It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Hundreds of international residents gathered In Torrevieja recently for the twentieth ‘Carols in the Square’ Christmas concert. The crowds, mainly British and Scandinavian, gathered around the stage of the Plaza de la Constitución to enjoy the festive fun.

Many entered into the festive spirit with Santa hats and Christmas jumpers as they sang festive favourites such as Jingle Bells, We Wish you a Merry Christmas and Deck the Halls.

The music was provided by the Royal British Legion Concert Band, directed by David Last, and accompanied by the Crescendo choir and Torrevieja singer Shani Ormiston.

The event was attended by the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, the vice mayor, Rosario Martínez, and the councillor for International Residents, Gitte Lund.

The typically Christmas songs were performed in both English and Spanish, such as Fum, Fum, Fum and

Christmas Day festive fundraising

Local charity Help at Home Costa Blanca has received 100 Santa hats, kindly donated by the N332 Group to be used to raise money. The Help at Home volunteers will be at La Zenia beach on Christmas morning handing out the hats for a small donation –and you won’t miss them as they’ll be wearing uorescent harnesses. This Christmas will be the rst since the pandemic where the community has been allowed to

gather at the beach. Prior to Covid, the event had become a local tradition, where hundreds of people from all nationalities ocked to the beach to celebrate the day.

Most wear festive costumes, Christmas jumpers, onesie’s or at least a Santa Hat to enter into the spirit of the occasion. Carols and popular Christmas songs are played by a brass band with the crowds often joining in for an impromptu sing-along.

Parking scam warning

Local police are warning people to beware of a scam involving parking tickets that is moving from area to area. The con originated in Madrid and o cers believe it will soon be here on the coast.

Victims nd a parking ne on their parked car either in the street or in a car park. The ticket appears to have been issued by the local Town Hall. To pay the ne there is a QR code to

scan. Once scanned the code opens a website with payment details for the alleged o ence. However, the money will go straight into the criminal’s bank account.

Police are keen to remind drivers that o cial parking tickets are always paid through o cial channels such as banks or the DGT and the details are usually printed on the ticket of where you can pay.

Amazon scam warning

Amazon has issued an urgent warning to all customers using its UK website as shoppers are warned to be vigilant when purchasing goods online. Amazon has warned customers to look out for messages telling them to ‘act now’ or ‘act fast’. The online giant sent out the warnings after it was discovered that crooks had been posing as the company’s website in order to steal personal information.

Christmas typically brings in a lot of internet tra c to Amazon as people shop online for last-minute stocking stu ers and gifts for loved ones. However, it also attracts a lot

of interest from cybercriminals who are looking to cheat unsuspecting customers out of money. Amazon’s worldwide popularity has made it one of the top targets for scammers.

In the past, cybercriminals have been known to pose as Amazon through fake emails and text messages, in a bid to access people’s sensitive data – like usernames, passwords, and bank details.

The most common trick that crooks use sees people receive fake messages informing them of a product ordered, which needs con rmation before shipping. Scammers then attempt to dupe customers into passing over

bank details.

In some instances, hackers have managed to install software on devices to complete orders. Shoppers are being advised to fully verify their orders by logging into their Amazon accounts in the event that they see any unexpected messages. According to Amazon, only legitimate purchases will appear in your order history.

If you receive a message telling you to ‘act now’ or ‘act fast’ it could be a sign that you’ve been contacted by a scammer. Logging in to your Amazon account to refresh your memory on past orders can help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Rojales trials organic collection

The Rojales City Council will increase the recycling service at the beginning of next year by adding a new brown container for biodegradable waste generated in homes and commercial establishments.

With these new containers the municipality will have a complete network for the separation of glass, papercardboard, plastics and general waste. There is also provision for the disposal of oil and textile/clothing deposits as well as shoes.

The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, explained that “for all this expensive and complex citizen and environmental service to work, everyone’s collaboration and help is needed. No matter how much e ort is made from this council, if there is no public awareness and action, it will be of no use, we will waste the economic resources allocated for this purpose and our environment will not bene t at all.”

The new brown containers are only for the disposal of organic waste of animal and vegetable origin such as fruit and vegetables, meat and sh, egg shells,

nuts, shell sh, corks, co ee grounds and infusions, paper and cardboard stained with remains. food, small remains of wood, sawdust, matches, as well as small remains of gardening and pruning.

The Councillor for the Environment, Rosario López, said that the environmental action will begin as a pilot programme with the installation across the municipality of 86 1,100-liter containers that will be located in the current “recycling islands”, 29 medium-sized 240 litres for restaurants, supermarkets and school canteens. Finally, 3,000 10-liter containers for domestic use will be provided to residents who request it.

An environmental education team has been carrying out awareness and information campaigns in various parts of the municipality for several months. In addition to informing about the bene ts that recycling gives to the planet, the team has been handing out three bags of di erent colours for the separation of waste and people have been able to register to be part of the pilot scheme.

Eight-million-euro counterfeiter arrested on the Costa Blanca

A man described as a ‘master counterfeiter’ and ‘one of the best counterfeiters in Europe’ by police, has been arrested. The man and his associates are accused of forging 500euro notes.

Twelve arrests have been made in the Costa Blanca and Valencia areas over several months, after the printing press was located in La Nucia. The gang is believed to have been responsible for more than eight million euros in fake notes, the largest scam of its kind in Europe.

The gang used high quality paper, imported from China to make the money and specialised equipment was found by o cers when the premises were raided.

A number of companies acted as fronts for the criminals with police visiting two registered o ces in Altea and two in Picassent. Their rms also conspired to hide the identities of the counterfeiters. The operation was led by the Mossos d’Esquadra acting for the investigating Barcelona area court, in association with the Policia Nacional.

Spanish airport strike called off

Planned strike action by workers at Spanish airport operator Aena for over Christmas and New Year has been called o after the company agreed to reinstate an annual bonus, union CCOO has said. Agreement was reached on December 14 with the national ministry of transport, the dispute having been about non-payment of productivity pay bonuses.

Workers a liated to CCOO had planned to strike on 22nd, 23rd, 30th and 31st December and on 5th and 6th January to demand a bonus that was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company will resume paying an annual bonus in 2023 in two instalments in January and March, the union said. Soaring consumer prices have pushed Spanish unions to press sometimes reluctant employers for pay rises, with strike action seen in sectors

including fashion retail and airlines.

The CCOO has the highest worker representation of all unions in the Aena airports authority network of 43 airports and two heliports with 10,000 workers. Other unions had not backed the strike, the CCOO saying that its planned action had been “appropriate as the majority union” and that it had “assumed a very signi cant risk alone” in recovering productivity pay. In the union’s view, “pressure” exerted in the media gave “maximum publicity” to the strike and proved to be “key” in reaching a settlement.

Unlike other European countries, such as Britain, air travellers in Spain were mostly spared airport chaos last summer as Aena’s furlough scheme during the pandemic allowed it to retain most of its workers, so it didn’t face sta shortages when travel picked up again.

Elderly Brit Mugged in San Luis

A 76-year-old British woman was the victim of a violent mugging earlier this week when she was attacked in San Luis. The lady was left with a number of injuries and was shaken and upset by the incident. The pensioner was attacked after she had done her shopping at a near-by supermarket late in the morning.

Significant progress made in talks over Gibraltar

Britain and Spain have made “signi cant progress” in talks over an agreement to secure Gibraltar’s post-Brexit relationship with the European Union, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in Madrid recently.

“Signi cant progress has been made.. including (in) discussions on the text of the treaty and its implementation,” he told reporters at a joint press conference with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.

Although Brexit threw Gibraltar’s future into question, raising fears it would create a

new “hard border” with the EU, negotiators reached a landmark framework deal for it to bene t from the rules of the Schengen zone just hours before Britain’s departure from the bloc on 1st January, 2021.

Negotiators from Britain, Spain and the EU have been meeting to thrash out the details of the agreement in order to ensure freedom of movement along the border of this tiny British enclave, which is located at Spain’s southern tip.

“We were discussing how this could unleash an unprecedented level of economic growth for all

those in the region,” the British minister said after several hours of talks with Albares, which were to carry on into the evening.

“We are fully invested in agreeing a deal as soon as possible,” he added, expressing con dence it was possible “to agree a treaty that protects our respective positions on sovereignty”.

Gibraltar’s economy provides a lifeline for some 15,000 people who cross in and out to work every day, most of whom are Spanish and live in the impoverished neighbouring city of La Linea.

Airport parking scam busted

Four people from an o -site parking company suspected of operating a scam at AlicanteElche airport have been arrested by the National Police. A force spokesman said more than 100

vehicles were identi ed and state airport operator Aena has been defrauded out of around 6,000 euros in parking fees. The cars were left at the airport, not o site, and then a front

driver with a ticket would drive through the barrier and several other vehicles would follow closely behind so they didn’t have to pay.

Christmas Toy Appeal

If you’re a regular reader of the Costa Blanca People, or a TKO Radio listener, you’ve probably already heard about the San José Obrero orphanage. The orphanage caters for around 60 children from the age of 5 to 18 housed in two residence units in Orihuela and Elche. There are also several children in a day facility who go home in the evening time as well as a temporary foster care facility. In addition, there is transitional accommodation for older teenagers who do not have family support in order to help them cope with the evolution to adulthood and independence.

The orphanage is run by the church and most of the children both live and are educated there. In

spite of this, the orphanage does not receive support from the state and is always looking for help from the public.

In the spirit of Christmas and ‘children helping children’, Willow International School is once again this year running a Christmas Gift Appeal in association with TKO Radio and the Costa Blanca People. They are asking students’ families and members of the public in general to add an extra item to their Christmas shopping lists this year.

School Principal Amanda Riding told the Costa Blanca People “We buy so much at Christmas and many of us are lucky that we are able to purchase lovely gifts for our friends and loved ones. I’m asking our families and

friends this year that perhaps when they are shopping for their family or heading out to buy their o ce Secret Santa that they add another special item to their Christmas lists –to buy a toy for a child in need.”

Amanda explained that the Gift Appeal will be advertised on TKO Radio and in the Costa Blanca People throughout the festive season saying “We’ve had such wonderful support from the local media and I am very grateful to TKO and to the Costa Blanca People for publicising this for us. As a community, the expats have always been so supportive of charity appeals and I think everyone will agree that making sure these children have a special gift at Christmas time is a very worthy

cause indeed.”

To support the Gift Appeal, all you need to do is to buy a gift, wrap it and drop if o at one of the drop o points (listed below).

The toys must be brand new but can be of any size and cost all gifts will be most gratefully received.

The deadline for all gifts to be dropped o is Monday December 19th.

While younger children will be delighted with toys, older children might perhaps like some toiletries, Christmas sweets or goodies, or even a voucher in order to go shopping in the sales. Fundraiser for the orphanage Lyn Adams said, “The children are always in need of basic items, clothes and toiletries.”

Spanish award-winning beer

Mahou is Spain’s most distinguished beer with 320 di erent awards since 2018, with 98 medals awarded in 2022 alone. The accolades have been clocked up in some of the most prestigious international competitions.

The annual Brand Footprint report claims Mahou is Spain’s ‘most appreciated’ make, having earned special mentions at 16 global beer events and netted over 320 prizes in the past ve years. In fact, it has been named top brand in Spain continuously since 2018 inclusive, something Mahou-San Miguel marketing director Emmanuel Pouey says is ‘a source of great pride’ for the company.

“This is especially true when you consider that the beer industry is in constant evolution,” Pouey admits. “Ending the year by achieving our ongoing aim of being the best is what spurs us on to continue producing the highest-quality products ahead of 2023.”

Among the awards Mahou has collected are 32 medals from nine di erent countries for its Cinco Estrellas label, and its alcohol-free version – the Mahou 0,0 Tostada – is once again one of its most-distinguished products, netting eight prizes. Mahou’s ‘premium’ varieties, the Maestra and Barrica, have each earned around a dozen awards.

Now 132 years old, the company was founded in

a country of grapegrowing and wine-producing tradition, where beer and ale were not mainstream until well into the 20th century.

Mahou bought out the global brand San Miguel in the year 2000, incorporating the label into its name and becoming the largest beer manufacturer in Spain in the 21st century.

Beer only started to be noticed in Spain after Mahou began collecting international awards and mentioning these on the bottle labels – but once it caught on, sales were so buoyant that the family decided to stop producing its dyes and varnishes and focus entirely on ales and ice. Mahou ceased its production of ice cubes in the 1970s, by which time the rm had become a national trailblazer, paving the way for numerous other brands of beer to set up successfully in Spain.

Christmas consumer voucher campaign

Almoradí Town Hall has launched the Christmas Campaign of consumer vouchers “Almoradí valex2”, which as explained by the mayor of Development, Carmen Berná, “is carried out with the aim of promoting local commerce in the municipality, which in turn involves actively collaborating in the revival of the local economy”.

According to the councillor the campaign, in which the vouchers in this case will be obtained through the website created for the occasion www. bonosconsumoalmoradi.es,

starts from this Wednesday, December 14, at 10 am, by entering the requested data, after which you will receive a con rmation email, once registered, and with the only requirement to be registered and be over 18 years, may go to the shops participating in the campaign and make their purchases showing the original ID card, being the deadline for consumption from 19 to 24 December.

The voucher issued has a value of €20, with a minimum purchase of €40 being necessary

to redeem it.

For her part, the Mayoress of Almoradí stressed the importance of boosting the local economy through the promotion of local establishments, encouraging consumption and strengthening the image of the municipality, in this case through a campaign funded 100% by the Provincial Council of Alicante with 120,000 euros, which together with the contribution of consumers means a minimum economic contribution of 240,000 euros for trade and hospitality.

C.L.A.R.O advances date Ordinary General Assembly

On 8 December CL.A.R.O. held its 16th General Assembly, having advanced the date from November next year to take account of the Orihuela municipal elections to be held in May, 2023. The Assembly was informed of the main activities of the party over the past year, updated the membership of key organs of the party and debated the political situation and C.L.A.R.O’S options in relation to its participation in next year’s local elections.

CLARO Executive Committee

The report on activities highlighted the de facto end of its coalition with Cambiemos Orihuela who supported the motion of censure in April bringing about a change of government without having informed C.L.A.R.O. Notwithstanding this major political development, during the past year C.L.A.R.O. has been engaged in a vast range of activities in close cooperation with neighbourhood associations in particular the Association of Vecinos de Cabo Roig and Lomas (AVCRL) dedicated to the improvement of basic services and civic facilities of bene t to Orihuela Costa. These included the disastrous state of street cleaning in Orihuela Costa, e orts to improve the maintenance of parks and gardens, roads and pavements, improvements to health care, and the system of collection and treatment of sewage. C.L.A.R.O., in cooperation with FAOC (Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa) devoted considerable e orts to advance the realisation of a multi-cultural centre

and Library. C.L.A.R.O’S continuing e orts to save Cala Mosca from the environmental destruction of the construction of 2,200 new houses and apartments were evidenced by a legal complaint, still under consideration, concerning the abandonment by the Developer of the protection of the two endangered species in Cala Mosca. C.L.A.R.O actively supported the work of the Platform Save Cala Mosca which submitted a new petition to the European Parliament as well as organising several events to mobilise public opinion. Finally C.L.AR.O supported the newly created Association for Culture in Orihuela Costa (ACOC) and its programme of activities during the summer.

Although in the present lamentable situation of the state of street cleaning in Orihuela Costa, despite the promise by the new coalition government of a shock plan to clean up the coast, and the collapse of the contracts for maintenance of parks and gardens and repair of streets, the Assembly recognised that thanks to the combined e orts of C.L.A.R.O and the principal neighbourhood associations on the coast over the past years, progress has been made on a number of issues which will contribute signi cantly to the wellbeing of residents of Orihuela Costa. These include:

The opening of the Emergency Services Centre with local police service 24 hours a day

A project for the construction of a multi-cultural auditorium and Library with its site and budget

decided leaving it only to be put out to tender

• The reception and reform of 8 parks in Pau 20, La Ciñuelica and their future maintenance

• Tender issued for work centre in Pau 26, of interest to several urbanisations, for street cleaning activities including o ces and vehicle location and cleaning in an environmentally acceptable complex

• An investment of €5.5m in the system of collection and treatment of sewage

A provisional budget for a cemetery for Orihuela Costa and the commitment to seek a suitable location

The location on a 24 h basis of a medical ambulance (SAMU) in Orihuela Costa and the decision to enlarge the existing Health Centre in Cabo Roig

• The NON-CONSTRUCTION still of 2,200 houses and apartments in Cala Mosca, in large part due to 12 years of struggle by C.L.A.R.O, with a reasonably positive prospect of saving this emblematic area of Orihuela Costa

In relation to C.L.A.R.O’S political strategy, the Assembly considered the political situation. The new coalition government of PSOE and Ciudadanos is failing to achieve its objectives of breaking the political deadlock and approving an overdue budget. Its supporting partner Cambiemos is increasingly distancing itself from the government. Ciudadanos faces political annihilation at the national

level and huge losses in Orihuela. This is signi cant since Ciudadanos in 2019 was the second most voted party in Orihuela Costa (with support from and positions in the Ciudadanos electoral list of former members of C.L.A.R.O. who have now formed a party for the independence of Orihuela Costa). The destination of these votes in 2023 will be important.

The Popular Party is seeking to overcome its internal di erences and return to power next year, but is engaged in competition for votes with Vox.

In the context of this political instability the Assembly considered C.L.A.R.O’S options. They range from contesting next year’s local elections alone to seeking an electoral alliance with another party. Contesting the election alone presents the problem of crossing the threshold of 5% of the total vote in the municipality, which has always been elusive. Entering an electoral alliance with another party is a real alternative. But it was stressed that such an alliance must be useful, leading to concrete improvements for Orihuela Costa.

In informal contacts with several Orihuela parties they have shown an interest, knowing that C.L.A.R.O has consistently received close to a thousand votes in Orihuela Costa which is the equivalent of one or more councillors given the workings of the voting system. Cambiemos realised this advantage in 2019 and in an electoral alliance with C.L.A.R.O. increased its representation by one councillor, just short of two.

The conclusion of this debate was that given the extent of political uncertainty it was too early to de ne a speci c electoral strategy. C.L.A.R.O should defer a decision until February or March, 2023 and hold an Extraordinary General Meeting then when the political situation should be clearer and the prospects of a useful electoral alliance could be considered.

Finally the Assembly elected a new Executive Committee and Committee of Guarantees as required by the revised law on political parties.

The new and enlarged Executive Committee comprises:

Antonio Cerdan - President

Huberto Canovas – Secretary General

Christian Vanderzeypen - Treasurer

Helene Akerman

Bob Houliston

Bob Hunkin

The Assembly welcomed this enlarged Committee with a balance re ecting the di erent nationalities of the coast and gave a particular welcome to the election of Helene Akerman, former President of the party, anticipating her return to active involvement in local politics. Christian Vanderzeypen, of Belgian nationality, is a long standing member of C.L.A.R.O and with a business background is well quali ed to become Treasurer.

The three members of the Committee of Guarantees are:

Alfonso Crespa

Ana M. Martinez

Jean Jacques Moeschinger

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP

The bank of England raised UK rates yesterday by a further 50bps, moving the base rate to a 14year high of 3.5%. Whilst the 50bps move was completely priced into markets, the 9-member BoE voting pattern was a surprise to markets, given that there appears to be a fairly broad opinion amongst MPC members. Six members voted for the preferred 50bps move, with two opting for no hike and one member thinking that 75bps would be the right choice.

In his post-meeting conference, BoE head Andrew ‘honest’ Bailey said that ‘I know raising interest rates has a real impact on people’s lives, but by raising interest rates we can bring in ation down sooner and help the economy begin to grow and prosper once more.’ The majority of MPC members also suggested that further hikes were likely ‘for a sustainable return of in ation to target.’

The current market-implied terminal (or end) rate from the BoE is at just over 4.5%, a level that has been on the decline of late, as markets reevaluate the impacts of a weakening UK economy, and (thankfully) softening in ation, albeit at the margin for now.

The pound also declined after the BoE, with GBP/USD slipping from a 6-month high at over 1.2440, back to 1.2200. However, we were at that level just this Monday, so the move may well have been driven partly by position squaring as markets reduce risk and portfolio exposures into the holiday season. Next week is dominated by the latest growth gures, with Q3 GDP expected to have declined by 0.2%, as the UK slips into a recession. Indeed, this week’s data highlighted a slight increase in the overall unemployment rate from 3.6 to 3.7% combined with an unexpected jump in the claimant count of 3.5K. With average private sector earnings also increasing sharply, there is a lingering fear that companies will pass on

higher wage costs through price increases, which could keep unwanted pressures on in ation. Next year therefore looks a tough one on paper for the UK economy, even if the pound continues to take its lead from broader dollar moves.

EURO

The ECB may have replicated the moves of the BoE, Fed and SNB this week, when raising Euro area rates by a further 50bps to 2.5%. However, the accompanying language from ECB Head Lagarde was far more hawkish than that of the Fed or BoE, as Lagarde & Co doubled-down on the ECB’s commitment to continue hiking rates, in order to combat surging in ation in the region. Lagarde stressed that ‘we judge that interest rates will still have to rise signi cantly and at a steady pace.’ She went on to say that further hikes of 50bps should be coming for ‘a considerable amount of time.’ That last line really caught our attention.

Markets were themselves caught slightly oguard by the brazen hawkishness of Lagarde, just as much as Lagarde & Co were caught out by the surge in Euro area in ation earlier in the year. However, those who turn-up late to the party are often the last one’s dancing, and the ECB will take our honesty award from the BoE, as they look to continue with their hiking cycle, even though recent data has re ected a slight drop in Euro area in ation. Saying that, both German (11.3%) and Spanish (12.6%) in ation remains sticky, and that may have played a part in the ECB’s rather forceful language yesterday.

The market reaction to the ECB was fairly swift, with yields rising in key Euro area bonds and EUR/ USD brie y moving over 1.0700 for the rst time since the middle of June. Indeed, the gains for the single currency were fairly broad-based, with GBP/ EUR succumbing to Euro strength, and slipping back under 1.1500.

Collecting for Red Cross on the Costa Blanca South

As Christmas is the time for giving, the Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca South are supporting the Red Cross by collecting cleaning products for the home and toiletries for families in their local areas. They are asking customers and local residents to drop in shampoo, shower gel, soap, shaving products, feminine hygiene products and all types of cleaning products for the home. They will be collecting these in the Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia branches of Specsavers Ópticas until the 7th of January.

Lisa James, store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar explains, “We are always ready to support those in need and feel we all need to do our bit. With so many amazing di erent and diverse charities around the Costa Blanca, it’s impossible to support them all, but this Christmas we’ve chosen to support the Red Cross.

Our team have seen rsthand the incredible work that the Red Cross does locally, supporting those that don’t have much, or nd themselves in a situation without a home, or in a very di cult situation. Their dedicated team helps in any way possible, but rely on donations, so we wanted to support them by becoming a drop o point for

items that they are really lacking.

They’ve told us that toiletries and cleaning products are in very high demand and rarely donated, so we are inviting our wonderful customers and local residents to pick up a few extra things when they go shopping and drop them in to store throughout the holiday season.”

Red Cross Guardamar is currently supporting 168 families in their area, a number that has signi cantly increased since the COVID pandemic began. As well as providing food and items such as personal care and cleaning products, they support their families however they need to. This includes visiting isolated and lonely people in their homes, helping to coordinate social services support for their users to make sure they are

getting what they are entitled to, providing school materials for children, paying bills and medication costs for vulnerable families, and much more.

The Red Cross rely on volunteers and nancial donations, as well as donations items to support their families and you can nd out more and make a donation by visiting www.cruzroja.es or you can nd out about Red Cross Guardamar on Facebook @ cruzrojaguardamar.

Please drop in donations of cleaning products and toiletries to Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia. You can drop them o during opening hours until the 7th of January. Find your nearest store by visiting www. specsavers.es

Method

STEP 1

For the pastry, tip the our, spices and butter into a large bowl with a large pinch of salt. Rub together with your ngertips until the mix resembles ne breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. Add the egg and use a cutlery knife to mix everything until the ingredients start to clump together. Tip out onto a lightly oured work surface and knead brie y until you have a smooth dough. Or, pulse the ingredients together in a food processor. Shape into a disc, then wrap and chill for at least 30 mins. Will keep chilled for a day or frozen for three months.

STEP 2

Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. Mix the mincemeat with the ginger and syrup. Roll the pastry out on a lightly oured surface to a 3mm thickness. Stamp out 12 discs using an 8cm biscuit cutter and lightly press into a 12-hole cupcake tin.

STEP 3

Fill each pastry case with 1 tbsp of the mincemeat mixture. Re-roll the pastry scraps and stamp out 12 mini gingerbread people, then place one on top of each pie. Will keep frozen for up to two months.

STEP 4 Bake for 20 mins, or 30 mins from frozen. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 mins, then lift out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar. Will keep in an airtight container for up to four days.

Christmas Punch Ingredients

A bunch of red grapes

750ml prosecco

1l cloudy apple juice

Ice 250ml sloe gin 50ml herbal liqueur

1 ball stem ginger, nely sliced plus 2 tbsp of the syrup

3-4 sprigs rosemary

1 clementine, nely sliced

Method

STEP 1

The day before you want to serve, put the grapes in the freezer for around 8-12 hrs or until frozen. Chill the prosecco and apple juice in the fridge.

STEP 2

When you’re ready to serve, put the frozen grapes and a generous handful of ice in a large 2-3 litre punch bowl and pour all of the remaining ingredients on top. Stir gently to combine, then serve. Sits well for up to 3 hrs before putting the ice in.

Christmas Rocky Road Ingredients

100g butter, cut into cubes, plus extra for the tin

250g Christmas biscuits, such as shortbread or chocolate biscuits

75g shelled nuts (use up a bag of whole nuts, or bits and bobs from the baking cupboard)

100g mixed dried fruit (such as raisins, cherries or glacé ginger)

75g Christmas sweets (candy canes, marshmallows or jelly sweets)

400g milk or plain chocolate (or a mixture of both), chopped

140g golden syrup (weigh this straight into the pan you will use for melting)

2 tbsp sprinkles, or more sweets, to decorate

Method

STEP 1

Butter and line a 20cm square tin, or use a 20cm square silicone mould. Break the biscuits into pieces – they need to be no smaller than a pea, but not too chunky or your rocky road won’t hold together.

STEP 2

Halve any larger nuts either by snapping them or carefully cutting with a knife, then combine them with the biscuits. Halve any large pieces of dried fruit and chop or snap sweets into smaller pieces, then add these to the bowl.

STEP 3

Melt 300g of the chocolate, the butter and the golden syrup carefully in a pan set over a low heat, stirring occasionally, then pour this over the biscuit and nut mixture and mix together so the chocolate covers everything.

STEP 4 Tip the mixture into the tin, then level the top – it doesn’t need to be completely smooth. Melt the remaining chocolate in the microwave in short blasts, or in a heatproof bowl over a small pan of simmering water, then drizzle this over the top and sprinkle with the decorations. Chill for at least 3 hrs or overnight before cutting into squares. Will keep in the fridge for three to four days.

CHRISTMAS

A Great Panto was had by all... oh yes it was!

From the Admiral Benbow pub to the Smugglers Cover WI, who found themselves press ganged into becoming pirates . When a gang of dastardly pirates, dressed in pink tutus, visited the WI to try and get the treasure map, and won the cake baking competition! Then on board The Hispaniola on it’s way to Treasure Island where the whole cast were in a race to nd the hidden treasure, but where had

it gone?? The whole pantomime was fun, fun, fun.

After all the songs were sung, the dances danced by the fantastic Crazy Ladies and the ghosts all frightened o , the cast had absolutely the best time entertaining a fantastic audience during the three performances at The Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. The Rojales Pantomime Group would like to thank everyone who bought

tickets and we hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed performing it. The Stroke Association and other local charities will bene t from all your generousity.

All the cast, lighting, music and backstage crew, who worked extremely hard, would like to wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and we look forward to entertaining you again next year.... Oh yes we do!!

When my wife and I retired to Spain we enjoyed cheap living. Today is a different story, and although we are getting by, we are not living the life we once did. We find we are having to watch the pennies, and look at prices in the supermarkets before we buy anything. We have savings, which we have never had to touch but now we are finding that we have to transfer funds from the UK at the end of the month to continue to live here. We can’t afford to go

back to the UK, nor do we wish to; the situation there is much worse and it is much more expensive to live, but we can no longer manage on our pension.

Newspapers and magazines are addressing the cost of living crisis, and are full of money saving tips, which are useful, however there is only so much we can do to cut back and save money. Someone I know is using their two spare rooms to make money, and renting them

out. This idea may not be for everyone, however this lady has found two very suitable lodgers who are her own age, and are quiet and respectful. She has put a kitchenette in the rooms with running water, fridge with cooker rings and microwave, and has a bathroom upstairs for the lodgers to use; while she has her own ensuite. If you are going to do this, you would benefit from consulting someone about rental agreements and take references, to make sure you choose someone suitable, and advise you of your rights, and also theirs.

Benejúzar will connect the town centre with 2km cycle route

Benejúzar will connect the town centre with leisure areas and the Industrial Estate by means of a 2 km cycle lane.

The project has a grant of 150,000 euros from the Generalitat Valenciana, within the call for actions to promote sustainable mobility.

Benejúzar. 12 December 2022

The Benejúzar Town Hall will improve the connection between the town centre with leisure areas and the Industrial Estate, by creating a cycle lane that will be two kilometres long. The project

has been subsidised by the Generalitat Valenciana with 150,000 euros, within the call to promote actions to encourage sustainable mobility of local entities included in the Vega Renhace Plan. The total cost of the work will be 181,500 euros.

The aim is to create cycle routes and improve the connection of various areas of the municipality. Speci cally, the project includes work on four di erent routes. The rst includes works on the access path to the IES Benejúzar and leisure area; a second itinerary on Calle del Término and

Maestro Bernabé; a third in the area around the skate park, and the last on Calle Virgen del Pilar. The route will cover practically the entire municipality, from one end to the other.

The mayoress, Rosa García, explained that “this is a project that considerably extends the bicycle lanes that existed in the municipality, and what we have done is to join them together to make one long lane”. In this sense, the mayor assured that “with this project we are making this route more attractive for lovers of sport and cycling”.

battery life on my new mobile phone?”

TAs the batteries in our electronics endure daily wear and tear, their ability to hold a charge becomes weaker and weaker—leaving us with a dead smartphone or a low laptop battery life at the worst possible moment.

There’s a simple explanation for why this happens. “The life of a lithium-ion battery is generally 500 cycles (about a year and a half). A battery cycle is measured by one full charge of 0 to 100. So, the more full cycles your phone goes through, the sooner you have to change it,”

It could be very useful: maybe you want to drop in reminders, save recipes, or keep a shopping list. But you could use it for whatever you like – no one else can see your chat.

Better still, you can pin your personal chat to the top of your WhatsApp so you can easily access your one-sided conversation at any time.

You should only be partially charging your phone to slow down the depletion of your battery’s life cycle. Ideally, keep your battery charged between 25-85%. Don’t let your phone’s battery drain completely to zero, and when charging it, only let it reach about 85 per cent and then unplug it.

Explore your device’s Settings for battery-saving options. Some phones have a “smart charge” option which limits charging to 80%.

Making Christmas special for the children from San Jose orphanage

On Monday December 12, the gifts and selection boxes from the amazingly generous people of Pinar de Campoverde were picked up by the orphanage and taken on their way ready for the children on Christmas Day.

Each year, Overseas Stores (Iceland) places trolleys by the tills in the store for people to place donated selection boxes and other Christmas sweets. The Shoe Box gift appeal is

organised by Beryl Aguado, assisted by the Portobello Walking Football Club and Campoverde Church.

This year there was a record 381 items of sweets (mainly selection boxes) and around 150 gift boxes. This is a tremendous amount and we can only imagine the delight of the children on Christmas morning.

Thank you to everyone

involved: Andrea and the sta of Iceland for persuading so many people to put something in the trolley; to Beryl for organising the Gift Box Appeal; to Celcius Hair and Beauty for being a drop-o point for the Gift Boxes; and to everyone who donated.

Campoverde Church in the Community is delighted to take part and support the community in helping those less fortunate than us.

8 Essential makeup hacks everyone should know

Use concealer as an eyeshadow primer

Eyeshadow primer is crucial when preventing your vibrant eyeshadow from smudging, fading, transferring, creasing, or all of the above. But when we run out of product or we’re trying to travel lightly, concealer can come to the rescue. The skin-colored product can help provide a neutral base for your shadows, while also giving the pigment something to stick to. Use powder to keep your lipstick in

place Place a tissue on top of your lips and simply powder your lips over the tissue.

That’s it. Before you know it, whether you opted for a crimson red or a more natural neutral, your puckered pout is going to stay put.

Use contact solution to revive your mascara

Dipping your mascara into the tube, only to reveal a dried-out cakey product

is the opposite of ideal. Instead of instantly running to the store to grab a new one, try squeezing a few drops of contact solution into the product. Within seconds, the shelf-life of your now revived mascara will be able to give you spider-like lashes for (at least a few more) days.

Exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush

For soft and smooth lips, exfoliation is key. Gently brush your toothbrush over

your lips a few times and follow that up with your favorite hydrating lip balm. Not only will the scrub slough o dead skin, but it will also reveal a natural, rosy color—no makeup needed. But, if you do feel fancy and want to sport a bright matte lip, your lips will be ready to roll— and there won’t be any akiness. Use your products for a multitude of purposes

While this might seem silly, it’s such a

life-changing hack. Don’t have a colored lipstick on you, but have a powder blush? Swirl the product on your palm, grab your favorite lip balm, and mix them together. No highlighter? No problem. Take your lip gloss and put a small amount on the high points of your face. No eyeshadow? Grab your bronzer and layer it on your lids until you get the desired color. Makeup is multi-purpose. Use it to your advantage.

The four best and worst Christmas foods for fertility

Christmas turkey could help to boost fertility for couples.

But they may want to think about going easy on the pigs in blankets and hiding the sherry out of sight.

The traditional turkey contains iron, and evidence suggests iron boosts fertility in women, according to fertility specialist Dr Gillian Lockwood, in advice on how to eat this festive season for couples trying to conceive.

A handful of festive nuts is good for men trying to get their partner pregnant, as nuts contain zinc and selenium, which are good for sperm.

Brussels sprouts are a good idea because they contain folates, which is important for preventing birth defects during pregnancy, and the reason why women are advised to take folic acid while they are trying to get pregnant.

However Dr Lockwood advises those trying to start a family against drinking at Christmas, as if a woman is already pregnant and has not realised it, the public health advice is not to consume alcohol at all.

Pigs in blankets contain processed meat, which is high in calories, and are less lean than

turkey.

Decadent deserts may look delicious, but are often ultraprocessed.

These last two options may also be problematic because they run the risk of people piling on too many pounds at Christmas.

Obesity in both men and women reduces the chances of them conceiving, as numerous studies have shown.

don’ts they may like to consider.’

It is unclear how much of a role nutrition plays in conception, compared to more signi cant factors like age and obesity, and evidence can be uncertain because people who eat healthily tend to do other healthy things, like staying slim and exercising regularly, which are good for fertility.

However there are key nutrients which are known to help improve sperm, and overall healthy people are likely to be more fertile.

For couples trying to conceive, Dr Lockwood advises against raw meat and eggs, which can lead to food poisoning, with illness likely to reduce the changes of pregnancy.

Dr Lockwood, whose clinic made history by producing the rst baby from a frozen egg in the UK in 2002, and who is providing advice on behalf of the company Fertility Family, said: ‘Good pre-pregnancy and pregnancy nutrition requires consideration of what the mother to be and her baby need.

‘For those trying to conceive - and who are not prepared to wait until next year - there are some clear culinary dos and

But the good news for Christmas Day is that cranberry sauce contains antioxidants, which is good for general health, so may bene t fertility.

Vegetarians and vegans can feast on a nut roast instead of turkey, bene ting from the vitamins and minerals they contain.

Meanwhile walnuts are a good snack for men as they boost sperm vitality, and roasted chestnuts may also have fertility bene ts for men.

When will warning triangles be replaced?

Warning triangles have been mandatory in Spain since 1999. However, this device has its days numbered, being replaced by an alternative, safer to operate, electronic warning system.

Known technically as the V-16, a ashing orange warning light can now be used instead of warning triangles in the event of an emergency, such as a breakdown, for example.

There are two main bene ts to consider that these new ashing lights have over their triangle relatives. Firstly, they are easier to see at night and at a greater distance, and secondly, they do not require the driver to walk along a potentially dangerous road in order to warn of the scene.

With the new lights, you simply switch them on, and then place them on the highest point of the vehicle, most likely the roof, then

get yourself to a place of safety, of course, still wearing your high visibility vest, which will remain mandatory.

As these new devices are developing, the more modern versions, which the DGT says will shortly be available in stores, will also have geolocation abilities, and will ultimately be able to communicate with live mapping services, thus providing a greater warning of the presence of a hazard.

Although these new devices can be used now instead of triangles, after a change in the law in July 2021, they will become mandatory in the future. As from 1 January 2026, the warning lights will completely replace warning triangles in Spain.

As of that date, the only way allowed to signal breakdowns or incidents will be the V-16 signal,

with its geolocation, thus, as mentioned, ensuring that a report of the vehicle reaches the DGT 3.0 website in a timely manner.

In turn, this information will be forwarded to other drivers on the road.

Among the additional advantages of this new system is its optical system that allows a fairly wide eld of visibility. That is, up to 360 degrees horizontally and a minimum of ±8 degrees up and down. At the same time, it has a light intensity that can be maintained for 30 minutes.

If you have one of these devices already, and when you do obtain one in the future, it will become important to add the checking of the light to a regular routine, as they are battery powered, and so it is important to make sure they function in case you need to use it.

Discounts for tra fic fines

If you commit a minor tra c o ence in Spain, you will most likely receive a ne, some incur the loss of points, and in most cases the actual amount you pay can be reduced by 50% if you admit the o ence and pay promptly, for the majority of nes.

The ability to receive a 50% discount was introduced in 2009, so long as you pay the ne within 20 days. You do however lose that ability in the event that you oppose or appeal. As the DGT explains, if you agree with the sanction, pay it as soon as possible and bene t from a 50% discount. If you do not agree or there is an error, you can appeal or claim a refund of the payment. Remember, if you do, you lose the right to the 50% reduction.

In the case of a ne from the DGT, you have the possibility to pay it in the voluntary period. Said period includes the rst 20 calendar days from when the complaint was noti ed to you and, in most cases, implies a 50% reduction in the amount of the ne.

Once these 20 days of the voluntary period have passed, the ordinary period begins.

In this ordinary period, which extends up to 45 days after receiving the noti cation, you can make the payment of the ne at any time. In this case you must pay 100% of the amount of the same.

Once the ordinary term has elapsed, the sanction will pass to the State Tax Administration Agency, which will be in charge of collecting it with a 20% surcharge.

Because at the same time that a reduction in the amount of the ne was o ered, the o ender was forced, in the same article of the reform of the law, to renounce other rights. In other words, if you wanted to save 50 percent of the amount of the ne, you should say goodbye to other alternatives that you could legally have to defend your actions.

This is seen as a bene cial system for both sides, the o ender saves money by admitting guilt and paying promptly, and the DGT saves on the cost of ling the case further through the judicial

process.

In 2021, the DGT broke all records for collection of nes, reaching 444 million euro in revenue. A gure that surely would not have been achieved with the previous system of sanctions. Of course, that gure also implies that there were a record number of people caught committing an o ence.

It should also be noted however that if you are caught with a radar detector, or radar jammer in your vehicle, which are now illegal to own, whereas they were previously only illegal to use, the discount is not applied.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT

Every football quiz book in the world needs a small edit now. Who is the only player to score a hattrick in a World Cup Final and actually win it?

You had to feel a bit for Sir Geo Hurst as Kylian Mbappe dispatched his second penalty and third goal of the game on Sunday night - France’s number 10 had hauled his country back into it from nowhere. No longer can Sir Geo get a corporate gig based o the fact that he, and he alone, was the man who scored three goals in a World Cup Final (even if one of them probably didn’t go in). It’s going to hit him in the pocket, no doubt.

It has all become clear as to why Lionel Messi has failed to win a World Cup up until this point as well - for some reason, it was not allowed whilst he and Diego Maradona were on this Earth at the same time. The rst World Cup since Diego departed? Messi is jigging around Qatar holding the trophy he wanted most.

There were quite a few similarities to Maradona’s nest work of art tooArgentina leading 2-0? Tick. Argentina bottling it and letting the opponent get it back to two each? Tick. Argentina taking the lead again with their little left-footed genius being instrumental? Tick. The similarities with 1986 ended there though, as France found another equaliser and took it to penalties.

Many will dislike Emi Martinez’s antics in the shootout but they worked - the weirdest thing is that Aston Villa now have a current World Cupwinner in their squad. How has that happened?

More important than who actually won the thing in Qatar is that Gareth Southgate has decided to stay on as England manager. Given the utter lack of alternatives and the fact that he’s done a pretty good job (despite so many nay-sayers still being convinced anything other than winning both

the Euros and the World Cup is total failure) this is good news.

Southgate probably thought of it like a house you’ve renovated, made look pretty nice after it was a total wreck when you bought it. You then sell the house and the new owners undo all the good work you’ve done over the last few years and suddenly it looks worse than when you bought it originally. Yes, that’s probably how he made his decision to stay.

With all the World Cup malarky disrupting the usual European rhythm of football, we’ve barely noticed that the transfer window opens in a matter of days.

No doubt, many transfer rumours from the summer will resurfa… what’s this? Man United are interested in Frenkie de Jong? And Frenkie fancies trading Barcelona for Manchester? This one is bound to be done and dusted quickly, no? De Jong has probably had a look at United not being as rubbish as they were before Erik ten Hag

started sorting them out, noticed that Cristiano has been sacked and reckons it might not be that bad in the North after all.

Chelsea and Liverpool are keen to strengthen their respective mid elds and have been searching high and low at the World Cup to nd a solution - and would you look at that, one was hiding in the Premier League in plain sight. Both would like to take Moises Caicedo o Brighton’s hands for a wedge of cash. Liverpool also noticed that So an Amrabat of Morocco is too good to be playing for Fiorentina and are in danger of making the Karel Poborsky-shaped error of signing a player o the back of a decent tournament.

Antonio Conte, a genuine purveyor of a mid eld destroyer, is also very interested in taking Amrabat to White Hart Lane.

King Klopp needs to do something in mid eld as his top two options, Jude Bellingham and World Cup winner

Enzo Fernandes are (a) unlikely to be available in January and (b) unlikely to join Liverpool.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka could not slide further down the pecking order at Old Tra ord which means he’d probably be open to a return to Crystal Palace or even West Ham where the ga er knows a thing or two about failing at United.

There will be plenty happening at Man United, obviously, and Ten Hag would like to snag France’s Marcus Thuram just as soon as he is over Sunday night’s trauma and Cody Gakpo - someone who also managed to boost their price tag in Qatar.

Finally, Chelsea are not put o by Croatia’s Josip Gvardiol’s inability to put the shoulder in a 5ft 5 old man down by the touchline and would gladly part with €80m+ to take him to Stamford Bridge.

So that’s it folks - proper football returns after Christmas as shall I. And no, the EFL Cup doesn’t count.

Imanyo Golf Society “Ted Adams Trophy”, 30th November at Altorreal

Many thanks to Ted and Ann Adams for their sponsorship for the last eight years.

This was our last competition for 2022 with player of the year still to be decided? We had a good turnout with 26 players, not bad for this time of year for our visit to Altorreal where the course was in excellent condition. The day started o chilly but ended up perfect for golf with the sun shining making a pleasant 73 degrees with most players still in shorts, the format for the day was full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

Winner of the Ted Adams Trophy was the “Irish Invader” Phillip Naughton from group A with a handicap cutting score of 44 points, runner up was Lee George, also with a handicap cutting score of 41 points, third place went to “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns with 35 points. Winner

of group B was “Mr Blackpool Rock” Ian Chetwynd with 40 points, runner up was “Sat Nav” Steve Day with 38 points and third place was on count back with “Hammer” Gary Smith and went to Chris Russell with 33 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 8 Steve Hopkins, hole 15 Lee George, hole 18 Paul Crump, group B hole 4 “young Man” Colin Pepperday, hole 12 “Mr Blackpool Rock” Ian Chetwynd, hole 17 Chris Russell. Best front nine went to Steve Hopkins with 20 points and best back nine went to “Hammer” Gary Smith also with 20 points. The Two’s pot was shared between “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns and “Irish Invader” Phillip Naughton both on hole

17 winning €30.00 each.

The Football card was won by “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with Swansea winning €40 and raising €40 for our chosen charities of 2022.

We would like to thank Antonio and sta at Imanyo’s for great food and hospitality.
