Concerns over Cala Mosca continue after the court rejected a legal demand to suspend construction of 2200 new houses and apartments on cala mosca, the last undeveloped stretch of orihuela costa, local political party c.L.a.r.o. affirms that the developer, Gomendio, is now claiming that the rejection enables the start of building works and that cala mosca will be a landmark environmental project. meanwhile, a case to nullify the orihuela council approval of
the construction project is being considered. c.L.a.r.o.’s spokesperson told the press at the weekend, “Gomendio’s claim that building 2200 new homes on cala mosca, the last area of natural coast land remaining on orihuela costa, would be an environmentally friendly project is preposterous. it would constitute the loss of the last green area on the 16 kilometre orihuela coast free from bricks and
cement and endanger two species, a rare flower and a snail, that are vulnerable and protected by european Union directives. his claims that he would create an extensive micro reserve area that would ensure unparalleled protection to these species is unbelievable. it flies in the face of the neglect which he has shown to their protection before any building takes place.” c.L.a.r.o., previously presented a petition with over 7,000 signatures to the european Parliament and succeeded in halting the development. the party recently submitted a complaint to SeProna, the environmental arm of the Guardia civil, denouncing the abandonment of the two species which were originally protected by mesh fencing. a party spokesperson explained, “over the years, the mesh fencing has been allowed to collapse. a few remaining traces of it lie in tatters on the ground. it no longer prevents walkers, cyclists and dogs from destroying the habitat
of these two rare species.” abandoned mesh fencing intended to protect two endangered species on cala mosca transport authorities have voiced concerns over plans to urbanise cala mosca. the ministry claims that the decision to go ahead with development disregards their objections to the plan which would greatly increase the already congested road traffic on the national road, the n332 which is the main exit from the planned development. c.L.a.r.o. indicated “the court has not yet considered the substance of the case against the orihuela town council, only the demand that during the proceedings building works should not go ahead. claiming that rejection of this demand enables works to start is a public relations exercise by Gomendio to put pressure on the orihuela town council to grant licenses which are required before building can take place.” c.L.a.r.o. also claims that the developer is ignoring other

outstanding legal, environmental and social considerations which should prevent construction of a mega project which would add 20% to the registered population of orihuela costa and risks a serious deterioration in the already deficient services and facilities available to residents. the legal and environmental considerations include a provision in pending legislation called PatiVeL which would prevent building on about one third of cala mosca unless construction is completed by may, 2023. this legislation is currently subject to appeals by major developers in Valencia opposed to the limitation of land on which they can build. if Continued on page 8

Education to hire extra teachers and provide prefab classrooms for Ukrainian refugee children the ministry of education has revealed its plan for the effective schooling of children displaced by the war in Ukraine. the ministry has initiated a special protocol for schools so that children can be enrolled quickly without waiting for all the necessary paperwork, but teachers also demanded more details on the long term plans. education officials have promised to provide both primary and secondary schools with “all the necessary teachers” for adequate attention to Ukrainian students. the news was communicated to school principals across the province by the regional secretary and number two of education, miguel Soler. a meeting, which had previously been requested in order to plan staffing at smaller schools that do not have classes at all levels, or those that are managed across several locations, (so-called grouped rural centres) has served to address an already pressing situation for the Valencian region educational system due to the steady influx of students displaced by the war. Soler admits that the efforts of the ministry at this time are focused on the province of alicante, which is the Valencian province with the largest number of students of Ukrainian nationality. this circumstance, he explained, acts as an ‘attraction effect’
for the grouping of new families arriving from the conflict zone, mainly to towns in the Vega Baja area, according to preliminary data gathered by the ministry. “Support teachers will be sent immediately to these centres,” confirmed the regional secretary for education. he also told the press, “We have spoken with the Presidency of the Generalitat and we have been told that everything that is necessary will be provided.” he also specified that it is not about hiring teachers for all schools or for each child who comes, saying “We are talking about centres with a significant group of students”, or new teachers who will be able to work at more than one school to organize groups of students who require intensive language learning. education plans to prolong these extra contracts for at least two or three months in principle, until the end of this academic year. Some schools in the area have requested that education officials act fairly regarding the distribution of the Ukrainian children who are arriving, so as not to neglect the students who are already receiving support in the subjects in which they are weak, and that if these resources were redirected for children displaced by the war, these
students would suffer. the regional secretary specified that most of the extra hiring of teachers is aimed at language specialists. on the other hand, education is planning the installation of prefabricated classrooms in areas where extra classrooms are needed. “in emergency situations it is necessary to act with emergency measures and although we must try to avoid installing provisional classrooms where there is no work in progress, it is foreseeable that they will be needed in Vega Baja,” said Soler. torrevieja, for example, already has full classrooms and has demanded “extraordinary measures”, because although the surrounding rural area has school places, there are no houses there to accommodate the families that come from areas ravaged by the war. Soler pointed out that even if the families are initially housed in torrevieja, they may end up moving to another municipality. the natural thing, he concluded, is for them to be “where there are family and friends”, so new classrooms will be created “in spaces where we can”, and support them from the start so that they can “learn Spanish well.”

Largest health insurance increase in a decade
it seems the global pandemic has prompted an increase in people taking out private health insurance policies rather than relying on the public system with figures released this week indicating that the alicante province has registered the largest increase in a decade of people taking out health insurance. experts believe that delays of a year for operations or specialist appointments have prompted people to take their healthcare into their own hands, claiming that the coronavirus pandemic has caused the public health system to burst at the seams. more and more people in the province of alicante have had to resort to private insurance in order to speed up consultations with the doctor. in the province of alicante there are now 314,209 people who pay for a private policy, according to data from Unespa, the business association of insurance companies. this is the highest number of insured persons in the province since 2011. in 2021 alone the sector increased by 26,000 insured persons, the highest annual growth figure recorded in a decade and almost double that of 2020. For rosa atiénzar, health spokesperson at the ccoo union, the relationship between the pandemic and the increase in health insurance is clear and she calls for urgent solutions. “one of the risks of not having sufficient resources in public health is that it ends up being privatized.” atiénzar has urged health authorities
to strengthen the public system to avoid inequalities and not end one of the pillars of Spain’s health system, which is to offer the same health care to all of the population, regardless of where they live. “Who can really afford health insurance? Social inequalities are accentuating, because those who do not have resources have fewer opportunities to protect their health”. atiénzar calls for hospitals to be reinforced once and for all, but above all health centres, and for the GdP allocated to other european countries to be invested. “in Spain, investment is around 5.8%, while the average for the european Union is 7.5%,” she explained. President of the Patient ombudsman association, carmen Flores, regrets that the private sector is reaping “numerous benefits with referrals that public health is making and the increase in the private insurance sector” during the pandemic. however, warned Flores, this increase in the private sector is causing private clinics to suffer waiting lists for the first time. Unespa, the insurance company association, maintains that public and private health “are not rivals, but rather complement each other” and believe that the growth of the medical insurance sector is due to its own merits. “medical insurance is successful because its products that are marketed at competitive and accessible prices, the available offer is wide and has differential characteristics.”
in the province of alicante there are a total of 23,072 people waiting to undergo surgery, of which 5,402 have been waiting for more than 6 months. in terms of specialists, there are departments that have up to a year long waiting list for an ordinary appointment in specialties such as ophthalmology, dermatology and ent (ear, nose, throat). the ministry of health has promised that this year, staff of hospitals and health centres will increase by 6,000 people from the month of april.

What is colon cancer: detection, surgery and prevention colorectal cancer is the most common malignant cancer in Spain and has second highest mortality rate. it is estimated that 32,000 new cases are diagnosed each year (15% of all tumours detected, with a prevalence of 102 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and that more than 14,000 people die annually. however, despite its high incidence, colon cancer is also one of the most treatable, since with early diagnosis, it can be cured in 90% of cases. how is colon cancer detected? initial symptoms and clinical tests in its early stages, colon cancer is usually asymptomatic. even so, dr. Pedro Bretcha, former president of the Spanish Society of Surgical oncology and head of surgical oncology at Quirónsalud alicante and torrevieja, explains some of the symptoms that can alert us to the presence of this disease. “any persistent change in bowel habits, including diarrhoea or constipation, or a change in the consistency of the stool, can indicate the presence of colon cancer. other initial symptoms more indicative of the disease are rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, cramps and pains in the abdominal area, the feeling that the intestine does not empty completely, weakness, fatigue or weight loss without apparent cause,” explained dr. Bretcha. currently, there are several clinical tests to detect colon cancer, including colonoscopy (every 10 years), ct colonography (every 5 years) or sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years). Faecal occult blood tests have also
been shown to be effective and can be performed annually from the age of 50. in high-risk patients “due to family or personal history that increases the risk or suspicion” it is advisable to start checks earlier, warned dr. Bretcha. colon cancer Surgery: Laparoscopic colectomy and Sugarbaker the most common surgical technique for colon cancer is laparoscopic colectomy, which has similar results to open surgery, but has fewer risks and facilitates as well as a faster recovery time for patients. “Laparoscopic colectomy has a lower incidence of transfusions, less pain in postoperative infections and hernias, shorter hospital stays and better cosmetic results,” explained dr. Bretcha. in addition, to this technique, the quality of life of patients operated on for colon cancer is very high: “Less than 20% require a colostomy bag, recovery from colon cancer surgery is faster and the vast majority can lead a life practically the same as before the intervention.” another of the techniques available is the “Sugarbaker” technique and involves the removal of all the visible tumor followed by chemotherapy in intraoperative hyperthermia (at 43 °c) to eliminate non-visible malignant cells, since heat enhances the effect of chemotherapy. thanks to this intervention, the survival of this subgroup of patients can double. the oncological surgery team at hospital Quirónsalud torrevieja was one of the first to introduce this technique in Spain in 2001. Since then, their team has performed hundreds of procedures.
the specialists of the oncological Surgery Service of Quirónsalud torrevieja point out that this type of intervention is quite complex and requires extensive training, with multidisciplinary teams, and specialization in oncological surgery. these efforts are rewarded by excellent results in the treatment of colon cancer after surgery. treatment with hiPec makes it possible to combine high intensity chemotherapy, focused on the affected area, with less systemic toxicity. can colon cancer be prevented? the answer is that there is no way to prevent it 100%, although we can reduce or eliminate some risk factors (poor diet, alcohol, tobacco and a sedentary lifestyle). nevertheless, there are other factors we cannot change, including: • Aging (Most cases are detected after the age of 50) • History of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps • History of inflammatory bowel disease • Family history

the opinion of environmental groups is accepted, similar proposed legislation, Pat for VeGa BaJa, which includes orihuela costa, would classify all of cala mosca as belonging to the green infrastructure of the area and would prevent the planned urbanization. c.L.a.r.o. has joined these environmental groups in supporting this amendment to the proposed legislation. But the most immediate, serious obstacle to construction on cala mosca is the objection by the ministry of transport.
• Ethnic and racial background (For example, in the US, black people have higher colorectal cancer incidence and death rates) • Type 2 diabetes - Both type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer share risk factors in 5% of cases, the appearance of colon cancer is associated with hereditary genetic changes (mutations). the most common are Lynch syndrome (hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer or hnPcc) and familial polyposis adenomatous (FaP). mortality from colorectal cancer has greatly decreased in recent decades. this is fundamentally due to early detection and the improvement of the surgical approach, which is increasingly more precise and less invasive. Proof of this is that, in localized tumors, mortality after surgery is below 2%. For this reason, the specialists of the oncological surgery team at hospital Quirónsalud torrevieja emphasize the importance of regular check-ups and adopting a healthier lifestyle to prevent this disease. consult your doctor if you have doubts or concerns.
National Police smash Torrevieja cocaine gang Police in torrevieja have dismantled a criminal gang that used ‘tuned up’ cars to conceal drugs. reports this week revealed that officers discovered 11 kilos of cocaine hidden in a secret compartment built into the floor of a car and another 3 kilos in second car, hidden behind the dashboard. according to the press liaison of the national Police, three people were arrested in the operation. those arrested are accused of using “sophisticated” drug concealment techniques with hydraulic mechanisms. the drugs would be concealed in modified cars with the hope of going unnoticed when passing through a police checkpoint. the members of the group, who police claim did not hesitate to use violence and possessed firearms, were arrested when they were transporting 11 kilos of cocaine hidden in a compartment located in the floor of a vehicle and another three kilos in the dashboard of a second vehicle. in total, 15 kilos of cocaine, 25,000 euros in cash, three handguns and four vehicles, two of them with hidden compartments for transporting the drug, were seized by police. the investigation began
when police became aware of the existence of the gang, whose members were based in the alicante province area. officers believed the gang to be engaged in the distribution of cocaine and frequently changing cars to avoid being detected by the authorities. in addition the vehicles were registered in the name of a third party who agreed to appear as the owner, thus facilitating the anonymity of the gang members. once enough evidence was gathered, national Police gave the green light to the operation to arrest the suspects
in torrevieja, during which they intercepted two of the vehicles used by the organization. at the time of the arrest, one of the members of the group rammed the police vehicle causing injuries of varying degrees to three of the police officers. after the initial arrests, officers carried out two house raids, one of them in Urbanova (alicante), where three loaded handguns were found as well as a dagger and 20,500 euros in cash hidden in different parts of the house; in another raid, carried out in torrevieja, a kilo of cocaine and 3,500 euros were found.

school supplies for the children. thanks also go to Werner Wilmes, who donated two laptops for the school’s teachers to use. due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, there are many refugees who have been forced to flee to other countries, including Spain. torrevieja is specifically favoured by many Ukrainian families as there is already a well established Ukrainian community here. , a few weeks ago, the director of the school for Ukrainian children requested help to solve the great demand for new places due to the arrival of refugees with school-age children. the n332 association, represented by Francisco Javier morales, immediately took this request on boad and several school material collection points were quickly set up in different towns in the area. thanks to the collective effort, the donation of a
massive amount of school material was achieved, in addition to the laptops that were delivered to the director natalia Zhezhnyauska. natalia thanked everyone for all the help given, and gave thought to all those children who are still in the Ukraine and unfortunately cannot continue their studies. a reminder of local donation points for school supplies, food and hygiene products on behalf of n332: Pinar de Campoverde danny´s grill bar (avda. de las especias nº94) Orihuela Costa ibex office (c/Flores nº1) mabeq (c/ Paraná nº50) Torrevieja movilSystem and Patinverde (c/apolo nº51) La Siesta clinic (c/rossini nº1) Los Montesinos Leddy homes (c/San miguel nº9)

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner chorus Financial chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in Spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. a number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the UK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to Brexit. there is a lot of confusion in this area so i will do my best to share what we know so far. Before Brexit, the Spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the dGS and cnmV – allowed UK regulated entities to advise those of us living in Spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When Britain left the eU, those rights were removed for UK based firms. in preparation for Brexit Spain published article 13 of the royal decree Law (which you can read here: http://www.cnmv.es/Portal/ Brexit/FaQ-rdL.aspx?lang=en). Within this, the cnmV have confirmed that, according to article
13(3) of the rdL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in Spain while domiciled in the United Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. in more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your UK iFa, they could have continued to provide service to you until 30th June 2021. this extension was granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your iFa to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in Spain. i wanted to further clarify this with the Fca, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the eea need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can
provide services to Spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of Spanish law.” With this response the Fca are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the Spanish regulator’s position in terms of advising those of us who live in Spain. So where does this leave you if you still have a UK iFa? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly. it may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the eU and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in Spain. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. the Fca have set incredibly high standards for UK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent and appropriate. You should expect that standard to continue here in Spain. in simple terms, transparency means
your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. i would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. remember, many products and funds in Spain still pay advisers non-disclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the UK many years ago. this can make your overall fees incredibly high. one big clue is that if a product has a tie-in, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your investment value. You should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. of course, if you really want to be sure, then speak to a chorus Financial adviser for a recommendation – this is always free and without pressure or obligation, so you can explore your options and make the best decision for you. call chorus Financial today on +34 965 641 163, emailinfo@chorusfinancial. es or visit www.chorusfinancial.es for more information.
Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP having waxed lyrical last week about how well the pound had been holding up given the circumstances, low and behold, this week started with sterling playing catch-up, or rather, selling-off. markets struggled a bit initially to find the root cause for the decline, some analysts pointed toward how the UK economy would struggle in a land of weaker global growth, driven by the war in Ukraine. Perhaps the increasing pressure on the chancellor, as he tries to grapple with higher inflation, even higher energy costs, and the increasing cry for lower taxes to help the consumer, played a big part in the thinking here. that seems the most digestible argument to me, given that wages are by no means keeping up with inflation, and we are only just about seeing the higher cap energy costs filter through to the end consumer. that was before this latest price rises in commodities, by the way. So, the imminent spring Budget will see the chancellor having to be more magical than Paul daniels, and that creativity will also require some more of that magic fairy dust being scattered on increased defence spending, as the dark clouds of stagflation threaten to circle above. as i said at the top, the pound started the week on the backfoot. GBP/USd had declined from 1.3400 to 1.3200 last week, with most of that on the back of that stronger February U.S Labor report. this week, GBP/USd continued the decline, dipping under 1.3100 for a spell, and then rebounding a touch in-line with the broader dollar decline on Wednesday. GBP/eUr had a fascinating week too. having reached a top nearing 1.2200 on tuesday, the pound then fell sharply back to below 1.1900 by the end of the week. those moves were more about the eUr (see next section), than anything sterling-specific, given the light UK data schedule to be had this week. next week’s Boe meeting promises to be intriguing, if not quite as exciting as the ecB.
having already raised UK rates twice, and given the conflict in Ukraine, there may be more of a reason for the Boe to take a pause, whilst they assess the impact on the economy. in the meantime, the housing market seems to be ignoring those rate rises, for now at least. EURO Sorry USd, but the eUr really is the most interesting currency in G10 just now. Last week saw periods of intense volatility amongst the eUr crosses. First, we saw a further sell-off for the single currency, driven of course by the war in Ukraine. the worry to markets was how exposed europe is to russian energy, and how that all fed into the impact for the european economy going forward. Understandably so, perhaps. eUr/USd had slipped from 1.1400 to 1.0800 in just over 2 weeks, as a consequence. GBP/ eUr, as we said above, nearly reached 1.2200. it was a similar picture (of weaker eUr) across the board for the single currency. then we had the comeback. not quite at rocky levels, but a combination of factors drove the strong move higher. Positive risk appetite in markets played a big part, but the impending ecB meeting also caused traders to take a pause. that ecB meeting then did yield a big surprise. markets had convinced themselves that the ecB would baulk at the prospect of ending Qe early or raising rates in the region sooner now that future growth prospects were in question, however, the ecB didn’t read the script. Lagarde& co instead said that they would look to increase the pace of tapering, or reduce its bond-buying scheme earlier than initially planned, to you and me. they also dropped the necessity to end Qe ahead of raising rates. Small point, but that matters because if you can’t hike/won’t hike until you have ended Qe, then when you end Qe matters most. So, the chances of a rate hike from the ecB this year could be back on the table, albeit at a push.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally having worked in the scrap business on the costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to find that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating fines, many months later. there are car owners on the costa Blanca who have faced large fines after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle. here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much different from anything you are likely to be used to ireland or the UK. if you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust. one such company is Bradley Breakers. they are experts in the field and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will
make you a cash offer for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you. they will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been officially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the official dGt certificate (Baja). do be aware that, if this is something that you are currently considering, you need to ensure that your vehicle is scrapped by 31 december to avoid any further SUma bills. Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. it saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.”
Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. all parts are recorded on a computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse. You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers. contact Bradley Breakers central in english on (0034) 607 848 332 or drop an e-mail to bradleybreakerscatral1@ outlook.com. Derry Girls trailer released on St Patrick’s Day The Derry Girls season three trailer dropped recently, just in time for St Patrick’s Day of course. The Channel 4 comedy drama that follows a group of Northern Irish schoolgirls (and one “wee English fella”), is written by Lisa McGee and partly based on her own experiences growing up during the Troubles. While season one was set in 1990s Derry and season two was set during the peace process, the third will show that, even if Northern Ireland is growing up, “this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon”. Fans of the show could barely contain their excitement on Twitter, with one person writing: “I’m doing cartwheels.” “Oh my god there are no words on earth to describe how much I love Derry Girls,” added another. A third said: “Canna even begin to express how buzzin I am for the new series of Derry Girls.” Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa
Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn will all return to the cast to play the teenagers, along with Siobhan McSweeney as the straight-talking Sister Michael. The release date for Derry Girls season three (the show’s last) hasn’t been announced yet, but is being billed as “coming soon”.

Rolling Stones come to Spain Legendary rockers The Rolling Stones will be performing a one night only gig in Spain in the spring as part of an anniversary tour. Now down to three, after the death of Charlie Watts at the age of 80 in August, but still probably one of the longest-running bands on the planet, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards have just announced their world SIXTY tour to celebrate the Rolling Stones’ landmark anniversary of as many years. The trio, now aged 78 (Mick and Keith) and 74 (Ronnie), will be playing live in 10 countries, but with their début SIXTY performance in Madrid. They will hit the Wanda Metropolitan Centre on 1st June, with all-new production and a new design of their iconic lips-andtongue logo, which was originally the creation of a London art college student in the 1970s, who was paid a whopping £50 (about €57.50) for his efforts.

This June will see the Stones back in Madrid for the first time in eight years – their last visit was in 2014 as part of their On Fire tour, then with Charlie still on the team, at Real Madrid FC’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium. And Los Rolling, as they are referred to in Spain, have met several generations of their fan-base from the stage: Probably the most memorable concert among those who were old enough to watch them live 40 years ago was at the nowdefunct CF Atlético de Madrid stadium on 7th July, 1982, when the heavens opened, soaking the band. For those who will be in the UK at the time of the SIXTY tour, the concert at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium on June 9 will be the first in the north-western British city in over 50 years, making it a once-in-a-lifetime – or twice in the average lifetime – event; otherwise, for those based further south, two dates are planned at London’s BST Hyde Park, on 25th June and 3rd July.

5G hits local towns Living in Spain is good for mental health Vodafone will connect a total of 141 municipalities in the Valencian Community with 5G, progressively until the end of the year, after acquiring 2×10 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band. In the first phase the operator has included 15 rural towns with less than 1,000 inhabitants and 94 municipalities with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, 18 with fewer than 50,000 and 14 with more than 50,000. In total, more than 3.6 million Valencians will be able to access the 5G service that has already been available in the capitals of Valencia, Alicante and Castelló for some time. In the local province of Alicante the municipalities that will have the 5G service are: Alcoi, Benidorm, Elda, Sant Vicent del Raspeig, Albatera, l’Alfàs del Pi, Almoradí, Altea, Benissa, Busot, Callosa de Segura, Calp, el Campello, Castalla, Cocentaina, Cox, Crevillent, Daya Nueva, Dénia, Elx, Gata de Gorgos, Ibi, Llíber, Monforte delCid, Los Montesinos, Muro d’Alcoi, Mutxamel, la Nucia, Ondara, Orihuela, Pedreguer, Pilar de la Horadada, els Poblets, Polop, Rafal, Relleu, Rojales, La Romana, San Miguel de Salinas, Sax, Vila Joiosa, Guardamar del Segura, Castell de Castells, Xàbia, Sant Joan d’Alacant, Santa Pola, Tibi, Torrevieja, el Verger and Alicante . Thanks to the 5G network, the residents of these municipalities will have the speed and connectivity to download content five times faster than with 4G, the ability to view or play online without delays and the possibility of having a greater number of devices connected automatically simultaneously without losing quality of service.
In addition, the 5G network at the 700 MHz frequency will make it possible to expand the coverage footprint extensively and offer better coverage such as from inside buildings, with high bandwidth availability. Antonio Álvarez, regional director of Vodafone, said: “One of the great accelerators of digitisation is 5G and for this reason, already in 2019, we decided that we had to be the first operator to market this service to our customers in the Valencian Community.” The Levante director explained that the 5G network was already available in Alicante, Castelló and València, and added ‘we will end the year with a total presence in 141 municipalities, with the aim of leaving no one behind and accelerating the recovery and taking advantage of the digital transformation’.
A new study of 34 countries has placed Spain second only to Venezuela for countries whose populations have the best mental health. The survey of 223,000 people looked at a variety of areas and factors in order to determine the rankings. This included: mood and outlook, how we relate to ourselves and other people, drive and motivation. Of the top ten countries, six were Spanish speaking. The UK had the joint lowest mental health score, along with South Africa. The report highlighted a link between living in an Englishspeaking country and poor mental health. The USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland all ranked in the bottom ten countries surveyed.

Galaxy goes white and vegan If there’s one thing we know vegans miss, it’s chocolate. So, back in 2020, the news that Galaxy was launching vegan chocolate was welcomed with open arms. At the time, Mars, which makes Galaxy, launched not one, not two, but three dairy-free flavours for its vegan fans: Caramelised Hazelnut, Caramel & Sea Salt and Smooth Orange. Then came two wildly exciting new flavours hit supermarket shelves: Crumbled Cookie and Smooth Mint! And now Galaxy is launching its first ever vegan white chocolate bar. The wonderful news was announced on Instagram, with a shared image of the new bar, which is set to launch in the UK soon - and will hopefully, through our overseas stores, hit the shelves here in Spain pretty quickly too. Galaxy’s vegan bars have been certified by the Vegan Society. And as well as the bars being animal-friendly, the packaging is also eco-friendly as its made from a compostable film packaging and wood fibre that can be composted at home. Speaking about the launch in 2020, Kerry Cavanaugh, marketing director at Mars Wrigley, said: “We’re so excited to be bringing these delicious
treats to Galaxy’s range using a vegan recipe that doesn’t compromise on the brand’s signature smooth and creamy characteristics. “Wherever you look you can’t avoid the vegan buzz. Even though vegan treats are currently only worth £10 million in a £4 billion chocolate market, we think that by introducing Galaxy, one of the UK’s best-known brands, there is a huge opportunity for the category to grow.” Abigail Stevens, the trademark m a r k e t i n g manager at the Vegan Society, added: “We’re proud to register Galaxy’s first ever non-dairy milk chocolate bars with our vegan trademark. The brand has demonstrated that dairy is not necessary to make great
tasting chocolate, and that people can still enjoy their favourites without the use of animals.”

Reduce your food budget
As prices rise noticeably, many of us are looking for ways to reduce your monthly grocery bill without sacrificing nutrition and sticking to a healthy diet. Here’s a few tips you can follow...
Avoid pre-packed Convenience foods may save you time, but they cost you in the long run. In fact, prechopped fruits and veggies can cost up to three times more than whole, unpackaged produce. Go Frozen Buying frozen is a healthier and more affordable choice. Fruits and veggies, fish, and seafood are frozen at their peak freshness, ensuring great flavour and high nutritional value. Plus, going frozen can be 50 percent cheaper than buying fresh. Eat less meat With meat prices on the rise, embracing alternative protein sources can have a big impact on your bank account. Beans, legumes, soy, and buckwheat
are all nutritious and low-cost protein substitutes.
grains, and beans, are cheap, healthy, and versatile.
Grow your own Growing veggies and herbs can be a great way to eat organic while saving money and reducing waste.
Make snacks Healthy snacks can be pricey, especially if you buy them in large quantities. To keep the munchies at bay and save money, try making your own snacks at home. Nutritious treats, like trail mix, roasted chickpeas, flavoured popcorn, and muffins, can be made in bulk at low cost.
Plan ahead It may sound overly simple, but making - and sticking to - a weekly meal plan is one of the best ways to limit your food expenses and reduce waste. Once you have your week’s meals mapped out, you can maximize the ingredients you already have on hand and buy only what you need. Stock up Given their almost limitless shelf life, it’s easy to forget about the non-perishables in the back of your pantry. If you get creative and buy wisely, though, they can help you save time and money. Basic items, like canned produce, canned fish, whole
Go local and seasonal Fruits and vegetables are cheaper when they’re in season and bountiful, so aligning your eating habits with the calendar can benefit your wallet. It also has health benefits, since peakseason produce has more nutrients, not to mention better flavour. Try the wonderful array of fruit, veg and nuts available at the local markets on the Cost a Blanca – you’ll get so much more for your money than in the supermarket.

Ditch the cheese for a great night’s sleep Those struggling to get a good night’s sleep are being advised about foods to avoid eating before heading to bed. Unsurprisingly, any kind of cheese is off the menu, as are curries and packets of crisps. In order to improve and prolong your sleep certain foods like dried fruit, tomatoes and ice cream, no matter how tempting, should be avoided as they will make sleep trickier. If you’ve tried every sleep remedy under the sun, but still can’t nod off, it might be down to the food you are eating in the evening and just before you doze off to sleep. There are loads of factors that play into getting a good sleep and when it becomes harder than usual, it’s a good idea to eliminate factors, like these foods, to help find a solution. “What we eat often holds the key to a restful night. So, if you are struggling to sleep and find yourself reaching for a snack, be careful in your choice. Chocolate There are super high levels of caffeine in chocolate, making it a terrible choice for later in the evening and at night. Caffeine is more likely to cause rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, making you more likely to feel groggy in the morning. Other foods and drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks
should also be avoided for at least four to six hours before you plan on sleeping.
Dried fruit The fibre in fruit is great in moderation. However, when consumed at night it can leave people feeling bloated and gassy. Like fresh fruit, they also contain high levels of sugar, which can give you an energetic high. Cheese While cheese is generally thought of as comfort food, it is one of the worst to eat before bed. Amino acids are found in lots of strong and aged cheeses, and they cause us to feel awake and alert. Also known as tyramine, it causes our bodies to feel alert through the adrenal gland, which releases the ‘fight or flight’ hormone. The same goes for preserved and cured meats such as bacon, ham, and pepperoni. Curry The chemical capsaicin is often found in spicy foods like curries and hot sauces. It elevates body temperature by interfering with the body’s thermoregulation process. In turn, it can disrupt sleep, not to mention the high levels of energy required to digest spices. Sweets No matter how tempting it
is to have a sweet treat before bed, it’s a bad idea for anyone, especially those struggling to sleep. Sugary foods, like ice cream, cakes and sweets send blood sugar levels spiking, followed by a crash. This crash in blood sugar alerts the adrenals that there is an emergency, which, in turn, increases cortisol levels, and wakes the body from slumber. Those desperate for a sweet fix before bed should consider having a banana, as they promote sleep. If the banana isn’t cutting it, mash it up and freeze it! It tastes surprisingly good.
Crisps Savoury snacks like nuts and crisps are known to dehydrate the body and increase water retention. As a result, sleep is more likely to be ‘superficial’ and disrupted. Long term, this will cause tiredness and fatigue. Experts recommend staying away from salty foods at least three hours before bed to ensure a good night’s sleep. Tomatoes Acidic foods like tomatoes should also be avoided before bed. They can cause reflux issues when you lay down. The same can be said for onions too. They sometimes cause pressure inside of the stomach and force acid into your oesophagus.
G&T is Mum’s favourite Mums admit to enjoying two G&Ts per week, with sometime between 5pm-6pm named the best time to kick back and enjoy. When looking at alcoholic beverages in general, one in five mums enjoy a special tipple at least four times-a-week. When asked about the perfect G&T ingredients Mothers voted for lemons (35 percent) over limes (27 percent) when asked what completes the perfect G&T, with one in five preferring a combination of the two.
Craft Gin Club’s poll of 2,000 mothers found 39 percent would opt for family time at home rather than at a restaurant. While 25 percent preferred time to themselves, with 13 per cent hoping for some pamper time alone. It also emerged more than a quarter (26 percent) would prefer not to have gin garnishes, but for those who do, the top 10 included lemon zest (22 percent), strawberry slices (21 percent) and raspberry slices (17
percent). Others would opt for dried orange slices (14 percent), juniper berries (14 percent) and dried grapefruit slices (10 percent). Yhe majority of mums agreed they’d rather have the perfect cocktail at home - instead of one in a bar. Craft Gin Club spokesperson, said, “We’re delighted to see that gin is still top of the wish-list for mum’s celebrating their special day this year.”

A neighbour I was kind to, will not take the hint and go away. Over the months / years I have seen what kind of person they are and I didn’t care for what I saw. This person is a manipulative user even though they cannot see it for themselves, they have been told this by others many times and lost friends because of it. Instead of learning from it, they constantly see themself as the victim. When it came to me having my own problems they were not interested, not that I asked for any help but it became clear that their problems were more important and I was

asked to help them when I needed to concentrate on a situation of my own. I have not been unkind in finishing my relationship with them, and have simply said that I am busy. I hoped that they would take the hint. I have blocked this person from contacting me, and luckily our paths don’t cross, but they are not giving up. You have tried to be kind but this has not worked, and so have resorted to preventing them from contacting you. Stick to your guns. People who use others should not be entertained. It is possible that this person is fully aware
that you are trying to drop them, but is not bothered about that; and are only interested in getting you back on board and hopes you will weaken. You tell me this person does not make any effort in remembering or taking any interest in anything about your life, so it does sound like manipulation to me. It speaks volumes that this person routinely loses friends, so don’t feel guilty about it; it sounds like they are only interested in themselves and always will be. If you do bump in to them, say a cheery hello, and say you are sorry but you have to dash. Keep it up.

Traffic Law is Updated
This week, 21stMarch to be precise, the latest amendment to the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety came into force. Its objective is mainly focused on the “review of infractions that detract points”, says Francisco Alas-Pumariño, head of the Regulations Unit of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). For the DGT, it is very clear that what is known as Permission by Points has proven to be a very valid tool to reduce accidents on roads and cities. The data corroborates it. The year 2005 (the last one without points) closed with 3,268 deaths on interurban roads, according to data from the DGT. In 2006 (the Permission for Points entered into force on July 1 of that year) the balance of fatalities was 2,989 people, and in 2021 1,004 people died in traffic accidents. More points, same fines Several specific studies on this matter indicate that around 15% of the reduction that occurred between 2005 and 2009 was directly due to the impact of the points and, even, indicates Alas-Pumariño “it contributed decisively to internalising what are the behaviours and attitudes that pose a greater risk for driving. But it was also very clear that more than 10 years had passed since its last modification (in 2009) and, as the head of the DGT Regulations Unit underlines, “it was necessary to update it to improve the efficiency of the system and adapt it to the times”. In total, the new Law contains about 50 novelties. We have already covered many of them, but we will explain the most important again: Carrying the mobile in your hand Manual manipulation of the mobile phone, browser or any other communication device while driving is prohibited. As well as the use of helmets or headphones. Yes, hands-free is allowed. WHY? Since 2016, distractions are already the leading cause of fatal accidents. In 2020, in 31% of fatal accidents, distractions were the contributing factor. Intercom between bikes The use of certified or approved wireless devices for use in the helmet for communication and navigation purposes is authorised. WHY? It is a repeated claim of the motorcycle sector, and now new technologies make it possible safely. Not using the seat belt, CRS and helmet properly It will be considered an infraction not to use a seat belt or to wear it
inappropriately, as well as applying to the CRS (child seat) for children and the helmet on motorcyclists. WHY? One in four deaths in cars or vans was not wearing a seat belt. The DGT considers that if they do not use it, it is because they do not want to, not because they do not know that it is mandatory to do so. Safe and efficient driving courses The DGT is committed to the training of drivers who want to improve their driving and make it safer and more efficient, through voluntary courses. They will be rewarded with 2 points, provided they have a positive balance. One course of each type may be taken every 2 years. WHY? They have been consolidated as a good practice. A Ministerial Order will determine its content. They are different from the awareness and re-education courses that are mandatory for drivers who have lost all their points or their driving licence. Recovery of points After 2 years without the driver being sanctioned for committing an infraction that entails deduction of points, the initial balance of points will be recovered. It does not matter if the offences are serious or very serious. WHY? Until now, 2 years had to pass if the infringement had been serious and 3 if it had been very serious. An administrative complication that did not provide more security or more driver awareness. It facilitates the communication of this rule and the understanding of the citizen. Goodbye at 20 km/h when overtaking On conventional roads, drivers may not exceed the maximum speed allowed to overtake other vehicles by 20 km/h. WHY? Two out of every three fatal accidents occur on conventional roads. Overtaking is undoubtedly a risky manoeuvre, reducing the number of these manoeuvres is to reduce the accident rate on conventional roads, a priority in road safety policy. In addition, this exception does not exist in any country in our environment. Not respecting the instructions of the agents and panels Failure to respect the signs, orders or indications of the agents in charge of the regulation, organisation, management, surveillance and discipline of traffic, as well as the indications of the variable message panels located on the roads. mandatory, and therefore punishable. Pedestrian priority Pedestrians will have priority over vehicles in crossings, on pavements and in pedestrian areas. In addition, bicycles and VMPs will not be able to circulate on the pedestrian areas. Exceptions will be established by regulation. WHY? Until now, only pedestrian crossings were mentioned, pavements and pedestrian areas have been added to cover pedestrian preference in accesses, for example. It is important to remember that at some point we are all pedestrians. Overtaking cyclists To overtake a bicycle or a moped you must keep a minimum distance of 1.5 metres. If the road has two or more lanes in each direction, it is mandatory to completely change lanes to carry out the manoeuvre. WHY? To improve the safety of this vulnerable group in their increasingly frequent journeys both by road and in urban areas. In 2020, 71 cyclists died in traffic accidents. Parking in the bike lane Stopping or parking any vehicle in the bike lanes or paths is prohibited. WHY? If it is already on the bus lanes, it seems logical that it is also on the increasingly frequent bike lanes in our cities. The bicycle is one more means of transport, more and more numerous, and we have to learn to live with it and protect this most vulnerable group. Riding a scooter on the highway or motorway The VMP (scooters) will not be able to circulate on the highway or motorway. WHY? This prohibition is already included in the Regulation of Urban Measures (the one known by the 30 km/h in the city); With this Law, it is given legal coverage necessary to sanction this infraction. Bike and scooter classes The regulations are approved so that training in the driving of bicycles and personal mobility vehicles is included in the educational programming. WHY? The DGT is strongly committed to education as the best action to reduce risks and children as the most important group. They are now and will be road users both as drivers and as pedestrians. Carrying radar inhibitors The use or its installation is prohibited, and now also the carrying of radar inhibitors or any other instrument that eludes or interferes with the operation of traffic surveillance systems, or emits or makes signals to warn of the position of a radar. WHY? These systems interfere with the proper functioning of traffic surveillance systems and put the safety of road users at risk. Zero alcohol for minors The 0 rate of alcohol (both in blood and in exhaled air) is introduced for the first time for drivers under 18 years of age (bicycles, scooters, mopeds with AM and A1 permits). WHY? If the sale of alcohol to minors is prohibited, the DGT considers their correspondence in driving logical and reasonable. In addition, in 27% of the accidents registered in 2020, the main contributing factor was alcohol. Circulate if it is restricted due to contamination or in ZBE It is mandatory to respect the traffic restrictions derived from the application of the protocols in the event of pollution episodes and in low emission zones (ZBE). WHY? The Climate Change Law obliges municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to start up these areas in 2022 and, legal coverage had to be given to the

Throwing cigarette butts The number of points lost is increased (from 4 to 6 points) for throwing objects that could cause fires or accidents onto the road or in its vicinity. WHY? Reduce the risk of road accidents and worrying damage to the environment. Cheating in exams The use of intercom devices in tests for obtaining or recovering permits or driving licences (for example, earpieces)
is prohibited. In addition to the fine, they will not be able to take the exam again for 6 months. WHY? It is a widespread practice and it is very serious that a person without adequate knowledge can obtain a licence and drive. Impersonation (someone else introduces themselves as you) is a criminal offence. The licence, on the mobile Now with the miDGT app you can prove that you have authorisation to drive. WHY? Put the facilities provided by new technologies at the service of the citizen.
Professional drivers Companies dedicated to the transport of people or goods and the self-employed who have employees are made possible to know if a professional driver who works with them has a valid driving licence, without requiring the authorisation of the worker. WHY? Transport companies demand the possibility of controlling whether their workers comply with legal requirements, are responsible and are aware of road safety. Alcolock for professionals As of July 6, 2022, newly registered
vehicles dedicated to passenger transport will have the pre-installation of so-called alcolocks (devices connected to the starting system that prevent the vehicle’s engine from starting if the driver exceeds the rate of permitted breathalyser). And your driver must use them. WHY? Mandatory regulations established by the European Union. Data for reflection In 2009, more than 1.5 million firm penalties with loss of points were imposed. In 2019, the figure was reduced to 1.1 million sanctions.26 % less. Almost 3,000 firm penalties for drug
use behind the wheel were imposed in 2009, ten years later, in 2019, the 37,000 penalties were exceeded.Increase of more than 1,000%. Between 2015 and 2019, the use of helmets by deceased motorcyclists increased by 10% on urban roads. On the same dates, the average use of seat belts in fatalities increased slightly. It went from 73% to 76%, on interurban roads. In 2006, more than 34,000 proceedings were initiated for offences against road safety for the consumption of alcohol and/or drugs while driving. In 2020, it was 57,000 procedures.

Busters Golf Society March 2022 golf report Our March game took us to La Serena, a course with plenty of water to trap you should your shot be offline, however, a little course management does help if your game is on song, we had seventeen players for our March game and as usual for Busters at La Serena we had a ball sweep of one Euro each with the closest to the number of lost balls winning the seventeen Euros pot, this being won by Terry Sharley who selected that eighty-four balls would be lost between us, he was only one out as the amount was eighty-three. The weather conditions chose to be difficult with plenty of wind that could blow your shot off course, but a good day was enjoyed by all. On our return to Little Leias bar close to Consum in Quesada for our presentation, we were welcomed by Little Leias staff who provided us with smiles and sandwiches. We greeted two new players to our society this month, they were Mark and Anita
Stokes. Onto our winners, NTP on hole three was Terry Sharley, the ninth hole being won by Rob Ashman none of our players managed to get on the green in one at hole fifteen with Ian Allison winning the seventeenth all received wine that our sponsors Little Leias provided so thank you, Ian, for the wine and sandwiches, our runner up with twenty-nine points and only beating Chris Soane on countback was Gilly Gilbert who received bottles of red and white wine also provided by the bar, however, our winning member on the day was Duncan Roberts with thirty points, I must point out the best score on the day being thirtytwo points and playing off a handicap of two, was obtained by our new member Mark Stokes who was playing his first game as a guest, finally, our soccer card winner was Rob Ashman who selected West Bromwich Albion. Monte Reverse Early Season Loss TEAM:- 1 Sergio Ruiz, 2 Pipo, 5 Victor, 10 Paco, 11 Kevin, 14 Pablo, 15 Girona, 16 Dani Saiz, 17 Pato, 25 Sergio Martinez, 24 Gocu. SUB’s:- 13 Carlos, 7 Arturo, 20 Damien, 22 Oussama, 19 Son. CD Montesinos took a three-game unbeaten streak to Albatera on Sunday, hoping to secure another precious three points towards safety, and came away with a decisive win. Having only lost twice since the turn of the year, hopes were high for a positive result, although Albatera had upset the Reds with a two-nil victory back in October. Monte started brightly and pressed with intent, high up the pitch. This caused a rather ponderous Albatera back line to rely on a bit of hoof ball to get forward at times. Chances though, were at a premium and what goalmouth action there was, was a result of defensive errors rather than incisive attacking play by both sides. Monte’s best chances in the half came from a string of corners and freekicks that were, just about, dealt with by the Albatera defence, although they more than rode their luck on several occasions. Despite all the pressure, the half ended rightly, all square. HT:- CF Sporting Albatera 0 – 0 CD Montesinos If the Reds were to prevail, they would have to rely on one of their usual “second winds” in the final period. The game, however, was delicately poised, with Albatera, having survived the first half, growing in confidence. Monte almost made the breakthrough though, when the ever-present Pato, sprang the offside trap and delicately lobbed the keeper, only to see his seemingly goal bound effort, bounce agonisingly over the bar. Still, Monte was galvanised by their bad luck and started to take the game by the scruff of the neck and on 76 minutes, got their reward, when, that man again, Pato, broke free and slid the
ball past the advancing goalie, to add to his tally of 10 for the season so far. Monte was now in reasonably full control of the game, although sporadic Albatera attacks happened they caused little problem to the staunch Reds back line. The game was home and hosed on the 88th minute when substitute Arturo smashed home a pinpoint through ball from fellow sub’, Damien. Monte survived something of a mini fight-back from Albatera, in the guise of a series of corners and free kicks, but in all honesty, the result was rarely in doubt. FT:- CF Sporting Albatera 0 – 2 CD Montesinos After The Whistle. What was a well contested and hard fought (and reasonably well reffed) game was marred at the end by an unfortunate and entirely innocent incident in the last minutes when an Albatera player, number 3, Gonzalo Gomez, suffered a tragic double fracture of his leg. The game was, quite rightly, halted and subsequently finished. The young man was eventually attended to by an ambulance as well as first aiders from his own team. We, along with all CD Montesinos supporters, sincerely wish him a speedy and full recovery. Sometimes, despite the oft quoted Shankly-ism, there are far more important things than football. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Football entered a funny time this week - no, not a time where Chelsea were rumoured to have to take a COACH to Middlesboro in the cup (they didn’t, they flew - those players have deep pockets nowadays). But a time where there was minimal Premier League action prefacing the first international break of 2022 where there will be zero Premier League action. But, there was the FA Cup - all was not lost (unless you were Everton then all was very much lost). With so few matches, football started on Friday night in an attempt to spread the very thin football jam over the weekend toast - in other words, Wolves welcomed Leeds to Molineaux. If anyone thought matches involving Leeds would be any less crazy since Bielsaball was consigned to the rubbish bin, they could not have been more wrong. A week ago, Joe Geldhardt was scoring in injury time to give Jesse Marsch his first win in the relegation-threatened hot seat. On Friday night, it was Luke Ayling doing the business in the 91st minute completing a successful comeback from 2-0 on the night. Before we credit Leeds for making the right call in asking Marcelo to leave quietly and bringing in a close enough to be similar in style, but not so mentally obsessed with ignoring the need to do some actual defending once in a while Marsch, we should ponder whether the Wolves wheels are coming off? Bruno Lage went large on some of his younger players in recent weeks and this result will not help their European push, that’s for sure. It didn’t help that Raul Jiminez was sent off, collecting his second utterly bizarre red card of the season - but, back to crediting Leeds, the visitors did lose four players to injury including their goalkeeper and (obviously) Patrick Bamford. Leeds now have a seven-point gap on Watford and will believe they
stemmed the flow just in time. 1-0 to the Arsenal, eh? For all the Gooner baiting over the years, I actually want them to get a Champions League place. They have the youngest squad, have been brave enough to stick by a manager who at times has looked a little lost, have treated the FA Cup with respect and won it (and been rubbish enough to get knocked out by Forest in this season’s 3rd round), binned off Ozil and their overpaid striker who just stopped scoring in favour of trusting said kids and made me eat massive amounts of humble pie over Aaron Ramsdale who I now actually love. Scoring early at Villa Park then easing their way to victory doesn’t feel like something any of the other top four pretenders could pull out of the bag right now. Bakayo Saka got the goal and then nearly put himself out for six months attempting a knee-slide celebration that was even worse than Lukaku’s effort all that time ago this season. If Frank Lampard broke his hand celebrating Everton’s 1-0 midweek win over Newcastle, he must have been tempted to break the other one punching anything in sight after his side fell 4-0 to Palace in the FA Cup on Sunday. Everton started well, clearly buoyed by the fact that they’d created marginal breathing space in the relegation battle they are very much in. The problem is, starting well isn’t the same as winning - and the moment England’s latest call-up Marc Guehi headed home unmarked from a corner you knew which way this one was going. That said, 4-0 really stuck the knife in. I honestly cannot see Watford, Burnley or, er, Norwich doing enough to get out of the dropzone - meaning Everton will survive by the old adage of just needing to find three teams more pants than they are. It’s not Frank’s fault though, remember. All Rafa. All Rafa. Of course Chelsea weren’t going to drive up to Teeside. The moment Kai Havertz suggested the players might have a bit of a whip-round and spare the loose change needed to charter a flight, there was more chance of Romelu Lukaku scoring than them arriving on four (or twelve, how many
wheels does a coach need and how many coaches were needed?) wheels. Hang on, Lukaku scored too so that doesn’t work either. Sporting integrity was hilariously ignored as Chelsea had 700 away fans who had bought their tickets before sanctions kicked in - and the game was as good as over before the Middlesboro fans had got through their sixth witty ditty about Roman and his club. Tommy T is managing this situation well, all jokes aside. So much so, Manchester United have noticed Tuchel’s ability to manage in a basket case scenario and think he would be a perfect fit for them at Old Trafford. Southampton had managed to draw twice against Man City in the Premier League this season - leading some pundits to suggest that United had moved for the wrong German Ralf, completely missing that Hassenhutl is (a) Austrian and (b) a Ralph. They were good for their draw after 45 minutes in the FA Cup before City realised they still fancied a crack at a treble and scored three in the second half. Cynics would say that Tottenham don’t need to waste money on a third goalscorer at the club to support Kaneson - own goals are free and plentiful at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Mind you, you’d have thought Kurt Zouma has scored enough of them on and off the field this season. You suspect some of West Ham’s pre-match planning might have been to do with Harry Kane coming short and Heung-min Son running in behind. Knowing what is coming is one thing - stopping it, another entirely. Spurs’ win could well have ended West Ham’s
wafer-thin hopes of actual Champions League football - you know, unless they go and win the Europa League which isn’t the craziest thing ever to have been suggested in this column. Back before football was invented by Sky in 1992, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool was quite a rivalry. When this clueless scribe started watching his first games, Forest were certainly there or thereabouts in the First Division (without ever really challenging for it which was more than Man United were doing) and often ended up at Wembley for a cup final. And that, I am told, was a bit of a comedown after the thrills of the late 70s and early 80s. So you can understand the noise and passion at the County Ground when the teams met for the first time in donkeys - donkeys being an apt choice of word for some of the players to have worn the Forest shirts in the post-Premier League wilderness years. Not currently, though - Steve Cooper, a manager getting more than enough press off the back of their cup run, has put together a decent enough side this season. Decent enough to nearly put King Klopp’s side in the exact position they didn’t want to be in - another 30 minutes at the end of a frenetic quarter final. You suspect Liverpool would have rather given up their quadruple hopes than go to extra time - and with ten minutes left Diogo Jota got the winner. Of course, it would have been completely different had Forest scored the chance they had two minutes earlier. The FA Cup can be both romantic and cruel, eh?
formula paste to take some quality carp. In second place from peg 36 was Barry Homer who did use a more subtle approach using maggots or pellet from peg 36 for 15kg. In third place returning from his
Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 15th of March we made to short trip over the border to fish the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. I was unable to make the trip following a positive covid test, a stark reminder that covid is still about. Only eight anglers turned up on what was predicted to be the windiest day of the year. Upon arrival the wind was not too bad but sand hung heavy in the air and made for some tough conditions. Winner on the day with a fantastic weight of 26.42kg was Graham Patterson. Drawn just before the first bridge he fished tight across on the method feeder with 8mm red robin
pellets to take a steady stream of carp. In second place with 22.74kg was Richard King. Drawn one peg downstream of Graham, Richard put his recent run of bad form behind him to take several carp on pellet or corn on the method feeder. In third place was the old stager himself, Terry Screen. Drawn on the end upstream peg, instead of dreaming of his birthday celebrations on the following day, he got his head down and caught carp on both maggot and pellet on the feeder for 13.120kg. Reports have been coming in of late that a large number of Zander had been turning up in the river. We had previously never seen any
evidence of this but a fine specimen of roughly 3.5kg, caught by Richard Smith on bread of all things confirmed this. Richard is pictured here with the Zander. Rods N Reels The following day we fished the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. Once again with high winds forecast it was decided to fish pegs 26 to 40. Terry Brindley took advantage of the favoured draw and was a runaway winner from peg 26 with 25kg. Terry thought about using fine lines, small hooks and tiny baits but quickly dismissed this as foolish and fished his usual dirty great lump of special
