the mayor of torrevieja presented the new traffic study for the port area this week. Accompanied by deputy mayor and councillor for Commerce and hospitality rosario martínez and the councillor for traffic, Federico Alarcón, the mayor presented the study which looked at traffic volume and flow for the soon to be remodelled port area of the town.the study, which cost €16,093 to complete, provides key information for the planning of access roads to the port. the suggested new traffic flow, also part of the study, has been designed both from the point of view of private vehicles that would access the leisure facilities, market and fairground, as well as the operation of public transport, as well as the traffic needs of the commercial port facilities such as the fish market, marina Salinas sports port and real Club náutico. the mayor, eduardo dolón, explained that the study proposes that traffic enters the port of torrevieja via two entry lanes and an exit lane on the paseo Vistalegre. the section of road would be increased, so the current median would have to be refurbished. Likewise, at the intersection of Calle San policarpo with ramón Gallud, the study proposes the creation of a roundabout to improve traffic circulation. in addition, a large roundabout (of 32 metres in diameter) is planned, right at the current confluence of Calle maría parodi with Avenida de la Libertad. this will be the main traffic entry roundabout to the port through the new road that will be built and that will allow traffic in and out of the port. by making these changes, Avenida de la Libertad would be pedestrianised in its entirety. the study also proposes Continued page 10

A dilapidated municipal building in orihuela is to be demolished and the space used for the benefit of the local community. the building, which will come down in mid-September, has been on the verge of collapse for around four years, posing a rick to the generalLocalspublic.have been asking for the government to act for years and now finally, Councillor Angel Luis muñoz has announced plans to tackle the issue. he said: “during the week beginning 12th September this building will be demolished and the site will be cleaned up, leaving a space for r4esidents to safely enjoy the fiestas held in october.” experts are now evaluating the safest way to conduct the demolition and to ensure that residents and surrounding buildings, including the hermitage, are protected. health and safety procedures will be followed at every stage.despite long-term calls for the state of the building to be addressed, not everyone is in favour of the demolition, with many believing that the budling should be restored and renovated to preserve the history of the city. the mayor of orihuela, Carolina Gracia, has called be people to remain ‘calm’ adding that she feels some people are trying to use this issue to ‘torpedo’ the work being done by the government. She has, however, also thanked the residents of Calle barrio nuevo for their patience over the years. She said: “We are please to announce that this building, that possesses a very high risk to the safety of residents, will be demolished ahead of october so that the festivities planned can be held with maximum security.” the demolition and clearing of the land will take place at a cost of around 31,000 euros and there are already plans being discussed to regenerate and adapt the space for future use that would benefit the community.

At the courthouse the victim seized the opportunity to ask for help, and the alleged aggressor was arrested as he waited for her in the gardens of the courthouse. the prosecutor’s office is initially requesting sentences for the defendant that add up to 25 years in prison for two crimes of sexual assault, and two separate crimes of illegal detention, mistreatment, violation of sentence, coercion and threats.

2 www.costablancapeople.comCostaBlancaPeople 6th - 12th September 2022News Register to Vote - Your Vote Matters!

“there is general apathy amongst the international community when it comes to voting in Spanish Local elections, it is if they are sleep walking oblivious to what is happening around them. many residents with the entitlement to vote fail to ensure that their name is actually entered on the list of electors and many of those individuals whose name is on the list of electors do not exercise their right to vote on election day. the effects of this for the residents of orihuela Costa is that instead of returning a third of the councillors sitting on orihuela Council we have none, because of the lack of appropriate representation from the coast has resulted in orihuela Costa suffering blatant discrimination and has resulted in the area having the poorest level of services of any area within the orihuela municipality. Any eU national can register to vote at any time at the town hall, but non eU residents (the british expat community) can only register from the 1st of december to the 15th of January and to be eligible to vote you must be on the padrón and have been a resident for at least three unbroken years. orihuela Costa has a population exceeding 33,000 people, and within 10 years orihuela Costa will as big as the other 26 districts combined, of the twenty five councillors sitting on the orihuela Council, none represents the coast, when we should in fact have at least 8/9 councillors. the effects are that the whole population of the coast continues to be discriminated against, essential services are denied to them and all sectors of the orihuela Costa community suffer, in spite the coast being the major contributor to the revenue of the orihuela municipality. Spain operates a system of proportional representation. this means that in order to elect a councillor, a certain percentage of the votes must be cast. the votes cast from orihuela Costa in the last local elections were only sufficient to have one councillor! this situation can so easily change if more residents from the international community actually make the effort to vote.Unlike the system in the UK you do not vote for an individual to represent your ward. proportional representation means that each political party has a list of candidates that are prioritised by their political party, hence you vote for a party not for an individual. Who gains access to this list is left to the political parties concerned. As the main political parties in orihuela have no presence on orihuela Costa, e.g. no offices, no political meetings, no constituent surgeries etc. is it any wonder that the lists of candidates offered by these parties have nobody on them that actually comes from the coast?. if it’s your intention to vote, watch out for our special events around the coast explaining the registration process, in the meantime you can help by checking your padrón (municipal census) that your details are correct, especially your address orihuela Costa must ensure that it has a sufficient number of councillors who will actually advocate for services and resources for the coast. All residents with the right to vote must ensure that their voice is heard and that they contribute to ending the blatant discrimination suffered by all orihuela Costa www.pioc.espioCgrupo/https://www.facebook.com/residents.”

Children will find classrooms ‘back to normal’ when they return for the new school year. the requirement for classrooms to be fully ventilated has been dropped, which will make lessons much more comfortable once the cooler weather arrives. the need for distances to be kept in the dining halls and for children to be organised into bubble groups has also been scrapped according to the updated document on prevention, hygiene and health

promotion measures against CoVid-19 for educational centres. there are still some recommendations in place, but these are more in line with general health recommendations. For example,as long as the epidemiological situation allows, it is recommended that classrooms are ventilated several times a day, between classes, and that the intensive cleaning regimes are relaxed in favour of prepandemic cleaning routines.

Weather experts have said that a hurricane or tropical cyclone could hit Spain this week. After what has been an exceptionally hot summer (with three consecutive and extreme heatwaves), temperatures in the mediterranean Sea are also well exceeding usual levels. A warning was issued last week by Aemet, Spain’s meteorological association.Aemetmeteorologist, Juan Jesús González Alemán, raised the alarm via a recent twitter thread about the formation of a tropical cyclone at an unusual latitude. the weather formation, said the expert, may well become a hurricane that could approach or even reach the peninsula in the coming days. González Alemán’s tweet read: “Close attention to this! it is still a scenario to be confirmed, but it is possible that the iberian peninsula will have to keep an eye on the formation of a hurricane so abnormally high in latitude. the trajectories predicted by the models point to our region. We will follow the Gonzálezdevelopment.”Alemánis a researcher of cyclones and climate change and recognizes that the most surprising of these types of predictions as a whole is “the coincidence of such an intense cyclone approaching the iberian peninsula.” he also added, “ this also gives greater potential for a powerful extratropical transition, something that should not be ignored.” on the possibility of the weather

Local residents were shocked to learn of an armed robbery at the well known hernández jewellery shop, located on torrevieja’s Calle maría parodi. the incident took place on Wednesday evening at around 7pm when a man, wearing a cap and mask entered the establishment carrying two large bags. he is alleged to have pulled a gun on the shop manager marta mercader hernández and her employee, ordering them to open the drawers where the jewelry is displayed. the employee recognized the man, who apparently had come to the shop a few days earlier accompanied by his partner. After filling the bags with several items of jewellery and other valuables, the man is alleged to have fled by car down Calle pedro Lorca once he realised he had been recognised. Customers from nearby businesses came out in pursuit of him trying to stop the vehicle in which he was fleeing by pushing bins out onto the road, which he dodged - although in one near miss he did lose his license plate. the police and the Guardia Civil immediately arrived at the shop to take statements from the staff and study security footage.

Off duty Guardia Civil find 35kg of hash while fishing While out on a fishing trip on thursday, two friends (one a retired Guardia Civil officer and the other an active officer enjoying a day off) came across an unlikely object floating int he sea. the two friends, retired officer, pedro Lucas Segarra, who worked in the traffic department in torrevieja, and the officer Cervantes, who is still active in traffic in Cartagena, set out from torrevieja on a fishing boat, to spend a day at sea. they headed to San pedro del pinatar and around midday, they spotted something floating in the sea. they had guessed from the brown color that it could potentially be a bundle of drugs or something similar. As they approached the floating package, they saw that it was indeed a bundle of hashish, wrapped in hessian. immediately, they contacted central command in Alicante. their colleagues asked the pair to bring the 35 kilo package to torrevieja port where a patrol car was waiting to take the drugs into evidence.

Experts warn of potential hurricane this week

front developing into a hurricane, the Aemet meteorologist, said, “it is a possible scenario, since it has not yet formed, and very complex processes come into play. but it is a fairly serious and representative scenario to monitor and be aware of.” other experts agree. For their part, alerts from the weather team at eltiempo.es point in the same direction. the weather portal indicates that hurricane season was expected to be very active in the Atlantic, but so far this year there have only been three named ‘systems’, a situation that seems to be about to change since, over the next few days, there could be several systems with significant potential. one of these systems would be an unstable zone located in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, at relatively high latitudes. According to the forecasts of various meteorological models, this area of instability could manage to organize itself, initially forming a depression or tropical storm. the national hurricane Center of the United States gives a 70% chance of the formation of this cyclone early this week.ifit does form, the models indicate that the system would move slowly to the northeast, and then turn to the east and move more quickly. it would be then when it would acquire its maximum intensity, with forecasts indicating that it could have the characteristics of a category 1 hurricane from today ( tuesday) and, at least, until thursday.Commenting on whether the hurricane will make landfall in Spain, experts at tutiempo.com point out that it is not yet known with 100% certainty since, firstly, the tropical cyclone has to form and, secondly, its intensity and trajectory will have to be tracked, since tropical cyclones are complex systems with their own dynamic. despite this, several of the main meteorological models indicate that the tropical cyclone could approach the iberian peninsula by thursday of this week.

Likewise, a taxi rank would be established on Calle maría parodi, specifically on plaza Castelar, which will be remodelled. the mayor said that the government team plans to make all this information available to residents, shopkeepers and hoteliers in the area. For this reason, added dolón, “we make ourselves available to citizens so that they can send us the suggestions and contributions they deem appropriate”. in the draft design of the avenue along the promenade, the study proposes the avenue doesn’t have a central median, although the town hall prefers that a median remain, respecting the alignment of the palm trees. Another question, added eduardo dolón, is to determine the extent of the semipedestrianization of the surroundings of the paseo. once all these questions have been clarified, a project will be drafted which will allow the works to start. if all goes well and the corresponding authorizations are obtained from the Generalitat Valenciana, the works on the new port entrance roundabout will begin before the end of this year, once the old maritime buildings have been demolished.

A day’s fishing cost a 51-yearold diver a lot more than what he bargained for when he was caught with almost a hundred young sea urchins in a net bag. officers of the Guardia Civil’s environmental wing, Seprona, surprised the diver as he was fishing in Cabo de las huertas in Aliante. he is now being investigated for crimes related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals, an act punishable by penalties of six months to two years in prison or a fine of eight to twentyfour months, as well as special disqualification for the exercise of the right to hunt or fish during a period of between two and four years. he also faces an administrative penalty of up to 12,000 euros for poaching, as reported by Guardia Civil. officers were on an anti poaching exercise when they caught the man with the sea urchins in a net. he was equipped with a neoprene suit, a harpoon and a trident, so officers proceeded to identify him to check his paperwork to find that he did not have a licence for this type of fishing. Seprona called on Santa pola marine research Centre (CimAr) of the University of Alicante to confirm that the specimens seized were of the species “paracentrotus lividus”, a rock sea urchin, which is a species that is currently listed as protected in both the bern Convention and the barcelona Convention. According to Guardia Civil, within the Valencian Community rock sea urchins are present in specific areas along Alicante coastline and very scarcely elsewhere. Adult specimens can reach a size of up to seven centimetres in diameter and between december and February the part that is eaten is fully developed. For this reason, officers stressed that it is vital that during the rest of the year, specimens are not captured so that the species can complete its biological cycle. in recent years, a notable reduction in its presence on rocky shores has been observed and as such, its capture is strictly regulated. officers seized the harpoon and trident as the man did not have the corresponding authorization. the sea urchins were recovered alive and returned to their natural environment.inaddition to the criminal offence, Seprona has brought the case to the attention of the ministry of Agriculture, environment, Climate Change and rural development, since the diver may have committed both a minor offence for taking sea urchins without a professional licence and serious offence for fishing them in closed season. the minor infraction is punishable by a fine from 60 to 1,200 euros, and the serious one from 601 to 12,000 euros.

With inflation surging, growth stalling, plus an escalating energy crisis which will deteriorate further as the weather turns, there is increasing pressure on the eCb to accelerate the pace of rate hikes, starting with a potential 75bps move next week. interestingly enough, many of those cries have recently surfaced from within Germany, which is a far cry from the old days for the region’s biggest economy. Any mention of a rate hike back then was quickly dismissed by German officialdom. however, the argument to hike just now is more complex one for the eCb, as is much like that of the UK just now, especially given the much-publicised pressure on euro area peripheral government debt. interestingly enough, wholesale gas prices (finally) fell sharply this week, after europe prepared to intervene directly in energy markets, as part of a package aimed at assisting consumers as the winter approaches. As far the single currency, well the sheer strength of the greenback has ensured that eUr/ USd is finding it tough to break meaningfully back above parity (1.0000), even if moves under have not slipped below 0.9900, but the broader euro is faring slightly better. Gbp/eUr is especially weak, moving from nearly 1.1900 at the end of last week, to just over 1.1500. eUr/ JpY has also moved from 136.00 to 140.00 at a time when risk really has been off for markets.

EURO tthe latest economic data will do little to help the eCb sleep at night, as we approach next week’s key eCb meeting. the latest reading for the region has seen inflation top 9%, marking the highest level since the inception of the single currency. Whilst Germany’s inflation level may not have exceeded initial estimates of 8.8%, the data did little increase the perception of imminent easing of inflation throughout the region. there was also evident weakness in manufacturing for the block, with the regionwide S&p Global manufacturing pmi print consolidating below the key 50 region.

GBP We are just a few days away from the queen appointing our new prime minister (pm), with Liz truss the clear leader amongst the conservative party members who get to decide on behalf of the rest of us, who is to run the country until the next general election. in order to gain support from within the party and then(hopefully) the broader public, truss has declared that she would like to help those suffering from a crippling cost of living crisis, by reducing their tax burden. if truss gets the job and goes through with the tax cuts, then the speed that inflation accelerates in the UK is likely to increase by a significant margin. this potential inflation bomb has not been lost on analysts, with some now openly suggesting that UK inflation might move beyond 20% before easing, accelerated by the increasing cost of wholesale gas prices, which represent a large chunk of the UK electricity supply. Whilst the UK may not rely as much on russian gas as the rest of europe, the UK still imports most of its needs, and those imports are based on the daily spot price of wholesale gas, which of course is itself impacted by russian supply pfactors.erhaps it has beenaided by the fact that we are so close to announcing our new pm, but markets have suddenly targeted the pound, resulting in steady declines for sterling throughout the week. Gbp/USd briefly traded under 1.1500 yesterday, which is within 1% of the low ‘cable’* achieved at the beginning of the CoVid days, when the sanctuary of the greenback was very much the order of the day. *Cable refers solely to the GBP/USD exchange rate.

Merchant RememberedSeameninTorrevieja

merchant navy day was remembered in torrevieja on Sunday 4 September, when former seaman and d-day Veteran, Joe billet, attended the Jardin de memoria at La Siesta Church, where he laid a wreath in honour and remembrance of the sacrifices made by the often forgotten and invisible, but very hardworking, seafarers. the tribute simply read, “ to the 60,000 merchant Seamen who lost their lives during World War ii. rip”. pastora Krista, the recently installed minister with the iglesia evangélica española, read a short tribute as pipe Sergeant david heaney, of the torrevieja pipes and drums, played a lament. the commemoration was attended by members of La Siesta evangelical congregation, which also included former merchant navy Captain, howard Cook. merchant navy day honours those who kept britain afloat during both World Wars. it also celebrates the dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers, which although a civilian service, undoubtedly ranks on the same level as the Armed Forces, because of its critical role. the photo shows Joe billet with pastor Krista and david heaney prior to the ceremony.

national police have arrested the manager of a lifeguard company along with eleven staff, all of whom are accused of a series of crimes including professional misconduct. According to reports, the company has been providing lifeguard services to urbanisations across the Alicante province under training certification by a body that is not approved in the Valencian Community. the owner of the company and one of the Alicante based managers, in addition to misconduct, have been acuseed of crimes against the rights of workers, accommodating illegal immigration, fraud, threats and coercion.thebusinessman, who insists that all the charges are unfounded, was arrested on monday last after appearing at the Alicante provincial police Station before UCriF officers (Unit against immigration networks and documentary Falsities). on tuesday, he was released with charges, as were the two managers. the company’s nine lifeguards, six of them foreigners and in an irregular situation in Spain, which prevents them from having residence and work permits, were arrested a week earlier for the crime of ‘professional intrusion’ and were also released after statements wereAccordingtaken. to the UCriF police investigation, through a non-profit organisation, lifeguard courses were given for a fee of 500 euros. the course included theoretical and practical classes but, according to the police, it did not reach the minimum number of hours established by law to practice as a lifeguard. the students paid 200 euros each to start the course and the remaining 300 was deducted from their salary. officers also revealed that the final diploma was not passed on to the workers if they did not complete an internship with the lifeguard company. the manager confirmed that the training includes two months of paid internship work and if the interested party does not complete this, the diploma is not issued. police sources allege that the training has not been carried out by an official body and therefore estimate that the company has defrauded the urbanizations by providing workers who do not have a work permit in Spain and who are not properly trained. the lifeguards themselves told police that they were working from monday to Sunday without a rest day and were being paid just €5.50 an hour. the shifts were ten hours long and if someone was absent due to illness or for any other reason, the corresponding amount was deducted from their salary, according to the police investigation. According to the data provided by the lifeguards to the police, they were housed by the company in rented apartments and in an overcrowded situation, between seven and eleven people per house. each of the lifeguards paid 150 euros a month for accommodation.thepersonincharge of the company claims that the organisation that teaches the courses, established in 2000, is recognized by the ministry of education and Science. he also claimed that he has been working in the sector for thirty years and that there is a legal vacuum with lifeguard qualifications, insisting that he has not committed any crime regarding the training of lifeguards or the rest of the accusations put forward by police. regarding the accusation of having foreigners without residence and work permits, the manager of the company pointed out that these people work as ‘volunteers’ for the foundation and are paid daily allowances. he also maintained that it is not illegal for lifeguards to work from monday to Sunday and claims that the salary of €5.50 per hour is the norm. he said that the bulk of the lifeguards are young people between 18 and 22 years old who want to work all summer without rest to earn more money. the UCriF investigation was launched after the investigations opened in June by the Judicial police brigade following the death of child.

A mAn who thought he had his glaucoma under control has praised Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia after the optometrist’s quick-thinking actions saved him from potentially losing his sight in both eyes. douglas Addison, who had a family history of glaucoma and was first diagnosed with it 10 years ago, noticed he was losing his peripheral visionlast year- a common sign that the glaucoma is permanently damaging sight. he booked an eye test at Specsavers Ópticasand the optometrist found that his eye pressure was extremely high. they urgently referred mr Addison to hospital where they confirmed hisdiagnosis and performed a surgical procedure to stop the glaucoma getting Unfortunately, worse. helost 75% of the vision in his right eye. but mr Addison remains very grateful to the team at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia for the referral, and the surgical team who stopped him losing vision in both eyes. Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. it’s usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early. but, although any vision which has been lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered, with early diagnosis, careful monitoring and regular treatment, most people retain useful sight for life. mr Addison wants to tell his story to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye tests, not simply to see if you need glasses, but to check the health of your eyes and protect your ‘ivision.knew i had glaucoma and my father had it too, but it wasn’t causing me any issues until i noticed a loss of my peripheral vision. i went straight to Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia, as i know they offer comprehensive eye tests, and they told me that my eye pressure was really high and that i should take their referral letter to A&e straight away. ‘At the hospital they moved quickly, and i had an operation on the area behind my tear duct, called the Schlemm canal, to lower intraocular pressure. this operation will stop the glaucoma getting worse, but unfortunately there is no way to restore my sight. ‘i have lost 75% of my vision in my right eye and am left with permanently hazy vision. it’s difficult to describe, but it’s like when you’ve been in the sun and walk into a dark room and your eyes feel hazy and unfocused. i have that all the time! ‘i would say to anyone who hasn’t had their eyes tested before, or hasn’t had their eyes tested for a while, please do it. it is very, very important. Vision loss can happen to anyone, so don’t take your sight for granted. ‘i’d also like to say a big thank you to the team at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia. if their optometrist hadn’t sent me to A&e, i would be blind. While i did lose sight in one eye, i can lead a full life and am so grateful that with the operation and treatment my vision won’t get andbetweenisnormalleft41rightmmtheyandeyecheckedeyemadds:‘JuradoFranciscoStoreworse.’directorduringrAddison’stestwehispressurefoundthatwere60hginhiseyeandmmhginhiseye.Astherangeconsidered1520mmhg and anything over 25 mmhg is an indicator of glaucoma, we knew that this was serious.his vision had already been damaged and he was at high risk of losing his sight completely. We wrote him a referral letter with our findings and recommendations and told him to go straight to A&e. ‘At his follow-up appointment with us a few weeks after his first visit, we were delighted to be able to tell him that his pressure was stable and his treatment was working. We saw him again in may this year, for his routine sight test and were pleased to see that his pressure remains stable and while the peripheric vision and fields of view in the right eye have been affected, his main visual acuity is quite good. it is a pleasure to see him so well and receive his thanks for saving his sight.’ Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief of sight as in most cases it doesn’t display any symptoms and high eye pressure is only one of the parameters which indicates it is developing. one of the best ways to detect glaucoma is during a routine eye test, which includes visual health checks – that’s why it’s so important to have one regularly.Specsavers Ópticas recommendseveryone should have an eye test every two years, unless they are experiencing any problems or advised

the tomatina is back, after a threeyear hiatus the world’s biggest food fight saw thousands of visitors to bunol paint the town red. on the last Wednesday in August, the otherwise sleepy, unremarkable town, which is about 20 kilometres west of Valencia city, becomes the place where half the planet wants to be and the other half just thinks is a bit silly. After all, it’s the only town on earth which is famous for crowds hurling 130 tonnes of overripe tomatoes at each other purely for entertainment.Fortherestof the year, buñol, with its attractive mountain scenery, quaintly traditional central streets and outer urbanisations with swimming pools and cosmopolitan communities, does not typically draw in tourists by the crowd, other than passing day-trippers. Yet on tomatina day, it’s all over tV screens in Japan, the USA and Australia. it may look like unsupervised, messy mayhem, a health and safety nightmare, a criminal waste of food, accidents waiting to happen and adults acting like children until it all ends in tears. but the tomatina is, in fact, extremely tightly controlled, with stringent rules, set procedures detailed in several world languages, strict hygiene, and environmental consciousness, as well as being big business the local economy and wider industries depend upon.only tomatoes may be thrown, nothing else; all tomatoes must be hand-squashed before throwing, as hurling solid fruit can cause injury and is against the rules. no grabbing people’s t-shirts or other clothing, or ripping them, and keep well away from the lorries stuffed full of tomatoes – people on foot must give way to them when they are in motion.Chucking tomatoes outside the fenced-off zone is prohibited. the tomatina is only 77 years old.A local pageant with a small-scale parade through buñol main square was taking place on the last Wednesday in August 1945, and a group of youths tried to push through the crowds to get a better view.in doing so, they inadvertently knocked down a passerby, who took it badly and began ranting at them. the discussion became more and more heated, and the mown-down pedestrian began to get a bit violent with everyone and everything in his path, taking out his anger on whatever inanimate objects lay in front of him.A fruit and veg stall became one of the unlucky victims, as the furious man started chucking tomatoes at the lads who had bumped into him.they retaliated in kind, and soon, the whole festival crowd was at it. Just for a laugh, the same youths decided to do likewise on the same day the following year, to mark the ‘anniversary’ of the day they took a battering from the contents of a neighbour’s allotment. it started to become a public tradition, although the council banned it a few years later.naturally, the prohibition made locals even more determined to ‘celebrate’ their annual tomato fight, so participants multiplied in number the minute they were told ‘no’.

previous years, this has been as high as 8,500 or more, so it’s a real community-cohesion exercise – but were outnumbered by tourists. Around 8,000 people travelled to buñol for the salad-throwing festival, with more visitors from other parts of Spain than everForeignbefore.tourists were nearly all from elsewhere in europe, even though a huge percentage of them in the previous 74 editions have come, literally, from the ends of the earth. As well as Australia, Japan and the USA– and whose tourists are tomatina faithfuls – they come from india, Canada, South Korea, Latin American countries (méxico, bolivia and Argentina, particularly), new Zealand, and just about as far away as you can imagine from buñol.

Tomatina Time

This year’s numbers the town’s year-round population is around 10,000, and in a lean year – such as the first post-pandemic tomatina –that number swells by 80 percent on one day. it’s been known to treble or quadruple, but for safety reasons, buñol council was eventually forced to limit crowd sizes, with only 15,000 places reserved for non-residents, which means having to buy a ticket. this year, about 7,000 townspeople took part in the tomato fight – in

I am annoyed at my mom’s two friends because all they do lately is use her for babysitting. She’s had these friends for years, and they have children who are now toddlers. Mom used to go out with these women, but started volunteering to look after the babies because she loves kids. They dump their children on mom sometimes at only a moment’s notice, and head off to the bar for hours. Mom used to go with them, but now she has become their unpaid babysitter. They owe her for nappies she bought as well. Dad is not happy about it either, because he’ll come home from work, and there’s kids running about the place. Mom says she loves it though, so I don’t feel I can say anything. But what really gets to me is that her friends have stopped inviting her along to family trips out, which includes the kids. Last week I saw them at the beach, and I know they didn’t tell mom about it. The last straw for me is that one of the women has now got a puppy, and I came in one day to mom looking after Write to Sara in confidence. a p S eudonym W ill be u S ed if you WiS h. it has been a summer of struggle for the easy horse Care rescue Centre in rojales. As many of us have been enjoying some time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, there has been no such break for Sue and rod Weeding founders of the easy horse Care rescue Centre. their lifeline of volunteers have also taken their much needed breaks overrecent months but this has left rod and Sue working harder than ever to continue caring for the 120 horses, ponies and donkeys in unbearable temperatures.theyrecently accepted a new resident, a little pony rescued from Callosa del Segura after the Centre was contacted by the authorities to step in and help. the pony has special needs. most of the rescues come with medical problems which meanincreased vet and medication costs than a healthy horse. As laws tighten up easy horse Care is not permitted to rehome any of the horses or ponies, even if they are deemed healthy. they are chipped and issued a passport by a government vet to be officially registered and they remain in the care of Sue and rod. rojales town hall continues to support them. “ they have been amazing” said Sue, “ they continue to fight our corner and this year have increased the grant they have given us to 8,000€.”With this support and collaboration comes extra requirementsand the couple faces an exciting, yet challenging future: “our biggest challenge is the government wants to make us into a ‘farm’,” said Sue. “Whilst this is marvellous because of all the horses, ponies and donkeys here, the work that rod needs to do to get us the farm licence is going to be nearly impossible he is 73 years old and can’t do tall the work. We need to build a lot more installations, a lot more fencing and at the moment as we have almost no volunteers and so we are struggling to do almost everything ourselves.” the couple, who have dedicated what should have been their ‘retirement’ time to the rescue Centre are keen to push ahead with the plans despite the lack of volunteers and have already purchased many of the materials needed, thanks to the grant from the town hall. “We are delighted we are recognised by the police and authorities and are working closely with them, but we are still not in a position where we get enough in grants to pay for all thework we need to get this farm licence. the only way we can survive is through the support of people.”theCentre is relying on monetary donations and items sold in the shop, manned by volunteers, to help finance the improvements they have to make.ifyou can help in any way, contact them via their www.easyhorsecare.netwebsite

this dog as well; Dad will go mad. It’s hard seeing someone you love being used. You should say something of course, but ultimately, it’s up to your mom if she continues. Yes, her friends are using her, and that’s not right. Perhaps now there’s a dog on the scene, your Dad might put his foot down. The situation may fizzle out soon anyway, as these children should be starting school. Her friends should at least have shown gratitude in a monetary way, and absolutely should not have excluded her from family days out. Say something casually to your mom plant the seed. Point out how your Dad isn’t happy with the situation, and then leave it for a while.

Fans waiting for the hotly anticipated new series of the Great British Bake Off will be thrilled to find out the show is coming back very soon. The show will once again feature hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, as they bring all the action from theAstent.always, several amateur bakers will have their baking and pastry skills put to the test as they try to prove their worth in the kitchen. From breads to biscuits to cakes and of course showstoppers, there are some big tests in store for the group. For the upcoming series, they will return to the infamous tent after two years away because of the Covid pandemic, which put huge restrictions on filming and meant everyone had to operate in a Covid bubble.Alongside a picture of the group posing together during filming, they wrote: “In knead of some good news? Here’s a little something ... The Great British Bake Off is back on your screens on Tuesday 13th September at 8pm! Ahead#GBBO.”ofthe new series, Paul has warned the new set of amateur bakers.“You need to be very brave to do Bake Off as you have to come in front of Prue and myself and be timed,” he shared, “It takes a lot of bottle to go into that tent and bake. The timing is the hardest part to deal with.” “I will walk away if they say, ‘Please go away’ but it is incredible to watch them turn from amateurs to professionals.”

The Alcoholic drink found to lower sugar levels Type 2 diabetes means the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the insulin it does produce is not taken up by the cells. This results in high blood sugar levels because insulin is responsible for regulating them. However, there is an alternative way to tame high blood sugar levels: through your diet. With this in mind, research has found some surprisingly beneficial items. Several studies have found red wine contains properties that lower blood sugar levels. In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, these benefits extended to white wine. In order to test the influence of wine on people with diabetes, Professor Iris Shai of Ben Gurion University recruited about 225 people who already had elevated blood sugar, and they agreed to follow a Mediterranean style diet for two years.Everyone in the study was eating the same mix of foods but when it came to what to drink, some began drinking one glass of red wine per day, some began drinking one glass of white wine per day and others drank mineral water. By the end of the study, “we found that a glass of red wine with dinner can improve the cardiovascular health of people with Type 2 diabetes”, the professorProfessorsaid.Shai found that compared to people who drank mineral water with dinner, the wine drinkers - both those who drank white and red - benefited from improvements in blood sugar

Scientists are claiming in a new study that drinking two or more cups of black tea each day could lower a person’s mortality risk by up to 13 percent. The study, conducted and published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, included 498,043 participants who were aged between 40 to 69 and part of the UK biobank, a database resource that contains health information about nearly half a million people in the UK. Participants completed a baseline questionnaire between 2006 to 2010 and were examined for a median of 11.2 years. Researchers also looked at information about the individuals’ tea intake, as they self-reported how much they drank. Results of the study found that out of the participants who said that they drank tea on a regular basis, 89 percent of them consumed black tea. When compared to people who said that they didn’t drink any tea at all, participants who drank black tea had between a 9 to 13 percent lower mortality risk.Higher tea consumption, which is two cups a day or more, was also linked to a lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, andThestroke.study also noted that higher tea consumption was associated with a lower mortality risk regardless of what temperature the tea was, how much milk or sugar was in it, and genetic variations that affect one’s ability to take in caffeine. While findings suggest that tea can be part of a healthy diet, there were some limitations to the study as the portion size of each cup of tea and the caffeine strength in it was not evaluated. During a published interview one of the study’s researchers, Maki Inoue-Choi, an epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute, said: “The association between tea consumption and cardiovascular mortality may be driving the association between tea consumption and all-cause mortality.”Inoue-Choi also acknowledged that even though the findings may encourage people to have more tea, they “shouldn’t change how many cups of tea to drink every day because of these results”.

Thecontrol.effects are not huge, but physician Christopher Wilcox of Georgetown University Medical Center - who was not involved in the study - said they could be significant.Speaking to NPR about the study, he said: “One glass of alcohol per day had these admittedly modest but worthwhile benefits.” Red wine has mainly come under the spotlight for its blood sugar-lowering potential, but this research suggests its the alcohol itself that’s of benefit, said Doctor Wilcox. “Since both red and white wine were beneficial in terms of blood sugar lowering - it does seem to rather neatly and very cleverly - tie the benefit in probably to alcohol rather than wine itself.” It’s important to note that the benefits of alcohol are quickly outweighed by the risks if you exceed the recommendations. To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, both men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units a Also, week.aglass of red will never substitute “good control of blood glucose with one of the diabetic medicines”, Doctor WilcoxAccordingadded.to Diabetes.co.uk, red wine lowers blood sugars by “stopping the intestines absorbingRecently, glucose”.plentyof researchers have become very interested in the effects of red wine on weight loss and blood glucose levels.A number of studies reckon it could be beneficial. That said, drinking too much of it can cause problems (such as a build-up of fat around the liver), so everything in moderation.

The latest beauty trend to take over TikTok appears to be the brainchild of an actual dermatologist and is going viral for the right reasons. The trend originated from Dr. Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist and content creator and involves using certain types of products and active ingredients in a prescribed order to give the skin time to receive treatment and recover from it. Skin cycling involves a clear timetable and has helped beauty enthusiasts understand how often powerful products should be used, helping to avoid extreme irritation. The tag #skincycling has racked up 48.6 million views on TikTok, and Dr. Bowe’s account has over 800,000 followers looking to learn her unique method. The most shared version of skin cycling is currently Dr. Bowe’s own four night routine that she recommends for sensitive skin: exfoliate, retinoid, recover, and recover. The routine can be shortened by taking out one night of recovery for less sensitive skin, which may lead to quicker results from the active ingredients on exfoliation and retinoid nights. At the end of the three or four night cycle, you should repeat from the beginning.

What is ‘skin cycling’

Dr. Bowe came up with the concept of skin cycling after realizing that many of her patients were over-exfoliating or using harsh products too often. She said, “You can use a nourishing moisturizer twice a day, but when you try to push the workhorses (the acids, the retinoids) you can actually do more harm than good — including damaging the skin barrier, experiencing low-grade chronic inflammation, increasing free radical damage, accelerating the aging process and worsening hyperpigmentation. I started realizing, as we dove into patients’ actual routines, that we needed to build in recovery days to let the skin repair.”

Mosquitoes always find humans to bite

“Mosquitoes are breaking all of our favorite rules of how animals smell things,” said Margo Herre, a scientist at Rockefeller University and one of the lead authors of the paper. In most animals, an olfactory neuron is only responsible for detecting one type of odor. “If you’re a human and you lose a single odorant receptor, all of the neurons that express that receptor will lose the ability to smell that smell,” explained Leslie Vosshall, a professor at Rockefeller University. However, as Vosshall explained, she and her colleagues found that this is not the case in mosquitoe: “You need to work harder to break mosquitoes because getting rid of a single receptor has no effect,” says Vosshall. “Any future attempts to control mosquitoes by repellents or anything else has to take into account how unbreakable their attraction is to “Thisus.” project really started unexpectedly when we were looking at how human odor was encoded in the mosquito brain,” says Meg Younger, a professor at Boston University and one of the lead authors of the paper. Vosshall thinks that other insects may have a similar mechanism. A research group at Johns Hopkins University recently reported that fruit flies have similar co-expression of receptors in their neurons. “This may be a general strategy for insects that depend heavily on their sense of smell,” says Vosshall.

No matter what spray or ‘trick’ we might use to deter mosquitoes or try to camouflage our scent, scientists have recently dicovered that it’s likely the mosquito will find us anyway in the end. When a female mosquito is looking for a human to bite, they detect a unique cocktail of body odours that we emit into the air. These odours then stimulate receptors in the mosquitoes’ antenna. For years, scientists have tried altering and even deleting these receptors in an attempt to make humans undetectable. However, despite the best efforts of the scientific community, even after knocking out an entire family of odor-sensing receptors from the mosquito genome, mosquitoes still manage to find a way to bite us. Recently, a team of researchers published new findings indicating that mosquitoes have evolved ‘redundant fail-safes’ in their olfactory system that make sure they can always smell our scents.

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has reported that it will definitely stop issuing paper notifications for fines to all legal entities, that is, to companies, from 1 November 2022. Thus, business vehicle owners must register into theDirecciónElectrónica Vial(DEV) system. If you fail to register by this date, the administration will consider you ex officio, the legal definition being “Said of carrying out an act or procedure in which the initiative is part of the administrative body or the court: That it is carried out by virtue of the power that corresponds to them by right.”Before we go any further though, let us clarify once again that this change only affects businesses at the moment, not private vehicle owners, although you too are invited to voluntarily sign up to the DEV system to receive notifications by email. For businesses, it is essential to be registered correctly and manage the download of sanctions, especially for these legal entities; since, if it is not done, there can be serious economic problems with the fines. Thus, from the moment a notification is published through this new channel, the company has a maximum of 10 calendar days to download it. And watch out for this! If it is not downloaded within the term, it expires. If it expires, it cannot be downloaded and is considered to have been received successfully. When considered received, the deadlines to answer (10/20 days) begin to count. At this point, if you do not answer within the deadline, a non-compliance/ penalty is generated. And the penalties can be up to three times the amount of the initial communication and may proceed to seizures by the Treasury. Therefore, and to avoid headaches, it is best for companies to register with a few simple steps, give an email as well as a mobile phone, and, when we you receive any traffic notification, you will beThenotified.DirecciónElectrónica Vial(DEV) is an electronic mailbox in which you can register to receive the communications and notifications that will be sent electronically with the same legal effects as the notification on paper. From the moment of registration, which applies to companies and individuals alike, when the DGThave to send you a notification, mainly of a fine or sanction, they will only do so through this digital channel, and not through the ordinary mail, which is the norm for drivers who are not registered. The notification to this electronic mailbox is complemented with a notice to your email and, if you wish, with an SMS to your mobile phone. You provide your email and mobile when you register the DEV and you can change it at any time when modifying your subscription.Remember, registration is voluntary for individuals, but mandatory for legal entities when they wish to register or change ownership of a vehicle, and will be mandatory for all companies from November.Youcan access the DEV via the DGT electronic mailbox, at https://sede.dgt. gob.es/

Welcome to Letter M

The three years that vehicles with the letter L have been registered are also an exceptionally long period, which indicates that it will be at least 30 years before the DGT is forced to make the system change.

The first licence plates beginning with L were also delivered in September, but in 2019, so the letter will have taken exactly three years to run out, with a pandemic in between and its impact on consumption, also that of cars and motorcycles.

When will the three-letter licence plates in Spain run out? At some point, the DGT will have to devise a new registration system before arriving at the 9999 ZZZ registration that will mark the end of the current four-number, threeletter code. But until then there is still plenty of time. Since vowels are not used, there are still 12 letters to be used in the current system. They are M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y and Z. Each letter also allows the registration of 4,410,000 vehicles. Thus, almost 53 million new vehicles still need to be registered before switching systems, including motorcycles.Predicting the moment in which this will happen is quite difficult, since the sale of motor vehicles is very sensitive to the economic circumstances of the moment. While at the beginning of the century more than 1.5 million new cars were registered per year -not counting motorcycles-, the 2008 crisis sank that data and in 2012 just over 700,000 first-hand cars were sold in Spain.

The recovery in consumption raised those figures to 1.3 million new cars in 2018, but the pandemic sank the figures again, and both 2020 and 2021 ended with just over 850,000 registrations.Thiseffect can also be seen in the plates of the vehicles that circulate on our roads. While the letters B through G sold out in periods of about two years, and sometimes even less, the licence plates beginning with H took almost four full years to sell out.

The first four-number, threeletter licence plates were put into circulation in September 2000, leaving behind the provincial registration system. Since then, it has been a quick method to identify the age of a car, and they have been distributed as follows: - Registrations BBB to BZZ: September 2000 – October 2002 - Registrations CBB to CZZ: October 2002 – September 2004 - Registrations DBB to DZZ: September 2004 – May 2006 - Registrations FBB to FZZ: May 2006 – February 2008 - Registrations GBB to GZZ: February 2008 – December 2010 - Registrations HBB to HZZ: December 2010 – November 2014 - Registrations JBB to JZZ: November 2014 – June 2017 - RegistrationsKBB to KZZ: June 2017 – September 2019 - Registrations LBB to LZZ: September 2019 – September 2022

The last batch of cars for which L was the first letter are in the process of being delivered to buyers, with the LZV combination being the latest to appear. Thus, according to the forecasts and the normal rhythm of registrations, it is expected that the last LZZ plates and then the first MBB plates -vowels are not used in the registration system- will be delivered in the middle of September.

What years do number plates correspond to?

Number plate spotters are in for a special surprise, as the letter M is about to appear imminently as the first letter on Spanish plates.

Instead, we had a big-money Old Trafford signing making an instant impact and Marcus Rashford actually looking like a decent player again. Crazy.United won 3-1 and deserved it. Maybe they can push for 7th place afterYouall.know what? I think the Moysiah might have had a point. Unless Jarrod Bowen was concealing razor blades in his boot laces, there is no way on Earth that Mendy got that hurt.

I won’t repeat my view on VAR again, but it’s embarrassing the ref got called to the monitor. However, it’s even more embarrassing he then changed his mind having seen it back. Chelsea just feel like they are getting worse and worse and worse. They’ve just had the biggest transfer window in football history but you just know Tuchel will be gone before this time next season. It was hardly the most convincing way to get back on the horse having lost to Southampton in midweek and having learned how to spend a lot of money on players, Todd Boehly’s next Premier League lesson could well be on how to sack a manager.Tottenham are becoming grinders and that means they’ve got a chance of getting somewhere. A gnarly midweek draw with West Ham was followed by a fighting 2-1 win over Fulham and Big Mitro (who scored, again).

At this point, it’s probably worth making it clear I like my VAR the same way I like my 1920s movie actors - seen and not heard. Has any other Premier League weekend been so dominated by attention seeking do-gooders hiding in an office somewhere, trying to find work to do? We saw a heist on the Hammers. We had Newcastle neutered. The Gunners were gobsmacked. Spurs were stitched up. Mac Allister was properly Macked off and Lampard was luckless. All because of VAR sticking their nose in - and we still do not have universal agreement on whether it is V-A-R or VAR (like car). Until that is sorted, it should get in the bin. VAR is there to pick up on the clear and obvious error - not to referee the game a second time. And the only clear and obvious error there seems to be is allowing it in the Premier League until they can do it right. Personally, and allow me to make a serious suggestion for a moment, I’d adopt a cricket-style appeal system with immediate effect. The team that feels wronged gets ten seconds for the captain to ask for a review - if they don’t, tough. Two reviews per team, keep it if you are right and lose it if you are wrong. And there would also be a small margin for error that would be “referee’s call” - perfect for the toenail offside goals that get disallowed. And then use VAR to assess the referees and how many big mistakes they are making - get them off the field if they are making mistakes. Anyway, shall we get back to mocking the things that need to be mocked?Steven Gerrard needed something out of the visit of Man City - remember when people were worried that it was ‘unfair’ on Villa to take him considering he’d be off to Anfield at the earliest opportunity? A very, very dull start to their season means questions are n CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

being asked about Stevie G’s actual managerial ability - so stopping Erling Haaland from scoring his third hat-trick in a row and keeping him down to just one goal has to count for something. Haaland can now be talked of in the same breath as Micky Quinn - the only other Premier League striker in history to score 10 goals in his first six matches. The referee was a bit quick on the whistle after Villa had equalisedPhilippe Coutinho had the ball in the net but was flagged for offside in the build up when he might not have been. I mean, where’s VAR when you actually need it? City were not 100% on it, which is easy to say when they’ve failed to beat a Villa side that look more and more like being the next Everton (and by that I mean a ‘big’ club with no idea how to spend all that money) with each passing week. As we know, it’s one thing battering Bournemouth 9-0 and getting someone the sack. It’s a different thing scoring a retro-style last-minute winner against Newcastle. It’s another thing completely failing to beat Everton in the derby - and the 0-0 draw makes the decision to let Divock Origi leave the club look very foolish indeed. In truth, it was a terrible game of football which suited Everton down to the ground. They even had the ball in the back of the net, Conor Coady clearly answering the ‘will he celebrate against his old club?’ poser turning in Maupay’s misplaced shot (the first of many in a blue shirt, be assured). Unfortunately for Coady, VAR called him offside and Jordan Pickford reminded people why he still is England’s number one.

It was a fantastic day for our first competition of the new Spanish golf season 2022/23 which wassponsored by Danny and Sharon Collins, Danny and his son Liam both played. The day started with the traditional full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, thirtyone players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford playing in two groups with an overall winner. On arrival at La Finca we received the usual friendly greeting with everything ready and waiting the course was in absolutely perfect condition from tee boxes to the slick greens. The weather was sunny once the early cloud cover had burnt away with a temperature of 36Betweendegrees. both groups this year all first four players had high handicapping cutting scores, the winner came from group A again this year with Chris

Darling having a handicap cutting 44 points, runner up on count back was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinnesswith 40 points, third place, also with 40 points went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, group B winner was “I Love Blue” Brian Gordon with 40 points, runner upwas “Sandy” Terry Burton with 37 points andthird place on count back with “Hammer” Gary Smith went to Paul Davison with 34 points. There were sixnearest the pins three per group and a longest drive, group Ahole 5 was shared between Liam Collins, Peter Kelly, Steve Gain, Steve Burns and Sean McGuinness, hole16 “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre, hole18 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, group B hole 4 “Hammer” Gary Smith and holes 12 and 15 “l Love Blue” Brian Gordon, the Longest Drive trophy was on hole 4 and was won by Steve Gain. Best Front 9 was “Tricky” Rik

Following his ball-juggling antics against Forest, seeing Richarlison strip off after scoring what he thought was his first Spurs goal only for VAR to rule it out was fun - but that was after Harry Kane levelled Thierry Henry’s London derby goalscoring record of 43. Heung-Min Son watch reports that he was slightly less anonymous than so far this Jesseseason.Marsch is an emotional chap, we are starting to understand. In a week of hat-tricks, none were better than Ivan Toney’s for Brentford against Leeds. Something irked Leeds’ American manager, as he was sent to the stands - but he was on the touchline long enough to get the perfect view of Toney’s stunning treble. The first was the kind of spot-kick that explains why Thomas Frank says he should be picked for England even if it is only for that reason. The second, a free-kick into the top corner. The third, well if Mr Haaland himself had scored it then social media would still be recovering now - Meslier went walk about and the ball fell to Toney with the keeper way out of his goal. He still had to go past two or three, look up and then chip two defenders from distance to take advantage. If you’ve not seen it, you wasted your weekend. Wolves finally won a game of football. 13th time is a charm, they say. People get sacked for less, so Bruno Lage will be happy to have three points and some new expensive players at his disposal. Ralph Hassenhuttl will still be trying to work out how Southampton failed to Newcastlewin. drew with Crystal Palace - a goal got ruled out for something by those chaps watching the video. They were wrong, but we’ve come to accept that as we reach the end of today’s column. And, that one being chalked off had nothing on Brighton’s Mac Allister seeing his sweet-oh-so-sweet strike being scrubbed in their 5-2 win over Leicester. Had it stood, then the Argentine would have an even better hat-trick than Toney - maybe. Not one Leicester player appealed for the offside that ended up being givenmind you, they are still shell shocked at suddenly being the worst team in the league.Nottingham Forest signed 50 players in the window and Steve Cooper should have parked all of them in front of their goal after they went 2-0 up against Bournemouth. The managerless Cherries came back to win 3-2, opening the door for the board to take another cheap option and give the job to caretaker Gary O’Neil permanently. Oh, and the transfer window slammed shut because transfer windows refuse to be closed any other way. Lots of teams spent a lot of money - much of it literally thrown against the wall in the way the old saying goes. Against the European Super League but a fan of the Premier League? You might want to dig into that a little bit.

Frank felt Virgil should have seen red - he was probably right. VAR probably didn’t bother looking and just went with the global narrative that Van Dijk is still the best defender in the world and never, ever makes a mistake. On another note, is Mo Salah suffering YoPierre syndrome? Get the big contract and then disappear off the face of the Earth as a Arsenal’splayer?title challenge lasted longer than expected, to be fair. And if their opening goal had been allowed to stand - hi VAR, how are you? - then the game might have gone differently.
