‘Bono Consumo’ shopping vouchers are back the incredibly popular ‘bono consumo’ shopping vouchers are back once more for a 4th edition of the consumer spending initiative. the bono consumo was introduced by the town hall last year in an effort to boost local businesses by offering shoppers the chance to buy shopping vouchers at half price. shoppers would buy a 10 euro voucher to have 20 euro to spend at participating restaurants and shops. the scheme proved so popular that in recent editions, the vouchers sold out in a matter of hours. in order to make it fair to people who don’t have internet or computer access, the town hall has changed the system slightly to allow in person purchases of the vouchers first (by appointment), followed by the opening up of the online sale. the latest edition of the scheme was announced by torrevieja’s mayor eduardo dolón, together with the councillor for commerce rosario martínez and the councillor for Finance, domingo Paredes, alongside the president of torrevieja’s small and medium Business association aPYmeco, Jorge almarcha. the mayor explained that the in-person sale of the vouchers will begin this coming monday, march 21st at the office of commerce (face to face sales of the vouchers will remain open at this office until april 1st ). on april 2nd at 11am, the online sale will open to the public at the website torrevieja.bonoconsumo.es and once
purchased, the vouchers can already be exchanged in participating establishments until 20 June. a total of 369 establishments participated in the last edition of the Bono consumo including gift shops, sporting goods shops, restaurants and more. as in the three previous campaigns, the investment by torrevieja city council in this edition of bono consume amounts to €500,000, which represents a cash injection into local businesses of €1,000,000. this latest edition brings the total amount of investment in the four editions to €2,000,000 by the city council and a total cash injection to the local economy of €4,000,000. to buy vouchers in person, these are available at the office of commerce and Public roads located in the “La Plasa” food market (on the corner of c/ Joaquín chapaprieta and Plaza isabel ii), which will be from march 21 to april 1, in the morning and afternoon (from 9.00am to 1.30pm and from 4.30pm to 8.00pm). an appointment is necessary for in-person purchases and these can be requested all this week at the commerce office (8am to 2pm). consumers who wish to purchase vouchers in person, by appointment must meet the following requirements: - attend the appointment yourself with your original, personal and nontransferable dni/nie.
- have a credit or debit card enabled by your bank for online purchases and have the application on your mobile to authorize the sale. - have previously requested an appointment. consumers will be able to buy (for each dni/nie) a maximum value of €100 in vouchers, of which they will only pay €50. in order for a voucher to be applied at the time of purchase, id must be presented along with payment at the establishment itself, as well as the discount voucher in printed or digital format. the same person may redeem more than one voucher for the same purchase. if the purchase is made with several vouchers from several different people, the different ids associated with the different vouchers must be verified. Vouchers will have a face value of 10 and 20 euros, of which the customer will pay half, that is, 5 and 10 euros, representing a 50% discount on shopping goods or meals.
Beware charity conmen
the cruz roja is warning local residents not to give cash to anyone claiming to be from the charity collecting doorto-door. scammers are posing as volunteers and asking for money for the Ukraine conflict. the spanish red cross has said that going house-to-house for money is something it would never do for any cause. donations should only be made through its website or its official social media channels.

Watch out for Storm Celia Great news for the U3A
the recently named storm celia, the formation of which began on sunday, is set to bring adverse weather and poor air quality to almost the entire country. in the province of alicante it will bring strong gusts of wind, a significant influx of dusty air as well as rain, according to local weather alert group Proyecto mastral. early in the week, cloud cover will increase and we will experience light rain, according to aemet. as the week progresses, winds will increase in intensity and gusts could reach over 70 km/h, worsening sea conditions all along the coast.
Between today and thursday the amount of ‘suspended dust’ in the air will be very high - well above the thresholds that the Who believes to be safe, and the air quality will be classified as very poor. it is recommended not to do physical activity outdoors and to wear an FFP2 mask, especially if you suffer from underlying conditions associated with breathing difficulties such as asthma or coPd. Winds will remain strong early in the week and although some light rain might appear on tuesday, it will be from Wednesday onwards when storm celia moves towards the
mediterranean and increases the possibility of heavy rains and storms, particularly towards the end of the week. according to Proyecto mastral, the rains that fall will be accompanied by the typical red dust but it is also not ruled out that dry falls of dust may occur due to the high concentration in the air. the airborne dust will begin to dissipate from thursday, although the weather will remain unsettled almost certainly into the weekend. the last weather event of this type took place just over a year ago when desert sand fell in a thick layer on streets and buildings here, without rain.
torrevieja U3a has good news for all of its members (and anyone else wishing to join the association). organisers told the costa Blanca People that at last, “We are returning to our old home at the cmo (centro municipal de ocio) centre in torrevieja. the hall is located, as long term members will know, close to the habaneras commercial centre and carrefour store and it also has a large, adjoining car park, so there will be no problems with parking for our visitors!” the day for U3a monthly meetings is also reverting to the last mondaY of each month. the group’s march meeting will therefore now be on monday 28th with doors being opened to members from 10.30am. the meeting will start at 11.00, as per normal, and all the usual U3a facilities will be there. there will be refreshments available from the cmo bar and a menu del dia will also be available for anybody wishing to dine after the meeting. however, for the time being, it will be necessary to actually book and pay for the meal on the day and directly to the bar staff. organisers explained, “We are hopeful that sometime in the near future, we will be able to offer a similar service as we used to enjoy in the past.” Further details of the changeover will be sent to existing members in the U3a’s
The CMO in Torrevieja
monthly newsletter. more details of this, and all other U3a activities that are provided for members, are available to anybody visiting the group’s website at torreviejau3a.org. the U3a’s latest group ‘Walk and talk’, which is an informal offering at the moment, had its latest session on saturday morning at Los alcazares. approximately 45 members met up to enjoy a pleasant stroll in the sunshine along the promenade starting off at 11.30 from the cafe by the windsurfing school. the U3a is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community - those in their third ‘age’ of life. U3a membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one’s life (the third age) after the second age of fulltime employment and parental
responsibility. anyone can join torrevieja U3a and this includes people who are working part time. there is no lower age for membership. the torrevieja U3a is a learning co-operative which draws upon the knowledge and skills of its own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. the association encourages and enables members to help each other share their knowledge, skills and experience to celebrate the capabilities and potential of its members and their value to society. Group activities offer the chance to enjoy life, meet new friends and study many different subjects in varied fields. there is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained - the approach to learning is “learning for pleasure”.

Alicante port to receive 80 cruise ships this year two cruise ships docked on Friday, the iona, of the P&o cruises company, which arrived from Gibraltar for a few hours before leaving for Barcelona and the mein schiff 5, of tUi cruises, which arrived from Valencia before departing at 10pm for Palma de mallorca. in total about 3,900 tourists arrived between both ships and it is estimated spent around 200,000 euros. the majority of Friday’s cruise passengers were of British or German nationality, and enjoyed free movement around the city or took scheduled excursions organised by the cruise companies. if the evolution of the pandemic and the Ukraine war does not disrupt the travel industry, the port of alicante plans to host 80 cruise ships this year, twenty more than in 2019, which will be a historic figure in terms of cruise tourism for the city, according to Francesco Balbi, president of the alicante association for cruise tourism. Francesco Balbi is hopeful that it will be a good year, because the mediterranean will benefit, unfortunately, from the effects of the invasion of Ukraine. cruise companies consider the mediterranean as a safe zone, far from the conflict. itineraries through russia and the Black sea have already been canceled
and the ships have to change their plans in order to continue sailing. Figures from the alicante association for cruise tourism suggest that the cruise tourist who makes a stopover in the city will spend an average of 50 euro in bars and shops. By that reckoning, the almost 4,000 tourists visiting last Friday, if they all leave the ship to walk around alicante, will have spent around 200,000 euros. the shipping company msc has listed alicante as a base port for twelve departures of its orchestra ship for its mediterranean route, which will allow 20,000 tourists to board the ship through the alicante terminal, meaning 7.5 million euro of revenue for the city.
the reactivation of the postpandemic tourism industry has positioned spain as one of the most popular destinations in southern europe for cruises. another of the cruise companies that will stop in alicante this year will be costa cruises, which has just launched the toscana, a state-of-theart ship powered by liquefied natural gas. mario Zanetti, President of costa cruises said, “We are detecting an increase in demand for our cruise ships. i believe that cruise ships will return before summer with new protocols that will allow our guests to fully enjoy the experiences on board and on land, with the return, for example, of excursions without restrictions for guests.”

Why Chorus Financial are different By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner chorus Financial
Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? as many of you will likely know, chorus are certainly not spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from Brits living in spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in spain cared
about. chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. regulation isn’t all that strict in spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-quality underlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like siPPs, QroPs, spanish compliant Bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for
many years, we’ve won major international awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of Brits in spain. so why are chorus different? Well, myself and the chorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. although we operate under a major european financial services network, aisa international, aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. Unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high
up-front commissions or fees. over the years this has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible longterm security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. Whilst we might not be the largest, or indeed the longest established firm out there, we would like to think that our approach makes usthe best, and hopefully ourever-growing list of happy clients would agree! if you would like to discuss your investment or pension needs here in spain, please contact chorus Financial for a free, no obligation consultation by emailing info@chorusfinancial. es, calling +34 965 641 163 or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP having waxed lyrical last week about how well the pound had been holding up given the circumstances, low and behold, this week started with sterling playing catch-up, or rather, selling-off. markets struggled a bit initially to find the root cause for the decline, some analysts pointed toward how the UK economy would struggle in a land of weaker global growth, driven by the war in Ukraine. Perhaps the increasing pressure on the chancellor, as he tries to grapple with higher inflation, even higher energy costs, and the increasing cry for lower taxes to help the consumer, played a big part in the thinking here. that seems the most digestible argument to me, given that wages are by no means keeping up with inflation, and we are only just about seeing the higher cap energy costs filter through to the end consumer. that was before this latest price rises in commodities, by the way. so, the imminent spring Budget will see the chancellor having to be more magical than Paul daniels, and that creativity will also require some more of that magic fairy dust being scattered on increased defence spending, as the dark clouds of stagflation threaten to circle above. as i said at the top, the pound started the week on the backfoot. GBP/Usd had declined from 1.3400 to 1.3200 last week, with most of that on the back of that stronger February U.s Labor report. this week, GBP/Usd continued the decline, dipping under 1.3100 for a spell, and then rebounding a touch in-line with the broader dollar decline on Wednesday. GBP/eUr had a fascinating week too. having reached a top nearing 1.2200 on tuesday, the pound then fell sharply back to below 1.1900 by the end of the week. those moves were more about the eUr (see next section), than anything sterling-specific, given the light UK data schedule to be had this week. next week’s Boe meeting promises to be intriguing, if not quite as exciting as the ecB.
having already raised UK rates twice, and given the conflict in Ukraine, there may be more of a reason for the Boe to take a pause, whilst they assess the impact on the economy. in the meantime, the housing market seems to be ignoring those rate rises, for now at least. EURO sorry Usd, but the eUr really is the most interesting currency in G10 just now. Last week saw periods of intense volatility amongst the eUr crosses. First, we saw a further sell-off for the single currency, driven of course by the war in Ukraine. the worry to markets was how exposed europe is to russian energy, and how that all fed into the impact for the european economy going forward. Understandably so, perhaps. eUr/Usd had slipped from 1.1400 to 1.0800 in just over 2 weeks, as a consequence. GBP/ eUr, as we said above, nearly reached 1.2200. it was a similar picture (of weaker eUr) across the board for the single currency. then we had the comeback. not quite at rocky levels, but a combination of factors drove the strong move higher. Positive risk appetite in markets played a big part, but the impending ecB meeting also caused traders to take a pause. that ecB meeting then did yield a big surprise. markets had convinced themselves that the ecB would baulk at the prospect of ending Qe early or raising rates in the region sooner now that future growth prospects were in question, however, the ecB didn’t read the script. Lagarde& co instead said that they would look to increase the pace of tapering, or reduce its bond-buying scheme earlier than initially planned, to you and me. they also dropped the necessity to end Qe ahead of raising rates. small point, but that matters because if you can’t hike/won’t hike until you have ended Qe, then when you end Qe matters most. so, the chances of a rate hike from the ecB this year could be back on the table, albeit at a push.

This Week´s Movie Picks Marley & Me
Little Voice
after their wedding, newspaper writers John and Jennifer Grogan move to Florida. in an attempt to stall Jennifer’s “biological clock”, John gives her a puppy. While the puppy marley grows into a 100 pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy or rambunctiousness. meanwhile, marley gains no self-discipline. marley’s antics give John rich material for his newspaper column. as the Grogans mature and have children of their own, marley continues to test everyone’s patience by acting like the world’s most impulsive dog.
after the death of her father, Little Voice, or “LV”, becomes a virtual recluse, never going out, and hardly ever saying a word. she just sits in her bedroom listening to her father’s collection of old records of dame shirley Bassey, marilyn monroe, and various other famous female singers. But at nighttime, LV sings, imitating these great singers with surprising accuracy. one night she is overheard by one of her mother’s boyfriends, who happens to be a talent agent. he manages to convince her that her talent is special and arranges for her to perform at the local nightclub, but several problems arise.

Lucas and Walliams back together Matt Lucas and David Walliams will impersonate Miley Cyrus and her famous father Billy Ray as part of their comedy sketch show Rock Profile when it returns for a one-off Red Nose Day special later this month. Rock Profile, written by and starring Lucas, 48, and Walliams, 50, first aired in 1999 on UK Play before moving to BBC Two in 2002. The show consisted of a series of spoof interviews where Jamie Theakston – playing himself – interviewed Lucas and Walliams as they portrayed caricatures of well-known musicians. In the upcoming Rock Profile special, Vernon Kay will take over Theakston’s original role and will be interviewing some familiar faces, played by Lucas and Walliams. The interviewees will be in the recording studio preparing for the release of the Comic Relief single,
a version of Whitney Houston’s The Greatest Love of All. In aid of Comic Relief, Lucas and Walliams will take on the role of artists including Adele, Post Malone, Lady Gaga and Lewis Capaldi. The third and final series of Rock Profile was made available in 2009 on the website Funny Or Die. In the final series Theakston was replaced as host by Dermot O’Leary. Kay said: “I have been watching David and Matt’s sketches for as long as I can remember, so I am super excited to get to be part of one myself. “If we can make a few people laugh and raise some money, then we have done our job. I can’t wait to see what David and Matt have in store for me.” The Rock Profile special will air as part of The Red Nose Day night of TV on BBC One on 18th March 18 at 8pm (Spanish time).

Automatic residency for Orihuela Police launches Drone Unit Ukrainians Ukrainians without valid residence permits living in Spain will automatically be given leave to remain in the country, even if they arrived before the war broke out, the Spanish national government has confirmed. Residence documents will be accompanied by work permits, so that new arrivals can start earning money the moment they reach Spain, explains government spokeswoman Isabel Rodríguez. The decision will suppose a ‘legal modification’ which ‘widens the subjective scope’ of migration law, creating an ‘exceptional mechanism’ in line with a recently-announced European Union directive. This directive allows anyone leaving Ukraine to escape the war to be granted asylum automatically for at least a year and up to a maximum of three, in any EU member State, with full access to national public health and education services and any recognised government aid or benefits the country in question normally offers. After these three years, it is possible that the cross-State agreement will be modified and extended if the war remains ongoing – if peace has been declared, many refugees will probably want to return home, but those who wish to stay in
their adopted country may then be able to apply for permanent or long-term residence via the normal routes if they are settled and have a regular income. The automatic residence rights process applies to all Ukrainian nationals in Spain, given that those already living in the country cannot now return there under any circumstances, due to the conflict. Around 100,000 Ukrainians were living in Spain prior to the war, with or without a residence card, but they will now be given these for a minimum of one year irrespective of their work status or income. The Spanish government is working on the basis of around 12,000 Ukrainians arriving in the short term – double the figure of 6,000 it initially anticipated – and fully expects the numbers reaching Spain to multiply as the war continues. So far, the United Nations calculates that around two million people have fled Ukraine in the last fortnight. Last week, the various regional authorities in Spain reserved 5,000 hospital beds nationwide for incoming refugees – some of which will be needed immediately, by those who were already ill before the conflict, those who became injured during the initial days,
and those suffering from exposure and other ailments from long days and nights queueing at borders. The national government wants to see an even greater response, though, and has asked each region to draw up an inventory of their available resources. Sra Rodríguez says Sánchez’s cabinet is working closely with charities and associations run by Ukrainian expats in Spain to set up three key initial welcome points – in Madrid, Catalunya and the Comunidad Valenciana. Open arms Valencia has already welcomed a bus carrying 44 Ukrainians, mostly teenagers, children and their parents, through the charity Juntos por la Vida (‘Together for Living’), which started an exchange programme with kids from the eastern European nation being fostered for a summer by parents in Spain, mostly during the last conflict with Russia but continuing since. The majority of those, who were welcomed by applauding crowds as their coach arrived in the early hours, will be staying with the families who have fostered them in the past – adults included.
Orihuela’s ‘Drone Unit’ was introduced to the public recently by the Mayor of the municipality and the Councillor for Security. The event was also attended by the Deputy Mayor, the Councillor for Emergencies and the Chief of Police – and everyone seemed to want their turn trying out the new equipment. The Mayor explained that the Drone Unit is made up of four trained ‘pilot’ officers and two top of the range aircrafts:
DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Zoom, equipped with loudspeaker, lighting spotlight, stroboscopic beacon and DJI Mavic Min 2, as well as a radio transmitter, a support van equipped with a monitor, computer, chargers, independent power supply system and a tent for protection. The drones can be kept in the air for 30 minutes with a flight radius of around 10 km. The police spokesmen said that the drones will be used for traffic control, accident
investigation unit, monitoring of fly tipping, control and surveillance in rural areas, control of large crowds, as well as searching for missing persons. The event was also attended by members of the Local Police of Alicante, Elche and Cartagena, Fire-fighters from the Alicante Provincial Council, Autonomous Police, National Police, Pegaso Group of the Civil Guard, MOE, Civil Protection, Red Cross, infodrones and Emyplan.

Metal wine bottles cause a stir Would you be willing to buy wine packaged in an entirely aluminium bottle? CCL Container — which calls itself “the leading manufacturer of impact-extruded aluminium packaging for a broad range of consumer products” — recently announced that they’ve added a new aluminum wine bottle to their portfolio. “The wine industry is steeped in tradition that dates back thousands of years, yet many brands and
wine drinkers are clamoring for innovation,” said Kimberly Kizer, vice president of sales for CCL Container. These aluminum bottles are “resealable with a threaded cap that can keep the wine fresh for longer,” and since “the threading in the cap does not contain plastic, the entire container, made from virgin aluminium, is 100 percent recyclable,” they write. Aluminium bottles weigh less, making them cheaper to
ship, and they’re also less likely to break. CCL adds, “With higher thermal conductivity and chill retention than glass and plastic, aluminium bottles cool quickly and stay cooler for a longer period of time.” Plus, aluminium allows for design elements across the entire bottle, not just on a label, to help these already unique bottles stand out even further.

Microwave myths Turns out there is still a lot we didn’t know about these musthave appliances but luckily, one of Spain’s leading consumer organisations, the OCU, has unravelled the mysteries that have hung around microwaves since the beginning of the 1990s. It has issued true and false facts in a handy little guide, so we all know how to use the appliance safely.... Does the radiation from a microwave affect the food being cooked? “No. It’s one of the most common myths about microwaves, and it’s completely false,” stresses the OCU. “The radiation emitted simply causes molecules to vibrate, which produces heat and warms up the food, but does not modify the atoms or turn food radioactive.” And there’s no truth in the rumour that cooking in a microwave destroys the vitamins and nutrients in the food in a way that would not occur with baking, roasting, grilling or frying, according to the OCU – almost the opposite, in fact, given that cooking time is reduced by using a microwave, meaning the good qualities in foodstuffs are less likely to be eroded by long-term
exposure to heat.
Do the micro-waves leak out of the appliance? “This is also false. If the appliance is in a good condition, the waves cannot filter through the ‘walls’ or the grate or mesh on the door,” the OCU explains. “During our latest research, we measured the emissions from microwaves, and the values found were practically nil.
Is it true you shouldn’t put plastic in the microwave? “That is, actually, true,” says the OCU. “Not all containers can be used in the microwave. “Unless the instructions on the food packet say it should be placed in the microwave in its existing plastic container. This is because particles from this material can migrate into the food itself during the warming process.”
Boiling water in the microwave: Is it dangerous? Not so much in terms of blowing the appliance up, clearly not in terms of radiation, but When water boils in the microwave, you don’t tend to get the same type of bubbles as you would when boiling in a kettle or on a hob. “This means that when you stir it or add anything to it [like a teabag], the bubbles can shoot up very suddenly and violently and send boiling water splattering everywhere – so you’re likely to scald yourself.” Other stuff you shouldn’t heat in a microwave Eggs should not be boiled in a microwave. Microwaves heat food from the inside, and steam accumulates inside the shell, explains the OCU, meaning the eggs can explode whilst being warmed up. Other items not to cook or place in a microwave include: leafy veg or grapes - unless in water - wooden bowls or plates or chicken. This is because microwave heat will not cook chicken uniformly or completely, inside and out, which could cause food poisoning.

Actors Community Theatre is proud to present Murdered To Death To say that the last two years have been difficult for all performing societies in the area would be a massive understatement, but with a succession of events unrelated to Covid, the ACTS drama group suffered the added setbacks of serious illness and the loss of several value members who, through necessity, have had to return to the UK. Looking to lose weight but love beer? Look to low alcohol As the evenings get brighter and the clocks are set to change, many of us are looking to regain our fitness before summer. However, if you’re a beer drinker, how can you continue to enjoy your favourite tipple and still lose weight? Looking for beers with lower alcohol content could be the answer. Lower alcohol
means there is reduced sugar in the beer, and if there is less sugar then there will be fewer calories by volume. Always look at the ABV of an alcoholic drink and consider each letter of the acronym – Alcohol By Volume – how much you drink in quantity per pour in millilitres is as important as the ABV too. This is where so many people
go wrong when they think that beer is extremely unhealthy. It isn’t. As long as we enjoy it in moderation while staying fit and healthy. Beer is made with natural ingredients. How your body reacts to different drinks has a lot to do with how it digests these ingredients and, also, what you eat during and after drinking.
Gordon’s launches new summer gin It’s only just about spring and with the cooler weather we have been experiencing recently, summer seems a long way off. Luckily, here in Spain warmer weather is always just around the corner and we are already starting to think about the first barbeques of the year. Of course, as well as sizzling burgers, fresh salads and dishes of coleslaw – the perfect summer drink is also high on the menu. Last year, we went crazy over Smirnoff’s Raspberry Crush and Baileys Pina Colada, and this year we’re all about Gordon’s latest gin flavour, Tropical
Passion Fruit. The perfect accompaniment to a hot summer’s day, and the ultimate add-in for this year’s ‘in’ cocktail - Pornstar Martinis. But we know the options for creating insanely-delicious cocktails is going to be plenty once we can get our hands on a bottle. First spotted via Instagram reviews, there’s been no official word from Gordon’s just yet, on this new sweet, tart gin with a refreshing and exotic taste of passion fruit hitting local stores. However, you can bet the role out across the UK and Europe
will definitely be pre-summer. If you are a lover of all flavoured gin, then, you’ll be pleased to hear that this brand-new gin will be joining an already delicious range of flavours, including Sicilian Lemon, White Peach and Mediterranean Orange. Gordon’s Mediterranean Orange gin was the brand’s most recent flavour instalment (prior to this year’s Tropical Passion Fruit), and is packed with notes of fresh orange. Not only that, it’s meant to taste incredible served with plenty of ice, a wedge of lemon and a sprig of rosemary to create a most refreshing G&T.

A friend of ours is dating a man, whom we know is also seeing someone else. My husband sees him at his bowls club, and it’s clear this man is dating one of the members there too. We don’t think either woman knows of the existence of the other. I feel wretched for my friend, and want to tell her but my husband says we should not intervene, even though this man has indicated to my husband that he is seeing both women and thinks himself quite the charmer. The trouble is, if my friend finds out that I knew, I feel sure she would want to know why I didn’t tell her. I am hopeless at telling fibs, so if I told her that I wasn’t aware, it

would show all over my face. I think if it were me, in all conscience I would have to tell my friend something. You could say to her that you might be wrong. From what you tell me, your friend’s relationship is still quite new, so if you left it to become more serious before saying something, it would be far worse. You can say that you feel she should know because you have been friends for a long time, and if she found out you knew, it would be bad all round. There may of course be an innocent explanation for this guy speaking to this other lady, and this you could point out so as to limit the damage so to speak. Then at least you have planted a seed.

Transform your skin by quitting the smokes Despite being a habit that is proven to lead to increased probability of developing many cancers and heart disease – millions light up each day. The impact on health has long been known, but now dermatologists are discovering the long-term effects of prolonged smoking has on your appearance. Chronic smoking deprives your skin of oxygen, as many of the 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke trigger the destruction
of collagen and elastin. This contributes to premature ageing, skin sagging and discolouration of skin tone. Continued use of tobacco can lead to your fingers becoming yellow and smokers often see fine lines around the mouth. The fine lines are caused by exposure to smoke and smokers utilising face muscles around the lips to pucker, which causes lasting damage.

Common Faults with Vehicle Lights That Can Result in an ITV Failure
Vehicle lighting is of vital importance for maintaining road safety. That is why, in ITV centres, part of the inspection consists of thoroughly checking the condition of the car’s lights. This element is one of those that can cause the result of our ITV to be unfavourable or even negative, since it is associated with many serious defects that are, in the end, the ones that can prevent us from driving. Each type of light (fog, brake, dipped...) has associated defects, although in general the most common failures that can cause a failure at the ITV inspection are: If one of the main beam lights does not work, it is considered a minor defect. In the event that none of them work, it will be serious and a reason for a negative on the ITV. Carrying burnt out, broken light bulbs... will be cause for serious misconduct. If any of the dipped lights do not work, it will be considered a serious defect. The light beam can be a serious fault if it is too high (it can blind other drivers) and a minor fault if it is low or
deflected to the side. When the intensity of the main beam exceeds a certain level, it can also be the reason for a negative ITV. It will be a serious defect to carry unapproved headlights. The same will happen if the colour of the light they emit is not regulation. When the device has a defect that affects its operation, a serious fault will be received. If the warning light on the dashboard
does not come on when we activate the high beams, it will be the cause of a minor defect. It will also happen if the control with which the lights are levelled does not work. The light source has to be compatible with the bulb or else it will be a serious failure. The high beams must all be turned off with a single command, otherwise it will be cause for serious fault.
Carrying Animals in Cars
Animals are permitted in private vehicles but must be properly restrained using appropriate harnesses or equipment. As we look at the law, it clearly says that having an animal in the vehicle that could interfere with the driver is illegal and can result in a fine, so a dog sat loose on the front seat for example is not allowed. Carrying animals which are not properly restrained is dangerous to them too. The same applies for cases, cages, and boxes
with the animal inside, they too must be properly secured. Animals are unpredictable, especially in environments they are unsure of or not used to. If loose, they could interfere with the driver´s ability or visibility. In the event of a crash, the animal would suffer considerable injury and, most likely, death. There are a wide range of security devices available for animals, from boxes and cages, which must also be secured as mentioned, to harnesses
which link to the security elements of the vehicle, some adapting the existing seatbelts, others using security points designed for child seats for example. It is not just appropriate to have your dog attempt to wear the seatbelt designed for human passengers, only the appropriate device for them. Simply holding onto an animal sat on your lap is not allowed. Incidentally, if you are found to have an animal loose in the vehicle, there is an 80 euro fine.

Benidorm bars will miss Officials concerned Putin may use chemical weapons Russian spending Official tourist groups in Benidorm are reporting that holiday bookings are increasing but are already counting the cost of losing high-spending Russian holiday-makers. With flights grounded as a sanction prompted by the invasion of the Ukraine the usual influx of Russian visitors will not be arriving on the Costa Blanca this summer. A spokesman from a Benidorm hospitality association explained that some of its members work predominantly with Russian tourists and are concerned because even though the number are not high, they spend a lot of money. According to the Hosbec hoteliers association there are more than 200,000 Russian travellers that come through Alicante-Elche airport every year.
Benidorm associations are worried that rising inflation and energy prices caused by the war will have an impact on the holiday sector at a time when is its still trying to recover from two years of pandemic restrictions. The situation is far from inspiring confidence to local hotel, bars and restaurant owners. Hosbec is predicting a minimum occupancy of around 66 percent towards that end of
Farmers rejoice over recent rain Local farmers are claiming the recent rains have saved crops and vineyards across the provinces of Alicante and Murcia. The Alicante Young Farmers Association has said that half of the areas muscatel grape harvest has been saved, as the recent storms brought more than 100 litres of rain per square Metre. Fruit, Olive and cherry trees have also benefited from the downfalls.
March across its member hotels and it is hoped that Easter will see British visitors return to prepandemic levels. March has seen more hotels and tourist-reliant businesses reopen. In Benidorm more than 70 Hosbec hotels are welcoming guests, with 10 opening just recently. However, this still leaves more than a third that have yet to open their doors and resume trading.
Moors and Christians to go ahead
After a two-year gap due to the pandemic, the streets of Orihuela will host its Fiesta de la Reconquista, known as the Moors and Christians in July this year. A statement from the Association of Moors and Christians said: “It seems that, at last, we are reaching the end of this exceptional situation making it possible to hold the event with minimal anti-covid measures.”
Western officials have “serious concerns” that Vladimir Putin will resort to the use of chemical weapons as Russia’s military forces remain bogged down in Ukraine. Despite the unanticipated success of Ukrainian forces in holding back Putin’s tank columns and maintaining a level of air defence, the Russian dictator shows no sign of letting up on his assault, said one official. He is “burning through a lot of high-end kit” and taking significant numbers of casualties in his armed forces, raising fears that he may respond to Ukrainian resistance by escalating levels of violence or even deploying non-conventional weapons. Asked whether this could include chemical weapons, a Western official said: “I think we’ve got good reason to be concerned about the possible use of non-conventional weapons, partly because we’ve seen what has happened in other theatres - for example in Syria - partly because we see a bit of setting the scene for that in the sort of false flag claims that are coming out, and some other indications. “It’s a serious concern for us.”
The White House also publicly warned that Russia might seek to use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine. Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova this week accused Ukraine, without evidence, of running chemical and biological weapons labs in its territory with the support of the US. Joe Biden’s press
secretary Jen Psaki called Russia’s claim “preposterous” and said it could be part of an attempt by Russia to lay the groundwork for itself using such weapons of mass destruction against Ukraine. Mr Putin’s desire to bring about a swift military breakthrough may be fuelled by what appear to be growing signs of discontent among the Russian population, many of whom are shocked by the
decision to invade a country with which they have close ties and shocked by the scale of sanctions imposed in response. While the impact of sanctions is so far believed to be on the level of “inconvenience rather than hardship”, it is a major psychological blow to Russian middle classes to see brands like McDonalds, Ikea and Apple pull out of their country and find their credit cards no longer working, said one western official. There are signs that an increasingly isolated Mr Putin has miscalculated not only the willingness of Ukrainians to resist and the west to respond in a united way, but also the readiness of Russians to support his military adventure, particularly the young who are used to the material advantages which have become part of everyday life since the 1980s. “I think he didn’t understand the west,” said the official. “I’m not sure that he understood Russia. Of course some older Russians remember the 1980s with affection. But many cultural and media figures spoke out immediately and 1.2 million have now signed the No War petition, small scale protesting – 13,000 arrests so far.

SMGS at El Valle. March 9th, 2022 The weather definitely was a blessing on our Wednesday outing to El Valle. However, it did not help the day having to follow a slow playing society. These days it seems to be the norm. The group in front of our society had one player who, after his tee shot, was waiting on every 200m shot in. We didn’t see one shot make it, perhaps any other day!

For most of our group the course was no bed of roses. The three division winners were well in front of the pack. Hopefully Darren, Norman and Ian were not too lonely at the top of the leaderboard. The greens were borderline on average.. A putt like a homebound train would catch a bobble or fade and die at the hole, more like a mystery train. Our group did not see a putt sunk over 2m. Looking at the scores most members found the greens “complicated”. Given the time of year and recent weather no apologies are required. TALES FROM ThE TOP FLIGhT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Just a quiet week in the Premier League, then. Nothing really to write about this week. Minimal drama both on or off the pitch. Just a very bogstandard seven days, all told. Chelsea? Something’s happened at Chelsea? Well, it would be remiss of me to say ‘I told you so’ but I do recall passing comment in 2003 that Roman Abramovich’s purchase of Chelsea would ‘all end in lots of tears’. Nobody can say I was wrong - though I suspect the various Premier League titles, Champions League trophies, World Club Championships and world-class footballers gracing the Bridge over the last 20 years might soften the blow of me actually being right for once. Hey, I was right - I didn’t say when it would end in tears and sometimes you have to be patient for these insightful predictions to come good. I am no legal expert - the least surprising statement in this column today I am sure - but I suspect there might be some twoing and frowing between the government and Chelsea FC in the next few days whilst they come to some kind of working agreement that means the club doesn’t completely implode in the next few weeks given that they are not allowed to make any money, borrow any money or accept any money from their benefactor - yet have to pay all the money they are committed to between now and a sale happening. Players to take wage deferrals so that the club shop staff can be paid? Well, it’s not as if Romelu Lukaku is actually earning his corn right now, is it? He still seems to be putting in as much effort as the club did to remove former sponsors Three from the front of their shirts. On the pitch, Tommy T - who I
cannot imagine expected adding ‘pseudo-politician’ to his CV having left PSG - the game the Guardian were calling the “Despot Derby” (and let’s not get into the blind eye turned by the UK government into the ownership of - at the very least - Man City and Newcastle) was a bit flat, the main firsthalf action being Kai Havertz’s felling of man-giant Dan Burn with the most blatant elbow since Bangkok FC played a game (Google it, it’s worth it). Newcastle had every right to wonder whether officials were feeling sorry for Chelsea’s week given that a blatant shirt pull and clip of the ankles in the area also went unpunished. And when I say blatant, I challenge you to find a more blatant example of tugging of the shirt when a player runs past you in the area. You will struggle. It took a late, late reprieve for Chelsea to get the result they wanted - maybe not for the only time in March? Havertz, obviously given that he probably shouldn’t have been on the pitch, with a moment of Bergkamp-esque class to score the only goal. In football, there are plenty of players who make their team worse and make it difficult to play the way they are actually trying to play. However, there are not many like Cristiano Ronaldo that’s for sure. Without a doubt, he’s a big part of the problem at Manchester United - an utterly pointless signing trying to fix a problem they did not have. A trap set by Man City who openly pretended they were interested in signing him from Juve, knowing United would fall for it and tie up even more cash on the 37-year-old. The dressing room role model who is leaving more holes in his wake than a Pogba/Fred/McTominay midfield. Yet, the very same problem is also having the decency to be a bit of the solution - Ronaldo did very little against Tottenham other than score a hat-trick, and not just any old hat-trick to be fair. As Rangnick joked - at least, presumably it was a joke - they should
let him go to Portugal every week and just train Thursdays if that’s what he is going to deliver.
Liverpool up their offer to get him to sign that new deal he claims he would like to sign?
And if Ronaldo is the problem, he doesn’t half bail United out from time to time. Is he a bad person for thinking Harry Maguire is incredibly average? Should he be slated for being annoyed at being subbed when he sees the shower that he is playing with week in, week out? Is he wrong for not having complete 100% unwavering faith in Ralf given that he’s played for Sir Alex, Carlo and Zidane? Possibly not.
What else do West Ham have to do to convince people (me) they are a proper football team now? Stevie G has been getting rave reviews for the way he has rebuilt and unleashed Phil Coutinho yet the Moysiah saw him off easily enough at the Athletics Stadium - Yarmalenko doing his best Jarrod Bowen impression to score the first. Jacob Ramsey did his late push for the World Cup no harm at all with a late consolation for the Villa.
CR807? Depending on who you believe, Ronaldo is now the record professional goalscorer of all time. The player the Glaziers thought was ‘the Tom Brady of soccer’ scoring the record-breaking goals in front of ‘the Tom Brady of American Football’. Harry Kane’s mate, isn’t he? All in all, that was all a bit Tottenham, wasn’t it? In other news, water is wet and Leicester conceded from a corner. Arsenal are categorically better than United and their North London rivals right now and are very much the side to beat to the final Champions League spot (assuming the Premier League don’t do anything crazy and dock Chelsea points for entering administration later this month - hey, it could it happen). Alexandre Lacazette got his first goal since goodness knows when (don’t forget the seven assists in between) as Brendan Rodgers’ side did nothing to quell the rumours that they are really not very good without Jamie Vardy. Liverpool refuse to give up on the title and Brighton must be quite chuffed they already have enough points to stay up as, on recent form, they’d be getting dragged in if they had another five games extra to play. Luis Diaz looks like Liverpool’s new Mohamed Salah and their old Mohamed Salah also got on the scoresheet again - question is, will
Leeds, hammered in midweek, absolutely had to beat Norwich to ease the very real relegation fears at Elland Road. They led, they hit the bar. Bamford missed a glorious chance nice to see he is already back to his old form after injury - they hit the woodwork again. Then, of course, Norwich equalised (and could feel pretty annoyed to see a given penalty overturned after a quick squizz at the monitor). That would be it now, surely - in the post-Bielsa era? Take the point, lick the wounds. Just don’t attack in case you lose. Not a bit of it - Leeds went down the other end and nicked a winner. The turning point? That win moved Leeds two points clear of the drop zone, Watford closing the gap a bit with a surprising 2-1 away at Southampton. Those three points for Uncle Roy moved him level with his former England midfielder, Frank Lampard who led his Everton side to yet another defeat. Not his fault though, remember? All Rafa. All Rafa! And maybe a bit of the board. But, according to Everton fans, mainly Rafa. The Ev do have three games in hand but based on their current form, they’ll lose them all. Brentford will be playing Premier League football again next season, which is very much the right place for Ivan Toney’s penalties to be scored. Thomas Frank’s striker scored his fifth in two games - heading home Christian Eriksen’s cross and then scoring from the spot, just like he always does.
Winner once again was Nick Bastock, drawn on peg 10 on the cold side he caught mainly carp and the odd barbel on both slow sinker and method for 16.66kg. Richard Smith took second place from the end peg 7 with 14.84kg of carp on the pellet and method. I was once again third with 10.68kg from the same peg 11. This time all caught on the bottom but again with pellet.
ITS NICK NICK AT ThE DOUBLE AT ARGOS Abbey Angling and Rods N Reels On Tuesday the 8th of May we made the journey into Murcia to fish the fantastic Embalse De Argos near Caravaca De la Cruz for two consecutive matches. Day one was fished in very overcast conditions following the very heavy rains of the previous few days. Upon arrival the temperature was a lowly 2 degrees and we expected the fishing to be tough. This was in fact the case but we still had a great time. Winner on day 1 was Nick Bastock,
drawn on the cold side on peg 6 after a very slow start the fish suddenly turned up and he caught carp after carp for 17.52kg. He fished the method feeder with red robin pellets at about 30 metres. In second place, making a welcome return after a short illness was Barry Smith. Drawn on peg 10 on the cold side he fished a mixture of feeders but mainly with maggot for 16.80kg. Barry would have won the match but for a Harry Houdini carp that managed to jump out of his landing net and grasp
back into the water whilst unhooking it. In third place was myself, Ian Brown. I was also on the cold side on peg 11 and caught 8 barbel and 2 carp all on the slow sinking feeder with 6mm pellet for 11.28kg. The pairs event was won by Paul Burton and Nick Bastock with 25.26kg. The other section winner was Graham Patterson with 5.06kg from peg 1. The following day we once again had a very cold start but the temperature warmed up to about 18 degrees.
The other section winner was Richard Wood from peg 4 with 7.92kg. We decided to have a triples competition and this was a very tight affair but was won by myself, Nick and Barry with 30.78kg taking victory by just less than a kilo. Method Brown the beef in the butter over a medium-high heat. Work in batches as to not crowd the pan. Sprinkle salt over the beef as it browns. Transfer to slow cooker Add the onions and celery to the pan in which you just browned the beef. Sauté the onions and celery until they begin to brown at the edges, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato puree and mix well. Cook for a minute or two, then add a little of the Guinness to deglaze the pan. Transfer the celery and onions into the slow cooker. Add the rest of the Guinness, stock, vegetables, thyme and salt. Cover the slow cooker and cook on “high” for 4 hours, or “low” for 8 hours. When done, add more salt to taste. Sprinkle with fresh parsley to serve.
What to do if a neighbour blocks your views with an unlicenced extension and what to do if you want to protect your unlicenced extension against the objections of your neighbours Suddenly a block wall creeps up your boundary wall blocking your views, suddenly your relationship with your neighbour tenses. As the wall rises, the conflict raises, no way back. What to do? It’s the Town Hall that cares about planning infractions. So the first and only simple step is to go to the Town Hall and fill in a standard registration form with your name and NIE number instructing them to inspect the property in question. The Town Hall technicians are enforced by law to investigate, and if they find the building work unlicenced, they will start a fining procedure against the owner. Moreover, if the building work doesn’t meet the necessary planning standards, they will also file a demolition order, which will also be registered at the land registry. For the above reason, as you can imagine, the existence of a fining process will dramatically impact the value of any property. The cost of fines will vary between Town Halls, size of the extension, etc., but can easily be over 300€-600€ per sqm. (EG a fine for a 20sqm shed, can very easily reach 6,000-12.000€). Please bear in mind that in Spain, fining processes are excruciating and can easily end up in a court case and demolition, so whenever denouncing, you are putting the owner in a lot of trouble.
However, the Spanish system, being very painful with fines and demolitions orders, also makes it easy to obtain a Retrospective Licence when the unlicenced building work has been standing for some years with no objections. That being the case, the conditions to Obtain a Retrospective Licence for an extension built without a proper building licence are: - In Murcia, to obtain a Retrospective Licence the building work already done must be at least 4 years old. - In Almeria, the building work needs to be over 6 years old. - In Alicante, the building work needs to have been completed before August 2010 If you want to protect yourself against any denuncia from your neighbours, police or building inspectors, currently the process for obtaining a Retrospective Licence is trouble-free, straightforward and only Spanish architects are able to issue them. Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension, requiring only your NIE and current Title-Deeds. Afterwards, the Retrospective Licence is stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised and delivered within 10 working days (guaranteed). The price of a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is
229€ IVA incl. and for Extensions 326€ IVA incl. (All extensions in the property included). Martinez de la Casa Architects is the Number One company for Building Certification, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€incIVA) and Habitation/ Occupation Licences and Retrospective Licences.
