Police arrest two men in failed Torrevieja kidnapping

The Civil Guard has arrested two men, aged 34 and 36, accused of kidnapping and extortion in Torrevieja. The detainees were placed at the disposal

of the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Torrevieja, which ordered the imprisonment of both detainees without bail.

The attempt was made over a failed drug transfer, where

the victim had to get rid of two bags of drugs in France.

The Civil Guard received a phone call reporting a possible kidnapping in progress. The caller, the victim’s sibling, who was following the kidnappers, who were traveling in a car towards Guardamar del Segura. Several units were mobilised at that time and members of the main post of the Guardia Civil in Guardamar del Segura intercepted the suspected vehicle in La Mata.

Inside the car, the o cers found two men in the front, both with previous convictions for crimes against persons, property and public health. The victim was in the back of the vehicle and told o cers he was being held against his will and claimed that his mobile phone had been taken. This was recovered from the glove compartment of the car.

The alleged kidnappers were arrested on the spot for false imprisonment and extortion, and the vehicle involved along with the victim’s mobile phone were

seized as evidence.

Motive

The Civil Guard, which has only just reported the incident, two weeks after the event occurred, explained that during the victim’s statement at the Civil Guard headquarters in Guardamar del Segura, it was revealed that the motive for the kidnapping and the death threats was a led drug transfer.

The alleged kidnappers accused the victim of having lost two bags of drugs in France and demanded 15,000 euros and a midrange vehicle belonging to

the victim as compensation for their loss.

While the arrests were made by the Main Police Station in Guardamar del Segura with the support of the Main Police Station in Torrevieja and the Local Police of Guardamar del Segura, the investigations were carried out by the Territorial Team of the Judicial Police of Guardamar del Segura.

Local school investigated over illegal school bus

The Civil Guard has reported a school that was transporting children by bus without authorisation. The school charged between 40 and 50 euros per child for the collection and transport service, without having the mandatory civil liability insurance required for this service.

The investigation was initiated by the Guardia Civil when it detected several violations related to this vehicle, some of them very serious, so it was transferred to the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Territory to initiate a case file.

The Transport team of the Torrevieja Civil Guard Detachment found the school bus on the CV-920 road, near the municipality of Rojales. During this service, the agents spotted a mixed vehicle with the signs of a

nursery school in the region.

After identifying the driver of the vehicle and carrying out an inspection, they found that, although the vehicle had only nine seats, it was occupied by 12 minors, in addition to the driver. Most of the minors were not using seat belts or the mandatory child restraint systems, and four of them were in fact standing in the vehicle.

The officers investigated the origin of the vehicle and discovered that the minors were collected daily from a nursery and primary school in the area to be taken to and from their homes. In addition, it was found that the nursery charged between 40 and 50 euros per child to each family for the collection and transport service.

Violations

The officers observed several very serious violations and failures to comply with the Land Transport Regulations (ROTT): for carrying out regular transport of schoolchildren without a permit and for carrying out public transport of passengers for special school use without specific authorisation.

They also noted that the vehicle lacked approval in the technical data sheet regarding the requirements demanded for the transport of minors, such as not having each minor their own seat, failing to comply with the obligation to subscribe to the required insurance, lacking distinctive signage indicating the transport of minors, as well as using the seat next to the driver for a minor under 12 years of age.

Street Cleaning reinforced in Orihuela Costa

The Councillor for Street Cleaning and MSW, Rocío Ortuño, has announced improvements in the service that is being carried out this summer on the Orihuela coast, given the arrival of residents and tourists who considerably multiply the population, and therefore the waste generated. The service has been reinforced through additional equipment and human resources.

Councillor Ortuño explained that in terms of the maintenance and cleaning of the beaches, the Department of Road Cleaning and MSW has a specially modified tractor to clean and prepare the beaches each day. In addition, it has a contract for the removal of Posidonia Oceánica, the large swathes of seaweed that wash up on local beaches, and its transportation to a specialist

facility.

Away from the beach an ‘octopus truck’ is also available to carry out tasks to support the collection of garden prunings, while a contract has also been signed for the rental and collection of containers for Street Cleaning waste, as well as for the cleaning of beaches and waste from prunings and furniture.”

To reduce rubbish in the streets, 50 side-loading containers have been rented exclusively for Orihuela Costa, to provide better coverage for waste disposal by the public and collection by the municipal service.

Human resources have also been increased, there are currently 92 workers assigned to the coast, to which another 29 will be added across the summer.

“This represents a total of 121 workers, that is, we will have more

workers than ever in Orihuela Costa,” Rocío Ortuño explained.

All of these actions represent an expense of more than 700,000 euros, however this is without the added investment planned for the acquisition of new machinery such as collection trucks, containers, sweepers and tooling material to continue improving the service and conditions for workers.

The Orihuela City Council is expected to launch the Environmental and Administrative Unit (UMAD), with the purpose of monitoring hot spots where different types of waste such as prunings, debris, household goods are regularly dumped. This is done with the aim of preventing waste from lying in the streets and being removed from where it does not belong thanks to the surveillance of the Orihuela Local Police.

Barcelona tourists sprayed with water pistols

Around 3,000 protesters marched through Barcelona to denounce mass tourism and its impact on Spain’s most visited city, with some frustrated locals even spraying water on tourists in nearby restaurants.

Under the slogan “Enough! Let’s put limits on tourism,” approximately 2,800 people, according to police estimates, marched along Barcelona’s waterfront district. The demonstrators called for a new economic model to reduce the in ux of millions of tourists visiting each year. Holding banners with messages like “Reduce tourism now!”, the protesters chanted slogans such as “Tourists out of our neighbourhood” and paused in front of hotels, surprising visitors.

A small number of protesters using water pistols to spray tourists and directing angry chants at them. This forced some tourists to leave the bars and restaurants on Barcelona’s famous La Rambla boulevard. Protesters also cordoned o several restaurants frequented by holidaymakers with striped crime scene tape.

The rising cost of housing in Barcelona, which has surged 68% over the past decade according to local authorities, is a major issue for the movement. Additionally, the e ects of tourism on local commerce and working conditions in the city of

1.6 million residents are signi cant concerns.

Barcelona, home to internationally famous sites such as La Sagrada Familia, received over 12 million tourists last year, according to local authorities. In response to the “negative e ects of mass tourism,” the city council, led by socialist mayor Jaume Collboni, announced 10 days ago a ban on tourist apartment rentals by 2028. The city currently has more than 10,000 such rentals. This measure aims to return these properties to the local housing market but could lead to a legal battle, as it is opposed by an association of tourist apartments that argues it will only fuel the black market.

The Barcelona protests follow similar demonstrations in other Spanish tourist hotspots, including Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, and the Canary Islands.

Spain, the second most visited country after France, welcomed 85 million foreign visitors in 2023, an increase of 18.7% from the previous year, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The most visited region was Catalonia, which includes Barcelona, with 18 million visitors, followed by the Balearic Islands with 14.4 million and the Canary Islands with 13.9 million.

Boat with 11 immigrants arrives in Torrevieja

In the early hours of Friday morning (12 July), 11 people arrived on a boat along the coast of Torrevieja.

The occupants, all men, have been transferred to the port of Alicante to receive humanitarian assistance from the Red Cross as is the usual procedure with immigrant crossings.

The Red Cross activated the

Immediate Response Teams for Humanitarian Aid Emergencies for Immigrants Arriving by Coast (ERIE AHIC) and in the rst social and health assessment they reported that the travellers are in good health.

The Immediate Response Team for Humanitarian Assistance to Immigrants specialises in providing the human and material resources to o er irregular immigrants basic medical care and food when they reach the Spanish coast by boat.

Each ERIE AHI is made up of a team leader, a logistician, a doctor and a nurse, as well as around twenty rescuers, Medical Transport Assistants and volunteers in general.

Tapas Route sees record participation with 25 establishments and 44 tapas

The official presentation of the tapas that will be part of the tenth Orihuela Tapa Route, which will take place during the month of September, has been held. This gastronomic event has become a major tourist draw in the municipality and will have the participation of 25 local establishments, offering a total of 44 different tapas: 22 savoury tapas, 12 sweet tapas and 10 cocktails/ Gin-Tonics.

The Councillor for Tourism, Gonzalo Montoya, expressed his satisfaction with the growing participation of restaurants.

“This year we are very happy because a greater number of restaurants have participated than the previous year,” declared Montoya. “Every year we are

increasing restaurants, mainly in the urban case of Orihuela, but also on the coast and districts,” he added.

The 2023 edition saw 20 establishments participating, presenting a total of 30 tapas: 14 savoury, 9 sweet and 7 cocktails/Gin-Tonics. This year’s increase emphasises the interest and commitment of the local gastronomic sector with this event.

The councillor also highlighted the economic importance of the Tapa Route for the municipality: “We are a tourist, hospitality, and service municipality, and our business fabric plays a very important part. It is an opportunity that we must continue to promote from the City Council.”

The participating bars and establishments are:

Bar Estanco, Bar La Tapa, Casa Pepe, Café Madeira, Café La Luna, Cervecería Bobber, Confitería Nueva Bécquer, Confitería Ruiz, Confitería San Gabriel, Divine Bite, El Divino by Cosafina, El Divino by Davinia Martínez, Gastrobar Haizea, La Bo -tellica de Enmedio, La Pepa, Mesón El Rocío, Mi Barraca, New Harpo, Pizzería Di Mando, Raggu, Restaurante Pico del Águila, Sercotel Palacio Tudemir, Susi Gastro-fusion, The Hot Buffalo and Valentina Café.

The Tourism Councillor thanked all the participating restaurants for their support and contribution to this event that promotes local gastronomy.

Three Brits arrested and 36 guns seized in Spanish raid

Three British nationals have been arrested and 36 firearms seized as part of joint Spanish National Police and National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation.

Armed officers deployed to 36-yearold Anthony Finnigan’s property in Murcia, Spain, on 20 June.

Finnigan is suspected of being part of a British organised crime group, based in the Murcia area, responsible for trafficking class A drugs through Spain to the UK. He emerged from the property accompanied by another British national, Hasan Topal, 35, and a firearm was discharged in the direction of the attending officers.

Warning shots were then fired by the officers and both men were detained without sustaining any injuries.

Two other men were arrested at the property – 33-year-old Brit Ediz Can and Ahmed Mhanni, 32, from Morocco.

During a thorough search of the property, officers discovered 36 viable firearms, primarily Walthers and Heckler & Kochs, and 755 9mm bullets.

All four men were taken to custody and remanded.

Finnigan was further arrested as he is wanted by Merseyside Police in connection to drug supply offences in the UK. Once the Spanish National Police’s enquiries conclude, proceedings to get him back to the UK to face these charges will begin.

Neil Keeping, NCA Regional Manager for

Spain, said: “The NCA’s international network played a key role in support of the Spanish National Police operation that saw four men arrested and dangerous weapons seized.

“These firearms are likely to have been destined for the UK criminal market, so taking them out of circulation marks a huge success.

“Suppressing the availability of illegal firearms in the UK, and preventing their use or acquisition by criminals, is a top priority for the NCA and its law enforcement partners.”

Pamplona bull run draws to a close for another year

The 2024 Running of the Bulls at the Festival de San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain has drawn to a close following a week of excitement and drama. The event kicked-off on 6th July and ended with an emotional candlelit ceremony at midnight on 14th July. As always, each new day of the fiesta brought its own unique adventures.

In the mornings, visitors headed to their Running of the Bulls balcony spots or –for the bold and foolhardy–to the route’s entrance to run.

In the Old Town just a block from the bull run route, the Plaza del Castillo was the main attraction for much of the fiesta with live music, DJs, artists, and all manner of shops and stalls. This is also the home of the famed Cafe Iruna, a favourite among Ernest Hemingway enthusiasts as it featured in his novel, The Sun Also Rises.

Each morning the Giants and Big Heads walked the streets in a leisurely parade, shortly after the bull run.

The evenings bring the Feria del Toro when the de Toros bullfighting stadium filled to capacity and matadors face the bulls from the morning’s run. While controversial for some, this cultural tradition has taken place in Spain since the 8th century. It’s an important part of the Country’s past that showcases the respect between man and beast.

Every morning at 8 a.m., six bulls are set loose from their corral to charge through the narrow streets of the old town towards the bullring. Participants risk their safety by sprinting ahead of the bulls, aiming to stay close, creating an electrifying and perilous

display that has enthralled spectators for decades. Each year there are injuries, and this year was no exception as daredevils were injured under the hooves of bulls during the festivities, with two men taken to hospital with minor injuries. The two men, aged 24 and 29, suffered from wounds to their face during the frantic run through the streets. This followed one participant being gored over the starting weekend, and five more suffering bruising. A 37-year-old man from Beriain near Pamplona where the annual festival takes place every July was the first gore injury of this year’s run.

Worrying weather needs to be addressed

July’s weather in Europe paints a stark contrast: the north endures unseasonably cold temperatures and excessive rainfall, while the south battles severe heat waves and wildfires.

Northern Europe, particularly Belgium, has experienced unprecedented rainfall. June marked Belgium’s ninth consecutive month of above-average rainfall, the worst in 119 years, with mid-June witnessing a month’s worth of rain in just one week, leading to widespread flooding. The region has also seen less sunshine and cooler temperatures, struggling to reach 20°C.

In stark contrast, southern and eastern Europe are sweltering under relentless heat. The EU climate monitor Copernicus reported that June was the hottest globally in its recorded history, marking the 13th consecutive month of record-breaking heat. The North Atlantic sea surface temperatures also reached their highest in over 40 years.

The period from July 2023 to June 2024 has been the warmest on record, with temperatures 0.76°C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.64°C above pre-industrial levels. Popular summer destinations like Spain, Italy, and Greece are facing declining tourist numbers due to the extreme heat, down 10% since 2022, according to the European Travel Commission (ETC).

The ETC found that 76% of Europeans are adjusting their travel habits due to climate change, with 17% avoiding destinations with extreme temperatures, a figure that rises to 32% among those over 55.

Spain has introduced a new map for accurate heat wave predictions to prevent heatrelated illnesses and deaths. Research shows that extreme weather events in Europe increased from 11,442 in 2021 to 16,956 in 2023, including hailstorms, heavy rain, droughts, and even tornadoes. These events are not only destructive to the environment but also to the economy, exemplified by a

hailstorm in Valencia in 2023 causing an estimated €40 million in damages.

The current neutral phase between El Niño and La Niña, known as a ‘cold event’, still sees El Niño effects dominating, resulting in high temperatures in both oceans and air. These phenomena create a ‘domino effect’ where weather changes in one region affect another, leading to increased rainfall in some areas and reduced in others.

Europe, the fastestwarming continent, has been warming at twice the global average since 1991, according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and Copernicus. Both agencies stress the urgent need for Europe to cut emissions and transition away from fossil fuels. Since 2000, 23 of Europe’s 30 most severe heat waves have occurred, with five in the last three years alone.

Experts emphasise that immediate action is crucial to prevent further climaterelated disasters across the continent.

Guardia Civil dismantles violent gang accused of local robberies

The Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal group linked to robberies in shops and homes in Murcia, Valencia and Alicante, which has so far resulted in the arrest of nine people for crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation, illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking, falsification of public documents, theft of use of a motor vehicle and membership of a criminal group.

The suspects are believed to have carried out robberies in the Vega Baja region at a home in Torrevieja and at a jewellery store in Orihuela Costa, attacking their victims with repeated blows to the head with the pistol they were holding. They also carried out robberies in other places in Spain, such as the Cartagena district of La Palma in Murcia or in Bétera in Valencia.

Following the searches, jewellery and watches

valued at 63,000 euros were recovered and four short firearms, a simulated long weapon, ammunition, detonating cartridges, an airsoft gun, a taser gun, mobile phones and a high-end car, among other items, were seized.

In this regard, one individual has been arrested, bringing to nine the number of people arrested so far, allegedly linked to the now dismantled criminal group. They are five women and four men, aged between 18 and 48, who are accused of the alleged crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation, illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking, falsification of public documents, theft of use of a motor vehicle and belonging to a criminal group. The operation is still ongoing.

Gang of ¨Cogoteros¨ arrested by Guardia Civil in Vega Baja

The Civil Guard, within the framework of the operation “ Chimonte ”, has arrested five men, aged between 19 and 47, for crimes of theft, robbery with violence and robbery with force, committed using the method known as “cogotero”. In addition to crimes of fraud, damage, falsification of documents and membership of a criminal group. The detainees have been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction No. 3 of Torrevieja, who has ordered their release with the imposition of precautionary measures.

In August 2023, after receiving a complaint at the San Miguel de Salinas Civil Guard for a robbery with violence using the well-known “cogoteros” method, the agents of the Judicial Police Team of the Civil Guard of Pilar de la Horadada began the “Chimonte” operation to clarify the facts.

The investigators contacted the investigation

areas of the Main Post of the Civil Guard in El Campello and Torrevieja, which had similar operations open, in which the same perpetrators were identified, thus beginning a close collaboration and discovering the existence of an organised criminal group. Initially, they focused on fully identifying and locating the alleged perpetrators, who continually changed addresses, rented vehicles, as well as made use of false or stolen documents.

After carrying out numerous investigations, the agents were able to prove the authorship of five men, aged between 19 and 47, in 22 criminal acts carried out in the provinces of Almería, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, Tarragona and mostly in the Province of Alicante using the “cogoteros” method, having seized more than 122,000 euros. The perpetrators, in an organised manner, located the victim, observed their

movements to select the ideal moment when they were carrying a greater amount of cash and, either by force, violence, or in most cases by distracting the victims by puncturing the tyres of their vehicles, they stole the money, in one case stealing 63,000 euros from one of their victims.

Finally, the investigators proceeded to locate and arrest the perpetrators, two of them in San Miguel de Salinas, one in Orihuela Costa and two others in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia). In addition, they proceeded to search two homes in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia) and another in San Miguel de Salinas. During the searches, 1,584 euros, a drone, 12 sunglasses, clothing and accessories used to conceal their identity, a smoke canister, special tools for breaking vehicle windows and puncturing tires, binoculars, a flashlight, two laptops valued at 2,400 euros and a walkie-talkie transmitter were seized.

os ontesinos ill ho e the first io waste treatment plant in the Vega Baja

The Los Montesinos Town Council has approved by majority the transfer of land to the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium for the construction of the rst organic matter treatment facility, also called bio-waste treatment, which has an investment of almost 4.5 million euros. It will thus be the rst organic matter treatment plant that Vega Baja will have to treat its waste without having to leave the region.

The president of the Consortium, Francisco Cano, has thanked the Mayor of Los Montesinos, José Manuel Butrón, on behalf of the entity, for his e orts and involvement.

The future biowaste plant will be located on a plot of land in the Los Montesinos industrial estate, far from the town centre and residential areas. At this facility, organic waste (from the organic waste container) will be transformed into compost, an organic and ecological fertiliser that improves the quality of agricultural soils.

The facility will have

the capacity to treat approximately 4,408 tons of organic waste per year.

The investment in the plant, which is expected to be operational in December 2025, amounts to 4,434,589.50 euros. Of this total investment, the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium has obtained a subsidy of 1,356,245.80 euros from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for the construction of facilities for the speci c treatment of separately collected biowaste.

The biowaste plant is not the only facility of the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium that will be located in Los Montesinos. Last February, Los Montesinos also approved the transfer of land in the same industrial estate for the construction of a permanent ecopark. This facility, which will serve more than 4,900 citizens, will allow the population to deposit the most voluminous and polluting household waste, such as furniture or electronic devices.

Equality will install information points against sexual assault during the Reconquista celebrations

The Councillor for Equality, Agustina Rodríguez, has presented the awareness campaign organised by the council to set up information spaces against sexual assault during the festivities.

Rodríguez recalled that the Orihuela City Council is committed to events and environments free of sexual violence, therefore, “raising awareness among citizens against sexist aggression, against those behaviours that especially attack the integrity and independence of women, is the main reason why the Equality Department is carrying out the installation of two information spaces, each one led by two professionals in the field (psychologists, sexologists, promoters and equality agents), which will be located in the Glorieta Gabriel Miró and in the Parque Severo Ochoa, on July 18, 19 and 20 from 11:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.”, indicated the Orihuela councillor.

These reference spaces for active listening and for recording incidents have the following objectives: to achieve festivities free of sexism and sexist aggression, to raise awareness among the population about sexist

behaviour at local festivities, to provide victims with support and information about existing resources and to provide assistance and support to victims of sexual assault.

“It is about offering women safe places, places of information, reception, advice and awareness. So that every woman in a vulnerable situation or who feels like a victim of sexist action can be given a response, where she can go to seek help in the event of feeling harassed, uncomfortable, threatened or attacked,” said Agustina Rodríguez.

In addition to all this, an awareness campaign will be carried out with posters, adaptation of the campaign to social networks, various

materials and merchandising.

“The purpose of this campaign is to put the focus on the reality of sexual violence, calling on the whole of society to eradicate it. Therefore, it is not only about offering support in a critical situation, but also about raising awareness and bringing about cultural and social change,” as the Equality Councillor has assured.

In short, anyone who has suffered or witnessed an assault must turn to this information space where trained professionals will provide them with everything they need: information on how to act, referral to specialized services, notification to the Security Forces and Corps, among others.

Last week, Labour secured a decisive victory in the UK general election, winning 412 out of 650 seats. The Conservatives won 121 seats, and the Liberal Democrats secured 72. This result marks the worst defeat in the Conservative Party’s parliamentary history. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has accepted responsibility for the defeat, acknowledging the nation’s anger.

Keir Starmer, the new Prime Minister, will start his tenure by visiting all four nations of the United Kingdom. He aims to dismantle the previous government’s controversial Rwanda Scheme and the new Labour government is expected to prioritise improving the UK’s relationship with the EU, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy advocating for a “wide-ranging security pact.”

Elsewhere in the newly formed cabinet, Labour’s Defence Secretary, John Healey, has already travelled to Ukraine, pledging new military supplies and rea rming commitments made by Sunak in April. Health Secretary Wes Streeting plans to meet with junior doctors to address long-standing industrial action and with the British Dental Association to discuss ful lling Labour’s promise of 700,000 urgent appointments.

According to the GDP growth data released this morning, the UK economy grew more than expected in May. The O ce of National Statistics reported 0.4% growth, signi cantly more than the 0.2% expected and after showing no growth in April.

The services sector, has been a consistent driver of growth, maintaining its position above the key 50 level since November last year. This, coupled with a rebound in house building, has contributed signi cantly to the more positive gure. With growth being the new Labour government’s “national mission”, this will be welcome news among ministers and could reassure investors and analysts about the stability of the UK economy.

Following the news, the pound increased in value against both the dollar and the euro this morning. However, expectations of an August rate cut have dropped to 52.7% from 67.5% at the beginning of the

GBP / EUR UPDATE

week.

This could mean the outcome of the next Bank of England rate meeting, scheduled for Thursday 1st August, is still e ectively undecided. Key data releases, including the latest CPI in ation data, Retail Sales, and the Manufacturing and Services PMIs, are all due for release before then, and each release could prove pivotal as markets and policymakers look for further insight into the UK economy over the next few weeks.

The pound is up against the dollar today, after it fell against a basket of currencies following the latest CPI In ation data released in the US yesterday afternoon. Price rises fell faster than expected in June to just 3%, below forecasts of 3.1% and May’s reading of 3.3%.

EUR The French elections on Sunday resulted in a political deadlock, with no group winning a majority.

The New Popular Front (NPF) unexpectedly took the top spot with 182 seats, while Marine Le Pen’s National Rally won 143 out of a total of 577 seats. The parties need a coalition of 289 seats to form a majority, with the most likely outcome at the time of writing being an alliance between left and centrist parties. Whatever happens, the outcome will be challenging with a fragmented parliament and the political landscape in France remains uncertain. President Macron must decide who to ask to form a new government, which will then face a con dence vote in the National Assembly, which, if unsuccessful, means the president cannot call another parliamentary election for 12 months. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has o ered his resignation but will remain in a caretaker role until a new government can be formed

The results seemed to only have a minor impact on the euro, the single currencies only dropping by 0.3% Against the dollar and 0.4% against the pound immediately after.

Looking forward to next week’s interest rate decision, the ECB is unlikely to cut rates on Thursday 18th July, although a 76.4% chance of a September cut remains.

Young woman arrested for impersonating someone else in an exam in Orihuela

The National Police in Orihuela have arrested a woman for falsifying a passport to impersonate another person and take an official language exam.

The incident was brought to the attention of the officers after receiving a call via 091 informing them that a person was taking an exam to obtain a qualification in English at a language school with possibly false documentation.

A police team went to the scene and met with the person in charge of the academy, who said that this place carried out official Cambridge exam tests and that they used a facial recognition program to prevent fraud. Therefore, while the C1 level tests were being carried out, she received a call from a Cambridge supervisor telling her that there was a student that the program had recognized as having already appeared on several occasions at different centers with different identities. She also told the officers that they

had already been warned previously that people of oriental origin were taking official exams using different identities.

Following these statements, the officers asked the woman for her identification to verify her identity and she provided a Chinese passport. After initial checks with police databases, there was no record of her.

Continuing with the investigations to determine the woman’s identity, the officers took her to the police station to identify her and verify that her documentation was correct.

Once at the police station, the officers contacted the National Police’s specialized unit

for document forgery, who confirmed that the passport carried by the Chinese citizen was false. In addition, after a search of her belongings, they found a United Arab Emirates identity card in the name of another person with a photograph of her.

For these reasons, after the agents had sufficient evidence to determine that the documents she was carrying contained several false indications, she was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of document falsification.

The detainee, a 19-yearold Chinese national, was placed at the disposal of the Orihuela Court of Instruction on duty.

Avilés, and Gran Canaria, and will conclude in Nigrán and Torrevieja on August 3 and 4.

Eduardo Dolón, the Mayor of Torrevieja, expressed his satisfaction with the festival’s return to the city for a second edition, highlighting its

significant economic and social impact. He emphasized the festival’s national and international recognition as a premier platform for top urban music artists, attracting a diverse audience of young people, adults, and families.

The RBF directors emphasized the festival’s commitment to being a daytime event, respecting the sleep of residents while aligning with local customs. The festival runs from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., allowing attendees to enjoy the city’s beaches, natural

parks, and diverse culinary offerings. A study last year revealed that the festival’s direct economic impact on the region exceeded 6 million euros, benefiting agencies, hotels, shops, restaurants, and other businesses in Torrevieja. The festival also features an innovative activity area with various attractions, play areas, and water activities. The venue includes artificial grass and drinking fountains with free access. New services this year include improved bars, an accessible area for disabled individuals with good views, and a large renovated food space offering a wide selection of global flavors, including vegan and gluten-free options.

Additionally, this edition will showcase a massive stage measuring 45 x 22 meters, an integrated DJ booth, and over 400 square meters of 8K screens. Investments have been made in cutting-edge technology, AI, security, and access to enhance the fan experience.

The winning photographers will receive certi cates and scholarships: 100 euros for third place, 150 euros for second place, and 250 euros for rst place.

A new feature of this year’s competition is the digital submission process, making it easier for participants to

In conjunction with the festivities, the Comparsa Caballeros del Rey Fernando is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking its founding in 1974. Throughout July, the exhibition hall on the rst oor of Casa del Festero Domingo Espinosa Albertus will showcase a journey through ve decades of history. The exhibition includes various belongings, weapons, documents, and costumes of di erent

The exhibition also features numerous references to the Hermitage of the Holy Sepulchre, which is now municipally owned but once served as the headquarters for this festive group. Documents provided by members, such as Rosa María Ruiz Murcia, display letters and correspondence related to the acquisition of the Sepulchre from the Franciscans and the subsequent sale of this space to the council for its restoration.

Spanish Data Protection Agency Targets OnlyFans and Pornhub

A social network with an algorithm that selects only the topics that generate “maximum engagement” by the user and downloads that user data to locate their circle of friends and family... a video game that makes the player feel guilty for not accepting gamers... a platform that suggests endless content and an application in which messages expire... These are just some examples of how “designers analyse user data (behavior, preference, habitual use or location, for example) to obtain the desired results in all cases.” That’s what it says in the report ‘Addictive patterns in the processing of personal data. Implications for data protection,’ presented this Wednesday by Mar España, director of Spain’s AEPD data protection agency. The aim of all these tricks of the

trade is the same: to get people of all ages addicted, leading them to engage in speci c behaviors with misleading practices.

This report is one more step in the “need to regulate certain guidelines” as far as the AEPD is concerned. “The rst ones to take responsibility are the internet companies, but governments must impose policies to stop them,” said Mar España, who calls for a “state-wide pact” to stop these practices that seek to “monetize” their content with advertising. The development of these age veri cation technologies, which also serve as a rewall against deceptive practices, is urgently needed because “the systems currently available on the market (selfdeclaration, sharing credentials with the content provider, having

the content provider make an age estimate or having an intermediary entity between the user and the provider) have proven ine cient or very intrusive,” explained an AEDP source.

After the summer, the state-run agency will push in the European Parliament for better compliance with the key principles already set in stone for age veri cation systems. AEPD will also call for sanctions against two of the most popular porn platforms in Spain, Pornhub and OnlyFans. “These companies should not use what they call ‘trusted third parties’ when it comes to age veri cation. The best way to be sure is the double-blind system for data veri cation,” said AEPD’s director.

The issue is that “with the excuse of verifying age, data is collected

on a massive scale,” says España. “We have disseminated these criteria for implementation in the European Data Protection Committee and in Latin America.”

The system proposed by the AEPD would consist of a “double-blind system that authorizes a device” owned by an adult to access certain content without “knowing the purpose of the access. It is an o cial document that is issued with a driver’s license, passport, ID card or, in the future, the European digital identity system. It should be anonymous and e ective.”

The idea would be to extend the initiative to social media, video-streaming platforms, music, adult content and games, learning environments, and health apps—all guilty, in the AEPD’s view, of using code that intentionally generates

addiction and coerces through deception. Not even Google’s educational platform is spared.

“We have never been more exposed to having our very beings manipulated for decisionmaking,” warned España. “There are dark designs afoot and the digital tech companies are aware of the addictive and misleading e ects they produce. They are also aware of the e ects on behavior to in uence and make decisions that are neither autonomous nor informed about any negative consequences. The e ects of such inappropriate use are already being experienced.”

Here is an extract from the AEPD’s course on these issues, ‘New challenges for the protection of people’s rights in the face of the impact of the Internet’.

“What is a PUK code and an IMEI number concerning a mobile phone”?

Both are terms associated with a mobile telephone. Ideally, you need to record these somewhere away from your phone.

The PUK (Personal Unblocking

Key) code is a code consisting of 8 digits. It is used to unblock your SIM card when you enter 3 times the wrong PIN code to unlock your SIM. Note that not all SIM cards require a PIN code.

The PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code is designed to prevent unauthorised usage of your phone and keep SIM details safe. The easiest way to get your PUK code is to request it from your mobile phone provider. You may also find the PUK code in your SIM card’s packaging or in your mobile provider’s official app.

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique 15-digit serial number for identifying a device; every mobile phone in the world has one. These IMEI numbers are stored in a database called the EIR (Equipment Identity Register), which contains information about all valid mobile phone equipment. This number can be used to identify a lost or stolen phone.

New facebook scam to watch out for

A new scam on Facebook is spreading rapidly, prompting a warning from the Spanish Consumers’ Association. The scam involves tagging users in a post announcing the death or accident of a person, accompanied by a link designed to obtain personal data. Phrases like “Look who’s dead,” “I can’t believe he’s had an accident,” and “Holy sh*t, he’s died in an accident” are used to lure users into clicking the link. Instead of leading to a news article, the link downloads malware onto the user’s device, giving hackers access to the user’s Facebook login information.

Once the scammers gain access to an account, they use it to spread the scam further by sending similar messages to the user’s friends. The Spanish Consumers’ Association recommends the following steps for those who have fallen victim to this fraud:

1. Verify your account to ensure you are not blocked.

2. If you still have access, change your password immediately to prevent the hacker from logging in again.

3. Report the issue to Facebook.

4. Go to the security settings and log out of any unknown locations or devices.

5. In the general settings, check the email addresses linked to your account and delete any that are unfamiliar.

Health & Beauty

I had my niece come to stay recently, bringing her husband and two children; my great nieces. I’ve always said they are welcome to come and stay with me at my house in Spain; there’s plenty of room. However, once they had been here two days, I was asked to babysit while they went out as a couple. I didn’t mind one evening, but then they wanted me to take the children out to the beach for the day, so that they could relax by the pool, and have the villa to themselves...MY villa! I found this to be quite unacceptable, and told them so in a nice way, but I meant it. I am 73 years old, and not in the best of health, and looking after two young girls by myself is quite a task. I was happy to babysit one evening, but not take the girls for the whole day. Things escalated and my niece argued with me and told me I was being selfish. She said her mother does it all the time, but I reminded her that I am childless, and am not her mother. Things weren’t the same after that, and they went home with a flea in their ear. Did I do the right thing?

I guess they were taking advance of you, and maybe they should have considered that you may not be able to cope in the circumstances. You also tell me that they never contributed to shopping, cost of trips or meals out, and that you footed the bill for all of this; you also tell me that the children ran riot in your home, and terrorized your dog. Not the best house guests, and a warning to others that living with family and friends is not always a good idea; better to have them book their own accommodation otherwise it can spell the end of a beautiful relationship.

Could talc cause cancer?

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers talc to be “probably carcinogenic.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classi es talc at level 2A on its hazard identi cation scale, indicating it may have carcinogenic e ects in the population, particularly suggesting a link to ovarian cancer. This classi cation, the second highest on the scale, is based on laboratory experiments on animals and “strong mechanistic evidence” that support the hypothesis of adverse health e ects.

The WHO agency asserts that talc exhibits “key carcinogenic characteristics in human cells and experimental systems.” Similarly, the IARC has identi ed acrylonitrile, a compound used in the textile and consumer plastics industry, as a carcinogen. They highlight the dangers of exposure to this product during extraction or processing, and warn that the general population might also be at risk through the use of cosmetics or body powders containing talc, such as make-up or deodorants.

A study by IARC experts, to be published in ‘The Lancet Oncology’ next year, points to an increased incidence of ovarian cancer linked to the use of talcum powder in the perineal region. Another less studied risk involves contamination of talc with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Additionally, exposure to talc in foods, medicines, and other products is a concern.

While scienti c evidence is limited, the certainty about talc’s carcino-

genic potential is comparable to that for red meat consumption and the risks of night work. Group 2A classication does not specify the degree of risk of developing tumors from a given exposure. Researchers have also noted an increased rate of ovarian cancer among women working in the pulp and paper industry.

Experiments on rats have shown that talc treatment caused an increased incidence of cancer in the adrenal glands and lungs of female rats, and a combination of benign and malignant tumors in the adrenal medulla of male rats. The IARC scientists argue that talc exhibits key characteristics of carcinogens, such as inducing chronic in ammation and altering cell proliferation, cell death, or nutrient supply.

Deep Cleansing Facial: Increased sweat and oil

production can clog pores. A deep cleansing facial can help to prevent breakouts and keep skin clear.

Exfoliating Facial: Gentle exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and prevent the buildup that can lead

How much coffee should you be drinking?

Co ee is a popular beverage worldwide and a well-known source of ca eine, often chosen for a quick boost of energy. Besides ghting fatigue, co ee has been linked to several health bene ts, including a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic disease, and some cancers. However, too much ca eine can have adverse e ects such as insomnia, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety, and agitation. Individual recommendations for ca eine intake vary, but research provides generalized guidelines for daily consumption.

Ca eine, the most widely consumed psychostimulant in the world, is best known for stimulating the central nervous system, improving vigilance, attention, and reaction time, and supporting athletic endurance and training e orts. An 8-ounce

serving of freshly brewed co ee contains 96 milligrams of caffeine. Research suggests that up to 400 milligrams of ca eine per day is typically safe for most adults, which means that most adults can tolerate 3-4 cups of brewed co ee daily without adverse e ects.

Why are your ankles swolen?

You might not notice your swollen ankles immediately because the interstitial spaces, or the areas between tissues, can accommodate several liters of uid. Swelling in your ankles often becomes visible only when these spaces hold about two to three liters of uid, equivalent to roughly six bottles of water. Swelling can develop quickly due to an acute condition like a blood clot, or gradually if a chronic condition is the cause.

Swelling can a ect one or both ankles, and the skin around them may appear stretched or shiny. Ankle swelling is usually more noticeable in the lower legs due to gravity. The swelling can worsen after prolonged walking, standing, or sitting. Pressing a nger into the swollen area may leave a small indentation, known as pitting edema.

Swollen ankles don’t always cause pain, but you might experience some aching, heaviness, or di culty moving. In severe cases, walking may become increasingly challenging. Assistive devices such as walkers or canes can provide support.

Common Causes of Swollen Ankles

Your lymphatic system manages uid levels in your body. When it cannot properly handle excess uid, often due to an underlying condition, you

may experience edema, leading to swollen ankles. Chronic venous insu ciency is a common cause of this condition. Your treatment plan for swollen ankles will depend on the underlying cause. Your healthcare provider may recommend one or more of the following:

• Reducing salt intake in your diet

• Taking medications like diuretics to reduce excess uid

• Raising your legs above heart level when lying down to drain uid from your legs

• Doing leg exercises to improve circulation

• Standing up and moving around periodically when traveling by plane or train

• Avoiding tight clothing around the thighs to ensure good

circulation

• Wearing compression socks to improve circulation

• Getting a lymphatic massage to increase blood ow

Ways To Prevent Swollen Ankles

There are various methods to reduce the risk of developing swollen ankles, and if you’re already experiencing swelling, these strategies can help lower the risk of complications:

• Eating a diet low in salt

• Maintaining a healthy weight

• Engaging in daily physical activity

•Keeping in regular contact with your healthcare provider to discuss symptoms and receive timely treatment

Elderly Care in Summer: Key Tips to Protect Health

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, the care of the elderly becomes crucial. The e ects of heat on the body can be devastating, especially for those with a lower capacity to adapt, such as the elderly. Experts from Quirónsalud Torrevieja o er professional insights into how heat can a ect our seniors and the best practices to protect their health during the summer season.

The E ects of Heat on the Body

Extreme heat poses a signi cant health threat due to its impact on an individual’s hydration status and haemodynamic situation. According to specialists from the Emergency Department of Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “extreme heat can pose a signi cant health threat due to its e ect on the individual’s hydration status and haemodynamic situation, which can lead to vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and even loss of consciousness and death in extreme cases of heat stroke.”

Vasodilation and reduced blood pressure are physiological responses to heat, but in elderly individuals, these reactions can trigger severe complications. Although the e ects are usually mild and manageable, it is crucial to recognise particularly threatening situations to prevent serious consequences.

Vulnerability of the Elderly to Heat

The elderly are particularly vulnerable to heat due to several factors. A reduced ability to

thermoregulate, diminished sensation of thirst, and consequently lower hydration levels, along with chronic illnesses and the use of multiple medications, increase the risk of heatstroke in older adults.

The reduced capacity for thermoregulation means that the elderly cannot cool their bodies as e ectively as younger individuals. This, combined with a diminished sense of thirst, can lead to rapid and dangerous dehydration. Additionally, chronic illnesses such as neurodegenerative diseases and certain medications, especially those a ecting blood pressure, further increase the risk.

Risk Temperatures

There is no speci c temperature at which the risk increases, but clearly, the higher the temperature, the greater the danger. “It could be said that there is no speci c temperature at which the risk increases, but evidently, the higher the temperature, the greater the risk,” say the specialists.

Diseases Most A ected by Heat

Heat can a ect the progression of any chronic illness, especially if it is severe. “Any chronic condition can be a ected in its progression when exposed to the e ects of heat, especially if it is severe,” note the experts. Beyond the e ect of heat on certain diseases, it is essential to pay attention to how some diseases predispose individuals to reduced

adaptation.

Neurodegenerative diseases and medications with hypotensive or diuretic e ects are particularly concerning. These factors can further hinder the body’s ability to manage thermal stress, increasing the risk of severe complications.

Warning Symptoms

It is crucial to be alert to any changes or general symptoms in the elderly. Extreme signs of heatstroke include hyperthermia, but symptoms such as changes in consciousness, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and headaches should also be monitored.

Tips for Caring for the Elderly in Summer

Caring for the elderly during the summer is not substantially di erent from caring for the general population, but it requires greater rigour in application. Key recommendations include:

- Adequate Hydration: It is essential to maintain a good uid intake, considering that the elderly have a lower sensation of thirst. “It is crucial to have a good uid intake, even more so considering that the elderly have a lower physiological sensation of thirst.”

- Light Meals: Meals should be light to facilitate digestion and avoid overheating the body.

- Avoiding Sun Exposure during Peak Hours**: It is crucial to avoid

sun exposure during peak intensity hours, generally between 12:00 and 17:00.

- Protection from Heat: Using hats and lightweight clothing that covers most of the body can help protect from the heat. “Protecting the head with hats” is a simple yet e ective measure.

- Avoiding Intense Physical Exercise: During the hottest hours of the day, intense physical exercise should be avoided.

- Cool Environments: Keep indoor spaces cool with fans, air conditioning, or by keeping windows and blinds closed during the day.

Caring for the elderly during the summer requires special attention due to their vulnerability to heat. By following the recommendations

of the specialists from Quirónsalud Torrevieja, we can prevent severe complications and ensure our seniors enjoy a safe and healthy summer. The key lies in prevention, adequate hydration, and protection against extreme heat—measures that can make the di erence between a pleasant summer and a medical emergency.

And remember, this summer, if any problems arise, our emergency service will take care of you.

Driving attire for the Summer months

The summer months are key for road travel, and with high temperatures, it is advisable to take extra precautions while driving as roads can be dangerous. The hot weather can alter a driver’s ability to drive, causing fatigue, aggression, tension, nervousness, and vehicle damage.

In addition to driving after a good night’s rest and ensuring proper car maintenance, clothing plays a crucial role in avoiding problems and accidents at the wheel. In the southern regions of Spain, it is more common to drive barefoot or in flip-flops, and on the coast, in swimwear. Generally, drivers are more aware of the correct footwear than clothing when driving in the summer season. The General Road Traffic Regulations (RGC) do not include any prohibition or restriction on the clothing that drivers must wear in the vehicle. However, drivers must take care and may be fined for failing to comply with article 13, which refers to the general rules of driving: “the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision, and permanent attention to driving.”

The DGT does not envisage a ban on any type of clothing. The law does not expressly prohibit driving in swimwear, flip-flops, high heels, or without a shirt, but it does point out that anything an officer considers could hinder or compromise a driver’s ability to drive normally, such as flipflops or barefoot driving, or anything that limits the freedom of movement to operate the pedals, can be considered an action that compromises the safety of the driver and their passengers. Similarly, wearing swimwear could be considered punishable because these clothes do not allow you to adopt the correct position at the wheel due to the discomfort caused by the seat belt or contact with the seats. Driving without a shirt or in a bikini can also be dangerous as the seat belt, which is compulsory, can cause burns, chafing, and skin damage.

The general road traffic regulations state that drivers must at

all times be in a position to control their vehicles or animals. Special care must be taken to maintain the appropriate position and ensure that the rest of the passengers maintain it, as well as the appropriate positioning of the objects or animals being transported so there is no interference between the driver and any of them.

Breaching these rules will result in a fine of 80 euros, but these will depend on the traffic police officers who have the final word.

A total of 96% of motorists believe they are wearing the right clothing when they drive, but one in four confess they do so in swimwear, according to the findings of a survey conducted by the CEA Foundation, which also concluded that the clothing motorists believe to be appropriate does not coincide with what is advisable.

According to the data collected in the survey among 1,025 people, 26.73% drive in bathing clothes in summer. This type of clothing is not recommended as in the event of an accident, the damage caused will be greater. However, despite the fact that one in fourrespondentssaytheydriveinswimwear, 96% believe they do so with the appropriate clothing. This indicates a lack of knowledge about what is recommended versus what is considered appropriate when driving.

The European Automobile Commission Foundation has detected through the results of its survey that, depending on the area of the country, drivers have different habits when it comes to selecting

appropriate clothing and footwear. In the north of Spain, 28% of those surveyed confess that they occasionally drive in swimwear, while 56% of drivers do so in the south. In the Mediterranean and Levante region, 30% of those questioned have driven in such clothing in summer. Even 26% of motorists in the central region of the country also use swimwear for driving in the summer period. These data show how the influence of culture and weather conditions determine people’s clothing and driving habits. The same is true for footwear, with 7% of respondents in the north saying they have driven in flip-flops or barefoot, while in the south, this figure rises to 13%.

The European Automobile Commission Foundation has asked about the footwear used by motorists when driving. In this case, 86.83% consider they always wear the correct footwear. Only 5.17% of those questioned said they usually driveinflip-flops.Similarly,5.27%ofmotorists responded they drive barefoot. These results show that when motorists are faced with the question of which footwear is advisable, the vast majority know that driving barefoot or wearing flip-flops is dangerous. Driving a vehicle barefoot leads to a loss of pedal feel, and similarly, driving in flip-flops deprives you of maximum freedom of movement and can lead to an accident because you are unable to act correctly in the event of an unforeseen event.

Stability and con dence have been crucial in this journey and in the decision to renew his

contract for two more seasons. It has been a time of re ection, calls from other teams and nally choosing to continue training in his home. Pau will compete next season in Levante C and could do the preseason with the B team if the coaching sta deems it appropriate. In the next few days this renewal agreement will be made o cial for one of the great representatives of women’s football in the Vega Baja.

Mike Tyson receives unexpected rival support for his fight against Jake Paul

The upcoming ght between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has sparked signi cant interest and speculation within the boxing community. Originally scheduled for July 20 but now postponed to November due to Tyson’s health issues, the bout will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite the delay, the anticipation remains high, with notable gures like former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis o ering their insights.

Lennox Lewis, once a erce rival of Tyson, has given a surprising endorsement of the 58-yearold ghter. Speaking to FOX 29 Philadelphia, Lewis expressed con dence in Tyson’s abilities despite his age, emphasizing that Tyson’s experience and tactical prowess could be decisive against Paul’s relative inexperience. Lewis highlighted that Tyson, even at his age, shouldn’t be underestimated and that his extensive knowledge of the sport could give him an edge over Paul.

Re ecting on Tyson’s ghting capabilities, Lewis pointed out that Tyson’s ability to execute quick, powerful combinations

could be particularly dangerous for Paul. He mentioned that if Tyson manages to land a ten-second combination, it could likely result in Paul being dropped to the mat, ending the ght prematurely.

The comments from Lewis are notable given the history between him and Tyson. Their rivalry culminated in a high-pro le 2002 bout where Lewis knocked out Tyson in the eighth round.

Despite their past enmity, Lewis’s respect for Tyson’s skills and preparation is evident, suggesting that Tyson still possesses the tools needed to succeed in the ring.

As the boxing world eagerly awaits this match, the predictions and endorsements from seasoned professionals like Lennox Lewis add an extra layer of intrigue and excitement to what promises to be a captivating event.
