The Guardia Civil has arrested a woman accused of defrauding more than 50,000 euros from the bank account of a 91-year-old British man she was caring for. The victim became suspicious after he received noti cations of non-payments, when he had su cient savings to cover any expenses.
After realising that his account was overdrawn and that bills were being unpaid and having to ask his son for money to cover daily expenses, the victim contacted the Civil Guard. He reported the issue and asked them to nd out what had
happened, as his bank account had savings of around 50,000 euros.
O cers from the Almoradí Main Post began an investigation to clarify the facts. During the study of the documentation collected, o cers identi ed a large number of unusual payments and bank withdrawals,
As the investigation progressed, the o cers focused on the elderly man’s last caregiver, who for a year-and-ahalf went to his home in Rojales to help him with his personal care and housework. They found that during that time the accused had been using the man’s bank card to pay in numerous shops, leisure establishments and gaming halls, taking advantage of the age and situation of the victim.
The suspect was located in the town of Formentera del Segura, when she was trying to sell a property she owned and was
arrested by the Civil Guard as the alleged perpetrator of the crime of fraud to the value of 53,753 euros.
The woman is 64 years old and of Spanish nationality and already has a criminal record. She has been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction number 4 of Torrevieja, which has ordered her release on bail until a nal sentence is handed down.
Guardia Civil arrest man in Orihuela Costa with 27kg of marijuana
The Civil Guard of Alicante has arrested a man in Orihuela Costa who was identi ed at a checkpoint while transporting in his vehicle 27 kilograms of marijuana buds and 210 grams of hashish. The drugs were packed in large bags that took up the entire passenger compartment of the car.
At around 7pm on 3rd July, when the Citizen Security Unit of the Command (USECIC) based in Torrevieja was carrying out a vehicle and person identi cation operation on the Villamartín road in Orihuela Costa, they stopped the driver of a car whose attitude aroused suspicion among the o cers. After requesting his personal documentation, the o cers decided to search the vehicle he was travelling in.
Between the rear seats of the vehicle and in the boot, so occupying almost the entire passenger space, the Guardia Civil o cers found six large rubbish bags, inside which marijuana buds were being transported, weighing 27 kilograms. They also located 210 grams of hashish, 430 euros in bills of various denominations and several mobile phones.
A 24-year-old man of Moroccan nationality, resident in Murcia, was arrested and charged with a crime against public health for drug tra cking. After being transferred to the Civil Guard Headquarters in Pilar de la Horadada for the instruction of proceedings, he has been placed at the disposal of the Examining Magistrate’s Court number 2 of Orihuela, which has ordered his release on bail until the nal trial.
Brit one of ten arrested for local cyber fraud
National Police o cers have arrested ten people, members of a criminal group allegedly responsible for the commission of multiple scams committed throughout Spain, who fraudulently modi ed the ID cards of their victims to take out contracts with bank card companies.
Four of those arrested are members of the network and another six worked as “mules.”
The gang leaders arrested were four men aged between 20 and 46, of British and Norwegian nationality, the Brit living in Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa. All were placed at the disposal of the Orihuela Court of Instruction on duty.
The investigation began after learning of several payments received that were fraudulently made and investigators from the Judicial Police department of the National Police observed the same pattern.
The o cers came to the conclusion that behind the commission of these crimes there was a criminal network dedicated to the practice of committing cyberattacks, that facilitated the commission of di erent types of fraud.
The rst objective of the gang was to obtain images of original ID cards to modify them, using computer techniques and
superimposing the photograph of another person in place of the real photograph of the holder of the altered ID card. They then began to operate with the falsi ed ID, carrying out various types of fraud that ranged from signing up for telephone line contracts to formalising credit card contracts.
The gang was organised in a hierarchical and tiered structure. One of the arrested men directed all operations and decided which type of fraud to carry out with each document at any given time. Another was a “ xer” who focused his actions on recruiting potential nancial “mules”, obtaining telephone cards or documentation with which he could impersonate his victims.
The o ces found among the seized documentation instructions for obtaining documentation through deception, as well as lists of names of people associated with their documentation and bank account with express indications of the balance.
Another gang member was in charge of recruiting people who would lend their image to be used in false documentation, creating accounts or telephone lines, always using the identity of other people. For this role, predominantly Irish girls were sought, who in exchange received nancial compensation.
Hundreds join Alicante demonstration against mass tourism
More than 700 people took to the streets of Alicante recently to protest against the impact of mass tourism on property prices and local communities. Organised by the neighbourhood group Donde Vas (Where Are You Going?), the demonstrators marched through the city centre, chanting slogans like “Alicante is not for sale” and “housing is a right and tourism a privilege.”
The protest culminated at the Casino del Puerto, where a manifesto was read, condemning the transformation of Alicante into a “theme park.” The manifesto argued that while the city appears to thrive on tourism, it is actually being exploited by it, stressing that Alicante has reached its limit.
The statement highlighted the escalating difficulty for locals to find affordable
housing, exacerbated by job insecurity in the tourism sector characterized by low wages, temporary contracts, and poor working conditions, particularly affecting women and migrants.
Donde Vas warned against a “tourist monoculture” model, predicting an unsustainable future and worsening environmental crises that benefit only a business elite. The group expressed feeling invisible to institutions that prioritize tourism’s economic interests over residents’ needs.
The manifesto concluded with a call for introspection:
“We cannot allow Alicante to become a city devoid of residents, families, and neighborhoods, where the right to our city is sacrificed for economic gain. It’s time to pause and reflect on where we’re going and how we want to share our urban space.”
Local British lady falls to her death at Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre
Local resident Hillary Phillips lost her life last Friday after she fell 3 metres due to a missing fence panel bordering the Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre.
The accident occurred on Friday at 12.30 pm, when she fell from a height of 3 metres, according to sources from the Local Police, who went to the scene. The patrol called an ambulance, whose medical team attended to her for more than 45 minutes, managing to stabilise her
and transfer her to the University Hospital of Torrevieja, where she was urgently admitted to the operating theatre with serious injuries to her head and neck.
However, a few hours later she died from her injuries.
Hillary was out with her longtime friend Priscilla Cromie, who is a senior member of the local PIOC Political Party. Priscilla said her friend had stumbled and fell through the gap where the fence
should have been protecting people from the sheer drop down to the service road. The accident happened on the road that leads from the Help at Home charity shop towards Salgado Dentist.
Hillary has lived in Parque del Duque, Playa Flamenca for nearly 20 years. Her family attended the funeral which was held at San Pedro last Tuesday. Flowers have been placed on the pavement as a mark of respect.

Orihuela Council demands local AP-7 be free of charge
The Government Team of the Orihuela City Council has expressed its annoyance at what they consider to be a new affront by the Ministry of Transport, headed by Óscar Puente, by continuing to ignore the historic requests of residents and visitors to the Orihuela coast for a toll free AP-7, specifically, the section between Los Montesinos and Villamartín-La Zenia. This demand comes hot on the heels of the resolution by the General Secretary of Land Transport of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, of 10th July, where the operator has been granted leave to offer temporary free travel on the toll route. This has been applied to the AP7, Alicante Ring Road, El Campello-Monforte section, a measure that will apply from 16th July to 15th October.
The Councillor for
Infrastructure, Víctor Valverde, said: “I want to remind Mr. minister that on two previous occasions, proposals have been made for the AP-7 to be free of charge and he continues to turn a deaf ear.”
This stretch of highway, with an approximate ADI of 6,000 vehicles per day with 7.5% heavy traffic, is an infrastructure that is underused due to the expensive toll in high season and for a route of just 7km exceeds 9 euros. Meanwhile, once you have passed the Villamartín toll, this section of the AP-7 has an ADI of 21,000 vehicles, being the most used route to move along that stretch of the coast.
The N-332, Valverde points out, in the section from the beaches of Orihuela to just past Torrevieja, “is quite congested throughout the year, causing traffic jams of
Euribor falls to annual low and anticipates new mortgage cuts
The impact of the European Central Bank’s interest rate cut is being felt in the Euribor. The indicator used by most variable mortgages in Spain fell recently to 3.503%, its annual low, slightly below the 3.505% of 1 February, and the lowest level since 27 March 2023. The reduction also contributes to softening the monthly average, now at 3.570%.
If the trend continues, it would be the best monthly figure since February 2023. And more importantly, it would be a significant relief for those who have debts linked to the evolution of the Euribor.
On an average mortgage (140,451 euros to be paid in 23 years, according to INE data for 2023) with a differential of one point, it would mean a saving of 61.6 euros per month or 739.2 euros per year. In July 2023 the average was much higher, at 4.149%, and this difference now favours
those with mortgages, who have been severely punished in the last two years.
The indicator has been below 4% for seven months. July will be the eighth, and the fourth consecutive, in which 12-month mortgage holders will see their payments reduced. The change of direction in the ECB’s monetary policy, although still incipient and without a clear calendar after the rate cut in June - the market expects the next one to be in September - opens the door for the Euribor to continue its de-escalation, but there is no unanimity on how far it will retreat.
In its latest forecasts, Bankinter’s analysis team estimated that the Euribor will end the year at 3.5%, falling to 3% in 2025 and rising to 3.25% in 2026. Others predict sharper falls: the Funcas Panel - which brings together the forecasts of 20 analysis services - expects it to end
2024 at 3.3% and the Association of Financial Users (Asufin) at 3%.
The pace of the falls will depend on the evolution of inflation. In June, prices stood at 2.5% in the euro zone, one tenth lower than in May, but still above the ECB’s 2% target.
The reduction in the Euribor has had other side effects. Among them, it has made variable and mixed mortgages more attractive again: in April they represented 48.1% of the total, their highest level since January 2021, according to the National Institute of Statistics.
Taxpayers who earn over
€601,000 up by 25% in Spain
several kilometres in the summer and suffering an IMD of more than 40,000 vehicles. The CV95 suffers these same delays in the last section arriving at Torrevieja, which could be avoided by removing the toll from the AP-7.”
The mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, considers that once again the Vega Baja is forgotten and marginalised by the Pedro Sánchez government, harming the interests not only of the residents but also of those who visit.
“In the next few days, I will contact the mayors of Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja to make a joint response to this new relief for the residents of the region. We request that the same measure be adopted for this toll section of the AP-7 at least in high season since it affects a large part of our municipal area and those of Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada.”
Spain has more highearning taxpayers than ever. In 2022, thanks to the positive evolution of corporate profits, a good showing by the economy and strong employment figures, the amount of people with an annual declared income of more than €601,000 grew by 25% compared to the previous year, reaching 15,186 individuals. It is, by far, the largest amount of very high earners in the Tax Agency’s annual analysis of personal income tax, updated recently. It is also the group of taxpayers that proportionally grew by more members than any other group.
The previous record of very high earners was set in 2021 with 12,178 citizens in this select club; the 2021 figure in turn was only slightly above the one for 2019, before the health and economic crisis of 2020. The data published involves 2022 figures, as these are released with a twoyear delay, based on tax
filings from last year.
The latest available numbers show that the country’s highest earners are the group that, proportionally, welcomed the most members.
The statistics collect information from work income, but also from other sources such as investments, economic activities and real estate returns. Based on all that data, the Tax Agency groups all taxpayers into 10 income brackets, depending on their taxable income.
The bracket of those who earn more than €601,000 is, by far, the one that grew the most, with 24.7% more individuals, well above the next bracket (€150,000 to €601,000), whose members grew by 17.2%, and the group of €60,000 to €150,000, whose members grew by 14.5%. The number of low and mid-range earners is growing at slower rates, while the lowest earners are losing representation: there are fewer people
than a year before in the lowest bracket.
The total number of individuals who filed taxes was close to 22.9 million, an increase of 3.8% from the previous year, and despite the historical growth of the high-earner bracket, this group of super-rich individuals accounted for only 0.07% of all taxpayers.
The composition of income has a huge influence on the success of the wealthiest profiles. Unlike low and medium earners, who essentially tend to live off their work, the richest complement these returns with income from capital and savings, composed mainly of shares, dividends, interest and other types of capital gains that are generally tied to the market and stock market performance. By territory, the majority of high-earning taxpayers are based in the Madrid region, followed by Catalonia and the Valencia region.
C.L.A.R.O. withdraws support for PP government Orihuela
In the light of recent developments in the team of pedaneos (local representatives of the mayor), C.L.A.R.O President Antonio Cerdan has presented his resignation as Coordinator of Pedaneos of the coast as well as his responsibilities as pedaneo of Playa Flamenca. As such C.L.A.R.O. has withdrawn its support of the Popular Party in Orihuela.
The party believes that the mayor, has failed to meet the preelectoral pact which he entered into in March 2023 in return for C.L.A.R.O’ support in the municipal elections. In this agreement, Pepe Vegara, promised he would offer the posts of two paid Asesores (Assistants) to C.L.A.R.O. In the municipal elections the candidate of the PP for the post of Councillor for the Coast was not elected and the coalition partner of the PP, Vox, claimed
the post of Councillor for the Coast. C.L.A.R.O accepted that in these circumstances it was no longer possible to grant two posts of Asesor to C.L.A.R.O. and to overcome the problem the mayor formally agreed that when naming Pedaneos for the coast the position of Coordinator of Pedaneos (unpaid), with responsibilities, would go to the President of C.L.A.R.O.
The second cause of the rupture was the conduct of the PP Asesor from Campoamor who questioned the need for a Coordinator and obstructed and undermined the work of Antonio Cerdan during several months.
This accumulation of causes, unthinkable in the case of pedaneos elsewhere in the municipality, led to a climate of mistrust in the team on the coast. At the beginning of June Antonio met with the Mayor to acquaint him with the situation which the pedaneos
of the coast were experiencing, providing him with suggestions which could resolve the unfortunate situation, some of which he seemed to approve, and urging him to respect the agreement we entered into a year ago. C.L.A.R.O. awaited his reply, but after a month and a half, there has been no reply.
The above has caused C.L.A.R.O. to begin to doubt the sincerity of the promises the Mayor made to the coast. Until now the party believed that the Mayor headed a new Popular Party in which the residents of the coast could trust. But in light of this experience and especially the Mayor’s failure to respect the formal agreement and his complicity in the divisions created within the team of pedaneos of the coast and the obstruction of their work, C.L.A.R.O. has decided to withdraw its support for the governing party.
Fire in an abandoned mechanical workshop in Orihuela
Last Friday, at 12:01, the Provincial Fire Department of Alicante received a call about a fire inside an abandoned mechanic’s workshop, located on Calle San Juan with Pío V in Orihuela. The fire required a quick and extensive intervention due to the presence of flammable materials and equipment accumulated in the place.
At 12:26 p.m., firefighters had brought the initial situation under control, although the intervention is still ongoing to ensure the complete extinguishment of the fire and prevent possible re-emergence. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in this incident. To combat the fire, a large team has been deployed, consisting of a command unit (UMJ), a heavy urban pump (BUP), a heavy tanker pump (BNP), a heavy
rural pump (BRP), and a heavy forest pump (BFP). In addition, the intervention team includes a sergeant, three corporals and eight firefighters from the fire stations of Orihuela, Almoradí and
the mobile Vega Baja team.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, while crews continue to work to secure the area and prevent further damage.
Firefighters intervene in a fire on a pleasure boat in Torrevieja
The Torrevieja fire brigade intervened on Wednesday in the fire of a pleasure boat moored in the port in Torrevieja. Specifically, the fire broke
out at 11:00 a.m. in a boat moored in the port of the Club Náutico Marina Internacional, El Acequión beach, in Torrevieja. Fortunately, there were no
injuries.
The firefighters used a command unit, a heavy rural pump, a sergeant, a corporal and three firefighters.
Health Minister initiates law banning smoking on bar and restaurant terraces in Spain
The Ministry of Health in Spain is accelerating its efforts to implement legal reforms in the antismoking plan agreed upon with the regions, aiming for approval or significant progress by the end of the year.
In April, the ministry took the initial step of approving a royal decree to implement generic labeling and ban flavorings in cigarettes and vapes. Recently, the ministry introduced a draft bill to extend smokefree public spaces and restrict the sale and consumption of all types of electronic cigarettes among young people, as well as the advertising of these tobaccorelated products. Spanish scientific societies highlight these products as the current gateway for minors to an addiction that kills approximately 60,000 people in Spain annually.
The ministry, led by Mónica García, has opened the draft bill for prior consultation, the first obligatory procedure. This draft aims to reform the law regulating the sale, supply, consumption, and advertising of tobacco for the first time in over a decade. It outlines the content and objectives of the reform and the reasons for its urgency. The public, associations, and NGOs can submit proposals and allegations until August 15, after
which the text will be drafted and sent for approval to the national government.
With this step, the main actions and reforms outlined in the government plan are in the preparation phase. Another major measure, a significant increase in taxes and prices of tobacco and related products, was put on hold in April due to the Ministry of Finance’s veto. However, the Finance Ministry does not rule out agreeing to this measure at some point without prior notice.
The draft bill aims to reduce unwanted public exposure to tobacco smoke, toxins, and related products, such as e-cigarettes and vapes, in public places, particularly community and social settings. Although specific areas for smoking bans or limitations have not yet been detailed, the ministry’s focus includes hospitality terraces, bus and tram shelters, and other community places like beaches. This measure is supported by twothirds of the population and the entire medical profession, noting that thousands of non-smokers in Spain develop serious diseases due to passive smoking, which causes the involuntary intoxication of 1.3 million people globally each year. These individuals frequently inhale harmful fumes
and vapors in bar and restaurant terraces, leisure areas, their own homes, and around schools and workplaces.
The second set of reforms aims to extend legal restrictions on tobacco to electronic cigarettes and, in some aspects, to vapes. The future law will align tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship bans with new forms of smoking. It is expected to equalize restrictions, particularly limiting the promotion of these products by influencers or at youth-oriented events, which have previously operated without restrictions.
Furthermore, the draft envisages applying the same restrictions on the sale and use of tobacco to electronic cigarettes, regardless of nicotine content, and to all types of herbal smoking products. The ministry justifies these legal reforms due to the exhaustion of restrictions put in place nearly 15 years ago, as tobacco consumption has stopped declining in Spain. Additionally, there is increased exposure of young people to new forms of consumption, and current regulations do not address the proliferation and advertising of new tobacco-related products, including nicotine-free e-cigarettes and herbal products.

Butane gas price reduces again in Spain
The price of the standard butane gas canister in Spain has decreased for the second time this year. Previously priced at 16.14 euros, the cost has dropped by 5% to 15.34 euros for July and August, as announced in the O cial State Gazette (BOE).
This price reduction is attributed to several factors: a signi cant 8.8% decrease in raw material costs, a slight 0.1% depreciation of the euro against the dollar over the past two months, and a 14.1% increase in freight costs, as reported by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The pricing of bottled lique ed petroleum gases (LPG), typically butane or propane, in containers ranging from 8 to 20 kg, is
regulated rather than marketdriven. The maximum selling price is reviewed every two months on the third Tuesday by the Directorate-General for Energy Policy. This review considers the international market costs of raw materials (propane and butane), freight costs, and the euro-dollar exchange rate. Price adjustments are capped at 5%, with any excess or shortfall carried over to future revisions.
LPG, mainly composed of butane, serves as an alternative to natural gas, especially in areas without a mains gas network. According to Royal Decree-Law 11/2022, the maximum price of butane cylinders between 8 to 20 kg was capped at 19.55 euros, a measure extended until June 30, 2024, by Royal Decree-Law 8/2023.

Heatwave causes electric prices to soar
The wholesale electricity market in Spain, known as the ‘pool,’ has surpassed the 100-euro-permegawatt-hour (MWh) threshold as of Thursday, reaching levels unseen since the start of the year due to the rst heatwave of the summer. Speci cally, the average price for the day in the ‘power pool’ was 101.37 euros/ MWh, with a peak of 138.23 euros/MWh between 9 and 10 PM and a low of 79.21 euros/ MWh between 3 and 4 PM. These gures are from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) and reported by Europa Press.
This marks the rst time the wholesale market price has exceeded 100 euros/ MWh since January 9, when
it hit 113.83 euros/MWh.
The ongoing heatwave, which began yesterday and is expected to peak today, is contributing to the high prices, with temperatures predicted to surpass 40 degrees Celsius in most of Spain and reaching up to 44 degrees Celsius in parts of the Guadalquivir valley, according to Aemet, the national weather agency. This price surge will particularly impact customers on the regulated market or PVPC, who experience these daily price uctuations.
Notably, April saw the rst negative prices in the ‘pool’ due to a signi cant in ux of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro, which occasionally
caused prices to plummet. Consequently, April ended with the lowest average electricity price in history at 13.67 euros/MWh.
It is important to note that the ‘pool’ price is not the nal price consumers on the regulated tari pay. A new PVPC calculation method was introduced in 2024, incorporating a variety of medium and long-term prices to mitigate strong price swings while retaining short-term price points to encourage savings and e cient consumption. The proportion linked to the ‘pool’ price will decrease progressively, with futures market indications making up 25% in 2024, 40% in 2025, and 55% from 2026 onward.

Mercadona withdraws its pre-cooked fried eggs
Mercadona has decided to withdraw its popular pre-cooked, wrapped fried eggs from all its stores. While praised by those who have no time to cook, the product faced criticism for its excessive plastic packaging. Sold in packs of two for as little as 1.80 euros, these fried eggs are still available through other companies across Spain despite their removal from Mercadona shelves.
The concept originated with Javier Yzuel, founder of Innovation Foods 360. Re ecting on the fast pace of modern life, Yzuel noted in an interview with Portuguese media outlet NiT that he rarely has time to cook anymore. His idea aimed to provide a convenient solution similar to other pre-cooked dishes like the Spanish potato omelette, another popular item at Mercadona.
The criticism focused on the amount of plastic used in
the packaging. Yzuel aims to switch to recyclable brous material, but approval processes in Europe are slow. He rst conceived the idea in 1998 while studying hotel management and, after years of development, perfected the product and sold the idea to Mercadona in 2014.
The secret to his product lies in achieving a temperature that ensures food safety without overcooking. The eggs are cooked to 65 degrees
to coagulate and then rapidly cooled, resulting in a creamy yolk and crispy edge when reheated in a microwave. Innovation Foods 360, based in Teruel, currently produces over 40,000 packaged fried eggs daily, also catering to fast food restaurants.
This move by Mercadona re ects a growing sensitivity to environmental concerns, even as convenience remains a high priority for many consumers.

This coming week the Hotel celebrates its second birthday. It will be two years since the Truscott family took on the project of Hotel Algorfa and have since come a long way in renovating and rejuvenating the property and business. The team at the Hotel give a special thanks and shout out to the team at Platinum for all their hard work rebuilding the rooms, communal areas and creating the space that we now have. Health & Beauty
I had my niece come to stay recently, bringing her husband and two children; my great nieces. I’ve always said they are welcome to come and stay with me at my house in Spain; there’s plenty of room. However, once they had been here two days, I was asked to babysit while they went out as a couple. I didn’t mind one evening, but then they wanted me to take the children out to the beach for the day, so that they could relax by the pool, and have the villa to themselves...MY villa! I found this to be quite unacceptable, and told them so in a nice way, but I meant it. I am 73 years old, and not in the best of health, and looking after two young girls by myself is quite a task. I was happy to babysit one evening, but not take the girls for the whole day. Things escalated and my niece argued with me and told me I was being selfish. She said her mother does it all the time, but I reminded her that I am childless, and am not her mother. Things weren’t the same after that, and they went home with a flea in their ear. Did I do the right thing?
I guess they were taking advance of you, and maybe they should have considered that you may not be able to cope in the circumstances. You also tell me that they never contributed to shopping, cost of trips or meals out, and that you footed the bill for all of this; you also tell me that the children ran riot in your home, and terrorized your dog. Not the best house guests, and a warning to others that living with family and friends is not always a good idea; better to have them book their own accommodation otherwise it can spell the end of a beautiful relationship.

The Rise of Carbon Laser Facials: A Dive In to the ever-evolving world of skincare, carbon laser facials have emerged as a popular treatment promising clear, radiant skin. This advanced facial treatment, often dubbed the “Hollywood Peel” or “China Doll Facial,” has captivated many with its impressive results and minimal downtime. But what exactly makes carbon laser facials so appealing, and are they worth the hype?Understanding the Process
A carbon laser facial involves applying a layer of liquid carbon to the skin, which penetrates deep into the pores. Once the carbon mask is set, a laser is used to target the carbon particles. The heat from the laser destroys the carbon, taking dead skin cells, contaminants, and oil with it. The result? Exfoliated skin, reduced pore size, and a clearer complexion. The AppealI of immediate Results: One of the most enticing aspects of carbon laser facials is the immediacy of results. Many patients notice a visible improvement in their skin texture and tone right after the first session.
Minimal Downtime: Unlike
more invasive procedures, carbon laser facials require little to no recovery time. This makes it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
Versatility: This treatment is suitable for various skin types and addresses multiple concerns, from acne and enlarged pores to uneven skin tone and fine lines.
Non-Invasive: As a nonsurgical procedure, it provides significant results without the risks associated with invasive treatments.
The Science Behind It. The effectiveness of carbon laser facials lies in the dual-action process. The carbon mask acts as a photo-enhancer, making the skin more receptive to
How many calories do you burn by walking?
Walking is a simple and enjoyable exercise that bene ts both physical and mental health. It can be done outdoors, indoors, or on a treadmill with an incline for increased calorie burn.
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination weekly for overall health and disease prevention.
Calorie burn during walking varies based on factors such as weight, pace, and distance. For example, a 140-pound person burns approximately 64 calories per mile at a moderate pace of 2.8 miles per hour, while a 200-pound person burns about
87 calories under the same conditions. Additionally, age and terrain (e.g., at sidewalk vs. hill) can in uence the total calories burned.
Walking’s adaptability and ease make it a versatile and e ective exercise for improving health.
the laser’s energy. When the laser is applied, it breaks down the carbon, which helps to exfoliate the skin and remove impurities. Additionally, the heat from the laser stimulates collagen production, leading
to firmer, more youthful skin over time.
Conclusion
Carbon laser facials represent a significant advancement in non-invasive skincare treatments. They offer a compelling combination of
immediate results, minimal downtime, and versatility, making them a favorite among those seeking to enhance their complexion quickly and effectively. As with any skincare treatment, consulting with a qualified skincare professional is essential to determine the best approach for your specific needs. In the realm of beauty and skincare, carbon laser facials certainly shine brightly. As technology continues to advance, one can only anticipate further improvements and innovations in this exciting field. For now, they remain a testament to how far we’ve come in our quest for flawless skin. Why not book your consultation at Indiana’s hair and lash boutique and begin your journey to flawless skin
Spanish scientists identify new rare disease in adults, previously only seen in children
A clinical study team at Nuestra Señora del Prado hospital in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo province, has identi ed the world’s rst adult case of ROHHAD syndrome. This extremely rare disease, previously known to a ect only children, now has its rst documented adult case, expanding the understanding of the syndrome. Until now, only about 200 cases of ROHHAD syndrome had been reported globally.
ROHHAD syndrome (Rapidonset Obesity with Hypothalamic dysfunction, Hypoventilation, and Autonomic Dysregulation) leads to severe health issues, including: Rapidly progressive extreme obesity
• Central hypoventilation syndrome (Ondine’s curse): A failure of the body to detect CO2 level changes during sleep.
• Hypothalamic dysfunction: Causes signi cant weight gain and other issues originating from the
hypothalamus part of the brain.
• Altered autonomic nervous system: A ects blood pressure, digestion, bladder function, and more.
• Behavioral changes
This groundbreaking case was documented in 2019 when a 57-year-old patient was admitted with severe respiratory failure, hypothalamic alteration, hyperphagia (insatiable hunger), and excessive sleepiness. The ndings have been published in the journals of the European Respiratory Society and the American Academy of Neurology. Pulmonologist Ángel Ortega, who led the research, emphasized the unusual progression and symptoms observed in the patient.
Historically, ROHHAD syndrome has been seen exclusively in children, leading to premature death due to the lack of e ective treatment and the need for prolonged mechanical ventilation. The mechanisms
Your complete health management in the Mi Quirónsalud App
behind the syndrome remain unknown, complicating treatment e orts.
In addition to this discovery, another signi cant nding related to ROHHAD syndrome has emerged from Spain. The research team at the Pathogenesis of Autoimmune Neuronal Disorders, led by Dr. Josep Dalmau at the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, identi ed a new antibody marker in patients with ROHHAD syndrome. This antibody is present in a high percentage of a ected individuals’cerebrospinal uid. The case from Talavera de la Reina remains the only con rmed adult instance of this syndrome. Dr. Ortega believes that the publication of this study will encourage clinicians worldwide to identify similar cases in adults. This could help rede ne diagnostic criteria, improve understanding of the syndrome’s true extent, and potentially lead to the development of e ective treatments for this highly disabling disease.
Spain plans to increase frequency of driving tests
In Spain, approximately 15.5% of the 27 million drivers are over 65 years old, accounting for around 4.1 million elderly drivers. This demographic has grown by 26.5% between 2001 and 2018. According to data from the Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT), nearly a third of fatal road accidents involve a driver over the age of 65.
A recent incident in Vigo, where a 95-year-old man reversed his car into a restaurant terrace, injuring 12 people, has reignited the debate about the fitness of older drivers. Despite this, statistics show that drivers over 65 have considerably lower accident rates compared to other age groups. Their accident rates are half of those aged 35-44 and four times lower than those under 25.
Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT’s National Road Safety Observatory, noted that the issue with older drivers is more
about their vulnerability rather than their risk of involvement in accidents.
Currently, there is no upper age limit for driving in Spain. The ability of an elderly person to drive is determined through psychophysical tests, including
auditory, visual, and motor coordination assessments required for renewing driving licenses. For drivers up to the age of 65, licenses must be renewed every 10 years. This period is reduced to five years
for those over 65. Under the next DGT directive, in line with EU regulations, the renewal period is expected to be further reduced to two years for drivers aged 70 and over.
Testers have the discretion to
mandate even more frequent renewals, possibly annually.
For professional and commercial drivers, driving licenses must be renewed every five years, and every three years after the age of 65. Spain’s Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles, and Road Safety, Article 13, states that drivers must always be in a position to control their vehicles, but it does not specify a maximum age limit for driving. There are minimum age limits for certain types of driving licenses and stipulations regarding renewal frequencies.
The Barometer of Road Health in the Elderly indicates that traffic accidents among older people are particularly high in July, October, and September, with Fridays being the most accident-prone days. This underscores the need for continued attention to the fitness of older drivers to ensure road safety for all.
ra c access to orrevie a pro enades to close from 1st August when parking lots are full
Starting August 1, the City Council of Torrevieja will close vehicle access to the town center and seafront when the Marina Salinas and Vista Alegre parking lots are full. Unlike last summer, there will be no xed closure time at 8 PM. Instead, the Local Police will coordinate with parking lot management to close access once the lots reach capacity.
Additionally, parking on Ramón Gallud street will be prohibited during August to prevent congestion on Vista Alegre and Libertad avenues. Drivers will be redirected to three other underground parking lots on Ramón Gallud street: El Arco, Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen, and Plaza de Oriente.
The Tra c Department had considered implementing this measure in July, but evening tra c levels have not necessitated it. The new, wider tra c circle near Aduana has helped manage the ow from María Parodi
street. While the councilman doesn’t rule out an earlier implementation, any changes will be communicated in advance.
The closures will primarily a ect Faleria Avenue (formerly Acarretos Street) connecting Gregorio Marañón Avenue with
the seafront. Occasionally, María Parodi street from Ramón Gallud street may also be closed. Drivers can access the downtown area via Heraclio and Pedro Lorca streets and exit through Ramón y Cajal street, where a parking area has been removed to widen the road.

Cruise lines consider changing itineraries amid anti-tourism protests in Spain
The cruise industry is set to increase its capacity by 10% over the next ve years, according to forecasts by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Despite concerns about the anti-tourism movement in Spain and other Mediterranean countries, the industry does not expect its overall turnover to be signi cantly impacted. However, destinations may be a ected due to growing sensitivity among tourists to negative scenes in popular spots like Barcelona, as noted by Marie Caroline Laurent, CLIA’s European director.
Alfredo Serrano, CLIA’s director in Spain, highlighted that other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, are making substantial investments in their tourism sectors and are welcoming tourists more openly. He pointed out that di cult dialogues with city councils, such as in Barcelona, could lead to cancellations and tourist dissatisfaction. Serrano called for better regulation and understanding of protestors’ demands rather than demonizing tourism.
The cruise industry’s turnover in Spain was 5.67 million euros
in 2022, a 6% decrease from 2019. To mitigate the impact of tourism-phobia, CLIA suggests diversifying destinations within Spain. Cities like La Coruña, Ferrol, Almería, Alicante, Cartagena, and Cádiz are being promoted as alternative attractive destinations. With 60% of cruise passengers repeating their trips, expanding the range of destinations is crucial for maintaining the industry’s growth. Projections indicate that tourism will account for 17% of Spain’s GDP in ten years, underscoring the need for higher-level management of this economic sector. The addition of approximately 50 ships in the next ve years to the current eet of 300 underscores the industry’s expansion plans.
In response to environmental concerns, e orts are underway to make the cruise sector more sustainable. Spain is the fourth largest outbound market in Europe and the ninth largest globally for cruise passengers.
In 2023, 586,800 Spaniards traveled on cruises, primarily to the Mediterranean and northern Europe. This demand has prompted ports to adopt
more environmentally friendly practices. For instance, when ships dock, they traditionally keep their engines running to supply energy. However, electrifying docks—a requirement for major EU ports by 2030—allows ships to connect to the grid and turn o their engines. Currently, 40% of
the cruise eet can utilize this technology, with expectations to reach 80% by 2028.
Despite this progress, only 16 ports in Europe currently have the capacity to support electri ed docking, with Malta being the sole port in the Mediterranean. Signi cant investments, such as the 100
million euros in Barcelona, and studies in Bilbao and Cadiz, are underway to enhance this capability. Serrano emphasized that while the technology exists and many ships are equipped for electri cation, the onus now lies on ports to implement these advancements.
Almoradí receives 2 million euros from NextGenerationEU funds to improve its commercial areas
Almoradí City Council has received a total of €1,977,752.37 in European funds from the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Financed by the European Union –NextGenerationEU”. These funds will be used to support improvements in the area surrounding the weekly Saturday Market and in urban commercial areas. In addition, Almoradí City Council will contribute €524,603.11, bringing the total investment to more than €2.5 million.
The grant will be directed towards digital transformation, improvement of points of sale, sustainability and circular economy, supply chain and traceability, as well as awareness and training.
The planned actions include the widening of pavements, improved accessibility, paving and renovation of public lighting and the drinking water network in Canalejas Street; the installation of lighting in the Plaza de la Constitución and ornamental lighting on
the façades of the Church of San Andrés Apóstol, the town hall and the Teatro Cortés; and the renovation of public lighting in the areas adjacent to the Weekly Market and the commercial area of the Mercado de Abastos.
Advertising systems will also be installed at strategic points in the municipality, a decorative element identifying the town will be incorporated and pergolas-canvases will
be installed in the Plaza de la Constitución, in the children’s play area.
These improvements aim to create a more pleasant urban environment, with the aim of promoting and enhancing the image of local commerce in Almoradí. Specific objectives are also set to update and modernise the municipality’s commercial sector, adapting it to new consumer habits and promoting the use of new technologies.
Last week, Labour secured a decisive victory in the UK general election, winning 412 out of 650 seats. The Conservatives won 121 seats, and the Liberal Democrats secured 72. This result marks the worst defeat in the Conservative Party’s parliamentary history. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has accepted responsibility for the defeat, acknowledging the nation’s anger.
Keir Starmer, the new Prime Minister, will start his tenure by visiting all four nations of the United Kingdom. He aims to dismantle the previous government’s controversial Rwanda Scheme and the new Labour government is expected to prioritise improving the UK’s relationship with the EU, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy advocating for a “wide-ranging security pact.”
Elsewhere in the newly formed cabinet, Labour’s Defence Secretary, John Healey, has already travelled to Ukraine, pledging new military supplies and rea rming commitments made by Sunak in April. Health Secretary Wes Streeting plans to meet with junior doctors to address long-standing industrial action and with the British Dental Association to discuss ful lling Labour’s promise of 700,000 urgent appointments.
According to the GDP growth data released this morning, the UK economy grew more than expected in May. The O ce of National Statistics reported 0.4% growth, signi cantly more than the 0.2% expected and after showing no growth in April.
The services sector, has been a consistent driver of growth, maintaining its position above the key 50 level since November last year. This, coupled with a rebound in house building, has contributed signi cantly to the more positive gure. With growth being the new Labour government’s “national mission”, this will be welcome news among ministers and could reassure investors and analysts about the stability of the UK economy.
Following the news, the pound increased in value against both the dollar and the euro this morning. However, expectations of an August rate cut have dropped to 52.7% from 67.5% at the beginning of the
GBP / EUR UPDATE
week.
This could mean the outcome of the next Bank of England rate meeting, scheduled for Thursday 1st August, is still e ectively undecided. Key data releases, including the latest CPI in ation data, Retail Sales, and the Manufacturing and Services PMIs, are all due for release before then, and each release could prove pivotal as markets and policymakers look for further insight into the UK economy over the next few weeks.
The pound is up against the dollar today, after it fell against a basket of currencies following the latest CPI In ation data released in the US yesterday afternoon. Price rises fell faster than expected in June to just 3%, below forecasts of 3.1% and May’s reading of 3.3%.
EUR The French elections on Sunday resulted in a political deadlock, with no group winning a majority.
The New Popular Front (NPF) unexpectedly took the top spot with 182 seats, while Marine Le Pen’s National Rally won 143 out of a total of 577 seats. The parties need a coalition of 289 seats to form a majority, with the most likely outcome at the time of writing being an alliance between left and centrist parties. Whatever happens, the outcome will be challenging with a fragmented parliament and the political landscape in France remains uncertain. President Macron must decide who to ask to form a new government, which will then face a con dence vote in the National Assembly, which, if unsuccessful, means the president cannot call another parliamentary election for 12 months. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has o ered his resignation but will remain in a caretaker role until a new government can be formed
The results seemed to only have a minor impact on the euro, the single currencies only dropping by 0.3% Against the dollar and 0.4% against the pound immediately after.
Looking forward to next week’s interest rate decision, the ECB is unlikely to cut rates on Thursday 18th July, although a 76.4% chance of a September cut remains.

Dolores makes the first melon cut of the season
The Mayor of Dolores, Joaquín Hernández, was in charge of carrying out the first melon cutting of the season on Wednesday, which took place on a terrace in the municipality and was attended by the Regional Deputies, Ana Belén Juárez and Charo Navalón; the promoter and businessman of the project, Juan Miguel Montaner; the president of Riegos de Levante, right bank, José Antonio Andújar; the mayor of Daya Vieja, José Vicente Fernández; councillors of the Dolores City Council, as well as representatives of the Association of Housewives of Dolores.
After cutting the melon, the Dolores City Council held a tasting session, accompanied by ham, in which the characteristics and quality of this product could be seen.
Joaquín Hernández explained that “this second edition is designed to consolidate the initiative that began in Carrizales and has been extended to the two Vegas, Vega Baja and Bajo Vinalopó. We are talking about a product of the same quality as that of Carrizales, a quality
product, close by, with a certified guarantee, and which will provide the seal of our area. Likewise, due to its proximity to El Hondo, this makes the melon harder, sweeter and with specific characteristics.”
Hernández also stressed that “from the City Council we support, as it cannot be otherwise, the farmers of the area and, in this case, Montaner, who brought this proposal. In short, the city councils must collaborate, help and promote the growth of the territory brand and the quality brand so that it continues to prosper.” The mayor also advocated “promoting that cooperative movement that farmers are waiting for so long so
that it can be marketed in a common space, which will undoubtedly make the product sellable at a fair price.”
The project promoter, Juan Miguel Montaner, explained that “this initiative is for medium and small farmers. It is an agroecological product, which also involves the conservation of nature. We would like to thank the city council for its involvement and support in bringing this project forward. We hope to continue growing and for the product to become established among farmers and consumers, as this union is important both for marketing and for working together against pests.”
Mercadona announces significant price cuts on up to 1,000 products
Mercadona has announced another round of price reductions on numerous products, investing 150 million euros to help Spanish households save on their grocery expenses. According to the company, this initiative could save customers up to 150 euros a year on their shopping basket.
In their statement, Mercadona highlighted that this latest price cut adds to their ongoing efforts in 2024, bringing
the total number of reduced-price items to over 1,000. The company emphasized the importance of these reductions for the many households that depend on Mercadona for their daily needs, aiming to provide a high-quality shopping experience at the most competitive prices in the market.
Among the products with reduced prices are staples such as fish, bread, pasta, and olive oil. Notably, this week,
Mercadona has further reduced the prices of its Virgin and Extra Virgin olive oil varieties. Since January, the chain has lowered prices across its Suave/Intenso, Virgin, and Extra Virgin olive oil varieties, resulting in an average price reduction of 14% for olive oil in its supermarkets. This strategic move reflects Mercadona’s commitment to supporting consumers amid economic challenges by making essential goods more affordable.
Torrevieja launches the “On Wheels” Campaign to reinforce street cleaning and waste collection
The Councillor for Urban Cleaning, María José Ruiz, reports that ACCIONA, in collaboration with the Torrevieja City Council, is going to launch the summer campaign “On wheels”, from 19 to 21 July, to inform about the reinforcement of street cleaning and waste collection tasks that will be carried out in the municipality during the summer months, where the population increases from 100,000 to 500,000 inhabitants.
During these days, four people will travel around different areas of the city on electric bicycles, mainly along promenades and beaches, to inform citizens about the reinforcement of these tasks. Merchandising will also be distributed to encourage the population to care for the environment.
Next Friday, July 19, these cyclists will ride from Los Náufragos beach to Paseo Vista Alegre, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00
p.m. On Saturday, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., they will move from Paseo Vista Alegre to Los Locos beach and, finally, on Sunday, July 21, they will focus their efforts on the area
that runs from Cabo Cervera to the center of La Mata, ending at Plaza de Encarnación Pujol and the pier area.
During the summer months, ACCIONA increases
the frequency of sweeping, washing and specific collections of waste bins, as well as increased scrubbing and stripping in squares and seafront promenades,
providing a daily motorbikepoop service to reduce the incidence of dog excrement. As for waste collection, the frequency of container collection has also increased, in addition to the graffiti washing and cleaning service. Likewise, the collection of furniture and container surroundings is carried out on a more frequent basis.
As regards the maintenance of the town’s beaches, during the summer season the resources allocated to manual cleaning are increased, as well as the frequency of mechanical cleaning and algae collection services.
For this summer service, a new fleet of vehicles and machinery consisting of 188 units is available: 39 for waste collection, 93 for street cleaning, 20 for beach cleaning, 20 for management of the Ecopark and 16 for inspection and control services.
Hitman surrenders after seeing himself on Spain’s National Police most-wanted list
Jonathan Montoya Rendón, a notorious Colombian hitman, has surrendered to authorities in Madrid after his photograph appeared on National Police posters and social media as part of a national campaign to locate Spain’s most wanted criminals. Rendón, who had been evading capture since September 2023, was included in the list of Spain’s ten most wanted fugitives on July 8, 2024. Faced with the immense public pressure generated by the campaign, he turned himself in.
Rendón, 39, had been serving a 24-year prison sentence for his role in the assassination of Colombian drug lord Leónidas Vargas, a former associate of Pablo Escobar. The murder took place in 2009 at the Hospital 12 de Octubre in
Madrid, where Vargas was being treated for a lung condition. Rendón and at least four other assassins orchestrated the killing, with Rendón leading the team to Vargas’ hospital room and standing guard outside while the others shot Vargas four times with a silenced pistol. The crime was captured by the hospital’s security cameras, leading to Rendón and six others being convicted for the
murder.
The police, having exhausted all other leads in their search for Rendón, turned to the public for assistance, resulting in a campaign that amassed nearly four million hits across social media and press platforms. This widespread publicity played a crucial role in Rendón’s decision to surrender, according to investigators.
Carlos Mazón underlines the commitment of the Consell to “restore justice in Vega Baja”
The president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has underlined the Consell’s commitment to “restoring justice” with the Vega Baja.
This is what the head of the Consell expressed at the meeting with the Association of Entrepreneurs of Vega Baja (ASEMVEGA), which brought together more than 50 entrepreneurs from the region, and which was also attended by the Councillor for Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism, Nuria Montes.
The head of the Consell has pointed out the capacity of the Vega Baja to “get going and return the investment” in terms of employment and wealth. Thus, he has defended “a conspiracy with the Vega Baja”, has shown his commitment to advance in the widening of the CV-95 and has stressed that when investment is made in this region “it is an act of equality and justice”.
During his speech, the head of the Consell has taken stock of the first year of his government’s management and has stated that the project of change in the Valencian Community “is advancing at an accelerated pace and not in a hasty manner.”
In this regard, he mentioned some measures such as the beginning of the tax reform with the elimination of the inheritance and gift tax, tax relief in the income tax declaration, as well as the elimination of the tourist tax “due to its
impact on business activity.”
He also highlighted the development of the plan for regeneration, purification and use of “every last drop of water” that our Region needs and has highlighted the value of our territory for the responsible management and use of water.
He also referred to other initiatives of the Consell such as the establishment of educational freedom, the elimination of language imposition, the 25% reduction in housing tax for young people, and administrative simplification to streamline business activity.
He also highlighted the implementation of key infrastructures in our territory in the last year and the commitment of the Generalitat “to demand those that have not yet been implemented by the central government.”
The PSOE Vega Baja denounces the cut of more than 3 million euros in the Plan + Cerca aimed at the region
The PSOE Vega Baja has denounced a reduction of more than 3 million euros in the investment of the Plan + Cerca of the Alicante Provincial Council for the 27 towns and cities of the region in 2024, compared to the previous year.
The socialist provincial deputy, Pilar Díaz, spoke about this on Monday on Radio Orihuela Cadena Ser, harshly criticizing these cuts.
Díaz explained that, unlike in previous years, in 2024 the grant funds can only be used to cover current expenses, which prevents them from being used for investments. The MP also stressed the limitation that this represents for local development.
The socialist deputy has accused the Popular Party of continuing to “strangle the
town councils by withdrawing the funds that are now conditional and harm the smallest municipalities in the distribution of this subsidy.” In this sense, Díaz has highlighted that this measure especially affects the towns with fewer resources, which depend largely on these investments for their growth and improvement of infrastructure.
