Alicante tops Madrid as favourite for tourists

the province of Alicante topped the list for domestic tourism in August, although without reaching the number of visitors that it used to enjoy prior to the pandemic. A recent study placed Alicante on top of Madrid for domestic tourism. the figures were released as part of the study of ‘mobility for leisure reasons’ carried out during the month of August by the national institute of Statistics (ine) based on the positioning of mobile phones.

the figures reveal that during August, 1,243,149 people from the rest of Spain visited the Alicante region, a figure that exceeded even that of Madrid, which welcomed 1,099,907 tourists. cádiz was very close behind, with 1,093,511, and the influx to Málaga was also very high, with 1,003,005. these were the only four provinces with more than a million domestic holidaymakers during arguably the year’s busiest month for tourism.

the results for the month of July were the reverse when Madrid was the province with the most tourists and Alicante was in second place. the data for August is highly important for the sector as it corresponds to the busiest holiday period of the year, in which the greatest volume of travel takes place and, with a few very specific exceptions, the highest tourist numbers are enjoyed across all regions of Spain. the number of people who went on holiday to the

Alicante province in August was no exception and exceeded that of July by almost 85,000, but there was a striking difference to other summers: it was the smallest monthly increase in the last three years.

Alicante towns and villages received, throughout August 2022, altogether about 95,000 fewer tourists than in the same month of 2019, just before the pandemic. not only that, but visitors to the province fell more than notably in

relation to August last year, by 15.62%. the explanation for this, say experts, must be the coronavirus pandemic. restrictions to travel abroad that were still in force in the summer of 2021 and now a year later have disappeared or have become much more lax. basically this means that more Spanish holidaymakers opted to holiday within Spain last year, meaning that while this year’s summer was a success in terms of domestic tourism, figures last year were unusually high so this year shows a ‘drop’.

the ine study also showed that 65,204 residents in the province of Alicante travelled in August. the main destination was France, where 16,523 people travelled, followed by Portugal with 8,351, italy with 6,593 and the United Kingdom with 5,427.

Amata fair with craft demonstrations in Tibi

the beautiful Paseo La Santa in tibi, with its little chapel, large trees and beautiful views, will host, on 21, 22 and 23 october, for the third time some twenty authentic artisans, who will not only set up their stalls, but also demonstrate with how much love and skill they make their pieces. A stilt walker and a fakir will animate the fair and for the little ones there will be a merrygo-round, face painting, table games and craft workshops. Various associations and local artisans collaborate in the event with exhibitions and workshops.

the fair promises to be a true meeting of craftsmen, with many craft demonstrations. A potter brings his wheel so you can make your own bowl or cup; the spinner explains the entire wool process: washing, carding, dyeing and spinning; the luthier explains how to make a guitar or flamenco drum and in another workshop sheets you can make recycled paper. Several artisans give clay, wire or leather workshops for children, so that they can make their own piece of crafts and take it home. the organization of the fair is once again in the hands of the Amata association, a guarantee that everything on offer is handmade by the same artisans

who serve you at their stalls. each stall offers something different and there will be something for all tastes and all ages. if you are looking for a special gift for a wedding, a birthday or, why not?, for christmas, you will surely find it at this fair there is also an area where several local businesses sell their sausages and pastries, their honeys and horchata. At the tourist information point you will see that the town and its surroundings have much to offer. You can take advantage of the visit to the fair to take a walk through the picturesque streets

of the village or visit the ruins of the castle and the reservoir, one of the oldest in Spain. it dates from the 16th century; in its time it was the most important dam in europe and still works!

the fair opens on Friday, the 21st of october at 5 pm. opening times for Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 october are from 11 am to 2 pm and in the afternoons from 5 pm to 11 pm or later. More information about the fair (also in english) at 639 979 678. the complete programme and photos of last year’s fair are at https://www. puebloartesano.es/tibi.html.

AENA reduces airport fees to help airlines increase passenger numbers

Alicante’s airport management authority, AenA, announced a new initiative this week in which it will reduce its passenger fees for airlines in order to try to boost winter tourism for the costa blanca. the public management company announced that the incentive is set to kick in at the beginning of november and will remain in place until March 2023.

the objective, said AenA, is to improve aircraft occupancy and as such, it will offer airlines a 50% reduction on the rates it charges per passenger.

the rate per passenger is currently set at 5.73 euros for eU citizens and 8.62 euros for travellers from elsewhere, including britons which make up 30% of the total footfall through Alicante-elche airport. the discounts will apply between from november until March 2023 when four million passengers are expected to pass through the airport. Sources from the aeronautical sector calculate that the move represents a saving of around 10 million euro, which airlines could then pass to passengers by reducing the price of flights. the airport is still in post-

covid recovery mode and has around 85% of the traffic it had in 2019, prior to the outbreak of the pandemic. in August, the percentage of passenger recovery was close to 100%, but the global economic crisis after russia’s invasion of Ukraine has obviously had an impact.

Minister for tourism, reyes Maroto, does not deny that in 2023 “the impact of the war will be higher compared to recent months”, and because of this she stressed that it will be vital to generate confidence in visitors as was done after the pandemic - when Spain promoted widespread vaccination and the covid digital certificate. After a summer season with what she described as a “robust recovery” of foreign tourism in Spain, the airline sector faces an uncertain

winter season within the current “world of uncertainties” that must be faced “with company balance sheets [that are] much weaker” than before the pandemic.

Aena’s fee reduction incentive will be increased to 100% for long-haul flights with 70% occupancy in the hope of reactivating the Asian market and the connections with north America and the Middle east, which have seen slower growth than other markets such as the domestic, european, African (flights with Morocco from Alicante) and Latin America.

Since July 2020 up until August of this year, Aena has applied reimbursements and commercial incentives to airlines worth more than 100 million euro.

New leader for Orihuela PP

PP politician and former orihuela Mayor emilio bascuñana has announced his resignation from the position of lead candidate, leaving the way clear for the party to propose a new candidate for mayor in the 2023 local elections.

emilio bascuñana was mayor of orihuela before being ousted by a vote of ‘no confidence’ leaving the way clear for the current PSoe mayor carolina Gracia to take over the role, supported by the c’s. in his statement, made on Friday, the former mayor claimed he had been forced to bring his announcement forward but that he is supporting the new candidacy led by Jose (Pepe)Vegara. PepeVegara is currently the President of

the Association of the Moors and christians ‘SantasJusta y rufina’ of orihuela. he will now represent the PP as its number one candidate in the May 2023 elections and will govern as Mayor should the party be elected.

emilio bascuñana said: “ the important thing today is that we go out together, whenever orihuela has had a weak PP, the opponents who have always been disastrous for orihuela have won. it is important that in the month of May we show them the door. regardless of any personalism, the PP’s interest in serving orihuela hasto be above all else. regardless of whether there is any disappointment or ambition of someone, that unity always prevails. that is what the

PP needs and so does orihuela.

“i am going to try from now on to contribute and be available to the relay and i will never try to be the heavyweight on duty and influence, whoever enters has to exercise their responsibility. that the interest of the party and of orihuela prevail over anything else. i congratulate Pepe Vegara for the challenge that lies ahead of him. it is a moment of enthusiasm and commitment for that attitude of service. From the outset, that recognition for taking this step in something as complicated as politics. You are going to start to have some detractors who are going to put the magnifying glass. i encourage you to have all the courage and strength. You have my personal commitment.”

Alicante receives lowest government investment per inhabitant in Spain

For the second consecutive year, Alicante is set to be the Spanish province that will receive the least investment per inhabitant from the central government in the entire country.

According to the General State budget presented in congress this week by Minister for Finance Maria Jesus Montoro, investment in Alicante will add up to around 85.5 euro per person. the national average, according to ineca ( the institute for economic Studies of the Alicante Province) the national average is 283.7, placing Alicante at the bottom of the table, next only to Jaen which will have a state investment of 110 euro per inhabitant.

in addition, ineca pointed out that the figure set to be invested in the Alicante province represents a cut of 12.3% on the investments planned by the central executive in this year’s budget, in which 97.7 euros per inhabitant was indicated.

Last year the Valencian Government managed to secure from central government, by way of compensation, the commitment to transfer an extra 300 million to the region through

two special agreements, which were to be used for innovative mobility policies and for the development of sustainable infrastructures. however, the region is still said to be waiting for payment of the agreed funding.

Faced with this situation, ineca said that Alicante is once again “forgotten by the central Administration, leaving it in the queue for investments, which will end up being a ruin for the companies and citizens of this territory who have seen how the trains have passed by for almost twenty years”.

President of ineca, nacho Amirola, expressed his concerns and recalled that “budgets are the perfect tool

for administrations to correct imbalances and inequalities, but when they constantly marginalise a territory, such as in our case, they become instruments that prevent the normal development of our economy”.

Amirola also took the opportunity to point out that the per capita income of the Alicante province is one of the lowest in Spain with 20,116 euros in 2019 when the average in Spain is 26,417 euros. in this regard, ineca does not hesitate to link the shortfall with the lack of investment in the area and points out that over the last 19 years the wealth per inhabitant of Alicante has grown 10 percent less than the average.

Fortunately, it was a much calmer week for UK assets, after the highly volatile week that had preceded it. Absolute ranges for the pound and gilt yields were far more constrained, and the majority of newsflow ensured that markets were far more sanguine on all things UK. Ahead of the tory party conference, the government made the sudden decision to abandon their plans to scrap the highest rate of income tax, which is at 45p. even though the saving to the government does not amount to much in real terms, the decision will have subdued many angry MPs within the conservative party, and it gave the government the opportunity to say that they had listened to the criticism of their minibudget, during the keynote speeches from both the PM and chancellor.

the bank of england’s efforts to calm the gilt market haveworked well thus far. their allocated target of gilt purchases totalling £65b of up to £5bn per day for 13 days, looks like being nowhere near tested. the latest figures show that they have only had to buy a fraction of this amount to ensure that gilt yields remain anchored. it may well be that markets are waiting for the boe to finish this operation before there is targeted selling again, but the mere presence of the boe has been enough to calm markets. Sometimes it is what you say that you are going to do that is most powerful.

Sterling had quickly unwound all of the previous week’s declines by Monday morning, and having had a previous weekly range of 1.0300 to 1.1235, GbP/USd has spent most of this week gyrating between 1.1200 and 1.1500. Much of the rally for the pound has been driven by the weaker dollar. Althoughthe announcement by credit rating agency Fitch that they have downgraded UK government debt from ‘stable’ to ‘negative’ has helped weigh on the pound since yesterday (thursday).

downgrades aside, now that the tory party conference is behind us and markets have settled, the pound is likely to take much of its direction from incoming UK data, and there is plenty of that in store for this week, including the latest employment, industrial and manufacturing Production. however, the broader dollar direction will always remain a major contributor. calmer, but for how long?

EURO

the latest batch of euro area economic data continues to highlight how the region’s economy is weakening. euro area retail Sales dropped another 0.3% (MoM/Aug), with the yearly figure dropping by 2%, clearly highlighting how the increases to the cost of living are impacting the consumer’s spending habits. there were particularly large declines in both Germany (1.3%) and holland (2.2%). the latest S&P Global composite and Services PMi readings also reflected the overall contraction for the region’s economy, with both cementing their places below the key 50 threshold.

Whilst the data might be weak, the single currency pushed higher for a large portion of the week, evidencingthe broadly weaker greenback. eUr/USd moved from a low of under 0.9600 at the end of September to tap parity, before slipping back under 0.9800 by yesterday’s ( thursday) close. the range of GbP/eUr was between 1.1324 – 1.1561, perhaps highlighting how this week has been as much about the dollar, as anything else.

Looking ahead, next week’s German inflation reading will be key,and having reached 10.9% (YoY/Sep), markets will be paying close attention to see if there have been any continued increases in inflation, especially given that we are approaching winter and the pressure put on the consumerthrough the ongoing energy crisis.

Young Scottish man fights for life

A 20-year-old Scottish tourist from Paisley is fighting for his life, after being stabbed in the neck. the horrifying attack happened at one of the resorts popular venues, the broadway cabaret bar.

the young man is believed to have been on holiday with

friends and was chatting with other customers in the bar before the incident happened. Witnesses claim that Samuel Mcnicholl got into an argument with a staff member which then turned violent. Shocked customers saw the youngster covered in blood as he held his hands to his neck.

reports says he was stabbed in the neck several times, whilst one witness said the man ‘had his throat slashed’. A nurse on holiday rushed to his aid until medics and police arrived. the man was taken to hospital where he was operated on and is thought to be recovering.

Speed camera misery

the speed camera located on the n332 from campoamor towards Mil Palmeras is causing misery for drivers who are regularly being fined. drivers caught driving at more than 80km per hour are fined 100 euros, but locals believe that the fines are unlawful as the road signage indicates the end of the 70km limit, meaning that vehicles can travel at 100km per hour. however, advice from the

n332 group points out that in in 2019 there were changes made across Spain to the maximum permitted speed limits. the limits differ depending on the type of road and the width of the hard shoulder. the permitted maximum speed on this section of the n332 is 90km per hour. this of course could still mean that drivers may have some recourse if they were fined for driving between 80km and

90km per hour on this stretch of the n332. if authorities want to limit the road to 80km per hour, then it should have the relevant signage.

the issue has caused considerable local debate but be warnedthat the cameras on this stretch of road are connected and fully operational and are logging fines for any vehicle travelling at more than 80km per hour.

Firefighters and ambulance crews rushed to the scene. the trapped woman was rescued and given cPr after going into cardiac arrest but died at the scene.

Alicante police arrest Russian fugitive wanted for setting a woman on fire

Police in Alicante have arrested a woman wanted in russia for murdering another woman, with whom she had been having an argument, by setting her on fire. the woman now faces 15 years in prison in russia.

Although police are unsure what the argument was about, they do know that the victim was struck on the head, doused in petrol and set alight. the incident took place in 2015 in a town near Moscow. the suspect has been on the run since but was recently located in Alicante by national police.

the russian fugitive is said to be a 40-year-old woman on whom an international arrest warrant (oid) had been issued.

She was hiding at an address on calle Garbinet in Alicante.

She will now have to answer to police in her own country, once her extradition is processed by Spain’s national high court.

She is accused of the crime of murder and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, according to data provided by the Alicante national Police.

the arrest was carried out by agents of the organised crime Group of the Judicial Police brigade of the Alicante Provincial Police Station in collaboration with the Fugitive Group of the General Judicial Police Station. officers received information from the central office of

interpol about an international arrest warrant issued by the russian authorities on a woman who could be residing in the province of Alicante.

According to the files, the woman who had been in hiding in Alicante had a conflict with another woman and decided to end her life. to do this, while they were on a car trip, the fugitive stopped her vehicle and is alleged to have given her companion a strong blow to the head. She is then believed to have dragged her into a ravine, doused her with gasoline and set her on fire while she was still

alive, causing her death.

After receiving the information from interpol, Spanish Police carried out multiple enquiries until they found an address in Alicante where the wanted woman might have been residing. the investigators established a surveillance operation that concluded with the arrest of the fugitive. the woman was taken to police facilities and was later placed at the disposal of the central court of instruction number 6 of the national court. She now awaits extradition to russia to face justice.

My partner and I met at college and quickly moved in together. He was aiming for a Law degree. He now tells me that he wants to quit education saying it was too much hard work, and amazingly he wants to continue with a low paid, menial job he works at part time. I love him, but things aren’t the same as they used to be. I am heading for an academic career, and I worry that we will inevitably mix in different social circles and grow apart. When I talk to him about going back to college, he says he is happy and wants to continue with his job; he also recently took the opportunity to cut his working hours. He now sits at home most days playing games. He’s putting on weight, and drinks, and there are times when he is so drunk that he phones in sick to his job - his boss gave him a written warning last week. When I challenge him, he says if he finishes work it’s the perfect set up so that I can concentrate on my career, and once we are married and have children he can do the reverse roll thing, and take care of the kids and home. This has set alarm

bells ringing for me, and I am not sure it’s what I want anymore.

C.L.A.R.O. replies

the newly registered political party for orihuela costa Partido por la independencia de orihuela costa (Pioc) recently offered an olive branch to c.L.A.r.o the costa’s existing political party calling for them to work together in the interests of those living in orihuela costa.

however, a statement issued by c.L.A.r.o it claims that Pioc is “based on the deception that independence for orihuela costa is possible – it is not.”

c.L.A.r.o said: “ the reality of the situation (see the Spanish law 7/1985 and Valencia law 8/2010) is that while independence of part of an existing municipality is legally possible, the conditions in the case of orihuela costa make it impossible.

“First of all, a petition for independence must be signed by at least 50 percent of the resident (empadronado) population. each signature must be validated and paid for by a notary (perhaps €10 per signature) or by the Secretary of the town hall in faraway orihuela city. in the case of orihuela costa, the number of signatures required to support a petition amounts to nearly 15,000. considering that the total orihuela costa vote in municipal elections is less than 2,300 (and of course not all would be in favour of independence), this would require another 12,700 signatures from a less politically active population often absent for various periods of the year in the case of non-

Spanish. And the time allowed would not be unlimited, so this alone is virtually impossible.

“Although inconceivable, in the case of orihuela costa, a validated petition with some 15,000 signatures would then be submitted to the orihuela town council for consideration, involving economic analyses of the viability of the demand and the consequences for the municipality as a whole. in the case of orihuela it is clear that all orihuela based political parties and any government of whatever composition would be opposed to independence for orihuela costa. they would not therefore facilitate the required economic analyses.”

c.L.A.r.o uses La Murada as an example to support its perspective. A valid petition for the independence of La Murada was submitted to the orihuela municipal government but the analyses were never completed and the movement for independence fizzled out.

the statement continues: “ the failure of the orihuela town council to approve a petition for independence for orihuela costa either by non-cooperation or a negative vote in the plenary of the council could be appealed. the appeal would be considered by the Valencia regional government and the tribunal Superior de Justicia de la comunidad de Valencia. detailed economic reports and costly legal submissions would be required. the initiators of the petition

would be responsible for the costs involved.

consideration of the petition by the Valencian authorities would take place in the context of the 2013 law on the rationalisation and Sustainability of Local Administrations the purpose of which is to reduce the number of municipalities in Spain of which there are over 8,000.”

According to a lawyer expert in administrative matters consulted by c.L.A.r.o. independence for orihuela costa, even if orihuela town council were in agreement (inconceivable), would be “unthinkable” in the context of this law and in general he considers that independence for orihuela costa is impossible for “political, legal and economic reasons”.

c.L.A.r.o. describes the notation of local independence as a ‘fairy tale’ and use the same term when addressing

Pioc’s notation of a joint candidate list to contest the 2023 local election.

Joint working it said: Another fairy tale which Pioc is spinning is that if c.L.A.r.o. and the principal neighbourhood associations in orihuela costa joined Pioc and presented a joint list of candidates for next May’s municipal elections (this would not be possible in the case of neighbourhood associations since these associations are invariably nonpolitical and would not be able to field candidates) the joint list could elect 3-4 councillors and maybe hold the balance of power in the next orihuela municipal government.”

“the harsh truth is that the glaring inadequacies that orihuela costa suffers from and against which c.L.A.r.o. has been campaigning for 16 years cannot be achieved alone. Given

the realities of the limited number of eligible voters on the coast and the difficulties of mobilising the vote, we cannot escape the need to find potential political allies in orihuela who could help achieve our aims of decent basic services and infrastructure and a cleaner and greener orihuela costa. Whatever their frustration and the temptations for residents to think there is an easy solution to our problems it is not independence.”

“if Pioc contests next year’s municipal elections waving the flag of independence they would probably receive limited support but they would divide the vote of the coast (as they did in 2019 being represented in the list of an orihuela party, the most negative to the interests of orihuela costa), weaken its strength and make worse the task of remedying the injustices from which orihuela costa disgracefully suffers.”

Train crash trial starts

Nine years after a high-speed train crash that killed 80 people, a major trial is underway to determine responsibility in Spain’s worst rail disaster in almost eight decades.

Relatives of the victims, some in tears, trickled into a cultural centre which has been transformed into a courtroom to accommodate the many parties involved in the trial in the north-western city of Santiago de Compostela.

On 24th July, 2013, a train travelling from Madrid veered off the tracks as it hurtled round a sharp bend on the outskirts of Santiago, a city in the region of Galicia. It ploughed into a concrete siding, leaving 80 people dead - including 12 foreigners - and more than 140 injured.

The accident happened on the eve of the festival of St James, one of Jesus’s disciples, whose remains are said to rest in a Santiago shrine that draws huge numbers of pilgrims every year.Thousands of people were in the city for the annual event, which was called off when officials declared a week of mourning.

Two people have been charged with responsibility for the accident - the driver, Francisco Garzon, and the former safety director at state rail operator ADIF, Andres Cortabitarte. Both are facing charges of “homicide due to gross professional negligence” and prosecutors are calling for each to face four years behind bars.

The victims’ families are claiming nearly 58 million euros in damages, court documents show.

At the time of the crash, the train was travelling at 179 kilometres (111 miles) per hour, more than twice the speed limit for that stretch of track, according to its black box data recorders.

Investigators said the tragedy resulted from a lapse in attention by the 52-yearold driver, who ended a mobile phone call with the on-board conductor just moments before the train lurched off the rails.

The driver’s lawyer, Manuel Prieto, urged the court not to put all the blame for the accident on his client’s shoulders.

“All humans make mistakes, but the lack of (security) measures is what allows human error to become an accident,” he told reporters.

The courts initially said excessive speed was “the sole cause of the accident”, charging Garzon with reckless homicide and causing injuries.

But its finding that state rail operator

ADIF bore no criminal liability was later revised following complaints by the victims’ families who said it was at fault because there was no automatic braking system in place nor sufficient warning signs before the bend.

As a result, the investigation was reopened in 2016 and ADIF’s Andres Cortabitarte was also charged.

The Alvia 04155 victims’ association has long complained that no politician was held to account for the “negligence” it blames for the accident, and that the trial has taken so long to start.

“We have a bittersweet feeling because it comes a decade later, and some people will not see justice served because they have sadly passed away,” the spokesman for the association, Jesus Dominguez, said.

The court will hear witness testimony from 669 people during the trial, which is scheduled to run until 10thFebruary.

Government approves Lorca solar plant

The Spanish Government has given the green light to a solar plant in the Murcian town of Lorca. The 270-millioneuro development will cover more than 380 hectares and will be created by Madrid-based solar energy equipment supplier X-ELIO.

The plant will generate up to 386 megawatts of power, create more than 300 jobs during construction and bury 15km of cable. The company has said that providing jobs for local residents will be a priority and that it will also use the products and services supplied by local businesses where possible.

It is estimated that the plant will produce 748,000 megawatts hours of renewable and sustainable energy in its first year. It is believed that this is enough to supply enough energy for 215,000 homes. This will stop 148,328 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere.

The proposals for the solar farm were first put forward around ten years

ago but have only just been agreed ay the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and the proposal has undergone several changes over the years due to objections from the local community, environmental groups and the town councils of neighbouring towns who had concerns regarding the highvoltage overhead cable.

X-ELIO has agreed to allocate more than 500 hectares to various environmental programmes that will held recover, improve and develop the habitat of endangered birds that nest near-by including the bustard, black-bellied sandgrouse and the lesser kestrel. This comes after concerns that the plant could disrupt the nesting patterns of the birds. There are also schemes planned to increase the biodiversity of the fauna, such as the creation of ponds, refuges and troughs for reptiles, small mammals and amphibians.

Mrs Brown back for Christmas

Whilst Mrs Brown’s Boys has been off TV screens for nearly 10 years, the show is set to make a comeback with a mini-series next year and two Christmas specials. This was due to happen in 2022, but production was put on hold due to scheduling difficulties and Covid delays.

Fiona O’Carroll has confirmed the show will return for a new series, with filming set to take place in October.Fiona, who is Brendan O’Carroll’s daughter and plays Maria, Agnes’ daughter in law in the show, said: “In October we’ll be filming Mrs Brown: two Christmas specials and the first of a mini-series of four episodes, the other three early next year. “We’ve the live show in November at the SSE Arena in Belfast and 3Arena in Dublin. And

we’re planning more theatre dates for next year.”

The mini-series had been pushed back originally, with Fiona explaining at the time that there were lots of factors causing the delay.

“Well, you know what this industry is like. There is lots of talk and lots of talk and until it is happening you will never really know. Yes, there is talk. We were supposed to be doing a mini-series this year but, unfortunately, due to various different reasons it didn’t happen. So, there is talk of it happening next year, a possible mini-series,” she said of the upcoming series.

“It is not just down to us, it is down to studio time, it is down to crew and it is down to cast.”

Eating seeds could lower cholesterol

Having high cholesterol means you have too much of a fatty substance known as cholesterol in your blood. Over time this can build up in your blood vessels and if not treated can cause blockages. These blockages can be dangerous and can result in conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.

High cholesterol can be caused by many factors including lack of exercise, smoking and drinking alcohol. However, it is often linked with diet and eating too much food high in saturated fats. In the same way that certain foods can lead to high cholesterol, other foods can help reduce it.

Experts now believe that one seed high in “good” fats could be beneficial to those looking to lower their cholesterol - sesame seeds. These can be added to a number of healthy dishes like stir-fried veg and chicken and Asian rice and noodle dishes. They can also be tossed into salads, sprinkled onto hummus, sushi and soups.

Adding one tablespoon of these healthy high-fat foods to your lunchtime salad or evening dinner can provide you with an extra 14 grams of total fat. They are rich in both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and low in saturates.

Studies have shown that consuming more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat relative

to saturated fat can lower levels of bad cholesterol in your body. Whilst both these healthy fats are recognised to lower cholesterol levels, sesame seeds also contain plant compounds known as lignans and phytosterols which have also been found to lower our cholesterol levels.

This was backed by a study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, which concluded that sesame seeds could lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein or “bad” cholesterol.

And another paper, which was published in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science in 2017, reported how sesame seed oil also lowered triglycerides, a type of blood fat.

Research has also shown that regularly consuming sesame seeds can help decrease high

cholesterol and triglycerides, a type of blood fat. Having too much of foods that contain triglycerides for example, meat, dairy, oils and fats, however, can increase the risk of heart disease and even higher levels can generate conditions like pancreatitis.

High-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol works to reduce cholesterol levels by absorbing it and carrying it back to the liver. The liver then removes it from the body.

In contrast, low-density lipoprotein (“bad” cholesterol) is what can build up on the walls of your blood vessels and over time this causes the insides of the vessels to narrow.

A healthy level of total cholesterol in the blood is considered to be five or less millimoles per litre (mmol/l).

New York Times full-cooked failure

The New York Times shared their version of the British classic fry-up, declaring it “very untraditional”, and divided social media users. Sharing a recipe and photo of their “SheetPan Full English Breakfast”, it attracted the attention of people from all over the globe, who had incredibly opposing views on whether their version was better.

Their fry-up included white

button mushrooms, plum tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, “breakfast” sausages, eggs and buttered toast. The New York Times described the recipe as having “breakfast for dinner” in a “British-style”.

The fact that bacon, fried bread and baked beans are all missing enraged some Brits and even attracted the attention of the Heinz UK Twitter account, who simply replied, “Ummm.”

People were quick to point out there was nothing remotely similar to a Full English, saying: “Looks like a pile of untraditional sheet.”Another major difference between this recipe and a traditional fry-up was the use of an oven to cook the foodsomething you wouldn’t get over in the UK. Despite this others agreed that different or not, they’d still polish it off, if served the dish.

How to strengthen your immune system this winter

It’s that time of year where it’s cool in the morning, warm by midday and chilly again by evening time. It’s impossible to decide what to wear (layers are the only sensible option) and we’re all glued to our weather apps for indications that it might rain.

Aside from putting away summer clothes and airing out our winter wardrobes, it’s also a good time to think about strengthening our immune systems for the winter.

Here are several steps you can take to boost your immune system and protect your health this winter:

1. Eat well: Eat to boost your health and you’ll have the added benefit of strengthening your immune system. If you focus on eating a healthy, balanced diet, your immunity will benefit. Seasonal fruits and vegetables (organic if possible) are great, as are nuts and seeds.

2. Give it some spice: Several herbs and spices have antibacterial and antiseptic healing properties.

3. Add garlic: Garlic has fabulous anti-microbial properties - eating garlic (raw if you can handle it) is one of the most effective ways of improving your

immunity.

4. Hydrate: Water is one of the best ways of cleansing your body of the toxins that can drag you down and weaken your immune system.

Drinking enough water makes sure your system stays healthy and hydrated while helping strengthen your immune system.

5. Get moving: It doesn’t matter if you’re not a gym bunny or a fitness fanatic, gentle regular exercise is essential for your health. A simple half hour walk every day can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases. It can approve your mindset, your appearance and delay the ageing process while improving your overall health and boosting your immune system.

6. Sleep well: Your immune system is strengthened while you sleep, and sleep deprivation can lead to a weakened immune system. Try to get 8 uninterrupted hours of good-quality sleep if you can.

7. Stress less: Stress increases your susceptibility to illness and can weaken your immunity. Try to find a way that works for you to destress - walking, yoga, meditation,

reading, cooking or painting - something that helps take your mind off any stressful aspect of your life.

8. Less sugar: Sugar can damage your immune system as it has a tendency to cause inflammation in the body. Natural sources of sweetness such as fruit are much better for your gut.

9. Dress well: Stay warm, stay healthy.

10. Wash your hands: If one good thing came out of the covid pandemic, it’s that we’re all more attentive to hand hygiene. It’s important to keep it up, as it’s a simple precaution that can help keep germs at bay and keep you healthy.

Spanish Tyre Law

Tyres are considered amongst the most crucial safety elements of a vehicle, as they maintain contact with the road at all times, we hope, and Spanish tyre law is quite clear, your vehicle must be fitted with the correct type and size of tyre for the vehicle type you are driving and for the purpose it is being used. This means fitting the right tyres and for safety ensuring that they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

If your tyres are not the same as those listed on your ITV card, your vehicle will fail the mandatory inspection, so it is worth checking this before you go for the test.

The legal limit in Spain for minimum depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres, across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre.

If you examine the tyres, you will see something called the “principal

grooves”, the wide grooves in the tyre tread which have the tread-depth indicators located inside them. These indicators can be used as a guide to check the tread on your tyres.

For safety reasons it is recommended that you replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres.

A regular check of your tyres can help you to avoid 200 euro / each wheel in fines for having tyres worn beyond the legal minimum limit on your vehicle.

The Most Common Questions About Electric Scooters

Love them or loath them, the electric scooter has already become part of the urban fabric, an economical micro mobility solution to getting around towns and cities, but just like any other vehicle, which these scooters are, there are rules that must be followed.

Some of these rules are requirements are apparently not realised by some of the users of these scooters, but there are many more who want to know the rules, and so we will answer some of the most common questions about electric scooters.

What is a VMP?

We are talking about electric scooters, purely for the ease of description, but in actual fact the rules we are describing refer to all devices which fall into the category of VMP. A VMP is a vehículos de movilidad personal, or personal mobility vehicle. To avoid doubts, mobility scooters used by those who have mobility problems do not fall into this category.

The Director General of Traffic (DGT) also advises us that as of 22 January 2024, all VMPs that are marketed must be certified for use. Until this date it will be possible to circulate even if it is not available. Braking systems, reflectors, acoustic warning device, wheels or identification holder are some of the elements that are regulated in the manual. According to various estimates, there are about 1 million personal mobility vehicles in Spain. In 2020, 8 users of personal mobility vehicles died, 97 were hospitalised injured and 1,097 were non-hospitalised injured.

As already reflected in RD 970/2020, of November 10, which modifies the General Circulation Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 1428/2003, of November 21 and the General Vehicle Regulations, aVehículo de Movilidad Personal (VMP) is a one or more wheeled vehicle for singleperson use and propelled exclusively by electric motors (batteries up to 100 VDC and with an integrated charger up to 240 VAC input) that can provide the vehicle with a maximum speed by design between 6 and 25 km/h and that can only be equipped with a seat or saddle if they are equipped with self-balancing systems.

This definition excludes vehicles for people with reduced mobility, toys, EPACs (electrically assisted bicycles) and those vehicles typified as “L” according to EU Regulation 168/2013.

The VMPs, being self-propelled exclusively by electric motor, correspond to the ZERO emissions environmental classification and are exempt from displaying the environmental badge.

There are other technical characteristics that your VMP must have. We will deal with those in more details another time.

For the purpose of simplicity, we will continue to talk about electric

scooters in this article, but we refer to all vehicles which fall into the category of VMP as described.

Can I ride an electric scooter on the pavement?

No, it is absolutely forbidden to drive an electric scooter on the pavement. In fact, it is forbidden in all pedestrian places, so as well as pavements it includes walkways, plazas and the like, and pedestrian crossings (unless passing them as a vehicle on the road).

Electric scooters are only permitted on the road, and on bike lanes. On streets shared by vehicles and people, you are permitted to ride, but adapting the speed to a maximum of 10 km/h and always giving priority to pedestrians.

Why does the scooter not exceed 25 km/h?

Not because your scooter is defective, but because Spanish regulations, in line with the rest of Europe, determine that this is the maximum speed to circulate. If an electric scooter reaches a higher speed, it would no longer be a VMP, but a vehicle such as a moped for example. Some scooters can be adapted to achieve higher speeds, but this is not permitted.

Do I need to have insurance?

Spanish legislation does not (currently) oblige the user of an electric scooter to take out insurance, therefore, driving without insurance does not imply any type of infraction. However, it is always recommended that you take out insurance, since the price of insurance is relatively cheap, and will cover civil liability, and, optionally, theft. In the event that you are in collision with a car or another road user, the insurance will take care of the damage or injury. If you do not have insurance, you can be denounced by civil means and can find yourself in court, facing a bill for any damage caused, and the subsequent costs of the case. It is most likely that in the near future it will be mandatory for you to take out insurance if you use an electric scooter.

Can I carry a passenger on the

scooter?

No. Absolutely not. They are mono personal use vehicles, therefore, you cannot carry anyone else on the scooter. This is a very dangerous, punishable activity that can cause serious injury in the event of an incident. For your sake and that of the people you love, do not take anyone on the scooter.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

The chances of falling to the ground with your scooter are relatively high, and the impact of the head can be fatal. You have good quality helmets from €40 in any online or physical store.

The recent Traffic Law establishes the obligation for VMP drivers to use a protective helmet, in the terms determined by regulation. The DGT is already working on this regulatory development together with the municipalities and with the actors involved.

Can I go to the next town?

No, the electric scooter is a means of transport for urban use. They are not permitted on interurban roads.

Where else can I not drive my electric scooter?

Apart from pavements, you cannot go through an underground tunnel with the electric scooter.

Are there any other laws for electric scooters?

Yes, there are many, because as your electric scooter is driven on the road, you and your VMP must abide by all relevant traffic laws. That means things like stopping at red lights, not driving the wrong was down a oneway street, giving way to pedestrians at crossings, not cutting across lanes at roundabouts, stopping or giving way at junctions. The list can go on, but hopefully you get the point, the rules apply to electric scooter users as well as other road users, which, by the way, also includes the rules on not wearing headphones or using a mobile phone, and the rules for alcohol and drugs, although in the case of younger drivers, the alcohol limit is zero.

TALES FrOM THE TOP FLIGHT

75:20. That’s right. 75:20.

That was the time on the clock that I had to admit to myself that OK, Arsenal are not the same Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka, who could be forgiven if he never wanted to take a penalty again in his life, stepped up and slotted past Alisson and Arsenal led Liverpool again, this time 3-2.

He could have easily bottled itmany would have expected him to because of the shirt he was wearing. But he didn’t - and Arsenal showed, to me at least, that they have the stomach for a title run.

Don’t get me wrong - they won’t actually win it. Nobody is stopping Man City ever again by the looks of it. But Arsenal will finish secondmaybe by less than eight points and everything.

Jurgeylad spent the week talking down the fact it was his seven-year anniversary at Anfield and he’s lasted a matter of weeks after that milestone in his previous two jobs. Before that, he’d spent ages reminding Trent Alexander-Arnold is actually a good player - LOOK AT HOW GOOD HE WAS AGAINST RANGERS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD - before hooking him at halftime at the Emirates.

Funnily enough, a midweek Champions League win over Scotland’s second or third-best team didn’t mean Liverpool are back at it. Their title challenge is over before the clocks change, now trailing Mikel Arteta’s side by 14 points. But it is more than that. They look lost.

There were moments against Arsenal, of course there were moments. But spells of utter domination no longer seem to be available to this team - next to be taken off after Trent was Mo. I mean, what does that saylosing against a team about to go back to the top of the table and you take off your best-paid player who has scored a literal shedload of goals for you and replace him with Fabinho? Is anybody in the Anfield boardroom regretting asking Salah to sign that new deal?

It was one of Arsenal’s Three Gabriels that got TAA removed after 45. Martinelli tormented and showed Liverpool fans what they might be missing since Sadio went to Bavaria. Gabby Jesus stuck another one in the eye of this sudden interest in the proper number nine (even if Darwin Nunez did finally move his goal tally marginally ahead of his red card tally).

It was Jesus who won Arsenal Saka’s penalty - Thiago not realising the Brazilian’s leg was there as he swung his foot in the general direction of the ball. Was it one? Applying my battleweary “would it be a foul anywhere else on the pitch?” theory - yes, yes it was.

The Bodger and Badger defending right at the end with Virgil looking at Ali

and Ali looking at Virgil as Jesus stole in to form the filling in their hopeless sandwich summed up perfectly where these two teams find themselves - one, shell-shocked and confused as to what has suddenly gone wrong (the answer is Fabinho, by the way). The other, full of belief and chasing everything down my dog who has just seen their mortal enemy, the cat.

All that is well and good, but like I said - none of it matters, really. Pep can still start making some room in the downstairs toilet for another Premier League trophy.

Southampton were the cannon fodder tasked with trying to stop Erling Haaland before that petition finally gets him banned from earning a Premier League living. And, in fairness, it looked like they’d cracked the code as Haaland actually missed his first chance of the game - hitting a post of all things you thought you’d probably not see this weekend.

Not that it mattered - City have one or two others that know where the goal is, giving Erling time to reconfigure his coding and get just the single goal in the second half.

City have broken some kind of record - winning multiple matches by scoring three plus for the first time since some time in the 60s. Admit it, you read this column for the naileddown levels of statistics you get provided.

That might be the last we see of Ralph Hassenhuttl, equally it might not be. He didn’t seem too fussed about his future post-match, seemingly more proud of that fact that this is the first time in his 16-year management career he’s had questions about his future. He must mean since the last time he was nearly getting the boot from Southampton, possibly after the first 9-0 defeat or the second?

In fairness, Southampton didn’t play like a team that had given up on the manager so many players are alleged to want to see the back of. They ran and everything.

It took all of five minutes for Casemiro to make a difference to Man United on his Premier League debut. Just not the kind of difference you’d hope for, given the transfer fee. The ex-Real Madrid multiple Champions League winner got the ball, lost the ball and saw Alex Iwobi continue his transformation from utterly average wide man to dominant midfield powerhouse by curling it past De Gea. That Iwobi switch had to be inspired by Joelinton, no?

Antony showed the other side of United’s transfer window, equalising ten minutes later and breaking/ equalling (I don’t know, it flashed up on the TV briefly) a record to do with scoring three goals in his first three games.

And, to be fair to Casemiro, he got the hang of this Premier League thing pretty quickly - robbing Iwobi in midfield to set Ronaldo off in the oldest foot race of the weekend against Seamus Coleman. Ronaldo won by a mile and still had the energy to slide it home - might Ten Hag, you know, pick him?

Tottenham went to Brighton off the back of a very tough seven days - their much-loved fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone suddenly passing away in the

week. It says something about a guy who made the players visibly chunder in preseason that there was so much genuine sadness and emotion at the Amex.

All of which made Spurs’ win even more impressive. Harry Kane got the winner, obvs, but it was a proper Conte win - ugly, ground out, full of running and just a little bit clinical.

Conte’s Premier League bete noir, Diego Costa, got the biggest cheer at Stamford Bridge on Saturdaywhen he was subbed on the hour having caused them zero problems whatsoever.

Chelsea were always in control against Wolves who really could be in trouble this season - especially if the answer to their problems is Julen Lopetegui. I mean, he’s not even Portuguese is he?

Graham Potter seems to be settling in - and his wardrobe has certainly benefitted from that signing-on fee.

Ethan Pinnock deservedly got the man-of-the-match award for Newcastle at St James’ Park - Brentford’s central defender has had better days. Miggy Almiron still has more goals than Wolves, adding to his tally in the

5-1 win - and Bruno Guimares is already being talked of as the best midfielder ever seen in the black and white stripes. David Batty will be gutted to hear that.

West Ham are slowly getting their house in order - they beat Fulham 3-1 thanks, in part, to their big in money, big in stature Italian striker Scamacca. He fell the right side of the VAR call to give the Hammers the lead knowing full well had the ref called his handball then it wasn’t getting overturned. It’s fair to say Fulham’s bench saw it differently.

Points have finally landed for the Eagles. It looked like Leeds were on for all three points at Selhurst Park before it was Eze-like Sunday morning (or afternoon, really).

Finally, whoever fancies the England job after Southgate leaves post-World Cup might want to think again. Their Euro 2024 qualifying group of Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Malta looks a bit different to usual. Maybe tanking the Nations League wasn’t so smart after all?
