‘Tropical’ nights continue

if you’re one of the many people that have had a hard time sleeping this week because of the heat, you’re not alone. the Alicante coastline has experienced unseasonably high nighttime temperatures with the mercury remaining above 20 degrees at night all week. these so-called tropical nights are not usual for this time of year. A tropical night is one in which minimum temperatures do not fall below

20ºc, according to the climatological definition by spain’s Meteorological Agency (AeMet ).

this level of heat at night “is not normal”, confirms the professor of regional Geographic Analysis and director of the climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante, Jorge olcina. however, this situation only confirms a trend that has been recorded since 2010 of a notable increase in the

number tropical nights per year. olcina has assured that we will finish out the year with over 110 tropical nights. “ this is a very striking fact because it shows the prolongation of the summer heat towards spring and autumn”, explained the professor.

A key that explains this phenomenon, in addition to the arrival of air from

north Africa, saharan air, is the heat accumulated in the Mediterranean seawater, which at this time of year is still above 24ºc. “ this temperature is also quite abnormal, but it is a trend that is also being registered in the last decade in the temperature of the seawater off the coast of Alicante”, added olcina.

the transition from summer to

autumn is increasingly drawn out and the warm weather is lasting later into the year, including at night time, as we have seen this week.

in recent years we have experienced tropical nights here and there in october and even in november. however, this last week is being described by weather experts as “quite exceptional” due to several consecutive days of minimum nighttime temperatures above 20ºc in much of the Alicante coast.

For those who are looking forward to putting on their winter pyjamas, the director of the UA climatology Laboratory advises not to get your hopes up just yet: “ there are no sudden changes in the weather in the remainder of the month of october. on the contrary, we are going to continue with a trend of anticyclonic days and very pleasant weather”.

in fact, the seasonal models are indicating an autumn with temperatures above normal, as we are currently experiencing, followed by a mild winter.

Pavement repairs underway in Torrevieja

torrevieja’s councillor for Quality of Urban services, sandra sánchez, announced that repair work has commenced on different sections of pavement throughout the town. in addition, the various ‘vados’, vehicle entry and exit licenses, are being updated with the overall aim to improve pedestrian routes.

sánchez explained that the works consist of repairing sections of pavement in some cases and, in other cases, complete replacement. be used. in total, about 1,000 linear meters will be repaired or replaced in several locations, including

- Urbano Arregui, opposite centro de salud del Acequión. calle bergantín, 10. calles Afrodita and Ariadna, Avenida torreblanca. calle Geranios,

- Avenida tirso de Molina at calle Gabriela Mistral.

- Avenida delfina Viudes, calle obenque, calle estay.

sánchez also revealed that along with repair work, ‘vados’ will be updated with 24 being removed.

Foreign residents earning less than ever

Almost half the foreign residents of the Alicante province have incomes that are below 50% of the average wage. the socalled economic inequality between spanish and foreign residents is becoming more and more evident, claims a recent report. Just under half of all non-spanish nationals living in the Alicante province are on low income - earning just 50% of the provincial average wage. Figures issued by the national statistics institute (ine) revealed that while among the foreign population, 47.7% of workers are

earning well below minimum wage, among spanish workers, this figure sits at around 16.6%. the data, which corresponds to 2020 and is the latest available, reveals that the median income in the Alicante province is €13,650 per year. the ine figures reveal that almost half of foreign workers earn less than this amount per year. the situation had been slightly improving in recent years, but the most recent data shows how the coronavirus pandemic slowed down the progress towards equality of income

between spanish nationals and foreigners. in 2018, the percentage of foreigners with incomes below half the national median in the province was 48.4%, and by 2019 it had fallen by 1.1 points to 47.3%. however, in 2020 it fell back to 47.7%. At a local level, this phenomenon has occurred in most of the larger municipalities in Alicante.

Most areas reported a drop in gross income per inhabitant with benidorm reporting the greatest overall drop with average wage going from €22,742 to €20,333.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and is due to appear in court on Monday. the two men were involved in a fight outside the disco, one punched the other and the victim fell to the

ground and died. the incident occurred at around 6.30am on saturday.

two videos recorded by eyewitnesses have shed some light on events before the tragedy. the clips show that the victim (26) was being thrown out of the disco by copity’s security staff who accused him of having several confrontations in the disco, saying “You’ve already hit three people.”

other videos of the fight are currently being examined by investigating officers.

After the victim was knocked out, the suspect fled the scene.

Paramedics were called and tried to revive the 26-year-old but without success, he was pronounced dead at the scene. the events around the actual death are still being investigated but it is known that the suspect was found hours later by police.

Health department head resigns

Pilar santos has resigned as head of torrevieja health department, just one year after it returned to public management, with her replacement already being named as Jose cano. hospital management would have people believe that the service has improved during those 12 months. According to its figures, during these first 12 months after the reversal, the department’s staff has increased from 1,212 to 1,889 workers and services such as psychiatry, oncology, traumatology, nephrology, paediatrics, pathology, neurophysiology, social work and pharmacy have been reinforced. A state-of-the-art ct scan valued at 470,000 euros has been incorporated and the heart department is now open from 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday. however, according to local media and patient anecdotes, the local medical service has been plagued by staffing issues and ever-increasing waiting lists since private management ended. operations have been cancelled to a lack of surgeons and some departments have no specialist consultants. Sentence reduced by half for murder of 71 year old British woman

the Provincial court has issued a revised sentence of 14 years and nine months in prison to the man found guilty of beating a 71-year-old british woman to death after stealing 550 euros from her at her home in Granja de rocamora, near catral.

the trial had already been heard but the verdict was overturned by the superior court of Justice. in the first trial, the accused was sentenced to 25 years in prison. in this, the retrial, he was sentenced to 13 years for murder and 21 months for violent robbery.

the sentence also states that the defendant, of dutch origin, must compensate one of the two children of the victim, Margaret, with 52,000 euros and repay the 550 euros stolen on the day of the crime. Another daughter of the victim is deceased so the ruling says that the accused will have to compensate the grandchildren of the victim, also with a payment of 52,000 euros, if they request it during the execution of the sentence.

the murder took place between nine and ten at night on november 16, 2019 in a house in Granja de rocamora

where the 71-year-old british woman lived alone. the defendant had known the victim since 2015 and had come to her house on numerous occasions to carry out plumbing, electrical and painting works. Likewise, the woman had also previously lent the man money which he had always paid back. therefore, the woman was not surprised that he came to the house one saturday night to ask for money and so, she opened the door of her home.

the defendant, who travelled in a car driven by a friend, entered the woman’s house and asked her for 50 euros. the woman agreed and after giving him the money that she had taken from a purse where she had 600 euros in cash, she turned her back on him and went to the kitchen. At that moment he grabbed the purse, took hold of the victim’s neck and threw her to the kitchen floor. According to the details laid out in the sentence, he dealt her “numerous, repeated, intense and forceful blows to the face, head, neck and chest.”

the ruling added that he then grabbed her neck “strongly

compressing and stretching it.” As if the cruel attack on a woman of 1.56 metres and 57 kilos of weight was not enough, the defendant - who measures 1.85 metres and weighed about 103 kilos - placed one of his knees on the neck and chest of the victim, “pressing and squeezing her hard and intensely.” the victim suffered multiple cranial and rib fractures, a sternum fracture and cardiac rupture and the complete section of the spinal cord, injuries that caused her death. After murdering her, the defendant fled the scene, leaving the woman’s body on the kitchen floor.

Final Salary Pension –How safe is yours?

the on-going turmoil in the UK continues to play havoc with the financial markets with stocks and shares plummeting and the pound losing ground against the major currencies.

the volatility in the gilts market caused a real scare amongst pension companies recently with many companies facing the prospect of not being able to meet their commitments. this could have resulted in certain pension providers becoming insolvent and the scheme being absorbed into the UK Government Pension Protection Fund.

however, pension fund managers breathed a sigh of relief at the bank of england’s £65bn emergency intervention to stabilise UK Government bonds (known as gilts).

once a pension provider enters the Pension Protection Fund, members lose their right to transfer to a Personal invested Pension. Also, depending on your age, you could see a reduction in your pension payments.

to avoid this happening to your “final salary scheme” you can request a cash equivalent transfer value in order to secure your pension pot. Moreover, you won’t have to worry anymore about the fund’s ability to pay your pension throughout your retirement.

Torrevieja opens four charging points for electric vehicles

torrevieja town hall has presented four new recharging points for electric vehicles, each with two chargers. the four are semi-fast stations that can serve two vehicles simultaneously and will be free to use until the approval of the fiscal ordinance that regulates them.

the mayor, eduardo dolón, together with the councillor for infrastructure sandra sánchez, and the commercial manager of energy provider iberdrola in Alicante and Murcia, Juan carlos brotons, were present at the launch event.

the new facility represents an investment of 4,235 euros for drafting the project and technical management, and 46,295.81 euros in the execution of the civil works necessary for assembly, connection, communication, supply and commissioning with remote connection.

the four locations are as follows:

calle caballero de rodas, nº 27.

calle Ucrania (car park of torrevieja hospital)

- Avenida Monge y bielsa (car park of “ tavi y carmona” sports palace)

calle Mayor at Plaza encarnación Puchol in La Mata.

in order to access each charging station, users need

to make a prior reservation through the iberdrola Public recharge app (the only app in spain that incorporates verified information on all electric vehicle chargers, both those of iberdrola and those of other operators), which is available both on Android and ios. the iberdrola app also allows users to geolocate recharging points with your mobile phone, book and pay - although in the case of torrevieja charging will be free for a limited time until the local legislation is signed off.

the recharging stations are type 2 (semi-rapid) with the possibility of simultaneously charging two vehicles, through two sockets with a maximum power of 22 Kw in each, with a limited maximum recharging time of 2 hours for each vehicle.

As an example, one hour of recharging would be equivalent to 100 km of autonomy. Also add that the parking spaces for recharging will be exclusively for the parking of electric vehicles during the time of use, parking being prohibited once the 2 hours are exceeded.

As a ‘novelty’ each one of the supply boxes for the recharging stations displays different landscapes from around torrevieja, such as the salt mountains or La Mata natural park, as well as the town hall logo.

the mayor stressed that the commissioning of these first recharging points aims to promote electric mobility, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions and continuing to advance in achieving the sustainable development goals set out in the 2030 Agenda.

GBP / EUR U P dat E

Whilst this week has been far more comfortable for sterling and gilt traders, the same cannot be said for Liz truss and her government. After much intense speculation, truss resigned as PM yesterday (thursday) afternoon, marking the end of the shortest serving term as british PM in history, at just 45 days.

truss said that she could not ‘deliver the mandate she was elected, and had notified the King that she was resigning as tory party leader.’ truss also said in her speech that she expects a new leader to be announced within the next week.

Leading into the announcement, Wednesday had been particularly tough day for the government, with home secretary suella braverman quitting, after sending a confidential email from her private email, coupled with reports of tory MP’s being ‘manhandled’ during a vote on fracking. of course, all of this comes after truss was forced into publicly apologising (several times) for the mini-budget tax cuts and energy price cap fiasco, which fledgling chancellor Jeremy hunt was forced to unwind in order to stabilise markets, in a bid to avoid possible further sterling and gilt market meltdowns.

speculation had mounted that truss would be resigning, after an unexpected meeting with the head of the 1922 committee, sir Graham brady, earlier in the day. the 1922 committee decide on the leader of the tory party. Amongst the front-runners for the job are former PM boris Johnson and his chancellor, rishi sunak. Aside from the ongoing political drama, the latest UK inflation data for september saw headline inflation jumping back over 10% (YoY), which has added to the belief that the boe will go for a larger rate hike at their next meeting. in further worrying signs for the economy, the latest UK retail sales (released Friday) declined by 1.4% through september, against an expected drop of 0.5%.

As for sterling and UK gilts, well after a turbulent few weeks,a sense of normality has ensued, with daily ranges for the pound reverting to far more digestible levels. GbP/Usd has therefore traded within a 1.1150 – 1.1440 range, and GbP/eUr has also gyrated between 1.1400 – 1.1600 throughout the week. the daily changes in key UK gilt yields have also reverted

to a far more ‘normalised’range. of course, the fluid politicalbackdrop still has the potential to impact the short-term profile for the pound, but in the longrun markets will likely pay far greater attention to the fiscal outlook, ongoing boe movesand what is happening at no11, than the comings and goingsnext door,at no 10.

EURO

the latest euro area inflation report highlighted that over half of the countries in the block now have inflation that exceeds 10% (YoY). the latest hicP inflation saw headline inflation near 10% for the region as a whole, jumping from 9.1% in August. energy prices continue to dominate the increase, magnified by russia’s decision to limit gas supplies to the region.

the european commission have proposed a eUr40bn package, aimed at helping small and medium-sized businesses and look to ‘address energy poverty through support to vulnerable households.’ At the time of writing, eU leaders were meeting to discuss the package.Germany have unveiled their own eUr200bn plan to combat the energy crisis and soaring costs, with relief measures including a price cap on gas, and a tax on windfall profits for energy companies.

elsewhere, the latest ZeW survey highlighted how the current situation has deteriorated to -72.2, but with a pleasant upside boost to economic sentiment, which rose from -61.9 to -59.2.

Given surging inflation in the region, it seems highly likely that the ecb will go with a bold rate hike again at next week’s meeting. Another75bps hike looks the order of the day, according to analyst estimates, with 75% of economists polled by reuters going for a repeat of the last ecb meeting. interestingly enough, only two economists polled favoured a 100bps hike, with the remainderopting for a 50bps move.

As for the single currency, well the broad 0.9600 –1.0000 range in eUr/Usd looks well-established for now. if anything, the euro has trended slightly higher through this week, but next week’s ecb meeting is far more likely to generate some serious intra-day volatility.

Property purchases by foreign buyers increase by 52.7% in Spain

A report into the spanish property market during the first six months of 2022 has revealed a 52.7% jump in the number of foreigners buying homes in spain, compared to the first half of 2021. the figures from the General council of notaries also reveal that foreign buyers accounted for 20.3% of home sales in spain in h1 2022.

britons are leading the charge when it comes to appetite for spanish property, accounting for 10.7% of all purchases by foreigners. they were followed by German buyers (10.2%) and buyers from France (7.7%).

While overall property purchases by foreigners jumped by 52.7% in h1 2022, some regions experienced even greater increases. Foreigners bought 78.0% more homes in the costa blanca than they did during the first half of 2021 and 62.3% more in the costa del solthe General council of notaries’ figures also show that the average price per square metre of homes purchased by foreigners rose by 10.6% in the first half of 2022 (compared to h1 2021).

spanish home builder taylor Wimpey is experiencing the increase in demand first-hand,

with a number of developments either recently sold out or with just one or two properties left.Marc Pritchard, sales and Marketing director at taylor Wimpey said, “ the data emphasize just how strong demand for spanish property is from foreign buyers. this is something we’re seeing play out in each of the regions in which we operate, where reservations are above pre-covid levels and

where many of our developments are selling out fast.”

he continued, “ this year has been very busy and the pace of reservations continues to be strong as we head into the winter months. owning a home in spain delivers so many benefits for foreign buyers and new trends around remote working and the growth of freelancing are supporting more families to enjoy spending time here.”

Fake marine arrested for million euro ‘love scam’

A man who pretended to be a marine was arrested for swindling a series of women out of more than a million euro, including an Alicante woman who is believed to have paid the man in excess of 800,000.

Alicante national police made the arrest last week as part of the dismantling of a network of cybercriminals who scammed over a million euro from 20 victims across europe via a ‘romance scam’. the deception involves the men using social media and internatet dating sites to make women fall in love with them and then empty their accounts using a series of excuses and reasons to ask for money.

the investigation began after the economic and Fiscal crime Unit (UdeF) of the Alicante Provincial Judicial Police brigade, received a complaint from an Alicante woman who was scammed out of 835,000 euros by a man purporting to be a Us marine.

16 people from the network of cybercriminals have been arrested, 15 in Palma de Mallorca and one in Malaga. Police say it is one of the largest operations in the fight against cybercrime in the european Union.

According to the Police, the

criminal gang used a multitude of false profiles on dating sites and social networks and through them contacted a woman from Alicante. they gradually gained her trust over years and led her to believe that she was having an online relationship with a Us Marine stationed overseas. the ‘marine’ even made several video calls to the victim, making

she also sent a package with a large amount of cash through a courier company, according to the Police.

Agents from Alicante UdeF tracked the victim’s money for months and verified that they were dealing with an organization made up of cybercriminals specialized in online deception throughout europe. in fact, after the complaint in Alicante, the national Police has so far located about twenty victims in Lithuania, Germany, italy, romania, Luxembourg, Finland, Poland, slovakia, croatia, as well as in spain. the fraud far exceeds one million euros and the police investigation is still open.

her believe that they would one day meet in person. during their ‘relationship’ he used all kinds of pretexts and excuses to request money, such as payment of fees, certificates, plane tickets, security for his life and bribes, among other things.

in addition to giving the man all of her life’s savings, the Alicante woman even applied for several personal loans to be able to get more money to transfer it to the man. the woman made up to 75 bank transfers, mostly to accounts in Malaysia, indonesia and spain.

tracking money swindled from the woman from Alicante led the investigators to Malaga, where they arrested one of the leaders of the organization at the beginning of May. the agents also searched his home and seized computer equipment that allowed the investigation to continue further.

the ringleader is a 27-yearold nigerian who directed the other 14 detainees, who were apparently “mules” in charge of receiving the money from the various love affairs and sending it to Malaysia and indonesia.

I am single by choice. The rest of my family, siblings, cousins etc have had relationships, and hordes of children. Birthdays and Christmas is becoming a real problem for me. I work but only have an ordinary job in admin, and it isn’t highly paid. With the recent increases in the cost of living, I am finding it a struggle to survive myself. I have always been a generous person in buying gifts for nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters etc, and now great nieces and nephews have come along, the cost is crippling me. Last year I took out a loan to pay for Christmas, and I am still paying it off. I don’t want to sound mean, but even a card these days cost over 3 pounds, and I am making myself sick with worry because I know I can’t do it anymore. But it’s telling everyone that is the biggest stress; I am worried they will think me mean.

What you shouldn’t do is go in to debt. You must speak to your mum and dad and

extended family and explain the situation to them? Any loving family member should understand the pressure it is putting on you. I wonder how many of them might secretly feel the same way with the cost-of-living biting; perhaps

they will relish putting a curb on the amount of spending, or even cutting it out altogether. In these circumstances, where there are large families, I always suggest a secret Santa type of arrangement, and this can also work for birthdays too - a collective present.

Eagle Owl rescued in Benejuzar

An eagle owl is recovering after being recused in benejuzar by an expert falconer, evaristo rodríguez, a member of the hunting Federation of the Valencian community. the eagle owl was spotted by an eagle-eyed farmer in an irrigation pond in the sierra de benejúzar. the bird was in the water and seemed unable

to get out, despite trying several times. its wings were so water-logged it was unable to fly, and the banks of the pond were steep and slippery. there was nothing for the birds claws to ger hold off and it was becoming increasingly tired and was near exhaustion.

evaristo rodríguez was called to the scene and expertly

recued the bird and is now supervising its recovery and taking care of it until the owl can be released back into its natural environment, which is expected to be quite soon. the bird is a female eagle owl, which is larger than the males, exceeding 70cm in size, 160cm in wingspan and 2.5kg in weight.

No covid restrictions for non-EU visitors

entry requirements to spain from outside the eU have been relaxed – travellers will no longer have to show a ‘covid certificate’ upon arrival.A european Union regulation brought in last year meant an obligation to show either proof of having been vaccinated, of having had covid within the previous six months, or a negative Pcr or antigen test taken not more than 72 and 24 hours before entering a country respectively.

the aim was to gradually remove barriers to free movement throughout member states and the wider eeA, although countries were given authority to retain restrictions on entry where public health concerns justified doing so.

Where this was the case, national governments were instructed to ‘not go beyond what is strictly necessary to safeguard public health’, and to lift the restrictions as soon as the country’s epidemiological situation permitted – with the focus, in this respect, mainly on hospital admission figures rather than the percentage of ‘positives’ among the general population.

From 1st June this year, spain dropped ‘covid certificate’

requirements for the schengen zone and the eU, including norway, iceland and switzerland. however, this remained in place for non-eU countries – which, from early 2021, included the UK – and arrivals from nations still requiring a ‘covid passport’ were also warned they may be subject to random health checks.A decree that came into effect on

october, though, no health checks or ‘covid certificates’ will be needed for anyone entering the country from outside the eeA, according to a notice published in the state official bulletin (boe). the changes allow entry to spain without any covid-related restrictions – but it includes a proviso that these limitations may be enforced again in the future.

A reactivation of international health-related control measures or a worsening of the covid pandemic would mean these requirements were instantly put back in place, the boe notice states.

Spain, France and Portugal gas pipeline

spanish Prime Minister Pedro sanchez has announced that spain, France and Portugal have agreed to build an energy pipeline linking the iberian Peninsula to the rest of europe, reviving a project long-resisted by Paris.

the new project, which Pedro sanchez dubbed a Green energy corridor, would replace an earlier plan dubbed Midcat that emerged a decade ago but was dropped in 2019 over regulatory and funding issues.

of the continent.

With energy prices soaring, Madrid pushed hard for the revival of the project, with the full backing of berlin, which has seen russian gas deliveries via a key pipeline shut off for the indefinite future.

April 1 this year had established these requirements for all international arrivals, but two months later, only continued to apply for countries not in either the eU or the schengen.

Land borders were exempt, except those with Morocco in the case of the city-provinces of ceuta and Melilla, but travellers by air and sea were affected.

starting from Friday, 21st

separately, but also linked to non-eU arrivals, anyone from the UK who lives in spain must carry their residence document with them and proactively show it to border officials at the same time as their passports.

non-resident british nationals travelling to spain – even if visiting family who lives there, or who plan to stay in a holiday home they own – will have their passports stamped upon arrival and departure.they are not permitted to spend more than 90 days in any 180-day period within the schengen zone, which spain forms part of.

but, with russia withholding gas deliveries to most of europe in reaction to sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, there has been a resurgence of interest in a link to bring in much-needed supplies from spain to the rest

“We have agreed to… a new project to be called the Green energy corridor to link the iberian peninsula to France and therefore to the european energy market between barcelona and Marseille,” Pedro sanchez explained on his arrival for an eU summit on the energy crisis.

the Prime Minister said that the pipeline would move hydrogen and gas “during a transition period needed by the

european energy market.” spain currently has six liquefied natural gas (LnG) terminals for processing gas that arrives by sea which could help the eU boost imports with a better link.but it only has two low-capacity links to France’s gas network, which has connections to the rest of europe.

Southern European summit to be held in Spain

A summit grouping nine southern european countries that was postponed after spanish Prime Minister Pedro sanchez caught covid, will take place in early december, he announced, whilst in brussels recently.

the euroMed 9 - which groups croatia, cyprus, France, Greece, italy, Malta, Portugal, slovenia and spain - will take place in Alicante on 8-9 december,

Pedro sanchez said.

the Prime Minister confirmed having covid several days after flying back from the Un General Assembly and was still testing positive a day before the 30thseptember summit, prompting its postponement.

nine heads of state and government had been due to attend, including French President emmanuel Macron and italy’s outgoing premier

Mario draghi as well as european commission President Ursula von der Leyen and eU council President charles Michel.

the summit is expected to focus on the energy crisis facing europe as a result of russia’s war in Ukraine.

the euroMed group was created in 2016 to strengthen cooperation between Mediterranean and southern eU member states.

New water pipes for Punta Prima

The Department of Infrastructure is to renew several sections of drinking water pipes in Punta Prima. The project will also include the installation of new metering valves, and connections and distribution system.

The work will focus on the renovation of pipes in Calle Bergantín and the interior streets that exist between this road and Calle Fragata, as well as those of Avenida del Mar and the streets that join it.

The project report includes the need to renew the drinking water pipes, since the existing ones are made of asbestos cement and have an average age of 30 years,

which increases the risk of breakdowns in the network.

In addition, the replacement of these sections is planned because of the different diameters in the pipesthat run under the sidewalks, which does not guarantee the pressurised flow of hydrants

and fire-fighting installations.

The works have a budget of 149,832.32 eurosand will be co-financed 50 percent between the Diputación de Alicante and the Ayuntamiento de Orihuela. It is believed that the project will be completed in three months.

App to prevent car theft in Spain

National telecoms giant Telefónica has created an anticar theft phone App for less than the cost of a glass of wine per month. Movístar, Telefónica’s mobile and internet brand, has joined forces with one of Spain’s key home security alarm system providers, Prosegur, and with the communications corporation’s in-car technology provider Net4things, in setting up its new ‘thief alert’ or those who already subscribe to the company’s motoring technology service Movístar Car, which costs €3 a month, the Movístar Car Protect App comes in at an extra €1.95. It allows the customer to name people who have their

permission to use their car, logging their details into the App via bluetooth connections with these permitted drivers’ own devices. This means alerts will not be sent if a person with the car-owner’s permission unlocks or starts the vehicle.

But if a person not registered on the App attempts to drive or enter it, or any other ‘unauthorised’ or ‘suspicious’ movement involving the vehicle is detected, the owner will receive an immediate notification either via text message, automated phone call, or an alert through the Movístar Car Protect App itself.

Then, the car-owner will

have two minutes to either cancel the alert or tap an option confirming the vehicle use or entry as ‘suspicious’. If the user confirms it could be a theft, an immediate alert goes through to Prosegur, a company which operates intruder alarms linked to security guards or police headquarters.

This then means police detectives will be on the case within just two to three minutes of the car-theft attempt – quick enough that, even if a thief had jumped straight in and driven off at high speed, they would still be within the local area, or no farther than a 10-kilometre radius at worst.

IMF says Spain will escape recession

Spain will be one of a small number of countries that will escape a ‘technical recession’ by next year, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).During 2023, the country will experience ‘strong growth’, with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expected to rise by 1.2 percent, according to FMI director for Europe, Alfred Kammer.

Even though this is a far more cautious estimate than the previous – which was 2 percent - the forecast figures still mean Spain will be the fastest-growing economy in the Eurozone next year, Kammer reveals.

“Spain is one of the countries for which we are not expecting a recession next year – a time when it will experience strong growth,” Kammer explained.

Even then, in the same way as many of its neighbouring countries, Spain will continue to be held back by ‘weakened demand’ and ‘falling consumer confidence’ which started with the pandemic and has continued with the more recent price-led inflation, fuel and supply crisis and the conflict in Ukraine.

But sub-director for the FMI’s Department of Research, Petya

Koeva Brooks, admitted that the 1.2 percent forecast for Spain’s growth was in fact a little overcautious – it had been calculated before GDP second-quarter results were published.

For the months of April to June inclusive, says Ms Koeva Brooks, Spain ‘exceeded expectations’ by showing 1.5 percent GDP growth.

“If we were making these forecasts for 2023 now, in light of this new information, we would probably be releasing even higher figures,” she says.

Kammer’s verdict is a little more prudent, however: He warns that Spain will not fully recover its economic activity

affected by the pandemic until early 2024.Although anecdotal evidence, and figures by individual sectors locally and regionally, seem to show Spain is almost back to business volumes of 2019 or even exceeding these, the economy will take time to catch up.

“The country took one of the biggest hits of all developed nations in 2020, given its high exposure to industries that involve ‘people presence’ –such as tourism and hospitality – which were almost entirely out of action that year and part of 2021 due to lockdowns and restrictions on travel and movement”, Kammer concludes.

Most popular names revealed

The National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures revealing the most popular names in the Valencian Community and Alicante province this week.

María and Antonio remain the most popular names among Valencians, along with classics such as Francisco and Carmen and the compounds of Mª Dolores and Mª Teresa. Some new names have also made the ‘favourites’ list with parents over the last ten years choosing names such as Martina, Paula, Daniel and Hugo.

Antonio and Mª Carmen are once again the most common names across Spain, followed by Manuel (who unseats José) and María.

In the province of Valencia, the most common name is also Mª Carmen, with 35,283 Maricarmens registered there, followed by María (35,020), Carmen (25,436), Josefa (19,597) and Amparo (18,713).

Among Valencians born since 2010, Lucía, María, Paula, Sofía and Martina lead the list in this order; between 1,900 and 2,700 girls bear each of these names.

Again María (23,073), Mª Carmen (22,143), Josefa (17,616), Carmen (15,293) and Mª Dolores (12,034) are the most popular in the province of Alicante. Lucía, María, Sofía, Paula and Martina are the most popular among younger girls, that is, those born in the last decade, with over 1000 each.

Similar names are popular in Castellón: María (7,866), Mª Carmen (7,253), Carmen (6,168), Mª Teresa (3,795) and Mª Dolores (3,666) are the most popular with Lucía, María, Martina, Sara and Paula top among children’s names with around 500 to 1000 each.

Among men, Antonio and Francisco are the favourites in the province of Valencia with a total of 31,348 and 30,457, ahead of Manuel (22,181), David (19,889) and Rafael (19,004).

Daniel, Alejandro, Adrián, Lucas and Álvaro are the most popular among young children, with between 1,700 and 2,200 each.

Antonio also leads the ‘top’ five of Alicante, with a total of 28,849, followed by José (26,535), Francisco (23,354), Manuel (19,218) and José Antonio (13,145). Daniel, Hugo, Alejandro, Pablo and Adrián are top for those born in the last ten years, all with more than a thousand.

And in the province of Castellón, Vicente (6,605), again Antonio (6,477), also Francisco (6,032), David (4,633) and Carlos (4,225). Surprisingly, Marc tops the list of male children’s names, ahead of Hugo, Pablo, Daniel and Álex, with between 300 and 600 each.

At the national level, there

are only two names left with more than 600,000 people: María Carmen and Antonio. There are 6.17 million women named Maria and 2.71 million men named José. However, both names maintain their downward trend.

Only Laura increases in popularity among classic names while names from continents such as Africa or America are spreading. Names from countries such as Argentina, Libya, France, Greece or India are often accompanied by a ‘Maria’.

Some very widespread names in the past have seen their popularity decrease over time, such as Manuela or Mercedes, very popular among those born until the 1970s but today don’t even make the top 50.

In the case of those born in the 21st century, the most frequent names of men born since the year 2000 are Alejandro, Daniel, Pablo, David, Adrián, Álvaro, Hugo, Javier, Sergio and Diego, and among women Lucía, María , Paula, Alba, Sara, Laura, Marta, Carla, Claudia and Sofia.

The oldest names on the INE’s current record are Aphrodisia (84.8 years), Acracia (82.3), Parmenia (81.8), Fraternidad (81.7) and Domina (81.0); and in the case of men, Acindino (79.1), Frumencio (78.1), Vitores (76.5) and Progreso (76.0).

On the opposite end of the scale, Vaiana, with 1 year, followed by Cattaleya (1.9), Cataleya (2.1), Khloe (2.1) and Kataleya (2.1), and in men the youngest name is is Liam Gae (1.9) followed by Isco (2), Gurfateh (2) and Koa (2.2).

A characteristic of ‘post-

millennial’ names is that there are few compounds and, above all, that they are short names.

Among the ‘top’ ten male and female only two have more than six characters: Alejandro and Claudia. Very short names such as Ana, Eva, Noa, Mar and Ane, among women, and Pau, Jon, Pol, Leo and Jan among men, are gaining popularity, especially since the beginning of this century.

Among the 20 “newest” female names to enter the Spanish statistical records, there are some names inspired by the “Game of Thrones” series, such as Arya, Daenerys or Khaleesi. Short names such as Enzo, Dylan or Thiago for men and Chloe, Mia, India or Fe, for women, continue to prevail.

Across Spain, less common names include Abundio (458) or Restituta (169). However, 11 million people share the same name and surname with at least one other person.

As for the most frequent surname, García appears (either as a first or second surname) with 1,462,923 in first place, Rodríguez, González, Fernández, López, Martínez, Sánchez, Pérez, Gómez and Martin make up the rest of the top ten.

The García surname is the most frequent in 32 provinces followed by Fernández, Rodríguez and Martínez.

The INE study also revealed some “typical” surnames of a province, such as Berenguel (Almería), Benjumea (Seville), Pujol (Barcelona), Caamaño (Coruña), Sempere (Alicante), Córcoles (Albacete) or Llamazares (León).

Blood pressure worries with two drinks a day

According to a study, more than two alcoholic drinks a day can raise your risk of high blood pressure. Around a third of all adults are thought to have high blood pressure, although many of them might not know. If it gets too high, it can put extra strain on your organs. And if left untreated this can result in serious conditions such as heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.

As with many medical conditions, your lifestyle can affect your blood pressure.

Some of the most common causes of high blood pressure include being overweight, eating too much salt and not exercising enough among others. Drinking too much alcohol is also known to contribute to high blood pressure - or hypertension.

Experts believe that consuming too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels. Drinking more than three alcoholic beverages in one day can temporarily raise your blood pressure, but regular binge drinking can lead to long-term increases in hypertension.

A study carried out in 2017 discovered that there was an increased blood pressure reduction when people who drank more than two drinks per day had a reduced alcohol intake. If you drink alcohol, start to reduce your consumption to no more than two drinks per day for men and no more than one per day for women.

The study in question, published in The Lancet Public Health journal,

conducted a meta-analysis of 36 existing trials involving 2,865 participants.

It says: “In people who drank two or fewer drinks per day, a reduction in alcohol was not associated with a significant reduction in blood pressure; however, in people who drank more than two drinks per day, a reduction in alcohol intake was associated with increased blood pressure reduction.”

Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers; the higher number - systolic pressure - refers to the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.

to be 140/90 millimetres of mercury (mmHg) or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you’re over the age of 80). And ideal blood pressure is typically considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

Drinking in excess for a prolonged period of time, whether that’s been over the summer period or you drink heavily regularly, can raise your blood pressure to unhealthy levels that could lead to more complicated health problems down the line.Giving up the booze even just for a month will help lower those blood pressure levels to a much healthier level and could even help reduce the risk of other health issues that are associated with high blood pressure and alcohol consumption.

James Corden banned from top restaurant

Keith McNally, the owner of New York City restaurant Balthazar, has announced his intention to ban comedian James Corden over his alleged treatment of staff.McNally accused the comedian of “abusive” behaviour on Instagram. A day later, the restaurateur and owner of the French brasserie claimed that Corden had apologised, prompting him to reveal on Instagram that ‘all is forgiven’ and he had reversed his decision.

And the lower number - diastolic pressure - is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.

“Reduction in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure was strongest in participants who drank six or more drinks per day if they reduced their intake by about 50 percent,” the study continues.

“For the UK, the results would translate into more than 7,000 inpatient hospitalisations and 678 cardiovascular deaths prevented every year.”

Right reading

High blood pressure is considered

Government guidance states that men and women should not drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. This is equivalent to six pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of lower-strength wine.

Other risk factors for hypertension include: • Not eating enough fruit and vegetables

• Drinking too much coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks) • Smoking • Beingagedover 65

• Having a relative with high blood pressure

• Being of black African or black Caribbean descent

• Living in a deprived area

Amid the allegations from McNally, other famous New York City restaurateurs have stepped in to defend Corden, with StratisMorfogen, the founder of Philippe Chow Restaurant Group and the owner of numerous esteemed restaurants, including Brooklyn Chop House, telling US pressthat the comedian is one of the most “pleasant and funny guys” he’s ever served.

The restaurateur also revealed to the outlet that he can’t imagine Corden being mean. He referenced a 2018 postGrammys event held at the Brooklyn Chop House, during which he said Corden sang songs with the bartenders and tipped well.

Morfogen confirmed his support for Corden when asked about the comments. Speaking via Instagram, the restaurant owner added: “And I’ve

served every celebrity/president alive (except for President Jimmy Carter, he’s still alive lol.)”

However, Morfogen noted that he would also “retaliate” if “anyone disrespectedhis staff”.“Listen, if anyone disrespected my staff, I have done many things in retaliation,” he said.

Restaurateur Todd English, who owns restaurants including Figs, Todd’s, and The Stinger, also defended Corden and said he has been “absolutely lovely” each time he’s dined at one of English’s establishments.English, who has been the head chef at Tony Awards afterparties, claims Corden has always been “incredibly personable” to him and his staff.

When should you see a doctor after a breast self-examination?

Dr. Antonio Brugarolas is one of the most well-known oncology specialists at a national level, trained in the United States, he has been leading the Oncology Platform of the Quirónsalud Torrevieja hospital for more than twenty years. On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, Dr. Brugarolas looks at factors that cause the appearance of tumours and explains when to go to the doctor.

In what situations should a doctor be consulted?

It is essential that women carry out a breast self-examination and go to a specialist doctor when they notice any anomaly, a hardening, a visible change, alterations of the areola-nipple, or axillary thickening.

Tumours are usually painless while benign cysts and fibroadenomas can be painful.

The first mammogram: when is it recommended?

There are two keys to controlling the disease: improving your lifestyle in a healthy way and detecting the tumour when it is still less than 1-2 cm in size.

In tumours smaller than 2 cm, the cure of the disease is almost universally achieved, for this reason, check-ups (health and self-examination) have proven to be effective in controlling mortality.

The established clinical recommendation was to perform the first mammogram/ultrasound at age 40 and then every two years until age 50. From this moment on, annual controls are recommended until the age of 75.

When there is a family history, it can be carried out even before the age of 30.

When is it necessary to perform a mastectomy?

The presence of axillary metastases indicates that chemotherapy/specific combination therapy should be indicated first before surgery. For example, a tumor of less than 1 cm is cured with a surgical intervention that allows the breast to be preserved. In these cases, it is almost never necessary to give complementary chemotherapy to prevent metastases.

During the operation, a sentinel lymph node biopsy is performed and if it does not show metastasis, the cure rate is very high. When axillary metastases are present, radiation therapy to the axilla and remaining breast is always given. If mastectomy is performed, it is not necessary to irradiate the breast, but when the breast is conserved, postoperative radiotherapy must be given.

At Quirónsalud Torrevieja, there is a portable accelerator located in the operating room that allows a single dose of radiotherapy to be administered during the operation and to avoid subsequent radiotherapy treatment, which lasts about three weeks. On the other hand, in cases where mastectomy is performed, early breast reconstruction and symmetry is considered.

Can you live with metastatic breast cancer?

Fortunately, there are effective treatments that can provide years of quality life. Advances in molecular biology have produced excellent

treatments. In 2021 and 2022, exceptional results have been obtained with targeted drugs targeting new tumor genes. These drugs, defined by tumor genetics, constitute the so-called precision medicine or personalized cancer treatment.

Immunotherapy and breast cancer: what does it consist of?

Immunotherapy includes drugs aimed at boosting antitumor immunity, vaccines to generate a specific antitumor response, and genetic engineering approaches that modify a patient’s cells to provide a specific response. However, no vaccines or genetically engineered cells have yet been developed for breast cancer, which are emerging techniques that have already begun to be used in other tumors.

Immunotherapy with drugs that release checkpoints (PD1, PDL1 and CTLA) serve to enhance antitumor immunity and has been developed especially in adult solid tumors. It consists of the intravenous administration of drugs every 2-4 weeks, for 2 or more years, and which can already be administered as preventive in some triple negative breast tumors.

Immunotherapy in breast cancer is very effective in some triple negative tumors and in another group of tumors of the Luminal B lineage with a favorable immunological genetic profile for antitumor immunotherapy. In these cases, it is administered in preoperative guidelines in early cases because it enhances healing.

The combination of immunotherapy with conventional chemotherapy, with

radiotherapy and with precision drugs enhances its efficacy and improves the response rate, as well as survival. There is still no conclusive data and more time is needed to be able to accurately specify the results obtained.

What is intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT)?

It is a high-precision irradiation technique in which a single, high dose of radiotherapy is administered to the surgical tumour bed, during a surgical intervention.

The purpose of IORT treatments is to reduce the risk of tumour recurrence, increase local tumour control and therefore patient survival. “This technique, when performed during the surgical intervention, allows direct visualization of the area to be treated, avoiding unnecessary irradiation of the surrounding healthy tissues, and therefore reducing possible side effects”, explains Dr. Rosa María Cañón, Radiation Oncologist Chironsalud Torrevieja.

IORT has been used in the treatment of different malignant tumours. In the last two decades, there has been an important development in the application of IORT for the treatment of patients with breast cancer, in which in certain cases of early breast tumours, IORT can be administered during breast tumour surgery as the total radiotherapy dose, thereby eliminating all external radiotherapy sessions.

The ‘one step’ therapy, for patients with early breast cancer, who meet the appropriate criteria, allows all the local treatment to be performed in the same breast tumour surgery: removal of the tumour and the sentinel node,

full-dose irradiation, and , if necessary oncoplastic reconstruction. IORT treatment only prolongs surgery by about 30 minutes and eliminates all external radiotherapy sessions.

Mobetrón, a great revolution

The Oncology Platform of the Quirónsalud Torrevieja hospital has a MOBETRON® mobile accelerator (Unique in Spain), developed in the United States (Intraop Medical, California), installed in one of the operating rooms, with which to perform IORT treatments.

At Quirónsalud Torrevieja, IORT treatments have been administered since 2004, within multidisciplinary programs that include, in addition to surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, external radiotherapy. “From then until now we have treated tumours of different origin and location with IORT, with a large percentage and dedication to breast tumours,” confirms Dr. Rosa Cañón.

The Radiotherapy Oncology department of the Oncology Platform, as well as the rest of the specialists mentioned and involved, have extensive experience in the indication and administration of IORT treatments in the tumours where it is applied.

Black death still impacting our health after 700 years

A new, pioneering DNA study has discovered that the black death plague left such a significant genetic mark on humankind that it is still impacting our health almost 700 years on.

It is estimated that up to 200 million people died when the deadliest pandemic swept through Europe in the mid 1300s. Scientists have now analysed DNA taken from the teeth of over 200 skeletons and were able to accurately date whether the skeletons were from before, during or after the black death.

The study, which analysed the DNA of the centuries-old skeletons found mutations that helped people survive the plague. However, those same mutations are linked to auto-

immune diseases affecting people today.

Because of the huge impact the plague had on the human population at the time, researchers suspected that such an enormous event must have shaped human evolution.

Scientists looked at bones from the East Smithfield plague pits which were used for mass burials in London with additional samples coming from Denmark.

The most remarkable finding from the study, published in the journal Nature, surrounded mutations in a gene called ERAP2.

If you had the right mutations you were 40% more likely to survive the plague.

“That’s huge, it’s a huge effect, it’s a surprise to find something like that in the human genome,”

Professor Luis Barreiro, from the University of Chicago, told interviewers.

Those who were most likely to survive inherited the gene mutation. Survivors of the plague had children who passed on the mutations so suddenly, it became much more common.

“It’s huge we see a 10% shift over two to three generations, it’s the strongest selection event in humans to date,” evolutionary geneticist Professor Hendrik Poinar, from McMaster University, explained.

The problem is that the same mutations have been linked to auto-immune diseases such as the inflammatory bowel disease Crohn’s - what helped keep your ancestors alive 700 years ago but could be damaging your health today.

Angry people risk fatal heart problems

Anger is a common thing and can be a healthy indicator of issues that need solving. But too much anger can become bad for health. Angry people - who often have intense rage and fury - are even at higher risk of severe heart problems, research has suggested over the years.

Anger puts the body on high alert. When you’re angry, there is a “flood” of adrenaline that has a huge effect on your body.Your

blood pressure, heart rate and breathing raise, which makes blood more likely to clot. This can weaken artery walls and raise the risk for heart disease.

One study, published in the European Heart Journal, found that a person’s risk of a heart attack increased by nearly five times in the two hours

immediately after the outburst. The study, which looked at 4,546 cases of heart attack, suggested that a higher heart rate and blood pressure may be the cause.

An early study also showed that being an angry person overall - known as having “trait anger” - puts you at higher risk of fatal coronary heart disease.

Reminder for Company Vehicle Drivers

We have reported this before, but as the deadline is fast approaching, it is worth reminding company vehicle owners of changes that affect them from 1 November 2022.

From 1 November 2022, the traffic department will no longer issue sanctions to company vehicle drivers through the post. Instead, they will notify the drivers electronically only.

For the legal eagles, this change is in accordance with the provisions of article 14 of Law 39/2015, of October 1 and, in this same line as of November 1, which states that company registered vehicles drivers must provide an DirecciónElectrónica Vial (DEV), or Electronic Address, based on the provisions of article 60 of the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety, Ley de Tráfico, Circulación de Vehículos a Motor y Seguridad Vial.

For this, all legal entities, or

long-term users of a company vehicle, must have aDEV before that date, and they must provide an email and/or a mobile phone in order to receive the notices of the availability of the notifications that they may have pending. To register with the DEV, it is only necessary to have a valid digital certificate.

If this is not done, the General Directorate of Traffic will automatically assign a DEV to the company, which will receive traffic notifications electronically. When the ex officio assignment is made, the DGT will not be able to send the notices of the pending notifications to the email or mobile phone since it will not have these data, but the notification will still be available in the DEV mailbox, which must be accessed periodically to check for pending notifications.

Let us emphasise one important point. This ruling

ONLY affects drivers of vehicles

registered to a company. It does not affect the drivers of private cars. However, drivers of private cars can voluntarily register to receive notifications by electronic means. It will only be mandatory for drivers of vehicles registered to companies.

WHAT IS THE DEV?

The DirecciónElectrónica Vial (DEV)is an electronic mailbox in which any person, natural or legal, can register to receive traffic notifications and notices and incidents related to administrative authorisations that the DGT must send electronically and with the same legal effects as the paper notification.

Registration is voluntary for individuals, as we mentioned before, but mandatory for Legal Persons who, as of November 1, will no longer receive paper notifications and will only be notified electronically through the DEV.

How to Obtain Duplicate Vehicle Documents

Vehicle documents such as the ficha técnica de la ITV or the permiso de circulaciónare unique documents that allow you to identify your vehicle among all the others. That is why it is essential that, in case of loss, you obtain a duplicate as soon as possible. If you drive with an undocumented vehicle, you will be fined.

When you buy a car, whether new or second-hand, you are required to carry two documents in your vehicle if you are going to drive with it:

El permiso de circulación.

La ficha técnica de la Inspección Técnica de Vehículos (ITV).

You are also required to carry the ITV report, if your vehicle has one.

The permiso de circulación is a mandatory document shared by the countries of the European Union and

that every vehicle receives when it is registered. It contains, among other information, the car’s registration number, the date of registration and issue, the make of the vehicle and the type, and type of fuel.

In order for the permiso de circulación to be valid, it must be presented together with the ficha técnica de la Inspección Técnica de Vehículos (ITV). It is also a mandatory document that certifies that your vehicle is suitable for driving on Spanish roads by complying with the necessary technical approvals.

If any of these two documents are lost, stolen or damaged, you must request a duplicate from the DGT as soon as possible since you cannot drive without them or, otherwise, you will be fined.

How to request duplicate vehicle documents?

If your car papers have been stolen or lost, you must first go to the police station to report it as thesedocuments can be used fraudulently. One of the reasons documents are sometimes stolen from vehicles is to ‘make up’ a stolen car in another country, for example. With the stolen documentation they create a false number plate and thus try to sell the vehicle in another geographical area.

Once you have notified the Police and your insurance (they must be informed in case someone commits a crime with your vehicle’s documents), you can proceed to apply online, by phone or in person for the replacements.

To do this, you need:

Fill out the duplicate request form.

Identify yourself with your ID.

Pay the fees.

From here, it should take about two weeks for the document to arrive at your home. Remember, you cannot drive without the documents though, although there is a way of driving whilst you wait if your documents are available in the ‘miDGT’ app.

If you want to request the ITV card you will have to go to an ITV station or, if your car is registered after May 2016, you can request the electronic ITV through the DGT website.

If you do not want to risk losing your documents, you can obtain a certified copy from a notary, taking your originals to them to be processed, or, as mentioned, through the ‘miDGT’ app, where you can consult all the documentation for your vehicle, in addition to your driving licence, on your mobile.

For more information, the full procedure, and access to the electronic office to submit an application for lost documents, visit the DGT website, https://sede.dgt. gob.es/es/vehiculos/duplicadosrenovaciones/permiso-circulacion/ index.shtml#

Well, this impending World Cup is doing funny things to people, isn’t it?

Take this social media user, for example.

“Varane, James, Walker, Jota. All missing the World Cup. FIFA HAS GOT A LOT TO ANSWER FOR!!!!!!”

I mean, I don’t completely disagree with the general sentiment of the second bit - they have got a lot to answer for. But blaming them for the player injuries in the month of October? Wind it in a bit, my friend. It’s not as if no player ever has missed a summer World Cup because of an injury, is it? Injuries happen just as much at the end of a season as during it (though, I have no evidence to support that sweeping statement) so although I am not a huge fan of a World Cup kicking off in a matter of weeks, I do think that’s one of the weaker stones to through in FIFA’s direction.

Whisper it quietly, but it might even be quite good - you know, players actually relatively fit rather than at the end of a physically and emotionally draining season?

And in a moment of rare common sense in football, QPR manager Mick Beale turned down the opportunity to spend eight months in the Wolves dugout last week. He felt his graduation from promising young coach to sacked with a big payoff within a year was all happening a bit too fast - and probably couldn’t get away from the fact he ended up on Wolves’ shortlist because he speaks a bit of Portuguese.

Let’s just hope Villa don’t come knocking now they’ve freed Steven Gerrard to take over from King Klopp at Anfield - after all, one of the reasons Gerrard even had a reputation as a future Liverpool gaffer was down to the fact the Beale was alongside him.

Stevie G was sacked before they’d even got off the coach home after a trouncing away to Fulham in midweek. The Villa owners, somewhat

ambitiously/foolishly hoped to tempt the Poch or Tommy T to take over a side flirting with the Premier League relegation zone. It might surprise you to hear they turned it down - the allure of trying to locate Philippe Coutinho’s ability not quite strong enough.

And to the weekend action.

Nottingham Forest versus Liverpool used to be quite a big fixture back in the day and Forest used to win it quite frequently. It was like 1979 all over again at the City Ground as Steve Cooper channelled his inner Cloughie to steal a 1-0 win.

Mind you, you could understand why Jurgeylad was a little confusedLiverpool could have scored five or six, and that was just Virgil. Granted, they were a little unfortunate that Darwin Nunez was just starting to look like a big-money striker before he missed the weekend game but even without him Forest should have been put to bed.

That’s three defeats for Liverpool now - just one fewer than last season’s Premier League total and we’re not in November yet. And no away wins?

Seven years - I’m telling you, seven years.

Saturday night saw Chelsea and United get it on at the Bridge. Naturally, pre-match chatter was about a player not playing - Ronaldo. He’d managed to upset everyone again - this time by refusing to come on for the last few minutes against Spurs in midweek (United won and were pretty good without him) and then disappearing

off down the tunnel before the final whistle. Roy Keane, who also managed a somewhat inglorious ending to an illustrious United career isn’t sure what all the fuss is about - now there’s a surprise.

On the pitch, United showed two things they’ve been missing over the last few years - firstly, actual ability as they really did dominate Chelsea for large spells and then a bucket load of balls in equalising after Jorginho had put the Blues one up from the spot with minutes remaining.

Casemiro’s header was good, his celebration better - if he seems to care that much, maybe he isn’t just there for the money? Of course, this United side has been very expensively assembledbut maybe Ten Hag is on to something.

Which is more than can be said for Conte in the last week - a defeat at Old Trafford where Hugo Lloris was excellent was followed by defeat at home to Newcastle where Lloris was not excellent.

Being defensive, dull and ruining matches is all well and good when you are winning them. But when you are losing, the locals start to complain a bit - never forget, Tottenham fans would rather lose playing lovely stuff than win. Harry Kane scored again thoughimagine how excited everyone would be about him if that Haaland lad was still playing German football.

If, like the World Cup, you forget where the money is coming from, what Eddie Howe has done in a year at Newcastle is impressive - they ended the weekend sitting in fourth

place and in Miggy Almiron have the league’s most improved player so far this campaign.

Arsenal’s title bid hit a bit of a bump as they only picked up a point against Southampton who are by far the most confusing team in the Premier League. The thing that surprised me most at St Mary’s was not Southampton getting a draw - it was the fact that Theo Walcott is still a professional footballer. I thought he retired a year ago.

The dropped points made it a good weekend for Man City who beat Brighton. Pep has sussed that another good way to win matches is to get the ball to Erling as efficiently as possible - an instruction Ederson understood loud and clear in punting the ball to the Norweigan who frightened Sanchez into legging it out of his goal, bounced Webster into the stand before tucking the ball home. It was a goal scored a million times a weekend by under 12 football teams in England back in the 80s and 90s.

It turns out sacking Stevie G might have been a good idea - Villa stuck anyone else in charge against Brentford and they were 3-0 up within 20 minutes. The final score was 4-0, somewhat denting any idea of Thomas Frank taking over.

Caretaker managers are all the rage currently, and with QPR’s manager saying no Wolves decided to extend ex-Crewe boss Steve Davies’ tenure until after Christmas. That was before they lost 4-0 to Leicester thoughplans might have changed now.

Leeds are starting to wonder whether appointing someone similar to Marcelo Bielsa was a bad idea after all - Fulham beat Jesse Marsch’s team 3-2 at Elland Road to leave them in a bit of bother given the fact they’ve not won in quite a few now.

Life feels a bit better in the blue half of Merseyside now Dominic CalvertLewin has been able to get through a match without falling apart - he scored the first in Everton’s 3-0 win over Palace, a result that probably increases the pressure on Patrick Vieira.

And that’s it for now - following that performance, there will probably be a caretaker in charge of all this next week…

The following day we made the short trip across to Murcia to fish the Rio Segura in the town centre.

The river has been out of sorts for some time and apart from the top weight this was the case again.

Runaway winner was Terry Stroud.

Draw on the upstream end peg near to the crystal bridge he caught

almost constantly for 20.74kg of carp caught on the method feeder with corn.

Second was the ex England International Vinny Smith. Vinny fished mainly the whip with maggots and gave an exhibition of bleak fishing to weigh 5.74kg, which also included a small eel.

In third place just behind Vinny was Terry Screen. Terry also fished the whip but caught several very small carp along with around a 100 bleak for 5.46kg.

what a Disappointing Day

The autumn racing season for SAMM sailors should have started in September but once again other events at CTD caused a delay. So everybody was really looking forward to the first races on October 9th.

But, a disappointment awaited as the weather refused to cooperate. The normal start time came and went with no wind so the first race was delayed for and hour so did not start until 12.15 when a little wind had materialised.

Five boats started, one took 17 minutes to cross the start line after the gun, made minimal progress and soon retired while the other took 20 to 30 minutes to complete a lap (normally

boats lap in 9/10 minutes).

The race was average lap format of an hours duration, the slowest boat only completing 2 laps, the fastest 4 laps. The winner being Shoestring Omega crewed by John Down and Jack Moss.

The wind died away to nothing so, although the second race did start it was abandoned by the race officer after 30 minutes as three boats had retired and the remaining two hadn’t even reached the first mark.
