La Hoya developer to finish abandonded Alto de la Casilla Park

The developer responsible for the works on the Hoya de Torrevieja urbanisation is to also take on the completion of the green area of the Mirador del Alto de la Casilla park.

The project for this park, which covers some 14,000 square metres, was promoted exclusively by a municipal initiative two decades ago, without being linked to the

urban area in which it is located, which falls under the La Hoya Therefore, sector.the builder is obliged to comply with the development of this green area within the scope of one of the largest urban development plans in the country. The urbanisation is 1.8 million square meters with capacity for more than

7,400 homes and one hundred thousand square meters for commercial use.

The developer (made up mainly of Corpic, Eurovilllas del Mar and TM Grupo Inmobiliario) will adapt the park for a conventional green area. However, it is the City Council that is not very clear about how it wants to resolve the adaptation of the park, beyond taking advantage, now, of the fact that the developer must take over that responsibility. The park was another of the many personal projects promoted by the then mayor Pedro Hernández Mateo. The idea promoted in his 1999 electoral programme, involved, first of all, using thousands of tons of rubble dumped in the adjacent ravine of Torreblanca to raise a viewing platform above the ground and support it between concrete walls. Supposedly with a design in the shape of a boat.

This is a plot of land with no

residential interest located between Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas and the N-332, in a corner and has little access, between roads, although it has unbeatable views of the La Mata lagoon and the sea. The original works were halted when they were in the final phase and the company awarded the contract won several lawsuits for compensation against the CityForCouncil. years the site was abandoned. In 2015 a thorough cleaning and fencing was carried out and it ended up being used on a restricted basis as a transfer plant for algae and irregular pruning. This use was intensified and continued until 2022 with the daily passage of garbage trucks and heavy vehicles. At that time the Generalitat opened a serious sanction file for non-compliance with waste and environmental legislation.

Torrevieja Council has indicated that talks are underway with the developer to carry out the project, in addition to requesting sectoral reports from the Ministry of Mobility and the Generalitat Valenciana. This is because the green zone would affect the N-332, which at that point must be doubled, also with access branches to the auditorium and the private hospital and the adjacent residential area. The Generalitat is also involved because the green space is located in the impact buffer zone of the natural park of the lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata.

Winter jabs to start mid-October for flu and Covid

The Valencian Community will launch its annual u and COVID-19 vaccination campaign on 14th October, targeting vulnerable people rst. The joint e ort will follow a staggered schedule, prioritising those at greater risk of severe illness from the viruses.

Valencian Health Minister Marciano Gómez emphasised the urgency of vaccinating at-risk groups, stating the goal is “to immunize the target population and the most vulnerable as quickly as possible.” Gómez highlighted the importance of the vaccines in reducing severe cases and complications, such as pneumonia and heightened risks of heart attack or stroke, which in turn lowers hospital admissions.

The Ministry of Health has outlined four priority groups for vaccination, with noti cations sent via text message to eligible individuals. After vaccinating these groups, the vaccines will be made available to the general public in November.

The rst group to receive the vaccines includes elderly residents in care homes and patients with chronic conditions who are currently in hospital. Health workers and care home sta will also be vaccinated. Next in line are people aged 60 and above, who can receive their vaccines at local health centres. Those with mobility or health issues preventing them from traveling can be vaccinated at home.

Pregnant women and individuals aged ve and up with underlying health conditions make up the third group. Finally, the campaign will cover people working in essential public services or those living with individuals at risk, as well as children between 5 and 18 years of age receiving speci c treatments, smokers, and anyone aged 18 to 59 who requests the vaccines.

Last year, the Valencian Community saw a record number of u vaccinations, with more than 1.16 million people receiving the jab. Authorities hope to surpass that gure this year as they continue e orts to safeguard public health.

Special council meeting focusing on the Coast

Orihuela held a special council meeting last week to speci cally discuss Orihuela Costa and the issue facing the coast and its residents. The meeting was a result of a motion put forward recently by the city´s opposition party and lists 13 items on the agenda.

The meeting lasted 3 hours but was deemed mostly uninformative and unproductive by many with many questions left unanswered.

Among the topics discussed

were the lack of schools and crumbling education system in Orihuela Costa. To which the Councillor for Urban Planning, Matías Ruiz, explained that the prefabricated classrooms in Calle Níspero, will begin to be assembled from the 14th October and will take 2 months, meaning the temporary school will take pupils from January. The councillor also said that a plot of land in Urbanisation La Cuerda has been released by the Ministry for the

building of a permanent school.

Questions over a second health centre came next and Councillor Ruiz kept the oor to give details of a meeting to be held on 11th October with the conselleria to discuss the options, with nancing being top of the agenda.

The coastal seafront path set run from Aguamarina to La Caletta (Cabo Roig) is hoped to be completed by Easter with the budge already allocated and the footbridge over the AP7 at La Re-

gia was also declared a de nite, with a 22-week programme of works due to go out to tender imminently.

Following an update on the 112 tons of rubbish removed from the Costa recently, con rmation was given on a dedicated eco-park in Orihuela Costa with exact location to be announced, although plots in Calle de la Oropendola and Calle Otelo mentioned in local media reports.

Guardia Civil prevent detainee from jumping from Torrevieja court window

Two Civil Guard officers on duty at the Torrevieja courts prevented a detainee from jumping to her death from the third floor of the courthouse, according to the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC).

The AUGC has congratulated the Civil Guards involved “for their impeccable performance and demonstrated professionalism” and pointed out that this type of intervention “is what should be deservedly rewarded as we will surely see in the coming days on the occasion of the feast of the Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of the Corps.”

According to the AUGC, the two officers were in charge of the custody of the detained persons and received the order to present her before the judicial authority of the Court of Instruction number 1 of Torrevieja, which is located on the third floor of the building. The detainee was a young woman of about twenty years of age, required to

make a statement on the events for which she was arrested.

Upon reaching the hallway and landing of the third floor of the building, “in a sudden and fast movement, despite being cuffed, the young woman made a dash for a large window that gives light to the stairs and that was open due to the heat, with the clear and determined intention of throwing herself out,” according to the association.

The detainee managed to get most of her body through the window but was intercepted by the two officers who managed to pull her back inside the building. However, the woman then began struggling violently and tried to throw herself back out of the window. Finally, the officers were able to restrain her and with the help of other officers and her lawyer they managed to calm her down, she was scared, nervous and upset about the prospect

of going before the judge.

The two Civil Guard officers sustained various injuries as a result of the struggle with the detainee, for which they had to be treated in a hospital, although they are not serious.

The AUGC insists on its demand that members of the Civil Guard be considered, like the regional police forces, as “high-risk professions”, since “this type of incident during their work, or in other more serious incidents in which they participate daily, expose their physical integrity in tenths of a second.”

In a statement, the Unified Association of Civil Guards congratulated the officers involved in the court drama, who, despite being slightly injured, “ did not hesitate to risk their lives to prevent not only a simple escape attempt by a detainee, but also the death or serious injury of the person as a result of a violent fall from a height of three floors.”

Opposition presents request to court over Orihuela Costa Schools

The socialist opposition party in Orihuela (PSOE) in Les Corts Valencianes will submit a Non-Law Proposal (PNL) for debate in the regional plenary session, after the deputy José Luis Lorenz noted, during a visit to Orihuela Costa, the “unsustainable situation” of the CEIP Los Dolses and CEIP Playas de Orihuela, which “are on the verge of collapse due to saturation and the lack of adequate infrastructure to meet the growing demand for schooling,” explained the PSOE councillor, María García.

In the case of the CEIP Los Dolses, it has an official capacity for 400 students, but it housed up to 710 in the 2023-2024 academic year, while the CEIP Playas de Orihuela reached 795 students. The councillor has indicated that “the centres are overwhelmed, with prefabricated classrooms occupying the courtyards, classes that are taught in corridors or warehouses and ratios that exceed 27 students per classroom.

The schools in Orihuela Costa are at their limit and, if action is not taken immediately, we run the risk of the educational system collapsing completely.”

The socialist PNL proposes a series of urgent measures, including the immediate expansion of the CEIP Los Dolses using a plot of more than 20,000 m2 available in the area and the urgent construction of the third school, CEIP Nº 20.

“This new academic year, the situation is even more critical because the number of enrolments has increased and the lack of classrooms is compounded by the shortage of adequate toilets, extreme temperatures in the courtyards with no shade and canteens that cannot serve hot food. We cannot allow pupils and teaching staff to continue working in these conditions,” stressed García, recalling that the previous regional government had already shown its support for

these improvements, which are now paralysed. In addition, the PNL also addresses other educational issues such as the creation of language immersion classrooms for the numerous students who arrive without knowledge of Spanish and the opening of vocational training cycles to reduce the worrying early school leaving rate due to the lack of training offers and the lack of means of transport to continue their training in other towns, García pointed out. The councillor has expressed that “we are concerned that the only response that the Popular Party seems to offer is the increase in classroom ratios, a solution that should be the last option, since it would only make the problem worse. Increasing the ratios only adds pressure to classrooms that are already saturated, negatively affecting both students and teachers, and endangering the quality of education.”

Crimestoppers searches Spain for young Brit

Detectives in Lancashire in the UK are widening their net to Spain in the search for 21-year-old Thomas Dures. Dures is a person of interest in the murder of 19-year-old Matthew Daulby, which took place shortly after midnight on 29 July 2023 in Ormskirk, on the border of Lancashire and Merseyside. O cers attended the scene following reports of a disturbance and found Daulby with a stab wound from which he sadly died in hospital later that evening.

Nineteen-year-old Henry Houghton was jailed for life after being found guilty of Matthew’s murder in March 2024. However, o cers still want to speak to Dures as part of their enquiries.

They are asking anybody living in or visiting Spain to be on the lookout for Thomas Dures and, working in partnership with UK charity Crimestoppers, have o ered a £20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The reward is only available to people who pass on information exclusively to the UK charity Crimestoppers, either via their website or by calling +44 800 555 111.

DCI Andy Fallows of Lancashire Constabulary’s Force Major Investigation Team said: “It has now been over

12 months since Matthew’s murder and although one man has been found guilty, his family’s wait for justice goes on.”

“Thomas Dures is out there withholding crucial information from detectives. I have o cers in the UK and our National Crime Agency/ Interpol colleagues in Europe searching for him.

As part of those searches, I am asking for the public in Spain to get in contact with Crimestoppers if they see Dures or have information on his whereabouts,” he added.

Neil Keeping, NCA Regional Manager in Spain, said: “Dures has known links to Spain and could be living anywhere in the country. We are therefore

appealing to people who reside in Spain and visiting holidaymakers to come forward with any information relating to his whereabouts.”

Gary Murray, Northwest Regional Manager at Crimestoppers, said: “We know it can be di cult to give information directly to the police, especially when it involves dangerous criminals. This is why Crimestoppers exists as we guarantee you stay 100% anonymous when you pass on what you know. We are here 24/7 via our website or by calling our UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111. For anyone in Spain who knows of Thomas Dures whereabouts, please contact Crimestoppers via our website Crimestoppers-uk.org.”

Christmas stress !!!

In August, the first client called me to ask if I could help her with a choice for the coming Christmas. I was still sitting quietly in the sun and was not yet thinking about “what are we going to eat and drink for Christmas”.

But I do understand, you want to have it in top order for your guests and there are enough people who are in the kitchen from eight in the morning to six in the evening to be able to put a great dinner on the table.

And of course we at Beau

Wine Tastings are happy to help everyone to realize their wishes.

Christmas is often celebrated in a big way with presents and a real Christmas dinner.

To give attention to all parts of the dinner I will make a few suggestions, namely;

The starter, a soup or a cocktail. With a soup you can opt for a fresh white wine if you use broth, with a creamy soup the chardonnay can be very surprising.

For the main course

you can simply choose, with small game you can choose a fruity red wine, with large game you also have to drink hearty. A beautiful Syrah/ Shirazx comes into its own beautifully, but also a St. Emelion or pomerol.

For fish, we choose a Cabernet Sauvignon (white fish) or a nice chardonnay with an oily fish.

And with dessert we like to drink a nice liqueur. Consider our Rheinknie, a liqueur made from a real Alpine milk with a noble brandy.

Combine that with a fried slice of pineapple, ice cream and espresso coffee.

At Beau Wine Tastings in Albir you can come and taste all the wines in advance so that you know what you are going to drink.

We wish you a tasty meal Seal

New species of Dinosaur unearthed in Spain

A new species of sauropod dinosaur from the Upper Cretaceous has been identified in the Lo Hueco deposit in Spain’s central Cuenca region. The discovery reveals that there were endemic and migratory species in Europe.

In 2007, during work on the Madrid-Levante highspeed railway line, fossils were collected of one of the last giants to inhabit Europe before the extinction of the dinosaurs. Qunkasaura pintiquiniestra is the name of the new species of dinosaur that lived on the Iberian Peninsula 73 million years ago.

The new species belongs to the sauropod group, which are distinguished by being large, longnecked and long-tailed herbivorous dinosaurs that are rare in the rest of Europe. Qunkasaura pintiquiniestra stands out for being one of the most complete sauropod skeletons found in Europe. From this specimen found

at the Lo Hueco site, it was possible to collect cervical, dorsal and caudal vertebrae, part of the pelvic girdle and elements of the limbs.

The specimen would have been around 15 metres long, so head to tail, it could have weighed around ten tonnes and been three metres high up to the shoulder. But these animals, the sauropod dinosaur group, could reach much larger sizes, according to the discovery team.

The presence of this specimen in Lo Hueco also suggests that this and other species moved between continents.

These groups of large dinosaurs lived in a territory that at the time corresponded to an island.

The Iberian Peninsula at that time was an island joined to the southern part of France. It is known as the Ibero-Armorican island, which includes what is now part of Portugal, Spain and southern France.

According to researchers, in island situations, species tend to evolve to decrease in size because there is less availability of resources. It is on this basis that it is estimated that Qunkasaura did not evolve in Europe but migrated from Asia to the Iberian Peninsula.

The name “Qunkasaura pintiquiniestra” comes from various geographical and cultural references close to the Lo Hueco deposit: “Qunka” refers to the oldest etymology of the toponym of the Cuenca and Fuentes area, “Saura” corresponds to the feminine of the Latin “saurus” (lizard) and honours the Spanish painter Antonio Saura, who died in Cuenca in 1998, and “pintiquiniestra” alludes to the “Queen Pintiquiniestra”, a character from a novel quoted in Miguel Cervantes’ “Don Quixote de la Mancha”. Part of the dinosaur’s skeleton is now on display at the Castilla-La Mancha Palaeontology Museum in Cuenca.

Generalitat Conducts load test on CV95 bridge in San Miguel de Salinas

The Generalitat Valenciana has conducted a load test on the new CV95 bridge in San Miguel de Salinas as part of the final steps before its official opening. The load test was performed to ensure that the bridge’s structure behaves as expected and that the construction aligns with the design standards. Mª

José Martínez Ruzafa, the General Director of Infrastructure and Urban Projects, oversaw the procedure and explained that six trucks, each weighing 38 tonnes, were placed on each roadway of the bridge, for a combined weight of 228 tonnes. The trucks were precisely positioned to assess the bridge’s response to the load.

Before the test, the exact weight of each vehicle was verified, and their positions were marked on the bridge deck for precision. The test measures the deformations experienced by the bridge to ensure they fall within the

acceptable range as per the design. The gathered data is then analysed using a computer to confirm the structure’s integrity.

The new bridge replaces a deteriorating structure with issues such as subsidence, pillar undermining, and damage to the vault. Instead of repairing the old bridge, the Generalitat opted to construct a new one, consisting of two spans of 25 metres each, supported by prefabricated girders and

a central pier. The roadway features two 3.5-metre lanes and shoulders of 2.5 and 1.5 metres. The total project cost was €2,689,301, declared an emergency by the Consell in April for safety reasons.

The CV-95 road is a key route in the region, connecting various towns like Orihuela, Bigastro, Jacarilla, San Miguel de Salinas, and Torrevieja, and spanning 26.4 kilometres. This bridge plays a vital role in maintaining efficient transportation between these municipalities.

The release of the UK’s PMI data from last week seemed to continue to bene t the pound throughout the week, despite Keir Starmer’s comments that the government’s rst budget in October is “going to be painful”. This followed last week’s higher-than-expected UK government borrowing for July, which stoked fears that Chancellor Rachel Reeves may need to raise taxes in her upcoming budget.

Last week’s Manufacturing and Services PMI data for the UK both came in ahead of market expectations, with manufacturing coming in at 52.5, a 26-month high and services PMI at 53.3, a 4-month high. The Bank of England’s Governor Andrew Bailey commented on the latest data; “This is consistent with a process of disin ation which is steady and more in keeping with a soft landing than a recessioninduced process.”

Bailey also added that the central bank should be “careful not to cut interest rates too quickly or by too much.” His more hawkish comments have fed into markets expecting interest rates to hold steady at the next monetary policy meeting on 19th September, with only a 21.7% chance of a 25-basis point cut.

Following its multi-week upward trend, sterling remains on the front foot. GBP/USD rose as much as 0.85% at the end of last week, following dovish comments from the Federal Reserve’s Chair Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole Symposium, which provoked signi cant

selling in the USD. The currency pair is now experiencing two-year highs, which has seen the pound reach its highest level since March 2022 and is currently still above 1.32.

Against the euro, the pound is seeing threeweek highs and is sitting just above 1.19.

This week was relatively quiet for UK data following Monday’s bank holiday, with no notable data events.

EUR

European PMIs came out broadly lower than expected last week. Germany’s manufacturing and services PMI fell below forecast by 1.3 and 0.9 points, coming in at 42.1 and 51.4, respectively. In France, the data painted a similar picture in the manufacturing industry, with the PMI coming in 2.3 points below forecast at 42.1, while the services PMI was more favourable at 55.0, 4.8 points above forecast.

On Thursday, the German Preliminary CPI monthly data was released. Markets expected in ation to fall to 2.1% from 2.3% in July, but it fell below expectation to 1.9%.

Additionally, the CPI Flash Estimate yearly data was released for the European Union this morning, which saw in ation fall from 2.6% to 2.2%

CHS conducts maintenance and waste cleanup in floating barriers at the estuary

The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) is conducting a new round of cleaning and waste removal from the oating grid in the old Segura River channel near its mouth in Guardamar, as well as from the oating barriers in drainage channels that feed into the river. These e orts aim to prevent waste from reaching the Mediterranean Sea via the river and the traditional irrigation canals, where waste is frequently discarded.

The project, valued at €361,263.55 and contracted for 24 months, includes not only the cleaning process but also the maintenance and conservation of the wasteprevention structures. It involves the transfer and classi cation of materials to an authorized waste manager, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

In the last cleanup, conducted in late July, the CHS removed 365.64 tons of urban waste, 42.96 tons of plant debris, 0.83 tons of

animal remains, and 0.46 tons of hazardous waste. This work took place across ve oating barriers, three in Alicante and two in Murcia, as well as 23 waste detection points in both provinces, identi ed by CHS environmental agents and public noti cations.

The CHS stresses the importance of public

awareness, particularly among users of the traditional irrigation channels, urging them not to discard waste into the waterways or nearby lands within the Public Hydraulic Domain. Proper river maintenance and functioning depend heavily on the preservation of these infrastructures and their ecosystems.

Petition to improve local healthcare

A new petition is collecting signatures to demand that the Ministry of Health invests in the Torrevieja Health Department. The signature collection will take place until Monday, 21st October at the doors of the local Health Centres and Torrevieja Hospital.

The Platform for 100% public and quality healthcare in the department of Torrevieja has launched a petition to demand that the Valencian Government allocate a budget for the execution of necessary and urgent works, as well as the

provision of staff and services in the Primary Care centres and Torrevieja Hospital, in line with the increase in residents. They claim that these facilities, since the creation of the 22nd health department (Salud 22 which covers Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa), have remained unchanged without adapting to the strong population increase.

This situation generates long waiting lists for surgery or appointments with specialists or endless hours of waiting in the Emergency Room, among other healthcare deficiencies.

DGT plans to revoke licences of drivers with alcohol abuse issues until rehabilitation

Spain’s DirectorateGeneral for Traffic (DGT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and regional authorities, is developing a plan to revoke the driving licences of individuals with alcohol abuse problems, particularly repeat offenders, until they complete a rehabilitation process.

Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT’s National Road Safety Observatory, explained that current regulations already deem individuals with alcohol dependence unfit to drive. He emphasized the need to incorporate a public health approach, aiming to combine punitive measures with rehabilitation.

The proposal involves conditionally withdrawing licences from drivers identified

by health authorities as having alcohol addiction.

Once rehabilitated, drivers could regain their licences. Gómez noted that this is a longterm project, requiring cooperation with regional governments.

While driver recognition centres already have protocols to detect addictions, detection rates remain low.

During a recent

conference on drinkdriving, Gómez highlighted that alcohol addiction is considered a disease that disqualifies individuals from driving under both European and Spanish regulations. He also suggested lowering the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers, referencing the successful road safety records of countries like Norway and Sweden, where the limit is 0.2 grams per litre.

Unemployment figures stable across Eurozone

The eurozone unemployment rate has remained stable at 6.4% throughout June, July and August, and down 0.2% on August last year. Spain, Greece and Sweden have the highest rates of unemployment.

The latest data on EU and Eurozone unemployment has been released, indicating it has stabilised for the present. The EU unemployment rate was 5.9% in August 2024, with more than 13 million people out of jobs across the bloc. That was a 0.1% improvement on June and July, where it stood at 5.9% - the same figure as August last year.

Within the eurozone, Eurostat data revealed a 6.4% unemployment rate in August, down only 0.1% from July and August 2024, and down 0.2% from August 2023. Almost 11 million people are currently unemployed in the 20-country euro area. Looking at August 2023 figures, unemployment in the EU as a total was down by 142,000 and down by 233,000 in the euro area.

Spain (11.3%), Greece (9.5%) and Sweden (8.4%) have the

highest unemployment rates of all. Czechia (2.6%), Poland (2.9%) and Malta (3.0%) showed the lowest ones.

There were still more than 2.7 million unemployed under 25s in August 2024 in the EU, 14.3% of the bloc, the data reveals. However, compared with July 2024, youth unemployment was down by around 50,000 and by 102,000 from August last year.

Again, the worst rates are in Spain (24.7%), Sweden (23.8%)

and Estonia (22.7%). Germany does best, with 6.8% of its youth unemployed, followed by Malta and the Netherlands (8.9% respectively).

There are more women unemployed in the EU than men: 6.1% versus 5.7%. The trend for women is stable while men’s unemployment fell by 5.8% from July. The unemployment peaks for women are in Spain at (12.8%), Greece (11.6%), and Sweden (8.4%).

Civil Guard investigates man for stealing tomatoes for street sale in Albatera

The Civil Guard, in collaboration with the Albatera Local Police, has investigated a man for stealing approximately 200 kilograms of tomatoes, which he intended to sell in the municipality. As part of the investigation, authorities managed to recover and return 75 kilograms of the stolen tomatoes to their rightful owners. The case has been forwarded to the Court of First Instance and Instruction of Orihuela.

The incidents began in August when the suspect was seen stealing tomatoes from various farms in Albatera and selling them on the streets,

even o ering them to drivers at tra c lights. In response to growing concern among local farmers and residents, the Roca Team from Torrevieja, the Dolores Main Police Station, and Albatera’s Local Police launched a joint investigation. Over several days, they increased surveillance in agricultural areas to prevent further thefts and identi ed the suspect, a 43-year-old Moroccan man with a history of similar crimes.

Despite not having a registered address, public tips helped the authorities locate the man in an abandoned warehouse, where they found 75 kilograms of stolen

tomatoes. These were returned to the farmers. On September 26, the individual was formally investigated for four separate thefts, involving a total of 200 kilograms of produce.

The Civil Guard also issued a warning, urging the public not to purchase fruit and vegetables from suspicious sources. Doing so encourages criminal activity and harms both farmers and the national agricultural market. Moreover, consuming products sold without proper controls poses serious health risks, as they may not meet safety standards for consumption.

Spain’s tourism boom continues with record spending in August

The international tourism boom in Spain shows no signs of slowing down, and August, the peak holiday month, was no exception.

Spain welcomed a total of 64.3 million foreign tourists in the rst eight months of 2024, with spending reaching record levels. According to data released this Wednesday by the INE national statistics institute, tourist spending has surged by 17.6%, totaling 86.5 billion euros.

In August alone, nearly 11 million visitors arrived in Spain, marking a 7% increase compared to August

of last year. Tourist spending in the month exceeded 15.3 billion euros, a 13% rise. The average expenditure per tourist was 1,405 euros during their stay, which is 5% higher than in the same period last year. Additionally, daily spending saw a 9% increase, reaching 188 euros per person.

The top countries of origin for tourists in the rst eight months of 2024 were the United Kingdom, with nearly 12.7 million visitors (up 7.8%), France with almost 9.2 million tourists (up 10.1%), and Germany with more than 8 million visitors (up 9.3%).

Dog owner in Spain reported for accidentally running over pet and disposing of It in a rubbish bin

The Guardia Civil in Albacete, within Spain’s Castilla–La Mancha region, has reported a dog owner for animal abuse after abandoning his severely injured pet in a rubbish bin. The dog, which later died from its injuries despite receiving veterinary care, was reportedly run over accidentally by its owner while parking his car in the garage of his home in Mingogil, a district of Hellín (Albacete).

Rather than seeking veterinary help, the owner placed the injured dog in a sack and discarded it in a rubbish bin. The dog’s distressed howling caught the attention of a local resident, who promptly informed the Refugio de Sori animal shelter in Hellín. The shelter initially took custody of the animal, which had sustained severe head injuries and a

fractured leg, and rushed it to a nearby veterinary clinic for emergency care.

The next day, the dog was transferred to the Fundacion Animal Rescue in the Madrid region, but despite multiple surgeries, its life could not be saved.

The Guardia Civil’s Seprona nature protection service in Hellín became aware of

the incident through social media, where the case had been publicly denounced. Upon investigation, o cers con rmed that the dog, a 17-year-old Yorkshire Biewer terrier named Tobi, belonged to a resident of Mingogil. The owner has now been reported for an alleged crime of animal abuse.

“Moneyball”: Financial Lessons for Expats in Spain

The best-selling book “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis told the absorbing story of how Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s baseball teams consistently outperformed teams with much larger payrolls.

What was their secret?

In a word, they “reimagined” how to assemble a winning team, ignoring or overturning decades of conventional thinking within the baseball world on how to do so.

Peter Dougherty – an American nancial planner in Spain – believes BISSAN Wealth Management has succeeded in a similar way, by “rethinking” nancial services for expats. The improvements that Billy Beane’s Oakland A’s wrought on baseball have curious parallels to what BISSAN has done for expat nancial planning in Spain.

Emotions

In baseball, scouts historically evaluated amateur players, deciding who to select with a team’s draft picks. But Beane discovered that scouts were human and sometimes developed biases toward players of which they may not even be aware. As he said: “We as humans have an emotional side that gets in the way of thinking clearly”.

Similarly, Dougherty says: “At BISSAN we’ve discovered that what’s important for investment success is human behavior. As investors we consistently get lower investment returns than if

we had simply chosen one asset class –any asset class --and stayed invested in it. How is that possible? It’s because of our behavior: we buy when the whole world buys, sell when they sell, and we get swayed by greed and panic.”

What to focus on

For years baseball managers focused on batting average in trying to score runs. But statistics proved that a team’s on-base and slugging percentages were better correlated to scoring than batting average. Why didn’t managers adapt? Because batting average was easy to understand. The A’s realized that relying on it was safe; managers wouldn’t be criticized for doing what everyone else did.

Dougherty says: “In nance, people focus on volatility as the way to assess

the “riskiness” of an investment. For example, owning individual stocks is risky because they can suddenly fall 50%; deposits in a savings account are not risky because they can’t. Volatility is easy to understand, just as batting average is in baseball. But BISSAN believes that a family not having money available for a payment when it’s due -it’s mortgage or school tuition bill, for example -- is a bigger risk than whether their investment earnings are volatile.”

Putting it all together

Ignoring conventional baseball wisdom, the Oakland A’s came to rely on player statistics and less on the opinion of their scouting department. Nonetheless, they were able to blend the strengths of both resources: computer results and human judgement. They also transitioned

their focus from easily calculated measures like batting average to those more closely correlated with winning baseball games.

BISSAN asks clients about their nancial goals, what they’d like to accomplish. Is it retirement, funding college education for children, buying a home? They quantify these goals in Cash Flow Risk Management® (CFRM), their innovative optimization model created to determine clients’ future cash out ows and then park the moneys necessary for these expenses before they’re due. CFRM helps clients: avoid the risk of selling at the wrong time in the market, i.e., when it’s down – by planning from the outset their money out ows

Dougherty is American, which means he not only enjoys baseball, but he also blends the strengths of BISSAN’s inventive nancial planning skills and its talented team of Spaniards with a native English-speaking nancier.

But his job is not easy. Most expats in Spain face complications because every country’s nancial rules and systems di er. As a baseball fan, Peter likens these di culties to what baseball player Willie Stargell said about his own challenges: “They give you a round bat, and they throw you a round ball, and then they tell you to hit it square.”

On location with ADAPT In San Pedro

If you happen to be in San Pedro one day and see a lot of mad people in dressed as pantomime characters lming their strange behaviour, do not panic, it will be the ADAPT Theatre Group lming one of our annual short comic videos which we insert into our pantomimes to give them a bit of local colour. We have done more than ten of these now, each one moving the story of the panto on in interesting ways – from Sleeping Beauty’s prince hacking

his way through a forest (AKA the local park) to Aladdin pleading with the local mayor to release his monkey from jail, we have managed to involve many well known local people and places to the delight of our audiences. We have great fun doing it as well, as you can see from this picture of Captain Hook and Peter Pan ghting a duel next to the San Pedro boat roundabout, to release poor Wendy who has been tied to a nearby lamppost

Yes, our pantomimes are quite di erent, as you will see if you come along to this year’s Snow White and the 7 Guiris” to be performed at the end of November (more details to follow). We are sponsored by the ADAPT Metal Detecting group and all money raised goes to local charities. Spain set to legalise cannabis for treating chronic pain and chemotherapy side effects

After three years of delays, Spain’s Ministry of Health released the draft royal decree on September 30 to permit the prescription of cannabis preparations, which will now undergo public consultation before nal approval.

The draft outlines strict regulations on the medical use of cannabis, specifying the conditions for which it can be prescribed: multiple sclerosis (speci cally sti ness and muscle spasms), severe refractory epilepsy (epilepsy unresponsive to conventional treatments), chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and refractory chronic pain (persistent pain not alleviated by standard treatments). Experts assert that there is “scienti c evidence” supporting the e cacy of medical cannabis for these conditions.

Under this framework, the preparation and dispensing of cannabis products—

primarily oils, inhalants, or oral medications— will be managed solely by hospital pharmacies and specialized doctors. These professionals must document the treatment in the patient’s medical record and provide information on available clinical evidence, anticipated bene ts, and potential risks. Prescriptions will only be issued “when there are no authorized medicines or when existing options do not meet the patient’s needs.” Additionally, all cannabis compounds must be registered with the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS).

The draft emphasizes that “scienti c evidence has shown a variable degree of bene t of cannabis and its extracts in some therapeutic indications,” noting that these products can serve as personalized alternatives when conventional treatments fail.

In May 2021, a subcommittee was formed to investigate the medical use of cannabis, leading to a report that detailed its medicinal applications. However, despite broad support across various political parties, the previous health ministers did not act on the recommendations. After taking o ce in November 2023, Health Minister Mónica García committed to advancing the initiative.

Patients, however, consider the proposed regulations “too restrictive.” Carola Pérez, president of the Spanish Medical Cannabis Observatory, expressed concerns that the drafting process did not include patient input, and believes the current version will bene t “very few people.” She warned that this may result in users turning to the black market for access to cannabis.

Health & Beauty

When my father died, my brothers and I had the task of clearing out the family home and we came across some old photos and correspondence. We now wish we hadn’t read the letters because the whole thing points towards a relationship that my father had with a woman at work. We were all rattled about it, except for our one brother who said amazingly, that he had known about it. It turns out my brother saw our father and this woman together once, when he was in a restaurant with friends; both men saw each other but it was never mentioned afterwards. My brother said that the two of them were clearly more than friends, and the look on his father’s face said everything he needed to know. I for one am having difficulty in putting it out of my mind. My mother has long since died, but I am sure she never knew about any affair, I feel she would have gone mad at him, but surely with the discovery of these letters, she may have known something and not told me. She and I were very close and she would not have been able to keep anything upsetting from me. I am so angry with my father, and feel any grief I felt for him has been washed away.

Of course it would have been better for your father to have destroyed these letters before he died. You are obviously all grieving at the loss of your father and this loss has been made worse by your finding these letters. You may have feelings of betrayal on behalf of your mother. Talking to each other about it will help. It is clear your brother knew about it years ago, and did not say anything; perhaps he may need to talk further. There’s no undoing this, so you all need to deal with it now and lay the matter to rest. Counselling may help if you are struggling.

WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@ COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

As the temperature drops after summer, our skin experiences various changes due to reduced humidity, colder air, and exposure to indoor heating. These conditions can lead to several skin issues:

Common Skin Changes in Colder Weather:

1. Dryness and Dehydration: The cold air outside and the dry, heated air indoors reduce the moisture in the skin. This can cause the skin to become dry, flaky, or cracked.

2. Increased Sensitivity: The skin’s protective barrier may weaken in colder weather, leading to increased sensitivity and irritation.

3. Chapping and Redness: Cold, windy weather can strip moisture from exposed skin, particularly on the lips and cheeks, causing chapping and redness.

4. Dullness: Lack of hydration can cause the skin to lose its glow, becoming dull or uneven in tone.

5. Exacerbation of Conditions: Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea can flare up during colder months due to the dry, harsh weather.

Beneficial Treatments for Cold-Weather Skin Care:

1. Hydration: Moisturizers: Opt for richer, oil-based moisturizers or creams with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides. These help retain moisture and strengthen the skin barrier.

Humidifiers: Using a humidifier indoors can combat the drying effects of central heating.

2. Gentle Cleansing: Use hydrating, nonfoaming cleansers to avoid stripping natural oils from the skin.

Avoid hot showers, as they can worsen skin dryness; lukewarm water is better.

The healthiest way to prepare chicken

Chicken is a rich source of protein and essential nutrients like magnesium, selenium, and iron that many diets lack. Evidence suggests that including lean, unprocessed chicken such as chicken breast may support weight management and reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease. However, how you cook your chicken can a ect its health bene ts.1

Connolly G, Campbell WW. Poultry consumption and human cardiometabolic health-related outcomes: A narrative review. Nutrients. 2023;15(16):3550.

For example, high-heat cooking methods such as frying and grilling can increase your exposure to cancerous chemicals (carcinogens), including heterocyclic aromatic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).1

Cooking chicken using lower heat cooking methods, avoiding direct exposure of chicken to an open ame, and minimizing cooking times can help reduce the formation of these chemicals, allowing you to enjoy its health bene ts.

3. Exfoliation: Regular, but gentle exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and improve the skin’s texture. Look for products with lactic acid or gentle physical exfoliants.

Avoid over-exfoliating, as this can lead to irritation and damage during colder months.

4. Sun Protection: Even in cooler weather, UV rays can still damage your skin, so use sunscreen daily.

5. Barrier Repair: Look for ingredients that help repair the skin barrier, such as niacinamide and ceramides. This can prevent transepidermal water loss and protect against external irritants.

6. Lip Care: Regularly apply a hydrating lip balm with ingredients like beeswax or shea butter to prevent chapping.

7. Hydrating Masks: Incorporating hydrating masks with ingredients like aloe vera, honey, or hyaluronic acid once or twice a week can provide an extra boost of moisture.

8. Hand and Foot Care: Cold weather can cause hands and feet to become dry and cracked. Use thicker creams on these areas and wear gloves or socks after application to lock in moisture.

9. Layering Skincare: Layering lightweight hydrating serums (like hyaluronic acid) under your moisturizer can help keep your skin plump and hydrated without feeling heavy.

By adjusting your skincare routine to the colder weather, you can help maintain healthy, hydrated skin through fall and winter. Now is the perfect time to start a regular beauty routine and keep thay summer glow all year round, book a free consultation at Indiana’s hair and lash boutique

Winners announced for the Specsavers Ópticas Summer photography competition

Elena Galdón Callaway, aged 10 from Caleta de Vélez, Malaga, and Aitana Gallego, aged 16 from Alicante, were chosen as the winners of the 2024 Summer Photography Competition, organized by Specsavers Ópticas. Their wonderful images, really captured the fun, sun and activities they were enjoying during the summer holidays and hundreds of people took to social media to vote for their favourite.

A panel of three judges whittled down the entries to the final five in each category. The judging panel was made up of award-winning photographer David Tome, Carrie Frais, Director of the website Mum Abroad, and Dispensing Optician Gracie Glister from Specsavers Ópticas in Javea. They were really impressed with the standard of the entries.

Carrie Frais commented, “The talent showcased in this competition is remarkable, with each photo capturing the joy, energy, and vibrancy of summer in a unique way. These young photographers have truly brought the spirit of the summer season to life

through their lenses.”

Gracie Glister was also blown away by the standard, “The quality of these summer images is exceptional, with crisp detail and vibrant colours that bring every element to life. The high resolution allows for a clear, sharp focus, the colour balance is precise, with rich blues and greens that feel natural and warm golden tones that reflect the heat and light of summer. Depth of field is often used expertly,

blurring the background just enough to keep the subjects front and centre, while still maintaining a sense of the broader environment. The lighting in these images is perfect, with natural sunlight enhancing every scene, making the photos look bright, inviting, and full of life. These qualities combine to create images that feel immersive and timeless, as if they could pull you right into the joyful moments they

capture.”

All three judges selected Elena Galdón Callaway’s beach scene in their shortlist. Dave Tome commented, “This is a photo that immediately fills our ears with the gentle murmur of the waves and the squawking of the seagulls.

The colour of the dress makes the girl with her back to us in the foreground stand out even more, and in the background - the summer.”

This fantastic photo gained over 200 comments across Facebook and Instagram, and was the runaway winner in the Junior Category.

All three judges also shortlisted Aitana Gallego’s waterfall image in their shortlist. Despite a hotly contested fight between two of the Senior entries, this dramatic image won, with over 100 comments on social media choosing this as their favourite.

David Tome commented, “Summer is not only about the beach, and what could be better than cooling off in one of the many waterfalls that cover our beautiful country. Including a person

in the photograph makes us understand the impressive scale of the waterfall.”

Gracie Glister was also very impressed by this picture, “The image captures the breathtaking beauty of a waterfall in the height of summer, its cascading waters tumbling over moss-covered rocks into a crystal-clear pool below. Sunlight filters through the dense canopy of trees, casting dappled light onto the scene and illuminating the mist that rises from the falls, creating a soft, ethereal glow. The scene feels both tranquil and full of life, embodying the refreshing, untamed energy of summer in nature.”

These talented young photographers each win a €50 Amazon voucher and a pair of sunglasses to enjoy the sun in style.

The team from Specsavers Ópticas would like to thank everyone who entered the photography competition and congratulate them for the high standard of the entries. You can see all the shortlisted entries on Facebook @ SpecsaversOpticas and Instagram @specsaversspain.

The top ten best-selling brands in Spain for September also include Seat (4,090 units), Dacia (4,086 units), Mercedes (3,633 units), BMW (3,468 units), and Peugeot (3,185 units).

These results highlight the growing presence of electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 in Spain’s competitive car market, alongside the continued success of traditional bestsellers like the Dacia Sandero.

Wireless charging for electric vehicles marks the future of mobility in Spanish city

Range limitations and insufficient charging points remain challenges for electric vehicles (EVs), despite advancements in technology and an expanding charging network. Zaragoza city council, in partnership with tech firm CIRCE, has introduced an innovative wireless charging technology that works on the move, aiming to revolutionize urban transport. This initiative is part of the European INCIT-EV project, which has received €15 million in EU funding, with nearly €3 million invested directly in Zaragoza.

Zaragoza’s Environment Councillor, Tatiana Gaudes, emphasized the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility and its openness to testing cutting-edge technologies. CIRCE’s General Manager, Andrés Llombart, highlighted how the wireless system, which eliminates the need for cables, is ready to integrate into urban infrastructures, advancing cleaner mobility.

Spain’s electrification efforts continue to grow, with operational charging points

reaching 35,698 in the second quarter of 2024. However, a rise in non-operational points has been noted, with 9,145 currently out of service. The ultra-fast charging network has expanded to 2,412 points, though it still represents just 6.7% of the total.

One key achievement of the INCIT-EV project in Zaragoza is an inductive charging system for electric taxis, which provides up to 50 km of range in just ten minutes, offering a safe and efficient solution for urban vehicle fleets.

Gary Lineker pokes fun at rumours over his Match of the Day future

Gary Lineker playfully teased Match of the Day fans during his opening monologue amid ongoing speculation that it might be his last appearance on the BBC’s flagship football show. Earlier in the day, he was seen catching a train ahead of Saturday’s program, which highlighted narrow victories for title contenders Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, along with Brentford’s 5-3 win over Wolves.

This week, MailOnline reported on an email circulating that suggested management was preparing a statement to announce Lineker’s departure after 25 years on the show. On Saturday night, Lineker humorously addressed the growing rumors about his future, jokingly stating, “Seven matches on the way, and it’s my final show... before the international break.”

The email circulating purportedly comes from the broadcaster’s director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, and appears to include a statement regarding the former England striker’s exit from the iconic show. The authenticity of this email has not been verified, but the BBC maintains that Lineker remains contracted until the end of the season.

When approached by MailOnline, a BBC spokesperson commented, “We have nothing to announce, and we have not agreed next steps with regard to his contract. He is on contract

until the end of the season.”

The speculation surrounding Lineker’s future comes after boxing promoter Frank Warren criticized his views on immigration. Lineker was suspended from Match of the Day shortly after he posted a series of anti-Conservative tweets on March 7, 2023. He described the government’s crackdown on migrants as “immeasurably cruel” and drew comparisons to Nazi Germany, a move that some argued violated the BBC’s strict impartiality rules. Lineker, the BBC’s highestpaid star with an annual salary of £1.35 million, later returned to his role after colleagues boycotted the flagship show in solidarity with him.

Warren, 72, expressed his disapproval of Lineker’s remarks regarding the government’s asylum policy, saying in an interview with the Telegraph, “I didn’t agree with Gary Lineker last year when he put out that tweet about the Conservatives’ asylum policy, saying it was similar to 1930s Germany. Seriously, what the f*** are you talking about? Nazi Germany? We’re allowing people in, not taking their property off them.”

He continued, “We’re a welcoming country. But we should be welcoming legal immigrants, making them go through the process. This illegal dimension is changing the dynamics around schools, housing, hospitals. It’s totally unacceptable.”

Frank Bruno undergoes hospital scans

Boxing legend Frank Bruno is currently undergoing scans in the hospital amid concerns about a potential “slow decline” in his brain health. Medical professionals are investigating whether the former WBC heavyweight champion has su ered long-term damage from the numerous blows he received during his 14-year boxing career.

At 62 years old, Bruno is regarded as one of the most respected British ghters of his generation, having won 40 of his 45 professional bouts. However, he also experienced ve knockout defeats. His daughter, Rachel, recently shared, “We have learned that his brain might be on a slow decline. They are just doing scans and tests at the moment. Given the impact of his career and the constant blows to the head, it’s obviously probably not helped. We don’t know how fast his brain is going to decline. It’s sad, but we are a strong family, and we want to cherish these moments.”

A source close to Bruno

told The Sun, “Frank’s in a great place at the moment and feeling tter and healthier than he has in years. Each week he is attending three or four events to discuss his career and work.” They added, “All retired boxers have regular checks, and Frank is no di erent.” Bruno has previously expressed that he is simply “happy” to be alive after battling mental health issues, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. His life took a challenging turn when he was sectioned and admitted to Goodmayes Hospital, where he spent several weeks. He has been readmitted to the hospital on multiple occasions for treatment, including a notable incident in 2021 when he hit “rock bottom” during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Bruno is perhaps best known to the public for his two bouts against Mike Tyson, in 1989 and 1996, both of which he lost. His crowning achievement came in 1995 when he won the world title by defeating Oliver McCall at Wembley.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 17th of September we fished the 5thround of the Autumn cup at the El Bosquet complex in Crevillent. The weather was set fair and as no other anglers were on the complex we decided to spread out and fish four section of 4 but we did leave several pegs for pleasure anglers but only one other angler turned up. Winner on the day was Lenny Bolton from the in form peg 22. He fished both the pole and feeder to catch some decent carp and weighed 23.60kg.

In second place was Nick “ I never draw a decent peg” Bastock who after moaning like mad about peg 34 he caught steadily on both pole and feeder and weighed 21.90kg. Third spot was a very tight affair with 5 anglers within a kilo of each other. The eventual honour went to Tony Felstead who may well need some of his winnings to replace a top 3 from a pole that was broken by an fish and was never seen again. Tony weighed 14.64kg. the Autumn cup is hotting up with several anglers still in the running.
