waited for the main parade. tKo Radio, the events official radio station, was on hand to entertain the crowds playing top tunes from across the decades and many of the bars had local performers entertaining their customers. the international day event was organised Cabo Roig Business association and oC avanza, and

80 year old woman shot dead at her home in Elche two arrests were made in less than 24 hours after the murder of an 80 year old British woman at her home in elche. the woman’s body was discovered at her home on Wednesday evening. She lived alone in a rural villa, her husband having passed away several years ago. Police have arrested a man and a woman in elche and alicante as alleged perpetrators of the murder. Both were seen in the area by a plumber the victim had called for a repair. it is believed that the plumber saw the suspects leaving the victim’s home and called the police after he entered the property and realised what had taken place. For now, the motive for the crime has not been revealed but robbery is not ruled out. Police sources say the interior of the house was not disturbed and that detectives recovered the murder weapon, a 22mm calibre pistol. the murder took place in the torre azul urbanisation in the Maitino distric of elche where there are around 100 homes. Reports emerged days after the murder that in recent months, police had reinforced patrols in this area, and in other nearby areas, such as torrellano and Valverde, to respond to neighbourhood complaints about break ins. the woman’s body was discovered by the plumber just before six on Wednesday evening. Reports indicate that about two hours earlier, the victim, who had lived for more than 20 years in the villa where she was shot three times, had contacted the plumber for an emergency repair. the plumber knew the victim and therefore was able

to access the property before he made the horrifying discovery. details of how he came to find the body are not known but some reports indicate that he became concerned when the woman didn’t answer the door and requested help from neighbours. officers arrived to the scene and confirmed the discovery of the body of the 80-year-old woman, who had several bullet wounds which appeared to have been inflicted from close range. all indications suggested that when police arrived, she had been deceased for a very short time, so a surveillance service was set up around the perimeter. the judicial commission was dispatched to the victim’s home to examine the body before authorizing its transfer to the alicante institute of Legal Medicine, where an autopsy was performed. national Police took several statements from neighbours to find

out if anyone saw anything, but since Wednesday was such a rainy day, no one saw anything. it was only the plumber who seemed to have seen anything of significance. he spotted the couple leaving the villa with a mask and hats and they seemed strange to him. he saw that they were leaving in a car and the information he was able to provide to the national Police was vital to the investigation. the victim had a British passport but neighbours who knew her said that she was originally from Germany. She came to elche more than 20 years ago after her husband retired, who was British and had a recycling company in Britain until his retirement. this is not the first violent murder committed in elche so far this year, last February a teenager shot his parents and brother to death in the family home.

New lifeguard project for Torrevieja beaches a new project for lifeguard services on torreiveja beaches was approved this week. the new contract will see an extension of the usual lifeguard services in high season with lifeguards on local beaches from 10am until 8pm. the Local Government Board (JGL) this week approved the hiring project for the lifeguard service on the beaches of torrevieja. Councillor for Beaches, antonio Vidal, revealed that the new contract includes a series of improvements to the service and, therefore, for the safety of bathers. “the purpose of this government team is to offer residents, visitors and tourists not only the best image of our beaches, but also the peace of mind that they are on safe beaches with a corresponding rescue service”, said Vidal. Councillor Vidal explained that this year’s contract includes the expansion of the assisted bathing service with the creation of a new area on La Mata beach. Likewise, the service hours of

the rescue teams are increased, starting at 10:00 in the morning and ending at 8:00 in the evening in high season, an hour longer than last year’s service. For summer season, the service begins on June 1, 15 days earlier than usual, in addition to having 10 more days on weekends. Regarding the renovation of the lifeguard viewing posts, Vidal explained that the installation of 8 lifeguard posts and 5 advanced surveillance towers is included in the contract. “these infrastructures will help further improve the service we provide to bathers”, said the Councillor for Beaches. the contract is divided into two lots, with lot 1 referring to the lifeguard service itself, with an estimated value of €3,115,826.79 (plus Vat). Lot 2 includes the supply of lifeguard posts and watchtowers, with an estimated value of €335,000 (plus Vat) with a contract duration of 18 months, being the maximum delivery period.

More than 800 applications to join Local Police Corps of Torrevieja torrevieja’s Councillor for human Resources, Carmen Gómez Candel, reported that the town hall has received more than 800 applications to fill the 18 positions available to form part of the torrevieja Local Police Corps. Councillor Gómez explained that this is one more step of the government team to provide more Local Police troops for the town. For the first time, torrevieja City Council will have its own job bank after the completion of the selection process, making it possible to fill vacancies that may occur for reasons such as retirement, sick leave, or positions that are necessary to maintain a vital service for the safety of citizens. it is expected that during the month of May the selection tests will begin so that, as soon as possible, recruitment will begin, thus expanding the local police force.

Local men help Ukraine animal rescue

Pen Farthing, on the left, with Reg Hall

When local man Rob Robinson saw events unfolding in Ukraine, he decided he’d try to do something. “i was sitting on the sofa, watching the news and thought i’d try to do something to help,” he explained. Rob put a shout out on Facebook and ended up connecting with Reg hall and david Longworth. the three, along with another man by the name of Raul, undertook some hasty fundraising in the local area before embarking on a three day trip to Ukraine. Rob said, “edina’s bar in doña Pepa put a bucket on the bar and managed to raise €300 in about a week. We also had a €650 donation from Jackie Birch in albir – we stopped off at albir on the way to collect €1000 worth of medical equipment from Jackie too.” the men managed to raise around €4500 and departed the Costa Blanca with two fully packed vans belonging to Reg. “We had food, clothing, medical items and some boxes from the Ukranian association of torrevieja. it took us about two and a half or three days to get there. We slept in the vans and only stopped when we needed to.” the group travelled through Spain and France and on to Germany where they were stopped at a police checkpoint. “We had ‘Ukranian humanitarian aid’ plastered all over the vans,” explained Rob, “So i guess the German police wanted to make sure it was nothing suspect. they checked the contents and were happy enough so they sent us on our way.” From there via dresden they crossed into Poland and met up with nadia, a woman who is coordinating animal food donations for the Ukraine in Poland. they crossed the border at Przemysl and met their contact, John ‘the Fixer’ a British expat living in France who as coordinating donations via a warehouse right on the Polish side of the border. Just hours after arriving at the border, the group were transferred to vehicles belonging to John and were soon crossing into Ukraine to a town called Sokal, north of Lviv. the plan was to deliver food to an animal shelter. Rob explained, “there are thousands of animals in need. Many people brought their pets with them but many couldn’t. these dogs and cats are people’s pets and have ended up on the streets or in shelters. Some were left chained up in gardens in the confusion. one poor dog had its back legs blown off by an explosion.” on the way to Sokal, they were stopped at numerous checkpoints and ended up lost, winding up in a military barracks with guns pointed at them. Rob said, “We did four or five trips across the border to bring animal

food to shelters. one shelter hadn’t had food or water for 28 days and the outcome there was tragic, 305 dogs were lost. By a miracle, a female dog was pregnant there are ended up giving birth to a healthy litter of pups. our aim was to get the sick animals treated – there’s a team of vets from all over the world working for free to attend to the animals caught in the war zone. We even managed to get some animals out including two blind dogs which were rehomed to Romania. the rules then changed and we weren’t allowed to bring any animals out at all. one of the volunteers at Przemysl was with us and she managed to smuggle her own dog out under a blanket in the front of the van with us. the dog didn’t make a sound when the military were checking us – it’s as if she knew.” While there, the guys met up with Pen Farthing who is coordinating animal rescue on the ground. Rob hopes to go back this summer to do more and is appealing for donations for Pen Farthing’s charity, nowzad. “if anyone wants to donate, they can drop a donation into Carredent dental practice or call me directly on 685 58 89 71. all the monetary donations i’m forwarding to nowzad and then i can give a receipt from nowzad directly to the giver so they can see where the money has gone,” said Rob.

13 under investigation for ‘love’ scams

Guardia Civil are investigating 13 people under the framework of ‘operation Loverboy’. all of those under investigation are accused of scamming their victims and using the proceeds to buy crypto currency. the scammers even posed as famous hollywood actors, said investigators. a statement by Guardia Civil said that officers had “proceeded to investigate 13 people as alleged perpetrators of numerous love scams, carried out through the internet, all of them of nigerian origin and the majority residing in Spain, with connections in other countries such as italy, the United Kingdom and nigeria.” the operation began in June 2021, when one of the victims informed the Guardia Civil that she had been scammed online for months. the scammer had first gained the trust of the victim to later simulate situations of “risk and need”, tricking the victim into making bank transfers, in some cases for amounts greater than 34,000 euros. as the investigation unfolded, Civil Guard detected nine victims of Spanish nationality, residing in huelva, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, alicante, oviedo and the Basque Country. after contacting them, many of them were being scammed at that very time so officers were

able to encourage them to file a denuncia as soon as possible. t h r e e m o r e victims were also located outside Spanish ter r itor y, these being of Chinese, Polish and French nationality. the scammers are believed to have defrauded victims of more than 250,000 euros, investing much of the money obtained in the purchase of cryptocurrencies on different foreign platforms. this type of scam consists of the offender taking advantage of a psychological vulnerability that the victim usually presents, creating a false identity and nurturing a fake relationship. in some of the cases, they even posed as hollywood actors and actresses, pretending to be a love or sexual interest, which usually leads to a virtual relationship that can last for several months until they gain the trust of the victims. once a link is established between the two and the victim shows some confidence, he begins to ask for money, alleging that he cannot liquidate his own assets since he is in another

country, that it is for charity or to be able to release an inheritance of which he is the recipient. the deception usually continues making the victim believe that he is going to come to live in Spain. the scammers continue to demand money from the victim, with the alleged purpose of paying for plane tickets, sending luggage or valuables that, according to the criminal, are being held in customs if the amounts determined by the foreign authorities are not paid, thus introducing an element of urgency to the request. in this case many of the victims were left in a uncertain economic situation, even going so far as to apply for loans in order to obtain the money that they later sent to the scammers. these types of scams occur regularly, said Guardia Civil. on many occasions, the victims do not come forward to report the crime as they are embarrassed.

EU calls for ban on Russian oil

the european Commission’s president has called on the 27-nation bloc to ban oil imports from Russia and target the country’s biggest bank and major broadcasters in a sixth package of sanctions against Moscow for its war in Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen said it would ‘be a complete import ban on all Russian oil, seaborne and pipeline, crude and refined’. addressing the european Parliament in Strasbourg, she proposed that the eU’s member nations should phase out imports of crude oil within six months and refined products by the end of the year. ‘We will make sure that we phase out Russian oil in an orderly fashion, in a way that allows us and our partners to secure alternative supply routes and minimises the impact on global markets,’ von der Leyen added.

the proposals need to be unanimously approved to take effect and are likely to be the subject of fierce debate. Von der Leyen acknowledged that getting all 27 member countries – some of them landlocked and highly dependent on Russia for energy supplies – to agree on oil sanctions ‘will not be easy’. hungary and Slovakia have already said they won’t take part in any oil sanctions the eU gets about 25 percent of its oil from Russia, most of which goes toward gasoline and diesel for vehicles. Russia supplies about 14 percent of diesel, and a cut-off could send already high prices for truck and tractor fuel towering. if approved, the ban on oil imports will be the second package of eU sanctions targeting Russia’s lucrative energy industry over its war in Ukraine that President Vladimir

Putin started on 24th February. in addition to sanctions on various entities and individuals – including Putin himself and members of his family – the bloc previously approved an embargo on coal imports. Von der Leyen said that Putin’s intention is ‘to wipe out Ukraine from the map’, but predicted he will fail in his deadly enterprise. ‘on the contrary, Ukraine has risen in bravery and in unity,’ she said. ‘and it is his own country, Russia, that Putin is sinking.’ Von der Leyen also said that those alleged to be spreading disinformation about the war in Ukraine would be targeted. ‘We are banning three big Russian state-owned broadcasters from our airwaves. they will not be allowed to distribute their content anymore in the eU, in whatever shape or form be it on cable, via satellite, on the internet or via smartphone apps,’ she said.

Spain breaks 20 million workers barrier

Spain’s job market has had a bumper april and for the first time in history the country’s social security database had 20 million workers signed up. this is a target that former Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, had set for 2019.the target has finally been achieved four years late, after the Covid-19 pandemic destroyed almost a million jobs and in the midst of a war that is driving prices to record levels not seen for more than three decades. however, it seems the labour market is resisting this new crisis and has continued to create jobs at a very good pace. easter is usually a good time for employment, and this year has been no different. in april almost 185,000 new jobs were created in Spain and unemployment has been reduced by more than 86,000 people, helped because easter fell in this month which encouraged taking on more staff according to data published by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour. april will also go down in history as practically half of the new contracts signed will remain stable over time: a total of 698,646 permanent contracts have been registered, the

highest figure ever recorded. the effects of the new labour reform have been strongly felt in its first month of full application and permanent contracts have increased considerably. the improvement was registered in all sectors, in all autonomous regions, in all age groups and among both men and women. the total number of permanent workers has risen to 77 percent of all contributors, six points more than is usual in the month of april. there has also been a substantial reduction in very short-term contracts; in april of previous years, three out of four contracts signed had a duration of 1 to 7 days but last month they were just one in

four. according to official figures, 184,577 contributors have been added to the Social Security system, the third best figure for april and in line with the average of the years prior to the pandemic. this has allowed the tGSS to close the month with a record number of 20,019,080 affiliates and it even exceeded 20.1 million for three days in april. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed has been on the brink of falling below the threshold of three million, something that has not been achieved since november 2008, shortly after the real estate crisis hit the country.

Torrevieja budget amendment approved: €49 million to improvement projects in an extraordinary Plenary Session on thursday morning, torrevieja town hall approved a budget modification which will see almost 49 million euro invested in local improvement projects. the money comes from savings that the town hall had already had in the bank, but couldn’t access before Covid due to budgetary rules. Central government gave permission for local town halls to access their savings and the proposal for a budgetary amendment for a total amount of €48,792,056 was put before the town hall on thursday, and passed by majority vote. the budgetary amendment represents an economic injection that the town hall hopes will help reactivate the local economy, investing in improvement projects for the city of torrevieja without compromising the future expenses of the town hall. the government team is set to launch a broad programme of projects with an increase in social assistance to different sectors of society, as well as the creation and improvement of infrastructure to make torrevieja a more attractive city. Councillor for Finance, domingo Paredes, pointed

out that it is the obligation of the municipal government to strengthen the social fabric of the city, offering aid to those who have been disproportionately affected by the crisis, to the most vulnerable groups and to associations that work tirelessly, day after day, so that no one is left behind. “We are clearly and forcefully committed to the investments that will make our torrevieja a more attractive city for tourism, which we so badly need to recover, and as has already been shown, they are an important source of job creation,” Paredes stressed. the items to which the almost 49 million euros will be allocated cover various municipal areas. among the actions to be carried out is the remodelling of the Paseo de la Libertad with an investment of 8.9 million euro. in terms of infrastructure and services, an investment of 5.7 million euro has been earmarked for a municipal asphalting plan, improvement of pedestrian walkways and accessibility. Close to 500,000m2 of resurfacing, 100,000m2 of pavement improvements and around 170 accessibility actions will be undertaken in the areas of el Chaparral, La Siesta, San Luis, Carrefour, Jardín del Mar,

doña inés, Los Balcones, Los altos, Rocío del Mar, Cala dorada, the town center, torretas, torreblanca, c/orihuela-CV 905, aguas nuevas, torre del Moro, calas and La Mata. areas will be remodelled and new green spaces will be created with a budget of 5 million euro. the green area of Cabo Cervera, nueva torrevieja, La Mata and Los Balcones will see their parks and gardens improved. one of the lines of work of this government team is focusing on is the of the well-being of all torrevieja, which is why more than 3.5 million euro will be allocated to continue with the Menjar program at home, the telecare programme, help to pensioners, nGos and aid for food and basic necessities for people at risk of social exclusion. the construction of the centre for alzheimer’s and neurodegenerative diseases will see an investment of 2.4 million euros. Some of the funds will be used for employment promotion programs, with an allocation of 3.5 million euro, the promotion of youth and awards for academic excellence and the repair and maintenance of educational centres.

Tourist Awards for Orihuela Venues the regional secretary of tourism, Francesc Colomer, has presented the awards for the integral System of Spanish tourist Quality in destination (Sicted) to 19 establishments in the municipality of orihuela, which are now fully certified quality tourist venues. another 16 tourist services in the town have had their certificate renewed this year. the ceremony of recognition was held at the orihuela yacht Club and attended by the Mayor of the municipality, Carolina Gracia; the Councillor for tourism, María García; and the manager of the La Barraca de Campoamor Restaurant, enrique tárraga, winner of the ii national Sicted award in the category of improvement Plan for the most outstanding tourist service. the head of tourism thanked all the winners “for understanding that quality cannot be something abstract”, and added that “Sicted represents team victory better than any other program”. Francesc Colomer, said: “the tourist city is one that makes it possible for happiness to arrive in the lives of others, and that cannot be the result of an occurrence, but rather of a planned, measured and

recognised work”. For her part, the Mayor of orihuela added: “empowering and making everyone aware” of the potential of the destination and of everything it can offer its visitors.” She wanted to give a message of support to “cooperate with companies in the management of this destination”. “orihuela has important attractions, we are the history of the Mediterranean and we have companies that add value to us as a city and a municipality”. orihuela was one of the first destinations in the Valencian Community to distinguish its companies and this year it celebrates a 10 year milestone,

just like the Sicted project in the Valencian Community. Since then, the number of establishments certified with this orihuela quality seal has been increasing progressively, reaching 72 distinguished tourist services, among which are bars and cafes, shops, restaurants and museums and centres of tourist interest. those distinguished from orihuela represent 12.54 percent of the total for the province of alicante and 5.82 of the percentage for the Community. orihuela stands out for the planning, commitment and continuity that they show year after year towards the Sicted tourism quality program.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP What do you worry about most, inflation or growth? that’s the tricky question facing many central banks including the Boe at the moment. having raised UK interest rates by another 25bps yesterday lunchtime, the Boe then delivered the dovish commentary that we had all anticipated. in fact, that commentary was much more downbeat than we thought, with the Boe warning of a potential recession in the UK, as inflation likely gets pushed beyond 10%, driven ever higher by surging energy prices. on that, the impending european ban on Russian oil imports is helping to ensure that the spot price for oil remains anchored firmly above $100pbl. interestingly enough, there was more of a split amongst the Boe than you might have expected, with three members voting for a 50bps hike, and the six winning members opting for the 25bps move. the three in the 50bps camp must have had both eyes on the inflation outlook. it is that sudden, worrying outlook for growth that really caused a stir, however, with the increasing prospect of stagflation in the UK, being highlighted by the Boe. even if they didn’t say it quite like that. Maybe the Boe have been reading our updates. the pound took the news badly. GBP/USd slipped from over 1.2600 to under 1.2330 in the space of a few hours. that’s over 2%, which may not sound like much, but for a major currency pair in G10-land, any move beyond 2% in a day is quite a rarity. the pound suffered losses elsewhere, but to a lesser degree. GBP/eUR has now given up any short-term ambitions of sustaining a move above 1.2000. By the european close yesterday, the pair had slipped

back as low as 1.1700. Looking ahead, markets are still pricing in several more rate hikes by the Boe this year. either the market will need to re-think this expectation, or the Boe will feel that the UK economy is frothy enough to withstand the impact of these projected moves, and maintain hiking rates, to keep pace with market expectations. in the meantime, if economic data continues to soften, then the pound will likely remain a target. EURO the single currency has faced headwinds throughout the week, even if it was not driven by central bank moves and chatter about central bank moves, for once. the energy crisis is damaging growth prospects for the region, and given that europe is in the process of banning Russian oil imports, that is only likely to make matters worse. Much as in the UK, weaker euro-area data has been trending of late, with the latest German Factory orders missing estimates by some margin, and exports declining 3.3% through March. Softer PMis for Germany were only partially offset by stronger numbers in Spain, France and ireland. eUR/USd has taken its direction from the dollar side of the pair, however. having rallied in tandem with other currencies immediately after the Fed meeting on Wednesday, and breaking back over 1.0600 for the first time in a week, the pair slipped back to 1.0500 through yesterday. Given that we have to wait a week for the next key euro-area data (inflation), the single currency is likely to play second fiddle to the dollar again.

Richard Osman tipped to replace Anne Robinson on Countdown

Richard Osman has been tipped as the early favourite to replace Anne Robinson on Countdown after the host announced she was stepping down after just a year. TV star Richard, 51, recently quit his show Pointless after 13 years so would be free to take on new commitments. The rumour comes amid claims that the cast of Countdown are ‘relieved’ that Anne is leaving after reports on an on set feud with Rachel Riley - who Anne reportedly found ‘too noisy’ - and Susie Dent. After Richard, the next strongest odds for replacements go to comedian Susan Calman and Taskmaster star Alex Horne, both of whom have 4/1 odds. Writer Victoria Coren Mitchell is next with 9/2 odds, while 8 Out Of 10 Cats star Jon Richardson follows with 11/2

odds. Anne, 77, announced she was leaving Countdown after just one year - admitting she has ‘a lot going on’ and wants to enjoy family life. Susie put out a tweet to show her support for Anne, writing: ‘Some Countdown news. Wishing Anne all the very best in her new adventures with her grandchildren and beyond. And it seemed that Rachel placed her seal of approval on the words, as she retweeted the post from pal Susie. But while the TV stars put on a friendly display through social media, it comes after reports last year that Anne, who suffers from tinnitus, found Rachel ‘too loud’ and was ‘irritated by her habit of chatting on her mobile phone, and by her time-keeping’.

Spying claims put Spanish Tourist routes government on defensive for May Spain’s fragile coalition government has been left on the defensive over its announcement that the mobile phones of the prime minister and the defence minister were tapped using Pegasus spyware. Felix Bolanos, a cabinet minister, told a news conference that the phones of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defence Minister Margarita Robles were hacked last year using the spyware made by Israel’s NSO Group. The disclosure followed accusations from Catalonia’s regional government that Spain’s intelligence services used Pegasus to hack the mobile phone of dozens of separatist politicians. According to Canadian cybersecurity watchdog Citizen Lab, the phones of over 60 people linked to the Catalan separatist movement had been targets of spyware after a failed independence bid in 2017. The allegations have poisoned the central government’s relations with Catalan separatist party, ERC. Sanchez’s minority government relies on the ERC to pass legislation and remain in power until the next general election due at the end of 2023. The ERC and the conservative opposition have questioned the timing of the disclosure that Sanchez’s phone had been hacked. The government has “suddenly gone from being the alleged perpetrator to victim. It has no credibility,” said Gabriel Rufian, ERC’s bench leader in parliament. “There are a ton of unanswered questions. The explanations given were

pathetic,” he told a news conference, adding the affair could “put an end to the legislature”. – Bid to ‘earn sympathy’ – Esteban Gonzalez Pons, a senior official with the main opposition conservative Popular Party (PP), accused the government of “announcing a national security breach with a oneyear delay to earn sympathy” from the Catalans. During an interview with news radio Ser on Tuesday, Bolanos said the government was only informed of the phone hacking “this weekend”. Bolanos said on Monday the phone hacking was an “external attack”, adding the details of the incidents in May and June 2021 had been sent to Spain’s high court for investigation. Asked during the radio interview if Morocco was responsible, he said it was important “not to make assumptions”.

“We don’t know who it is,” he added. At the time of the hacking, Madrid and Rabat were engulfed in a diplomatic crisis sparked by Spain’s decision to host a Western Sahara independence leader for medical treatment. An investigation published last year by 17 media organisations accused Morocco of using Pegasus, which infiltrates mobile phones to extract data or activate a camera or microphone to spy on their owners. Rabat denies the allegations. NSO Group claims the software is only sold to government agencies to target criminals and terrorists, with the green light of Israeli authorities. The company has been criticised by global rights groups for violating users’ privacy around the world and it faces lawsuits from major tech firms such as Apple and Microsoft.

The Councillor for Tourism for Orihuela, María García, has presented the tourist routes scheduled for the month of May across the city. First of all, she wanted to thank the work of the former Councilor Mariola Rocamora: “I think she has done a good job and we hope to continue adding actions that lead us to put our city in a privileged place in the tourist scene in the Valencian Community.” The visitor figures so far this year show that more than 1,200 visitors have already enjoyed the routes. In the month of April there have been 267 people. Analysing the information, the Councillor explained that these tourists ‘come from different parts of Spain, such as the Canary Islands, Barcelona, Almería, Zaragoza, Ciudad Real, Valladolid, Madrid, and of course from the entire Valencian Community’. Maria Garcia said she was keen to advance the recovery in the coming months, of family routes and those in the districts, but above promote the tourist experience.

25

“We want to promote tourism that takes us by the hand so that we can try recipes, do workshops, courses, it is not only about sight-seeing, but also knowing and experiencing, and so we are bringing the reality of the destination closer to those who visit us,” she said. The Councillor said the tourist routes has been specifically designed ‘not just as a way of doing tourism, but a way of living the trip. So this summer we will enjoy sports tourism, gastronomic tourism with specific routes to try products and show where to buy them. The gastronomic experience is a big part of the tourist experience’, “We want to go one step further so that the visits to Orihuela are not only to discover our museums and monuments, but also to provide people with an experience that becomes part of their lives. We believe that it is the best way to also bring our products closer and unite the hotel industry and commerce with tourism.”

“Where Sunbeams Banished Shade” The sun shone bright on Mariupol Though the city was destroyed Beams from Heaven’s outpost Had the people overjoyed Here was a city damaged Bombed relentlessly and cruel Yet the signs for its revival Served to mock an evil fool Amidst the devastation Like a Phoenix from the flames The buildings were rebuilt The structures blessed with many names The fallen who were innocent Their city streets reborn Through strength and true encouragement Despite what war had torn A bright new home for people Who had thought their prayers unheard A city risen from the ground A leader not deterred With true and heartfelt sympathy The future firmly laid New miracles where faith prevailed Where sunbeams banished shade. Lemon or lime? We can do better!

Gone are the days when lemon or lime were the only choices when it came to garnishing your G&T. These days we are spoiled for choice when it comes to fancying up your gin. Here are a few of our favourites: 1. LAVENDER Not just used in granny’s perfume. In moderation, lavender is warm and wildly aromatic – the perfect choice if you like your gin and tonic on the floral side. Take it one step further with edible flowers for an aesthetically delightful touch. 2. ROSEMARY Powerful and robust, rosemary makes for a deliciously savoury G&T garnish. Thanks to the herb’s piney flavour profile, it also plays very well alongside the juniper present in the gin. Once you’ve mixed your drink, rub two sprigs of rosemary in your hands to release the oils, then add to the glass. 3. CINNAMON STICK The sweet spice of cinnamon is a potent flavour addition to your G&T, so be sure to use a gin that can hold its own. Don’t be tempted to use your cinnamon as stirrer – you don’t want it to go flat. Let it infuse and if you don’t to be overpowered, remove it after a few minutes. 4. PEPPERCORNS Peppercorns are regularly seen in along with Spanish brands of gin, bobbing happily among the ice cubes. Give your G&T a savoury kick with the addition of black peppercorns and pair them with strawberries

for a summery twist, or opt for the numbing heat of Sichuan peppercorns for a truly unusual gin and tonic garnish. 5. STAR ANISE Not only is star anise an incredibly versatile spice – it works well in both sweet and savoury contexts, and has a bit of a menthol kick to it – but it’s also one of the most eyecatching. Drop a few in your glass for a G&T that’s incredibly Instagrammable. 6. TOMATOES Trust us on this one – tomatoes and a couple of basil leaves (gently disturbed to release the aroma) – an incredibly fresh summery flavour for your gin and tonic. Perfect for summer BBQs or picnics. 7. LEMON THYME Swap the classic lemon twist for a few sprigs of lemon thyme – the end result should be equal parts lemony and herbaceous. 8. CHILLI When we want to turn up the heat, we reach for a fresh chilli garnish. Finish with a fresh lime wedge. 9. APPLE Looking for a G&T garnish that’s lightly sweet, delicate and floral? Apple should be your garnish of choice, arranged in a delicate fan. Be sure to spritz the apple with a bit of lemon juice to prevent it from browning. 10. LEMONGRASS Add a tropical touch to your G&T with a few lemongrass stalks, but first strip away the

tough exterior layers to reveal the tender and fragrant core. Complement with a handful of coriander for an extra dose of freshness. 11. PINK GRAPEFRUIT Thanks to its sweetness, acidity and hint of bitterness, grapefruit is the perfect partner to tonic. Taking the essential ingredients for a G&T, and adding a couple of delicious citrus juices. Go a step further by moistening the rim of your glass with a little pink grapefruit juice, then dip in a saucer of salt to create a salted rim. Garnish with a grapefruit twist. 12. STRAWBERRY Strawberry isn’t just a delicious gin garnish on its own – it also plays well with a number of other ingredients, from basil and pepper to elderflower and mint. Choose your own combination – there are no wrong answers. 13. BERRIES Juniper works. Even more juniper works even better. Alternatively, a handful of frozen berries works well for flavour and a cool touch. 14. RHUBARB Fruity and with a touch of tartness, rhubarb is a natural in a G&T. Take a vegetable peeler to your rhubarb stalk for beautiful crimson ribbons that you can swirl along the inside of your glass. 15. PEACHES Looking for another garnish that also doubles as an ice cube? Then add a few frozen peach wedges to your next G&T.

Presenting the Vivienne Westwood Eyewear collection exclusively designed for Specsavers Ópticas The Vivienne Westwood eyewear collection takes inspiration from key design notes from the British fashion house – centred around the Westwood orb logo. It is exclusively available at Specsavers Ópticas in Spain. Signature prints and graphics adorn optical and sun designs within the collection; bold red and electric blue Westwood tartan is emblazoned across wide statement acetate sun frames and features subtly across metal frame optical styles. The classic Vivienne Westwood graffiti, in a monochrome graphic print, delivers a handpainted DIY feel to the bold black optical frames, and Rococo inspired metal frames complete the collection. In line with the Vivienne Westwood ethos, the collection has been developed with consideration to its design, durability and sustainability. Each frame is partially made from Eastman Acetate Renew, which is a combination of recycled single-use plastic and bio-based materials that come from sustainably sourced wood pulp. For every one-million frames made with Acetate Renew, Eastman uses 50 tons of waste plastic as a raw material. This is plastic that is not currently recycled which means it is being diverted from landfill and the ocean. The collection packaging has also been designed with consideration to the environment; featuring a pale grey shell case, which envelopes the eyewear in recycled felt, and accompanied

by a tartan polish cloth in recycled nylon. Sam Craig, Director of frame development at Specsavers said: “We are delighted to announce the global launch of our latest designer eyewear brand, the iconic fashion house, Vivienne Westwood. Every millimetre of each frame exudes the Westwood style perfectly. Striking silhouettes, signature tartan prints, bold graffiti logos and golden orbs make up just some of the features we hope our customers will enjoy wearing.” Commenting on the collection, which launches this Spring, Christopher Di Pietro, Global Brand Director, Vivienne Westwood said:”The collection is classic and timeless. It can be worn by everyone, but it has a distinct look which was achieved by playing with the famous iconography of the house. The development of more sustainable materials for this range was as important as the designs themselves. There is still a lot more work to do in reducing the impact of our

collection on the environment and we look forward to working with Specsavers in the future to achieve this.” The Vivienne Westwood x Specsavers campaign features international models Freddie Finch and Maria Keidj, styled in the Vivienne Westwood Spring-Summer 2022 collection, and statement designs from the optical range. The Vivienne Westwood Eyewear collection is now available at the 6 Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca, in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store or see the range.

How to treat kidney stones Kidney stones often go unnoticed and are only noticed when they begin to move from the kidney and clog the urinary tract, generating what’s often referred to as renal colic. Kidney stones, also called urolithiasis or nephrolithiasis, is a disease caused by the presence of calculi or stones inside the kidneys or urinary tract (ureters or bladder). A stone or calculus can be as small as a grain of sand or even larger than a pearl. “Kidney stones are of multi factorial origin and are most usually associated with genetic abnormalities, infections and dietary factors that cause the stones to develop when mineral salts build up; salts that would normally dissolve in the urine,” explained Dr. Sven Petry, chief of urology at Quironsalud Torrevieja. The increase in solutes, the change in urinary pH and the decrease in crystallization inhibitors facilitate the process of stones forming. Eventually, stones will form when urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. Symptoms of a kidney stone Urinary stones often go unnoticed for a long time and are only noticed when they start to move from the kidney and into the ureters (tubes made of smooth muscle that propel urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder) where

the urinary tract becomes clogged, usually causing extremely intense spasmodic pain, called colic. “Imaging tests can easily show kidney stones in the urinary tract, such as ultrasound, simple radiology or computed tomography,” explained Dr. Araceli Amorós, urologist at Quirónsalud Alicante and Elche. What types of people are more likely to develop kidney stones? Any metabolic disorder such as hyperparathyroidism, hyperuricemia or autoimmune diseases such as Crohn’s can favour the production of kidney stones. However, it must be taken into account that a sedentary lifestyle, poor water intake, an unbalanced diet and increased body weight can also cause the production of kidney stones.

Is lithiasis a chronic disease or can it be treated? Most small kidney stones do not normally require invasive treatment. However, larger stones that cannot be expelled through the urinary tract (anything measuring upwards of 7 mm) do require interventional treatment. “The prevention of kidney stones requires a combination of lifestyle changes and medications,” recommend the specialists at Quirónsalud.

What treatments are performed for kidney stones? It should be noted that in stones less than 2 cm, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is used. The ESWL technique is performed on an outpatient basis with sedation and uses sound waves to create strong vibrations (shock waves) that break the stones into small pieces so they can be more easily passed out of the body in the urine. In endoscopy under anesthesia, on the other hand, a very thin tube with a light and camera (ureteroscope) is passed through the urethra, bladder, and ureter to the kidney. Once the stones are located, special tools (pneumatic hammer or laser) can break them into fragments that will then be eliminated by the body with the urine. To remove stones larger than 2cm, a procedure called “percutaneous nephrolithotomy” is used, which involves the surgical removal of a kidney stone using small telescopes, no thicker than a pen, inserted through a small incision which is made on the patient’s side. Request more information about the treatment of kidney stones at Quirónsalud Alicante or Torrevieja.

Meal delivery apps fuelling obesity says WHO The WHO’s European Regional Obesity Report 2022 has just been published and it makes for grim reading. The WHO says that no European country is on track to stop obesity from rising by 2025 with almost 60% of adults and a third of children in Europe either overweight or Obese. What’s more, the pandemic has made obesity levels even worse. The reports suggests restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods to children, reducing the cost of healthy alternatives and encouraging all age groups to exercise more. The WHO European Regional Obesity Report 2022 says rates of overweight and obesity have reached ‘epidemic’ levels, with only the Americas having a higher level of obese adults than Europe. The WHO estimates that obesity is causing 1.2 million deaths every year in Europe - 13% of all deaths - and at least 200,000 new cases of cancer annually. Carrying too much body fat increases the risk of many diseases, including 13 types of cancer, type-2 diabetes, heart problems and lung conditions. It is also the main cause of disability, the report says. The report claims that obesity is ‘a complex disease’ and much more than simply the combination of an unhealthy diet and a lack of physical activity. ‘Obesity knows no borders,’ said Dr Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, ‘The countries in our region are incredibly diverse but every one is challenged to some degree...We can change the trajectory of obesity in the region’ by developing strong health

systems, he said. Europe’s highly digitalised food environments affect what, when and how people eat and should be monitored more closely, the report says. Meal-delivery apps, for example, play a significant role in increasing consumption of high-fat and highsugar food and drinks. UK research suggests eating a takeaway meal means consuming 200 more calories per day, on average, than food prepared at home. Over the course of a week, this could mean a child eating the equivalent of an extra day’s worth of calories However the report, presented at the European Congress on Obesity, also suggests online food and meal delivery systems can be used in a positive way to improve diets, access to healthy food and wellbeing. Online gaming, which is hugely popular among children, has also been linked to poorer diet, unhealthy behaviour and more time sitting rather than being active. But again, the WHO says this technology could be harnessed to improve the physical and mental health of young people.

I haven’t seen my good friend since we all went into Lockdown. Now she is able to fly over and visit me, and we had planned a week away on the costas in a lovely hotel we’d been to many times. I’ve known her for years; we met at work and clicked straight away. She’s come over to me to Spain every year since, but of course the pandemic meant we haven’t seen each other for a while. So, when she said she was coming over, I booked our usual hotel and have been looking forward to the holiday ever since. Except, this week she messaged me to tell me that she’d bumped into an old work colleague of ours, who’d joined our department before I left. I was aware that they’d stayed in

touch after I’d gone. Then my friend said she’d invited her to join her on her trip to Spain. My friend asked if I would book another room for this woman. I was very upset because I was looking very much to spending time with my friend as we’ve always done, and she didn’t even ask me before she invited this interloper along. I don’t even know her that well, and I didn’t particularly gel with her when she joined out department. I haven’t responded to the message yet, and would appreciate advice. I think you need to strike while the iron is hot; tell your friend how you feel about three being a crowd, and that you don’t even know this woman very well. Initially suggest that she

make another arrangement to spend time with ‘her friend’, and that you and she stick to the original plan, and see what she says. Remember you don’t have to go along if she isn’t keen to cancel things with her friend, suggest that she go, and you and she will get together another time.

What Happens if I Have an Accident on an Electric Scooter Without Insurance Since their use began to become widespread in cities, the electric scooter has brought with it positive and negative perspectives. In other words, they are seen as ideal personal mobility vehicles for the urban structure and, therefore, they have required specific regulation by the DGT in the case of collisions by users. The DGT database reflects that 100% of incidents with scooters as protagonists occur on urban roads. They are not permitted on interurban roads or motorways. It must be emphasised that in 2021, there were a total of 8 deaths, 97 hospitalised injuries and 1,097 people with minor injuries in incidents, with these VPM as the main axis. Currently, approximately 120,000 people are temporary or regular users (rentals and owners) of the electric scooter, the Segway or other gadgets. Meanwhile, more than 40,000 citizens have one or more of these vehicles in their homes, according to data collected from the Association of Users of Personal Mobility Vehicles (AUVMP), which carried out the mobility survey last year. Although this is a topic open to discussion, which may well change in the future, it should be noted that the current non-obligation of having third-party liability insurance makes it difficult to resolve possible disputes. Likewise, in the case of driving with a VMP and running over a pedestrian, or causing an incident, it is most likely that the authorities will attend the scene to report what happened. Once the event has been written, it will be necessary to begin the procedures with the corresponding insurers. If you are the owner of one of these scooters, it is worth checking with your home insurance company, because some of these policies include coverage for damages to third parties in the case of bicycle or scooter accidents. If you are

not covered by your home insurance, and you, the scooter rider, are deemed to be responsible for the collision, it is you as an individual who must bear the costs of the damage caused, otherwise it is likely that this event will end up in court. There are now a number of insurance companies who will offer policies specifically for this type of vehicle. The prices vary according to various factors (depending on the user’s age and scooter model). A recent report put these policies as priced between 20 and 80 euro on average, which includes everything that insurance usually provides: civil liability and legal protection, roadside assistance, accidents to the driver, accidental damage, and theft of the vehicle. This is something definitely worth considering as it could save you a lot of money in the event of a collision. Equally important, the DGT points out that these vehicles are for individual use. VMPs and other electrically powered light vehicles are only authorised to transport one person. Therefore, having two occupants in a vehicle with these characteristics will be punishable by a fine of 100 euro, according to the

provisions of article 9.1.5.E of the General Traffic Regulations. In case an offence is committed by a person under 18 years of age, the parents, tutors, foster parents and legal or de facto guardians, will be jointly and severally liable for the offence committed by the minor. These scooters must travel at a speed of 6 to 25 km/h. They can circulate around the city, but not on pavements or pedestrian areas. They are not permitted on intercity roads, motorways, dual carriageways or in urban tunnels. The maximum speed at which these vehicles can travel is 25 km/h, a speed at which the motor will gradually stop the vehicle from moving. In addition, it will have wired circuits so that speed and power cannot be altered. Likewise, they must have a visible information indicator that shows the speed at which it travels and the battery level. If we drive at night, we are required to wear a reflective garment to warn other drivers on public roads. If this is not the case, it will be considered negligent driving and, therefore, punishable with a penalty of 200 euro, in accordance with article 3.1 of the Traffic Law.

No Parking on Bike Lanes The DGT made it quite clear on their social networks. “Just as the pavement is for pedestrians, the bike lane is for the cyclists. Do not use it for running, walking, or parking”. As far as the driver is concerned, parking is prohibited on bike lanes. The law will punish those who obstruct, totally or partially, the lanes destined for the movement on two wheels, which tend to invade both pedestrians and vehicles. Following an update to the law recently, parking in a bike lane is considered a serious offence and it is hoped that this new ruling can dissuade drivers from carrying out bad practices with cyclists, clearing up such an essential element on the road like bike lanes, on the rise in all European cities. The aim of the rule is so that cyclists do not encounter obstacles or risks to their safety when they circulate through them and that they do not have to leave the bike lane to be able to continue their movement. “Any vehicle” that parks in a bike lane “may be penalised with a fine of 200 euro.” This is what the regulations say, and you should always keep that in mind if you are tempted to invade a

bike lane. If we pay attention to the small print, in fact it is considered serious «parking in the bus lane, in bike lanes, on curves, elevation changes, parking areas for the exclusive use of people with disabilities, tunnels, underpasses, intersections or in any other dangerous place or in which traffic is seriously impeded or constitutes a risk, especially for pedestrians’. It doesn’t matter if you intend to

park the car to run a quick errand or if you intend to make a ‘pitstop’ for a few seconds. No more quick stops with any pretext and wherever you want. This is reflected in the law, which prohibits “stopping or parking” in bike lanes. Both actions carry a fine. Although all this may seem extremely

strict, the idea that the DGT has is to carry out a forceful sanction so that offenders do not leave their vehicle, even for a second, in a place of passage for cyclists. Now they will be more protected with the new law. We must also pay closer attention to cyclists when they are on the road. With the new RoadSafetyLaw, endangering or hindering a cyclist in an overtaking event will result in the loss of 6 points and a 200 euro fine. If there is more than one lane, you must move completely into the second lane to overtake a cyclist, allowing them the entire space of the first lane. The same rule applies for mopeds by the way. To overtake a cyclist when there is only one lane then you always have to keep a minimum distance of 1.5 metres between your vehicle and the cyclist when you pass. Cyclists also have obligations when on the road. They must favour being overtaken at all times to avoid hindering traffic on the road. If they are in a group, the maximum they can circulate is two by two side by side and as close as possible to the hard shoulder of the road and must not hinder the flow of traffic. If traffic needs to pass, they must circulate in single file.

SPRINg RECIPES

Pineapple & pork skewers

Ingredients 400g pork fillet 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar 60ml cider vinegar 1 tsp fish sauce ½ small pineapple , peeled, cored and cut into chunks (or use ready prepped fresh pineapple, drained well) 1 green pepper , deseeded and cut into squares (optional) 4 spring onions , trimmed and cut into 4 equal lengths Small bunch coriander , chopped (optional) Cooked rice or pitta, to serve

Method STEP 1 Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce. STEP 2 Heat the barbecue. If you are using coals, wait until they turn white. If you are indoors, heat a griddle pan. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and spring onion. STEP 3 Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Sprinkle with coriander, if you like, then serve with rice or slide into pitta breads.

Next level BBQ chicken

Ingredients 2 red chillies , tops removed and reserved for the smoke mix (see below) 8 spring onions , roughly chopped Thumb-sized piece of ginger , peeled and roughly chopped 8 garlic cloves , roughly chopped 2 tbsp chopped thyme 1 bay leaf 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp paprika 3 tbsp dark brown soft sugar 4 tbsp soy sauce 4 limes , 2 juiced, plus 2 halved to serve 1.5kg mix of chicken drumsticks and

wings, lightly scored 200ml ketchup For the smoke mix (optional) Handful of thyme sprigs Handful of bay leaves 1 tsp ground allspice Reserved chilli tops (see above) Method STEP 1 To prepare the meat, tip all the ingredients, except for the chicken and ketchup, into a blender or mini processor. Add a pinch of salt and blitz to a rough paste. Tip two-thirds of the paste into a large bowl with the chicken, and massage the marinade into the meat. Cover and leave for at least 1 hr at room temperature, or up to 48 hrs in the fridge.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, make the barbecue sauce. Tip the remaining paste into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 mins until it thickens and becomes darker, then add the ketchup and cook for 5 mins until sticky. Tip into a container and set aside. STEP 3 Light the barbecue, ensuring the coals are piled up at one end and leaving only a couple of coals on the other side. Lay the chicken on the emptier side. If you’re making the smoke mix, carefully scatter all of the ingredients directly onto the piled-up coals. Cover the barbecue (with the vents open) and cook the chicken for 20 mins. Remove the lid and turn the chicken, then cover

again and cook for a further 20 mins. STEP 4 Remove the lid and move the chicken across the grill so it’s above the piledup coals, then baste with some of the barbecue sauce, keeping enough aside, in a separate container, to serve later. Cook for 10 mins, adding a few more coals if you need to and turning often, until nicely charred and cooked through – a digital thermometer inserted through the thickest part of the meat should read at least 65C. STEP 5 Put the lime halves on the grill, over the coals, cut-side down for 3-4 mins until charred. Serve the chicken with the lime for squeezing over and reserved barbecue sauce for dipping.

Kitten season is again upon us, confirmed by the Pets in Spain animal charity, already overloaded with kittens saved from life threatening situations. Eight In just one week. Six where born to a mum that was injured and could not feed her kittens, and the two in this photo where found abandoned in the under build of a house at age just two weeks. They where starving and infested with fleas. A visit to the vet clinic revealed a rare occurrence, with maggots in one eye. Immediate treatment and steroid drops was necessary to eradicate all the maggots and hopefully the eye will recover. All 8 kittens are now thriving on bottle

fed kitten milk by the charity’s foster carers. The pandemic has hit animal charities hard with outdoor fund raising events having to be be cancelled and long term low customer trade in charity shops. As a consequence, due to lack of funds, Pets In Spain will close their charity shop in Ave Londres, Urb La Marina on 31st May 2022 and appeal to everyone to please continue to support them and deliver donated items to sell in their other charity shop which will remain open on the lower level of Consum square, Urb La Marina. In a week where Liverpool reached another Champions League Final and Manchester City did not, the Premier League took the opposite swing as Liverpool left points on the Anfield pitch and City swept past Newcastle. If the title race was last weekend’s World Snooker Final, Liverpool definitely need snookers as with three games to go they trail the champions by three points. But, we know Peppy G is capable of winning the Premier League. It’s his lack of Champions League titles given, you know, how much money he gets to spend on players, that will be his legacy especially if King Klopp leads the Reds to glory in Paris at the end of the month. However, we’re not here to mock Man City - well, not exclusively anyway. Even if the cunning plan the club seem to be working on is signing Paul Pogba on a free. Taking Tottenham to Anfield and potentially spoiling a good week is the kind of challenge that Antonio Conte relishes. Liverpool had won 12 on the spin at their place but it proved to be unlucky 13 - although ‘unlucky’ could be downgraded slightly after Luis Diaz’s equaliser took a hell of a deflection off Rodrigo Bentancur. Spurs silenced the Kop by scoring a very Liverpool type of goal. The falsey false 9 dropped team, played in an attacking left-back who crossed for a wide player to tap in from close range. Kane, Sessegnon and Son could have easily been Firmino, Robertson and Salah - except Bobby Firmino doesn’t really play that much now, does he? Klopp was keen to remind everyone that the result was “not a funeral” which was a fair point, but the result at the Etihad must have felt like the music of the march was beginning. Liverpool fans are still nervous that Salah and Sadio Mane’s contracts are coming to an end - but if Diaz keeps repeating the last seven days, they’ll be able to move on easily enough. The fans, I mean. Mind you, the players

won’t be short of mega offers either. At the Etihad, City chalked off what needed to be chalked off - it’s hard to imagine there was much of a Champions League hangover given how used they are to screwing up European glory. Would it have been different if Chris Wood had put Newcastle ahead? No, absolutely not. City would have still battered them and created a three point gap with three to go. It really should be Chelsea (third) or Arsenal (fourth) that get a mention next but that would be a complete oversight given the match down at the Amex. Brighton, not known for scoring more than once in a game - twice on a good day - embarrassed Manchester United 4-0. Given their absolute lack of interest in winning football matches, it makes sense that players and coaches have opted for an in-house competition of who can state the most bleedingly obvious thing post-match. Bruno Fernandes opened this round with a simple “today was not good enough” before quickly being trumped by his current boss, Ralf Rangnick raising the stakes with “it was a humiliating defeat”. Yes, Ralf. It really was. Do you fancy hopping off to that Austria gig a bit sooner? United are guaranteed their lowest points tally in the Premier League ever - and it feels like that ever needs extra emphasis - and will have conceded the most goals in a league season since the Greatest Show on Earth got underway. How much would it cost to pay everyone at the club off and start again? Probably better value for money than what was given to Cristiano to rock up or what’s been paid to Manchester City-bound Pogba over the last few years. As for Brighton and Graham Potter - maybe he’s the guy United should have gone for. What you really, really don’t need in a relegation battle is your goalkeeper gifting one to the stronger side after a few minutes. To be fair, Ilan Meslier does have a mistake or two in his locker and he pulled one out early against Arsenal. Eddie Nketiah was the beneficiary and showed off one of those non-celebrations that certainly fit into the “should be for club legends

only” bracket - a few games and goals on loan a few seasons ago doesn’t warrant that level of respect, if there is any respect left in not rubbing their noses in the fact you scored against them. Maybe Luke Ayling was thinking that as captain, he could help his keeper not feel like the impending loss was all his fault? The tackle he put in was, shall we say, old school enough to have Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter doing the opposite of turning in their graves which doesn’t really work as I was more going for a sitting up and applauding in their graves kind of vibe. Leeds have set a record this season, and congratulations to them. Their 95 yellow cards this season is a Premier League record beating Sunderland in 2014/15. Sunderland didn’t go down which cannot be guaranteed for Leeds. As for the Gunners, they can seal Champions League qualification on Thursday at Tottenham’s new(ish) shiny stadium built because they expected to be Champions League regulars. The relegation battle took a bit of a twist as well. It feels all kind of wrong that Roy Hodgson got relegated at Selhurst Park having spent so many seasons keeping Crystal Palace in the top flight, but Wilf Zaha’s penalty condemned Watford to Championship football next season. Michael Jackson’s attempt to heal the Burnley world came to an abrupt end against Aston Villa. Burnley were bad - quite like Villa tend to be on the weeks they are not pretty decent. It will be interesting to see which version to Stevie G’s side becomes the norm next season - the one flirting with the top ten and above or the one that could be next season’s Everton. The defeat and the Sunday result at the King Power mean that Burnley are right back in the mire - and there’s a small matter for a £65m loan that will need to be repaid well ahead of schedule if they do go down. Everton were the big winners this weekend - Leicester, clearly keen not to have to go through the pain of another European Conference League semi-final defeat next season, were willing to let the Toffees score two on the understanding that they would try and score a couple themselves. Mason Holgate and the Ukrainian

lad whose name I am not even going to try and spell correctly were the heroes - much needed when their strikers still can’t hit a barn door. Remember Dele Alli? Yep, he didn’t get off the bench again. Brentford can easily lay claim to being the surprise package of this season - and Christian Eriksen (considering he nearly died last summer) could definitely be considered the surprise player of the season. They saw off Southampton (utterly hopeless and clearly on the beach) 3-0 and are hoping they could finish top 10 with a good wind. Chelsea were hoping to put on a good show for their prospective new owner Todd Boehly, who was watching from the stands. His presence wasn’t lost on Romelu Lukaku who scored his first two league goals for what feels like an eternity. Cesar Azpilicueta and Tony Rudiger were clearly starting to think of paycheques elsewhere as they let Wolves back in - Conor Coady scoring a goal as rare as one from Lukaku in the 97th minute to steal a point. West Ham got over the disappointment of their European exit and showed they were not put off by the experience - they fancy another go at something continental next season. Let’s just be grateful that David Moyes’ efforts at smacking a stray ball into a time-wasting ballboy in Frankfurt was more West Ham Sebastian Haller than Ajax Sebastian Haller. The Hammers stuck four past Norwich City who are looking forward to their annual job swap with Fulham next season. Got time for some transfer chat? Excellent. Arsenal want to bolster their squad for the Champions League next season by signing a midfielder who managed to bottle finishing in the top four two seasons in a row on the last day of the season. Mikel Arteta wants to spend £40m on Leicester’s Youri Tielemens. There’s one good reason why Pogba might fancy a move to City rather than heading back to Turin and Juventus. Rumour has it, that’s where Nemanja Matic is moving for his retirement fund. Pogba doesn’t move much at the best of times, so being asked to do Matic’s running for another two seasons is probably a deal breaker.

grey colour. This did in fact improve the fishing and the best weights for some considerable time were recorded. The match was once again won by Bill Reade, drawn on peg 22 he fished across to his left on bread or corn to catch numerous carp for a fantastic 55.90kg. In second place was the everconsistent Neil McBernie. Drawn on Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 3rd of May we fished the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente. Heavy rain was forecast but this never arrived and the match was fished in lovely sunny warm conditions with a light breeze. Everyone has a theory and opinion on what are the best and worst pegs on this complex and to stop any arguments regarding pegging the committee developed a pegging plan which automatically decides which pegs are fished depending Soley on the numbers taking part. One angler in particular who shall remain nameless, suggested that peg 18 was unfit to fish due to its snaggy nature and that

it should not be included. He was told by several anglers that it was a good peg but after paying his entrance fee he was adamant that he would not fish it if he drew that peg. Peg 18 was in fact draw by the old master himself Bill Reade, Bill caught a few fish on the feeder initially but then reverted to his tried and tested method of bread flake on the pole fished about 3 inches deep. He caught carp on a regular basis to win the match easily with 18.58kg. In second place was Nick Bastock. Drawn on peg 5 he caught carp across on maggot using the pole for 16.70kg. In third place was Alan priest on peg 7. Alan fished a bit of everything mainly

on maggot for 13.72kg. Other section winners were Paul Burton 10.54kg. Alan Davies 12.50kg and Neil Bomford with 12.50kg. The pairs event was won by Bill and Neil Bomford with 31.09kg. Rods N Reels The following day eight hardy souls turned out to the same venue. The heavy rain that had been forecast the previously day turned up and the match was fished in torrential rain with anglers describing it as the worst conditions they had ever fished in whilst in Spain. The rain was running along the gravel banks and tipping into the water and making the swims a dirty

peg 3 he fished maggot or pellet on the pole for 29.92kg. In third place making a welcome return to our shores was the Welsh wizard, Dougie Hornblow. Drawn on peg 7 he used similar tactic for a hard fought 29.50kg. Further details can be found on our website at www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown
