Patients being sent to private clinics in bid to curb waiting lists See page 12

the pandemic brought with it a dramatic increase in waiting lists of patients awaiting an operation in the province of Alicante. the problem is being made even worse by the lack of specialists in several areas, and an apparent lack of beds, which prevents hospitals from operating at a higher rate in order to reduce waiting lists. For this reason, the Ministry of health is resorting to a so called ‘Shock Plan’, in an attempt to reduce the number of people waiting for surgical intervention. in the first three months of the year, 3,905 people were referred to private clinics in the province of Alicante to be operated on and the bill footed by the health Ministry. this is more than double the amount sent private in the first quarter of 2020, when the pandemic had only just broken out. if last year is taken as a reference, in the middle of the third wave of covid with hospitals and clinics practically taken over by the virus, referrals have increased by 43%, according to data provided by the ministry. Generally, it is the most ordinary procedures that are sent to private clinics for surgery and the rest remain in the public system. therefore the bulk of patients who are currently on the surgical waiting list are due to have minor procedures. Specifically, more than 50% of the patients waiting to be operated on in the Valencian Community are from ophthalmology, orthopedic Surgery or traumatology. if a patient refuses to undergo surgery

through a private clinic, he or she is placed at the bottom of the waiting list for public health. in addition to the Shock Plan, the Ministry of health can try to reduce waiting lists by ‘autoconcierto’. that is, paying overtime to surgical teams to operate in the afternoons outside of their working hours. due to the personnel needs of hospitals, this program has hardly changed compared to before the pandemic and in the

Alicante province barely a hundred more operations have been carried out compared to the first quarter of 2020, up to a total of 3,590 operations. Critics do concede that there has been a spectacular rebound compared to 2021, when in the first quarter only 776 people were operated on, but in those very months the hospitals in Continued on page 10

Orihuela begins seasonal rescue and lifeguard service on its beaches

Social Services documentation found next to Torrevieja bin A torrevieja resident captured photos of documentation from torrevieja’s department of social services which appeared to be dumped next to a public bin. Reports indicate that a member of the public, who used to work in public administration, was shocked to find documentation with the municipal seal at the side of the street in town.

on Saturday June 4, the Lifeguard and Rescue service in Playas de orihuela for the 2022 season began, provided by the company Ambumar SyA. Antonio Sánchez, Councillor for Citizen Security and Beaches, explained that “the initial service is made up daily of 22 lifeguards, 4 adapted swimming attendants, 1 rescue skipper, 1 coordinator and 2 health emergency technicians. they

also have support equipment, such as an SVB ambulance, a jet ski with a rescue stretcher, a semi-rigid rescue boat and a rapid intervention vehicle, with hours from 10am to 8pm.” in addition, from July first the ‘full service’ will be engaged, coinciding with the high season. Sánchez said, “in total, the service will be made up of more than fifty troops, who will ensure safety on our beaches during the summer season.”

the discarded documentation appears to be from the Social Welfare department, its headquarters located a few metres away from the bin. Councillor for social services tomás Ballester was quoted in informacion as saying that the staff are carrying out cleaning work to create more space in municipal offices. he insisted that in no case have paper files with personal information been dumped. incorrectly disposing of sensitive documentation is generally prohibited by law but “even more so in the case of personal documentation in social services, which is especially sensitive. either it is destroyed or it is kept in custody,” the councillor assured.

Jubilee party at the Ambassador’s Residence

one of the biggest celebrations this week was held in Madrid on thursday 2nd June at the Ambassador’s Residence to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. hosted by the hM Ambassador hugh elliot and his wife toni, the party was attended by 300 dignitaries as well as charity workers from across Spain, invited as a way of saying thank you for all their hard work during and since the pandemic. Security was understandably tight with police everywhere and roads closed off around the embassy. the guests all arrived around 5pm and were treated to a tour of the amazing building and surrounding grounds. the

U3A members meet police chief despite the chaos caused by road repairs to a part of the feed road to the n332 at Punta Prima on the morning of Monday 30th May, a good number of u3A members managed to arrive, albeit a bit late, at the CMo to take part in their monthly meeting. the speaker for the day was Juan Castillo who is a Chief inspector and also the head of the Judiciary police in orihuela. Juan provided an interesting and informative discussion on several types of scams that regularly occur both physically or by phone, internet, etc. plus members were provided with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. information about a free App that can be downloaded in english to suitable Smartphones was provided. this service, named AlertCops, allows for fast connections to be made to the relevant police departments in cases of criminal emergencies and can also be used to

contact others with regard to health emergencies. the app can be downloaded through the normal channels providing that your phone is compatible. the morning progressed with a talk about indian customs and dancing by Madhavi who performed traditional dances as well as the more commercial Bollywood styles. normally, the May meeting would be the last meeting before the summer break. however, as the group have only recently been able to recommence meetings after the Covid pandemic, this year there will be an additional meeting to be held on 27th June. Fuller details will be available to members via the newsletter or Facebook page. details of this meeting and all other facilities available to members can be found on the website torreviejau3a.org. Anyone wishing to join the association can also find details on the website.

Ambassador gave an opening speech about the remarkable 70 year reign of Queen elizabeth ii, saying “She is an amazing politician and at the end of the day, she is my boss” then the Spanish anthem was played followed by a toast to King Felipe iV of Spain. the united Kingdom national anthem followed, sung by Stevie Spit who had been invited to the even to perform. Stevie took to the stage for his first set dressed in a platinum coloured sequin tailcoat and matching top hat. his show offered a wide range of songs in both Spanish and english and included “the Prayer” sung in english and italian, which Stevie always dedicates to the

people of ukraine. After Stevie had finished singing, a metre tall Jubilee cake with the date 1952 – 2022 and images of the queen topped with the Platinum Jubilee emblem was cut by the Ambassador and his wife. the second part of Stevie’s show followed with a traditional 1940’s singalong then a dance section which no-one escaped, as nanny (aka eileen Gleave) was there to drag everyone up dancing. the first one on the dancefloor with nanny was British consul Sarah-Jane Morris. the Party concluded around 8pm as the guests left everyone was given a special memento of the day in the form of an official Jubilee mug.

Phenomenal Spangles’ Jubilee celebration the Platinum Jubilee celebrations to commemorate hM Queen elizabeth ii’s 70 year reign, something that no other monarch in history has achieved, could not be ignored by Spangles Ladies harmony Chorus. Many weeks in the planning saw the fundraising team of Maggie Reilly, Susie Wyatt and Gale Booth pull off a sell-out event last Friday, a magnificent Jubilee Afternoon tea, with fabulous cakes baked by Maggie and savouries provided by several Spangles members, could not have been better! there was a moment of panic when the power failed, just as guests started to arrive and Spangles is extremely grateful to david Christopher from GdC Services for coming to the rescue! the urn and kettles were back on track in time! each table was named after a member of the Royal Family, with a short anecdote about each one. the guests were assigned their own Spangle waitress, adorned in a pinnie, especially made by Gale Booth. the room was dressed in lilac, with bunting and table runners made by Sheila Pina. Spangles not only provided the delicious fare, but they also provided cutlery, china, savouries, prizes, crafts, their time and so much more to make this event a resounding success. thanks go to Cora haig in Scotland, who made and packaged some beautiful Scottish tablet, which was a sell out on the craft stall, and to Barbara hewson for the delicious mini-quiches. once the guests were all served, Spangles performed some of their repertoire and received not one, but two standing ovations.

“We strive to be the very best we can in everything that we do, and this event proves that. it wasn’t easy putting it together, but it was worth it to see the smiles on everyone’s faces” Musical director, Valerie Lynch said. “As the saying goes, ‘it takes a village’, and that culture certainly exists in Spangles.” Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. they rehearse every thursday, from 10.15 am to 1.15 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle helena, Los narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. if you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www. spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com Photos by: Ryan Read & Gary Beaudin

June tourist activities include the Coast the tourist routes for June has a large number of tours to the main historical monuments of the city, a visit to the San isidro Murals and family orientated workshops. however, for the first time the program includes activities in orihuela Costa. the Councillor for tourism, María García, said: “We believe that it is a good time to introduce activities, in this case recreational, for the residents and visitors to our coast.” on Saturday, 25th June, a workshop entitled ‘Make your own Game’ will show the family how to use recycled materials to entertain the children. on Sunday 26th June there will be Medieval theatre and mask making, both at 8pm at the Solar Clock on the esplanade of Playa Flamenca. June also sees a unique route in the city that occurs only once a year: the Summer Solstice Route, scheduled for tuesday 21st June at 6.30pm, leaving from the orihuela tourist info Centre and heading to the Church of Santiago. García explained that “this is the image of our June poster, since it is a unique event that takes place in orihuela when the last rays of spring sunshine -between 8.15pm and 8.20pm - falls on the

facade of the Church of Santiago and illuminates the bird carried by the Apostle Santiago”. to commemorate this route there will also be merchandising available to buy, such as magnets and bookmarks, depicting the poster image. the June program also includes a visit to the Murals of San isidro together with a Poetry Workshop and the ‘Saying Goodbye to Spring’ route that will visit the main monuments in orihuela and that will end with a pressed flower workshop at the tourist office. there is also a ‘Welcome to the house of Miguel hernández’ tour that includes a plate decorating workshop, where the face of the poet or some of his verses will be stamped.

“these routes are a combination not only to visit our city and enjoy the surrounding beaches, but also to introduce different recreational aspects to people, as well supporting our businessmen and merchants in the area,” added María García. the councillor stressed that “we work to offer experience tourism, which it is not only visiting our city, but also engaging with commerce. that is why i encourage all merchants, SMes and companies who want to collaborate with tourism to make themselves known, either with their products or services through the tourism department. it is about making tourism in orihuela profitable for orihuela and to commercially reactivate our economy”.

Orihuela launches ‘Shock Plan’ for summer clean up the orihuela City Council is to increase cleaning staff by 68 workers as part of the ‘Shock Plan’ for the summer season. Luisa Boné, Councillor for human Resources, and Guillermo Cánovas, Councillor for Street Cleaning and urban Solid Waste Collection, have outlined the steps that both departments are taking to reinforce cleaning during the summer period and for the provision of cleaning staff. the government team of the orihuela town hall, aware of the need to provide a structural solution to the permanent workforce, has drawn up a strategy to increase the workforce and improve cleanliness in our streets. Luisa Boné, explained: “this government team is committed to improving the service provided in our municipality with the increase of 68 permanent workers in the urban Cleaning staff, going from 106 workers to

173, allocating the human and financial resources necessary for this and at the same time improving conditions of the workers, giving them the stability that they have not had until now.” When in 2012 the orihuela City Council brought the cleaning services directly under the control of the government, rather than an outside contractor, the 140 workers who provided the service were subrogated. over the 10 years since, there are 34 more vacancies due mainly to retirements that have never been filled. the Councillor explained that administrative procedures are being carried out so that, if everything goes according to plan, at the end of August all these positions will filled with permanent staff. Councillor Guillermo Cánovas, said that “from 15th June to 30th August, the Road Cleaning Shock Plan will be activated in the municipality of orihuela with the

incorporation of 75 workers for different jobs within the LV and RSu staff”. the Plan also allows extraordinary waste collection tasks to be carried out in illegal deposit areas, container repairs and signage, thorough cleaning of container points and their surroundings, etc. For the Coast this means 36 additional workers and 12 drivers. Councillor Cánovas added that “the contract for the collection of Posidonia seaweed from the beaches of orihuela has been increased by 20 percent to improve the frequency of this service” Finally, the two councillors asked for people to be aware and collaborate with the authorities to keep the streets clear of rubbish, garden cuttings and unwanted furniture; ‘so that together we can improve the image of orihuela and orihuela Costa’.

Continued from page 1 the province were seriously affected by the third wave of the pandemic, which forced many operations to be cancelled , especially those scheduled in the afternoons. For 2022, the Ministry of health will invest 16.3 million euros to pay health workers who work outside of their working hours to operate or perform diagnostic techniques and thus reduce the waiting list. For the first time ever, mammograms have been included in this programme. Lack of specialists At the moment, the lack of specialists is pressing in areas such as Anaesthesiology, traumatology and Surgery, key services to be able to improve waiting lists. Medical unions believe there has been no improvement in the hiring of professionals, therefore it is impossible for public hospitals to increase the number of operations, so it will inevitably be necessary to continue increasing referrals to the private. everyone has their sights set on September, when the Ministry of health will hire a thousand more professionals in hospitals and health centres. the increase in referrals to the private sector could be having an effect on the waiting lists, which in the last month have dropped by 467 patients in the province of Alicante. however, if the last year is taken as a reference, there are 1,121 more

people pending an operation compared to April of last year. only four health departments dénia, Alcoy, Sant Joan and elda - have fewer patients compared to April 2021. According to data from the Ministry of health there are currently 23,009 people in the Alicante province pending surgery, which represents 40% of all the patients waiting in the Valencian Community. traumatology is one of the specialties with the longest delay, especially in the case of the most frequent and simple operations, such as bunions, carpal tunnel procedures or knee replacements. in these cases, delays in the Alicante province can exceed a year. in more complex surgeries, can take up to almost two years to get to the operating table. in ophthalmology there are also delays of up to a year for cataract operations. Although not directly related to operating theatres, a lack of radiologists is also causing a delay in imaging tests that are carried out on patients and that are essential for them to be able to undergo surgery. the Ministry of health has repeatedly said that it has hired all available specialists in the Valencian Community. For this reason, health officials are looking for specialists at a national level, for which it has resorted to advertisements in the employment platforms of some scientific societies, such as Radiology, emergency Medicine

or Plastic Surgery. Bed shortages in addition to the lack of professionals, the Valencian Community in general and the province of Alicante in particular has a deficit of beds compared to the national average, which unions such as CC oo put at 3,000. this causes hospitals to be permanently operating at 80% of their capacity, especially in winter, when there is an increase in admissions due to respiratory viruses, and in summer, when the population increases, especially in coastal areas such as torrevieja and the orihuela Costa. this saturation of hospitals often makes it unfeasible to open more operating theatres in the afternoons to ease waiting list. one of the direct consequences of this increase in waiting lists is that the sale of private health insurance has skyrocketed as people try to speed up consultations with a doctor. in the province of Alicante there are already 314,209 people who have taken out a private policy, according to data from unespa, the business association of insurance companies. this is the highest number of insured persons in the province since 2011. in 2021 the sector in the province increased by 26,000 insured persons, the highest annual growth figure recorded in a decade and almost double that of 2020.

RBL Concert Band Charity Presentation Following the charity concert on Friday 29th April at the Cardenal Belluga theatre, San Fulgencio with the Royal British Legion Concert Band and Stevie Spit BeM a donation of 700 euros was made this week to Mens shed at La Marina by Patricia Shepley, secretary of the RBL Concert Band, also in attendance was david Last, the band’s musical director.

Mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, alongside several of his councillors, presented the future plans for La Mata sports pavilion. the unveiling of the plans for the new facility took place at La Mata Multi-purpose Social Centre, and was attended by numerous teachers and people related to the local sports world, as well as the architect who designed the project, Miguel Antonio Mateo Sánchez. the mayor indicated that for years La Mata has been in need of more comprehensive sports facilities with a covered section, which would offer the possibility of hosting various sports. there is currently an outdoor sports court in the Parque de Perfecta Rodríguez, but it does not have vital service facilities such as changing rooms, nor is it designed to host any competitive sport. the City Council of torrevieja, and after processing an interior Reform Plan, obtained in 2014 the free transfer of a plot of 1,367 square meters, whose destination was the construction of a covered sports pavilion. Currently, said interior Reform Plan is being updated in order to adjust it to the needs of the sports facility. the future pavilion will be located next to the access to La Mata, by the n-332 roundabout, on the block of land between Calle delfín, Calle Francia and Avenida de los daneses. the start of works is scheduled for next September/october, an execution period of 14 months is expected, so the works could be completed by the end of 2023. the budget amounts to about 3 million euros (VAt included).

the La Mata pavilion will have a 44 x 23 square metre sports court, set up for the practice of football, volleyball, handball, basketball and badminton, in accordance with specific regulations of the higher Sports Council. it will have a planned capacity for 204 seated people, two locker rooms for teams and two locker rooms for arbitration, a 243-square-metre

outdoor hall, a 38 square-metre cafeteria and two multipurpose rooms of 100 and 90 square meters. the track is designed in such a way that several disciplines can be practiced at the same time. Regarding the other multiple uses that the building allows, various social and cultural activities can be held in the three open spaces on the ground floor.

Visit Spain’s cowboy country organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo the ‘discover the Real Spain’ trips and tours aim to allow hidden gems to be experienced and explored by expats and holiday makers alike - and brand new hidden gems are being announced for June. hot on the heels of the recent Shopping and Sight s of Alicante Begona is now taking bookings for a trip that will delight the whole family. this trip will see thrill seekers head for the hills in Spain’s very own western movie set location and theme park in desierto de tabernas, in Almeria. this is known as Mini hollywood due to its similarities with the north American deserts and has been

Flamingos nest in Torrevieja for third year running hundreds of pairs of common flamingos have chosen the pink lake of torrevieja as a nesting ground for the third consecutive year. the striking birds have started building nests, laying eggs and incubating them in the pink lagoon of torrevieja, according to reports by AhSA (Friends of the Wetlands of South Alicante). the abundance of fresh water due to the heavy rainfall in spring has allowed, again as it happened in 2020 and 2021, the hatching of artemia, the bird’s main food. At the moment, three nesting sites have been formed that could contain more than 2,000 nests, although the number could increase in the coming days, according to experts. this is the third consecutive year that the pink lake has become a breeding space for these birds thanks to the unusual abundance of fresh water entering the lagoon that has coincided, in each of the three years, with the exact time of reproduction and breeding of flamingos. in recent weeks, after the rains that fell between March and April, the number of flamingos increased significantly, both in the La Mata and torrevieja lagoons, reaching a population of more than 2,000 specimens at the beginning

of the month of April in both lagoons. Since then the number of flamingos has continued to increase, currently reaching around 5,000 specimens in the torrevieja lagoon alone, a figure never previously recorded in the natural Park. the rains that fell in spring have contributed to diluting the usual concentration of salt that supports the torrevieja lagoon and thereby facilitating the explosion of the population of artemia salina, a small crustacean that inhabits hypersaline waters and is the basis of the diet of some species of birds such as the flamingo, the slender-billed gull or the white jar that inhabit these ecosystems, according to expert Sergio Arroyo. When environmental conditions are adverse, for example due to a

disproportionate increase in salinity, the adult brine shrimp disappear, but the eggs remain inside highly resistant casings that can linger for long periods of time, waiting for the necessary environmental changes that allow them to hatch. despite the small size of artemia (10-18 mm), they can offer a huge amount of food. in fact, a study carried out in the La Mata lagoon in the mid1980s which looked at the total biomass of the artemia populations estimated that it reached around 65 tons. AhSA has been in contact, via email, with the natural Park staff warning of the need to “repair the fence” in a sector of the torrevieja lagoon to prevent access by people or land predators to the flamingo nesting area.

a popular area to shoot many films and westerns since the 1950s. After filming was completed, some of the extra’s bought the set and turned it into a unique tourist attraction. the trip, on 16th June, is priced as 55e and includes coach travel from the usual local pick-up points. however, this trip also offers a lot of additional activities included in the price and so is great value

for money for a family outing or a get together for fun-loving friends. the price includes: entrance to the Mini hollywood theme Park, access to four different themed shows based around Westerns, dance, horses and falconry. there is also a lunch in the park’s self-service restaurant, access to the animal reserve with more than 800 animals, cine museum, cactus garden and much more. there is also a pool so bring your swim wear and a towel so you can cool down and relax after the excitement of the day. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the pound has had a steady week thus far, with GBP/uSd marking slight gains along the way. As we go to press, we are now within earshot of the cycle top at 1.2640, which if broken, would represent a new one-month top for cable. Given the gains marked elsewhere for currencies against the dollar, you can’t help but wonder whether the pound would have fared much better if economic data had been more forgiving, combined with a somewhat less bumpy political ‘partygate’ landscape. on the data front, the latest Services PMi was the one that caught the eye for all the wrong reasons. A nasty drop to 51.8 from 58.9, when markets had been expecting around 57.3, edges the survey towards potential contracting territory (if we move under 50.0). Manufacturing was a smidgeon better, ‘only’ slipping to 54.6 from 55.8. that drop in the composite PMi points toward faltering demand, and highlights the squeeze on real household incomes, endorsing the growing projection that the uK will now fall into recession before the end of this year. up until this release, the PMi readings had been holding up fairly well. the government responded yesterday with another mini-budget, unveiling a much-disputed windfall tax on energy companies, as they try to address the massive increase to the cost-of-living. the £15bn package is designed to assist the uK consumer, given that there will be another big increase in energy bills come this autumn. the 25% ‘energy profit levy’ on oil and gas companies will also include a mechanism to incentivise investment. the levy should raise around £5bn of the total package, and will be phased out as prices normalise. Quite what normal is, we will have to wait and see. Moreover, quite what the energy companies decide to do with regard to future investments in the uK and such, is another matter. Back to our beloved pound, and GBP/euR remains trapped within a broad 1.1600 – 1.1900 range, with the pair encircling the centre spot

of that range at present. Much like GBP/uSd, perhaps one reason for the pound maintaining its composure is that the Bank of england seem determined to continue with their current programme of rate hikes, despite a weaker outlook, as they attempt to tackle that bulging 9% uK inflation level. EURO ‘We will not be hiking rates in 2022’. Christine Lagarde’s comment at the end of last year reminds us of when Michael Fish said that there would not be a hurricane in the uK, the evening before the 1987 Great Storm caused £1.5 bn of damage, and took out six of the famous seven oaks. in fairness to Madame Lagarde, inflation was only going to be transitory back in november (sorry Jerome), and with euro-area countries now regularly occupying some of the top spots in the league of highest inflation for developed countries, the eCB needed a rethink. however, that rethink has morphed over the past few weeks, with several eCB members now blatantly calling for a 50bps rate hike at the eCB meeting in July. eCB member, Robert holzmann joined ranks with Klass Knot (he of last week 50 bps fame) to open the door to such a possibility. We are monitoring this particular development closely, as if this trickle turns into a flood of eCB members, then the chances of a big hike will get priced into market expectations. data has been giving a helping hand of late, with a stronger German iFo Survey and GdP. the latest PMi readings had something for everyone, but even where there was weakness, the declines were palatable. Looking ahead, next week is all about inflation again, and further increases are pencilled in, which could add weight to the 50bps camp. in the meantime, the single currency has been marking consistent gains against the greenback, with euR/uSd moving as high as 1.0765 this week. that may not sound like much, but that has put us at a one-month top.

San Fulgencio presents a new mobile application to promote local tourism the ‘discover San Fulgencio’ app will provide useful information to tourists, visitors and residents alike. San Fulgencio town Council presented a new mobile application ‘discover San Fulgencio’. A new initiative of the department of tourism which aims to “promote the town and provide information about the municipality to those who visit us during the summer months,” said darren Parmenter, local councillor. the app features information on the history of the town and places of interest, as well as a directory of bars, restaurants, shops and local businesses, which allows direct bookings to be made at these establishments. in addition, “all those establishments that wish to appear in this database can do so and submit an application through the questionnaire that they can find in the same application,” said councilor Parmenter. however, the app is not only be aimed at tourists and visitors. “San Fulgencio has a considerable number of yearround residents, and it is another way of getting information to them,” said darren. “there are

many people who don’t follow social networks or local news, but almost everyone has a mobile phone and is familiar with using these applications,” he added. For this reason, the app also includes practical information for citizens, such as useful telephone numbers, bus timetables and up-to-date information on local festivals and activities. For his part, tomás hernández, from the company that developed the app, pointed out that it is translated into four languages (Spanish, english, French and German) to provide greater accessibility to people of different nationalities, “as well as being very intuitive and easy to use, both for young people accustomed to new

technologies and for older people”, and is available for download from the usual mobile application platforms. the mayor of San Fulgencio, José Sampere, said that this initiative is “another idea to put us on the map and remind people who we are and where we are, especially after the last two years of the pandemic, which has led to restrictions on tourism and travel”. Sampere also pointed out that “we hope that this new promotional tool will help us to promote San Fulgencio and its urbanisations as a tourist and residential destination, as well as serving our businesses and establishments as an opportunity for economic growth and visibility”.

Locals fight for post delivery Local residents in six areas of orihuela Costa have formally requested that their post is once again delivered to their addresses by the Correos service. in 2014, the Correos requested that the national Commission of Markets and Competition (CnMC) give a “special environment” status to the urbanisations of Mil Palmeras, dehesa de Campoamor, La Zenia, La Zenia ii, La Regia and Cabo Roig. As a result these areas no longer received any post or postal deliveries to their homes. instead, residents from these urbanisations have had to collect their post from the Post office. the pedáneos of orihuela Costa have registered a letter addressed to the CnMC attaching a series of municipal technical reports, requesting the annulment of the declaration of special environment for the six affected urbanizations with the aim that ordinary postal deliveries are made in the home mailbox of each of the dwellings immediately. the technical reports from the urban Planning and internal Regime services of the orihuela City Council adequately justify to

the CnMC that the distribution of mail throughout orihuela Costa should be made to each household. Mr. Veloso, a resident and village mayor of La Zenia, pointed out that “it is a question of discrimination that we, the residents of these urbanizations,

have been suffering due to the fact that the City Council in its day did not know how to adequately defend the interests of its neighbours against the Post office and We are willing to go where it is necessary for justice to be done and we don’t have to be hundreds of neighbours going every week to the post office located in Playa Flamenca to check if we have any letters”. the Councillor for the interior Regime, Luisa Boné, said: “Reports have been collected from the municipal census

service and from hidraqua, awarded the drinking water maintenance service, in order to justify the idiosyncrasy of our coastline and dismantle the arguments put forward by Correos based on the number of registered residents in these urbanizations.” She explained that the report shows that ‘orihuela Costa is a consolidated urban nucleus and cannot be viewed as a set of isolated and independent urbanizations’, which was the basis behind the ‘special environment’ declaration. José Aix, Councillor for urbanism and Planning, explained that: “the request for revocation of the declaration of special environment to the CnMC has been made both by the villagers of orihuela Costa, as well as citizens and representatives of the affected urbanizations on the coast, as by the orihuela City Council.” he concluded by adding that “the City Council is not going to sit idly by waiting for a response from the Post office, but has requested support from our representatives in the Congress of deputies to intercede for the interests of orihuela citizens with the CnMC”.

16th-century watchtower-type military building, catalogued as an Asset of Cultural Interest.” The Blue Trails are itineraries that link, cross or start from beaches or ports that have been awarded the Blue Flag in 2022. The initiative’s aim is to promote the connection of the network of places with Blue Flags through walking trails that help value natural spaces and spaces of cultural and heritage interest. José Aix, remarked that “this award from Sendero Azul Cabo Roig recognizes that effort and rewards the transformation of these coastal paths into valuable resources for carrying out recreational, sports, tourism and environmental education activities”. According to Aix, “it is also a recognition of the work carried out by different areas of the Orihuela City Council involved in this project, such as in the Blue Flags project of our 11 beaches”.

Beverley Thompson first started volunteering for a small branch of MABS in Mazarron after moving there in 2005. After the charity’s accountant left, Beverley stepped in and within a short time was looking after the accounts for MABS across Murcia province, and has acted as treasurer ever since – one of the core team of three running the foundation. She had overall responsibility for the purchase, design and opening of the MABS respite home on Camposol in 2018. The home provides 24-hour respite and palliative care to cancer patients in Murcia and, thanks to Beverley’s tenacity, is now eligible to apply for annual grant funding for the running costs from the regional government. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I had the pleasure – and honour – of visiting the MABS hospice in Camposol last year and saw firsthand the extraordinary services they provide to cancer patients and their families. Bev was instrumental in setting this up and she should be immensely proud of what she

That all this is done on a purely voluntary basis is quite extraordinary and a testament to the dedication of Bev and all the MABS volunteers.” Beverley Thompson said: “Being awarded the British Empire Medal from Her Majesty is just fantastic and I am truly honoured. But I must recognise the amazing job the MABS volunteers do every single day and the strength and support given to me by my husband Keith should not be overlooked. From the bottom of my heart - thank you all!” The four UK nationals named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List are:

Alison Hammond wants to host Big Brother The 47-year-old star appeared as a contestant on the Channel 4 reality show back in 2002 - during which she famously broke a table - and believes that she would be a “good” candidate to host the rumoured remake, which is reportedly set to air on ITV in 2023. Asked if she would make a good presenter on the show, she said: “I think so. They need to change it up a bit. We’ve got to put it out there to the universe. Let’s make it happen!” The original run of ‘Big Brother’ which saw groups of strangers live together in a specially constructed house isolated from the outside world - aired from 2000 until 2018 and was fronted by the likes of Davina McCall, Emma Willis and Rylan Clark and although

‘This Morning’ star Alison made a career in television following her appearance on the show, admitted that these days she could never sign up for fellow reality juggernaut ‘Love Island.’ Speaking on an upcoming episode of ‘The Late-ish Show with Mo Gilligan’, she said: “I couldn’t! Honestly, there would be some serious fighting. I would be taken out of ‘Love Island’, wouldn’t I?” Alison was joined on the Channel 4 chat show by rap star Aitch, who joked that he could join a celebrity edition of the ITV2 dating show and would pair up with ‘Juice’ hitmaker Lizzo. Alison replied: “She would have you for breakfast, lunch and dinner!”

Households in Spain crippled by mortgage payments The recent rise in the Euribor, the indicator to which most mortgages in Spain are linked, is threatening to hit many property owners quite hard. According to data compiled by CaixaBank Research and taking property prices, gross income and mortgage interest rates into account, Spanish households already spend 33.4 percent of their income on paying their mortgage and it is estimated that this could increase by 3.2 percent in just two years, reaching 36.6 percent by the end of 2023. The ratio is still way off the 54.6 percent it reached in the previous financial crisis, but it implies that a notable increase is on the way and could even reach 39.2 percent if market expectations are fulfilled, as it looks as if they will be from the different interest rates. Specifically, these point to a rise in the 12-month Euribor to 1.06 percent

this year and to 2 percent at the end of next year. At present, with the rise in recent weeks, the provisional average for May stands at 0.285 percent. If it closes at this level, a 150,000 euro mortgage taken out over 20 years with a differential of Euribor + 1 percent, which is reviewed annually, will see an increase of 50 euros in the monthly payments. In other words, it will cost an extra 600 euros a year. Nevertheless, experts say there is no call for alarm and the rise will not affect all families all of a sudden, especially because of the recent boom in fixedinterest mortgages; these now account for 73 percent of new mortgage loans, compared with variable interest rates. This means the expected increase will have a more limited effect on people whose mortgages have been taken out quite recently.

Spain to ban automated customer services

In a bid to rid consumers of having to deal with those universally-hated automated voices on the phone, Spain’s government is presenting a bill that would make it obligatory for companies to have a real person in customer services answer the call. The bill, which includes a number of other related measures - such as limiting the time it takes to answer the call to a maximum of three minutes - was proposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and backed by the country’s ruling left-wing coalition in November. It will now need the approval of Spain’s Council of State, followed by MPs, before it can become law. The government’s spokeswoman Isabel Rodríguez described this as the “second round”. Consumer Affairs Minister Alberto Garzón said: “Customer services... far too often cause endless headaches for Spanish families, because far too many companies create bureaucratic

labyrinths to stop you from exercising your right to service. “These difficulties also represent an enormous waste of energy, time and money for the families, with many being resigned to giving up on their rights.” Providers of basic services, such as utilities, phone and internet services, would have to offer customer service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All other firms would be obliged to provide customer service during normal working hours. All customer complaints would also have to be responded to within 15 days, with a provision allowing each of Spain’s autonomous communities to cut that down even further if they choose to do so. The law would apply to all utility providers regardless of their size, and all other companies with more than 250 workers or whose turnover exceeds €50 million a year. Fines for breaking the law would range from €150 to €100,000.

Spain to ease soaring costs due to Ukraine war Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced the extension of a package of financial measures to ease the effect of soaring prices driven up by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other factors. “The government will extend the war response plan for another three months,” he said while meeting lawmakers from his Socialist party. The measures, which came into force on 1st April and will remain in place until 30th June, include six billion euros in direct aid for companies and households hit by the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Among the measures was a discount of 20 cents per litre of fuel, with the government paying 15 cents and fuel providers the rest, and an extension of the reduction in VAT on energy costs. Sanchez did not say how much the extension would cost the public purse. “With these measures, we have been able to lower by 60 percent the taxes on light… we have broadened the extent of the social aid package to two million homes and we’ve protected the most vulnerable,” he said, referring to a measure to reduce consumers’ electricity bills. For months Spain, like many other countries, has been battling soaring inflation as a result of the tension between the post-pandemic economic recovery and the impact of the war in Ukraine. According to figures released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), inflation rose again in May reaching 8.7 percent, an 0.4 percent rise on the figure for April.

Asoka educates schoolchildren on animal welfare Willow International School recently held an animal welfare awareness day. As well as inviting the children to bring in their own pets at regular intervals, the school invited guest speakers from a local animal sanctuary to host a talk for all the students. Kristine and Nils from Asoka Orihuela explained to the students that Asoka is a non-profit association, whose main objective is to denounce the abandonment and mistreatment of animals, promote their defence and manage the charity’s Adoption Centre. It is a totally independent association whose only source of financing is the membership fees it has and the donations it receives. Asoka explained, “Every year there are thousands of animals abandoned in our cities, most of the abandonments occur during the holidays, when families who have a pet and do not know what to do with it choose to abandon it to its fate. The saddest thing of all is that this number of abandonments does not decrease but on the contrary increases year after year. Unfortunately, such is the situation of impunity, in general, by people who abandon or mistreat an animal are not discouraged from repeating the same behaviour.” The volunteers from Asoka spoke to the children about animal adoption, saying, “In a perfect world, no one would buy dogs or puppies from pet shops or online. Often, the mothers that are used to breed puppies are kept in terrible conditions. We had one Chihuahua male that had a fused spine as a result of forced breeding. Not only

that but if not all of the puppies from a litter sell, they are put down when they grow too much.” Asoka also advised anyone looking for a particular breed to consider adoption, explaining “If you want a specific breed, talk to us, with patience, most common breeds do come in to our adoption centre.” The volunteers also encouraged the students and their families to get involved, saying, “We invite everyone to come and meet our wonderful animals. We need dog walkers all the time – not only does this get the dogs out of their enclosures, but it’s good exercise for the dogs too! The refuge is in the village of San Bartolome, near the Vega Baja hospital and is open every morning, seven days a week. There are lots of ‘waggie tails’ waiting to greet you! Help is especially needed on week days so to find out more, email Nick More on donacionparaanimales@gmail.com.” Fostering was also discussed at the talk with volunteers Nils and Kristine explaining that with so many dogs and cats in need of homes, being a foster carer is a wonderful way of helping. They explained “We usually foster out animals that are already reserved for homes in Scotland and Germany. This helps reduce pressure on the centre and leaves the non-adopted animals there to be seen by potential adopters. If you become a fosterer, Asoka provides beds, food, collar and lead.” The charity is also in need of blankets, bedding, food, medical items and sponsorship. Monetary donations and sponsorship allow them to plan for future expenses. Asoka also urges all pet owners to

ensure their animal has a valid microchip: “So many lost dogs and cats arrive with no chip. If you get your dog chipped, returning them is easy should they get lost – it’s also the law. Often, we can’t find the owners of dogs, even though they might have come from a loving home. When a non-chipped dog comes in, it also means they’ve not been vaccinated.” At Willow, the students enjoyed the day and learned a lot. Ami said “I liked that we got to see and meet different animals and learn about animal shelters, animal welfare and why breeding and reproduction of some dogs is bad. It was also sad to see what some animals go through on a daily basis.” Leo said, “I love animals so it was upsetting to learn what happens to unwanted pets in shelters. I learned that it is extremely important to neuter your pets because there are not enough people to take care of all the puppies in the world.” You can find out more about Asoka and the work that they do on social media – search on Facebook or Instagram for Asoka Orihuela, on YouTube for Voluntarios Asoka or have a look at the website www. protectoraoriolana.org

SUMMER RECIPE Chicken shawarma salad

Ingredients 4 garlic cloves, crushed 3 tbsp olive oil 1 lemon, juiced 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp smoked paprika ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp chilli powder 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tbsp natural yogurt 4 chicken breasts, bashed with a rolling pin until slightly flattened pittas or flatbreads and pickled chillies (optional), to serve For the tahini dressing 2 tbsp tahini 1 lemon, juiced 200g natural yogurt 1 tsp whole cumin seeds For the salad ½ red cabbage (about 500g), finely shredded 2 red onions, finely sliced 1 small cucumber, peeled, halved, deseeded and sliced 200g cherry tomatoes, halved 1 Little Gem lettuce, chopped 1 lemon, juiced 2 tbsp olive oil Method STEP 1 Mix the garlic, olive oil and lemon juice together in a reusable plastic container or

bowl. Stir in all the spices, oregano, a large pinch of salt and the yogurt, then mix to make a paste. Tip in the chicken, tossing to coat, then cover and marinate for at least 1 hr, or chill overnight.

STEP 2 To make the dressing, mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl, season, cover and chill until needed. Can be made up to two days ahead. Toss all the salad ingredients, except the lemon juice and olive oil, together. The salad can be assembled 1-2 hrs ahead and kept chilled. STEP 3 Light the barbecue or heat a griddle pan over a high heat. Cook the marinated chicken for 5 mins on each side, or until lightly charred and cooked through. Lift onto a board and set aside. STEP 4 Drizzle the salad with the lemon juice and olive oil, then season with salt and toss everything

together. Scatter the salad over a large platter or tip into a large serving bowl. Slice the chicken, then arrange it over the salad (or serve it on the side if you’re also cooking for vegetarians). Serve the salad with the tahini dressing on the side for drizzling over, along with toasted flatbreads or pittas for stuffing the chicken into and pickled chillies, if you like. Optional twists Veggie shawarma salad Instead of chicken, top the salad with griddled slices of halloumi. Vegan shawarma salad Omit the yogurt from the marinade and use aubergine slices instead of chicken. In the dressing, too, replace the yogurt with 100ml olive oil.

A tipple could aid recovery

Older patients who enjoy a stiff drink may recover better after an operation than teetotallers, a study suggests. People aged 60 and over who consumed a ‘potentially unhealthy amount’ of alcohol typically had a better quality of life. The heavy drinkers reported significantly better mobility, self-care and fewer problems undertaking daily activities after surgery compared to those drank less or not at all. Researcher Vera Guttenthaler, from University Hospital Bonn, in Germany, said: “One explanation may be that higher alcohol consumption may lead to elevated mood, enhanced sociability and reduced stress.” While the findings have been questioned by other academics, the researchers said the topic was ‘exciting’ and warrants further investigation. Alcohol in small amounts can make drinkers feel more relaxed and less stressed, which may have contributed to people’s quality of life being better, they said. Certain drinks, including red wine, also contain antioxidants, which can improve long-term health by reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. But heavy drinking is incredibly dangerous, with studies suggesting just a glass of wine or pint of beer each night in middle-age may age your brain by two years. Alcohol abuse is associated with several types of cancer, liver disease, pancreatitis, heart failure and brain damage. Experts recommend that adults

drink no more than 14 units each week - that’s 14 single shots of spirit or six pints of beer or a bottle and a half of wine. In the latest study, doctors examined links between pre-operative alcohol consumption and qualify of life after surgery in 628 patients that went under the knife for at least an hour. Participants completed a survey that recorded the frequency of their alcohol consumption, the amount of drinks consumed on each occasion, and occurrences of heavy drinking. They also filled out a questionnaire about their quality of life, including questions on mobility, pain, anxiety and daily tasks, such as washing, dressing, work, socialising and leisure. This was done before the operation and again 180 days after. Before surgery, those who drank more reported better overall health, less pain or discomfort, and were more likely to perform self-care and had a better ability to perform usual activities compared to those who did not drink at all or only consumed low levels of alcohol. After surgery, those who drank more reported significantly better mobility, self-care and usual activities than ‘low alcohol consumption’ patients. Ms Guttenthaler added: “Our study finds that older patients with potentially unhealthy alcohol intake report that some aspects of their quality of life are better compared to those who abstain from alcohol or drink at very low levels.’” Researchers accounted for

differences in age, body mass index and education level but not for socioeconomic status, physical activity or co-morbidities. Exciting studies Co-author Dr Maria Wittmann acknowledged the limitations of the study, adding: “Only a tendency in the relationship of alcohol consumption and quality of life could be assumed, but this is an exciting topic for further studies.” Dr Tony Rao, from King’s College London, said non-drinkers in the study may have quit because they were in such poor health, while heavy drinkers consume more because they are fit enough to continue socialising. He added: “This study does not drive home the clear scientific message that alcohol is a direct cause of better

health.” The findings will be presented at the Euroanaesthesia Congress in Milan. Meanwhile, another study due to be presented at the conference suggests that aromatherapy could reduce the use of post-surgical pain relief medication. The preliminary US study, which is still ongoing, suggests the use of essential oils could reduce opioid use after surgery by half after hip replacement surgery. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh examined data on 25 participants given aromatherapy after surgery. They found that total opioid use in the first 48 hours after surgery was 50 per cent lower among those who received aromatherapy and their anxiety levels were lower.

Drink coffee for longer life

Coffee drinkers are up to a third less likely to suffer an early death — even if they take sugar. In a study of 170,000 healthy Britons in their 50s, researchers looked at people who drank unsweetened or sweetened coffee and no coffee at all over seven years. They found that drinking between two to four cups per day was the sweetspot, regardless of whether they used sugar or not. Unsweetened coffee drinkers had up to a 29 per cent lower risk compared to non-drinkers, while sweetened coffee was associated with a 31 per cent lower risk. But the researchers from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, said the average coffee drinker only added about a teaspoon of sugar. This is far less than the amount in many popular coffees from high-street chains, experts warned. Consuming too much of the white stuff can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity, diabetes and heart

disease. The new research joins a plethora of studies linking coffee to numerous health benefits, including general longevity, and less chance of depression or diabetes. Chemicals in coffee are believed to reduce

inflammation, boost metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity. In the study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers analysed health and diet data from 171,616 British people who participated in the UK Biobank study. Participants, who had an average age of 55 at the start of the study, were asked to fill out a daily diet questionnaire five

times over the course of a year between 2009 and 2012. This was used to calculate their average daily coffee consumption, including if they used sugar or an artificial sweetener. Three-quarters were coffee consumers, of these about half drank it unsweetened, one in six had sugar and one in 20 used artificial sweeteners. Researchers then checked the health records of the participants for the next seven years, recording if they died. The study did not look at whether participants added milk or what type of coffee they drank - two factors that may skew results. By the end of the research period, 3,177 participants had passed away, the majority from cancer or heart disease. The scientists found a ‘U-shaped’ association between the amount of coffee consumed and its protective effect. Drinking between two and four cups provided the lowest risk of death but more than six appeared to raise the risk.

Don’t stub out your senses: The impact of smoking on your sight Quitting cigarettes does not only help to protect your lungs, it can reduce your risk of developing more than 50 health conditions – including those that affect your sight. While traditional tobacco smokers remain the most at risk, vapers aren’t in the clear research shows those who vape are 34% more likely to suffer from visual impairments than those who had never tried it.

On World No Tobacco Day (which took place on May 31), the experts at Specsavers Ópticas explained the impact smoking can have.Lisa James, store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar,is passionate about the health benefits of quitting smoking, after stopping herself more than 20 years ago. She says: ‘We all know that smoking has a terrible effect on your lungs, but it can cause so many health problems around the body,

including your eyes. Studies have shown that smoking can double your chances of developing cataracts, triple chances of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), increase the risk of uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye) and double the risk of diabetes, which in turn could lead to diabetic retinopathy. ‘Research also indicates that vapour from e-cigarettes can cause irritation and lead to dry eye syndrome and have

a higher impact on eye health compared to those who don’t vape at all.’ For more information or to request an appointment at your local store, visit www. specsavers.es.

I am a resident in Spain. I lost my husband two years ago. Now my health is failing; I have just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, and my mobility is not great. It’s a struggle getting out and doing things like shopping. I have a carer three times a week to help me bathe and dress, and she does light work around the house and gets in groceries. But the charges for care I am finding a real struggle. I only have my basic state pension coming in. I have savings, but they are dwindling. My stress levels are so bad that I am turning more and more to drink to cope with my worries. I am gaining weight,

CostaBlancaPeople 7th - 13th June 2022

and becoming unfit because of what I am doing to myself. But there is no solution. I have thought of returning to England but it does not appear to be very easy to move back since Brexit. I would suggest you talk to someone at the British Consulate here in Spain, about the possibility of you returning to England. You will find them online. In the meantime, there is charitable help here. I have sent you details of local Agencies who can assist you with shopping, and help around the home. Also, there is a benefit you can apply for in Spain, called the Ley de Dependencia. I have also sent you the

details of a Spanish Agency (who speak English) who will help you apply for this. Finally, are you aware of the Attendance Allowance benefit? This is a benefit that you can apply for in England, and receive whilst living in Spain. With your diagnosis of osteoarthritis and the help you require, I feel sure you will be considered for the higher rate. The benefit is not means tested, meaning your wealth will not be taken into consideration. There are English Agencies here in Spain who will help you apply for the benefit, so you don’t have to feel overwhelmed about the process of application. I have sent you details of this, and please, anyone else who would like the information, please contact me.

Astonishing results from new breast cancer drug Millions could benefit after research into a new treatment for women with incurable breast cancer yielded “astonishing results”. The Welsh-led study saw women with a genetic abnormality in their cancer given a new drug combined with hormone therapy. It found they could expect to survive almost twice as long compared with those given standard treatment. The study’s co-lead, Prof Rob Jones, of Velindre Cancer Centre and Cardiff University, said:

“There has never been a trial targeting this genetic pathway in breast cancer that has an overall survival advantage like this - it’s really quite extraordinary. “When a patient is diagnosed with metastatic cancer [a cancer that has spread], the most important question for the patient is ‘how long have I got? Am I going to see my grandchildren grow up?’ “We’re not able to offer a cure - but we are buying people additional really important time they can spend with their families and friends.”

The DGT Explains What Parts of the Car are Reviewed in the ITV To drive on the road, the car needs to pass theInspección Técnica de Vehículos, a vehicle inspection similar to the UK’s MOT, commonly known as the ITV. In the inspection, it is verified that the vehicle complies with the safety and polluting emission standards, whilst the technicians verify that there are no faults that could endanger road safety. But many will wonder what parts of the car are reviewed in the ITV that is mandatory every two years until they are 10 years old. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) have provided a list of all the components of the vehicles that are inspected so that they satisfy these minimum safety requirements and have the permit to drive on the road, an accreditation that translates into a sticker that drivers must display on the front window. What parts of the car are reviewed in the ITV - Vehicle identification. The ITV not only looks at the state of the car. It is also important that the make, model, chassis number and licence plate of the vehicle coincide with those indicated in the documentation of the vehicle that is presented. When an appointment for the exam is made, the originals of the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica, the ITV card, and thePermiso de Circulación, the logbook, must also be presented. - Bodywork. The exterior part of the

Inside. During the ITV test, the seats are examined to verify that they are well attached to the bodywork. In case of incorporating child restraint systems, the technicians will check that they are appropriate for the safety of the little ones. In this sense, there can be no elements that prevent or hinder visibility. Also, the operation of the antifreeze, antifog and the antitheft and speedometer are reviewed. Lighting and signage. Through a tool called a regloscope, the status

of the dipped and main beam lights is inspected. Both the signalling and lighting elements must be approved and comply with Traffic regulations. - Emissions. The technicians check that the vehicle does not exceed the maximum emission limit depending on the date of manufacture and the type of fuel used. Its impact on noise pollution is also crucial so that it does not exceed the permitted noise. - Brakes. Brakes are an important element for safety. That is why his review is very exhaustive: its operation, from the pedal to the wheel cylinder. - Steering. The steering wheel also undergoes a complete inspection to verify that it does not present a fault in its operation. To do this, the column, the steering box, all the linkage and the ball joints of the vehicle’s steering mechanism must be in good condition. Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension. The status of all these items is checked. The tyres must be approved and be those indicated for the vehicle model. Likewise, the suspension components, their fixings, damage, leaks or protections are inspected. Engine and transmission. In this part of the vehicle, great care is taken to ensure that the engine does not leak oil. Thus, the anchors, the battery, the fuel tank, pipes, exhaust system, the state of the transmission and its possible losses are also checked.

cyclists are treated like other vehicle drivers, they not only have rights but also obligations. That is why they too must respect a series of traffic regulations to guarantee maximum safety on the road. If a cyclist joins the road in a dangerous way, such as at a junction, without giving way, they can receive a fine of 200 euro. Therefore, before pulling out it is very important that all cyclists observe the road to which they are going to join. Logically, what you have to watch out for is that the cars are not nearby. If they are far away, in such a way that there is no danger to start the manoeuvre, then you may proceed. Perhaps this situation has never occurred to you, but if you ride at night or during periods of poor visibility, you must make sure that everyone can see you. Again, there is no distinction between vehicles, of which the bicycle is one. Cyclists must have their lights on at the front and rear whenever they ride at night, but also in underpasses or, for example, when riding through tunnels. Not having the lights on means a fine of

no more and no less than 200 euro. High visibility clothing must also be worn during these times. It must be insisted that traffic lights and all vertical signs (stop, give way, limited speed...) are for all vehicles. Here, obviously, cyclists are included. This is why something as simple as it is dangerous like skipping a red light is punishable by a fine of between 150 and 500 euro. Signalling your intentions to other road users is also a very good idea, so that they can react to your proposed movements in time. Using your arms to signal your intention to turn left or right, or moving your arm alternately up and down, with short, quick movements, to indicate you are slowing down or stopping, will help other road users. In conclusion, a bicycle when used on the road is considered a vehicle and must comply with all the same rules and laws as everyone else. However, they are also very vulnerable and so must be given the appropriate space to ride, a respect that works both ways.

vehicle» must not present rust and/ or corrosion defects in elements that affect the safety systems or edges that could cause injuries to pedestrians. For this reason, the test verifies that elements such as the windscreen wipers and the doors work correctly. Nor can any mirror be missing, and they must be in good condition. Likewise, the vehicle’s windows must be approved and without damage that affects vision when driving.

Cycling Respect As children, many of us were taught to ride a bike, taking its learning as one of our first most outstanding feats. Over the years, this children’s entertainment has become more of a sustainable and practical alternative to go anywhere. In fact, the use of the bicycle is increasing as it is seen more and more as an efficient, economical, healthy and environmentally friendly form of travel. The bike is gaining more and more prominence on Spanish roads. It is healthy and ecological, yes, but it also frees us from the unbearable traffic that breaks the harmony of urban centres. But they are not without a weak point, especially when it comes to safety. Cyclists are amongst some of the most vulnerable road users, which is why the DGT has dedicated itself integrating this vehicle into the daily activity of people so that it becomes a means of transport as valid and safe as any other. With the new Road Safety Law, the General Directorate of Traffic states that endangering or hindering a cyclist in an overtaking event will result in the loss of 6 points and a 200 euro fine. When you are overtaking a cyclist, you must change lanes if there is more than 1 in each direction, taking your position totally in the second lane to overtake. If there is only one lane, then you must always maintain a lateral distance of at least 1.5 metres when you overtake. If you are unable to do this, it is quite simple, you must not overtake. However, beyond overtaking, if

New salt tour in the making Local travel and leisure company Ociomar is planning to introduce a new tour in the coming weeks. The Costa Blanca People was invited to take part in the pilot ‘episode’ alongside Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolon and Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, Rosario Martinez Chazarra. The idea is similar to the current train tour, but with a touch of luxury. Participants will be collected by coach at a designated meeting point where they will travel through the town and to the salt works. On the way, a guide offered us the history of the salt industry and some information about Torrevieja’s local salt industry origins, revealing that Torrevieja’s salt lakes have been in operation since Roman times. On arrival, we were given a talk about the workings of the salt extraction facility before a chef prepared traditional salted fish. Local wine from the vineyards of la Mata was offered alongside salted sardines, mackerel, tuna and bonito. The chef also gave a demonstration of the traditional ways that each of the types of fish are preserved in salt, and tips on how to prepare them afterwards. These trips are designed to take place in the evenings so that participants can enjoy the spectacular sunset over the lake. After the cooking demonstration was finished, the group headed to the top of a salt mound viewing point to watch as the sky turned from blue to orange to black, before boarding the coach for drop off at the meeting point. Ociomar hopes to host these

special trips once a week and will soon announce prices and dates on their website ociomar.es The company is keen to promote the local tourist offering, and told the

Costa Blanca People, “Torrevieja is sea, and salt and fishing and we want to promote that. Our current tours offer people the chance to attend a fish auction, or board a real working fishing

vessel.” This latest sunset tour of the salt lakes will join some of Ociomar’s more high end tours, such as a wine tasting and meal in the natural park of La Mata, or dinner aboard a catamaran.

All in all, it was a pleasant way to spend an evening. The tour lasted for over two hours and as well as the food and wine, it was a wonderful photo opportunity.

Our game this month was played at Alicante’s Seve designed course, which boasts six par threes, six par four’s and six par fives. We started on time but unfortunately, our round took over five hours, we had to wait for the society in front on every hole, I notified the course that Marshall’s were required in order to try to speed slow players up, so let’s hope they take heed. Nevertheless as usual we enjoyed our game at Alicante, the greens were a little slow but this applied to all of our players, on to our results. We returned to our sponsor bar Little Leias in Quesada close to Consum, where we enjoyed sandwiches that were provided by the bar along with beers at the bar’s sensible prices. The second race day, May 15, of the SAMM Spring Season saw a good turn out of 11 competitors sailing 6 boats. Average Lap racing round an Americas Cup style course, two buoys for the start gate with another gate at the far end. Boats had to pass through the gates but could choose to round to port or starboard to find the best wind and course to sail. Race 1. Wind E, 3.3 knots. A good start except both Balaton boats (Sirocco and Ginetta) were about 4 minutes away from line at the gun. There were a few different tactics employed but Tug Wilson (Laser Radial) choose the best and varied his course to suit the wind. On lap 2 the wind dropped down to 0-1 knots which slowed the fleet but later picked back up to 3 knots, one boat however tried to take one of the buoys with them after finishing, a common occurrence.

Results were first Laser Radial (Tug Wilson), second Shoestring Dos (Brian Murray/Diane Hardwick), third Shoestring Cuatro (Vernon O’Byrne/ Mark Williams). Race 2. Wind E, 3.5 knots same course but shortened. Again good start with the Balaton boats only 2 minutes behind, Sirocco had the SAMM Commodore join as crew for this race. The wind increased to 6.5 knots average which gave the fleet a boost, and led to quite a few battles on the water, the wind also veered to ESE making the laps quicker as the boats were on more of a reach, the fastest point of sailing. Results were first Laser Radial (Tug Wilson), second Ginetta (Robert Hudson/Dawn Morgan), third Shoestring Uno (John Down/S Hall). Interested in sailing and SAMM? TALES fRoM THE ToP fLIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So, it’s hard to decide which is worse. A bunch of kids booing England taking the knee ahead of their Nations League match against Hungary or the performance served up by Gareth Southgate’s squad of English hopefuls. Mind you, what did we expect? From the team I mean, not the Hungarian fans. There was a small part of me that smirked when I heard they’d found a loophole around UEFA’s ‘behind closed doors’ ruling because honestly, who doesn’t enjoy UEFA being made to look like mugs (though, in hindsight, they are more than capable of achieving that themselves). Then I remembered why Hungary were banned from having fans at the game in the first place and it made the fact that 36,000 people, even if all but 10% of them were under 14, even more ridiculous. Given that England had lost once in the last 22 matches, and that being the penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy in the Euro final, you can understand why they tried to play with an assumption that victory was a case of turning up. Throw in the fact that they’ve got four matches in a week bunged on to the end of a long old season for many of them, and a lethargic, massively underpar performance was no real shock. I know we are obliged to like Southgate as a man - and it is impossible not to given the very sensible soundbytes he delivers on a whole range of subjects that have little to with football - but tactically, there are bigger question marks over his head than that of Andy Carroll’s soonto-be-done nuptials. Jude Bellingham, for example, is the answer to England playing with more freedom in the middle of the pitch - if, and it is a big Southgate shaped if, he is allowed to play the role he plays for his club, Borussia Dortmund. Picking him, and then expecting him to do exactly what Kalvin Phillips does in the Phillips/Declan Rice duo does not

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 31st May we fished the first round of the summer series at the El Bosquet Complex. Summer has definitely arrived with a hot sunny day with temperatures approaching 30 degrees and 15 anglers took part. Overall winner on the day the was the man, the myth, the legend, Terry “Mr Pastry” Brindley. Draw on peg 3 he fished his usual big dollop of homemade paste on the pole to take a steady stream of carp and mullet for 17.30kg. In second place was Richard “Not so Tricky” King with 18.86kg. Drawn o the old back channel on peg 22 he caught

make sense. If that’s what you want, Gareth, just pick Phillips. Justin James has barely returned from injury at Leicester City and was thrown in to see if he could be a better “right back having to play left back because we don’t have any left backs fit” option than Kieran Trippier. Sadly, his niggly injury picked up in the first half stopped further embarrassment from a Hungarian league winger in the second. Ironically, it was England’s right back who is meant to be better defensively than Trent that gave away the cheap penalty that Hungary scored. If England head to Qatar with Conor Coady and Harry Maguire as the starting central defenders, we’ll do well to get out of the group - Southgate’s loyalty to players who have performed for England in the past is laudable but come on now. Maguire is in a horrendous moment in his career and hopefully new Man United boss Erik Ten Hag can fix him up. Coady, no matter how well he talks and organises and is a leader is not a central defender in a back four. One of eight teams that could win Qatar 2022, apparently. Based on that, they’ll do well to make the last eight. But a week is a long time in international football, especially when there’s three more matches to come. One team that will definitely not win the World Cup later this year is Scotland. We’ve heard of strikerless formations being used by Peppy G at Man City - Steve Clarke felt their playoff semi against Ukraine was the time to try and play a midfielderless formation. Ukraine had absolute freedom of the park at Hampden and comfortably eased their way through to a final showdown with Wales. Gareth Bale was in no mood for apologising after Wales booked their place in Qatar. Their win over Ukraine was tense and the end result is that Balo has to now decide which of the “loads” of offers he needs to accept to stay in shape for the winter bonanza. It was Bale’s free kick that Wednesday night’s hero Yarmalenko turned into his own net to give Bobby Page’s men a first-half advantage. Wales hung on to become the first group of Welsh

on the pole and feeder with corn for 16.96kg. In third place was the everconsistent Neil McBernie. Drawn on what he considers a great peg, peg 32 he caught carp across on maggots on the pole for 15.100kg. Other section winners were Steve “Cinderella” Higgins who possibly fishing his last match before returning to the uk and joining the Chelsea Pensioners eked out 6.14kg from peg A1 and Paul Davis with 5.04kg from peg 36. The pairs event was a very close affair with only 500grammes separating the top 3 pairs. The winners were Richard

players to qualify for a World Cup since 1958, just in case you weren’t aware. I mean, you’d have thought it would have been mentioned. The transfer rumour mill is cranking up week on week and that means that at least the next three paragraphs will be full of Manchester United related fluff. Ten Hag still wants Frenkie De Jong and Frenkie De Jong still wants to stay at Barcelona. So, United are lining up Christian Eriksen just in case - a player that they tried to sign about eight years ago. The club have been offering Aaron Wan-Bissaka out to anyone that could be interested, hoping that said interested parties may not have spotted that England’s best defensive right back can no longer remember how to defend. They are also keen to get shot of Brandon Williams, relegated when out on loan to Norwich. Ten Hag is also willing to go head-tohead with his former employers to sign Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn. Sure, United’s current reset will be super successful if they snap up Spurs rejects. Sadio Mane has come up with a cunning plan to leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich. He’s taken it back to the early days of X Factor and asked the public (of Senegal) what they’d like him to do. 70% said do one from Anfield, incidentally. King Klopp is lining up Leeds’

Raphinha just in case somewhere in Sadio’s contract there is a Senegal public vote release clause. Barcelona have kindly said to Mohamed Salah that they don’t mind waiting until next summer for him to join them. No word on what the Egyptian public feel about that. The Liverpool public will be gutted to say goodbye to cult hero Divock Origi who is off to AC Milan. Who will beat Everton now? Chelsea want to get Boehly busy and are lining up Barca’s problem child Ousmane Dembele as their first new face on a free. They also like the look of RB Leipzig defender, Josko Gvardiol. Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest, welcome, believe that Burnley’s Nick Pope is used to being peppered often enough to be the ideal shot-stopper for their relegation campaign next season. Spurs, Newcastle and Aston Villa all want to give Belgian Yannick Carrasco a break from being shouted at by Diego Simeone. They’ll happily sign the Atletico Madrid winger. The Magpies also want to take Nathan Ake from Man City, much to Dan Burn’s disappointment. Brentford, rarely mistake makers in the transfer market, want to sign Watford’s relegated striker Emmanuel Dennis which immediately gets filed under the “yeah, that would work” heading.

King and Alan Hill with 22.86kg.

terrapins came floating past during the match. Fishing was patchy to say the least. Winner on the day taking advantage of a good draw was river specialist Bill Reade. Drawn just before the bridge he fished the method feeder about three quarters of the way across with either pellet, corn or wafters for 17.16kg. In second place was new member Terry Stroud. Also drawn before the first bridge he used similar tactics to Bill to weigh 10.24kg. In third place was myself, Ian Brown

Rods N reels The following day we made the short trip across to the Rio Segura at Murcia town centre. For various reasons several members were unable to attend which meant that only 4 hardy souls turned out. Upon arrival the river was a funny looking colour and one of the locals informed me that it had suffered some sort of pollution. This was without doubt the case and a few dead fish and unusually at least 3 dead

with 8.26kg which consisted of about 10 carp. I mainly fished bread in the method feeder about 10m off the far bank. Drawn on the first peg after the bridge, it was definitely a case of what could have been. I lost a minimum of 12 decent fish in some sort of huge snag that was in the middle towards the bridge, no matter what I did every fish I hooked headed for this snag which I think was a large tree.
