Torrevieja says NO to tourist tax torrevieja Councillors have taken to social media channels to protest the proposed tourist tax, saying now is not the time for such an initiative. the Valencian Community hopes to impose a tourist tax from 2024. torrevieja’s Mayor eduardo dolon said, “the city of torrevieja says no to this unreason and to this way of understanding politics without having the voice and interests of the productive

New speed traps for Torrevieja police

Councillor for international residents in torrevieja Gitte lund thomsen said, “With this new tax, tourists would have to pay a tax in connection with their stay. they already have it in Catalonia. if you stay at a hotel in Barcelona, besides paying for a hotel, which is usually paid by card, you have to pay a few cents or euros in cash as a tax. i think this is outrageous. Maybe there will come a time when you have to look at how

tourists can contribute more via fees to the community they visit, but this is not the time. right now it’s all about getting tourists. it seems that the fee will be voluntary for the council, so torrevieja will not apply it, but the problem is the international press that conveys the information and thus gives the Valencia region an image that damages our position in the competition for it international market.”

torrevieja local police are soon to take delivery of four new speed cameras. the town hall revealed it is going to allocate 60,000 euros to the purchase of new fixed speed cameras and is already testing a mobile vehicle license plate reader that it might also buy, although it hasn’t decided yet. the traffic department, headed by Councillor Federico alarcón (pp), believes that the most suitable locations for the new speed cameras would be the avenues of Cortes Valencianas and desiderio rodríguez. along both thoroughfares, the volume of traffic is usually quite high and the long straight nature of the roads does mean that some motorists travel with excessive speed. local police officers are also testing a device with license plate reading technology in their daily patrols. it is a tool with numerous applications that, above all, will save time and human resources to check if the vehicles are parked illegally, are insured or are wanted (if it has been reported stolen, involved in a crime, etc). the machine can automatically read surrounding number plates and if necessary, issue an alert.

Restaurants must offer free tap water to clients

From this week, bars and restaurants are obliged to offer free tap water to all customers. this is one of the measures included in the law on Waste and Contaminated Soil for a Circular economy. according to the new regulations, in order to reduce the consumption of single-use containers, hotel, bar and restaurant establishments must offer consumers the possibility of ‘unpackaged’ water free of charge.

No more masks tomorrow (Wednesday) we say goodbye to having to wear masks in most situations in Spain. Spain now joins several other european countries where masks are no longer mandatory, such as in, France, Germany and the netherlands. Some countries, such as portugal or italy, will continue to require a mask, although they plan to eliminate the obligation in May. Some health experts have criticised the move, saying removing the obligation to wear masks now is ‘premature’ and that they should remain in place in public places, especially in instances where a lot of people are congregating. the details of the royal decree (to be approved today, tuesday by the council of Ministers) are not yet confirmed but some of the main guidelines have already been made known. Mask Q&A When do I have to wear a mask? although the new law eliminates the mandatory use of masks indoors, there are some exceptions. it will continue to be required in the following circumstances: hospitals and ‘social’ health centres (day centres, residences for the elderly...). Family members, as well as patients when they are in common areas, must continue to wear the mask. the only exception is nursing homes where, as the Minister of health, Carolina darias, has outlined, residents will not have to use it, since it is “their home”. pharmacies, since they are considered health establishments to which vulnerable people go.

public transport (bus, metro, tram, plane, train, taxi, chauffeured vehicle...). If I have tested positive, can I go without a mask? no. people who test positive must continue to apply preventive measures. this means that social interactions should be reduced as much as possible, wearing a mask at all times and maintaining adequate hand hygiene during the 10 days after the onset of symptoms. Are masks compulsory at school? Face masks will no longer be mandatory in schools, secondary schools or other educational centres. the Ministry of health does recommend that vulnerable personnel, such as teachers or administrative staff, keep their masks on when the safety distance cannot be maintained. Can my boss make me wear a mask at work? Yes. although masks will no longer be compulsory in closed spaces,

by law, the decision to abolish them in each company will be the responsibility of those responsible for occupational health in each workplace. it is recommended that each company carry out a specific risk assessment and then decide. it is also recommended that masks be worn “whenever the work must be carried out at an interpersonal distance of less than 1.5 meters and adequate ventilation of the space cannot be guaranteed.” What about shops? here, the right of admission comes into play. although the end of indoor masks affects all public spaces, such as supermarkets, theatres, restaurants or beauty salons, those responsible for each business will be able to decide whether to ask that they be worn or not. For everywhere else, there is a recommendation of responsible use, for example, wearing your mask voluntarily in crowded places.

a fabulous fundraising day took place at evolutions Bar, la Fuente last week after having been postponed due to bad weather. one of the organisers Stevie Spit told the Costa Blanca people, “thank you so much to everyone that took part in our Ukraine Charity especially all the fantastic customers who were the real stars on the day!” the fundraiser gathered over €3,300 (and counting) and the proceeds will be split with half going to the red Cross Ukraine appeal and half funding a lorry full of food and medical supplies that organisers are sending directly to Ukraine. this will be the third shipment they have arranged. Stevie also said, “i want to give special thanks to all the wonderful entertainers - the JB Brass Band, Baz

Fisher, Stuart Sinclair, Simon Jackson, outlaw troubadour, the Jersey Boys experience, Chris packet, dale o’hanlan, Cindy Fitzpatrick and all the amazing staff at evo’s. Big shout out to audrey and linda also John and nanny Mcphee (Birthday Girl eileen Gleave) she was amazing as always. thanks a million to Suzi4Fitz for their amazing €1000 donation also thanks to the customers from hepburns & drivers Bar Villamartin for €170 and fantastic prizes from the laughing leprichaun and evos twin bar, the pitch n pint.” Stevie concluded by saying, “i really have to mention Mick who paid €110 for a royal Mint coin donated by Marion Skinner and he promptly gave it away to a lady whose daughter is on the frontline in Ukraine nursing. So the coin is going directly there.”

Ukrainian man assaulted by Russians in Torrevieja a 43 year old Ukrainian man was the victim of a brutal assault in torrevieja when he allegedly set upon by three russian men for saying ‘Glory Ukraine’. the incident took place at a bar in the town centre at 11:30 p.m. last Sunday night. reports indicate that three burly men entered the ‘tentaciones’ bar and ordered some drinks. the owner of the bar told them that she was about to close. they continued to insist, before 43 year old ruslan, who was waiting at the bar to clean up, told the men again that it was closing time. the men asked him where he was from and he replied “i’m Ukrainian. Glory Ukraine,” a saying without offensive nuances that resembles allez la France or viva españa. From the video footage of the assault, it seems that from there the men pounced on him. he was insulted and screamed at as the men rained down punches and kicks; blows to the head continued even while he was on the ground semi-conscious. the medical report included bruises and a broken nose. the next few days he could not even get out of bed due to his injuries, so it was not until Wednesday afternoon that he filed a complaint at the Guardia Civil headquarters in torreiveja, which is investigating

Ukrainian citizens gather outside the Guardia Civil headquarters to show their disgust following the assault of their fellow countryman

the incident. So far, two of the aggressors have been identified, russian brothers with a criminal record and known in the area for being involved in ‘conflictive’ episodes. Meanwhile, at the door of the Guardia Civil headquarters, several Ukranian compatriots showed their solidarity and support for ruslan, 43 years old and a resident of torrevieja for 23 years. the association of Ukrainians heart to heart torrevieja described the events as “barbaric” and “terrible cruelty”, saying it was a miracle that ruslan was not killed. they also state that they will provide

legal advice and psychological support to the victim. they have even hired a law firm, experts in criminal matters, to handle the case of a possible hate crime. there is concern and restlessness among the Ukrainian community following the incident: “We were afraid that something like this could happen and that the spark would fly as a result of the armed conflict”, although they hope that this was an isolated event that will not alter the peaceful coexistence that they have enjoyed for decades in a municipality with more than a hundred different nationalities.

19 people requested euthanasia the Valencian Community during first 10 months of new law it has been one year since Spain’s euthanasia law was passed by the Congress of deputites. the law made Spain one of the six countries in which euthanasia is legal and that guarantees that patients with a serious and incurable illnesses can receive help to die. the law came into action in June 2021 and in these first ten months there have been 19 people in the Valencian Community who have requested help to die, five of them in the province of alicante, according to the data provided by the Ministry of health. in the vast majority of cases, health authorities have given the go ahead to continue with the process. Four cases were dismissed for not meeting the requirements established by law and one of them is currently pending. 10 have already been euthanized and one passed away before the procedure could be carried out. these figures place the Valencian Community as the third highest in Spain, according to Marisa Velasco, spokesperson in alicante for the right to die association. however, this region is still far from the top two in terms of the the application of the law - Catalonia, with 50 cases already granted, and the Basque Country, with 34. the difference in figures, Velasco attributes to less information being made available about the law here. “We ask that there be training for professionals and information for citizens. it is not enough to post the information on a web page”. in Spain, those who have Spanish

nationality, residency or a registration certificate for more than 12 months, are of legal age and “are capable and aware” when they make the request, can receive assistance in dying. they must also suffer from a “serious and incurable disease.” the person who wants help in dying must submit two requests to their doctor in writing, separated by 15 days. next, the doctor must consult a second professional, the “consulting doctor”, who must verify compliance with the requirements within 10 calendar days and write a report. a Guarantee and evaluation Commission in each autonomous community is the body that has the last word when it comes to authorizing euthanasia. in the Valencian Community, this commission “works well and speeds up procedures and intervenes when there are difficulties”, explained Marisa Velasco. the problem sometimes comes from deadlines, since between the initial request and the practice of euthanasia, about 45 days usually elapse. “the law

is very ‘guaranteeing’ and long, which means that there are people who die before seeing their will fulfilled. palliative sedation is increasing and it is not by the will of the patients,” said the spokesperson for right to die alicante. the law also considers conscientious objection for health professionals who do not want to practice euthanasia. the Ministry of health, as established by the law, created a registry for each health department, to guarantee the right to conscientious objection by health workers. So far this year, in the Valencian Community there are twenty health workers who have declared themselves objectors, “a minimal number when compared to the bulk of professionals working in hospitals,” says Marisa Velasco. those successful in their request for euthanasia are given a substance that causes death and which can be administered by a health professional or self-administered under medical supervision in a public or private health centre or at the patient’s home.

60 applications have already been received to enroll in the training and tourism courses that allow them to start work in the hospitality sector. among the training courses offered by the Cdt of torrevieja is that of food handler, cook and kitchen assistant as well as waiter for bars and restaurants. 3,500 UKrainian reFUGeeS in the CitY oF torreVieJa the mayor reported that at the moment there are more than 3,500 citizens from Ukraine who have registered with the association of Ukrainians of torrevieja since the beginning of the russian invasion, which more than doubles the Ukrainian population registered in torrevieja from before the invasion, which was

Sofa swindlers caught Guardia Civil have arrested three people, alleged to be behind a sofa store scam. the gang are being charged with fraud in the amount of 543,095 euro and are accused of posing as a company claiming it manufactured and sold of sofas online. the company offered custom-made sofas at competitive prices. investigators have already located 175 victims across 21 Spanish provinces, although it is estimated that this number will increase as the investigation continues. at the end of last year, Guardia Civil opened an investigation after receiving a complaint in San Juan de alicante in which an injured party claimed that he had bought a sofa valued at 2,100 euro online, but that he had not received the product and the company had not returned the money or suggested a solution to the problem. officers verified that on its website, the company advertised the sale of custom-made sofas. the sofa swindlers presented themselves as a reputable brand, established in the national market, and claimed to work with well-known suppliers. they promised their customers a 100day trial and a five-year warranty on their products. the company offered sofas at very competitive prices, with payment plans offered in instalments or through financing. they promised to deliver the final product in less than 12 weeks. however, customers had the option to significantly cut delivery time by

paying for a rapid Service option, with an additional cost of 49 euros, or the premium Service option, for 89 euros. in this last type, the sofa would be received in a maximum of six weeks. Customers who had paid for sofas noticed that when the delivery period ended, they still had not received their product. they then tried to contact them by phone, by message or by email to check on the shipment. the person on the other end of the line would offer all kinds of excuses to justify the delay without ever admitting that in reality they had no intention of manufacturing the sofa or making the delivery. Many clients demanded a refund of the full amount, but investigators have verified no customer ever got their money back. in most cases, the company simply stopped responding to messages. at one point in the investigation, investigating officers verified that the premises of the store, with its

supposed headquarters in Gandía (Valencia), were found abandoned. however, the business had existed in the past. established in 2011, the company had a relatively normal commercial activity until april 2021, when business began to go bad. after that, it appears the people behind the scam took advantage of the trust built up over the previous ten years to dupe their victims. the three arrested were a 44-year-old man who was the administrator of the company and was in charge of relations with suppliers. his mother, a 62-yearold woman, did the accounting. the third detainee, a 45-year-old woman, was the salesperson and she managed financing contracts for the sofas for the clients who wanted to pay in instalments. the three had worked together in the past. to hide the swindled money, Guardia Civil say the three invested the profits obtained from the sofa scam overseas.

Criticism for pothole solution after heavy rains caused severe damage to many roads on orihuela Costa, the town hall has come under fire for its ‘quick fix’ solution of filling the potholes with sand. after the recent consistent and heavy rain, many motorists reported having damaged cars and witnessed accidents or near-misses caused by other drivers swerving to avoid severe potholes on local roads. aVCrl (the Cabo roig and lomas neighbourhood association) said “Filling potholes with sand is not acceptable, especially when it rains. at the moment, orihuela Costa has many

roads with a large number of potholes, which are causing damage to the vehicles of the residents. as we have repeatedly requested, it is very urgent to carry out the pothole filling and asphalting of the streets of orihuela Costa which require it.” the aVCrl took to social media to share two images, taken 7 hours apart. the first showed municipal workers filling the potholes with sand while the second, just hours later, showed how traffic and heavy rain had rendered the ‘sand solution’ useless.

Fishing boat with three tons of cocaine intercepted Guardia Civil, in a joint operation with national police and Customs Surveillance, intercepted a fishing boat loaded with more than 2,900 kilos of cocaine in waters south of the Canary islands. the drugs were hidden in one of the vessel’s fuel tanks. the operation led to the boarding of the ship, a 20-metre fishing vessel, named ‘aKt 1’, on the afternoon of april 13, some 300 nautical miles south of the Canary islands, bound for Spain. the operation came about as the result of international collaboration through the exchange of information between the MaoC-n (atlantic analysis and operations Center) and the CitCo (intelligence

Center against terrorism and organized Crime). Based on initial information, investigators from the Customs Surveillance Service, the Guardia Civil and the national police determined the possible involvement of a vessel suspected of illicit drug trafficking from South america in to europe. the crew of the vessel had attempted to camouflage the boat among the usual fishing fleet travelling a route close to a popular sub-Saharan fishing ground. authorities decided to board the vessel which was very complicated due to hazardous sea conditions and high winds. the boat was classed as ‘substandard’ boat (vessels that do not meet basic international

safety and navigation standards) with an engine in very poor condition. as police were transferring it to port, there was a fire on board which led to an emergency stop in the port of arguineguín (south of Gran Canaria) to check the status of the fishing vessel before finally heading to las palmas. Five crew members were arrested, four of turkish nationality and one Georgian citizen.

in the first quarter of the year, the environment unit of the police of the Generalitat Valenciana carried out 57 inspections of car workshop companies located in the alicante province and has denounced 30 for committing serious administrative infractions or being illegal. part of the sweep was ‘operation air’ which focused on the inspection of what are known as Cat companies (authorized treatment Center

for vehicles at the end of their useful life) and targeted those that did not comply with a correct management of polluting gases from refrigeration systems. Under this operation, supervised by the environment prosecutor, 30 companies have been inspected and nine people were charged with alleged crimes against the environment. the last inspection carried out by the Generalitat police task force took place in mid-March

when investigators detected illegalities in a Cat company and in a car workshop. the first did not have a Municipal opening license, industrial registry, or environmental Quality registry. For its part, the vehicle workshop did not have a Municipal opening license or industrial registration. the police have drawn up the corresponding reports and have sent them to the relevant bodies to determine the action to be taken.

Costa Blanca Pet Friendly ‘Costa Blanca pet Friendly’ is a new brand being launched by tourist authorities to help encourage tourists travelling with their pets to visit here. tourism bosses on the Costa Blanca are in the early stages of designing a brand new tourism product focused on the pet friendly market, where holiday experiences will be tailored to visitors and their pets. experts say there has been a boom in this particular niche market and there is a great opportunity to develop specialised offers for pet friendly holidays. to this end, the autonomous body of the provincial Council has sent a questionnaire to each to municipality and various associations that may be interested in offering these specific proposals. More than twenty alicante towns have shown interest in joining this initiative, which would have its own seal, ‘Costa Blanca pet Friendly’ for those establishments or towns that have exclusive areas for pets such as dog friendly parks parks, hiking routes and natural spaces with access for dogs, dog beaches or accommodation that admits pets, as well as any other specific pet friendly services. in Spain there are more than five million registered dogs spread over 4.5 million households, according to dog Vivant, a company that provides tools and resources to help businesses and destinations that want to promote dog-friendly tourism. in the Valencian Community, the average number of dogs per household is higher than the national average, according to

hostertur. the Valencian Community is experiencing a boom in these pet friendly trips in recent years with more and more people considering that their dog is a member of the family. people from alicante, for example, invest an average of 54 euros per month in caring for their dogs and more and more decide to travel with their dogs instead of leaving them in kennels. the president of the diputación and the tourist organization, Carlos Mazón, points out that this specialized pet focused initiative “is gaining more strength every day and is a segment on which we want to focus attention to encourage this market through a stamp

that allows visitors to and agencies locate services designed for their pets.” Mazón highlighted the fact that there are municipalities that have already shown “their interest in promoting this new tourist product, with infrastructures and spaces equipped for pets, but without forgetting the attention to their owners, whom we will retain with new practices , both in inland destinations and on the beach”. this project is included in ‘our plan Costa Blanca 2022’ which was unanimously approved a week ago. the tourism strategy is based on three fundamental axes developed by the provincial Board, together with the

tourism sector and the municipalities themselves: attendance, digitization and sustainability. the wider tourism plan focuses on the complete reopening of tourist activity, especially air travel, nightlife, hospitality and traditional and popular festivals and, on the other, on the use of public resources, such as funds european next Generation, in order to generate relevant projects and alliances. Mazón specifies that “the current scenario is still changing and new challenges are presented to us, but we know that our province is prepared thanks to the conglomerate of

www.costablancapeople.com

professionals that make up the Costa Blanca tourism sector.” in addition, the president of the provincial tourist Board thanked the people, entities, professionals and opposition groups for their work in helping this plan go ahead, saying this is “a project that belongs to everyone and to which everyone has contributed to promote a consolidated destination in the international arena.” Costa Blanca’s commitment in the short term focuses on increasing numbers and involving transport, accommodation and restaurant companies. activities will focus on heritage, the protection of the environment and the accessibility and inclusion of vulnerable groups. in terms of digitization, the focus will be to change traditional tourism management models with new tools to promote the local economy. José Mancebo, head of the tourism patronato for the Costa Blanca, outlined some of the actions that authorities are currently planning, such as ‘Costa Blanca pet Friendly’ tourism products, the return of la Vuelta Ciclista a españa to the alicante province next august, as well as strategic alliances for recovery, in collaboration with official organizations such as turespaña or turisme Comunitat Valenciana. Mancebo also took stock of the operations carried out during 2021, which included 23 promotions, ten national and eight international fairs, six communication campaigns, 25 familiarisation trips and press trips.

Coronation Street extra sacked after 36 years for taking photo A Coronation Street extra claims he was sacked from the popular UK soap despite 36 years of service after he broke set rules by taking picture with Andi Peters. 54 year old Matthew Davidge had spotted the Good Morning Britain presenter when, during filming last Friday, he went to use the bathroom. According to UK press reports, Peters was on set filming a competition segment for Good Morning Britain and a colleague of his took the photo of him and Matthew. The following Monday, Matthew learned he had been fired from his acting agency Industry Model Management. Reports claimed that the agency said Davidge breached the terms of his contract, which bans actors from using mobiles on set. The news came as a shock to Matthew who said he has taken selfies with several stars over the years including Peter Andre and Craig Revel Horwood.

Matthew told the Sun: ‘I’m speechless. I’ve worked on the set of Corrie on and off since 1986. I’ve never had a complaint and I’ve loved every minute of it’ A Coronation Street spokesman said: ‘A walk-on artist was seen breaching filming protocols and his agent was notified. ‘They decided on a course of action. Andi Peters was not aware of this complaint’ Davidge said ‘You’re not supposed to have your phone out on set but everyone does. It’s a rule that’s never really been enforced. When I asked him for a photograph it was all a bit of a laugh and he smiled and said, ‘No problem’. The whole interaction took less than a minute. Now I don’t know how I’m going to pay my bills.’ Matthew reportedly did about two shifts on Coronation Street per week, earning £180 in total.

Crescendo - fundraising success and plans for concert with Military Ladies Choir Crescendo International Choir raised 352 Euros for the Benijofar Food Bank after giving a standing-room only concert at the Iglesia Santiago Apóstol in Benijofar on Saturday April 9. This was the first time Crescendo has given a concert since the pandemic arrived in Spain in 2020. Judging from the size of the crowd and the money raised for a local charity, it was a big success. The choir performed a variety of music in both English and Spanish. Some of the best known songs the choir performed included Viva la Vida by British rock band Coldplay, Thank you for the Music by the Swedish pop group ABBA and You Raise Me Up, composed by a Norwegian-Irish duo called Secret Garden. One of the best known Spanish songs performed was Si Tu Me Dices Ven by the Mexican musician Alfredo Gil, founder of the band Trio Los Panchos. Crescendo International Choir’s next performance will be at Salt Church in Los Montesinos on Saturday May 7at 6 pm. The choir will be giving a concert with the Chivenor Military Ladies Choir. Concert tickets previously sold for the 2021 cancelled concert are valid for this concert. Tickets can still be purchased from Mags by calling 688 707

Keepers at Terra Natura Benidorm rescue a baby spotted deer The team of veterinarians and keepers at Terra Natura Benidorm have rescued a baby chital, also known as a spotted deer (Axis axis), which had been rejected by its mother when it was born. The group of experts undertook the park’s manual feeding protocol to guarantee the survival of this calf, since if it were not bottle-fed it would perish. After detecting that the calf was alone in the Asian prairie and no female in the herd was in charge of its feeding and care, the park keepers had to intervene and start the feeding process using formula bottles. In total, he is being given five bottles of 200 milliliters of milk a day. When he is one month old, keepers will begin to offer forage and specific feed for the weaning phase, so that his diet will be gradually modified until he is completely transitioned on to solid food. From the sixth or eighth week, milk will be completely withdrawn, focusing his diet exclusively on vegetable matter, feed and forage. The rejection of offspring by a mother deer can be caused by different reasons. One of them is that the mother is a first-timer and does not know how to act with the calf. On other occasions, the mother may be too weak and does not feel strong enough to take care of her calf, or it may also be due to the fact that the

calf is born with some problem or extreme weakness, which makes the mother instinctively reject it as she considers that it does not have a chance to survive naturally. Until now, this little calf has been separated from the rest of the deer herd and is being kept in a fully equipped and heated room at Terra Natura veterinary

clinic. When he moves to the main park, he will initially stay in the internal enclosure during the day to get used to the smell of the rest of the deer family, and in a couple of weeks he will spend the night there as well. When he adapts to herd, he will be permanently transferred to live with the rest of the family.

Fake saffron gang busted Guardia Civil arrested 11 people and dismantled a criminal gang dedicated to the sale of supposed ‘saffron’ that turned out to be molecularly modified gardenia, imported from China and that had generated more than 3 million euro of illegal profit. As reported in a statement by the Guardia Civil, as part of the operation carried out by Seprona, the Guardia’s environmental wing, 11 people have been arrested and are now under investigation for crimes against Public Health (agri-food fraud), fraud and belonging to a criminal group. As part of the operation, which was carried out simultaneously in Alicante, Malaga, Barcelona, Granada and Almería, three companies have also been investigated, through which those involved

in the fraud are believed to have marketed powdered gardenia extract as if it were saffron, all over Spain. The criminal gang had developed an undetectable agri-food fraud method using the latest technology, changing gardenia at a molecular level. Gardenia has a colour very similar to saffron but costs significantly less, since gardenia can be harvested industrially, while saffron must be gathered manually, due to the delicacy of the product. The harvest price of saffron is 10 times higher than that of gardenia. Gardenia is not considered food in the European Union, so those investigated imported this extract without meeting any safety standard and breaching European protocols regarding health and food quality. Those arrested are believed

to have imported different extracts of gardenia from a factory in China dedicated to the production of dyes. Once the product was shipped to Spain, it was introduced into the wider market through large food distribution companies. Guardia Civil believe that those investigated would have obtained a minimum benefit of more than 3 million euro, taking into account that they may have been bringing this product from China into Spain since 2013. The purchase price was so low that by marketing it here, the criminals obtained profits close to 800%. More than 2,000 kilos of alleged adulterated saffron valued at more than 750,000 euros have been seized and withdrawn from the market.

What to do when the bugs bite When it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, mosquito bites seem to be an unavoidable evil, especially in humid weather. While bees and wasps inject venom when they sting, mosquitoes inject a proboscis, which looks like a tiny straw, to suck up tiny amounts of your blood and release anti-clotting agents. The immune system reacts by releasing histamine, which creates a small, itchy bump. In other words, what you know to be a mosquito bite is not the bite itself, but your body’s allergic reaction to substances that bite leaves behind. While home fixes for mosquito bites allow you to avoid toxic pesticides, mosquito bites can be risky, too. Children are more susceptible to large and pesky mosquito bites than adults, and while most bites are harmless, some people have a severe, even lifethreatening allergic reaction. The best way to prevent mosquito bites naturally is to avoid the bugs themselves and know your own risk. Mosquitoes seem to be especially attracted to larger people and pregnant women. They are also attracted to sweet-smelling lotions and perfumes. Know that some mosquito breeds prefer dawn and dusk, while others love the hottest times of the day. Steer clear of standing water, where mosquitoes breed and swarm, and cover up and wear light-coloured long sleeves and pants when you’re near an infested area. If you can, try to sleep in an airconditioned area (versus an open-air room), or consider putting mosquito netting around beds. Getting relief For immediate relief, try an antihistamine cream or stick to help the itch and swelling. Don’t have any in stock? Hit the kitchen, and hold a refrigerated, dampened green tea bag on the bite, recommend the experts. The cold helps soothe the itch, and compounds in the tea help with inflammation. Another option: Take a soak in a soothing oatmeal bath. Putting tape (or a bandage) on the bite will help remind you not to scratch, especially at night. If you scratch too hard, you could break the skin and introduce an infection. Aloe Vera has

anti-inflammatory properties, so this could help with the itch. For even more relief, stash your aloe vera gel in the fridge, since the cold will also help with the itchiness. Another topical treatment that may help is Preparation H which can help reduce inflammation and may help with itching. This is also true of alcohol, Witch Hazel, tee tree and hand sanitizer, and their stinging sensation helps distract you from the itch.

Prevention is better than cure Dry Ice The carbon dioxide that we exhale attracts mosquitoes. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide which evaporates into gas as it melts. So, place dry ice in a wide container and keep it at a distance. When all the mosquitoes are attracted towards that container, close the lid. While this can be a little timeconsuming, but it is an effective method to drive away mosquitoes. Coffee Grounds One simple home remedy to repel mosquitoes is coffee grounds. All you need to do is just sprinkle coffee grounds wherever you find stagnant water near your house. The mosquito eggs present in the water will be forced to come to the surface of the water due to the coffee grounds. As they come to the surface, they will be deprived of oxygen. This will kill them before they hatch and will prevent mosquitoes from breeding Mosquito Traps You can buy a mosquito trap from the market or can easily make it at home. For preparing homemade mosquito trap, you need a plastic bottle. Cut the bottle in half and add some brown sugar to hot water. When it cools down, pour the solution into the bottom half of the bottle. Now, add yeast. Take the top half of the bottle and place it upside down into the bottom half. The bottle opening should not be submerged in the sugar solution but sitting just above. Use some tape to hold the pieces together, leaving the top uncovered. Place it in a mosquito-prone area.

The mosquitos will fly down through the bottle top into the sugar solution and drown. Change the solution in the bottle after every 2 weeks.

Camphor Camphor is another home remedy to get rid of mosquitoes in an environment-friendly manner. Just close all the doors and windows of the room. Then light camphor and leave it for about half an hour. When you return, you will not find any mosquitoes. You can also use camphor balls and Neem oil as a natural mosquito repellent. All you need is 3-4 Camphor balls, 1 cup Neem oil and 1 emptied refill bottle. Fill the bottle with the given ingredients and then fix the bottle to the machine. Now you can use this as a natural mosquito repellent device.

Garlic Extract of garlic has mosquito larvicidal properties. Crush a few cloves of garlic and boil the crushed garlic in water. Then pour this homemade mosquito repellent in a spray bottle and squirt it around the room. This remedy will kill the mosquitoes. Eat garlic daily to avoid mosquito bites. You can also rub a garlic clove directly on the skin. Lemon eucalyptus Lemon eucalyptus also known as Corymbia Citriodora, is a tall tree widely grown in Australia. Oil from the leaves of this tree has excellent mosquito repellent properties. You can apply this oil to your skin to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

www.costablancapeople.com

Holy Basil Holy basil leaves are known to kill the mosquito larvae and so check the breeding of mosquitoes. Just plant a holy basil plant in your garden and at the entry points of your home. You can also spray basil oil to repel mosquitoes.

Rosemary Rosemary is a natural insect repellent. It is closely related to mint and lavender and has similar insecticide properties. Burn a few stalks of rosemary. The aroma that arises thereof will drive out the mosquitoes.

Citronella Oil Citronella oil is the best essential oil when it comes to preventing mosquitoes. Apply citronella oil all over the body. You can also inject a few drops of this essential oil in a candle and light it up. Or else, put it in a spray bottle and spray it in mosquito-prone areas.

Mosquito Repellent Plants Grow plants that repel mosquitoes such as catnip and feverfew in flower beds. Or grow them in pots and strategically place them in mosquitoprone areas.

Mint The strong odour of mint, which most of us love, is loathed by mosquitoes. You can take fresh mint, mint oil or mint extracts to keep mosquitoes away. Mint oil can be used as a fumigator by pouring it into a spray bottle, or you can apply it on the exposed parts of your body. Alternatively, grow mint shrubs in your garden. Lavender Oil The smell of lavender oil can keep away mosquitoes as effectively as any commercial repellent. The smell of the lavender flower and oil is very strong and mosquitoes can’t tolerate it. Therefore, spray lavender oil it in the room. Or you can also apply it to your face and other parts of the body which remain exposed. Alternatively, you can also spray lavender-scented room fresheners that are easily available in the market. You can also grow lavender plants around the house and garden to keep mosquitoes away. Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil is one of the effective essential oils to get rid of insects. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties work wonders when it comes to fighting off mosquitoes. The strong odour of the tea tree oil keeps the mosquitoes at bay. All you need to do is mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a few drops of water and apply this mixture on your face and other exposed parts of your body.

Clove Oil Many chemical repellents contain clove oil as their active ingredient because it has such good mosquito repellent properties. This natural ingredient can be irritating to the skin so use it wisely. Vetiver Oil of vetiver has soothing aroma with exceptional insect repellent properties. Spray few drops of this oil to get rid of mosquitoes. Your local health shop will sell it. Do’s • When going to bed, make sure to hang a mosquito net. All the mosquito repellent coils or creams work for a few hours. Thereafter, the effect decreases. Hanging a mosquito net at night while sleeping will keep mosquitoes away. • Keep all the doors and windows of your house closed to prevent the entry of mosquitoes. Use wire mash on doors and windows. • Whenever you see mosquitoes flying around you, kill them immediately. This will make your atmosphere mosquito-free and avoid bites. • Mosquitoes are attracted by light. So use mosquito-repellent lights such as sodium lamps, yellow bug lights or LED lights in your house. Don’ts • Do not allow any water to stand near your house. Stagnant water is where mosquitoes breed and multiply.

My neighbours went back to Ireland to visit family, and asked me to look after their cat. While they were there, the husband sadly died. She got in touch and asked me to continue looking after the cat because they were having the Funeral at home. At first, I was happy to help out and she sent money over for food. Then after five weeks of me phoning her, and her assuring me she was coming back, I did not receive any more money. I have only heard from her once in three months since, and that is only because I telephoned her from a different phone; I think she had blocked my number, and when she answered, she seemed very surprised and irritated that I’d managed to speak

to her. I asked her what her plans were and what she intended doing about her cat. She said she had a lot to sort out at home, and would send money, but never did. I never wanted this responsibility in the first place, and feel I am being used. The cat also got sick, and I had to pay for vet’s bills. I have heard from a friend of hers that she intends staying in Ireland. Can you advise what would be the correct thing to do in this case? You tell me you have this lady’s address in Ireland. If this were me, I would write a recorded delivery letter, telling this lady that you intend to find the cat a new home within a certain time limit, say one month from her receiving the letter. There are many cat rehoming charities,

and you could go to one of them to take the cat, and hopefully get her adopted by someone who wants her. To avoid any repercussions, you might even send a letter via a Solicitor. It will cost money, but you will have done the right thing and legally you should be covered if this lady decides to pursue you for recompense in any way.

Mysterious hepatitis outbreak Scientists are searching for the cause of a strange and alarming outbreak of severe hepatitis in young children, with 74 cases documented in the United Kingdom and three in Spain. Clinicians in Denmark and the Netherlands are also reporting similar cases. Viruses can cause hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver, but otherwise-healthy children rarely become seriously ill. So far, none of the U.K. or Spanish children have died, but some are very sick: All have been admitted to hospitals and seven required liver transplants, six of them in the United Kingdom, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) statement.

New signs for electric charging points

The General Directorate of Traffic has published a new Instruction, which includes the new signage to help identify the location and main characteristics of electric charging points on the roads. The electric recharging points already installed on highways and urban roads needed to be marked and included in the Official Catalogue of Road Signs, for which the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and the Ministry of the Interior, through the General Directorate of Traffic, began to work together with the aim of agreeing on its content in line with the signals that already exist in other countries of the European Union. In addition, the corresponding “electric vehicle” pictogram has also been agreed upon for use when it is necessary to specify that the scope of a certain signage refers to this type of vehicle.

1. Pictogram of the signalling of the recharging points on the roads: The recharging points will be marked on the roads with the signs whose pictogram and meaning are indicated below: A) “Fuel dispenser and electric recharging station. Indicates the location of a fuel dispenser or service station with availability of an electric recharging station” B) “Electric charging station. Indicates the location of an electrical charging station” C) “Fuel dispenser, LPG and electric recharging station. Indicates the

location of a fuel dispenser or service station with availability of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or autogas and electric recharging station”

2. Electric vehicle signalling pictogram The electric vehicle pictogram will be used when it is necessary to indicate that the scope of the signage refers to this type of vehicle. All these pictograms may be placed individually or collectively on the service signs that you can find both on the road and in urban areas. The instruction comes into force this week and the newly installed signs must conform to the formats contained therein. However, its application will be progressive as the signs are renewed due to their state of conservation.

Black Boxes in Your Car: What you need to know From 6 July, newly approved cars and light vans in Europe must have up to eight support systems installed, among which the most controversial and innovative are the so-called black boxes. As of July 2022, all newly approved cars sold in the European Union must equip up to eight new ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) driving assistance systems. This is what is stated in Regulation 2019/2144 of the European Parliament of November 27, also known as the General Security Regulation (RGS). In addition, throughout 2020 and 2021, various UN and EU Regulations have detailed the specific implementation of these aids. The issue of the inclusion of black boxes in private vehicles has caused a stir due to possible privacy invasion issues or how and for what purpose the data collected by these devices will be used. Here, we hope to answer some of your questions.

located under the centre console of the vehicle, just before the gear lever. Regardless of their location, these black boxes are intended to record and store certain vehicle information so that, in the event of an incident, it is possible to know what has happened in the moments before, during and after the incident. For this reason, they will record data (note, they will never record sounds or images) cyclically so that, in the event of an incident, they will have the data recorded during the 30 seconds prior to the incident and five seconds after.

different types of data, among which the speed of the vehicle, braking, engine revolutions, the force of the frontal and lateral impact, steering movements or the position of the accelerator. They will also record the operation of different security systems such as airbags, seat belts and driving assistants. All records will, of course, have a chronological reference, as this box will always record the time and date of the incident.

Who will be able to access this data and for what? Obtaining data from the black boxes, which can be collected by connecting them to a specific CDR device (Crash Data Retrieval) which, in turn, will be connected to a computer; It will be the sole responsibility of the authorities of each country. This Regulation insists on the privacy of drivers and states that there will be “the possibility of identifying the owner or possessor of a specific vehicle on the basis of the stored data”. This means that, as the DGT points out, these black boxes do not store “personal data, such as the name, age or sex of the driver” and insists that “they do not serve to settle guilt in an incident, but they do to analyse the causes and encourage better driving”. And the rest of the mandatory systems as of July are… Along with the black boxes, there are other ADAS, whose first versions, “some manufacturers already began to incorporate around 2015”. This issue, and the fact that some of these ADAS are essential elements for vehicles to achieve a good score in tests such as EuroNCAP, have contributed to their widespread use in new vehicles. What objective does the EU pursue with the inclusion of this mandatory aid? Increase road safety and reduce road traffic incidents. And it is that, according to a study carried out by the European Parliament, the adoption of these systems could prevent 25,000 deaths and more than 140,000 injuries in the EU over the next 18 years.

What exactly are these black boxes? These devices are formally known as EDR (Event Data Recorder). They are approximately the size of a mobile phone and, according to the DGT, could be located under the driver’s seat, screwed to the vehicle’s chassis. Although other experts point out that these black boxes are likely to be added to the existing airbag control units, which are usually

In which vehicles should they be mounted? The implementation of the black boxes and the rest of the assistance devices will only be mandatory for new cars and light vans that are homologated after July 6. This means that it will not affect vehicles that are already on sale and undergo restyling from that date, since vehicle updates are not homologated. The EU regulations also establish that, from 2024, these black boxes and the rest of the aids must be compulsorily equipped in all new cars and light vans sold in Europe, even if they have been homologated before July 6, 2022. What data do these black boxes record? These devices will collect up to 15

The format was foursome’s blind pairs scoring Stableford points, as usual Bonalba course was in great condition from tee boxes to the greens, the weather forecast was a bit of a hit and miss day and the rain did eventually arrive at lunch time and stayed for around an hour, it was still a pleasant day with temperatures around 21 degrees.

Easter weekend, folks - not many left like it in the footballing calendar. Usually, it signifies a big moment in the title race - but with City and Liverpool playing each other (at Wembley, eugh) in the FA Cup semi final it is still as you were at the top. It sometimes marks a big development in the race for the top four, but with Tottenham bottling it a bit in the first nod to being Spursy for a while and Arsenal 100% bottling it losing their third in a row to a team that let in six in 60 minutes last time out it seems like United, somehow, still have a shot by default. And, it was nice of Burnley to free Sean Dyche up to take part in as many Easter Egg hunts as his heart desired - binning off the one manager in the Premier League who had totally earned the right to go down with a team and bring them back up again if he wanted to stick around. Mind you, this is a club that had a takeover that left them nearly £100m worse off, have failed to strengthen a squad that is in urgent need of reinforcements and chose to write off one of just eight remaining games as they didn’t have the firefighter lined up. The first FA Cup semi final saw Manchester City and Liverpool lock horns again amidst public transport chaos in the capital. Said chaos must have been chaotic as City failed to arrive until halftime - Liverpool racing into a 3-0 lead by the break. Zak Steffen started for City and Pep’s final words of encouragement must have been “relax, just do what Ederson does” as the young back-up took to the hallowed turf. Unfortunately for Peppy G, Steffen took him just a little bit too literally, allowing a simple pass back to become a state of emergency as he dallied, dallied again and then allowed Sadio Mane to slide in and block the ball into the back of the net for 2-0. Liverpool’s third was a goal that should also be remembered as an iconic FA Cup moment - lovely interplay between Diaz and Thiago leading to Thiago flipping the ball up for Mane in a casual, something you’d do in the warm-up, ‘go on lad, volley that one’ kind of way. Mane accepted the invitation and speared the ball home - and we must overlook the fact that Steffen got done on his near post so not to override the beauty of the goal. It is conceivable that City players were shocked and embarrassed by their fans singing through a single minute of silence in memory of the people who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989 - but they got back to it within a minute of the second half starting, scoring the classic ‘they really need to score next and score early’ goals which changed the momentum of the game. When Bernie Silva netted late, late on it was too little too late. Liverpool are still on for their Quad, no matter how improbable that actually is. Pep can now focus on not screwing up the Champions League and Premier League double - but will

be aware that is now four FA Cup semi losses out of five. The Sunday semi wasn’t the same kind, it has to be said - Chelsea, fallen European champions and nowhere near a title-race against a resurgent Crystal Palace, denied their best player because their opponents (understandably) said no. Conor Gallagher watched on, probably half an eye on Palace and his chances of an FA Cup Final and half an eye on where he might fit into Tommy T’s jigsaw puzzle next season. He’ll have probably noted that there must be a spot in the middle of the park if Tuchel was so keen to give Reece James a run out there - like last season, removing their best attacking threat from his best position on the Wembley turf. That said, Tactical Thomas got a bit lucky by needing to send on RLC - who scored the goal that finally broke the stubborn Palace resistance. Another academy graduate (hey, remember when that’s what Chelsea had to work with when they had a transfer ban?) Mason Mount killed the game off. Three FA Cup Finals in a row for Chelsea - will they lift a trophy to wave Roman off? The race for the Champions League positions continues to be more of a drunken stumble after a heavy night. Tottenham seem to be refusing to take advantage of Arsenal’s current inability to win matches - contriving to lose at home to Brighton in a style reminiscent of the Gunners the previous week. Trossard scored in injury time to keep Spurs level with Arsenal having played one game more - as Conte said, “there are games you are not going to win that you must not lose”. Arsenal, having found their way and got themselves into the top four fight, seem to have completely lost their way managing to lose 1-0 to Southampton - a team that were 6-0 down to Chelsea after an hour last time. In fairness to the Saints, they did seem to have a proper plan this time which was to let Arteta’s lot have the ball and do nothing with it.

All this utter incompetence opened the door for a Manchester United who must surely be trying to be this average as some kind of social experiment. The ‘is Ronaldo the problem or the solution-ometer’ took another swing at Old Trafford as he netted his 60th career hat-trick against, erm, bottom-placed Norwich City. United led 2-0 before the actual worst team in the league scored double the amount of goals they typically manage on a good day. Hilarity was in danger of ensuing before Ronaldo popped up with his third actual contribution of the day. Still, at least Harry Maguire finally endeared himself back to the United faithful - kicking Paul Pogba in the head whilst trying to clear the ball. United fans had enough to worry about with their protest and learning that Ronaldo earned £850K for scoring all three at OT - that’s a £750K bonus for getting to 20 completely unselfishly, and then and extra £100K for each scored goal after that. And you wonder why he wants to be on penalties, eh? On top of that, a cool

£1m if he finishes as the team’s top scorer. You’ve seen United play, he’s going to earn that extra mil. The logic behind bringing Roy Hodgson out of retirement was very, well, logical. In terms of managers capable of keeping a team in the Premier League, Hodgson was the obvious choice and made a lot of sense. However, having now lost 10 home matches in a row - a record - it’s fair to say that logic isn’t always the best road to follow. Sunday’s Premier League action saw Michael Jackson drop Lennon in Burnley - the musical connection so nearly working there. Burnley sacked Dyche hoping to get a good reaction from the players and even staying in the Premier League. Whether a 1-1 draw with a tired West Ham feels like progress, only Alan Pace will know. Up in Geordieland, they have another cult hero. Bruno Guimaires had to be patient when he signed but he has now scored a backheel volley, kicked one out of Kasper Schmeichel’s hands and scored a last minute winner. Legend status confirmed.
