Torrevieja Hospital restructures Emergency Department

See page 12

After weeks of complaints over long waits and understaffing, torrevieja hospital has restructured its emergency department and has launched a crisis plan to improve the service. hospital managers met on Friday with Mónica Almiñana, undersecretary of the Ministry of universal health and Public health and enrique Soler, deputy director General of integrated Care Activity, with the aim of designing a so called Shock Plan that will come into effect immediately. the move comes after a recent barrage of complaints about the emergency department with patients being made to wait for hours before being attended. earlier this month, A&e hired a new head of Service and a head of Section, in addition to reinforcing staffing across all its professional categories, expanding hours and personnel in all the Continuous Care Points (PACs) of the department. Added to these existing measures is the creation of a new ‘quick care consultation’ without waiting, the provision of new special cubicles, in addition to the involvement of different medical specialties from the hospital itself. on the other hand, the Ministry of health and hospital management are working to support and strengthen medical specialists from other hospitals in the area, who can support healthcare activity in torrevieja at peak times.

the announcement from the hospital came after a week laden with complaints on social networks. Among the complaints, one was made public by an emergency doctor who works at the hospital in which it was claimed that “patients die unhappily in the corridors” after more than eight hours of waiting. the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón condemned the situation on thursday, saying that the situation is “unsustainable” and that he had warned about the lack of human resources, which focuses on the lack of doctors to cover shifts and delays of five, ten and fifteen hours in A&e with only nursing assistance in triage. on Friday the mayor said that what the shock plan should announce is the hiring of more doctors. he has also indicated that he plans to meet with the new Minister of health early this week. the hospital says that the emergency department has hired professionals in all categories: 38 more nurses, going from 21 to 58, eight more Auxiliary nursing Care technicians, going from 15 to 23, four additional guards, going from 17 to 21. in addition, during the easter period, two extra guards were hired. the emergency department had then also hired two additional administrative professionals, going from six to eight. however, it has not been possible to hire specialist doctors. the announcement of the ‘shock plan’ for the emergency department

coincides with the decision to leave the service of one of its most experienced emergency medicine doctors, dr. José Peris, who announced on Friday his departure from torrevieja instead join the Vinalopó hospital team. he does so after fifteen years of medical work in the emergency department and union representation. Reports claim that dr Peris is exhausted from the situation over the last number of weeks of ‘extreme saturation’ in the emergency Room in torrevieja. “doctors are vocational. And sometimes we hope to have resolved a patient’s situation and receive a smile. now we are caring for patients and their families whom we meet after more than eight and nine hours of waiting. i thought i would finish my professional life in torrevieja, where i live, but we cannot go to work scared. in January the situation improved with the new leadership and it was noted that whoever took responsibility wanted to change things. And we support it”. however, that person in charge of the service decided to leave the position in the middle of Continued on page 3

easter week due to an apparent lack of resources. the doctor indicated that unfortunately he does not trust that the shock plan will substantially change the situation this summer. he also pointed out that there are barely 16 or 17 doctors working full

time out of the 36 that are needed to maintain the service. the 24 that the management says are assigned to the emergency department, are hired on isolated shifts or are part time. “no one is considering changing their place of work at 64 years old,” he pointed out,

as a way to explain his decision and as a reflection of the situation at hand in torrevieja’s emergency department. Staff reinforcement across the rest of the hospital Since the takeover of the hospital into public management, according to figures from the Ministry of health, the workforce has gone from 1,043 to 1,793 workers, which represents an increase of 58%. the management claims that it guarantees 100% care coverage of the population in key services such as emergencies, primary care and general hospitalization. the number of professionals has also increased in Primary Care. the care strategy for this summer is focused on maintaining urgent care throughout the department with the 24-hour opening of the 6 Continuous Care Points (PAC). the integration of Primary and Specialized Care allows the PACs to be connected with the hospital, so that users can solve their health problems closer to home, without having to face long waits at the hospital.

As well as representation from the RBL there will also be a number of serving members and veterans of the Spanish Armed Forces and of the Spanish

Spains’ weather authority, AeMet, has activated a special warning for a heat wave this week. on Sunay, the State Meteorological Agency (AeMet) activated the special heat wave warning, to last at least until thursday. With temperatures in areas of Spain expected to exceed 42 degrees, it is expected that here in the Vega Baja region, temperatures in some areas could reach a sweltering 40.

in addition, southerly winds will bring the so called ‘suspended dust’, which could cause haze and reduced visibility. Advice is to avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, to remain in the shade with a sun hat and high factor sun protection. Make sure not to walk dogs in extreme heat and never leave an animal or children in a vehicle in high temperatures. drink plenty of water and encourage children and elderly relatives to do so too.

Cybercrime in Spain up by 40 percent As the use of technology among the population of Spain increases, so too does the instance of cyber crime. Guardia Civil have been working to tackle high levels of specialised cyber criminals and in october of last year, formed ‘equipos Arroba’, a new link between citizens and the Guardia’s technological investigation teams (edite). First Corporal Francisco Álvarez Fernández, a member of the ‘equipos Arroba’ said, “Prudence is important, check each message or email that arrives and reinforce security with a good antivirus. in addition, more and more small and medium-sized companies are outsourcing protection.” experts agree that there is no standard victim profile, but rather these cyber attacks can happen to anyone. After the pandemic Guardia Civil marked a notable increase in cyber crime, since purchases via the internet skyrocketed. “the internet is being used more and more, especially as a result of covid, which meant that many people who had never used the internet or a mobile application began to become ‘computerized’. So, by increasing the number of users, the number of crimes has also increased,” explained Fernández.

Specifically, comparing the cases processed in the first four months of 2021 with the data for this year until May, the number of crimes has increased by around 40 percent. the most common computer scam is called phishing, which consists of sending mass text messages or emails impersonating the identity of a company or government body. in these mass messages, criminals hope the user believes that there is a request from his bank or a supply company with the aim of getting him to reveal his bank details. “that’s when they gain access. Without being great computer scientists, with little resources, these criminals achieve a lot. that is why it is very important to always check. if you get a message from your bank claiming something, it doesn’t cost anything to call to confirm it”, advises Álvarez. the investigation of these crimes is expensive, because the internet allows criminals to be thousands of kilometres away from their victims. the investigators themselves say it is important that in addition to having computer knowledge they also know about investigation. “You must have specific knowledge. We are

pulling at strings and evidence to reach the criminal. there are judicial and police tools to reach other countries, in addition to collaboration with interpol or europol. Many crimes are solved, but sometimes the trail is lost, but it’s the same thing that happens with conventional crimes, which sometimes you don’t solve,” said the Guardia. these cyber crimes, revealed the Guardia Civil, are not always international and are sometimes committed from within the same autonomous community or province. For example, a scam recently saw a criminal pretend to be a representative of an electricity company warning consumers that there was an unpaid bill. the Guardia Civil have arrested the perpetrator on countless occasions for committing scams of this type. More recently, he called restaurants, warning them that they would cut off their electricity if they did not pay there and then over the phone. officers say they advise citizens to treat these claims the same as you would if someone approached you on the street claiming to be from the bank – with caution. Always check before parting with any details. hang up if you are suspicious.

Man caught cheating on driving test in Alicante

A 39-year-old Moroccan man has been denounced by the Civil Guard after being discovered with various devices to help him cheat on the driving license theory exam in Alicante. officers said that the offender may not be examined again for a period of six months. According Provincial traffic headquarters in Alicante “officers have prevented this man from fraudulently obtaining authorization to drive motor vehicles, lacking the basic and necessary knowledge of road safety, which could have caused serious problems for other road users.” Guardia Civil officers based at Alicante Provincial headquarters, perform regular spot checks to detect recording equipment at exam centres. in late May, the officers discovered that a man was using a complex electronic

system in order to obtain the correct answers for the driver theory exam he was taking. the “nervousness, behaviour and posture adopted by the man during the test quickly made the agents and examiners suspicious,” said Guardia Civil. he was immediately identified and searched, verifying that inside his clothes and attached to his body, he had hidden a mobile data receiver and transmitter as well as a micro-camera attached to the buttonhole of his sleeve that captured the exam questions and a vibration transmitter that gave the answers to the exam by means of electronic pulses. his actions are considered a serious infraction, and as well as the six month exam ban, he will have to pay a fine.

Around 2,000 people, including British expats, who fled their homes when a wildfire broke out several days ago in southern Spain were allowed home at the weekend as the blaze “stabilised”, officials said. the fire in the forested mountainous area of Sierra Bermeja, just inland from estepona, was no longer spreading freely, the Andalusian regional government said in a statement. the region’s inFoCA forest fire authority “confirms the fire has stabilised and has authorised the return of residents who were evacuated,” it said. “Firefighters are still working in the area, trying to bring the fire under control.” According to inFoCA, a fire is considered under control when the entire perimeter is surrounded by a strip of land without vegetation or with already-burnt vegetation.

the fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon as the region braced for a heatwave that is set to push temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. three firefighters have been injured, including one who was hospitalised after suffering “25 percent burns”, officials said. the emergency services said almost 1,000 people had been drafted in to fight the fire and ensure security in the Pujerra area, half of whom were forest firefighters. Firefighters estimate the blaze burnt through some 3,500 hectares (8,600 acres) of forested land in a steep and mountainous area which is difficult to access. Last September, a huge wildfire raged for seven days in the Sierra Bermeja area, killing a firefighter and forcing 2,600 people from their homes as it burned through some 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres) of land.

Guardia Civil in Almoradí save toddler’s life

A three-year-old boy who presented symptoms of suffocation and was in a semi-conscious state has been saved by two officers of Almoradí Guardia Civil who performed the heimlich manoeuvre inside a pharmacy, where the prior actions of the pharmacist was instrumental in keeping the little boy alive until the arrival of the officers. the parents of the child have personally thanked the agents for the help provided. the events occurred shortly after nine o’clock on thursday night in Almoradí. A Guardia Civil patrol was alerted that there was a child who appeared to be choking in the town’s main square. the officers were only two blocks away from the area and when they reached the square some passers-by told them that the child had been brought to a nearby pharmacy, so they went inside. there they found the pharmacist who had been performing the heimlich maneuver on the child for around four minutes. one of the officers decided to take over from the pharmacist and after several minutes of manoeuvring, the child seemed to recover. however, a few moments later he presented symptoms of fainting again. the officers the pharmacist managed to keep the child stable until medical services came to the scene. the child was transferred by ambulance to Vega Baja Regional hospital in orihuela, where he was later discharged.

17 arrested for allowing vehicles with deficiencies pass the ITV

officers arrested 17 employees of a San Javier itV (technical Vehicle inspection) station as alleged perpetrators of more than 1,000 crimes of false documentation, 1,800 crimes of computer damage and belonging to a criminal organization, as indicated in a statement by the Guardia Civil. A raid at the itV station resulted in the seizure of four computer storage devices, corresponding to the different inspection lines, and the station’s own computer server, as well as all the related documentation and a vehicle. Guardia Civial say the impounded car was used as a “wild card”, replacing those that were not going to pass the routine braking and emissions tests. the investigation began last year, when Guardia Civil from the traffic bureau and investigation Group (GiAt) of the traffic Sector became aware of possible fraudulent practices related to the technical inspection of vehicles.

A few days before the itV premises were raided, all of its computer files were deleted. however, practically all of the deleted files, a total of 60,588, have been recovered through computer forensics techniques. Guardia Civil officers carried out a detailed study of more than 30,000 files and inspection reports. the documentation includes a large number of vehicles that passed two technical inspections on the same day, the first marked as a ‘fail’ and the second marked as a ‘pass’, clearly insufficient time to correct the any detected defects. the detainees, the files seized, the vehicle and the findings of the investigation have been made available to San Javier court. Meanwhile, the traffic investigation and Analysis Group (GiAt) of the traffic Sector of Murcia Guardia Civil has said that the investigation remains open.

Day out with a difference at Teulada Craft Fair on the last weekend of June an interesting Arts and Crafts Fair will be held on the square before the town hall in teulada – about an hour and a half drive away from torrevieja. More than 20 artists and craftsmen and women are expected, every one offering something different, so there will be something for everybody’s taste. this fair was originally planned for november 2020, but was cancelled at the last moment because of the pandemic. now both the artisans and the public are looking forward to the event: the artisans because they have passed through two years without fairs to sell their work, the public, because they want to get out again, see nice things and (hopefully!) buy them. the craft association Amata is in charge of the fair, selecting the participants to guarantee good quality hand made goods in a wide variety of materials and products. Are you looking for something to decorate the house? there will be water colours and oil paintings, original lamps made of driftwood or pumpkins, decorative pottery and beautiful marquetry. You want something personalised? the painter is specialised in portraits, both of people and of animals; and of course, being real artisans, all participants can take special orders if you don’t

find what you are looking for on the day. Several artisans will be at work in their boothes: making little glass animals or beads with a blowtorch, converting cow’s horn into hair combs or offering you a go at the potter’s wheel. in short: it will be an interesting event, where the children can join some craft workshops or enjoy themselves with the table

games. the fair will be set up in the Plaza de la Constitución in front of the town hall and opens Friday 24, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June from 6 in the evening till midnight. there are several bars and restaurants with outdoor terraces all around the square. More information, also in english, on 639979678.

Volunteers collect 2900 kilos of rubbish from Acequion Canal

A team of volunteers on Saturday collected around 2900 kilos of rubbish from the Acequion Canal in torrevieja. the ‘eco cleaning day’ was organised by the town hall with the aim of cleaning up the area and raising awareness among citizens about the importance of caring for the environment. Mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, alongside deputy mayor, Rosario Martínez, councillor for Youth, domingo Paredes, councillor for Security and emergencies, Federico Alarcón and councillor for Beaches, Antonio Vidal attended the event along with a group of 20 young people. the group worked from from 9.30am until around 12 noon, resulting in the collection of almost 3,000 kilograms (2,900 kilos) of rubbish. Councillors Federico Alarcón and Antonio Vidal donned waders in order to clean the interior of the canal, collecting an array of waste including mattresses, car wheels, shopping trollies and much more. other items found by the volunteers included a television, a door, a set of drawers and a large number of bottles. 13 arrested in online vehicle sale scam 13 people have been arrested for defrauding an estimated 500 victims in an online car sales scam. it is estimated that the organization could have defrauded somewhere in the region of 2 million euro from victims across Spain. Guardia Civil and national Police worked together to dismantle the criminal network with another 16 people under investigation in addition to those arrested. the 13 have been charged with the crimes of belonging to a criminal organization, false documentation and a series of other crimes. the investigation began in February 2021, following complaints made by twomembers of the public. the victims had tried to buy a vehicle advertised on a website and after paying a deposit, the seller broke off contact. on investigation, officers were able to verify the existence of a criminal organization specialized in online fraud. this gang advertised all kinds of vehicles (cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and tractors) on a website designed for the sale of second hand vehicles. they were offered for sale by auction. the interested would place a bid and after a few days, an person

purporting to be in charge of the website contacted the victim informing them that they had placed the winning bid and after the formality of paying a deposit, the sale could proceed. once the victim deposited the money, the gang cut off communication and the victim never received the vehicle or the return of their desposit. during the course of the investigation, more than 20 web pages that the gang used to carry out the scam were tracked. Likewise, a wide and complex network of bank accounts was detected, opened both in Spain and in other countries, in the

name of third parties, some with false and usurped identities. illicitly obtained money was continuously moved through these accounts, with the intention of erasing a trail and making it difficult to track. during raids, officers seized a large quantity of SiM cards, mobile phones, computer equipment and documentation, all of which is still being analyzed by police researchers. the leaders of the organization used several security measures to avoid detection including masking their activity online and spending long periods of time abroad.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP there has been much negativity surrounding the uK recently. on the political front, there has been that vote of no confidence in PM Johnson from his own party. he may have won, but the closeness of the vote, with a whopping 41% of his own party voting against him, will make it challenging for the PM to push forward his agenda effectively. the distraction for him and the government comes at a difficult time, with inflation in the uK currently ranking amongst the highest in the developed world, and real income growth lagging too far behind. the cost-of-living increases are therefore accelerating rapidly, and are likely to get worse before they get any better, as the energy price cap gets raised again later in the year. in a report published just this week, the oeCd think that the uK will be 19th placed for growth next year amongst the G20 group of nations, only outpacing Russia’s growth. therefore, the chances of a technical recession, which is generally considered two consecutive quarters of negative growth, look very high. Moreover, the Boe look likely to raise rates again in the uK next week, as they try to impact the surging inflation. of course, that just puts even more pressure on the pockets of the poorest in the uK, who rely on credit cards and high-interest borrowing schemes to get by. in fairness to them, the government are working on schemes to try to help those who need it most, but those schemes should be targeted, specific and not general in nature. in spite of all this, the pound has had a rangebound week, with GBP/uSd maintaining a tight 1.2500-1.2600 range for the most part. GBP/euR drifted back up to 1.1800 yesterday, but that was more about euR weakness (see euR).

EURO the latest eCB meeting this week had been welcomed with almost fever-like anticipation by markets. Whilst most had agreed on what the eCB were likely to do this month (no rate hike, ending APP), there was much debate around what they might say about what they were likely to be doing in terms of the size and timing of future rate hikes. in the end, the eCB gave pretty good forward guidance, suggesting that they ‘intend to raise the key eCB interest rates by 25 bps at its July monetary policy meeting’. September now becomes the interesting month, with the eCB adding that, if the inflation outlook is maintained or gets worse, ‘a larger increment will be appropriate at the September meeting’. the interesting bit there is that the eCB have flipped their narrative on its head, and effectively said that they will raise rates by 50bps in September, unless inflation markedly improves region-wide in the meantime. that gave the hawks something to smile about. Call that bit a hawkish surprise, if you like. the day before that eCB had seen some surprisingly stronger growth figures for the region being released, with a 0.6% (QoQ/ Q1) jump doubling expectations, as well as a decent improvement in employment. this had ensured that the single currency went into the eCB meeting on the ascendency, with euR/uSd probing 1.0750. despite the hawkish surprise, those gains were short-lived, with the single currency slipping back in the immediate aftermath, most probably driven by disgruntled traders who had been hoping/looking for a 50bps hike in July. now that the eCB meeting is behind us, and with the next keynote data being hiCP inflation due out this time next week (Friday), the single currency is likely to be led by the dollar moves over the coming days (see uSd).

Ukrainian Torrevieja North residents “Art and the sea” children’s art project inaugurated meet the police family robbed of life-savings

A family of ukrainian refugees, forced to flee the Russian invasion, has been robbed of their 10,000 euro life-savings and passports after being targeted by two men in Alicante. the father of the family was approached in his parked car and asked for directions, while an accomplice grabbed the belongings from the back seat. national Police were given descriptions of the Algerian men and two suspects were located the same day. Fingerprints from inside the car matched one man and several of the stolen items were recovered from their accommodation. Both have been arrested.

A group of Spanish and english residents at the recent torrevieja north neighbourhood Watch group meeting, held at oasis San Luis, were given an informative talk on personal safety as well as property protection by the Guardia Civil. Councillor Gitte Lund thomsen was on hand to translate and particular advice was given to keep information and serial numbers of valuable property, such as computers and televisions in order that they are easily traceable. ‘hugger muggers’ are still active and mobile phones are a key target. it is recommended to find the serial number on your mobile phone by dialing *#06# and to keep a record of the number in case your phone ends up lost or stolen. the group were urged to be observant of unoccupied properties and to report suspicious activity or attempted breakins immediately so the police can pro-actively attend and make arrests before robbers or squatters actually enter a property. the benefits of using

the Alert Cops app was explained as this app gives very quick access to the police. Paulino from the local police was in attendance to explain the different services the local police provide and to respond to some local concerns. the group were told that the local police office in Calle Paganini will be open on tuesdays from 10am to 1pm. the group were also advised that taking photos of suspicious persons was allowed but that they must not be published and only given to the police. With many complaints recently about unsafe and poor condition of footpaths and potholes , photographs were given to Councillor Lund thomsen with the request the area be reviewed and urgent repairs undertaken. Residents are advised to make immediate reports to the council of any unsafe footpaths and not to wait for such as these meetings to make reports. the next meeting is on the 27th June and residents have again invited the Mayor to meet the group.

Police investigate 20,000 undelivered letters

An Alicante postman is under investigation after bags and bags of mail were found at his former home. More than 20,000 undelivered letters dating back to 2012 and 2013 were found crammed into bin bags at his home. the discovery came after the 62-year-old, who has not been named by police, sold his house in Biar, a town of about 3,600 people at the foot of the mountains near Alicante. When a construction crew showed up to renovate the newly purchased house, they found rubbish bags scattered throughout. After the man ignored repeated pleas to empty the house, the builders began opening the bags. What they found were stacks of sealed letters, bills and frayed official correspondence dating back a decade, all of them destined for residents in one area of Alicante.

“there was not one package,” police sources told the newspaper el País, “because they are subject to registration and a more thorough follow-up by the post office.” Police suspicions swiftly fell on the former owner of the house. in 2013, the post office had opted not to renew his temporary contract, citing what police described as “irregularities” that had plagued his delivery route in his year as a letter carrier. the man was briefly arrested by the Guardia Civil last week and accused of “infidelity in the safekeeping of documents”. the trove of stolen correspondence, in the meantime, has been handed back to Spain’s post office. the letters will remain at the disposition of judicial authorities during the investigation, until a judge determines that the letters – posted more than a decade ago – can finally be delivered.

Spanish London Bridge hero could become a saint the family of the ‘skateboard hero’ of the 2017 London Bridge terror attack have launched a campaign for him to become a saint, with support from the Roman Catholic church. ignacio echeverría, 39, was in Borough Market on 3rd June, 2017 when he used his skateboarder to fend off three terrorists, earning the title the ‘skateboard hero’ from his friends. the Spanish-born banker lept into action when he saw a man attacking a police officer, before moving on to attack a woman. ignacio ran towards the terrorist and started hitting him with his skateboard, diverting his attention long enough for others to escape to safety. When ignacio tried to take on a second a terrorist he was fatally stabbed in the back. now, his family have announced they are working with the Roman Catholic Church to start the process of canonisation. the campaign is reportedly inspired by the words of the Pope written in an open letter shortly after the attacks. “the heroic offering of life, suggested and sustained by charity, expresses a true, complete and exemplary imitation of Christ and, therefore, deserves the admiration that the community of the faithful usually reserves for those who have voluntarily accepted martyrdom of blood or have heroically exercised Christian virtues,” Pope Francis wrote. he went on to say that those who ‘offer their lives voluntarily and freely

for others’ are worthy of distinction. the comments prompted Juan Antonio Martínez Camino, the auxiliary bishop of Madrid, to write to ignacio’s family to ask if they would be interested in pursuing his canonisation. An association to promote his path to sainthood was set up last november. ignacio has already received several posthumous honours, including the Spanish order of Civil Merit and Britain’s George Medal, which was bestowed on his parents by the Queen. in Spain, two skateboard parks have also been named after him in Madrid and Alicante.

Road to sainthood the process of becoming a saint is a long one. Candidates must normally have been dead for a minimum of five years before they can be considered, although this can be waived by the Pope. the ‘five year rule’ is designed to act as cooling-off period allowing a person’s case to be evaluated objectively. once the five-year period has passed, the bishop of the diocese where the person died can open an investigation into their life to decide if they lived with sufficient holiness and virtue to be put forward for Sainthood. if enough evidence is gathered, the bishop can ask the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to make a recommendation to the Pope for permission to open the case. if the case is opened proof of a life of ‘heroic virtue’

must be shown, if enough evidence is collected and approved the case is then passed to the Pope. the fourth stage of the process is beautification. to achieve beautification, a miracle must be attributed to prayers made to the individual. Prayers being answered are seen as proof that the person is already in heaven, however, this requirement is waived for martyrs. once someone has been beautified they are given the title blessed.they must then have a second miracle attributed to them to become reach canonisation, the step to becoming a saint. Martyrs only need one verified miracle, post-beatification, to become a saint.

Shakira and Gerard Piqué announce split Colombian singer Shakira and Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué have announced that they are separating after nearly 12 years together. The couple, who have two children, made the announcement in a joint statement published by the news agency EFE. “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the wellbeing of our children, who are our highest priority, we request respect for our privacy. Thank you for your understanding,” the statement reads. The announcement comes as rumours circulated that Pique has been caught cheating and had left the family home some time ago. However, despite speculation in the Spanish press this has not been confirmed by either Shakira or Pique. Shakira and Piqué never tied the knot, arguing they did not need to get married. In 2019, the Colombian singer explained that they have an unconventional relationship. The last image of the couple together dates from October 2021, more than eight months ago. Although on the last 14th February, Shakira shared an image of the two on her Instagram account for Valentine’s Day. Over the years, their fortunes

News

have multiplied thanks to their business ventures. For example, in January 2021, the Barranquilla singer sold the rights to her 145 songs in an operation described by the industry as worth millions, while the soccer player has diversified his investments through his company, Kosmos Global Holding, and has become the main promoter of the Davis Cup tennis tournament, in addition to owning 90% of the Andorra Football Club. Their careers have not been

without controversy. At the end of May, the Barcelona High Court rejected the appeal filed by the singer and confirmed the court inquiry that had concluded that there were indications that she had defrauded the tax authorities of €14.5 million. There may still be a deal with the Prosecutor’s Office, but for the moment Shakira has not managed to get the case shelved and may have to go to trial. She faces six counts of tax crimes that could lead to a prison sentence.

Spanish clothing sales jump as shoppers return The owner of Zara has revealed a 36 percent jump in sales this spring as shoppers flood back to its high street outlets after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. Inditex, which also owns Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti and Bershka, said total sales rose to €6.7bn in the three months to 30th April as there was a “significant rebound in traffic” to stores that offset a 6 percent decline online. Pre-tax profits rose 82 percent to €990m and it said spring and summer ranges had been well received by shoppers. However, the temporary closure of stores in Russia and Ukraine led to a €216m charge on the business during the quarter. The company has about 500 stores in Russia, its second-largest market in terms of shops. The Spanish company said momentum had continued beyond April, with sales up 17 percent in the month to 5th June, well ahead of analysts’ expectations because it was now able to open 90 percent of its 6,423 stores worldwide. That sales growth came despite the group closing 335 stores in the past year. Óscar García Maceiras, the chief executive of Inditex, told analysts he expected prices to

rise by “mid-single digits” over the summer in markets affected by inflation. The group has also built up stocks of clothing to offset problems with global distribution networks. Inditex’s strong figures stand in stark contrast to online fast fashion specialists such as Boohoo, Missguided and Asos, which have been hit by stumbling sales growth as pandemic restrictions on high streets eased. Asos swung to a £15.8m pretax loss in the six months to the end of the February compared with a £106.4m profit a year earlier as sales in the UK grew by 8%.

Missguided has been bought out by the owner of Sports Direct after falling into administration as it struggled to cope with higher costs. Boohoo’s pre-tax profits fell 94% to £7.8m in the year to 28 February. Sales rose 14% to almost £2bn but growth was down from more than 40% in the previous year. Richard Chamberlain, a retail analyst at Royal Bank of Canada, said Inditex’s “high degree of relatively local sourcing, and its ability to offer fashion and newness to consumers in a downturn should allow its sales outperformance to widen in a recessionary environment”.

Restaurants in Spain forced to offer doggy bags Doggy bags must be offered to diners by Spanish restaurants under a new law to prevent food waste or they could face fines of up to 60,000 euros. The Spanish government passed a new draft law recently which aims to cut the amount of food thrown away every year and to make people more conscious of world hunger. “This is a pioneering legal instrument to prevent wastefulness in the food chain from producers to consumers which leads to financial losses and impacts on the environment,” Luis Planas, the agriculture minister, told a press conference. “In a world where unfortunately hunger and malnutrition still exist, these are things which weigh on everyone’s conscience.” Restaurants, hotels or bars must offer free containers to take food or drinks away if diners cannot finish their meals. At present, this is not a common practice in Spain. Supermarkets must offer unsold foodstuffs when it is approaching its best by date to charities or food banks. NGOs must reach deals with stores so that the food is traceable in order to guarantee consumer safety.

SUMMeR ReCiPeS CARROT AND SESAME BURGERS

Fancy a change from meat for your summer barbeque? Try these tasty carrot and sesame burgers, packed with protein and low in fat.

Ingredients

Unsold fruit could be used to make juice or jams or, if other food is not fit for human consumption, it could be used for feeding animals. Alternatively, food could be put on compost pits. The law will not imply a loss for businesses, as the food would have been thrown away anyway. Any companies which fail to comply with the new legislation could face fines of between 2,000 euros to up to 60,000 euros for serious offenders which refuse to give food to social projects. Repeat offenders could face fines of up to 500,000 euros. Spain’s population of 47 million people wasted 1.3 million tonnes of food – or 31kg

per person – in 2020, according to Ministry of Agriculture figures. About 40 per cent of food is wasted in supermarkets and restaurants while 20 per cent is thrown away at home. The government wants food companies to change “best by” labels so that they allow consumption up to the limit when the food is safe to eat and not encourage its disposal earlier, which can waste perfectly edible food. In line with objectives set out by the United Nations, the European Union aims to reduce food waste by half by consumers and companies by 2030. The Spanish law must pass through the parliament before it is passed and probably comes into force early next year.

750g carrots , peeled and grated 410g can chickpeas , drained and rinsed 1 small onion , roughly chopped 2 tbsp tahini paste , plus 1 tsp to serve 1 tsp ground cumin 1 egg (or an egg replacement such as flax or chia) 3 tbsp olive oil 100g wholemeal breadcrumbs zest 1 lemon , plus 1 tsp juice 150ml pot natural yogurt (either traditional or plant based) 6 buns, rocket leaves, sliced

red onion, sliced avocado and chilli sauce, to serve 3 tbsp sesame seeds

Method

STEP 1 Put a third of the grated carrot in a food processor with the chickpeas, onion, 2 tbsp tahini, cumin and egg. Whizz to a thick paste, then scrape into a large bowl. Heat 1 tbsp oil in your largest frying pan, tip in the remaining carrot and cook for 8-10 mins, stirring until the carrot is softened – it will become more golden as it is cooked. Add this cooked carrot to the whizzed paste with the breadcrumbs, lemon zest and sesame seeds. Add seasoning, then mix together well with your hands.

STEP 2 Divide the mixture into 6, then using wet hands shape into burgers. Cover and chill until serving. Mix the yogurt with the remaining tahini and lemon juice, then chill. STEP 3 Fire up the barbecue, or heat a non-stick frying pan and brush the burgers with the remaining oil. Cook the burgers for 5 mins on each side, until golden and crisp. Meanwhile warm or toast the buns (or sit them on the barbecue alongside the burgers). When the burgers are ready, spread each bun with some of the lemony sesame yogurt, add the avocado, top with the burger, onion and rocket. Finish with a drizzle of chilli sauce.

My neighbour was diagnosed with early dementia. Since then, she has been relying on me as her daily life became more difficult. At first I didn’t mind helping out, as it wasn’t too much trouble, and I wanted to be a good friend and neighbour. Her sons came over for a holiday, and asked me to keep an eye on her, but recently her condition has got much worse. I am finding it very taxing - she calls me every time she needs something. It’s becoming that she will ring me in the middle of the night because she can’t find keys, or wants a smoke or something. I have to lock her in at night as it is, because she

CostaBlancaPeople 14th - 20th June 2022

has gone wandering around the streets. No matter how much I leave everything in order when I leave, she will find a reason to call me back. I am exhausted. I have telephoned her sons, but all they say is there is nothing they can do from their end. It sounds like the time has come for you to hand over the responsibility and get more professional help in. Speak to a care agency (I am recommending one), and discuss a way forward; they will deal with the lady’s sons and you can come right away from the problem. You tell me that you want to move away in any case, to be nearer to your family and

that this situation is preventing you from doing so. Your health is also suffering as a result. Once you have arranged things for your neighbour, you must book your flight, and proceed with your plans.

Research into falling sperm counts finds ‘alarming’ levels of chemicals in males Scientists researching the cause of falling sperm counts found alarming levels of chemicals known to impact fertility. A study of urine samples from nearly 100 male volunteers has uncovered “alarming” levels of endocrine disruptors known to reduce human fertility. Cocktails of chemicals such as bisphenols and dioxins, which are believed to interfere with hormones and affect

sperm quality, were present at levels up to 100 times those considered safe. The average exposure to these chemicals was 17 times the levels deemed acceptable. Sperm quantity and quality have dramatically declined across Western countries in recent decades, with research suggesting sperm counts have been more than halved in the space of 40 years.

Slow Down to Save Fuel The energy crisis we are currently experiencing brings us closer to the possibility of once again seeing the lowering the maximum permitted speed limit on motorways from 120 to 110 kilometres per hour. This is one of the options currently being considered by the Spanish Government, among other solutions. Some areas, such as around Catalonia, there are calls to make this reduction permanent on the grounds of safety, after some motorways have seen an increase in the number of collisions and incidents since tolls were removed. However, safety aside, when it comes to fuel, according to some experts, significant savings in are achieved when we reduce our speed. Even though the government has yet to make a decision on this, they too are saying that it is a good idea now, and should be encouraged, since driving at 110 kilometres per hour instead of 120 saves 9% on fuel. All drivers will now that in recent weeks the price of petrol and diesel have experienced a significant increase in their prices and have reached historical maximums, something which we believe is set to continue for some time yet, with prices set to increase even more over the next few weeks. It might be obvious, but pressing the accelerator sends fuel into the combustion chamber to increase power and speed. Although it is a normal process in a vehicle. The more we press that accelerator, the more fuel is sent to the engine, and therefore, as more is used, our costs increase. If we take 1 year or 15,000 kilometres as a reference, a car with moderate

consumption will take approximately 1,000 euro out of the owner’s wallet. However, this figure can be much higher if we drive aggressively and do not take into account other factors that can harm the efficient performance of the vehicle. If we drive in the correct gears, avoid accelerating too harshly, and slow down just a little, we can make significant savings. There are other tips we can keep in mind too. The Government is trying to ease the pressure with the discount of at least 20 cents per litre, but as this discount is not

indicated on the main price display, it is not always easy to work out the final price. It is worth keeping an eye on the advertised price on a regular basis. In the past, at certain gas stations, it was sometimes the case that refuelling on a Monday was cheaper, but as prices are not fluctuating at the moment, and only seem to be increasing, this is not really a factor anymore. Make sure you don’t keep the engine running unnecessarily. Sometimes we do not know how long our vehicle will remain stopped, but if the period is greater than two minutes, it is better to turn the engine off to prevent the engine and air conditioning from consuming fuel. There are of course

some vehicles that suspend the engine automatically in situations of total stop; keeping other car functions active, thus providing fuel savings and reducing emissions. Don’t overload your car. If you are carrying around lots of unnecessary items in the boot, take them out. If our car is heavier, the effort of the engine to move it will be greater and, therefore, the cost of fuel will be considerably higher. On the other hand, a common mistake is to supply accessories that do not meet the vehicle’s specifications in terms of weight and dimensions. It is advisable to equip your vehicle with only original accessories. Check your tyre pressure regularly. It is essential to keep tyre pressure at the correct level. This will provide greater safety by increasing traction and reducing the probability of punctures, which will also improve fuel consumption (because the resistance of the wheels will be less). Due to this, it is ideal that you get advice on the recommendations to calibrate the wheels according to the specific use of your car. There are a number of websites and apps available to monitor local fuel prices, although a simple tool is also available in Google Maps. This allows you to monitor local fuel prices in real time, although, as we mentioned earlier, the prices are pre-discount, so not always easy to work out the end price. Whether the Government do decide to enforce a reduction in speed limits is something we will just have to wait and see at this time, but using these tips, we can save a little bit, which will hopefully ease the burden of rising fuel prices.

Carrying Your Shopping on the Back Seat Can Result in a Fine Carrying your shopping on the back seat of the car is never a good idea. In the event of a collision, or even sudden braking, the items can become projectiles and shoot forward, causing any amount of personal or material damage. That is why, according to the DGT, leaving loose packages in the rear seats of the vehicle can lead to a fine of 200 euro, which includes your supermarket purchases, which many people, oblivious

to the danger, do on a daily basis. This infraction is reflected in article 14 of the General Traffic Regulations (RGC). It says that the cargo transported in a vehicle must not “drag, fall totally or partially or move in a dangerous way.” In that same section it is specified that the load cannot “compromise the stability of the vehicle” or it can involve a fine of 200 euro. That is the reason why whatever you are transporting in your vehicle, it must

be secure. The boot is the best place for carrying goods of course, although you can also benefit, at times, from a mesh in some vehicles. In the most simple of terms, everything you carry in your vehicle must be secure. Similarly, during the summer months in particular, we often see passengercarrying vehicles overloaded with items for that exciting day out at the beach, perhaps. This can also lead to a fine, as your vehicle cannot be overloaded, not only for the considerations of weight and stability, but limiting mobility or hindering the driver’s vision also carries a fine of 200 euro. This is what the regulation says: «The driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain their own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and permanent attention to driving, which guarantee their own safety, that of the rest of the occupants of the vehicle and that of other road users. For these purposes, you must take special care to maintain the proper position and that the rest of the passengers maintain it, and the proper placement of the objects or animals transported so that there is no interference between the driver and any of them ». For the reasons of “maintain the proper position”, you must also be seated correctly in the vehicle. Just having an arm out of the car can be seen as failure to maintain that proper position, as, quite clearly, it is the case when you see passengers with their feet up on the dashboard. In addition, carrying a heavily loaded car also carries other risks, such as an object falling onto the road. The fine for this amounts to 500 euro, since it poses a danger to other users.

what neurology services are offered at Quirónsalud to address neurological disorders?

Addressing neurological diseases in a rapid and multidisciplinary manner is already a reality in the Advanced Neurosciences Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja and the specialty centres of the Alicante province. These centres of healthcare excellence have developed healthcare based on a people centreed care model, with a comprehensive structure and the establishment of ‘fast care’ channels. The Advanced Neuroscience Unit is based on a radically innovative concept in terms of patient care. Dr. Erika Torres, director of this unique project, has devised, together with the rest of the participants, a model where the entire structure revolves around the patient, their families, their needs and concerns, addressing neurological disorders in a comprehensive and personalized manner. The Unit is made up of a first-class multidisciplinary team and state-ofthe-art technological equipment such as Flow Dynamics Magnetic Resonance Imaging and brain CT with perfusion. Memory and cognitive disorders department Dr. Erika Torres, specialist in Neurology, and neuropsychologist Miguel Sánchez Barredo, responsible for the Memory and Cognitive Disorders Programme at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, highlighted the importance of being thorough in diagnosing patients with dementia. It is estimated that 10% of people who are initially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease have chronic adult hydrocephalus. Quirónsalud has launched a Memory and Cognitive Disorders Programme

for a more accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of patients suffering from dementia disorders and diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. The main objective of the new unit is to study the patient from the multiple angles that the disease presents in order to establish a rigorous diagnosis. It should be noted that few centres in Spain are equipped with a multidisciplinary team as comprehensive as the one that Quirónsalud has, which works with the aim of detecting early cases of the disease to allow early intervention. Movement disorders department Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative pathology and is second in frequency after Alzheimer’s disease. The increase in life expectancy with the respective aging of the population means that its prevalence is increasing rapidly. According to Dr. Erika Torres, head of the Movement Disorders Programme at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Quirónsalud Alicante Hospitals, “it is a disease that manifests itself in most cases with tremor, and always with slow movements and stiffness. As it progresses, it ends up affecting normal abilities such as walking and in some cases dementia can develop.” Some of the treatments for Advanced Parkinson’s Disease consist of Apomorphine with pen administration, infusion pump or Parkinson’s surgery. Minimally invasive endoscopic surgery for brain tumours and spine Brain endoscopy or neuroendoscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows rapid access to the cranial cavity through small cranial holes, thus

avoiding the need for large openings and retractions of the brain tissue. Interventional neuroradiology area The Interventional Neuroradiology Department treats the following pathologies: • Brain aneurysms • Chronic Subdural Hematoma • Arterio-venous malformations • Carotid Atheromatous Stenosis • Vertebral Fractures Headache department Headache is the most frequent reason for consultation in the neurology department. Experts say it is essential to carry out early diagnosis and adequate treatment, to avoid the worsening of the condition and any subsequent decrease in the quality of life of the patient. Treatments include botulinum toxin, infiltration with anaesthesia or the use of radiofrequency. For episodic and chronic migraine there are new preventive treatments such as monoclonal drugs (anti-CGRP) applied monthly or quarterly by a prefilled pen that is easy for the patient to use. Neuroradiology State-of-the-art neuroradiology is a key element in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological pathologies. Quirónsalud has Digital Magnetic Resonance, which facilitates a more precise and accurate diagnosis of injuries and pathologies of the spine and skull. CT scans allow studies with high resolution images of the skull and spine to be carried out. Neuro-rehabilitation department Neuro-rehabilitation is the process aimed at reducing the deficiency, the

limitation of activity and the restriction of participation suffered by people as a result of a neurological disease, and where the professionals involved in this area have the objective of reducing the degree of functional impairment of the patient. The neuro-rehabilitation service therefore has two units to cover the stages of evolution of the neurological patient (inpatient unit and outpatient unit). Neuropsychology department The role of the neuropsychologist is essential for the early detection of cognitive impairment, given that through the tools and knowledge, experts can identify those patients whose cognitive impairment is more likely to evolve into dementia or major neurocognitive disorder. Neurophysiology department Neurophysiology has as its object the functional exploration of the nervous system, using techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), polysomnography (PSG), evoked potentials and transcranial magnetic stimulation, for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes. Dr. Esteban De Vicente ÁlvarezManzaneda, head of the Neurophysiology Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Quirónsalud Alicante, explains that “transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells

in the brain with in order to improve the symptoms of pathologies such as stroke, severe depression refractory to other treatments, tinnitus and chronic pain”. Maxillofacial surgery department The causes of a temporomandibular dysfunction are very varied. When the dysfunction worsens, symptoms can become very noticeable and even disabling, making it difficult to speak, chew and swallow. Its correct diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment by the maxillofacial surgery, rehabilitation and dentistry service usually resolves the condition, avoiding surgery in most cases. Therapeutic options Botulinum toxin treatment, Michigantype discharge splint treatment, rehabilitation treatment where physiotherapists apply techniques to treat TMJ dysfunctions, and TMJ surgery are used. Neurological nursing Nursing in the Neuroscience Unit represents a key figure for being in direct contact with the patient’s needs on a daily basis. Being its highly valued role due to its proximity and the transfer of information as an intermediary with the neurologist and other specialists. The objective of nursing is aimed at knowing the needs of the neurological patient and providing individualized advice based on direct and continuous contact, establishing bonds of support and trust between the nurse-patient.

Not important for the Average Lap race format used. Shoestring Dos (Brian Murray/Diane Hardwick), third Shoestring Omega (Kerry Marlow/Tug Wilson). Race 2. Wind 3.5 knots E. A fantastic start from the off with all boats clearing the line within 48seconds, the best we’ve seen for ages, they all looked very professional. Again there was some very close racing between similar boats. The two Sailfish were neck and neck for a time, there was a very close battle between Shoestring Dos and Omega and the two Shoestring Gambas (Uno and Cuatro) were also close. Boats were continually changing tactics all trying to get up the inside of each other approaching the start/finishing line to get ahead and steal the wind on the downwind leg and improve their places on each lap. Good fair racing with very few seconds between boats, especially the first four, once the results were calculated. England are a tough watch, aren’t they? Don’t get me wrong - I have no issue with keeping it tight in tournament football, that’s better than getting spanked in the knockout games like we’ve all seen too often. But can we not bring just a little joy to these pointless Nations League matches, Gareth? Of course, Southgate will point to the fact that you don’t go to Germany away and play fantasy football picking Mount, Grealish, Sako and Foden behind Harry Kane. I’ll accept that, to a point. And then he’ll tell us that England did actually dominate the ball against the most inexperienced Italy side in history before being candidly honest that they need to be better in the final third. That’s the thing with Southgate - he does actually tell you what we can all see. And he does have a point that you can’t just bundle all the attackers into the pitch and hope it works. And, yes another and, he does have a decent record whether it’s always glorious to watch or not. What’s the big gripe with Gareth? Oh yes, he got tactically out-witted in a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final. Let’s completely overlook the fact he got us there when other allegedly superior managers missed by a mile and call him out for losing to slightly better coaches or players at the crunch. Boo hoo. But, we did learn something from these last two end-of-season, squeeze them in, bolt-on fixtures. As Gareth said, we do rely a bit too much on Harry and Raheem to score the goals. Kane got his 50th in an England shirt with a late penalty equaliser against the Germans and Sterling didn’t really look like scoring on Sunday night at Molineux no matter how much the kids screeched for him to do so. Also, Jack Grealish looks like a better option off the bench. He might say

he gets more freedom playing with England but he looks like a player that is being coached out of being the game-changer he was when playing for Aston Villa. We have enough clever attacking midfielders who can link the game - we don’t need another Phil Foden type to be manufactured. It’s also clear that Tomori is certainly no worse than Harry Maguire at the back and given he’s just won Serie A with AC Milan, surely he deserves a decent run in the side rather than Maguire who finds touch more often than Owen Farrell. Can Aaron Ramsdale push Jordan Pickford for the number one spot before Qatar? Sunday night suggests so. But if there is one true challenge for Southgate ahead of Qatar it is how to get Jude Bellingham in the side in a way that gets the best out of him without sacrificing what we do need in the middle of the park - security. And that is what Phillips and Rice do actually give us. Anyhoo, the rest of the internationals were rubbish and I really don’t care if Ireland beat Scotland 3-0. They are both still very, very average teams. Five substitutes are to be a permanent thing next season which is great news for new Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag who will be able to change half his team each match as they will still be rubbish. Frankie de Jong had a good old

laugh when asked if he was joining United this summer. Whether he was laughing at the mere idea of having to give up Champions League football has not been confirmed. If they cannot get Frenkie, United would like Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund - after all, their last signing from there for big money tore the place up, didn’t he? Also on Ten Hag’s shopping list is Bayern Munich wantaway striker Robin Lewandowski. I mean, why find the next Lewa for much less outlay than get the old, nearly done one, right? Whoa, hang on - a borderline intelligent transfer link to United here. Granted, not very creative given he’s a former Ten Hag player from Ajax but winger Antony could be an actual decent Old Trafford signing. Liverpool are doing it right, as always. 30+ Sadio Mane is off to Bayern Munich so they are moving for young up-and-coming and very talented indeed Darwin Nunez from Benfica. He’ll cost 65 million big ones but will probably be worth every penny. Minamino will be off to Monaco or Wolves for much more than the £7.5m Liverpool paid for him to offset some of that Nunez spend - proper business, you know? Talking of bad business, Chelsea are hoping to return Romelu Lukaku to Inter. They kept the receipt and everything.

Sliders versus the Stray Sod Golf tournament

Two local bars recently competed in a golf day competition, in aid of Help at Home Costa Blanca. Thirty-six golfers divided into teams from Sliders, El Galan and the Stray Sod, La Fuente Centre played La Finca Golf course, with Sliders winning the overall tournament 6-4. The day raised 100€ for local charity Help at Home, which will use the money to help fund its range of community services including: respite care, shopping services, companionship, advice on Spanish social services and mobility equipment. The owner of Sliders, Mark, already supports the charity by providing its local ‘meals on wheels’ delivery service and organised the golf day to give

the coffers an extra boost. The day proved such a success

that the return match is already being planned.

Antonio Conte hasn’t realised that Richarlison is only good for the first three months of a season then disappears. He’d like to take him to Tottenham, probably liking the fact that he picks fights in training with teammates. Rather than try and find a better leftback, Eddie Howe has decided to make Matty Targett’s loan move from Villa permanent. He would also like the Italian Peter Crouch - Gianluca Scamacca could be on his way to the Toon - and, continuing his love of a good Italian takeaway, Nicola Zaniola from Roma. Brentford, a club that rarely gets it wrong, would like Bologna’s Scottish football Aaron Hickey to join them. Bologna would rather flog him to Arsenal for an inflated fee because it’s Arsenal. One player likely to leave Thomas Frank’s busom is Christian Eriksen - he fancies a step up now he’s proven he isn’t going to die each time he plays and could be off to Spurs or United. Fulham think Bernd Leno is the guy they’d like to watch make save after save in their failed attempt to stay in the Premier League next season. Finally, whack the Poch down as the favourite for any Premier League job from Everton upwards next season he’s been given the boot by PSG and will be replaced by Zinedine Zidane, apparently.
