Hospital protest expected to attract large crowd of supporters

For months, members of the public, politicians and even the health workers themselves have been lamenting the problems at torrevieja hospital since its reversal in october of last year. the hospital is publicly owned but since opening its doors in 2007, had been

managed by a private company ribera Salud. the Valencian government took the decision not to extend the management contract, despite reports that the hospital was running well, had the shortest waiting lists in the region and that ribera Salud had planned to

invest heavily in the wider local health infrastructure. community action groups and facebook pages were created and many protests were held to try to convince the regional government to leave the hospital running as it was but these were ignored and in october, the running of the hospital was handed back to the Valencian government. Since then, waiting lists have spiralled and reports from within the hospital claim it is bleeding talent. many health experts have left, not able to cope with the working conditions, which escalates the problem even further.

members of the public are set to stage a large demonstration this evening ( tuesday, 27th September) in torrevieja. Under the title “For decent healthcare” `protesters will demand more doctors and nurses and professional management of this busy

health service. reports on social media claim that patients have had to wait hours on trolleys in corridors before being seen with family members taking sleeping A protest in June 2021

bags to spend the night with loved ones in hospital corridors. one patient, who waited 17 hours in a corridor before being seen, voiced concerns about patient privacy. reports in August claimed another patient waited 16 hours before being seen in A&e.

Also under scrutiny are waiting lists for procedures such as hip replacements. one patient claimed she has been waiting for a hip replacement for 163 days, despite being told by her surgeon that she would have the surgery within eight weeks. She had all the relevant pre-op tests carried out in may and is still waiting.

health unions claim that the issue is down to a lack of workers. Spokesperson for health workers union ccoo rosa Atienzar said, “in the head of hospital management, professionals must be put in place and not people whose only value is having the card of the corresponding political party.”

Several different political parties in the town are supporting the demonstration, putting decent local healthcare above party politics. the mayor of torrevieja eduardo dolon will also be in attendance, as will Joaquin

Albaladejo, member of congress in the diputación de Alicante. the protest takes place this evening, Tuesday 27th September at 7pm in Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Constitucion outside the ‘prop’ office beside the town hall.

one of the main community action groups, plataforma “Sanidad excelente”, also voiced its support for the event after being invited by organisers. the group said “the chaos due to the lack of doctors and nurses in the municipalities of the department 22 of health and especially in the hospital of torrevieja is the fundamental reason for this necessary call to action. We cannot take it any longer and the time for mobilisation has come.”

meanwhile, more and more individual stories about how patients and their families have been impacted by the hospital’s reversal to public management are surfacing on Facebook through the page “Afectados por la reversión del hospital de torrevieja”. the main concern from the public is that health cuts can kill and the regional government must do better.

Stargazing event

Vega baja Astronomy Group will be holding a public stargazing session on punta prima seafront, 200 metres south of the nautilus restaurant on the evening of tuesday 4th october from around 8pm, weather permitting. organisers said “We aim to have a couple of telescopes to show you Jupiter and Saturn, and the craters on the crescent moon. clear skies or a few scattered clouds are best for viewing. thick cloud, rain or high winds will likely scupper our plans. So use your judgement of the weather, and come and join us if you can. to give you some idea of approximate distances, the circumference of the earth at the equator is around 40 thousand kilometres, Jupiter is 590 million Km, and Saturn 1.4 billion Km away. i cannot describe the thrill of seeing such distant objects as Jupiter or Saturn for yourself.”

Business association wants to ban false negative reviews

torrevieja’s business association has called on its supporters to sign a petition calling for an end to false negative online reviews of local businesses. ApYmeco, the association of small and medium sized businesses, is calling on Google to implement more efficient filters to avoid false negative comments that only seek to do damage to local businesses.

ApYmeco said, “it is intolerable that certain comments to retail stores, professional offices, restaurants, cafeterias and other establishments are allowed on said platform without the allegedly aggrieved clients

being required to provide evidence to prove their accusations.

We demand from Google a free choice to receive reviews on our profiles and if we accept them, we demand rapid action in the face of reviews reported by businesses. We also demand that they oblige to attach the receipt of the consumption, purchase or any other evidence that proves the veracity of the comments made because otherwise it is allowing a free and anonymous speaker that people can use with the sole objective of damaging credibility and destroying a business.”

the petition says, “Freedom

of expression cannot protect insulting statements that are untrue and that can damage the reputation of professionals, even more so when data protection regulations recognize accuracy as one of the informative principles of this fundamental right. You cannot be so demanding with the data protection law, to which all these businesses are subject, and then allow people to carry out these unfounded attacks with total impunity.”

the petition, which is supported by other business associations across the Aliante province, can be singed at: https://chng.it/y4chZdr7sj

Zenia Boulevard celebrates 10 years

Zenia boulevard isn’t just famous locally, shoppers travel for miles to visit this popular commercial centre. those who have lived in the area for more than ten years will remember the excitement among the community when it was being built. it’s hard to believe that this weekend, the centre celebrated its 10th anniversary. We managed to sit down with centre manager cristina ros for an exclusive look at the last decade and to find out what’s to come at Zenia boulevard…

Costa Blanca People (CBP): How did you start working at Zenia Boulevard? What makes this shopping centre different?

cristina ros (cr): i started working at Zenia boulevard in January 2013 as marketing manager and in 2017, i took on overall responsibility for the centre, so i can practically say that i have seen Zenia boulevard grow since its inception.

i remember that first year with great affection and pride as, since its opening, Zenia boulevard has been a measure of ‘before’ and ‘after’, not only for the area but also for wider commercial offering.

the architecture of the centre, its streets and squares that simulate a small coastal town, the commercial mix and the extensive programme of events that we have had since day one, are responsible for the success that the shopping centre continues to have today with the thousands of residents and tourists who visit us every year.

CBP: How many visitors have you attracted in 10 years?

cr: Since its opening, Zenia boulevard has been growing in visitor numbers year after year. in fact, during the first

decade, it has exceeded 116 million visitors, reaching close to 14 million annual visitors in recent years. before the pandemic, and on numerous occasions exceeding 75,000 daily visitors.

CBP: What does Zenia Boulevard have to offer shoppers?

cr: Zenia boulevard is the largest shopping centre in the province of Alicante and one of the most important in our entire country.

currently, our visitors can find more than 160 stores including major brands such as Alcampo, primark, Zara, Leroy merlín, decathlon, conforama, norauto and mediamarkt, among others. in addition, exclusive brands are also present in our commercial mix thanks to stores such as Guess, Geox, Via di milano, La milla de oro, rewers and best brands.

Finally, and to offer our customers a complete shopping experience, we have a wide range of eateries with brands such as Lizarrán, 100 montaditos, burger King, Foster’s hollywood, La tagliattella, ché! Argentinean, etc. and with a varied leisure option for all audiences with bowling La Zenia, casinos del mediterráneo and Zenia park for the little ones.

CBP: What has been your biggest success at Zenia Boulevard in the last 10 years?

cr: the success of Zenia boulevard is thanks to the team that makes it up. in that sense, the shopping centre would not have the great affluence and reputation that it has if it were not for the daily work of many people who strive to make Zenia more than a shopping centre. From the management team made up of four people, to the security, maintenance, cleaning, auxiliary,

gardening personnel...

We have been able to cope with a pandemic in which we have had to adapt weekly to the restrictions to offer our customers a safe and pleasant shopping experience. Without a doubt, this fact has meant that now, more than ever, we have a reinforced, versatile team capable of overcoming any adversity.

personally, i am left with the satisfaction of offering customers a special visit experience and seeing their happy faces enjoying a unique day at Zenia boulevard.

CBP: How have stores been recovering after covid?

cr: As of April 2022 and with the end of the restrictions (not only in our country but in the rest of europe) the centre once again recovered the visitor numbers of 2019 (and even exceeded them in some cases). For example, in may we exceeded the figures for the same month in 2019 and both July and August have been very similar or better than in pre-pandemic years, reaching one million eight hundred thousand monthly visitors.

CBP: Zenia Boulevard always seems to support community events (fundraisers, cancer awareness, Spanish classes etc). How important is this for you and for Zenia Boulevard as a company?

cr: in these ten years we have achieved that Zenia boulevard is conceived as something more than a shopping centre. We are that ‘great town square’, a multicultural space that has become a meeting point where a fusion of cultures is created.

to achieve this special combination,

active listening to our visitors, associations and institutions has been essential. Zenia boulevard has become a loudspeaker to publicize any initiative or charitable cause and we are very proud to have achieved it.

CBP: How did you celebrate the tenth anniversary?

on the occasion of our tenth anniversary, on Saturday, September 24, we had a great birthday party throughout the day. Special discounts, free breakfast and ice cream, giant omelette, batucada, dJs, and a tribute to Queen, are just some of the actions that we provided for our clients.

in addition, we are going to continue celebrating our birthday in the coming weeks since, due to adverse weather conditions, we had to postpone the “birthday of Zimbo” (our mascot) and it will take place instead during the first fortnight of october.

CBP: What else is coming this year before Christmas? How can people find out about the latest Zenia Boulevard news?

cr: the last quarter of this year is full of special events. the first weekend of october, we will have a very special market in our plaza mayor. in addition, on the 18th we will celebrate World day Against breast cancer in collaboration with the pink Ladies and of course, halloween will be the protagonist on the last weekend of the month.

in order to find out about all the activities and not miss any details, our clients can visit our website (www. zeniaboulevard.es) and consult the events section. they will also be able to see all the news through our social networks such as instagram and Facebook. in addition, at the customer Service point you can find our calendar to always have the programme of events at hand.

Guardia Civil twitter account reignites ‘paella sandwich’ controversy

paella, the jewel in the crown of Spanish gastronomy, is once again in the spotlight after Guardia civil shared a photo of the UK’s ‘paella sandwich’ on world paella day last week. the photo had originally gone viral five years ago, with Spaniards across the world horrified that their beloved national dish would be served between two slices of bread in a new attempt by british supermarket, tesco, to innovate its lunch offering.

Such is the popularity of paella, originating in Valencia, that there are a large number of variants adapted to the local ingredients of the different regions of Spain. its fame is so great that the Valencian Government has declared it an Asset of intangible cultural interest for

being “the epicentre of the Valencian gastronomic tradition, a backbone that, together with its preparation and cultural relevance of the Spanish territory, has become one of the most prestigious world brands”, according to the decree.

Guardia civil marked world paella day by resharing a photo of the tesco paella prepackaged sandwich saying, “if today is world paella day?

Well, celebrate it with one…but one of the good ones, not these things that they sell out there…”

“the ‘paella sandwich’ for some is heresy, for others it cuts the throat of good taste and could even threaten health”

said the Guardia civil, adding with irony: “We will attend to complaints”

Poppy Appeal Launch, Benidorm

- Saturday 15 October

the launch of the rbL poppy Appeal 2022 will take place in benidorm on Saturday 15 october in the presence of the mayor, and long-time supporter of the rbL, Sr toni pérez.

he will be accompanied by district chairman Jack Kemp along with Lynda Atkins, national Vice chair of the rbL and captain Stephen mcGlory, the defence Attaché in madrid.

one other regular at the head of the parade will be Wayne campbell, from the royal hospital in chelsea. he has been attending the launch for the last six or seven years and will be easily recognisable in his bright scarlet coat. Unfortunately, his colleague Skippy teasdale, now in his nineties, is unable to travel, but i know he will be alongside Wayne at the event ‘in spirit’ having supported it for many years.

no doubt Wayne will once again be the star attraction, certainly in terms of photo opportunities, so don’t be shy. We are sure that he will be delighted to oblige.

here in district north, Spain, the rbL poppy Appeal will be aiming to exceed the 2021 total of 120,000 euro, monies that will enable the Legion to continue its vital work in delivering lifelong support to Service and ex-Service personnel and their families here in Spain, through hardships, injuries and bereavements.

every euro received in Spain will be retained and used in Spain where it will make a real difference, not only

to the lives of Service men, women and veterans that live amongst us, but to their families as well, who can also experience difficulties dealing with the circumstances of a loved one who is serving or who has served.

So make your donation and wear your poppy with pride in the knowledge that you will be supporting your local Armed Forces community, past and present, who have done so and who will continue to provide an incredible service to our country.

the launch will be preceded by a short parade from calle castellon along paseo de Levante to rincon de Loix, benidorm. it gets underway at 1pm and will be led by the torrevieja pipes and

drums, along with standard bearers from across the many branches that make up Spain district north.

do go along and show your support to our veterans on the day. Your attendance will be extremely welcome.

The Royal British Legion’s work is the nation’s biggest Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. The Legion champions Remembrance and safeguards the Military Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces. New party for the coast looks for collaboration

party for independence orihuela costa (p.i.o.c) is now a fully recognised and legal political party, who will represent the residents of the orihuela costa in forthcoming elections.

the founders believe that the people of the coast have been neglected for far too long and have not been respected by the orihuela government. the party hopes that there will be the opportunity to join forces with local businesses, associations and hopefully with c.L.A.r.o, which has struggled for 16 years to make a difference but sadly, having tried twice to contest previous elections have been unsuccessful.

p.i.o.c has offered an olive branch to c.L.A.r.o to form a unique joint candidate list of people from the coast to represent the coast. however, at present c.L.A.r.o does not agree that working together will be beneficial in gaining three or more councillors to represent orihuela costa – but the door remains open.

p.i.o.c president peter houghton said: “We can only hope that c.L.A.r.o will change its mind

nearer the time of next year’s elections and join us in the battle. even though p.i.o.c and c.L.A.r.o are separate parties, independence is the only objective that makes us different, the rest of our objectives are the same.

“the next few elections will not be a referendum for independence but more about decentralisation of power towards orihuela costa, a fairer budget, A cultural centre, improved Services, infrastructure etc.

“our aims and objectives are to represent all the people of orihuela costa, a diverse multicultural community, where integration and respect is key to the future of the community and future generations. We want to address the lack of municipal services in orihuela costa.”

p.i.o.c will be organising information clinics throughout

orihuela costa in the coming months to help those wanting to know how to register on the padron and more importantly, how to register to vote.

peter added: “it’s time to put ego’s and self-objectives away and think how best can we serve orihuela costa, otherwise other parties who do not have the best interests of the coast, will benefit. this will mean another 4 years of abandonment, intransigence at the hands of orihuela.

“We continue to extend an olive branch to cLAro and its membership, let us unite and get representatives on a unique candidates list from orihuela costa. Fornow let’s forget this one word that divides us, and think of all the other objectives that we do agree on, this is what p.i.o.c wants and what orihuela costa needs; a united orihuela costa which will have a future.”

Vega Baja Garden Club

Vega baja Garden club had a very successful pre-summer meeting, which started with an interesting talk by club secretary irene, on plants that mosquitoes do not like. there are quite a lot of these, including lavender, citronella, catnip/catmint, basil, lemon balm, rosemary, marigolds, bee balm, sage, mint and peppermint, ageratum, alliums, verbena and oregano. So if you are unfortunate enough to be pestered by mosquitoes, you know what to do. this meeting was followed by the group’s summer break.

meetings resumed in September with an interesting talk by Alan on propagating citrus plants from seed. Alan showed members how to remove the tough outer coating from lemon seeds freshly removed from a lemon, and quite slippery to handle, and place them well

spaced on kitchen paper carefully folded over several times and sprayed with water so they were well damp but not dripping wet. then the little package is placed in a plastic zip-seal bag and left on a light windowsill for about 10 days. then, when carefully opened you should find most of the seeds have sprouted and can be planted in pots. the same technique works for any citrus plant. Alan also showed members how to take cuttings. obviously, it would be some years before the plants yielded fruit, but how wonderful would it be to harvest the first crop of fruit from a tree that you raised yourself from a seed or a cutting?

the group’s next meeting will be on monday 3rd october 2022 at bar trasgu, Formentera del Segura at 2pm, for 2.30pm start, to give people time to get drinks from the bar. A small charge of €2

per person applies for the use of the room. charles and Andrea have a presentation on the delights of using herbs from our gardens to enhance our culinary efforts, and, rumour has it, there will be some samples to try. Why not come and join in?

if there is anyone out there who would like to give a talk of around 30 minutes on anything garden-related. A laptop computer and projection equipment are available, and you would need to provide a memory stick with your pictures. You don’t have to be a professional, just a person with an interest in any or all things garden, who might like to tell the group about your experiences with your garden, terrace or patio. check out the Facebook page VeGA bAJA GArden cLUb, or e-mail vegabajagardenclub@gmail.com for further details.

National Police warn of ‘bicycle scam’

national police have taken to social media to warn email users about a clever scam doing the rounds. officers have seen this particular scam a lot recently so took to its twitter account to warn people, explaining that thieves are becoming increasingly adept at cloning genuine websites and convincing victims to part with their money.

the ‘bicycle scam’ sees thieves imitating the web page of sports equipment company ‘decathlon’. the scammers create a very convincing looking email, complete with logos and images, made to match decathlon’s real style and branding. in the email they claim that you have won a great Van moof S3 electric bicycle, valued at more than 2,500 euros.

to ‘get’ the prize, you have to confirm by clicking on a link within the email. it is this link that is used by the thieves to access the data of the victim:

name and surname, telephone number, address or even passwords and credit cards if they are linked to the account of a computer or mobile device.

How to avoid being scammed police say that with careful checking, you can see that there are elements that do not add up. the sender is decathl0n with the number 0 instead of the letter ‘o’ and the domain of the email address has nothing to do with the French sporting goods company. if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. if you don’t recall entering a prize raffle and get a notification about a price, it’s advisable to be wary.

GBP the latest interest rate hike from the bank of england (boe) Yesterday ( thursday) came out as expected, with another 50bps increase, taking UK rates from 1.75to 2.25% in the process.

Whilst the boe may have ultimately agreed with and delivered on market expectations, the voting pattern implied that there was a much more colourful discussion amongst the mpc members, given that 3 voted for a 75bps hike and 1 opted for just 25bps, suggesting that future meetings might be more difficult for the market to call.

the boe also updated their expectations for UK inflation, with a revised peak of 11% from 13.3% previously, set to land next month, followed by several months above 10%, before inflation is then expected to decline. interestingly enough, the newly released UK energy price guarantee is the main reason behind the boe’s downside revisions to inflation, with the boe suggesting that this package will now significantly limit further inflation rises.

What was perhaps most significant, is that the pound actually showed a modicum of strength in the immediate aftermath of the boe, with Gbp/USd moving from a new cycle low of 1.1211 to over 1.1300, despite the boe ‘only’ raising rates by 50bps. the combination of a slightly less abysmal outlook on the economy from the boe combined with the impending mini-budget from the new chancellor, may well have helped to offer support on the day. Looking ahead, the latest growth figures for the UK will dominate next week, and the pound is likely to continue to take its cues from overall market sentiment, and how that might impact

there has been a bit of a data vacuum in europe this week, leaving the single currency at the mercy of the greenback for the most part, which is dangerous in this environment.

Unfortunately, the latest S&p Global pmi for the region is released shortly after we go to print this week. however, expectations are for a continued weakness, with the key composite component expected to decline from 48.9 to around 48.2. it is likely to be a similar story for Germany, with a move from 46.9 to around 46. What we did get was the latest consumer confidence reading for the region, which deteriorated further to -28.8 from -25, which is perhaps to be expected given the challenging economic backdrop.

next week is a completely different story, with the latest German retail Sales, Unemployment and region-wide hicp inflation, which came out at 9.1% last time round, followed by overall Unemployment for the region. by Friday, we shouldtherefore have a much clearer picture of whether there has been any further decline in economic activity.

As for the euro, well as we said at the top, the single currency fell victim to the strong dollar throughout this week, with eUr/USd marking a new cycle low of 0.9808. however, by the close of play yesterday ( thursday), the single currency had rallied back to over 0.9850, reflecting a somewhat weaker greenback on the session. having slipped to a 20-month low below 1.1400 earlier in the week, the pound rallied after the boe, sending Gbp/eUr back to a 1.1500 high.

Rich to be taxed

the Spanish government has said it will slap a temporary tax on the wealthiest one percent of the population from next year to help pay for inflation relief measures.

budget minister maria Jesus montero told La Sexta television channel it is important that “we can finance the aid” put in place to support “the middle class and workers”.

to this end, the government will impose an “exceptional” tax on Spain’s “big fortunes”, she said.

the tax will last for two years and affect “no more than one percent” of the population, montero said.“When we talk about rich people, we are talking about

millionaires,” she added.

the minister did not provide details on what the tax rate would be or how much it would raise.

Spain’s leftist government in July introduced a draft bill

a surge in inflation as a result of the fallout from the war in Ukraine and the reopening of the economy after pandemicrelated lockdowns.

the annual inflation rate hit 10.4 percent in August. it has remained in double digits since June, a level not seen since the mid-1980s.

to create a temporary tax on banks and power utilities to fund measures to ease cost-ofliving pressures.Spain is battling

the government has introduced a raft of measures to help people cope with soaring prices, such as free public transport, stipends for students to stay in school and subsidised petrol. the government says the measures amount to 30 billion euros ($30 billion), or 2.3 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product.

Expat murderer to be extradited

A court in Spain has approved the extradition of one of britain’s most wanted fugitives, sought for his suspected role in the murder of a teenager in 2015. the decision will now go before the country’s cabinet for approval.

Spanish police arrested david Ungi in may in the town of coin near the southern resort of marbella on 5thmay as he signed up at a gym at a shopping centre.

british police believe Ungi, 30, was involved in the fatal shooting in 2015 in Liverpool of 18-year-old Vinny Waddington. Ungi, who left britain less than 24 hours after Waddington was killed, is also wanted by the british authorities for alleged heroin trafficking.

Spanish police carried out the operation to arrest Ungi in cooperation with britain’s national crime Agency, which had put Ungi on its most-

Mar Menor granted personhood

Spain has granted personhood to the mar menor lagoon, in order to give its threatened ecosystem better protection, the first time such a measure has been taken in europe.the initiative to grant the status to the murcia lagoon, which is one of europe’s largest salt water lagoons, was debated in parliament after campaigners collected over 500,000 signatures backing it.

it now becomes law after Spain’s Senate, the upper house of parliament, voted in favour of the proposal, with only far-right party Vox opposing it.

this will allow the rights of the lagoon to be defended in court, as though it were a person or business.

“the mar menor becomes the first european ecosystem with

its own rights after the Senate approved the bill to give it a legal identity,” the president of the Senate, Ander Gil, tweeted after the vote.

the lagoon will now be legally represented by a group of caretakers made up of local officials, scientists who work in the area and local residents.

ecologists have for years warned that the mar menor is slowly dying due to the runoff of fertilisers from nearby farms. in August 2021, millions of dead fish and crustaceans began washing up on the shores of the lagoon, which experts blamed on agricultural pollution.they argue that sea-life died due to a lack of oxygen caused by hundreds of tonnes of fertiliser nitrates leaking into the waters causing a phenomenon known

as eutrophication which collapses aquatic ecosystems. two similar catastrophic pollution events occurred in 2016 and 2019.

ecologists in october 2021 submitted a formal complaint to the eU over what they called Spain’s “continued failure” to protect the mar menor, which they warned was on the brink of “ecological collapse”.

the following month the Spanish government unveiled a 382-million-euro ($377 million) plan to regenerate the lagoon.it outlines several environmental regeneration projects to support biodiversity in and around the lagoon, including the creation of a 1.5-kilometre (one mile) buffer zone along the mar menor’s shores.

Heal yourself with the Emotion and Body Code

Lynda brettle, originally from the south-east of england, served for over 20 years with the british diplomatic Service with postings all over the world before settling in Spain in the early 2000s with her family. Since then, she has been heavily involved with the local expat community. She initially ran a small language and newcomers group before moving into more life coaching, counselling and emotional healing. She “retired” in 2021 as president of the national mental health charity Samaritans in Spain. in 2020 Lynda published her first book brains at the border (available in paperback and kindle from all Amazon marketplaces including Amazon. co.uk and Amazon.es) about the psychological and emotional impact of expatriate life around the world. With her background and experience, it’s no surprise that Lynda is at the forefront of new discoveries in the wellness sector.

Lynda is fully registered and insured as a practitioner as an international member of the complementary medical Association and certified practitioner with discover healing established by the renowned dr bradley nelson in the USA. Lynda uses dr nelson’s techniques for the rapid healing of physical imbalances as well as trapped emotions in adults, children…and even animals!

What is the treatment? there are two - the emotion code and the body

code. Using a unique blend of energy healing techniques in tandem with a practitioners’ app for the de-coding, Lynda can identify and release trapped energy in the body, heart and mind. She said, “in the current chaos that is found in many state run heath services, energy healing techniques such as these mean many of us can take back more control over our own physical and mental wellbeing.”

the technique, developed in the US only has a handful of certified practitioners in Spain (and only two who speak english, with Lynda being the only one on costa blanca). put simply, the emotion code System allows unpacking and release of emotional baggage. Lynda explained it by saying, “everything is energy including trapped emotions that can affect wellness causing anxiety, depression etc even contributing to ibS, fibromyalgia, migraine etc.”

the body code treatment goes even further and identifies physical imbalances and helps to realign and resolve discomfort. it does not diagnose or replace medical advice, but rather, enables the body to be in balance and improve its own healing ability and the effectiveness of other conventional interventions.

it is not a talking therapy or invasive treatment in any way and can be done in person or remotely via video call. Lynda uses biofeedback in form of gentle muscle testing to tap into knowledge of client’s subconscious mind. Yes or no answers allow decoding and assessment of issues. the troublesome energies are then released using healing magnets and body’s own magnetic field and the principles of ancient chinese medicine.

clients have reported feeling “lighter” after just one or two emotion

code Sessions sessions. body code clients have reported pain relief, improved mobility, disappearance of symptoms in two or three sessions. most people have hundreds of trapped emotions and complex health issues, so clearing these can take more time. each individual processes the release differently.

Lynda is currently offering an introductory rate for the costa blanca, which represents excellent value. Sessions in the USA average at $150

while in the UK, you’d find yourself paying between £70 to £90 on average.

Lynda is offering an emotion code session 30€ (up to 60 mins) or a body code session for 50€ (up to 60 mins).

Lynda is also happy to provide a free introductory 30 min session by phone or video call with no obligation. to get in touch, email lynda@expatmentors. com Workshops also available for small groups on request.

the programme of works has divided the municipality of torrevieja into several zoned sectors, anticipating that the repainting of each zone will last approximately one month, so

it is expected that in a year the entire town will be completed.

A comforting meal, full of the flavors of Africa!bobotie’s roots in South Africa date back to the 17th century. dutch traders set up camp in the area that is now cape town as a stopping point on their journeys back and forth to indonesia. the traders brought spices, cooking techniques, and recipes with them. While the specifics are a bit vague, it is thought by some that the original bobotie recipe came from indonesia and was adapted to fit the available ingredients.

today many consider bobotie to be the national dish of South Africa, and it has become popular on menus featuring South African cuisine all over

the world.

bunny chow, often referred to simply as a bunny,is a South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowedout loaf of white bread(or sometimes brown bread) filled with curry and salad. it originated among indian South Africans of durban. throughout various South African communities one can find different versions of the bunny chow, which uses only a quarter loaf of bread and depending on which part of the country you are in, is sometimes called a scambane, kota (“quarter”) or shibobo; it is a name that it shares with sphatlho, a South African dish that evolved from the bunny chow.

Century-old chocolate sells for £500

When you think of expensive, old food or drink you’d probably imagine a bottle of well-aged whisky or wine. but not normally chocolate, which expires after about three years maximum.

however, this particular tin of chocolates is still going strong and was just sold for more than £500 – despite being made during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1899.

the rowntree’s tin contains several bars of chocolate and was recently found in a box of junk in someone’s attic in Lincolnshire. it was sold at auction and was only expected to make £100 to £200, but in the end the buyer paid £440, rising to £519 with fees included.

they weren’t just interested in the aged confectionary, but because it is a historic artefact. during the boer War, Queen Victoria decided to send boxes

of chocolates to british troops and commissioned the bars to be sent to soldiers vying for control of South Africa. At the time, this was controversial, however, as the main chocolate companies were owned by Quakers, who were pacifists.

they opposed the war and did not want to be seen as profiting from the fighting, so they agreed to supply the chocolate free of charge in unbranded tins. however, Queen Victoria wanted troops to see the chocolate was of high quality, so some of the chocolate was marked and these bars are stamped with the rowntree’s name.

the tin is adorned with a picture of Queen Victoria, her insignia and the words ‘South Africa 1900’.

however, the history isn’t the only reason the chocolate sold for so much. there are quite a few of the tins in circulation, but

the reason this one was rarer and in demand is that it still contains the chocolate bars inside. it is believed to have belonged to the homeowner’s grandfather in immingham, who fought in the war and received the gift, but never ate the chocolate.

Auctioneer paul cooper, from eddisons, did not recommend anyone doing so in 2022.

“impressive as it looks, i don’t think i’d be tempted to give it a go,” he said. “experts say that chocolate actually doesn’t becomes hazardous as it ages – it just loses its flavour, texture and taste.that said, they probably did not have 122-year-old bars of the stuff in mind!

“of course, the militaria and boer War enthusiasts who are going to be bidding to add this rarity to their collections would not dream of eating such a treasure.”

When our eldest daughter got married, we paid for the wedding. We shelled out many thousands of pounds, borrowing money to give her the wedding of her dreams only for her to get divorced 18 months later. It was a difficult time during Covid lockdown, and their marriage did not survive both their unemployment, and a miscarriage. Since then, she has met someone else, and seems happy. The other day she announced that they are getting married, and that she is now pregnant. Amazingly, she expects us to pay for her second wedding, when we haven’t finished paying for the first one! When we told her we couldn’t help, things turned ugly and she is now threatening us with never seeing our grandchild. We reminded her that as she has two sisters, we have other obligations, but she has taken offence. She said because she’s been through hard times, we should take pity on her, but we have also been through hard times because of lockdown, and bereavements. My husband and

Expat drivers to protest in Madrid

britons have planned protests outside the british embassy in madrid this week as anger mounted over the failure of diplomats to reach a deal over the ban on UK driving licences in Spain.thousands of britons in Spain who did not convert their UK driving licences to Spanish versions by the deadline of december 2020 are currently not allowed to drive after post-brexit talks post down.

An extension to allow british residents to use their UK licences has expired but this does not affect tourists or hauliers.

After five months of talks, Spanish and british diplomats have failed to reach a deal.

A Facebook page called invasion of the british embassy in madrid for the driving licence has been set up to articulate the anger of those who cannot take to the road.

After angry britons said they would stage a protest last week, the british embassy issued a statement saying that it was urgently trying to reach a deal.

in response, pascal Siegmund, one of the protest organisers, wrote: “We are writing this post following the useless (british) embassy update. the embassy update didn’t satisfy any of us. We are going to go further (and) organise a protest.”

he said a demonstration would take place in madrid

explained before, we cannot be definitive about the timescale.”

british diplomats urged those who must drive to consider taking a Spanish driving test but acknowledged this may not be easy.

the embassy added: “We know that this is frustrating to hear and we don’t underestimate the impact on those of you who are affected.”

outside the british embassy and the Spanish ministry of transport.

the british embassy in Spain tweeted: “We recognise that negotiations are taking longer than anticipated and longer than either you or we want.

“We are genuinely making progress on the outstanding points but, for reasons we have

hundreds of brit expats have been stranded for months, unable to live their normal day-to-day lives such as going food shopping, visiting friends or keeping medical appointments. many feel the advice surrounding the need to change driving license from british to Spanish was unclear, with some advisers telling people to wait; meaning they missed the deadline.

there is disbelief that an 18 ear-old tourist can hire a car at the airport and drive, but residents that have been driving safely for years in Spain cannot.

I are emotionally drained after the past few years, and haven’t had a holiday since the beginning of Covid. We feel we’ve done our bit paying for her first wedding.

because she will have a big stick to wield over you any time she likes. Spanish fashion chain sees global growth

top-end high-street fashion chain Adolfo domínguez is expanding its empire outside of its home country after reporting a rise in sales abroad of nearly 30 percent in spring. between August and September, the company has so far opened eight international stores in as many weeks.

With one each in portugal, Austria, chile and Japan, and two in Australia and méxico, the brand has long been aiming to hit every continent – it already has an accessories shop in manchester, UK, and stores in central London, among other major cities worldwide.

however, it is in Japan is where Adolfo domínguez’s main presence outside of Spain is found. here the brand has been something of a trailblazer for Spanish fashion in the east Asian country – accounting for the company’s secondhighest turnover outside national territory, after méxico. With three branches opening between April and August in the Japanese cities of Kisarazu, Kitakyushuy and okayama, Adolfo domínguez now has 19 shops in the country.

Stores in Spain in the past five years have been tending to close rather than open, but some are set to be restored imminently: one of these is in Fuencarral,

madrid, with a brand-new design of premises. it will be joined by a flagship megastore at number 40 of madrid’s c/ Serrano, one of the capital’s main shopping streets, and which will open for business in october.

A new strategy in September 2021 has seen a move towards natural fibres and working with local, traditional craftspeople from within the far northwestern province of ourense, where the designer was born and where he and his family still live.

this ‘local trade’ flair will even be present in the building design when the central-madrid store opens: interior and exterior décor will include elements of natural slate, a typical material

seen in the capital region’s socalled ‘pueblos negros’ or ‘black villages’, which earned this name from the colour of their architecture, as well as handmade potter’s clay and bespoke handicrafts.

Started up by the designer of the same name in his home studio in ourense, Galicia, in 1970 – when he was just 20 years old and having spent his entire childhood in hisparents’ tailors’ workshop – the colourful, classy label remains an entirely family-run business: Adolfo and his wife elena are on the board of directors, and their threedaughters are part of the management, as well as being digital officers and creativedirectors.

Emmerdale’s milestone

hour-long special

Emmerdale has announced an hour-long Sunday episode for the soap’s 50th anniversary.ITV will air a special edition of the countryside soap on Sunday, 16thOctober to mark the milestone birthday with an action-packed series of storylines that will change the village forever.

To celebrate this huge event, Emmerdale bosses have gathered the entire cast for a birthday photo – from the Dingle dog to young stars like Amelia Flanagan and elder statesman Chris Chittell. The cast, young and older, have gathered outside the Woolpack to toast a half-century of drama in the Dales… and this birthday celebration will only be heaping more drama on the plate.

Producers have confirmed that a shock storm disaster will strike during the birthday week, while

viewers will also say goodbye to Faith Dingle over the next few months and Amelia Spencer delivers her baby.

Many more storylines will come to a head soon too: will Will Taylor and Kim Tate make it down the aisle? Can Naomi Walters clear her name over Nicola’s attack? Will Chas Dingle and Al Chapman’s affair be exposed?

Producers have ruled out a live episode for the 50th birthday because it doesn’t make practical sense for the show at this time.

“There’s a reason that viewers like the lives and that’s because they are looking for something to go wrong,” Jane Hudson.”The problem with live episodes is you are really restricted in the stories you can tell. We know that one of the things our viewers love is the stunts we pull out of the bag, and you can’t do those in a live.”

Bars and restaurants recover

Bars, cafes and restaurants have reported a full recovery in their income for the first time since before the pandemic – their turnover is now 2 percent higher than in the last ‘normal’ year, 2019. July 2022 saw a total spending of €3.77 billion in eateries, cafés, pubs, fast food chains, vending machines and all other nonretail food and drink purchases, according to research by The NPD Group.

This is the highest figure seen since before the first lockdown in mid-March 2020, which would lead to another year and a half of restrictions on opening, trading hours, customer numbers, and in some cases, complete shutdown for weeks or even months on end.

The hospitality sector was among the worst-hit industries when the pandemic struck, and this continued long after ‘freedom’ was restored to trade and public movement: Society in general, having initially been keener than ever to go out for dinner and drinks purely because they now could, eventually lost the habit of doing so when it ceased to be a part of their daily lives.

Now, customers are returning in droves, and are nearly up to levels seen in 2019, The NPD Group reveals. But some of the increase in turnover is due to price-led inflation, which has made the cost of a meal or drink more expensive.

This July saw a total of 675 million visits to bars and restaurants, an increase of 19 percent on the same month

in 2021, although this is still 5 percent lower than in July 2019.

Head of The NPD Group’s Food service, Edurne Uranga, recalls that eating out and drinking out, whether going for a coffee or for late-night alcohol, is ‘a very deeprooted habit’ in Spanish culture –something that has always been helped by consistently affordable prices in the hospitality sector, long months of pleasant, sunny weather and short, mild winters in most of the country.

Clearly, this habit was hard to break when Covid reached Spain, but as Sra Uranga says: “Once the restrictions were lifted, we’ve seen evidence that the desire to get back to this way of life has been greater than the growing uncertainty in our lives.”

In the first seven months of 2022 – the most recent figures available – people living in Spain spent 37 percent more on food-

related services than they had in the same period in 2021, parting within region of €21.22bn.

The ‘trade-down’ effect of the last three of those months –where consumers tend to go out just as often as before but seek cheaper options or order less –coupled with rising prices are the two factors that have held back a complete return to normality based upon 2019, slightly reducing growth in the industry and increasing the differential between number of visits and money spent, or earned, Sra Uranga explains.

But the outlook remains highly optimistic – bars and restaurants fearing for their future for the best part of two years and worries about rising unemployment in parts of the country where the catering sector provides a significant percentage of jobs, are gradually being left behind.

Bilingual people can change personality

According to studies, the personalities of bilingual people can change depending on the language they are speaking.

Bilingual people think differently than those who just use their native language, because speaking two languages physically alters the way we perceive the world.

According to research by Lancaster University linguist and English language professor Panos Athanasopoulos, bilinguals think and act differently depending on the linguistic environment they are operating in.

The research has demonstrated that bilingual speakers have an edge over single language speakers because they can flip between the two different mental states with more flexibility.

According to Professor Athanasopoulos’ study of bilingual individuals who are able to speak both English and German, participants exhibited two distinct mental models and behavioral patterns depending on which language they were speaking at the time.

Professor Athanasopoulos said: “Our research looked at people who can speak both

English and German, and showed that bilinguals think and behave like two different people, depending on the language they are using.

“We found that speaking different languages affected people’s memory of events, and impacted on the way they would carry out simple tasks.

“Our findings show that if you asked someone a question in English, and then repeated the same question in German, it’s very likely they would give completely different answers.”

In order to conduct the study, bilingual participants were shown video clips of people performing commonplace behaviors, such as leaving a supermarket and getting into a car, and were asked to report what they observed.

When speaking English

the participants zoomed in and focused on specific actions, describing the clip as a ‘woman is walking’. Whereas when speaking German, the participants tended to zoom out and describe the complete action – they would recall the woman leaving the supermarket and getting into her car.

Professor Athanasopoulos explained: “The results show that language clearly has a big effect on what we notice and how we see the world around us, and there is no doubt that language shapes our thinking.”

The study also indicted that bilinguals’ second language constantly remains active in the background and gives them a “brain boost” since it trains their ability to transition between the two languages and think more quickly.

Amazing Treasures - 19th year of church club is a success

For the nineteenth summer running, boys and girls of all ages were invited to MAGNETS Holiday Bible Club run by Steve and Irene-Maria Campbell. Started back in 2004 in their apartment with just three sisters in attendance, the club has been open every summer since with well over 300 children in total attending. As the club grew it moved into a church building, but since the coronavirus pandemic it has been held in the Campbell’s garden, which has worked very well.

This year the theme was ‘Amazing Treasures’ with the children hearing stories from the Bible as well as having lots of fun and games, learning a memory verse, taking part in a quiz and making a craft item to take home. Each day finishes with juice and biscuits, but the final day, which everyone looks forward to, is prizegiving. Each child, and adult who is there, receives a bag with prizes appropriate to their age. As they say in MAGNETS, ‘Everyone’s a Winner!’

All the children, who ranged in age from 4 to 14, enjoyed themselves and engaged fully with all the activities. Many children return year after year but new children also come along each season. This year was no exception with several

new boys and girls who are all looking forward to coming back next year.

2023 will be a special year for MAGNETS as we will celebrate 20 years, and Steve and IreneMaria want to ensure it is a big

celebration.

The Club runs from the last week in July to the end of August and if you want more details please contact the couple by email sjmimc@yahoo.

Is it possible to prevent Alzheimer’s?

How to detect symptoms and stop its progress.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease, which slowly destroys memory and cognitive abilities. It is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

“The annual incidence of the disease in Spain is 2-4 cases per 1,000 inhabitants/year and it has been seen that the relationship between age and incidence is evident in all the epidemiological studies that have been carried out.” explained Dr. Erika Torres, head of the Advanced Neurosciences Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante.

Alzheimer’s symptoms usually develop slowly and worsen over time (forgetfulness, difficulty completing familiar tasks at home or at work, misplacing things, impaired or poor judgment about financial matters, etc.

Prevention

Clear risk factors for the disease are age, sex (slightly higher incidence in women) and genetic factors. These factors are not modifiable, however, studies in recent years have shown that there are modifiable factors on which action can be taken to work on primary prevention:

- The control of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) such as arterial hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus.

- Improvement of lifestyle: avoid the consumption of toxins (tobacco, alcohol), follow a Mediterranean diet, and perform physical activity.

- Having an adequate social network to carry out activities that allow us to interact with other people.

- Cultivate our intellectual activity: reading, learning a language, doing puzzles.

Diagnosis

When a patient comes to consultation, an adequate medical history, interview and neuropsychological examination of the patient by the specialist is essential. The basic study of complementary tests requested is an analysis and a brain imaging test.

Alzheimer’s treatments in Quirónsalud

The diagnostic-therapeutic approach to Alzheimer’s is essential to be carried out by a group of professionals who are experts in the pathology.

For this reason, Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante have a cognitive impairment program in which they offer neurological nursing consultation. A place where you can thoroughly explain in a calm way what the pathology consists of and give personalized support to the patient and family.

In addition, an essential part of this program is the neuropsychological rehabilitation of the patient, to increase the functional capacity and improve the patient’s quality of life.

New Road Markings – Green Lines

Chances are, you would not have experienced the latest change to road markings on Spain’s roads, the appearance of green lines, because they are currently only being tested on a small number of roads, but if that test proves successful, we may see them appearing more.

The DGT launched a pilot experience on two highways in Palencia in northern Spain, painting green lines on the roads alongside the traditional white lines. So, what is the significance of green lines?

The road traffic collision rate on secondary roads continues to be the great challenge for the General Directorate of Traffic. These are the roads where the highest number of deaths occurs, 75% of the fatalities of all interurban roads.

The DGT focuses its efforts on conventional roads by installing more speed cameras, increasing surveillance and control, and also improving their design.

It is with this objective that the pilot test was been launched on two roads in Palencia, the CL-613 (Palencia-Sahagún) and the CL-615 (Palencia-Guardo), which consists of painting green lines along these highways to help calm traffic.

This pilot experience has been running since 2016 after signing an agreement between the DGT and the Junta de Castilla y León. This initiative has been motivated by the good results obtained in countries such as Sweden and the Netherlands.

In Sweden and the Netherlands, it has been shown that painting these lines green causes traffic calming. They are painted inside the lane, parallel to the continuous white lines that delimit the hard shoulder. The effect it produces is a narrowing of the lane and, consequently, it leads the driver to moderate their speed.

In addition, the green lines are accompanied by vertical signs where drivers are repeatedly informed that

they are driving on a road whose speed is being specially controlled.

With this measure, the DGT wants the driver to become aware to the point that the installation of speed control systems is no longer necessary.

What types of roads do green lines run on?

For now, the pilot test has focused on these two roads in Palencia, the CL613 and CL-615. These are roads with

long straight lines, which are in good condition, with a width that varies between 3 and 3 and a half metres, with wide-radius horizontal curves, and, in general, with a low risk.

These conditions can lead to an excessive, and erroneous, sense of control on the part of the driver that leads to exceeding the established speed limits.

For the DGT, this type of improvement in road design allows, at a low cost, to

achieve very good results in terms of reducing incidents.

In 2018, 994 people lost their lives in incidents that occurred on secondary roads, with exiting the road being the incident that causes the most victims (38%), followed by frontal crashes (27%) and fronto-lateral crashes (16%). 52% of those who died on these roads were traveling in a car, 19% on a motorcycle, 8% were pedestrians, 6% were in vans and 4% were riding a bicycle.

Tips for Driving in Rain

We have looked previously at how to prepare our vehicles for the rain, now it’s time to look at what we need to do to drive safely when it’s raining.

Firstly, defog the windows. In the rain, the car windows tend to fog up due to the humidity and the difference in temperature between the outside and the inside of the car. This condensation prevents correct visibility.

The rear windows have an antifog system in all cars and the newest ones can also incorporate it in the windshield. In addition, there are also anti- fog treatments that can be applied to the glass.

If we do not have this technology, we can always defog the windscreen using ventilation: simply direct the air to the glass, selecting this position on the dial so that it comes out through the dashboard grilles. This air must always be hot (heating).

Turn on the lights. Given that visibility drops significantly in the rain, it is vital to be seen by other cars. In this way, when it rains, the DGT recommends driving with the dipped headlights activated. And in case of particularly heavy rain, the front fog lights might even be needed.

Increase the safety distance. On wet roads, grip is reduced, so the braking distance increases. Thus, the DGT recommends leaving twice the distance than usual with the vehicle in front of us to avoid impacts. You might

remember the two-second rule, always allow 2 seconds distance between you and the vehicle in front, which can be checked by counting when the vehicle in front passes a fixed point on the road and allowing at least 2 seconds before you reach the same point. It wet weather, this distance should be at least doubled, and so 4 seconds would be the minimum.

Smooth ride. In the rain, it is essential to avoid sudden manoeuvres: swerves, braking or strong acceleration should be avoided. Thus, we must brake and accelerate progressively, treating the pedal with care.

Reduce speed. The higher the speed, the greater the risk of aquaplaning, since it will be more difficult for the tyre to dislodge the water. But in general, given that grip is reduced, and braking distance is increased, the ideal thing to do in the rain is to drive slower.

In addition, a high speed favours the tunnel effect, which reduces peripheral vision, which is a dangerous combination if it is also raining since visibility is reduced.

Avoid puddles and pools of water. Asphalt does not always dislodge water correctly, in addition to the fact that if there are irregularities in the surface, puddles or pools with accumulated water can form. In these areas, the risk of aquaplaning is higher. Of course, you must be careful not to deviate into a dangerous path when avoiding puddles of water, such as

an adjoining lane, or even oncoming traffic.

If you come across a large body of water, as far as possible, the ideal is to avoid driving through it. But if there is no choice, it should be done as slowly as possible and trying to cross it with all wheels. However, if the body of water is deep, or even if you cannot be certain of the depth, do not drive through it. As little as an eggcup amount of water can damage the engine and you could become stranded in the water.

Ifyou suffer from aquaplaning, remain calm, hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands and as straight as possible, take your foot off the accelerator but try not to brake, if possible. If the car skids, try to smoothly correct the trajectory.

Overtaking in rain. If we have to overtake, it is advisable to increase the speed of the windscreen wipers to neutralise the spray effect generated by the other vehicle. Also, the DGT recommends doing the same if another vehicle overtakes us.

If you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a sudden deluge, the best thing to do is to stop the car. Extremely heavy rain can cause zero visibility from our vehicle, and also for others on the road.

You must however find a safe place to stop, ideally somewhere like a rest area or a petrol station if you are on a motorway, or find a safe location if you are on any other type of road.

Hole in One!

Local golfers were amazed on Friday when one of them got a hole in one! A group of 48 golfers had travelled to Almeria for the Sliders Annual Ryder Cup Tournament. This 3-day event sees two teams - England versus The Rest of the World –battle it out on the golf course.

This is the fifth year of the competition, organised by Tom Culshaw - and the first time the ‘England team’ has won. The first round was played at Desert Springs and the final two at Valle del Este Golf Resort. It was the first of the Valle Del Este rounds, a Texas Scramble, that Jim Tickner (brother of local business owner Alan) got a hole in one on the 12th much to his delight and the amazement of his friends. Just

to put that into context, the odds of an amateur golfer getting a hole in one on a par three ar 12,500 to 1 and according to statistics the average player will need to paly 24 years before getting a hole in one.

Unluckily for Jim, unlike of the TV, there was no top-of-the-range sports car to be award for the achievement and to add insult to injury he had to get the beers – a pint for each of the other 47 players.

Imanyo Golf Society Wyn Evans Memorial Salver, 21st September at El Plantio

The Wyn Evans Salver is one of the most popular competitions of our season. Our sponsor Judy Evans unfortunately could not make it over this year, putting that aside we had a great day’s golf with 28 players split into two groups.

Arriving at the course we found that everything was organised and ready, the course was in good condition, the weather was 30o but quite humid.

Winner of the Wyn Evans Salver came from group A, he definitely was on fire Steve Burns, with a great handicap cutting score of 41 points, runner up was Chris Darlingwith 39 points, third place on count back with Ken Waller eventually went to Dave Martin with 35 points, winner of group B again on count back with Chris Baillie was Jim Doyle with 40 points, runner up was Chris Baillie also with 40 points, third place also on count back with Sir Ronnie King went to “I Love Blue” Brian Gordon with 37 points. There were six nearest the pins, group A hole 5 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, holes 12 and 18

“Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, group B hole 6 Sir Ronnie King, hole 9 Brian Gordon, hole 15 Jim Doyle, best front nine went to Sir Ronnie King with 21 points and best back nine went to “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 20 points, the Endeavour award went to Alan Martin with 20 points and the Two’s pot was not won so carried over to our next game. The results from the semi-finals of the singles knockout were Steve Ayre beat Alan Ralph 5 & 4 and Steve Burns beat Sean McGuinness 5 & 3.

The presentation was held at Imanyo’s, many thanks to Judy Evans for sponsoring the day and thank you to Antonio and all the staff for looking after us, the football card was won by Peter Kellywith West Bromwich Albion raising another €40 for our 2022 charities.

TALES fROM THE TOP fLIGHT

Ah, international break my old friend - how are you?

Well, if you are England - not that well, right?

England did what England do in Italy and failed to win in the UEFA Nations League which means (thumbs quickly through the rulebook that has gathered a lot of dust) that they are relegated into Group B, apparently.

Does that matter? Possibly. Probably not. I don’t know. What I do know is that England kick off their World Cup campaign with only another 90 minutes of football (which no doubt has been and gone by the time you read this) in front of them. And people are panicking, I mean, they are really panicking.

It happens to all of them in the end - England managers get booed, vilified in the press and hounded out the door (or the FA knifes them in the back, or in some cases both). Admittedly, that is because almost all of them did anything worth writing home about - even Sir Alf Ramsey got sacked and you may have heard he won the World Cup 56 years ago. That said, by the time he went he and his side were very much past their sell-by-date and too much loyalty had been extended.

Gareth Southgate is the man who has taken England closest to winning something since - two penalty kicks short of winning Euro 2020 at Wembley in the summer of 2021. Yet, that counts for nothing right nowin the eyes of many - as England are worryingly out of form.

Southgate is getting booed. The knives are out in the media. The World Cup gets underway in November. It all feels very England. Actually, let’s rephrase that. It all feels very England before Gareth.

Southgate, of course, is now being held by the footballing standards he has taken the team to. Before Gareth, we were a bit of a laughing stock again - Uncle Roy had overseen us

being knocked out by Iceland and Big Sham preferred a pint of wine and a chinwag rather than managing his country. Gareth fixed all that, made the shirt “lighter” to wear and got us somewhere playing his type of football.

Of course, his type of football is not always pleasing on the eye - a lot of it is about staying in games, not getting overrun, nicking a goal or three from set-pieces and progressing deep into tournaments without setting the world alight. And it has worked. We qualify, with ease. Under Southgate we’ve got to a World Cup semi-final and the Euros final. And yet, everyone is panicking because we’ve been a bit rubbish in this Nations League thing which is (to the larger footballing nation, sorry Scotland fans) nothing more than glorified friendly football because we’re all going to qualify for the major tournaments anyway (unless you are Italy, that is).

Does losing to Italy and being relegated mean we are not going to get out of our World Cup group? Of course not. Does it mean we are going to sail through our group into the knockout stages with minimal fuss? Probably not that either. Is all this overreaction just a bit over the top? 100%.

Is Harry Maguire horrendously out of form and a bit of a liability? Yes. But he was going into last summer too, and he got into the team of the tournament by the end. Are we a little under-strength at left-back? Indeed we are, but we got to a World Cup semi-final with Ashley Young playing there for crying out loud.

Are Reece James, Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount all totally out of form? They are, but they have just over a month of working with Graham Potter to go and all that could change.

Is Kyle Walker a bit too erratic? Yes, but he is also lightning quick and that is pretty useful.

And what are the actual alternatives? Everyone says pick Tomori or Guehi or anyone other than Maguire. Surely there is some value in a player who knows what tournament football is about rather than throwing in a complete newbie who has barely

played for the team let alone in the biggest tournament in the world? Especially in a defensive position where you really should have fewer wildcard last-minute picks.

Liverpool fans will argue Trent over James all day long, but both are pretty rubbish for England and picking one over the other won’t suddenly mean we’ll lift the trophy in December.

Southgate won’t drop Sterling? Maybe - but he didn’t drop him ahead of the Euros when he was in worse form than now and he did OK, no.

Would I love to live in the perfect world where we play 4-3-3, get all the creative talent on the pitch and watch them destroy all in front of them? Definitely - but football isn’t like that. That incredible football Pep and Jurgen tend to serve up? It takes hours on the training field, intricate patterns of play, repetition, repetition and more repetition. You don’t get that when you are England managerand Southgate is right to observe that tournaments tend to get won by teams who approach them like England have approached the last two tournaments.

If Southgate is insisting on three at the back, I’d actually like him to revert a little bit more to the World Cup approach where we had three in midfield with Dele Alli in there -

no, not him as he is rubbish now but someone else. We do get a bit overrun in the middle of the park which makes Kalvin Phillips being injured very, very annoying. I just hope we don’t go all Gareth Barry in 2010 and take him if he is not ready and then pin all our hopes on him fixing the midfield.

Gareth is not the best manager in the world - we know that. Tactically, he isn’t amazing in-game - he’s not Terry Venables or even Glenn Hoddle on that score. But, he has created the best culture around the team since Venables - the players want to play for England again, which hasn’t been the case. Even the Golden Generation weren’t all committed to it, really.

Look, if England stink Qatar out Southgate is going to leave anyway. If England do well, I suspect he’ll call it a day as he is conscious of sticking around when he is no longer wanted.

England won’t win the World Cup. They were never likely to anyway. But if we can go deep into the tournament and flirt with it briefly, that will still be a massive achievement and something we will all remember.

Just get off Southgate’s back and remember the good he has done.

And, if we have beaten Germany at Wembley before you read this you’ll wonder what on Earth I am going on about…

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 20th of September we fished the 7th round of the Autmn series at the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. For some months now the river has been fishing quite badly and once again for whatever reason this was indeed the case once again.

Winner on the day and carrying on where he left off after his holidays was Richard King. Drawn on peg 2 at the bottom of the ramp he caught 7 carp on the feeder with corn for 7.86kg.

In second place was one of our Welsh raiders, Alan Davie who from end peg 11 caught several smaller carp also on the feeder with pellet or maggot for 6.70kg.

In third place on the peg next door was Alan Priest who fished the method feeder also with pellet for 6.10kg.

The other section was won by Richard “Tricky Dickie” Wood with 6.04kg. who used is unique shotgun pattern casting to winkle out several small carp.

The Autmn series is now well and truly hotting up with Graham Patterson leading the way after 7 rounds, but with several other anglers in close pursuit.

I have no details of the Rods N Reels match which took place at El Bosquet the following day.
