Government invests millions to prevent local flood devastation

An investment of 343 million euros is to be made to prevent ooding across the Vega Baja. The government’s ve-year initiative comes after the devastation wreaked on the area during the 2019 DANA storm.

The September storm saw the River Segura burst its banks in several places as water rose to unprecedented levels and drainage channels struggled to cope with the torrential rains. More than 3,500 people were evacuated over

three days, many losing their homes and possessions permanently. Seven people lost their lives and the storm left a trail of destruction with around 2 billion euros worth of damage.

Under the new ood prevention plans 11 projects will be undertaken to ensure the water drainage system will be able to cope with pro-longed periods of heavy rain.

Work will include improving the defences in the Rambla de Abanilla and its connection with the river Segura as well increasing its over ow capacity into the Santomera reservoir. The ooding across Orihuela in 2019 was mainly caused by the Rambla de Abanilla drainage channel, which was overwhelmed and unable to cope with the stormwater and so is a vital focus for the investment.

In addition, 107 million euros will be spent on annual ood prevention measures including the maintenance

of riverbeds, the clearance of channels, and removal of sediments.

On top of that, a further €80 million has been allocated to create lamination zones and dykes in the Sierra de Albatera, Crevillente, Orihuela, and Callosa de Segura to prevent the risk of ooding. A stormwater storage area will also created to serve Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar.

Orihuela robbers arrested

Four men, all with a criminal record for robbery, have been remanded in custody after being arrested for several robberies in an exclusive urbanisation in Orihuela.

During December the Civil Guard detected an increase in the number of robberies at homes in a speci c area, all carried out with a similar modus operandi. O cers increased their surveillance and patrols in order to catch the culprits.

It wasn´t too long before the measures paid o and a call reported a robbery in progress. O cers rushed to the scene and the evidence suggested the same gang. Patrols scoured the streets, and thanks to the o cers’ expertise and knowledge of the area a suspicious vehicle with four occupants was spotted.

The suspects, when they were surprised at the house had ed in a vehicle at high speed, but before trying to hide objects they had stolen in

bushes.

The vehicle was stopped, and the occupants were still carrying one of the items stolen in the home robbery, in addition to the tools used. Thanks to this item, o cers were able to prove they were in the property. In addition, police were able to link the gang to another robbery committed that night in another house in the same urbanisation.

All four members of the gang were arrested for a continuous crime of robbery and belonging to a criminal group. The men are aged between 27 and 44 years of age and are of Moldovan and Romanian nationality. All had a criminal record for crimes similar to those being investigated.

The members of the gang, together with the recovered objects, have been made available to Orihuela Investigating Court No. 2, which has ordered the entire criminal group to be imprisoned.

Woman jumps from balcony to escape partner

A woman tried to leave her home by climbing over the balcony after her partner, with whom she was having an argument, stopped her from leaving by the door.

The Civil Guard arrested a man at dawn on Sunday in Guardamar del Segura after the incident. The events occurred around 5am when a patrol found the woman who had fallen from a rst- oor balcony while trying to leave the house and escape her partner.

The woman a 32 year-old Ukrainian, was treated by a SAMU ambulance and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. O cers arrested a 35 year old Spanish man for a crime of ill-treatment in the family environment.

Big plans for St Patrick’s Parade 10th Anniversary

The St Patrick’s Day Parade in Cabo Roig has become one of the highlights of the local events calendar and attracts visitors from around the world. This year the Parade will be bigger and better than ever as it celebrates its 10th Anniversary on Friday 17th March.

Fundraising for the event is already underway and the committee has announced that Anthony Molloy will

lead the Saint Patrick Day Parade. His career has spanned more than 20 years, with 123 appearances for Donegal.

Anthony was the captain of the Donegal team that scooped the All Ireland football trophy in 1992. He has an Under 21 All Ireland medal for 1982, three Ulster titles and an All Star accolade. His home club was Ard an Ratha and he has recently published

his autobiography. Anthony is now a Councillor with Donegal County Council.

A statement from the Parade Committee said: “It’s a great honour for us in Cabo Roig to have Anthony as the Grand Marshal of our anniversary parade and the ninth largest parade outside of Ireland. This year we are putting together a very colourful

Spanish tourism shows full recovery

According to the Exceltur tourism association, Spain’s income from tourism activity surged in 2022, surpassing levels last seen before the Covid-19 pandemic. The association, an ‘Alliance for Excellency in Tourism’, is formed by the chairmen of 33 leading Spanish tourist groups and is considered a leading tourism industry body.

In its latest report the Association claims that last year’s tourism earnings reached an estimated €159 billion, an increase of 1.4 percent on 2019, beating expectations notably in the second half of the year, marking a ‘full recovery of tourism activity in Spain’.

Although the gures showed the tourism sector accounted for 12.2 percent of the Spanish economy last year, it remained slightly lower than the 12.6 percent registered in 2019.

“In contrast to the many predictions to the contrary, which were proved wrong during the second half, 2022 marked the full recovery of tourism activity in Spain,” it said in a statement.

After a ‘dazzling surge in tourist numbers’ last summer, Spain had expressed con dence it would achieve a full recovery in the hope of regaining its pre-pandemic status as the world’s second-favourite holiday destination behind France. The recovery was largely driven by national tourism which saw a ‘signi cant increase … that started in April’.

Although the number of foreign visitors was 14.6 percent lower than in

2019, spending only fell by 3.8 percent between January and November, with the lower numbers o set by longer stays and a trend towards buying premium tourist products. The most popular regions for foreign visitors were the sunny beaches of the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Andalusia.

Tourism is a strategic sector for Spain, and it had been the second most visited country in the world in 2019, receiving 83.7m visitors during the full year. The number of foreign tourists who visited during 2020, however, fell by over 80 percent to 19 million, the lowest gure since 1969. Around 31.1 million international tourists visited Spain during 2021. The Spanish government had hoped to see 45 million foreign visitors in 2021, around half the prepandemic gure.

Migrant deaths decrease in 2022

A Spanish non-pro t organisation has announced that the number of migrants who died or were reported missing whilst trying to reach Spain last year was 2,390, a decrease on 2021 but in line with gures over the past ve years.

Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) said that the gure included 288 women and 101 children. It is believed that 1,784 of the migrants died while trying to reach Spain’s Canary Islands by boat. But the migrant rights group also raised alarm

over the ‘invisibility’ of an increasingly popular route from Algeria to Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast which includes the local beaches of the Alicante Province. At least 464 people died trying to reach Europe on this route in 2022, it said.

Caminando Fronteras compiles its own gures, using information from families of migrants and rescue statistics. The International Organization for Migration, which uses o cial gures, has said that 2,556 people lost their lives trying

to reach Europe as whole last year, of whom 1,126 were on the Western Africa and Atlantic route and 260 in the Western Mediterranean — the routes to Spain.

The number of irregular migrants arriving in Spain decreased by 25.6 percent in 2022, according to Interior Ministry gures, from 41,945 in 2021 to 31,219 in 2022. However, illegal overland arrivals at Spain’s border points with Morocco in the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in northern Africa rose 24.1 percent.

A new initiative o ering guided tours and gourmet culinary tastings at the Torrevieja salt ats has been launched. This new gastronomic experience will begin with a private visit to the salt lakes to learn about its thousand-year history and the di erent types of salt, focusing on its culinary uses. A master craftsman will prepare di erent types of salts on site, which will then be tasted by visitors. The experience will end with the spectacular sunset behind the pink lagoon.

Oldest person in the world is Spanish

A Spanish great-grandmother who was born in the United States has likely become the world’s oldest living person at 115, according to a Guinness World Records consultant.

Maria Branyas Morera is believed to have assumed the title following the death of French nun Lucile Randon aged 118. Guinness World Records must still make the o cial decision after carrying out document checks and interviewing Branyas Morera’s family.

Branyas Morera has lived through the 1918 u, two world wars and Spain’s civil war. The Santa Maria del Tura nursing home in the town of Olot in north-eastern Spain, where Branyas Morera has lived for the past two decades, said it would hold a “small celebration” behind closed doors in the coming days

to mark “this very special event”.

“She is in good health and remains surprised and grateful for the interest that has been generated,” it added in a statement.

Branyas Morera was born in San Francisco on 4th March, 1907, shortly after her family moved to the United States

from Mexico. The entire family decided to return to their native Spain in 1915 as World War I was under way. Branyas Morera and her mother settled in Barcelona and she married a doctor, they had three children, including one who has already died, 11 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.

Butane gas price drop

The price of the butane cylinder has dropped by almost one euro, to 17.66 euros, starting last Tuesday, 17th January. According to the resolution published on Monday, January 16, in the O cial State Gazette (BOE). Speci cally, the maximum retail price of the butane cylinder will drop by 0.92 euros, to 17.66 euros, compared to 18.58 euros in

force since 15th November.

The maximum RRP of lique ed petroleum gases (LPG) in containers of 8 to 20 kilograms (the traditional butane cylinder) is reviewed every other month on the third Tuesday of the month. There are 64.5 million LPG containers of di erent capacities used annually. However, it is a fuel in decline; from 2010 to 2021, the

total consumption of bottled LPG has fallen by more than 25 percent.

The current price drop comes just as the temperatures have fallen and a colder snap, with high winds has swept across the region. Forecasters and predicting continued lower temperatures in coming weeks and February could see Spain hit by a polar vortex.

Winners announced for the Specsavers Ópticas short story competition

Two aspiring authors have been crowned winners of the Specsavers Ópticas short story competition.

Eight-year-old David Adsuar Vélez from Guardamar and 14-year-old Inés Peiró López from the Malaga region impressed the judges with their creative and imaginative stories and have been awarded a prize and gift for their respective schools.

Children were invited to submit their short stories for the competition between the 3rd of October and the 16th of December. Entries were reviewed by a panel of authors and poets who judged them based on the quality of writing, maintaining suspense, creativity and imagination, clarity of ideas, characterization and dialogue.

The judges were very impressed by the level of the entries, and commented, “The overall standard of the entries was very good. We were pleased to see short sentences and a natural rhythm, as well as combining realism and fantasy in an e ective way.

As judges we’d like to celebrate each of the stories, as the act of creation is a prize in itself! Being able to express yourself and start experimenting how to make art with language is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations to all of you – keep on writing!”

They were particularly impressed with the two winning entries. The winner of the Junior Category was David Adsuar Vélez, with his story “The Crystal Ball”. The judges loved its attention-grabbing

beginning, elements of action and a variety of characters.

The winner in the Senior category was the story by Inés Peiró López entitled “Future”. It was chosen as a very technically well-constructed story, with short phrasing, precise use of words and a balanced and striking mixture of realism and fantasy.

David Adsuar Vélez visited Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar to collect his prize and store director Lisa James threw in a cool pair of Suneez kids’ sunglasses too. He was delighted to have been chosen as the winner. His school CEIP Reyes Católicos will also be receiving a donation of 200€.

Seagate are pleased to support the amazing charity A Helping Hand - a food and clothes bank charity.

They support over 600 people, including children that are in poverty and in crisis and they urgently need food and clothes donations from you.

Through no fault of their own these people are struggling to survive and the Spanish welfare system is virtually non-exisitent. They have Spanish families who find themselves in poverty along with families who have fled Ukraine that desperately need your help. at a food bank in order to feed your family, then you will know these people really are desperate. No-one would put themselves through that indignity if they had a choice.

There is a constant need for help with simply the basic staples such as tuna, toilet paper, milk, tinned food, pasta, rice, soup mix, baked beans, olive oil.

They also need hygiene items such as washing detergent, shower gel, shampoo as well as baby items needed are nappies, hero baby milk 1 and 2 and baby wipes.

Each week they try to give each family on their list the following basic bag: Tuna, Toilet paper ×2, Carton of milk,

Tomato frito, Tinned tomatoes 1 Pasta 1 Rice, 1 Soup Mix, some Lentils or the Beans in glass jar and Baked beans.

Every family that comes will then get some meat whatever we may have usually a chicken leg & a bit of mince.

When we receive a packet of ham or a packet of cheese slices, the ones for burgers,we cut the packet in half. Cheese triangles, we also cut the packet in half. Yoghurts again split if we have them.

As well as feeding families, they are always looking for clothes, men’s jumpers in particular at the moment. Any clothing you no longer need, please donate it to this wonderful charity.

As begin 2023 the task becomes harder as more families want to join the list and resources are scarce. They are hoping to be able to provide for families throughout the next few months when times are hardest. The US drive to curb in ation with aggressive rate hikes is reverberating across world markets.

The war in Ukraine, which unfortunately may intensify this year, and China’s battle against Covid will also help to determine the severity of a global recession.

For the rst time since 2019 the main story wasn’t Covid, even if China is still gripped by the virus, but clearly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Oil and gas stocks– all impacted by Russia, all major in uences on in ation, and all largely immune to central bank action on ghting in ation.

The US: Investors ignore the tech giants at their peril

The normally rampant US markets racked up sizeable

losses last year, although the impact was mitigated for UK investors who bene ted from the strong dollar.

The collapse in value of the Nasdaq last year saw a signi cant downturn in the value of tech stocks. However, it may also be fair to say that investors ignore the tech giants at their peril, since there is plenty of scope for further growth. Many of them have dominant, and in some cases, unassailable positions in their market.

China: End of ‘Zero Covid’ policy could bring a major economic boost

The re-opening of China after the pandemic will be an important development to look out for in 2023.

Zero Covid is nally being abandoned in the face of widespread protests due to economic damage and

the overall direction remains constructive, where the worst of Zero Covid restrictions are behind us. The normalisation of Chinese activity will be incrementally positive for global demand, at a time when recession looms in 2023.

Diversi cation is key at present. Portfolios need a solid base, so they are diversi ed over asset classes, currencies and geographies.

If all this sounds daunting, then help is at hand as the Seagate team has a wealth of experience and have a number of options with international companies to help manage the risks and diversify your portfolio.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP

It has been a fairly solid week for UK data and the pound, with GBP/USD moving within touching distance of the December high at 1.2447, before slipping back towards 1.2300 amidst a broader market decline (see USD). Sterling also marked some worthy gains against the likes of the EUR, CAD and JPY during that time, con rming a much stronger performance for the pound when measured against a broader basket of currencies. This week’s key UK data releases have mostly helped to underpin the move, with in ation declining for the second month in a row, amidst headline in ation dipping to 10.6% (YoY). Core in ation slipped from 6.6 to 6.3% (YoY) through December. The latest UK unemployment report also highlighted ongoing robustness in the labour market, with the overall ILO unemployment rate remaining at a healthy 3.7%, news which will give the government some relief, given such a weak outlook for all things UK recently.

Although perhaps unexpected, given that the BoE have now raised their policy rate to 3.5%, UK house prices reported their rst monthly fall in more than a year, dipping by 0.3% through November. Whilst that may represent the rst such drop since late 2021, it helped to drag the overall annual growth rate down from 12.4 to 10.3%. Interestingly enough, London reported the weakest regionwide annual pace of house growth, at 6.3%, which does not bode well for the rest of the UK, which tends to lag London.

The latest Retail Sales for the UK have just been released this morning (Friday), and having declined by 0.4% in November, markets had expected a rebound through December, however, the latest gures highlighted an unexpected further decline of 1% (MoM/Dec), with a 5.8% drop over the past year, clearly re ecting the impact of those big increases to the cost of living for UK consumers. Looking ahead, GBP/USD will need to break over 1.2450 to signal likely further upside gains, a move

which may be dictated by broader dollar sentiment in the short-run, given the lack of keynote UK data releases scheduled for release next week.

EURO

It has been another solid week for Euro area data. German In ation softened (again) over the past month, slipping by 1.2% throughout December, a trend which is re ective throughout the region. The latest ZEW survey also highlighted that German investor sentiment has now turned positive for the rst time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The ZEW’s indicator of investors’ expectations over the coming six months, rose for the fourth month in a row from -23.3 to 16.9. Markets had been expecting a -15 print. That is some improvement.

With the trend of ever-improving data (against expectations) continuing throughout the region, there have been increasing concerns amongst investors that the ECB might be inclined to soften their language, and imply a shallower pace of hikes moving forward. However, that has certainly not been the case, with ECB President Christine Lagarde, speaking in snowy Davos, suggesting that the ECB will ‘stay the course’ with rate hikes. Whilst she did highlight that economic news has become more positive, and that Europe may now only see a small contraction, the fact that she remains resolute on hikes will give markets con dence, which could help to support the single currency moving forward. Lagarde has been backed by a splattering of ECB o cials, implying that the ECB will deliver further 50bps rate hikes over the coming months.

On that note, EUR/USD has remained airborne, without being able to break above 1.0875, which has marked the top for the pair on several occasions, although any dips have been met by worthy buyers. GBP/EUR has not fared as well, rallying back above 1.1450, backed by a resurgent pound (see GBP).

The animals of the municipal shelter received the blessing of Saint Anton

for the first time

There was a great attendance of pets to the blessings in the church of the Immaculate Conception and in the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

For the rst time in Torrevieja, on the occasion of the Day of San Antón, patron saint and protector of animals, the Municipal Shelter was visited by the parish priest of San Pedro and San Pablo, very close to the facility,

Pedro Payá, who proceeded to impart the blessing to all the animals housed there.

The event was attended by the councillor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, and a large representation of the volunteers who collaborate with the shelter.

Also, with a large attendance, took place the blessing of pets, both in the Church of Immaculate Conception and

in the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The numerous pets that came to the doors of these churches were blessed by the vicar, Mikel Uribe, under the image of the Saint in the Immaculate Conception and, at the same time, the parish priest of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Aurelio Ferrándiz, did the same in the hallway of the parish of the La Punta neighbourhood.

A valid habitation licence will be one of the rst documents required to market your property by your estate agent, solicitor, or prospective purchaser. Here are some tips to save money

1. When coming to habitation licences, always ask for a breakdown of costs:

The cost of a Habitation Licence entirely depends on each town hall.

Orihuela town hall asks for 102 to 111 € as opposed to 17,50 € Registration Fee at Torrevieja, for example. Therefore ask for a breakdown of the tax you are paying and the technical fees.

2. Only architects are entitled to sign o the necessary certi cate to process the licence, so if you are considering commissioning the licence to your lawyer or agent, investigate if there are any commissions on top of what is strictly

the architect’s fee and registration tax, that again takes us to the rst point: always ask for a breakdown of the quotation you are obtaining.

3. Here are some of the most common registration taxes

Orihuela: 102-111 € Torrevieja: 17.50 € Rojales: 50 € San Fulgencio: 50 € San Miguel de Salinas: 100 €

Currently, the process for obtaining a Habitation Licence is straightforward. Once con rmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the property, requiring only your NIE, latest SUMA bill and TitleDeeds. After the Habitation Licence is processed at the Town Hall and delivered within 10 working days (guaranteed). We undertake all the process, tax payment included, so we just need to arrange our survey.

The cost of a habitation varies depending on each Town Hall, so feel free to contact us to obtain a quotation or any free advice over the phone.

My Aunt (my mother’s sister), is obsessed with pointing out to me that my brother is the favourite in our family. We are a family of three girls, and one boy; our brother is the second eldest. My Aunt seems set on telling me, that in her opinion, that my brother is clearly the favourite with my parents. We are all adults now. I have spoken to my two sisters and they say that our Aunt has never mentioned anything to them. I can’t understand why my mother’s sister would single me out to make these comments. She will do it every time we meet at a family event, and has started messaging me with the same. It’s starting to get at me now, as she finds a way of bringing it up to make me feel bad.

Favouritism isn’t something I can understand, because my sisters and I have never felt left out, or noticed any favouritism made towards our brother, so I can’t understand why my Aunt is doing this.

The next time she does it, you can say that neither you nor your sisters feel that way. Then,

ask her if she thinks it a good idea that you bring your mum over to join the conversation. This should hopefully be enough to have your Aunt back off. If she continues, tell her either face to face, or in

a message that her comments are unkind and unhelpful and you would appreciate she refrain from doing so in future. If you think it would help to bring your parents into matters, then do so.

Your choices are to pay for more storage or remove something. Each Google account has an

allowance of 15 G Bytes of storage across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.

If you do not want to pay for extra storage you will need to remove some les from Google Drive or Google Photos as Gmail normally take up a relatively small amount of storage.

To nd out how much storage is being used in Google Drive and Google Photos open the Google One App associated with your Google Account. In Google One select Storage. You will then see storage details between your Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. You now need to decide what you are going to remove.

To avoid losing les or photos/ videos you will need to copy whatever you want to another location and delete them from Google Drive or Photos. The deleted content will be moved to either Google Drive or Photos Bin. You then need to empty the bin/s as this still counts toward you total storage.

Any photos or videos you backed up before June 1, 2021 will not count toward your Google Account storage.

The importance of scrapping your vehicle legally

Having worked in the scrap business on the Costa Blanca for over a decade, the team at Bradley Breakers could tell us all a horror story or two about people who thought they had scrapped their old car only to nd that the car was still registered, and even in some instanes driving around accumulating nes, many months later. Therefore, please ensure you do your research and check that whoever is taking your car is legal , check their facebook page and website for reviews on their company.

There are car owners on the Costa Blanca who have faced large nes after the vehicle they thought they’d dealt with was still driving around. Unfortunately, as long as your name remains on the document of ownership you are legally responsible for that vehicle.

Here in Spain the system of scrapping a vehicle is much di erent from anything you are likely to be used to Ireland or the UK. If you also have the added complication of a language barrier it is even more imperative that, when considering disposing of a vehicle, you use a company in which you have complete trust.

One such company is Bradley Breakers. They are experts in the eld and they can make the whole process simple and uncomplicated. Simply make the call, they will make you a cash o er for your vehicle and if accepted they will collect the vehicle on a tow truck from your home ensuring the minimum of disruption and fuss for you.

They will then leave you with the necessary legal documentation, indicating that they have taken ownership of your old vehicle and then, once the vehicle has been o cially ‘scrapped’, you will be issued with the o cial DGT Certi cate (Baja).

Bradley Breakers said, “We can’t overemphasise the importance of doing the ‘baja’ of a vehicle properly in Spain. It saves so much hassle and heartache further along the line doing it in the correct way with a trustworthy company.”

Bradley Breakers, which employs over 40 people, now have an impressive new scrapyard consisting of a 20,000 square metre site on which they house a 3,000 sqm warehouse in which they store thousands of used parts which they have removed from cars. All parts are recorded on a

computer stock system and stacked on racking within the warehouse.

You can even buy parts online. So, if you are looking for a component for your car, before you buy new, you could save time and money by going directly to Bradley Breakers.

Car owners in Spain should be aware of a new environmental badge that came into e ect on January 1, 2023.

The badge enables vehicles to be categorised based on their energy e ciency, with their impact on the environment taken into account.

The motive to classify vehicles is to recognise those that are more environmentally friendly. The sede. dgt.gob.es website states that they should “be an e ective instrument at the service of municipal policies, both restrictive of tra c in episodes of high pollution, and of promoting new technologies through scal bene ts or related to mobility and the environment.”

In total there are four environmental badges that have been created based on the environmental impact of the vehicle. They will categorise and grade the 50% most e cient vehicles. Vehicles that are not entitled to any

type of badge will come into the 50 percent ‘most polluting category’, meaning they do not meet the requirements to be labeled as a ‘clean vehicle’.

Contact Bradley Breakers Central in English on (0034) 607 848 332 or drop an e-mail to bradleybreakerscatral1@outlook. com. Facebook Bradley Karl Thompson. The new location is Poligono 18, C/Novelda 2B, Crevillente 03330.

Check out just some of their 5 star rating reviews: All the sta I dealt with were very friendly and great communicators. I scrapped my car with them and they gave me a great price. Fast and e cient paperwork. Totally recommend this car breakers. Fast, e cient and friendly service. Arrived to collect the car at the time arranged with all paperwork ready and the Baja was issued the next day. I can not fault their service and would recommend them every time. Very fast service. called them, they were round in 15 minutes, agreed selling price of our car. cash and

paperwork done in 10 minutes. no fa ng about just straight simple business.

First time we’ve had to use this type of service...Can thoroughly recommend Bradley’s...Very quick collection of vehicle plus all the necessary paperwork was completed by them.

Two trolley’s of food for the Cruz Roja

The Cruz Roja Torrevieja seemed very pleased with yet another delivery of donated food items.

David and Lorrraine Whitney, local fundraisers, were happy to deliver two trolley loads of food items for the charity, one courtesy of the generosity of Overseas Supermarket customers and another supply of food bought with money raised at the recent charity event “Mingle Bells” at the Marina Bar, Calle de las Rosas. This event organised by David and Lorraine once again highlighted the generosity of people in these di cult times.

A big thank you must go to all of those people who kindly donated food items into the trolley in Overseas Supermarket Torrevieja and to the manager James Lound for his charitable support.

Thanks too to Rita and Dave Monaghan and their loyal team at the Marina Bar who again support and donate to worthwhile charities like the Cruz Roja.

Rojales Pantomime GroupA NIGHT AT THE OSCARS

After their recent resounding successful pantomime, Treasure Island, performed in December, members of the cast and crew were invited to nominate and vote for their favourite ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’. A sparkling after show party was held in El Raso where everyone was treated to an excellent meal, followed by the Oscars presentations, all organised by our excellent Social Secretary, Dee.

John Fagg, the Group’s President, was pleased to present an Oscar to the ‘best actor’, Dave Hart, our magni cent Dame and one to the ‘best supporting actor’, Len Beedham, a very funny Polly Parrot. Two special Oscars were awarded –The Director’s Award which went to Roger Scott who did an excellent job providing all the music, lighting and technical know how, together with the President’s Award which went to

Well done to all the winners but a special well done to everyone, cast, backstage crew and our very patient Director, Dee, for all their hard work in putting on such a successful pantomime whilst raising lots of money which will be donated to various local charities, including The Stroke Association, details of the rewarding charities will be featured in the local press.

Members enjoyed performing the pantomime so much that they are going to do it all over again later this year..... oh yes they are, and a new production is being discussed.

Buying a vehicle?

If you’re buying a vehicle or maybe even just want to check that everything is okay with a vehicle you own, the best way to do this is by obtaining a vehicle report, whether it be from the DGT or a private company or agency.

Types of Report

Whilst there are several types of report available inluding a very basic, free version, you will normally require an “Informe Completo” or “Detailed Report”, as this will cover all the essential information you will need.

Information

Not only will the vehicle report tell you whether the current ITV is up to date, it will provide you the full ITV history of the vehicle in Spain with recorded mileage, whether the vehicle is insured and who with, the number of previous owners, all the vehicle details along with technical data and if there are any issues such as an embargo etc.

Importance

It’s crucial to carry out this check

before you purchase a vehicle so that you know that the vehicle is going to come without issues and that you will be able to register it in your name.

How to obtain

The cheapest and easiest way to

obtain a vehicle report is direct from the DGT website using your electronic signature or Cl@ve PIN or by using the miDGT app. However you can also book a face to face appointment at your local Tra co o ce. If you don’t have a digital signature then

it’s sometimes easier to use a private agency such as CARFAX to carry out your search.

Detailed Search

If you’d like us to carry out a detailed vehicle report on your behalf with a full explanation of the relevant information attached you can do so using the following link:

Important progress in the recovery of the municipal natural site “Molino Del Agua”

Work continues on the recovery of the coastal juniper and juniper grove habitats, through the planting of 200 new dune junipers (Juniperus turbinata).

Last week a group of students from Syracuse University (New York, USA) have collaborated in the tasks of control of Invasive Alien Species, through a volunteer activity that aims to advance the control and eradication of cat’s claw or Carpobrotus acinaciformis.

The Councillor for the Environment, Antonio Vidal, reported that in recent weeks, the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), with the support of the City of Torrevieja, continues with the work of recovery of coastal juniper and juniper habitats, through the implementation of 200 new dune junipers (Juniperus turbinata) in the Municipal Natural Park “Molino del Agua” of

Juan Antonio Pujol, municipal biologist, announced that these junipers will soon be accompanied by some thirty coastal junipers (Juniperus macrocarpa) ceded for the recovery of this species thanks to the collaboration of the Valencia City Council’s Devesa-Albufera Service.

The tasks are part of the recovery work of the coastal juniper and juniper groves, an open forest adapted to the harsh conditions of the dunes and which is considered a habitat of community interest by the European Union.

The aim of the action is to reinforce the recovery of these dune forests, a formation that has practically disappeared but of which there are references in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. In fact, both juniper and juniper were extinct in the south

of the province of Alicante, with some specimens of juniper remaining in the north of the province (around Benidorm, Jávea, Cabo de la Nao) and in the El Saler meadow (Valencia), while the few specimens of juniper in the dunes were relegated to the Regional Park of the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia).

Specimens of mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) have also been introduced, a large shrub that gives its name to “La Mata” and other species adapted to the global warming scenario, such as the cornical (Periploca angustifolia).

The plantations have been provided with localised irrigation, which will be removed once the trees are established. Since the start of the restoration work, more than a hundred coastal junipers and more than 600 dune junipers have been planted.

Don’t bring cake to work!

If you work in an o ce, you know the tradition, it’s someone’s birthday and the unwritten rule is that they or a generous boss supplies cake or cakes for all. But food adviser says workers should not bring in sweet treats - to avoid tempting colleagues.

In fact, taking cake into the o ce as a treat for colleagues has been branded as harmful as second-hand smoking.

Professor Susan Jebb made the comment during an interview with the Times newspaper, creating headlines across the globe and sparking considerable discussion and debate.

She said: “If nobody brought cakes into the o ce, I would not eat cakes.” She added that in her personal opinion, workers should stop testing the willpower of colleagues.

The comments have divided health experts, with many pointing out that people have to take responsibility for their own health and that if someone’s eating cake next to you, you don’t have to eat it. It’s your choice.

Ms Jebb, professor of diet and population at the University of Oxford, said eating cake was a choice but colleagues could help each other by providing “a supportive environment”. She argued that being around cake in the o ce was like passive smoking, which though not

identical also in icted harm on others.

Lou Walker, who authored a report on o ce cake culture, believes that it is becoming an everyday occurrence and was“no longer special”. Her belief is that although the tradition comes from a place of generosity and kindness and wanting to share, now is it’s happening every day and that means that it’s no longer special or a occasional treat. In many workplaces cake, biscuits and sweets are now brought by colleagues returning from holiday or to celebrate last days, birthdays, Fridays and even Mondays. This can start a scramble as hungry and sweet-toothed colleagues try to get their hands on the treats. And who wants to be known as the person who brings

in healthy nuts or fruit rather than chocolates as they regale colleagues about their weekend in Madrid.

The debate even made it to Number 10, with the UK prime minister’s o cial spokesman saying Rishi Sunak believed “personal choice should be baked into our approach”. He added: “We want to encourage healthy lifestyles and are taking action to tackle obesity, which has cost the NHS £6bn annually.

“However, the way to deal with this issue is not to stop people from occasionally bringing in treats for their coworkers.”

Mr Sunak’s spokesman added that the prime minister was “very partial to a piece of cake” and most enjoyed carrot and red velvet cake.

Most Popular Myths about the ITV Inspection

Although there are some who say otherwise, the ITV is a very important procedure for our vehicle to comply with the technical and environmental requirements in order to continue driving safely. It is a procedure that all drivers must go through with our vehicles from time to time: normally, the rst ITV test on a new vehicle is required 4 years after its registration; thereafter, every two years, and it becomes an annual requirement when it has reached the decade of life.

In these mandatory inspections, di erent elements are checked to guarantee the integrity of the vehicle. If you do not pass the exam, you will receive a “desfavorable” or “negativa” result, which will mean having to pass the ITV again with certain conditions. What’s more: one of the most serious problems facing the Spanish car eet, apart from its high average age, is the absenteeism of thousands of drivers from the ITV. Perhaps due to ignorance, laziness, for economic reasons or simply because they don’t want to.

There are also a number of drivers who spread “rumours” about the ITV

inspections, which are nothing more or less than myths, which the AECA-ITV, the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles, are happy to explain.

“The ITV does not guarantee the safety conditions of the vehicles”: obviously, it is quite the opposite, since the inspections precisely control that the technical, mechanical and environmental requirements are met to continue circulating.

“Inspectors do not have adequate training”: AECA-ITV highlights the requirements that all ITV employees must meet, starting with the technical director with the title of “Technical Engineer” that is required at all stations. In addition, inspectors must have the title of “Higher Automotive Technician” or equivalent.

“Inspectors have to comply with a percentage of rejections”: another false myth that is disproved regarding ITV inspectors, who must always be subject to the criteria of “objectivity and impartiality”; In addition, AECTA-ITV recalls that the

centres must also undergo inspections by the public administrations.

“The ITV does not help to protect the environment”: the new emission tests, as well as the control of noise levels, refute this false myth.

“Only the owner of the vehicle can pass the ITV”: a friend or relative, as long as they have a driving licence, can pass the inspection of your car without problem, bringing (as always) the required documentation: that is, the vehicle’s circulation permit and the technical data sheet.

“If you fail the ITV, you can continue driving until the second inspection”: a resounding NO. If you have received a “desfavorable” result, you can only drive to the workshop for the corresponding repairs and to return to the ITV centre, all within a maximum period of 2 months.

If you have received a “negative” result, then it will be a tow truck that will have to take the vehicle to the workshop, with the same term mentioned above and without the possibility of being able to drive the vehicle due to the detected failures.

“If I have the car parked without moving it, I don’t need to pass the ITV”: having the car stopped does not exempt you from the responsibility of having to pass the ITV (or having insurance). The only way to “free yourself” in this sense is to have the vehicle deregistered and be withdrawn from public roads.

“It is not necessary to be insured when passing the ITV”: another resounding NO. ITV and insurance must always go hand in hand. In fact, if at the station where you are going to carry out the inspection they verify that you do not have the insurance in order, or you will not be able to pass the ITV.

Buying a Used Car in Spain

Buying a used car in Spain can be a risky interaction, partly because you will never truly know the history of the vehicle, what is has been through, who has driven it, or how technically sound it is, and partly because you might rst have to nd a trusted dealer. Of course, you don’t need a dealer, you can buy a car privately, but there are a number of procedures you will have to follow.

The sad reality is that new cars depreciate the moment we but them, and the quality standard of the car also reduces with every single trip. The rst top tip for buying a used car is to have realistic expectations.

While cheaper cars can be cheaper to buy, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are cheap to run. So, it’s key that before you investigate buying a car or making any decisions that you set out your budget for the car and any additional costs. Find out how much does servicing cost, how expensive are spare parts, how freely available are those parts? Do a thorough check assuming things might go wrong, not because you should be pessimistic, but rather because faults do happen so if you plan for them within your budget then they won´t be so much of a surprise.

By the way, some industry experts estimate that on average a person would spend 1,800 euro per year on their car and keeping it roadworthy, increasing over time, so keep this in mind, perhaps spreading a budget over that year.

The gure includes fuel, as well as insurance and tax, but also servicing and maintenance.

Love at First Sight? Don´t trust your rst impression.

Make sure you look at the car with a critical eye. Having a reliable and sturdy car is not about the colour, so don´t fall into the trap of choosing a vehicle by that means, but rather take a long and detailed look at it.

You can research the model online, checking to see what the most common problems and faults are, and then check your new potential purchase for signs of those problems.

Look out for obvious modi cations. Some vehicle modi cations can render the ITV as invalid, whereas other can simply be masking a deeper problem. Modi cations can also increase the cost of insurance.

Check the car in daylight too, so you can see clearly if there are any problems.

History? What History?

All cars have two histories. One, we will never know about, as we have not been with it for the duration of its life, and neither has the current owner. Even the most careful of drivers cannot avoid leaving their car in the street or a car park, and so nobody really knows what has happened during that time.

However, there is one history we can check, that is the administrative register. You can do this via the DGT website, dgt.es, but it is important that you check the car and see if there are any debts, nes or other issues recorded, as if you buy it, they become your problem.

There are two types of vehicle history checks available, a basic report, and one with more detail. Clearly, the detailed report is the better option, and is the one you should always opt for.

Check the Documents

Does the car come with the original documents such as the logbook and ITV card? If not, you may need to ask the seller to obtain these before you buy the car. Don´t but a car without the original documents as you cannot be sure it is even for sale.

Testing… Testing…

It is important to test drive any car you are thinking of buying, new or second hand, but it is arguably more important for the latter. Whilst a car might look pristine on the outside, we don´t usually buy cars for their aesthetics but rather as a mobility tool, so how it will feel getting us from a to b is crucial.

Check everything during the test drive. See if the car pulls to either side, if it stops safely, accelerates well, and if it turns without struggling. Check all the features of the car too, such as the electrics, including the lights, and the safety features such as seat belts. Check the windscreen wipers, washers, everything you might use on a regular, or occasional basis.

You don´t have to settle for one test drive of course, go back and do it again if you feel it appropriate, maybe even at night, whatever makes you feel more con dent in the vehicle you are buying.

Buying a car can be a stressful time, it is a big investment, and it will not be without problems (sorry), but if you check these things before buying a car, and more importantly make sure you are 100% happy before handing over any money, then hopefully you will have a long and happy life still with your new, albeit second-hand, motor.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT

Another week in football is in the rearview mirror, most likely like XYZ’s title hopes, ABC’s coaching career and EFG’s dream of getting a transfer into the Premier League - insert your own teams, managers and players for maximum personal giggles.

We all know what West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen has been getting up to to regain his goalscoring skills. Maybe Moysey should make that part of a unique kind of nishing training next week - for the rest of them that still can’t score in a you-know-what.

Bowen’s brace was enough to condemn the Ev to their weekly dose of humiliation. Everton were so bad in the rst half, the interweb was fast tracking down examples of managers getting the chop at half-time. Carlo Ancelotti was one, apparently - it must be an Everton thing (even though it happened when he was at Juventus).

When a team is so poor after 45 minutes, you often watch closely to see if there’s any changes on the pitch - not the bench - and it was no great surprise to see Frank Lampard reappear given nobody who runs Everton seems to know who makes the nal decision to

call it a day. Moshiri? “Not my decision”. Kenwright? “Not telling you, we just need to start winning” - ah, yes. That easily found magic formula. It’s no wonder the To ees are screwed.

The pressure has eased momentarily on the Moysiah who said post-match that he hopes Everton do stick with Frank. I’m not surprised, that’s one less relegation spot that West Ham could ll if they do keep him on. That said, I don’t think there’s many coaches out there that could turn this ship around.

Is it Lampard’s fault? Was it Rafa’s? Or Big Sham’s? Or Carlo’s? Or Marco Silva’s? Or Big Ron’s? They’ve been na since Moyes was there with no money to spend. They started turning very na when they suddenly had a lot more money than sense.

Mind you, one solution could be to bring in Stevie G - either alongside Frank or to replace him. After all, we all spent the early 2000s convinced there has to be a way they could work together, one covers when one goes and all that rubbish. And then we all realised that the answer was actually Paul Scholes. Hang on, there’s an idea.

Saturday kicked o with Liverpool and Chelsea drawing 0-0 at An eld. Of course Chelsea didn’t win - teams in blue don’t win in Merseyside.

Sunday kicked o with Man City

rewiring the Erling Haaland Deluxe and watching him get all three in a 3-0 win over Wolves. It’s a good thing they kept the instruction manual - most guys just throw them out once they’ve taken the new toy out of the box.

That put a little bit of pressure on Arsenal, as did Marcus Rashford putting United ahead at the Emirates. This was going to be the game where Arteta’s frenetic arm-waving on the touchline would nally see him dislocate a shoulder, surely? And Arsenal realise that they aren’t going to just stroll to the Premier League title? Apparently not. Wise sages said that Gabby Jesus coming back from Qatar crocked would nish the Gunners o because, “you can’t rely on Nketiah to score the goals, bruv”. Yeah, about that. Eddie from the Hale End Academy scored twice either side of Bukayo Saka scoring yet another goal - he’s from the Academy as well. They’re going to win it, aren’t they? I wonder what Mykailo Mudryk was making of it all - or maybe he was too busy counting his agent’s commission for getting Chelsea to pay all that cash.

It’s been a long, long time since Arsenal vs United meant anythingbut based on that, you have to believe that it might soon be at least the third or fourth biggest game in the Premier

League calendar in the next year or so.

A drone stopped play at Southampton - to be fair, it was their best spell in the game. Unfortunately, the game resumed and VAR showed they are still as useful as a drone at a football match in ruling out a perfectly good James Ward-Prowse goal. Naturally, the laws of football clearly state that when such a thing happens, the opposition have to nick a winner and Aston Villa duly complied.

Leicester and Brighton played out a very entertaining 2-2 draw where Brighton’s players increased the chances of Chelsea putting in various €80m+ bids in the next week. Mitoma, Caicedo, Roberto Sanchez and Evan Ferguson can all expect to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the not too distant.

Bournemouth’s new winger is straight Outtara Lorient - and he set up their goal against Nottingham Forest in the 1-1 draw. Forest have snapped up Chris Wood from Newcastle on loan, in case you missed it.

Leeds and Brentford ran around very quickly for 90 minutes without really looking like there was much of a point to it all. It nished 0-0 which was no help to anyone really, especially a Fantasy Football manager with both Toney and Bamford in his team.
