Orihuela Costa unites to support Ukrainian people it is estimated that up to a thousand Ukrainians have arrived in the Valencian community since the first russian attacks. the news comes hot on the heels of reports that housing associations across the Province of alicante are providing 100 unoccupied apartments for fleeing Ukrainians. this weekend, to show support to the Ukrainian people, residents of orihuela held two rallies. on Saturday people stood in solidarity against russia’s invasion of Ukraine and in support of the people of that embattled country. the rally brought together 20 different groups and associations, including the international association for the awakening of orihuela costa, aidoc, the n332 Facebook page, cLaro, help at home cB and caritas. after speakers addressed the 80-strong crowd in several languages the gathering ended with the release of 12 white doves of peace by local children. on Sunday, the second rally of the weekend was held at the promenade in Playa Flamenca. despite the rain around 150 people braved the elements to show their support. the event began with the singing of the Ukraine national anthem and was followed by several

speeches. the attendees were mainly Ukrainian, members of the local Ukrainian association, based in torrevieja. however, there were also lots of expats at the gathering and many people brought along banners and flags as a show of support. the event was very emotional; one young Ukrainian woman who had arrived from Kyiv earlier in the afternoon addressed the crowd. through heartbreaking sobs she spoke of the incessant gunfire, the bombing and the destruction she had experienced. She fled the city with her sister and daughter,

leaving her husband behind to fight. organiser, román Jiménez, thanked all those present for their support. “the people of Ukraine are the real heroes of europe today. they are defending freedom and trying to stop Putin starting the third world war” he said. “While Ukraine resists on the front line we can help also by providing donations of food and supplies to the most vulnerable people inside Ukraine and in neighbouring countries, especially those on the move in search of safety.” Local collection points are being added regularly and most are posted on Facebook. donations are being taken on the coast at help at home or you can Whatsapp Peter houghton, President of Pioc 604 38 81 83 for further drop off locations.

Scouts donate to Ukraine Repair work

demanded for La Glea

torrevieja’s Grupo Scout Las culturas gathered an impressive amount of donations for Ukrainian refugees. the items – food, nappies, baby food, milk, blankets and more – were collected at the group’s most recent meeting on Saturday in torrevieja with families giving generously to the cause. the group includes children of many nationalities – including Ukrainian and russian – and it was heart-warming to see them all coming together to help those in need.

Orihuela and Torrevieja to provide legal assistance for refugees from Ukraine the minister for Justice for the Valencian community, Gabriela Bravo, announced that her department will open seven free legal aid offices, including branches in orihuela and torrevieja, to attend to refugees from the Ukrainian war who arrive in the Valencian community. in both torrevieja and orihuela – especially along the coast, there is already a significant population of people of Ukrainian origin and it is foreseeable that more will come given the presence here of relatives or friends. minister Bravo explained that these offices “will be run by lawyers” in order “to manage the processing of all the resources they need, such as the health card, which will be

provided for provisional residence or for the exercise of any other right”. in addition, Bravo has announced that, “starting next week”, “an emergency 112 Ukraine telephone number will be activated so that anyone can receive immediate information about the resources that the Generalitat makes available to them, health needs, accommodation or relatives”. these special lines will be answered in Ukrainian and russian.

orihuela council has demanded that the Valencian Superior court of Justice grant its right to restore the 60 metres of the avenida de las adelfas road and the La Glea beach promenade in dehesa de campoamor, destroyed by the dana storms of September 2019. the road separates the north and south of the urbanisation and its threeyear closure means that drivers have to resort to less safe and much longer routes as they aren’t able to drive from one end of the beach road to the other. the repairs haven’t been made as the provincial service of costas alleges that the promenade and the road are on land that is in the maritime-terrestrial public domain, and therefore they are responsible for the repairs. orihuela council says that the closure of the avenida de la adelfas road has resulted in “the rupture and isolation” of two areas of campoamor, an urbanisation with thousands of residents that has been divided into two parts, “to the detriment of residents, visitors and businesses located in it.” the provincial service of coasts has not yet responded to the legal action submitted by orihuela city council, despite it being registered with the court several months ago.

torrevieja’s councillor for Security and emergencies, Federico alarcón, revealed this week that torrevieja has installed a new pioneering system to help pedestrians cross safely, even if they are looking down at a smarthone. the pilot project that has been installed at the pedestrian lights on avenida de La Libertad, in front of the old casino, torrevieja being the first city in europe where the system has been implemented.

the smart traffic light has a lighting device with the image of a pedestrian installed down on the ground so that lights on the actual pathway turn red when the traffic light is red and green when it is green. this way, the pedestrians who are going to cross the zebra crossing and who are looking at the ground using their Smartphone should immediately notice the change in colour of the traffic light. Federico alarcón said that the lack of attention shown by many

pedestrians is on the increase; many are more aware of their mobile than traffic. a study carried out in 2019 by Ponle Freno and axa revealed that 37% of those surveyed have admitted crossing the street looking at their mobile phone. Finally, the councilor for Safety and emergencies reported that the system will be presented at the amsterdam mobility and road Safety Fair, intertraFFic, the largest event in the sector in europe.

International Women’s Day international Women’s day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. even though international Women’s day is a well-known moment in most countries, it is often helpful to still set some context. the day has occurred for well over a century, with the first iWd gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people in austria, denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of america, United Kingdom’s Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women’s equality. the campaign theme for international Women’s day 2022 is #BreaktheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. action is needed to level the playing field. international Women’s day is not country, group, nor organization specific. no one government, nGo, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for international Women’s day. the day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. Gloria Steinem, worldrenowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained “the story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human

Russian Ballet postponed

the municipal institute of culture “Joaquín chapaprieta” announced that the performance of Gisele by the russian academiv Ballet company, which was scheduled to take place at municipal theater, torrevieja on march 11, has been postponed due to logistical problems of the company getting out of russia due to the war. all of those who have bought tickets can be assured that the tickets will be valid for a new date once it is announced by the municipal institute of culture or they can apply for a refund via the same channels through which they were purchased.

#BreakTheBias

rights.” So make international Women’s day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women. Local events there are a number symbolic events taking place locally. For example in San Fulgencio on Sunday, there was a zumba event in the square, and a women’s mass at the church. tonight (tuesday) at 9, there is a cine-forum (call 656 63 11 48 or 652 07 76 22 to book a space) and throughout the week there will be information points at all the civic offices. in torrevieja tonight there is a prizegiving gala for the Woman of the Year awards. the Woman of the Year prize was awarded to trinidad díaz Lucas, local entrepreneur and

owner of Papelería trini. the equality awards goes to mamen mateo Bosch, ex councillor for nGos and health and current president of the lobbying group Plataforma ciudadana Sanidad excelente. in orihuela there is a march at 7pm leaving from the town hall (in the city centre) and a series of talks, but no events on the coast that we could find. Do we still need an International Women’s Day? Yes! there’s no place for complacency. according to the World economic Forum, sadly none of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes, and nor likely will many of our children. Gender parity will not be attained for almost a century. there’s urgent work to do - and we can all play a part.

New bus service in Torrevieja should reduce waiting times by 50% torrevieja’s new urban transport service will have three night routes for the neighbourhoods farthest from the town centre, a new circular line and a total of eight services connecting the centre with the suburbs and urbanizations, compared to the 7 that are currently in operation. in total there will be 32 buses with hybrid technology with the aim of substantially improving the current service, with reductions in waiting time of more than 50% on average on all routes with respect to current service. the new service will preserve the circular routes currently in operation and services to La mata, Los Balcones, San Luis and the Friday market will increase, in addition to launching three night lines (n1, n2 and n3), for areas farthest from the centre. according to reports this week, it

is yet to be confirmed if the new bus depot will remain at the eras de la Sal or be relocated to Plaza capdepont. the new facility must be adequately equipped for the passage of 21 buses per hour. the town hall allows citizens registered on the padrón to travel for free with a special bus card. as such, 55% of all bus users do not pay for a ticket in high season, a figure that rises to 77% in low season. the supervisor of the town’s bus service commented back in november 2020 that to continue to offer a free bus service to such a degree was ‘unsustainable’. a study suggests new rates be introduced, recommending an ordinary ticket be priced at €1.40 with free travel vouchers for over 65s as well as free travel or discounts for students or large families.

Orihuela Police Save Mask wearing to ‘end soon’ Child’s Life Local Police have helped save the life of a child by ‘blue lighting’ his mother’s car through heavy traffic to Vega Baja hospital. By the time they arrived the boy was in cardio-respiratory arrest and had to be brought back to life by doctors. according to medics, had the

boy arrived just a few minutes later he would have died. the mother was rushing her son to hospital after he became ill whilst playing in a football match; she flagged down the patrol car in redovan when she got caught in heavy traffic and the child had lost consciousness.

compulsory masks worn indoors and in crowded outdoor spaces could soon be a thing of the past, and quarantining for anyone who has been in contact with a positive covid case is already no longer required. President Pedro Sánchez recently held an extraordinary general meeting of his party, the PSoe (socialists), principally to discuss the war in Ukraine but addressed other items including the covid pandemic. Sánchez highlighted the ‘formidable response’ among Spain’s public to the vaccine roll-out – more than 90 percent of those offered a jab have taken it up, which he described as an ‘extraordinarily-high figure’. the result is ‘one of the lowest accumulated incidences of covid in the european Union and as a consequence, ‘soon, very soon, when the minister of health advises us’, the president revealed that the people of Spain would be able to stop wearing masks altogether. Spain has long been very stringent

in its mask-wearing laws; they became compulsory everywhere outside private homes - other than when travelling alone in one’s car, physically eating or drinking in a bar or restaurant, taking part in energetic sports, and were even required in the open air in a deserted street - as soon as they became widely available for purchase from pharmacies and supermarkets. this was shortly after the 2020 lockdown finished in late spring. Last autumn, the requirement to wear a mask outdoors was scrapped, except in cases where a minimum distance of two metres could not be maintained with the next person, although the decision was briefly overturned when the omicron variant became rife in Spain. even though masks stopped being mandatory again on 8th February, many people still wear them out of doors as a precaution. and it is likely that a high number will continue to wear them in shops and on

public transport for the same reason – particularly in winter, as they will also help prevent them catching the common cold or ‘flu as well as covid. regional governments, in general, are reluctant to lift mask-wearing rules as yet, on the basis that until contagion incidence is low enough or the overwhelming majority of those who catch covid do not have to be hospitalised, continuing to use masks is a sensible precaution. also, from Saturday – 5th march close contacts of covid-positive cases are no longer required to quarantine until they get a negative test result – in fact, self-isolating ceased to become mandatory for school children some weeks back. and from Friday just gone – 4th march - sporting events can now have their full quota of spectators – as many as the venue was designed to accommodate safely, rather than a forced reduction to 50 percent or 75 percent of seats.

that’s what big banks are giving savers in the aftermath of two rate rises in quick succession. Barclays, natWest, hSBc, Lloyds and Santander continue to insult savers with easy-access rates paying 0.01 per cent. in december, base rate nudged 0.15 percentage points higher to 0.25 per cent, and climbed up to 0.5 per cent earlier this month. the link between base rate and savings rates was largely burnt once cheap money was pumped into the system. Living by the sea is good for you

the past couple of years haven’t been easy. at times, they’ve been very, very hard, with people suffering both physically and mentally as a result of the pandemic. Little wonder, then, that so many people are dreaming of a seaside holiday here in the Spanish sunshine as the weather starts to warm up. and a sea view could be just what the doctor ordered. according to Ben Wheeler, senior research fellow at exeter University’s european centre for environment and human health (ecehh), it takes just minutes to experience the positive effects of spending time near the ocean. those effects can be both physical and mental. Sea air is full of negative ions, which can improve a person’s ability to absorb oxygen, making them feel more alert. they may also serve to decrease irritation from airborne particles that cause people to sneeze and cough, according to Professor Pierce J howard from the US centre for

applied cognitive Sciences. Sea water can also provide relief to those suffering with eczema and dermatitis, while inhaling salty air can improve lung function in people with cystic fibrosis. in terms of mental wellbeing, spending time by the sea can reduce stress levels and increase feelings of calm through attention restoration, combatting the drain on our attention that daily life creates. not only that, but interviews with children conducted by the ecehh have shown that the seaside is where children report that their parents play with them more. other reported benefits include having better conversations and spending more time engaging in enjoyable activities. it takes just minutes for the positive benefits of being by the sea to start having an impact. marc Pritchard of Spanish building firm taylor Wimpey said, “We see the positive effect that beautiful sea views have when we show potential

buyers around our homes. that moment when they first step out onto the terrace into the sunshine and see the waves sparkling as they stretch into the distance is always special.” “Spending time by the sea delivers additional benefits when it comes to health and happiness, as people tend to spend more time outdoors. that means they get more daylight and usually more exercise too, so the positive effects are compounded. there’s certainly a compelling case for owning a property on the coast when it comes to boosting your health and wellbeing.” research certainly backs up the benefits of heading for the seaside. one of the largest studies of its kind, back in 2013, consulted 20,000 people about their sense of wellbeing and where they were at the point of recording it, spread out over random intervals. the data showed that people in marine and coastal environments were by far the happiest.

Assassin bugs in Benidorm Quirónsalud Torrevieja Oncology Platform celebrates “20 years of Bespoke Life”

terra natura Benidorm’s poisonous creatures exhibit now features assassin bugs. the permanent exhibition of poisonous creatures at the terra natura Benidorm has incorporated a colony made up of assassin bugs (Platymeris biguttatus). these insects get this striking name because of the way they feed on their prey. they feed on other insects into which they inject their saliva loaded with toxins and enzymes through their trunk. the enzymes they inject liquefy the tissues of their prey and turn them into a kind of pulp, which they then suck up to feed.

a man was arrested in elda, in the alicante province, for an alleged serious assault on his wife and son. according to reports, the man is accused of attacking his wife with a horse riding crop and their youngest son with a knife for trying to protect his mother. he is then alleged to have doused them both in petrol threatening to burn them. he is being charged with causing serious injuries, abuse in the family and attempted murder. the distress call came through on Sunday afternoon when officers arrived at the scene and had to break into the house by force. once inside, officers found the man in a state of distress, covered with blood. the couple’s son

Spain shelves probes into ex-king’s finances Spanish prosecutors have dropped all investigations into the finances of former King Juan carlos, potentially paving the way for his return from exile in the Uae. a key figure in Spain’s transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Juan carlos was the target of three separate probes over his financial dealings. the inquiries prompted the 84-year-old former monarch to flee the country into self-imposed exile in 2020. “the investigation… does not, in the Prosecutor’s opinion, allow for any criminal action to be brought against his majesty Juan carlos,” said a legal document released by the public prosecutor’s office. all three were being shelved for reasons including “the lack of incriminating evidence, the statute of limitations, the inviolability of the head of state and tax regularisation” payments he made in recent years. investigators initially began probing his finances over possible illegal commissions linked to a high-speed rail project in Saudi arabia that was awarded to a Spanish consortium in 2011. the suspicions centred on 65

million euros that Saudi arabia’s late King abdullah deposited into a Swiss bank account in 2008, to which Juan carlos had access. But the public p r o s e c u t o r ’s office said investigators “had not been able to establish, even indirectly, any link between the aforementioned payment of 64,884,405 euros and the awarding of a construction contract for a high-speed railway line in Saudi arabia”. Swiss prosecutors had also opened a probe into the same issue in 2018 but dropped the case in december for lack of evidence. at the end of 2020, Spanish prosecutors said they were looking into his possible undeclared use of credit cards linked to accounts not registered to his name, a possible moneylaundering offence. the alleged offences were believed to have taken place after 2014 when he lost his immunity following abdication. around the same time, another investigation was

opened into the alleged existence of a trust fund linked to Juan carlos in the island of Jersey, a British protectorate off northern France that is considered a tax haven. While he was never charged with any crime, the probes tainted his reputation and that of the Spanish monarchy. in august 2020, Juan carlos abruptly moved to abu dhabi, telling his son King Felipe Vi in a letter he was moving away from Spain in view of “the public repercussions that certain past events in my private life are generating”. Since then, Juan carlos has twice settled tax debts on undeclared income for a total of over five million euros in what was seen as a bid to avoid being charged with a crime.

told, in writing, exactly how much your financial adviser is earning, in pounds, shillings and pence, and have all costs and charges detailed in simple, transparent terms. this means that advice and product fees are separated, and your adviser is 100% focussed on providing you with the best possible solution for your circumstances.

We had originally planned to open an office in this area in 2020, but just as we were about to put pen to paper on the lease, coronavirus hit and the rest, as they say, is history! although in modern life, with emails, video calls, home printers and scanners, financial services can easily be provided remotely, we appreciate that having a local office is both beneficial and reassuring for clients making such significant life decisions.

the alternative to this is Spain is some opaque, complex, often multilayered charging structure, generally with a long tie-in and exit penalties, where you really have no idea who is getting their hands on your hardearned pensions and savings, and for what! often advice is focussed more on how much the adviser is being paid in hidden commissions, rather than what is best for you. Sadly, most firms still operate in this way in Spain, but at least now those in costa Blanca South can sit down with a chorus Financial adviser, and get truly client focussed, ethical advice without any of the usual nonsense that has given financial advisers such a bad name in Spain.

over the last half a decade chorus Financial have grown to become by far the most trusted financial services company in the region, indeed arguably across the whole of Spain. We were the first firm to openly insist on ‘fee-based’ advice and full transparency and remain one of the only firms with this policy in Spain. What this means in a nutshell is that as a chorus client you will be

well-known financial adviser here in Spain, who started his career in the UK working as a financial adviser for Lloyds and has been based in South costa Blanca for the last 6 years. chris has been very active in the local community for many years, running regular seminars, and talking finance on radio and in local newspapers. mael joins us as a client relationship manager, having spent the last few years working for a popular law firm in Spain specialising in expat legal advice. mael brings an incredible amount of experience into the role

andhuge value in terms of overall client care. chorus Financial now have the entire costa Blanca covered from our Javea and Benijofar offices, along with our remote advice options which are available across the whole of Spain. For those of you considering financial advice in 2022 who want to work with an ethical and client focussed company, contact chorus Financial by email on info@chorusfinancial.es, by phone on +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

With the opening of the new office, we are also very happy to welcome chris Shaw and maelcampi to the chorus team for 2022. chris is a popular and

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Whilst there still remains much uncertainty around Ukraine, ‘most’ G10 currencies have steadied, and remained within a slightly more digestible range over this past week. GBP/USd is one good example. having dropped from 1.3600, to a smidgeon under 1.3300 over Wednesday and thursday last week, the pair has spent this entire week (until today) trapped within a 160pip range. assessing key economic metric over the coming months will give markets a better perception of the impact. Where there was more volatility to be had for the pound was in the realms of GBP/eUr, which had a much more eventful week, moving back above 1.2000, marking a new post-Brexit high for the pound in the process. Before we all get too carried away with visions of UK economic outperformance, the move was much more to do with the single currency (see eUr), as anything. however, the move back above 1.2000 is noteworthy, given the pound’s struggle to gain a meaningful foothold on previous excursions to this region.

EURO there was plenty of volatility for the eUr this week. the single currency took a sharp downturn on the back of events in the Ukraine. eUr/USd has now dropped from nearly 1.1500, to just over 1.1000 in less than a month. there are several reasons to this. on the human side, roughly one million Ukrainians have now sought safety and sanctuary in the european countries that border with Ukraine, which does place a burden on national resources. at least in the short-run. Before last week, europe relied on russia for over 40% of its natural gas requirements. that is now a very big gap to fill, and markets pounced on that, with key commodity prices surging through the week, and the single currency dropping markedly. moreover, the trouble for the ecB is that this even bigger move higher in energy prices, will undoubtedly give euro-area inflation further upside bias over the coming months. this may yet force the ecB’s hand later this year, as they, much like the rest of the developed world, turn to higher rates in an attempt to tame inflation. indeed, the latest inflation figures were already nearly at 6% in europe, and that was before this week’s energy price increases hit the consumer’s pocket.

2nd century Roman jug found in the waters off Santa Pola a little over two weeks ago, a group of divers contacted local police in Santa Pola after they had been diving off the coast and spotted what looked like a vessel around 12 metres deep underwater. the vessel was located relatively close to where the ancient roman port, Portus ilicitanus is estimated to have been located; this port was the area’s main commercial hub for centirues. after analyzing the underwater images provided by divers, the local museum, museo del mar spotted an amphora (a type of jug) of significant archaeological value. it was decided to remove the artefact from the bottom of the sea where experts assure that there are, without a doubt, many more, but that they are buried under the sand. this jug for unknown reasons, was in plain sight. the divers explained at first that they tried to retrieve the amphora themselves, but it was tremendously heavy; partly because it was full of sand. instead, a retrieval team was set up, coordinated by Santa Pola city council, through the museo del mar and Santa Pola Local Police, with the help of Salvamento marítimo. the retrieval operation took some time to arrange. it was first necessary to open

a file in conjunction with the Underwater archaeological center of Valencia, dependent on the department of culture and heritage, the body that authorized the director of the museo del mar to start the retrieval of the piece. Policia Local, maritime rescue and an underwater archaeologist also participated in the operation. the municipal archaeologist, alejandro Pérez indicated that “this type of amphora would have been produced in the cadiz area and used to preserve and transport salted fish, sauces or condiments, or a fish called garum, highly valued in roman times throughout the mediterranean area.” he estimates that the amphora dates back to the late 1st or 2nd

century ad. the director of the museum of Santa Pola, maría José cerdá yesterday thanked the ministry and all the participants for their efforts so that the operation was successfully completed. the councillor for culture, trini ortiz, expressed her gratitude “to all the staff of the museo del mar, Salvamento and the Santa Pola Local Police who worked together and coordinated perfectly to recover the amphora. We recover and value heritage for all Santapoleros and visitors who will be able to enjoy everything that the sea offers us in our museum.” the piece has been transferred to the museo del mar where the desalination process will begin so that it can then be exhibited.

I’m a Celeb plans Aussie return The Australian jungle site used by I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! has been hit by severe weather. The bad weather news from Australia comes as the ITV show prepares to return to its original home later this year. TV bosses recently confirmed their plans to return Down Under, after being forced to film in Wales for the last two years. Rosemary Newell, Director of Content, said: “We expect I’m A Celebrity to return in Australia in November, when it will generate audience over 11 million.” The town of Murwillumbah in New South Wales, where the show is filmed, has been impacted by some pretty terrible storms. The flooding has been so bad that some families have had to vacate their houses. Environmental campaigner Emma Hannigan - who lives in the area – told UK newspapers: “This is climate change.

This is happening here, it’s happening now, and what more is it going to take for our government to take action this decade?” Speaking about the famous campsite, she added: “There has been minor flooding but there is more damage on the way.” I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! had been held in the Australian jungle for several years, but the coronavirus pandemic forced it to be moved to the UK due to travel restrictions. Speaking last month about returning to Australia, the show’s hosts Ant and Dec stressed they had enjoyed their stint in Wales but it was time to return home. “Nothing against Wales,” Dec stated on The One Show, with Ant adding: “We love Wales.” “But you know, Australia is I’m A Celeb’s home and we’d like to get back there - and we can!”

UK’s most wanted woman Cala Mosca development on hold arrested in Spain The Spanish authorities have detained a British woman who was convicted of having laundered the proceeds from a fraudulent scheme involving mobile phones and that brought in some £1 billion. The detainee, a 47-year-old whose initials are S. P. was part of a 16-strong criminal gang. She was the only one of the group to have evaded the law. According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the organisation purchased mobile phones abroad in order to avoid paying sales tax (VAT) on them, before reselling them in the United Kingdom. According to investigators in the United Kingdom – where she was dubbed the country’s “most-wanted woman”– the network managed to sell more handsets than were sold by legal stores. The 16 members of the organisation were tried in 2013 but S. P. failed to appear at several hearings before fleeing the UK altogether. She was sentenced in her absence to eight years in jail. S. P. has family ties in Spain, which led the British authorities to contact the Civil Guard on the suspicion that she could have been hiding out in the country. In 2015, investigations determined that she was located in Olivella, in Barcelona province, and

Cambiemos Orihuela has issued a statement stating that the Ministry of Public Works has requested the annulment of the approval of the partial development plan for Cala Mosca. Cambiemos Orihuela points out that ‘in the notification, to which we

have had access through the municipal registry, sent by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, the Ministry of Public Works requests precautionary measures from the Court and this is very relevant. We understand that the project will be paralysed until

Spain’s Covid death toll passes 100,000 that at weekends her husband was visiting her. The woman rarely left her hideout and her partner took advantage of his visits to bring her basic supplies. An attempt to arrest her was made but she had become aware of the police operation and changed her appearance before fleeing the area. Following the arrest attempt, the convicted fraudster stepped up her precautions and broke off all links with her relatives in Spain. However, in February, the authorities got information that she was located in the small municipality of Santa Bàrbara, in Tarragona. For weeks, dozens of officers were monitoring the area, and discovered that she was living in an apartment block on the outskirts of the town. She was arrested when she was walking her dogs. She will now be held in custody until she can be extradited to her home country.

More than 100,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Spain, Health Ministry figures have shown, as the country emerged from a sixth wave of the pandemic. Spain passed the grim milestone some two years after the pandemic took hold, with official figures showing 154 people had died since the previous day, raising the overall death toll to 100,037. Spain detected its first case of coronavirus on 31st January, 2020 in a German tourist visiting the Canary Islands and since then it has diagnosed 11,054,888 infections. Daily cases across the country over the last few days are averaging 18,800. When the pandemic first took hold, Spain was badly hit, imposing one of the world’s strictest lockdowns where no one was allowed out for walks or exercise for six weeks until the government began slowly easing the rules, first for children. At the end of 2020, the Spanish authorities began a rapid vaccination campaign, becoming one of the global

frontrunners with more than 91 percent of the population over the age of 12 now fully vaccinated. Despite high vaccination rates, Covid cases exploded over Christmas, with Spain’s daily infections hitting a record of nearly 180,000, giving it one of Europe’s highest incidence rates. But case numbers have plunged in recent weeks, with many regions dropping extra restrictions put in place to tackle Omicron and the government dropping the mandatory use of face masks outdoors, a measure re-imposed just before Christmas.

the resolution of the dispute, if the Court so rules.’ Cambiemos Orihuela, with the legal support of Compromís, has also filed a ‘contentious-administrative appeal’ against the plenary resolution which approved the development project.

Pedestrian bridge finally gets go ahead Orihuela Council is requesting that CaixaBank releases the 1.2 million euros that was deposited by the developer under a planning agreement, twenty years ago. This means that within 48 hours it will receive the funding that will finally enable the widening of the CV-941 road bridge where it crosses the AP7 in the Lomas de Cabo Roig area of Orihuela Costa - and finally create a pedestrian footpath.

Sports investment for San Fulgencio San Fulgencio Town Council has announced the start of the renovation and improvement of several sports facilities in the municipality. The Councillor for Sports, Ana Maria Villena, reported that “these are interventions that we believe necessary to bring and facilitate the practice of sports to the citizens of San Fulgencio”. The work, which will be carried out both in the urbanization of La Marina and in the town centre, will be funded through two grants from the Provincial Council of Alicante; the ‘+ Cerca’ plan and the ‘+ Deporte’ plan, with a total investment of 285,018 euros. The Councillor for Works and Services, Francisco Molero, explained that the work “will consist of the installation of artificial turf on both the 8-a-side football pitch in the urbanisation and on one of the tennis courts in the sports centre in the town centre”. The surfaces of these two playing fields will be renewed, as well as the perimeter fencing of the tennis court extended to reach a height of two metres, to allow a better continuance of the matches and avoid the inconvenience of lost balls.

Councillors visit local facilities

The existing posts and nets on the tennis court will also be renewed, along with the installation of a rugby goal on the football pitch, to be used for training in this sport. Consideration has also been given to the creation cricket training ground. The Councillor acknowledged that is a very popular practice among the British population. Samantha Hull, Councillor for Works and Services for the urbanization of La Marina said: “This is why we have considered setting up this training ground to make it easier for anyone who wants to play this sport. We have a player from San Fulgencio in the national cricket

team, so it will be useful when it comes to carrying out their training.” The pitch will be located next to the football pitch in La Marina sports centre and will cover an area of around 60 square metres. For his part, the Mayor of the municipality, José Sampere, indicated that ‘we are carrying out the conditioning of these outdoor areas so that the citizens can make use of them with all the possible comfort and safety’. The Mayor added that “the San Fulgencio Town Council will continue to work to improve the necessary sports facilities so that they can be enjoyed by the population”.

Renowned Spanish chef caters for Ukrainian refugees Spanish celebrity chef José Andrés is on the Poland-Ukraine border handing out hot meals to refugees fleeing the country. After reaching the frontier fence in Medyka the US-based restaurateur had dished up over 4,000 dinners by noon the following day. José, 52, is known for being one of the first on the scene whenever a disaster, natural or human-driven, occurs, in order to keep those affected well-nourished. From the Haïti earthquake to the Beirut explosion, from Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas to government workers left without their wages following ex-president Donald Trump’s shutdown, the star chef and

his team from his charity World Central Kitchen get straight into

the eye of the storm - literally, in many cases – and sets up his portable stove, cooking and hand-delivering meals. Originally from Mieres, Asturias, José Ramón Andrés Puerta moved to the USA when he was 22 and runs a string of élite eateries across the country, although he focuses almost as much on his disaster relief as he does on the businesses that keep his bills paid. He is currently working around the clock in sub-zero temperatures as Ukrainians – including small children, the elderly and people who are sick, pregnant or disabled – stand in line in a bid to get through the border into Poland and the European Union

Local unemployment falls The Public Employment Service has published the unemployment statistics for the month of February in the Vega Baja region. This reflects a decrease of 252 less unemployed people compared to January, which places the total number of unemployed at 26,410. Analysing the February data, the UGT points to the ‘positive impact of the labour reforms on the labour market, with specific growth in permanent contracts.’

The report highlights the approval of the increase in the minimum Inter-professional Salary (SMI) to 1,000 euros, which will be applied retrospectively from 1st January, 2022. The minimum wage increase aims to improve the living conditions of people who are working in the lower levels of the national salary scale. Looking at the unemployment figures broken down by municipality, there has been a decrease in most

towns, the most significant this month was in Orihuela with 28 fewer unemployed and places its unemployment rate at 4,947 unemployed. This was followed by Albatera with 21 fewer unemployed, taking its unemployment rate to 962 unemployed. The most significant increase in unemployment was seen in Callosa de Segura, with 50 more unemployed, so this month the unemployment rate in the town is 1,527.

Vegetarian diet could reduce cancer risk A growing number of people are choosing to eat less meat. There are many reasons people may choose to make this shift, but health is often cited as a popular motive. A large body of research has shown that plant-based diets can have many health benefits – including lowering the risk of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Two large studies – EPIC-Oxford and the Adventist Health Study-2 – have also suggested vegetarian or pescatarian diets (where the only meat a person eats is fish or seafood) may also be linked to a slightly lower overall cancer risk. Eating less meat lowers a person’s risk of developing cancer – even the most common types of cancer. Research shows low meateaters had a 9 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer compared with regular meat-eaters. Previous research has also shown that a higher intake of

processed meat in particular is associated with higher colorectal cancer risk. Women who ate a vegetarian diet had an 18 percent lower risk of postmenopausal breast cancer in comparison to regular

meat-eaters. Pescatarians and vegetarians also had a lower risk of prostate cancer (20 percent and 31 percent less respectively) in comparison to regular meateaters.

Orihuela animal shelter claims neglect ASOKA animal shelter in Orihuela has slammed the local government on social networks, claiming its contract with the local government ended in March last year and now has no food for the

animals in its care or money to pay its staff. The shelter has been left to carry on providing the service at its own expense, despite presenting a new tender for the management of

the centre in November. The management team says the situation is a disgrace and it is now in debt for veterinary bills and maintenance adding up to thousands of euros.

Hendrick’s launches new sea inspired gin Hendrick’s Gin has unveiled a curious new sea inspired gin, Neptunia, a limited release from Master Distiller Ms. Lesley Gracie’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Inspired by the magic of the sea, Neptunia is described as refreshingly infused with a blend of coastal botanicals and a crisp citrus finish. “I find listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore really therapeutic,” said Ms. Gracie. “Looking out onto the horizon and feeling the wind in your hair and the salty sea breeze on your face is just a great feeling – it’s so freeing, invigorating and calming all at the same time. I [...] take in the sound of the waves and that particular smell you find no matter what beach you are on.” “Most of my creations are based on memories – I play around with botanicals and combine them to recreate certain sensations. Hendrick’s Neptunia for me is that freeing feeling of the sea bottled in a gin. You have that distinctive fresh character from coastal herbs, depth of flavor from the sea botanicals and an unmistakably clean, bright citrus finish that lifts

in a round, refreshing way that makes it Hendrick’s.” Hendrick’s NEPTUNIA Fizz Cocktail 2 parts Hendrick’s NEPTUNIA Gin 1 part Fresh Lime 1 part Simple Syrup Top with Soda 3 Slices of Cucumber Combine all ingredients in a highball glass filled with cubed ice and lightly stir. Five unusual facts about glaucoma It may be surprising to some that glaucoma is actually one of the biggest causes of blindness in the world. In fact, it affects about 80 million people worldwide but many don’t even realise they have it due to the gradual onset nature of the condition. With World Glaucoma Week (March 6-12) just around the corner, Specsavers Ópticas is trying to raise awareness on this common eye condition, known as the ‘silent thief’, by sharing some unusual facts and insights with the public. An insight We’re all guilty of Googling our symptoms but with glaucoma being symptomless, it’s important to understand what the condition is before you start worrying. Lisa James, store director of Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar says: ‘Glaucoma occurs when naturallyoccurring fluid inside the eye does not drain properly, causing a build-up of pressure. The condition often affects both eyes, usually to varying degrees, however, there are two types - chronic glaucoma which develops slowly with subtle changes to your vision, and acute glaucoma which develops rapidly with a sudden, painful build-up of pressure in the eye.’ Let’s get physical While caffeine can raise eye pressure, some studies indicate that regular exercise can lower it. While there is no evidence to prove this can directly prevent glaucoma, it does support

overall eye health and that can only be a good thing. People of black-African origin are at higher risk of glaucoma Glaucoma strikes earlier and progresses faster in men and women of black-African or black-Caribbean origin and occurs about five times more often. The risk of glaucoma is 20% higher if the disease is in your family and blindness is about six times more common . Lisa says: ‘There are several factors which could make you more at risk of developing glaucoma such as family history of the disease. Those who have black–African heritage or who have higher levels of short sightedness

are also more at risk. Your age also plays a big part. Two in every 100 people over 40 are affected by the condition .’ Be a fighter and put down the lighter What many people don’t know is that smoking can have a detrimental impact on our eyes, it can cause a plethora of complications and even increase the risk of glaucoma. Lisa adds,‘While there is no evidence that smoking itself is a risk factor for glaucomatous damage, older smokers do have a higher risk of developing increased eye pressure compared to non-smokers.’ Lots of celebrities have glaucoma There are many high-profile stars

who live with the condition. U2 singer Bono revealed in 2014 that he has had glaucoma for 20 years and is receiving ongoing treatment. Astronaut John Glenn nearly lost his sight to it and campaigned in the early 00s, urging people to get regular eye tests. Other celebrities known to have had glaucoma are Whoopi Goldberg, Dame Maggie Smith and Andrea Bocelli. Testing for glaucoma Lisa explains why it is important to check regularly for glaucoma and how it’s done. ‘If you have chronic glaucoma, it can take a long time before you realise you have a problem with your eyesight. This is because chronic glaucoma is

painless and usually damages the outer edge of the vision and works slowly inwards. Without regular checks you may not notice a problem until the glaucoma is near the centre of your vision. However, it is not just measuring the pressure in the eye that allows us to detect possible early changes due to glaucoma, often these changes occur before the pressure in the eye is significantly raised. It is with careful examination of the optic nerve head using a powerful lens that allows us a 3D view of the inside of the eye that we can spot early changes. It is then, when we combine our pressure readings along with the appearance of the nerve head and any loss of peripheral vision that we may find when we carry out a visual field test, that we can assess the need for further investigation by an ophthalmologist. The pressure measurement alone is not enough to detect early glaucoma. Many cases would be missed if this was the only test that was used, much of the damage caused happens before the pressure raises significantly which is why a full and complete eye examination is so important in early detection of glaucoma and other eye conditions.’ There are Specsavers Ópticas stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca, offering comprehensive eye examinations. I am a single guy approaching mid 40s. I have never felt I wanted to settle down and get into a serious relationship, let alone have children. I have watched all my mates get shackled early in life and have kids; most of them split up from their partners after about 10 years. They complain to me that they wished they had not done so, and so I took the stark warning and did not go down that path; despite women wanting to tie me down, I have resisted and moved on. I have never found the right woman with whom I remotely felt I wanted to settle down, so I have remained single. It’s not a huge problem, but every time I am

CostaBlancaPeople 8th - 14th March 2022

with my extended family, I come in for flack about why I have got married and had kids. I usually respond that I am a confirmed bachelor, but sometimes this can provoke questions that I am perhaps, gay? I am not. The older I get, the more I am getting fed up with the questioning. How can I put an end to the interrogation? There is no law on how a person should live their life, and what is convention anyway? One person’s normal is not the same as another person’s way of living life. I should think in this day and age, doing ones’ own thing should be more acceptable, as I am sure it is with your peers. However, from what

you tell me it seems to be the older folk in your family who give you a hard time. You could get tough (but not cross), and tell these people once and for all, that you resent the questioning and request them to stop and allow you to live your own life.

Do silicone patches work? Silicone patches are gaining a lot of traction on social media at the moment but what exactly are they? Apparently, they are another weapon in the fight against wrinkles. Silicone patches can be found in all shapes and sizes and can be used on different areas of your skin, like your neck or decollete. How do they work? Each of these patches is made from medical-grade silicone, which creates the perfect environment to retain moisture in the skin. It doesn’t allow outside air to get to the skin, and actually draws up moisture from the skin, creating a plumping effect in the affected area.

Mi DGT App: One Year, New Features

miDGT, the application that the General Directorate of Traffic launched that allows the driver or the owner of a vehicle to carry both the driving licence and the rest of the vehicle documentation with full legal validity throughout the national territory, has exceeded two and a half million downloads in one year. The application is a commitment by the Agency to digitisation, by offering another way to communicate with the administration, more comfortable, faster and with the same guarantees as if it were done in person. The application was launched at a time when the Coronavirus pandemic paralyzed the country and the application, originally, allowed various administrative procedures to be carried out, such as having the vehicle’s electronic technical sheet, data consultation (ITV, insurance, environmental badge ...), consulting your points balance, updating the contact and address information that appears in the DGT records and receiving notices and alerts of interest. Throughout these twelve months, work has continued, and new functionalities have been incorporated such as requesting vehicle reports, buying rates, verifying official documents or sharing vehicle documentation. According to Miguel Martín, deputy director of IT Management of the DGT “miDGT is the spearhead of the digital transformation process of the DGT, by

which over the next few months we will be renewing our portals and offering access to all our services and main procedures in a completely digital way”. Soon... new features The DGT continues to work on new improvements that further facilitate the user experience and for this reason a new version will be launched in the coming weeks that will include, among other functionalities, the notice and payment of sanctions, the identification of the non-owner driver of the vehicle in case of complaint, the annotation of a regular driver and a usability improvement that simplifies access to the application. In addition, it is planned to also include access to the previous appointment or the completion of simple procedures, which are already available at the DGT’s electronic headquarters, such as the consultation of exam notes, the temporary removal of vehicles or request duplicates of physical documentation, among others. What do I need to download the app? Before downloading the application, it is necessary to be registered in the cl@ve system, which is the secure identification platform to interact electronically with the General Administration of the State. Then proceed to the free download of the official application on both iOS and Android, with an intuitive and friendly design, to make it easier for citizens to find the information they want, as well as make it easy to access.

Once the user has been identified with cl@ve, successive accesses will be made with the fingerprint or the security pattern registered on the device. In addition, from that moment you can see your driving licence, as well as access the different functionalities that are offered to you. The documentation in electronic support has the same validity as the document in physical support for Traffic purposes, but only in national territory, since abroad it will be necessary to carry said documents in physical form. The agents of the authority will be able to know in real time the information that is provided in the mobile and verify by reading a single-use QR code generated by the application itself said information from the tablets carried by the agents and see updated information about permits and validity thereof. Driving licences on mobile phones incorporate visual markings to make fraud more difficult. However, and despite the validity of the telephone support, it is recommended to carry the permits in physical format, since the verification of them on the mobile phone can only be done now by the agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil. Progressively, the DGT is providing the rest of the traffic surveillance bodies that request it with the necessary tools to verify these digital permits.

Other Changes to Traffic Laws This Month

The new ways of moving, connecting and communicating require us to evolve. For this reason, the Spanish government has adapted the Traffic and Road Safety Law to the times, a new reform that will improve the efficiency of the system and coexistence among all. Learn about the new rules that come into force on March 21: Now, on conventional roads, car and motorcycle drivers will no longer be able to exceed the maximum speed allowed to overtake other vehicles by 20 km/h. A measure that seeks to minimise the risk caused by overtaking and thus reduce the accident rate on conventional roads. Now, not using the seat belt, child restraint systems and other protection elements or not doing it properly will

make you lose 4 points Now, if you drive while holding mobile phone devices, you can lose 6 points. Now, throwing objects that can cause fires or accidents on the road or in its vicinity entails the loss of 6 points Now, it is mandatory to respect the traffic restrictions that respond to the active protocols in the event of pollution episodes and Low Emission Zones (ZBE). Now, it is prohibited to stop or park your vehicle in the bike lane or on cycle paths. The bicycle is one more means of transport, more and more numerous, and we have to learn to live with it and learn to protect this most vulnerable group. Now, to overtake a bicycle or moped, you must do so completely occupying

the adjoining lane on roads with 2 or more lanes in each direction. On single lane roads, you will have to maintain the minimum lateral separation of 1.5 metres or you will lose 6 points. It is a way to protect this vulnerable group., Pedestrians now have right of way over vehicles in crosswalks, on sidewalks and in pedestrian zones. Remember that we are all pedestrians at some point. Carrying radar jammers in vehicles is now prohibited, whether they are connected or not. They are systems that interfere with the proper functioning of traffic surveillance systems, so they are not allowed. Doing so means the loss of 3 points. Now, regardless of the infractions that have been committed, the term to recover the initial balance of points is 2 years if no infractions are committed that lead to the loss of points. Now it is no longer necessary to physically carry your driving licence. Thanks to the miDGT App, you will be able to prove that you have authority to drive. Now, when you take a test to obtain or recover your driving licence or other administrative procedures for driving, you cannot use intercom devices that are not legally authorised. It is also considered a very serious infraction to collaborate or assist another person for this purpose. In case of doing so, the applicant will not be able to take the tests to obtain or recover the permit within a period of six months. Now, if you have a motorcycle or moped, you can use certified or approved wireless devices in your crash helmet for communication or navigation purposes. Now, not wearing the helmet or not wearing it properly will cause you to lose 4 points. Now, if you are underage and driving, your alcohol level is 0.0. Remember that Personal Mobility Vehicles are prohibited from driving on highways and motorways.

More protection for endangered bird After the successful nesting of the protected Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in the Municipal Natural Park “Molino del Agua” in La Mata over the last two years, the Department of the Environment of the Torrevieja City Council has once again applied protection measures in collaboration with the Wildlife Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Provincial Coastal Service. Operators from the Department

of the Environment have installed additional markings of more than 400 linear meters on La Mata beach, which will be removed once the main breeding period for the species ends. Due to the fact that the Kentish plover nests directly on the sand, and due to its size and dull colours it is a difficult bird to detect. The Department of the Environment also stressed that it is very important not to cross the temporarily sectioned off area, and even try to

separate as much as possible from it when walking or sunbathing. The Department of the Environment stressed once again that one of the main threats to the Kentish Plover is loose dogs, which is why it appeals to all citizens, to keep pets on a leash to prevent them from chasing the plovers, damaging a nest or harming the defenceless young. The Kentish Plover is a small bird native to coastal lagoons and beaches

with dune systems, which is in danger due to the strong decline of its population in recent decades. Councillor for the Environment, Antonio Vidal, reported that last year four nests were recorded on La Mata beach of, two of them made a second laying (so the fence remained until the end of August) and in total 13 chicks hatched.

Imanyo Golf Society was formed in October 2014, once we were established we started raising money for charities in 2016 and have so far donated €5,170 to various charities over the years. In 2021 we decided to support A.E.C.C. Cancer Care, Diabetes and Huntington’s Disease. The money was raised through various events, raffles, football cards and extremely kind donations and we managed to reach a fantastic total of €1,200 so each charity received €400 bringing our grand total to €6,370, this

could never have been reached without the support of our members, friends and of course Don’s who is our Charity Secretary, more fondly known as our Charity Queen. The picture shows the donations being presented to Pedro Amalio Girona Garcia on behalf ofthe president of A.E.C.C. cancer care, David Allison on behalf of Diabetes and John from Giovanni’s Restaurant, John is an Ambassador for Huntington’s. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

TAleS FROM THe TOP FlIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Forget the title race, it’s still over the drunken stumble to 4th place is where the upper-end interest now lies in the Premier League. Arsenal seem to be sobering up quickest - with 13 matches left to play, they are in the chair after their 3-2 win over Watford. They have one more point than Manchester United, who are very much into their run-in now with just ten Premier League rounds to go. West Ham, manfully keeping up drink for drink despite not having as much money in their wallet are three points back with ten to go too and Tottenham - well Tottenham are either pacing themselves for a final binge over their 13 remaining games or they are already under the table, completely done. I’m not quite sure. At the Etihad, the inevitable outcome in the Manchester Derby was confirmed after about an hour Riyad Mahrez scoring City’s third from a corner routine. There was briefly the chance of it being a decent battle - Jadon Sancho scoring a fine goal as he ploughs the lone furrow of the one player to be improved by Ralf Rangnick. KDB got another derby double before Mahrez killed it completely in injury time - though by that point United had pretty much given up the ghost. Lindelof needed a ticket back into the ground after Foden turned him inside out in the build-up to De Bruyne’s second. Wan Bissaka saw all the credit he’d built up by not being in the side disappear with his 90 minutes here. Edinson Cavani had the right idea, ruling himself out injured before the game. We’ll probably find out whether Ronaldo was really injured or his blushes being spared once Rangnick gets the boot in the summer - nobody really thinks he’ll have enough juice in the orange to stay for the consultancy gig, surely? City’s 4-1 win opened the gap back up to six points on Liverpool, who had got their customary win over David

Moyes on Saturday. Sadio Mane netted the only goal of the game where West Ham clearly had a plan to stop Mo Salah - which, in fairness, worked even without Declan Rice. The Hammers can feel a bit disappointed to have lost - they were very good and Micky Antonio was at his mischievous best. They’ll just hope that Jarrod Bowen’s injury isn’t seasonending and that King Klopp wasn’t tapping him up when he had a word as the striker limped off at Anfield. The most effort expended on Merseyside was certainly by the crowd, though - a plane flew over the ground suggesting that the life of a cat is also important and the Kop reworked ‘attack, attack, attack’ to ‘a cat, a cat, a cat’ - I bet the meeting of minds coming up with that one was worth being at. Burnley might have spent just a little too long patting themselves on the back having kept Chelsea out for the first 45 minutes - Tommy T’s men put three past Sean Dyche’s hard workers within the first ten of the second period before James Tarkowski created the clearest chance of the match for… Christian Pulisic - who made it four. New manager, same result at Leeds United. Jesse Marsch is the man brought in to reunite a city in mourning after their iconic, mythical, crazy and, ultimately, not good enough for the Premier League, jefe Marcelo Bielsa was sacked last Monday. The American, who by his own admission knows his accent goes against him thanks to Mr Lasso, managed to tighten up the Leeds backline whilst still seeing white shirts bomb forward - but, in the end, they still contrived to lose 1-0. His new side sit just two points off the drop zone but, as we were reminded at least 100 times before kick-off, are very, very fit. One thing we can all agree on is that Arsenal just look weird in red shorts but, poor colour combinations or not, they rallied to beat Roy Hodgson’s Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road. Once again it was the young guns doing the damage - Odegaard, Saka and Martinelli all on the scoresheet and barely 60 years shared amongst them. Hodgson, with a smidgen over 60 years in the bank and some, admitted his side

could not play much better than that which will stand them in good stead in the Championship next season. They will be down there with Norwich and that is for certain - the Canaries absolutely stank the house out against Brentford, for whom Christian Eriksen started and caused chaos by simply putting corners into the area. Not an area, just the penalty area. Ivan Toney helped himself to a hat-trick, once again reminding us how prolific he is against second-tier opposition. He also showed off his penalty prowess, scoring two from the spot leading to Thomas Frank saying nobody is better in the world at them than his frontman. ‘Not Ronaldo, not Messi’ said Frank, stopping short at adding a certain Spanish goalkeeper to the list. Wolves’ boss Bruno Lage was not a happy chap after his side went down 2-0 to Crystal Palace. Lage called out having too many ‘kids’ in his side seemingly forgetting he is the man picking the team. These urchins “are not prepared as they should prepare” and Lage “won’t waste time on players who do not prepare”. None of that seems to explain why Raul Jiminez continues to be on the bench, given his age and his hard work to get fit again. But hey, managers. They need their excuses.

Imanyo Golf Society “Diabetes Cup” 2nd March at Bonalba This is the third time we played for the Diabetes Cup which is sponsored by Dave Allison (Society Photographer) in memory of his wife Joyce. Twenty-six players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. On arrival at Bonalba we were greeted by Richard and his team, everything was organised and ready to go and the course was in excellent condition from tee boxes to greens. The weather was a very pleasant 25 degrees with blue skies, perfect for golf and of course shorts. Winner of the Diabetes Cup was group B winner Jim Doyle with a very nice handicap cutting 47 points, runner up of group B was Lozz Maslanka with 37 points and third place went to “Jethro” Dave Sanders with 36 points. Group A winner was “The Joker” Mick Billins with 38 points, runner up was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 35 points and third place, on a four way count back, eventually went to “5 Wood” Chris

Houghton with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A, hole 7 “Wine Collector” Brian Court, hole 11 new member David Davies and hole 13 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, group B, holes 3 and 8 Jim Doyle and hole 15 “Sandy” Terry Burton. Best front nine went to Chris Baillie with 21 points and bestback nine went to the “The Joker” Mick Billins with 24 points, the Two’s pot was not won so it will be carried over to the next game. The football card was won by Colin Pepperday with Crystal Palace winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen

charities of 2022. We would like to thank Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s for the good food and great hospitality. Picture shows Dave Allison presenting the cup to Jim Doyle. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

Had you suggested in November that the third most expensive player in world football would have been turning out in a Premier League midtable clash between the Villa and Southampton come March, you’d have probably been tested for something non-pandemic related. But, Phil Coutinho was on the pitch and some would say he even graced it, playing a part in the first two and scoring the third in Villa’s 4-0 win. He probably should have had his own hattrick, but silky touches in the middle of the park and a 4-0 security blanket allows people to overlook some very shoddy finishing indeed - and if I sound bitter, it has nothing at all to do with Fantasy Football. Newcastle United won again and Brighton lost again. Both things happened in the same game at St James’ Park where Potter nicked mine/ everyone’s magic wand gag - possibly the best and worst thing he came up with all day given the result for his team. No doubt by the time you read this, Spurs and Everton will have done nothing to help the former close the gap on the top four and the latter ease their relegation worries. Lampard won’t be able to pick Dele, of course - not that seems to be a worry given how infrequently Alli has been seen at Goodison Park.
