Half a million euro per year to clear wipes from local sewerage network

torrevieja city council and water management company agamed have launched a new awareness campaign about the proper disposal of wet wipes and other waste after it emerged that the town spends as much as half a million euro per year on the issue.

the town hall revealed this week that flushing ‘wet wipes’ down the toilet has a knock on effect of a 15% increase in the cost of maintaining sewerage and sanitation networks and infrastructures, which represents an additional cost of around €500,000 per year.

the councillor responsible for the integral Water Cycle of the torrevieja City Council, antonio Vidal, together with the deputy manager of agamed, Gemma Cruz, and the head of sewerage management, dina González, presented the new awareness campaign called “the monster of the wipes”, about the importance of correct practices and the proper use of bathroom wipes and other solid waste such as masks, gloves, cotton swabs, cigarette butts, etc. that can wreak havoc on the operation of wastewater treatment plants. every year, tons of solid waste end up in sewage networks and in treatment plants. part of this waste that citizens throw down the toilet is not biodegradable and generates obstructions. this problem has been made worse in recent years by the massive presence of masks and gloves. in the last year alone, the treatment plant that collects wastewater from

torrevieja collected a total of 256 tons of waste, much of which corresponds to these non biodegradable items. as a direct result of these obstructions, agamed had to deal with around 260 incidents in the pumping and in the sewerage network during the last year alone – that’s almost one incident every day and a half. the campaign aims to use media and social networks to highlight the issue. in the case of wipes, for children’s use, make-up removers or for hygiene and body care, the problem is the presence of skeins of textile fibres and plastics, which, together with many other residues flushed down the toilet, clog the sewers. although many of these products claim that they are biodegradable, they are not really easily disintegrated, since the time they take to degrade is considerably long. the facilities most damaged by wipes are the sewage pumping stations,

See page 12

which require constant cleaning, with the consequent nuisance of odours and noise that this causes to the residents of the area where the pumps are located. also damaged are the gratings and sieves of the treatment plants, which collapse and break due to the accumulation of wipes. in addition to wipes, the population throws other products down the toilet that cause serious problems in the purification processes and affect the environment, such as paints, oils, detergents, soaps, medicines and pesticides.

Campaigners continue to protest against Cala Mosca development local environmental campaigners gathered to demonstrate against the construction of more than 2,000 homes in Cala Mosca. More than a hundred people turned out tp the rally to demand that the City Council protect the last untouched stretch of coastline and plead for more services for orihuela Costa. protesters gathered on the esplanade of playa Flamenca to say “no to the destruction of the natural environment of Cala Mosca.” the rally was organised by the Salvemos Cala Mosca (Save Cala Mosca) association, which defines itself as a neighborhood and social movement without a political affiliation, which called for a halt to “coastal speculation, because we are already saturated.” Banging drums, sounding whistles and hoisting banners, the attendees wanted to highlight the “failure of the City Council to offer more services” in orihuela Costa, an area that they claim has a huge infrastructure problem despite the fact that there are more and more residents throughout the year: “More people means fewer resources and more traffic jams,” said a spokesperson for Save Cala Mosca. the Ministry of transport has taken the issue to the high Court of Justice of the Valencian Community after a plenary agreement in September modified the partial plan not taking into account a mandatory report that warned of the repercussions that developing Cala Mosca would have on the n-332. the developer emphasizes that

“the execution of the works may be resumed 15 years after their start,” at the same time claims that “the project has been modified to comply with all the legal measures required by public administrations and guarantee the preservation of the environment, as well as the protection of the endemic species of Cala Mosca.” Meanwhile, environmentalists and local residents have appealed for the

suspension of works. they have also presented allegations to the Vega Baja territorial action plan, the Consell’s supra-municipal project to control the urban growth of the region, so that it declassifies this land in order that it becomes green infrastructure. Two hikers die in accident two members of a group of hikers died on Friday afternoon when they fell into a ravine and ended up being dragged by the waters of the algar river between Bolulla and Callosa d’en Sarrià in alicante. Sources from the alicante provincial Firefighters Consortium said that one of the victims was the group’s guide, aged 43, and the other was a woman whose age has not been revealed. paramedics attended to both of them, although in the end they could not be saved. the incident happened on Friday afternoon when for unknown reasons, both of the victims suffered an accident and fell into a ravine while hiking in the area which is a very popular spot for hikers near the well known algar waterfalls. Both were dragged by the river and ended up several meters below the ravine, said emergency services. a rescue helicopter and several crews from the Benidorm fire station, as well as SaMU members, added from the Generalitat’s emergency service

(CiCU). paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man, who was lying unconscious when they found him, but it was too late to save his life. the other injured hiker was found in similar circumstances, although still alive and with breathing difficulties. the firefighters’ airborne medical team performed the same recovery manoeuvre on her, but she could not be saved. emergency services sources indicated that the rest of the hikers in the group were fine, since they had not fallen. at the very same point, the estret de les penyes ravine, two canyoning experts suffered an accident last Sunday while rappelling. according to sources, one of them fell into a pool where he was submerged and hooked to his partner by the rope, so he could not go up or down. the other hiker cut the rope that linked them and alerted the rescue services, who located the victim a few meters down the riverbed, unharmed.

Guardia Civil in Bétera, Valencia, have seized the largest find of protected stuffed animals in Spain, and one of the largest ever found in europe, it was revealed this week. officers have opened an investigation into one individual for crimes related to smuggling and are investigating another individual for flouting animal protection laws. the operation, which was carried out by the nature protection team of the Valencia Guardia Civil began as far back as november 2021, when investigators became aware of a possible private collection of specimens in the municipality of Bétera, which is about two hours north of alicante. during the course of the investigation, officers located a warehouse of more than 50,000 square meters, which contained a house and two storage units. the warehouse contained 1090 stuffed specimens inside.

of these specimens, 405 are listed by CiteS (Convention on international trade in endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) while some of them even extinct like the oryx dammah or practically extinct like the addax or the Bengal tiger. in addition, other animals with various levels of protection were found, such as the cheetah, leopard, lion, lynx, polar bear, snow leopard, white rhinoceros, etc. also, among the pieces found, 198 were large ivory tusks

of elephants. officers estimate that the specemins found would have an approximate value of more than 29 million euro. in the next phase of the operation, officers will proceed to analyze all the documentation provided by the owner to justify the possession of the pieces. Various Guardia Civil departments collaborated with eUropol during the operation, the findings of which will be presented in court.

Brits outnumber Spaniards Political turmoil in Orihuela on holiday in Benidorm British tourists in Benidorm have outnumbered Spanish visitors for the first time since before the pandemic – and it’s still only early spring. hotel and hospitality trade association for the Costa Blanca, hosbec, says the number of UK nationals travelling to the alicante-province holiday capital from their home country is the highest since before March 2020 when Covid-19 contagion forced the whole of Spain into lockdown. this bodes well for easter and, even more so, for summer, the association believes. “in reality, all destinations across Spain have seen tourist numbers at their maximum since March 2020,” hosbec explains. practically all hotels in the Valencia province and those along the alicante-province coastline, known as the Costa Blanca, are now operating, and about nine in 10 of those in the Benidorm area itself and in the province of Castellón. “at the moment, the war in Ukraine is not having a negative effect on hotel bookings,” hosbec assures. “in terms of international holidaymakers, Spain is seen as a safe european destination where there are no restrictions or problems in tourists entering. “the conflict is, however, causing tourists to postpone holidays outside the country,

and many are seeking new destinations closer to home for their forthcoming breaks. “notwithstanding any last-minute changes, we are confident of a buoyant easter for tourism, which could be a near-perfect one if it comes accompanied by dry, sunny weather and temperatures normally associated with midapril and spring.” the past few weeks along Spain’s east coast have been very wet, with constant downpours, but temperatures have started to rise significantly and april has so far been largely dry. the last week in March was when foreign holidaymakers in Benidorm and surrounding coastal areas outstripped ‘staycation’ tourists – accounting for 55.6 percent, and in the majority from the UK, which continues to be a market leader in the area.

of these 55.6 percent, Brits accounted for 44.6 percent, a long way ahead of the second- and third-most prolific output countries, Belgium (2.7 percent) and the netherlands (2.5 percent). this translates as British visitors making up 24.8 percent of the total, or nearly one in four visitors to Benidorm in March. Most of the remaining 45 percent were Spanish State pensioners on iMSerSo trips, the subsidised staycation tours organised in autumn, winter and spring for the over-65s. For the remainder of the Costa Blanca, Spanish tourists accounted for 51.3 percent in March and foreigners for 48.7 percent - a figure which is expected to level up as the weather gets warmer and which could see the latter overtake the former for the first time since summer 2019.

last week the opposition parties signed a motion of censure before a notary, requiring that a vote be taken at the next plenary meeting, on 25th april, to remove the city’s Mayor, emilio Bascuñana, and his partido popular team, from office. this was followed by the announcement from pSoe and Ciudadanos that they had made a political pact to form a new government, the with pSoe leader Carolina Gracia appointed as the new Mayor. it also claimed that councillors from Cambiemos/podemos were also supporting the motion. if the motion goes ahead, the new government would begin its journey as a minority government. the socialist group currently has six councillors and Ciudadanos has five. But it would be the support of Cambiemos/ podemos, with three councillors, that would be the key for the motion of censure to come to fruition, as they would then outnumber the pp and Vox who have eleven councillors in all. later that same day the Mayor sacked the five Ciudadanos councillors, José aix, luisa Boné, Mar ezcurra, Ángel noguera and antonio Sánchez, from the coalition government. he also dismissed all of the Ciudadanos advisers and the local mayors that had been previously appointed by the C’s. the saga then took a further twist as the provincial coordinator of Ciudadanos for alicante, Javier Gutiérrez , said

Emilio Bascuñana

that the motion of censure against emilio Bascuñana, “does not have the support of the party”, and therefore, it is not endorsed by either Valencia or Madrid. he went on to say that the five Ciudadanos councillors did not have party approval to form a new coalition government with the pSoe and could now be facing disciplinary measures of their own. however, José aix, said that he has not received any communication from his Ciudadanos bosses in alicante regarding the opening of a disciplinary file before going on to say later last week, that pSoe and Ciudadanos had already agreed on an “urgent and social” budget for orihuela which will be introduced as soon as they assume government. it is understood that the full agreement will be made public

in the coming days. on Friday the pp orihuela said that if the move goes ahead, twenty projects “will be put in serious danger”. Spokesman rafael almagro said that the motion of censure “comes loaded with folly and personal interests and it will sow instability and chaos”. Meanwhile, despite the loss of the five councillors, Mayor emilio Bascuñana, still went on to restructure his government team with Councillor rafael almagro adding Culture to his current role while dámaso aparicio assumes Youth and Beaches. Víctor Valverde assumes infrastructure, Services and Maintenance, parks and Gardens, Water and public lighting while Bascuñana retains the powers of Urbanism and planning, human resources, Security and education.

Masks to be voluntary after Easter Masks will no longer be compulsory in indoor areas anywhere in Spain from 20th april, although many members of the public say they will keep wearing them. Given that the incidence of Covid-19 has improved dramatically and medical workers report that those who catch it are very unlikely to need hospital treatment if they have been vaccinated, Spain’s government has opted to drop the requirement to use face coverings behind closed doors once easter is over. Some exceptions will apply – masks must still be worn on public transport, including in taxis, and also in any medical centres such as Gp surgeries, hospitals, day-care or rehabilitation centres, nursing homes and other sheltered accommodation. the requirement applies to

the general public as well as those working in these areas. health minister Carolina darías says these exceptions largely translate to places where ‘vulnerable’ people are most likely to be – the elderly, sick or both – but says they will no longer be necessary in schools. as for other workplaces, such as offices or shops, the government will leave it up to companies’ individual risk management teams to decide whether they want to keep compulsory mask-wearing in place. health professionals consulted agree with masks no longer being obligatory, but support the ministry’s campaign to convince the public to continue wearing them as a voluntary measure. they are ‘strongly recommended’ in certain indoor areas, and the government

has appealed to the public to ‘use their common sense’. these include areas such as: crowded places, indoors or out. For example; shopping centres, street markets, supermarkets and other retail premises, museums, cinemas, theatres, concert halls, nightclubs and bars, or anywhere that serves food and drink except when actually taking mouthfuls. experts believe mask-wearing will be largely unnecessary in summer, when ‘social interaction is mainly outdoors’, and that for masks to become compulsory again in autumn, ‘things would have to change a great deal from now’. they predict autumn and winter will bring ‘outbreaks’, but not ‘huge, powerful waves’ of contagion like in the past, and that ‘very local measures’ might be necessary – though ‘not national ones’.

Amazing success at Coopers fundraiser Coopers Bar don’t do anything by halves and the same can certainly be said about their recent Ukraine fundraising day. the bar hosted a jam packed fun day which resulted in raising over €4500 for local food bank charity a helping hand which is working directly with Ukrainian families who have fled to Spain. organisers wanted to thank the 12 singers who gave their time for free on the day as well as the amazing Big FM who were there all day and provided

entertainment, equipment and expert sound management. the money was raised through a combination of raffles, auctions, games and a tombola. there were also a number of market stalls who made a donation to appear, and some also added a special charity item alongside their usual wares, such as Ukraine themed cakes with profits going to the charity day. thanks also go to all of those who came to support the day and gave so

generously. everyone agreed that it was a great day for a great cause. the funds raised went to a helping hand Costa Blanca’s Ukranian appeal. Fundraiser pam told the Costa Blanca people, “nikki lloyd is the head of a helping hand registered charity. We’re supporting Ukrainians that come onto our books and finding out what they need. So for example with this donation, she’s buying them medication as they don’t yet have Sip cards. they also need underwear, shoes etc - anything they need on top of feeding them. We are supporting some of the local families that took Ukrainian families in. this is all on top of the 250 families that we are already feeding!” pam continued, “We have a group of dedicated volunteers that help sort the donations of food and clothes. nikki is then responsible for buying all the things that we haven’t received from donations. We supply families with basic food packs including bread , milk, rice, pasta, cheese, some meat , cooking oil as well as hygiene products. For families with children we supply nappies if necessary, baby milk and food for the children to have a packed lunch for school. Many pregnant women come that have nothing for the baby so we are able to acquire clothes, cots and prams and all the things that they need so that they are ready for when the baby is born.” to find out how to support a helping hand contact the charity through its Facebook page ‘a helping hand – Food & Clothes Bank Costa Blanca.’

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP GBp/USd has been on a cycle of gradually depreciating rages each week for 4 weeks in a row now. this week, cable* as the pair is affectionately known in markets, has managed a meagre 141 pip range since Monday. if anything, the dollar has had the slightest of advantages, especially with markets tilted toward risk aversion, and the greenback riding high elsewhere (see USd). therefore, pressure to the downside of the recent range – just above 1.3000, has been slightly more evident than the pound breaking higher and beyond 1.3200. perhaps one of the biggest reasons for the lacklustre range is the fact that there has been very little meaningful data for markets to get their teeth into this week, aside perhaps from another jump in UK house prices. after the Boe governor, andrew Baily, failed to give markets any new insight into the Boe’s thoughts on Monday, markets have had to feast on scraps for the most part. next week looks an entirely different kettle of fish, with a plethora of keynote UK data releases shoehorned into the short 4-day week. of note, UK jobs, Cpi/ppi, industrial and Manufacturing production really stand out, but there is more, and we could literally go from nothing to information overload. GBp/eUr has been the far more active pairing through this week. however, the moves here have been fuelled by the war in Ukraine, and what that has been doing to the single currency (see eUr). therefore, and as a consequence, the recovery for the pound has been strong, with the pair moving steadily up from under 1.1800 last week, to topping out at just over 1.2000. Much the same as GBp/USd, there is a strong chance that the directional bias will be driven by UK data next week, although the eCB meeting will undoubtedly have an impact on the single

currency from thursday. *did you know? Cable takes its name from way back when the GBp/USd exchange rate used to be transmitted across the atlantic literally by a submarine communications cable. traders often referred to the currency pair as ‘the old cable rate’. Cable refers explicitly to the GBp/ USd currency pairing, as opposed to the pound or dollar individually. EURO the latest eCB meeting minutes, released yesterday, gave markets a rather hawkish surprise from the eCB. they mentioned that a large number of governing council members viewed the high level and persistence of inflation as warranting immediate steps toward policy normalisation. that, roughly translated, means that more members of the eCB are now getting twitchy, and markets are now starting (again) to re-price eCB rate hike expectations for the second half of this year. We have been wondering for some time whether/when the persistently high inflation in the region forces a re-think by the eCB on the timing of the removal of Qe, leading to a faster rate hike. the eCB have said on many occasions that they will not consider raising rates until Qe has stopped, so the ending of Qe in europe is the first stage. next week’s eCB meeting could well be the one that the change happens then. the single currency responded positively to the news from those previous eCB minutes. however, the move was hardly compelling. eUr/ USd popped over 1.0900 for a short spell and GBp/eUr, drifted back under 1.2000, however, the moves were fairly restrained. perhaps part of the reason is down to Ukraine, and with extra sanctions this week, markets have been much more skittish and risk averse.

Cloud storage safely and securely saves your data to a remote database, so you don’t have to store your data and files

to your computer hard drive or other storage device. Cloud storage has many advantages over hard drive storage. First, you don’t have to physically possess the storage device as you would with a flash drive, for example, so you don’t run the risk of losing irreplaceable data. Second, cloud storage makes it easy to share content. Just share a folder with a friend or family member and they can instantly access the content within it. another great reason to use cloud storage is the cost savings. it’s much more affordable - and smart - to buy unlimited cloud storage for a nominal fee rather than buying and maintaining lots of hard drive storage space. Free instant-access online storage dropbox: 2GB free (up to 18GB with referrals) Google drive: 15GB free. onedrive: 5GB free (1tB for students and those who subscribe to office 365) Mega: 15GB free iCloud: 5GB free. amazon drive: 5GB (+ unlimited photos with prime) Box: 10GB free. How does Cloud Storage work? in cloud computing, cloud storage services work as a network of connected data

servers collectively used to share and access your files across devices. Cloud storage providers own and maintain the offsite servers that make up this network at their data centers. Users can upload files to the servers and access their cloud data via website, desktop app, or mobile app. Cloud sharing Cloud file sharing can be defined as a service that provides simultaneous access for multiple users to a common set of file data in the cloud. Security for file sharing in the cloud is managed with user and group permissions enabling administrators to tightly control access to the shared file data. people share files online every day, from memes and videos to sensitive documents. While a lot of content gets shared on social media, cloud storage services offer a more secure place to store and share your files. Use Windows explorer or File Manager to create folders and copy files to your selected Cloud Storage. Contact me if you need help setting up and using Cloud Storage. World first as covid detected in an otter in the Valencian Community a team of Spanish scientists has identified the first case of covid-19 in a eurasian river otter (lutra lutra), located near a reservoir in the Valencian Community. the researchers, who attribute the contagion to the probable contact with contaminated wastewater, insist on the need to establish a monitoring system for coronavirus in wild mustelids (mammals of the weasel family including stoat, weasel, otter and mink), since they could become so called reservoirs of the virus. this latest finding represents the first case of detection of the virus in an otter worldwide, and has just been published in the international scientific journal ‘Frontiers in Veterinary Science’. Virus detection was performed using two different types of pCr tests on rna extracted from the animal’s nasopharynx by swab and from lung tissue and mediastinal lymph nodes. Samples from two additional otters from distant sites were negative in identical tests. the research, carried out by scientists from the CeU Cardenal herrera University (CeU UCh) in Valencia, the Valencia institute of Biomedicine (CSiC) and the autonomous University of Barcelona (UaB), confirmed human origin of the contagion, although the initial origin of this emerging infectious disease is

probably animal. animals have been involved in all three known outbreaks of coronavirus severe respiratory syndrome, recorded in 2005, 2012, and 2019. the pandemic nature of the SarSCoV-2 outbreak increases the likelihood of human-derived infections in susceptible animal species. which, therefore, could become secondary viral hosts and even disease reservoirs said researchers. Consuelo rubio, principal investigator of the Molecular Virology Group at CeU UCh and co-author of the study, pointed out that in the sequencing of the virus, changes were discovered that had already been identified in samples from human patients, “which points to the human origin of the virus detected in this wild otter, although its specific combination was different”. “the contagion could have

occurred through contact with wastewater contaminated with the virus present in the river area inhabited by the otter,” added rubio. this same team of researchers also detected in May last year two positive cases of SarSCoV-2 coronavirus in wild american mink, in two rivers in the province of Castellón. these were the first cases in europe of the virus in wild animals, which had not been in direct contact with infected people. “our findings in both mink and otter specimens highlight the need to establish a surveillance system for this coronavirus in wild mustelids,” rubio commented. “this would make it possible to assess the risk that these animals could become SarSCoV-2 reservoirs, giving rise to new mutations of the virus that could re-infect humans or other wild species.”

Expats warned to use Spanish Tourist Office in the UK apologises British bank notes expats with British money tucked away are in a race against time to spend paper £20 and £50 notes - because shops will stop accepting them in six months. the paper bills have been swapped for plastic replacements over the past two years to improve security. But there are still up to £19bn of old £20 and £50 banknotes in circulation in Britain - adding up to 775 million in separate notes. the deadline to use them is 30th September when they will no longer be legal tender and will be rejected in shops. the Bank of england says it will continue to swap old notes for their face value and the move comes after £5 and £10 notes were replaced over four years ago. people can post old notes to the Bank of england in london or deposit them at their local bank. the new bank notes include several newer security features including a change to the holograms which displays the text ‘twenty pounds’ and a seethrough window with a graphic of Big Ben. they also display the amount in a chequered colour when placed under an ultraviolet light. the new notes contain a

tactile feature to help vision impaired people identify the denomination. a Bank of england spokeswoman said: “all genuine Bank of england banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation retain their face value for all time.” the ‘indestructible’ polymer notes are difficult to tear and can survive being put through the washing machine and other spills. the banknotes are resistant to dirt and moisture, helping it to stay in better condition for longer and it is hoped each note will last up to three times longer than the previous paper versions. the Bank has wrung in the

changes to its iconography in recent years, including a redesign of its logo. it overhauled its 328-year-old logo of Britannia in an effort to become more ‘inclusive’, relieving her of her money in the process. the seal, which shows the female personification of the British isles, has been redesigned, with the Bank saying it wanted it to ‘reflect our current mission and values’. the Bank, which has not revealed the cost, says it has also made changes to its website to make it easier for people to read. While the entire logo hasn’t been changed, there are a number of obvious differences between the new and the old.

the Spanish tourist office in the UK issued a statement last Wednesday (6th april), which was incorrect and falsely raised the hopes of thousands of unvaccinated travellers wishing to travel to Spain. it was widely reported in the British national press. the statement said ‘from today, april 6th, non-vaccinated UK passengers could enter Spain with proof of a negative pCr or antigen test, or proof of diagnostic recovery and without the need to be double vaccinated’. the tourist office has now clarified the latest coronavirus regulations, published in Spain’s Boe, the official State Gazette, were misinterpreted and the statement was not correct. on its website the tourist office clarified that UK travellers aged 12 and above are still required to show proof of being fully-vaccinated or a certificate of recovery. there is

an exception for those aged 12 to 17 (inclusive) who can show a negative Covid test (pCr or similar) taken within 72 hours of arrival. pedro Medina, deputy director of the Spanish tourist office in the UK said: “We apologise unreservedly for the miscommunication earlier today which was due to a misunderstanding of the new entry requirements.” UK travellers aged 12 and above will need to fulfil the below criteria:

1. Certificate of vaccination: proof of being fullyvaccinated (with both doses of a two-dose vaccine or one dose of a one-dose vaccine) at least 14 days prior to arrival in Spain. if more than 270 days have passed since the final dose, certification of a booster vaccination is also required, except for teenagers aged 12 to 17 (inclusive).

2. Certificate of recovery: proof that the passenger has recovered from Covid. recovery certificates issued by the official authorities will be valid at least 11 days after the first naat diagnostic test or positive antigen screening test, carried out by qualified personnel. the certificate shall be valid for 180 days after the date of the first positive diagnostic test result. Children under 12 years old are exempt when travelling with an adult. From 6th april, children under 12 and those travelling to Spain with an eU Covid passport or equivalent (including nhS Covid travel pass) no longer need to complete the health Control Form (FCS in Spanish) prior to arrival. those without an eU Covid pass or equivalent must complete the health Control Form to show evidence of their vaccinations or certificate of recovery.

Jimmy Savile documentary dubbed ‘most disturbing thing on TV’ The new Jimmy Saville documentary “Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story” which was recently released on Netflix has been described by viewers as ‘the most unsettling piece of television’. The documentary uses extensive archive footage to examine the evil within the paedophile, and delves into how Savile managed to fool an entire nation for four decades. Savile was one of the UK’s most well known and loved TV personalities, however, after his death aged 84, in 2011, an investigation prompted more than 450 horrific allegations of sexual assault and abuse, with victims as young as five. The new documentary hears from a number of contributors as well as the monster himself talking in archive footage.

In one scene, Savile shot down reporter Philip Tibenham when asked whether he took up physical exercise in order to punish himself. ‘The only time you punish yourself is when you’re with young ladies,’ Savile replied, ‘Then you punish yourself because you’re such a villain. You should be kind to them. When you’re not kind to them and you squeeze them and make them go ouch and things like that.’ After the trailer for A British Horror Story was released last month, many expressed their concerns for the film, with one arguing it shouldn’t have been made. Others took to social media after watching the Netflix show, claiming it made them desperately uncomfortable to watch and described it as the most disturbing thing on TV.

Barcelona motorhome show A ‘not to be missed’ event for fans of motorhomes, campervans, static or towing caravans, Barcelona’s huge global trade fair dedicated to holidays on the road has been confirmed for 2022 after the Covid-19 pandemic put paid to the show for the previous two years. More than 600 brand-new makes and models of all types of caravan, from the basic oneroom campsite versions that hook onto the back of an average-sized family saloon car through to the height of luxury rivalling top hotels, will be on display at ‘Barcelona Fira’, or trade fair centre. At least 130 companies catering for all home-van needs have confirmed their presence. Taking place in the Gran Vía complex at Barcelona Fira between 16th October and 24th October, the Salón del Caravaning, as the fair is known, will take up nearly 7.5 acres of space. The largest of these will be for towing caravans and motorhomes, with 20 or so companies exhibiting. According to the organisers, the

key brands on display include Adrià, Benimar, Carthago, Challenger, Concorde, Dreamer, Elnagh, EuraMobile, Giotti, Itineo, Karmann, McLouis, Mobilvetta, Phoenix, Dranger, Rápido, Rimor, Roller, and Yakart. The second-largest section will be for campervans, with 31 exhibitors including Catalunya Van, Drop Campers, Furgokaravaning, Westfalia, Ford, Iveco, MercedesBenz, Nissan, and Toyota. Around 30 firms will be showcasing all types of gear aimed at making caravan and campervan trips - as well as camping or ‘glamping’ in tents - run as smoothly and as enjoyably as possible, ranging from pneumatic suspension systems, jacks and tow-bars, through to water-purifying and other hygienerelated chemicals, waste disposal systems, solar panels and batteries, and more along these lines. To open the fair to as wide an audience as possible, this forthcoming 35th edition includes a brand-new ‘outdoor activity’ section, focusing on camping, trail-hiking and adventure sports.

Spain bans harassment of women having abortions

Queen Letizia opens UK’s first Spanish art museum

Spain has criminalised the harassment or intimidation of women going for an abortion under new legislation approved recently by the Senate. The move, which involved changes to the penal code, means anti-abortion activists who try and convince women not to terminate their pregnancies could face up to a year behind bars. The measure was proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist party and will come into effect after being published in the official state bulletin in coming days. Anyone trying “to impede a woman from exercising her right to voluntarily interrupt pregnancy” through “bothersome, offensive, intimidating or threatening acts” will face jail time of between three and 12 months, or community service, the text says. In practice, the legislation criminalises protests outside of abortion clinics. The ban also applies to the harassment or intimidation of healthcare professionals working at abortion clinics. Staunchly Catholic Spain decriminalised abortion in 1985 in cases of rape, if a foetus is malformed or if a birth poses a serious physical or psychological risk to the mother. But the scope of the law was broadened in 2010 to allow abortion on demand in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. Even so, Spanish women still face obstacles, with “most” obstetriciangynaecologists in the public sector refusing to carry out such procedures, the OMC doctors’ association has said.

Queen Letizia of Spain teamed up with Britain’s Prince Charles recently to inaugurate the first UK museum dedicated exclusively to Spanish art, which is part of an ambitious town regeneration effort. Letizia, 49, and the 73-year-old British heir to the throne visited the new “Spanish Gallery” in Bishop Auckland, in northeast England, which boasts one of Europe’s best-preserved bishop’s palaces. The gallery is home to around 120 works by great Spanish masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, from El Greco and Murillo to Velasquez and Juan de Juanes. Philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer and his wife Jane, who are behind the new showcase, purchased 12 Zurbarán paintings as well as the palace in 2012 after learning the artworks were for sale. Jane Ruffer noted that the town had traditionally served the castle and its bishop over the centuries, but the couple wanted to reverse that with their present-day venture. A decade and £200 million pounds (240 million euros) later, the palace now comprises galleries, gardens and parks, with the Zurbarán paintings on display there.

When going to a private clinic, women are sometimes confronted by anti-abortion activists who try and persuade them not to end their pregnancies. As the legislation was being debated, anti-abortion activists from the Right to Life platform rallied outside the Senate against the “criminalisation” of their protests. According to a 2018 study by ACAI, which represents abortion clinics, 89 percent of Spanish women said they had felt harassed when attending an abortion clinic, and 66 percent said they felt threatened. Sanchez’s government is also working on a law to ensure that all public hospitals will offer abortions, and further legislation that will allow 16and 17-year-olds to end a pregnancy without permission from their parents as they currently can in the UK and France.

Eat through a stomach ache Everyone experiences an upset stomach and indigestion from time to time. And while it’s usually no cause for concern, there are many remedies one can try before seeking professional help. Cinnamon Cinnamon contains antioxidants that may help ease digestion and reduce the risk of irritation and damage in the digestive system. Other substances in cinnamon may also help reduce gas, bloating, and cramping. Basil Not only is basil a delicious herb, it also contains substances that can reduce gas, increase appetite, relieve cramping, and improve digestion. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Figs Figs contain substances that can act as laxatives to ease constipation and improve healthy bowel movements. They also contain compounds that may help ease indigestion. Fill up on Fibre One of the biggest stomach myths is that you have to go number two three times a day to have healthy bowels. The truth is that everyone poops, but not at the same frequency. If you’re

suffering with constipation, try to increase your fiber intake. This means eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans.

Mint In addition to freshening up one’s breath, the menthol in mint can help with indigestion, gas, and diarrhoea. Raw and cooked mint leaves are both great for consumption, in for example teas or in food.

Lime or lemon juice, baking soda, and water Mixing lime or lemon juice in water with a pinch of baking soda can help relieve a variety of digestive issues. This mix produces carbonic acid, which may help reduce gas and indigestion. Rice Plain rice is great for people with many types of stomach aches. Someone who is vomiting or has diarrhoea could try slowly eating half a cup of plain, well-

cooked rice, but it’s best to wait a few hours before doing so. Bananas Bananas contain vitamin B6, potassium, and folate, which are nutrients that can help ease cramps, pain, and muscle spasms. Bananas can also help alleviate diarrhoea. Liquorice Liquorice root contains substances that may help reduce gastritis, or inflammation of the stomach lining. Someone with an upset stomach could try drinking liquorice root tea several times a day until the symptoms improve. Ginger Ginger is a famous natural remedy for an upset stomach and indigestion. It contains chemicals called gingerols and shogaols that can help move foods that are causing indigestion through the stomach more quickly. It may also help reduce nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. So it’s great to add to your food or to make tea from. Avoid gas-producing veggies! If you’re dealing with an upset stomach, it could be the vegetables you’re consuming. It can easily be alleviated by avoiding gas-producing veggies, such as broccoli, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts.

How to eat more veggies Everyone knows that vegetables are exceptionally good for you. In fact, they’re the only food that you can eat without moderation. Versatile and tasty, vegetables can be prepared in a variety of ways. Here are some top tips to easily increase your vegetable intake. Make Soup We all have a few vegetables lying around in the back of the fridge. They’re still good, but may have lost some of their freshness. Making soup is just one way to use them up. As for how you make your soup, the sky’s the limit! Simply prepare your vegetables, cook them in a broth with a few herbs, and run the results through a blender - or not! Go Gradually If you don’t eat vegetables at all, suddenly deciding to buy a pound of each variety will quickly become overwhelming. You may feel pressured to eat all of that food in a short period of time. Instead, add one or two vegetables to your routine by incorporating them into your weekly menu, either as raw vegetables or as part of a meal. They’ll soon become second nature when you’re planning trips to the grocery store.

have vegetables! A simple solution is to freeze a few so you always have some on hand. Of course, you’ll need to follow certain steps. Blanching, freezing, and thawing must be done properly if you don’t want to lose a large quantity of vegetables.

Preserve Want fresh summer vegetables in the middle of winter? It’s possible with canning. All you need are a few jars, water, salt, and vegetables. To take it a step further, try lacto-fermentation, a simple preservation method that gives vegetables an interesting taste and offers excellent health benefits. Weekly Prep Here’s a very easy tip that’s often overlooked. On Saturday or Sunday, cut up a large batch of carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, or your favourite vegetables and store them in airtight containers.

Freeze Them Sometimes we don’t eat vegetables... because we don’t

When feeling peckish, reaching for your raw vegetables will be much easier if they’re already prepared. Go Veggie You like meat - so be it.That doesn’t mean you can’t like vegetables, too. Find two or three vegetarian recipes that you really like and cook them so often they become classic menu items. You’ll easily increase your vegetable intake. Hide Them! Zucchini bread, carrot cake, and cucumber-kale smoothies are just a few ways to hide vegetables so you won’t feel like that’s all you’re eating. They also come in handy when encouraging kids to eat more vegetables. Yet another option is to chop veggies very finely in a food processor to prevent any large pieces from showing up in your dishes.

Four years ago, my wife and I were told by our son that he was moving abroad. He’s always been a ‘bull at a gate’ and does things without fully researching them first. We have always let him do what he wanted as he’s got older particularly, and without interference, but we did give him money to set himself up. After four years our son has returned home and is blaming us for his failed venture. In that time of course we have had Lockdown and this appears to be where things got worse for him. What he actually said was that, as parents, we should have stood in his way and stopped him from making

a mistake. He now does not come and visit us, and won’t take our calls. Our job as parents is an impossible one at times isn’t it. We are damned if we do; and damned if we don’t. It is very easy to blame someone else if our life goes badly. However, your son is a grown adult. Possibly the fact that you did not object to the move, was giving him your approval. He also chose to see this as you being responsible for everything that happened thereafter. Children lack the life experience that we have had and it could only bode them well to take heed. Maybe this would prevent them from blaming

us; maybe it wouldn’t. But ultimately, your son is a grown adult and capable of making his own decisions whether they are a success, or a failure. If his move had been a success, would he now be thanking you, or congratulating himself?

“Let’s make Big Data wrong”, the new DGT campaign for Easter

“Let’s make Big Data wrong” is the slogan of the new awareness campaign to avoid traffic incidents that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has presented for Holy Week, a period in which there is an increase in movements, both long like short haul. After two years, in which this holiday period has been conditioned by the Coronavirus pandemic, this year forecasts suggest that 14.6 million long-distance trips may be produced on our roads. To avoid traffic incidents, the DGT has turned to one of the most important Big Data analysts in Spain who, with more than 10 million traffic accidents and through algorithms and mathematical models, has calculated the number of deaths on the road this Holy Week. According to this expert, there will be 36 people with different profiles who will die this holiday because Big Data, algorithms and statistics predict everything: age, how many men, women or children, in what place and at what time, what type of incidents and with what a vehicle... but if we know that we are within the profile of the people who are most likely to die and we are aware of it, we can avoid it and make Big Data wrong”. According to Pere Navarro, director of the DGT “when they tell you that 36 people are going to die this holiday on the road, you never think that it will be you or someone in your family, but behind each statistic there are names, parents, partners, friends, grandchildren... a real drama that is difficult to overcome; therefore this Easter and always, let’s abide by the rules to make Big Data wrong “. For the campaign, which will run until

19 April, two adverts of 45 and 30 seconds were created for television and social networks. In addition, a graphic for the written press and different pieces for networks have been created.

One device, two phases For this Holy Week, the DGT forecasts that 14.6 million long-distance journeys will take place, 2.10% less than those that occurred in Holy Week 2019. To ensure the safety and fluidity of traffic, the DGT has prepared a special device that will began at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, and end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday 18th April. This operation, one of the most conflictive of the year, due to the multitude of trips that take place in a short space of time, with similar origins and destinations and carried out on the same days and times, will be carried out in two phases, which coincide with the days with the greatest number of trips and on which almost 90% of the planned movements are concentrated. • The first phase, which took place last weekend, forecasted 3.7 million trips on the road.

• The second phase, considered the most important due to the volume of vehicle movements along the entire road network, will begin on Wednesday, April 13, except in Catalonia, which will begin the following day. This second phase will end at midnight on Monday, April 18 with the return operation, an operation that will take place from Saturday afternoon and will continue throughout Sunday and Easter Monday, since in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Valencian Community, Navarra, Basque Country and La Rioja, the Monday is a holiday. In the rest of the communities, despite not being a holiday, it is a non-school day for schoolchildren and university students, so it is expected that there will also be a significant number of return movements to the large urban centres that will be added to those of the working day. The importance of respecting the rules The greater the number of trips, the greater the exposure and therefore the greater the risk. With this premise, the DGT puts all the human and material resources at its disposal so that the established speeds are respected, there are no distractions, nor driving if alcohol or other drugs have been ingested and to avoid being ejected from the vehicle if the seat belt is incorrectly fastened, or you are simply not wearing it. In addition, the DGT recalls that on March 21 new traffic regulations came into force regarding speed, distraction, seat belt and alcohol, all of which are concurrent factors in road traffic incidents.

Mobile Phone Questions Answered Since the law in Spain changed recently, a number of questions have arisen regarding using a mobile phone when driving. Using a mobile phone when driving is never a good idea, since distractions are one of the principal contributing factors to road traffic collisions. In Spain, you risk a fine and the loss of 6 points from your licence. However, since the law changed, you don´t even have to be using the phone to commit an offence, simply holding the device can result in a penalty. This point has raised the first question.

Can you use a mobile phone as a navigation device? Yes, you can. However, there are rules. The phone must be secure, for example being carried in a cradle fixed to the vehicle’s dashboard. It must not interfere with your primary field of vision, so be careful if your cradle fixes to the windscreen. You must not touch the device when you are driving. If you need to reprogram your route, you must stop your vehicle in a safe, legal, and convenient location to do so. Can I use my mobile when stopped in traffic? No, you can’t. Being stopped in traffic, or at traffic lights, you are still considered as driving. Your sole attention must be the road. If you do touch or use your mobile in these circumstances, you risk a fine, in the same way as if you are moving. You must first stop your vehicle in a safe, legal, and convenient location. If I am a tourist, will I be fined? Yes, you will. If you are a driver who doesn’t hold a Spanish licence, so a UK

license holder for example, you will have to pay the fine to the traffic police on the stop. If you are unable to do so, they are able to impound your vehicle. Can I use a Bluetooth headset? No, you can’t. Having anything which is put into the ear is illegal in Spain. Therefore, Bluetooth headsets are banned. The same would apply if you were to be listening to music through headphones, this is not permitted.

Can I use my mobile when riding a bicycle or scooter? No, you can’t. When they are on the road, bicycles and scooters are classed as vehicles. Therefore, all laws which apply to larger vehicles such as cars apply to them too. Distractions are the leading cause of fatal incidents. In 2020, in 31% of fatal incidents, distractions were the contributing factor. Mobile phones are the main cause of distraction.

Busters Golf Society La Siesta Golf Society April 2022 golf report Alto Real Trophy April saw us returning to Alto Real to compete in our Alto Real Trophy for the tenth time, how time flies, seems only yesterday since those early days when we started Busters over a couple of beers at Alto Real golf course. The course had taken a bashing due to the previous two to three weeks of heavy rain, but with the camaraderie we have in our society we all still enjoyed competing for the winning place, after the game we returned to Little Leias bar in Quesada for our presentation only to find that the bar was being refurbished, however, Ian the boss of Little Leias turned up as we were sorting things out with the bar next door for somewhere to have our presentation, so all was well and we proceeded in the

neighbouring bar to award our prizes. Earlier in the day, prior to teeing off our new member Michael Lindstroem turned up with eight boxes of balls that he had gotten stamped with our Busters logo, giving us all a sleeve of balls which was a very nice gesture. Onto our presentation, our NTPs were won by Chris Soane on the 6th, Keith Loughrey took the eighth with Daniel Lindstroem winning hole seventeen, none of our members managed to hit the tenth green with their tee shot, those who returned to the bar took home wine that had been donated by our sponsors Ian the boss of Little Leias, in second place and taking home bottles of red and white wines

was Chris Soane who lost out to our winner Terry Sharley by one point, no one had a two so the two’s money went to our social fund, our card winner on the day was Daniel Lindstroem who selected Bolton. Barry Grinsell secretary

Abramovich eyes Valencia Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly keen on buying La Liga side Valencia, according to a rival contender who is suggesting the Russian oligarch is not finished with football. Abramovich, 55, put Chelsea up for sale after Government allegations he had a relationship with Russian President Vladimir

Putin, which he denies. But Miguel Zorio, who is a bidder for Valencia, has claimed that the Russian is competing with him to buy the La Liga club once the oligarch completes the sale of the Blues. Plaza Deportiva report a letter from Zorio as saying: “Peter Lim has tried to sell the club in London for €250million and has

not succeeded. Lately, he has leaked to international media that he has two purchase offers, mine and that of the Russian oligarch of Chelsea. And from here, I tell him that either he puts €50m every year to compensate for the losses he generates or he sells to us. Whether he likes it or not.”

St Patricks Day

On the 19th March 2022 “La Siesta” golf Society held their annual St Patrick´s Day event. The golf was played at Campoamor golf course. TALES fRoM THE ToP fLiGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Thank goodness Sky hadn’t spent any of their ad budget hyping that one up, eh? As predicted in this column just one week ago, Man City vs Liverpool was always going to be a dull draw and there was no need for Super Sunday to get all excited. Except, it was rather good really, wasn’t it? Before Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane had found something to agree on it was 1-1. Then City led again and before Pep’s plea to not concede early in the second half and finished being uttered, Liverpool levelled again. We had two of England’s many right-back options showing us that they just don’t defend like they used to back in the day. Mind you, Lee Dixon wouldn’t have assisted Diogo Jota like that either. We had Ederson dinking it over Jota’s legs on his own goal line in the middle of his own goal. We had Thiago making the most of the fact that Anthony Taylor had no intention of showing anyone a second yellow card at the Etihad. We had lots, really. These two sides are so far ahead of the rest of the Premier League it is untrue - sure, Chelsea are the current European champions (until the end of the week, anyway) but when it comes to the domestic game nobody comes close to City or Liverpool. In the end, a point each means City have a one-point advantage with seven to play - just try and find the game they need to lose for Liverpool to nick it off them. ‘A disgrace’ David de Gea called it - and he wasn’t talking about the damage to the Everton fans’ phone. Manchester United failed to score against a team that had conceded

three times to Burnley during the week. Yes, that Burnley team - the one that couldn’t score against Norwich on Sunday. In fairness, had Ronaldo not smashed some kids’ phone in yet another post-match tantrum I don’t think we’d have known he was at Goodison Park. This cannot be what the Portugal legend had in mind for his benefit season and he’s not been as bad as has been suggested - but he really, really was on Saturday. As Sean Dyche said, Everton might ‘have forgotten how to win’ heading into this match but if you need a team to give you back your confidence United are very much that side. Ralf Rangnick is looking like the guy who knows this will soon be someone else’s problem and the team clearly fancy seeing what the Europa Conference League is all about - new experiences and all that. It says a lot when your game plan gets killed by Fred going off injured and it would be fascinating to know on which page of the masterplan it says ‘and you can always play Harry

Maguire as a false nine’. Do Everton deserve some credit? Their fans do - the old stadium was rocking. But the team - well, there’s a reason they are still in a relegation battle. They won’t get to play United every week in the run-in. Tommy T had a chocolate-fuelled rage at his Chelsea side after back-toback to defeats and it seemed to do the trick. Chelsea beat Southampton 6-0 at St Mary’s and it coulda/ shoulda/woulda been more had they not downed tools for the last 30 thinking about the task awaiting them in Madrid. There can’t be too many managers who have lost in the Premier League 9-0 twice and 6-0 and still got a job - fair play Mr Hassenhuttl. Could it be much better for Spurs fans right now? Their team are looking organised, mean and rapid on the attack - their two ‘disappoining’ January signings are making decent claims to be the signings of the season. And, over the road, their local rivals are absolutely bottling their chances of finishing in the top four.

Kaneson linked up time and time again in Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Villa - a result that could have been a bit different if VIlla had taken at least one of the first half myriad of chances. But, sensing they were off the hook, Spurs ran riot in the second half. Arsenal, well they were facing a Brighton team unable to buy a goal or a win in the Premier League. Naturally, they got both at the Emirates. Newcastle haven’t had to worry about the drop for some time now. Another win for Eddie Howe’s men, this time against Wolves, sees them very much safe. Chris Wood got his first goal in front of his new home fans - make the most of it mate, as they’ll be upgrading you the first chance they get. Since they waved goodbye to Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds have started looking like a side capable of doing a bit of defending and they too ended their relegation fears smashing Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road. After avoiding the drop for so many years, it doesn’t feel right that the last thing on Roy Hodgson’s CV is going to be this - but you just cannot see them dragging anyone else into the mix. Leicester and Crystal Palace played out an entertaining but ultimately worthless game at the King Power. Leicester won 2-1 but it matters not. Christian Eriksen strolled around the Brentford midfield pulling the strings in their 2-0 over a surprisingly below-par West Ham. And right at the bottom, Norwich refuse to call it a day. They beat Burnley 2-0 at Carrow Road meaning they are a single point behind Watford, three behind the Clarets but - importantly - still seven behind the Ev having played a game more. Stranger things have happened though, right? OK - maybe not this strange but there are still 21 Norwich points to play for….

Harissa & lamb sausage rolls

Super easy haloumi salad Ingredients 250g pkt pearl couscous 2 x 250g pkts haloumi sliced 1 tbsp Moroccan spice mix 2 zucchini, sliced 250g cherry tomato medley, halved 1/2 cup fresh continental parsley leaves 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, torn 1 tbsp tahini 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt 1 small garlic clove, crushed 1 lemon, rind finely grated Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp pomegranate arils or 1 pomegranate, arils removed 2 wholemeal pita breads, toasted, torn Method STEP 1

Recipes

CostaBlancaPeople 12th - 18th April 2022

Cook couscous in a saucepan of boiling water following packet directions. Drain. STEP 2 Meanwhile, pat haloumi dry with paper towel. Sprinkle with spice mix. Spray a non-stick frying pan with oil. Heat pan over medium heat. Cook haloumi 1-2 minutes each side or until golden. Set aside. Spray pan with oil again. Cook zucchini 1-2 minutes until just coloured STEP 3 Combine couscous, zucchini, tomatoes, parsley and mint in a large bowl. Season well. Combine tahini, yoghurt, garlic and lemon rind in a small bowl. Season. Add lemon juice to taste. STEP4 Divide salad among serving bowls or arrange on a platter. Top with haloumi and pomegranate. Drizzle with dressing. Serve with pita.

Ingredients 600g lamb mince 2 tbsp shop-bought harissa 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon 1⁄2 tsp ground cumin 2 tbsp chopped coriander 1 garlic clove , grated 1 preserved lemon , rind finely chopped (discard the flesh) plain flour , for dusting 325g ready rolled puff pastry 1 large egg , lightly beaten 2 tsp black sesame seeds (optional) Method STEP 1 Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Mix together the lamb, harissa (see our recipe), spices, coriander, garlic, preserved lemon and seasoning in a bowl. Pummel it with your hands to make sure it’s well combined. STEP 2 Lightly dust your work surface with flour and lay the puff pastry on top. Cut it down the middle lengthways, then roll each piece with a rolling pin so each piece measures about 14 x 42cm. STEP 3 Divide the lamb mixture into four and roll each one into a sausage shape using your hands. Lay two of them, end to end, on one of the pieces of pastry. Brush some egg along one of the long sides of the pastry, just by the edge. Pull up the other side to encase the sausage shapes and press the sides

together. Do the same with the rest of the meat and pastry. STEP 4 Cut each pastry parcel into four. Transfer these to a baking sheet, then brush each sausage roll with the egg and sprinkle over the sesame seeds, if using. Bake for 20-25 mins, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden.

Strawberry shortcake slice Ingredients 600ml double cream 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste 1 tbsp orange blossom water 125g icing sugar , plus 2 tbsp 500g shortcake biscuits , plus 3 crushed 350g strawberries , sliced Method STEP 1 Line a 20cm cake tin or dish (either a square or rectangle works well) with cling film, leaving an overhang. Whip 500ml of the cream, the vanilla, orange blossom water and 125g icing sugar with an electric whisk until thick and billowy. STEP 2 Add a layer of biscuits to the tin, and spoon over some of the cream, about 1cm thick all over. Add a layer of strawberry

39

slices, then repeat with the cream, biscuits and strawberries until you fill the tin, finishing on a layer of biscuit. You’ll have some strawberries left over to serve. Press everything down well so every biscuit is covered in cream. Cover and chill overnight. STEP 3 To serve, flip the tin onto a serving plate, and remove the cling film. Whip the remaining 100ml cream with 1 tbsp icing sugar and dollop on top of the cake, swirling it around. Top with the remaining strawberry slices in lines, sift over the remaining 1 tbsp icing sugar, and sprinkle the biscuit crumbs in between the rows of strawberries. Cut into slices to serve.
