Walk for Life to help local residents battle cancer

Sunday saw Maria and the Pink Ladies hold the annual “Walk for Life” at the promenade in front of Surfers Bar Playa Flamenca. This is

the biggest event the charity organises each year to raise funds for the AACC to support its Early Detection Program, which enables local residents

to receive cancer checks.

This year was the 14th annual walk and around 200 people put their best foot forward to complete the 5k circuit. The walkers were supported by friends, family and local residents, who came along to enjoy the fun atmosphere.

There was a sea of pink as far as the eye could see, as everyone dressed in the colour globally recognised as representing the battle against cancer. Many donned fancy dress and even pets were decked out in pink outfits.

Last year the event raised more than €8,000 from registration fees, sponsorship and ad hoc donations and Maria and the Pink Ladies volunteers are hopeful of at least equalling that amount this year. Every penny – or should that be cent – that’s donated goes directly to the AACC. The charity’s Early Protection Program allows local men and women to book cancer checks at a private hospital at a subsidised rate. These checks include: prostate, breast, ovarian, bowel and skin cancer.

Speaking after the event Maria said: “I would like to thank the Town Hall and Local Police for their support once again. A big thank you

also goes to Surfers Bar for donating the water for all the walkers and Spain Property Shop for sponsoring the gift of a shopping bag for everyone who took part. A special thank you to Simon Morton from Sunshine FM for supporting the day and the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums for piping the walkers out and back again, and of course all the Pink Ladies volunteers for their efforts on the day once again.

Our biggest thanks, of course goes to all of those who took part in the event and gave their time to complete the Walk for Life and raise those much-needed funds.”

Statistics According to The World Health Organisation the latest figures show there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7

million deaths. The estimated number of people who were alive within 5 years following a cancer diagnosis was 53.5 million. About 1 in 5 people develop cancer in their lifetime, approximately 1 in 9 men and 1 in 12 women die from the disease.

Lung cancer was the most commonly occurring cancer worldwide with 2.5 million new cases accounting for 12.4% of the total new cases. Female breast cancer ranked second (2.3 million cases, 11.6%), followed by colorectal cancer (1.9 million cases, 9.6%), prostate cancer (1.5 million cases, 7.3%), and stomach cancer (970 000 cases, 4.9%).

Councillor for the Coast presents budget to residents

The Councillor for the Coast of the municipality of Orihuela, Manuel Mestre, has held an information meeting for the residents of Orihuela Costa to explain the relevance of the 2024 budgets to their neighbourhoods.

The meeting addressed the challenges and solutions contemplated in the new budget, as well as the specific projects that will be developed in the coastal area.

Since 2018, Orihuela City Council has operated under budget extensions, which has generated a series of problems, such as services being operated without a contract, absence of investments and an inefficient internal structure. The new budgets address these issues through the implementation of contracted services, an ambitious investment plan and a more efficient internal structure.

The Councillor detailed the 2024 budgets that impact Orihuela Costa, explaining the planned investments that reach close to 20 million euros.

The larger projects include the following:

- Construction of a new drinking water tank in Orihuela Costa with an investment of 2,800,000

- The civic centre and auditorium of Orihuela Costa, with a budget of 1,149,440.85 euros.

- The AP-7 Lomas de Cabo Roig walkway/pedestrian bridge, with an investment of 1,370,000 euros.

- The Bellavista urbanization project in Cabo Roig with an amount of €600,000

There will also be considerable investments in beaches that total almost 2,000,000 euros. These include:

- Urban furniture and playgrounds.

- Beach access walkways.

- Lifts to access the beaches.

- Cleaning of public areas.

During the meeting, the councillor also detailed the summary of expenses for 2024, including items for personnel, goods and services, financial and other concepts, as well as the income budget. Information has also been provided on the contracts managed by the Costa Department, such as road maintenance, the management entrustment to ILDO, public lighting, the channel cleaning agreement with the CHS, and the fee for beach bars and lifeguards.

Continuing with the

improvements detailed in the budget, the road safety of the Villamartín and San Miguel de Salinas main roads was highlighted. The replacement of trees and palm trees in Orihuela Costa is also contemplated, as well as security on the beaches and the management of cleaning points and pruning.

Restore confidence

Finally, the Councillor has stressed that the approval of these budgets, after such a long period of extension, will help restore residents’ confidence in municipal institutions and in the ability of local government to fulfil its basic responsibilities.

“This is essential to strengthen the link between our neighbours of Orihuela Costa and the Costa Department, guarantee adequate financial management and compliance with municipal obligations,” Mestre concluded.

Ending the meeting, the Councillor, said: “We intend to improve people’s lives, we want to create excitement and a feeling of belonging in the municipality.”

Once the meeting was over, it was followed by requests and questions, where residents had the opportunity to express their concerns and receive direct answers from the Councillor.

Member of violent gang of robbers arrested in Orihuela Costa

Officers on the night shift for Orihuela Costa Local Police have arrested one of the members of an organised gang of robbers who carried out robberies with violence in the area and neighbouring municipalities.

A call from a member of the public alerted officers to a robbery in progress after several hooded men tried to gain access by breaking down the door of a well-known arcade located on Maestro Torralba Street. Two police cars arrived at the scene and caught the gang red-handed as they tried to access the premises.

The robbers panicked and fled the get away vehicle that was waiting for them outside.

During the chase, the officers tried to block the vehicles escape route in both directions, but one of the robbers got out of the vehicle and emptied a fire extinguisher on the police vehicle, causing a cloud of dust that prevented the thieves’ movements from being seen. Luckily the other police vehicle was able to slow down the escape and prevent one of the criminals from getting into the vehicle. Finally, after violently resisting he was arrested. The robbers’ vehicle fled the scene, being pursued by one of the police cars, but the thieves high-performance car made it impossible to stop.

Spain pledges €1bn in military aid to Ukraine amid escalating conflict

In a significant move to support Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia, Spain has pledged €1 billion in military aid for 2024. The announcement came after a high-level meeting in Madrid between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where the two leaders signed a comprehensive security deal.

The agreement, which marks a substantial increase in Spain’s military support to Ukraine, was highlighted during a joint press conference. “This commitment will enable Ukraine to enhance its capabilities, especially its crucial air defence systems needed to protect civilians, cities, and infrastructure from indiscriminate attacks, as seen recently in Kharkiv,” Sánchez stated. His remarks referred to a recent Russian strike on Kharkiv, which resulted in at least 16 fatalities.

Zelensky’s visit to Spain comes amid Ukraine’s strenuous defence against a Russian ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, marking Moscow’s most significant territorial push in 18 months. As the

conflict extends into its third year, Ukraine has been persistently appealing for more advanced weaponry to counter the superior Russian forces, with a particular emphasis on air defence systems.

Spanish media reports suggest that the newly signed deal will likely include advanced Patriot missiles and Leopard tanks, bolstering Ukraine’s military arsenal. This agreement follows Zelensky’s previous bilateral security accords with France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Sánchez elaborated on the wideranging scope of the security agreement. “This deal is founded on a comprehensive security perspective, covering military, humanitarian, and financial support. It also includes collaboration between Spanish and Ukrainian defence industries, assistance with reconstruction, and demining operations,” he explained.

Previously, Spain had provided relatively modest military aid to Ukraine.

The Kiel Institute, which monitors arms donations to Ukraine, notes that Spain had committed

€330 million in military aid up to this point, positioning it as a minor contributor compared to other European nations. For context, Germany, France, and Italy have pledged €18.61 billion, €5.65 billion, and €1.0 billion respectively, while the United Kingdom has contributed €9.22 billion. In recent months, Spain has stepped up its support, sending an unspecified number of Patriot air defence missile systems and ten Leopard tanks to Ukraine. This significant new commitment further underscores Spain’s evolving role in aiding Ukraine’s defence efforts.

During Zelensky’s visit, he was also welcomed by King Felipe VI at Madrid’s Barajas airport. This trip had been postponed earlier in the month due to an intensified Russian offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region, which had severely impacted Ukrainian forces.

The enhanced military aid from Spain comes at a critical juncture, as Ukraine continues to resist Russian advances and seeks greater international support to sustain its defence and protect its sovereignty.

Four arrested for forcing a woman into prostitution in Torrevieja

The Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal group accused of trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation. The victim, tricked into coming to Spain, was forced to practice prostitution in several roundabouts in Torrevieja to pay an alleged debt owed to the gang for travel, accommodation and maintenance expenses. Three of the four detainees have been imprisoned for these events.

The investigation began in March 2023, when a patrol from the Torrevieja Civil Guard Traffic Detachment observed a woman on a roundabout in the city. The woman reported that she had been tricked into coming to Spain and that, once in Torrevieja, she had been forced into prostitution.

Given the seriousness of these events, the WomenMinor Team (EMUME) of the Organic Unit of the Alicante Judicial Police took over the investigation, starting operation Itari. In her first statement, the victim explained that she had met a man of Romanian nationality through a well-known social network. This man offered her to come to Spain to work as a cook. However, after a week in the country, she forced her to prostitute herself on roundabouts in Torrevieja to pay off an alleged debt of 3,000 euros, which included

travel, accommodation and maintenance expenses.

As the investigations progressed, the agents identified the members of the human trafficking network: a couple, a man and a woman, two more men, all of Romanian nationality between the ages of 29 and 48 with a history of similar events in their country of origin.

The exploitation phase of the operation was carried out in September 2023. The woman was detained at Malaga Airport, while two men were detained in Romania and extradited to national territory in April 2024. On May 2, the The fourth member was arrested in a house in OrihuelaCosta. Of the four detainees, three were remanded in provisional detention, while the fourth was released with precautionary measures. All

of them are charged with the crimes of trafficking in human beings for the purposes of sexual exploitation and another for belonging to a criminal group.

The Court of 1st Instance and Instruction No. 2 of Torrevieja has been designated to handle the judicial case. The investigation remains open, so it is not ruled out that the number of victims of this gang will increase.

During the investigations, the agents have had the support of the Human Trafficking Section of the Judicial Police Technical Unit of the Civil Guard, the Interior Attaché Office at the Spanish Embassy in Romania and the Central Anti-Crime Unit. Organized by the Romanian Police (DCCO), as well as with the non-profit organization Fiet.

GBP

The most significant news in the UK last week was Rishi Sunak’s unexpected move to call a snap election on 4th July. Speculation that the election would happen in the autumn meant the announcement caught many by surprise, sparking a wave of curiosity about the underlying reasons.

The first potential answer could be related to the inflation data released the day before. Sunak pledged to halve inflation in the first year he came to power, a target he narrowly reached at the end of 2023.

Although last week’s data came in higher than expected at 2.3%, CPI inflation is now as close to the target of 2% as it has been since July 2021. The Bank of England’s forecast that it would dip close to 2% before rising again, meaning that this could be the lowest it will get this year. The UK has also officially come out of the shallow recession the economy experienced at the end of last year.

With the economy’s growth now expected to slow, the timing of the election is crucial. With positive economic news close to election day, it allows the Conservatives to leverage their economic accomplishments campaign. It is particularly poignant as Labour’s policies have traditionally focused more on social equality than economic growth.

It also looks increasingly unlikely that the government will be able to offer any pre-election tax cuts. The International Monetary Fund has warned the UK government that it could be on course to miss its debt target and tax rises could be needed instead, which the Conservative party would be keen to avoid being held responsible for before the election is held.

Another critical contributor could be migration.

Data has now confirmed that migration to the UK has peaked, with visa applications falling by a quarter across all key routes in the first four months of the year. Reducing migration has been a key pledge for the government, and this could form a central part of its campaign.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

Despite the migration data and the positive economic news, polls indicate a potential historic defeat for the Conservatives against Labour. According to the BBC, 44% of the electoral population intend to vote Labour compared to 23% for Conservative, highlighting the uphill battle the Conservative party faces.

The Conservative party is also experiencing a substantial pre-election exodus, with 135 MPs announcing they will not stand again as of 9am this morning. Last weekend, Rishi Sunak announced a National Service scheme for young people and a Triple Lock Pension Plus in a bid to attract potential Reform voters and the older generations back to the Conservatives.

This week has been fairly quiet on the data front, although we continued to see policy updates from all parties.

EUR

This week was fairly quiet, with German preliminary CPI inflation the only data release of potential impact released on Wednesday. Headline inflation in Germany came in at 2.4% year on year, up from 2.2% in April

However, markets have all but priced in a rate cut at the European Central Bank’s policy meeting next week, so it’s unlikely to have any significant repercussions on either market expectations or the euro.

When it meets next week, the ECB is projected to be the first major central bank to cut rates, which is expected to be the start of a change in monetary policy since accelerating inflation and subsequent interest rate rises led to the unprecedented run of tightening monetary policy that we’ve been seeing since Summer 2021.

Orihuela police make arrest following the theft of high-end car

National Police agents have arrested four men for the theft of a highend vehicle in Orihuela.

The detainees of Spanish nationality, three men between 29 and 35 years old and one a minor, have been charged with the crimes of vehicle theft, road safety and damage. Likewise, the four perpetrators of the robbery have been placed at the disposal of the Orihuela Guardia Court of Investigation.

The events occurred in the early hours of the night while the owner of the vehicle was having dinner at an establishment and saw his car driven by strangers passing by. After his astonishment he called the National Police immediately.

The National Police agents established a surveillance device on the

main exit routes of the city until, in a few minutes, they found the car, a high-end, high-power car. When the police officers proceeded to stop him, the vehicle accelerated its speed trying to evade the patrols. At that moment, a high-speed chase began, endangering the safety of road users.

The National Police patrols managed to catch up with him after seeing how the

vehicle collided with the sidewalk. This impact left the car unusable.

At that moment the occupants left the car to run away in different directions, finally being intercepted.

The perpetrators of the robbery had entered the garage where the vehicle was located, managed to steal the keys from the inside of another car and thus were able to steal it.

Conquering Montgó for DiabetesCERO

Last week eight brave hikers (and a dog!) took on the Montgó mountain in aid of DiabetesCERO.

Led by four team members from Specsavers Ópticas in Javea, they set off at 9am. Facing their fear of heights and sticking together, they made great progress and reached the summit in one hour and 45 minutes.

The team raised €225 of their €250 goal, but you can still support the charity via their Go Fund Me page or drop in a donation into the collection tin in store.

Optometrist Martín Barrera explains, “We had a great time on Sunday! Thanks to everyone who joined us and sponsored us to complete the climb. We managed to make it

to the summit and back in under three hours, quicker than we expected. The most challenging part was near the summit, where some of us had to face our fear of heights to make it up the huge cliffs, but we all managed to get through it together!

The weather was glorious, and we met quite a few more people during the climb and were able to talk about DiabetesCERO’s fantastic work, as well as raise awareness of the link between diabetes and vision loss, something which we are very passionate about.

If you have diabetes, or are at a high risk of developing it, please get your eyes tested regularly to spot signs of diabetic retinopathy.

If this is undiagnosed and untreated, this can develop into Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), among other problems, and cause permanent vision impairment and blindness. Please protect your vision by having your eyes tests on a regular basis.”

You can find Specsavers Ópticas Javea just off the Carretera Cabo la Nao-Pla, near Servicolor, at Avenida Del Pla 125, Edificio Caribe, Local 6, Jávea, 03730. Request your free eye test at www.specsavers.es or pop into the store to make a donation to DiabetesCERO. The team will be fundraising for the charity throughout the year.

Last year was second hottest on record, says Aemet

In 2023, Spain broke 44 warm-day records, surpassing expectations by nine and recording no cold-day records. Under typical climate conditions, five records of each type would be anticipated. This information comes from the 2023 climate report presented by the national weather agency (Aemet) on Thursday. The report confirmed that 2023 was the second warmest year on record, following 2022, with an average temperature of 15.2°C (compared to 15.4°C in 2022). It was also the sixth driest year since records began in 1961.

The report provided a detailed analysis of the most significant weather and climate trends throughout 2023. Over the past decade, there have been 196 warm-day records compared to just seven cold-day records, illustrating the impact of global warming from greenhouse

gas emissions. This warming has increased the average temperature by 1.2°C compared to the 19912020 reference period, and by 1.5°C since 1961.

“In 2022, the warmest year on record, there were 35 warm-day records, but in 2023, there were nine more days with record heat, an unprecedented occurrence,” said Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo.

The presentation also featured Aemet president María José Rallo, who highlighted that in the last decade, for every record cold day, there have been 28 record warm days. The last record cold day was in April 2022, over two years ago. Del Campo noted that as of 2024, there have already been 19 warm-day records, four times the normal amount, with no record cold days.

According to the report, all months of 2023, except January, February, and May, were warm or extremely warm. “This is the first

year since 1961 with no cold month. The last cold month was April 2022, marking over two years without one, an extraordinary anomaly,” del Campo said.

Additionally, 2023 had the warmest spring on record, the third warmest summer, and the second warmest autumn. Despite the absence of cold-day records, there were two cold snaps, with one starting on February 28 being the third latest on record. However, high-temperature episodes were predominant. There were seven heat waves (four on the Peninsula and Balearic Islands and three in the Canary Islands), and two hightemperature episodes in April (reaching 40°C in Cordoba) and October. On August 12, the Guía de Isora weather station in Tenerife recorded a minimum temperature of 37.4°C, the highest ever in Spain since records began.

THE STORY OF MUSHROOM STREET

During the last years of

the 20th century, the street namely Calle San Francisco had a gloomy appearance, with a lack of conservation, and suffered a high level of citizen insecurity from the street prostitution and illegal businesses. It was not until the first decade of the 21st century that the city council began to propose solutions to solve the problem, such as the closure of some businesses, and the pedestrianization of the street. At the end of 2013, the mayor of Alicante, Sonia Castedo,

decided to theme the street with large mushroom figures. The floor was painted green and yellow and hopscotches were drawn.

Despite the initial controversy (the investment cost was around 60,000 euros), the street attracted the attention of tourists and increased the opening of new businesses. Since then, the street has been popularly known as Mushroom Street.

The WOW Beach experience is back

This Friday June 7 sees the beach club of Las Colinas Golf & Country Club open its doors, located on the beach of La Glea de Dehesa de Campoamor (Orihuela). It opens the summer season with a renovated terrace, its famous infinity pool and the best gastronomy.

Entering WOW Beach is to immerse yourself in a place reminiscent of those paradisiacal corners that show us the most beautiful postcards and photos of the best travel portals. But this particular

paradise has a great advantage for lovers of sun and sea: it is not located on distant shores, but south of the coast of the province of Alicante, on the beach of La Glea, Dehesa de Campoamor.

It has a privileged location, as it is situated on the beachfront and offers fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea. For anyone who wants to live a one hundred percent summer and unique experience, it is undoubtedly the ideal choice.

As those who know it already know, WOW Beach has a hammock area or exclusive Balinese beds

with champagne, overlooking the spectacular infinity pool. As a novelty compared to last summer, this year the terrace area has a new look. The color white is more present in its design, which enhances the contrast with the blue of the pool water, the sky and the sea.

In addition to the already relaxing atmosphere of the pool, there is also a bar service with original cocktails that combine different flavors and degrees of intensity and combine perfectly with the summer and the sea.

In addition, it is possible to enjoy the gastronomic offer offered by the WOW Beach restaurant at noon. With a clear Mediterranean style, it is characterized mainly by quality and the use of local ingredients of maximum freshness. Its menu offers diners a varied offer of highly selected dishes that combine products from the garden, meats and, of course, the best fish. Especially recommended are its rice dishes, cooked with the mastery of this part of the Mediterranean.

Il Palco at WOW Beach: authentic Italian dinners in front of the sea

The best dishes of the Italian restaurant of Las Colinas Golf

& Country, il Palco, come to WOW Beach during the months of July and August to turn dinners into an unforgettable gastronomic evening.

Chef Fonsi Lillo has made a selection of il Palco’s star dishes to offer them at WOW Beach’s Mediterranean nights. Along with this selection, this year a series of new dishes will be added that can only be tasted there because they are designed exclusively to be enjoyed by the sea. For those who wish to enjoy il Placo at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, you can also do so during the summer at night.

Inauguration with a taste of the sea: Ronqueo

As last year, the inaugural event of the WOW Beach summer season will be the Ronqueo, a traditional live hand-cutting of a 300-kilogram bluefin tuna, which will take place on Thursday, June 13.

This technique has a millenary character and dates back to the time of the Phoenicians. WOW Beach brought last year for the first time to the beach of La Glea this show, considered of cultural interest. Once the cutting of the tuna is finished, the tuna will be tasted in different dishes.

SPANGLES 20TH ANNIVERSARY OFF TO A GOOD START

With twenty years of singing harmony together, Spangles is excited to tell you more about their plans to celebrate this momentous event throughout 2024!

The brainchild of Lyn Baines and Anthea Prentice, back in 2004, the chorus continues the ethos of friendship through the love of singing. As they have said many times, Spangles is more than just a group of girls singing together once a week. Not only do they sing together, but they also play together and look out for each other. With many members living away from their homeland, family and friends, Spangles is their second family.

Since returning to rehearsals after their Christmas break, they held a successful Open House and were very happy to welcome several new members. By the end of March, some of them were able to sing in two invitational concerts

in Jalón and Calpe, and a Spring Concert in Sucina in April.

“Our new members are amazing and have learned our repertoire in a very short time” said Musical Director, Babs. “We’re so very proud of how well they have grown and become part of our community”.

Afternoon Teas are something Spangles is famous for, so this had to be the choice for the start of their 20th anniversary events. Held on Thursday, 23 May at the beautiful Butterfly Garden, Spangles didn’t disappoint. The event was a sellout, and the afternoon was a huge success.

“We received lots of lovely comments from our guests about the authentic delicious food, the organisation of our event and of course, our singing! We’re all very happy and proud” said Lyn Baines, Chorus Manager. “Every single Spangle contributed to the event and worked hard throughout the

afternoon. Hats off to the two team leaders, Pat and Janice, who coordinated everything so well it ran like clockwork.”

As a result, Spangles was delighted to contribute to their nominated charity, Fundación Rafa Puede, which welcomes any child with a disability to become part of their group and join in their many activities. They are also looking for volunteers, so please check out their Facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/ fundacionrafapuede.org

As part of the ongoing celebrations, Spangles is travelling to Prague in November to represent Los Alcázares in the Gloria Festival.

“You may remember we took part in an online festival during the Pandemic. Now we are finally realising our dream of being there in person, singing in some wonderful venues, including the St

Vitus Cathedral” said Lyn. Other events are being planned!

A concert of celebration and a dinner dance are just two of them. Keep an eye on Spangles social media and website for updates and news.

Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every

Thursday, from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus.com orr email info@spangleschorus.com

“When I double click on a file it opens in the wrong application. How can I get my computer to open this file in the correct App”?

In computing, when you doubleclick on a file “file association” associates that file with an application capable of opening that file. More commonly, a file association associates a class of files (usually determined by their filename extension, such as .txt)

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 400 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.

with a corresponding application (such as a text editor).

For more individual control over default app association, Windows also allows the setting of default apps to open specific file types.

Open Settings and search for the “Default apps” menu, click on Choose default apps by file type at the bottom of the screen. Click to highlight the file extension you wish to change in the Name column, then click on the corresponding Default app to have this app open the particular file type. I would suggest setting the most common file types you use, to open using the applications you have installed on your computer. Examples are .doc to open in Word or Open Office, .xls to open in Excel or Open Office.

“How do I keep a new mobile phone battery in optimal condition”?

Avoid full charge cycles (0-100%) and overnight charging. Instead, top up your phone more regularly with partial charges.

Limiting your smartphone’s maximum charge to 80-90% is better for the battery’s health than topping up to full every time. Never leave charging overnight.

Heat has the potential to accelerate battery health degradation. Don’t

cover your phone when charging and keep it out of warmer places. Don’t play intensive games, stream videos, or run other intensive workloads while charging to avoid heat and stressing the battery.

“What is the difference between Malware and a Virus”?

Malware is a general term for any malicious software. A virus is a specific type of malware that selfreplicates by inserting its code into other programs. A virus or malware can be downloaded to any device while online. To reduce the risk:

•Keep your computer and software updated which will include antivirus updates.

•Think twice before clicking links or downloading anything.

•Be careful about opening email attachments or images.

•Don’t trust pop-up windows that ask you to download software.

What are the symptoms of FLiRT, the new coronavirus variant recently detected in Spain?

The world first became aware of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, following a significant outbreak in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. This event ushered in several years of global concern due to the virus’s high contagion and mortality rates. Today, COVID-19 resembles the flu in its severity, with severe cases becoming virtually non-existent worldwide. However, the virus continues to evolve, producing new variants that require ongoing vigilance.

The latest variant, named FLiRT (KP.2), has drawn scientists’ attention due to its rapid spread, although it has not yet been proven more severe. It has become the dominant strain in the United States and the United Kingdom, with the first cases recently reported in Spain (Catalonia and the Basque Country).

Low cost airlines hit with 150-millioneuro fine in Spain for carry-on luggage

Experts caution that it is too early to determine if this new variant, which emerged from the Omicron sub-group, will significantly impact public health, especially given the high vaccination rates and other factors. Infections in the USA

May 5 (up from 24.9% between April 14 and 27), making it the dominant strain, surpassing JN.1 (currently at 22%).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was the first to report this strain, identifying a new set of variants through sewage surveillance across the country. According to the CDC, this variant accounted for 28.2% of cases in the U.S. between April 28 and

Reported cases of this variant exhibit symptoms similar to other COVID-19 variants. Common signs include fever, cough, congestion, and runny nose. Additionally, some cases have reported sore throat, headache, muscle pain, and chills. Other symptoms can include vomiting, loss of taste and smell, and diarrhea.

Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs has fined four low-cost airlines— Ryanair, Volotea, Vueling, and easyJet—a total of 150 million euros for charging passengers for carry-on luggage and requiring printed tickets. This marks the largest penalty in the history of low-cost carriers for fees on carry-on baggage, seat selection for passengers with dependents, lack of contractual transparency, and prohibiting cash payments. The investigation began in 2023 following complaints from consumer associations like Facua. Despite the airlines’ responses to the allegations, the fine was imposed, although they insist the case is not closed and may be appealed. According to the Airline Association (ALA), 50 million passengers travel annually with only a small piece of hand luggage under the seat. The airlines argue that the fine violates European regulations and limits their ability to set prices freely,

potentially leading to higher fares for passengers. ALA also warns that this regulation could reduce Spain’s competitiveness in the aviation sector.

Conversely, the financial user association Asufin welcomed the “historic sanction,” hoping it will curb what they see as the airlines’ disregard for consumer rights. Asufin has an ongoing classaction lawsuit against Volotea for “abusive fares” due to a contract

modification clause.

The airlines note that the judicial process is still ongoing and there is a possibility of an appeal. ALA asserts that their practices are legal and that European legislation supports their right to set fares. This move conflicts with a recent European Commission initiative advocating for common carry-on baggage allowances, which aims to provide more options and advantages for passengers.

Liam Gallagher has left his rock and roll lifestyle in the past and is opting for a healthier routine ahead of the Definitely Maybe anniversary tour.

The musician, 51, is set to embark on a huge arena tour starting this month, with venues including London’s O2 Arena, Manchester’s Co-Op Live and Glasgow’s OVO Hydro.

And in preparation him and his partner Debbie Gwyther have relocated to the Cotswolds for a dose of outdoor living while their London home is being renovated.

Loose Women star Katie Piper revealed she’s planning on having more surgery on her face 16 years after a horrifying attack.

The TV presenter and philanthropist was the victim of a vile acid attack in 2008, which left her blind in one eye and severely burned, after her abusive ex-boyfriend hired a man to throw acid in her face following the breakdown of their relationship.

Since the brutal assault, Katie has undergone more than 400 surgeries, including painful skin grafts, and in November last year, she underwent an operation to sew her eyelid shut in order to save her damaged eye.

Katie, 40, has bravely documented her journey on social media, and launched The Katie Piper Foundation helping burns victims, which eventually led to her being awarded an OBE in 2022.

The Loose Women panellist, who is preparing for the launch of her very own breakfast show on ITV, has now revealed she’s planning on more operations this year to deal with the scar tissue from the burns on her face.

Speaking to OK!, Katie explained that her injuries are “all connected with my ears, nose and throat, as well as my

eyes,” and after having the operation to sew her eyelid shut in November to save her eye, she’s feeling lucky to be a survivor. “It’s a cliché, but I always meet people who are worse off than me. It’s not something I feel bad about because I have lived with this for over 15 years, and I am very lucky and grateful to the NHS for all the incredible treatments I have endured,” Katie shared.

Andrew has become a prisoner of his own pride, a friend of King Charles has claimed.

Duke of York, 64, is believed to have refused to leave his home - the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park in Berkshire - and the monarch is reportedly not willing to continue to fund his brother’s lifestyle.

It has left Andrew an increasingly isolated and tragic figure in the

Grade II listed house, it is said, and he now “spends his days watching television in a darkened room”. Andrew had last year struck a deal with the monarch to remain at the Royal Lodge but the situation has since changed, according to reports.

A friend of King Charles said: “As things stand, life at Royal Lodge is set to become increasingly cold and uncomfortable for the duke. The only question now is when he will realise that he has become a prisoner of his own pride — and that handing back the keys will afford him far greater comfort, and the continued support of his family.”

ndrew, who no longer has official duties, shares the sprawling 30room mansion in Windsor with just his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. It was the Windsor residence of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from 1952 until she died there in 2002, at the age of 101. Two years later, it officially became Andrew’s home but the father of two was forced to step down from royal duties amid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

My husband and I do not like my son’s girlfriend. He has been dating her for about a year. He tells us she is his intended, and will not split up with her. As far as we can see, she is taking him away from home and we will no longer have a relationship with him. Recently there was a huge row in our house over whether he should bring her to our other son’s wedding, as his plus one. She was purposely not put on the invitation and this angered our son. His argument was that she is going to be one of the family. He stayed away for weeks; only when we spoke again at the wedding, did he discuss the situation again with us. She was there at the wedding as his partner, and my son accuses us of not speaking to her. I invited my son to his grandmother’s birthday party that we were hosting, but told him to come alone as this girl is not family, and it was only for family. He did not attend. To our mind, she

is not suitable for him.

Your son has told you that his girlfriend of one year, is his intended; and even though he is not yet engaged, you must accept her as his partner, future wife and the mother of your future grandchildren. Perhaps you have good reason not to like her; however, she is your son’s choice and it is nothing to do with anyone else. If he were being badly treated you might have a say out of concern, but for simply not liking her is not a good enough reason to your son. It’s his life; his choices on how and whoever he shares it with.

Oesophageal cancer is thirty times more common in patients with Barrett’s oesophagus

Oesophageal cancer is thirty times more common in patients with Barrett’s Oesophagus, as warned by Dr. Pedro Bretcha, head of the Digestive System Surgery and Surgical Oncology Service at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital.

Barrett’s oesophagus is a littleknown but potentially dangerous digestive disorder that affects the lining of the oesophagus caused by chronic gastroesophageal reflux.

The fundamental symptom of Barrett’s oesophagus is heartburn, which is colloquially known as burning. “The burning,” explains Dr. Juan Antonio Casellas, head of the Digestive System and Advanced Endoscopy Service at Quirónsalud Alicante, “consists of an unpleasant, sometimes painful, burning sensation that rises and falls from the pit of the stomach to the neck behind the sternum. It is often accompanied by regurgitation of gastric contents into the mouth.”

How Barrett’s Oesophagus Is Diagnosed

To confirm the diagnosis of Barrett’s oesophagus, an upper

gastrointestinal endoscopy is necessary. “This test,” Dr. Casellas describes, “consists of inserting a small tube through the mouth, progressing into the oesophagus and analysing if there is a change in the cells of the distal oesophagus, right at the junction with the stomach. Usually, the appearance of the oesophagus can suggest the existence of a Barrett’s oesophagus during endoscopy. However, the diagnosis can only be confirmed with small tissue samples obtained through the endoscope and sent to the pathology laboratory.” The test is performed under sedation and does not require any special preparation, just fasting.

If it is positive, the specialist in the Digestive System at Quirónsalud Alicante recommends repeating it regularly in order to detect possible cancer at an early and potentially curable stage.

Anti-reflux surgery at Quirónsalud

Torrevieja Hospital

Laparoscopic surgery is highly effective for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux and definitively eliminating the use of

medications that, in the long run, cause side effects. Nine out of ten patients treated with anti-reflux surgery manage to relieve their symptoms and only 15% have a recurrence after five years.

As Dr. Bretcha explains, “The surgery is performed under

general anaesthesia and consists of constructing a complete or partial cuff with the stomach around the oesophagus, placing it under the diaphragm. To do this, small incisions of just a few millimetres are made to access the abdomen through the laparoscope, which is connected

to a small video camera to obtain a complete view of the abdominal cavity.” Among the advantages of the laparoscopic approach are the reduction of postoperative pain, brief hospital stay, minimal scarring and rapid return to work.

A massive data breach at Spain’s DGT

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior is grappling with a severe cybersecurity breach, potentially the largest in its history. In early May, a cyberattack targeted the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), resulting in the theft of data pertaining to 34.4 million drivers and their vehicles. This sensitive information, including names, ID numbers, addresses, vehicle details, and active insurance information, has been put up for sale on various deep web platforms since at least May 13. One of the alleged hackers, operating under the pseudonym ‘PeTu’ on Breachforums, a notorious cybercriminal hub, claimed that the stolen database could be queried for any license plate or document related to the drivers. Although the hackers have not set a specific price for the data, experts estimate its value to be several hundred thousand euros. The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) is currently investigating the breach. The DGT has identified and blocked several suspicious users who attempted to access the database during the attack period and reported their identities to the authorities. Despite the extensive nature of the breach, the DGT

has not yet officially confirmed the incident or its scale.

Although the stolen data does not include passwords, personal codes, or account numbers, it still poses a significant risk. Such detailed personal information can be exploited for phishing attacks, identity theft, and other malicious activities.

This breach is part of a broader surge in cybersecurity incidents in Spain in recent months. Other significant breaches include:

Iberdrola: Data from 850,000 customers was stolen between May 5 and 7, exploiting a security flaw in an external supplier’s systems. The data, totaling 1.5 gigabytes, was quickly offered for sale on hacker forums.

Telefónica: Approximately 120,000 users and company employees had their data compromised, with hackers claiming to possess a database containing over 2.6 million records. Banco del Santander: Unauthorized access was reported, affecting customer data in Spain, Chile, and Uruguay, as well as information on around 200,000 current and former employees. These incidents highlight a troubling trend in Spain’s cybersecurity landscape, emphasizing the urgent need for robust security measures and rapid response strategies to protect sensitive information from cybercriminals.

The TKD González de Orihuela Club sweeps the Hungarian Open

The Hungarian Taekwondo and Para-Taekwondo Open brought together 46 teams from 14 countries and more than 400 competitors, and athletes from the González de Orihuela TKD Club traveled to Budapest , along with technicians and family members, to embark on an enriching sporting and professional.

With only seven participants, the team managed to bring the name of Orihuela to the top of the podium, demonstrating a high level of competition and commendable dedication.

The adventure resulted in 12 intense hours of combat and technique, the latter being developed individually, in pairs and trios.

This achievement is the result of two years of hard work and preparation. During the last few months, the TKD González Club has participated in several competitions at the autonomous

community level, which has allowed them to acquire the experience and confidence necessary for their international debut. The athletes have trained intensely from Monday to Saturday at the Palacio del Agua facilities , which has been crucial for their preparation.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at El Plantio

On 29th May thirty two members ‘teed it up’ at El Plantio to compete in an Individual Stableford competition and the Society’s 2nd Eclectic of the year. The weather was almost perfect for golf, with just a few occasional breezes. A number of fairways looked like patchwork quilts, with polythene covering great swathes of them. Presumably these polythene patches are there to enable the grass to regrow, having been depleted following the long drought. However, I for one and others lost balls under these sheets !

Many of the bunkers, as they have been for some time now, were devoid almost of any sand. Some of the tee boxes were

also very scruffy. Following the game as usual, we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were served Tapas by the helpful and friendly staff.

Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight postponed

The highly anticipated Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight has been postponed due to Mike Tyson’s recent health issues. Tyson experienced an ulcer flare-up during a cross-country flight, resulting in nausea and dizziness. Although initially determined to continue with the fight, Tyson’s condition has worsened, affecting his ability to train adequately. Netflix, the event’s broadcaster, announced that the fight, originally scheduled for July 20, will be rescheduled for later this year once Tyson can train without limitations, ensuring both fighters have sufficient preparation time.

Ulcers are open wounds in the stomach lining, which can cause significant discomfort and complications if not treated properly. Depending on the severity, treatments can range from medication to surgery. If Tyson requires surgery, he will need a recovery period, especially to avoid any trauma to the stomach area.

Fans and stakeholders are hopeful for a new date later in the year when Tyson’s health is fully restored, and he can compete at his best.

The Free Game Draw was won by Brian Coultate.

The 2s ‘pot’ was claimed by Sarah Potter, as she was the only player to achieve a 2. Finally, our next game an Individual Stableford is at Roda on 12th. June.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 28th if May we fished the 3rd round of the Summer series at the El Bosquet complex near to Crevillent. For various reasons only 12 anglers turned out on what was a glorious sunny day. Upon arrival at 7.30 we found that 4 fishermen were already fishing on pegs 8 to 16 even though we had booked them with the owners. On this occassion we did not ask the anglers to leave abnd decide to fish other stretches. This will not be the case next week when we will be fishing pegs A1 to 16 for a pairs match.

Sections in Pegs 26 to 40 and pegs 17 to 25 were selected to be fished with one section of 4 on the newly extended pegs 17 to 25.

Winner on the day from

peg 27 was Nick Bastock. Nick fished the pole across with a maggots or pellet and weighed a credible 26.30kg.

In second place was John Waples who was unusually silent at the draw after selecting the fantastic peg 26. John used similar tactics but just fell short of Nick with 17.90kg.

In third place from the other end of the section on peg 36 was Lenny Bolton. Lenny again fished the pole and feeder and weighed 14.96kg.

Pegs 17 to 25 did not fish particularly well but the boy, Neil Mcbernie won that section on the pole with maggots. From peg 21 he caught several carp for 8.48kg.

Rods N Reels

The following day we made

the short journey into Murcia to fish the Rio Segura in the town centre. This river can be very moody and this was in fact the case. Everyone caught but it was a struggle.

Winner on the day on the first peg past the first bridge was Bill Cannon. Bill fished the feeder and completed a runaway victory with 15.04kg ofInCarp.second place was Terry Stroud, who used similar tactics from peg 2 after the first set of reeds for 7.74kg.

In third place was Graham Patterson who also used the feeder on the far end peg and weighed 6.58kg. In the summer series thing are hotting up with John Waples leading the way.
