Las Ramblas fire could open door for construction

The Orihuela Costa was left shocked and shaken at the end of last week when a vegetation fire swept through more than

10 hectares of land lying between Las Ramblas and Campoamor. At its height it was feared the blaze

could destroy not only the golf courses but people’s homes.

The fire broke out Thursday at around 5.30pm near to the TajoSegura transfer canal and spread near to homes and the protected Sierra Escalona. The fire saw a huge number of resources brought in to help battle the flames, including ground crews, helicopters and a seaplane. The blaze was finally brought under control in the early hours of Friday morning.

their homes. Once again surveillance teams were left in place to monitor the situation. Luckily the fire did not reach the perimeter of the Sierra Escalona Protected Landscape. However, it is now believed that the land that has burned is developable land which falls into a sector the of Territorial Action Plan (PAT) of the Vega Baja, which was being considered by the previous Consell for reclassification.

Developable land

There are now concerns that the fire could

An observation crew of 55 people made up of 40 forest firefighters and 15 members of the Local Police, Civil Guard and Civil Protection remained in place through the night and this was proven to be a fortuitous decision when the fire was reignited by blustery easterly winds in the afternoon. Water dropped from above was once again used to cool the area. Hours later it was back under control, but not before giving a scare when the fire jumped to a place near homes, on Rambla de Oleza street, where the neighbours had to leave

encourage construction in that area as it is no longer forestation. Until the fire the land fell into a grey area where it was deemed developable but was quiet obviously pine forest and Mediterranean scrub vegetation. For this reason, environmentalists believe the land falls outside the scope of the state and Valencian Community legislation on forestry, which states that forest land that has suffered the effects of a fire cannot be classified or reclassified as urban or developable land. Nor may they reduce the protections derived from their use and forest exploitation within a period of 30 years from the time the fire was extinguished. There are now calls for the stretch of land to be included in the protected area and not deemed developable.

Teenager accused of Brit murder dies day before trial starts

The body pulled out of a car wreck on the AP-7 in Orihuela Costa, has been identified as the 18-yearold due to stand trial along-side his mother for the murder of an 80-year-old British women in Elche.

The youngster was arrested along with his mother following the stabbing and shooting of 80-year-old Monica Warren at her home in Elche. He died a day before his murder trial was scheduled to get underway at a youth court in Alicante after losing control of his convertible Mercedes on the AP-7 motorway near Campoamor.

The youngster, who has not been named and was on bail following an

initial remand in a youth detention centre, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Youth court prosecutors are understood to have been seeking an eight-year custodial sentence for the teenager if he was found guilty of Mrs Warren’s murder. The boy who died in the traffic accident, 16 at the time of the killing, was accused of helping his mother move the victim’s body after she was stabbed and then shot.

Police said after the murder they homed in on the suspects after the mother’s car caught fire in Alicante, shortly after Mrs Warren’s body was found at her home. A plumber the

Brit had called to her home to carry out an urgent repair, raised the alarm when he was unable to get her to answer the door.

He told a 999 operator he was concerned because he had seen two people wearing hoodies leaving the OAP’s home and driving off in a black Peugeot.

The mother’s trial, which was due to take place separately, is expected to start after the summer.

The accused’s car was discovered off the road, upside down in a palm grove, there were no witnesses and the fire brigade were called to the scene to remove the body.

Summer season officially begins on the beaches of Orihuela

The Coastal Department for Orihuela has launched the rescue and lifeguard service on the municipality’s beaches to protect the safety and well-being of beachgoers during the high season.

Since 15th June, the service has been active every day from 10am to 7pm until 1st July. After that the hours will be extended from 10am to 8pm until 15th September.

The service will have a wide range of resources able to deal with any emergency that may arise on the beaches. There will be a jet ski and a basic life support ambulance (BLS). From July the resources will be increased with a rescue zodiac

in atable boat, a second jet ski and an advanced life support ambulance (ALS).

As for the sta , in the high season, the tea is expanded to 27 lifeguards, three bosses, four assistants, three emergency technicians and a nurse.

In its commitment to inclusion, the Coastal Department has enabled speci c points on the beaches to facilitate bathing for people with reduced mobility, ensuring that everyone can enjoy coastal spaces in a safe and accessible way.

With these services in place, the Department rea rms its obligation to the safety of its beaches, inviting

everyone to enjoy a calm and safe summer on the beaches of Orihuela.

Night excursions on tourist routes for July

The Orihuela Tourism Department presents an innovative proposal for the month of July with a series of night tours that highlight the rich biodiversity and natural landscapes of Orihuela.

“We have prepared some truly refreshing routes for the month of July,” said Orihuela Tourism Councillor, Gonzalo Montoya. These tourist tours aim to promote nature tourism during summer nights, o ering an alternative to high daytime temperatures.”

Orihuela, known for its biological diversity and valuable natural landscapes, o ers the perfect setting for the development of tourist activities that allow visitors to explore and enjoy its environmental wealth. “We have dedicated the July routes to nature, to the ora and fauna of our municipality, a tourist aspect of our land that we have wanted to highlight,” said the Councillor.

Among the places of interest, the Protected Landscape of Sierra Escalona, the Palmeral of Orihuela and the underwater Posidonia meadows in Cabo Roig stand out, which together form a mosaic of unique ecosystems.

Each route will be guided by a local biodiversity expert who will use specialised tools, such as ultrasonic bat detectors and thermal cameras, to o er detailed and respectful observation of wildlife.

Among the night routes scheduled for July is “El Río Nacimiento and the Mystery of the Nightingale”. This is a guided tour of the Albufera de la Glea on Thursday, 4th July, where participants will be able to discover the

secrets of the nightingale, a melodic bird that sings both day and night after his arrival from Africa in April.

Continuing with the night routes is “La Sierra del Búho Real es en Orihuela”, on Thursday, 11th July in Sierra Escalona, which will o er a close encounter with the majestic eagle owl, the largest nocturnal bird of prey in Europe. Participants will begin the night with the “in situ” dissection of a pellet, discovering the varied diet of the eagle owl. Thanks to technology, they will have digital access to the nest of these impressive animals. The route will also include the observation of other fascinating species, as well as the opportunity to discover the secret life of foxes through their tracks and distinctive nocturnal howls.

On Friday, 19th July “The Wild Nights of the Orihuela Palmeral” will take place, an excursion through the Orihuela Palmeral, an oasis of biodiversity where you can observe bats, hedgehogs and owls, among other species, in their nocturnal habitat. The activity will take place in one of the most emblematic places in the city, o ering a unique experience of coexistence with nature during the night.

Thursday, 25th July, is the route

“The Okavango Oriolano: The Magic of the Herons and the Sunset”. On this tour, participants will be able to enjoy an impressive natural spectacle at the Orihuela Mill, where cattle egrets, egrets and other birds return to roost and feed their chicks at dusk. The tour will be guided by an ornithologist who

will provide binoculars and telescopes for detailed observation, becoming passionate ornithologists for a night.

The last week of July the route “Desamparados, the Oriolan Otter Refuge” will take place on Friday, 26th July. This activity will focus on the fauna of the Segura River, where the otter has regained its habitat after the improvement of the river’s condition.

Completing the night routes, a cultural visit has been scheduled on Saturday, 27th July with “Night at the Museum”, which will take place at the Orihuela Museum of Sacred Art, o ering a cultural experience in a nighttime environment for the rst time.

The July routes also include excursions to trails on the Orihuela Costa, such as “Pink Sunsets: The Flamenco Route along the Orihuela Coast”, on Thursday, 18th July, which will allow visitors to observe amingos and other seabirds at sunset, o ering photographic opportunities in a natural setting full of life and colour.

On Sunday, 21st July, the route “Las Dunas de Orihuela, Last Bastion of Protected Flora” will take place, which will take participants to explore the dunes of Campoamor, learning about the diversity of protected plants and the importance of their conservation for future generations.

Cultural routes

Among the cultural routes, “Tras las Huellas de Miguel” and “Los Rincones de

Miguel” stand out on Thursday, 4th July and Saturday, 13th July, respectively, dedicated to the gure of the Oriolano poet Miguel Hernández. Themed tours will also be carried out during the week of the festivities of the Reconquista of Moors and Christians, such as “Las Santas y la Leyenda” on Tuesday, 16th July and “Santiago, Patron Saint of Spain” on Thursday, 25th July, which will

Valenica homes Beluga whales rescued from Ukraine

Marine mammal care specialists from Oceanogrà c de Valencia, Georgia Aquarium and SeaWorld assisted the NEMO Dolphinarium in Ukraine on in an heroic rescue of two beluga whales from the warravaged region of Kharkiv. The city is facing increasing threat from artillery re, which has intensi ed in recent weeks, with bombs dropping within a few hundred meters of the aquarium.

The high-risk, complex rescue operation presented numerous challenges and required multinational collaboration. The belugas, a 15-year-old male named Plombir and a 14-yearold female named Miranda, arrived in Valencia in delicate health, following a gruelling journey across the war zone. Their evacuation included a dangerous 12-hour drive from Kharkiv to Odesa. From there the Ukrainian caregivers met the international team from Oceanogrà c, Georgia Aquarium and SeaWorld who quickly conducted health checks and continued onward to Moldova border where the European Anti-Fraud O ce, part of the European Commission, served a crucial role in speeding up the border crossing. A six-seater chartered plane awaited the rescue team in Chisinau to y onward to

Valencia where the General Director of Natural and Animal Environment of Valencia, Raúl Mérida, met the rescue team at the Valencia airport.

The president of the Valencia region Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, said: “This courageous rescue constitutes a historic milestone worldwide in terms of animal protection. It is an honour that the Oceanogrà c has rescued these two belugas from the horror of the war in Ukraine. They have experienced a di cult situation in recent months, and the experts at Oceanogrà c will be working intensely to help them recover.”

Oceanogrà c Valencia is the largest aquarium in Europe and the only one on the continent that has belugas in its facilities. In addition, it is the closest marine conservation centre to

Ukraine and is accredited by the most rigorous international organisations in animal welfare. Since the war began in 2022, the dolphinarium has been bravely evacuating animals, including seals, sea lions and dolphins, as quickly as it could, but moving belugas is an extremely complex logistical operation due to their size and speci c needs. It required months of preparations and the participation of international experts.

The belugas are being provided with a specialized team of medical, nutritional and behavioural experts at Oceanogra c to assist in recovery from the traumas they have endured. Two Ukrainian caregivers are staying with them for the rst couple weeks to help with their transition and care.

Drug trafficker arrested for dealing in Orihuela and across the province

National Police o cers have arrested a medium-scale drug tra cker who supplied other small dealers in the province. To avoid detection, the man hid the drugs in “caletas”. These are camou aged holes created in vehicles to hide illegal merchandise, such as drugs, weapons or money for transportation. The detainee used three properties in Elche, Orihuela and a storage room in the city of Alicante.

The investigations carried out revealed that the alleged perpetrator could be using at least two di erent homes and a storage facility to hide hashish and he would distribute it by vehicle to di erent towns in the province. Searches were carried out in these properties and drugs were found in all of them.

Police mounted an operation around the places frequented by the accused, and he was eventually spotted approaching one of these addresses. O cers intercepted him and began a thorough search of the interior of his vehicle, which was transferred to the police station, where a new, more thorough search was carried out. During the search another new compartment or double bottom was found in the trunk of the car where an even greater amount of hashish was hidden; in

total the vehicle was transporting 20 kilos of drugs.

After the arrest, searches were carried out. The o cers went to one of the homes under surveillance where it was presumed that more narcotic substances could be stored. When they arrived at the property, they ran into a minor who was leaving, who turned out to be one of the sons of the accused. The lad was carrying a plastic bag with a wrapper inside that contained 260 euros in divided bills. Almost 400 more grams of hashish were found at this address.

During the search of the second home, a larger quantity, 278 kilos, of drugs was found in chest freezers. Finally, another 300 grams were found in a storage room that he visited regularly in the city of Alicante.

The investigation led to the seizure of 50 kilograms of hashish, 20 kilos being in the vehicle that the detainee usually used and the rest found in the three property searches. This would be worth around 100,000 euros on the street.

The detainee, a 42-year-old Spanish male, was handed over to the Orihuela Investigative Courts where he went immediately to prison.

Oldest wine found in Spanish tomb

In 2019, a family in the Andalusian city of Carmona stumbled upon an extraordinary piece of history while renovating their home. Beneath their property lay a remarkably well-preserved Roman necropolis, untouched by time. Among the treasures inside was a glass urn holding what is now recognised as the world’s oldest preserved wine, still in liquid form.

The wine, originally white but now a reddish-brown hue, was found alongside cremated human remains in the ancient tomb. Scientists from the University of Córdoba conducted tests and confirmed that the liquid was a local

sherry-like variety. This fascinating discovery was recently detailed in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

The tomb, dating back to the first half of the first century C.E., features eight burial alcoves carved into its walls. Six of these contained urns made of glass, lead, limestone, or sandstone, each holding human remains. Two urns bore the names Senicio and Hispanae. The wine was discovered in another glass urn, submerged in nearly five litres of the reddish liquid, along with the cremated bones of a man and a gold ring.

Experts identified the liquid as

wine by analysing its chemical composition. The absence of syringic acid, a decomposition byproduct of red wine, indicated that it was made from white grapes specifically.

Before this discovery, the oldest known wine preserved in a liquid state was the Speyer wine bottle, unearthed from a Roman tomb near the German city of Speyer in 1867. The bottle, dated between AD 325 and 350, is the oldest unopened wine bottle known to exist and is exhibited at the Wine Museum section of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer.

Zenia Boulevard opens new Tourist Information office

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Nuria Montes, visited Orihuela recently on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Tourist Info office in Zenia Boulevard shopping centre in Orihuela Costa. Prior to the opening event, the councillor met with Pepe Vegara, Mayor of the municipality, and the rest of the municipal corporation to analyse and discuss the tourist situation in the town and share strategies.

Nuria Montes was keen to highlight that the Tourist Info offices “are essential to provide

good customer service to visitors, since they are the place where tourists go to receive information, suggestions and proposals that improve and complete their visit to the municipality”, which “are the best example of our hospitality as tourist destinations.”

The head of Tourism also recalled that “Orihuela was the first municipality in the province of Alicante to meet the need to give relevant personal attention and advice to visitors, something that continues to be demonstrated now with the

expansion of these information points.”

She reiterated the Consell’s support for the municipality “to improve the attention and service provided to tourists.”

According to the statistics almost 16,000 people were served last year in the three tourist offices of Orihuela, 42% of them being international visitors. Specifically, the municipality receives 25% of in-person consultations from the network of offices across the region, which are distributed among 13 municipalities.

PSOE criticises the lack of summer schools in Orihuela

This week marks the end of the school year in Orihuela, and the PSOE has criticized the lack of the promised “awaited summer school” for families.

María García, a socialist councilor, voiced her discontent, noting that Vicente Pina, the councilor for education in the Orihuela City Council, had guaranteed the availability of the summer school this year. Back in April, the Orihuela council had

initiated the tender process for the ‘Municipal Summer School 20242026’ service, with a base budget of 621,895.43 euros for three years, extendable for an additional two years.

Despite the early start compared to the previous year, with only a few days left before the school year ends, families are left scrambling for alternatives to balance their schedules. García emphasized the urgency

for the education councilor to explain the status of the contract and the timeline for the summer school’s implementation.

Additionally, García highlighted ongoing issues with the maintenance contract for educational centers, pointing out that many centers still suffer from significant deficiencies and are awaiting solutions.

Torrevieja flies smoke-free flags on beaches for the first time

Torrevieja will have for the first time the flag of Smoke-free Beaches, an initiative of the Directorate General of Public Health, in which the City Council participates through its departments of Beaches and Public Health.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, has received this flag from the head of the Center for Public Health Area Orihuela, José Antonio García Navarro, with the assistance of the councilman of Public Health, Rosa Cañón, and the councilman of Beaches and Environment, Antonio Vidal.

Eduardo Dolon has reported that the first flag of Smoke-Free Beaches will be raised on the beach of Cabo Cervera, and another will also be raised in the outdoor pool of the Sports City, although in this pool smoking is prohibited. In addition,

informative signs will be installed at the entrances to this beach so that they can be seen by all swimmers. The intention of the City Council is that this pilot project will be extended to other beaches of Torrevieja soon.

This is an initiative that aims to raise awareness among citizens so that the beaches are clean, safe and welcoming spaces for everyone. Therefore, there will be no penalties but all people will be informed that with the implementation of this flag we seek to offer all users of the beaches of Torrevieja a smokefree environment where they can enjoy the fresh, clean air, play in the sand, swim in the sea and participate in outdoor activities without the worry of tobacco smoke.

In addition, this initiative is an important message to children and young people that we are

committed to their wellbeing and the promotion of healthy habits. We are also contributing to the global fight against pollution. Cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of litter on our beaches, and their removal will not only improve the aesthetics of our shorelines, but also protect marine life from the harmful effects of this debris.

Invasive water mammals removed from Orihuela canal

The story of the coypus in Orihuela has come to an end, at least for now, as the captured specimens have been transferred to the Santa Faz Wildlife Recovery Center in Alicante.

The SEPRONA (Civil Guard Nature Protection Service) initiated the search and location protocol for the coypus. These efforts alerted the Department of the Environment to the presence of the animals, a fact confirmed by the staff at the Wildlife Recovery Center. The coypus were observed in the Canal del Reguerón or Azarbe Mayor de Hurchillo, near Vereda Liorna in Orihuela. Once their presence was verified, an operation was organized to capture the rodents, which posed a threat to the local horticulture.

On June 14, a wildlife control specialist, accompanied by personnel from the Wildlife Recovery Center and an environmental agent, traveled to the area. They found the coypus in the same location as previous sightings and successfully captured all six observed

specimens. Since then, no further signs of the species have been found, but surveillance continues in case they reappear.

Coypus are large rodents, weighing around 6 kilograms, and native to South America, making them an invasive species in Spain. Their presence in Spain has been recorded

since the 1970s on the Atlantic slope and in the Catalan Mediterranean. They were introduced to the Iberian Peninsula through escapes from fur farms in France and Catalonia or intentional releases, which is likely how they ended up in the Orihuela area, according to biologist and author Juan Antonio Pujol.

GBP

England came away with a draw from their second match against Denmark at the 2024 Euros. Although this is not what the nation had hoped for England, they remain at the top of their group as they prepare for their match against Slovenia next week Tuesday. Outside of the usual moral boost successful sporting events have, according to a report by Voucher Codes, the tournament is expected to provide a £2.75bn boost to the UK economy, from food and drink sales to electricals, souvenirs, and garden cooking.

Last week was eventful - regarding both currency volatility and the political sphere.

GBP/EUR reached a new two-year high. The pound also increased against the dollar last Wednesday following the US’s CPI inflation data release. The pair reached levels last seen briefly in March this year and July 2023 before we entered the period of dollar strength that dominated the second half of last year.

This week, UK inflation was reported to have fallen to the Bank of England’s 2% target for the first time since July 2021. The latest CPI inflation data was released Wednesday and came in as expected, dropping from 2.3% last month.

Although overall inflation was in line with market forecasts, services inflation came in above expectation, and the Bank of England is still reportedly concerned about wage growth in the UK.

May’s inflation data is released just before the Bank of England’s monetary policy meeting yesterday, when the Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold rates steady at 5.25%. The decision was described as ‘finely balanced’ by the central bank.

The market is now forecasting the potential for a rate cut in August at 66.2%, up from around 30% before the meeting.

This morning, the week’s data releases finished with a raft of Purchasing Managers

Index (PMIs) across the UK, Europe, and the US. The UK has remained in growth, with Manufacturing and Services floating at around 51.

EUR The Russia-Ukraine war has been one of the most significant drivers of spiralling inflation in Europe and the rest of the world over the past few years. Last week, world leaders addressed the conflict at the Ukraine peace summit hosted in Switzerland.

The summit followed four earlier international meetings and aimed to conduct a high-level discussion on a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine.

The summit had mixed success. Of the 92 countries that attended, 80 signed the agreement, with key countries such as Saudi Arabia, India, and South Africa abstaining and China not attending the summit. The outcome of the peace summit backed Ukraine’s territorial integrity but didn’t lay out steps to end the war.

The week started with the ECB’s President, Christine Lagarde, speaking about monetary policy and economic plans for the rest of the year this morning. Today, PMI data was released in Germany, France, and the Eurozone as a whole. Europe saw rangebound figures come in below expectations at 45.6 and 52.6, respectively.

The euro has yet to find any support following the snap election called by France’s President Macron earlier in the month, which took markets by surprise and saw the single currency lose value against a host of major currencies.

Almoradí takes traditional games to the streets

The rope, the rubber, the matado, the hutch, the badges, the handkerchief, the misi pass or the pin pin socorromatín will be some of the traditional games that the boys and girls of Almoradí will be able to enjoy today, June 25 on Pablo Picasso Street.

This is an event organized by the Department of Education in which children will be able to play what their fathers and mothers played on the street when they were their age. It is expected that traditional games and the joy of families playing will ood the town for a few hours, as proposed by the Council of Girls and Boys of Almoradí. Susana Miralles, Councilor for Education of

the Almoradí City Council, promoter of the activity following the premises of the educational psychologist Francesco Tonucci and the Network of Cities for Girls and Boys, which at an international level propose initiatives based on free play, participation and autonomy, is very satis ed with the implementation of this proposal for the rst time in Almoradí. Susana Miralles remembers that “recovering city spaces for boys and girls is of vital importance for their development. Play is inherent to childhood and living it in spaces such as the street and squares enhances their creativity, their imagination and their relationships with their peers. It is an initiative

that many cities in Spain and the world have been carrying out for a long time and Almoradí joins them by allowing families to play together in the street. That families come and tell their sons and daughters what they played when they were their age is the great objective of this initiative.”

The event has the collaboration of the local AMPAS, the Peña Huertana Los Santicos de la Piedra that will show traditional games, the Catral Group company that has provided the necessary material for the adaptation of the space and the Local Police that will cut o tra c this zone.

Spain see an increase of nearly 570,000 jobs so far in 2024

Spain has created over 567,000 jobs in the rst six months of this year, according to the latest data. The gures, which extend up to June 15, are slightly lower than in 2023 when 600,000 new jobs were created. However, Minister for Social Security Elma Saiz stated that these numbers remain robust. Last month, the number of social security contributors exceeded 21.1 million for the rst time. Currently, the average has surpassed 21.3 million, with the 21.4 million mark being exceeded on several days in June.

“It is a gure to celebrate, but we are not going to stop until we achieve full employment,” Saiz said, referring to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s electoral promise to achieve full employment in Spain and reduce the unemployment rate to 8%. The current unemployment rate is close to 12%, and forecasts suggest it

may not reach 8% within the next three years.

Saiz also highlighted positive trends in the enrolment of women (10.1 million up to mid-June), foreigners, young people, and the self-employed. Additionally, 87% of the jobs created are permanent positions.

The information and communication, professional, scienti c, and technical sectors have seen job creation increase by more than 4% since the start of the year, compared to an average of 2.8%.

These sectors now employ more workers than the hotel and catering sector (81,000 compared to 73,000). As of June 15, there are over 14 million people employed with permanent contracts, with more than 9.6 million working full-time. This is an increase of 3.65 million permanent contract workers since the approval of the country’s labor reform.

Torrevieja Hospital receives award for an innovative nutritional therapy project

The University Hospital of Torrevieja has been awarded for its innovative nutritional therapy project during the conference on ‘Updating in nutritional therapy’, which was held last week in Valencia, organized by the Valencian Society of Hospital Pharmacy and endorsed by the Spanish Society of Clinical Nutrition.

The project, initiated at the beginning of this year, aims to integrate the nursing sta of the hospital pharmacy service not only in the preparation of parenteral nutrition, but also in the follow-up of its administration. The speci c area of nutrition was created last year in the Torrevieja center, and since then the team has worked to improve the safety and quality of care for patients in the department.

María José Jover, nurse coordinator of central services stated that “the main objective of the nursing team has always been to provide the best possible care to our patients; this project is an important step in that direction. The integration of nursing sta in parenteral nutrition monitoring not only improves safety, but also strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration within the hospital.”

In addition, “this integration of nursing sta has been a crucial step. Their participation has enabled tighter control and greater precision in the administration of nutritional therapies, resulting in better patient care. This project is a clear example of how innovation and interdisciplinary cooperation can transform clinical practice,” he added.

The initiative consists of implementing a procedure that ensures the follow-up of the administration of parenteral nutrition, from its preparation, dispensing and nal administration to the patient. During these rst months of implementation, the results have been highly positive, re ecting a signi cant increase in the safety and quality of the care provided. Likewise, the reception by plant personnel has been very favorable, highlighting the importance of this type of integration to improve nutritional care.

In recognition of its excellence and innovation, this work has been selected as the best innovative project of the Valencian Community among all those presented at the day of updating in nutritional therapy.

In recognition of its excellence and innovation, this work has been

selected as the best innovative project in the Valencian Community among all those presented at the nutritional therapy update conference.

For his part, Aurelio Cabello, head of the Pharmacy Service, added that “this recognition “is a testimony to the e ort and dedication of our entire team. The implementation of this project has been a great challenge, but the results speak for themselves. We have managed not only to improve the safety and quality of the nutritional care we o er our patients, but also to strengthen collaboration between the di erent departments of the hospital.”

The University Hospital of Torrevieja remains committed to innovation and constant improvement of its care practices, always seeking to o er the best care and safety to its patients.

All plastic bottle tops in Spain to be replaced

The recent change in packaging design requiring tops of plastic bottles and cartons to be permanently attached has been mandated by Spanish law 7/2022, aimed at achieving a sustainable economy. This law aligns with a 2019 European directive intended to reduce environmental waste by ensuring that tops are recycled along with their containers. Starting from July 3, 2024, all tops for containers up to 3 liters must be attached to the product. This measure, initially implemented in Spain in October 2022 by brands like Central Lechera Asturiana, allows companies over a year and a half to adapt. The attached closure, or tops that remain connected to the bottle or carton, is an example of eco-design. This design reduces environmental impact throughout the product’s life cycle, from conception to disposal. The rationale behind this measure is to reduce the environmental footprint by minimizing waste. By ensuring that the tops are recycled together with the bottles, it prevents them from being discarded separately, which often leads to increased litter and pollution. This

change not only aligns with the goals of sustainable development but also fosters a more circular economy where materials are reused and recycled e ciently.

Municipal cleaning companies, like Malaga’s Limasam, have highlighted that this regulation is part of broader

e orts by the European Union and national governments to tackle waste and its environmental impacts. While the transition might complicate direct drinking from the bottles, the longterm bene ts of reduced waste and better recycling practices are considered signi cant advantages.

Despite his legal troubles, Timberlake has assured fans that his tour will continue as planned, with two shows in Chicago scheduled for later this week. In a surprising turn, tickets for one of Timberlake’s shows in Pennsylvania on July 4 have been listed on the resale site Seatgeek for just $11 (£8.67). My daughter gets on well with her stepmother. The split from her father was unpleasant, but we have done our best not to make things acrimonious, for her sake. My ex husband quickly met another woman, who I had suspected he was seeing all along; and she soon became a permanent fixture, with them marrying last year. My former husband is now very successful, and they are gradually offering my daughter a very attractive and privileged lifestyle. Now, things have made a huge turn; I got a chance to move with my job recently; it will mean moving several hundred miles away; and my daughter has announced that she wants to stay and live with her dad and stepmother. She is still under age to make her own decisions, and must come with me; however, she is completely devastated by the move. issue, but nothing changes.

This is a difficult situation for you because you risk your daughter resenting you, for taking her away from the life she wants with her father. You tell me

you have explained everything, and also, your ex husband has explained that she must stay with you until she can make her own decisions; after all, there is a Court Order in place. But ultimately, this is a no win situation. As you daughter is 14 right now, she may just sit it out with you, and when she is able, leave and return to her father anyway. For the sake of your relationship with her, you may decide to give your daughter what she wants because she may likely eventually go back to her father and her stepmother anyway; if you give her what she wants, it may be the lesser of two evils. Talking things through with a trained Counsellor would help you both reach a decision.

EMA launches review of Nolotil

European health authorities are investigating a widely sold painkiller in Spain, Nolotil, due to its alleged risk of causing serious infections.

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) announced that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is examining medicines containing the analgesic metamizole, the active ingredient in Nolotil, Spain’s most widely sold and consumed branded medicine.

The investigation was initiated by the Finnish Medicines Agency after reports of agranulocytosis in individuals who took metamizole-containing medicines. Agranulocytosis is a severe condition characterized by dangerously low white blood cell levels, which can lead to fatal infections if untreated.

The Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) will review the evidence regarding the risk of agranulocytosis for all metamizole-containing medicines authorized in the European Union (EU).

Metamizole in Spain

Metamizole has been marketed in Europe since 1922 and is currently available in 19 EU countries, with usage varying by country. In December 2023, AEMPS issued an information note with recommendations on its usage to prevent the risk of agranulocytosis, based on new data available since 2018.

AEMPS also conducted a study, pending publication, which con rmed that the incidence of agranulocytosis among patients starting metamizole treatment is very low, ranging from 1 to 10 cases per million users in a patient population representative of actual clinical practice in Spain, including patients on treatment for several weeks.

Eight out of ten melanomas are curable if detected early

Patients who already have melanoma are more sensitive to su ering a second one, as well as the immediate relatives of these patients, who must follow strict control

Thanks to Teledermatology, Quirónsalud specialists o er a diagnosis in less than forty-eight hours

According to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, skin cancer already accounts for 8% of the total number of tumours diagnosed, a gure that is increasing and whose registration has increased by 40% in the last 4 years.

The most common type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma (BCC). This type of cancer accounts for about 80% of all non-melanoma skin cancers. It develops in the basal cells, which are the cells in the deepest layer of the epidermis. It usually appears as a small, shiny bump on the skin, often on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, and hands. It can also present as a non-healing sore, a red patch, or a scar. However, we can nd up to more than 100 types of skin cancer. “We could say that basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are the most frequent, in this order,” explains Dr. Lisset Sardá, head

of the Dermatology Service at Quirónsalud Alicante.

Melanoma originates in melanocytes, cells that produce the pigment melanin responsible for skin colour. Although it is less common than other types of skin cancer, it is much more dangerous due to its ability to spread to other parts of the body, that is, to metastasize, although as Dr. Sardá points out, “more than 80% of this type of cancer is curable as long as it is detected in time”.

Symptoms of melanoma, the most dangerous skin tumour Among the main symptoms of melanoma are changes in the size, shape or colour of a mole, the appearance of new growth on the skin, the sensation of itching, pain or bleeding of a mole. “These symptoms should alert us and bring them to the attention of a specialist as soon as possible,” advises Dr. Sardá.

Risk factors for skin cancer

In relation to the behaviours that increase the probability of developing melanoma, the head of the Dermatology Service at Quirónsalud Alicante points out that sunburns during childhood and adolescence are the most linked to melanoma. In addition, people who use ultraviolet tanning booths have a 20 times

higher risk of developing this type of cancer over the course of their lifetime. “We know that the lighter the colour of the skin, hair and eyes of patients, the less ability they have to defend themselves from ultraviolet radiation and develop melanoma more easily, with red-haired individuals being the most at risk. On the other hand, patients who already have melanoma are more sensitive to su ering a second one, as well as the direct relatives of these

patients, who must follow strict control,” says Dr. Sardá. To detect it, Quirónsalud specialists advise following the rules of the ABCDE, an acronym that refers to the asymmetry of this type of lesion, irregular borders, heterogeneous colour and a diameter greater than six millimetres, although the most important is E, its evolution: any change in a mole must be assessed by a dermatologist.

Early diagnosis of skin cancer in Alicante and Torrevieja thanks to Teledermatology

The main advantage o ered by the Teledermatology services of Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Quirónsalud Alicante is the short period of time that elapses between the consultation and the diagnosis of the specialist, which allows it to be addressed as soon as possible in the event of suspected malignancy and to apply the necessary treatment to guarantee a higher cure rate.

The patient is seen in an initial consultation with health personnel trained in dermoscopic techniques which includes a report on the skin lesions and their evolution, as well as important data such as history, risk factors, etc. After this consultation, the specialist will take images using dermoscopic technology that are sent to the dermatologist, who will issue his diagnosis in less than forty-eight hours.

In case of doubt or suspicion of malignancy, the patient will be contacted as a priority and will be o ered a face-to-face appointment in less than two days, in which the specialist will explain their case and the procedure to be followed.

added per vacancy, bringing the staff of this group, in charge of evaluating applicants to obtain a driving license, to more than 800.

Having already passed the training course, which qualifies them for the qualification of all types of driving licenses, these new examiners will join

These additions are part of the commitment of the General Directorate of Traffic to increase the examination capacity in some specific headquarters, as well as to meet the seasonal demand for examinations at specific times, such as during the summer months that They are about to begin.

In addition, to these 54 examiners, another 40 interim examiners will be

According to the general secretary of DGT, Lidón Lozano, “these new additions represent the continuation of the firm commitment to improving the public service provided to citizens, allowing us to increase the capacity to examine, especially at a time of year like summer. “in which a greater demand for applicants to obtain a driving license originates.”

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 18th of June we shed the 6th round of the summer series at El Bosquet near to Crevillent. The weather has sort of settled down after recent storms the match was shed in hot summer conditions with 17 anglers taking part.

Belgium are not doing very well so far in the ongoing European Championships but that cannot be said of Willy Moons. The Belgium angler once again showed us the way, winning his third consecutive match on route to the top of the summer league table. Drawn on peg 2 he shed the method feeder with his shop bought chickpeas and caught some lovely carp and mullet for 22.40kg.

In second place was the old stager

and very consistent angler Lenny Bolton. Drawn on the unfavoured peg 29 he caught carp and mullet on the pole and feeder for 20.42kg.

In third place was Gary plant who shed the pole with magggots from peg 3 and weighed 15.98kg. Rods N Reels

The following day for whatever reason only 4 hardy anglers turned up. It is true that mainly down to old age upon arrival at these matches instead of discussions regarding shing tactics its usually a case of doctors or hospital appointments and who has been struck down with an illness and what medication has been changed.

However Lenny Bolton keeps taking the tablets and can still perform, on the bank that is. He continued his good form and shed the pole

from peg 7 with maggots. He caught several decent carp and weighed 21.92kg.

In second place was Barry Homer from peg 5 with 17.66kg caught using similar tactics.

In third place was Terry Brindley who shed paste from peg 3 for 10.38kg and I may as well mention the jackie last wagon , Alan Priest on peg 1 with 8.68kg. Alan is a shining examle of the Spanish health system and in fact attends the sta Christmas party at Quiron Hospital as he is in there that often. He made a much welcome return to his beloved shing after a recent stay in the said establishment and it was good to see him.
