Expat flees scene of fatal Torrevieja accident
A sombre cloud hangs over Torrevieja today following news of a fatal tra c accident that unfolded during the early hours of Saturday morning on the notorious N-332 ring road. The collision,
a head-on impact, shattered the silence around 4am the Parque de las Naciones, ultimately claiming the life of a 44-yearold Peruvian national.
The driver of the other vehicle, reported
to be of Irish origin, was behind the wheel of a rental car at the time of the incident. Shockingly, the driver chose to ee the scene on foot, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
The incident involved just two vehicles: the car operated by the deceased Peruvian driver and the rental vehicle driven by the Irish national. It was revealed that the rental car had been leased only a few days prior to the tragic collision.
Responding swiftly to the emergency call, the Torrevieja Local Police patrols arrived at the scene of the accident, even though the jurisdiction of the road technically falls under the Civil Guard’s remit. The local o cers’ proximity allowed them to reach the scene promptly, fully aware that there was at least one victim in dire need of assistance.
Emergency services were
simultaneously alerted by the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Generalitat (CICU) and promptly dispatched to provide necessary medical aid and support.
The Torrevieja ring road, characterized by a single lane in each direction and enduring a daily in ux of heavy tra c, has long been a focal point of concern for authorities. This stretch of road has earned the grim distinction of being an accident “black spot,” as o cially designated by the DGT (Dirección General de Trá co), where overtaking manoeuvres are strictly prohibited.
Sadly, the N-332 has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years. During the summer months, minor rear-end collisions between vehicles occur almost daily. Despite ongoing concerns and mounting accident statistics, improvements to this
highway have languished in bureaucratic limbo for over 15 years.
As the investigation into this tragic incident unfolds, the Torrevieja community is left grappling with the loss of another life on a road long plagued by safety concerns. The memory of this accident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improvements to enhance the safety of all travellers who navigate this treacherous section of roadway.

San Miguel quarry angers local residents
A residents’ group in San Miguel de Salinas is vehemently opposing the reopening of a clay quarry near Villamartin, citing concerns about heavy lorries using narrow roads and the potential negative impact on the local environment.
The Valencian government recently released a favourable environmental impact study that paves the way for the resumption of activities at the 32,000-square-meter Las Majadas quarry, which is situated in a protected forestry zone. The proposed extraction rate is set at 10,000 cubic meters of clay annually.
The Neighbours Association of San Miguel has wasted no time in voicing their concerns and has formally
appealed to the local council to stand against the reopening of the quarry. Their primary objection centres on the anticipated increase in heavy lorry tra c, which would traverse the already congested CV95 and CV941 highways.
“The council should refrain from granting authorisation for road usage and must oppose this project,” declared the association, underlining their steadfast opposition.
The residents’ group’s concerns extend beyond tra c congestion. They harbour serious reservations about the environmental implications of reopening the quarry. In a written statement, the association highlighted the detrimental e ects of previous,
Rain wreaks havoc
Fire ghters have carried out four interventions across the Vega Baja due to the rains over the weekend. From 8:00pm on Saturday until 9:00am on Sunday, 3rd September, the Alicante Provincial Fire ghters Consortium has carried out 17 interventions throughout the province, four of them in the local area, due to the orange alert for rain issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
In the case of Vega Baja, re ghters intervened in Guardamar del Segura to carry out the cleaning of the façade of a building after debris fell due to the rain and for the same reason, they also intervened in Torrevieja.
In Orihuela, a re broke out in an electrical installation in the wiring, and in addition, re ghters intervened after ooding in an attic. However, luckily the DANA left less impact than expected, according to MeteOrihuela, who said that although the rains have been widespread, they have not reached the intensity and accumulations that were expected. The most intense downpour occurred on the coast, Proyecto Mastral Torrevieja reported that the passage of the storm unleashed up to 30 litres per square meter
unauthorized quarrying activities.
“When the quarry was illicitly operationalized at the turn of the last century, it resulted in the removal of forest soil and a general degradation of the environment,” the statement noted.
Moreover, the group rmly believes that endorsing such industrial activities is fundamentally incompatible with the preservation of the local ora and fauna, as well as the broader tourism interests of the municipality.
As this debate unfolds, San Miguel de Salinas residents are anxiously awaiting the response of their local council and the ultimate decision regarding the future of the Las Majadas clay quarry.
in the salt city, which caused some streets to be ooded.
Sunday the sun was visible during the day, but the leading weather phenomenon was high winds rather than the rain. Gusts of more than 60km/h were recorded and altered the maritime forecast with waves reaching up to 3 meters in height. The province remained under a yellow warning due to rain, storms, wind, and coastal phenomena until midnight on Sunday, according to the AEMET.

Pedro Sanchez bids to secure EU recognition for regional languages
The interim Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, is embarking on a diplomatic manoeuvre to garner the support of separatist groups and strengthen his political position. This involves seeking European Union (EU) recognition for three regional languages, but experts suggest that the potential hurdles of cost, skilled personnel shortages, and international caution might hinder the success of his plans.
In a bold move, the Spanish capital approached the EU with a formal request to include Basque, Catalan, and Galician among the bloc’s o cial languages. This initiative places the decision squarely in the hands of the General A airs Council, which is due to convene in September to deliberate on whether these languages should be added to the list of the EU’s 24 o cial languages.
Sanchez’s administration has been swift in its e orts to bolster the status of regional languages since revealing its language strategy. A signi cant development came as Francina Armengol, a close ally of Sanchez and a Catalan speaker, secured the position of speaker of the lower chamber by garnering the support of separatist parties. Armengol has declared that Galician, Catalan, and Basque languages will now nd acceptance in the Spanish
Congress. She emphasised that this move re ects the nation’s linguistic diversity and cultural richness, terming it a “fact of democratic normalcy.”
The Spanish Prime Minister’s letter to the current EU rotating presidency, held by the Czech Republic, highlights the signi cance of recognising Basque, Catalan, and Galician. Sanchez contends that this recognition will not only bolster linguistic diversity and cultural heritage within the EU but also promote values of tolerance and understanding.
Leaders of the Basque, Catalan, and Galician autonomous communities have, of course, lauded the Spanish government’s request for EU recognition. Nonetheless, opposition has emerged from other quarters of Spain. Critics argue that such recognition could provide an unfair advantage to these languages over Castilian, the o cial language of Spain.
As the decision looms, the EU’s Council faces a complex array of considerations. These include the number of speakers of
these languages, their historical and cultural relevance, and the associated costs of providing translation services.
Beyond the stated reasons, political calculations might be motivating Sanchez’s push for this recognition. In the backdrop of the growing Catalan independence movement, Sanchez seems to be aiming to appease Catalan separatists by securing EU recognition for the Catalan language, potentially preventing further secessionist endeavours.
The outcome of Sanchez’s gambit remains uncertain, and the process will unfold over time. Nevertheless, his bid for EU acknowledgment of Basque, Catalan, and Galician as o cial languages marks a signi cant milestone in Spain’s ongoing discourse on linguistic diversity.

Rubiales investigated for possible sexual aggression
The Prosecutor’s O ce of Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, has announced it is opening a preliminary investigation against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The investigation stems from allegations of a non-consensual kiss involving Spain mid elder Jenni Hermoso during postmatch celebrations at the World Cup nal in Australia.
The Prosecutor’s O ce had been deliberating over six distinct formal complaints submitted by individuals and organisations. However, it had hesitated to proceed with investigation proceedings due to the absence of a complaint from the alleged victim, Jenni Hermoso herself. This changed when Hermoso issued a statement con rming her feelings of vulnerability and victimisation due to what she referred to as an “aggression.” This unexpected development prompted the legal pursuit against Rubiales, who has consequently been suspended from his presidential position.
In a decisive order the Prosecutor’s O ce extended an invitation to Hermoso, urging her to formalise the complaint she articulated publicly the
previous week. In that statement, Hermoso explicitly stated that the kiss had not been consensual. The court provided her with a 15day window to establish contact, allowing her to be informed of her rights as an alleged victim of a potential crime under article 178 of the Spanish Penal Code. This article encompasses actions that infringe upon an individual’s sexual freedom without their consent and carries a penalty of one to four years of imprisonment.
At present, the investigation against Rubiales remains at a pre-procedural stage. This signi es that there isn’t an active case against the RFEF president; rather, an initial examination will occur to assess if there exists adequate evidence to recommend further legal actions. The Prosecutor’s O ce has already indicated its understanding that the reported “sexual act su ered” by Hermoso was not consensual.
The inciting incident, the kiss, had ignited a restorm of criticism, with numerous quarters interpreting it as a form
The Civil Guard arrests five people for an attack on Guardamar local policeofficers
The Civil Guard, with the collaboration of the Guardamar Local Police , has arrested ve people and investigated another, for the attack on several police o cers while they were carrying out tra c regulation tasks . The detainees have been placed at the disposal of the Torrevieja Investigative Court.
Given the magnitude of the events, the Main Post of the Guardamar Civil Guard began a series of investigations together with the Local Police of Guardamar, to identify all possible perpetrators linked to the attacks.
of sexual abuse. The incident transpired during the medal ceremony following the World Cup nal in Sydney, Australia. Further scrutiny was directed at Rubiales after an earlier act in which he gestured by grabbing his crotch in a triumphant manner while seated in the presidential box next to the Spanish queen and her teenage princess daughter. Reacting to the developments, FIFA, the international soccer governing body, provisionally suspended Rubiales for a duration of 90 days after he de antly delivered a speech and refused to resign from his post.
The next day, after studying the evidence obtained, two other members of the family were arrested, a man and a woman aged 36 and 42, and a 17-year-old male was also investigated. These last two detainees, due to their degree of participation in the events, were released after taking their statements. All the detainees and the person investigated are accused of an attack against an agent of the authority. The rst three detainees, along with the proceedings carried out, were made available to the Investigative Court No. 1 of Torrevieja, which has decreed their release with the imposition of precautionary measures. In addition, the Alicante Juvenile
Prosecutor’s O ce has been informed of the events, as a minor supposedly participated in the events.
The events began on August 27 on the Guardamar promenade, when local police o cers from that municipality went to a badly parked vehicle, speci cally in a loading and unloading area. At that moment, a man who claimed to be the owner of the vehicle began to rebuke the agents, and ve more relatives joined him, all of them residents of Madrid. At a certain point, said group began to physically attack the agents, and even took the incapacitating
stun gun from one of the agents, ring a missed shot. The weapon was later recovered by the agent herself.
Immediately, various patrols from the Torrevieja Civil Guard Company and the Guardamar Local Police went to the scene, proceeding to arrest the three main aggressors. Being these three Spanish, aged between 20 and 38 years of age and with various backgrounds.
Once the arrests were made, the attacked agents were transferred to the Torrevieja University Hospital, to treat them for the injuries su ered.

After the visit, they held a working meeting at the Town Hall to discuss the educational needs of Torrevieja, one of the most complex cities in the Valencian Community, given the large number of new pupils each school year.
The mayor thanked the two heads of the Regional Ministry of Education that Torrevieja was the rst city in the Valencian Community to visit since they took o ce to discuss the educational needs of the town.

Solidarity Foods Torrevieja reopens with numbers of needy people remaining at an all timehigh
Solidarity Foods in Torrevieja have not less than 200 daily menus for years among the most needy. Although the number decreases in the summer months, during the rest of the year they exceed 300 menus a day. It is complicated in these times of in ation, or what happened with the arrival of Ukrainians due to the war, for the numbers to go down.
In August the NGO closed its doors, but they guaranteed food in July, supplying the bene ciary families. Last Monday they reopened their doors and kitchens to once again have this gesture of solidarity with the most vulnerable, thanks to volunteers, suppliers, donations and subsidies from the City Council, Antonio Sánchez, coordinator of Solidarity Foods

Mcevoy also announced that the Infant and Primary School No. 14, which is also almost nished, will be operational with all its pupils during the week of 25 September. This is a line 2 school, which was urgently needed, given the large number of pupils that have been added over the last year.
Finally, the Regional Secretary of Education has also reported that given the needs of Torrevieja in education, the 6th Secondary School (IES) of the city will be built on a plot located in the urbanization Los Altos, speci cally in the street Manzanilla, in the south of the
town.
For his part, the Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero, recalled that 15 actions of the Edi cant Plan are currently underway, some of them very urgent, such as the structural repair and extension of the IES Libertas, whose works will begin in the next few days. Likewise, Recuero added, there is a need for the total remodelling of the IES Las Lagunas due to its structural problems; the removal of the roof of the CEIP Virgen del Carmen; the need to extend the IES Torrevigía secondary school to relieve the pressure on the school, as well as the renovation of the Cuba school, a centre that is more than 50 years old and with numerous problems that need a comprehensive solution.

Measures to control pigeon population in Orihuelaunderway
The Health Department of the Orihuela City Council, headed by Irene Celdrán, is acting these days to control the population of pigeons that is causing unsanitary problems in the streets and squares of the city, as well as inconvenience to neighbors and merchants.
Pigeon excrement corrodes the stone of historical monuments, urban furniture and building facades, causing damage, deterioration and dirt on terraces, cornices and pavement of the space in which they live and even in certain cases causing public health problems.
The proliferation of pigeons in urban environments is not a unique case of Orihuela , but has
occurred in other municipalities where they have had to act to control the colonies of these birds.
For this reason, the Orihuela City Council has begun to act in “main squares and streets that are very a ected, such as the Glorieta Gabriel Miró or the Plaza San Sebastián,” the councilor reported, announcing that in the coming weeks they will establish measures. on Mayor Street where neighbors and merchants have reported the problems they are having with pigeons.
In this sense, the Oriolana councilor has stated that “this is a normal action that complies with all animal protection measures, since the pigeons are subsequently transferred to a
zoo.”
Irene Celdrán has indicated that “we also have to take into account the Public Health problems that the lack of control of pigeons can cause, such as possible diseases, which is why it is important to carry out this action with all the guarantees.”
Last April, on Radio Orihuela, neighbors and merchants on Calle Mayor reported that there are more and more pigeons in this environment, especially in homes that are abandoned and where they are nesting. They brought it to the attention of the City Council and hope for a prompt solution. The council, sensitive to this problem, has initiated actions from the Department of Health.

The pound found some support throughout the week, with GBP/USD rising from a low of 1.2550 to push back over 1.2750 before moderating somewhat. The path forward is likely to be dominated by broader dollar positioning, with GBP/USD set to follow the direction of other dollar majors. GBP/EUR has declined to back under 1.1700 this week, having tapped a oneyear high near 1.1800 on 23rd August.
The movement seems to have been driven by the broadly weaker dollar, following the run of weaker data coming out of the US this week, as opposed to any speci c emerging sterling strength. In fact, the few pieces of incoming UK data this week were unlikely to have encouraged sterling bulls – including the latest survey from the British Retail Consortium con rming the UK witnessed the slowest increase in shop prices for almost a year.
The Bank of England’s chief economist, Huw Pill, speaking at a monetary policy conference in South Africa yesterday, talked about the potential for “in icting unnecessary damage” increasing as the Bank moved closer to the end of its hiking cycle while also reiterating that monetary policy would need to be “su ciently restrictive for su ciently long” to tame stubbornly high in ation.

Flood prevention measures forAutumn
I resigned myself years ago that my father was never going to be in my life. Mum never said too much against him; only the facts and then left it to me to draw my own conclusions. Now, at 33, my father has got in touch. It’s blown my mind. He gave me a load of flannel to begin with, how he regretted not being part of my life. My mother was of course sceptical and warned me to be careful, however, after few weeks he dropped a bombshell. My half-brother, who is the product of his second relationship, needs a
kidney transplant and he wanted me to get tested. At that moment my world fell apart with sorrow. After a lot of thought, I took the test, but wasn’t a match. And guess what? My father dropped me like a stone, again. If I’d been a match, I would truly have donated the kidney; otherwise, I felt that I would always have regrets. I didn’t even get an acknowledgement from my half-brother. I am having problems moving on from the hurt. How can I help myself get over this?
I can imagine the devastation you will
be feeling. Seeing a good Therapist would help; you’ll need to talk it out, although you say that you talk to your mother about it, which is good. Anyone who truly loves you, will want to be near you. My philosophy is, that if someone does not want to know you, get to know you, or causes or wishes you harm; then they don’t deserve to share your life; it’s as simple as that. Sadly, these people may be your family members. My advice is to say goodbye to being a victim, learn from this, and go forth to live your best life. If your father decides to rear his head again, you have the right to have nothing to do with him.
In view of the imminent autumn season and the possibility of adverse weather conditions, Almoradí Town Hall has put in place a series of preventive measures. These actions are primarily aimed at mitigating any potential risk to citizens, and to achieve this, e ciency and collaboration between all the entities involved is being prioritised.
On the one hand, and
throughout the summer, both the cleaning of the drainage pipes of the CV-91 and the AP-7 motorway is being carried out in our municipality, as established in the Municipal Action Plan for ood risk, as well as scuppers in industrial estates and areas likely to generate problems.
In addition to the local work, the Mayoress María Gómez has asked the Confederación
Hidrográ ca del Segura for a thorough assessment and cleaning of the riverbed as it passes through Almoradí, as well as ravines and wadis within the municipality.
The Almoradí Town Hall is carrying out all these actions in order to anticipate and avoid problems in the future, guaranteeing as far as possible the safety and wellbeing of our neighbours.

Campoverde Church in the Community summer club 2023
How does a Church get and hold the interest of children long enough to tell them about God and in a way that they will remember for a long time?
The answer for Campoverde Church in the Community is: provide them with a Summer Club, held every Thursday in August, that is fun, exciting and gives them an opportunity to display their talents, with God sprinkled on everything we do!
We take our role in the community very seriously. We know that going to Church is increasingly unpopular in modern life but rather than just close our doors and give up, we take our Church out into the community. Everything we do as a Church is motivated by our desire to tell people about God.
We are particularly aware that the younger generations know even
less about God than those older generations who maybe grew up going to Sunday School or being in the Church choir as children. Teaching about God is being excluded more and more from modern life and we believe that is having a detrimental e ect. We want to give the children in our village the foundations of knowledge of God and all the amazing things he has done and continues to do that we hope will stay with them as they go through their lives. Hence the Church Summer Club was started two years ago and continued this year.
Our theme this year was “Bible Superheroes”. One of our four afternoon activities was focused on telling the story of and preparing a graphic illustration of: Noah and the Ark, Daniel in the Lions Den, Jonah
and the Whale, and David and Goliath, each of which has an important lesson for today. The kids also made Bird Boxes, a Bug Hotel, jewellery, all of which included a cross, and painted a tile with a bible theme.
The mornings were spent in Campoverde Square (Plaza Florida) and the park behind it. The day started with a prayer and then fun and games with Marylyn. She took them through their paces with exercise, dance and team games. Everyone then played French Cricket and football.
Lunch was at a local bar, the Tipsy Cow, where the children were fed and watered and spent time playing on all the children’s equipment before walking to the Church and Community Hall, known as The Shed, for their afternoon activities.
The whole Summer Club was
nished o with an End of the Show Show on Friday August 25. Lots of the children turned up with their family, friends, neighbours and supporters. The grand nale was the singing of this year’s song: This Little Light of Mine I’m Gonna Let It Shine.
All-in-all the whole Church Summer Club of 2023 was a huge success. We had 72 children on our register, with an average attendance each week of 33 plus 20 helpers. The total cost was covered by donations from within the community. Special thanks go to all our helpers, too numerous to mention.
We are con dent that all the children now have more knowledge of God than they did before and we hope and pray that they will remember and draw on that knowledge throughout their lives. Thanks be to God.

Discover the beautiful town of Guadalest –one of Costa Blanca’s little gems
Guadalest has to be one of the most charming and scenic places to visit on the Costa Blanca. Just a thirty minute drive inland from Benidorm, it is full of history, character and natural beauty. The town has a small population, of around 200 habitants, who originally lived within the protection of the castle walls. Today, you can enter the castle, called Castillo San José, through a small tunnel cut through the rock at the San Jose gate. The area inside the walls also include the ancient city dungeon, the bell tower, the Orduña House, a Parish Church and the Moorish forti ed building called Alcozaiba. The houses the Moors lived in then were built outside the San Jose gate, and this part of the town, named El Arrabal, is where you can now nd pretty craft shops, boutiques, quaint museums and restaurants all dotted around authentic cobbled streets. The River Guadalest ows through the area and has been dammed to form a reservoir below the town, this is a de nite must see as you will encounter some spectacular views!
The best place to park is at the Tourist Information O ce located on Avenida de Alicante, 03517 El Castell de Guadalest (Tel: 965 885 298). Here you will nd maps and information to guide you through the di erent museums and places of interest. You can also nd out where the best areas are to swim in the reservoir, and be informed about where there is

End in sight for rainwater basin works at Dona Ines housingdevelopment
Work on the enlargement of the rainwater drainage basin on the N-332, in the Doña Inés housing development, which began on 17 July, and which receives water from the drainage basin next to the Los Mercados site and from the ditch on the east side of the N-332, is progressing at a very good pace. According to those in charge of Aguas del Arco Mediterráneo (AGAMED) in Torrevieja, the construction of this lamination pond will be completely nished before the end of 2023.
After its execution, the pond will have a storage capacity
of 14,000 m3 to minimise the ooding episodes su ered by the residents of this residential area of Torrevieja, seven times more capacity than the current one, as the existing lamination pond has a low capacity of about 2. Even in low intensity rainfall, it lls up and over ows, causing ooding in the Doña Inés housing estate, sometimes making it necessary to cut o tra c and making it impossible for residents to access and leave their homes.
In order to minimise ooding in the Doña Inés urbanisation and given the size of the ows owing into the area where
the lamination basin is located, Torrevieja Town Council and AGAMED considered it necessary to enlarge the existing basin, so as to have a greater storage capacity for the water coming from the existing transversal drainage works.
The surface area of the lamination basin being built is 4,533 square metres and the average depth is 3.2 metres. The overall construction budget is 570,505 euros (VAT included) and the works are scheduled to be completed in ve months, meaning that they will be fully nished before the end of the year.

Keith is the Campoverde sunflower challenge winner
The latest Campoverde Sun ower Challenge has nished with local resident Keith Estlin declared this year’s winner with a sun ower 256 centimetres high. The competition is organised by Campoverde Church in the Community as part of its fund raising for the annual Church Summer Club.
The Sun ower Challenge event organiser James McAllister from Campoverde Church said “this is a popular annual event that brings out the competitive instincts of local gardeners, but also serves the added purpose of raising funds for local kids, with each competitor paying 5 Euros for two sun ower seeds.
When questioned on the secret of his success Keith said. “I water twice a day, rst thing in the morning then later in the evening”. In addition to his watering schedule Keith also feeds with a liquid feed twice a week. Should he forget any part of his routine, then his wife Penny is always on hand to remind him to water and feed.
Keith puts his success down to his many years in the navy, where he reached the rank of Commodore. Keith said, “I have travelled the world and seen many lovely gardens and exotic plants. I was even an enthusiastic grower of Chrysanthemums during the 18 years we lived in France. But I can genuinely say I got more satisfaction out
of growing this sun ower than anything else.
If you would like to enter next year’s Campoverde Sun ower Challenge then

Parkinson’s signs that could indicate the onset of the disease
Parkinson’s is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that a ects the central nervous system, speci cally the nerve cells that control movement. It is characterised by a gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in a region of the brain called black matter.
It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, after Alzheimer’s disease.
The symptoms of the disease, and the most recognised ones, are motor symptoms: tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia or slowness in movements, gait alteration, and postural re exes.
There may also be changes in the voice, facial expression, and handwriting. As the disease progresses, the symptoms can worsen, and other problems may appear, such as depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
Doctor Erika Torres, head of the Advanced Neuroscience Unit at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Alicante, explains what Parkinson’s disease symptoms consist of, the tests for its detection, and which risk factors are modi able.
Frequent Age of Parkinson’s
The disease usually appears in the sixth decade of life, and the risk of it developing increases with age, however, it is not uncommon to be diagnosed before 50 or 40 years of age.
Parkinson’s Symptoms in Adult Patients
Motor Symptoms
Motor symptoms are an essential part of the diagnostic criteria and the key symptoms of the disease.
Motor symptoms include a tremor, although not all patients with tremors have Parkinson’s disease, and not all Parkinson’s disease patients present tremors.
There are patients that, on the other hand, show movement defects where rigidity and slowness in movements predominate, associated with diminished facial expression and gait instability.
There can also be alterations in posture and postural re exes, responsible for the falls su ered by these patients, generally in more advanced stages of the disease.
Non-Motor Symptoms
As for the non-motor symptoms, these are related to: gastrointestinal alterations (constipation), cognitive alterations, sleep alterations, dysautonomic alterations, language alterations, pain, and emotional alterations such as anxiety and despondency.
Tests for Parkinson’s Diagnosis
The diagnosis of the disease is clinical, and is mainly based on the interview with the patient and a physical examination by a neurologist with experience in the movement disorder eld. However, there are also complementary examinations that can help reach a diagnosis in questionable or somewhat more complex cases.
For this, a general blood test is performed, along with a cranial CT scan or a cerebral MRI, which help rule out systemic diseases and structural cerebral pathologies that may produce similar symptoms.
“We must consider that not all patients present all symptoms or evolve in the same way, since this disease has a signi cant variability in its expression,” explains Dr Torres.
Parkinson’s, a Hereditary Disease?
Most Parkinson’s disease cases have an idiopathic cause; however, there is a small percentage that is related to family inheritance and, therefore, is or genetic origin. This would be approximately 15% of cases.
To be somewhat more speci c,
around 2-3% of cases of late onset will be caused by a mutation, and 50% of cases of early onset will also be traced to a genetic cause.
We can group risk factors into two categories: genetic and non-genetic.
As for non-genetic factors, these in turn can be divided into modi able and non-modi able risk factors.
Non-Modi able Risk Factors
Non-modi able risk factors are age, gender, and race.
Getting older can increase the risk of developing the disease, but it does not seem to be the main aetiological risk factor.
It is unlikely for gender to in uence the risk of su ering from the disease, but it is slightly more common in men than
in women.
Additionally, the disease has been observed to be less prevalent on the African continent, compared to Europe and North America.
Modi able Risk Factors
Modi able risk factors include smoking and exposure to pesticides, which increase the risk of developing the disease, while physical exercise, when practised energetically in middle age, can protect us from su ering this pathology; consumption of ca eine or tea also seems to protect us from developing Parkinson’s disease.
At Quirónsalud we have specialists in Advanced Neuroscience to help you detect the symptoms of the disease. Bring your questions to the team.

New road markings are being rolled out all over Spain after starting o on just a handful of highways, and the tra c authority wants to ensure everyone knows what they mean.
Broken lines and what are known as ‘dragon’s teeth’ began to appear along each side of roads in 2021, but only in a few towns – although now, they are gradually spreading out all over the country.
The General Directorate of Tra c (DGT), part of Spain’s transport ministry, explains that ‘dragon’s teeth’ –so named because of their shape – are a series of triangles painted along both edges of a road, with the apex, or point, facing inwards towards the centre.
They are normally found at the entrance to towns or built-up areas from a main highway, where the speed
limit drops.
When drivers ‘enter’ the ‘dragon’s jaw’, they should begin slowing down in preparation.
The idea of this is to prevent suddenly reduction in speed upon sight of a sign showing the much lower limit, which can lead to rear shunts if cars behind do not react quickly enough.
According to the DGT, the ‘dragon’s teeth’ markings work by giving the driver the illusion of the road becoming narrower, which means they instinctively take their foot o the accelerator.
In reality, this is not the case, since there is no prohibition on driving on top of the markings.
Similar, relatively-new road markings are broken lines in a zig-zag pattern, painted along a stretch of
approximately 30 metres. These aim to warn drivers of an imminent zebra crossing, so they can slow down and be ready to stop in time. Is it illegal if you don’t stop at a zebra crossing?
Although it is very common for drivers in Spain to fail to stop at zebra crossings without a tra c light unless a pedestrian is actually on it at the time, they are, in fact, legally required to slow down upon the approach and, if anyone is waiting on the roadside to cross, to stop and allow them to do so. Not stopping at a zebra crossing does not often lead to a ne, but it can, and police have the power to do so –and they typically will if they consider the failure to stop to be particularly dangerous.
Driving licence exchange
Victoria moved to Spain 20 years ago and set up an interpretation and admininistration support business and has been self employed for over 7 years working in the Orihuela Costa area.
Victoria is legally registered as a representative at the tra c o ce so clients don’t have to attend. Victoria is given an appointment via email every 1 to 2 weeks at the tra c o ce. She can also assist with booking Medical certi cate appointments also and can give advice on what is involved and what documentation is required.
Victoria meets her clients to complete the application paperwork and then attends the tra c o ce and then continues to be the point of contact for the application throughout providing a timeline update to the client when it moves to manufacturing stage and emailing the 3 month temporary driving authorisation.
Should the tra c o ce need to clarify any part of the application or require anything added, they email Victoria who gets the application back on track as quickly as possible.
Victoria also provides the service of redirecting the postage from Madrid to the tra c o ce. This procedure avoids any postal issues that clients commonly experience. Once the license is con rmed as ready for collection in Elche Victoria will attend on the clients behalf, sign for it and arrange to meet the client to handover their new Spanish license.
PLEASE NOTE – Victoria will be continuing to provide the service after the September 15th deadline.
Those that started their residencia more than 6 months ago will be
driving illegally from 15th September but can still apply to exchange their licence without problem. It’s a major confusion and misunderstanding

Players in Spanish women’s football league to strike for better pay & conditions
Players in the Spanish women’s league are going to strike for better pay and conditions during the rst two rounds of the upcoming season, the main players’ union has said.
The announcement comes amid a crisis in Spanish football caused by the forced kiss of a Spain women’s player by the head of its football federation at the Women’s World Cup nal. ALSO READ: Spain opens legal case to try and force Rubiales out, as football chief breaks his silence.
The Asociación de Futbolistas Españoles (AFE) said in a statement that the strike seeks ‘fair and just treatment for the players’ including a reduction in the salary gap with men players of La Liga. The minimum salary for men in the rst division is €182,000 but for women, just €16,000.
The strike was called after negotiations for a new collective bargaining deal broke down with Liga

Abbey Anglers
On Tuesday the 29nd of August we shed the fourth round of the Autumn series at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillent. 19 anglers took part on what was a very warm sunny day with a slight breeze. I have mentioned before regarding lots of changes at the complex and as such we are having to chop and change the pegs that we shed. We ended up shing pegs A1 to 7 and 26 to 40. Peg 26 has been throughout the year’s one of the best pegs at El Bosquet and as such promotes discussion as to whether or not it should be pegged in the match. In my opinion if you leave it out then peg 27 becomes the yer so really I see no point.
One of our Belgium regulars Willy
F, the revamped women’s league that started last season.
The strike will impact games to be played on 8-10 September and 15-17 September.
AFE said it had the backing of other unions, including FUTPRO, which is representing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso after she was forcibly kissed by Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales during the Women’s World Cup awards ceremony on 20 August.
Spain’s women’s players reached their rst collective bargaining agreement in 2020.
Liga F, which represents the clubs, said that it is holding a meeting with the players’ unions on Monday.
Spain’s women’s football has experienced a spectacular rise in recent years. Besides winning the World Cup, Barcelona has won two of the past three Women’s Champions League titles.
Spain’s acting deputy Prime Minister, Yolanda Díaz and the country’s acting labour minister, tweeted: ‘All my support to the footballers of the Football League who go on strike to demand their rights.
Their conditions must improve: there must be a rise in the minimum wage and abolish partiality. You are being a reference in the defense of decent work and real equality.’
Moons was the man with the golden drawing arm and he was the latest to try his luck on peg 26. After a very slow start, he only caught a few mullet and a small carp in the rst two hours, his peg came to life and he never stopped catching carp till the end of the match. Willy shed the feeder with pellets or maize and weighed 34.5kg.
In second place was Steve “Cinderella” Higgins from the other very hot peg, peg 1. Steve has been struggling of late with the heat and it was rumoured that he was not attending matches due to the extreme heat and the fact that his hair gel was melting. He made no mistake from peg one and caught carp on the pole with maggots for 17.66kg.
In third place was Terry Stroud, Terry
is a fairly new match angler but has come on leaps and bounds with his shing since joining the club. From unfancied peg 4 he weighed 16.04kg.
I show the full table of weights a thing I do not usually do but it shows that we caught over 200kg of sh at an average weight of just over 10kg. Not bad going on a very hot summer’s day.
Rods N Reels
The cub is still having its August sabbatical but the following day 5 anglers turned out and shed a small match on pegs 29 to 37.
The match was shed in two hours of heavy rain but was won by Terry Brindley with a fantastic 34.40kg from peg 29. Asked how he shed he replied, double 4mm pellet. Now anyone that
knows Terry will treat this remark with the contempt it deserves. Without question on looking at the quality carp he caught, he de nitely shed dirty great lumps of Paste.
