Campaign to save Doña Sinforosa Park More than 1,700 signatures have been gathered so far in an effort to save doña Sinforosa park in advance of a protest planned for July 31st. PSoe, los Verdes and Sueña torrevieja are planning a public rally at the end of July to demand that the planned development of two skyscrapers next to the bay in torrevieja does not convert the emblematic green area, with hundred year old trees, into a paved walkway.
Campaigners have already collected more than 1,700 signatures in favour of the conservation of the conservation in torrevieja. Residents and political parties are organising a public protest to demand that the local administration be sensitive when it comes to preserving this unique space next to the beach in torrevieja. the campaign in defence of the park was announced at a joint public appearance by three local political
parties - the PSoe, los Verdes and Sueña torrevieja - together with independent councillors Rodolfo Carmona and nacho torre-Marín, which took place at the park itself. the opposition parties claim that the town hall “intends to authorize” for the benefit of a developer the replacement of the much loved garden next to the Acequión beach for a paved esplanade. the park is a unique green area right next to the beach and is one of the few public spaces in the town that has maintained the same character for almost a century, with some large specimens of eucalyptus and pine trees. the campaign has been gathering momentum in recent months, since a detailed study of the two 27-storey towers was revealed in december. Part of the plan to build the two skyscrapers is to convert the park into a paved communal area. the parties behind the ‘save the park’ campaign have said that they have sensed great interest and
concern among residents, who themselves are continuing to request more signature sheets for the petition so that more people can join the movement to preserve the park. Andrés navarro, spokesperson for the PSoe told the press at the meeting, “this park is one of the few ‘green lungs’ that we have in the centre of torrevieja. in cities, it is essential to identify and value what is most important in their culture, their history, as well as their spatial
form and the relationship of the inhabitants with the places.” navarro believes that “the destruction of doña Sinforosa and the construction Continued on page 3

of two 27-storey towers will be the beginning of the end of the image of our town. that is why we are going to convene a gathering in defence of this emblematic green space that will take place next Sunday, July 31 at 7:00 p.m. on Calle doña Sinforosa, next to the park itself.” israel Muñoz, spokesperson for the
green party, los Verdes, has warned about the environmental damage involved in eliminating the doña Sinforosa park. Pablo Samper, spokesperson for Sueña torrevieja said, “it is time to give back to the citizens the voice and the strength so that they legitimately express their defence of
doña Sinforosa Park as we know it, as a historical, cultural and natural emblem of torrevieja.” Although it is no longer a matter of opinion because the town hall has already sanctioned the project, campaigners hope that they can at least negotiate that the park can be maintained in its current condition.

Orihuela beach closures
last Wednesday saw the department for Beaches at orihuela town hall close three on its most popular Blue Flag Beaches. Cala Mosca, Cala Cerrada and Cala Bosque were closed as a precautionary measure after routine water analysis - carried out by the General directorate of Water on the quality of bathing water on the beaches of the Valencian Community – detected a high level of contamination of residual origin in the bathing water. Following the indications that the bathing on these beaches could be affected the beaches were closed and the necessary work was carried out to solve the situation. tannoy announcements were made, barriers installed to block entrances and police patrolled the areas to make sure there were no bathers. Samples were taken every three hours and the beaches were re opened less than 24-hours later when samples showed values had returned
to acceptable levels. on reopening, a report from hidraqua blamed a ‘specific source of contamination’ and said ‘there was no risk whatsoever’. the water management company explained ‘there is no localised discharge’ and that ‘the treatment plant in the area has not detected any discharge either. Follow up analysis shows the water suitable for bathing’. however, timing couldn’t have been worse with beaches full of summer tourists and soaring temperatures driving locals to the beach for a much-needed dip – the closures caused consternation across the local community. And to add insult to injury, despite being short lived and the right thing to do to protect the public, the closure was ‘sensationalised’ in the British Press damaging the areas reputation with holidaymakers. the Sun reported the closure under the headline ‘Wish poo were here’ with the majority of the uK press picking up and reporting on the story.

Orihuela extends opening hours
Jose Aix makes announcement
deputy Mayor and Councillor for urban Planning, José Aix, has announced that opening hours for certain establishments are to be extended across the summer. until 30th September, the closing time has been extended by one hour, on thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, in public establishments in the municipality of orihuela that have the mandatory municipal license. this is applies to certain types of cafes, coffee shops, bars, lounges and restaurants. Business owners are being told to check their status with their legal advisers. “this measure energises the local commercial sector and once again shows support from this government for the hotel industry as a strategic sector, at a time of great influx of visitors to our coasts, festivals in our districts, neighbourhoods and the city,” explained the Councillor.
‘Centaurus’ Blood group O less likely to symptoms need intensive care for covid
Caught in the act: Drunk, naked driver
A drunk, naked driver who is reported to have been receiving fellatio while driving was arrested in Crevillente this week. local Police stopped the vehicle as it lurched past a checkpoint beeping the horn. the couple inside, from elche, were completely naked. officers said that they charged the driver, and the woman in the passenger seat who was said to be performing fellatio on the man while he drove, drunk, through the streets of Crevillente. Crevillente police officers followed the vehicle to stop it after it passed in front of a checkpoint, on the Paseo de la estación, lurching and honking the horn. the officers, who at that moment were leaving the police station to get their patrol car, caught up with the vehicle and, at first, thought that only the driver was inside, since they only saw his silhouette. When the vehicle
stopped, they verified that there were two people inside the vehicle – they hadn’t seen the woman who had been crouching over towards the driver’s side. officers verified that the driver presented obvious symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol, for which they carried out a breathalyzer test. the driver gave a positive result of 0.75 mg/litre, far exceeding the permitted levels of alcohol in the blood. the event occurred on Sunday night - the couple explained that they had just spent a night out and a concert. the vehicle was impounded. the occupants could not give a reason as to why they were honking the horn. the driver was charged with the crimes of reckless driving and for being three times over the permitted alcohol limit.
Researchers have found a new CoVid-19 variant called ‘Centaurus’. the new strain is another omicron subvariant originating from india. While studies on Centaurus are in their early stages, so far, scientists say there is no evidence to suggest that contracting the new subvariant causes serious symptoms or risk of severe infection. What scientists are saying is that it can spread to people who have already had the virus. this new subvariant was first detected in india in early June, but it was only on June 30 that virologist tom Peacock of the department of infectious diseases at imperial College london made it official with the name Centaurus. in addition to this, Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World health organisation (Who) explained: “the mutations of this variant allow access to the healthy cells of the organism, which raises fears that it has a greater capacity for contagion and is able to evade previous immunity more easily”. Centaurus symptoms the full scope of this subvariant is not yet known. in principle, the symptoms would be similar to those of the other omicron variants - fever, fatigue, headache, cough, headache and runny nose. however, new signs such as loss of smell, loss of taste, vomiting and diarrhoea have been detected in the most recent BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants.
Covid-19 patients with blood group 0 have a lower risk of complications and of being admitted to the intensive care (iCu) as a result of the infection, according to a study carried out by the health and Care Research Group of the university of la Rioja (uR) among 1,399 hospitalized patients. the study, carried out in collaboration with the idi-Paz Madrid Research institute at the start of the pandemic, between March 1 and May 31, 2020, demonstrated the relationship between susceptibility to covid-19 infection and the various blood groups. the 1,399 patients, of whom 26.1% were admitted to the iCu, were studied at nine hospitals across Spain during the height of the pandemic. the objective of the study was to find out the susceptibility to severe symptoms and to have to be admitted to iCu due to covid-19 based on blood group (A, B and 0). Researchers found that a significant increase in susceptibility was observed
in patients with blood groups A and B and a reduction in susceptibility in group 0 in terms of patients hospitalized for covid-19. the study also concluded that patients admitted to hospital for covid-19 are more likely to have blood group B and AB than group A compared to the general population with a statistically significantly lower probability of admission for blood group 0 than group A. the authors of the study suggest that there is less susceptibility to SARSCoV-2 infection among blood group 0 patients, both for those admitted to the hospital ward and for those who required subsequent admission to the iCu. this study, published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, was coordinated by the principal investigator of the uR health and Care Group, Raúl Juárez-Vela; together with professors of nursing Regina Ruiz de Viñaspre-hernández and iván Santaolalla-Arnedo.

No more hanging on the telephone Child saved from drowning Spain’s new customer service law will limit the time callers are left ‘on hold’ when contacting companies to just three minutes, and sets a maximum of 15 days for firms to resolve complaints. As already outlined earlier in 2022, the legislation, which is due for the formal rubber-stamping any day now, requires companies to guarantee callers will be able to speak to a human being if they wish, not just an automated machine service. it also obliges all businesses to set specific systems and services for the elderly and for people with disabilities or diversities. Companies which break the new rules can be fined between €150 and €100,000, depending upon the seriousness of the issue and whether it is a repeat offence. Consumer affairs minister Alberto Garzón says the legislation will ‘halt the abuse’ of ‘certain companies’ in their relations with customers and ‘nip in the bud’ the ‘administrative labyrinths’ that ‘create headaches for families in Spain’. “it’s not just the odd few companies which create these, precluding the public from exercising their right to full customer service,” Garzón stated. the three-minute limit for callers being left on hold applies to those contacting a company for ‘general information, complaints, or after-sales service’, and businesses will be required to guarantee, within a year of the new law coming into effect, that 95 percent of calls are answered within the set time frame. At present, Spanish law dictates that complaints or problems are resolved within a maximum of 30 days, but this will now reduce to 15. Where the issue raised relates to supply or connection of ‘basic services’ – electricity, gas,
Callosa municipal pools
water and internet – the providers will be required to explain what has caused the outage and guarantee the situation will be resolved within no more than two hours. if a complaint is in process, the provider will not be permitted to cut off supply until this is resolved. in addition to guaranteeing that any caller will be able to speak to a human, not just an automated message service, companies passing the customer on to the human in question are ‘categorically forbidden’ to transfer them to a line which attracts a cost for the call. Also, customer service departments will no longer be able to take advantage of calls for information requests or complaints to try to sell goods or services. For ‘basic services’ – water, electricity, gas, internet, or transport – agents must be available for customers to speak to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including on all bank holidays. Companies providing other services which are less urgent will be obliged to make operators available to callers throughout the whole of their usual working day – for example, if trading hours are from 9am to 6pm, explains Garzón, they will not be allowed to
restrict call centre opening to 10am to 4pm. Help for the elderly Firms will be forbidden from restricting contact methods where these cause a problem for the elderly, disabled or those with diversities – for example, they cannot stipulate that they only deal with customers by telephone, since a customer who is deaf will not be able to use the service; they must provide instant messaging or video calls with sign-language interpreters; neither can they insist on only dealing with customers via email or instant messaging rather than phone calls, given that elderly clients are less likely to have internet connections, and blind customers cannot read or write emails. At present, the legislation is only binding on companies – public- or private-sector firms – with either a minimum of 250 employees or a turnover of €50 million or more per year. this is not the case with ‘basic service’ providers, however – even the smallest of these is required to adhere to the new law.
Sunday afternoon nearly brought tragedy to Callosa de Segura when a child nearly drowned in the town’s municipal swimming pool. luckily, the child was rescued and revived although he was suffering cardiorespiratory arrest when pulled from the water.

‘Youth gang’ arrested for a string of robberies in Vega Baja
Guardia Civil have arrested a gang of young thieves that they believe are responsible for as many as 60 robberies in homes and businesses across the Vega Baja and in the Cartagena countryside. More than a hundred Guardia Civil officers from various barracks in Alicante and Murcia were mobilized at the end of June to arrest ten Moroccan men between the ages of 18 and 25 and a 19-year-old Spanish girl in the Murcian municipality of torre Pacheco. All of those arrested had criminal records and three were remanded in custody. Guardia Civil confirmed that one of the robberies also involved a firearm, indicating the danger of the gang. At the moment the gang is linked to 54 crimes of robbery with force, three crimes of theft of vehicles (which were then used in later crimes) six crimes of usurpation of marital status, a crime against public health for drug trafficking and a crime of belonging to a criminal group. Guardia Civil are continuing with the investigation, since it is not ruled out that more robberies will be linked to the gang. the investigation was initiated by officers in Pilar de la horadada after an increase in burglaries was detected during March and April. officers were able to verify that
the same gang was operating in the Campo de Cartagena region and the investigations intersected with lines of enquiry opened by the Guardia Civil in torre Pacheco and torrevieja. the various sections joined forces to share information and, little by little, officers were able to identify all the members of the youth gang. All of them lived in the torre Pacheco hamlet of lo Ferro, some with their families but the majority occupying houses illegally, which had generated a large degree of concern among local residents. From there they travelled to rob houses and private businesses across the Vega Baja. Guardia Civil found out that they not only burgled houses, but also stole cars and ransacked industrial buildings, businesses and farms. they also stole diesel and copper during many of the robberies. the gang had a small group of leaders who organized the rest of the gang members in carrying out the robberies. they were also in charge of sorting the ‘loot’ from the robberies and selling it on the black market. once the thieves had been identified and the participation of the gang in more than fifty robberies had been proven, thirteen simultaneous raids were carried out in the early hours of June 29.
Given the magnitude of the operation and the need to carry out the raids simultaneously, the primary investigators were joined by officers from the Citizen Security units (uSeCiC) of the Guardia Civil commands of Murcia and Alicante and several other units. in addition, there were personnel from the Reserve and Security Group (GRS) no. 2 of Seville. in total, more than 100 members of the Guardia Civil participated in the operation. in addition to the raids, the officers arrested the eleven members of the gang and recovered various pieces of jewellery, watches, mobile phones,
which police vehicles in Callosa all carry. however, the equipment was not needed and the boy was resuscitated by the lifeguards. A SAMu ambulance, which was called to the incident, transferred the boy to hospital to receive more precise treatment.
computer equipment and various canisters containing diesel. they also seized 2.5 kilograms of marijuana, a motor vehicle and tools used to carry out the robberies. during the raids, two gang members jumped out the windows of their respective houses to escape Guardia Civil. they hid at a family member’s home in an adjoining building but as officers already had the area surrounded, they were able to search all the buildings within the area and both were found in the bedroom of a neighbouring girl – one in the wardrobe and one in the bed with the girl.
the defendant accessed their bank account and seized more than 62,000 euros, supposedly for the purchase of the property, but no sale was ever carried out. the trial will be held on Friday, 22nd July at 11:30 am in the seventh court of elche.
Massive fire in Pilar de la Horadada
Firefighters, local police and civil protection volunteers battled on Saturday night to contain a massive fire at a plot of land containing garden waste. the spectacular fire could be seen from miles around as it blazed on a plot of private land that was being used to deposit prunings and garden waste in Pilar de la horadada. the plot is surrounded by agricultural land there were concerns it would spread, especially given the current heatwabve. however, the rapid intervention of the local Police, Civil Protection and Firefighters meant it was under control quickly without any serious consequences. According to sources, there are several indications that the fire was started intentionally, especially as the area is enclosed and does not have good access.

Reports of sexual abuse rise 80% in a year Group sex attacks are rising and currently stand at 10.5% of the total number of attacks reported through crisis help lines. the AnAR Foundation has released worrying figures, indicating that an increasing number of sex assaults, gang rapes and grooming are taking place. the foundation, established in the 70s to help children and teens at risk, reported that it has gone from dealing with 717 cases of sexual abuse in 2020 to 1,297 cases in 2021, which represents an increase of 80.9%, with a worrying growth trend in gang rapes in the last decade, already reaching 10 .5% of all sexual assaults and abuses dealt with through the help lines that the AnAR foundation makes available to children and teens, their families and schools. the phenomenon is cause for great concern said AnAR’s director of Programs, Benjamín Ballesteros. he explained that they have gone from having 2.1% of cases of group sexual abuse to 10.5% in the last year. “undoubtedly this is a phenomenon in which we are seeing, with concern, that young people are trivializing this type of behaviour, moving away more and more from
empathy towards the victims.” Among the possible causes pointed out by Ballesteros, is the consumption of pornography from a very early age “without any type of parental control”. this, in his opinion, is among the possible causes that explain the phenomenon. the foundation pointed out that in some of the recently reported cases of gang rape, the victims were contacted and groomed through social networks. in 2021, the organization responded to 502 requests for help for grooming, which involved direct support for 51 victims of this increasingly widespread criminal practice. throughout 2021, the foundation attended to 251,118 requests for help and provided support to 16,442 children and adolescents in Spain, victims of different types of violence, mental health problems such as self-harm, eating disorders or suicide attempts, as well as bullying or sexual abuse. the ‘Annual AnAR telephone/ Chat Report 2021’ - presented
in April - warned that reports of sexual assaults had skyrocketed in the last year. experts also indicated then that there had been a marked increase in cases of teens who had been drugged by their abusers. “A worrying and not isolated phenomenon”, said the AnAR Foundation. the figures that came to light in April showed that the pandemic has taken a huge toll on the mental health of children and teens. the total consultations for suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts and self-harm was 7,770. the help lines (900 20 20 10 and chat.anar.org) are free, confidential, work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are attended by psychologists , lawyers and social workers specialized in child and adolescent care.

Eight arrested for fake Health alert for ‘equatorial nights’ driving license scam in the Vega Baja eight people have been arrested by Guardia Civil for selling false driving licences online for sums between €600 and €19,000. those arrested used up to 15 different websites as well as social networks to sell and distribute the fake documents. they have been charged with crimes of fraud and forgery. operation ‘Golden Card’ was underway for a year and a half with detectives establishing various lines of enquiry to untangle the gang’s sales network. officers found that to take payments, the accused used third party accounts where they diverted the money. through these same web pages created by the gang, they also pretended to be financial institutions, offering online loans. the false lenders included, as an initial condition for the
loan to be approved, that applicants would create the an account and lodge an amount of money that ranged between 500 and 1,000 euros as a security deposit for the loan. the loans were never processed and the money was never returned to victims. it is believed that more than 30 people were defrauded of money in this way with victims in Alicante, Murcia and 14 other provinces across Spain. Many of those who applied for the false licence didn’t even know the document was fake, explaining to Guardia Civil officers that the website they used had led them to believe they were applying for an official Spanish driving licence. in these instances, all of the victims were of foreign nationality. As there are believed to be more victims yet to come forward, the investigation remains open.
the Ministry of health announced a new health alert on Monday due to extremely high temperatures across the Valencian Community. temperatures in the mid to high 30s are expected again this week with night time temperatures in the mid to high 20s.

Pilar De La Horadada health care extended health officials announced this week that they have made significant organisational and staffing changes to reinforce the health offering in Pilar de la horadada during the summer months. officials have set up what they describe as ‘reinforcement modules’ in the centre and auxiliary clinics, based on requests for more resources by the health centre management. A health department spokesperson said, “in this way, primary care in the municipality of Pilar de la horadada is reinforced during the summer months.” the Mil Palmeras Clinic can now guarantee continuity of care by opening from 8.00am to 11.00am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, as it does every year in summer. in addition, during the months of July and August, staffing numbers have been expanded based on the increase in the care load. the peripheral office of torre de la horadada will also have extended
morning hours every day. the nursing station will be open from 10.00am to 3.00pm every day and in addition, an extra doctor will be assigned Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 12.00pm to 3.00pm, and on tuesdays and thursdays from 8.00am to 3.00pm. in the afternoon, Pilar de la horadada health Centre hours are extended. the old health centre, which used to close at 3.00pm now closes at 9.00pm, the afternoon schedule now reinforced with a team of doctors and nurses working until 9.00pm. on weekends and holidays, the Continuous Care Point will have extra staff, so will have two nurse and doctor teams from 9.00am to 9.00pm. the care strategy continues to focus on promoting emergency and out of hours treatment throughout the department with the 24-hour opening of the 6 Continuous Care Points (PACs) which should help alleviate strain on the system this summer when, in many areas, the population triples.

According to weather forecasters, these extremes of hot and cold are becoming more and more frequent due to climate change. not only are episodes of heat more intense, they are more prolonged than usual. Fire risk is also extremely high in several areas.

Electric scooters continue Free rail travel from September to flood Torrevieja despite until the end of the year lack of permission the new trend for rented electric scooters continues in torrevieja, despite prohibition by the town hall. it’s common now to see scooters discarded on pavements and roads of the town and even the municipal tow truck has been busy hauling away dozens of the scooters and fining the companies responsible. the town hall claimed this week in a report in información that it has no plans to authorise this activity yet rental scooters are appearing all over town. torrevieja’s Councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón stressed that all vehicles on public roads that fail to comply with the local traffic and occupation regulations will be removed. he also indicated that aside from municipal regulations, this activity is not specifically accounted for. no company, he said, has expressly requested a license for the use of the public domain to run a scooter rental business. Reports this week indicate that the municipal tow truck has carried out several roundups of these rental scooters, issuing the companies a fine for the removal of the scooters and a fine for subsequent storage at the municipal vehicle
compound. despite the fines, the companies continue to offer the scooters for rent at a rate of around 20c per minute. Councillor Alarcón was quoted in información as saying “We are going to continue carrying out this removal of scooters.” the vehicles are distributed first thing in the morning to areas of high tourist volume, such as promenades and on the sidewalks and corners of the centre of torrevieja. the increase in volume of the activity seems to be fuelled by the intense competition between two companies, a split from one original company. Both have the same corporate colours and a similar logo and name. in torrevieja centre, there is very little provision for bicycles so the scooters must be driven among heavy traffic on conventional roads. users, who rent the scooters straight from their mobile phones using an app on an ad hoc basis, don’t always have the mandatory helmet when they rent a scooter which is a genuine safety concern. Many are also unfamiliar with the rules of the road and do not display an awareness of how to navigate urban roads safely.
A new initiative by the Spanish government to tackle the cost of living crisis will see some rail journeys available completely for free from September to the end of the year. the announcement came last week, when the government revealed that travel across certain parts of the state-owned rail-network, Renfe, would be free from 1 September to the end of the year. the new offer on Renfe routes is in addition to a
the local taxi sector is also beginning to notice a problem. President of the radio taxi association Vicente José García torres said, “Right now the problem is focused on the use they are making of scooters and traffic safety rather than the impact on customers. We find them abandoned on the road, left about in any old way when users are finished.” he also hinted that many users are taking these scooters home from a night out saying, “it must be taken into account that it is not usually controlled under what conditions those who use it drive it, especially in the early hours.”
scheme announced in June in which central government agreed a 30% discount on all public transport, including metros, buses and trams. the 100% rail discounts will apply to multi-trip ticket journeys on cercanías (commuter services) and media distancia, or mediumdistance routes (less than 300km). the measure is mainly aimed at Spanish multi journey pass holders but tourists could take advantage of it if they too bought multi journey tickets for their stay.
“i’d like the people of Spain to know that i’m fully aware of the daily difficulties that most people have,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, “i know salaries cover less and less and that it’s difficult to get to the end of the month. the Ministry of transport said “this measure encourages using public transport to guarantee a safe, reliable, comfortable, economic and sustainable means of doing the daily commute amid the extraordinary increase of energy and fuel prices.”
Callosa harnesses solar power Callosa town hall has installed a series of solar panels on top of two municipal buildings, a move which they estimate is going to save the town hall paying for 50,000 kW per year. 68 solar panels have been installed on the Culture and youth Centre buildings, which will also mean an annual reduction the amount of C02 emissions by the town. the project, subsidized by Alicante Provincial Council had a total budget of 59,000 euros. the mayor of Callosa, Manuel Martínez, revealed that “both in the house of Culture and in the house of youth, a total of 68
panels are being installed, 34 in each building, with a power of 15.3 kilowatts in each building. this means that, per year, we are going to save 50,000 kilowatts of electricity. And another very important piece of information
is that we are going to avoid the emission of 17 tons of Co2 annually” the mayor also announced the placement of an electric charging point for vehicles that will be installed soon.

Alicante-Elche airport served 5.7 million passengers in first half of 2022 Alicante airport’s figures for the first half of 2022 have been released and it appears the popular Costa Blanca airport is on track for recovering its pre pandemic record figures. data shows that in the first six months of this year, the airport served 5.7 million passengers – just 17% below its record breaking 2019 figures. the figures for the first semester of this year far exceed that of 2021 (910,000 passengers) and are 17% below the 6.8 million passengers who moved through the terminal in the same period of 2019, the best year in the history of tourism on the Costa Blanca. the data confirms that the recovery of air travel is beginning to become a reality, but also that there is still a way to go before a full return to total normality, which is not expected until 2024. however forecasts for July and August are excellent with data indicating that for example on Saturday last, there were times when a plane took off every five minutes. the figures indicate that five million passengers passing through Alicante airport were foreign tourists. According to the Secretary of State for tourism Fernando
V a l d é s , reservations made by tourists from the united K i n g d o m , Germany and the nordic countries already exceed figures registered in 2019, before the pandemic broke out. during his speech at the tourism Commission of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Valdés explained that international flight reservations for the summer are currently close to pre-pandemic levels. Specifically, Spain has recovered 9 out of 10 international reservations made in 2019, while domestic flights have grown by 3% compared to 2019. Valdés said “We are on a consolidated path of recovery. the growth in spending per visitor is higher than the increase of the number of visitors. We are committed to the quality of tourism, to a more profitable model that generates employment throughout the territory.” however, despite the positive data from the sector, Valdés has warned that there is still “uncertainty” about the impact that high inflation caused by the Russian invasion
of ukraine may have on tourism figures during the second half of the year. the Alicante-elche Miguel hernández airport registered a total of 1,345,092 passengers during the month of June, which represents a recovery of 87.4% of passenger traffic compared to 2019. the international market accounted for the highest number of passengers with 1,153,063 registered passengers, which represents 83.9% of 2019 figures. Meanwhile the domestic market accounted for 189,576 passengers, a recovery of 83.4%. the countries that registered the most passengers during the month of June were: united Kingdom (497,070), Spain (189,576), holland (88,654), norway (86,414), Belgium (71,926) and Germany (64,370). in terms of the accumulated data, from January to June, the airport registered 5,705,242 passengers, which means it recovered 83.3% of 2019 traffic.

GBP / EUR UPdatE
GBP the ongoing battle to become the next tory party leader and de facto prime minister, after Boris Johnson’s resignation this time last week, had been whittled down to just 5 as of thursday afternoon. leading the pack is ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak, with Penny Mordaunt close enough to make it still too tough a call, to call. this is especially the case given that Ms Mordaunt is the current betting favourite, after a poll of tory MPs placed her in first place in the final run-off. the remaining 5 will now take part in the first of a series of televised live debates today (Friday) and then again on Sunday, before the next round of voting takes place on Monday, when the weakest link will leave the building. there was a surprising pop higher in the latest uK growth figures, when they were released a little earlier in the week. GdP increased by 0.5% (MoM/ May), up from -0.3% previously. A slew of travel bookings appears to be the main culprit, even if everyone is stuck at the airports, for the most part. At the same time, industrial Production increased by 0.9% (MoM/May), and there was also a strong rebound in Manufacturing Production by 1.4% (MoM/May), from -0.6%. if anything, the data puts the Boe in a bit more of a pickle, with a slightly better economic backdrop, it will be tantalising for the Boe to go down the path of most central banks just now, and press the ‘big hike’ button at the next MPC meeting. however, with those muchpublicised increases to the cost-of-living, plus government borrowing costs already ballooning at an alarming rate, the Boe look damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. As for the pound, it really depends on which lens you look at it through. GBP/uSd succumbed to the super-strong greenback, and broke to a new cycle low under 1.1800 for a spell. Against the single currency, it has been a slightly different story, at one point challenging the 1.1900 region, before slipping back 100 pips by yesterday’s close of play. it is a big week for uK data next week, with the latest inflation and labour market reports due. headline inflation is expected to increase from 9.1% to around 9.6%, which will give the Boe even more of a headache if achieved. interestingly enough, with much talk around tax cuts from the prospective new tory leaders, that could further
increase headline inflation down the road. yuck.
EURO Currency markets have dominated the front pages this week, as the pair with the most liquidity and depth, euR/uSd, faced the ‘battle of parity’. the combination of an ever-increasing interest rate differential between the u.S and eZ, and the dollar continually benefitting from regular bouts of market nervousness, leading to broad risk aversion, has seen euR/uSd succumb to selling pressure over the past few weeks, leading us to this key and magical threshold. in the end, the single currency finally gave way on thursday, with the pair properly moving below parity and quickly moving 50pips down to a low some place near 0.9950. As we have said regularly during our daily updates, parity matters not only for the likes of Bloomberg and the financial press, but especially so for markets and option traders. hence when it finally broke, it broke with some momentum and gusto, as a slew of stop-loss sellers were forced out of their positions. it looks a bit like a herd of wildebeest all trying to get out of a small gate at the same time. notwithstanding the fanfare around key levels in currency pairs, key eZ data in the shape of the latest German and Spanish inflation data were released a little earlier in the week. Whilst Spanish inflation remains above 10%, and German inflation remains at 8.2%, there were no material changes, which may give the eCB a small crumb of comfort as we approach the big rate decision meeting next week. Christine lagarde has said on many occasions that the eCB will hike by 25bps in July, which if followed through, will mark the first rate hike from the eCB since 2011. Given that borrowing costs have risen sharply for much the of the region, it really does seem as though the eCB will err on the side of caution and keep with 25bps, despite that surging inflation. this is especially so given the delicate political backdrop in italy just now. indeed, with recession risks mounting in the region, recent market-implied expectations for future rate hikes have also diminished of late. the latest pricing expects around 180bps worth of hikes next year, down from 195bps. next week promises to be fun.

Watermelon thief caught Guardia Civil caught a fruit thief with 350 kilos of watermelons in Cullera this week, with the suspect claiming that the vast amount of stolen fruit in his car was for his own consumption. Watermelon is one of the most popular fruits of the summer season and this year due to its sky high price in supermarkets, growers have had to become much more vigilant to fruit thieves. the situation has become so bad that local Police and the Guardia Civil have had to increase surveillance of watermelon fields in recent weeks, including surveillance by drone, given the increase of cases of theft of watermelons. on tuesday in Cullera, a 70-year-old man, was arrested
with his car overflowing with watermelons that he is accused of having stolen. the arrest occurred thanks to a tip off by a nearby resident who witnessed the robbery at 7 in the morning. When the two squad cars arrived to the rural road where
the alleged theft had taken place, officers said that the man first claimed the 350kg of fruit was for his own consumption. As if that were not enough, the accused also had an expired driver’s license and had parked his car in the middle of the road.

“What is Bluetooth and how do I use it?” Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology standard that is used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using uhF radio waves, not an internet connection. this means that Bluetooth will
work anywhere you have two compatible devices — you don’t need any sort of data plan, or even a cellular connection. Compatible hardware: Personal computers; Smartphones; Gaming consoles; tV’s; Car Radio; Smart Watches and Audio devices Physical range: typically less than 10 m (33 ft), you can use Bluetooth to connect to compatible devices to your phone without a cord. After you pair a Bluetooth device for the first time, your devices can pair automatically. if your phone is connected to something through Bluetooth, at the top of the screen, you’ll see a Bluetooth icon. Europe melts as heatwave sweeps continent
Firefighters are battling wildfires in Spain and Portugal as Western europe faces its second heatwave in weeks which threatened glaciers in the Alps and worsened drought conditions. the mass of hot air which have pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in large parts of the iberian Peninsula since last week spread to the north and east within days. “We do expect it to worsen,” World Meteorological organization spokeswoman Clare nullis told a briefing in Geneva. “Accompanying this heat is drought. We’ve got very, very dry soils,” she said. “the glaciers in the Alps are really being punished at the moment. it’s been a very bad season for the glaciers. And we’re still relatively early in the summer.” last week an avalanche triggered by the collapse of the largest glacier in the italian Alps amid unusually warm temperatures killed 11 people. heatwaves have become more frequent due to climate change, scientists say. As global temperatures rise over time, heatwaves are expected to become more intense. the previous heatwave to blight France, Portugal and Spain occurred in mid-June. in Spain, some 300 firefighters backed by 17 planes and helicopters were battling a wildfire in the eastern region of extremadura which has ravaged 2,500 hectares (6,180 acres), local officials said. the blaze, which began early last week due to a lightening strike, was predicted to last ‘several
days’, the head of the regional government of extremadura, Guillermo Fernandez Vara, told reporters. Spain’s health ministry warned the “intense heat” could affect people’s “vital functions” and provoke problems like heat stroke. it advised people to drink water frequently, wear light clothes and “remain as long as possible” in the shade or in air-conditioned places. People who work outdoors struggled. in neighbouring Portugal, firefighters were battling a blaze which has ravaged some 2,000 hectares of land in the central municipality of ourem since thursday.the blaze was brought under control last Monday but flared up again on tuesday. Portuguese Prime Minster Antonio Costa urged ‘maximum of caution’. “We have experienced situations like this in the past and we will certainly experience them in the future,” he added. the government issued a “situation of alert” for wildfires for the whole country until at least the weekend, raising the readiness levels of firefighters, police and emergency medical services. the current situation is stirring memories of devastating wildfires in 2017 which claimed the lives of over 100 people in Portugal.
officials in the town of Sintra near lisbon closed a series of tourist attractions such as palaces and monuments in a verdant mountain range popular with visitors as a precaution. in France, temperatures could spike to 39C in some areas, the national weather service Meteo France predicted. Prime Minister elisabeth Borne urged all government ministers to be ready to deal with the consequences of the heatwave which is forecast to last for up to 10 days. “the heat affects people’s health very quickly, especially that of the most vulnerable,” her office said in a statement. Britain issued an extreme heat warning, with temperatures forecast to hit 35C in the southeast of the country. the extreme heat warning was classified as “amber”, the secondhighest alert level, indicating a “high impact” on daily life and people.

Fuel fraud Bid to stop arrests drownings in San Pedro
A man has been arrested and 11 others are being investigated for filling up with fuel on his employer’s credit card without permission. the man had been given the card for work purposes but then allegedly used it to pay for petrol for his own vehicle and passed it to friends to fuel theirs – clocking up 4,000 euros on the card. Guardia Civil officers were contacted by the card owner who explained the employee had been given the credit card and Pin number in order to fill a tractor needed to complete a job. however, the job was delayed and eventually cancelled but the employee held on to the card using it regularly and even passing it ho used it to friends. Bills were clocked up across the Mar Menor and Cartagena. As soon as the business owner saw his credit card bill he cancelled the card, but the cheeky thieves continued to fill-up claiming the boos would pay the next day – adding another 1,000 euros to the debt. the Guardia were able to seize the credit card and arrest the former employee as he tried to the card and have since uncovered more than 20 crimes of misappropriation and fraud.
With 24 people already losing their life by drowning in the Valencian Community so far this year, the regional government has launched a campaign to make people aware of the dangers that exist when swimming or even paddling. the regional councillor for justice and the interior said that the aim is to highlight that ‘unwise behaviour’ in bathing areas can lead to tragedies.

Neighbours fans ‘work out’ plot of finale
Neighbours fans think they have worked out the storyline of the forthcoming series finale. The long-running Australian soap is coming to an end later this month after 37 years on the air. Ahead of the finale, set photos were shared featuring Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, both of whom are returning to the show. Minogue played Charlene Robinson on Neighbours from 1986 to 1988, while Donovan played Scott Robinson, her lover and eventual husband. In one of the shots of the pair in character on the set of the series finale, fans spotted a “for sale” sign. Honing in on this detail, many have deduced that the final episode will see the married Charlene and Scott return to Erinsborough to settle down. “There’s a For Sale sign in the background of this #Neighbours pic
with #Kylie I reckon they move back to Erinsborough to start a family,” one person wrote. “For Sale signs on two of the houses behind Scott and Charlene… major clue to how Neighbours is going to wrap up?” another speculated. Minogue and Donovan recently shared images of themselves behind the scenes to their personal Instagram accounts. Last month, Donovan teased his “emotional” final scenes with Minogue, also joking that there would be “a bit of denim involved”.

Gentleman Jack star responds to cancellation Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones has posted a tribute to the show following its abrupt cancellation after two seasons. Premiering in 2019, the BBC One and HBO series created by Sally Wainwright zoomed in on the life of Yorkshire landowner and queer icon Anne Lister, which was thoroughly documented in her diaries. Jones plays the fourth wall-breaching protagonist opposite Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle, who portrays Anne’s love interest Ann Walker. “I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on our beautiful journey making this show,” Jones shared on Instagram, alongside a video blooper reel from season two. “While it is sad news Gentleman Jack will not be renewed, this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought

joy, emotion and creativity and gave me a real connection to you as its audience.” The Vigil star went on to outline the impact that the series has had in keeping Anne Lister’s memory alive, detailing the statues and plaques that have been put up and noting that Anne’s home Shibden Hall “now has more visitors than ever before” too. “I have never been involved in a show that has made such a huge impact and touched my heart like this one has,” Jones continued. “It wasn’t always the easiest job I’ve had… but it was always worth it to see the response it got.” “THANK YOU for all your support. Thank you to Sally Wainwright for bringing us this amazing story and passion,” Jones added, before going on to praise the costume, make-up and design team, as well as the entire cast and crew too.

House-hunters seek Aging population in Spanish paradise Alicante Province Homebuyers from abroad tend to head for coastal areas, large towns and cities, and tourism hotspots, depending upon their criteria - work, retirement, holidays, or eventually all three at different points in time. At least, that’s the majority, but recent figures released by various estate agencies have shown that a significant minority opt for villages - and specific municipalities have been highlighted as particularly popular. They include locations in coastal provinces, some practically on the beach and others a short drive away, but the ones that seem to attract the highest numbers of potential buyer visits are in provinces hundreds of kilometres from the sea. The top three so far this year are Fuente Obejuna (Córdoba province), and Garcirrey and El Milano (Salamanca province, in the centre-northern region of Castilla y León, close to the Portuguese border). If the name of the first of these sounds familiar, that’s probably because of the play written by 17th-century dramatist Lope de Vega, of the same name although he spelled it as ‘Fuente Ovejuna’, the pronunciation is
the same. It’s based on the true story of the resident uprising in 1476 against the occupation of the village, eight years earlier, by the Order of Calatrava at the behest of King Enrique IV. This literary and theatrical link is what makes Fuente Obejuna a day-trip hotspot for tourists in the Córdoba area. Garcirrey currently has fewer than 70 residents, so peace and quiet is guaranteed, as is a real rural lifestyle - a country hotel with its own riding stables gets plenty of year-round trade. El Milano, home to approximately 115 residents, is in the heart of two nature reserves - the Cerezal de Peñahorcada and La Zarza de Pumareda - and close to the river Duero, which becomes the Douro when it flows into Portugal and is a key wine region both sides of the border. Island dreams Villages on the islands where more than half the property viewings so far this year have been by foreign home-hunters - whether would-be expats, existing expats looking to relocate, or residents outside Spain seeking a holiday bolthole - include three major coastal tourism magnets in Mallorca:
Cala Ratjada, Cala Millor, and Cala Bona. The first of these, a traditional working fishing port in the village of Capdepera on the north-east coast with a long string of beaches and coves - from which you can see the neighbouring island of Menorca on a clear day - has long proven to be a Mecca for German holiday-home owners, especially those with children, but has never become overly commercialised; Cala Ratjada, like the rest of Capdepera, has plenty of tourism facilities and services for convenience, yet has never lost its historic essence or its quaint, rustic character. The other two are neighbours, and their names suggest a friendly rivalry between them: Cala Bona means ‘good cove’, and Cala Millor means ‘better cove’. Both are in a very builtup area, but with a small population, meaning they remain relatively peaceful just lively enough to ensure a holiday atmosphere, without being noisy and crowded. They are part of the seaside village of Son Servera, although the southern half of Cala Millor belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
The age of the population in the province of Alicante continues to increase, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Figures show there is a notable increase in the average age and an increase in people who are within the highest age groups. The average age of the population is currently 44.27 years, almost five more than two decades ago. By sex, women average 45.30 years, while with men it is 43.23. Due to a slowdown in the number of births in the province, there is an imbalance between the number of older people and the number of young people: the median age. This is 45.54 years for the population as a whole, in women it increases to 46.47 and in men it is 44.64. Those over 65 now make up 20.65 percent of the province’s population. This proportion has been growing steadily since 1975, even during a time of limited rejuvenation, the boom years between 1998 and 2008. Forty years ago, this percentage was just half what it is today. Of course the figures are skewed in Alicante Province due to the large number of elderly residents in tourist areas such
as the coast, which makes these areas even older than those inland. Torrevieja and Orihuela are the municipalities with the highest percentage of people over 65 years of age, 23.27 and 23.08 percent respectively.
However, the highest rates of people over 85 years of age are found, by far, in Alcoy and Elda; these cities have, respectively, 3.47 and 3.26 percent of inhabitants in that older age group.

Keep cocktails cool in the sun Heatwave foods: refreshing and low-calorie The number one rule to slim down during the summer months is to stay hydrated. The most important tip for a heatwave and hot weather is to make sure you stay completely hydrated. Slimmers should be drinking between two to three litres of cold water a day, or in other forms such as tea or lemon water, which will increase the capacity to burn calories by up to 30 percent. Experts recommend drinking before you eat. The weight loss hack consists of drinking two cups of water before every meal as this will keep you hydrated and less likely to overeat. It is also key to avoid alcohol to lose weight in summer as it is dehydrating, calorie-dense and can hinder any weight loss goals. Drinking hot green tea throughout the day is a good tip as studies show that a hot drink can decrease the amount of heat stored in your body and cause you to sweat it out. Plus, green tea includes an antioxidant that aids in weight loss, so you can cool down and lose weight. In terms of food, summer is the perfect time to go for salads. A fresh salad full of nutrients will keep dieters feeling full in the hot weather. However, it is important to avoid high-fat
salad dressings. Instead, opt for a splash of balsamic vinegar with salt and pepper. For snacks, dieters should be opting for summer staples like berries, mangoes, peaches, corn, peppers and tomatoes which are all rich in vitamins and fibre; making you feel full for longer. It’s not all strict choices though, during the summer months slimmers should treat themselves to a frozen sweet treat...think mini ice-cream cones and mini popsicles, and make mini-muffins at home. The mini size is actually great portion control mechanism for adults. Dieticians believe that there are three foods which are extremely beneficial for weight loss during the hot weather: eggs, leafy greens and melon.
Eggs are a delicious protein to add to your breakfast and also a rich source of the amino acid tryptophan, which means that they help you to sleep better for longer by telling your brain to shut down for the night. Leafy greens like spinach and other dark leafy greens are perfect to keep hydrated for their high-water content. They are also easily digestible and low in calories. Finally, melon is the perfect summer food and super refreshing in the heat. It can be eaten from, like an icepop and can even be cooked on the BBQ with a sprinkling of feta. The summer fruit is not only refreshing and will keep dieters hydrated, but also contains lycopene, which protects from sun exposure.
Summer is in full flow and whether you’re relaxing in the garden or hosting friends, keeping your favourite beverage cold beneath the beating sunshine can be a challenge. How can you keep your summer drinks chilled for longer? The sunshine is a welcome addition after all that rain, but during the heatwave, keeping your gin and tonic chilled beneath the sweltering sun can be a challenge. Though ice cubes are the obvious solution, some people may worry this will water down their perfectly made beverage. However, experts say that less is not necessarily more when it comes to putting ice in your drink. A mixologists and drinks experts say that the usual reactions is to say ‘Don’t put too much ice in my drink as I don’t want a watery cocktail or
G&T. Expert explain that adding fewer cubes of ice to your drink can actually result in a warm and watery drink. One ice cube cannot stay frozen for very long, meaning it will melt sharpish, making your cocktails or G&T’s watery and not very cold either, defeating the very purpose of using ice cubes in the first place. You actually need to reverse this logic and use more ice, filling up
Herb hack Keeping herbs fresh in Spain is tricky at th best of times and even more so in the current wilting temperatures. A lesserknown method to make herbs last longer is to remove any rubber bands or plastic ties holding the herbs together. Then, cleanse them in a salad
spinner or under the cold tap. Next, place them in a clean tea towel to dry. Once they are dry, wrap them up in a damp paper towel, then place the herbs safely inside a reusable plastic bag or an airtight plastic box – voila. Your herbs should stay fresh and tasty for longer.
your glass to the top to ensure the ice cubes and your drink stay chilled for longer. So instead of scrimping on the ice, pack your glass with ice all the way to the top, just like a mixologist would do in a bar. This works as the ice cubes keep each other frozen for longer, meaning your drink will be less diluted as the drink stays cooler for longer, meaning no more watery G&T’s.
Another very effective hack is to place the herbs in a jar with water. This is especially handy for the hardest herbs to care for, such as basil. A recent study showed that 4.5 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables were wasted every year in the UK alone.

Seasonal fruit prices rise by up to 511%
Speculation by intermediaries coupled with the rise in energy costs has pushed the price of summer seasonal fruit up by over 500% in some instances. Agricultural union, Unió de Llauradors, carried out a study that shows the scandalous difference in the price of some fruit and vegetable products between the field and the supermarket shelf. Juan López, a vegetable exporter explained that while there is some speculation by intermediaries, “fruits and vegetables go through a long process called the value chain in which costs are incorporated that influence the price.” The organization chose some examples of fruit and vegetable products and compared their price at origin in the field with official data for price points further down the supply chain, at wholesale markets and intermediaries and finally on supermarket shelves. The data reveals that, with this exorbitant increase in food, the farmers are the ones who benefit least. The experts said that the figures show farmers do not benefit to the same extent as the other links in the agrifood chain with quite obvious inequalities between the various stages between field and shelf. The major price increase occurs between intermediaries and final distribution to the consumer. Carles Peris from the agri organisation said “If we choose as an example one of the seasonal products that has been talked about the most in recent weeks, such as watermelon, the
producer receives an average of €0.36/kg, in the intermediary phase it reaches €0.93/kg and in distribution it goes up to €2.20/ kg, which the consumer ends up paying. The difference between the field and distribution of watermelons is 511%. It can be seen right now how some major supermarket chains are launching offers of watermelons that are under €0.90/kg, which shows that they adjust the prices as they please.” A study by University of Alicante scientist Fernando Maestre showed that consumers in Leipzig Germany are paying less for watermelon than consumers here in the Alicante province who live just a few kilometres from where the fruit is grown. With regular varieties of melon, more of the same happens. In the field, the fruit costs an average of €0.47/ kg, in the intermediary phase it is priced at €1.66/kg and in supermarkets, €1.85/kg. The difference between field and supermarket is 293%. As for oranges, at one stage, farmers were pushed right down to €0.11/kg, in the intermediary stage the price reached €0.67/ kg and on shelves, oranges were priced at an average of €1.49/ kg. The difference between origin and supermarket was a staggering 1,298%. Another popular summer fruit, the nectarine, is being bought from farmers at €0.67/kg, in the intermediary phase, prices go up to €1.75/kg and the price to consumer is €3.44/kg. The difference between what is paid to farmers and what consumers
pay is 412%. One of the most staple household vegetables is the potato. Farmers are receiving an average of €0.34/kg. In the intermediary stage, it doesn’t rise too much (to an average of €0.53/kg) but where it skyrockets is at the supermarket where prices reach an average of €1.37/kg – an increase of more than 300%. Faced with this situation, La Unió proposes the establishment of public procedures for the awareness and establishment of commercial margins. The organisation wants to establish a public system for referencing production costs and to improve the overall functioning of the supply chain. It also wants to include a clause that any benefits generated further down the supply chain should be shared with producers. La Unió also proposes better regulation of markets, as well as monitoring and sanctioning price agreements so there is no detriment to the farmer. The worst performing crop at the moment is the orange. Farmers and unions generally agree that in order to recoup cultivation costs, the fruit should not be sold for under 25 cents per kilo but in recent weeks, prices have been pushed down to anywhere between 7 and 12 cents. As such, farmers are having to sell the fruit at a loss which is unsustainable. A large part of the problem is the arrival to the European market of cheap citrus fruits from Egypt and South Africa after the Russian market became unavailable to these producers.

Weekend warriors might have it right Experts say that those of us who save our bursts of exercise for the weekend might be doing enough to stay fit. A new study suggests that a big burst of exercise at the weekend could be as effective as spreading activity over the week. US researchers analysed 350,000 people over the course of a decade to see how well so-called weekend warriors fared in comparision with those who undertake diligent weekday
exercise. The findings, published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal, suggest the type and total amount of exercise count, rather than how many sessions. At least 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity exercise is recommended. Going for a brisk walk, a light effort cycle on a bike or playing doubles in tennis would count towards this goal. Health experts in guidance published
by the NHS suggest that you could opt instead for 75 minutes of vigorous activity - something like running, swimming or playing a game of football. Many of the participants in the US study clocked up 75 minutes of vigorous activity over the course of a week. But some packed the 75 minutes into one or two sessions rather than spacing it out over the entire week. Those who reached their recommended level of activity,
regardless of whether they did so slowly during the week or in an intense weekend session, had a lower death risk than those who did less than the recommend amount overall. British Heart Foundation senior cardiac nurse Joanne Whitmore said: “This large study suggests that, when it comes to exercise, it doesn’t matter when you do it. The most important thing is that physical activity is undertaken in the first place. Whether
www.costablancapeople.com
you cram your exercise in on the weekend or spread it across the week, aim for 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity each week. Exercise can improve your health, reducing your risk of heart and circulatory diseases like heart attack and stroke. Moderateintensity activities make you breathe harder and make your heartbeat faster than usual but you should still be able to have a conversation whilst doing them.”

I am my wife’s main carer, but I am finding it difficult lately and feel overwhelmed. It doesn’t help that she has always been domineering and demanding, even before her confinement, and she does nothing but criticise and order me about. I have asked her if I can bring in a carer to help with the load, but she refuses. Friends have been kind enough to take me out for a while, but my wife is constantly on the phone making me feel guilty. I am at breaking point. I want desperately to visit my family in England - this is a second marriage and my wife has no interest in seeing my family, and also won’t agree with them coming to visit us.
CostaBlancaPeople 19th - 25th July 2022
You must explain to your wife that you can no longer carry the load by yourself, and it is affecting your health. In fact, I would suggest you see your GP and tell them how looking after your wife is affecting you. This will help cement your case when you tell your wife you are bringing in some help. And you must be firm; don’t ask. There’s lots of help available from charities who will offer respite, and also carers can be employed at an hourly rate. You must then take up a weekly hobby or two, or see friends and then once your wife is used to things and with appropriate cover, plan a holiday back home to see your family, or have them visit you and stay nearby. When you do go out, you must
ask your wife not to phone constantly, and maybe say your phone will be off for a while. She will become accustomed to these changes, and above all else it will do her good to see other people and have some variety in her life.

Personalised cancer vaccine trials A ground-breaking vaccine, made using similar technology to Oxford-AstraZeneca’s COVID vaccine, sees DNA from an individual patient’s tumour and cut and pasted into a harmless virus, which is then injected into the body to train the immune system to be alert for cancer cells. The
personalised cancer vaccine has produced “really hopeful” early results. The jab is being given to patients after they complete conventional treatment for head and neck cancers. These patients usually have a high chance of the cancer returning.

DGT Advice for Camping Vehicles We are already getting set for a different summer this year than recently. There are fewer restrictions, the weather looks set to be hot, and many people are choosing a different form of holiday, with camping expected to be the choice of many more people than usual, in particular camping in vehicles. For this reason, and facing the summer period, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has launched a series of tips to choose the best option of all. It is common for the DGT to serve as a guide for drivers and use their profiles on social networks to provide educational guides on safety. But perhaps this does not usually happen when it comes to recommending the perfect holiday solution. Differences between caravan, motorhome and camper van The first thing that the DGT explains is that there are three types of vehicles that allow us to carry the house on our backs. They are the caravans, motorhomes and camper vans, which now enjoy great acceptance in the market. In the first case, caravans, they are vehicles without a motor and that need to be towed. As long as they do not exceed 3,500 kg maximum mass, they can be driven with a B driving licence without problems. Motorhomes, the best known model, are motor vehicles that have a living area and that can vary depending on the model. The maximum number of seats allowed is reflected in the vehicle registration certificate. Finally, camper vans are also motorised and, although they have not been manufactured to function as motorhomes, they can be conditioned to live inside. They are subject to the same traffic regulations as other cars. Now we know the difference, the DGT offers us some advice. Going backwards When it comes to towing a caravan, the most cumbersome manoeuvre may be preparing to drive in reverse gear. If it is the first time that you drive a vehicle with these characteristics, it can be difficult to get used to all its peculiarities.
For this reason, the official body asks unaccustomed drivers to “practice beforehand”, guaranteeing that nerves and haste will not be combined with lack of experience at the worst possible moment. Wind The wind is the number one enemy of the caravan and motorhome on the road, given the low aerodynamics, to a greater or lesser extent, of the models available on the market. If crosswind gusts are dangerous in general, their tremendous effect is greatly increased by driving a caravan. When driving a motorhome, it may not be so dangerous, but it can be very uncomfortable. Its voluminous bodywork is to blame for this. Height The total height of the caravan or motorhome is also a fundamental aspect and it is a fact that we should learn it by heart to avoid possible damage when we enter a tunnel or other structure across the road. On the road, a low tunnel may appear and it is possible you could get trapped if you are not very careful and assess the dangers of the situation. Also, the great width of these houses with wheels can prevent passage through those small towns of deep Spain with narrow streets. Speed The maximum speed allowed for a motorhome with a maximum authorised mass equal to or less than 3,500 kg is the same as for any car. In any case, it is advisable to moderate the speed, due to its large size. Motorhomes that exceed the 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass and caravans do have a specific limitation: 90 km/h on highways and motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Be careful when parking The difficulty of motorhomes is their large size, in every way, and so it makes things tricky when you want to park. When making these manoeuvres, we must pay close attention to the signs that indicate a height limit (those of gauge) or width, to avoid getting stuck, which is the greatest danger when parking. The DGT
emphasises, therefore, these tips that should be taken into account if it is the first time that we buy one of these very useful vehicles in summer. Camping Once you reach your campsite it is normal to put down the stabilising legs, maybe open the windows, and prepare for a great holiday. However, whereas on the campsite this is fine, this is not permitted on the road. In Spain, the law is quite clear, motorhomes and campers are not allowed to “camp” on the street. But the question arises as to what defines “camping”, and what is simply a vehicle which is “parked”, albeit of a larger size, in the same way that any other car or van may occupy a space on the road. There is a distinct difference between “camping” and “parking”. If any of these actions are performed, the vehicle is considered to be “camping”. Emitting noise, such as by using a generator. Extending sun blinds and shades. Vehicle stabilisers or “feet” deployed. Emptying or disposing of fluids. Furniture such as tables and chairs placed outside the vehicle. Side or “swing” windows opened, protruding from the vehicle perimeter. The above activities can only be conducted in authorised places, such as campsites. There are activities that a motorhome or campervan can perform whilst stopped which do not fall into the category of camping, in which the normal traffic rules apply. Occupants inside the vehicle, eating or sleeping. Opening the skylight or rooftop window, as this does not protrude from the vehicle perimeter. Using wheel chocks on an incline. Turning the wheels so as they are secured against the kerb. All of those activities are permitted, so long as the vehicle is correctly and legally parked. These activities also apply day or night.
During the summer months, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) will focus part of its efforts on a key factor in road traffic incidents, inappropriate speed. To do this, they will launch specific surveillance campaigns throughout the summer. It will do so with an entire arsenal of devices, among which are mobile radars installed in vehicles, and for which the DGT has been showing off the two new models chosen for this purpose, cameras, helicopters and even drones. According to the provisional data for 2021, 588 people died in traffic incidents due to road exits or head-on collisions: events in which speed was a transversal factor. To this information they add the report that the European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO) has prepared on this concurrent factor in 2021: 30% of road deaths are caused by excessive or inappropriate speed. The DGT, therefore, will monitor in a special way that the established speed limits are complied with, controlling, above all, the risk sections associated with it, as well as those points where traffic exceeds the established limit and there is a high incident rate. Although they will announce the existence of controls to drivers, there will also be camouflaged mobile radars
on which the specific coordinates are not revealed. To assist in their monitoring of speeds, there are 545 mobile radars that (both during this specific campaign and the rest of the summer) will be installed in both marked and unmarked vehicles of the Guardia Civil. Identifying the latter is complicated because they are conventional models that have been adapted for these surveillance tasks. They are usually of different brands: Citroën, Peugeot, Opel, SEAT, Renault, Ford... Now the General Directorate of Traffic has shown two of the models that it will use during this summer to monitor that traffic complies with the established limits. In the case of the vehicles that do circulate identified, it will be several units of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and in the case of the cars that seek to go unnoticed, it is a blue SEAT Exeo, which has a few years under its belt. Using both newer and older vehicles means that the Guardia Civil can maintain an element of surprise, as almost any vehicle on the roads could turn out to be a traffic car. This fleet of passenger cars will be joined by the camouflaged vans that the DGT uses to detect and sanction the use of mobile phones by drivers
as well as the correct use of seat belts. They will not be the only vehicles since the DGT has just incorporated 34 camouflaged motorcycles that are part of a pilot project that will be carried out during the weekends of this summer. With this initiative, the aim is to minimise the incident rate of motorcyclists and for this they will control the roads frequented by this type of driver, where they will check if they carry out responsible driving. To the vehicles (camouflaged or not), the DGT adds other surveillance systems such as the 780 fixed radars located on hard shoulders, poles and gates and the 92 stretches. It also has 245 cameras (29 are new) to monitor the use of seat belts and mobile phones at the wheel: 60% of them are located on conventional roads. On the other hand, the DGT has a staff of 23 drones (which identify infractions related to mobile phones and seat belts) and ten helicopters equipped with MX15 cameras, the ones in charge of giving life to the Pegasus surveillance system with which excesses of speed, overtaking with a continuous line, improper changes of direction, absence of the seat belt, use of the telephone at the wheel, etc, are all closely monitored.

FRoZEN CoCKTAILS
Great for cooling down in a heatwave, you can try these frozen cocktails at home. Remember to be careful when drinking alcohol in extremely high temperatures as you can easily become dehydrated. Try to drink water between alcoholic drinks to keep yourself hydrated.
Frozen watermelon and Cava slushy Ingredients 1 watermelon (about 2kg) 200ml Cava , plus a little extra 3 mint sprigs, plus extra to serve ½ lemon , zest pared 50g sugar
Method STEP 1 Cut the watermelon into quarters and remove the pips using a teaspoon. If you’re serving the same day or next day, keep six wedges or slices back for decorating and chill. Cut the flesh into 3cm cubes (you should have about 1kg fruit, with the rind discarded) and sit in a baking parchment-lined container where the cubes fit snugly. Pour the Cava over the fruit, cover and freeze for 4 hrs, or up to 1 week. STEP 2 Put the mint, lemon and sugar in a small pan with 50ml water, and bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 mins until the sugar dissolves and turns syrupy. Cover and leave to cool completely, then strain.
STEP 3 Put the frozen Cava-soaked watermelon cubes in a food processor with the sugar syrup. Blend well, stopping and pushing the mixture towards the blades with a spatula every few seconds, if you need to, until it’s a slushy consistency. Add a splash more Cava to make a smooth slush. Spoon or pour into six chilled glasses. Garnish with the chilled watermelon wedges and little mint sprigs.
Frozen Margarita Ingredients 50ml tequila 25ml triple sec (Cointreau) 25ml lime juice 15ml sugar syrup large handful of ice wedge of lime , to garnish Method STEP 1 Put all the ingredients except the lime wedge in a blender and blitz until smooth. Tip into a cocktail, margarita or rocks glass, garnish and serve. TO MAKE THE SUGAR SYRUP: You will need 300g caster sugar, 150ml water 1 sterilised glass bottle or jar Method STEP 1 Dissolve 300g caster sugar in 150ml water over a low heat.
STEP 2 Leave to cool and bottle for future use in cocktails. Store in the fridge.

TALES FRom THE ToP FLIGHT n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Another seven days of football life has passed us by and so much has changed in this short period of time. Manchester United fans are dreaming of the Premier League title after they beat Liverpool 4-0 in a game that will possibly go down in history. Funnily enough, King Klopp wasn’t that bothered about the defeat given it was a pre-season friendly abroad purely designed to make money. Mind you, United had more than just a pointless game of football to get excited about. After a very slow start in the window, things are hotting up at Old Trafford. Christian Eriksen has foolishly opted to move from Brentford where he had everything set up around him. At United, he has one or two egos to contend with and could well fade into the background which would be a bit of a waste. Erik ten Hag has also identified the fact that he needs a new back four and has sorted out half of it. The young defender from Ajax is to be joined by a slightly older defender from Ajax - you know, to join Eriksen who used to play for Ajax under United’s new manager who used to coach Ajax. Lisandro Martinez is a left-sided centre-back who’s signing has no link to Harry Maguire probably
being stripped of the captaincy this coming season. Ten Hag is still pushing for Frenkie de Jong who, he believes, really wants to move to Manchester. Where did Frenkie used to play before Barcelona? Bands getting back together, and all that. Let’s stay with facts rather than fiction at this point. Some other interesting deals happened last week - Brentford went all clever again and signed Hull’s Keane Lewis-Potter who is very, very good. If the Bees can keep hold of big Ivan Toney they will be fun to watch going forward again.
Chelsea finally unveiled Raheem Sterling who reminded us that he was just a boy when he left London and now he returns a man. A man with several trophies in his cabinet and Tommy T will be hoping there are more to add. The Blues also finally nabbed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, about six years after he was first linked to the Premier League. Leeds United waved goodbye to Raphinha who finally got his wish to move to the very broke Barcelona they followed the £50m signing by splashing the same on Lewandowski. Move along, nothing dodgy in the books here. On the rubbish rumour side of things - well, Nathan Ake is likely to be handcuffed to the Emptyhad a little longer meaning that Chelsea won’t be able to pay double what they sold him to Bournemouth for. Instead, Tuchel will look to bring in yet another perenially linked to the Premier League defender in Jules Kounde or some kid from PSG that I probably should have heard of. If Mathijs de Ligt gets his way, he’ll be playing in Munich next season and this could be very bad news for Mikel Arteta. Juve would like Arsenal’s one decent centre-back to replace him and have decided that is Gabriel.
Local match anglers unite in annual charity match On Wednesday the 13th of July Rods N Reels fished the annual charity match at El Bosquet. Thirty two anglers who travelled from as far away as Valencian City and the Andalucian region, along with members of various local club’s took part to raise money for local families in need. Over 400 euros was raised which will go to buy numerous essential toiletries for local families that are living below the breadline. The last thing that people think of in these situations are basic clean-living needs, toothpaste, shower gel, soap etc, but this is vital in keeping self-respect and avoiding illness etc. Sponsors included the complex itself which reduced the pegging
fee, Steve Capel from Apollo Air who donated the after-match barbecue and Iceland who have kindly agreed to a 15% discount on all our purchases. Many thanks go out to all the people that attended and kindly donated both cash and goods and to Bill Reade who ran the match along with help from myself and Mick Hill. Now to the match. When you put a lot of anglers close together and put the venue under more pressure than it is used to, then the fish tend to back off and the weights drop. This was in fact the case but although the match was also fished in very hot sunny conditions with temperatures over 30 degrees a great day was had by all that
took part. Winner on the day and now annual charity champion was local angler Barry Homer. Drawn on peg B1 he fished maggot on the pole across for 16.20kg. In second place was Tony Felstead. Tony was drawn on the end peg 24 and fished pellet on the pole for 14.94kg. In third place was Russell Davidson who from peg 28 fished the pole again on pellet, down the middle or tight across for 14.38kg. The full results are shown below a couple of anglers did not weigh in but in fact everyone caught. Ian Brown
Despite having more left-backs than hairstyles, Arteta is interested in Man City’s Zinchenko. Apparently he likes the fact he can be used in many different ways, unlike his hair. Leeds need cover for Patrick Bamford as he is likely to break down again at any moment. They want another PSG player I’ve never heard of. No, not Neymar. Mind you, I’m sure they’d like Neymar but it’s pretty unlikely. Also on the Elland Road radar is Juan Mata - is Mata so damn nice that he can make the move from United to Leeds without anyone batting an eyelid? Frank Lampard needs reinforcements or Everton are just going to be as rubbish as last season. To improve that, he’d like a winger with absolutely no end product Adama Traore wasn’t taken by Barca in the end and Wolves don’t want him so Goodison does make sense. Eddie Howe has been bemoaning the prices quoted when Newcastle come a knocking. They’ve not really had the window they hoped for (yet) and aim to improve that by signing Chelsea’s Callum HudsonOdoi - surely ranked between 8 and 12 on the list of current Chelsea wide options. He’d also like Real Sociedad’s Ibralite to lead their line next campaign. Alexander Isak could be tempted to St James’ Park. After Lewa left Bayern, their CEO was heard talking up Harry Kane as a quality player and someone they’d quite like to see in Munich sometime soon. That’ll please Conte. The irritable Italian would rather see Memphis Depay add to his attacking options, but the Dutchman quite likes it in Catalonia. Understandably, David Moyes likes the look of Chelsea loanee Armando Broja - West Ham will test Chelsea’s desire to loan him out again by asking to buy him for £25m. Finally, both United and Chelsea are keeping an eye on Lens’ attacking right-back Jonathan Clauss. Let’s just hope he has a reasonable release clause, eh? Yep, we’re ending on that high note today…
