A spectacular fire destroyed around 40 vehicles at a Catral scrapyard at the weekend. the fire broke out just before 7am on Sunday at a car salvage yard beside the Crevillente Catral highway, near the town of Catral itself. Fire crews received the call at 6.47am and were immediately dispatched to the scene. Firefighters spent most of Sunday at the scene working to extinguish the blaze and taking action to prevent the fire from spreading. A statement from the provincial fire department revealed that there were difficulties controlling the fire due to the “large number” of affected vehicles. initial estimates reveal that as many as 40 vehicles were destroyed in the fire. no one was injured during the incident. the company that owns the scrapyard was also at the scene, moving vehicles affected by the blaze with mechanical cranes to try to prevent more cars catching fire.

torrevieja’s famous salt industry is forecasting a bumper season, thanks to the high temperatures experienced this year. the salt company expects a yield of 550,000 tons of salt during the extraction campaign which recently commenced. the salt workers usually begin production work in August and conclude in June of the following year, leaving a month for maintenance work in July. the high temperatures have allowed the brine saturation process to speed up and the volume of salt to reach 300 grams per litre of water. the high evaporation has in turn reduced the volume of water in the wetland, reducing its average depth to one metre and fifteen centimetres, compared to over one and a half metres that the pink lake measured at the end of spring following a prolonged period of heavy rains.

the renovation works on the drinking water system are being carried out in the northern area of the city very close to Alto de la Casilla, a plant which supplies drinking water to around a quarter of the town’s total population.
the current infrastructure was in a poor state of conservation, a situation not helped by the plant’s location, since it runs under hightraffic volume areas, and at a significant depth, meaning that it is almost impossible to carry out adequate maintenance.
in the downtown area. this entire section of the sewerage network has multiple deficiencies and it was considered necessary to replace the entire sewerage network, to eliminate all existing issues and expand the hydraulic capacity of the pipeline at its final section. these works represent an investment of 158,191 euros.

As for the bank of england (boe), theirlatest quarterly inflation survey has unsurprisingly shown that UK public inflation expectations surged for the coming yearat 4.9%, with a drop to 3.2%earmarked for the 12 months following. interestingly enough, 5-year inflation expectations still remain at 3.1%, which if proven would see UK inflation remain well ahead of the boe’s target level, which remains at 2% for now. Unsurprisingly, inflation expectations are now at their highest level since the boe’s survey was first introduced back in 1999.

torrevieja’s Councillor for the environment and beaches, Antonio Vidal, reported that for the third consecutive year, Kentish plovers have once again successfully nested on La mata beach. during the current breeding season of 2022, a total of 3 pairs of Kentish plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) have nested on the dunes at the front of the municipal natural park “molino del Agua”. Vidal reported that eight young have been successfully hatched. the important nesting area was declared a ‘municipal natural Area’ in 2006. its 17 hectares contain the last remaining dunes that are preserved in torrevieja. the town hall took several measures this year to ensure the successful nesting of the Kentish plover, such as the installation of a second fence, with ropes and wooden posts, which protected the nesting area as well as information posters to inform members of the public. these birds are one of the most endangered species in the Valencian Community, and since 2021 they are listed as “endangered” in the red book of birds of Spain. its population has been reduced by more than 70% in the last 30 years as a result of the loss of its habitat, associated with the urbanisation of the coast.

recent economic data from the UK has been a bit of a mixed bag, but key inflation and employment data gave markets a lift, albeit on a temporary basis. much the same as everywhere else just now, inflation is the one that really matters, and having surpassed the key 10% threshold last month, UK inflation surprisingly dipped just below at 9.9% through August. Falling petrol prices were the main driver (sorry), and whilst the decline can be considered hardly spectacular, the drop marked the first such decline in UK inflation for more than a year. When it comes to inflation, we will all celebrate any drop at the moment.
As for the pound, well Gbp/USd had a cracking start to this week, driven by that surge in risk appetite. For a spell, the pair even moved over 1.1725. however, the pound ran into a US

I asked my friend to be my bridesmaid. I have known her for years after meeting at work. Since then, we’ve met up, and gone on holidays together. I was bridesmaid at her wedding; however, she has since divorced. To cut a long story short, I married her husband’s best friend, which makes mixing awkward as her husband was at our wedding as a guest with his plus one. After months of protestations by my friend, and me saying it didn’t matter, and I wanted her there, my friend tried to spoil my wedding and turned up in a totally different dress to the one made for her. It was the right colour, and material, so she blended in and no one said anything, but she deliberately turned up late already dressed, so that nothing could be done about it. It was obvious that she’d pulled a fast one, and my other bridesmaids consoled me on the day, but I will never forgive her. She also got drunk and made a show of herself at the reception. I haven’t said anything to her about it, I just pretended I hadn’t

On Friday, November 11, Crescendo will be performing with the RBL at the Plaza de Constitucion in Torrevieja for a Poppy Day remembrance service. Time of the event will be publicized later. In the month of December, two Crescendo and RBL concerts are planned. One will be held Friday, December 9 in the San Fulgencio Teatro while on Friday December 16, both groups will perform Christmas music together in the evening at the main plaza in Torrevieja.
