Big plans for Torreta III As many as 200 local residents gathered at 10am on Sunday morning at Restaurante Meson Galea in torreta iii in torrevieja to meet the Mayor and a team of local councillors. the meeting was called by the Asociación de vecinos de la torreta iii

to give residents the chance to hear plans for a long awaited regeneration of the area. Residents have been campaigning for input from the town hall for an area that has been much neglected since its creation in the late 70s. Most

recently the residents group took the town hall to court to try to force the local government to address serious deficiencies in basic infrastructure. in the end the Supreme Court absolved the town hall of having to pay the €9m euro claim by residents. homeowners have been demanding for many years that the town hall take charge of the redevelopment of this sector of torrevieja, built between the end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties. the main issue is that the town hall says it cannot invest money into areas which are considered to be private land – as much of torreta iii is still classified under. the urbanisation was built on the cusp of a real estate boom in the late 70s but never properly urbanised by the promoter. Built initially as a ‘bungalow hotel’

style holiday village buyers flocked to purchase the houses located next to the pink salt lake with people from Germany, Belgium and the uK settling in the area in the early 80s. the bulk of the buyers were holiday Continued on page 11

Health officials turn to school dinners to tackle obesity in children A new decree will prohibit the sale of unhealthy products in schools, hospitals or universities - A third of minors between 2 and 17 years of age in the Community have weight problems. obesity continues to rise in the Valencian Community. half of adults already have problems with extra weight and third of minors between the ages of 2 and 17 are already overweight or obese. the Generalitat Valenciana wants to put an end to the situation by guaranteeing that healthy menus are served in schools through a draft decree that be set in motion in a few months. When it comes into force for the first time in the Valencian Community, schools, universities, hospitals and, in general, all collective catering spaces will be obliged to provide healthy food. “What used to be a recommendation, will now become mandatory for all types of centres and with a system of

sanctions in case of non-compliance,” said isaura navarro, regional secretary of Public health and the Public health System of the Ministry of health. the new rules regulates how the menus should be prepared in various areas. in the case of schools, they must adhere to the Mediterranean diet. they will have to include a salad every day and five or more servings per week of greens and vegetables. Fresh fruit will have to be present four or more times a week and schools will have to offer three different varieties a week – not an apple for dessert every day. legumes will have to be on school menus at least twice a week. eggs and fish should be offered once or twice a week. in the case of fish, at least one of the servings per week will be oily fish, although swordfish, bluefin tuna, and some others will not be allowed due to their high mercury content. Meat will have to be offered twice a week and would preferably be white.

Pasta is reserved for once a week and fried and precooked foods such as croquettes or pizzas will be on children’s dinner trays at most three times a month, and the same goes for pre-made sauces. the rule requires cooking with extra virgin or virgin olive oil and that water offered is to come from the public supply. Mineral water bottles are to be reserved for exceptional cases, such as excursions outside the centre. Bread should also be offered daily as a side dish.

Driving Licence Negotiation Update

the British embassy in Spain took to social media to update Britons on the current situation regarding driving licences in Spain. For those readers who don’t have access to Facebook, we thought it would be useful to repeat the message in print here: “A brief message to keep you up to date with the driving licence negotiations. We know that progress is slower than both you and we would like, and that is frustrating. We are still working through the final technicalities with the Spanish Government and hope to have a more substantive update next week. We are very aware of the difficulties that this is causing some of you and that the expected heatwave this coming week could be particularly challenging. Resolving this remains our top priority and we will continue to update you on this channel.” For the latest information, follow https://www.facebook.com/ BritsinSpain

State of local parks criticised the Popular Party (PP) in orihuela has voiced its concern over the lack of cleanliness and abandonment that the parks, streets and gardens that the orihuela districts and Coast are suffering - particularly over the last 15 days. Parks are riddled with weeds, unemptied bins, fallen tree branches and generally appear unhealthy and dirty. All this is the result of the lack of foresight of the department of infrastructure for not renewing the management agreement with the municipal company ildo, an action that has been formally denounced by the PP. Víctor Valverde (PP), explained that “knowing that the agreement was going to end, they did not have the foresight to carry it out in time, so we find the streets of the districts in an unfortunate state where, in many cases, the bushes exceed one meter in height, causing the local residents to complain about the neglect of the orihuela City Council. “As of today and knowing that this spring it has rained a lot so the weeds were going to grow abundantly, the infrastructure department still does not have a machine hired to clear the kilometres and kilometres of rural roads that we have. the undergrowth in some of them makes transit through these roads a danger due to the

narrowness that it has left in them, in addition to the lack of visibility that it causes,” Victor Valverde said. Senor Valverde also highlighted the situation that is taking place in orihuela Costa where the parks, gardens and green areas need constant maintenance. he claims that the local government has ‘allowed themselves the luxury of diverting personnel from the current contract with the Actua company, which performs maintenance and conservation functions, so that these workers clean the beach access walkways on a daily basis’. “this means that the general maintenance is not being carried out, at a time when our coast should be in all its splendour for the tourists who come and those who move to their second residence. We find a lack of

foresight and organisation of the departments of Beaches and infrastructures because they know that the walkways have to be cleaned, it happens every year, they have had enough time to make a contract with a company that would take care of that cleaning, but failed to do so.” Victor Valverde explained that in order to attend to meet these needs, it is not necessary to have an approved budget, they can be completed with current expenses from the infrastructure department, which is in charge of executing them. ‘this department, which has been in the hands of Ciudadanos for seven years, should have planned the different actions in advance because every spring the bushes grow and every summer the walkways on the beaches are cleaned’ he said.

Criminal gang busted Record drugs haul Spanish police have seized a record six tonnes of marijuana after dismantling a plantation near Barcelona in the biggest-ever seizure of the substance in Spain. the operation saw police confiscating “just over six tonnes of marijuana, among which were 3.5 tonnes of buds in vacuum-packed thermal bags,” the national Police and Guardia Civil police said in a joint statement. the investigation began in March 2021 when officers discovered a 32-hectare (80-acre) plot in Vilassar de Mar, some 30 kilometres up the coast from Barcelona which was being used for growing hemp, or cannabis plants, on an industrial scale. But the signs put up around the site suggesting it had a legal purpose were false, with police quickly realising it was being used for the large-scale

cultivation of marijuana. thousands of plants were being grown in different warehouses and greenhouses, all carefully monitored by more than 100 cameras, police said. the site, which was also illegally tapping into the power grid, had been operational since at least 2018. during the operation, police arrested five people, who were charged with crimes against public health and electricity fraud. they also found 17 kilos of hashish resin, which the gang were starting to produce. After decades as the gateway for Moroccan hashish to enter europe, Spain is now seeing illegal plantations multiply as the country morphs into a cannabis production hub, attracting criminal gangs from across the continent.

national Police officers have dismantled a criminal organisation dedicated to the robbery of luxury villas, including the house of a well-known soccer player and several properties in Malaga, Pilar de la horadada, Murcia and ibiza. the gang has been connected to at least 15 robberies in the provinces of Alicante, Malaga and Murcia. the seven-strong Albanian gang targeted

the homes of businessmen or famous people. it is alleged they had just committed a robbery in a villa in ibiza where they stole luxury items worth around three million euro.

Drunk driver mows down pedestrians in Pilar

Agamed digital bill initiative results in €2k donation

A drunk driver, six times over the limit, has ploughed into a group of pedestrians in Pilar de la horadada. the man lost control of his vehicle at a pedestrian crossing mowing down two sisters, aged 46 and 51, and another woman aged 46. All were taken by ambulance to torrevieja with multiple injuries and the driver was arrested on the spot.

AGAMed launched an initiative at the end of last year to help the most vulnerable groups and promote sustainability among citizens. it promised to donate 1 euro for each customer who signed up for a digital water bill. the campaign concluded this week in which more than €2,000 was raised, donated to Alimentos Solidarios a charity which provides food to families and individuals living in poverty. last week, Jorge Ballesta, managing director of Agamed; Gemma Cruz, deputy manager of Agamed; and the deputy mayor of the City Council of torrevieja, Rosario Martínez, handed over the donation to José Antonio Vidal, president of the Alimentos Solidarios. At the same time, they were given a tour of the facilities. Agamed said, “this initiative

contributes to a sustainable, fair and inclusive recovery and has been a call to action for citizens so that, through a gesture as sustainable as requesting the digital invoice, they can contribute to improving the situation of many families in vulnerable situations”. With the digital invoice, which can be requested through the Customer Area of the website www.agamed.es, users can consult their bills in a flexible, easy and secure way, without the need to print and reducing Co2 emissions compared to other billing formats.

Masks ‘recommended’ indoors Woman drives moped national health authorities in Spain have once again recommended wearing a mask in indoor areas, but have not made this compulsory as yet. Minister Carolina darías says an increase in Covid cases means it is ‘strongly advisable’ to pop a mask on before entering shops, banks, post offices and public-sector offices, as it has already been seen that doing so helps reduce viral contagion. Regional governments in Madrid, Catalunya and the centre-northern Castilla y león had already made these recommendations to residents ahead of Sra darías’ announcement. At present, masks are only compulsory on public transport or in healthcare settings such as hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes, pharmacies, fertility clinics, and similar, whilst individual workplaces have been given authority to decide for themselves whether to require their staff to do so. outside of healthcare environments, public-facing employees have generally not been obliged to wear masks at work, although many choose to do so, and a significant minority of residents continue to put a mask on when entering a shop. in general, public health experts do not believe there is any need to take further measures, much less apply restrictions of the type seen throughout practically the whole of 2020 and 2021. one of the main reasons for the rising number of Covid cases is that the omicron strain and its variants is much more contagious than its predecessors – although Sra darías’ department explains that it is generally less serious. People testing positive, and being admitted to hospital, are increasing,

wrong way on AP7

but the latter rarely needs to be moved to intensive care and there is far less overall danger to life. over half of those testing positive in the past week are aged over 60 – an estimated 1 percent of the population of this age group is infected – although the severity, and which exact ages are most affected, have not been detailed. Clearly, a healthy 60-something catching Covid is less worrying than a frail 90-something, or a person of any age who has pre-existing medical conditions that could be gravely aggravated by a respiratory infection. Vaccines third doses were approved for all adults at the end of 2021, and were given out in the same order as the first and second jabs, meaning everyone will have been able to get a booster by now if they wanted to. that said, unlike the first two doses, residents were

not summoned individually by text message for specific appointments, so some may not have realised they could have their booster. Sra darías has urged anyone who has only had two – or, in the case of those who had the single-dose Janssen formula, one – to contact their local health centre as soon as they can to find out how to get dose number three. Covid cases dropped dramatically after the first two doses, as did the severity of those who became infected. Fourth doses were being administered to everyone aged over 80 until two months ago, when the government opted to halt the process and wait for the release of new formulae adapted to protect against the newer omicron variants. once these are available – probably by early autumn – the dose-four roll-out will restart, but for the whole population, and again in descending age order.

the driver of a moped that was travelling in the wrong direction on the AP-7 motorway, in Redován has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. the police received several calls from

concerned motorists and the driver, a 55 yearold Spanish woman from Benejúzar, was pulled over before causing an accident. She explained she had got confused and

entered the wrong slip road and ended up going the wrong way. She faces a sentence of between six months to two years in prison and the loss of her driving licence.

Local emergencies emergency service in the local area had had a busy weekend with numerous calls outs for the ambulance service. in la marina, a 74 year-old man drowned and was pulled unconscious from the water. lifeguards began to give resuscitation, which was continued by paramedics once the ambulance arrived.

however, there was no response and the man was declared dead at the scene. Meanwhile, a 55-yearold woman has been rescued from the Barranco de la Suegra area on the Cruz de la Muela climb in orihuela. According to the emergency Coordination Centre, the woman fainted and was

suffering from heatstroke and had to be airlifted from the scene. She was taken to Alicante General hospital.

Torrevieja cleans up its act

A new waste collection service contract has come into operation in torrevieja which will see improved urban hygiene, road cleaning and maintenance. Mayor of torrevieja eduardo dolón announced that over the next two weeks, there will be a significant increase in the workforce with the number of contracted employees dedicated to cleaning and maintenance increased from 295 to 407, an increase of 112 jobs. the new contract was announced a press conference this week by mayor dolón, alongside the councillor for urban Cleaning, Carmen Gómez. the town hall signed an agreement with ACCionA SeRViCioS uRBAnoS, S.l. which will see the company looking after the town’s “Waste collection, transport to landfill, street cleaning and cleaning and maintenance of the coast” service for the next 15 years. the contract is valued at 24,368,664 euros per year (VAt included), torrevieja town hall set to pay Acciona a total of 365,529,960 euros (VAt included) over the duration of the total contract period. Starting this week, Acciona will begin to place orders for containers, litter bins, uniforms, etc. in approximately a month’s time, newbins will begin to be placed throughout the municipality of torrevieja, and if everything goes according to plan, they will all be in place in about 3 months time. in addition to the 2,033 litter bins already in existence throughout the

municipality of torrevieja, 2,467 more litter bins will be added, which will bring the total to 4,500 litter bins. dolón also revealed that it is expected that in 3-4 months the new containers (the larger bins for household waste) will begin to arrive for installation. until the new containers are available, Acciona will supply some ‘transition’ containers. once complete, there will be 3,270 containers, an increase of 296 on the current amount. Acciona also plans increases in other areas including: - garbage trucks to increase from 14 to 24 - platform trucks with crane to increase from 1 to 7 - electric pressure washer vans to increase from 2 to 8 - 10 electric vans, which were not in the previous contract - other electric vans, which increase from 7 to 15 - blowers, which increase from 12 to 18 - 1 gum remover machine, which was not part of the previous contract - 2 mobile eco-parks, which were not part of the previous contract Soon, with the increase in the workforce, there will be manual sweeping in the various urbanizations, from Monday to Friday, and in the urban area and in the district of la Mata from Monday to Sunday. in addition, as part of the new service, a ‘review sweep’ will be carried out from Monday to Sunday

in the areas with the highest influx of residents, from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. the litter bin collection service on the beaches is tripled, including the dog beach, and the daily cleaning of the dog beach is included in the contract. the collection of paper-cardboard will be increased with a night route throughout the year and a door-todoor commercial paper-cardboard collection service will be launched and, now, in high season, there will also be a service on Sundays. All businesses that want this service to be provided must communicate it to the urban Cleaning department, which will indicate the

days and method of collection. the collection of large waste items will be carried out from Monday to Sunday, increasing in the urbanizations with one extra team. the mayor of torrevieja has appealed to citizens to call 966 702390 instead of leaving waste items (such as sofas or mattresses) in the streets in an uncontrolled manner. he said he would be grateful if people telephoned to avail of this new doorto-door collection service. the collection of garden waste can also be included in the new doorto-door system. Citizen information campaigns will be carried out shortly to communicate this to members of the

public. eduardo dolón also reported that the ecopark site and its adjoining plot will e updated. Soon, there will also be a dog excrement collection service with a specialized motorcycle and a gum removal service. the mayor has announced that during the remainder of 2022, three citizen awareness campaigns will be carried out “because without citizen collaboration the success of this service is not possible and i know that i can count on all citizens so that torrevieja, starting next week, work to become a national benchmark for a clean city”.

Loggerhead turtle tries to lay eggs on La Mata Beach

Around a quarter to twelve at night on Saturday, a child spotted a large sea turtle on the beach, about 7 meters away from the shore, near a beach bar where his parents and other customers were sitting enjoying a cool evening. When several people came to look, the turtle turned away and went back to sea without laying her eggs. it is possible she is the same specimen that has already tried to spawn three times in the Region of Murcia (two of them on beaches in the Calblanque Regional Park and another time in la Manga). Female loggerheads crawl out of the sea at night to nest. they make their way up just past the high tide line and dig a deep round hole using their two rear flippers. the mother then lays her eggs in the hole and covers it back up with sand before leaving. they typically lay 80 to 120 ping pong-sized eggs. they typically incubate for 55 to 60 days before they hatch. they hatch in unison and make their way toward the water using the reflection of the moon and stars on the water for guidance. Coastal municipalities of Guardamar del Segura, elche, Santa Pola, orihuela, Pilar de la horadada and torrevieja are on high alert at the moment for

sightings of these endandgered turtles. Many towns have put up posters, alluding to the possible presence of spawning sea turtles. there was one such poster in the beach bar in la Mata so the person in charge called 112, whose operators notified the university of Valencia which called municipal biologist from the department of the environment of the torrevieja City Council, Juan Antonio Pujol, who went to the beach a few minutes later. this time it was not possible for the turtle to successfully lay her eggs – it was a very early attempt, near a beach bar, when

there were still people in the area, but the season continues, and it is hoped that this or another female turtle could come to any of our local beaches (including the most urban ones) in the next few nights and for this reason it’s important to know how to act: • call 112 • do not approach or let anyone else approach the animal and, • above all, do not disturb it or its eggs the photo above is of the trail left by the sea turtle on the beach of la Mata (torrevieja), shortly before 12 midnight on Saturday.

home owners from Madrid, Castilla y leon and Castilla la Mancha. even before the Supreme Court rejected the appeal by residents, the town hall tabled an out of court resolution and have been working with residents – sometimes harmoniously, sometimes not so – to find a solution. At Sunday morning’s meeting, it was clear the town hall is keen to address the issue and finally, has a concrete plan of action. As well as the Mayor, eduardo dolón, present was the municipal technician Victor Costa who presented the plans, which were projected onto a big screen for the gathered residents to see. Councillors present were

Rosario Chazarra, deputy Mayor and Councillor for tourism, diana Box, Councillor for Sport (and responsible for addressing pest control such as mosquitoes), Federico Alarcón, Councillor for Security and Sandra Sánchez, Councillor for infrastructure and Planning. the meeting was long – each item on the agenda and each question and answer in the Q&A afterwards was patiently translated into Spanish, German, english and French for the benefit of the multinational audience. Victor Costa began by introducing the project and emphasising that the town hall is committed to reurbanising the area, confirming that the ‘pre project’ is now underway

to fix issues and improve the overall area. the project will be three phase – first to address fixing the public streets and green areas, second, to address interior streets and third to tackle flood defences. the plan for the area, shown on screen to the audience, dated from 1974 and contrasted greatly with the reality of the area as it is now. Addressing the first point in the plan, Costa said that the main objective is to reurbanise torreta iii to bring it into the 21st century. Plans include resurfacing roads, updating electricity supply and phone/ internet cables (these will be placed underground while works progress) and to improve lighting and the

sewerage network. Pavements will be fixed and made more accessible. Communal spaces will be improved with the emphasis on creating areas that people will actually want to use. Costa said “We want people to feel that this is ‘their neighbourhood’.” there was mention of allotments, a composting area and an intention to revitalise the area from a social perspective. Moving on to the second phase of the plan, Costa explained the intention of the town hall to tackle the ‘internal’ part of each block in torreta iii. A trickier process as it is not possible to invest public funds into what is technically a private area. however, while phase one is being rolled out in the public areas, the town hall plans to fix the administrative issues to allow this, a fundamental part of the plan, to proceed. Costa explained that they are currently working on the documentation to allow them to tackle the interior areas. in order to make the change from ‘private’ to ‘public’ the town hall will need the agreement of all residents – although it was not made clear how they will solicit this agreement or what will happen if there are residents that cannot be reached. the works will take a total of five years to complete and it is envisaged that when complete, torreta iii will be completely revitalised. the Mayor gave an update on the progress of the €3m flood defence works underway at torrealmedros, explaining that although there will be a holding tank for flood waters, residents need not be concerned about it becoming a breeding ground

for mosquitoes as, once rainwater has been collected, it will be taken away immediately or the next day to be cleaned and repurposed for watering the town’s many green areas and gardens. the Mayor also thanked the residents association, explaining that they have been working together for many years and more to come to this point today. the meeting was opened to the floor and despite pleas from the government team for questions to remain ‘on topic’ there was the inevitable array of questions about other issues which the team did their best to answer. one pertinent question concerned maintenance with lady remarking that it’s all well and good making improvements, as long as the improvements are maintained. this gave the Mayor a chance to reference the town’s new maintenance contract which will see over 100 extra cleaning employees and a fleet of new vehicles acquired to tackle urban cleanliness. in terms of a timeline, the Mayor hopes to have approval for the plan in August or September of this year with works set to begin in october or november. Just before the Mayor left to attend another engagement (the councillors stayed on to answer many more questions), Marisol from the residents association took to the microphone to thank the Mayor for his work, to apologise that in the past she had doubted him, and to confirm that she had every confidence in him and the town hall that these works would be carried out, as promised, for the good of everyone.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP it has been a fairly dramatic week for the uK, with most of the attention being placed on the events culminating with Boris Johnson’s ultimate resignation, yesterday lunchtime. At times, the storyline was more akin to Coronation rather than downing Street, but that slew of high-profile cabinet resignations, ultimately left Boris with less hope than the legendary Black Knight in Monty Python. them’s the breaks, as Boris candidly said in his resignation speech. Whilst Johnson will now remain as prime minister until his successor as leader of the tory party is confirmed, from a market perspective the focus will now be on what sort of relationship the new leader is likely to have with the likes of the eu, and what policies they will push for in terms of reviving the economy, and dealing with those shocking increases to the cost of living. Johnson had been about to announce a range of tax cuts in an attempt to deal with some of those issues. From a sterling perspective, well there was a mini bounce leading up to the resignation speech, which was probably being driven by the market thinking that all change is good change. GBP/ uSd rallied back over 1.2000 for a while, having been as low as 1.1875 and GBP/euR moved back over 1.1800. interestingly enough, the latter had the bigger move, and that is perhaps partly down to the single currency fighting its own battle against the dollar as it nears parity. looking into next week, there is a slew of keynote uK economic releases in the middle of the week, with industrial & Manufacturing production as well as the latest trade Balance. the latter is growing in significance in the postBrexit era, given the difficulties our exporters

have been facing getting anything bigger than an ex-prime minister out of the building. EURO Confirmation of the eCB’s expected 25bps hike later this month has continued to trickle through from various members of the eCB throughout this week. We certainly can’t complain about their lack of forward guidance. Although we can never exactly rule out a bigger move, we think that the eCB are far more occupied with those increasing borrowing costs for the more indebted nations, than the surging inflation in the region. to that end, the weaker oil price (see CAd) might just help turn the tide. next Wednesday’s German inflation print might be a little too early to see any impact just yet. As we said above (see GBP), there has been a big focus within currency traders on euR/ uSd, as it nears ever-closer to the dreamy world of parity. 1.000 may be a big psychological level, but it also plays an important role in currency markets, as it is often around these key psychological levels that option traders place large bets, so if nothing else, we should expect some fireworks around four months earlier than usual this year, if parity is tested. the last time that euR/uSd traded below parity was way back in 2002. Aside from the stronger uSd, the big increase in wholesale gas prices this week has also weighed on the single currency, given the challenging outlook for the region in the energy complex. the expanding interest rate differential between the u.S and eZ is also a big driver for euR/uSd specifically, as well as worries over an impending recession in the region. time to dig your heals in Christine.

Ask the Mayor Put your questions directly to torrevieja Mayor eduardo dolón by emailing aoife@ costablancapeople.com

Mr Mayor, there are prevalent vast numbers of empty or abandoned domestic properties. As a consequence, everyone loses: the local authority, local businesses, the property owners, and tenants denied choice in a price-competitive market. Empty properties are the result of an aggressive policy heavily weighted in favour of rogue tenants. Is there anything that can be done to bring balance to this negative sector? – Michael Walsh, Journalist. dear Michael Walsh I agree that when properties are abandoned we all lose. The law concerning the problem with rough tenants is not municipal competence so unfortunately we are not able to regulate this. What we have done from the town hall is that we have contracted a company to help us locate owners of properties and to help in the process of transferring to owners that are interested to take over the properties. Sometimes an owner has passed away and

the inheritance has never been executed. For the heirs it might seem as a complex process to take over and hopefully by having a company helping we can cut down on problems with abandoned properties. Also I would like to mention what we can all do to make sure that owners can be located is to assure that our contact details are always updated. It is important that we make sure that all entities are able to get in contact with us. Make sure that your bank, the SUMA-office, the water company, electricity company, and the community of owners have your details if they need to contact you. Also it is a good idea to leave your details with the neighbours so if they detect an incident with your property then they are able to

contact you. Also you can leave a power of attorney to a fiscal representative or somebody you trust so that they are able to act on your behalf if anything needs doing in Spain when you are abroad. Finally also it is a good idea to plan what will happen to your property when you pass away. It is your right to make your will according to the rules of your nationality. In order to make the process easier in Spain then you can make sure that a will is registered in Spain. This is done by a notary. You can get your fiscal representative to help you. If there are problems in an abandoned property then you can contact the police or the town hall. Kind regards, your Mayor, eduardo dolón

Up to three weeks of wait to see doctor at local health centres the ‘summer wave’ of covid has coincided with a third of the workforce on holiday, creating a perfect storm. doctors at local health centres are overloaded, some being expected to see 60 patients in a day. one doctor in Alicante said, “it’s horrible. in addition to our usual patients, there are 10 or 15 who come without an appointment every day, so we end the day seeing 60 patients.” the current system overload means that in the Alicante province, some health centres are suffering delays of 20 days before they can offer a in person or even a telephone consultation. in doctors’ agendas, two patients are being scheduled simultaneously to try to get through the workload. one doctor working at a health centre in San Vicente del Raspeig said that covid is monopolising a good part of the working day, saying “More or less 40% of the patients i see daily is because they have the disease and in some shifts the figure is even higher.” one of the main reasons for a

consultation for covid is a worker requesting sick leave, a procedure that has once again filled doctors’ consultations with bureaucracy. “Workers continue to have to justify two- and three-day absences from their companies, so they inevitably end up having to ask for consultation to carry out this procedure,” said the doctor. during the last wave of covid, around Christmas time, the Ministry of health enabled mechanisms to speed up the process sick ‘certs’ for workers infected by covid. Among other measures, pharmacies were allowed to notify positive cases so that, in this way, the patient did not have to make an appointment with the GP. through the Ministry’s website, the patient could then request sick leave, which was granted simultaneously with a return to work seven days later. Currently, automatic sick leave due to covid has disappeared and is only given in case the patient is too ill to go to work. doctors can give a sick note for four days, but if the patient continues to feel unwell after this

period, the doctor must correct that ‘baja’ again, “so in the end it is more work for us”, say doctors. in autonomous communities such as Catalonia, the system of automatic sick leave has been reinstated, something that has not yet been considered in the Valencian Community. in the Valencian Community, the only measure that has been put in place at the moment is to reopen some vaccination points without an appointment for people who are missing a dose of the vaccine (see page 21). Fortunately, the new subvariants of omicron continue to cause mild effects, in which the most characteristic symptoms are fever, sore throat, general malaise and stomach problems. Another element that is contributing to the current situation being especially complicated is the high number of health professionals currently on sick leave themselves due to covid, specifically 466 in the province of Alicante, according to data provided by the Medical union.

Bull run returns to Pamplona More Ryanair disruption

Spain’s San Fermin Running of the Bulls festival got under way recently, held for the first time in three years after CoVidrelated disruption. the event in Pamplona began with the traditional “chupinazo” firework blast at noon. it comes after dozens of animal rights activists dressed as dinosaurs and were chased by fellow activists through the streets of the city the day before the event. Carrying signs reading “Bullfighting is Prehistoric”, the protests were an attempt to highlight what they see as the animal cruelty involved in the event. “Bullfighting is the long ritualised execution of bulls and

many tourists who come and do the bull-running don’t actually realise that the same bulls they’re running down a couple of streets with are later killed in the bull ring that day,” said Chelsea Monroe, PetA senior digital campaign officer. But the demonstrations do little to dampen enthusiasm for San Fermín, which normally sees Pamplona’s population of some 200,000 swell to around one million during peak days of the nine-day festival. Aída Gascón, director of Animanaturalis said the debate over the future of bullfighting in Spain has never been so alive. “the majority of society rejects bullfighting because they

consider it cruel, but there are still many political supporters”, said Gascón. Bullfighting is still immensely popular in Spain although the movement against it has gained much momentum in recent years. Bullfighting is banned only in the Canary islands although it is not practised much, or at all, in some other regions such as Catalonia and the Balearic islands, which include Mallorca, Menorca and ibiza. the animal rights groups cite culture ministry figures, saying 90 percent of Spaniards did not attend any festival event involving bulls in 2014-2015, the last year the issue was surveyed.

travellers could face more chaos after Spain’s Ryanair cabin crew voted to strike for another 12 days in July. Workers affiliated with two Spanish unions are set to walk out from 12th to 15th July, 18th to 21st July and 25th to 28th July. the new action follows weeks of chaos for the airline, which faced six days of strikes in recent weeks and was forced to cancel 10 Spanish flights last Saturday. Staff want a deal that “guarantees decent work conditions for all personnel” at the airline, the uSo and SitCPlA unions said in a joint statement. the strikes come as european airports and carriers struggle to cope with a surge in travel demand, with thousands of flights cancelled over the past month. Ryanair operates out of more than 20 airports in Spain. however, the budget carrier does not expect widespread disruption, a spokesperson said. But the Spanish unions claim otherwise. Both have threatened to coordinate action with other Ryanair staff in Belgium, France, italy and Portugal. A uSo spokesperson demanded that Ryanair executives “change their attitude” towards negotiations. the strike coincides with industrial action by easyJet staff, who will strike for nine days in July. Airports across the continent are also contending with workplace walkouts. last month, industrial action forced multiple budget airlines

- including Ryanair - to cancel flights to and from italy, while a thursday morning strike last week meant Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport had to scrap 100 flights. this month, hundreds of British Airways staff at london’s heathrow will vote on whether or not to walk off the job to protest pay conditions. GMB the union leading the uK strike action - has warned that British Airways will face a “gruelling summer of travel chaos” if the company doesn’t offer staff a pay hike. Roughly 191,000 european aviation workers have been made redundant over the pandemic. now, as travel demand

surges, airports and airlines are too short-staffed to handle the influx. the airline industry has launched a recruitment drive, but Air Council international - europe’s trade body for airports - predicts that delays are inevitable at two-thirds of european airports this summer. British Airways was forced to scrap 8,000 flights in its Marchoctober schedule this year, while easyJet has reduced its schedule by roughly 40 flights per day for the rest of June. Airports are also feeling the heat. Security delays at dublin Airport, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, and Manchester Airport have caused mammoth disruption for thousands of travellers.

20 year old assaults mother, Rojales Pantomime leaves her partner unconscious, Summer Social after argument A 20 year old man in Elche has been arrested by Local Police after a row between him and his mother escalated into violence. The man is accused of assaulting his mother and leaving the mother’s partner unconscious after an argument. The man is also said to have pushed one of the police officers down the stairs of an apartment building as they attempted to arrest him. The incident took place at the end of June. At around 11pm, neighbours could hear a baby screaming and called the police. On arrival, officers found what they described as “a visibly nervous man with the intention of leaving the building.” When asked if he was anything to do the incident

reported to 092, he claimed that he was unaware of it and that the noise had came from a specific floor, which raised officers’ suspicions. Therefore, they asked him to accompany them to his apartment, which he agreed to. However, upon entering the lift, the man suddenly pushed one of the officers out of the way and tried to escape. At this point he also threw one of the policemen down the stairs and tried to flee. The assaulted officer’s partner quickly and gave chase on foot until she managed to restrain the young man a few streets away, despite his resistance. Back at the apartment, police found the man’s mother with a

reddened cheekbone and a baby in her arms. According to her statement, everything had started with argument at the apartment where she lives with her partner and her three children. The arrested man is alleged to have hit her and pushed her. In one of the bedrooms, the mother’s partner was found on the floor semi-conscious. After he came around, officers managed to talk to him, and he claimed he had also been attacked by the young man, who is alleged to have grabbed him by the throat in a choke hold, after which he lost consciousness. Officers observed that the man had marks and bruises on his neck and knees.

Eamonn Holmes reignites ITV feud

Eamonn Holmes didn’t hold back as he picked up his first award since leaving This Morning last year. The presenter was all smiles as he attended the Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) Awards where he picked up news presenter of the year. He said he was “very proud” of the recognition after he started his brand new role on GB News where he hosts the channel’s new Breakfast With Eamonn And Isabel programme at the start of the year. Eamonn announced back in December that he was joining the network, sealing his exit from This Morning. The veteran broadcaster had hosted the popular ITV show for 15 years alongside wife Ruth Langsford. While she has remained working with ITV on Loose Women, and is set to make a This Morning comeback over the summer, Eamonn hidden his dismay over his former employer.

During a winner’s press conference at the Tric Awards, he said: “I did not resign from ITV, ITV resigned from me. I never received a single explanation once of why they wanted rid of me, no matter what you have been told.” Meanwhile, during his winner’s speech at the annual ceremony in front of many of his former ITV costars including This Morning duo Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, the 62-year-old was heard to say: “Good Morning Britain we’re coming for you.” Later, when he was asked whether he thought GB News had a chance of overtaking the ITV show, especially without Piers Morgan, he said: “Oh God yes. No (I don’t think their standards are slipping), I just think our standards are amazing. We are the people’s channel.” He added that he predicts GB News will overtake the ITV morning breakfast show “hopefully next year”

An RHS spokesman said of the incident: “We take Health and Safety very seriously.Throughout the remainder of the show we made the decision to close off the garden to visitors.” After his sister was rushed to hospital, Ainsley took to Twitter to reassure his fans that she was doing “fine” after the incident. He wrote on May 23: “Just a big thank you to everyone who helped my sister when she had a fall at the Chelsea Flower Show this morning. “She’s doing fine and all is well xx.”

TV chef threatens legal action TV chef Ainsley Harriott revealed he is considering taking legal action after his sister nearly drowned at the Chelsea Flower Show. Harriott, 65, took his sister, Jacqueline, with him to the VIP launch of Chelsea Flower Show in May. However, a family day out soon took a turn for the worse as Ainsley was left trying to save his sister after she fell into a water feature. In a recent interview, Ainsley has admitted he would consider legal action over the incident, as the area “should have been roped off”. The retired teacher fell into a water feature at the Chelsea Flower Show and she was rushed to hospital after she “coughed up a lot of water”. The incident happened at the Our Green Planet and RHS Bee Garden exhibit, with Jacqueline falling into the garden pond feature. Ainsley has since spoken about what happened and what he thinks should have been done to prevent accidents.

Ouigo launches high-speed Spanish fighter plane Valencia-Madrid rail link intercepts C after false A high-speed, low-cost train line operating in Spain has put tickets on sale for the MadridValencia route for just €9 each way. Ouigo, owned by French national rail board SNCF, became the first-ever train company to operate in Spain other than RENFE, launching south of the Pyrénées last year. Its first route was the popular commuter trek, between Madrid and Barcelona, starting on May 10, 2021. RENFE, the Spanish State rail board, had held a monopoly since its creation, but 2021 saw train travel in the country open up to private competition for the first time. Now, the second Ouigo connection is set to go live, with three trains in either direction per day. Latest-generation dual-width Alstom Euroduplex trains, each of which have space for 509 passengers, will link up Madrid’s Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station with Spain’s thirdlargest city on the east coast. It will make use of the new tunnel joining Chamartín with Puerta de Atocha and Torrejón de Velasco which opened on Friday. With the three-times-daily trains in both directions, Ouigo will be able to transport up to

a total of 21,378 passengers between the two cities – a figure it describes as the equivalent of 213 airline flights or 10,689 car journeys, based upon two people per vehicle. Tickets at €9 for a single trip between Madrid and Valencia, or Valencia and Madrid, include one piece of hand luggage and one checked-in suitcase, plus a buffet carriage. For an additional €9, travellers can get a ‘OuigoPlus’ ticket,

allowing them a choice of extra-large seats, two suitcases rather than one, and unlimited connection to the OuiFun entertainment platform with films, series, podcasts, games and online magazines at the touch of a button. Passengers who buy the standard €9 ticket can opt to increase this by €3 to get on-board WiFi throughout the journey. Ouigo tickets work on a ‘menu’ basis, meaning those on the basic €9 fee can add an extra €5

for a second suitcase, or just one but an extra-large version. Other options include flexible tickets, with free, unlimited changes up to 30 minutes before departure. Children aged three and under go free of charge, and those aged between four and 13 inclusive travel at the lower price of €5 one-way.

October to December The €9 offer is for travel starting from Ouigo’s first day operating between Madrid and Valencia, 7th October this year, for journeys up to and including 10th December. Ouigo’s next project is to start running routes to Alicante and Albacete, sometime in 2023, with two trains a day to Madrid serving both these eastern cities, and two in return. Once the Alicante-Madrid line, calling at Albacete, is fully established, Ouigo will turn its attention to southern Spain. This could take longer, since the region of Andalucía uses much older track infrastructure, whilst Ouigo uses recent technology – the ERTMS2 automatic braking system built into the rails. But Ouigo is willing to make the necessary investment to upgrade the tracks, enabling it to operate in Andalucía.

bomb threat An easyJet flight was intercepted by a Spanish fighter plane after a bomb threat was allegedly made by a British teenager onboard. Video footage taken by a passenger on the commercial flight shows an F18 fighter warplane flying closely beside the easyJet flight from London Gatwick to Menorca. The Civil Guard confirmed that Menorca airport’s control tower was alerted to a bomb threat made on social media by an 18-year-old British man, prompting a special operation to be organised. Once the plane landed in Mahon, the island’s capital, the flight was taken to a separate area from the main terminal and was subject to bomb disposal experts and sniffer dogs. The Civil Guard have since concluded that the bomb threat was false. The 18-year-old has since been arrested, and is expected to face a bill which would cover the costs of the police operation. A spokesperson for the Civil Guard said: “The Civil Guard has arrested an 18-year-old British national as the alleged author of a crime of public disorder in

Mahon in Menorca. “Yesterday the control tower at Menorca airport was alerted to a bomb threat on a plane heading from London to the island’s capital, Mahon, which was still in the air and nearing the airport. The threat was said to have been sent on a social media platform. “Once the plane landed it was taken to an area away from the main terminal and other aircraft. The Civil Guard organised a special operation which consisted of mobilising bomb disposal experts as well as sniffer dogs and other officers who created a safe perimeter around the plane. “The passengers were disembarked and established

protocol followed until police were able to confirm it was a false bomb threat, and the person responsible was identified on social media along with five other companions as witnesses. They were taken to a police station so officers could clarify the situation.” An easyJet spokesperson said: “EasyJet can confirm flight EZY8303 from London Gatwick to Menorca was escorted by military aircraft while landing in Menorca and delayed disembarking due to precautionary security checks. “The safety and security of its passengers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority, and we would like to thank passengers for their understanding.”

Abstain from alcohol at least three days in a row every week

Hepatologists (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas specialists) say the healthiest amount of alcohol to consume is none at all, but acknowledge that this is unrealistic for most people. Instead, the world’s leading experts at the 2022 International Liver Congress in London have some advice for those who are unwilling to give up drinking altogether: be kind to your liver and abstain from alcohol at least three days in a row every week. And don’t go on a binge the rest of the week – always practice moderation and good nutrition. The warning was prompted by some concerning epidemiological evidence. Europe has the world’s highest rate of alcohol consumption, and more than half of all end-stage liver diseases are related to drinking, according to a joint report by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and The Lancet medical journal. Every year 287,000 Europeans die from mostly preventable liver disease, a 25 percent increase over the number of deaths in 1990. Liver disease differs from other conditions in that it has a substantial impact on young and middle-aged individuals, especially the most socially vulnerable population. This contrasts with mortality from smoking-related and other obesity-related illnesses, such as lung cancer or type 2 diabetes,

for which deaths typically occur in the 60s and 70s. Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that liver disease is now second only to coronary heart disease as the leading cause of years of working life lost in Europe. This reality led Aleksander Krag, EASL’s vice-secretary, to call for a significant reduction in consumption, advertising restrictions, and higher prices for alcoholic beverages. “We’re not telling people to stop drinking altogether,” said Krag. “Just follow a few sensible rules: go three days in a row every week with no alcohol, never consume more than five units of alcohol in one sitting, and no more than 10 a week.” One unit is not equal to one drink: a full glass of wine equals three units; a 12-ounce can of beer equals 1.5 units; and a shot of hard liquor equals one unit. Addiction Any amount of alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk for certain cancers. Alcohol is toxic, as well as addictive. This is why many medical professionals are adamantly opposed to recommending anything other than – try to drink as little as possible. And if you don’t drink at all, so much the better. A daily beer or glass of wine won’t damage your liver, but there are other risks. Alcohol is addictive and gives you a feeling of wellbeing. As soon as you

Queen Letizia tests positive for Covid

drink a little, you tend to want a little more. It’s also habit-forming because you need more and more to achieve the same feeling. This is why, with alcohol, experts all agree the best amount is none at all. Although there are differences of opinion as to how encourage less alcohol consumption, experts unanimously agree that it needs to happen. There are two very effective tools for reducing consumption: raising prices and restricting advertising. It’s well documented that the price of alcohol matters. When they established

minimum prices for alcohol in Wales and Scotland, consumption dropped overnight. Another way to modify behaviour is regulating the advertising of alcohol and unhealthy foods. “Why is it legal to advertise alcohol?” asks Krag. He compares it to tobacco advertising which has been banned in almost all every Western country for years. Tobacco packaging also carries mandatory warnings about the health hazards of smoking. “Why not implement these simple measures?” said Krag.

Gin prices set to rise

Hold on to your hats, gin prices are set to rise. Amid everything else increasing in price, it’s no surprise that the cost of a GnT is set to skyrocket. Drinks manufacturers say that as a result of the war in Ukraine and the inflation crisis, they have been hit by a whole host of cost increases, from the price of wheat – which is used to make many types of gin – to glass bottles, energy, transportation and wages. Distillers have claimed that several popular brands are likely to introduce increases of several euro per bottle in the near future. Wheat and other cereal prices, which were already rising prior to Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine have soared since the outbreak of the conflict. The grain is an essential component of many types of gin, which is made by infusing a base grain with juniper berries and other botanicals. Other price increases in the cost of raw materials, energy, transportation, glass, storage and wages are set to drive the price of gin up. Ian McCulloch, managing director at Surrey-based brand Silent Pool Gin, described the situation as “horrific”. He said: “It’s everything – the cost of glass, [bottle] stoppers, anti-tamper capsules.”

Ukraine is sometimes called “the breadbasket of the world” thanks to the huge amount of grain it exports, but because of the war it is not clear if it will be able to harvest the commodity, or get it out of the country, this year. This uncertainty has caused volatility in the market as suppliers reliant on wheat for everything from bread to animal feed to spirits have had to compete to obtain it elsewhere. International wheat prices were up more than 52 per cent in May compared to the previous year, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation. Mr McCulloch said that like many drinks manufacturers, his firm worked off fixed-price deals with suppliers agreed a year in advance. When these deals have to be renewed, the price of wheat – and of gin on the shelves – will “go flying up”, he predicted. “It will be a snap change… [The price increases] won’t be small,” he added. While small-volume, highmargin businesses like his might be able to absorb some of these cost increases, larger brands such as Gordon’s, Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire, which have lower margins, will struggle to

do the same Mr McCulloch said. While it is retailers, not manufacturers, that set shelf prices, manufacturers’ costs influence how much their products ultimately sell for. Asked how much customers might see prices rise by, Mr McCulloch predicted the figure would be in “pounds [not pence]”. Russell Evans, founder of Bullards gin, agreed, saying it is “highly likely” that gin prices will rise. “Manufacturers will be putting their prices up,” he said. Mr Evans added that the cost, and availability of glass bottles was causing drinks makers significant problems and would be a major contributing factor to shelf-price increases. “We were very lucky that we ordered vast quantity of bottles just before the pandemic. We’ve got a massive stock but we do need to buy some more later this year,” he added. Even the largest manufacturers are not safe from the cost of living crisis. Piers Baker, who runs three pubs in Essex, said he had been informed by Coca-Cola that the company would not be able to provide him with 330ml bottles of its drinks until September because of supply chain issues.

It’s a Myrkl! Hangover pills now available in the UK The world’s first hangover cure pill has gone on sale in the UK. Swedish brand Myrkl claims the pills break down alcohol in the body, with up to 70 per cent of alcohol broken down after just 60 minutes. Myrkl says that the anti hangover pill is the first product in history to break down alcohol effectively. The supplement is currently only available to buy online, at £30 for 30 pills, and consists of two pills per dose. According to Myrkl, the first tablet is designed to be taken 12 hours before drinking, while the second should be taken an hour before a night of drinking

begins. Researchers from manufacturer, pharmaceutical firm De Faire Medical alongside the Pfützner Science and Health Institute in Mainz, published a paper demonstrating that taking the tablets before drinking reduced alcohol concentration in the body by half within 30 minutes of having a drink. The Myrkl hangover pill contains bacteria, L-Cysteine, and B12 which are activated in the gut before the alcohol reaches the liver. The alcohol is then broken down into water and carbon dioxide, and no-to-low

Acetaldehyde & Acetic acid is produced by the liver. Myrkl says:“Food supplements are intended to supplement the diet and should not replace a varied diet or healthy lifestyle. “This product is intended to be used as part of a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and limited alcohol consumption within government guidelines.” Myrkl also warns people against using the pill before binge-drinking, saying: “Myrkl must never be an excuse to drink more alcohol and you should always limit your alcohol consumption within the government guidelines.”

Cognitive nutrition Becoming increasingly popular, cognition nutrition is touted by dieticians as a food trend set to dominate the next decade. As we are living longer, protecting the brain is becoming just as important as finessing the body, and what we eat matters. The diet, loosely based on a low carbohydrate version of the Mediterranean plate, introduces particular foods and ingredients to boost mental function and alertness. Some nutritionists it could even help prevent neurodegenerative illnesses such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Followers eat six small meals a day based on proteins high in amino acids, such as chicken or fish, to reduce fatigue. They load up on green vegetables which have a positive effect on cognitive function and also prevent muscle tears. Also included are walnuts, salmon and sardines – all of which contain brain-boosting nutrients. In a report on future diet trends, meal-kit company Green Chef identified cognition nutrition as one of the five methods of eating it expects to become most popular in the next decade. The

study highlights research showing that 37 per cent of consumers now consider food not just an energy source but a “functional tool” to reach their mental goals. According to nutritionists the starting point for increasing your brain power through diet is limiting foods that spike insulin levels, which can cause inflammation throughout the body including in the brain. Many studies have shown that a poor diet, including those high in sugar, can lead to poor mental health. The food you eat can affect your mood, memory and behaviour. It can make us feel wired, irritable and tired. Ready meals and processed foods, such as baked beans, sauces and pizzas, are all high in sugar and salt and can have a negative effect on the brain, as can fizzy drinks and alcohol. So what should we be including? Several foods are believed to be specifically beneficial to cognitive functioning: blueberries, broccoli, kale, spinach and rocket all improve brain health, improve memory and focus, while fatty fish provides omega-3 fatty acids which the brain uses to build nerve cells.

Covid on the rise again

Doctors are calling it the ‘silent wave’; there are fewer outbreaks than before, and fewer serious cases than in the days before vaccines were available. But the number of mild cases continues to grow due to two omicron subvariants (BA.4 and BA.5) that can infect people who recently had the disease, and are producing a notable increase in hospitalisations. This is what doctors are seeing in their patients, and what the pandemic statistics are currently reporting. For the 14-day period ending 28th June, there were 841 cases per 100,000 people (over 60) in Spain, which has risen steadily since the beginning of the month. We are roughly at May levels, where we remained at more than 800 cases per 100,000 people for most of the month. The difference is that those numbers remained steady throughout the month of May, whereas now there is a clear and rapid upward trend. This is similar to the highs reported in the preomicron waves. Madrid has the highest cumulative incidence among the over-60 population: 1,450 cases per 100,000. Six other regions are above 1,000 cases per 100,000: the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, and La Rioja. Andalusia has the fewest cases by far–271. All the other regions are above 500. The original omicron variant, which arrived in Spain at the end of 2021, is

no longer spreading. It has evolved into the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, which are now making the rounds. These appear to be even more contagious than the original omicron variant, itself much more transmissible than the delta variant, which was more contagious than the preceding variants. The coronavirus is able to mutate into variants that can evade antibodies from vaccines and those the body produces naturally, which is why people can be reinfected. Luckily, these subvariants do not seem to be causing more serious illness than the previous ones. Although more precise research is needed, the vaccine continues to exhibit a high level of protection against serious illness and death. However, the number of hospitalisations is increasing, along with the overall number of infections. As of 28th June, 9,500 people remain hospitalised with Covid in Spain (almost 1,200 more than four days prior), occupying 7.8 percent of the hospital bed capacity. There were 433 Covid patients in intensive care units (a 4.9 percent occupancy rate), 73 more than more than four days prior. This is the first time since Easter that the number of Covid patients in intensive care has risen above 400. Although the case load is still manageable, if the current upward trend continues, healthcare worker illness and partial hospital closures due to summer vacations could pose problems for hospitals over

the next few months. Symptoms More studies are needed for a detailed identification of all the symptoms of these subvariants. Doctors are reporting that a large majority of people have mild symptoms typical of Covid: headache, sore throat, fatigue, fever, runny nose, cough, etc. It is very difficult to predict how Covid waves will behave. Spain’s neighbour provides the closest point of comparison. Portugal has a high vaccination rate, and the current subvariant wave has already in decline for more than a week. The wave

peaked in Portugal at 3,600 positive diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest ever recorded in the country. However, previous waves placed much more pressure on hospitals than the current one. The latest data indicate a downward trend: there are 1,743 hospitalized Covid patients, of which 85 are in the ICU. This is well below the number experienced during the first great wave in Portugal, when hospitalizations exceeded 3,000 patients, 500 of which were in intensive care. Portugal’s experience is merely a point of reference and does not portend a similar experience in Spain. Many are speculating that the

increase follows hot on the heels of the removal of mandatory mask wearing. However, no direct relationship has been established between the end of the mandatory use of masks and the increase in cases. Transmission has been at very high levels since before the indoor mask requirement was dropped, and has not fallen below 400 cases per 100,000 people since last autumn. The mask requirement isn’t the only restriction that has been lifted–hardly any restrictions remain in place, not even mandatory isolation for Covid-infected patients. However, masks have proven effective in reducing the likelihood of infection, and some places like Catalonia have asked the elderly to voluntarily wear masks indoors. The Ministry of Health does not plan to give another vaccine dose to people who already received a booster (53.5 percent of the population) until after the end of the summer, although it encourages adults over 18 to get a booster if they haven’t already done so. It is very likely that more effective vaccines targeting the new variants will be approved by autumn, and that people over 80 and those living in nursing homes will begin to receive them (what would be a fourth dose). Spain’s Public Health Commission, the government agency responsible for vaccine administration, has not made any statements about the rest of the population yet.

I recently read an article on being happy in a well-known psychology periodical. I took the test, and apparently; I am a happy person (and so too is my husband). This is not something that came as a surprise, as we are pretty well, upbeat and positive people. However, there are it seems a few habits and traits of the unhappy, which I will list here, and also characteristics of happy people. Something for us all to ponder on. Unhappy Traits · Being judgmental and jealous of others · Having an inability to accept their life as it is, not wanting to change and always blaming

Do you apply sunscreen often enough? Although most of us know just how important SPF is for preventing skin damage and, more importantly, skin cancer, it can be easy to forget another important detail about wearing SPF: Reapplication. Applying and reapplying sunscreen throughout the day is key to getting the most protection possible, especially

if you live or holiday on the Costa Blanca where there’s a lot of sun. Dermatolgist say, we should be applying sunscreen to the face and body 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, allowing it to absorb into the skin. Generally, the rule is to apply sunscreen every two hours if we’re going to be in the sun.

Getting Stopped by the Guardia Civil It is not uncommon to be stopped by the Guardia Civil, or the police for that matter, whether for a routine checkpoint, or for an infraction, but in summer there is often an increase in checks, so the chance of getting stopped is greater. It is not necessarily anything to worry about, but it is useful if we know how to act. Never stop abruptly If when you are driving your vehicle on the road, if you notice that a Guardia Civil vehicle is ahead of you and turns on a red light together with the priority blue lights, you must stop the car. Don’t do it instantly and abruptly. Instead, do it in a relaxed way, reducing the speed at which you are driving and stopping the vehicle in a safe, convenient and legal place on the road. You should always stop your vehicle on the right side of the road. Do not get out of the car Once your vehicle is stopped safely, do not get out, unless the officer asks you to. By stopping on the road, you expose yourself to invading a traffic lane if you leave the vehicle. Other vehicles can circulate in that lane, which are forced to dodge and you expose yourself to an accident. The officer will approach your

vehicle The officer will approach your vehicle, normally on the right-hand side, away from traffic, and will tell you the reason you have been stopped. Be careful resuming your journey Once the stop has been concluded, after you have been dealt with, do not hurry away. The officer will advise you when to continue and will assist you in joining the flow of traffic. Why you might be stopped The Guardia Civil, and the police, can stop you for various reasons. Among them to notify you of having committed an infraction, or to carry out a preventive control such as at a checkpoint. You must always comply with the orders that the agent may give you. If it is a checkpoint, they may have a sign to assist them, a red circle with a horizontal black line, sometimes containing text. If you see this sign, you must not pass it without stopping. The documents you may have to present You as an individual must carry your personal identity document, as will as your driving licence. If you are not carrying your licence, you may find yourself arrested, as driving without a licence is a criminal offence, and the onus is on you to prove you have a

Indicators! Having constantly tried various means such as education and enforcement to get the message across, both the DGT and the Guardia Civil are trying a different approach, humour, to try to get drivers to use one of the most important safety features of our vehicles, the indicators. It can be said louder but not clearer: you have to use the indicators to signal any manoeuvre that implies a lateral movement, such as making a turn, a change of direction, overtaking, parking, joining, taking an exit... These orange flashing lights, mandatory on all motor vehicles, are the only means that a driver has to indicate intention to other road users. Its operation, which only requires raising or lowering the corresponding lever located behind the steering wheel with one finger, is

important to avoid a traffic incident or collision. Despite being a key element in terms of safety, there are still drivers who choose not to use them, which increases the risk to road users. While the DGT recalls that “they are easy to use and do not wear out with use”, the Guardia Civil goes further and, humorously, says “More than 32 million vehicles circulate in Spain, and all of them left the factory with indicators. Don’t tell us yours didn’t! If so, auction it off, you’re going to make a fortune because it’s a unique and unknown jewel. Instead, now we need to use it (the tick-tock is cool)”. In fact, the “tick-tock” to which the message refers is the one that irritated the Spanish TV presenter Cristina Pedroche so much, who in controversial

right to drive. In addition, in your vehicle, you must also carry the up-to-date Vehicle Technical Inspection, la tarjeta de la Inspección Técnica del Vehículo (ITV) card, the most recent ITV report, and you must display the ITV sticker on the upper right-hand corner of your windscreen. If you drive with an expired ITV, the fine is 200 euro. If you have a “Desfavorable” ITV report, you have a period of two months to repair defects and return to the ITV inspection, or the penalty is 200 euro. If your test report is “Negativa”, your failure was so serious that you expose yourself to a fine of 500 euro. You must also carry your vehicle´s logbook, the permiso de circulación. Driving without carrying your driver’s license is considered a minor infraction, whose penalty can reach 100 euro. In the same way, it can be punishable, as a minor infraction and with a fine of up to 100 euro if you do not have the vehicle’s documents. And it never hurts to remember that we must always carry the reflective vest in our vehicle, which we must always wear in case of abandoning the vehicle due to a breakdown or if the Guardia Civil agent tells us that we must leave the vehicle at the roadside.

statements made in 2016 said that “I never turn on the indicator when I drive because that little sound makes me angry, ‘tic, tac, tic, tac’, that they do when they are connected”. As annoying as it is, as established by the General Traffic Regulations, they are mandatory to inform other road users about the manoeuvre that is going to be carried out. In any case, activating them does not give full priority or right of way to carry it out. First you have to make sure that it can be done without hindering the progress of other motorists or compromising road safety. To do this, it is necessary to observe the traffic well through the mirrors and looking around. After making sure that we can complete the move without incident, we proceed to signal the action: we raise the lever if we go to the right or lower it if we do it to the left. There are multiple traffic situations in which it is necessary to use them to indicate what action we are going to carry out with our vehicle. Such is the case of the incorporations in a road, either from stopped or in movement when we access a motorway; changes of direction, in which vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must also be watched; parking or stopping; overtaking and lane changes; as well as the exits of a roundabout, for example. In the extraordinary event that they do not work, the indication of the change of direction must be indicated with the arm: in a horizontal position with the palm of the hand extended downwards, if the movement is going to be towards the side indicated by the hand, left; or bent upwards, also with the palm of the hand extended, if it is going to be the other way, right. The General Circulation Regulation establishes that a turning, change of direction or overtaking manoeuvre carried out “without warning the rest of the users with the mandatory signals, without sufficient notice” is considered a serious infraction sanctioned with a fine of 200 euro. Likewise, any failure of the indicators will result in a failure at the ITV inspection.

This was our highest turn out since the society started in 2013 with 33 players. Whilst a bit belated we played for the St Patricks Shield which is now in its seventh year and we thank “Sir” Ronnie King for continuing his sponsorship on behalf of the Irish. Theformat was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner, there was also the quarter final of the singles match play between Steve Ayre and Gary Smith, Steve won 3 & 2 and a firstround singles match play between Alan Ralph and Terry Burton which ended all square so replay needed. The destination to play was El Plantio where we were greeted by Daniel and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in excellent condition and the weather was a hot andsunny35 degrees, perfect for golf. Winner of the “St Patrick’s Shield” came from group B and after a two way count back with Andy Neilit went to “The Talker” Steve Mathers with a handicap cutting 41points, runner up of group B was Andy Neil also with 41 points, third place went to “Ave A Go Golfer” Steve Day with 39 points and fourth place Alex Porteous with 37 points.

Group A winner was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 38 points, runner up was Ian Bell with 36 points, third place was Ray Hamilton with 35 points and fourth place was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 2 Ray Hamilton, hole 7 (phew nearly a hole on one) “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 10 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B hole 6 “Lord” Alan Freelove, hole 9 Kenny Dow, hole 15 “The Talker” Steve Mathers, best front 9 went to Andy Neil with 22 points and beast back 9 went to Alex Porteous with 23 points, the 2’s pot was shared three ways each winning €10, Alex Porteous, Ray Hamilton and “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly. The football card was won by “Mrs Three Clubs” Claire McGuinness with Southampton winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities for 2022. Thank you to Antonio and staff at Imanyo’s for the good food and hospitality. Picture shows Ronnie King presenting the shield toSteve Mathers. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

TALES fROM THE TOP fLIGHT pursuit of being the best team in their city to join Southampton for £6m. As for Sunday, welcome back to Forest who had taken a few days rest - Omar Richards, a surprising signing by Bayern from Reading a year ago returns to the Premier League for just under £10m. He could well be the signing of the summer, and not just for Steve Cooper. So that is all the fact - what about the fiction? Raheem Sterling is closer than ever when it comes to returning to London - he will be a Chelsea player early next week. Take note United, this is what signing your top target quickly looks like.

n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Welcome to yet another seven days of football transfer rumour in the Premier League. Has much moved forwards? It doesn’t feel like it with so many of the same players being linked to the same clubs but actually (dramatic pause), there’s been some pretty interesting transfer action. We go back to the start of the week where Nottingham Forest continue to business that can be filed under “OK, that feels intelligent”. Giulian Biancone of Troyes is a right-back who can play centre-back as well and comes to the City Ground for £5m. Monday saw some big cash splashed as Kalvin Phillips donned a City shirt for his big unveiling his £42m signing being covered by Gabby Jesus heading down the motorway to the Emirates for £42m. Fulham finally got out of the headlock they were put in by Joao Palhinha’s agent and signed the Portuguese holding midfielder for a cool £17m. Apparently, he’s quite good. Down the road, Chelsea waved goodbye to Andreas Christensen who moved to Barcelona - not pulling out of the deal late in the morning and disrupting Tommy T’s plans. Tuesday was the day a cult hero officially left the building - Divock

Origi leaving Liverpool for AC Milan means that Everton fans are hoping they might sneak a draw in the next derby. Last week, we called out Manchester United for not getting anything done despite having their new coach in place before last season even ended. Obviously, by the time you actually got to read the column their social media team had done something witty and creative announcing the arrival of left-back Tyrell Malacia. Brice Samba, pivotal in Forest becoming a Premier League side again, has quit whilst he was ahead and signed for Lens in France. Forest were in action again on Wednesday, picking up some value

in central defender Moussa Niakhate who joined from Mainz. He’s possibly another Bulibargain for the Tricky Trees. Leeds didn’t grieve for Phillips for too long - they announced the signing of Jesse Marsch alumni Tyler Adams for £20m. Unheard of defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia moved to Southampton from Man City’s academy for £17m too. This time last season Flynn Downes was being eyed up by lower-level Championship clubs before arriving at Swansea City. Next season, he’ll be wearing the claret and blue of West Ham after the Moysiah felt £12m was a fair price. That’s not a bad Thursday if your name is Flynn Downes. Leeds spent the rest of the Phillips money on Colombian winger Luis Sinissterra who is either Raphina’s replacement or a very good ally for the Brazilian on the other wing. It was “one in one out” for Spurs on Friday. They finally got shot of Steven Bergwijn to Ajax before bringing in Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona - yes, that is a very Antonio Conte move. Saturday was Brentford’s day pipping the Arsenal to young Scottish right-back Aaron Hickey who has been playing in Serie A for Bologna. Joe Aribo came back south of the border, leaving Rangers and their

Speaking of United, they are sure they’ve convinced Christian Eriksen to join them but Brentford aren’t convinced. Ten Hag has also told the board that if Ajax want more money for Lisandro Martinez and Antony, then he’d like that to happen, please. And the same with Frenkie de Jong. United’s sponsors would like them to keep hold of Ronaldo, apparently - and United being United, well you know what that means. Another season of mediocre performance as this old bloke convinces the world that scoring lots of goals helps a football team be good. Sorry, sorry - JUST scoring lots of goals helps a football team be good.
