Too hot for holidays

Experts are warning that the consequences of climate change and the more frequent and intense heat waves will a ect the main economic sector of the south and southeast of Spain - tourism.

A scientist from the Carlos III Health

Institute,

escape the sti ing temperatures.

Experts believe that Spain most popular Costas will mirror the climate of North Africa as the current exible temperature continue to rise. Therefore, people will tend to go to the north to sleep and rest better, as it will be impossible to escape the heat in the south or the centre of the country.

But not only the experts warn of a tourist problem, there will be an increase in anxiety and short tempers. These are the consequences that heat waves, such as the ones we su ered this summer, are bringing according to scientists from the Carlos III Health Institute, the public research body that investigates biomedical and health. Researchers are seeing a relationship between the increase in mental health problems and the climate crisis. As fatigue accumulates, the exhaustion and frustration can cause a change

in people’s psychology. These are the ndings discussed recently at a conference in Elche, dedicated to cities of the future and to re ect on the climate emergency in cities.

Dire consequences

Heat waves are seriously a ecting health and the biggest example is this summer, where there were extreme temperatures and 42 days of excessive heat. In fact, the number of deaths attributable to the temperatures multiplied almost four times, from 1,300 on average, to 4,500.

In Japan and the US there are studies that relate heat waves to a higher number of suicides, experts warn. Hospitals are also noticing an increase in people su ering from alcohol-related problems. When temperatures rise, people also consume more alcohol, with a risk of abuse, as social activities such

as BBQ’s and afternoon parties increase and needing a cold drink and can be used as the perfect excuse for a beer or a gin and tonic.

Tra c accidents also increase during heat waves because people are tired and are driving with reduced re exes. High temperatures also exacerbate current conditions. In fact, the majority of deaths during heat waves are not caused by heat stroke, but because high temperatures increase the symptoms of pathologies putting a considerable amount of people at risk.

UK driving licence exchange

The British Embassy in Madrid has published more information about ‘driving licence exchange’ for Britons who were unable to complete the procedure to acquire a Spanish licence before Brexit legislation kicked in.

Hundreds of British residents missed the deadline to trade their UK licences for a Spanish equivalent. The Embassy said that ‘both the legal and political approvals are underway’ to allow the exchange to take place.

Despite the British Ambassador’s recent assurance that negotiations had taken a ‘signi cant step forward’, the agreement still isn´t signed. The announcement was met with open arms by Brits caught out by the cancellation of the British licence as a valid driving permit in Spain earlier this year. Especially as it was announced that licences will be swapped without the need to take a practical or theory test.

Once the agreement has been published in the Spanish State Bulletin, drivers will have six months to swap their licence for a Spanish one. Anyone failing to meet the six-month grace period will be unable to drive in Spain.

Although the practical and theory test have been dropped, anyone wishing to switch their license will still have to take an aptitude test, which is designed to test eyesight, hearing and reactions. These tests have recently been updated by the tra c authorities. Drivers will have to show their pass certi cate in order to be able to exchange their UK licence.

Travel misery for expats

Expats travelling to the UK for Christmas and the New Year will y straight into 8 days of strike action by border force sta . Thousands will face severe disruptions to their travel plans and rail workers and other service sector sta have also announced a series of strikes.

Rail sta , nurses, civil servants, bus drivers, and postal workers are among those planning to walk out in the weeks before Christmas, with industrial action expected to continue into 2023.

Sta at six UK airports are due to stage walkouts from 23rd December to Boxing Day and from 28th December to New Year’s Eve. The strike action triggered a warning from home secretary Suella Braverman of “serious disruption” to travel. However, the boss of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, the UK’s second-largest tour operating group, sent out a de ant message in response to the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union strike which a ects three of airlines’ ten departure airports – Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow.

“We are aware of the strike action, and we would like to let our customers and industry partners know that we very much intend to operate our full schedule of ights throughout the

festive period.

“Our teams will work tirelessly to make sure we y everyone to and from their destinations so that they can enjoy those well-deserved holidays,” said Chief executive Steve Heapy.

Camposol domestic violence murder

A minute’s silence has been held for the victim of domestic violence, murdered at her home in Camposol, Murcia. Police arrested the husband on 4th December at their home after, neighbours called emergency services to report that the wife was lying facedown and not moving outside the house.

The couple had only recently moved to the Camposol Urbanisation and neighbours

were concerned to hear shouting and threats being made. They then saw a body in the garden, which police identi ed as the 56-year-old female married to the man inside the property.

It is believed that the 68-year-old man had a history of domestic violence and was intoxicated when police arrived at the house. He has since been remanded to prison by the

court in Totana.

Following the minutes silence, the Spanish government’s delegate for Murcia, Jose Velez, highlighted the need to “isolate the abuser and de nitively defeat the harmful culture of silence that forces many victims, out of fear or shame, to remain silent about attacks. We need unity and social and institutional resolve to end gender violence.”

Mixed predictions for 2023 housing market

Rising energy costs, priceled in ation and increasing Eurozone interest rates have led experts to speculate on what could happen in Spain’s housing market in 2023. They include a reduction in the number of property purchases, a small rise in home values, and growing interest in renting instead of owner-occupancy.

Spain has one of Europe’s highest rates of home ownership –approximately threequarters of occupied residential property is lived in by those who have bought or inherited it, with or without a mortgage – meaning the rental market has tended to be largely seasonal, although younger adults nding it increasingly hard to get onto the housing ladder are becoming the largest tenancy market, especially with the di culty they nd in obtaining a ordable rent prices in big cities.

Some property market analysts predict an approximate 12 percent shrinking in buying and selling next year, largely due to the rst rise in the Euribor, or Eurozone interest rate, in many years. This summer, for the rst time since February 2016, the Euribor rose above zero, meaning mortgages are more

expensive at the end of 2022 than they were at the same time last year.

The greater cost of mortgage repayments, combined with reducing household spending power as a result of consumer and energy prices going up, are predicted to lead to some reduction in homebuying. However, the same analysts also believe there will be ‘no major

across Spain attempt to soften the blow of in ation for their employees, and whether the European Central Bank (BCE) will consider this in ation to be safely contained and therefore minimise interest rate rises.

The market is likely to adapt to encompass other formats of acquiring a home – renting with the option to buy being one of these.

Valencia calls for responsible mask wearing

The Valencian Minister for Health is calling for people to be responsible and wear masks in certain situations this winter.

Miguel Minguez wants people to wear face masks inside buildings, in crowds and around the young, the elderly and those who are medically vulnerable.

He believes that this would help reduce hospital admissions at what is traditionally a busy time for the health service.

falls in home values’, due to a ‘very strong, latent demand’ for buying. In fact, they forecast rises in home prices of around 5 percent in 2023.

Demand will still exist, but potential buyers are more likely to postpone their decisions and keep their eye on the news –whether the con ict in Ukraine continues to a ect energy prices and the direct e ect of this on the cost of consumer goods, whether they are likely to get a pay rise as companies

BBVA Research, the analyst arm of the highstreet bank, forecasts a ‘minor shrinking’ in home sales for the coming year, but assures that actual levels of property selling will ‘continue to be high’ – just not as high as in 2022. Growth in home values will be ‘nominal’ –in region of 2 percent - in 2023, the BBVA says.

ING bank predicts a ‘cooling down’ in the home-buying fever seen in 2022, the rst full year of the decade with no pandemicrelated restrictions, and that the slowdown in sales and purchases will be more pronounced at the beginning of next year than in the months that follow. The bank believes home prices could close 2022 with a year-on-year increase of 7 percent, but that this will slow down to around 1 percent in 2023.

The Minister said it was not just down to protection against Covid19 but also to stop a rise in respiratory viruses in the Valencian Community.

“The rise in bronchitis cases is more signi cant compared to previous years because children were protected by all Covid measures, including masks,” he said.

“Hospitals are getting busy in general but that was something

to be expected and the Valencian health system has responded perfectly due to lessons learned during the pandemic.

“It is important that those who need to be immunised for u and Covid do so, and to wear masks in closed areas or if they

are with vulnerable people who have immunode ciencies or are elderly,” he added.

Around 850,000 people have been vaccinated against u in the region so far, and the jabs are being coupled with the fourth Covid booster jab.

Migrants found dead off Murcia coast

Spanish o cials found the bodies of three migrants last Thursday after their boat capsized o the coast of Murcia. Six people, believed to have been in the same vessel were rescued.

“We have begun a search for a possible capsizing o Cape Palos. Three bodies

were found, six people were rescued,” the statement said.

The search for other possible survivors was organised between Cape Palos and Cape Negrete, close to the city of Cartagena, at the time it was unknown how many people who were on board the boat.

In total, 35 migrants

arrived in the region on Thursday morning in four boats, including the vessel suspected to have capsized.

O cials did not provide details on the migrants’ nationality, age or sex. Spain is one of the main countries of entry for migrants seeking to settle in Europe.

Christmas Toy Appeal

If you’re a regular reader of the Costa Blanca People, or a TKO Radio listener, you’ve probably already heard about the San José Obrero orphanage. The orphanage caters for around 60 children from the age of 5 to 18 housed in two residence units in Orihuela and Elche. There are also several children in a day facility who go home in the evening time as well as a temporary foster care facility. In addition, there is transitional accommodation for older teenagers who do not have family support in order to help them cope with the evolution to adulthood and independence.

The orphanage is run by the church and most of the children both live and are educated there. In

spite of this, the orphanage does not receive support from the state and is always looking for help from the public.

In the spirit of Christmas and ‘children helping children’, Willow International School is once again this year running a Christmas Gift Appeal in association with TKO Radio and the Costa Blanca People. They are asking students’ families and members of the public in general to add an extra item to their Christmas shopping lists this year.

School Principal Amanda Riding told the Costa Blanca People “We buy so much at Christmas and many of us are lucky that we are able to purchase lovely gifts for our friends and loved ones. I’m asking our families and

friends this year that perhaps when they are shopping for their family or heading out to buy their o ce Secret Santa that they add another special item to their Christmas lists –to buy a toy for a child in need.”

Amanda explained that the Gift Appeal will be advertised on TKO Radio and in the Costa Blanca People throughout the festive season saying “We’ve had such wonderful support from the local media and I am very grateful to TKO and to the Costa Blanca People for publicising this for us. As a community, the expats have always been so supportive of charity appeals and I think everyone will agree that making sure these children have a special gift at Christmas time is a very worthy

cause indeed.”

To support the Gift Appeal, all you need to do is to buy a gift, wrap it and drop if o at one of the drop o points (listed below).

The toys must be brand new but can be of any size and cost all gifts will be most gratefully received.

The deadline for all gifts to be dropped o is Monday December 19th.

While younger children will be delighted with toys, older children might perhaps like some toiletries, Christmas sweets or goodies, or even a voucher in order to go shopping in the sales. Fundraiser for the orphanage Lyn Adams said, “The children are always in need of basic items, clothes and toiletries.”

Police hunt 12 who fled plane in Barcelona

Spanish police were still searching for 12 passengers who ed their plane last Wednesday after an emergency landing at Barcelona airport following what may have been a fake medical incident, o cials said. The escapees were part of a group of 28 people on a Pegasus Airlines ight from Casablanca to Istanbul after it made a predawn landing at Barcelona’s El Prat airport.

Police were originally searching for 14 passengers, but later announced that they had made two arrests. It is the second such incident in just over a year.

At 4:30am the plane requested an emergency landing because “a female passenger’s waters had supposedly broken”, said a source in the central government’s delegation in Catalonia. The plane was met by an ambulance and three police patrols but “as they were disembarking the pregnant woman, a group of 28 people left the plane and tried to ee”, the source said.

Police managed to detain 14 of them, including the pregnant woman, but ve were returned to the plane at their own request after being accepted back by the airline sta . The authorities

processed the other would-be migrants to ensure their return to Morocco.

“The woman was taken to Sant Joan de Deu hospital for a check-up, which found no signs she was in labour, so she was discharged and arrested for disturbing the public order by claiming she had gone into labour,” the source said.

The previous incident was on 5th November, 2021, involving a ight from Morocco to Turkey.

Another plane ying from Casablanca to Istanbul was forced to make an emergency

landing in Mallorca after one of the passengers appeared to be unwell. After the passenger was disembarked from the plane with a companion, another 21 people ed. The passenger, who had appeared to be going into a diabetic coma, was taken to hospital but found to be ne. He was then arrested, while the companion ed. Police arrested 12 people, including a passenger who created a disturbance on the plane, while another 12 managed to ee, prompting a manhunt. All but one were thought to be Moroccans.

GBP / EUR UPDATE FREE CONCERT

The Crescendo Choir will be giving a free concert on Saturday 17 December beginning at 6pm.

GBP

UK data-lovers have been surviving on scraps, with a fairly light agenda over the week. Perhaps the most telling release came in the shape of the latest House Price survey from the Halifax. Following on from a weak print from the Nationwide just last week, the Halifax con rmed that UK house prices declined by 2.3% throughout November, which represented the sharpest drop in prices for some 14 years. Declines can perhaps be expected, given the sharp rate increases leading to a lack of new mortgage applications, itself fuelled by big increases to the cost-of-living, and economic uncertainty. Given the big rises in prices over such a long time, it is also perhaps not surprising that some consolidation is to be expected, a move which could help those who were previously unable to purchase property, a welcome opportunity. That will certainly be helped if longterm rates continue their recent correction.

The pound has remained remarkably resilient of late, with GBP/USD continuing to trend higher, reaching a top approaching 1.2350, a move which has been helped by a much weaker dollar. GBP/ EUR has also moved back over 1.1600 through the latter part of the week, after previously declining from a recent high at 1.1700.

Next week could not be more di erent than this week has been, with a plethora of key UK data releases due, including the latest in ation, employment and the next Bank of England meeting. In ation comes before the BoE, and having reached 11.1% (YoY), expectations are for a further increase to around 11.5%. If the data matches expectations, then the current marketimplied expectations for another 50bps rate hike from the BoE will be cemented. That would see

UK rates reach 3.5%, despite the economy now falling into a recession, and a particularly di cultlooking winter ahead for a UK consumer that is already betting huge increases to their cost-ofliving.

EURO

Having raised Euro-area interest rates by 200bps since July, the ECB are now getting very close to reaching their neutral level, according to the ECB’s Herodotou. Next week’s ECB meeting is therefore expected to conclude with a slightly smaller 50bps move, after two successive meeting of 75bps hikes. The case for a shallower hike increased after the latest in ation data for the region decreased to 10% (YoY) from 10.6% previously. Markets have since settled on a 50bps move, although there have been some mixed messages from ECB o cials of late, with ECB President Lagarde unwilling to commit in recent speeches, so a larger hike cannot be completely dismissed at this stage.

Recent data has been better, certainly in Germany, where factory orders and Industrial Output have surprised to the upside. The latest growth data for the region also (just about) beat expectations, rising by 0.3% (QoQ/Q3) and marking a yearly gain of 2.3%.

As for the single currency, well EUR/USD has been capped at 1.0600, which needs to be broken to open-up further upside potential for the single currency. Saying that, the recent trend higher after breaking back over parity remains on track. Looking at the busy schedule next week, the Fed are likely to dominate proceedings, and so for this rally to continue, it will probably take a smaller hike from the Fed (see USD).

The venue is La Siesta Evangelical Church, Calle Granados, La Siesta.

This international choir will be performing a variety of music, including popular and seasonal songs.

Entrance to the event is free, but there will be an exit collection for charitable causes.

Everyone is welcome to what is always a very enjoyable event

Carols in Campoverde

The small village of Pinar de Campoverde will be ringing with Christmas carols all next week from Sunday 18 December 22 to Saturday 24 December 22. Campoverde Church in the Community is organising community carol singing rstly outside ‘The Tipsy Cow’ bar, starting at 6pm on Sunday 18 Dec 22 (or as soon as the ‘World Cup’ is over!). Carols will include everything from ‘Away in a Manger’ to ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ (with actions!) and there will be a nativity pageant provided by local children.

This will be repeated again at 6pm on Wednesday 21 Dec 22 in the ‘Portabello’ bar at the other end of the village. Finally, on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24 Dec 22) at 6pm there will be a short service of readings and carols to tell the Christmas story at Campoverde Church, followed by wine and mince pies in the church hall (‘The Shed’).

Our son is a drug addict. He cannot hold down a job, is invariably homeless going from one friend’s sofa to another; he’s on benefits but we hear he deals in drugs. We haven’t seen him for 10 years, he rarely contacts us, misses our birthdays etc, and when he does get in touch it’s only to ask for money, and we know he’s had trips to Spain for lads’ holidays very near to us, but has not visited. We’ve sent him tens of thousands of pounds over the last two decades (much to our daughter’s annoyance), and he hasn’t shaped

up at all. Our daughter has washed her hands of him because he owes her money, and steals from her when she puts him up at her house; she has children and says he is a bad influence so she wants him out of her life. We are disappointed in him, but how can we help him?

The problem with drug addicts, and people who are irresponsible in life, is if you give them money, you are enabling their lifestyle rather than helping them become decent people. It’s all too easy when they have the Bank of Mum and Dad to

rely on, and a sister who they thank by stealing from. I don’t blame your daughter for ousting her brother, and I too would be annoyed at the wastage of money on a son who can’t even remember your birthdays, or telephone just to ask how you both are. I gather from your longer email that you are both elderly, in ill health and now in need of the money yourselves. You ask how you can help him? But by now your son must be middle aged, and so possibly the stable door has been shut. The next time he telephones you must tell him of your predicament and that you must look after yourselves now.

“Should I be wary of Facebook Copy and Paste requests?”

Their intention may be a genuine attempt to widen the spread of their message -- but there’s also a downside if the original poster was planning to harvest information about you.

When you copy and paste an item, you’re really creating a new post that can be seen by all your friends and beyond. In other words, it gets wider circulation. By copying and pasting, you’re e ectively enabling the original poster to track everyone else who is repeating it.

If the original poster inserts some text with a couple of spelling mistakes in the message. Then they do a search using the misspelt phrase. This returns a list of everyone who has copied and pasted the message.

Furthermore, the original poster can delete their message and therefore, not be easily traceable, while the copied-and-pasted versions live on. So, as mentioned above, while deleting a shared message would remove the entire chain of forward shares (note, not earlier shares), that wouldn’t happen with a copy and paste. You’re giving information about yourself that potentially could be used for identity theft. The original poster’s intentions may have been perfectly honourable. Or maybe they’re not. And you may not nd out until it’s too late.

About a Boy

Saturday 17th December – ITV, 5.30pm

Twelve year old Marcus Brewer lives with his chronically depressed single mother, Fiona Brewer. Both Fiona and Marcus beat to their own respective drummers. Marcus will do whatever he can to make his depressed mother happy, even if it causes himself grief. As such, he realizes that he is perceived as di erent than most kids, as even the self-professed weird kids don’t want to hang out with him as he is the target of bullying. Part of the taunts against him are the fact that he sings and speaks to himself without even realizing that he is doing it. Meanwhile, thirty-eight year old Will Freeman is a slacker who has lived comfortably o the royalties of a song written by his deceased father, and as such has never had to work a day in his life. He is a solitary man who places himself as the rst and only priority in life. He comes across the idea that dating single moms meets his sel sh carnal needs. It is in this capacity that Will meets Marcus, as one of Will’s single mother conquests, Suzie, is friends with the Brewers. Trying to escape his life but wanting Will to date Fiona, Marcus in ltrates Will’s life, much to Will’s chagrin. Will slowly begins to realize that Marcus is more than just a nuisance, but rather someone who needs some guidance navigating through the trials of adolescence and the trials of dealing with a suicidal mother, and perhaps he can be a small part of providing that direction.

Could POTATOES hold the cure for cancer?

Scientists think this is the case and say potatoes may even lead to drugs with less vicious side e ects.

It is the compound in potatoes which could be the key to ghting cancer and it is also thought that this compound could have less side-e ects than chemotherapy

Studies also show that aubergines can help ght liver cancer by stopping the reproducing and tomatoes could kill cancer cells.

Although hugely successful at killing cancer cells, chemotherapy can trigger an array of unpleasant side e ects like hair loss, nausea and fatigue. This is due to the drugs killing healthy cells elsewhere

in the body, alongside targeting the cancerous ones..

A team of scientists have reviewed the evidence on glycoalkaloids — compounds abundant in the Solanacease family of plants, which includes potatoes, tomatoes and aubergines. In the correct doses, these chemicals can be ‘powerful clinical - They focused on ve glycoalkaloids — solanine, chaconine, solasonine, solamargine and tomatine which they believe could be used to develop drugs in the future.

But there has been no research yet done on how the chemicals can ght cancer in human cells, one of the earliest stages of research.

Scientists around the world are still searching for the drugs which will be lethal to cancer cells but at the same time safe for healthy cells.

Plants have been used to ght cancer for decades, such as chemotherapy medication Taxol, which is made from tree bark.

But there is no research that says simply eating your ve a day will kill cancer cells, even if a healthy diet may help to prevent tumours in the rst place.

They are not a substitute for cancer treatment, such as chemo, radiotherapy and surgery, which can cure people of the disease if caught early enough.

Can Foreign Vehicles Obtain a Spanish Eco Sticker?

We have been speaking a lot about the so-called eco sticker, or environmental badge, and the requirements for driving in Low Emission Zones in Spain.

However, there are still two main questions outstanding regarding the eco stickers, that is if the sticker issued in Spain is valid in other countries that also have Low Emission Zones, and if foreign registered vehicles will be permitted to drive in these restricted areas in Spain.

To answer the rst question, can I drive with my Spanishissued badge in restricted areas of other countries? The answer, unfortunately, is no. If you are going to travel with your vehicle to another country with an environmental classi cation system, such as Germany, Austria, Denmark, or France, for example, your Spanish eco sticker is not valid. You must research the

requirements for each country you are planning to travel to, as you may be required to obtain a sticker relevant to that country.

However, the opposite is not always the case. If you have a badge issued in some other EU countries, you may be permitted to drive in restricted areas within Spain.

There are several countries in the European Union that have drawn up a classi cation system for vehicles based on how polluting they are, similar to the Spanish system. In Spain it is not possible to issue environmental labels to vehicles with foreign registration.

If you have a vehicle from a country with an environmental label (Germany, Austria, Denmark, France) then the DGT considers that your vehicle does have the corresponding Spanish label.

You can check the equivalence between the classi cations of

the di erent countries on the DGT website, at https://sede.dgt. gob.es/es/vehiculos/distintivoambiental/equivalenciadistintivo-ambiental-ue.shtml. Checking the equivalent restriction is crucial to ensure that the eco badge issued in your country is valid, and to what extent.

If you have a foreign registered vehicle, as we have mentioned, it is not possible to obtain a Spanish environmental badge. But, if your vehicle comes from a country with environmental certi cation (Germany, Austria, Denmark, France), you can again check the equivalent of your badge in Spain, as you may be able to drive in Spain with your country’s badge, as we have mentioned.

Remember, only those vehicles displaying the relevant eco sticker are permitted to enter the Low Emission Zones.

te o ie nd e nition of Eco Stickers in Spain

We have been speaking a lot about the necessity to obtain an eco sticker for your vehicle, El Distintivo Ambiental DGT to give it the full name in Spanish, as Low Emission Zones are being implemented in most Spanish towns and cities, and you will face a ne if you enter one of these zones without the sticker in your windscreen.

We thought it also a good idea to explain a little more about the actual characteristics, categories and de nitions of these eco stickers, so you understand them a little better.

The DGT Environmental Badge, El Distintivo Ambiental DGT, is a label that quickly identi es the most environmentally friendly vehicles. It must be placed in the lower right corner of the windshield, looking out, and, although it is voluntary, it is recommended, as you will be ned if you accidentally drive into a Low Emission Zone without the sticker on display.

The eco sticker is also referred to as the environmental badge, and is a way of classifying vehicles based on their energy e ciency, taking into account

their environmental impact.

The purpose of the classi cation is to positively discriminate the most environmentally friendly vehicles and to be an e ective instrument at the service of municipal policies, both restrictive of tra c in episodes of high pollution, and of promoting new technologies through bene ts scal or related to mobility and the environment.

The eco sticker itself is formed of adhesive material, has a diameter of 97mm in the version to be displayed on cars and vans, and 87mm for the version for motorcycles.

There are four types of badge, which are issued depending on the polluting potential of the vehicle:

1. Distintivo cero emisiones, the zero emissions label, which is coloured blue, and applies to:

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV).

Electric vehicles with extended range (REEV).

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) with a minimum range of 40 km.

Fuel cell vehicles.

2. Distintivo eco, or the eco badge, this is coloured green and blue, and applies to:

Plug-in hybrid vehicles with a range of less than 40 km.

Non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HEV). Vehicles powered by natural gas. Vehicles powered by natural gas (CNG and LNG) or lique ed petroleum gas (LPG).

3. Distintivo C, or distinctive C, a greencoloured sticker that applies to:

Passenger cars and light petrol vans, registered from January 2006.

Passenger cars and light diesel vans registered from 2014.

Vehicles with more than 8 seats and heavy, petrol or diesel, registered from 2014.

Diesel passenger cars and light vans registered from January 2006.

Vehicles with more than 8 seats and heavy, petrol or diesel, registered from 2005

Petrol vehicles must comply with the Euro 3 standard, and diesel vehicles with Euro 4 and 5.

There are an additional two types of labels which are designed for motorcycles and other similar vehicles, but they all have the same cost:

Two and three-wheeled mopeds with a cylinder capacity of less than 50 cm³ if internal combustion and a maximum speed of no more than 45 km/h.

Light quadricycles with an empty mass of less than 350 kg (not including the mass of the batteries in the case of electric vehicles), a maximum speed of not more than 45 km/h, a displacement of less than or equal to 50 cm³ for internal combustion engines or a power equal to or less than 4 kW for other types of motors.

Two-wheeled motorcycles with or without a sidecar with a displacement greater than 50 cm³, if it is internal combustion, and a maximum speed

On a motorcycle, the eco sticker must be displayed in a visible location, as many of them do not have a windscreen. You can purchase a special holder, similar to the tax disk holder that used to be used in the UK, but this is not mandatory, only that the sticker must be visible.

If you want to check what category your vehicle falls into, the DGT has a tool on their website where you can input your vehicle registration number and click “Consultar”, and the site will tell you the category you fall into. That tool is available at https://sede.dgt.gob. es/es/vehiculos/distintivo-ambiental#

We have already explained how you can obtain your eco sticker from the main post o ce network, the easiest option, but you can also obtain one through workshops of the Spanish Confederation of workshops (CETRAA) and other networks of authorised workshops, Gestores Administrativos, the Institute of Automotive Studies (IDEAUTO) and in the case of eets, you can obtain the badges through the Ganvam association.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT

Did you think he’d score? I thought he’d score. I think he thought he’d score. Other than the ‘small detail’ of Harry Kane not scoring that penalty, England more than matched France in their World Cup quarter- nal.

The problem is, the ‘small detail’ wasn’t really a ‘small detail’. It was rather a big detail.

You had to feel a bit for Raheem Sterling - it was the second time in a week he’d been robbed blind. It’s easy to blame the referee and, of course, he and his cohorts did actually give England two penalties but you can’t help but wonder how the game might have played out if he’d got the rst two big calls right.

Bukayo Saka was fouled about half an hour before France nally got their shot away which ew past Jordan Pickford - yes, England could have done more to stop play going from the far corner ag to the bottom corner of Pickford’s net but it was a foul and the move shouldn’t have even started.

Even turning a blind eye to that, generously, then what if VAR had actually done what it is there to do and overturned the clear and obvious error of Harry Kane being taken out on the line of the penalty area after England trailed? Would being level earlier helped at all? Possibly, possibly.

This was no ordinary England exit from a major tournament - passive, weak, out of ideas. This one reminded me more of France 98, going out to Argentina in a pulsating game (that also had a very, very dubious referee decision in it too as it goes).

England were good, even maybe very good. Saka had his man having nightmares whilst wide awake, Rabiot in cold sweats every time he came inside and Dalot Upemecano wondering how on Earth he wasn’t hooked at any point during 90

minutes. Kyle Walker won his personal duel with Kylian Mbappe meaning France had to give the ball to Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele instead - what a hardship. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson - other than rarely locating Griezmann - were more dynamic and better at everything than the French mid eld (except, er, smashing one in from 25 yards too I guess). And it was Kane’s best performance in an England shirt for years, if you can forget the ‘small detail’.

But we didn’t win. And when it comes down to it, that’s what matters.

France only needed to be good for ten minutes and manage the rest and they did. That’s the extra bit of spice you need to win the thing.

Anyone calling for Gareth Southgate’s head after this tournament is a fool. If he does go, we’ll miss him. The players love him, but not in an unruly class knowing they can get away with stu kind of way. They genuinely love and respect him and he has changed the culture of the England team and, you might have heard, taken us further more often than any England manager than the only one to have one something (at home, hundreds of years ago, with a

very dodgy goal).

There’s nobody obvious to take over so hopefully, after a bit of a break, Southgate will remember what a squad he has and that we need him to do it all again for the Euros. He’s not perfect, no - but the team is improving each time under him and when you look at the ages of the players who are now absolutely key, you’d think England could be even better next time (if you ignore the fact that France

are hardly ancient with about 50 talents coming through who are as good as anything England have).

And just think, somewhere in a parallel universe Kane decided that taking the second one might be pushing it a bit and chucked the ball to someone else and England went on to win it on penalties.

Still, even in an alternative reality, we’d have found a way to lose to Morocco no doubt.

Where is the wind this autumn? Late!

Three di erent on-line forecasts predicted winds of 10 to 13 knots on Sunday December 4th, perfect for the SAMM race competitors. What did they get? Zilch, nada, a at calm.

The race o cer decided to postpone the 11.00 start of the rst race to 11.30, then 11.45, then an hour but by then the competitors were getting restless so he took a chance the wind would build in and started the race at 12.00.

But still nothing except a faint breath of air occasionally which enabled the two smaller, faster Shoestring Group dinghies to commence racing but two of the bigger Balaton Group boats could not even make the start line and retired after multiple attempts. The third Balaton did manage one lap but took 30 minutes and then was becalmed about half way round the second lap and decided to call it a day.

This left Cuatro and Omega to battle for the win, Omega nally triumphing with 3 laps averaging 1050 seconds over Cuatro’s 2 laps at 1561 seconds. When you realise that normally, average lap times are between 300 and 500 seconds you can see how slow they sailed. Understandable in the conditions.

Nobody wanted to try

for a second race so it was abandoned. Everybody put their boats away and went for lunch. That’s when the wind showed up at about the forecast strength. Somebody’s law comes to mind!

The only good thing about the day was some very atmospheric photographs.

Lo Romero, set on the Mediterranean Coast always in immaculate condition and today was no exception. Most notably known for its challenging island 18th green. This game was a joint venture with The Royal Oak Golf Society so 28 players teed o . SAMM Captain for the day, Rona Agnew led us away as the wind blew a hoolie. Josephine Monaghan won nearest the pin on the 12th and Royal Oak Captain, Ken Physick, was nearest on the 15th. Ronnie Taylor took the longest drive, while the clear Stableford champion was Tony Monsellato with 34 points.

As this was the last meeting of the year it was followed by the Xmas bash. Revelers enjoyed beer, wine and pizzas followed by the Xmas Ra e. Prizes included priceless golf artifacts and French wines. Many thanks to Sergio for drawing the ra e

winners, Mati, Gabriel and all the Lo Romero sta for making it a great day out. I had to leave at midnight, but some may still be carousing.
