Newborn baby found abandoned but alive in San Isidro

a newborn baby was found abandoned in san isidro, very shortly after it was born. Guardia Civil found the baby, still with the umbilical cord attached, hidden in blankets among the ruins of an old house. it appeared

that the baby had been abandoned by its mother very soon after the woman gave birth, said officers. a quick thinking delivery driver is the man who probably saved the baby’s life, having spotted a woman

with bloodstained legs carrying a bundle of blankets in her arms. the man and his colleague both phoned the Guardia Civil and officers made their way to san isidro, a small village near Catral. Both of the men had seen the woman with blood on her legs, and were concerned that something had happened to her. after speaking to her, one of the men was convinced that among the blankets, he had spotted the tiny limb of what appeared to be a baby. a patrol car from nearby almoradí sped to the scene and began to search a vacant lot next to an industrial estate in the town. nearby, officers found the woman, who they say categorically denied the events described by the witnesses, and who refused to be

treated by the paramedics who had been sent to the scene alongside the officers. despite the woman’s claims, officers found several inconsistencies in her statement, and they insisted she accompany them to the ruined house where she admitted she had been sleeping. after combing the area, about a hundred metres from the semi-ruined house, officers found some rolled-up blankets on the ground behind some plastic drums. unrolling the bundle, the officers found the newborn baby, who still had the umbilical cord attached. Finding the baby wrapped in blankets in the full afternoon sun at 3pm, officers first thought that the little one had tragically died, but he reacted when officers gently pressed

his chest to see if he was conscious. although the baby had symptoms of dehydration, he was breathing normally and appeared to be doing well. the ambulance immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital, where he was admitted to the neonatal unit. the perseverance of the witness and the Guardia Civil officers saved the life of the newborn, whom the Continued on page 3

Passenger tried to board plane in Alicante with 46 live turtles and crabs in hand luggage Guardia Civil are investigating a man who was caught trying to smuggle 46 animals out of the country in his hand luggage. the man was apprehended with 46 live turtle and crab specimens. airport security found the animals wrapped in plastic so that they would not move but experts believe that this would have caused them to suffocate after a short period of time. the man was caught earlier this month when airport security noticed suspicious contents in his suitcase using the x-ray scanner. the passenger was about to board a flight to denmark when security personnel alerted the Guardia Civil who performed a search of the man’s handluggage. When officers asked him to open the suitcase they found that it was full of live turtles and crabs, some wrapped in transparent plastic wrap and others in boxes, or even sealed in plastic so they could not move. Given the possibility that these were protected species, airport officers requested the collaboration of the nature Protection service (seprona) of alicante, for the proper identification of the specimens. seprona officers confirmed that there were forty-six live

specimens of the following species: a red-eared slider (trachemys scripta elegans); two yellow-eared slider sliders (trachemys scripta scripta); six leprous pond turtles (Mauremys leprosa) and thirty-seven american crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). the pond turtles in particular are listed as specially protected as they are endangered. the tax and Border analysis and investigation unit (udaiFi) of the tax section of the alicante airport Guardia Civil

has opened an investigation into the 64-year-old man, who is charged with the crime of illegal trafficking of protected species and another of animal abuse. anyone found guilty of animal abuse could face a maximum prison sentence of anywhere from three months up to one year in addition to disqualification from carrying out any profession related to animals. For the crime of illegal trafficking of endangered species, the man could face a prison sentence of up to two years. the file has been made available to the investigating Court of elche. the rescued animals have been transferred to the santa Faz Wildlife Recovery Centre.

hospital nurses christened noa. at the moment the baby remains in hospital, although his general state of health is said to be good. the mother - 39 years old and of swiss nationality – was arrested and has been handed over to the orihuela Court. she is charged with a crime of child abandonment. the witness, José enrique Perea had been on his way to start his shift at a freight transport company. Just an hour before officers made the miraculous discovery, he had been on his way to Granadina industrial estate when he passed a woman “who has been wandering around this area for some years, leaning on a lamppost, with traces of blood” earlier, Luis María Rocamora, José enrique’s childhood friend and coworker, offered the woman water and some money. Luis told police that ‘it felt wrong’, he thought perhaps that the woman had been raped and called José enrique, who was on his way, in case he needed help. Perea arrived and gave the woman

some water and the food that he had brought to work for his lunch. Meanwhile, he was sure he saw the sole of a foot among a rolled-up blanket that the woman was holding. he thought the toes could have been from a doll, or a baby. he saw stains on the pavement and immediately deduced that the woman must have given birth. he walked away and called 112 while Rocamora did the same. When officers arrived, they found the woman who denied that she had

given birth or that there was a baby at all. officers spoke to José enrique again who insisted – if there is no baby, then it must be a doll, but there is something – ‘you must look’. “the perseverance of the witness made it possible to save the little boy’s life,” reported the Guardia Civil in their subsequent statement, because thanks to his insistence that he was sure of what he saw, officers continued to search the area until they found the newborn.

Torrevieja to round up stray chickens over the next few days, a contract for the collection of domestic birds from urban areas of torrevieja will begin. the aim is to control the free roaming domestic bird population at several parks and areas of the town, in order to lessen the impact of the birds due to their growing populations. the department of animal Protection, directed by Councillor Concha sala, awarded the contract, worth €8470, after receiving three quotes for the work. the contract includes the collection of 500 domestic poultry with subsequent monitoring of each area for recaptures. it is expected that the round up will take place at ten specific points around torrevieja, beginning at the park beside the skate park and at the Park of the nations, as well as

in adjacent areas. the town hall said that “due to the accumulation of these birds, it has already been proven that coexistence with neighbours and users of these spaces is not compatible.” the birds have become a nuisance to residents and a danger on public roads in recent years. the town hall said, “there have been many neighbourhood complaints in this regard, as well as notices to the Local Police regarding the danger of road traffic.” at the express request of the town hall, the company that won the contract for the round up will guarantee a zero sacrifice policy and will proceed to deliver the birds to farms, schools and animal sanctuaries. it is expected that the works will last for a year or at least until december.

Stevie at Buckingham Palace the sun was shining brightly over Buckingham Palace as the front gates opened to stevie spit, who after two cancellations and a two and a half year wait finally got to attend Royal Garden Party and be presented to Prince William. accompanied by eileen Gleave, aka nanny, stevie enjoyed cucumber sandwiches and high tea while the yeoman of the Guard paraded out of the Palace and skilfully parted the visiting crowd ready for the appearance of the members of the Royal family in attendance that day. the atmosphere was filled with excitement as no one was told in advance who would be there. stevie said, “as the band played the national anthem, out popped Prince William and Katherine, the duke and duchess of Cambridge. Quickly followed by Prince edward and sophie the earle and Countess of Wessex accompanied by Princess Beatrice.” stevie and Price William chatted for about ten minutes about his B.e.M. award, stevie telling the prince how the Costa Blanca People had been instrumental in putting him forward for the well deserved accolade. they also chatted about stevie’s various trips to afghanistan, during which time stevie introduced nanny. the Prince asked what she did to which she replied “i worked with the Police for 31 years but i’m retired now. i just sell raffle tickets to help different charities. she the asked the Prince if he’d like to buy one and produced a strip of peach raffle tickets. he declined, saying he didn’t carry any money and his wife was busy working the crowd.

“it was the most amazing day,” concluded stevie. as he was leaving the palace, stevie recorded an interview for CBs news to be aired on the day of

the Jubilee. the fun didn’t end there as stevie and eileen were invited to pose for pictures by aston Martin for their social media pages.

Vega Baja Garden Club Vega Baja Garden Club had a very successful May meeting, which started with an interesting talk by club secretary irene, on lavender plants. you would not believe how many different varieties there are and how versatile they can be. english lavender has culinary uses – i tasted some lovely lavender cakes on a visit to Jersey many years ago. also lavender in general can be prepared for use as a topical treatment for insect bites, and if grown near the house it is an excellent deterrent for mosquitoes – they hate it. irene also brought three different lavender plants for the plant raffle. Following irene’s talk was the rose competition, with categories for most fragrant rose, best floribunda rose and best individual rose. irene won all categories. it was a lovely afternoon, and a great excuse for a chat and a coffee or a glass of something with friends, with the usual plant raffle to finish off. the next meeting will be on Monday 6th June 2022 at Bar trasgu, Formentera del segura at 2pm, for 2.30pm start, to give people time to get drinks from the bar. a small charge of €2 per person applies for the use of the room. the first half of the meeting will be our aGM, and be followed by a talk by our club secretary, irene, who has been researching plants that have

Irene, winner

mosquito-repellent properties, and there may well be some of these in the plant raffle. July will be our annual garden party, hosted by irene and alan. Members’ spouses and friends also welcome, but booking is essential and 5 euro deposit per person is required. For full details, e-mail address below. there is no meeting in august. if there is anyone out there who would like to give a talk of around 30 minutes on anything garden-related. a

laptop computer and projection equipment are available, and you would need to provide a memory stick with your pictures. you don’t have to be a professional, just a person with an interest in any or all things garden, who might like to tell us about your experiences with your garden, terrace or patio. Orihuela bars lose terrace privileges Bars, restaurants and hotels in orihuela and orihuela Costa are to have pandemic terrace space privileges revoked and will no longer be able to place charis and tables on public roads. town Councillors have explained that during the pandemic they relaxed the rules, allowing establishments to spread out on to roads to compensate for the capacity

limitations. however, with the lifting of the Covid restrictions and the return to normality, this revised law has ended. Police have been working at street level for several weeks to slowly but surely ensure that the hospitality industry is only using the space that it is licenced for and that conforms with the local laws. Jose aix, Councillor for

town Planning said: “it is no longer necessary for bars and restaurants to continue to occupy the public highway with their terraces.” he added that by reverting back to pre-covid terraces the government is addressing the needs of local residents who ‘need the additional parking spaces and we are respecting their desire for peace and quiet’.

Jean Paul Mulero from the town hall chaired the meeting saying “often, we at the town hall are so involved in the day-to-day administrative processes that we miss things so we want to hear from people. We want to hear suggestions and above all, we want to hear criticisms – what are we doing wrong and what could we do better?” Jean Paul went on to say

Flood defence works progressing well the Mayor and a team of experts including managers of water company agamed visited the flood defence works in progress in torreta ii. the works are being carried out on land opposite urb. torrealmemdros, next to the ‘via verde’ pathway. it is hoped that the works will serve to reduce flooding that occurs in torreta Florida and torreta ii when it rains heavily. Lack of drainage in the area means that any time there is heavy rain, severe flooding takes place which causes problems for local residents. the new works, described as a ‘flood park’ are going well with projections estimating that phases i and ii of the project could be completed before september when the next heavy rains are expected. all that will be left to install by september would be the storm tank. For the works to be carried out, the Board of directors of aGaMed last year approved an investment of 2,447,851 euro. the first phase includes the construction of rainwater collectors on Calle Jorge Manrique, which collect flood waters and redirect it to a pool, with a capacity of up to 13,000 cubic metres. these collectors will allow the creation of a separate network, in such a way that the sewage network

is not responsible for collecting rainwater and the infrastructure doesn’t become overloaded. the pool will store water for a time before it is sent gradually to the treatment plant, so that all the flood waters captured can be purified and reused. the second action is the creation of a pumping station for the collection of rainwater at the Calle Clarín roundabout. this pumping station will be capable of transporting rainwater away from flooding blackspots. to get water to the pumping station, it is necessary to build a network of collectors and outlets located along Calle Clarín. the overall aim is to control the water that, durig episodes of torrential rain, ends up flooding

the streets in and around torreta Florida urbanization. the project is planned in such a way that the new infrastructures are capable of collecting the water and storing it for later purification. Finally, a 5,000 m3 storm tank will be built in the area between the Vía Verde and avenida de las urracas, to collect rainwater. the stored water will remain in the tank until rains subside before later being sent for purification and reuse. Mayor eduardo dolón remarked that with these important works he fulfills the commitment of the Government team to the residents of these areas of torrevieja that suffer the consequences of flooding in times of torrential rains.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the pound has had a steady week thus far, with GBP/usd marking slight gains along the way. as we go to press, we are now within earshot of the cycle top at 1.2640, which if broken, would represent a new one-month top for cable. Given the gains marked elsewhere for currencies against the dollar, you can’t help but wonder whether the pound would have fared much better if economic data had been more forgiving, combined with a somewhat less bumpy political ‘partygate’ landscape. on the data front, the latest services PMi was the one that caught the eye for all the wrong reasons. a nasty drop to 51.8 from 58.9, when markets had been expecting around 57.3, edges the survey towards potential contracting territory (if we move under 50.0). Manufacturing was a smidgeon better, ‘only’ slipping to 54.6 from 55.8. that drop in the composite PMi points toward faltering demand, and highlights the squeeze on real household incomes, endorsing the growing projection that the uK will now fall into recession before the end of this year. up until this release, the PMi readings had been holding up fairly well. the government responded yesterday with another mini-budget, unveiling a much-disputed windfall tax on energy companies, as they try to address the massive increase to the cost-of-living. the £15bn package is designed to assist the uK consumer, given that there will be another big increase in energy bills come this autumn. the 25% ‘energy profit levy’ on oil and gas companies will also include a mechanism to incentivise investment. the levy should raise around £5bn of the total package, and will be phased out as prices normalise. Quite what normal is, we will have to wait and see. Moreover, quite what the energy companies decide to do with regard to future investments in the uK and such, is another matter. Back to our beloved pound, and GBP/euR remains trapped within a broad 1.1600 – 1.1900 range, with the pair encircling the centre spot

of that range at present. Much like GBP/usd, perhaps one reason for the pound maintaining its composure is that the Bank of england seem determined to continue with their current programme of rate hikes, despite a weaker outlook, as they attempt to tackle that bulging 9% uK inflation level. EURO ‘We will not be hiking rates in 2022’. Christine Lagarde’s comment at the end of last year reminds us of when Michael Fish said that there would not be a hurricane in the uK, the evening before the 1987 Great storm caused £1.5 bn of damage, and took out six of the famous seven oaks. in fairness to Madame Lagarde, inflation was only going to be transitory back in november (sorry Jerome), and with euro-area countries now regularly occupying some of the top spots in the league of highest inflation for developed countries, the eCB needed a rethink. however, that rethink has morphed over the past few weeks, with several eCB members now blatantly calling for a 50bps rate hike at the eCB meeting in July. eCB member, Robert holzmann joined ranks with Klass Knot (he of last week 50 bps fame) to open the door to such a possibility. We are monitoring this particular development closely, as if this trickle turns into a flood of eCB members, then the chances of a big hike will get priced into market expectations. data has been giving a helping hand of late, with a stronger German iFo survey and GdP. the latest PMi readings had something for everyone, but even where there was weakness, the declines were palatable. Looking ahead, next week is all about inflation again, and further increases are pencilled in, which could add weight to the 50bps camp. in the meantime, the single currency has been marking consistent gains against the greenback, with euR/usd moving as high as 1.0765 this week. that may not sound like much, but that has put us at a one-month top.

“How do I watch UK TV while in Spain there are various options available?” the options are: 1. satellite dish 2. smart tV 3. iPtV - internet Protocol television (iPtV) 1. satellite dish - dependent on where you are you will need a satellite dish of 1.20 to 2.4 metres in diameter. Check with neighbours to see what size dish they have or do a Google search for the size of dish required in your area. you will either need a smart tV with built in satellite receiver2 coax connections or a hd satellite receiver. 2. smart tV - connected to the internet either by ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. When setting up a smart tV initially in spain give your location as uK. this will give you apps aimed at a uK audience. 3. iPtV - internet Protocol television (iPtV) is the delivery of television content over internet Protocol (iP) networks. several internet providers offer this option. Complaint by Santa Pola resident uncovers million euro scam a gang that swindled 1.1 million euros from the bank accounts of hundreds of people has been arrested, thanks to one complaint from a santa Pola resident. the Guardia Civil has made 33 arrests after an investigation that began last october. the resident reported a scam that resulted in the loss of more than 11,500 euros from their bank account. Given the large sum, the police began an investigation and discovered this wasn’t an isolated incident. What they uncovered was a sophisticated network of that bombarded targets with emails and phone messages pretending to be their bank. the scammers told the victims that there account had been temporarily stopped and that to release funds they need the follow the link included in the message. to make the message look authentic the criminals used logo’s, corporate language and precise language and spelling. once the link had been followed the crooks were able to access banks accounts and remove large sums of cash and ‘clean’ it through ‘mule’ accounts. these mules were paid for allowing the money to pass through their account. Finally the money was transferred abroad. those arrested were aged between 19 and 46 years of age and were of different nationalities, men and women, most with criminal records for similar offences. in total, 357 victims have been identified across spain, 30 of which live the province of alicante.

Charles and Camilla in Eastenders Platinum Jubilee cameo The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall can be seen celebrating amongst the residents of Albert Square in a teaser clip for an upcoming EastEnders special. The episode will see Charles and Camilla surprise the residents at a street party held to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In the clip shown after Thursday’s episode of the BBC soap opera, partygoers are told “you have got to see this mystery guest” as it cuts to an image of the royal couple pulling up in a car beside The Queen Vic pub. As Charles and Camilla arrive they are greeted by Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer, who says: “Welcome to Walford”. Mick and Linda Carter, played by Kellie Bright, proceed to introduce the royals to their fellow residents.

Patrick Trueman, played by Rudolph Walker, tells a fellow resident their attendance is “amazing” as the royal couple talk to the crowd. Charles and Camilla can also be seen raising a glass in honour of the monarch while surrounded by the soap stars. The royal couple filmed the scenes in March when they visited the new Elstree set and met the cast and crew of the long-running soap opera. In 2001, the Queen visited soap queen Dame Barbara Windsor, who played Peggy Mitchell, on the EastEnders set. The royal visitor stepped behind the Queen Vic, strolled around Albert Square and through the EastEnders street market, meeting stars of the show. The special Platinum Jubilee episode featuring Charles and Camilla is due to air on 2nd June.

Summer of rock in Spain Spain is celebrating the ability to host concerts in style, with a number events planned across the summer. The Backlog of gigs from the pandemic are being added to those already scheduled for 2022. Global pop and rock promoters Live Nation said that this year will see an ‘overwhelming’ number of gigs, but that they do not envisage any problems selling tickets. Next year will be ‘even more epic’ as many North American artists and bands due to perform in Europe have put their tours off until 2023. This was because, in the early part of 2022, the affects of the pandemic was still being felt and performers from farther afield ‘need longer to plan’, so this coming summer would have been too early for them. Despite artistes from across the pond not due on these shores until 2023, the scene is set to explode with bands and singers from Europe – to the point where some of Spain’s largest festivals have now increased in length. The first on the calendar for summer is Primavera Sound in Barcelona’s Parc Fòrum, which normally runs for four days, but this time will cover 12 days, including two weekends, with more than 500 concerts. The festival is set to feature ‘artist of the moment’ Dua Lipa as the opening act, and the Britishborn daughter of Balkan refugees will be followed by all-girl band Pussy Riot and ‘80s household names The Red Hot Chilli Peppers will bring some ‘old skool’ rock to the festival. Over the 12 days, other acts include R&B star Alicia Keys, veteran Welsh

crooner Tom Jones, another ‘80s icon Madness, Spain’s answer to Cliff Richard, Raphael, and the early-2000s chart-topper Fito & Fitipaldis. Others include Camilo, Pat Metheny, Wilco and Andrés Calamaro. Spain’s second-largest city will host the Sónar Festival, the line-up for which includes The Chemical Brothers, The Blaze, C. Tangana, Nathy Peluso, Arca, Morad and Moderat. Independently of the festivals, major tours scheduled will include – in Barcelona alone – rock legend Patti Smith on 16th June in the Pedralbes Gardens, and Puerto Rican Marc Anthony the next day in the FC Espanyol stadium. Rauw Alejandro and Juan Magán will perform at the RCDE stadium in Cornellà on 11th June.

July will bring the Barcelona Beach Festival, the Pedralbes Gardens Festival, the Vida Festival in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Canet Rock, and Rock Fest – the latter of which includes an eagerly-awaited concert by Kiss. Iggy Pop, Rosalía, and Iron Maiden are due at Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi, and a series of festivals in the province of Girona are set to follow, such as the Cap Roig, Castell de Peralada and Porta Ferrada. All these are without even considering other massive concerts and festivals set to take place in the other 18 regions in Spain – such as ‘80s and ‘90s chart staples Simply Red, fronted by Mick Hucknall, who will be in Valencia on 7th June at the Marina Sur Auditorium and in Madrid on 9th June.

U-turn for celebrations in Benejuzar The Vega Baja town of Benejuzar has made a u-turn on its decision to cancel all its fiestas for this year. The initial stoppage was due to a budget dispute within the Town Hall, after a special council meeting aimed at increasing the coffers for the town’s fiestas, failed to allocate any additional cash. This meant that the roll over budget from 2021, when there were no celebrations due to the pandemic, was too low to fund the traditional events. The town’s Mayor had announced that there would be none of the usual fiestas or celebrations in 2022. However, on Friday (27th May) the City Council has hosted a new extraordinary plenary session to agree the budget modification with a sufficient budget to carry out all the scheduled events. The original budget of 80,000 euros has now been increased to 178,000

euros, which will allow the patron saint festivities to be carried out as planned, as well as the rest of the festivities of the municipality during this year, including the Pilgrimage of the Virgen del Pilar. With this agreement between all of the municipal groups, the scheduled events will continue. “I want to thank all the groups that make up the City Council that we have agreed to vote in favour of the Benejúzar festivities”, said town’s Mayor, Rosa García. She apologised to the public, “especially to those people, groups and associations that are involved in the patron saint festivities for the contradictions that their public representatives have announced in recent days, but it is also essential to explain that the decisions had to be made to uphold administrative rigor and comply with the law”.

Aperol alfresco bars

Many of us pop back to the UK across the summer months to catch up with friends or family, or just to escape the heat. And this summer expats will be able to enjoy one of the most popular cocktails, Aperol Spritz, at an official bar. The iconic brand is taking over a number of locations across the UK to set up Italianinspired outdoor bars. Starting off in Covent Garden, the Piazza Aperol will be home to pavement café style seating, a bocce pitch, a double-tier Aperol Spritz Bar, complimentary light bites, and, in a unique take on the Italian scooters that are such a part of every piazza – a revolving scooter bar. Loris Contro, Campari Group UK Italian Icons Brand Ambassador, said: “The Italian

piazza is the beating heart of any town or city, where family and friends come together to mark the end of the working day, and the beginning of the evening to come. “With this summer set to be more sociable than ever, Piazza Aperol will transport you to Italy with its celebration of the spontaneous and joyful, continental way of life. As an Italian, I know how important embracing these moments is, and what better way to do it than in the sunshine with a perfectly poured Aperol Spritz and good company?” • Covent Garden (8th June 2022 – 19th June 2022 (excluding 13th June 2022)) • Manchester Oast House (13th July 2022 – 24th July 2022) • Birmingham Canal House

(Open now until – 30th September 2022) • Bournemouth WestBeach (Open now until – 30th September 2022) Since we’re already discussing Aperol, then how about this for a discovery... we just found out we’ve been making the brand’s famous spritzes wrong this entire time. If you are like most pople, then you’ll have been making your spritzes with as much as four parts Aperol, two parts Prosecco and a dash of soda, or at least equal parts — but those measurements are completely wrong. According to the brand’s official website, it turns out that the actual measurements are three parts Prosecco, two parts Aperol and one part soda.

Fashion show raises cash for families in need

The AAN is a charity that feeds the needy of La Marina and San Fulgencio. A charity spokesperson said, “Our recent fashion show was a great success and raised over 530.00 euros. As our photo shows, we have a selection of beautiful Bridal Gowns, we have five in total. Can we say a big thank you to Michelle for providing the music, to Jacks Bar and Kosy Korner for the use of their premises as a catwalk, to the public for

their continued support, and not forgetting the wonderful

models for their time and hard work.”

Keeping your weight in check can be challenging, as there are a number of ways you can put on the pounds. You can add to the scales by increasing muscle mass, by increasing water and glycogen levels in cells, or most commonly, by putting on fat. We all know that, in order to achieve and keep a healthy weight, we should eat a balanced diet and exercise. But sometimes we seem to be doing everything right and yet, the scale doesn’t move, or worse - it moves in the opposite direction. All of a sudden, we’re gaining weight and the worst thing is that we don’t know why! There is more to gaining weight than simply consuming more calories than you spend. Our bodies are not an exact science, and we surely have to take into consideration many other factors. For example, it’s well known that metabolism and hormones also play a key role in weight regulation. Indeed, there are many subtle things that can contribute to weight gain. Some of these things are more evident to us, while some others we might not even be aware of. Did you know that where you live or the cleanliness of your house can influence your weight? Or how about your job or how fast you eat being able to impact your waistline? Like these, there are many other unlikely ways we can gain weight, without even realising how or why.. If you’re putting on weight and can’t quite figure out why, then you’ll probably find the answer below.

Not Relaxing Stress can make you fat. You are more likely to crave high sugar and high fat foods. For this reason, it is very important to find a way to relax and alleviate the stress in your life.

Eating Healthy Some “healthy” foods are just junk food in disguise. From fat free yogurts to breakfast cereal packed with sugar, many foods are branded as healthy but are actually poor additions to our diets.

Eating too many healthy fats Healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, and coconut oil can be great as part of a balanced diet. But these are highly caloric, so you can easily consume more calories than you thought you would.

Dirt Researchers have found that some household dust contains chemicals that might promote the development of fat cells. Lack of Sleep Sleeping is essential for cellular regeneration and numerous physiological processes that have an impact on maintaining a healthy weight. Lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain. Eating too Quickly Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly is important, as it allows your brain enough time to register that you’re full. Several studies show that there is a link between eating fast and obesity. Busy Social Life You can (and should) have a social life, but many times this involves eating out and consuming alcohol. Plus, if your friends tend to eat unhealthy foods, you’re more likely to do the same. Not drinking enough water Stay hydrated. Drinking two cups of water before mealtimes can help you lose weight. Researchers at the University of Humboldt discovered that the participants in a study had higher metabolic rates when they drank water before eating.

Skipping meals Don’t skip meals. Starving yourself, with the exception of scheduled fasting regimes, will only lead to overeating. Drinking Calories You might drink a lot of calories and still eat normally. This is because your brain doesn’t register caloric intake from liquids the same way it does with whole foods. Sodas, fruit juices, and other sugary drinks can make you gain weight. Medication Side Effect There are a number of drugs that can alter your weight. Some might increase your appetite, while others can impact water retention, hormones, and metabolism. Size Matters You are more likely to consume higher quantities of food when eating from large plates and bowls. This means that it will be easier to reach a caloric surplus, and eventually gain weight. Not Eating Enough Protein Protein makes you feel fuller for longer. It’s also essential to preserve muscle mass and regulate your hormones and metabolism. Lacking protein in your diet might contribute to weight gain. Not Eating Enough Fibre Like protein, fibre also makes you feel fuller, for longer. A lack of dietary fibre can lead to weight gain, and you will eventually eat more to feel satiated. Not Snacking Healthily When you’re hungry, you’re more likely to crave unhealthy foods. Having healthy snacks around will help you control hunger and cravings between meals.

Why do haemorrhoids occur? According to some experts, haemorrhoids are heavily impacted by genetics. This does not mean that there is a gene that, by itself, causes a haemorrhoid, but that some factors that are inherited that predispose a patient to suffer from this ailment. On the other hand, there are other factors that increase the risk of suffering from hemorrhoidal syndrome, such as constipation, prolonged defecative strain or pregnancy. Eating a balanced diet rich in fibre, with increased water intake, decreases the consistency of the faecal bolus, increasing the frequency of bowel movements and reducing the risk of haemorrhoids. Staying at your proper weight, exercising, and avoiding some irritating foods and drinks can also help control the onset of haemorrhoids. Treatment Hemorrhoidal pathology occurs when the venous structures that exist naturally in the anus dilate, lose their elastic capacity and prolapsed outward. Some of the symptoms include: stinging, itching, feeling of an anal “lump” and bleeding at the end of the stool. When not complicated, most haemorrhoids do not hurt. However, in more severe cases, they need medical treatment that may include ligation, sclerotherapy, or infrared

coagulation. In large external haemorrhoids or internal haemorrhoids that do not respond to other treatments surgery may be necessary. What is coloproctology? According to the team of experts in coloproctology of the general surgery service of Quirónsalud Torrevieja, coloproctology is “a specialty, within General Surgery, which is responsible for the management, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. It is a very important branch of medicine due to the large number of diseases it covers and its high prevalence.” Coloproctology treats pathologies such as diverticular disease, colorectal cancer, Crohn’s disease and other diseases related to the anal and perianal region (haemorrhoids, anal fissures, abscesses and perianal fistulas). In addition, pelvic floor alterations related to faecal incontinence are also treated in this field Diagnosis and treatment Due to the great variety of symptoms, the coloproctology team of Quirónsalud Torrevieja recommends patients suffering haemorrhoids to go to the doctor as soon as possible to “get an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment“.

The diagnosis of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus is based, fundamentally, on clinical history and a physical examination. Regarding the surgical treatment of coloproctological pathologies, it has advanced so much in recent years that interventions and postoperative times have been greatly reduced. Minimally invasive anal surgery In hospitals such as Quirónsalud Torrevieja it is possible to treat haemorrhoids, fissures or simple fistulas without even going through the operating theatre. “The postoperative period is simple, often without the need for follow up treatment. In addition, the new treatments are as effective as conventional ones.” In fact, the treatment is often carried out in the same consultation, so that the patient can be diagnosed and receive treatment “in the same visit”.

Coffee impacts cholesterol Drinking coffee can have a significant impact on your cholesterol levels, a new study has found. Multiple studies on the affects of coffee have shown that just two or three cups a day can result in multiple cardiovascular and neurological benefits for the consumer. However, recent research has discovered that the popular brown drink can have a significant impact on cholesterol levels, especially if the drinker is a man. A study in the Open Heart journal identified that coffee has a greater impact on the cholesterol levels of men than women, depending on how the coffee is brewed. Coffee in espresso form had the greatest gender difference while coffee brewed in a cafetiere was shown to have the smallest. Drinking three to five cups of coffee per day was linked to higher overall cholesterol levels in men than women. A similar impact was noted in coffee prepared in a cafetiere, but only after six more cups of the popular brew.

Researchers from the study, conducted by The Arctic University of Norway, wrote: “Coffee is the most frequently consumed central stimulant worldwide. Because of the high consumption of coffee, even small health effects can have considerable health consequences.” It is unclear as to why coffee causes the gender imbalance, as more research is required in this area. The study also associated coffee with an increased risk of heart disease. High cholesterol levels are one of the main risk factors for heart disease. Even so, this shouldn’t stop coffee drinkers from consuming the brew, as previous studies have identified health benefits from the naturally occurring compounds within it. However, identifying the potential benefits of these compounds can be difficult said researchers as they depend: “On the variety of coffee, species, roasting degree, type of brewing method, and serving size. This demonstrates how coffee

contains compounds that may lead to multiple mechanisms operating simultaneously.” It is important to note that there are other factors to consider with regard to cholesterol such as lifestyle choices. The human body requires high levels of one type of cholesterol and low levels of the other in order to function properly. The two types of cholesterol are HDL and LDL, high-density lipoprotein and lowdensity lipoprotein, also known as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol. Good cholesterol, HDL, is the form of cholesterol needed to maintain cardiovascular health while bad cholesterol, LDL, forms as a plaque in the arteries and subsequently harms heart health. Food is the main influencer of cholesterol, and some foods can have a greater impact than others depending on a person’s gender. Experts recommend increasing exercise, quitting smoking, and cutting down on alcohol consumption as methods to reduce cholesterol levels.

I discovered that my new boyfriend lied to me about not being attached. He has a wife, although they are separated (he says now, although I am not sure I believe him). He also denied having children, which turned out to be untrue, and also, I found out that he has 7 grandchildren. He disappears every now and again to fly back to England, for business, he says. I did some more investigating - it didn’t take much as his family were posting things on Facebook. Apparently, he attended a family wedding that I knew nothing about, and was posing with the woman I assume to be his wife. He came back to Spain with lame excuses. He only

ever comes and sees me now at night when the bars close; and friends tell me he is a big womaniser and has been seen with other women. Your longer letter tells me you have only been with this man for a few months. You refer to him as your boyfriend, but perhaps you should not consider him to be your boyfriend if he treats you this way. He’s lied to you at every turn, so why are you still hankering after him? This man is not your boyfriend; he is someone whom you allow to use you. Take control and don’t waste any more time on him. There are lots of lovely people out there. Mayor worried about health service as summer looms The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon has requested a meeting with the new Health Minister to address what he describes as a ‘worrying situation’ in the health service of Torrevieja. Dolón, sent a letter to the new Minister of Universal Health and Public Health, Miguel Mínguez, in which he congratulates him on his recent appointment. In the letter, the mayor reminded the new minister that, recently, he urged

his predecessor, Ana Barceló, to visit Torrevieja Hospital to learn about the reality of the situation in person. In this letter, Eduardo Dolón informed Minister Mínguez of his great concern about the delicate situation that Torrevieja Health is going through, especially with the imminent arrival of the summer season, in which “the population figures triple and we could face a real disaster”.

How to Appeal a Fine from the DGT If you have been caught committing a traffic offence, you are most likely to have been issued with a fine. However, sometimes mistakes do happen, or maybe you weren’t responsible for the offence being committed, in which case there is a procedure for appealing. The DGT filed an average of 10,000 traffic fines per day in 2020, sanctioning 3,877,297 drivers. If you agree to the fine and decide to pay the sanction that corresponds to you, you will benefit from a 50% reduction in the amount, which is commonly called ‘prompt payment’ (only available to those who do not complain). Assuming now that you have decided not to accept prompt payment and intend to appeal the fine, you have a period of 20 calendar days to present your allegation from the date of notification, which you may have received live on the road, by post, or, if you have already registered for the service, by email, bearing in mind what we have previously said about the DGT not normally notifying you of a fine by email unless you have expressly requested they do so in advance. In the event that the DGT tries to notify you at your postal address and does not locate you, they will publish the sanction on the Single Edictal Board. From then on, you also have 20 days to present the pertinent allegations. You have three ways to file an appeal for a fine: Online, through the DGT web application with prior identification; by post, including your letter of allegations to the address of the Traffic Headquarters that is taking

the sanction or to the Automated Complaints Treatment Centre (original documents or certified photocopies); and the third way is to do it in person at any Traffic Headquarters or Office. There are two people who can present allegations, both the accused and the owner of the vehicle with which the offence was committed, in the event that the person responsible for it has not been identified by an officer. The allegation can also be presented by another person as long as they have a document signed by the interested party authorising them to make the request. Be careful because the owner of the vehicle in question m u s t correctly identify the fined driver in their car, otherwise they would be committing a very serious offence fined up to 1,500 euro. Normally, both the DGT and the municipalities have one year to collect the corresponding fine. When you submit your appeal, it is essential that you quote the disciplinary file number, which is made up of 12 figures and is found at the head of the communication sent by the DGT. If you present the allegations by another

means that is not online, you also need to write a document explaining your allegations or the requested appeal. The DGT does offer a template that you can follow as a guideline. As part of your appeal, provide all the documents that you think can exonerate you from the sanction. Traffic will analyse the evidence and decide whether or not you are right, issuing a resolution proposal that can be acquittal (the interested party is not sanctioned) or condemnatory (the interested party’s allegations are dismissed). If the resolution is condemnatory. Don’t worry, all is not lost yet. If you do not agree with the resolution, you have the option of filing an appeal for reconsideration and you have a period of one month from the notification of the resolution to present it. If your arguments are not admitted by administrative means, you have the option of resorting to judicial means through a contentiousadministrative appeal. However, in this last case you need a lawyer, but the process itself of presenting allegations and appeals is totally free. The DGT website can be accessed at www.dgt.es, where, once you have registered, you can access the electronic office to carry out a variety of functions, including fines, or MULTAS in Spanish, where you can also obtain more details about the appeals process, which can also be translated into English.

The Importance of Checking your Windscreen Wipers It might seem obvious, but visibility is essential to safe driving. For this, we must keep our car in good condition, including the windscreen wipers, which, according to the DGT, should be replaced more frequently than you perhaps realise. In time, there will be signs that indicate that we should change the blade as soon as possible. First of all, if the sweep of the wipers leaves marks, it is because the

rubber of the blades is in poor condition, this is due to natural wear, often made worse by extreme changes in temperature, for this reason we must replace this accessory. On the other hand, if there are shakes and/or noise, you will also have to buy new ones. Likewise, for these to maintain their effectiveness for a long period of time, it is essential to clean them, at least once

a month, to eliminate any adherence that harms the sweep. Similarly, it is not recommended to activate the windshield wipers when the glass is frozen or accumulates a lot of dust, because the surface of the blades can be damaged. In fact, the DGT recommends replacing the windscreen wipers every six months or, at most, every year. This way, they affirm, we will get a much cleaner and safer view. Heat and dirt deteriorate wiper blades, which could cause structural damage to the glass or worse wiper efficiency. In addition, the DGT adds that this element in correct appearance “helps good visibility in rainy conditions or when riding on very dusty roads.” Remembering that your screen wash tank must always be full, and they even warn you to mix it with products that help improve cleaning. The windscreen wipers perform more than 750,000 sweeps adequately during their natural life, which means cleaning the surface of almost 80 football fields. Thus, specialists also recommend replacing them once a year or when stripes and blurred surfaces are seen on the car window. Similarly, if they make noise on every movement, it is because those brushes will no longer serve their purpose, as we have mentioned. There is a fine for failing to keep the windscreen clear, which we more often see when the windscreen hasn’t been correctly cleared of snow, ice or after a particularly dusty rainfall. You do risk a fine of 200 euro for failing to keep your windscreen clear, so it is important that the windscreen wipers are in optimum condition to allow them to do their job.

On the 25th. May over 30 members and guests competed in an Individual Stableford Competition at Font Del Llop and the 2nd game of this year’s Eclectic at the course. Despite a stiff breeze at times, conditions were good which contributed towards the generally good scores achieved on the day. Although not to everyone’s liking, in view of the number of ravines and expanses of water that have to be successfully negotiated when teeing off on a number of holes, Font Del Llop is a fair test of golf to both novice and experienced golfers alike. After the game we returned, as usual, to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where welcomeTapas was eaten and the day’s prizes awarded.

Well, the Champions League Final wasn’t really supposed to be like that - was it? There were tears before the game - Liverpool fans being needlessly gassed by French police for daring to want to be inside the ground in time for kick off given they had tickets. And there were tears after the game after the one area where everyone said Real Madrid could beat Kloppo’s lot came to fruition. The scenes before the game were crazy. UEFA did their usual of pointing the finger everywhere else other than at themselves and the game kicked off at a very curious 36 minutes late. When the game did get underway, it transpired that all the Mohamed Salahled chat of a revenge mission was a bit premature as Thibaut Courtois put in a one-man show to keep Don Carlo’s side in the game. The big Belgian feels underappreciated in England, so single-handedly stopping Liverpool winning the Champions League will no doubt boost his reputation with fans of almost every other club. Liverpool managed to get 20 plus shots at goal and, just like in the other finals this season, scored a big fat zero. And then, as predicted by pundits far and wide, Trent Alexander-Arnold switched off and allowed Vinicius Jr to slip in and score the game’s only goal. So, after all that potential, can Liverpool’s season actually be considered successful? Being blunt, they failed on the two biggest stages - not winning the Premier League and losing in another Champions League Final. Michael Owen doesn’t see that point of view - he thinks the Reds are still the best team in Europe, something immediately put down by Rio Ferdinand who knows a thing or two about actually being part of the best team in Europe. Personally, my favourite part of the whole shebang was Toni Kroos walking out of a post-match interview because he thought the questions were rubbish

- “90 minutes of football and this is the best you can come up with?” Love that - more of that in the Premier League next season, please. Joining Fulham and Bournemouth in the top flight next season will be Nottingham Forest who beat Huddersfield at Wembley in the playoff final. They nicked it 1-0 thanks to a Levi Colwell own goal and a big helping hand from VAR. Steve Cooper joined them when they were bottom of the table and now he will be a Premier League manager next season - Forest back in the big time, who’d have thunk it. Given the complete lack of matches now that the season is over, we need to spend some time checking out the transfer chat otherwise there’s not much else to say. Manchester United need to get busy and they’ll be doing it without the help of their super-consultant Ralf Rangnick who has been quietly sidelined to Austria after his awful caretaker spell. To celebrate, the club would like to pay Frenkie de Jong more than Ronaldo. I’d love to think that is a clever way of saying they are getting rid of CR7, but I suspect not. They also want Kante because why would you get that very expensive data and scouting department trying to find the next Kante? Tommy T hasn’t decided if Conor Gallagher is the next Kante - hey United, he is, so here is an idea. And he’ll be cheaper than the older, injuryprone one. Jurien Timber of Ajax and Darwin Nunez of Benfica are also on the list - though Nunez won’t come cheap, Benfica have quadrupled the price since Brighton were interested last season and now want 100m big ones for him. Also on the long list is Pau Torres of Villarreal and Ruben Neves of Wolves. Liverpool are looking to find someone who could score one of 25 shots in a Champions League final by making contact with Barca’s Ousmane Dembele. With Sadio Mane possibly off to Bayern after Saturday night’s disappointment, Dembele on a free is a big possibility. Antonio Conte is being given £150m to spend on players - which, unsurprisingly, has persuaded him to

endure being Tottenham manager for another season. First move? Ivan Perisic on a free - I love the contradictions of Conte. No need to spend big money to improve the club, right? Now the takeover has happened, Chelsea can start planning how they want to spend their current billionaire’s billions. Defenders are the order of the day as they are losing Rudiger, Azpi and Christensen. Coming in might be Brighton’s Marc Cucurella - who doesn’t play the same position as any of the departees. Jules Kounde does though, and Sevilla would let him go for around £50m. Tammy Abraham, a record goalscorer in Italy nowadays, is interesting Newcastle. Whether Newcastle, never considered “the Rome of the North” is interesting Tammy is another matter. Diego Carlos is off to the Villa. They are seriously stealth in their moves. They also fancy another Stevie G reunion - this time with Luis Suarez, released by Atletico. Arsenal are trying to flog Nicolas Pepe and thought PSG might be daft enough to take him. They would really, really like to sign Gabriel Jesus and if they cannot pull that off, they’ll settle for Alvaro Morata who only seems to be a good signing on loan and terrible

if signed permanently. Maxwel Cornet is available for just £17.5m from Burnley and as he is the only player to not kill his vibe by getting relegated, he is interesting many - West Ham, Everton, Newcastle, Brighton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Fulham are all trying to look more attractive than the other at the bar. Brazilians might be walking away from the Premier League - Richarlison interests PSG and Raphinha is desperate to go to Barcelona. Sometimes it is fun to find a footballer that I had no idea was on the books of a Premier League team. Today’s winner is Japanese player Ko Itakura who is, of course, at Man City but been out on loan to Schalke. He’s now interesting newly-promoted Fulham and Bournemouth. West Ham are facing up to the fact they might need a new whole central midfield soon - Tomas Soucek has rejected a new pay deal and Declan Rice still won’t sign. And that folks, that draws a line under the 2021/22 season. I’d like to say it’s been fun, but I’m with the Liverpool fans outside the ground in Paris on this one - a disappointing end to one that promised so much…
