Protesters line the streets over hospital situation

Around 700 people gathered on tuesday evening in torrevieja to express their dissatisfaction at the service being received in torrevieja hospital and associated health centres. banners were held aloft bearing slogans such as ‘dignified health - we have rights’ and ‘come back ribera’, in reference to the company that previously managed the hospital before it reverted to the Valencian government in october of last year. other banners read ‘more doctors, less politicians’ and several called for the resignation of Ximo Puig, the president of the Valencian community.

the demonstration was organised by a group of patients and families who wanted to publicly criticise several cases of lack of care and alleged medical malpractice that they attribute to the current health management.

organisers said that during this year so far there has been a worrying succession of resignations by managers of several departments within the hospital. Most notably in A&e which had three consecutive managers resign.

to support the protest, several councillors of the PP government team, led by the

mayor eduardo dolón and the former mayor of orihuela, emilio bascuñana, were in attendance as well as former national deputy Joaquín Albaladejo.

Members of the community action group Platform for excellent health were also

present, as well as former medical directors of riberathe healthcare company that managed torrevieja’s health department for fifteen years. Workers unions and several other political parties were also in attendance.

Local Police short of officers

torrevieja’s local police force is severely short of officers, according to a report that emerged at the weekend. the official organisational chart includes 187 officers on staff, but it appears the actual staff is made up of 120 officers and 17 command officers. the recommendation of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FeMP) is that towns have two agents for every thousand inhabitants. torrevieja, whose population is close to 90,000 inhabitants although the real population throughout the year exceeds 100,000, should have at least 200 officers.

the availability and function of the 137 police officers in torrevieja is also limited, according to Juan Antonio Moya, police officer and union representative of the Workers’ commissions. of the 120 basic officers, 75 are permanent and 45 are ‘interim’ and so cannot carry a weapon or perform certain duties.

eleven of these officers are attached to the central service in the attention and coordination of calls and alerts received from residents and other police and emergency bodies. Another 17 are linked to administrative work in offices,

and 12, due to age or illness, are often assigned to surveillance and access control duties at municipal buildings. in total, of the 120 officers, only 87 are, distributed in three daily shifts, on active duty on the street.

Police union forecasts are not encouraging and suggest

Government Subdelegation. the town hall also looked into the possibility of adding extra officers on secondment, although so far no officer has joined the torrevieja ranks in this way. they also tried interim employment exchanges with other municipalities such as benidorm, orihuela, San Fulgencio and benijófar. there were applicants, but success was limited.

now the most solid initiative is a recruitment drive to fill ten permanent officer positions and six higher ranking positions. it is hoped that the applications will allow the town hall to provide the local police with a job bank of sorts. More than 600 applications were received for the ten basic officer positions.

that 15 police officers could be leaving the force at the end of the year, including those who would be ready to retire and those who are due to transfer to other locations within the province.

councillor for Security, Federico Alarcón, and councillor for contracting, carmen Gómez have been working to try to improve the situation. For example, there was a slight salary increase, despite the move being appealed by the

ritics consider that managing vacancies through a job bank is only a temporary ‘patch’ solution to a bigger problem, with an increasingly ageing and reduced workforce with many inexperienced agents, who cannot carry weapons. Local government has had more success when it comes to awarding contracts to renew the material available to the workforce, including digital communications, mobile radar, a new fleet of vehicles, personal protection such as bulletproof vests and uniforms.

Naked protest for Cala Mosca

Around 80 naked protesters from several different countries gathered on the orihuela costa to draw attention to the situation at cala Mosca, the last undeveloped stretch of orihuela coastline. the construction of 2200 homes is planned for the site. Action group ‘Save cala Mosca Association’ has been fighting for many years to save the stretch of land and organised the ‘naked protest’ at the weekend to highlight the issue. the protest took place in Punta Prima, more or less at the border between orihuela and torrevieja.

As part of the protest, there was a piece of performance art directed by Pablo rubio Gil orozco and involving the 80 naked protesters, entitled ‘everything is a reflection of something’.

in early September, the orihuela city council announced a negotiation table with political groups, the construction company and the Generalitat to offer alternatives to the construction of cala Mosca. the ‘Save cala Mosca’ association and local environmental

groups have requested to be part of the ongoing dialogue, so far without having received a response from the local administration.

the developer is believed to have asked orihuela mayor, carolina Gracia, to be more specific in what the discussion table means and how she will participate. Meanwhile, Gracia sent them another letter in which she apparently said she is aware of “the legal situation in which the administrative procedure finds itself”, and clarifies that

the discussion table “is not a decisionmaking body, but rather a space to study the possibilities to preserve “cala Mosca’’ in whole or in part. She said “we ask for your assistance, being essential so that the definitive action proposal has an absolute degree of consensus among all the affected parties.”

it was the Ministry of transport that issued an unfavourable -and bindingreport against the project. the parties called to dialogue have a deadline of 9th october to respond.

14-year-old stabbed in Murcia school incident

A 14-year-old was injured on Monday morning when he was stabbed at school, allegedly by a classmate of the same age, according to police sources.

the incident took place around half past nine in the morning, a time at which the emergency services received several calls indicating that a minor needed urgent medical help, claiming he had been stabbed by another young man. the location of the incident, the Alfonso escámez Secondary education institute, is in the coastal town of Águilas.

According to witnesses, one of the minors attacked the other from behind, after which the alleged attacker fled the scene. An ambulance was dispatched to the school to treat the injured teen. Fortunately, according to health sources, the knife did not reach any vital organs and the child’s life is not in danger. Sources also confirmed he did not lose consciousness after the attack.

Given that the suspect has been fully identified by the victim and eyewitnesses,

Security Forces at the time of going to press were in pursuit, hoping to detain him and make him available to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s office, since he is also a minor. he would likely face a bodily injury charge.

it is not the first time that knife crime has been seen at schools in the Murcia region. in February of this year, a 13-year-old minor, a student at the Monteagudo school in Murcia, stabbed a teacher, who had to be transferred to a health centre,

although his condition was not serious. in 2019, there was a stabbing incident in a torrevieja secondary school where a then 18-year-old student stabbed a fellow classmate for insulting the prophet Muhammad and blaspheming the islamic faith. the student was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay €11,000 in compensation to the victim. he was also ordered not to go within 300 metres of the victim or contact him in any way.

there will be a wide range of authentic crafts: from ceramics in different styles to lamps made of pumpkins; from fairies and elves to soaps and natural cosmetics; from leather bags to design jewellery, in materials as different as silver, glass, macramé, sea shells and ceramics. the arts are represented by three painters of very different styles, the sculptor and an artist specializing in mosaics.

For the youngest visitors, there are stalls with juggling toys or hobby horses (real ones!) and they can play board games, have a ride on the merry-goround or participate in the workshops to make their own little piece of art and take it home.

on Friday and Saturday afternoon the enrique Simón trio, a group of

New fish market in Torrevieja Port to open this week

the president of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig plans to visit torreiveja on Wednesday october 5th to visit the facilities of the new fish market in the Port of torrevieja the day before it opens on the 6th. on thursday, the fishing fleet based in the torrevieja bay will begin to unload their catches for auction in the new facilities.

both the construction of the new fish market and the adaptation of the customs building are part of the improvements required by the regional administration as part of the major project to transform the port space into a new leisure area, with a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and restaurants. , in addition to an underground car park with a capacity for 600 vehicles.

the new fish market and the adaptation of customs - which also includes the demolition of the old port buildings - have cost in the region of 4 million euros.

the new fish market presents, in

addition to the space to carry out the daily fish auction, an office space for the fisherman’s guild, storage premises, the el isla restaurant, parking and an access roundabout. After the new fish market is up and running, the old one will be demolished to make way for the new leisure facilities.

Four arrested for suspected gang rape in Torrevieja

Guardia civil have arrested four young tourists for the alleged gang rape of another tourist in torrevieja. the three alleged perpetrators and a fourth individual are on holiday from France and were tracked down by investigators in just over 24 hours.

two 19-year-olds and one 22-yearold remain in preventive detention as alleged perpetrators of the incident, which was reported by an 18-year-old Scandinavian tourist on September 8. the three alleged rapists, as well as a 30-year-old friend who was in the apartment where the alleged assault occurred but did not participate - nor did he help the young woman - were tracked down and arrested in just over twentyfour hours after an intense againstthe-clock investigation by police. officers were keen to apprehend the alleged perpetrators before they could flee Spain.

According to police sources, the victim went out to dinner with a friend and visited the Marina Salinas leisure area in torrevieja port.

At one point in the night, the young woman was left alone in a pub because her friend had gone home. When she was on her way back to her apartment she was approached by one of the suspects. he struck up a conversation with her and they walked until they came to the apartment where the man was staying on holiday.

After going up to the apartment, it

is alleged that three of the four men present sexually assaulted her one after another. After the ordeal, the young woman, who had lost her bag with her mobile phone before her alleged attack, went out into the street and began asking for help. Some passersby helped her get to the Guardia civil barracks and an urgent investigation

she did offer a clue that allowed investigators to identify the suspects. the girl told officers that she had heard her attackers talking about practising water sports. officers went to the leisure area where the victim had been in order to collect cct V and reconstruct the route followed by the young woman. in the vicinity, they verified that there was an establishment offering the rental of jet skis. officers met with the person in charge and confirmed that four people had been there who could be the suspects they were looking for.

After being identified, officers began to search hotels and tourist accommodation in search of the suspects and by lunchtime, they were located and arrested while eating at a restaurant in torrevieja.

was immediately launched. the victim, described by Guardia civil as being of ‘nordic’ origin, and the men arrested, residents of France, were reportedly on vacation in torrevieja. once Guardia civil were notified of the alleged incident, the girl was taken to the hospital to be treated and for experts to collect samples that will later serve as evidence. the victim provided descriptions of the men but could not provide any phone number or address. however,

Guardia civial revealed that thanks to the victim’s decision to report the incident immediately, the work of officers to identify the perpetrators and collect the numerous pieces of evidence necessary to prove the alleged gang rape was greatly helped.

the court number 1 in torrevieja decreed the admission to prison of the three alleged perpetrators of the rape and the fourth man, standing accused as an accomplice, was released with charges and with precautionary measures prohibiting him from leaving the country and the obligation to appear before a judge every 15 days.

Local train links welcomed

the Mayor of orihuela, carolina Gracia has said: “Ximo Puig’s announcement about the orihuelatorrevieja rail connection and the improvements in infrastructureacross the Vega baja is extraordinary news” the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, recently announced that the Valencian Government will carry out a study to improve railway links in Vega baja, with a connection between orihuela and torrevieja by tram and another line that will run from torrevieja to the Alicante-elche airport. this follows wider regional news that the high-speed rail link from Valencia to Sevilla with connections to Alicante and Malaga is to restart. eastern and southern cities will soon be connected by highspeed rail now that the express AVe service is due to restart

between Sevilla and Valencia, with one return journey every day.

From Valencia, the train will call at cuenca and Puertollano (ciudad real province), both in castilla-La Mancha, and at the inland city of córdoba in northern Andalucía. this will allow for AVe connections from córdoba to Málaga and cádiz, long-distance trains from Sevilla to cádiz, from córdoba to Granada, and from Alicante to córdoba and Sevilla via the interchange in cuenca.

connecting trains will involve just one travel ticket – such as from Valencia to Málaga or Alicante to cádiz – even though the trip will not be direct.

despite having to change trains, the service will still be much faster than driving in most cases, and far less tortuous than at present, where passengers often have to travel some

distance out of their way to get to their final destination.

trains will leave from Valencia’s AVe station, Joaquín Sorolla – accessible by free shuttle-bus from the city’s main estació nord – at 09.00, and the return train to Valencia will leave Sevilla’s Santa Justa station at 6.15pm. the entire journey will take just four hours.

córdoba and Valencia will be three hours and 20 minutes apart, with the córdoba train leaving for Valencia every day at 7pm, and the Valencia-Sevilla line reaching córdoba from the east coast at 12.24pm.

From cuenca, passengers can then get an AVe train to Albacete or Alicante.Sevilla to Alicante will take a total of five hours and 26 minutes.

According to rail board renFe, the Valencia-Sevilla AVe link will be runningonce again from Friday (7th october).

Woman arrested for driving down the motorway in the wrong direction

An elderly woman has been arrested by police in Algorfa after she was found to have driven around ten kilometres in the wrong direction down the AP-7 motorway.

officers said that the driver, who ended up being arrested and charged by Algorfa Local Police, drove for at least 10 kilometres in the opposite direction on the AP-7 motorway.

A concerned citizen called the police to report the matter and at the time, Algorfa local police had a squad car in La Finca de Algorfa, near the motorway. reports indicate that several vehicles had to carry out evasive manoeuvres to avoid being hit. officers sped to the motorway, leaving the squad car at the central median and walking across the opposite lane in order to flag down the driver on her approach.

one officer stopped the vehicles that were travelling in the correct direction while the other agent stood in the centre of the motorway and began to try to force the vehicle to stop. however, he had to jump out of the way because the driver

wouldn’t slow down. eventually, she did stop (after reaching the other officer who had stopped oncoming traffic). After removing the vehicle from the road officers gradually restored traffic flow to avoid danger to other road users. officers reported that the elderly lady was disorientated and were later able to verify that she suffers from a condition that means she

carried out when people renew their driving licences. he suggested that tighter controls and the detection of mental conditions that are incompatible with driving could mean more appropriate temporary suspension of the licences of people who simply should not be behind the wheel.

should not be driving.

Algorfa police hQ have confirmed that due to the quick action of the two officers, an inevitable tragedy was avoided. both have been recommended for a public commendation.

Algorfa chief inspector Pedro J. bertomeu García was quoted as wondering if these sorts of incidents with drivers, who should not be behind the wheel, are on the increase because of a lack of control in the ‘psychomotor’ test routinely

the chief inspector said, “Perhaps it should make us assess the need to establish more effective controls regarding the psychophysical conditions required of drivers, especially after reaching a certain age, or suffering some diseases that reduce driving conditions, increasing the risk for drivers and road users.”

he also revealed that recently, Algorfa Local Police had proposed the withdrawal of driving licences from six citizens, of varying nationalities, after having a series of accidents clearly caused by lack of mobility, serious chronic illnesses or their treatments, and even in some cases, before a clear physical decline that made it impossible for the driver to operate the vehicle controls.

the new initiative was announced by the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, during the general policy debate in Parliament, where he stated that 1,553,000 Valencians will benefit from this new scheme.

Puig indicated that this measure represents a saving of 135 euros per young person.

With this measure, the Valencian Government says it seeks to “help families against inflation” and has indicated that “it will benefit students and younger workers”.

Puig also indicated that the Generalitat will put out to tender two studies to create a tram from the aiport to torrevieja and from torrevieja to orihuela.

People under 30 years of age from the Valencian community who want to benefit from this initiative and travel for free on public transport must apply for a new card that will be launched soon. the department of territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility

has not confirmed the date of the launch yet, but has indicated that both the Alicante trAM and the Metrovalencia will enable a prior appointment service, in anticipation of the high demand for these free passes, which will be accessible in the coming days through their websites.

Applicants who want to travel for free on the tram, bus and metro will have to have this new temporary card, regardless of whether they have another type of travel pass. the free pass can only be requested by presenting official id with which to prove the applicant’s age.

Torrevieja Animal Protection installs cat shelters

torrevieja’s department of Animal Protection is set to install a series of shelters to protect ‘street cat’ colonies in the area.

A total of 28 shelter-type huts for the various feline colonies that live on the streets of the town will be distributed in the areas where the colonies are located.

this initiative aims to improve the hygiene and protection of street cat colonies within a project

that includes, in addition to the town hall itself, the associations “Alma de Gato”, “ceS Project” and “ Animalists torrevieja”.

this initiative is part of the development of the program of capture, sterilisation, release and return of animals. the installation of these 28 booths will also improve the appearance of the areas where the colonies gather and will facilitate their feeding, health control and the general management of stray cats, with the aim also of guaranteeing their well-being and population control.

the past week has been something of a rollercoaster ride for UK asset prices, the pound, the government and bank of england (boe). it all started fairly calmly enough last thursday, after the boe announced an expected 50bps UK rate hike, and plans to begin the process of reducing their bulging balance sheet with an orderly selling of UK gilts (Qt).the next day, the government announced in their minibudget, anattempt to spur economic growth with aggressivetax cuts and massive borrowing plans, deliberately aimed at the top-end of the pay scale in order to generate a ‘trickle-down’effect. the rest, as they say, is history, and has been colourfully documented around the world.

As we (and just about everyone else) have highlighted throughout this week, the measures from the government look like doing more harm than good for the UK economy.indeed, the good people at the iMF said that if nothing else, the measuresproposed by the government could rapidly increase UK inflation, at a time when central banks were actively trying to reduce it.

Markets quickly arrived at the same conclusion, and the pound and UK gilts came under intense selling pressure from the get-go on Monday. the yield on the UK 30-year gilt surged to around 5%, and GbP/ USd dropped to its lowest level on recordofaround 1.0300, albeit in thatparticularly thin and choppy Asian Monday morning session.

With serious risks to both the UK pensionand property markets, as well as the potential of a catastrophic impact to the broader economy, the boe had little choice but to intervene, announcing plans to ditch their planned Qt sales and instead start buying the long-end in clips of £5bn per day for 13 weekdays, with a package totalling around £65bn.the news sparked a spectacular reversal for gilt yields, which fell over 100bps on the day, which is a record for a single daily move. Although yields have moved slightly higher since, the presence of the boe has ensured that those rises have been far more orderly. the boe did the right thing by leaving sterling to the markets.

Going forward, markets still expect a very hefty rate rise from the boe at their next meeting, and there remains much doubt as to whether the government’s programme will/canwork, and whether the boe’s intervention attempts will only delay the inevitable selling pressures down the line. clearly, incoming UK economic data will be closely scrutinized by markets.

in the meantime, the government have stood firmly behind their proposals, and the pound has since found some worthy support, with GbP/USd trading back over 1.1200 for a spell by this (Friday) morning, and GbP/eUr dancing its way back over 1.1375, having been under 1.0800 for a spell on Monday morning. these numbers look like ‘normal’ monthly ranges. Perhaps more tellingly, the latest opinion polls are now giving Labour an historic 33-point lead over the tories, with Liz truss is coming under mounting pressure from all sides to revise her plans. interestingly enough, the latest UK growth figures have just been released this morning, and there was a pleasant upside surprise, with GdPincreasing by 0.2% (QoQ/Q2), against an expected drop of about the same level.

EURO

the risk of a recession in Germany appears to be accelerating, withinflation having just risen to a 70year high. German inflation reached double-digit levels for the first time since the 1950’s, with cPi tapping 10.9% (YoY) through September. the jump was perhaps no surprise, given that the range of government measures to limit prices on specific public services expired last month.

however, the impact of surging inflation in Germany is likely to push region-wide inflation to anew record level around 9.7%, when those figures are released later today (Friday). the news comes as Germany responded to the soaring rise in energy costs by announcing plans for a eUr 200bn cap on gas prices, which the chancellor describes as a ‘defensive shield’.

Germany issatisfied that gas supplies will not run dry through this year and next, but the supply situation remains extremely tight, and the risk remains that were the country forced to ration supplies, there will be a dramatic impact on GdP through next year.

Given that inflation in the region continues to probe higher, the calls for another 75bps rate hike from the ecb at their next meeting have been increasing, with several key ecb members openly calling for an aggressive move again next month.

As for the single currency, well it has been a tale of two halves this week, with eUr/USd touching a new cycle low at 0.9535 on Wednesday before making a strong two-day recovery back toward 0.9800, rallying sharply alongside the other dollar crosses. region-wide retail Sales ( thurs) are probably the pick of the bunch into next week, as well as a slew of PMi readings.

Tax cut for lowincome earners

Spain’s government has said it will cut the income tax on lower-income households to help hard-hit consumers grapple with soaring inflation. the government will reduce the income tax on people earning up to 21,000 euros per year, or one in two workers, budget Minister Maria Jesus Montero told a news conference.

At the same time, she confirmed the government will slap a new tax in 2023 and 2024 on residents whose wealth exceeds three million euros to help pay for inflation relief measures.

this so-called “solidarity” tax will affect some 23,000 people, or 0.1 percent of taxpayers, and raise 1.5 billion euros for state coffers over the two years, she added.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government announced last week that it would create a temporary tax on the wealthiest population without giving details.

“Since we began governing, we have been working to make our fiscal system more progressive, efficient and strong enough to support social justice,” Montero said thursday.

the announcement of the tax changes comes as Spain is gearing up for local elections in May 2023 and a general election expected at the end of next year.

Spain is battling a surge in inflation as a result of the fallout from the war in Ukraine and the reopening of the economy after pandemic-related lockdowns.

the country’s inflation rate eased to 9.0 percent in September as energy prices fell, down from 10.5 percent in August, but remains high.

Prime Minister Sanchez has in recent months rolled out aid packages to help households and businesses weather the inflationary pressure, which has soared across europe due to the Ukraine war.

it has introduced free public transport, subsidised petrol prices and temporarily slashed the sales tax on gas among other measures, in moves that are expected to cost some 30 billion euros — or 2.3 percent of Spain’s gross domestic product.

Water costs could double in the Alicante province

reports this week indicate that the cost of water in the Alicante province could double. A report claims that costs are skyrocketing due to the increase in energy prices and the related lack of action from state company Acuamed to find cheaper energy solutions. Sources in the sector warn that the cost of desalinated water, which is over €1.20 at plant level - from then on it has to be transported at an added cost - a rate which has doubled in the last twelve months. Several municipalities in the Alicante province accuse Acuamed of buying electricity at too high a price. this, together with the reduction in water transfers and the increase in the

use of desalinated water, form a deadly combination for local towns, which have to assume the price increases and then transfer them to the end user. the uncontrolled increase in the price of electricity in Spain - the cost per megawatt/hour exceeds 300 euros almost every day - threatens water supply towns in the province of Alicante whose supply is already largely based on desalinated water due to cutbacks in the tajo-Segura water transfer. desalination allows a guarantee of water supply but is very expensive, as shown by the fact that the cost of producing a cubic metre of desalinated water has doubled in the last twelve

months, rising from 0.60 euros/ m3 a year ago to 1.2 euros/m3 this week.

According to industry experts, the situation is worrying and not only for supply, but also for industry, which also uses desalinated water, since energy costs represent 70% of the total cost of producing a cubic metre of desalinated water.

those same experts this week claimed that the seemingly unstoppable increase in electricity prices is going to have a domino effect on the cost of water in all municipalities, both those that use desalinated water and those that are supplied by transfer from rivers and reservoirs.

I am an older gent, divorced for a number of years. I have been seeing a nice lady for dates. I didn’t feel there was anything romantically between us, but we are friends get on well, share the same sense of humour and have the same interests. We see each other about twice a month, and message each other most days. Recently she told me she’d been asked out by another man, and I was a bit taken aback. I still don’t know whether I feel we are boyfriend and girlfriend material, however I didn’t expect that. It provoked feelings of jealousy in me that I didn’t know I felt; it has made me question the relationship. I have always had an inclination that she would like more from our relationship, although I have always said I would prefer us to be just good friends.

I wonder if your feelings have changed? If you initially did not have any romantic inclinations for this woman, then where is the harm in her seeing other men, or for that matter, you seeing other women? However, you had

clearly hoped she would remain loyal to you, even though you are not a couple. Dating when we are older can be a different thing entirely. When we are young, we move on very quickly if we are not attracted to someone, but as older

people we can find value in friendship and companionship. Does your annoyance in this lady-friend seeing another man mean that perhaps you did view your relationship as one of more than friends? Have a think and have a chat with her.

Outdoor drug lab was making 120kg a week

Spanish police have arrested 12 people after raiding a cocaine laboratory near Madrid that mirrored the clandestine outdoor labs found in the jungles of South America and which had the capacity to produce 120kg of the drug each week.

the lab, the first of its kind discovered in Spain, was stormed by officers from the Policía nacional’s special operation group, who found five “cooks” at work when they burst in.

the operation, which included searches of 10 properties in Madrid, Málaga and córdoba, led to the seizure of 85kg of cocaine base paste, 250kg of cocaine-impregnated cement, six vehicles, a pistol and €36,000 (£32,000).

in a statement, police said the raids, carried out at the beginning of September, revealed a surprising set-up.

“this operation used a way of recovering the cocaine that laboratory-dismantling experts had never seen before in this country, and which resembles what you see in the South American jungle,” it said.

“these laboratories normally tend to be set up inside houses or on industrial units to escape the attention of neighbours and the police. but this laboratory

was in the grounds of huge farm and was only protected by shades and tarpaulins that had been put up to try to hide its activities from aerial view.”

According to the statement, the Spanish citizen alleged to be the leader of the gang oversaw a business importing sacks of cement whose contents were laced with the cocaine that was then extracted at the farm near Madrid using a carefully hoarded supply of chemicals.

the lab was run bya person from the dominican republic, who organise the distribution of the cocaine. he, in turn, recruited three colombians who came

to Spain to retrieve the cocaine from the cement.

“these people, known as ‘cooks’, are usually hired for a specific operation and charge according to the number of kilos extracted before returning to their home country,” the statement added.

Police said the operation also reflected the deep knowledge of the “cooks”. rather than using large quantities of chemicals that are subject to international stringent international checks, they only used petrol, ammonia and water to recover the cocaine. A drone was also used to guard the lab.

“How can I copy files from an old laptop to a new laptop?”

You have two simple options. You could use cloud Storage. install the same cloud Storage on both devices. Use File explorer to copy or Move files to cloud Storage. on completion, both laptops now have access to the same files.

Another way would be to use a USb storage device (Pen drive or external hard drive). copy files to the storage device. connect the storage device to the second laptop and copy files to the hard drive of this laptop.

“Do I need to install Antivirus software on my Smartphone?”

Many of our computing tasks have shifted from desktop systems to phones or tablets.

in most cases,on Android smartphones and tablets you do not need to install the antivirus. however, it is equally valid that Android viruses exist and the antivirus with useful features can add an extra layer of security.

i would always recommend running regular software and security updates. For optimal device security, antivirus protection is by far the best option.

For iPhones, viruses aren’t a major threat. but no device or operating system is completely secure by default. Just like with any other device, there are other security threats than viruses. Phishing, altered advertising, unsafe Wi-Fi networks and data breaches are security threats.

Royal Mint to issues King Charles III coin

coins featuring a portrait of King charles iii will gradually enter circulation from december.the royal Mint says his image will appear on 50p coins first - and in keeping with tradition, the King’sportrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to the Queen.A commemorative £5 coin has also been created that features two new portraits of the late monarch on the back.

nicola howell, chief commercial officer at the royal Mint, said King charles worked closely with sculptor Martin Jennings - and personally approved the effigy.this was “to make sure there was a seamless empathetic way to end her majesty’s reign and to actually signal the new reign of a new king”.

the Latin inscription surrounding the effigy translates as: “King charles iii, by the Grace of God, defender of the Faith.”

the effigy could be viewed as softer and less regal than those of previous monarchs.

chris barker, from the royal Mint Museum, described the portrait as “dignified and graceful, which reflects his years of service”.

the reverse of the

commemorative £5 coin features two new portraits of Queen elizabeth ii, showing a younger and older image of the late monarch.

the design was created by artist John bergdahl in collaboration with the royal Mint.

it will form part of a wider memorial coin collection.

Ms howell said: “We expect customers will start to be able to receive the commemorative range from october and then we expect the 50p memorial circulating coin to be appearing in people’s change probably from december.”

the reverse of the 50p features a design that originally appeared on the 1953 coronation crown. it was struck to commemorate Queen elizabeth ii’s coronation at Westminster Abbey and

includes the four quarters of the royal Arms depicted within a shield.in between each shield is an emblem of the home nations: a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek.

All UK coins bearing the effigy of Queen elizabeth ii will remain legal tender and coins featuring the new King will co-circulate alongside those of his mother.

historically it has been commonplace for coins featuring the effigies of different monarchs to co-circulate, helping to minimise the environmental impact and cost.

there are around 27 billion coins currently circulating in the UK bearing the effigy of Queen elizabeth ii. they will be replaced over time as they become damaged or worn and to meet demand for additional coins.

Hurricane Ian devastates Florida

hurricane ian has left a trail of severe damage as it cut northeast across Florida and reached the Atlantic, where it was expected to head north towards Georgia and South carolina. Streets and homes were flooded, emergency services overwhelmed and millions of customers were without power as ian battered the southwest coast of the peninsula with torrential rains and sustained winds of about 150 mph.

hurricane ian was described as “monstrous” and “historic” by expert meteorologists when it made landfall on the western coast of the Florida peninsula. Storm surges of up 12 feet (3.6 meters) had been reported along 200 kilometres of coastline between the cities of naples and Sarasota.

television images showed how the storm surge had inundated coastal areas of naples, well south of the path of the hurricane’s eye, as well as in Fort Myers. there were other implausible scenes showing how the waters off the beaches of tampa and Sanibel island had suddenly receded, sucked into ian’s rotation and leaving the

seabed exposed.

President Joe biden declared a major disaster, releasing federal funds to help with the recovery as requested by Florida Governor ron deSantis. “ the impacts of this storm are historic and the damage that has been done is historic,” said deSantis in a televised update at 8.45am local time. “ there’s going to be a lot more damageassessing in the days ahead but i think we’ve never seen a flood event like this, or a storm surge of this magnitude.”

entire areas in cities such as naples and Fort Myers were flooded following storm surges described as “catastrophic” by the US national hurricane center (nhc). nearly 2.6 million customers were without electricity across the state, according to the monitoring

site poweroutage.us, and emergency workers in the southwest were having trouble responding to all the calls due to street flooding and road debris.

After ravaging western cuba a day earlier, ian made landfall near Fort Myers at around 3pm last Wednesday as a category 4 storm, but has since been downgraded to category 1 after maximum sustained winds decreased to around 75 mph. despite reduced wind speeds, the storm continued to dump flooding rains across central and northern Florida on its way to the eastern coast.

over 600 flights, including 50 connections to cuba, were cancelled at the international airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, while tampa international Airport remained closed since tuesday night.

Bake Off double elimination

The Great British Bake Offcontestants have been warned about a forthcoming double elimination after a twist in ‘Bread Week’s’ episode. The challenge saw the bakers taking part in Bread Week, where they had to make pizzas, pain aux raisins and a savoury bread dish that looks like a cake called a smörgåstårta.

However, missing from the competitors were RebsLightbody and Abdul Rehman Sharif, who did not compete due to illness.

At the end of the episode, Noel Fielding told Janusz that he had been named Star Baker and sticking to the usual format, Matt Lucas was then given the “horrible job” of announcing which contestant was going home. But after the tense

build-up, the comedian explained: “Well this week, nobody’s going home.

“The judges felt, given the quality here and the fact that Rebs and Abdul aren’t here, that everybody deserves the chance to bake again.”

However, Prue Leith warned that the bonus does have consequences and is only a reprieve: “They were all thrilled to bits because nobody had to go. They’re all friends, they don’t want to see their friends going. But, sooner or later, we have to send two bakers’ home and that’s not nice.”

It is believed that the two missing contestants will be back in the tent this week, but whether this will be the week of the double elimination hasn´t been confirmed.

Diwali: Festival of Lights

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that’s also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities. Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live. But there’s one common theme no matter where people celebrate: the victory of good

over evil.

Dairy foods associated with prostate cancer

Dairy is an important part of a healthy balanced diet. But a new study published by The British Journal of Nutrition suggests that excessive amounts of dairy could increase men’s risk of prostate cancer. About one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the charity Prostate Cancer UK.

But there are certain things - such as smoking and obesity - that make it more likely that you’ll be one of the unlucky ones. The research suggests that “high-intake” of dairy “may” be a risk factor as well - although the topic remains medically controversial.

It was a meta-review, meaning that the study looked at dozens of major studies - 33 in totalthat measured the link between dairy consumption and prostate cancer.

The authors of the study found that overall the risk of prostate cancer was higher for people who consumed 400 grams of dairy products per day, although the types of dairy seemed to make a difference.

The authors wrote: “We showed an increased risk of prostate cancer with consumption of total dairy products, milk, cheese, and butter but an inverse association for whole milk and no association with skim/lowfat milk, yogurt, ice cream, and

cream.”

It added: “Additional studies need to further explore the association between dairy product consumption and different subtypes of prostate cancer.”

According to Prostate Cancer UK: “We don’t know why this is but it might be because of the calcium in them.”

The charity recommends consuming three portions of dairy per day.

It added: “Dairy alternatives with added calcium, such as soya yoghurt or soya milk, also count as dairy foods.

“A portion is one small pot of yoghurt, a glass of milk or a small piece of cheese (matchbox-sized or 30g). Choose lower-fat and lower-sugar options when you can.”

However, it’s important to remember that not consuming enough dairy - which contains

lots of calcium - can risk other conditions such as heart disease.

Restricting your dairy may lead to osteoporosis - a bone disease that is caused when your bones don’t create enough bone or too much, meaning that they easily break.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

Although other signs might be a sign of later-stage prostate cancer, they are still worth knowing, just in case.

• Having to urinate more frequently, often during the night

• Having to rush to the toilet at night

• Difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy)

• Straining or taking a long time while peeing

• WeakFlow when urinating

Foods you never eat raw

Eating raw foods is often heralded as the best way to get the maximum nutrients and flavours from your food. Of course, we all know you should never eat raw chicken, but there are other, lesserknown foods that you should never eat raw. From vegetables to grains, and everything in between, these foods are best for your health when consumed cooked:

Potatoes

Although versatile in the kitchen, the humble potato is another food that should never be eaten raw. It contains starches that are resistant to digestion, which can result in stomach bloating and pain. If a potato has turned green, it might have developed a toxin called solanine, which can cause food poisoning.

Apple Pips

It’s a popular practice to eat the entire apple, but you really should avoid the seeds. They contain a chemical that can turn into cyanide when digested, which can make you feel very ill, although it would take a lot of seeds to have a noticeable effect for most people.

Kidney Beans

Although they are packed with protein, fibre, and antioxidants, kidney beans can cause a lot of abdominal discomfort if consumed raw. They contain the toxin phytohemagglutinin, which causes symptoms similar to food poisoning. To avoid any problems, ensure beans are boiled for at least 10

minutes before eating.

Hot Dog Sausages

Admittedly, hot dogs aren’t the healthiest of foods, but if you’re going to eat them, make sure they’re fully cooked. This goes for wieners that have been “fully cooked” before packaging, as they’re still susceptible to developing Listeria bacteria.

Eggs

Raw eggs are a key ingredient of mayonnaise and are a staple for body builders across the world. However, raw eggs may contain the pathogen salmonella, which can lead to food poisoning. This is whyexperts only consider it safe to use raw eggs if they have been pasteurised. The elderly, pregnant women, and young children are especially vulnerable.

Milk

Raw milk is also known as

unpasteurized milk and carries potentially harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. The pasteurization process kills these bacteria and makes it safe to consume milk. Raw milk is 150 times more likely to cause foodborne illnesses than other dairy products.

Flour

It’s not just the raw egg in that cookie dough mixture that could make you sick, it might also be uncooked flour. Research has shown that during the processes from harvest to processing and making its way to store shelves, flour may come into contact with pathogens such as E. coli, which can only be destroyed through cooking.

Aubergines

Like green potatoes, eggplants contain the toxin solanine, which can cause intestinal distress. Some people might even find they have an allergic reaction to eating raw eggplant!

Lidl bunny cull ordered

Eggplants that were harvested early in their growing season contain higher levels of this compound.

Bitter Almonds

Bitter almonds contain a dangerous combo of hydrogen cyanide and water known as hydrocyanic acid. As few as seven to 10 unprocessed bitter almonds can kill a child, and roughly a dozen to 70 nuts can kill a 150-pound adult.

Rhubarb Leaves

Rhubarb leaves contain a high level of oxalic acid, which can cause kidney damage, various stomach problems, and even death in high enough doses. Stick to eating the stems, and toss the leaves in the compost heap.

Wild Mushrooms

Mushrooms are one of those foods that can be good for you, as they contain things like B vitamins and potassium, but they are not without

risks. Wild mushrooms especially should be avoided, as an inexperienced hunter could misidentify a variety as safe to eat, when it is in fact poisonous.

Pork

Eating raw or undercooked pork could result in catching one of two nasty parasites—trichinosis or pork tapeworm. Trichinosis takes up residence in the small intestine and causes stomach issues or even death. Pork tapeworm is one of the top causes of seizures worldwide.

Elderberries

While many people enjoy elderberries when under the weather for their high vitamin C content, they should avoid consuming raw ones, as they may be poisonous. It’s best to boil them thoroughly before consuming.

Rice

Even if you could get over the dry, hard crunch of eating raw rice, you really shouldn’t. As it can contain disease-causing bacteria. These bacteria aren’tusually seen in cooked rice, so it’s better to cook and properly store any leftover rice. Also be extra careful when reheating rice as if rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores can grow into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. The longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that the bacteria or toxins could make the rice unsafe to eat.

Supermarket chain Lidl has been ordered to destroy its Lindt-like chocolate bunnies by a Swiss court. The ruling went in favour of premium chocolate maker Lindt & Sprüngli after it went to court to try to protect its chocolate bunny from copycat products. The foil wrapped bunny is a chocolate icon, and Lidl had successful sales of a similar foil wrapped bnny but this week, Switzerland’s highest court has orded the Gernam discount retailer to stop selling its version of the bunny. Not only that but the federal court in Lausanne ordered Lidl to destroy all its remaining stock.

The federal court’s ruling overturned one made last year by a Swiss commercial court, which found against Lindt.

The luxury chocolate maker submitted surveys as part of its case showing that its famous Gold Bunny was well known to the public. The federal court ruled that the Lindt and Lidl rabbits were likely to be confused, even though there were some differences between them.

The court ruled that destruction of Lidl’s stock of bunnies was “proportionate, especially as it does not necessarily mean that the chocolate as such would have to be destroyed”, it said in a summary of its verdict, suggesting they could be melted down and reused somehow.

This isn’t the first time Lindt has had to go to battle over its bunnies. The chocolate maker

has been to court multiple times in recent years to protect its popular treat, of which it sells tens of millions each year.

The company applied for a trademark on the threedimensional shape of its bunny in 2000, which was granted the following year.

The issue of whether a chocolate bunny can be trademarked subsequently came before the European court of justice, after a long battle between Lindt and Austrian rival chocolate maker Hauswirth, which also made gold-wrapped chocolate rabbits with a ribbon around its neck.

Germany’s federal court ruled in 2021 that the golden shade of the bunny’s foil wrapping had trademark protection.

Daily multivitamin could keep your mind sharp as you age

Spanish people more active than the French, British and Italians

A new study, commissioned to YouGov by weightloss company Allurion to mark World Heart Day, revealed that among the countries surveyed, Spain has the highest rates of cardiovascular disease among the general population. However, the report also revealed other curious data, some of which seems to indicate a high degree of awareness of the risks to cardiovascular health.

Spaniards, the YouGov study reveals that:

19% of Spaniards consider themselves obese or overweight. This figure stands at 33% in the case of the British, 24% in the case of the French and 22% in the case of the Italians.

general. 47% say they do some sporting activity at least twice a week compared to 38% of Italians, 33% of the French or 29% of the British.

Taking an over the counter multivitamin and mineral supplement for three years led to patients doing better in memory and cognitive tests compared with those taking a placebo tablet, a new study has found. Scientists found that a daily multivitamin could slow the gradual cognitive decline that happens as we get older. After a three year trial, reserchers had part of a test group take a commercially available multivitamin and a control group take a placebo.

At the end of the trial, those who had taken the multivitamin had a ‘brain age’ that was almost two years younger than those who had taken the placebo.

Researcher Laura Baker said the findings were “an eye opener.”

The benefit of taking multivitamins has been debated for many years. Vitamin supplements were once widely recommended as a “just in case” for people with poor diets, based on studies that found those who had taken them did have better health.

However, such studies weren’t randomised, placebo-controlled trials – the most robust kind of medical evidence – and when proper trials were done, they found no benefit from taking supplements for most healthy people. It seemed the earlier results came about because vitamin supplements are generally more popular with people who look after their health in other ways anyway.

The latest research consisted of a randomised trial in nearly 2300 people aged between 65 and 100.

Researchers began the study because they wanted to see if flavanols,

compounds found in chocolate that are claimed to have health benefits, would help delay cognitive decline with age.

The trial included a group that took a standard multivitamin and mineral pill as a comparison.

At the beginning of the trial, the participants did an array of cognitive tests for memory, verbal and number skills over the phone, with the results calculated into a single score.

They were then randomly chosen to take either a flavanol supplement, the combined multivitamin and mineral tablet or a placebo once every day for three years. Similar cognitive tests were repeated every year over the three year period.

All the groups did somewhat better, on average, after one and two years, while at three years, their scores roughly evened out. This was probably because over the first two years people were becoming more familiar with how to do the tests, explained Baker.

Those who took the multivitamin and mineral supplements scored slightly higher than those who took the placebo tablet, but there was no significant benefit in the flavanol group. It isn’t known which components of the multivitamin and mineral tablet were responsible.

The benefit from the multivitamin was greater in people with heart or circulatory disease, such as having had surgery to widen the blood vessels to their heart. This may be because “cardiovascular disease has significant consequences for brain health”, said Baker.

The study, which was carried out between August 10 and 17 in 8 countries, with 1,000 respondents per country, distributed among all age groups over 18 years of age, revealed that only in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates people are not aware that cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of death.

In the specific case of Spain, 11% of those surveyed stated that they suffered from some moderate or severe cardiovascular disease, more than Turkey (10%), Italy (9%) or the United Kingdom (8%). Within Europe, Spain was only surpassed by France, a country in which it affects 12% of the population. Worldwide, Australia (14%) and the Emirates (15%) were the countries with the most diseases of this type, according to the survey.

Regarding the general health of

The main health concern of Spanish people is high cholesterol. Not surprisingly, 56% of the population regularly check their blood cholesterol levels.

Spaniards are among the largest consumers of fruit in the countries analysed. 61% say they eat fruit every day, only surpassed by Italians (66%). However, Spanish people consume the least vegetables (38%) compared to 58% in the case of Italians, 44% French and 42% British.

Contrary to stereotypes, it turns out that the Spanish sleep an average of 6.9 hours a day: more than the British (6.8 hours) and only slightly less than the French (7 hours).

Spain is also the country where people walk the most. 80% of Spaniards say they walk more than 30 minutes a day.

Slightly above Turkey (75%) and well ahead of the French (57 minutes), and also the British (68 minutes). In addition, the Spanish also practise more sports in

70% of Spaniards have tried to lose weight, but only 37% say they have been successful.

Benoit Chardon, International Director at Allurion, commented, “Achieving 5-10% weight loss in obese people has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. There is no magic formula to achieve it. It is about finding the personalised solution tailored to each individual and having technologies and programs that complement improvements in diet and exercise, which are fundamental, but by themselves are not always enough”.

Allurion recently released the first and only ingestible gastric balloon which is now available in more than 80 countries worldwide. It is the first device of its type that does not require surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia and is described as a medical device to help people lose weight and maintain the results achieved. Patients following the Allurion programme lose an average of 15% of their weight in 4 months.

Which sleeping position is best?

It’s one thing we all have in common - sleep. For some of us, sleeping is easy while others find getting the right amount of continuous shuteye more of a challenge. Even the well known Stanford University sleep researcher William Dement reportedly commented that after 50 years of research into sleep, the only solid conclusion he can come to for why we sleep is ‘because we get sleepy’.

Whatever the real reason behind why we sleep, it clearly matters for our health and wellbeing.

But are we doing it right? What does the research say about sleeping position?

Is there a correct sleeping position?

Research shows that most people prefer to sleep on their side. Those who lie on their backs tend to be poor sleepers or have breathing difficulties during the night.

Most of us tend to move around quite a lot during the night. One study of 664 sleepers found, on average, that participants spent about 54 percent of their time in bed sleeping on their side, about 37 percent on their back, and about 7 percent on their front.

Males (especially those aged under 35) tend to be most restless, with more position shifts, and arm, thigh, and upper-back movements during the night.

This may not be a bad thing, as allowing your body to move during the night is generally a good idea.

During sleep, your body will keep track of any pain or discomfort and adjust position accordingly. This is why we usually avoid developing bedsores (or pressure ulcers) in everyday life.

Staying comfortable and allowing movement is key. If you find you can’t move because your partner (or dog) is taking up too much room in the bed, consider switching sides or getting a larger bed.Give yourself some room to move around on either side.

While comfort is important, there is no quality research providing clear evidence for an “optimal sleep position”. Your age, weight, environment, activities, and whether you’re pregnant, all play a role in which sleep position is best for your body.

In one study, people who rested in a position where there

is a rotation of the spine (such as the unsupported side position), woke up with more pain in the morning.

Nonetheless, although some forms of side-sleeping may cause a bit of load on the spine, it appears the side positions, in general, are still better than the other options.

Pillow talk

Choosing the right pillow is vital.

A lack of support for the head and neck during sleep has been found to severely impact spine alignment, and cause muscle problems such as neck pain, shoulder pain, and muscle stiffness.

Pillow material does not appear to affect the spine. Instead, the shape and the height are what matter. A U-shaped pillow may help you have a longer night’s sleep, and a roll-shaped pillow can reduce morning pain and bedtime pain in those suffering from chronic pain.

Passengers on Personal Mobility Vehicles

When it comes to personal mobility vehicles, the law in Spain is quite clear, you are not permitted to carry passengers. The are, by the very definition of the name, “personal” vehicles.

But what exactly are we talking about when we refer to personal mobility vehicles? Most recently, the phrase is used to describe such vehicles as small electric scooters, also referred to within the concept of “micro mobility”. But they can also include bicycles, and whereas you are not allowed to carry passengers on scooters, there is an exception when it comes to bicycles.

Bicycles are one of the sustainable vehicles that are part of urban traffic and must also comply with certain rules to circulate safely and not interfere with that of other road users. In addition to knowing how to signal your manoeuvres correctly and knowing where to ride at all times, prioritising the bike lane when it exists, there is another series of obligations that must be respected,

including the carriage of passengers.

The DGT confirms that adult cyclists are permitted to carry a minor, aged up to 7 years maximum, sitting in an approved seat on the bicycle. Of course, a series of requirements must be met so as not to incur an infraction during the journey, sanctioned with up to 100 euro of fine.

It is important that the age restrictions are complied with. The minor must not exceed this age limit and the driver must be of legal age. Even if the child is under 7 years old, if the bike driver is under 18, he or she will face a traffic fine.

The minor must be properly seated and fastened in an approved chair to transport passengers by bicycle, which can only be installed behind the rider. When installing this accessory, we must take into account the maximum total weight allowed to circulate and that, indeed, the model we have purchased is approved. There are some chairs, depending on their place of manufacture, that do not meet the

requirements to be used in Spain.

Finally, it is mandatory that the minor wears the corresponding protective helmet correctly fastened. Otherwise, we will be infringing the rule and it will not matter if we comply with the rest of the obligations, since we will still face a sanction.Adults should also wear a helmet at all times to encourage safer practices.

Remember though, the characteristics we have described are the only exception for carrying passengers on personal mobility vehicles. On the road, children cannot be carried in trailers towed by bicycles. Moreover, in no circumstances are passengers allowed to be carried on electric scooters.

The Modernising of the Roadside Warning

Hopefully, we all know by now that there are certain items which are mandatory in vehicles. Spare wheel and tools to change it (or emergency repair kit that some modern cars carry), high visibility vests, and two warning triangles are the main items, but times are changing and warning triangles are in the process of being replaced.

Naturally, we hope it never happens, but if we do suffer a breakdown, or other incident on the road, it is crucial to protect ourselves (high visibility vest) and the scene (warning triangles). However, in attempting to offer that protection, by warning other road users of the situation, there has been far too many deaths, people who have been killed in the process of putting out warning triangles.

As a result, the DGT has set about replacing these triangles with a

warning light which can be fixed to the highest point of the vehicle, such as the roof, and emits a warning light to warn other road users of the danger.

These lights are available now, but if you haven’t bought one yet, it might be prudent to wait a little while longer, for reasons we will explain shortly.

These flashing orange warning lights, technically known as the signal V16, will become mandatory for all vehicles from 1 January 2026, this completely replacing the warning triangle. You are permitted to use them now, replacing the triangles, but it is on that date that every vehicle must carry them, and use them in an emergency.

There are differences in these lights. Some are visible from about 1000 metres away, providing better protection, the greater the distance from which they are visible, the better.

The price range is currently between

about 15 and 30 euro, with the average price being 25, although when it comes to safety it is better not to compromise on quality, so shop around for the best option (but maybe not yet).

If you have already bought one of these lights, well done, you have taken a huge step in offering better protection in the event of an incident. But if you haven’t, you might be better off, as the next stage for these lights is for them to include geolocation equipment, which will enable the V16 light to transmit your location to the DGT, thus allowing your actual location to be recorded on their incident map and warning other road users remotely of the incident before they arrive at the scene.

According to the DGT, these lights with geolocation should start to go on sale in Spain in December, hence the reason why it might be worth waiting a little while. We don’t yet know the price, although they will inevitably be more expensive than the current models.

In the meantime, it is important to know how to use warning triangles. Make sure you are wearing your high visibility vest before attempting to place the triangles on the road. You must then place your warning triangles in such a manner to provide sufficient warning to oncoming vehicles.

Ordinarily, you must place your triangles 50 metres away from your vehicle, so that they are visible from a distance of 100 metres. In the event that your vehicle is after a bend or over the brow of a hill, move the triangle further away so that it is visible before vehicles reach the bend or brow.

On a normal two-way road, you must place one triangle behind and one in front of your vehicle, both at a distance of 50 metres and visible from at least 100 metres.

On a one-way road, or a road which has more than 3 lanes, such as a motorway, you only need to place one triangle at the rear of your vehicle 50 metres away and visible from 100 metres.

TaLeS FROM THe TOP FLIgHT

After 35 minutes, an interesting stat flashed up on my screen. Erling Haaland was on track to score 65 goals for Manchester City this season. Just take a moment to let that settle in. 65 goals. By full time, it was 66.

How so? Because after 35 minutes against Man United he had scored twice and City led 3-0.

If you add up the total distance of Haaland’s goals this season, it probably only comes to about 18 yards such is his ability to apply the finishing touch in the area. Everyone thought he might batter United’s Martinez into submission - but it was Rafa Varane who went off “injured” before half time having realised the bench was probably the best place to try and stop the Norweigan from.

United had been a bit better before the international break but even the most blind of fans will have recognised getting a result at the Ethihad was likely to be one step beyond them. And so it was.

United fans started streaming out of the ground before half-time, which seemed bizarre. Yes, City were 4-0 up by that point but this wasn’t a Man United performance lacking in effort or desire. It wasn’t addled by attitude problems. They were just being cut to shreds by a much, much better side. Games like that, teams need their fans - unless, of course, they knew of a cheaper pint outside the ground in which case, fair dos.

Haaland didn’t stop there - netting his third consecutive home hat-trick in a row and scoring the first Manc Derby treble since Franny Lee back in 1970. And like the proverbial London buses, you wait 52 years for a derby hat-trick and then two come along at onceFoden getting City’s sixth. United won the second half though, right?

So, if Thomas Partey is banging them in like that from 30 yards after a 21 pass move then maybe Arsenal are in a title race. And Xhaka scoring, revelling in this new box to box midfield role? And if Gabby Jesus is scoring the scrappy ones, wait a minute. That sounds like all kinds of goals from all kinds of players. Yikes. Arsenal might actually be quite good.

We’ve been here before though, we’ve definitely been here before. But maybe this time they are actually good and will remain good for a whole season?

Harry Kane scored because it was a London derby but it never looked like it was in doubt for Arsenal really. Even before that red card. Was it a red?

Antonio Conte clearly didn’t think so refusing to mention Anthony Taylor personally, before going on to talk about Premier League refereeing being a bit rubbish in general - as if nothing at all had prompted that thought process. Oh, Kane’s goal made him the first player to score 100 away Premier League goals, apparently.

Emerson Royal has been an accident waiting to happen since he arrivedSpurs fans must have hoped they’d got a less stupid option since he replaced Serge Aurier who was, frankly, nuts.

Arsenal for the title? Well, if by the title we mean second place, then maybe. They’re good right now, but they are not City.

The value of Liverpool’s title campaign is sinking faster than the British pound. Leonardo Trossard was probably hanging out to have something in common with Andrei Arshavin and now he does - a Premier League hat-trick away at Anfield.

Welcome, Roberto De Zerbi - yes, it is often like this. Brighton were a clever, intricate side under Graham Potter and when their new manager said he wasn’t planning to change much at first he was not lying. Brighton outplayed and out-thought King Kloppo’s side at every turn in the early stages - racing into a 2-0 lead as the heavy metal mentality monster machine coughed and spluttered once again. Klopp’s style of pressing and playing is so precise that it only takes something to be marginally off and it falls apart - remember them pre-Fabinho? It’s just like that again which is ironic, as they appear to be a team without Fabinho once again given how the Brazilian’s form has also tanked like the economy.

But, Liverpool did fight back to lead 3-2 thanks to Bobby Firmino wishing himself a very happy birthday - it’s just that Trossard fancied being the party pooper and left with one of the many match balls on show.

Thiago Silva is a lucky boy, isn’t he? Having seen the new boss put his 38-year-old legs into a defensive duo, it is no wonder that Silva struggled against the pace and movement of the Crystal Palace attack. He’s used to having a couple of younger lads to do his running for him - and to make it worse, the young lad he was given on Saturday was Wesley Fofana who seems to have brought his concrete boots down from Leicester.

Silva fell over inside his own half and stopped the ball not once, but twice with his hands preventing Palace racing through on goal. Was it denying a clear goalscoring opportunity? Probably. Once it was given as a yellow, was it a clear and obvious error? Probably not. If the manager who saw the decision go their way comes out and says, “yeah, I can see why Patrick might be upset. It’s 50-50” you know Graham Potter is thinking they’ve got away with one there.

As for Chelsea, a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park with Yo-Pierre remembering what it’s like to score in the Premier League and Conor Gallagher doing what you knew he was going to do after being politely applauded on to the field bodes very well indeed. They dominated the ball (standard Potter fare that) and struggled to convert chances (equally standard Potter fare) but having that extra bit of class that he may not have had available to him at Brighton meant the three points went back to the Bridge.

The Wolves board are grew too tired of the tripe being served up by Bruno Lage. They got done over 2-0 by an average West Ham performance which meant the Moysiah could enjoy the Sunday papers outside the relegation zone and Lage would have had a

stressful continental knowing his side were in the bottom three and his job was very much on the line.

Wolves invested over £100m in the summer and, understandably, want a little more from their money so are no doubt lining up the next Portuguese manager to sit in the dugout. I think Lage came from Benfica, so let’s assume they’ll tap up Sporting or Porto this time. Either way, that pint of Lage went a bit flat a bit too quickly.

Ralf Hassenhuttl - does anyone know what he was wearing in Southampton’s defeat to Everton?

I am looking to compile some data on whether they win more games when he is in that suit or when he is in a tracksuit. Or whether it makes no difference at all and Southampton have the ability to lose any match at any time.

The Ev came back from a goal down away from home to take three points - careful, people might start thinking Frank Lampard knows what he is doing.

A bad day for Fulham would be having a man sent off in the first ten minutes and watching Newcastle stroll to victory. Throw in Big Mitro going off injured and you have a very bad day

for Fulham.

Leeds and Aston Villa didn’t fancy putting on a show for the cameras in Sunday’s second game - City and United must have used up the entertainment quota.

Referees and VAR get a lot of stick, especially in this column - so it is only fair that one who sticks to his guns over what VAR suggests gets a standing ovation.

Thomas Bramall, taking charge of only his second Premier League game, was clearly working to the strategy of “I’ll be back in the Championship next week, so I am doing this my way”. Brentford’s Ajer bundled into Bournemouth’s Zemura. Bramall waved play on, VAR said he might want to have another look. Usually at this point, the ref believes he made a mistake and changes his mind. Not Bramall, oh no. He had a look, decided he was bang on and got on with it. So much time for that stance.

He also turned down a deep-intoinjury-time shout and blew up for fulltime. VAR had probably knocked off by then as they didn’t even take a look.
