Restaurant industry hit by inflation crisis

the hostelry industry on the costa Blanca is being forced into raising prices due to the increase in the cost

of key ingredients and transport. Many restaurants suffered the brunt of the impact of restrictions due to the

global pandemic and are now facing new challenges brought about by the Ukraine war. the spiralling prices of food and fuel, and the current transport strike and risk of interruptions to the supply chain, are having a major impact at a local level. reports indicate that many restaurants are being forced to raise menu prices by an average of 10% and even more worryingly, some establishments are beginning to suffer from lack of supply of some of the most basic products such as frying oil and milk. an industry insider revealed that many restaurants who would usually order a week’s worth of stock in advance are having pay out for a full month’s supply of stock to ensure they have a

continuous supply of ingredients. all of this comes as the industry gears up for easter bookings. reports indicate that reservations for easter are currently ‘uneven’ – in pre pandemic times, easter bookings would have been secured at this stage of the year. José María San Matías, general secretary of the elche hospitality association, and member of the provincial Federation of hospitality told the press this week, “the rise in prices is quite pressing and we are having a very bad time, but everyone is raising the cost of their products, it is evident. Most of us work with fairly small margins and we can’t withstand price increases, so you can see on the menus that people are raising prices in the hospitality

industry to be able to continue working without dying. there are also supply problems, lately the suppliers have not sent certain products, they have not arrived, and the situation is like this.” president of the hospitality association Mar Valera also warned that if the transport strikes bring about food shortages, many restaurants might be forced to close.

as WWF explains: “earth hour 2022 takes place at a particularly important time as an alliance of governments and organisations, including WWF, are calling for greater ambition and urgent action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. “Just a few weeks after ‘earth hour 2022’, world leaders will meet at cop15 of the United nations convention on Biological diversity to decide on a new global action plan for nature for the next decade. in 2022, the one health concept will take on special relevance, since after the pandemic it is increasingly clear that we can only live as healthy human beings on a planet that is also healthy.” coucillor aparicio has thanked the people of orihuela for participating on a personal capacity because ‘we must all get involved in the fight against climate change. the survival of the planet and of our species is something that we can only achieve with all of our involvement’. the theme of this year’s earth hour was ‘Shape our Future’ and people and organisations were encouraged to get involved by turning off the lights, to move in solidarity with nature, whether walking, running, swimming, on roller skates or by bicycle to virtually cover the 40,000 km that makes up the perimeter of the earth.

Help for Today Spangles in the community Hope for Tomorrow

at the fifth, and final, annual General Meeting held by the huntington’s disease association, president Marion Smith opened the meeting by thanking everyone from the community and local businesses for their generous support since the huntington’s disease association was established in april 2017. the president went on to say that she was “proud to report that during the period from april 2017 and January 2022 the association had raised a little over 22,000 euros. this had enabled the association to provide grants to the members for aids and equipment to improve their daily lives totalling just over €4,000. additionally, it had been possible to fund 50% of respite care for a carer caring for a loved one twentyfour hours a day, seven days a week, totalling €4,750. this had enabled the carer to have a much needed one night’s sleep a week until the member went into full time care in a care home. it was also possible to donate €3,600 to the huntington’s disease association (UK) towards vital research into this awful disease. none of this would have been possible without tremendous local support and the hard work of the association’s ambassadors, Volunteers and committee members.”

Marion Smith commented further she was confident that with the continued support of local people, the association would successfully move forward as the association of Movers and Shakers to offer friendship and support to people, and their families effected by ataxia, Motor neurone disease, Multiple Sclerosis and parkinson’s disease, as well as those effected by huntington’s disease. Smith also remarked that “these specific disease groups had been chosen because until now there was no local voluntary organisation extending friendship and support to them. For people whose lives are touched by a neurological disease, the effects can be devastating not just for the sufferer who needs support and help, but other family members who play a major part in caring for a loved one.” although early days, the new association had a range of fund-raising events planned: the ever popular Quiz night, an afternoon cream tea, a BBQ, a platinum Jubilee celebration for Queen elizabeth and towards the end of the year a christmas craft Fayre and a dinner dance. Spangles ladies harmony chorus has a strong work ethic and strives to be the very best they can be. Spangles has become a big part of the local community, spreading their love of a cappella singing wherever they can, as has been evident in the past weeks. Spangles has been visiting local schools. Some of the Spangles team visited King’s college in roldan to run a workshop for some of the music students. the whole Spangles chorus took part in an open day at the ieS ruiz de alda school in San Javier. Both events were a huge success and both schools are keen to form a cappella choirs as a result. Spangles will be supporting both projects. “We have always encouraged young people to take an interest in a cappella singing” said Musical director, Valerie lynch. “children are our future and it’s important to pass on our knowledge and love of singing to them”. last Sunday, Spangles took part in a show of solidarity for the Ukrainian people in the plaza de españa, San Javier, singing ‘dona nobis pacem’ with other choirs. “it was a very moving experience for everyone” said lyn Baines, chorus Manager. “our hearts are with the Ukrainian people at this awful time, and we want to do what we can to help them”. Spangles will be joining rondalla Son del Mar Menor and agrupación coral nuestra Señora de la asunción de los alcázares for a fundraising concert for Ukraine on 30 april at the

town hall in los alcázares. organised by the ayuntamiento de los alcázares, it will take place in the Salón de plenos at 7.00 pm and people will need to go to the town hall to get their invitation and ticket if they would like to attend. all funds will be going to the Ukrainian appeal. Spangles will be going to Valencia on 4 april to sing in the iglesia de San esteban, alongside two choruses from texas. they will travel to Valencia by train, wearing their new ‘walking out’ uniform, bought with generous sponsorship donations from paul’s places in the Sun, a1 Mortgages (UK) and the expat advice centre in los alcázares. “We’re so excited and can’t wait to sing with our friends from texas” says american Md, Valerie. Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four-part harmony. the team rehearse every thursday, from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at centro

Municipal las claras, calle helena, los narejos, los alcázares and visitors are always welcome. if you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining the group, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus. com or email info@spangleschorus.com

A child dies in a house fire in Almoradí

a five-year-old boy died tragically on thursday evening following a fire in an apartment in almoradi. the boy was with his grandparents when the blaze broke out, after starting in a kitchen cooker. the grandparents, believed to be aged between 60 and 65 years of age were also injured by the fire and suffered the affects of severe smoke inhalation. the emergency Service centre took the call at 8.50pm to report a fire in an apartment on the fourth floor of a building on calle Granados. the grandparents tried to put the

fire out and when it intensified the Grandmother and the child went outside onto the balcony. the Grandfather continued to fight the fire but was beaten back by the flames and had to leave the apartment. When the fire-fighters arrived they rescued the unconscious boy and his Grandmother from the balcony, according to the provincial Fire-fighters consortium. a crew from a SaMU ambulance that attended the scene performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other recovery techniques on the child, but there was no

response, and they could only confirm his death. the Grandparents were both in a serious condition and were treated for severe smoke inhalation. after stabilising them, they were transferred to the Vega Baja hospital. the fire was so strong it took the fire crews more than an hour to bring the blaze under control and a further tow hours to extinguish the blaze. one of the police officers also had to be treated at the scene, although it is not known if this was for burns or smoke inhalation.

Double tremors across the Vega Baja two earthquakes shook the Vega Baja awake yesterday morning, Monday 28th March. the national Geographic institute (iGn) recorded the first earthquake at 12:48am hours

with a magnitude of 2.2 and a depth of 6 kilometres. the second tremor was recorded just an hour or so later at 2am and this time it was of a smaller magnitude:

1.8. luckily, the low velocity left no structural damage, but emergency service received a few calls to report shaking and movement in some homes.

130 people enjoy the first fishing tourism event of the year councillor for tourism of torrevieja city council, rosario Martínez, reported that on Sunday, the first ‘pesca turismo’ torrevieja event took place to promote torrevieja’s oily fish, with a total participation of 130 adults and 24 children. the event, carried out by ociomar together with the torrevieja city council, began at 10am along the so-called Marinera route of the fishing port. attendees were able to learn about the seafaring origin of the city, the first fishing dock (Mínguez dock), the different fishing gear used and the boats where today’s fishermen work, bringing fresh fish from the sea every day. after the tour of the fishing dock, participants were given the opportunity to visit the fish market, where the guides adrian, Kate and Brad explained to all those present how the auction works. afterwards, a show cooking demonstration was carried out by Joaquín Guillamó, secretary of the association of hospitality companies of torrevieja,

who explained in detail how the anchovy is prepared in vinegar and salted. the recipes went down very well with the public, who participated in the demonstration with different questions, making the event very interactive and enjoyable. at the end there was a tasting

of fresh anchovies at the isla restaurant, located in the port area. in addition, the restaurant also gave attendees a paella tasting. throughout the day, the younger participants were able to enjoy a craft workshop given by Marcos Gastón de duendearte.

Classic Car Show to raise funds for Guardamar High School on the 9th of april the rotary club Guardamar del Segura and the Guardamar town hall are holding thei r 10th classic car Show. taking place at the plaza del ayuntamiento Guardamar from 10am, visitors are invited to look over 100 classic cars and motorbikes brought by members of american cars levante and performance Vip Murcia. there will also be live music from the group Saint & Sinner, performances from dreams dance academy and chari candela dance School and an enormous paella to enjoy. this event will be raising money to buy text books for ieS les dunes high school and support the youth of Guardamar del Segura to improve their performance at school. local businesses including Specsavers Ópticas, cárnicas ríos, repuestos almoradí, caja rural, inmobiliaria Montealone and Farmacia el Jardín (Urb. la Marina) are sponsoring the event, to ensure that it will raise as much money for this cause as possible. attendees at the event are also encourage to support the youth of Guardamar by purchasing food and drink and enjoying the paella. if you aren’t able to attend, but would still like to donate, you can make a donation via bank transfer. rotary Guardamar Segura’s Secretary and store director of lead sponsor Specsavers Ópticas

Guardamar Francisco Jurado commented, “We’re delighted to be organizing our 10th classic car event in Guardamar on the 9th of april to raise money for the book bank at ieS les dunes. We want to support as many children at the school as possible, and invite everyone in the area to come down and get involved. it will be a great day for car lovers and families alike! it is a pleasure to sponsor this event on behalf of Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar and we’d like to thank all the other sponsors for their support.” a representative of the parents’ and teachers’ association of ieS les dunes adds: “the Book Bank is a resource that allows students in Baccalaureate and training modules to have free textbooks by reusing those of other students from previous years. having a book bank is vital to lighten the economic burden on families, because the purchase of textbooks in these higher courses is usually quite expensive. it also gives us the opportunity to raise awareness among pupils about the

sustainable reuse of resources and the care of materials. the approximate number of students benefiting from this system is 220, although we want to extend it to the training modules, which would be about 100 more. this year’s objective for the book bank is to meet the challenge of replacing almost all the textbooks, due to the new education law. We estimate that the investment to cover the purchase of all the books will exceed €10,000. raising funds to finance the purchase of textbooks for our pupils is of vital importance. We are grateful for the great willingness that rotary has always shown to help and collaborate with our projects. the rotary club’s classic car event is a day of celebration for a great cause, a party that helps families and supports the young students of our high School. it is an event that not only allows us to raise funds but at the same time to collaborate and share a great day with an association which has given so much to our school.” Find out more about the event and rotary Guardamar by visiting www.rotaryguardamar.com

Pensions Black Hole there are two major causes of the black hole in final-salary pension schemes, experts agree. the first is relatively simple - people are living for longer. that makes pensions more expensive for companies because they are paying pensioners for longer. the second major problem is the uncertain economic outlook.

if you have a “final salary scheme” you can request a cash equivalent transfer value in order to secure your pension pot. Final salary pension transfer values are unlikely ever to be this high again, as they have been artificially boosted by the eagerness of scheme owners to offload their members. Moreover, you won’t have to worry anymore about the fund’s ability to pay your pension throughout your Many companies with final salary retirement. pensions have huge deficits – companies such as British telecom, which has a if you are daunted by the bureaucracy pension deficit of £6.3 billion. companies and would like help and advice as to can be vulnerable to these deficits and whether going down this route is right so can their pension schemes. they are for you, then help is on hand. our team of the legacy of expensive “final salary” advisers here at Seagate have a wealth of pensions that were once popular but knowledge and would be only too happy have now mostly been phased out. to assist you.

two russian women have been arrested in alicante for allegedly defrauding Ukrainian immigrants by offering help with temporary protection procedure. the pair, believed to be mother and daughter approached victims in queues at police stations and offered them faster processing of their documents in exchange for money, defrauding them of 5,000 euros. the national police reported that these women told the Ukrainian citizens that they worked for the police when they did not and, when discovered, threatened to cancel their refugee status. the victims were allegedly charged 250 euro per adult and 150 euro for a child for speeding up the procedures. the investigation began after

police discovered that Ukrainian citizens who were visiting the national police offices in alicante were being approached by two women who offered them help in exchange for money to speed up processing. the women addressed them in their own language. the alleged perpetrators took advantage of the ignorance of the refugees who had just arrived in the city and who went to the police station to obtain the documents required in order to allow them to reside legally in Spain. the arrested women had worked for several years as official interpreters and so they knew the procedures to be carried out. therefore, they were very believable and their knowledge added greater

Spain scraps self isolation for most Covid cases Spain’s public health commission has dropped the requirement to self-isolate for those who have a mild case of covid-19 or are asymptomatic. the change came into effect yesterday, Monday 28th March and replaces the previous directive which called for seven days of isolation for those who tested positive. Under the new guidelines people no longer have to stay at home unless they have severe symptoms. anyone who has been in contact with someone who is infected are also no longer required to go into quarantine. however, the Ministry still recommends that anyoe who does have mild symptoms should wear a mask both indoors and outdoors, limit social interaction and avoid coming into contact with people who may be vulnerable, for at least one week. Quarantine is still mandatory for those with more serious cases and categorised as being within the high-risk and vulnerable groups – such as the over 60s, the immune-suppressed and pregnant woman. From now testing will only be carried out on high-risk groups at health facilities and nursing homes with the focus on patients with the worst

conditions. these changes are part of Spanish health authorities’ strategy of focusing primarily on serious covid cases, as evidenced recently when they decided to stop counting each and every new covid-19 infection there is, and concentrate instead on monitoring high-risk groups and serious coronavirus cases. “the high levels of immunity reached among the Spanish population have determined a change in the epidemiology of the coronavirus, which explains this transition to a different strategy,” the public health

commission said. the health body hasn’t ruled out bringing back the sevenday isolation period for mild cases if the icU and hospital bed occupancy by covid patients reaches a high-risk level again. in early March, Spain also lifted the mandatory isolation of unvaccinated people who were close contacts of positive cases. after several weeks of falling coronavirus cases preceded by a rampant sixth wave which left five million infections, Spain’s fortnightly infection rate has now steadied at around 450 cases per 100,000 people.

Why Chorus Financial are different By Chris Shaw Partner & Financial Planner chorus Financial

Whether you are reading the local newspapers, browsing social media or google, or tuning into the local radio stations, there are certainly no shortage of Financial advisers, but how do you know which one to choose? as many of you will likely know, chorus are certainly not Spain’s longest established firm, in fact, far from it. chorus was set-up very deliberately as an alternative to those firms. We entered an industry that we felt had little care for client outcomes and was purely focussed on how much in fees, hidden or otherwise, could be extracted from Brits living in Spain. From our point of view, the very foundations of good quality advice – transparency and suitability – were about the last thing many of the established firms in Spain cared

about. chorus began life with a clear goal; to offer the best service, the highest quality financial solutions, and all of that had to be coupled with transparent, fair fees, that were fully justifiable. to do this, however, we really had to explain to the public how the industry works. regulation isn’t all that strict in Spain, and that can mean people are tied into products with high, often hidden fees, and in many cases, inappropriate or low-quality underlying investments. We felt our first job was to properly explain how fees and commissions work, how common products like Sipps, Qrops, Spanish compliant Bonds can be of benefit in some cases, and not in others. We have now been doing this for

many years, we’ve won major international awards for our efforts, and i believe that along the way we have educated many 100,000s of Brits in Spain. So why are chorus different? Well, myself and the chorus team have been lucky in that we have been able to keep full control of chorus and to always work to those initial goals we set. although we operate under a major european financial services network, aisa international, aisa also share our aims and goals and have always fully supported, and indeed encouraged, our transparent, client-focussed approach. Unlike many in the industry, our business model is focussed on developing long term relationships with our clients, rather than obtaining high

up-front commissions or fees. over the years this has allowed us to grow a large, happy, and loyal client base, giving us as a company incredible longterm security whilst allowing us to fulfil our client’s goals and desired outcomes. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the UK ‘mini’ Spring budget Statement this week had been eagerly anticipated by markets and consumers alike. the latter needed the chancellors help, and the former knew this a long, long time ago. the challenges facing the chancellor are wide-ranging. he needs to pay all that coVid-accumulated government debt back, against an extremely challenging backdrop, which is getting harder, given those rising interest rates. as we know, the Boe are being stirred into action by higher inflation, which is causing the consumer a cost-of-living crisis not seen since the days of farthings, shillings and flared trousers. that is all without even considering the potentially negative implications of a global economic slowdown, itself possibly fuelled by the ongoing war in Ukraine. tightrope walking indeed. in the end, the mini-Budget lived up to its name. rishi kept some spare change in his pocket, in case he needs it down the road. there were some treats to be had, such as petrol will be a (bit) cheaper, and some of us will benefit from a higher national insurance threshold. he also promised to cut income tax before the next election, which is in 2024. however, when you consider that the latest UK inflation saw cpi reach 6.2% (YoY), the Bank of england may have to raise those UK interest rates for a fourth time pretty soonish. that move would again substantially increase the government’s debt interest charges. So, whilst the Budget left us feeling short-changed, the cautious approach is perhaps prudent. however, the cries for more targeted plans to help those most in need will not be going away anytime soon. the pound didn’t really move around much on the Budget, and that is perhaps to be

expected. Sterling is far more interested in the broader market sentiment, and that was for the most part, in a positive mood this week. So, GBp/ USd remained steadfastly above the key 1.3000 psychological level. GBp/eUr ventured back above 1.2000, but has been unable to maintain that key region for any reasonable period of time. next week’s Gdp figures are the standout for me, but given their somewhat backwardlooking nature (it is all about Q4 2021), the pound may again react more to how the broader markets are faring on the day. EURO having been the centre of attention over the past month, the single currency settled back into a far more restrained range against the majority of its peers throughout this week. developments in Ukraine will always impact broad market sentiment, but they will especially impact the single currency. With frustratingly little ‘new’ news on that front, the tone was set. ecB chief, christine lagarde, dismissed risks of stagflation in her recent speech this week. Whilst highlighting the risks of rising inflation for the region, she also noted that the ecB’s monetary policies will not be in sync with Fed. however, markets have not ruled-out the chances of a possible ecB rate hike by the end of this year, and if those cries accelerate, expect the single currency to react. So, in the end, eUr/USd has gyrated around 1.1000, lacking clear impetus. next week might be a different story, with a plethora of euroarea data releases due, markets will have much more bait to go fishing with. the euro area hicp inflation print is one to watch in particular. inflation is expected to reach 6.3%, which will give the ecB plenty of food for thought ahead of their next meeting.

Eazylawns

eazylawns is the leading specialist in the trend for artificial grass that is taking the costas by storm. Forget 80s astro-turf and cheap-looking plastic turf, eazylawns provides high quality artificial lawns that are so realistic no-one can tell the difference from real grass. eazylawns was born of

necessity; a client was looking for a solution to the common problem in Spain – how to make a lawn green and keep it green. through the businesses extensive experience in garden maintenance, the team put together a program of watering, scarifying, fertilising, hollow-tining and cutting.

this method was extremely costly, time consuming and far from foolproof. then they considered artificial grass. eazylawns sourced several different types and were not impressed. Most of what they saw looked totally unrealistic and the level of service and expertise left more than a little to be desired. this inspired the team to develop its own product. eazylawns products are produced in the UK and the business covers the costa Blanca, although it has undertaken projects as far afield as Valencia and Marbella. the business offers a free full consultation and quotation service and works closely

with each customer on the design and installation process. once agreed, the installation is prompt and efficient, leaving the site clean and tidy. artificial grass is safe and has a low abrasion index, providing a soft landing if there should be an accident. it is realistic and can be adapted to all areas, surfaces, uses and budgets and it comes with an eight year manufacturers guarantee. put simply artificial lawns are practical, environmentally friendly, cost effective and convenient. added to that is the sheer quality and realistic look of this product, it really does have to be seen to be believed. So, whether it’s a tennis court, putting green, communal

This Week´s Movie Picks The Hitman´s Bodyguard

Wyatt Earp

With his reputation in tatters after the painfully unsuccessful delivery of a distinguished Japanese client, the former triple-a protection agent, Michael Bryce, is now reduced to a mere second-class bodyguard for hire, two years after the disgraceful incident. Under those circumstances, Bryce would do anything to prove his worth, and, before long, he accepts an offer from interpol to escort the international assassin, darius Kincaid, from Manchester to the hague. the task seems simple: Bryce needs to transport him from point a to point B; nevertheless, the trip to the netherlands is long and hazardous, and Kincaid--as the only one with the guts and enough hard evidence to testify against a tyrannical Belarusian dictator--is an obvious target. Undoubtedly, it’s a tough job, as the mismatched duo will have to put aside their grudges, and race against the clock in a non-stop concerto for bullets. can the hitman’s bodyguard carry through the most important mission in his career?

Kevin costner plays the most famous lawman ever to stride the Wild West. in a gritty, complex portrayal hailed as a “classic american performance” (Bob campbell, newhouse newspapers), academy award winner costner (dances with Wolves, the Bodyguard) plays the man who became a myth in acclaimed director lawrence Kasdan’s (the Big chill, Silverado) epic, action-filled saga. Gene hackman, an oscar winner for Unforgiven, as Wyatt’s iron-willed father, and dennis Quaid (the Big easy, the right Stuff ) as earp’s deadly best friend doc holliday add power to this mammoth, hard-hitting Western. From Wichita to dodge city to the o.K. corral in tombstone, arizona, Wyatt earp is a thrilling journey of romance, adventure and desperate, heroic action.

Chris Kamara health battle

chris Kamara has admitted it’s difficult to know what the future holds amid his health battle. the Sky Sports broadcaster – who has also confirmed ninja Warrior is returning after a threeyear break – revealed he has developed apraxia of Speech after fans were concerned by his appearance on Soccer Saturday recently, and now he’s given an update. appearing on itV’s Good Morning Britain, he said: “it’s difficult, because it’s a neurological problem we don’t know, the experts don’t know. the brain is such a complex part of you that it’s hard to say whether it is the thyroid that puts this on. “Will it get better in time? i’m trying to use parts of my brain now – i have got one, to be honest – i’m trying to use parts of my brain that allows me speak fluently. i’m with a speech therapist and another therapist who’s trying his best.” the 64-year-old star revealed he can still ‘sing-a-long all day long at the normal pace’ of a song, but he can sometimes struggle when he’s

speaking. noting he was having a ‘good day’ as he appeared on the breakfast show, he added: “it’s quite incredible really. Singing is not a problem, you can sing all day long at the normal pace of the song but talking, when the apraxia hits in, makes it really difficult. “i am not after sympathy, there’s so many people out there worse off than me, but i have come out and said it now. it’s there, and hopefully people will understand why i sound a little bit not like myself.” Kammy recently said he might need to cut down on his presenting duties and ‘take a back seat’ from live tV, but fans will be delighted to know he’ll be back on screen with Ben Shephard and rochelle humes for the return of ninja Warrior. “it’s incredible. i’m so excited. We thought it was finished, it wasn’t coming back, but have faith,’ he said. ‘after five years, we thought we would go forever, but then it stopped – but now we’re back!”

Sunday 3rd April – Channel 5, 2.45pm

Viewers say Lord Sugar made wrong decision it has taken weeks to whittle down the original 16 candidates but lord alan Sugar has finally found his next business partner on the apprentice. the businessman, along with the help of his advisors Baroness Karren Brady and tim campbell, watched as harpreet Kaur and Kathryn Burn created the businesses that they’d use their £250,000 winnings to invest in during the final of the BBc one reality show. the episode saw harpreet show off what her dessert business can offer while Kathryn wanted lord Sugar to see her unique matching pyjama business was worth his cash. it was all done with the help of a few familiar faces - the previously fired candidates. after choosing a new name for their businesses, creating a digital billboard and an advert, it was over to the two finalists to pitch their ideas in front of lord Sugar and a team of experts from across the dessert and food delivery world, and the retail sector. in the end, it was harpreet who becomes the show’s 17th winner – after two candidates were offered investment in series 14. he follows in the footsteps of the series 15 champion carina lepore, who also developed a business for those with a sweet tooth with her london-based bakery chain dough artisan Bakehouse. Speaking immediately after finding out she had won, harpreet said: “i

cannot believe lord Sugar has chosen me to be his business partner! i have dreamed of this moment, and it just completely proves that if you work hard and you believe in yourself, dreams do come true,” she said. But the apprentice viewers who have followed every moment of the series were quick to have their say with many telling lord Sugar he had made the ‘wrong decision’ due to a very specific detail.

@jenwrenarm said: “So what about the vanishing Sister?” “absolutely shocking that she won, its not just her business, what is she going to do kick her sister to the kerb,” @hfyfe123 wrote. @leanne_court tweeted: “So the big question is, what about harpreets sister? #theapprentice.”“how was it last week, harpreet being in 50/50 business with her sister was nearly the reason she went. now this week, it hasn’t been mentioned and now she’s hired!? Wrong decision in my eyes! #theapprentic e,”

@jodielliman commented. @mattleythegreat shared: “not sure that was the right decision. no real USp and not an adaptable proposition. also unsure of her character. and her sister?? #theapprentice.” West Yorkshire-based harpreet owns oh So Yum! – a dessert parlour and sweet treat delivery service – with her older sister Gurvinder. the company has two locations, in leeds and huddersfield. during the intensive interview segment of the show lord Sugar expressed concerns over the fact that she only owns 50 percent of the business, after she failed to declare that her sister owns the remaining half. “if you didn’t want her as a shareholder or director, fine, she’s prepared to step down,” harpreet told lord Sugar in the boardroom following her interview with his most trusted advisors. “But she’s a 50% owner isn’t she, at the moment?” lord Sugar asked, prompting harpreet to confirm: “She is, that’s correct.” however, it seems as though her sister is still involved in the winning business as its official social media page recently posted a video introducing her as a ‘co-founder’ who “works hard to make sure customers have the best experience when they visit our parlour as well as making sure that our fantastic team are always happy.”

Men Behaving Badly not ‘woke’ enough for remake Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey says he would love if the show was remade but fears his ‘misogynist idiot’ character wouldn’t fit in today’s world. The actor, 59, who played Tony Smart in the comedy alongside Martin Clunes (60) says the show isn’t ‘woke’ enough for 2022’s audiences. The show, which ran for 6 seasons in the 90s, also starred Caroline Quentin, 61, as Dorothy Bishop and Leslie Ash, 62, as Deborah Burton. Interviewed recently on the the Convex Conversation podcast: ‘It’s all about the script. If Simon [Nye] writes something marvellous, we’d obviously have a look at it. I don’t know if we could make it again now, though. It’s not woke enough is it? Putting ladies’ underpants on my head… things like that. I guess Leslie was objectified a bit by my character. But that was the point of it – that we were really rubbish, and they were really cool and smart. ‘We were a couple of misogynist

idiots who couldn’t keep a job, let alone a girlfriend. ‘I don’t know if it would work [now], but it would be fun trying. The way to do it would be to have the wokeness involved, in that Tony is so PC it’s unbelievable. ‘They would just have to have lapses after several beers on the sofa.’ Neil added that he and Martin often discuss appearing in the show again but insists the pair would demand huge fees. He claims they have joked it would be a ‘retirement gig’ for them.

Enjoy hearing again

Most people are burdened with misconceptions about their hearing and about what Hearing Aids can do to help.

At Apple Hearing & Healthcare we try to help you separate the myths from the facts. MYTH: When someone is hearing impaired, that just means that sounds aren’t loud enough. FACT: That’s just part of it. Perhaps the person may have trouble hearing in crowds or group conversations. Perhaps they hear but don’t always understand what’s being said. Words may seem to be mumbled or words just run together. These are but a few symptoms. MYTH: Hearing Aids amplify all

sounds, including background noise.

FACT: With the advent of digital technology, Hearing Aids can narrow the sound reception area, reducing interfering background noise and conversations from the sides and rear. MYTH: Wearing a Hearing Aid is a sign of getting old. FACT: Although hearing impairment is common in older adults, many middle-aged and younger people are affected too. Remember: a hearing loss is more noticeable than a hearing aid. MYTH: I’ve heard that my type of hearing loss can’t be helped. FACT: In most cases, nerve deafness can be helped through amplification.

Now there’s hope for those who have been told they couldn’t be helped Hopefully our myths and facts have given you a little better understanding of hearing and hearing aids. Expand your culinary boundaries There’s a whole host of ingredients out there that many may dismiss as waste, weeds or just plain wacky. But with a little know-how, these unexpected items can be turned into delicious dishes.

Watermelon rinds You may not have considered eating watermelon skin before but it’s actually very versatile. Grated rinds can be used as an alternative to cabbage in coleslaw or added to salsa. Pickled rinds are also popular in South Africa where they’re used to make a sweet jelly that’s sometimes served with cheese. Beetroot stems Leafy beetroot stems are a great substitute or alternative to spinach, bok choy and Swiss chard. Like you would with other fresh greens, simply steam, braise or sauté with a little butter. You could even eat them raw, simply thrown into salads. Banana skin It might sound bananas but there are plenty of ways you can cook with these fruit peels and it’s a fairly common ingredient in many parts of the world. Full of fibre, vitamins and minerals, it just needs to be broken down in a food processor or by cooking.

Try banana peel chutney, spiced with chillies and garlic, or banana peel thoran, a coconutbased curry. Cauliflower and broccoli leaves There’s no need to throw away cauliflower or broccoli leaves. Make the most of the entire vegetable by roasting them in olive oil and a few pinches of salt to create kale-like crisps. Like other greens, they can also be sautéed or boiled. Lavender Instantly recognisable, lavender is a floral herb with a heavy scent and strong flavour. It can be added to cakes, breads, jellies and slow-roasted meat dishes for fragrance. But ensure you use it sparingly as it can be overpowering. As always, only eat lavender that is marked as

edible or that you have grown. Sweetcorn silks There’s more to sweetcorn than the kernels. Next time you buy a cob, don’t be in a rush to throw away the silks – that’s the fluffy tassels attached to the top. These can be used to make tea which is said to have various health benefits including antiinflammatory properties. Simply allow to dry out then steep in hot water. Avocado stones It’s an acquired taste but you can actually eat the stone inside an avocado. The best way to make this very hard seed edible is to dehydrate it in the oven. Next peel off the skin and discard, then slice and grind the seed into a powder. It’s very bitter so best added to smoothies.

Martin asks“Are there any particular scams to be aware of?” I was informed by a police officer about these scams. 1) Someone messages you on

WhatsApp saying they are stuck and have lost their luggage. They are using a different phone number to the one you are familiar with. They explain that they have lost their phone when traveling. You may reply saying is that “Mary or Paul for example”. They immediately come back and say yes. From now on you think it’s the person that you know. They say that their luggage is on its way home. They give you a tracking number so that you can track it. The “company” then send you a message asking for this tracking number. They then ask for money to receive this luggage.

3) You receive a text or email from what appears to be a bank. If it’s not your bank then you would ignore it but it may be “ your” bank. There is a link that gives the web address of your bank, so you click on the link. This link is not your bank. They then ask you to give you login details. The link takes you to another website set up by the scammer. They will then have you details to allow them to withdraw funds from your account. Never try to log into your bank via a link in an email or text.

2) Another one is where you receive a message saying “hello I am in trouble” but it’s from an unknown phone number. You guess that it’s from your son or daughter. They reply and say yes. You reply and say why the strange phone number. They reply to say they have lost their phone. You ask how you can help them. They do no they will be alright. You then insist on trying to help. They may

4) You receive a text saying that your bank card has been blocked. They ask you to click on a link to unlock your account. You enter your details so that now the scammer has access to your account. Your money will then be taken and transferred to an account that will be difficult to trace. Brian Hoile Technology Help Group

then give you a bank account which they say is someone they have met who is willing to help them get money this way.

Food bank users refusing root veg because they ‘can’t afford to boil them’ Richard Walker, MD of Iceland supermarkets said that food bank users in the UK are saying no to many root vegetables “because they can’t afford to boil them.” Walker made the observation during an interview with BBC Radio 4, saying that hungry families are leaving vegetables behind at food banks because they can’t afford the energy cost of cooking them. The Iceland boss added that the cost-ofliving crisis is the “single most important domestic issue that we’re facing as a country, and it is incredibly concerning”. The supermarket boss has previously spoken out about this issue, stating that Iceland is committed to maintaining its £1 line until the end of the year to help customers. This week, Walker told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that his stores were “in the poorest communities around the UK, so our customers are depending on us for that value…but the pressure is relentless and it’s coming at us from all angles at the moment”. Walker’s remarks came following news that the rate of inflation has risen to its highest level in 30 years. Annual inflation rose to 5.4 percent in

December; the highest since March 1992 (7.1 percent). With fuel, electricity and food costs all on the up, consumers are struggling to get by; and to make matters worse, many basic food items are increasing in price, meaning some have had to turn to food banks or sacrifice necessities such as heating their homes. Meanwhile, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) announced that the rate of Consumer Price Index inflation jumped to 6.2 percent in February, from 5.5 percent in January. According to reports by Sky News, The Bank of England has issued a warning that inflation could reach as high as eight percent over the next month, driven by the 54 percent rise

in the energy cap that is set to come into force on 1 April – something that will affect 22 million UK households. The cap is set to soar by almost £700 on average in response to rising wholesale prices, which have since been pushed even higher due to the invasion of Ukraine and resulting sanctions imposed on Russia. Walker added that costs were rising across the entire supply chain from oil – which affects the price of all food products – to worker shortages, higher transportation costs, and rising energy costs. He also raised concerns about shortages in the supply of fertiliser from Russia, sunflower oil from Ukraine, and a £20 million increase in staff pay costs this year as the national minimum wage was raised.

Daily drink to combat blood pressure and cholesterol Around 42.6 percent of adults in Spain have high blood pressure, according to a recent study. If you have high blood pressure, reducing it even a small amount can help lower your risk of a number of serious health conditions. One of the easiest ways to manage your high blood pressure is by sipping a glass of unsalted tomato juice every day. Studies suggest that tomato juice can not only lower blood pressure but also help to manage cholesterol level and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. According to one study published in Food Science and Nutrition, tomato juice may significantly lower blood pressure if consumed on a regular basis. To establish this effect, researchers from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and Tucson Plant Breeding Institute, studied the effect of unsalted tomato juice on a sample of 481 participants. Participants who regularly drank tomato juice saw drastic improvements in their blood pressure after 12 months. The researchers of the study saw improvements in both systolic and diastolic pressure, as well as LDL or “bad” cholesterol. The reason why the juice is so potent is its potassium content. Potassium is a mineral that has multiple essential functions in

your body. Eating or drinking foods and drinks packed with this mineral can help cut your high blood pressure. The mineral plays a role in how much fluid is kept in your body as well as how much is released. If your body is holding onto water, this will result in more fluid being in your blood. This then puts more pressure against your artery walls, which boosts your blood pressure. To remove excess fluid from your body, you need a “fine balance” of sodium and potassium, the blood

pressure. For many, losing weight is all they need to do to get their blood pressure down to a normal level. Moreover, when it comes to dietary choices, cutting down on salt and alcohol is strongly advised. Eating more healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables will positively impact your blood pressure reading. Foods such as bananas, oranges, melon, grapefruit, cooked spinach, sweet potatoes and mushrooms are also high in potassium.

The importance of optometrists in protecting sight and ensuring eyes are healthy Optometrists offer eye exams and prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses. They are qualified professionals who take care of their patients’ eyes and monitor and manage eye conditions related to diseases like diabetes, and common conditions such as glaucoma. Eye tests are not simply performed to see whether or not we need glasses, but also to check the health of the eye and our eyes can also give us indications of wider health concerns. This is why the skills and experience of optometrists are so vital to protect sight and identify early signs of health conditions. For World Optometry Day which fell on March 23rd, Specsavers Ópticas celebrated their optometrists and wanted to showcase their skills, as well as share information about the symptoms we can spot and the health conditions that can be picked up during an eye test. Nino Lamm is an Optometrist at Specsavers Ópticas and is originally from The Netherlands. He studied to be an optometrist at Valencia University, going on to secure a Masters in Optometry and has been working in the optical field since 2019. He speaks Dutch, English, Spanish and Valencian and is happy to be able to help customers in their own language. Nino comments, “Optometry is a great profession because we can help

people in so many ways, I really enjoy being able to spot and explain health issues and deal with refraction needs. I’m proud of the complete eye test we are able to give and the time we have to advise customers.” Nino adds, “I’m delighted that World Optometry Day is shining a light on this undervalued profession. On this important day I’d like to advise people to ensure they have a complete eye test every two years, even if you don’t feel like you have any issues, and more frequently if you have conditions or family history which require it. Many of the most routine causes of blindness can be avoided with routine tests. Don’t be afraid to ask us for help, or clarification if you have any doubts or worries about your eyes, that’s what Optometrists are here for!” Here are some of the issues which can be spotted during a routine eye test. Glaucoma ‘Glaucoma is often symptomless as it develops so gradually. That’s why it is often referred to as the silent thief of sight,’ says Nino. ‘It is one of the leading causes of blindness, however, if it is identified in its early stages, it can be successfully managed. Regular eye examinations are key to detecting it – and are so important to those at greater risk of the condition due to their older age or family history.’

Diabetic retinopathy ‘In its early stages diabetic retinopathy usually doesn’t pose any noticeable symptoms, so an eye test can pick it up before you do,’ Nino says. ‘As the condition affects small blood vessels in the eye, damaging the retina, your optometrist can look for early characteristic changes, such as tiny leaks from these damaged vessels.’ High blood pressure ‘During an eye test, your optometrist might spot signs of high blood pressure, through observing the eye’s blood vessels to see if they have narrowed or started leaking. Patients with high blood pressure can develop a condition called hypertensive retinopathy which sees the walls of blood vessels thicken, narrow and restrict blood flow. In some cases the retina also becomes swollen and the blood vessels can leak.’ Potential retinal detachment ‘Floaters appear as black or translucent spots or strands, which give the impression of seeing something ‘float’ across your field of vision,’ says Nino. ‘Most are very small and move out of your vision very quickly, and it’s likely that you will see more floaters in your vision as you get older, and if you are short-sighted. ‘In rare occasions, new floaters can sometimes be an indication of retinal

detachment, a potentially serious condition. I lost my mother to cancer at the end of last Summer. She was only 64. It doesn’t seem right a person my age should lose their mum. I have struggled with the loss. My partner has been wonderful, and I know she is sad too, as she loved my mum. To make matters worse there have been problems with my older brother, and Aunt (mum’s sister). I wanted to share mum’s ashes, but they did not want that, nor did they invite us to be present at the scattering of the ashes. My step-father, whom I’ve regarded as my second Dad, is as shattered as I am at losing mum, but he is allowing himself to be

manipulated by my mum’s sister, and bullied by my brother. I have received constant, nasty text messages from my brother; my sister has also received the same from them. I want them out of my life. This is an awful situation for you. Not only are you grieving, you are having to fight off unpleasant relatives. You tell me you only want a keepsake of your mum’s, which is not unreasonable. However, your older brother and Aunt seem to be in charge of things, and they are getting pleasure in refusing you and keeping this feud going. Try and remember your mum in a

different way if you can’t have any of her possessions. Frame a photo of her, and visit places that meant a lot to you and she. Keep happy memories alive in your head. The grief will get better in time; your mum would not want you to suffer, but you will suffer if you keep these nasty people in your life. If this were me, I would block them from all contact and not participate on social media. If they turn up at your house, or try to contact you in a different way, ignore them, discard letters and don’t read them. There is no need for you to have anything more to do with these wretched people whose only pleasure is to intend you harm. .

ITV Prevents Death and Injury No less than 133 deaths and 12,100 injuries in traffic accidents are avoided each year thanks to the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (ITV) in a total of 17,700 accidents that did not occur, according to a study by the Carlos III University of Madrid. This analysis also attributes a saving of 329 million euro to society. But not everything is good news, since we must include the so-called “silent victims” that is, those due to air pollution that have been estimated at 406 more, in addition to another 485 million saved. With all this, the figures amount to 539 total deaths avoided and cost containment that rises to 814 million euro in total per year. These figures are going to serve as the basis for the first awareness campaign that the ITVs are going to carry out. Its intention is clear, to stop being perceived as a formality and to become one as an act of responsibility towards oneself and towards the rest of society. That is to say, “vaccinate ourselves” according to Guillermo Magaz, general director of AECA-ITV, who categorically affirms that “it is a fact that ITV saves lives” and for this reason this campaign aims to “generate impact, knowledge of the social function of our work, inform about the benefits that we bring to all drivers and move those who pass the inspection to do so, motivated by the importance of it”. Magaz also affirms that the fact that the technical inspection allows to control the emissions of polluting gases from the vehicles so that they comply with the maximum levels allowed by current regulations and pollution is reduced. The association, which brings together more than 400 inspection stations, is going to carry out this campaign at a national level before Easter, with the

slogan “If it doesn’t pass, pass it on”. It will last about six weeks and is aimed at citizens because “although there are factors that generate accidents such as the state of the road and the behaviour of the driver, the state of the vehicles is another one of them. And in it, technical inspections play a key role, since a vehicle that circulates on the roads without complying with the minimum safety standards poses a risk to all road users”, according to Alejandro Pastor, president of AECA-ITV. According to AECA-ITV in 2020 and compared to data from 2019, vehicles over ten years old involved in road accidents with fatalities and without the past ITV grew by 88% in passenger cars, 109% in light industrial vehicles of up to 3,500 kilos and up to 176% more in industrials of more than that tonnage.

That is why Magaz sees it as “an act of individual care and for other people, just as we have done with vaccines in the pandemic, for example”, although it does not leave aside the “necessary control of emissions” as well as the forecast that, for example, insurance companies hide behind this fault so as not to cover the economic consequences of these possible accidents. Both executives are aware that “we have one of the oldest fleets in Europe and with bleak prospects in the short term” and therefore point out that with it we not only protect ourselves, but also protect those who accompany us in the car and those who cross our path. According to Magaz and Pastor “there are things that can be passed over, but the ITV is not one of them and that is what has been tried to reflect in this initiative.”

Letting Emergency Vehicles Pass

It´s never something any of us want to encounter during a drive, but occasionally we will come across emergency vehicles who need to pass us. All too often this surprises drivers, sometimes cars barely move, they don’t make room and prevent the emergency vehicle from progressing. These are common situations for drivers of the emergency services who complain about the lack of knowledge of the general public. By virtue of article 69 of the General Traffic Regulations, cars must facilitate the passage of ambulances, firefighters or police cars; Otherwise, they will commit a serious offense punishable by a fine of 200 euro. To make their work easier and to save lives, a central corridor must be opened on the road, the so-called “emergency corridor”. Cars traveling in the right-hand lanes must pull over to the right-hand shoulder. Those who do it on the left, move to the left. In the event of there being three or more lanes of traffic, the emergency vehicle will try to cut a path between lanes one and two, so those on the right must move over to the right, and those in lane one, move to the left. It is also worth noting that Guardia

Civil traffic and police vehicles may have blue lights illuminated all the time. This is part of their high-profile policing

procedures. It is only when the blue lights are flashing that they are responding to an emergency.

The last England striker to place the ball on the penalty spot at Wembley knowing he was about to draw level with the great Sir Bobby Charlton was Gary Lineker against Brazil, way back when. He was a mere 18-yards from scoring his 49th goal in an England shirt and Lineker, well he didn’t miss penalties did he? Well, sometimes he did - and Lineker’s effort against the South American giants is firmly filed under ‘Panenkas gone wrong’ as he completely fluffed his lines. Lineker never scored for England again and saw his career end being subbed off for Alan Smith of Arsenal at Euro 92, with Graham Taylor’s side desperately needing a goal. Fast forward a few decades and another Tottenham striker found himself in the same position. Armband on, meaningless friendly underway, club side going nowhere. All Kane needed was an impending transfer to Japan and a pundit gig on Match of the Day lined up and it could have been 1992 all over again. Like Lineker, Kane doesn’t miss penalties and he dispatched this one in the way many of us wished Lineker had done all those years before.

the pitch for about three seconds as Tyrick Mitchell came on just as Conor Gallagher was departing for someone else? Has that ever happened before? Can anyone be bothered to find out? Alright, alright - there was maybe some value in seeing Gallagher look very bright in an England shirt and that might just get him a place on the plane to Qatar. Kyle Walker-Peters did nothing wrong and could find himself being the modern-day Gary Stevens to Gary Stevens in Mexico 86. Except he won’t as that would mean Trent, Trippier, Reece James etc have all not made the trip and Kyle Walker is the first-choice right-back. Jordan Pickford took the opportunity to make sure that number one spot remains his to lose in Aaron Ramsey’s absence whilst England’s back three did nothing to suggest Southgate shouldn’t be going four at the back in the World Cup. At the end of the day, none of it came close to Gareth Bale’s double taking Wales to just 90 minutes short of their first World Cup since 1958. A parasite in the eyes of Marca he maybe, but not many parasites can rock up and curl a free-kick like that top bins. Thanks for the four Champions Leagues, Gareth. It’s almost as if they don’t like him in Spain. Scotland would have beaten Poland had it not been for a very friendly penalty being given and Ireland drew 2-2 with Belgium which is probably quite impressive.

Is that enough about trying to make Saturday’s match have some kind of relevance in the football world?

Two of the bigger foot races took significant paces forward in the week. Ajax’s Erik ten Hag must have interviewed better than he did at Tottenham as he is now believed to be the front-runner for the Manchester United gig. Ten Hag is said to be surprised a contract hasn’t been offered already seeing that he is (a) keen and (b) available for nothing despite having a contract elsewhere.

Jeez, you need more? OK, how about Crystal Palace having three players on

And at Stamford Bridge, four bidders remain in the running to take over

It was a night of records - the 2-1 win over Switzerland was England’s 300th on home soil. It was Kane’s 100th scored penalty of his career. It moved him to joint-second in the all-time list, just four behind Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea. Whether John Terry and some cartoon apes are actually going to be involved remains to be seen. Given the lack of proper football to mock, it’s over to the transfer rumours to see us home this week. Arsenal want Marcus Rashford who is looking increasingly like he could be the next Danny Welbeck - leaving United in hope of a better life at the Emirates, only to end up at Watford and Brighton further down the line. Arteta is also circling around Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a player Frank Lampard is said to be ready to cash in on. Either that, or DLC has made it very clear he doesn’t fancy a stint in the Championship. Staying with the Gunners, they are prepared to battle it out with United for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans who is a player I am completely 50/50 on whether he will improve by going bigger than Leicester or end up on the scrap heap having left a tidy little gig at the King Power.

said they won’t put the club in financial danger by trying to sign the striker presumably because they are already in financial danger and still hoping to sign Mo Salah. Oh, and Robert Lewandowski. Burnley wanted to get Victor Moses out of Russia, but the Premier League said no - which answers the obvious question of ‘whatever happened to Victor Moses?’ Fulham are already preparing for a Premier League relegation battle next season, so want to sign Burnley’s Nick Pope. PSG would like to sign Leeds’ bright light Raphinha - which is a shame as Raphinha had such a promising career ahead of him. They’re also in for Wolves’ Pedro Neto - please refer to my previous comment. They would still like to sign Paul Pogba as well, which feels like a much better fit.

Harry Winks might have got himself a nickname of Antonio Conte, but the Italian is prepared to let Winksy go in the summer - alerting Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Newcastle didn’t spend as much as they would have liked in January so are ready to go again - they’re hoping Eddie Howe has done enough to show Sven Botman that they are a proper football team now and also fancy Darwin Nunez from Benfica.

Erling Haaland has turned down Man City’s first mega-bucks offer - this one will run and run. Barcelona have

apart from doubling up as a recovery truck to pull Bill out of the mud had 11kg from peg 1. Bill Reade was third from peg 7 with 10kg. Next week we will be fishing the spring festival at this complex and

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 22nd of March we foolishly fished the 2nd round of the Spring series at the El Bosquet complex. After several days of really bad wet weather, we feared that this event may be cancelled but 19 hardy souls turned up. It was raining and windy upon arrival and this continued for most of the match. The roads and pegs were quite accessible and shows what good work the complex has done on the roads lately. The match was won by Tery Screen with 16.16kg of mainly carp caught on the pole. Drawn on the favoured peg 1 he struggled for several hours in the

match until he snared a few down the edge on maggot. This was a popular win, as Terry has been a stalwart of this club and it was great to see him return to the winner’s circle. In second place was yours truly Ian Brown. I took advantage of a very good draw on peg 26. The wind was so strong that it was almost impossible to fish the pole so I spent most of the time on the method feeder. I fished micros on the feeder and a 6mm pellet on the hook to catch all carp for 13.18kg In third place was the other local legend, Bill Reade. Drawn on peg 6 he fished the pole with maggot for 12.46kg. Other section winners were Richard

Smith with 4.02kg, Steve Higgins with 10.52kg and John Waples with 9.28kg. The pairs event was won by Bill and Steve Higgins with 22.98kg. Rods N Reels The following day the weather was pretty much the same except it rained continuously for virtually the entire match. Only a handful of true die Hards turned up and once again the match was at El Bosquet. Winner on the day making a welcome return to these shores was the Welsh Wizard, Dougie Hornblow, he fished the pole with maggot on peg 3 for 15kg. In second place was Alan Priest who

pegs A1 to 7, 18 to 25 and 26 to 40 are all booked with 25 anglers taking part. Pleasure anglers can use pegs 8 to 16. Further info can be found on our website www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown
