby either - let alone the injury-time stop), terrible misses (looking at you Mason and you Mo) and disallowed goals (Virgil was interfering, despite King Klopp’s protestations). And the penalty shoot out was a classic that will be remembered - you could only be a Chelsea fan if you don’t find the tactic of bringing on Kepa because he is better at saving penalties, only to see him let 11 in and then blaze his over the bar, just a little worthy of a smirk. Kepa and penalty shootouts at Wembley - not good

Abbey Angling On Tuesday the 22nd of February we made the second visit of the year to The Rio Segura at Murcia Town centre. Thirteen anglers attended to fish the 8th round of the Abbey Angling Cup and the match was fished in lovely warm conditions with virtually no wind. Drawing a good peg is the first part of trying to win a match and that is exactly what I did when I drew the end upstream peg 13. This was situated about half way between the two bridges. I fished the method feeder virtually all day with bread, corn or wafters and caught 12 carp for 16.12kg which was enough to win the match.

Fans of Leeds United were in mourning on Sunday - and not just because they shipped another four goals, this time at home to Tottenham. Marcelo Bielsa is no longer their jefe and the mythical manager has delivered his last murderball session at Beren Cross. On one hand, it is easy to admire Bielsa and his absolute commitment to playing the way Leeds play regardless of the opposition. Not many teams would try and go toe-to-toe with much better sides week in week out. The fact that if they did, they’d probably get stuffed 4-0, 6-0, 5-2, whatever too almost feels irrelevant because of the aura that surrounds Marcelo. On the other hand, the Argentine is a stubborn fool who still called the sky blue even when all the evidence that it was green suggested maybe he should change his beliefs. Against Tottenham, it was pretty clear what was going to happen. Leeds would bomb forward, make a mistake and then Spurs would hit them on the counter and either score or go very close indeed. Would Kalvin Phillips have stopped Harry Kane dropping deep and pinging it to Sonny with ease? Would Patrick Bamford have taken any of the chances Leeds did manage to create? We will never know, but there was certainly a feeling that one of the names in the respective dugouts would be leaving after the final whistle depending on which way the result went. Antonio Conte was understandably less grumpy and self-questioning than after the ‘everyone say that coming’ defeat at Turf Moor. That said, he wasn’t quite as ‘these boys are the best I have ever coached’ as he was having beaten Peppy G a week ago either. As for Leeds, they’ll be hoping Jesse Marsch does a bit better than the last boss from the USA to ‘grace’ the

In second place on the other end peg, peg 1 which he also drew on his previous visit was Richard King. Richard also fished the feeder to catch carp and a barbel for 13.94kg. This included a fish of 4kg. In third place was Bill Cannon from peg 10 with 6.24kg again all caught on the method feeder. The other section was won by Richard “I can get tangled in telephone cables” Wood, who despite doing this weighed in 5.400kg. The pairs event was a very close affair but was won by myself and Terry Screen with 18.02kg. Rods N Reels The following day we ventured back

Premier League - Bob Bradley. If the Yorkshire club are very much in a relegation scrap, then so are Everton. Granted, Frank Lampard would have seen any point gained from a home game with City as a bonus but they are only a single point ahead of a resurgent Burnley. They made Pep wait for the three points, Phil Foden scoring late and Lamps was left suggesting that his threeyear-old daughter would have made a better fist of VAR duties than Chris Kavanagh. To be fair, he did seem to have a point unless Rodri has bizarrely large shirts sleeves. Everton have their lowest points total since 1930, but don’t forget that’s not Frank’s fault. Remember the days when Watford couldn’t keep a clean sheet for love nor money? That was, of course, BR (before Roy). The stats do suggest that United should have blown the Hornets away at Old Trafford but hey, if you don’t take your chances (or put it on an actual plate for Ronaldo) then you don’t win.

sense refereeing wouldn’t have gone amiss. Ollie Watkins ended his sevengame drought meaning Stevie G can start looking up the table again rather than down. Burnley are grinding their way up - a 1-1 draw at Palace courtesy of an own-goal making it a very good week for them, further enhanced by Norwich continuing to look like a team that might struggle to win the Championship next season. Wolves are wisely opting not to push for Europe - or at least that is the conclusion I am drawing given their lineup against West Ham. Tomas Soucek scored the only goal at the Athletics Stadium to keep the Hammers dreaming of the top four whilst knowing it will probably end up being the Europa League again.

Matty Cash scored the all-important opener for Aston Villa against Brighton and then got booked for removing his shirt - nothing to do with the message he revealed, though some common-

And, in a week where good news has been hard to find, Christian Eriksen came off the Brentford bench in their 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle (who are managing to keep winning despite losing Kieran Trippier). Don’t let the bonhomie around Eriksen’s return distract you from the fact that bar Norwich, Brentford are the worst form team in the Premier League right now and are joining Leeds and Everton in making the relegation dog fight a little more interesting.

in the Valencian region and fished the El Bosquet complex.

This venue has been throwing up some mixed results of late and once again it did not fish that well. Winner on the day was John Waples, drawn on peg 30 he fished the pole long with maggots to catch several carp and the odd mullet for 12.14kg. John was closely followed in 2nd place by Harry Billing on peg 28 with 11.12kg of similar fish but caught mainly on bread punch also on the long pole. In third place making a return to our shores was another top angler Vinny

Smith. Drawn on peg 3 he caught on maggot on the pole for 10.68kg. Other section winners were Mick Dixon with 5.88kg and Trevor Howard with 9.26kg. The pairs event was a foregone conclusion with Harry and John being paired together. Do you kiss on a first date? Meeting the parents, going to a wedding, dating on a video call and getting intimate – data analysts YouGov looked recently at how Britons feel about first date activities. If you’re in the dating game, what should you do – or not do – on a first date to maximise the possibility of getting a second one? Meet the parents? Not on the first date, say Britons According to the British public, bringing your date to meet your family, or meeting their family, is the biggest no-no of the 14 date activities YouGov asked about. Just 17% of Britons say it’s fine to meet your date’s relatives, or have them meet yours, on the first date. Around three-quarters (72%) of Britons say this is an unacceptable activity, including a third (35%) who say it is “totally unacceptable”. Similarly, if you were planning on bringing your date to a wedding, romantic comedy style – you might want to think again. Only three in 10 (28%) Britons say this is an acceptable activity for a first date, with 60% saying unacceptable. In pandemic times, many areas of life – work, school, socialising – have been moved online. However, according to Britons, you should still keep your love life offline. Just a third (32%) of the British public say it’s acceptable to conduct a first date entirely over video call, with more than half (55%) saying this is an unacceptable first date activity. Unsurprisingly, there is a significant

age difference – with those aged 18-24 split (44% acceptable, 41% unacceptable) on a video call first date and those aged over 65 firmly in the ‘offline’ camp (21% acceptable, 65% unacceptable). Four in 10 of Britons say it’s acceptable to go to your date’s home for a first date (38%) or have them visit you (39%), with half (51% and 50% respectively) saying this is unacceptable. There is also a significant age break here, with just 29%-31% of Britons aged 65 and over saying it’s acceptable to visit each other’s homes on a first date, rising to more than half (55%-56%) of those aged between 18 and 24. According to the British public, the most acceptable activities for a first date are going out for coffee (93% say this is acceptable on a first date), going out for dinner (93%) and going for a walk (92%). Nine in 10 Brits (91%) also say going out for drinks at a bar or a pub is an acceptable way to spend time with a first date. History and art-lovers rejoice: 89% of Britons think that going to a museum or an art gallery is an acceptable activity for a first date, while cinephiles will also be pleased with the 86% of Britons who say a trip to the cinema is perfectly fine for a first date. Further down the list of the activities which were voted as ‘acceptable’ by the majority of Britons are going shopping (58% acceptable, 32% unacceptable) and going on a double date with another couple (58% acceptable, 32% unacceptable).

Britons also tend to think that doing a physical activity, like a gym class or swimming, is acceptable for a first date. Half (49%) think it’s fine to get sweaty in front of your new date, while 39% think it’s not and 12% unsure.

Is intimacy acceptable on the first date? When it comes to intimate activities during or just after a first date, just a third (36%) of Britons say having sex is acceptable, with half (54%) saying it’s unacceptable and 10% unsure. Britons appear to think that sleeping in the same bed with a date is on the same level as having sex - 53% of Britons say you shouldn’t sleep in the same bed as a first date, with 37% saying this is acceptable and 11% unsure. The question of whether it’s acceptable to have sex on the first date has very different answers for older Britons than for younger ones. Just 15% of Britons aged over 65% say it’s fine to have sex on the first date, rising to more than half (56%) of those aged between 18 and 24. Other intimate activities, like kissing, holding hands and hugging, are much more acceptable for the British public across all age groups. Eight in 10 (79%) Britons say giving your date a kiss is perfectly fine on the first date, while 81% are happy with holding hands and 86% think hugging is acceptable. Just 13%, 10% and 8% of Britons say that kissing, holding hands and hugging are unacceptable on a first date, respectively.

Women and men are split on whether you should take your date to a wedding, meet the family, visit each other’s houses or have sex on the first date Understandably, women tend to be more cautious than men when it comes to first date activities. Men are twice as likely as women to consider visiting a date’s home (50%), or having a date visit their home (51%), an acceptable first date activity. Just a quarter of women think visiting a date’s home (26%) or having them round (28%) is acceptable, with 65% and 63% respectively saying this is unacceptable on the first date. While a quarter (24%) of men think it’s acceptable to meet a potential partner’s family on the first date, or have them meet your family, this figure falls to just

STEP 3 Top the sausages and gravy with the mash, starting from the edge of the dish and working your way into the middle.
