Employment at record high the province of Alicante saw the creation of 8,243 new jobs in June as the region breaks its employment record again. the local labour market is still enjoying record figures with the recent acceleration of economic activity, and the start of the tourist

season in particular. the creation of 8,243 new jobs in the province in June places the total number of employed in the area at 713,834, which is a new historical maximum employment figure. the number of employed workers

already exceeds pre-pandemic figures - in June 2019 the number of employed was 676,262. the rate of progress of job creation has slowed down somewhat compared to previous months, since in April, coinciding with easter and the end of restrictions on foreign tourism, 10,235 jobs were created, and in May they were 9,156 new positions. Figures are lower than those registered in June of last year, in which Social Security accounted for 14,188 newly employed persons, although it must be taken into account that the figures for June 2021 followed a lengthy period of layoffs due to covid. in any case, the 713,834 current employees means that never before have there been so many people working in the province as today. on the registered unemployment

side, the number of unemployed registered in the offices of the Valencian employment service, labora, fell by 2,139 people, to stand at 141,283, which is 33,443 less than in the same month last year. the fact that registered unemployment fell less than the volume of employment created is due to the fact that not all the people who find work were registered with labora, since many unemployed people stop renewing their registration when benefits end. By sectors, as expected, the greatest reduction in unemployment occurred in services, including tourism and hospitality, which are the activities that grew the most. however, unemployment also fell in industry (-364) and, to a lesser extent, in construction (-78) and among the group of those seeking their first job

(-10). Permanent contracts once again outnumber temporary ones, despite the seasonal nature of many jobs at this time. According to data from the Ministry of labour, up to 56.4% of the 61,782 employment contracts signed in Alicante during the month of June were indefinite, which is 12 percent more than the national average. if the data is compared with that of June last year, the number of permanent contracts has multiplied by more than six, while temporary contracts have been reduced by half.

Four Torrevieja police officers accused of bribery A jury trial takes place this week of six people – four of them officers from torrevieja’s local Police force. the six are accused of bribery by requesting money from owners of hospitality businesses in exchange for e l i m i n a t i n g inspection records that, supposedly, were previously filed by the officers. According to the record, between August and September 2017, the defendants went to two establishments, where they spent several minutes writing up reports for administrative complaints. next, the rest of those accused went to the same businesses, acting in collusion with the agents, to pose as an intermediary and asked the victims for varying amounts of money - between 1,000 and 40,000 euros - in exchange for the police

officers eliminating the complaints. the holding of the oral hearing in elche Court was scheduled for March but in the end was postponed until July. the defendants, according to the Guardia Civil investigation, were “perfectly organized, and each one had a different role within the structure.” Some of them carried out inspections in businesses, issuing complaint reports or warning the business owners of alleged irregularities. After the complaint or warning, other members of the organization came into play, acting as though they were friends with local police officers, and promised the victims to put them in contact with the officers to mediate the issue. two of the agents entered preventive detention for a few months and are still active in the local Police.

Hospitals begin making beds available in preparation for ‘summer wave’ of covid hopsitals in the Valencian community are working alongside the Ministry of health to ensure adequate resources are in place this summer as the country faces what’s being dubbed as the ‘summer wave’ of covid. health workers’ summer holidays and those on sick leave are also threatening hospital bed availability. to tackle the summer wave, health authorities are allowing hospital staff who take their annual leave outside of the summer months some incentives, in the form of extra days and paid overtime. Four hospitals in the Alicante province had planned to close off more than 200 for July and use the staff of those areas to replace colleagues who are going on holiday. however, the arrival of a new wave of covid infections has forced at least two hospitals to change their plans. At Alicante General hospital, 117 beds across four wards and resuscitation were due to be blocked off from Friday. however, according to union sources from the hospital, these plans will be pushed back by fifteen days since the hospital is completely full of patients and with 80 covid patients occupying beds. there are also a good number of workers on sick leave due to the virus, which is making things

very difficult, said unions. Managers reached out to workers who had planned to take leave in July to ask them to voluntarily change their plans, offering incentives. one such message said. “Currently we have units without staff to start the month of July. i hope you understand the severity of the situation and why we have considered proposing this collaboration to you.”

in hospital de Sant Joan, 36 beds in one ward were going to be closed so that the hospital could carry out maintenance works. however, unions say these beds will remain open. A total of 46 covid patients currently occupy a ward and a half at Sant Joan, a situation which could become more complicated in high summer as the area’s population

multiplies with visitors from inland and overseas. elche General hospital also plans to close 15 beds in the maternity ward and elda will close 45 beds across various services, according to information from the CCoo union. in the province of Alicante 347 people are currently hospitalised due to coronavirus and the incidence of the disease among those over 60 years of age is increasing exponentially. Friday’s update from the Ministry of health, officials placed placed the accumulated incidence at 715 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than 200 places above the previous Friday. health officials are keen to stress that as much as the virus has lost severity, the fact remains that the more people infected, the more hospital admissions, so it is expected that hospitalizations will continue to increase in the coming days. the funds that the Ministry of health has provided to hire substitute workers this summer for holiday cover and sick leave only serves to cover 30% of the staff who have holidays planned. of the 7,357 professionals who are going to be hired throughout the Valencian Community, 11.55% are doctors, 34.98% to nurses, 23.34% are care technicians and nursing assistants.

Buyers beware: Fines for buying ‘fake’ goods in Torrevieja

Crazy Urban Festival launches contest for aspiring artists

the forthcoming Crazy urban Festival, set to take place in torrevieja this summer, has launched a competition that offers aspiring artists to perform alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. A preselection of the 10 most outstanding performers will be chosen and, later, two winners will be selected to perform at the festival, one chosen by the jury of the Crazyurban Festival and the other via social networks. A report this week indicates that torrevieja town hall is prepared to fine people who buy goods from the ‘looky looky’ men on the seafront. the ‘blanket men’ as they are also known (as they set their shops out on a blanket in order to be able to make a quick escape if the police come along) sell a myriad of designer knockoffs including imitation designer handbags, footwear and clothing. A new ordinance approved last week by the town hall will allow officials to fine buyers up to €750. the fine can also be issued to anyone who warns the looky looky men about the presence or approach of the police or who is seen to be helping the illegal vendors to ply their trade. the regulations are based on the lack of municipal authorization for the sale, and not on the fact that the products, in most cases, are fake sports or clothing brands. Approved on thursday, it will become operational once it is published in the official bulletin of the province and in its provisions it states that it tries to protect “health, the rational and orderly use of public roads and the safeguarding of public security, in addition, where appropriate, of the protection of industrial and intellectual property, fair competition in the market economy and the rights of consumers and users”. the recently approved ordinance states that it is prohibited to collaborate “in the public space with unauthorized street vendors with actions such as

facilitating the genre or monitoring and alerting about the presence of law enforcement agents” as well as the purchase of products. it speaks of food and beverages and “other products”, without expressly alluding to clothing, footwear and bags. its approval comes when the sale of unlicensed products on the Paseo de Juan Aparicio is again occupying a large part of the public space from half past eight in the evening until after eleven at night. the large space taken up by the blanket men and their goods already causes an issue with passers-by who hardly have space to walk between the bars and the edge of the promenade. local residents and business owners say that the position of the blanket men causes a huge issue because buyers

stop to look at the products at one of the busiest sections of the promenade, causing a massive ‘traffic jam’ of people most evenings. the presence of local Police and Guardia Civil in the area is limited, and while patrols regularly check the promenade, as soon as the authorities are spotted, the blankets are gathered and the sellers move away until the police have gone. As soon as the police are out of sight, the sellers set up shop once more. Councillor for police and security, Federico Alarcón explained that the eradication of this activity is very complicated and that he does not know of any municipality that has achieved it, much less a tourist area like torrevieja.

80% of vehicles that pass Elche Local Police radars exceed the speed limit 80% of vehicles that have passed through a speed traps in elche this year have been exceeding the speed limit. Specifically, in twenty speed checkpoints, officers clocked 4,600 vehicles, and of these, 3,693 exceeded the maximum speed. the road from Perleta to Balsares has been one of the last points, with sections limited to 50 kilometres per hour, where the agents of the Road Safety unit have

been stationed, after public concern about the passage of cars that press the accelerator too hard. on one stretch of road in particular (from Perleta to Balsares), there are sections of the road where the limit is 50km/h and residents had voiced concerns about excessive speed. local police mounted a speed trap over three consecutive days. of 862 vehicles clocked, 657 far exceeded the permitted speed. officers placed

Two new transformers to improve the quality of the electricity supply in Orihuela Costa As a result of an agreement reached between Ángel noguera, Councillor for infrastructure of orihuela City Council, and those responsible for i-de, the distribution company of the iberdrola electricity supply group, two transformers have been installed to improve service in Aguamarina and Cabo Roig. i-de completed the work to improve the electricity supply around busy Aguamarina and Cabo Roig in orihuela Costa. the works, which involved an investment of more than 400,000 euro, consisted of the installation of two new transformers and approximately one kilometre of new medium and low voltage underground lines that will allow an improvement in the quality of the electricity supply of the area by using more advanced and environmentally friendly technologies, and meeting the growth in energy demand forecast for the coming years by having increased capacity in the area. Begoña Albentosa, head of the South Alicante sector of i-de in the province of Alicante, said “these actions are added

to those that the company has carried out in recent years both in the historic centre of the city and in the beach area, which have allowed improving the quality of service in orihuela by equipping it with better electrical installations.” Ángel noguera, Councillor for infrastructure, considers that the conversations held with iberdrola have been satisfactory “the needs to improve the service have been heard and i want to thank those responsible at iberdrola for their understanding in providing a solution to the residents’ demands. We are working to improve the situation in other parts of the municipality.”

a speed radar three days in a row and found that the first day there were 88% infractions; the second, 78% and the third, 63%. this goes to show, according to the Road Safety officer, José Sánchez, that this type of action is necessary. the traffic on roads across the province has increased with the arrival of summer, which raises the demands from residents for greater police surveillance in order to dissuade those

who go too fast and cause accidents. A similar situation is seen in Santa Pola. in one of the last speed traps carried out by the local Police on the Camino Viejo, 128 vehicles were clocked over a course of just 40 minutes, of which 115 exceeded the limit of 40 kilometres per hour that is allowed at the residential area. the Road Safety unit is also concerned about Avenida Adolfo Suárez, near Vinalopó hospital. on this

road, with two lanes in each direction, there is a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour. 96% of the vehicles that went through a radar here were exceeding the speed limit, despite the fact that the road is well signposted and has several pedestrian crossings. drivers were clocked here doing 105 kilometres per hour, while the average speed along the 30km/h stretch was actually 57 kilometres per hour.

Firefighters Sleeper hold robbery attacks rescue a young woman after she passed out while hiking in Guadalest the woman, of French nationality, had to be transferred by helicopter, although her condition initially did not seem serious. on Sunday, officers of the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium rescued a young woman who had suffered a fainting spell while hiking in el Castell de Guadalest. the complicated access and the fact that the woman had lost consciousness led to the rescue being carried out by helicopter. As reported by firefighters, the incident occurred at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. the rescued woman, a 25-yearold French tourist, was hiking in the company of another person in the vicinity of the Guadalest reservoir, approximately at the foot of the castle, when she fainted. Since she had lost consciousness, it has decided to mobilize the mountain rescue group (GeR) and the Alpha 01 helicopter. the young woman was transferred by helicopter to San Vicente del Raspeig, where an ambulance was ready to take her to a health centre. it is not believed that her condition was particularly serious and reports indicate she did not suffer any other injuries resulting from the incident.

A young man was hospitalised at the weekend after being put in a sleeper hold by a gang of thieves. the 19 year old lost consciousness, remaining in a coma for just under an hour, and remains in hospital in Alicante. the incident took place at around 3am on Sunday morning when the teenager was set upon by a group of young individuals police say were of north African origin and were very violent. the sleeper hold is a strangulation method in which the attacker puts his arm around the victim’s neck, pressing the jugular until he becomes unconscious in just a few moments, as oxygen does not reach the brain. it is used, as in this case, by thieves who take advantage of the victim’s inability to react to steal their belongings. there have also been cases in which this form of attack has been used to carry out sexual assaults, which happened just a month ago with a young woman

who was partying in the old town of Alicante. in the case that occurred this weekend, the attackers stole the boy’s mobile phone and credit cards. those close to the victim indicated that, when going to file a police report, the national Police told him that during the past hogueras festivities there were two other similar attacks, in which the victims had also been two young men, between the ages of 20 and 30 years. For this reason, speculation is rife that the attackers could have been the same gang, although there is no official data to support the theory. After the attack, the young man remained unconscious for over 45 minutes. he was transferred to the Sant Joan d’Alacant hospital, where he remains hospitalized. his family has expressed concern that the attack may have caused some neurological damage, given the time he remained unconscious.

Two fugitives arrested in the province for drug trafficking and attempted murder those arrested are of British and dutch nationality, respectively, and were captured by the same team of Guardia Civil operaties, although the two fugitives are not linked. Both arrests were made in the Alicante province – one in Benidorm and one in l’Alfàs del Pi. the first, l.J.e, 43 years old and of British nationality, was arrested in Benidorm. l.J.e, is considered by the British authorities as the leader of a criminal organization, heavily in volved in the distribution and sale of cocaine in a large area of southern england. the investigation into the British fugitive by Guardia Civil was prompted by the CrimeStoppers platform, in which Spain’s Ministry of the interior alongside the British authorities launched a campaign to locate several wanted people with pending cases in the united Kingdom. While primary investigations into the location of the 43 year old Briton were activated in the province of Malaga, the investigation followed by officers took them to the province of Alicante, where had indications of the presence of the fugitive, reinforced by intel on the imminent travel of relatives of the fugitive to the area,

with information as a result of the close collaboration of the Guardia Civil with the British national Crime Agency. After close surveillance of the family group, the investigation focused on a hotel in Benidorm where l.J.e. was found and arrested. on the other hand, in separate operation, the same team of investigators managed to arrest C.K., a 35-year-old dutch citizen, wanted by the dutch authorities for attempted murder. According to information provided by the dutch police, C.K opened fire on several people as a result of a settling of scores between rival gangs, seriously injuring two of them. the rapid collaboration between the dutch police and Guardia Civil made it possible to locate this person in the province of Alicante, where it was confirmed that this same person had already been arrested on three occasions with different identities, none of them real, the first two times in Alicante and the third in Barcelona. Surveillance of the fugitive found that he was already using a fourth false identity. he was promptly located and arrested in the Alicante municipality of l’Alfàs del Pi just after arriving from Barcelona.

Torrevieja U3A Summer break the last week of June proved to be a busy one for the torrevieja u3A as the Monday saw the last monthly meeting being held at the CMo building in torrevieja until the Association restarts its activities in September. the June meeting kicked off with an interesting talk on the history of torrevieja which was given by Brad, from tour Costas. the talk was very informative and a lot of queries about torrevieja were explained. this was followed by a guitar recital by local musician James Greenall, with a Menu del dia afterwards for some of the attendees. the Current Affairs and discussion group (CAd) met up at la Zenia hotel for a lively debate which was followed up by 23 of the members and partners reassembling at Meson del Prado restaurant in San Miguel where they partook of an enjoyable ‘end of season’ luncheon. despite this the group will however, continue to meet up for the next two weeks! the first meeting will be by Zoom to allow those members that are currently in their homelands to participate from the comfort of their homes with the final meeting being a ‘live’ meeting back at the hotel.

the u3A is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community—those in their third ‘age’ of life. u3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one’s life (the third age) after the second age of fulltime employment and parental responsibility. Anyone can join torrevieja u3A and this includes people who are working part time. there is no lower age for membership. the torrevieja u3A is a learning co-operative which draws upon the knowledge and skills of its own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the

wishes of the membership. the association encourages and enables members to help each other share their knowledge, skills and experience to celebrate the capabilities and potential of its members and their value to society. Group activities offer the chance to enjoy life, meet new friends and study many different subjects in varied fields. there is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained - the approach to learning is “learning for pleasure”. Fuller details of the torrevieja u3A activities plus details on how to join the association, can be found on our website torreviajau3a.org.

Over 1000 people celebrate Transport to invest €7.3 million to improve ‘Urban day’ in Torrevieja stretch of the A-7 transport authorities are investing €7.3 million to improve the road surface of a 26 kilometre stretch of the A-7 between el Campello, Alicante and elche. the Ministry of transport and Mobility and urban Agenda, through the State land transport infrastructure Society (Seitt), this week began conservation and improvement works on the surface of the Alicante Ring Road along sections of the A-7 elche-Crevillent and Camino de Castilla, and the n-332 variant at el Campello and Alicante. the total execution budget exceeds 7.34 million euros (VAt included). the A-7 has an average of more than 50,000 vehicles per day, but in some sections, for example the sector between the access to San Vicente del Raspeig and the university of Alicante and the link with the A-31, at Mercalicante, this figure reaches one hundred thousand. not even the covid pandemic, which reduced traffic throughout Spain, alleviated traffic much along the A-7. in

July 2019, that section of road had 101,617 vehicles per day. during the same month of 2020 there were 88,915. the road works, which are expected to last around seven months, includes the resurfacing of more than 26 kilometres of motorway around the city of Alicante. the section is one of the most saturated in the province. Although the road works make it necessary to cut one lane of traffic, the work is being carried out at night from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday. the works are part of an overall

road improvement project that Seitt plans to execute between 2021 and 2025 which is valued at up to 280 million euros (VAt included). the plan also includes actions for the adaptation of several tunnels to the new regulations and the renovation or improvement of structures, signalling, beacons, systems and lighting. the A-70 is the main toll-free ring road in the city of Alicante. it handles the greatest volume of traffic and connects the cities of elche and Alicante, and is also a connection axis with other key points in the province as well as with Murcia.

torrevieja’s Antonio Soria Park was the location of a series of alternative style events as part of the celebration of urban day. the celebrations took place on Saturday, starting at 10am with a graffiti style painting competition in which local artists were given the chance to decorate recycling bins with fabulous painted designs. the best designs were chosen by a jury which included professional graffiti

artist Carlos Vera, teacher from the Municipal School of Painting Mar García and representatives from the town hall including deputy Mayor Martínez Chazarra, Councillor for Security and emergencies, Federico Alarcón, Councillor for youth, domingo Paredes, and Councillor for Care and Promotion of the urban image, Carmen Gómez. 30 graffiti artists took part with a top prize of €3000

going to winner José Manuel Rodríguez trigueros. Second and third prizes of €3000 and €2000 were awarded to david Maikes Paredes and Maikel Adolfo Bernal respectively. the urban day drew to a close with an amazing holi Party full of colours, music, laughter and fun. All the participants threw fistfuls of coloured powder into the air, to the rhythm of a dJ who had been playing throughout the day.

Expand your horizons with Worldwide Horizons Travel

After what has seemed like an eternity, the offices of Worldwide horizons at la Zenia are experiencing a sudden surge in bookings for holidays, hotels and cruises all around the world. Popular destinations such as the Caribbean are steadily booking up over our winter seasons, since the best time to travel is december to May but also summer and lastminute bookings are increasingly popular. Whilst there are still Covid restrictions in some destinations, many countries have dropped all but the most minimal of requirements for travellers. And with many countries which would normally be dependent on the tourism market, this has led to some super discounts available for last minute bargain hunters and also those looking for early-booking discounts. Spain opened its doors early to its domestic market relatively early in the pandemic, which led to an upsurge in bookings for the Canary islands and also, this summer, the Balearics. With daily connections to Alicante and frequent connections to the new Murcia airport, these are short-hop direct flights – so whilst international travel was still difficult, these destinations have enjoyed receiving more visitors. And with less travellers than usual, these are the perfect moments to visit. But it is not just the Spanish destinations that have been benefitting from the lifting of restrictions – many Spanish speaking

Caribbean destinations were amongst the first to drop requirements and start receiving tourists. Certainly there has been more of a demand for 5* holidays in Mexico and Saint lucia as people look to add a little luxury to their holidays after such a long time at home. At the travel agency, customers have been asking for these and many more destinations. Bucket list travel such as World Cruises, long haul destinations and luxury accommodation are amongst the more popular requests. in fact, cruising is so popular that some 2023 cruises are now already sold out and with a waiting list! these are unique opportunities to visit around 24 different countries and almost double that in destinations. Worldwide horizons still have one balcony cabin to sell for this cruise for 2023 – an opportunity for any clients still looking to book, since there are no cabins available otherwise! Restrictions do still apply in some instances, which is adding an extra layer of work in booking any holiday at this time since the rules are everchanging. the team Katie and yvonne are constantly checking requirements,

visas and passport validity too, since many clients have been caught up in the recent changes to Passport validity periods. if you are looking to book a holiday, ferry or cruise or simply looking for a weekend getaway, contact Katie or yvonne on their website, or by email travel@whtravel.es

After the wanted minor managed to escape on foot, the other man managed to flee the scene in a vehicle, even making death threats and trying to run over the officer. days later, an warrant for entry into a house in the town of Carpio de tajo was authorized, where the minor was located, arrested and readmitted to the Center for Minors from which he had previously escaped. A search operation was established for the perpetrator of the assault against the officer which led to Almoradí, specifically to a house that was being occupied illegally.

Covid in the Alicante wastewater system increases six fold after Hogueras the figures confirm that covid has skyrocketed in Alicante after the recent hogueras festivities. the latest update of the wastewater study, promoted by Aguas de Alicante and the City Council, shows the worst data in recent months in the capital of Alicante, coinciding with the outbreak of the ‘seventh wave’ and the celebration of

the bonfires of San Juan after two years of hiatus due to the pandemic. the samples taken on June 26, two days after the cremà, point to values of 4,400,000 genome units per litre (gu/l) at the Rincón de león treatment plant (which serves the southern half of the city) compared to the 220,000 gu/l of the samples

from Monte orgegia (from the northern area). on average, the last analysis, carried out after fiestas was around 1,794,929 gu/l. the 4,400,000 gu/l is the third highest amount detected during this 2022, only surpassed by values from the beginning of the year, coinciding with the omicron variant.

Craig Ireland Recent headlines have been dominated by two topics. The NATO Summit in Madrid didn’t get off to a good start. One can imagine the consternation on the faces of the po-faced delegates on their discovering that Russian Salad topped the breakfast table’s starters course. Tummies full, it was time for the talking heads to enter the debating chamber. Are you sitting comfortably, then I will begin? Mounting the podium, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg shuffled his papers before delivering his keynote address. The hapless delegates were to find their leader’s words as hard to digest as their Russian Salad. The ex-banker assured representatives that by 2050 NATO’s environmentally friendly tanks would be electrically powered. One presumes

that conflicts after this date, including nuclear wars, will be environmentally friendly. That is a relief. If you think that is dumb then remember that when addressing the house a New Zealand member of parliament asked why we need farmers when we have supermarkets. Fuel Crisis? What crisis? (former Prime Minister Harold MacMillan). Old-hand readers of Costa Blanca People will recall much earlier advice: ‘Is your journey really necessary?’ and ‘Fifty is Thrifty’. Fast forward: German Economics Minister Robert Habeck suggested that showers are limited to five minutes and we ‘go to work on a bike’. Perhaps he recalled the advice given by Norman Tebbit at the 1980s Tory conference: ‘Get on your bike to look for work’. Not to be overlooked was the G7 shindig held at the Schloss-Elmau

palace. As the retreat is situated in the German Alps, Chancellor Olaf Scholtz hosted the seven-nations events. A pretty sanctuary but the turreted citadel is no match for our own Alcazar de Segovia which inspired Walt Disney to create Cinderella’s castle. The European Union Commission was represented by the trading bloc’s two presidents. Sadly, neither Charles Michel nor Ursula von der Leyen was elected by the electorate of the EU’s ‘coalition of neighbours.’ Headline-grabbing stuff but Chinese Foreign Ministry Zhao Lijian spoiled the knees-up with a reminder that the BRICS trading bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) provides for 3.3 billion people whilst their G7 rival represents just 777 million people. He might have added that Argentina and Iran with a combined population of 130 million are about to join BRICS.

How is this for starters

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the uK registered its worst trade performance in the first quarter of 2022, since accurate records began. despite the onS warning that their numbers were ‘subject to higher levels of uncertainty than normal’, the new system has been designed to be more accurate in the long run. the data highlighted that the uK’s current account deficit was now a whopping 8.3% of GdP (Q1/22), which is materially worse than the average print of 2.6% through each quarter last year. overall, there was a 4.4% fall in real exports against a 10.4% jump in real imports. that weak export performance when balanced against the surge of imports will heap further pressure on the government, given that exports have taken such a nosedive since the introduction of the new post-Brexit border controls at the beginning of last year. the Boe’s Bailey, who was speaking at this week’s eCB forum in Portugal, said that it was hard to differentiate the impact of CoVid from Brexit, which is a shame, as we will never really know just how much of a negative impact on the economy Brexit has had. the final growth figures for Q1 were somewhat more pleasing, with GdP registering an as-expected 0.8% gain, driving the annual print at 8.7% (Q1/yoy). Sterling has had a mixed week (so far). GBP/uSd drifted back from over 1.2300, to just under 1.2100, but that move was mostly down to a surging dollar (see uSd). GBP/euR is still around 1.1600, but over the past 2 days, the pair has been as low as 1.1550, and as high as 1.1700, perhaps reflecting higher intra-day volatility. next week is fairly light in terms of keynote uK data, but the latest halifax house prices are our pick of the bunch. Given accelerating weakness across many facets of the uK economy, it will be interesting to see whether those key house prices maintain their impressive growth profile, or whether those five Boe rate hikes will ultimately start to have a negative impact on

the housing market, or not. EURO there was much anticipation leading into this week’s eCB forum in Sintra, Portugal, on the part of the eCB. Given that Madame lagarde has steadfastly refused to budge from hiking rates by more than 25bps at the upcoming eCB meeting this month, markets were desperate for clarification that the eCB might be willing to make a bigger and bolder move in September. in the end, there was no such confirmation of a 50bps move, however, Madame lagarde did keep the door open to larger hikes, if the economic data delivers in the meantime, suggesting that they were ready to ‘move faster’. the big worry for the eCB is perhaps not about markets, but those rising borrowing costs for some of the regions more indebted nations. on that note, at an auction on thursday, italy has just had to pay the highest borrowing costs on its debt since the eurozone debt crisis, given that the eCB have now withdrawn ongoing support from its bond buying programme. italy had to pay a yield of 3.44% on its 10-year bonds. the last time they had to pay that was over 8 years ago. on the other side of the rate-hiking debate, inflation surged beyond 10% in Spain for the first time since the mid 80’s, and whilst there was some good news as German inflation surprisingly contracted, the overall picture of surging inflation for the region is still very much the order of the day, suggesting that the eCB should go bold and go bold soon. interestingly enough, the latest region-wide hiCP inflation data is out just after we go to press, which will give the eCB some food for thought. Keep your eyes on that one. All of this shows just how much of a challenge and balancing act it is for the eCB, especially at times of increased stresses amongst euro area economies.

Ask the Mayor Put your questions directly to torrevieja Mayor eduardo dolón by emailing aoife@costablancapeople.com Hello - I have two questions, the first one: Why is it so hard to get a appointment at the padrón office, only online - cannot ring up or go in person - not easy at all, the web site only in Spanish there were no appointments for a month online especially for elderly. How do we get on the voting register. My second question is regarding the hospital in Torrevieja: I have been waiting for an appointment since last December, all I keep getting told is the book is not opened for the month/or no appointments left or they are going to send a text with an appointment which never arrives. I have gone in person and my doctor sent a email still no appointment. I am supposed to have two check/scan a year am getting none. The last appointment in varicose vein clinic was on 21 May 2021 K Bennett Hello Mr. Bennett, You are right that it can be difficult to get an appointment directly with the padrón office, but not to worry, we will help you. If you have a digital signature then you can use the services for padrón online that you will find here: torrevieja. sedeelectronica.es - Catálogo de trámites

- Población y Territorio. Many people do not have a digital signature, and there is no obligation to be digital. Private people have the right to present any application to the authorities in person. To do this then you need to make an appointment with “Registro general” or “PROP”. In Torrevieja we have a register in La Mata town hall and next to the town hall (in the centre of Torrevieja) where there is a metal gate. To book an appointment with a register you go to torrevieja.es - Cita previa - Registro general/Firma digital/ PROP and then you choose Registro general in La Mata or in Torrevieja. If you do not speak Spanish then we have our department for International residents. They can attend in English, German, French and Scandinavian. The best way to contact them is by email pangea@torrevieja.eu. They will be happy to help you with all services related to padrón. The people who receive a letter saying that they need to renew or confirm their padrón can go to the padrón office without prior appointment bringing the letter and ID. To register for voting in Spain then the EU-citizens that are residents in Spain can sign up any time online. Again the department of International Residents will be happy to help. The British and the Norwegian citizens need to have been residents in Spain for three years to be able to vote. They will need to register before any coming elections. As this will be the first time that British citizens have to do this registration they will make sure to inform in detail about how this is done, so keep an eye out by the end of 2022 for more information on how to do this.

About the hospital in Torrevieja then it is with deep concern how our hospital has gone from being one of the best hospitals to now suffering severe problems. We were very proud of our hospital in Torrevieja. It has always been a public hospital, but it was managed by a private company Ribera Salud. They had a contract for 15 years with possibility for prolonging. As the hospital was a success with great patient satisfaction and a cost effective service from the town hall we saw it as obvious to prolong the contract. Unfortunately the authorities in the Valencian Government saw it differently. Because of ideological reasons they were very eager to get rid of any private company running a public hospital. The citizens of Torrevieja have been protesting and fighting to keep our beloved hospital as it was, using the slogan: “Why fix it if it ain’t broken”. We were afraid that the quality would get worse. Unfortunately our worst fear has become reality. When it was clear that the company could no longer proceed then medical staff started fleeing and we lost a lot of staff, especially the doctors that have sought after qualifications. When it was a private company then they were able to headhunt international staff and attract them by offering conditions tailormade. Also the hospital would give contracts to doctors who only had the basic medical education. In the public hospitals they only give fixed contracts to specialized doctors. In Spain the two year specialization is called MIR. In the hospital we had staff who have had fixed contracts for up to 15 years, but despite their valuable experience, these people could no longer proceed on current conditions and had to see themselves

going from a good job to getting back to working like a temp. During the process of the conversion of the hospital I have felt a lack of communication between town hall and authorities in Valencia. I would see them celebrating meetings about the hospital and could not understand why I as the Mayor in Torrevieja or representatives from management in Hospital or representatives of the population were not invited. Lately the lack of doctors in the Torrevieja Hospital is very worrying, and especially when we are entering the high season where we know that the number of patients in our area will increase heavily. Finally after insisting for long I was accepted for a meeting with the new conseller in Valencia responsible for Sanidad. I went to a meeting together with the Councillor Diana Box who is responsible for Public Health in Torrevieja. Here we could communicate our concern and we were assured that they would do their utmost to get the staff needed. We really hope that we will see improvement soon,

15

but it is difficult. Getting medical staff is complicated. Hiring other types of staff can help in some ways, but the hiring of specialized doctors is crucial. Now we see that a lot of people in the Torrevieja area are contracting private insurance. This is an option for some, but as a society this is not a solution. What we want is to assure that everybody has access to good and free public health care. Kind regards, Your Mayor, Eduardo Dolón

with your smartphone. With the addition of another camera, you can broaden your photo-taking abilities. every lens in a smartphone camera is coupled with a sensor. the sensor records the light coming in from the lens in digital format, just like any other digital camera. like lenses, the sensors in a smartphone camera are tiny. this is another reason why smartphone cameras don’t have as shallow a depth of field. What is AI camera in Android? From transition holdings, Ai Camera is a free artificial intelligence app for Android devices. it uses Ai to detect what features inside the frame. it then gives on-screen direction to improve your photo. Alongside controls like Aperture and White Balance, the Ai camera also supports Burst Mode and hdR. Features that determine the Quality of a Cell Phone Camera Believe it or not, you can take some great photos with a cell phone camera. to take great photos with a cell phone camera, your camera needs to have the right features. Features that you should look at when buying a cell phone camera include: 1. Pixel Count how many megapixels a

cell phone camera has is very important. the more pixels, the better your photos will be. you should only look at cell phone cameras that have at least 3 megapixels if you want to take high quality photos. 2. Lens Quality lens quality is more important than zoom when you are buying a cell phone camera. to determine lens quality, you really need to take a photo with the cell phone to see what the quality is. Most cell phones cameras are fixed lens cameras. 3. CCD Quality Most cell phone cameras will feature CCd sensors. in terms of quality, you should be okay with a single CCd sensor. if you can afford a cell phone camera that has multiple CCd sensors, then by all means, go for it. Cheaper cell phone cameras will have a CMoS sensor, which produces low quality images. 4. Exposure Range the camera phone that you are looking at should have a wide exposure range. As a general rule, the more f-stops the camera has, the better your photos will be.

Exciting new updates from WhatsApp Messaging service WhatsApp announced that it will be rolling out several new privacy features giving users more control over the kinds of information other people can see. With the new update, users can limit who can see their profile photo, last seen status, and more. the change includes a new option that allows users to block specific people in your contacts from seeing your profile photo, about, and last seen status. Previously, WhatsApp only had three options: everyone, my contacts, and nobody. insiders say that if users do decide to hide their last seen status from others, you won’t be able to see theirs either. Prior to the official launch, the new privacy setting was available to select users as part of a limited beta test. the metaowned messaging platform also announced new updates for its group calls. in a tweet from the head of WhatsApp at Meta Will Cathcart, participants in large group calls can now mute or message specific people. he said, “Some new features for group calls on @WhatsApp : you can now mute or message specific people on a call (great if someone forgets to mute themselves!), and we’ve added

a helpful indicator so you can more easily see when more people join large calls.” one of the features is an indicator placed at the bottom of the group call. it informs all participants that someone joined the group call. these features will be available to the users who have installed the latest version of the app. the company also announced earlier this week that it was adding the ability for users to

transfer their conversation chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages from Android to iPhone via Apple’s Move to ioS app. in addition, WhatsApp is also rolling out a new feature to beta testers to allow them to filter their unread chats by using a filter button. A similar feature was released for business accounts in January. it’s not yet known when the filter feature will be available on general release.

Drivers can use little known button to reduce fuel consumption Motorist shave been urged to use a little-known button that almost every car has to massively reduce fuel consumption. driving in Spain in the summer, air conditioning is absolutely necessary but it has the knock on effect that air con systems in cars use a huge amount of engine power, which impacts on fuel consumption – something high on everyone’s list of priorities at the moment given the inflation crisis and the spiralling cost of fuel. Air con systems in case usually work by taking the outside air and then heating or cooling it. the air in Spain is so warm, to cool it to a comfortable temperature takes a lot of work (and therefore, a lot of fuel). however, drivers online have taken to social media to share a handy method that can be used to save fuel. When an air con system takes warm air from outside, the vehicle uses much more fuel compared to the option which lets the car’s air-con system use the air from inside the car. thankfully, there is a button specially designed to let motorists choose which option they prefer.

if activated, the air recirculation button, allows the aircon to use the air from inside the car by drawing it through vents. And, at the same time, it stops the outside air from getting in. the button is usually located around the aircon dial that allows the driver to set the internal temperature. using the button will help reduce fuel consumption as it puts less strain on the car’s engine. the principle is the same for electric cars as the aircon will put less strain on the battery. Bradley Jando of Kwik Fit said: “the compressor requires energy to run your vehicle’s air conditioning system and so will use a small amount of fuel

whenever the system is running. “it could increase your fuel usage by as much as 10 percent, and the effects are particularly noticeable on short journeys. “When you initially set off, the air con has to work hard to bring the internal temperature down to a comfortable level.” despite the reduction in fuel consumption the RAC adds: “don’t use your air conditioning unless you really have to as it uses engine power and therefore increases fuel consumption. “this goes for heat as well as cooling, so try to dress for the weather, even inside your car, if fuel efficiency is a big concern.” the news comes as motorists are facing the highest petrol and diesel prices on record.

Mayor inaugurates the new Viking HQ Mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, alongside Councillor for international Residents, Gitte lund presided over the official opening of a new insurance company headquarters which represents over 130 jobs for torrevieja. the event was attended by executive director of Viking nordic Assistance, Marius Bruu, and the coordinator of human Resources in Spain for Viking, Ruth Moreno. Viking has been in operation in torrevieja for six years, and this week moved into its new premises on Calle Pedro lorca, located in a building that for many years had housed one of the most well known businesses in the town, Astoria. the building has four floors and has been completely remodelled to accommodate

the 130 workers who operate there on a daily basis. Viking is a call centre for roadside assistance that serves thousands of citizens of the nordic countries daily, mainly from Sweden, norway and Finland. it is the largest and most important roadside assistance company in operation in these countries. the mayor of torrevieja expressed his delight that Viking has chosen to operate out of torrevieja and has congratulated those responsible for what he described as a great project. he praised the work that the staff are carrying out in torrevieja, and expressed his satisfaction that the Viking staff, almost all of them of Scandinavian origin, work, reside and live life

with their families in torrevieja. For eduardo dolón, this demonstrates that torrevieja is increasingly attractive to entrepreneurs, both national and international, so work must continue to ensure that this type of business project is implemented. executive director of Viking nordic Assistance, Marius Bruu, highlighted that torrevieja is a great city to live and work, for all its benefits and for the quality of life it offers, so the Viking team are delighted to be able to reside her. Bruu also announced that the company, given the amount of work it currently has, is going to increase the number of employees in its facilities next year, increasing staff numbers from almost 140 to 200.

Fans ‘sceptical’ as Holly feels faint during on air botox treatment Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield led a discussion on botox during a segment on ITV’s This Morning. Following the recent news that John Lewis will now offer Botox and fillers at six of its UK stores, a member of the This Morning crew was given Botox live on air. Demonstrating how ‘quick and easy’ the process is, a cosmetic doctor treated crew member Fleur, who works in the ITV show’s green room, by injecting her face with Botox which she wanted to make herself ‘feel better’. But before the procedure began, Phillip Schofield issued a warning to any viewers with a ‘needle phobia’, which surprisingly included his co-star Holly. The TV presenter admitted that she felt a ‘little wobbly’ as she told Phil she may need to ‘look away’.

Phil then showed viewers that two crew members were on standby with chairs to the side of Holly in case she suddenly felt faint. Some This Morning fans were in complete disbelief over Holly’s fear of needles, as they were certain that the 41-year-old beauty had had Botox herself. “41 and not a wrinkle? Come on Holly what’s your secret if its not Botox?” asked Edina on Twitter. “Why is Holly pretending she’s so scared of needles? She clearly has expensive work done with needles to her face,” claimed another viewer. “Holly acting like she’s never had a Botox needle in her face,” a third questioned, whilst another said “Think that gives the answer to anyone wondering if Holly has ever had Botox. She couldn’t even look at the needle.”

Crevillente speed camera hidden between bins The motoring Twitter account, SocialDrive, shared an image this week that has outraged many road users. The photo shows an image of a ‘velolaser’ (a portable speed trap) hidden between bins in Crevillente. In the image, we can see an officer beside the portable speed camera, hidden between a glass recycling bank and a rubbish bin. Twitter user comments on the image, posted by @socialdrive_es are mostly furious, with many claiming that speeds traps of this nature only service to penalise motorists financially, rather than to encourage road users to slow down and encourage safety. In Spain there is no law that dictates that mobile and camouflaged speed cameras must be marked, unlike fixed speed cameras, which must be marked.

What is a velolaser A velolaser is an “invisible” radar, very small in size, with a height of less than 50 centimetres and an approximate weight of two kilos, which allows it to be placed almost anywhere on the road: on a tripod, at a traffic light, on the guardrail, inside a vehicle with traffic officers, etc. Although the image in question shows an officer next to this particular velolaser, they are wireless and work autonomously, controlling themselves

remotely via WiFi or 3G/4G. Thanks to their characteristics, velolaser radars are difficult for the driver to detect and easy for the authorities to handle and transport. Once set up, the Velolaser speed traps can track at a distance of between 15 and 50 metres, catching all offenders who are driving at speeds of between 30 and 250 kilometres per hour. Velolasers can detect the speed of the cars along two traffic lanes, in one or two directions. In addition, they work both day and night, transmitting the captured images to Guardia Civil traffic agents in almost real time.

Application period for school transport benefits in Torrevieja now open The application period for submitting requests for municipal benefits for school transport in Torrevieja is now open. Beneficiaries must be registered on the padron and reside in the municipality of Torrevieja - both the student and the parents or legal guardians - for at least two years before submitting the request. The period of residency must also include the entire 2021/2022 school year. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, accompanied by the Councillor for Treasury, Domingo Paredes, gave a joint press conference to announce that this week, once the regulations for application have been published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), the deadline for submitting request for municipal aid for school transport will officially open, and will remain open for 20 business days from the day following the publication of the BOP. Applications can be submitted through the Electronic Office online or in person at the Municipal Registry (PROP). Councillor Recuero explained that the benefits are open to students

from Second Cycle Early Childhood Education (‘Infantil’) Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education, Initial Professional Qualification Programs, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, enrolled in public schools or institutes of the city of Torrevieja, who are accredited users of the school transport service and who have had to pay for bus transfers to their public school or institute. The maximum individual amount of the benefit will be 60 euro per month for students who used the school bus for two daily trips, for a maximum period of 10 months, between September 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022. In no case can the amount of the benefit exceed the amount spent on the school bus by the applicants/beneficiaries. Councillor Recuero added that the benefits will be granted based on the economic situation of the student’s family, with a maximum family income set at €65,000 during the 2020 financial year. The budget allocation by the town hall for School Transport Aid is 100,000 euros, which they explained is “expandable to the demand that exists”.

Time to buy, say property experts “Spanish homes are selling fast. It is time to buy.” That’s the message from one of Spain’s leading property developers Taylor Wimpey, which saw property reservations by British buyers increase by 180% in its May YTD figures. Data from Rightmove backs the trend, with buyer enquiries for properties in Spain up by 36% in April 2022 compared to the same month in 2021. At the same time, visitor numbers to Spain are increasing hugely. 24 million tourists chose Spain for their holidays between January and April 2022, with three million of them from Britain (more than from any other country). That’s a 433% increase compared to the same period last year. Marc Pritchard from Taylor Wimpey said, “With rapidly rising visitor numbers, we’re expecting further keen interest in our properties in both mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands over the course of the summer months. British buyers have shown they are determined to enjoy the opportunity of spending time in Spain and forging a deep connection with the country by owning a home here.” “Whether it’s urban townhouses, golf apartments or frontline beach homes, buyers are clearly telling us that it’s time to buy. The pandemic has given many

families the chance to reevaluate their priorities and making happy memories together in the sunshine is now top of many people’s lists.” The surging interest in holiday homes comes as the Spanish property market generally is enjoying a buoyant performance. During Q1 2022, the volume of sales was up by 14.1% compared to the previous year, according to the Colegio Registradores. Tinsa data shows that prices have risen to, with an increase of 8.4% in the year to May 2022

New charging points for electric vehicles in Almoradí Almoradí has unveiled new charging points for electric vehicles on Avenida Príncipe de España and Plaza José Canales. The new charging points feature two 50 kW chargers and one dual-use 44 kW charger, allowing simultaneous charging of up to four cars, 24 hours a day. Electric vehicle owners will be able to recharge the battery of their electric cars with 100% green energy, from renewable generation sources, with a guarantee of origin certificate (GdOs). The new recharging points are part of the Iberdrola Public Recharge app, the only application in Spain that incorporates verified information on all electric vehicle chargers, both those of Iberdrola and those of other operators, so that the charger can be geolocated, users can also check its operation in real time as well as book and pay from a mobile device. Mayor of Almoradí, María Gómez; Councillor for the Environment, José Antonio Latorre, and Councillor for Economic Development, Aroha González, attended the launch of the new charging points, remarking that “Iberdrola continues with its commitment to sustainable mobility with the installation of new recharging

points for electric vehicles in our municipality”. The presentation was also attended by Enrique Planells, manager of Public Administrations of Iberdrola in the Valencian Community, and Juan Carlos Brotons, commercial manager of the company in Alicante, who demonstrated how the charging points operate. “We hope that residents use them regularly, since they improve the quality of the air we breathe,” said the town hall Almoradí town hall, at the recent occasion of the Almoradí Used Car Fair, presented two electric vehicles, acquired within the programme of nonmonetary aid that the Provincial Council has made available to local administrations so that the town hall itself can be a good example in promoting the

energy transition. The two electric vans, valued at 27,397 euros each, join a hybrid car that the council acquired two years ago, which will be used for works and services, as well as for inspections carried out by the Urban Planning department. Speaking about urban planning, Mayor Gómez indicated that the July plenary session is expected to approve an ordinance to increase the revisions of old buildings with the aim of bringing them up to date. Thus, letters will be sent to owners so that a technical inspection of the building can be carried out, something like an ITV for buildings, a requirement that the Ministry imposes when owners are applying for subsidies that allow buildings to be adapted for energy efficiency.

The summer fair returns to the Port of Jávea After an interruption of two years, due to the pandemic, the artisans of Amata will set up their stalls again throughout the summer on the sea side boulevard in the Port of Jávea. From July they will be there every afternoon until 4 September, except for some days during the Moors and Christians festival in the second half of July. Opening times are from 7 p.m. till midnight. This year will be the eighth time that an original Arts and Crafts Fair is held throughout the summer on this site and over the years it has gained quite a reputation for the authenticity and quality of the stalls: at each stall there is an authentic artisan or artist who only sells his own work. That’s why they use the frase Artesanía de Autor®: the authors of all products are present in the fair! The fair is an initiative of the shopkeepers’ association of the port and they have asked Amata again to organise it, because this craft association carefully selects the artisans to offer the maximum variety. Some artisans from the area come all summer, others come from other parts of Spain to spend a few weeks with the family on the beach and in the afternoons set up their stall on the Paseo Marítimo. In this way Amata guarantees a lively and varied fair in which original and quality products can be found. Depending on the week or day that you go, you can find leather bags

and belts; ceramics; original wooden lamps or dolls, puppets and toys; own design jewelry in silver, macramé, alpaca or paper; hand-painted clothing; including watercolors and paintings. Several artisans will set up a work table in their stall to personalize their products, adapt them to the preferences of their clients, or carry out special orders. Two or three times a week there will be live music – the programme and more information can be found at https://www.puebloartesano. es/javeaverano.html. In addition, a page has been created on Facebook ( h t t p s : / / w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / feriaartesaniajavea/) where the latest news about the fair, special performances or possible changes in

the schedule are published and on Google Maps you can put “Feria de Artesanía Jávea” in the search engine to see where the fair is held. This fair is one more reason to visit the port of Jávea, which already has a lot to offer: the port itself with its fish market, the modernist church of the Virgen de Loreto in the shape of a boat, the shops and countless terraces to enjoy a drink, lunch or dinner by the sea. You can get to the fair on the tourist train that runs between Jávea’s Arenal Beach and the old town: in the port it stops next to the fair. For more information (also in English) you can call 639 979 678. Come and see for yourself the difference with other beach fairs! This one is small, but select.

A June wedding for Spangles The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, of which Spangles is a founding member, recently reached out to respond to an urgent enquiry. County Councilor Brian O’Donoghue from Rathvilly, County Carlow in Ireland, planned to marry at the Hotel Perla Marina in Nerja, Málaga. He wanted to surprise his bride-to-be, Miriam, with a serenade or two by a barbershop ensemble while she was getting ready on her big day. Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines, contacted Brian straight away and gave him links to recent performances. He was very impressed with what he saw and agreed that a sextet would be ideal for the occasion. Musical Director, Valerie Lynch, set to work and ‘The Spanglettes’ was formed with Lyn and Maggie singing bass, Carol singing Baritone, Barbara singing Tenor and Valerie and Linda singing Lead. ‘The Spanglettes’ travelled to Nerja from Los Alcázares the day before the wedding. On the big day, they arrived in good time at the hotel and were greeted by the wedding planner, who sneaked them up to the corridor outside the bride’s room. Miriam heard ‘Love Me With All Your Heart’ and opened the door, in total surprise! A few more songs were sung to her and her bridesmaids and ‘The Spanglettes’ wished the couple a long and happy life together.

Ease aches with a coconut latte When your stiff knees or creaky joints to flare up, take a moment to relax with a hot drink: Simply warm a mug of 8 ounces of coconut milk, then stir in 1⁄4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric. A Stanford University study found that this tasty brew can cut even chronic aches by 63 percent, delivering better results than aspirin or ibuprofen. Think faster with wine and cheese Sprinkling parmesan over pasta and pouring yourself a glass of wine is a tasty way to feel younger and boost your brain power. A new 10-year Iowa State University study found it’ll keep your thinking sharp as you age. When scientists analysed the diets of folks over 50, then measured their ability to think on the fly, those who enjoyed any amount of wine and cheese daily scored 27 percent higher on problemsolving exercises than those who never indulged. Top 10 countries with the highest alcohol consumption Alcohol is so much part of daily life in some countries that entire cultures have been built up around a drink – whether it’s a glass of Rioja along with some tapas, a stein of beer at Oktoberfest, or a few glasses of prosecco with the girls, alcohol is firmly embedded in the cultures of nations across the globe. A new study by Our World in Data looked at the world’s biggest alcohol consumers. The study looked at ‘litres of pure alcohol’ consumed to avoid disparities between beer, wine and spirits. Global average consumption in individuals above the age of 15 was 6.18 litres, with a notably high concentration of bigger drinkers in Europe. Interestingly, countries where beer is the most popular beverage dominate the top 10, despite the drink’s relatively low ABV. ABV stands for alcohol by volume, the metric used to determine the alcohol content in an alcoholic beverage. The measurement shows what percentage of the beverage’s total volume is pure alcohol. Most beers come in at around 5% with wine between 11 and 13% and spirits at 40%. The top ten consumers of alcohol in the world are as follows: 1) Seychelles – 20.50 litres: With a population of fewer than 100,000, men in the Seychelles are significantly bigger consumers than women, spending perhaps a quarter of household income on drinks. Beer is growing in popularity there, as it is across the rest of Africa. 2) Uganda – 15.09 litres: In Uganda, beer is cheap and wine is growing in popularity. There is huge

demand for South African wine, with exports to Uganda in the last year exceeding pre-pandemic levels. Czech Republic – 14.45 litres: Prague is known for rowdy tourists that visit for boozy breaks, but it would appear that the Czechs themselves also appreciate the country’s fantastic beer scene. Lithuania – 13.22 litres: Lithuania has one of the lowest proportions of daily drinkers in the EU, but has one of the highest monthly consumptions. This effectively means that when Lithuanians drink, it’s ‘go big, or go home’. And it’s not just beer and vodka that are popular though, as Lithuania now has a growing market for Cava. Luxembourg – 12.94 litres: With a surprisingly large Portuguese population, as well as an obvious French and German presence, it is perhaps no surprise that this tiny country has a taste for wine. The low prices (half price, for example, of that in neighbouring Belgium) are a major draw to visitors from bordering countries. Germany – 12.91 litres: The German fondness for a good stein of beer is well documented, and imitation Oktoberfests take place across the globe – even here in Spain. But it’s not just beer on the menu – sparkling wine is hugely popular, both that produced domestically and Champagne (16million bottles were sold in Germany last year, a 28% increase on the 2019 level). Ireland – 12.88 litres: It’s one of the more pernicious

national stereotypes, and while they’re not even in the top 5, the data does suggest that the Irish enjoy their stout. However, alcohol laws in Ireland are becoming stricter, with a recent ban on selling bottles of wine for less than EUR€7.40. 8) Latvia – 12.77 litres: Latvia has been the site of Stoli production (a well known vodka made of wheat and rye grain) since 2000. Latvia isn’t just the place to go for vodka, as it is also one of the world’s most valuable markets for whisky, importing GB£176million worth of Scotch in 2020. 9) Spain – 12.72 litres: Whether you think of Spain as the country of Sangria, San Miguel or Rioja, there’s no shortage of drinks. Indeed, Spain is one of the biggest beer producing countries in the world, and second only to Italy in terms of the volume of wine produced. Regular drinking may well be a symptom of the Mediterranean climate lending itself to the need for a thirst quencher. 10) Bulgaria – 12.65 litres: Bulgarian drinks might not be the most internationally well known, but there is clearly a domestic demand for them. Mastika, a spirit close to ouzo, and rakia, a fruit brandy, are both widely produced and consumed. The country’s winemaking potential is starting to be realised abroad, as is that of the whole Black Sea region. Further down the rankings, the United Kingdom is joint 21st with Belarus, with the average adult imbibing 11.45 litres of ethanol per annum.

Alicante has highest number of monkeypox cases in the Valencian Community The Ministry of Health reported four new positive cases of monkeypox in the province of Alicante in recent days making Alicante the province with the most cases of this infectious disease in the Valencian Community, with 10 in total. It is followed by Valencia, with six, and Castellón with one. The Ministry of Health reported that the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (Renave) had confirmed, to date, 800 cases

of monkeypox in Spain, which are distributed in an age range of 3 to 67 years, confirming that infections have occurred in children. According to the report issued by the Health Ministry from the Centre for the Coordination of Emergencies and Health Alerts (CCAES) data indicates that confirmed cases come from 16 autonomous communities across Spain. Of the 800 people who have been

infected, 792 are men and 8 women, with an age ranging between 3 and 67 years. In total, 406 have had clinical manifestations and of these 25 patients

(6.2%) presented complications throughout their clinical process. The most frequent were secondary bacterial infections and mouth ulcers. The report adds that only 24 cases were hospitalized, without any deaths. Of the 273 cases for which information on the most likely transmission mechanism was available, 93.4% were through close contact in the context of high-risk sexual intercourse and 6.6% were through close non-sexual contact,

according to the CCAES . The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to that of the now eradicated smallpox, although somewhat milder - fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain, chills and exhaustion - and there is often swollen glands and a skin rash, that begins on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, mainly hands and feet. Unlike with smallpox, in monkeypox the appearance of swollen glands is common.

My grandson and his partner are struggling with the cost-of-living rises. When they first bought their house, they could afford it, but now they are moving to a cheaper area because they say they can’t make ends meet - they have children, and she’s only able to work part time, and things are tough. He’s never had to budget in his life, and when I told him that we’d grown up in a time where we were taught to be frugal, he wanted suggestions. The recent rise in the cost of living is extremely noticeable with ever increasing prices at the supermarket tills, in all countries. I’ve asked readers for tips on saving

money - things that really can make a difference, so please write in. In the meantime, here are some suggestions. Pick up yellow sticker food and freeze it. Buy home brands. Don’t leave the tap running, and save up water you would normally throw away to water plants, or flush the loo. Don’t use lights when the sun is up. Switch off electronic items that you normally leave on standby. I suggested to my younger family members that they no longer send birthday or Christmas cards to us. You might find this mercenary but it can cost as much as 6 pounds / 7 euros each time to buy and post a card, that only ends up being thrown away. With messaging these days, it no longer seems

necessary. It’s also a huge environmental waste. My husband and I don’t even open cards anymore and send them straight for recycling. Hundreds a year can be saved by messaging one another instead, or make a phone call, and it would help young people particularly, to save the money.

Changes to the ITV Inspection With the outbreak of the pandemic, several elements of the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) stopped being carried out. Mostly those elements that meant access to the interior of the car by the technicians, something that was restricted for reasons of hygiene and to avoid contagion. But, from July 1, these tests will be carried out again during the inspection at all ITV stations in Spain, as stated in the new version of the Inspection Procedure Manual for ITV Stations (v. 7.6 .1). Verification of the frame number One of the tests that has not always been possible to carry out during these two years is the one that checks the stamping of the frame number or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), which identifies each vehicle, being something like the equivalent to the ID of the car. In this test, through visual inspection, it is verified: Existence of the chassis number. The state of the same (if it is legible, if it has been manipulated or is incomplete). That coincides with the number that appears in the documentation of the car or vehicle. The VIN or chassis number is usually located in three places and depending on the model it could not always be checked from outside the car:

Engraved on the vehicle’s dashboard and visible through the front window. On the manufacturer’s plate, which could be under the B-pillar in the door area or on the door itself, but also in the engine compartment, in the spare wheel well, under the passenger seat or in the rear or in the central tunnel, among others. Die-cut on the vehicle chassis. The other big change has to do with the reading of the emissions system through an OBD reader. This involves connecting the electronic control unit of the car or vehicle to an external computer, through a socket located in the area of the fuses or under the steering wheel. This check, mandatory since May 2018, usually requires the operator to access the interior of the car since the fuses can be located on the dashboard, under the steering wheel,

in the glove box or in the central console or tunnel. This technology verifies that there are no errors or unauthorized modifications have been made. Likewise, it allows a diagnosis of possible faults to be made based on what is included in the manual. Plus Although it has nothing to do with the access of the operators to the passenger compartment, in the new version of the inspection manual, a novelty is also added and it concerns the tyres. If the operators consider that the wheels of the car, either all or some, are in danger of bursting (because they have exposed cables, blisters, deformations, breaks or other symptoms that affect the detachment of the layers), the test of resistance will not be carried out due to the risk that it can cause.

Vehicles that the DGT Requires to have a Breathalyser Various technological improvements are coming online, all aimed at improving road safety, but some which can have a direct impact on the driver. In addition to the new traffic laws that came into force this year, a reform has been carried out on the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety that comes into force on July 6 and that requires the incorporation of certain driving assistance systems, known as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Among them the most controversial is the breathalyser, also known as Alcolock. A compulsory installation complement although with some nuances, as pointed out by the Director of the DGT Pere Navarro. It is a device that measures alcohol in exhaled air, a lifelong breathalyser, but in this case it is interconnected with the

car’s starting system, so that if it detects that we have been drinking, it will not allow it to start up. For this, the vehicle must have a mechanism that allows this connection. Today very few vehicles carry it and most of them are intended for passenger transport. Well, starting in July, all vehicles approved by brands must have this pre-installation. But, to be clear what that means, it is when a manufacturer launches a new vehicle, or carries out a significant redesign. It will not be mandatory in existing vehicles, not even those currently for sale in showrooms. Initially, from July 6 will be mandatory for M2 and M3 vehicles which are launched or redesigned. These are passenger cars with more than 8 seats plus the driver. The M2 have a maximum authorised mass of five tons, above

are M3. These are known as buses and coaches. As of July 6, 2022, all M2 and M3 vehicles that have the appropriate mechanism must have a breathalyser, but as of July 6, 2024 all new M2 and M3 must leave the factory with this new mechanism that connects the breathalyser with the starting system. Pere Navarro himself has declared that at the moment it is not on his agenda to extend it to other types of vehicles. It is an ADAS intended for passenger transport in Spain, currently one of the safest in Europe. Alcohol is still present in between 30 and 50% of fatal incidents, and its use is predicted to reduce up to 65% of the number of alcohol-related incidents. Today it is a device that is already mandatory in France, Italy, Belgium and Poland.

SUmmER PIZZa RECIPES

Easy Summer Vegetable Pizzas

Ingredients 4 individual baked naan, store-bought or homemade 5 tablespoons olive oil + more for drizzling 2 small green or yellow zucchini 1 sweet red pepper, halved, seeded, and sliced into thin strips 2 ounces grated Parmesan cheese (about 1/2 cup) 8 ounces fontina cheese, grated (2 cups loosely packed) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 2 large handfuls of arugula 12 cherry tomatoes, halved 1 small handful fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces 1 small handful fresh mint leaves, torn into pieces 2 to 3 teaspoons red wine vinegar Method 1. Preheat the oven: 2. Set a rack on the upper shelf of the oven and preheat it to 500°F. 3. Cut the zucchini in lengthwise ribbons: 4. Using a vegetable peeler and starting from the stem and working to the bottom, peel off and discard the outer skin from one side of the squash. Peel off more ribbons until you reach the seeds. Turn the squash over and repeat. Discard the core. 5. Warm the naan briefly: 6. On a rimmed baking sheet, spread out the naan loaves. Brush the tops of each naan with 1 tablespoon of

oil. Bake for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the oven. 7. Top the pizzas: 8. Sprinkle each naan with about 2 tablespoons of Parmesan and 1/2 cup grated fontina. Top with 6 to 7 zucchini ribbons and several pepper slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle with a little oil. Make the salad topper: 1. In a bowl, toss the arugula, basil, mint, and tomatoes with 1 tablespoon of oil. Sprinkle with vinegar and more salt and pepper, to taste. Toss together. You’ll top the pizzas with this salad after the pizza bakes. Bake and serve the pizzas: 1. Place the pizzas in the oven and bake for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the cheese melts. Remove and drizzle with a little more olive oil. Top with the salad and serve.

Classic Pasta Primavera

Ingredients 1 heaping cup broccoli florets 4 asparagus spears, trimmed and cut into 1-inch segments 1/2 cup snow peas 1/2 pound angel hair pasta or spaghetti 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 small zucchini, diced 3 Roma or other paste tomatoes, seeded and diced 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable stock

1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup peas, fresh or frozen 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 12 basil leaves, chopped Kosher salt Method 1. Blanch the broccoli, asparagus, snow peas: 2. Get a large pot of water boiling. Salt it well. It should taste like the sea. Fill a large bowl with ice water. Boil the broccoli for 1 minute. 3. Add the asparagus and boil another minute. Add the snow peas and boil for 30 more seconds. 4. Remove all the vegetables and plunge them into the ice water. Once they’re cool, drain in a colander. 5. If you want, you can boil your pasta in the same pot you boiled the vegetables in, or you can start over and boil new water; I use the same water. 6. Sauté the zucchini and garlic, then add the tomatoes: 7. In a large sauté pan, heat the butter over medium-high heat. When the butter is hot, add the garlic and zucchini and sauté 1 minute. 8. Add the diced tomatoes and sauté another 2 minutes, stirring often. 9. Add the stock, cream, blanched vegetables, and peas: 10. Pour in the chicken or vegetable stock and turn the heat to high to bring it to a boil.

11. Add the cream and toss in all the vegetables you boiled, plus the peas. Stir to combine. 12. Turn the heat down until the cream-chicken broth mixture is just simmering, not boiling. 13. Add the Parmesan: 14. Add the Parmesan cheese and stir to combine. If the sauce seems too thick—it should be pretty thick, but not gloppy— add some more chicken broth, cream or water. 15. Boil the pasta: 16. If you are using spaghetti, you

will want to start cooking it before you begin sautéing the garlic and zucchini. Angel hair will only need 1 to 2 minutes to cook, vermicelli or spaghetti can take 8 to 12 minutes. 17. Toss the pasta and serve: 18. As soon as the pasta is done, transfer it with tongs into the sauce and stir to combine. 19. Add the basil now, and taste for salt. Add salt if needed. Grind some black pepper over everything and serve immediately.

July 2022 Presidents Day For a small society, there was a very good turnout of twenty-four players for our President’s day. Our popular President Barrie Hopkinson had made sure our buggies were well watered and also provided a variety of many prizes. I have to say that La Marquesa golf club, our venue for the day was in excellent condition. Barrie chose the first hole for the longest drive, he teed off first and hit a screamer down the middle which was unbeaten. We returned to our sponsor bar Little Leias by Consum in Quesada for our prize-giving when Ian, Lisa, and the staff prepared a mixture of sandwiches for us, followed by a few liquid refreshments was more than welcome on this hot and sunny day, if you haven’t been to Little Leias bar your really missing out as the food there is delicious. Onto our prize-giving our NTPs who each received a bottle of wine provided by Little Leias were Allan Collis on the sixth, Pete List on the eighth, Nick Monks took the sixteenth with Terry Sharley our Vice

Captain winning the seventeenth, Barrie Hopkinson won the longest drive and also took the NTP in two on the fifteenth hole, best front nine winner with nineteen points was Rob Sherrat winning a bottle of wine that had been provided by Little Leias, the best back nine winner with eighteen points was Pete List, in third place with thirty-three points winning again on count back from John Rush was our Vice President Ian Allison, our second-place winner being Nick Monks with thirty-five points, but our winner on the day with thirty-nine points ( and a cut in handicap ) was Steve Taggart. We had one winner for our twos pot who was Phil Harris, our soccer cards were won by Nick Monks and Rita Ball. Finally I would like to thank first Barrie Hopkinson for making his day one to remember and also our Sponsors Little Leias for looking after us on our return to their bar. The famous race from Tabarca to Santa Pola brought together 1,300 swimmers on Sunday morning, ready to tackle the 5900 metre crossing. The race has not been held since 2019 due to the pandemic so swimmers were keen to take part, a lottery system in place to grant participants the chance to compete. Concerns about high winds expected on Sunday turned out to be unfounded as sea conditions on the morning of the race were actually good. Swimmers began to arrive shortly after 5am and were transported by boat across to the island, ready for the race to begin at half past seven. The first swimmer to make landfall was Valencian Daniel Ponce, who was a favourite to win. The first woman was Nadia Rodríguez who completed the gruelling swim in just one hour and 29 minutes. Swimmers from more than 15 countries from all over the world took part. The security and safety of swimmers was paramount and throughout the race, participants were accompanied by over a hundred canoeists and support boats with the Red Cross, Guardia Civil, Local Police

Torrevieja swimmer Karin Gullón Malmkvist after successfully finishing the race

and Protection Civil on hand in case of emergency. Each swimmer was supplied with an electronic placement chip, a safety whistle, bright orange buoy and cap for the crossing. At kilometre 3, there was a water stop for swimmers and buoys every 100 metres marked the way.

Another week has passed in the world of football and all we have to cling to is a few Premier League transfers and a bucketfull of rumours to pass the time. Are United actually going to get anyone over the line? Frenkie is taking forever to say yes. Tyrell Malacia’s imminent move from Holland seems to be going cold. Christian Eriksen hasn’t made his mind up yet. Antony and Lisandro Martinez are still Ajax players. Maybe Ten Hag and the recruitment crew might want to consider players without a Dutch connection. They are way ahead of us as Serge Gnabry seems to be on the nonDutch list. He is out of contract at Bayern in 12 months time, meaning his value is at a low of just £60m this window. Arsenal are sniffing around as well, more than happy to show the world they made a £60m error by letting Gnabry go for nothing in the first place. It might be easier for United just to recall players who are out on loan - like Sergio Romero for example. He’ll be the ideal backup to David de Gea after Dean Henderson was sent out to Nottingham Forest on loan where he’ll get a lot of shot-stopping practice. Or, if they are struggling to sign anyone at all - here’s a clever idea to improve the side instantly. Bite Ronaldo’s arm off on his request to leave the club immediately. CR7 has had a look at Eric Ten Hag in action and decided his future belongs elsewhere. This is wonderful news to Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Sporting and Roma who are believed to be sniffing around the commercial opportunity. It’s also wonderful news for United if they can be brave enough to let him leave. This summer’s most-wanted list is topped by Leeds’ Brazilian Neymarlite, Raphinha. Chelsea want him,

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 21st of June we fished the 4th rounds of both the Presidents cup and the summer series at the El Bosquet complex. We fished pegs A1 to 7, 28 to 38 and 18 to 22 with five sections of 3 anglers. The weather was not too hot in fact it started to rain at one point and fishing was at least bearable. Winner on the day was Nick Bastock. Drawn on peg 28 he fished across with pellets up in the water for a great weight of 40.66kg made up of small carp and mullet. In second place and continuing

but then they are keen on Ronaldo, Neymar and Ousmane Dembele too. Barcelona want him, but they are keen on Neymar, Ronaldo and let Dembele leave on a free. Arsenal would love him, but did you see who else wants him? He’s not going to the Emirates when he could be coming off the bench each week at Stamford Bridge. Having officially waved goodbye to Fernandinho who set sail back to Brazil last week, Man City are about to invest £100m in his replacement - Kalvin Phillips. You have to admire Pep’s commitment to overpaying for English footballers. Slightly more off the beaten track is City’s new number two keeper. Stefan Ortega (no, me neither) has signed on a free from some team in Bundesliga. New Chelsea supremo Todd Boehly is still determined to get this player trading concept fully firing across Europe. He is calling Juventus daily, trying to explain that Timo Werner for Matthijs de Ligt is a wonderful swapsie. Those of us who grew up doing Panini swapsies in the playground are calling this deal what it is. Bad. For Juventus, that is. Boehly also sees buying players not good enough to play for the champions every week as a way of making Chelsea champions. He wants City’s Nathan Ake, Oleksandr Zinchenko and, of course, Raheem Sterling to head south.

his great run of form was Richard King. Drawn on peg 5 he fished the method feeder with wafter for 33.06kg of mainly carp. Third place was taken by another old master Bill Reade. Bill used some very large maggots, larger than wasp grub that he had found in his keepnet, he has no idea from what they were from but he used them very effectively for 26.620kg. The pairs match was surprisingly a close-run affair but the narrow winners were Nick Bastock and Alan Hill with 51.12kg. Other section winners were Lenny Bolton with 17.02kg and Barry Smith with7.24kg.

We must not forget that Mohamed Salah’s contract negotiations at Liverpool were nothing to do with money - though it would only be right to suspect that the £18m a year on offer helped signatures to land on contracts. Salah stays at Anfield, picking up Sadio’s wages now he’s gone. He’s probably getting Minamino’s as well, as he’s been sold to Monaco for £15m. Tottenham are approaching this window slightly differently to the last one - rather than waiting to the final hours to actually do anything, they are getting themselves fitted up ASAP this time out. Richarlison has joined for Everton - the fee a mere £60m, which equates to £1m per time

Rods N reels The following day we revisited the complex and 12 anglers took part so we fished 3 sections of 4. The winner was once again Nick Bastock. This time he was drawn on peg 5 and he took advantage of the good draw to weigh 34.92kg. This time he fished maggot on the pole. In second place was Mr Pastry himself, Terry Brindley. He fished his usual dirty great lump of paste about a metre off the far bang to catch decent carp and mullet for 32.26kg. In third place was myself, Ian Brown. Drawn on the fancied peg 26 things did not initially go to plan and after struggling with a strong sidewind I managed to weigh 22.28kg. These were all small carp caught in the deeper water about a metre off the far bank with corn. For further details of these matches and standings in the competitions please visit our website www.abbeyangling.es Ian Brown

he rolls on the floor half-dead on his debut only to recover instantly when he doesn’t get the free-kick. Spurs have also contacted Jesse Lingard’s ‘people’ to see whether he’d rather feed off Harry Kane or Michail Antonio next season. I suspect Antonio might just be a better match for Lingard on and off the pitch. Clement Lenglet could well be joining from Barca too. Joelinton would love Neymar to come and play for Newcastle - no word from Neymar on his interest levels or if he even knows who Joelinton is. Eddie Howe has finally got Sven Botman through the door though, for a cool £32m. Speaking of central defenders, Everton’s cunning plan to shore up their leaky defence is to sign one who got relegated last season. James Tarkowski has come in from Burnley to put pressure on Michael Keane which will probably result in Keane shinning it into the crowd just like every other time he is put under a bit of pressure. Wolves have failed in their plan to flog Adama Traore to Barcelona following his loan deal. Barcelona may be a bit stupid in the market but even they noticed there’s not a lot of end product there. In France, Jorge Sampaoli quit Marseille frustrated at their inability to do anything decent in the market - the same day as Arsenal wild child Guendozi made his switch permanent. Coincidence?
