on 3 June 2017, a terrorist vehicleramming and stabbing took place in central London. A van was deliberately driven into pedestrians on London

bridge, and then crashed on borough high Street, just south of the river thames. the van’s three occupants then ran to the nearby borough Market area and began stabbing people in and around restaurants and pubs. echeverría, a Spanish lawyer and banker living and working in London, was in

When the man left the body of the officer and began to assault a woman (a French citizen who survived the incident due to echeverría’s intervention) echeverría used his skateboard to strike the

attacker, diverting his attention long enough that several people were moved to safety. he subsequently attacked a second terrorist who was also attacking a police officer. he was then stabbed twice in the back by two of the terrorists, causing his death it was announced this week that

Two arrested in Torrevieja for pretending to be builders to rob homes

national Police have dismantled a criminal gang, of which two of its members were located in torrevieja, which advertised building and masonry services on several online platforms with the intention of robbing from clients. not only did they swindle their victims by charging them money for works that they were never going to carry out, but they also took advantage of the situation to rob from the victims’ houses.

officers began an investigation when one of the victims went to the national Police for help. the victim reported that he hired the services of these people to

do masonry work, but the works were never fully carried out. not only was the man the victim a scam, but also of a robbery with force, as his home was burgled shortly after hiring the ‘builders’.

the men reportedly charged clients in advance, pretended to work or at least begin work, and later ransacked the victims’ houses. investigating officers reported that the gang would first gain the trust of victims in order that they were left alone to finish work on the property. they would then be at liberty to rob valuables from their victims.

the detainees allegedly broke into a desk and a safe, stealing

several gold and silver watches, a collection of silver coins and a collection of old books.

the gang presented itself to its victims under false identities, but even so, police managed to find two of the fake builders in the town of torrevieja and another in elda, thus dismantling the criminal gang with these three arrests.

the three detainees, of Ukrainian and russian nationalities, and aged between 32 and 40 years of age, were brought to justice as alleged perpetrators of a crime of fraud and another of robbery with force.

National Police eliminates minimum height requirement from next year

Spain’s national police this week approved new regulations for its selection process. the new regulations have eliminated the minimum height requirement for general recruitment, although it will be maintained to apply for some specialist units where “height affects the operability of the specific police work that they must carry out”.

in the past, national Police recruitment required that men measure at least 1.65 metres and women 1.60 metres in height. From 2023, the height requirement will no longer be applied, bringing Spain’s national Police in line with other

civil police forces in europe such as France, italy, the netherlands, Finland, Slovakia, Sweden, norway, Austria, ireland, the United Kingdom, romania, denmark and Germany.

Another change to the rules is that from now on, women who want to join the Police will be able to postpone their selection tests if they are pregnant, giving birth or postpartum. both women and men who must postpone their incorporation to the admission course due to pregnancy, birth, adoption or fostering of a child will be registered as trainees, so their seniority in public office will not be reduced.

Antidepressants in short supply

Alicante pharmacies are experiencing supply problems with dumirox 100 milligrams, the most widely used medicine to treat depression in adults and the elderly in the region. the drug encourages the creation of serotonin thus helping the brain to maintain a certain mental stability. For this reason, dumirox is used in people who are going through a period of depression.

Pharmacists have reassured patients that generic alternatives are available and that the States Medicines Agency has been informed of the shortage of availability of dumirox. however, pharmacies confirm that if the shortage continues over time, they recommend that the patient contact their GP to discuss the possibility of changing the treatment.

Many pharmacists encourage patients to try a generic alternative, which might have the same composition and effect, but can look different and be packaged differently, thus patients don’t often feel comfortable changing over.

Metal thieves foiled

A criminal gang which stole copper wire at sites all over Spain has been foiled by the Guardia civil. investigators estimate that around 58 tonnes of copper wire and other metals were stolen by the gang in Alicante, Valencia, Albacete, badajoz, caceres, cantabria, Avila and Madrid. 16 people were arrested as part of the investigation.

those arrested, along with a further 5 being investigated, are suspected of belonging to a criminal organisation specialising in the theft of copper wire, among other crimes. investigating officers seized five vans (one of which had been used in a robbery in Valencia), 36 kilograms of dried marijuana which had been vacuum packed, ready for sale, 20 boxes containing disassembled bicycles, 3 microwaves, 195 items of branded clothing, 5 other vehicles and other items.

officers confirmed that around 58 tonnes of copper cabling had been stolen by the gang, which amounts to 19 kilometres. of the total stolen metal, around 12 tons were recovered.

the operation began at the beginning of this year, when Guardia civil became aware that Millberry copper cable had been stolen from two Wastewater treatment Plants.

Upon further investigation, officers realised that other water treatment plants had

been targeted. officers then opened a line of investigation focused on the search for the thieves, concentrating efforts on possible points of sale of the stolen copper, and inspecting scrap yards or metal waste management centres to verify the correct recycling and treatment of this type of metal.

As a result of their investigations, officers located the car used to commit the robbery at one of the water treatment plants. continuing with the investigations, officers were able to verify that the person, living in Madrid, who used the car had regular contact with ten other people, who led a life beyond their means since none of them had an employment contract that could justify their high personal expenses.

officers also discovered that those involved made regular trips, often up to three times per week, to Alicante, toledo, Valencia and other locations to

steal copper cable from water treatment plants, agrifood companies and industrial estates.

once they stole the copper wire, they hid the metal near the robbery site, so as not to raise suspicions in case they were identified at a routine police check. they then returned to Madrid empty-handed and waited until days or weeks later when they rented a van or several vans to collect the stolen cable. once transported, they sold it to a clandestine junkyard located in cañada real, which had no signs or advertising. the scrapyard was described by police as illegal, not having any paperwork or registration with the relevant authorities.

in order to make the sale of the copper cable look legal, the thieves issued invoices with fiscal data of clients and former clients, without their knowledge or consent, on some occasions even using details from clients who had died.

Raising awareness of glaucoma for World Sight Day

eXPertS are urging people to learn about glaucoma and have regular eye checks to help protect their vision from glaucoma – one of the leading causes of blindness in the world .

According to the World health organization (Who), glaucoma is the second cause of blindness globally, after cataracts, and cases are increasing. Alarmingly, new research conducted to mark World Sight day (october 13) by Specsavers shows that almost half of the people surveyed (48%) don’t know what glaucoma is. this survey also revealed worrying misconceptions around glaucoma, with 42% of respondents not worrying about it because they think ‘it’s rare’ and 40% of respondents wrongly believing that it can be cured.

this lack of awareness and knowledge is compounded, as due to its gradual onset, many people don’t realise they have the condition before it is too late. that is why this World Sight day Specsavers Ópticas is sharing information about glaucoma and a real-life example of how glaucoma is affecting people in Spain.

What is glaucoma?

Francisco Jurado, director of Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia, torrevieja and Guardamar, says: ‘Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. it’s usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the

eye, which increases pressure inside the eye.

‘Glaucoma can lead to permanent loss of vision if it’s not diagnosed and treated early, as a customer at our La Zenia store sadly found out.’

douglas Addison, who had a family history of glaucoma and was first diagnosed with it 10 years ago, noticed he was losing his peripheral vision last year- a common sign that the glaucoma is permanently damaging sight.

he booked an eye test at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia and the optometrist found that his eye pressure was extremely high. they urgently referred Mr Addison to hospital where they confirmed his diagnosis and performed a surgical procedure to stop the glaucoma getting worse.

Unfortunately, he lost 75% of the vision in his right eye. but Mr Addison remains very grateful to the team at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia for the referral, and the surgical team who stopped him losing vision in both eyes.

Mr Addison wants to tell his story for World Sight day to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye tests, not simply to see if you need glasses, but to check the health of your eyes and protect your vision.

‘i would say to anyone who hasn’t had their eyes tested before, or hasn’t had their eyes tested for a while, please do

it. it is very, very important. Vision loss can happen to anyone, so don’t take your sight for granted.

me to A&e, i would be blind. While i did lose sight in one eye, i can lead a full life and am so grateful that with the operation and treatment my vision won’t get worse.’

How to protect your vision for World Sight Day and beyond?

approximately 1/2 hour and could save your sight. don’t be afraid to come!’

Dead animals left in streets

the opposition party in orihuela, the Partido Popular, has criticised the fact that the municipality is without a removal service for dead animals on its streets. they claim the previous contract ended more than two weeks ago and that there has been several complaints received from residents who have found the dead bodies of dogs or cats in various areas of the municipality.

PP representative Almudenabaldo said: “Unfortunately, these animals have died on the street and despite the many calls people make to the city council, the answer is always the same: we do not have service.”

the previous councillor for health for the PP, José Galiano, was in charge of managing the contract with a specialised company but that has now expired. the removal cannot be carried

out by Street cleaning or rSU as it requires a special protocol.

“For health reasons, the corpse of an animal must be collected in compliance with regulations. in addition, we cannot forget the importance of checking if it has a chip in order to notify its owners.

A dog or a cat is another member of the family and, in case of loss and unfortunately, if it is hit by a car or dies in another circumstance, it is very important to let the owner know,” explainedAlmudenabaldo.

this situation is causing many problems throughout the municipality

“so we ask the government team to solve it as soon as possible. i remind them that the Municipal ordinance in its eighth chapter states that those who see a dead animal in any public space must notify the city council, in

order to proceed to remove it in the hygienic conditions necessary for such an operation and at presentthey are not complying”.

the PP spokesman added: “of course, we are not just talking about the problem with the removal of dead animals from public thoroughfares, we are also referring to the lack of cleanliness that we have been seeing in recent months in streets, playgrounds and squares… it is a matter of public health that should be treated with the importance it deserves in order to avoid infectious outbreaks, as well as the neglected image of our municipality that is being projected.the bins are full in the morning, and i don’t think the neighbours all decide to drop their garbage bags at dawn just after the truck has passed.”

Mr Jurado says, ‘come in for regular eye examinations every two years, every year if you have a family history of glaucoma. We take every precaution to make sure that the environment in store is a safe and reassuring place to be. A full eye examination only takes

A helicopter from the most effective Provincial Firefighters consortium in orihuela Park has been mobilized to the scene, which has located the injured person in a very steep area, near the climbing wall. the man has been assisted by a sanitary and once

stabilized he has been lifted with a crane to the helicopter and transferred to a hospital.

Smart cameras installed in Almoradi

Almoradi has installed a smart traffic management system following the lead of a number of local municipalities. the 60-strong network of cameras will allow the local government and traffic planners to optimise traffic flow in realtime using live feeds and video data. the cameras also have an added benefit of acting as a deterrent to crime as they will be monitored constantly and used for public safety measures.

Local police already has the system up and running at an investment of 127,000 euros in the latest technology and monitoring is underway, with some cameras having number plate recognition software. these will

monitor the entrance and exit points to the municipality, whilst others are strategically placed to monitor traffic flow and spot possible criminal activity.

Almoradi Mayor, Maria Gomez, said: “the aim of this investment in security is to improve traffic and prevent possible infractions that may be committed to achieve a safer Almoradi.”

it is hoped that the initiative will improve the quality of life and encourage a happier co-existence between the residents of the town. the network will be extended over time as will the use of the cameras such as speed control and illegal rubbish disposal.

Monkey escapes Murcia University

A monkey escaped from the University of Murcia this week, causing chaos as it tried to cross a motorway. Motorists who saw the monkey attempting to cross over the main road alerted emergency services as the animal was putting itself in danger but also endangering motorists who were either slowing down to look at the monkey or swerving to avoid hitting it.

Given the stretch of road it was on, emergency services assumed that the monkey might have escaped from nearby animal safari park terra natura. however, as it transpired, the monkey had escaped from the veterinary college at Murcia University.

the first person to sound the alarm was a resident of Guadalupe. As soon as police realised there was a monkey on the loose, officers from Local Police, national Police, Guardia civil and

Proteccion civil were put on alert to keep an eye out for the escaped animal.

in the end, the money was spotted on the roof of a warehouse in a nearby industrial estate. A veterinarian was alerted and as he travelled to the scene, police surrounded the warehouse in case the animal tried to make a run for it.

A statement from the University of Murcia confirmed that the monkey, a baboon, had indeed escaped from the veterinary college. the University said, “ thanks to the expertise of our veterinarian, ricardo navarro it is now back on campus and in perfect condition.

“After an agreement with animal protection and health officials of Murcia city council, the mechanisms for its capture by means of an anaesthetic rifle were put in place so as not to harm the animal.”

U3A Groups Fair great success

the annual Groups Fair that was held in the cMo building at the end of September proved to be a successful event with an average of 200 visitors at any one time attending during the morning. Quite a few of the visitors opted to join the U3A association whilst also signing up to take part in a variety of the groups that were in attendance there. After all the problems of the previous few years, organisers said that they were delighted it was a good turnout.

the U3A is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the communitythose in their third ‘age’ of life.

U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one’s life (the third age) after the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility. Anyone can join torrevieja U3A and this includes people who are working part time. there is no lower age for membership.

After an informative meeting last month with councillors Lund-thomsen and Sandra Sanchez discussing road and footpath concerns and the plans for works due to be undertaken in the area shortly, this month neighbourhood Watch joins with its friends at the n332 team who will be giving a presentation on new traffic laws and the Spanish highway code. residents will have an opportunity to ask the n332 team any questions they have on driving in Spain. Please note this meeting will be on Monday the 24th due to an event at oasis on the 30th. the meeting will commence at 4.30 pm as usual.

on the 5th of october 24 members of the U3A joined a coach trip to Agost and Pucol which proved to be a great day out. the day started with a stop in Agost for coffee before going on to the Pottery Museum where the group were given a guided tour of the museum and also they had the opportunity to try their hands at making three pots - two by hand and one on the potter’s wheel. it is safe to say that there weren’t many professionals amongst the participants!

Following this event, the group then went on to elche where they had an excellent italian Menu del dia. After the meal, they continued the trip to the museum in Pucol. this was extremely interesting but sadly many of the attendees could remember some of the exhibits from their childhood!

the torrevieja U3A is a learning co-operative which draws upon the knowledge and skills of its own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. the association encourages and enables members to help each other share their knowledge, skills and experience to celebrate the capabilities and potential of its members and their value to society.

Group activities offer the chance to enjoy life, meet new friends and study many different subjects in varied fields. there is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained - the approach to learning is “learning for pleasure”.

Medieval Festival comes to Elche

the city of elche is turning back the hands of time to host a Medieval Market and Festival from 20th october to 1st november. More than 150 stalls and the shows will take over the streets and squares for the first times since the pandemic. to celebrate its return the event will be bigger and better than ever with shows and performances from leading national and international entertainers from ariel dancers to jazz musicians.

Gertrud Gómez, programmer of the Medieval Festival pointed out “this year from the department of culture, we have tried to return to the strength and spirit that the festival has always had. big names are with us, and it is true that each of them, from different disciplines, have opted to come and have

supported our proposals to be present throughout the week”.

She continued: “ there are special performances scheduled every day and details can be found on the elche town hall website. All these performances will be building up to another year the extraordinary representations of the Misterid’elx, which

are the heart of this Festival. As usual, on 28th and 29th october there will be general rehearsals at 10pm and on 1st november the performance with La Vespra at 10am and La Festa at 5pm.” tickets for the Festival program can be purchased at the Gran teatro box office or instanticket.

Man found guilty of Torrevieja shooting

A man and his female accomplice have been found guilty of murder after they shot a young woman in the head at point-blank range in torrevieja. the murder took place in december 2020.

Police investigating the murder linked the incident to a ‘settling of scores’ between drug gangs.

the murder trial concluded this week in elche court with the jury reaching a unanimous verdict that it was murder with intent, in which the victim had no chance to defend herself. the Guardia civil concluded at the time the shooting had taken place over the theft of drugs from one gang of dealers by another. the man is accused as being the main perpetrator of the crime while the woman, who also appeared in court, is being charged as an accomplice. before the oral hearing began, it had been requested that the man would be held responsible for the murder and that the female accused might be handed down a minimum sentence since she acted out of fear of the main accused. however, the jury did not find that the attenuating circumstances could be proven and therefore

it is possible she will be sentenced to prison.

the murder took place on 22 december 2020 in the Los Leandros urbanisation in torrevieja, inside a house in which the accused resided. the two accused were arrested days later in the Murcian town of Lorca, to where they had fled. the accused had admitted responsibility for the murder, although he claimed that he was trying to defend himself. on the other hand, the woman claimed that she was trapped in the situation and acted out of fear, without intervening. there was a plea bargain on the table which determined that he could be sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison, while she was initially sentenced to two years. however, the jury overturned the agreement as it did not consider it proven that

the defendant acted out of fear and that instead, she played an active role in the events. With these modifications to the verdict, the woman’s sentence could be up to seven and a half years in prison, although the judge will have the final word at the time of sentencing.

the verdict considers that the victim had no chance to escape and that she died after a bullet hit her in the head. the investigation suggested that she was talking on her mobile phone with a friend when the conversation was suddenly interrupted. the defendant claimed that he saw a gun and that is why he reacted by shooting, a theory that was dismissed on the basis of the autopsy report. the pair then fled to Murcia. officers later found the murder weapon in a nearby bin.

With both the government and the boe saying that they intend to stick to their guns, this has resulted in some choppy price action, especially for the pound and UK gilts (again). in the case of the boe, Andrew bailey made it clear that the boe intend to finish their programme of supporting the long-end of the yield curve by today (Friday). he also said that pension funds have had the time to get their collective acts together. however, in order to support flagging gilt prices, the boe have had little choice but to spend big, with daily purchases approaching around £5bn by thursday, resulting in a temporary daily increase of purchases from the boe to £10bn. this is a big chance from the small purchases they made at the beginning of the programme.

With the prosect of a ‘cliff edge’ scenario once the boe finish their purchases later today, the government have been encouraged to make concessions on their tax cuts, in order to calm markets, and avoid further turmoil once markets re-open on Monday morning. Markets subsequently rallied on the ‘hope’ that truss & co will be persuaded to re-evaluate, with both the pound and gilt prices rallying sharpy on the headlines, ahead of the US inflation data (see USd).

Whilst truss has already agreed to drop her plans to abolish the 45p tax rate, in a move that is unlikely to make too much difference in real monetary terms to the big picture, the latest concession is rumoured to be a plan to scrap the planned £18bn corporation tax cut. that is a much bigger number, and could well help to calm market nervousness, and take some more pressure off the pound. however, the discomfort from some within the tory party has led to speculation that truss and Kwarteng will need to rip-up almost all

of the entire mini-budget to keep their jobs, in an effort to save the tories flagging public support.

As we said above, the mere rumour of big changes was enough to spark a rally in gilts, and send GbP/ USd back over 1.1375, a jump of over 2.5% on the session, which isa hugely impressive move on the day.

Aside from the politics and boe, UK data has also been on the soft side, with weaker growth (-0.3%) and particularly soft Manufacturing and industrial production, further highlighting the deteriorating economic outlook.

EURO

the latest economic data in the euro area has not been too bad through this week. Granted, German inflation remains uncomfortably high at 10.9% (YoY/Sep), but there was no material decline beyond estimates in the latest report. Furthermore, region-wide industrial Production jumped 1.5% through August, well ahead of last month’s -2.3% reading, and way above expectations of around 0.6%.

Given the surging inflation in region, the talk amongst ecb members is of more aggressive rate hikes, with the uber-hawkish Klaas Knot suggesting on Wednesday that the ecb need a few more ‘significant’ rate hikes, before they reach neutral territory, but that the terminal (or final rate) is likely to be lower than that of the US. ecb president, christine Lagarde, also said in a speech this week that the ecb have begun discussions on Qt, even if she still believes that the most appropriate tool to fight inflation is interest rates, especially in this environment.

As for the single currency, the moves have been largely dictated by the other side of the pairing. having jumped from around 1.0760 to back above 1.1500, GbP/eUr pushed to test muted resistance.

Lomas de Cabo Roig to be smell free

the Public company for Wastewater Sanitation in the Valencian community has awarded the contract to complete the works to improve the orihuela costa sanitation and sewage system. the project is expected to take 12 months to complete at an investment of 5.7 million euros.

the sanitation and purification system of the orihuela costa area is made up of nine pumping stations and a treatment plant that receives wastewater through four wastewater pumping stations: Los caballos, La regia, La Zenia 2 and La Solana. during the summer, these pumping stations work simultaneously and exceed the pre-treatment project capacity, so part of the flow received by the orihuela costa goes directly to the treated water pool (between 500 m3/d and 1,000 m3/d).

the main objective of the works is to increase the reliability of sanitation by solving the capacity problems of the orihuelacostaWaste Water treatment Plant. For this reason, the sanitation system of this residential area will be connected with the surrounding basins, to divert the flows to the treatment plants located in the adjoining municipalities of torrevieja and Pilar de la horadada, which currently work at 48 percent and 67 percent of their capacity.

to this end, several pumping stations will be renovated or remodelled, and new discharge lines and collectors will be built. this improvement of the sewage and piping network will also make it possible to solve the problems of congestion and flooding that occur especially in the rainy season.

Solutions will be implemented to improve the treatment process in the orihuelacosta including the expansion of the pretreatment channels in order to improve the performance. And most importantly to residents, the construction of a new deodorisation installation, which will minimise the misery caused by the production of odours. So hopefully, no more nasty niffs around Lomas de cabo roig –locally known as smelly corner! improvements aimed at reusing water are also included,

such as the expansion of the water flow between the different phases of the process, especially between the secondary treatment and the final water disinfection process, as well as the output flow to the irrigation pond.

Juan Ángel conca, Manager of the Water Sanitation company, said: “ this is an example of the efforts made to be closer to the real needs of the southern counties, strongly affected by climatological variations and by the impact of tourism on public infrastructures.”

Ángelnoguera, councilor for infrastructures for orihuela, expressed his gratitude for solving the needs of the municipality ‘regarding wastewater and treatment with these projects that are so necessary to improve the quality of life of the people of orihuela’.

Bear takes stroll through Spanish city

Spanish police came to the aid of a brown bear whose apparent quest for food led him to stroll down the streets of a busy city in the north-western region of castilla y León.

the animal was spotted in the centre of Ponferrada in the early hours of the morning by a taxidriver, who filmed its progress around the city and who can be heard in the video exclaiming, excitedly: “it’s a bear!”

Local police confirmed the incident in a tweet later and urged people to be careful.

“early today, a taxi-driver alerted us to the presence of a bear in the centre of the city, which he filmed,” they said. “our patrols found the animal near the river and guided him towards the nearby Pajariel mountain.

Although these animals get jumpy around people, we advise maximum care be taken.”

the Fundación oso Pardo (brown bear Foundation) said the ursine metropolitan incursion was no cause for alarm.

“the video filmed by a taxidriver that the Ponferrada municipal police have posted on twitter is proving very popular,” the foundation said in a statement. “everything

suggests this was a bear headed for a nearby mountain to eat acorns (which is what all bears are doing as winter approaches), who got disoriented.”

but the wildlife nGo added that a team from the regional government was investigating whether there could have been another reason for the bear’s visit.

According to the foundation, there are about 330 brown bears spread across the northern Spanish regions of Galicia, Asturias, cantabria and castilla y León, and an estimated 70 in the Pyrenees between Spain and France.

brown bears have been a

protected species in Spain since 1973. in an effort to consolidate the bear population in the Pyrenees, brown bears from Slovenia have been introduced over the past two decades.

the bears are not the only species to have appeared in Spanish cities over recent years. Four years ago, some of the wild boar that roam the hills above barcelona were spotted near the catalan capital’s Sagrada Familia basilica and by the Mercè market.

boars have also been seen in rome and berlin, where one mischievous porker famously stole the laptop of a nudist bather.

Lack of staff and rising costs puts a stranglehold on the restaurant industry

the lack of restaurant staff is putting a stranglehold on the hostelry industry in the Alicante region, unions and industry groups revealed this week. the bar and restaurant industry is trying to cope with spiralling inflation, with business owners having to absorb extra costs in order to keep prices down and ensure customers return.

employers in the industry acknowledged they have a balancing act in front of them until easter 2023 when the next ‘high season’ arrives and more staff will be required.

Unions say that the problem isn’t that people aren’t available to work, but that the ‘convenio colectivo’ (employment conditions) is not often complied with and people are not prepared to work unless they are offered good conditions and an acceptable salary. restaurant owners say the cost of taking on employees is, in many cases, prohibitively expensive.

césar Anca, president of the Alicante restaurant Association (ArA), points out that many workers have decided not to renew their contracts after they ended in the summer: “ the renewal is very big after the high season, not so much because we have a large volume of work, but because many people decide to go on the dole when their contract runs out”.

the difficulty in finding experienced staff has forced some restaurants to hire people with no experience, according to reports from the hospitality Association of elche.

industry groups are concerned that not only are restaurants having to cope with a lack of staff, but are struggling with rising costs.

AbrecA (association of bars, restaurants and cafeterias of benidorm) via a spokesperson said this week that the catering business is facing a massive problem due to the rise in prices: “never in 20 years has rent risen so much. An increase of 10% is very significant. And to that we must add the increase in raw materials, which in one year have risen 300%. A kilo of tomatoes in September 2021 cost 0.91 euros. on the same date this year and in the same place it was 2.91. instead , we as an industry have only raised prices by 6%.” restaurant owners are also

concerned about the increase in the price of energy. Some benidorm restaurants have reported receiving bills of 12,000, 15,000 or even 18,000 per month. those who had a good summer season were able to pay, but now that things are slowing down for the winter, they say they will not have the means to keep up with spiralling energy costs. one owner said, “We must bear in mind that in our businesses it is not possible to save on consumption. We have to continue maintaining refrigerators, ice machines, coffee machines and keep fryers or ovens on.”

the hospitality Association of elche says its members have the same worries. now that winter is near, the biggest concern in the sector is the escalation of energy costs. they fear that this winter may be the last for some restaurants with many owners considering closing their doors in the face of rising costs.

In Memory show and fundraiser

Following his untimely death at just 52 years of age, friends and family of richard dobinson have been encouraging people to donate money in his memory.

A Go Fund Me page created by nichola hicks has since raised 976 euros (at time of going to press).

it is hoped that this will be increased up to and including Friday 4th november when Stevie Spit is preforming at the Smidjan Sky bar, Lomas cabo roig, where richard was manager. At the end of the evening the money will be handed over to Stevie and will be divided between the San Jose orphanage and elche children’s care home.

the money will be used to lower ceilings – to improve warmth and energy efficiency through the winter – and to install six kitchenettes in the children’s living areas to encourage living skills and independence.

San Jose oberero orphanage was founded in 1957 in orihuela and is dedicated to the education of people and the residential care of youngsters at social risk. the dedicated team of specialists look after more than 60 children up to the age of 18.

the elche children´s care home(ecch) is a registered charity managed entirely by unpaid volunteers which raises money to supplement the needs of the children and provide the things that the home would not otherwise be able to afford. every cent donated is spent directly on the everyday needs of the children.

donations help us to provide vocational training and course books and equipment for 16–18-year-olds to prepare them for when they legally have to leave the security of the home at age 18.

richard was a very wellknown and much-loved member of the community running Arrive relax travel from his home during the day and

managing the Sky bar through the afternoon and evenings. he greeted everyone with a smile and was always the life and soul of the party; he loved meeting people and being in company. he was hugely popular, had a large circle of friends, was extremely sociable and great fun to be with.richard organised events and entertainment, revamped the menu, made suggestions and changes and before long the bar was bustling with customers, much to the delight of owner Gouda. it was here his loved ones gathered for his wake and so it’s fitting that his memorial show and fundraiser should be held here too. Stevie’s performance is free to enter and begins at 8pm and all are welcome.

John Cleese to host TV news show

Fawlty Towers star John Cleese has confirmed that he will host a new show on GB News. The actor, in a radio interview on BBC Radio 4, revealed that he will be hosting a new show alongside satirist Andrew Doyle. The show, he says will encourage ‘proper argument’, warning that audiences “may not be used to hearing the sort of things I’ll be saying”.

“I don’t know much about modern television because I’ve pretty much given up on it - English television.”

He added: “Then I met one or two of the people concerned and had a dinner with them and I liked them very much.

“And what they said was, ‘people say it’s a right-wing channel [but] it’s a free speech channel’.”

Cleese has been a very vocal critic of cancel culture in comedy and so-called “woke” politics. Last year, he cancelled

an appearance at Cambridge University after a visiting speaker was banned for a doing a Hitler impression.

Cleese also walked out of a BBC interview due to what he described as the “deception, dishonesty and tone” of the conversation. However, a BBC spokesperson said at the time it had been a “fair and appropriate interview”.

GB News launched in June last year, becoming the UK’s first TV news startup for 30 years, since the launch of Sky News.

A few months ago, Cleese questioned the extent to which his soon-to-be new employer was “influenced by Russian interests”.

He told interviewers he had “kind of lost interest” in British politics in recent years after the country “sunk to the lowest intellectual level I can ever remember” during the Brexit debates.

Spain Celebrates National Day

Spain celebrated its ‘National Day’ last Wednesday with a huge military parade of 4,000 members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Guardia Civil and the Spanish Legionnaires marching along Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana.

The Día de la Fiesta Nacional, previously also known as the Dia de la Hispanidad, is a public holiday in Spain. The 1987 law that made 12th October a national holiday said it commemorates ‘the linguistic and cultural projection of Spain outside of its European limits’. In short, it commemorates the date in 1492 that Christopher Columbus ‘discovered the Americas’ for Spain.

The day is also ‘Armed Forces Day’ and 150 vehicles, and 86 aircraft were also involved in the display.

King Felipe VI, who is head of the armed forces, attended with Queen Letizia and their daughters, as well as the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and other leading politicians. As with last year, the PM was booed and greeted with shouts of ‘resign’ and ‘resignation’.

The culmination of the event was a fly-by from the Spanish

Air Force acrobatics team, the Patrulla Águila, who released a stream of red and yellow smoke to replicate Spain’s national flag across the sky. There was also the traditional parachutist who landed with the Spanish flag close to the monarch. As always, one of the highlights of the day was the Spanish Legion’s quick march and goat mascot.

Despite the tradition of the occasion, some Spanish citizens see the public holiday as a misguided celebration of colonial history, with the centuries-long colonisation of the Americas by European nations having brought violence, disease and death to indigenous people. Some political parties, particularly in Catalonia, the Basque

Country and Navarra, refuse to mark the National Day, with Basque nationalists absent for the same reason as the proindependence Catalan parties. Other pro-republic parties such as the left-wing Podemos group also largely shun the national celebrations, because it is led by the Spanish monarchy.

Despite some questioning the Columbus celebration in Spain, the suffering of native populations during that period has not received the same attention or prompted the kind of historical re-evaluation as it has, for example, in the United States, where in many places Columbus Day has been paired or replaced with Indigenous People’s Day, to switch the focus of the annual holiday.

Energy Plan finally approved

Spain has finally approved its Energy Contingency Plan with 73 additional measures that should save households and businesses money this

winter. The Ministry has kept is promise not to impose any kind of limitations on the use of energy in private homes. Users will also be given a list

of money and energy saving tips on the back of their bill and will offer a comparison to neighbouring properties.

Ground-breaking transplant for Spanish Baby

A 13-month-old baby girl has received the world’s first intestinal transplant, Spanish health authorities have announced. The baby “has already been discharged and is in perfect condition at home with her parents”, said the statement from Madrid’s La Paz hospital.

The baby received the organ via asystolic donation — from a donor at the end of their life. This method of donation means “the organ to be transplanted does not deteriorate”, said the

statement. The technique had not previously been used for the intestine because it was not thought to be possible for this organ “despite the fact that 30 percent of the candidates die on the waiting list”, said the hospital.

“The intestine is a lymphoid organ closely linked to the person’s immune system which, under normal conditions, is colonised by multiple germs,” the statement added.

This means that the risk of “rejection and the possibility of

infection” is higher than in other transplants.

Three years of research and trials by several teams at the hospital were required to establish that such an operation was feasible, it added.

Spain is a world leader in organ transplants, according to figures from the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation. It also accounted for five percent of organ donations in the world in 2021, when it has only 0.6 percent of the world’s population.

Three youngsters arrested for violent robbery

Three young men have been arrested in Orihuela for violent robbery and intimidation of minors. The accused approached

their victims demanding to use their phones. The detainees then threatened to steal it or break it if they did not give them money.

Victims were beaten and their possessions stolen. Those arrested are aged 18 to 20 years old and of Spanish and Moroccan nationality.

Changes afoot at Quality Street

Digging into a tub of Quality Street is a Christmas rite of passage for many of us, however, it’s going to be a little different this year. Quality Street owner Nestle is planning to axe its iconic foil and cellulose wrappers after 86 years - and it’s happening over the next few months.

Almost all of the chocolates in Quality Street’s signature tubs will be swapping their usual brightly coloured packaging for duller waxed paper which is recyclable. The move is a bid to make the product more environmentally-friendly, since it will prevent nearly two billion wrappers a year going to landfills.

Regardless, traditionalists may well be alarmed to know that the new packaging will begin to be phased in over the coming months ahead of Christmas. Only

the green triangle and orange will remain in their original foil dressings permanently - though during the phase-in period customers may well get a mix of new and old wrappers.

In addition, Nestle also plans to include only one weight on its tubs and tins. Previously, figures were provided for the weights with sweet wrappers (gross weight) and without (net weight), however, only the latter will be given this time aroundthis does not impact how much chocolate customers will get in their boxes, though.

Last year, the brand’s variety tin was slammed by furious customers who claimed that the 800g weight given was actually made up on 780g chocolate and 20g wrappers. In an experiment, a well-known British red-top

newspaper weighed a 600g tub and determined there was 618.9g worth of treats including wrappers and 599.9g excluding them. In the average tub the fudge is the most common of the 11 different Quality Street sweets (eight total), while the strawberry delight, orange creme, toffee penny and caramel swirl are close behind (seven). The purple one, green triangle, coconut eclair, toffee finger and orange crunch were all at five, with the milk chocolate block in the shortest supply (four). Though exact amounts of different chocolate types vary in each individual tub or tin, the total weight should still add up to the amount stated.

The new changes to the sweet wrappings will affect the brand’s cartons and pouches as well as tubs and tins.

Healthcare workforce gap could spell disaster in Europe

Without immediate action, health and care workforce gaps in the European Region could spell disaster, says a new report issued by the World Health Organisation.

The report also found that 40% of medical doctors are close to retirement age in one third of countries in Europe and central Asia.

All countries of the WHO European Region – encompassing 53 Member States across Europe and central Asia – currently face severe challenges related to the

health and care workforce, according to a new report released by the World Health Organisation. An ageing workforce is chief among them. The analysis finds that 13 of the 44 countries that reported data on this issue have a workforce in which 40% of medical doctors are already aged 55 years or older.

An ageing healthcare workforce was a serious problem before the COVID-19 pandemic, but is even more concerning now, with severe burnout and

demographic factors contributing to an ever-shrinking labour force. Adequately replacing retiring doctors and other health and care workers will be a significant policy concern for governments and health authorities in the coming years. The World Health Organisation is urging countries to act now to train, recruit and retain the next generation of health and care workers.

Another key finding of the report is the poor mental health of this workforce in the

Region. Long working hours, inadequate professional support, serious staff shortages, and high COVID-19 infection and death rates among frontline workers – especially during the pandemic’s early stages – have left a mark.

Health worker absences in the Region increased by 62% amid the first wave of the pandemic in March 2020, and mental health issues were reported in almost all countries in the Region. In some countries, over 80% of nurses reported some form

of psychological distress caused by the pandemic. The WHO received reports that as many as 9 out of 10 nurses had declared their intention to quit their jobs.

“My own personal journey through this pandemic has been a rollercoaster,” said British nurse Ms Sarah Gazzard. “I was holding a phone next to a dying woman’s ear while her daughter said her final goodbyes. That was very, very difficult for me, so I sought out some support to help me cope.”

Women should be offered menopause screening at 45

The UK’s Menopause All-Party Parliamentary Group has said action is needed to improve the situation for women going through menopause, recommending that all women be invited for a menopause checkup when they turn 45. All patients, women and men, are offered a free health screening when they turn 40, but this checks for early signs of stroke, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The Menopause All-Party Parliamentary Group said that it listened carefully to women’s experiences, including difficulties getting a diagnosis and accessing hormonereplacement therapy (HRT).

Many women had long waits or were offered antidepressants, which is against the current guidelines.

The report follows a year-long inquiry by the parliamentary group. It says that action is needed for those going through the menopause, and their families.

Experts now recommend that a health check be offered to all women in their mid-40s, as they approach the perimenopause - when hormones decline and menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats, can begin. It also said that women should have the support required and ensure necessary

care as early as possible.

Carolyn Harris MP, who chairs the group, said that there is still a taboo around the subject of menopause in many corners of society - in workplaces, within families and among friends, in education, and in the medical profession.

She also said that untreated menopause symptoms could ruin relationships and careers.

The inquiry heard a 39-yearold who suspected she was perimenopausal was turned away by her GP and told to “wait and see”.

Some 18 months later, she was “almost at the verge of collapsing, struggling to keep my usually happy marriage on track and not functioning well physically or mentally”.

The report also warns a socioeconomic divide is emerging between women able to access the right treatment and those who lose out in the postcode lottery and do not have

the financial means to seek treatment elsewhere.

Harris said: “Change is vital and we urge the new minister and government to give the menopause the attention it is due and take forward the recommendations in our report for the sake of women across the country.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “We have put women’s health at the top of the agenda by publishing a Women’s Health Strategy for England, appointing the first-ever Women’s Health Ambassador, and taking action to increase supply and reduce the cost of Hormone Replacement Therapy.

“We have accepted the recommendations of the HRT supply task force, including the continued use of Serious Shortage Protocols when appropriate to manage shortages and further exploration of NHS formularies.”

Low Emission Zones Will Become More Restrictive

Throughout this year, we have mentioned Low Emission Zones or Zonas de BajasEmisiones (ZBE). They are already present in some larger cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, but the law was approved in 2021 that dictates that all Spanish towns and cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must introduce ZBE zones before the end of this year, as reflected in the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition.

In the province of Alicante, Alcoy, Alicante, Benidorm, Elche,Elda, Orihuela, San Vicente del Raspeig, and Torrevieja, are all legally obliged to create ZBEs before the end of this year, and whereas some have started the process, others haven´t even began, with just 2 months to go before implementation.

The objective of these ZBE? To restrict and limit the circulation of vehicles to reduce the polluting footprint in cities. The local council of each city will have the power to adjust its own ZBE to its needs and tastes, although the latest Traffic Law allows a common penalty (200 euro) for all those who fail to comply with the conditions of access

and circulation.

In addition, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge published in the BOE a document of “public information period” in which they were already beginning to talk about a national regulation of these ZBE in Spain. And it is this document that should be of most concern to vehicles with label C (and B).

Vehicles are categorised in Spain by the DGT based on their year of registration. The most polluting vehicles, those in category A, do not have the right to a label. On the other side of the coin are the vehicles with the Zero label, the blue one, which do not have any type of restriction in the case of Low Emission Zones and in the case of antipollution protocols in cities.

In an intermediate place is the label C, coloured green. This category includes passenger cars and light vans with a petrol engine registered after January 2006, as well as diesel vehicles registered since September 2015. They are purely combustion vehicles, placed one step above those with the B label.

In the already existing ZBEs of Madrid and Barcelona, for example, they have a different treatment, although in the Spanish capital these ZBE areas have been operating for longer. In the Central District of Madrid, vehicles with a C label can only access if they are going to park in a public car park. On the other hand, in the District of Plaza Elíptica and in the ZBE of Barcelona they do not have any type of limitation… at the moment.

In the same way, the new ZBEs that affect the other 147 affected cities in Spain will not target vehicles with a C (or B) label in the short term, but rather those without the right to a label, the most polluting. However, the Government document to impose a single framework on ZBEs stated the following: ZBEs “will primarily affect vehicles with the most polluting potential, such as vehicles A, and, progressively, vehicles B and C”.

As you can see, vehicles with a C label are already in the spotlight, although it is to be hoped that, at the very least, nothing will happen to them in next few years. First, however, vehicles labelled B should be affected.

What Is a VMP – Technical Characteristics

We have been talking more and more about electric scooters recently, perhaps as a direct result of their growing numbers, but as well as knowing the obligations of the driver, it is important that we know what actually makes up one of these vehicles, technically referred to as VMP, or vehículos de movilidad personal, which directly translates to personal mobility vehicle.

As we have mentioned before, when we are talking about a VMP, we are not talking about such vehicles as mobility scooters used by those people who have reduced mobility. Nor are we talking about those which would technically be categorised as toys, or, in fact, as other vehicles. A VMP has a very specific set of technical characteristics.

When we are talking about the VMP, we are talking about those vehicles most commonly referred to as electric scooters, which do fall into the group, but there are others. In simple terms, a VMP has one or more wheels for individual use and propelled exclusively by electric motors with a maximum design speed between 6 and 25 km/h. If the vehicle cannot reach 6 kilometre per hour, it is classed as a toy, and not permitted on the roads. If it can go faster than 25 km/h, it would have to be registered in the same way as a motor vehicle, most likely a moped, but in some cases even as a motorcycle, although, in Spain, this is not possible for all vehicles. For those which can be registered, they require ITV, number plates, insurance and a driving licence, amongst other requirements, but again, we are only talking about the more powerful vehicles.

When these micro mobility vehicles first entered Spain, there was little legislation, that has changed and continues to evolve, giving more control over these vehicles, all in the interest of safer practices. That is why

there are now fewer larger or faster vehicles on the roads, for the reasons explained.

As of 22 January 2024, all VMPs that are marketed must be certified for use.

Until this date it will be possible to circulate even if it is not available. They will require braking systems, reflectors, acoustic warning device, and lights.

What is considered a VMP?

We have already mentioned that in order to be classed as a VMP, the vehicle can only operate at a maximum speed of 25 km/h, with one or more wheels and propelled exclusively by electric motors (batteries up to 100 VDC and with an integrated charger up to 240 VAC input). They can only be equipped with a seat or saddle if they are equipped with self-balancing systems.

What are the technical characteristics of a VMP?

As has been said before, the maximum speed at which they can circulate is 25km/h, the speed at

brakes, with a minimum deceleration of 3.5 m/s 2.

In addition, vehicles with more than 2 wheels must have a parking brake.

Personal mobility vehicles must be equipped with reflectors on the front (white), on both sides (white or auto yellow) and rear (red). In addition, the brake light must be differentiated or combined with the rear light.

For the VMP for the transport of goods or other services, they must have yellow auto side reflectors and red rear reflectors, on the edges and vertices of the load, which allow signalling and clearly distinguishing both the height and the width of the vehicle in low visibility situations.

In addition, these goods vehicles or other services must be compulsorily installed with front and rear direction indicators, popularly known as turn signals. They must also have rear-view mirrors and a reversing assistant.

Acoustic warning device for all types of VMP and in the case of merchandise or other services, they must also have a reversing warning device.

Parking stabilisation system.

In order to avoid fallen VMPs in the middle of the streets and maintain a certain order in the cities, it has been established that VMPs with less than 3 wheels must have a stabilisation system consisting of a side kickstand or centre stand while parked.

The minimum established diameter of the wheels is set at 203.2mm and they must have a rough surface so that they adhere to the ground. In no case will the use of smooth tyres be allowed.

which the engine will stop driving the vehicle. In addition, it will have antihandling systems for both speed and power.

They must have a visible information indicator that shows the speed at which it is going and the battery level.

All vehicles intended for personal transport must have two independent

Safe folding. The VMP must have a double security system so that they are well coupled while it is being carried and avoid inadvertent openings.

All VMPs must have a unique, permanent, legible and clearly located factory marking with information on the maximum speed, the serial number, the certificate number, the year of construction and the make and model.

Identifier Holder. The VMP must have a space on the back of it to carry an identification or registration label.

In addition to all these technical characteristics, the manual details other characteristics more oriented to quality (structural integrity and electromagnetic compatibility, resistance to humidity, battery protection against high temperatures, non-slip surface...)

ENTRY INTO FORCE

The resolution which dictates these characteristics entered into force on 22 January 2022, however, a transitional regime is established, as stated in section 33 of the Resolution:

All vehicles marketed before 22 January 2024 may be used until 22 January 2027 even if they do not have a certificate.

All VMPs that are marketed after 22 January 2024 must be VMP brands and models that have been certified and, therefore, appear on www.dgt.es/vmp

As of 22 January 2027, only VMPs that comply with the provisions of this manual and, therefore, that have a certificate will be able to circulate.

So it turns out battering Rangers 7-1 can mean that you’ve turned your terrible form around. Who’d have thought it? And it turns out, despite their manager’s claims to the contrary, that Liverpool can compete with their big rivals.

Mohamed Salah was merely warming up for Man City, scoring the Champions League fastest-ever hat-trick during the week. His sixminute treble was purely a starter, with Joao Cancelo his main course as the recently-very-out-of-form goal machine scored the winner for Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Being old enough, like most of you reading I would assume, to remember the days when Man United versus Arsenal was a Premier League clash full of spite, niggles, pizza and hate it was quite refreshing to see this match carry as much needle as my Nan’s sewing basket - Jurgen Klopp saw red and then was sent off after sprinting after the assistant referee with the kind of intensity he’s not seen enough of from his own team this season.

But that was then - this is now. Liverpool needed this win. It doesn’t mean they are back in a title race, far from it. They may not have 100% deserved it either, they don’t care. City had a goal chalked off after Erling Haaland, who might be starting to think Liverpool are his kryptonite, had fouled Fabinho in the build-up. Have bigger fouls been missed by VAR this season or even this weekend? Oh, yes - you could understand Pep’s reaction.

Cancelo has received many plaudits for his clever play this season but I’m telling you this - Mo Salah would not have scored that goal against a prime Nigel Winterburn or Lee Dixon, that’s for sure. Fullbacks, even City ones, still have to defend once in a while.

Guardiola had said before kick-off that he still felt that Klopp’s team were their biggest challengers for another Premier League table - maybe he is right.

contingent though. It was electric at Elland Road, eventually. A power surge kiboshed the VAR technology after a minute in Leeds’ match with the Premier League leaders and come the end, Mikel Arteta was very grateful someone stuck a quid in the meter.

With the Gunners leading 1-0, Gabriel gave away another penalty, saw red and surely Leeds couldn’t miss their second spot kick of the game? We’ll never know, as VAR got it all overturned - no pen, probably sparing Patrick Bamford further embarrassment, no red card and three points for Arsenal. They now lead the table by four points after ten gamesand you’d have got some decent odds on that in July.

Still, at least Bamford has given Gareth Southgate one less decision to lose sleep over. Bamford had an earlier chance from 18 yards which he pulled wider than Jesse Marsch’s stance. He then failed to get Gabriel sent off. He’s had better days out.

Up at Old Trafford, I’d love a penny for Ten Hag’s thoughts having subbed off Ronaldo only to see Marcus Rashford miss two chances you know would have been goals 701 and 702 for CR7.

Ronaldo looked suitably impressed, as you’d expect. I’d wager that’s probably cost Rashford a place on the plane to Qatar as well.

Mason Mount was turning a bit rubbish under Tommy T - a good reason for him to be nowhere near the England job despite his ‘people’ drip-feeding that into the FA’s consciousness this last week - but is excelling under Potter. Mind you, even with Mount’s brace, I’m not sure what Tyrone Mings or Emi Martinez were up to for his goals. Mings, for one, must be playing exceptionally badly if he is managing to be below Harry Maguire for an England spot.

Kepa is suddenly a goalkeeper again. His save from Danny Ings was incredible, but it was also one of a few. Aston Villa will feel hard done by after that - as will Stevie G if he loses his job given that they created enough chances to win four matches there.

Spurs are becoming grinders - no, not the dating app (I don’t think). Their 2-0 win over Everton was far from interesting, entertaining or expansive but Conte won’t care. Harry Kane has spent enough time around Jordan Pickford to know he’s never too far from doing something stupid and grabbed the opportunity to ‘inititate

contact’ in a way we really must start respecting as they do everywhere else.

Kane scored the penalty, obviouslyhe is not Bamford - and moved within eight goals of Jimmy Greaves in his 400th match for the club.

Ralph Hassenhuttl lives another day at Southampton - his team drew 1-1 with West Ham in a game that won’t live too long in anybody’s memory except Declan Rice’s,

Who would have thought that Gary O’Neil would (a) be in the Bournemouth dugout and (b) be unbeaten in six? Get out of there quickly, Gary - it will never be this good again. Bournemouth should have had all three points against Fulham too, as Big Mitro definitely ‘earned’ his penalty as much as Kane influenced his against the Ev.

O’Neil is getting a good reputation as an intelligent, tactically thinking coach - he’s young and English, so obviously he is now in the running for the England gig. But I am serious when I say he should get out of Bournemouth’s dugout before they give him the job - caretakers, especially in Bournemouth’s position, so rarely work well once given it full time. Quit whilst you are ahead or end up like

Darren Moore.

Signing a new deal is one thing, managing Nottingham Forest to a Premier League win is something completely different. Steve Cooper may have a stay of execution at the City Ground, but he cannot afford to lose too many more games before that new contract means even less than it probably does already.

Wolves are being linked to a glorious return to Nuno and a 1-0 win courtesy of a penalty scored by Portuguese Ruben Neves and one saved by Portuguese Jose Sa will have given the Portuguese former boss and his Portuguese agent Mendes food for thought.

Leicester City’s owners were at the King Power to watch Brendan Rodgers be told to leave by the fans after their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace. In fairness, they may as well stick with him - they are not going to get anyone better. Unless they have someone who knows where Youri Tielemens is hiding - then it might be worth giving him Brendan’s job immediately.
