Support grows for Orihuela Costa independence

The residents of the Orihuela coast are so fed up with being ignored, with the lack of investment, with the lack of services and with discriminatory treatment from the city that they are willing to demand segregation.

Locals want the area, headed by Manuel Mestre, to be given more management capacity,

and they are increasingly looking to Pilar de la Horadada as an example of how this could be achieved. Pilar ceased to be a district of Orihuela in 1986 after its own break away from Orihuela and the municipality is willing to “welcome” Orihuela Costa to join its municipality, although there are conditions.

According to the neighbourhood association Unidos por la Costa the Orihuela coast is once again talking about becoming independent from the city. “If the situation does not begin to normalise in the near future, there is a growing desire on the horizon for many residents to explore other avenues, such as segregation, that recognise the identity of Orihuela Costa,” it explains. The Association has 900 members of 39 nationalities, more than 10,000 followers on Facebook and a presence in all neighbourhoods.

In 1986, Pilar de la Horadada ceased to be a district of Orihuela, after several years of waiting. It is not insigni cant that the Orihuela coast was included in the rst outline plans of segregation. The municipality, which borders Orihuela Costa, which in turn is located 35 kilometres from Orihuela city, is still willing to take Orihuela Costa under its wing. In fact, it is believed that several meetings to discuss the possibility over the past ve years. The response of José María Pérez Sánchez (PP) has always been the same: he does not refuse but looking at the conditions under which the annexation would take

place there are questions over administrative viability and taxes, as well as it depending on the investment that would be needed to alleviate the de ciencies in services and infrastructure.

Orihuela Costa has been historically failed in the provision of basic services and in the maintenance and improvement of infrastructure such as rubbish collection, street cleaning, lighting, green areas, road condition, paving, water management, beaches, health centres, schools, social services and general citizen care.

Residents feel that they are not receiving what they deserve,

while the association that represents them feels ignored, censoring their questions in plenary sessions and not responding to requests for information or access to les that they make.

More autonomy

It believes that the Costa Council, in the hands of Manuel Mestre (Vox), needs more skills and management capacity, something that the councillor himself has requested of the Mayor. His proposal is that it should have a budgetary reinforcement and the necessary human, technical and material resources to e ciently manage the Costa’s own identity.

In a move towards more control over coastal decisions, the Association would like to see Councillor Mestre direct a technical o ce for Urban Planning (activity licenses, opening, minor and major works licenses, control of legality), another for Infrastructure (maintenance of roads, green areas, lighting, streets, beaches, new infrastructure), Street Cleaning and RSU (to plan services, contracting and other services such as Citizen Attention, Tourism, Culture , Consumption and Environment. And in close contact with the associations and residents through the District Councils.

Spain fines budget airlines for ‘abusive charging’

Spain’s Consumer A airs Ministry has issued a landmark €179 million (£149 million) ne to ve budget airlines, including Ryanair and Vueling, for what it deems abusive practices such as charging passengers for larger cabin bags. The move marks the rst time Spain has imposed such severe sanctions in the realm of consumer protection, following new enforcement powers acquired by the ministry in 2022.

The nes target Ryanair (€108 million), Vueling (€39 million), easyJet (€29 million), Norwegian (€1.6 million), and Spanish carrier Volotea (€1.2 million). The ministry also ordered the airlines to stop requiring additional payments for basic services such as bringing larger carry-on luggage or reserving seats near dependent travellers.

Spain’s Consumer A airs Ministry declared the airlines’ practices a violation of passengers’ rights, citing “disproportionate and abusive” fees for services like printing boarding passes and banning cash payments at airports. Additionally, the airlines were criticized for unclear pricing and omitting crucial information.

“This is the rst time that sanctions classi ed as very serious have been issued in the eld of consumer a airs,” the ministry

stated.

If the nes are upheld, the airlines must halt these practices in Spanish airports. The ruling also paves the way for millions of passengers to seek compensation for surcharges incurred in the past ve years. Consumer advocacy group Facua, which led the initial complaint, praised the decision, calling it a victory for travellers. Facua is now preparing a legal case to assist passengers in reclaiming fees without needing legal representation.

The airlines, however, argue that the nes threaten the business model of low-cost carriers, which rely on low base ticket prices while charging extra for optional services. Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline by passenger volume, described the sanctions as “unlawful and baseless.” CEO Michael O’Leary accused Spain’s Consumer A airs Ministry of acting out of political motivation and breaching EU regulations, which protect airlines’ autonomy to set pricing and policies.

“These nes will be overturned by EU courts,” O’Leary asserted, citing prior rulings that upheld Ryanair’s baggage policies. Ryanair’s current rules allow one small personal item free of charge but charge fees for additional or larger bags if they do not t under

the seat.

Nonsense

The Spanish Airlines Association (ALA) echoed the criticism, calling the ruling “nonsense.” Javier Gándara, ALA’s president, said airlines would appeal the nes, particularly over cabin baggage charges, though some may accept other adjustments, such as allowing cash payments for onboard purchases.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) lauded the ruling as a victory for passengers, emphasizing that basic services like carrying luggage should not incur additional charges. Facua reminded passengers they have up to ve years to le refund claims, which could signi cantly impact the industry if upheld.

This regulatory crackdown comes as Ryanair reports a dip in pro ts despite record passenger numbers. In the six months ending September, Ryanair carried 115 million passengers, up from the previous year, but its pro ts dropped by 18% to €1.79 billion due to falling ticket prices.

The nes are set to reshape the operations of budget airlines in Spain, potentially sparking broader discussions across the EU about consumer rights and lowcost airline practices.

Gender violence increases by 30 percent in Orihuela

In Orihuela, so far in 2024, the number of women seen by the Municipal Service for Attention to Victims of Gender Violence (SEMAVI) has increased. Speci cally, 180 women have been helped, 30 percent more than the previous year.

The gures were announced by the Councillor for Equality of Orihuela, Agustina Rodríguez, within the framework of the commemoration of 25-N, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

She explained that “since 2022, a progressive and unstoppable increase has been seen, which is why we must insist on the importance of eradicating gender violence due to the repercussions it has on women, as well as on their children and their extended family.”

Of the 180 women assisted, 140 accessed the comprehensive psychosocial care services on o er (psychological, social, occupational, etc.) and 40 just requested information and guidance regarding the services and resources available.

The highest incidence rates are

concentrated in the age group between 26 and 45 years (60% of women treated). However, more and more women under the age of 25 are accessing the service.

The data also show that 73.58% of the users assisted are Spanish, followed far behind by the group of women of South American nationalities (23%). And that the majority of them (55.71%) live in the city of Orihuela.

Considering the bond or relationship that victims of gender violence have with the aggressor, the data show that gender violence no longer occurs mainly within marriage, but in relationships between couples (with or without cohabitation), which represent 65% of the total.

As regards the length of the relationship, it is noteworthy that detection and recognition as a victim of gender violence, as well as the ling of a complaint in this regard, is occurring earlier and earlier. In fact, 67.14% of the victims who come to SEMAVIG have been in a relationship lasting from a few months to 6 years, which coincides with national and academic data that place the duration of the relationship at an

average of 4 years.

“One of the aspects that we must focus on and be concerned about is that 62.74% of the users who receive care at SEMAVIG have young children in their care,” said Agustina Rodríguez.

In light of all this data, the Department of Equality believes that “this reality means that we are facing a generation of women who, being better informed, feel safer and less vulnerable. It is true that awareness and knowledge are allowing them to set limits earlier, but it is also true that the recognition of control is more blurred. In this sense, digital gender violence, harassment and control through social networks, is growing exponentially, while the normalisation of substance use blurs the ability to set limits.”

On the other hand, the widespread consumption of pornography from a very early age is leading to the acquisition of sexual behaviour with a high sexist and violent component. In addition, the increase in sexual assaults that are occurring within couples is an issue that must be kept in mind, the councillor pointed out.

UN day highlights parental fears over child safety online

On the UN Day for Preventing Child Sexual Exploitation, a report revealed parents’ top concerns about their children’s internet use, highlighting fears of exposure to explicit content and encounters with online predators. The study, conducted by ECPAT, a global NGO ghting child sexual exploitation, surveyed parents in Spain, France, Poland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Online safety emerged as the primary concern in Poland, Sweden, and the Netherlands, particularly among mothers and urban parents. Parents also expressed worries about the internet’s impact on children’s sleep quality and social skills. While 73% of parents in Spain and France rated online safety as a major concern, the gure dropped to 40% in the Netherlands.

France has recently seen high-pro le cases amplifying these concerns. Last month, a man received a 25-year prison sentence for orchestrating the abuse of over 1,000 girls aged 5 to 10 via webcam between 2012 and 2021.

Though critical, fears around online bullying, harmful content, excessive screen time, and data privacy breaches ranked lower on the list. A previous ECPAT study revealed that fewer than 40% of children feel comfortable discussing online risks with their parents, citing fears of punishment, awkwardness, or a lack of

understanding. In response, many parents monitor internet usage, set limits on screen time, or use parental controls. However, fewer than 20% would consider reporting online risks to authorities or participating in community events to promote online safety.

The report also highlighted the scale of the issue, with 73 child protection NGOs urging EU lawmakers to address what they call a “child sexual abuse crisis.”

These groups, including Child Focus (Belgium), Fondation pour l’Enfance (France), and Fondazione SOS il Telefono Azzurro ETS (Italy), point to more than 100 million images and videos of child sexual abuse discovered online in 2022, with 98% depicting children under 13.

A proposed EU regulation to prevent and combat child sexual abuse has stalled amid debate over the use of encrypted message scanning. NGOs stress the urgency of tackling emerging crimes such as live-streamed abuse, AI-generated deepfake imagery, and automated grooming. They are calling for child abuse laws to be applied as stringently online as o ine.

The report underscores the pressing need for parental education, regulatory action, and international cooperation to create a safer digital environment for children.

Orihuela Costa couple robbed at gunpoint by mistake

A couple had a major scare in the Torrezenia residential area of Lomas de Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa recently after being held at gun point. The couple, who prefer to remain anonymous, suffered an assault in their home a month ago. Until now they have not wanted to go public for fear of possible repercussions but decided to go to the press to encourage and increase police patrols on the coast.

However, this was not a robbery, but what the police call “a turnaround”, when a criminal gang looks for another criminal organisation to steal drugs from. But in this case, the criminals got it wrong, and this was a case of mistaken identity.

It was 4am when the homeowner, an English primary school teacher woke up after hearing his two dogs barking nonstop. He went out onto the porch of his house and saw a person in the yard. At first he thought the intruder was trying to steal a bike, but then he noticed there were three more people - one of them in the garden, another on

top of the wall and another climbing down. They were carrying pistols and rifles and wearing balaclavas and gloves. His initial reaction was to confront them, as he still couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The gang members hit him on the head with the butt of their guns and ordered him at gunpoint to lie down on the ground.

Meanwhile, his wife, who was waiting inside the house, heard the shouts and came rushing out. What she saw was gruesome, with blood everywhere and she thought her husband was dead. The gang also hit the woman, and she needed stitches in her head, her husband needed eighteen. Both suffered bruising.

The couple were taken inside the house and made to sit on the sofa, while the four assailants ransacked the house. They asked for “hashish” and spoke in a forging language. The victims referred to another house nearby that they own but that is rented out.

Then, the attackers forced them to go out into the street at gunpoint and

show them which house, which they then entered.

Lying on the ground, they continued to call for help until they saw a car approaching, but it turned out to be a vehicle with two occupants that was part of the gang. About 50 metres away there was a van that was also involved in the incident. In total, about eight people participated in the robbery.

Once the gang had left, the couple immediately called the local police, who quickly arrived at the scene, along with the Torrevieja Civil Guard and the judicial police of Pilar de la Horadada.

What happened to this British man and his Irish wife was because the attackers mistook the house. Apart from the physical injuries, the memory of thinking they were going to be killed is still terrifying. They have decided to tell the story so that there is more police surveillance in the area, which has no regular patrols. Many residents of the coast feel abandoned, and the number of home robberies is increasing.

150 years... and dust!

In 1872, Félix Bigallet founded a liqueur and syrup factory in Lyon, Avenue de Saxe, intended for cafes, inns and the new merchants of the industrial age. The supply was then done with horse-drawn carriages.

In the early years, Félix Bigallet o ered its customers the traditional drinks of the time: Bitter, Amer, Goudron, Quinquina... Gum and grenadine syrups were consumed mixed with aperitifs to sweeten them.

He bases his fame on a new drink of which he is the inventor: Citronade, still made in the traditional way with macerated lemon peel, then distilled and supplemented with cane sugar syrup.

To expand, he founded his company in 1885 in Virieu-sur-Bourbre in Isère, the native country of the Bigallet family. The factory is located near (opposite!) the train station LyonGrenoble.Er were still horse stables: a coachman took care of the deliveries. Customer service was already in the company’s DNA!

The railway made it possible to transport wine from the South of France, sugar loaves from the West Indies, rum from Martinique, lemons from Sicily, oranges from Spain or North Africa.

In 1998, in line with its

philosophy of naturalness, Bigallet created a range of organic syrups in addition to its traditional syrup o er. Bigallet recently exported its syrups and liqueurs to the United States and to a few European countries: the authenticity, the quality of its products and the respect for artisanal processes have made the di erence and carried the colors of French know-how. high.

And today...

In 2024, the Bigallet company will employ 40 people, in Isère, on the original lands of the Bigallet family. It bases its strategy and regular development on the quality of its products, designed and manufactured according to authentic recipes

King returns to flood-hit village

Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia returned to the floodstricken village of Chiva in Valencia province, marking their second visit since devastating floods tore through the region in late October. Unlike their first visit, which was marred by angry survivors pelting them with mud and shouting profanities, the royal couple was met with applause and handshakes during their latest appearance.

Chiva, a hilltop town located 30 kilometers west of Valencia city, suffered severe damage when torrential rains caused a normally dry gorge to overflow on 29th October. The resulting deluge demolished two of the town’s four bridges, swept away several houses, and claimed eight lives. Across eastern Spain, the catastrophic flooding left 227 dead, making it the country’s worst natural disaster in decades.

During their visit,

the King and Queen were accompanied by Valencia’s regional president, Carlos Mazón, who faced vocal criticism from residents. While the royal couple received a warm reception, Mazón became the target of complaints and heckles from locals frustrated by what they see as a slow and chaotic response to the disaster.

Mazón and his administration have faced widespread criticism from both the public and opposition politicians. Calls for his resignation have grown, but he has firmly rejected these demands, defending his government’s actions during what he described as a “monstrous avalanche of water that exceeded all weather forecasts.”

Two weeks earlier, the royal couple and Mazón, along with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, visited Paiporta, a neighbourhood on Valencia’s southern outskirts that was among

the hardest hit by the floods. That visit ended in chaos when enraged residents hurled mud and debris at the officials, expressing their fury over what they viewed as inadequate disaster management. Analysts noted that the hostility directed at King Felipe VI was unprecedented and reflective of broader dissatisfaction with the state’s response.

The floods have left thousands homeless and destroyed vehicles and infrastructure in the affected regions. Cleanup operations continue, with emergency crews and volunteers working to restore normalcy. While the royal couple’s return visit to Chiva appeared to help soothe tensions, the anger among many survivors underscores the long road to recovery and the ongoing scrutiny of government officials tasked with rebuilding shattered communities.

Dolores remains the only municipality to receive refund from waste consortium

The Dolores City Council announced this Friday that, for the second consecutive year, it will receive a refund of €23,863.61 from the Vega Baja Waste Consortium. This refund, the highest amount to date, is attributed to the successful implementation of the municipality’s “door-to-door” waste collection system.

Through citizen collaboration and the e ciency of the program, Dolores has achieved signi cant improvements in waste management.

Key achievements include: 30% reduction in urban solid waste (grey container) during the rst six months of the system. 180% increase in the selective collection of cardboard, glass, and packaging. 156 tons of organic waste collected in the rst six months. These outcomes demonstrate that the “door-

to-door” system is not only an environmental success, bringing the municipality closer to meeting Europe’s recycling targets, but also an economic bene t for residents. Mayor Joaquín Hernández emphasized, “Thanks to this initiative, we have been able to reduce the waste collection fee by €9.49 this year, and we hope to continue to reduce it in the future,” highlighting the role of public participation and awareness in achieving these results. The city is now moving forward with plans to

implement contribution areas, which are currently being tendered. These areas aim to consolidate the progress made and further enhance the system’s e ectiveness.

Mayor Hernández added, “The ‘door-to-door’ system is an example of how collaboration between the City Council and citizens can make a di erence. We are very proud of the results obtained and will continue working to promote more sustainable waste management.”

GBP/USD hit six-month lows today after the UK Retail Sales data underwhelmed markets, coming in at -0.7% against forecasts of -0.3% and the latest Flash Manufacturing and Services PMI data, which both came in below expectations, added additional downward pressure to the pound. This follows Wednesday’s CPI data, which rose ahead of expectation from 0.1% to 0.6% month-on-month, and from 1.7% to 2.3% year-on-year, and last Friday’s estimated Q3 GDP growth for the UK came in at 0.1%, down from 0.5% in the second quarter, below the anticipated 0.2%. The Q3 gure indicates that the UK’s economic growth is almost at a standstill.

Nearly 70,000 euros to be allocated for employment and training in 2025

The Consortium for the Economic Development of the Vega Baja (CONVEGA) has unanimously approved its budget for the 2025 scal year, amounting to €673,100. This funding, supported by contributions from the Alicante Provincial Council and the 27 municipalities within the region, will enhance employment and training programs as part of the European Union-funded recovery, transformation, and resilience plan under NextGenerationEU.

Approximately 30% of the budget, around €200,000, will be dedicated to promoting the territorial brand “Vega Baja del Segura, your land and mine” through the Vega Baja del Segura 2025 Tourism Promotion Plan, developed in collaboration with the Alicante Provincial Council. During

the plenary session, held at the Regional Agency of the Alicante Provincial Council in Rojales, it was emphasized that this initial budget is likely to be increased with additional resources from entities such as the Valencian Employment and Training Service (Labora). These additional funds will further advance the region’s territorial and employment strategies, focusing on improving job opportunities for unemployed individuals in vulnerable situations.

Carlos Pastor, president of CONVEGA and provincial deputy for Economic Development and European Projects, underscored the Consortium’s commitment to fostering job creation, addressing the training needs of unemployed individuals, and supporting businesses

and entrepreneurs to enhance competitiveness and strengthen the local economy. He also highlighted the importance of continuing cohesive work with the 27 municipalities to promote the tourist potential of Vega Baja del Segura, enhance regional identity, and strengthen the recognition of the territory brand.

Pastor stated that the territory brand is increasingly wellknown and that e orts will continue in 2025 to position Vega Baja del Segura as an appealing, sustainable, and highquality destination. In addition to the budget, the Annual Action Plan and Annual Contracting Plan for 2025 were approved during the session, serving as strategic tools to guide the Consortium’s initiatives

Orihuela City Council denies only €13,000 allocated for coastal road signs

The Councillor for Citizen Security, Mónica Pastor, has refuted claims by the Unidos por la Costa association that only €13,000 will be allocated to Orihuela Costa under the new road signage contract. Pastor clari ed that the contract is designed to address the needs of the entire municipality, including Orihuela city center, its districts, and Orihuela Costa, with actions prioritized based on each area’s requirements.

Pastor emphasized that the €13,000 gure cited by Unidos por la Costa on social media does not appear in the tender document or any o cial

communication from the City Council. The contract, with a total budget of €240,000, is divided into two parts. The rst, worth €200,000 over two years, covers the installation and maintenance of horizontal and vertical road signs in Orihuela city center and surrounding areas, including tasks like painting road markings and replacing or installing signs.

The second part, with an annual budget of €39,875.71, is for supplying vertical signage and complementary materials, such as tra c signs, fences, beacons, and road paint, for Orihuela city, its districts, and Orihuela Costa.

Los Montesinos City Council awards €7,000 in scholarships to 48 students from the municipality

The Local Government Board of Los Montesinos City Council has approved aid distribution for students pursuing intermediate and higherlevel training cycles, high school, professional and higher artistic education, or university studies during the 2023-24 academic year. The aid applies to those studying

for official qualifications outside Los Montesinos, as these courses are not offered locally.

A budget of €7,000, increased from the previous year, has been allocated among 48 eligible applicants. Each will receive €145 to help cover costs, primarily transportation, associated

with studying outside the town. Councillor for Education Rosa Belén Morán acknowledged the modest amount but emphasized its value as economic support. She also expressed the City Council’s commitment to increasing this budget in the future.

Guardia Civil dismantle Torrevieja refrigerantgasesgang

The Civil Guard has dismantled an illegal operation in Torrevieja involving the trafficking of refrigerant gases and improper handling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The investigation began in August when SEPRONA received

an anonymous tip about environmental violations.

A 44-year-old Romanian man, previously involved in similar crimes, was identified as the main suspect. He purchased used air conditioning units from installers for €20 each, dismantled them unsafely in his courtyard,

and sold the metal as scrap, earning €23,000 in three months. Four installers were implicated, three of whom were operating illegally. Additionally, an undocumented worker was found performing hazardous tasks without proper safety measures.

The suspect faces charges for environmental crimes, hazardous waste management violations, illegal refrigerant trafficking, and labor rights abuses. The case has been forwarded to the Investigative Court No. 4 of Torrevieja and the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office of Alicante. Local authorities and environmental agencies have also been informed.

The Civil Guard emphasizes the importance of proper waste management and urges the public to report similar illegal activities.

Orihuela to re-tender beach bars at Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, and Cala Estaca

It has been two summers since the beach bars at Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, and Cala Estaca were closed, and the wait for their reopening will continue. This past summer, these were the only beaches in Orihuela without open beach bars. The governing team now faces a new tender process after the Contracting Committee rejected the documentation from the fourth company that had applied.

The issue began during the previous PSOECs government, which decided in January 2023 to cancel the existing contract and start a new tender. However, the tender wasn’t published until November 2023, after the PP-Vox government took over. The current administration chose to divide the contract into lots to increase bids, unlike the previous contract, where one company was awarded all the beach

bars. While companies were selected for all the other lots before summer, Lot 1, which includes the beaches in question, failed to secure a bidder in time for the busy season.

Four companies bid for Lot 1, with the top three being excluded for failing to provide required documentation. The fourth bidder was also excluded, with the decision being made by the Contracting Committee last Tuesday. The nal bidder has yet to be o cially noti ed of the

decision. The Punta Prima beach bar is considered one of the highestgrossing in the area.

While the exclusion of companies is not uncommon, dividing the contract into lots carried the risk of leaving beach bars without operators. However, the City Council has bene ted nancially, with income from beach bar concessions nearly doubling, from €900,000 in 2022 to almost €2 million now.

Civil Guard busts mandarin fraud in Vega Baja

The Civil Guard, as part of Operation Mago24, has arrested two men for their alleged involvement in a fraud case concerning the purchase and sale of 155,000 kilograms of mandarins. The fraud, valued at €56,710, targeted agricultural holdings in the towns of Jacarilla and Orihuela in the Vega Baja del Segura region.

The investigation began in September after farmers reported being defrauded in mandarin sales. The ROCA Team of the Torrevieja Civil Guard Company identified the culprits as a 61-year-old administrator of a citrus distribution and export company and his 64-year-old trusted commission agent. The suspects negotiated the purchase of the mandarins for a total price of €66,710, requiring the farmers to also pay a 3% commission to the intermediary. After an initial payment of €10,000, the remaining balance was issued through 45-day promissory notes that turned out to be unfunded, causing further losses for the farmers.

The perpetrators used a seemingly solvent company

to acquire the produce, quickly reselling it below market value for immediate cash flow. They then defaulted on the promissory notes and sometimes dissolved the company to evade legal accountability.

As part of the operation, technical inspections of the affected farms were carried out with support from Civil Guard agents in Jacarilla and Almoradí. On November 7, the two suspects were arrested and charged with fraud but were later released after providing statements. The case has been referred to the Dean’s Office of the Judicial District of Orihuela

for further proceedings.

The Civil Guard has urged farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs to exercise caution in their commercial dealings, recommending thorough checks on the solvency of companies before accepting deferred payments.

Any suspicions of irregular activity should be reported to aid investigations and prevent similar fraud cases.

This operation underscores the Civil Guard’s commitment to protecting the agricultural sector, a vital component of the regional economy.

Student awarded €112,505 after PE class injury in Torrevieja

The Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunidad Valenciana (TSJCV) has ruled in favor of a student who su ered severe injuries during a physical education class at IES Torrevigía in Torrevieja. The judgment mandates the Generalitat Valenciana to compensate the student with 112,505 euros, a signi cant increase from the previous amount of 44,000 euros. This case underscores the responsibility of educational institutions for student safety and the legal consequences of accidents.

On May 10, 2017, the student tripped over a nylon rope while warming up, resulting in extensive injuries, including traumatic brain and cervical injuries, two cerebral hemorrhages, and jaw damage. After losing consciousness and experiencing convulsions, the student was rushed to Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja and later transferred to the intensive care unit at Hospital General de Alicante. Seven years later, the student continues to face ongoing health issues such as epilepsy and mild cognitive disorders. Although the Generalitat Valenciana acknowledged the facts of the accident, it contested

the compensation amount. In February 2021, a representative from the Ministry of Education recognized the student’s right to compensation but initially proposed 44,000 euros. The student’s family, however, sought 269,095 euros. Ultimately, the TSJCV con rmed a compensation of 112,505 euros, considering expert evaluations of the health damages and the student’s recovery time. This case serves as an important reminder for schools to implement safety protocols to prevent accidents. Legal experts often rely on health assessments to determine the extent of damages, showing that schools can be held liable for incidents resulting from negligence.

As the case progresses, it highlights the need for educational institutions to evaluate and improve their safety measures. Proper training and preventive strategies are essential to protect students during extracurricular activities, ensuring their well-being remains a priority. This ruling not only compensates the a ected student but also raises awareness about the critical need for safe environments in schools.

Police bust Alicante fraud ring behind €5M fake electronics scams

The National Police have dismantled a criminal organisation based in Alicante that defrauded over ve million euros by creating fake websites impersonating legitimate high-end electronics stores. In ‘Operation Suplant,’ three individuals were arrested, and two others were identi ed. The arrested suspects had more than 100 bank accounts opened with false documentation, where they received money defrauded from over 1,000 victims.

Police carried out raids in Orihuela and Torrevieja, seizing over 100 unregistered credit cards and a recording device. The criminal group operated by mimicking legitimate electronics company websites, using nearly identical interfaces and similar domain names. They o ered products, such as luxury watches and smartphones, at slightly lower prices to avoid suspicion. By securing preferential positions in search engine results, the scammers ensured their fraudulent sites appeared

before legitimate ones. Once a fraudulent page was detected and shut down, they quickly launched a new one. The organization converted the stolen funds into cryptocurrencies and made numerous transfers through “cold wallets” to obscure the money trail. Additionally, they opened the bank accounts using falsi ed documents.

During the searches, authorities found counterfeit documents, blank credit cards ready for recording with stolen data, a recording device, and mobile phones used in the scams.

With Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season approaching, the police have issued a warning about suspicious promotions sent via email or social media that lead users to fake websites designed to steal personal and nancial information. Experts recommend being vigilant for “typosquatting,” a technique where fraudulent sites exploit typing errors in web addresses. Additionally, shoppers should scrutinize website designs, as fake sites often feature poorquality images and poorly translated text.

The American Financial Planner in Spain to call if you have questions

How would you rate your knowledge of investments such as stocks and bonds? Are you someone who might match wits with professional investors, or do you not know the di erence between Common Stock and Livestock?

Whatever your answer, there is someone in Spain that can help. His name is Peter Dougherty, and he helps individuals and families as a nancial planner at BISSAN Wealth Management.

Because Mr. Dougherty is an American who worked at investment banks Lehman Brothers, First Boston and Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York for twenty years, he knows about Wall Street. But he knows about Main Street,

too. In fact, he’s written two books to help expats in Spain understand personal nances.

In his rst book, “The Dougherty Code: Secrets of Financial Planning in Spain Revealed”, he describes the nancial opportunities and challenges facing expats in Spain.

This is what professional book reviewers say about it:

“The book is excellent for laypersons who are interested in getting nancial advice but are intimidated by the unapproachability and apparent complexity of nancial systems.”— IndieReader

“I liked the fact that even the technical aspects of nancial management and

planning are presented in an accessible writing style to ensure all readers can easily understand the topic at hand.”—Readers’ Favorite

“One of the standout features of the book is the author’s ability to demystify the complexities

Olive oil price drops 13% at source but remains high in supermarkets

The price of extra virgin olive oil has dropped by 2.5% in Spanish supermarkets year-on-year, according to a comparative study by the consumer organization Facua. However, the reduction is much smaller than the 13% fall seen at the source, where the price has decreased signi cantly more. In November 2023, the average price of a litre of extra virgin olive oil was 12.50 euros, but it now stands at 12.18 euros, re ecting a modest decrease of 0.32 euros per litre. This price is still almost four times higher than the cost in 2021.

Data from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture shows that the price at source for extra virgin olive oil in the rst week of November 2024 was 6.45 euros per litre, excluding taxes, compared to 7.41 euros per litre in the same period last year. This represents a 13% reduction in the amount farmers are paid for the oil they produce, with a decrease of 0.96 euros per litre.

Facua also highlighted changes to the VAT (sales tax) on olive oil. Last year, the VAT rate was 5%, but it was reduced to 0% in July 2024 and then raised to 2% in October, a rate that will

remain in place until the end of the year. From January 2025, a super-reduced VAT rate of 4% will apply, as the product is considered a basic necessity.

The organization also noted that virgin olive oil prices at source have followed a similar downward trend. In early November 2023, the price was 6.54 euros per litre, while in the rst week of November 2024, it had dropped to 5.86 euros per litre, a reduction of 0.68 euros.

Facua criticized supermarket chains for maintaining a nonaggression pact on the prices of private label olive oils. On 2 November 2024, Mercadona reduced the price of its Hacendado brand extra virgin olive oil from 8.85 euros to 8.20 euros, a decrease of 0.65 euros. Soon after, other large supermarket chains, including Alcampo, Eroski, Carrefour, and Dia, followed suit, lowering their prices to the same level. Carrefour made its adjustment on 9 November, with a price of 8.19 euros, while Dia reduced its price to 8.20 euros on 12 November.

Hipercor was the only

of investment banking and make them accessible to readers from all walks of life.”—OnlineBookClub.org

In his second book , “La Hoja de Ruta Fiscal y Financiera para los españoles en EE.UU.”, Mr. Dougherty explains in Spanish the di erences between the U.S. and Spanish tax and nancial systems. The book received the Literary Titan Book Award. Recipients of this award are “commended for their ability to transform complex topics into accessible and compelling narratives that captivate readers and enhance our understanding.”

supermarket chain that did not immediately adjust its prices, keeping its extra virgin olive oil at 8.85 euros.

Facua is awaiting clari cation from the Ministry of Social Rights regarding whether it will pursue sanctions against supermarket chains for increasing their pro t margins. The organization led complaints in July for price increases in private labels. Additionally, Facua criticized the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) for not responding to its repeated complaints, which it rst submitted in November 2023.

Mercadona worker fired for eating croquette wins court appeal

A court has ruled that the dismissal of a Mercadona worker in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo, for eating a croquette from a packet destined for the trash was unfair. The employee, who had worked at the store for 16 years, took the croquette after the store closed on 8 July and admitted to a manager that he ate it without paying. Despite company policy prohibiting such actions, the worker was dismissed for a serious o ense.

However, the Castilla y León High Court deemed the dismissal unjust, ordering the worker’s reinstatement or a compensation of 39,702 euros. The judge found that the croquette, meant for waste and with no market value, did not constitute theft or misappropriation. The court ruled that while the worker’s action could be considered disobedience, it was not grounds for dismissal.

to use Android Auto to connect to the car.

Android Auto is software that can be utilized from an Android mobile device, acting as a master to a vehicle’s dashboard head unit. Once the user’s Android device is connected to the vehicle, the head unit will serve as an external display for the Android device, presenting supported software in a car-speci c user interface provided by the Android Auto app. In Android Auto’s rst iterations, the device was required to be connected via USB to the car.

For some time, starting in November 2016, Google added the option to run Android Auto as a regular app on an Android device, which allowed the choice to use Android Auto simply on a personal phone or tablet, as opposed to on a compatible automotive head-unit. This app was decommissioned in June 2022 in favour of a Driving Mode built into the Google Assistant app.

“What is the best way to get UK TV without using illegal IPTV subscriptions”?

If you cannot install a suitably sized satellite dish, your best option is to use a VPN and sign in to the 4 Main free-to-access UK TV providers.

You need to:-

• Pay for a suitable VPN to disguise your actual geographical location. You can pay for VPN annually or get a special deal for more years.

• Then you download and install BBC iPlayer, ITV X, All 4 and My5.

Create an account for each of these.

To use it, you rst need to open the VPN and select a UK location—there may be several to choose from. When selected close the VPN application. It will still be working in the background. Open your chosen iPlayer and watch live TV or search for archived programmes.

Using a combination of a VPN and a UK iPlayer App you can watch UK TV on a Smart TV, Computer, mobile phone or tablet.

Health & Beauty

I met my girlfriend at a singles club for bereaved people; we hit it off right away and are now engaged. We both didn’t think it was possible to meet someone else, after we’d lost our partners. Both of us retired to Alicante, and then disaster hit with us losing our spouses within five years to cancer. We moved in together and everything is fine; except my lady insists she has a picture of her deceased husband on display. I do not think it is appropriate, and I feel haunted by it. I don’t feel the need to have a photo of my wife and wonder how she would feel if I did.

You need to talk to your lady and tell her of your feelings. But do consider her feelings, as she obviously still misses her husband. It’s great that you’ve both met one another and found happiness again; don’t let this spoil things for you both. You might learn not to look at the photo; or put one of your wife in a frame and remember them both together.

Physical exercise and a balanced diet help COPD patients improve their quality of life

• COPD significantly impacts cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and arrhythmias.

• The prevalence of COPD has decreased due to reduced smoking rates, yet its incidence remains high due to an ageing population.

To mark World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day, Dr Líder Espinoza Cordero, a specialist in the Pulmonology Department at Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, advises COPD patients to not only avoid tobacco use but also engage in regular physical activity appropriate to their condition and maintain a balanced diet to enjoy a better quality of life.

“COPD patients,” highlights Dr Espinoza Cordero, “often face an exacerbation of other respiratory conditions as their disease progresses, such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Moreover, cardiovascular diseases, including arrhythmias and heart failure, also have a significant impact on their health and require specialist monitoring.”

COPD affects approximately 10–15% of the adult population. While its prevalence has decreased due to the decline in

Another crucial element is pulmonary rehabilitation, which helps alleviate symptoms. “It’s important to bear in mind,” explains Dr Espinoza, “that this therapy is indicated for any patient with chronic respiratory disease who continues to experience symptoms despite receiving appropriate pharmacological treatment.”

smoking rates, its incidence remains high, driven by the ageing population, notes the specialist from Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital.

Treatment for COPD

The primary treatment for COPD is smoking cessation, followed by inhalation therapy, which

mainly involves the use of bronchodilators. In specific cases, inhaled corticosteroids are added to reduce inflammation.

“In advanced stages of the disease with severe oxygen deprivation,” explains Dr Espinoza Cordero, “home oxygen therapy becomes necessary.”

Dr Espinoza also emphasises the importance of vaccination for COPD patients to prevent influenza and SARS-CoV infections, and, most importantly, pneumonia through pneumococcal vaccination.

Caravans turn Zenia Boulevard car park in Orihuela Costa into a mess

The lack of dedicated caravan parking facilities on the Orihuela coast is creating growing issues for both residents and caravan travelers. The popularity of the car park near Zenia Boulevard shopping center, now informally recognized as “Camper Free Parking” on Google Maps, highlights the demand for such spaces. However, this area is ill-equipped to handle the needs of caravan travelers, such as proper waste disposal

and other necessary services, leading to problems like garbage accumulation and concerns about sanitation.

Complaints from residents, though limited in volume due to the site’s distance from residential areas, center on the environmental impact, including littering and the improper disposal of bodily waste. Social media platforms, such as the Facebook account ‘Mejoramos,’ have ampli ed these concerns.

There have been calls for a more structured solution. Unidos por la Costa proposed the creation of a regulated caravan park, an idea echoed in the Partido Popular’s (PP) electoral program. Implementing such a project could address the growing demand while mitigating environmental and social issues, balancing the needs of caravan travelers and the local community.

Nadal to retire from professional tennis at the end of this season

Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, has announced he will retire from professional tennis at the end of this season. The 38-yearold’s final appearance will be representing Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga next month.

In a video message, Nadal reflected on the challenges of recent years, saying, “The reality is that it has been some difficult years, the last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to

play without limitations.”

Nadal retires as the secondmost successful men’s singles player, trailing only Novak Djokovic. Known as the ‘King of Clay,’ Nadal claimed a record 14 French Open titles and won 112 of his 116 matches at Roland Garros. He also secured four US Open titles, two Wimbledon titles, and two Australian Open victories. His career includes Olympic gold medals in singles and doubles, as well as four Davis

Cup triumphs with Spain.

As part of the legendary ‘Big Three’ alongside Djokovic and Roger Federer, Nadal helped shape an era of dominance in men’s tennis, captivating fans worldwide. Federer, who retired in 2022, paid tribute: “What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and incredible achievements. It’s been an absolute honour.”

Ed Sheeran interrupts Man Utd manager

Amorim’s Sky interview

Ruben Amorim’s first post-match interview as Manchester United head coach took an unexpected turn when singer and Ipswich Town minority stakeholder Ed Sheeran awkwardly interrupted the discussion.

Amorim’s debut saw United take an early lead against Ipswich with Marcus Rashford scoring within 80 seconds. However, Ipswich responded strongly, equalizing through Omari Hutchinson’s stunning long-range strike, with Andre Onana forced to make multiple saves to keep United in the game.

Fans on social media criticized Sheeran’s interruption, calling it “rude” and “unprofessional.”

One wrote: “Imagine letting a pop star interrupt an interview

with a coach.” Another added: “Totally disrespectful when interviewing a manager.”

Sheeran, who owns a 1.4% stake in Ipswich, has been

a regular at Portman Road this season, even attending their season opener against Liverpool, though he had to leave early for a concert in Serbia.

On Tuesday 12th of November

we fished the next round of the winter series at the El Bosquet Complex. With reports of impending doom ,danas, you name it we were getting it over the forthcoming days it was nice to see nineteen anglers turn out on what was a pleasant day weather wise.

It was decided that we would fish three sections of anglers with 7 on A1 to 7 and 12 anglers on pegs 26 to 40 which had been fishing well. Fishing or Angling to give it its correct name is a funny old game and often throws up the unexpected. It turned out that pegs 26 o 40 fished well below par and the old fancied section of A1 to 7 was by far the best

section to be in.

Winner on the day was one of our Andalucian visitors who made the long journey from Mojacar worth while. Drawn on peg 2 he fished the pole with maggots for a runaway victory weighing 27kg. In second place was Doug Hornblow who used his little method feeder with pellet on peg B1and caught mullet and carp for 20.56kg. In third place was John Waples . John fished the long pole from peg 36 with maggots and caught 10 carp for 14.73kg.

The other weights in truth are best forgotten with the section on 26 to 31 being won with a magnificent weight of 3.16kg by

none other than Mr Pastry who was sporting a rather fetching t shirt after having his blue vest surgically removed for the winter season. Wednesdays match was a total wash out although a couple of hardy souls did fish in the rain and mud. Memberships are now being taken for the 2025 season. We are members of the Murcian federation and if anyone would like to join this friendly bunch then I can be contacted by email at iantravel@hotmail.co.uk
