Brit arrested in Torrevieja after ten years on the run for murder In a significant development, the National Police in Torrevieja, Spain, have arrested Glenn Wathall, a 65-year-

old British fugitive wanted in the United Kingdom for the murder of his partner in 1990. Wathalla, hailing from Burton

on Trent in Staffordshire, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1999 for the brutal killing that occurred on Christmas Day. However, in February 2015, while out on parole, he managed to flee the UK and had remained at large until just over two weeks ago. Wathall’s ability to evade capture was attributed to his use of multiple identities and a lack of a permanent address. He reportedly resided with elderly and vulnerable British women, many of whom struggled with addiction issues or intellectual impairments, providing him with economic support. Spanish detectives revealed that Wathall is now in custody, and they await a judge’s decision on whether he should be extradited to the United Kingdom to face the charges against him. The investigation began in May when UK authorities, utilizing Interpol, informed the National Police of the

potential presence of the fugitive in Spain, specifically in the vicinity of Torrevieja. British authorities emphasised Wathall’s potential danger and reported that he had recently been living with two British women, both of whom had died, one of them suddenly. Officers managed to locate an individual matching the received images, but he had been living in Spain since 2017 under a different identity to avoid detection, residing in the homes of several British women. The UK authorities also provided the National Police with license plate details of two vehicles believed to be used by Wathall, both of which were found abandoned in Torrevieja. The breakthrough leading to Wathall’s arrest came from information related to his current partner. Spanish police had been monitoring her property on a residential estate in the town, ultimately intercepting the

suspect as he left his home in late November. Wathall was promptly arrested and handed over to a judge who will determine the course of his extradition to the United Kingdom. Wathall’s criminal history includes imprisonment for murder and a life sentence. Despite being released, he breached bail conditions in February 2015 in the Stafford area, leading to his status as “wanted for recall to prison.” In April of this year, Crimestoppers issued a renewed appeal for information regarding his whereabouts, culminating in his recent apprehension in Torrevieja.

Controversial development sparks outcry

Plans for the construction of 954 homes on an untouched stretch of the Orihuela Costa have ignited criticism from the Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE) association. The Orihuela Council’s proposal for a 159,000 square meter urbanization at Mil Palmeras is currently under a 45-day period of public display and consultation. Situated between the Dehesa de Campoamor urbanization to the north and Pilar de la Horadada to the south, the proposed development, known as sector ‘B1b Mil Palmeras,’ takes into account conditions set by the Environmental Assessment Commission two years ago. ASE President, Miguel Angel Pavon, vehemently opposes the approval of these proposals, labeling it as a “complete nonsense” and criticizing the

commitment to building up an already overcrowded coastline. In response, ASE intends to submit an alternative plan to the Orihuela Council, advocating for the reclassification of the contentious sector as an “ecological corridor” linking the protected area of the Sierra Escalona to the sea. This proposal aims to prioritize environmental conservation and protect the flora and fauna of the region, including the endangered cathead jarilla. Under the proposed development, a green space of over 32,000 square meters is earmarked for preservation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the region’s biodiversity. Specifically, efforts will be made to safeguard endangered species like the cathead jarilla, reflecting a

commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the controversial plans include provisions for new primary and secondary schools within the area. If approved, the development is expected to accommodate 2,385 additional residents, raising concerns about the potential strain on local infrastructure and services. The battle over the fate of Mil Palmeras continues as environmental advocates and community members rally against what they perceive as a threat to the region’s natural beauty and ecological balance. As the public consultation period unfolds, both proponents and opponents of the development eagerly await the decision that will shape the future of this unspoiled Orihuela Costa stretch.

Spanish police seize 11 tonnes of cocaine In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Spanish authorities have successfully confiscated 11 tonnes of cocaine and apprehended 20 individuals in two separate operations targeting the illegal smuggling of narcotics concealed within shipping containers, as announced by the National Police. The illicit drugs, originating from Colombia, traversed through Ecuador before being intercepted by law enforcement upon arrival at two distinct ports in Spain – one located in the northwestern city of Vigo and the other in Valencia. The largest-ever drug seizure in Galicia, amounting to 7.5 tonnes of cocaine, occurred in Vigo. The illegal substance was cleverly concealed within a shipment of frozen tuna. Investigators uncovered that a criminal organization had exploited a frozen seafood company as a front

for transporting the drugs from South America to Spain. Simultaneously, a separate operation in Valencia resulted in the confiscation of 3.4 tonnes of cocaine hidden in false bottoms of shipping containers. The police, while not disclosing specific operation dates, confirmed that both raids took place recently. Among the 20 arrested individuals, the majority were identified as Albanians, with additional arrests including a Colombian, a Dominican national, and several Spaniards. Notably, a Galician businessman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was implicated for allowing the criminal organization to utilize his fishing company as a front for drug transportation. Antonio Martínez Duarte, the head of the police’s drugs and organized crime unit, emphasized that the two operations

were not interconnected. However, he pointed out that both were believed to be orchestrated by Albanian organizations, specifically associated with the notorious ‘Balkan cartel.’ According to Duarte, this criminal network has attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies across Europe. Duarte stated, “Albanian mafia groups have been monopolizing the shipment of drugs for some time, not only in Europe but also in Latin America. These organizations have penetrated the entire supply chain, controlling the shipment from its origin to its final destination.” The successful operations underscore the ongoing challenges faced by European authorities in combating international drug trafficking and the sophisticated tactics employed by criminal organizations to facilitate their illicit activities.

Teen returns to UK after going missing in Spain 6 years ago In a surprising turn of events, British teenager Alex Batty has finally returned to the UK, six years after embarking on what was initially intended to be a two-week family holiday in Spain. The mysterious disappearance left his grandmother, who was also his guardian in Oldham, near Manchester, frantic with worry, as appeals for his whereabouts yielded no results until this week. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle of Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Alex Batty has arrived in England on a flight from Toulouse, France. The circumstances surrounding his extended absence remain unclear, prompting

authorities to consider whether a criminal investigation is warranted. Now 17 years old, Alex revealed to French officials that he had been living a nomadic lifestyle with his mother and grandfather in Spain, Morocco, and France. The family claimed to be part of a “spiritual community,” engaging in activities such as growing their own food, meditation, and contemplation of esoteric subjects. However, when his mother expressed a desire to relocate to Finland, Alex chose to leave the unconventional lifestyle behind. The teenager was discovered by a vigilant delivery driver, Fabien

Accidini, walking alone in the rain and darkness with a flashlight, rucksack, and skateboard. During their journey together, Alex disclosed that he had walked for four days, traversing the remote and rugged Pyrenees at night. Accidini shared that Alex mentioned being “kidnapped by his mother” years ago and described the spiritual community in France as “a bit strange.” Apparently disillusioned with his current circumstances, Alex expressed a desire for a future and decided to end his nomadic journey. British authorities are seeking Alex’s mother, Melanie Batty, in connection with

the teenager’s disappearance. French officials suspect she may be in Finland. Alex’s grandfather, David Batty, is believed to have passed away approximately six months ago. Detective Boyle emphasised that conversations with Alex would proceed at a pace comfortable for him, recognising the potential challenges of the overwhelming process. Despite the passage of six years, Alex remains a young person in need of support and understanding as the details surrounding his extraordinary journey continue to unfold.

Thirty-year sentence for San Fulgencio man The Provincial Court of Alicante has delivered a verdict sentencing a man to a cumulative 30 years in prison for charges including rape, robbery, and attempted murder against his former partner. The ruling, issued by Section First, is subject to appeal. The accused, currently in prison, had pleaded not guilty during the trial held in late October. According to the court’s decision, the convicted man is obligated to compensate his ex-partner with just over €154,000 for moral damages, injuries sustained, and the theft of money and valuables from her home. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed restraining orders on the defendant, prohibiting any form of communication with the victim. The accused faced charges of sexual assault, resulting in a 13-year sentence; attempted murder, leading to an additional 12 years; and robbery with violence, resulting in five more years of incarceration. The harrowing events unfolded on 2nd May, 2022, in San Fulgencio, where the accused forcibly entered the home of his Russian ex-partner. The court established that the assailant broke in through a ground floor window, seizing cash and valuables amounting to €4,108. Upon the victim’s return home, a violent confrontation ensued. The

defendant physically assaulted her, knocking her down the stairs while demanding money. The assault continued in the basement, where he sexually assaulted her and later attempted to strangle her with a dress. Believing her to be dead, the accused proceeded to spray a bathroom disinfectant on her genitals to erase traces of the assault. He also spread a quilt blanket in preparation to dispose of her body. However, the victim regained consciousness, prompting the assailant to demand money and her credit card, forcing her to accompany him to a bank. Attempting to escape, the victim sought help inside the bank, leading to the accused’s arrest by the Civil Guard. The woman suffered cuts, bruises, and contusions. The court deemed the victim’s testimony as “convincing” and highlighted the lack of foundation in the defendant’s exculpatory version. The ruling affirmed the credibility of the victim’s consistent account throughout the legal proceedings, emphasizing the absence of doubts regarding the truthfulness of her statements. During the trial, the victim recounted her singular focus on survival during the assault, expressing fear that her children would discover her with a knife in her chest.

Zara halts campaign amid criticism of Gaza resemblance Global fashion retailer Zara, under the umbrella of Inditex, has retracted an advertising campaign following widespread backlash over images that critics argue bear a resemblance to scenes of corpses in white shrouds in Gaza. The contentious campaign, featuring statues wrapped in white, prompted a surge of online criticism and calls for a boycott from pro-Palestinian activists. Zara responded with a statement on its Instagram account, expressing regret for what it termed a “misunderstanding” surrounding the images. Zara clarified that the campaign, created in July and photographed in September, showcased a series of images depicting unfinished sculptures

in a sculptor’s studio. The purpose was to highlight craft-made garments in an artistic context. The company stated that the campaign predated the Hamas attacks on Israel in October and the subsequent bombings of the Gaza Strip. The brief statement read, “Unfortunately, some customers felt offended by these images, which have now been removed, and saw in them something far from what was intended when they were created. Zara regrets that misunderstanding and we reaffirm our deep respect towards everyone.” Among the images causing controversy, one featured a model carrying a mannequin wrapped in white, another showed a bust lying on the floor, and a third displayed a

mannequin without arms. Tens of thousands of complaints flooded Zara’s Instagram account, with individuals asserting that the images resembled photographs of corpses draped in white shrouds in Gaza. Subsequently, six posts showcasing the campaign were deleted from Zara’s Instagram page. As of last Tuesday afternoon, the photos, initially visible on Zara’s online store homepage on Monday morning, were no longer accessible on the website or through its app. The company’s move to retract the campaign aims to address concerns and reaffirm its commitment to respect for all customers.

Brit in Benidorm gets 133-years for child pornography and abuse In a landmark decision, a 27-year-old British man residing in Benidorm has been handed a staggering 133year prison sentence by the Alicante Provincial Court for his involvement in the creation and distribution of child pornography, as well as the sexual abuse of minors. Originally, prosecutors had sought a term exceeding 211 years for the heinous crimes committed by the convicted individual, whose identity remains undisclosed. However, the court ruled that the maximum time behind bars would not surpass 20 years, reflecting the severity of his most egregious offense. In addition to the lengthy prison term, the offender has been ordered to pay €6,000 in compensation to each of the three children who were victims of his abuse. The crimes in question occurred between 2019 and 2020. The British national was found guilty on multiple charges, including the production and distribution of child pornography, cyberbullying, corruption of minors, and sexual abuse against the children featured in his explicit videos. Prosecutors revealed that the defendant had contacted 27 children through social media, persuading 13 of them to

expose themselves naked or engage in sexual acts. The incriminating videos were discovered stored on two hard drives and a mobile phone seized during a search of the offender’s residence in Benidorm. During the trial, the convicted individual admitted to possessing explicit underage material but claimed that it was obtained through “Dark Web” downloads for personal use or sent to him by third parties via email or the ‘Telegram’ phone app. Despite his denials, the court, supported by expert testimony

detailing the presence of the incriminating videos on his electronic devices, rejected the defendant’s claims. The charges encompassed not only the possession of illicit material but also the active distribution of paedophilic content online and the recruitment of young individuals appearing in the videos he produced. The convicted individual has the option to appeal the sentence to the Valencian Supreme Court, marking a crucial juncture in the legal proceedings surrounding this disturbing case.

How can Whitney Houston, Nirvana and Bob Marley help your savings? In many of the bars along the Spanish Costas, the music of these artists can often be heard. Most of us will have grown up listening to them. But what do they have to do with your savings? Exodus Spanish expats aim for a long-term return above inflation with investments and tax efficiency in their new homeland. In the same way, we pass down our music heritage to future generations, many of us also want to leave money to them. Family members often live in our former country. Therefore, financial planning and investment recommendations must be holistic to consider clients’ needs and offer diversification. All Apologies Since covid, central banks began hiking interest rates in earnest because of rising inflation. Mortgage

interest rates rose first, then deposit savings. Now headline rates appear generous in places we used to live, such as the UK. Spanish rates have not been so competitive. What has happened to investment portfolios in the same period? Most managed portfolios historically feature stocks (shares) and bonds. Theoretically when one went down the other went up. Over the last two years, both bonds and stocks have proved volatile so current high interest rates appear attractive. Same script different cast Other diversifying assets, such as infrastructure and property, have now made their way into peoples’ portfolios to counter this. One option to use is music royalties. The more the music is played, the more income is generated. This acts as a hedge when bonds and stocks are volatile. One of the

investments companies that Seagate uses includes this in their portfolios and receives royalties from the above artists. For those of our clients who are invested in this way, it provides a ‘Higher Love’ when ‘Sun is Shining’ is played in a local bar or one of their grandkids buys ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’. The music and the income stream have been around long before current high interest rates and will continue afterwards. How will I know? If you would like to find out more about investment diversification, call us today. For a free no-obligation review of your investments, call us on 965704338 or email: contact@Seagatewealth.es

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP This week’s first significant release for the pound was the Claimant Count Change, which came out on Tuesday morning. Forecasts expect the number of people claiming unemploymentrelated benefits during the previous month to rise from 17.8K to 20.3, but it came in lower than expected and below last month’s reading at 16K. The latest growth data was also released on Wednesday, coming in lower than expected at -0.3%. Forecasters did expect the UK economy to shrink, with monthly GDP predicted to fall to -0.1% from 0.2%. Services, contract manufacturing, and construction, which are considered the three main industry sectors in the UK, all showed declining outputs. The most impactful event of the week was Thursday’s Bank of England interest rate meeting. Policymakers opted to hold rates steady in their meetings yesterday and although the outcome was the same as the Federal Reserve the day before, the sentiment behind the decisions was markedly different. Whereas the Fed’s market-moving comments from Jerome Powell suggested interest rate cuts were coming “into view”, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey reiterated that monetary policy would remain restrictive for some time yet. What was perhaps even more insightful into the Bank of England’s stance was that three of the nine policymakers voted to raise rates again. Sterling reacted positively to the news, extending earlier gains and hitting the highest level since August. Finally, the UK’s Flash Manufacturing and

Services PMIs were released this morning. The manufacturing business activity data came in below the 47.6 forecast at 46.4, but services exceeded expectations at 52.7, against the 51.0 predicted. The services industry has now been back in expansion for the last two months, pointing to the fastest rise in private sector business activity since June.

EUR The European Central Bank also held rates this week, announcing its decision on Thursday at 1:15pm. There was only a 2.7% chance of a rate cut ahead of the monetary policy meeting despite inflation falling to 2.4% across the region. Since the CPI inflation data release, markets have increased bets on ECB rate cuts in 2024 from around 85 basis points to 140 over the last two weeks. The first of these is expected as early as March, and throughout 2024, markets have priced in as many as six quarter-point cuts. This is despite the hawkish narrative from the narrative from the central bank, with ECB President Christine Lagarde saying, “We should absolutely not lower our guard.” French and German Services and Manufacturing PMIs were released today (Friday 15th December). French flash manufacturing and services PMIs both landed lower than expected at 43.3 and 44.3, respectively, and down from last month’s readings. The German flash manufacturing PMI came in as expected at 43.1, and the services PMI was below forecast at 48.4. All the data still points to business activity falling below the key 50 level, which distinguishes growth from contraction.

the combination of activities promoted by the school with the collaboration of the City Council, also involving families and Rafal citizens.” In this way, throughout the entire last year, those students who traveled to the center on foot, by bike or scooter were rewarded, and actions were carried out such as the celebration of Bicycle Day, “with workshops and activities.” recreational activities to promote the use of alternative transport, or the European Mobility Week, in which theoretical classes on road safety were given to Primary students, with practical classes on the cycle-safe route that links the educational centers with the municipal sports facilities. , the director has indicated. The Councilor for the Environment and Sustainable

Development, Víctor García, reported that the activities also had the collaboration of the Rafal Local Police, who gave a road safety education workshop to the boys and girls of Early Childhood Education so that “the little ones learned the meaning of the signs and how they can move safely through the municipality,” he indicated. For his part, the Councilor for Education, Gabriel Valero, thanked the work carried out by the school during the past year and the involvement of the students and their families in the activities carried out, at the same time that he highlighted the importance of raising awareness in society, “and especially to future generations, in caring for the environment and its surroundings, so that we can all enjoy it for many years.”

A great time was had by all

The Adapt Theatre Group is very happy to announce that our pantomime “Ali Baba and the Four and a Half Thieves” was a great success and performed to four sell-out audiences in the Casa de Cultura, San Pedro del Pinatar from 30th November to 3rd December. As usual there was a great mix of both Spanish and English speaking audiences and we are now expert in

appealing to both languages and senses of humour to make sure that everyone has a great time. Both adults and children clapped and sang along to the musical numbers and participated in the obligatory boos and aahhs. And the best news, 2000€ was raised for the AFEMAR charity in San Pedro which works with young people with mental

health problems. This charity does tremendous work with people from all over the Mar Menor and is always in need to extra help. A big thank you to all your readers who came along and supported us and if anyone is interested in getting involved next year, please contact Eric on: 656 36 10 98 or e-mail: ericberg2@hotmail.com

Select your preferred time duration, add a comment if you want, and tap the arrow icon in the bottom-right corner to share your live location If you wish to stop sharing your location before the time you set for it, tap Stop Sharing at the bottom of your location-sharing message. This works for both group and personal chats. Sharing Your Location on WhatsApp for iPhone Here is how to share your live location on WhatsApp using an iPhone: 1. Open the chat you’d like to

share your location to and tap the + icon. 2. Select Location from the menu that pops up. 3. Press Share live location or Send your current location. Benejúzar Town Hall installs an automatic defibrillator in the municipal sports centre The device will be located outside and next to the football pitch for rapid emergency response in case of cardiorespiratory arrest. Benejúzar. 14th December 2023 The municipal sports facilities of Benejúzar are now a cardio-protected area. The Benejúzar Town Hall, through its Sports Department, has acquired an automatic defibrillator to be installed inside the sports facilities, next to the football pitch. The aim of this action, as explained by the councillor responsible for the area, Cayetano Jara, is that “it is accessible to the entire population in case of emergency, and to provide a rapid response to those who suffer a cardiorespiratory arrest until the arrival of specialized health services. It is an automated external defibrillator (AED) with automatic recording, “a simple device, designed to be used by non-medical personnel, which provides voice instructions throughout the CPR process and allows the heartbeat to be restored through electric shocks in the event of cardiorespiratory arrest,” explained Jara. The councillor stressed that

facilitating access to this type of device and its use “can be vital for recovering a person while awaiting the arrival of the emergency medical services”. For this reason it has been placed outside, “so that it is accessible to the entire population during matches, training sessions and sporting activities that take place there in order to save lives in the event of an emergency”, said Jara. The device has been purchased by the City Council

at a cost of 2,109 euros, and will be accompanied by a panel of clear and concise instructions, so that citizens can carry out the process of cardiopulmonary resuscitation properly. For his part, the Mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases, has valued very positively this action, which adds to the defibrillator incorporated into the patrol car of the Local Police in 2018, and has indicated that “all investment is little when it comes to saving lives”.

Popular Christmas films to watch this festive season Love Actually Against the backdrop of aged hasbeen rock star Billy Mack’s (Bill Nighy’s) Christmas themed comeback cover of “Love Is All Around”, which he knows is crap and makes no bones about it, much to his manager Joe’s (Gregor Fisher’s) chagrin as he promotes the record, several interrelated stories about romantic love and the obstacles to happiness through love for Londoners are presented in the five weeks preceding Christmas. Daniel’s (Liam Neeson’s) wife has just died, leaving him to take care of his adolescent stepson Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) by himself. Daniel is uncertain how to deal with Sam and his problems without his wife present, especially in light of a potential budding romance within their household. Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) have just gotten married. They believe that Peter’s best friend and best man Mark (Andrew Lincoln) hates Juliet, but won’t say so to his or her face

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation It’s Christmas time and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration, but things never run smoothly

for Clark, his wife Ellen and their two kids. Clark’s continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon.

Surviving Christmas Wealthy Chicago ad executive Drew Latham has long avoided the family traditions of Christmas, but has dreaded being alone on the actual day. So when his tropical Christmas vacation with girlfriend Missy Vangilder falls through and Missy breaks up with him in the process, a selftherapy session leads Drew to decide to relive his best childhood Christmases. With his loved ones long-gone, he decides to rent a family: the Valcos, the current owners of his childhood home in suburban Chicago. Tom Valco wants nothing to do with Drew until an exorbitant amount of money is involved; they draw up a contract which expires at the end of Christmas night. What Drew doesn’t (or refuses to) realize is that the Valcos are having their own problems, which his presence exacerbates. Can the Valcos endure their unexpected guest? If they can, will the money solve their problems? Meanwhile,

will Drew come to realize what he wants in life and how to achieve it?

Four Christmases Brad and Kate have been together three years, in love, having fun, doing all sorts of things together with no intention of marriage or children. Christmas morning, they’re on their way to Fiji, having told their two sets of divorced parents that they’re off to do charity work. Through a fluke, they have no choice but to visit each of their four idiosyncratic parents. As the day progresses, Brad and Kate remember growing up, each learns more about the other, and Kate realizes that her life may not be as good as it could be. Do they know each other well enough to weather the storms families bring? The Family Stone Everett Stone, who made it on Wall Street, returns home for Christmas with his new girlfriend Meredith Morton. His ultra-liberal, anti-conventional, rustic Connecticut family doesn’t exactly warm to the outsider; despite her best efforts to please the prospective in-laws, she looks, sounds, and acts like the conservative

bigots they hate, while various Stones have their own problems. Only matriarch Sybil Stone’s unshakable maverick son Ben gives her a chance, and as Everett won’t actively turn against either, she feels more supported by him and a weird romance blossoms. Feeling beleaguered, Meredith calls in help from her easygoing sister Julie, who proves no help to her but soon develops a chemistry with Everett, so everything could shift if they dared follow their hearts.

Last Christmas It’s the Christmas season 2017 in London. Ever since recovering from a serious health issue which could have easily taken her life, that health issue which culminated on Christmas day last year, Kate, whose family emigrated from the former Yugoslavia in escaping the Baltic wars, is a changed person, and not for the better. Now irresponsible and self-absorbed, she is running out of friends’ couches on which to sleep in they coming to final straws with her, this couch surfing which she still finds preferable to going home to her parents’, especially in not wanting to deal with her tactless and overbearing mother. Working

as a salesclerk at Yuletide, a year ‘round Christmas store which is entering its busiest time of year, she is continually close to hitting final straws with her boss as well, a Chinese woman who has assumed the name Santa for the business and who only keeps Kate on in remembering back to the time when she was an asset to the business. Kate now aspires to a life as a performer in musical theater, she working under the misguided belief that her chutzpah alone will get her work. Within this situation, Kate meets Tom, who she believes is coming on to her, she putting him off in he not being her type. But persisting, he ends up showing Kate another side of London and another side of life. But as Kate begins to have feelings for him and sees him as an important emotional support for her, he, whose intentions he admits are not romantic, begins to be harder and harder to find, all she knowing about him being that he volunteers in the night shift at a homeless shelter. In the two having some sort of bond, the question then becomes if they will ever come into sync together, factoring into the equation the reason for Tom’s persistence with her in the first place.

Santa Visits Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch It’s that time of year where we get together with friends and enjoy some ‘festive cheer’ and there was no exception to this when some of the branch members (shipmates) of the Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) did so at their recent annual Christmas Dinner & Dance held at the Lakeview Restaurant in Ciudad Quesada, Alicante. The festive spirit was set in motion at the Cava reception by the 15 strong group of singers that formed the ensemble of the Melody Makers, who performed a tremendous rendition of carols for the first hour to the nearly 50 strong shipmates and guests of the RNATB. The Melody Makers regularly practice at the Lakeview Restaurant and are a group that perform a variety of public performances at various times during the year, all in aid of their designated charity of Age Concern and on this occasion were able to collect a further 58.83 Euros during their performance. The RNATB traditionally have a raffle at all their main social functions, and this event was slightly different, in that it was an ‘extravaganza of a raffle’ with 28 prizes ranging from ‘a big cuddly Santa’ humongous his and hers individual hampers, through various festive items all the way through to vouchers for a local butcher and all funded by the

Branch at a cost of Euro 400. It would not be a Christmas Celebration without an appearance from Santa, and he duly arrived after the reception as all were taking their seats and although he left the reindeers outside, he did bring in two of his Elf’s to held in giving out the individual presents to all the ladies while having their photos taken. Although Santa left his reindeer team outside, they were acknowledged, as each of the dining tables were named after them. We were very fortunate to have a photographer, Tom Crawford of KSC.Photography. Services@gmail.com on hand to take individual photos during the reception and to ‘snap photos’ of the ladies receiving their present from Santa. Some of the photos and videos of the evening can be seen on the RNATB Facebook Page at https://www.facebook. com/royalnavytorreviejabranch Once Santa was on his way with his traditional Ho, Ho, Ho, the shipmates and guests ‘tucked into’ their del-ish meal provided by the Lakeview staff, including Bobby, Claudia, John, Mia and Snowy (very aptly name for this time of year). The shipmates are a combination of not only ex-Royal Navy, but also ex-Royal Marines, ex-Merchant Navy, ex-Army, and ex-RAF along with civilians from

nations including, Spain, Ukraine, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Ireland and Russia, to name but a few. It is truly fitting that so many nations should especially come together in harmony at this time of year to celebrate ‘peace and happiness to all mankind’ and it was only fitting that we were able to toast “one and all” in traditional ‘naval style’ with port. We were privileged that one of our guests was a Lieutenant Submariner from the Spanish Navy, who was also AKA ‘Elf Smiley’ and assisted Santa with giving out the ladies presents; the other AKA ‘Elf Happy’ was a ex-RN whirligig (helicopter) engineer. The RNATB hold many social events throughout the year and this event like many others was subsidised for branch shipmates from the branch general fund. These events do not happen ‘overnight by accident’ and take much planning and resourcing and therefore after the toast were special thank you’s and rounds of applause to all those shipmates involved, including Lenny, Angie, Maureen, Kath, Kim, Steve, Carl, Nicola, Ruth, and Paul as well as all those in attendance for making it the exhilarating event that it was. The Raffle was followed by much merriment and ‘shaking of the hoof’ – some called dancing. The shipmates are now looking forward to the next soiree of the Valentines Dinner in 2024.

Cruz Azul is celebrating its tenth year in 2023 My new man has 4 grown children from one marriage, and another two from a long term relationship. He told me that he has always spent Christmas with the whole of his family; amazingly, with both women, all of their blended offspring, his, and their parents. I commented that this was quite remarkable, and that they should all be commended for remaining on friendly terms and being able to do that. Last week I discovered he had booked a flight for himself back to the UK for Christmas. When exactly, was he going to tell me about his plans? I had been talking about Christmas since October, and he had said, ‘yeah that sounds great’, but now I see he was just pasifying me. I am shattered. He said he’d made no secret of things, and I knew he has always done this for years, and should have expected it. When I asked why I couldn’t be included in this big, friendly family meal, he eventually said that his women did not know about me. It’s changed everything and I don’t know what to do; he cannot see my point of view and is leaving in a few days. Your longer email tells me that friends have told you of his unreliability, the fact that he has no money of his own, and is known for latching onto single women who have a house and are comfortably off. You tell me you have already lent him a prepared to leave you alone at Christmas time; does that substantial amount of money. I am sorry to say that this not say it all? If this were me, I’d have his bags packed man could be using you, and playing you for a fool. He is and put on the porch for when he returned. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@ COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

Founded by Lyn Baines and Sue Thomason during the ‘crisis’ in Spain when pets were abandoned because people could not afford vet fees. Lyn and Sue wanted to encourage responsible pet ownership and to ensure no animal suffered because of lack of funds. When Cruz Azul agrees to help, the pet is vaccinated, microchipped and sterilised. Bit by bit, this is aiding responsible ownership and discouraging unlicensed breeding. Cruz Azul also promotes the management of cat colonies properly. This includes advice and cat traps and so many advantages….. cats are territorial, won’t allow other cats in, keep down the vermin population and, with sterilisation, the colony naturally reduces without harming the cats. President, Lyn Baines, was so happy when she spoke to us this week about an unexpected donation of 1,000€ from Worshipful Brother, George Noden, of the Luz de Murcia Lodge. “It means so much to us and the animals “ said Lyn. “The only way we raise money for them usually is through our popular donation centre in San Javier. We must thank George, and the Lodge Members for their generosity”.

The Luz de Murcia Lodge has been in existence for 28 years and has been based in Las Claras for the last 4 years. It is part of the Masonic Province of Murcia, which comprises of 6 masonic Lodges. Each of the Lodges will designate which charities they will support. They must be Murcian to qualify, along with the charities designated by the Province as a group. Recent charity donations by Luz de Murcia have included Afacmur, (Asociación de familiares de niños con cáncer de la Región de Murcia), AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer), Los Arcos Hospital, MABS Respite Home, and recently Cruz Azul. Luz de Murcia Lodge have an ongoing programme to

supply goods for Social Services to allocate to those in need in Los Alcazares. In addition Luz de Murcia Lodge, along with the Provincial Grand Lodge, supported the local community by providing equipment and goods during the two major floods to devastate the area . Aid was also sent to assist with the earthquake disaster which struck Lorca in 2011. Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. If you or someone you know needs help, or you would like to volunteer or donate, please call 693 017 616 or visit their website: www.cruzazulmurcia.com

“Arriving late is better than not Intensive surveillance of vans by DGT arriving”, slogan of the new DGT informative campaign In its traditional campaign for these dates, the DGT reminds us that, no matter how important the trip is (and Santa Claus’s trip is), the important thing is to arrive, even if it is late. In the radio spots, children are the protagonists, advising Santa Claus not to run so he can reach all the homes. The campaign can be seen and heard during the Christmas period on television, radio, print media, digital media, social networks, cinema and outdoors. Like every year around this time, the General Directorate of Traffic launches its traditional awareness campaign on the importance of having correct behavior on the road. The millions of trips that will take place by road in the coming weeks to meet with family and friends, leads this Organization to remember, once again, the importance of being careful behind the wheel. This year, the campaign is focused on one of the most important trips of the year: that of Santa Claus from his residence in Lapland to the homes of all the boys and girls who look forward to his visit. On this occasion, the arrival of Santa Claus is delayed more than expected and he does not come to the homes of the

little ones like every Christmas Eve, an unprecedented fact to which no one has an answer and which opens the news of all the media. Finally, and hours late, Santa Claus ends up arriving at the homes of all the boys and girls giving an important lesson: “Being late is better than not being there, even at Christmas.” With a friendly tone and playing with the illusion of the arrival of Santa Claus by the little ones and his extrapolation to the world of adults when they wait for their loved ones to meet again, the DGT once again reminds us of the importance of compliance with the rules of traffic. Answering a call while driving, looking at WhatsApp, having a drink or stepping on the accelerator more than is allowed are just some of the

facts that can truncate the reunion of many families. For the campaign, several 30”, 20” and 10” audiovisual pieces have been made that can be seen on television, cinemas and social networks. Two radio spots have also been created, where two children (Alexandra and Pepe) are the protagonists, advising Santa Claus not to run, that it is better to arrive late than not arrive at all. Pieces have also been made for outdoor, digital and print media. Likewise, a page has been created https://llegar.dgt. es, which attempts to raise awareness with messages to different road users of the responsibility they have when sharing the same limited space and in which the behavior of each one has consequences on the rest of the road users.

During the week of November 20th to 26th, the General Directorate of Traffic carried out a special surveillance campaign focused on the more than 2 and a half million vans that circulate on the roads, a type of vehicle that represents 7% of the total vehicle fleet. One of the elements that was controlled due to the importance of proper vehicle maintenance when making safe trips was the Technical Vehicle Inspection. On this occasion, 2,354 drivers (28.3% of the total) were reported for driving without a valid MOT. In addition, 325 were traveling with tires in poor condition and another 218 vans were immobilized for not meeting the minimum driving conditions. Throughout the week, agents from the Civil Guard Traffic Group controlled 137,143 vans (almost 13,000 more than in the

campaign carried out in 2022) and verified that 8,319 drivers failed to comply with some precept of traffic regulations. Another of the most common violations committed by van drivers was driving above the permitted limits, which are different from those of other vehicles (90km/h on highways and highways and 80km/h on conventional roads), which is why in which 1,852 drivers were reported. Furthermore, it is important to highlight another worrying fact detected by the agents in the preventive controls established as a result of the intensification of surveillance, and that is the fact that 371 drivers tested positive: 121 for alcohol and 250 for other drugs. OTHER VIOLATIONS In the seven days of the campaign, 492 van occupants

were reported for not using another of the essential elements in road safety that has saved the most lives since its invention, such as the seat belt. The loading of vehicles has been another of the precepts to control, because the weight and distribution of the load are vital in the event of an accident. On this occasion, 451 drivers were reported for exceeding the weight allowed in their vehicle and others 305 for carrying incorrect cargo disposition. It must be remembered that the greater the mass of the van, the greater the safety distance that must be maintained to stop the vehicle in time in the event of any unforeseen event. Regarding the documentation of both the vehicle and the driver, the 551 complaints made for this reason stand out, and another 204 for lacking mandatory insurance.

Abbey Anglers & Rods N Reels On Tuesday the 12th of December we fished the penultimate round of the winter series at The El Bosquet Complex.
