The nal phases of the redevelopment of the seafront in Torrevieja are being con rmed and are focused on the Paseo de la Libertad. One decision that has been made clear is that the cus, palm and pines trees that de ne the characterise this central public space on the seafront, are staying.
The jury is still out on whether these will remain in the current arrangement in a row or in another con guration according to the expected pedestrian tra c. Movement along the Paseo will
change completely with the elimination of the current tra c avenue and access focused on the opening to the harbour and the new leisure area.
Currently there are now around thirty specimens, which were planted when the current promenade was built half a century ago , as well as date palms, Mexican fan palms and pines.
The possibility of removing one of the few areas of the tall, shady trees had generated
controversy and annoyance in the community. The cus trees are a reference point in the local landscape and provide shelter for thousands of birds at di erent times of the year. It is one of the few trees providing shade that can be found on the front line in the middle of summer.
The works to extend the Agamed ood collector saw three of the trees relocated. The operation has also a ected several palm trees and a pine tree in the middle strip of the promenade. Several palm trees were also removed with the construction of the provisional roundabout at the port entrance. But the local government has now guaranteed the rest will all stay.
The return of the fair
In high season, the fairground o ers around 80 recreational rides and attractions of all kinds.
visitor to drive there, although free parking is guaranteed. Last winter was particularly hard due to the lack of customers.
The government team is also working to ensure that the fairground returns to the port area next summer. The attraction was moved two years ago to the market area of Antonio Soria Park due to the works being carried out at the port. Now the idea is for the fair to return to its original location in a suitable area on a provisional basis, until the nal redevelopment.
During these two long years, the fairground workers’ income has been reduced by the new location, which is outside the centre of Torrevieja and requires
The fair had to leave its traditional location because the construction of the underground car park for the new leisure area could endanger the stability of the adjacent land where many of the attractions were located. The bulk of the work on the shopping centre is now nished and the internal road between the Customs O ce and Marina Salinas-Hombre del Mar will be done in the coming weeks. With this infrastructure nished, the provisional adaptation for the fair will be carried out but in a smaller space, because it will also house the hippie stalls.
Cyclist found in canal was British
The body discovered last Friday in the Transfer Canal in Orihuela Costa has been identified as a 66-year-old British man. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 8 a.m. when the body was spotted floating in the canal, a popular area for walkers and cyclists.
Authorities initially investigated the possibility of foul play or a traffic accident, but an autopsy confirmed the man died of natural causes, likely a heart attack.
The discovery prompted a
coordinated response from the Civil Guard, Orihuela Local Police, and the Provincial Fire Brigade, who worked together to retrieve the body.
An initial examination at the scene found no signs of violence, and the subsequent autopsy ruled out any criminal involvement.
The man, dressed in cycling attire, was found near his bicycle, suggesting he was one of the many enthusiasts who frequent the canal’s scenic paths. The canal area is a well-used route, connecting
the La Pedrera reservoir with the Campo de Cartagena over a stretch of more than 60 kilometres. While the canal paths remain open to cyclists and pedestrians, vehicle access has been restricted by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) to preserve the area.
This tragic incident has saddened local residents who frequently use the canal paths for recreation and short cuts between areas.
Elderly most at risk through DANA
Nearly half of the 216 people who died in the catastrophic floods that struck Valencia at the end of October were aged 70 or older, according to a police analysis. The disaster, which claimed 224 lives across Spain, is now the country’s deadliest flood event in decades, with Valencia bearing the brunt of the devastation.
Among the victims in Valencia, 104 were aged over 70, including 15 over the age of 90. Gender-wise, the fatalities included 131 men and 85 women. The region’s ageing population was particularly vulnerable, as surging waters
overwhelmed care facilities, particularly in hard-hit towns like Paiporta. A breakdown of nationalities shows the majority of those who died in Valencia were Spaniards (190), followed by smaller numbers of foreign nationals: nine Romanians, four Moroccans, four Chinese, and two Britons. Other victims hailed from Ecuador, Venezuela, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Tunisia, Colombia, and Paraguay, regional legal authorities confirmed.
The floods, triggered by torrential rainfall, caused widespread destruction across
eastern Spain, including Valencia and Alicante. The storm system dumped record-breaking amounts of rain, cutting off towns, sweeping away vehicles, and leaving care homes and communities ill-prepared for the deluge.
Although the Spanish meteorological agency Aemet deactivated all red weather warnings for Valencia and Malaga by Thursday as the storm weakened, orange-level alerts remain in effect in parts of Andalusia, Alicante, and Valencia. Areas such as Seville, Huelva, and Cadiz are still at risk, with
significant rainfall of up to 30 mm forecast in some regions.
“Red warnings have been deactivated in the provinces of Malaga and Valencia,” Aemet stated, adding, “Orange warnings remain active due to very heavy rain in parts of Huelva, Cadiz, Seville, Alicante, and Valencia.”
As Valencia begins to recover, the disaster has underscored the vulnerability of ageing populations and the urgent need for improved flood prevention and emergency response measures.
Urgent action on climate called for at UN Summit amid devastating disasters
More than two dozen world leaders took the stage at the United Nations’ annual climate summit to deliver urgent calls for action, as they shared increasingly alarming accounts of climate impacts devastating their nations. Leaders from some of the hardesthit countries painted a grim picture, describing rsthand experiences of extreme weather events tied to climate change.
The summit, a key forum for advancing global climate policy, saw leaders from the High Ambition Coalition—a bloc of nations pushing for aggressive climate action—condemn major carbon-emitting countries for their reluctance to bear responsibility. They highlighted what they described as the “inverted morality” of wealthy nations whose actions heavily impact smaller, vulnerable countries that have the most to lose.
European leaders joined in expressing concern over the climate crisis on their own continent.
Croatia’s Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, emphasised the urgency of action in Europe, particularly in Mediterranean countries already su ering from catastrophic weather. “Over the past year, catastrophic oods in Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and southern Croatia have shown the devastating impact of rising temperatures,” he said. “The Mediterranean, one of the most vulnerable regions, calls for urgent action.”
Albania’s Prime Minister, Edi
Rama, voiced frustration over the slow pace of global climate action. Pointing to the absence of some world leaders at the summit, Rama noted a troubling disconnect between promises and real commitment. “I was watching the silent TV screens in the leaders’ lounge,” he said. “People there eat, drink, meet, and take photos together while images of voiceless speeches from leaders play on and on in the background. To me, this seems exactly like what happens in the real world: life goes on with old habits, while our speeches, full of good words about ghting climate change, change nothing.”
Rama added that, though hope may feel scarce, it is essential for the climate ght. “What is happening in Europe and around the world today doesn’t leave much room for optimism, though optimism is the only way of survival,” he said.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose country su ered severe heat waves and drought this summer, called for a realistic approach to climate policy that addresses economic trade-o s. “We need to ask hard questions about a path that goes very fast, at the expense of our competitiveness, and a path that goes much slower, but allows our industry to adapt and thrive,” he said, stressing that Europe needs to balance rapid action with the need for industry to adjust to new standards.
Amid the calls for urgent measures, Irish Environment
Minister Eamon Ryan injected a note of optimism, pointing to the resilience of the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Ryan asserted that the treaty “still lives” and suggested that countries opting out of climate commitments would ultimately fall behind as others advance their economies by embracing green transitions.
Framework
As the conference continues, negotiators are racing to nalise a framework detailing nancial commitments from developed nations to help developing countries adapt to climate change and transition to renewable energy. An initial draft agreement released this week outlines multiple pathways for reaching consensus on funding levels and mechanisms, re ecting a range of options that negotiators will work to narrow down by the summit’s conclusion.
David Waskow, director of international climate action at the World Resources Institute, described the preliminary 34page draft as inclusive of “all of the options on the table,” indicating a critical negotiation phase ahead.
The stakes are high as the conference pushes forward, with leaders hoping to lock in more than words—and chart a path toward climate stability for future generations.

Mercadona boss to give millions to workers and businesses affected by the DANA
Juan Roig, president of supermarket giant Mercadona, has announced a sweeping aid package for employees and local businesses impacted by the catastrophic ‘Dana’ oods that struck southeastern Spain two weeks ago. Roig has committed up to €50,000 in relief funds for each of Mercadona’s workers who su ered major losses in the disaster, on top of government aid already available.
Mercadona stated that it will distribute a total of €40 million among a ected employees to help them avoid “starting from scratch.”
The funds will be disbursed on 21st November and will cover damages to homes and vehicles. Speci cally, employees whose homes were completely destroyed or heavily damaged will receive €50,000. Those with signi cant losses to furniture will be eligible for €25,000, while those who
have lost smaller belongings will receive €5,000. For vehicle losses, Mercadona will provide €15,000 for cars, €5,000 for motorbikes, and €500 for other forms of transport such as scooters and bicycles.
In a related move, Roig’s entrepreneurship and innovation hub, Marina de Empresas, has launched a €25 million initiative named ‘Alcem-se’ to support small businesses, startups, and self-employed workers a ected by the oods. The platform aims to rapidly reinvigorate the local economy and minimize permanent closures among impacted businesses.
The €40 million in worker support is separate from the €25 million designated for businesses, bringing Mercadona’s total relief commitment to €65 million.
Through the Alcem-se platform, businesses with up to 15 employees can apply for aid by lling out a form
that details their speci c needs. Each application will be reviewed individually, with assistance ranging from expert consultations to direct nancial grants of up to €10,000. These grants will be non-refundable, aiming to provide a lifeline for small companies at risk of closure.
Alcem-se will also serve as a coordination point for various relief e orts launched by local organisations over the past two weeks. The initiative aims to bring together resources, nancial aid, and technical support to assist businesses in recovering from the economic shock of the oods.
Mercadona’s comprehensive relief e orts underscore a commitment to support both employees and the broader economic community as Valencia and surrounding areas work to rebuild in the wake of one of the region’s worst natural disasters in recent memory.
A rich tradition in Tarragona !
In our series on Spanish wine suppliers and Spanish wines, we now move to Tarragona.
We visit the Family “de Muller”
Founded in 1851 by Don Augusto de Muller and Ruinart de Brimont from a well-known family of winemakers of Alsatian origin, who saw in the province of Tarragona the potential that the Greek colonies in Spain and later the Roman Empire could appreciate in their time, in the imperial Tarraco, the capital of Hispania Citerior.
For four generations, the company belonged to the De Muller family and grew into one of the pioneering companies in both commercial and technological elds.
The rst Cold Room in Spain was installed at an industrial level and was mainly intended for mass wines, with this specialty being papal suppliers from Pius X to John XXIII.
Since June 1995
The Muller SA belongs to the Martorell family, Catalan businessmen who are concerned with achieving the highest quality of our wines, respecting the tradition that has been part of the
company’s heritage for decades.
Early 1996
The Muller SA moved its facilities to a new winery surrounded by vineyards on the estate “Mas de Valls” in Reus (Tarragona), a region considered particularly favorable for the cultivation of noble grape varieties. Modern production equipment, stainless steel tanks, American and French oak foudres and bocoyes, as well as oak barrels of various origins, are part of our wineries. Wineries with a capacity of 4 million liters where DO Tarragona wines are made from the almost 200 hectares of own vineyards where white grape varieties
such as Macabeo, Muscat de Alejandria, Sauvignon Blanco, Garnacha Blanca and Chardonnay are grown; and red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Pinot Noir.

Alicante-Elche Airport breaks annual passenger record
Alicante-Elche Airport has set a new record for annual passenger tra c, reaching 15.9 million travellers by the end of October 2024, surpassing last year’s record of 15.75 million with two months still to go. October alone saw nearly 1.8 million passengers, a 13.3% increase over the previous year, according to gures released by airport operator Aena.
The strong growth re ects a 16.5% rise in passenger tra c from January to October, aided by a 14.9% increase in ights. A total of 99,302 ights operated through the
airport over the 10-month period, supporting AlicanteElche’s role as a key hub for international travel.
International travellers made up the majority of October’s gures, with 1.57 million passengers arriving from abroad. The United Kingdom continued to be the leading market, contributing 594,284 travellers, followed by the Netherlands (114,560), Germany (106,688), Belgium (89,848), and Norway (81,769).
The record-breaking gures are expected to bolster calls from the Valencian government for a second
runway, a proposal that the Spanish Transport Ministry has so far opposed, instead supporting the addition of a second terminal to manage the growing tra c. Meanwhile, in a bid to expand Alicante-Elche’s international reach, the Valencian Tourist Minister is scheduled to attend a travel conference in Florida next month to explore the potential for a new transatlantic route to New York, aiming to further enhance connectivity for the bustling airport

Civil Guard dismantles smash-andgrab criminal group targeting public establishments
In the “Royma” operation, the Civil Guard successfully dismantled a criminal gang specializing in smash-andgrab robberies targeting public establishments across the Levante region.
The investigation was launched following a robbery at an optician’s store in Guardamar del Segura, where three suspects, aged 19 to 30, stole goods valued at over 35,000 euros. O cers identi ed the suspects after nding a mobile phone left behind by one of the perpetrators, which led to the arrest of the gang members.
During the operation, authorities also conducted a search of a residence in Madrid, uncovering key evidence that linked the suspects to a total of eight robberies in establishments across Alicante, Murcia, and Castellón. The group
operated with a high level of organization, assigning speci c roles to each member. They initially stole high-end vehicles to carry out the smash-and-grab raids, later abandoning these vehicles in Madrid. In some instances, they used re extinguishers to create a dust barrier, complicating police pursuit.
The group meticulously planned each robbery. They conducted surveillance to ensure a viable escape route, then targeted the establishments
in the early morning hours when activity was low, minimizing risk.
The detained individuals face charges of belonging to a criminal organization, robbery, motor vehicle theft, and theft. The operation was coordinated by the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of Alicante, the Territorial Team of the Judicial Police in Guardamar del Segura, with support from the Getafe Company and the Main Post of Guardamar del Segura.
VISIT THE ICONIC ARCHES AT CASTELL DE CASTELLS
In the province of Alicante, nestled in a picturesque natural environment, there is a spectacular natural formation that is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. Known as Els Arcs de Castell de Castells, they are two giant natural stone arches of limestone rock that have been the product of erosion for thousands of years. It all started more than 30 million years ago, when the region was then covered by the sea. At that time, carbonate sediments were deposited which later transformed into large rocks. Later, it was the action of water and wind, together with
the impact of suspended particles that eroded the limestone rock into two large cavities whose walls connect to each other forming a natural arch in one. This breathtaking circular route takes about two hours and includes some gravel pathways and steep climbs, not recommended for those with reduced mobility. The starting point can be found at KM7 of the CV-752 between Tárbena and Castell de Castells, where there are ample parking places available.

GBP
In a widely expected move, the Bank of England cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 4.75% last Thursday 7th November. This was the year’s second base rate cut after dropping from 5.25% to 5% in August.
With the US Dollar bolstered by the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, the GBP/USD exchange rate had initially dipped by around 1.5%, but it recovered following the Bank of England’s decision. The BoE suggestion that Labour’s recent Autumn Budget could be in ationary over time contributed to the rally. As traders concluded that interest rates might not drop as quickly as previously thought, the value of GBP was boosted.
However, the strength of the dollar has continually pushed GBP/USD lower over the past week. UK GDP was released this morning, coming in below expectations at 0.1% quarterly growth, which saw the pound weaken further. GBP/USD has now dropped to a 5-month low, and GBP/EUR has also slipped further away from its recent high.
EUR
In a surprise announcement last week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz removed his nance minister, undermining the governing coalition. Government insiders thought that Donald Trump’s return to the White House might force leaders of the
Social Democrats, Greens, and the FDP to recognise the need for unity. However, the discord and rancour in Berlin appeared to show no signs of subsiding, and the collapse of the coalition government has thrown Europe’s largest economy into turmoil.
Chancellor Scholz later announced that his government would face a con dence vote on the 16th December, with parliamentary elections also brought forward from the scheduled date in September to 23rd February. This news contributed to the Euro’s existing problems, with EUR/USD languishing at its lowest level since June and GBP/EUR hitting a 31-month high, a level seen only twice since 2016.
While it would be nice to suggest that the era of uncertainty is over and plain sailing lies ahead, the level of uncertainty for people and businesses across the globe seems to be increasing. Any further destabilisation of the eurozone will likely have a signi cantly negative impact on the Euro.

Orihuela health department launches first on-site flu and COVID vaccination point for municipal staff
For the first time, Orihuela City Council has established an onsite flu and COVID-19 vaccination point to protect its municipal staff. This initiative was praised by Councillor for Health Irene Celdrán, who emphasized that the goal is “to make it easier for municipal staff to receive flu and COVID vaccinations by providing a convenient vaccination point within the town hall itself.”
On Tuesday, staff from various municipal departments were vaccinated at this new point, thanks to a partnership between the Department of Health and the Rabaloche Health Center. Health center personnel traveled to the town hall to administer vaccinations
to employees who opted in.
“This is the first time we’ve organized an in-house vaccination point, and due to the positive response, we plan to do it again next year, ideally at the start of the vaccination campaign to allow for greater
coverage,” Councillor Celdrán explained. She expressed her gratitude to the Rabaloche Health Center “for its cooperation and dedication in ensuring that municipal employees have easy access to flu and COVID-19 protection.”
Los Montesinos to open first dog park in early 2025
Los Montesinos is set to open its rst dog park in early 2025, with construction beginning this week in the La Herrada residential area. The park, covering 1,500 square meters, will feature a range of amenities, including seating and nearly a dozen play structures speci cally designed for dogs. The project, budgeted at approximately 36,000 euros, is expected to be completed within a
three-month timeline.
Mayor José Manuel Butrón stated that the dog park represents a ful lled promise to residents who have long requested a dedicated recreational space for their pets. Butrón emphasized the importance of animal welfare, noting the increase in “animal awareness at both social and institutional levels.” He a rmed that the Los Montesinos council will
continue implementing policies to promote animal protection and welfare, highlighting the town’s existing Department of Animal Welfare, led by Councillor Isabel García.
The new park aims to provide a safe and enjoyable space for residents and their dogs, fostering a community where pets are valued and can freely exercise and socialize.
Skipper reported for attempting to sell nearly two tons of undersized anchovies at Torrevieja fish market
The Civil Guard, as part of its Annual Plan for the Comprehensive Control of Fishing Activities (PACIAP), has reported a fishing boat captain for allegedly attempting to sell almost two tons of immature anchovies, in violation of marine sustainability regulations. This action underscores the importance of ensuring compliance with size regulations to protect marine resources and ecosystems.
The investigation, led by SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard), began months prior when authorities received intelligence about a fishing vessel suspected of selling undersized fish. After confirming the information, SEPRONA initiated close surveillance of the vessel’s activities.
Last Tuesday, SEPRONA’s patrol in Monóvar was alerted to a possible
unloading of immature fish at the Torrevieja fish market.
By the time agents arrived, the vessel had already departed after the market refused to accept the catch due to non-compliance with marketing regulations.
Surveillance efforts revealed that the captain then headed to the San Pedro del Pinatar fish market in Murcia, where officers observed
the vessel docking and suspected that the illegal fish had been unloaded.
In collaboration with an inspector from Murcia’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, SEPRONA agents conducted a thorough inspection of the San Pedro del Pinatar market. They discovered a closed storage chamber containing seven
undocumented buckets of anchovies. A market employee confirmed that the buckets belonged to the investigated vessel and, due to their small size, were designated for fishmeal production. An analysis of the buckets revealed an average of 146.7 specimens per kilogram, significantly above the maximum legal limit of 125 specimens per kilogram,
leading to the seizure of 1,901 kilograms of undersized anchovies—Alicante’s largest seizure of its kind.
The investigation also found that the captain had only reported basic port-to-port movements to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food in Murcia, omitting details about the undersized fish in his cargo. This lack of transparency suggested possible intent to sell the fish outside of legal markets. Given the fish’s high perishability, the authorities ordered the catch to be immobilized and scheduled for destruction. The captain now faces fines that could reach up to 60,000 euros.
In a statement, the Civil Guard emphasized its dedication to enforcing fishing regulations to preserve marine resources, ensure ecosystem balance, and uphold the integrity of the legal market chain.
Expanded video surveillance network brings 23 new cameras to Pilar de la Horadada’s Coast
An additional 23 surveillance cameras have been installed in Pilar de la Horadada, enhancing the city’s public security network. Councillor for Modernisation, Nieves Moreno, announced that this expansion focuses primarily on access points to the coastal area and is part of a project with a budget of €263,000. With this update, the total number of cameras across the municipality has risen to 55, underscoring the City Council’s ongoing commitment to extending its surveillance coverage.
The City Council’s next phase will introduce license plate recognition technology on public roads to strengthen monitoring capabilities. Funded under the
Plan for Promoting Innovative Territories by the Regional Ministry of Innovation, this initiative follows a 2022 project where the council invested €170,000 to install 31 digital cameras with advanced features, such as license plate reading,
360-degree views, and artificial intelligence to distinguish between people and vehicles. These improvements address earlier issues with the city’s initial 13 cameras, which had been inactive for years due to lack of maintenance, as Moreno noted.
Torrevieja deploys drones to monitor mosquitoes and other pests
A common complaint on the City Council’s social networks concerns the persistent issue of mosquito infestations, particularly after rainfall, often accompanied by calls for improved lighting and sidewalks in residential areas. This year, with the previous pest control contract expiring, the City Council renewed the service. In March, the contract was opened for
bidding with a base budget of nearly one million euros and was subsequently awarded in July for €725,395, covering pest control e orts for the next ve years. This budget also includes upgrades to the eet of pest control vehicles.
Last Tuesday, Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, alongside Councillor for Health and Pest Control Diana Box, municipal biologist Juan Antonio

As of November 5, 2024, almost a thousand minors in Spain’s Region of Murcia have been identi ed as at risk or subjected to abuse, according to Conchita Ruiz, the regional Minister of Social Policy, Families, and Equality. Reporting at a press conference in anticipation of Children’s Rights Day on November 20, Ruiz disclosed that 978 cases have been registered so far this year, marking a slight decrease compared to previous years. In 2022, there were 1,076 cases, and in 2023, cases surged to 1,295—a rise of approximately 20%.
The trend in 2024 suggests a potential decline in reported cases, though nal gures for the year remain to be seen. Of the 668 cases reported as of this point in 2024, most involved neglect, predominantly a ecting adolescents aged 13 to 15. Gender distribution among victims is relatively balanced, with 52% boys

and 48% girls. Education and law enforcement agencies provided the bulk of referrals, with types of abuse ranked by frequency as neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. This data highlights ongoing concerns in child welfare within the region, emphasizing the need for vigilance and proactive measures from both authorities and communities.
Passenger arrested for urinating in aisle on Ryanair flight from UK to Spain
A passenger was arrested for urinating in the aisle on a Ryanair flight from East Midlands Airport in the UK to Tenerife South Airport, with additional passengers reportedly acting disruptively. The flight deck crew alerted local authorities before landing due to the behavior onboard.
The incident took place on flight FR3152, which departed on Monday, November 4, at 6:29 am for the four-and-a-halfhour journey to Tenerife. Ryanair confirmed that “a small group of passengers” had been disruptive, though specific behaviors were not detailed beyond the urination incident. Some sources described the disturbance as “serious.”
This is not an isolated case for Ryanair, which has faced similar disruptions before. In August, CEO Michael O’Leary noted that alcohol and drug consumption prior to boarding has led

Meet the man from the Prudential
Seagate Wealth Management hosted another very successful Finance & Tax Forum at the La Laguna hotel in Ciudad Quesada recently.
Lorraine Howard from Seagate Wealth Management opened the event and welcomed all the guest speakers, the Seagate team and all the people who turned out in the rather disappointing weather.
Lorraine explained how they work with Prudential International to provide tax compliance bonds for Spanish tax residents. She also briefly mentioned how Seagate can help with pension transfers and managing existing private pensions. We were fortunate to have Edny Van Den Broek from Prudential International as one of the guest speakers at the event. Edny spoke about the products available to Spanish tax residents and how the International Prudence
Bond is an ideal option for those people who need to prove they have sufficient funds for the Non-Lucrative Visa.
Susan Longland from Currencies Direct outlined how they can not only beat Spanish banks with their transfer rates, but how you could dispense with a Spanish bank account. The new
Currencies Direct MultiCurrency Debit Card was also discussed in detail. Mark McMiIllan, the relocation specialist from Sun Lawyers was on hand to outline the process of obtaining the Non-Lucrative Visa and how they can help you with every part of the process, including the renewal options at years
2 and 4.
After the presentations, the speakers stayed to talk with the attendees and to offer followup appointments to those who wanted more personal advice. The refreshments offered by the hotel also went down very well, so all in all it

If you missed out this time, then the team will back again in March and we will advertise the event widely and look forward to welcoming you to an informative and interesting event.
The gift of sound: why hearing aids are especially important this Christmas
As the festive season draws near, families across the country are getting ready for Christmas gatherings filled with laughter, conversation, and holiday cheer. But for those who experience hearing loss, the joy of these gatherings can be diminished, often leaving them feeling isolated and overwhelmed in social settings. This year, hearing aids are proving to be an invaluable tool to help those with hearing difficulties reconnect with loved ones and fully enjoy the spirit of the season.
Christmas gatherings are uniquely challenging for people with hearing loss. The festive hubbub of clinking glasses, multiple conversations, and background holiday music can make it difficult to follow conversations, even for those with minimal hearing impairments.
Hearing aids can be a gamechanger, helping wearers tune into conversations and filter out background noise. Many modern hearing aids come with
advanced features like noise cancellation, directional microphones, and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to experience clear and focused sound even in crowded, noisy environments.
For family members, hearing aids bring the chance to connect more fully with loved ones, particularly elderly relatives who may have experienced a gradual loss of hearing over the
years. For seniors, hearing aids can reduce social isolation, a common issue among those with hearing impairments, by keeping them engaged and involved in family activities. Not only does this make family gatherings more enjoyable, but studies have shown that improved social engagement through hearing aids can also have long-term benefits for cognitive health, including
reducing the risk of dementia and depression.
Another advantage of hearing aids at Christmas is their ability to enhance the sounds of the season. From the carols on the radio to the laughter of grandchildren, hearing aids can open up a rich world of sound that might otherwise be missed. Users can enjoy the subtleties of seasonal music, the warmth in a family member’s
voice, or the delight of hearing children open their gifts—all contributing to a fuller, richer holiday experience. For those considering hearing aids or upgrading their existing devices, now might be the ideal time. Advances in hearing technology have made modern devices more discreet, with customisable features that allow users to adjust their hearing aid settings based on specific environments. Here at Protea Wellness Audiology provides support and fitting services to ensure a smooth transition, so new users can quickly adapt and enjoy the benefits without a extensive learning curve.
This Christmas, hearing aids offer the gift of connection, inclusion, and rediscovered joy. Whether for yourself or a loved one, investing in hearing health can transform the holiday experience, making this season a time to truly hear— and celebrate—the sounds of Christmas.

Let s Rock cele rates its first irthday
Let’s Rock, Quesada’s newest choir, celebrated its first birthday by launching Silverstones’ fundraiser for Valencia on Sunday 17th November. Well over 1000 euros was raised during the all day show, which included performances from a range of local Artists.
In front of an audience of over seventy people, Let’s Rock showcased their repertoire with songs from ELO, Queen, Rolling Stones, Status Quo and Sam Cooke to name a few. The event ended with an update from the Civil Protection Team in Almoradi about the current situation in the flood zones and what work was being done to help. Whilst Let’s Rock took a last minute break from their preparations for their upcoming Christmas concerts to accept the invitation to take part in the fundraiser, they are now firmly back on track for the four concerts programmed before the end of 2024. Details are in the What’s On section of this newspaper. Make sure you get to hear Let’s Rock by booking your places at these free events by contacting Sarah on WhatApp 0034 650 054 467 or emailing her on singinggroup@outlook. com. Let’s Rock - the Costa Blanca’s feelgood choir!

e study highlights alcohol consumption trends among the Spaniards
The study by Aegon highlights the normalization and widespread consumption of alcohol in Spain, revealing concerning patterns that could have signi cant public health implications. Here are the key takeaways: High prevalence: Over 81% of Spaniards have consumed alcohol in the past year, and only a small fraction, less than 20%, abstain entirely.
Regular drinking: Twothirds (67%) of Spaniards identify as regular drinkers, with consumption ranging from daily (13.3%) to weekly (27.5%).
Occasional and sporadic drinking: 15% drink occasionally (every two weeks or monthly), while 18% have drunk alcohol at least once in the past year. Most people spend modestly on alcohol (under €50 per month), but 25% spend between €50 and over €200 monthly, suggesting a segment of heavy consumers.
Gender and age: Men are more likely to drink than women, and middle-aged (40–55) and young adults (26–40) dominate the consumer pro le. However, alcohol consumption
remains high among the 18–25 age group, with 76% having drunk alcohol in the past year.
Alcohol consumption is more common among the employed and those with higher education quali cations. University graduates are signi cantly more likely to drink (86.5%) compared to individuals with only primary education (62.3%).
Risk Factors and Implications
Stress correlation: Regular drinking is strongly associated with experiencing stress, suggesting it may be used as a coping mechanism.
Health risks: The study reiterates the established link between alcohol
consumption and severe diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular issues.
The ndings indicate that alcohol consumption is deeply ingrained in Spanish culture, transitioning from an occasional indulgence to an everyday habit for many. While most drink moderately, the normalization of regular consumption presents a major challenge for public health. Awareness campaigns and targeted interventions, especially among high-risk groups like stressed individuals and young adults, may be essential to address these trends.

Types of Hair Porosity
tend to be the best for beginning laser hair removal:
1. Reduced Sun Exposure
Laser hair removal works best when your skin is at its natural tone, as tanned or sun-exposed skin can increase the risk of side e ects like hyperpigmentation. Autumn and winter allow you to avoid sun exposure, which helps with both treatment safety and e cacy.
2. Time to Complete a multiple sessions Before Summer
Laser hair removal requires multiple sessions—typically 6 to 8 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. Starting in autumn or winter allows you to nish or get close to nishing your sessions by the time summer arrives, so you can enjoy smoother skin during warmer months when you’re more likely to show skin.
3. More Comfortable PostTreatment Care
After each session, you’ll need to avoid heat, exercise, and sweating for about 24-48 hours. The cooler weather makes it easier to follow.
Key Points for Starting Laser Hair Removal:
Plan Ahead: You’ll need several months to complete the treatment
engagement ring that I never saw, then he reeled me in and asked me to lend him money...several thousands of euros; like an idiot I gave him the money because I thought I was in a relationship with him. In short, I will never see that money again. He has now dropped me like a stone and doesn’t answer my calls.
The dating game can be difficult at any time. Your uncut email tells me how this man played on your sympathies; you thought you knew him, but some men are in for the long con. If anyone asks you for a large amount of money; or even if you notice small things like the fact he rarely pays for a meal, or, has forgotten his wallet, or a client hasn’t paid him etc... beware. You have learned to your detriment that giving this man thousands of euros had led to him ignoring you. You might have some redress if you have a receipt for the money, or some evidence of the loan; perhaps there is a conversation on messaging where he admits to borrowing money from you. It would be worth seeing a Lawyer.
I was flattered by a man who regularly came into the restaurant where I work, with his parents. One day he told me his mother had died but he continued to come in with his aged father. I noticed how his father always paid, even when his mother was alive, and that he would always finish eating his mother’s food as well as his own; then he would leave them. I didn’t think too much about it... until much later. He was always cracking jokes, but I was also confused because there would be times when this fella would go cold on me. Sometimes he and his father would just sit there, quietly arguing and looking miserable. One day he came in and told me his father had died. From then, he pursued me, but he treated me very badly; arranging dates and then cancelling... turning up at the restaurant without money, then his card would not work so that I had to pay. I am writing as a warning to other women, that there are men out there who are frauds. Over several months I continually had sob stories from him; he promised me an WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. sessions for the best long-term results.
Avoid Tanning: Make sure your skin isn’t recently sun-exposed or tanned before treatments.
Stay Consistent: For lasting results, follow through with each booked session as recommended.
Here’s a comprehensive list of dos and don’ts to follow before your laser hair removal treatment to ensure you get the best results safely and e ectively.
Dos Before Laser Hair Removal
1. Do Shave the Treatment Area: Shave the area 24 hours before your appointment, as the laser targets the hair follicles
2. Do Inform Your Technician of
Hair porosity is determined by how well your hair absorbs and retains water and hair products. The structure of your hair’s cuticle (the outer layer of the hair shaft) in uences porosity. Hair cuticles are comprised of overlapping scales that open and close to absorb and seal in moisture.12
If the cuticles of your hair are very smooth and have few gaps, less water can penetrate the deeper layers, and less water can escape. This indicates that your hair is less porous. If there are gaps between the scales, more moisture can get through, making the hair more porous.21
Knowing how porous your hair is can help you understand why your hair behaves the way it does and how to take care of it. Below are the di erent levels of hair porosity and how they a ect hair’s behavior.
Medications:
Some medications, especially antibiotics, can make skin more sensitive to the laser. Always disclose any new medications, including overthe-counter treatments, supplements, or topicals.
3. Do Avoid Tanning:
Make sure your skin is its natural tone; avoid tanning, self-tanners, or bronzers for at least 2-4 weeks before treatment.
4. Do Schedule Sessions Regularly:
Laser hair removal requires multiple sessions (usually 4-8), spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Consistency is crucial for best results.
5. Do Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing:
On the day of your treatment, wear loose clothing to avoid irritation over the treated area after your session.
6. Do Plan for Aftercare: After each treatment, you’ll need to avoid exercise, heat, and sun exposure for a few days.
Don’ts Before Laser Hair Removal
1. Don’t Wax, Pluck, or Use Depilatory Creams:
2. Don’t Apply Lotions, Deodorants, or Oils: Avoid using any lotions, creams, deodorants, or oils on the day of your treatment, as these can interfere with the laser.
3. Don’t Use Sunbeds or Tan Outdoors: Exposure to UV light increases the risk of burns and pigmentation issues. Avoid sunbathing or tanning beds for at least 2-4 weeks before each session.
4. Don’t Take Light-Sensitizing Medications:
Certain medications, such as some antibiotics and acne treatments (like Accutane), can make skin sensitive to light. Avoid these for several weeks if possible, but consult your doctor if unsure.
6. Don’t Expose Skin to Heat Before and After: Avoid hot showers, saunas, and
intense workouts for at least 24 hours before and after each session. Heat can irritate the treated area.
7. Don’t Apply Makeup on the Treated Area Immediately After: If you’re having facial hair treated, skip makeup for 24 hours after the session to avoid irritation.
Following these dos and don’ts can help you achieve smoother, long-lasting results while minimizing potential side e ects. Tips for staying mentally strong during uncertain times
Recent oods in the Valencia region have added another layer of stress to an already challenging time for many. Living in Orihuela , presently untouched by this tragedy but with various weather alerts coping with this uncertainty can take its toll on your mental health. I am Alan and I run Therapy Partners, a dedicated mental health counselling and coaching service o ering English speaking therapists in Playa Flamenca, and we can o er guidance and support through these tough times.
We appreciate everyone adopts di erent coping strategies. Anxiety and isolation can often go hand-in-hand, especially when life becomes unpredictable. You might feel disconnected from friends or family back home or experience a lack of support locally. Here are some tips to help manage anxiety and stay connected during uncertain times:
1. Stay Connected with your Community Isolation can worsen feelings of stress and anxiety, so it’s essential to stay in touch with your
community, family, and friends. Arrange to meet up (weather permitting) or even virtually, , join local groups, or even volunteer to help others a ected by the events. I witnessed the support of people coming together when I saw this rst hand when visiting an o ce last week which was full of items to be sent to Valencia. Community support can be a vital source of comfort and strength.
2. Focus on What You Can Control
Flooding and other natural events can leave us feeling helpless. A powerful coping strategy is to focus on what’s within your control. For example, creating an emergency plan or keeping essential supplies handy can foster a sense of preparedness. Staying proactive, even in small ways, helps manage stress.
3.Practice Grounding Techniques When we’re anxious, our minds often jump ahead to “what ifs.” Practicing grounding techniques, such as deep breathing or focusing on your ve senses, can help bring you back to the

present moment. This reduces anxious thoughts and promotes a sense of calm, even in moments of uncertainty.
3. Seek Professional Support if Needed
Experiencing anxiety, sadness, or frustration is natural, especially in uncertain times. If you’re nding it hard to cope, consider speaking with a mental health professional who understands. Therapy Partners o ers counseling speci cally for the expatriate community , providing personalised support to help you navigate these feelings. You can also access support via your GP and I have listed some further links below
4. Consider Joining a Support Group
Sometimes, talking with others who understand your experiences can be especially helpful. Therapy Partners is looking to establish support groups in the new year, where expatriates can connect, share experiences, and nd comfort together. Support groups o er a valuable space to reduce isolation and learn ways to manage anxiety in a safe, welcoming environment.
If you’re nding it di cult to cope, remember its ok to ask for help Take care stay safe and our thoughts are with those families who have been a ected by these recent events.

Abbey Anglers
On Tuesday the 12th of November we fished the next round of the winter series at the El Bosquet Complex. With reports of impending doom ,danas, you name it we were getting it over the forthcoming days it was nice to see nineteen anglers turn out on what was a pleasant day weather wise.
It was decided that we would fish three sections of anglers with 7 on A1 to 7 and 12 anglers on pegs 26 to 40 which had been fishing well. Fishing or Angling to give it its correct name is a funny old game and often throws up the unexpected. It turned out that pegs 26 o 40 fished well below par and the old fancied section
of A1 to 7 was by far the best section to be in.
Winner on the day was one of our Andalucian visitors who made the long journey from Mojacar worth while. Drawn on peg 2 he fished the pole with maggots for a runaway victory weighing 27kg. In second place was Doug Hornblow who used his little method feeder with pellet on peg B1and caught mullet and carp for 20.56kg. In third place was John Waples . John fished the long pole from peg 36 with maggots and caught 10 carp for 14.73kg.
The other weights in truth are best forgotten with the section on 26 to 31 being won with a
magnificent weight of 3.16kg by none other than Mr Pastry who was sporting a rather fetching t shirt after having his blue vest surgically removed for the winter season.
Wednesdays match was a total wash out although a couple of hardy souls did fish in the rain and mud. Memberships are now being taken for the 2025 season. We are members of the Murcian federation and if anyone would like to join this friendly bunch then I can be contacted by email at iantravel@hotmail.co.uk
