Compulsory mask-wearing reinstated in local health centres
In response to a significant surge in flu cases and respiratory infections, the Valencian Community has reinstated compulsory mask-wearing in hospitals and health centres as of Friday 5th January. The decision, enacted by the
regional Ministry of Health, comes as a precautionary measure to curb the escalating spread of respiratory illnesses. The move follows the national government’s decision last July to lift
the mask mandate, initially imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic, after being in effect for over three years. The resurgence of respiratory infections, however, prompted authorities to reinstate the mask requirement in healthcare settings. Between December 25 and 31, the
incidence of flu quadrupled in the Valencia region, surging from 142 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous week (December 18 to 24) to 551, as reported by the health ministry. Concurrently, cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) also increased from 192.8 to 258.2 per 100,000 people. Although the Covid-19 infection rate slightly decreased from 247.3 to 222.2 cases per 100,000, health officials remain vigilant. The Health Ministry has outlined specific situations where maskwearing is mandatory within hospital and health centre premises. This includes symptomatic individuals in shared spaces, professionals caring for symptomatic cases, emergency situations in hospital and primary care, waiting rooms where patients and families gather, and other scenarios aimed at protecting vulnerable populations. The management of
health departments, guided by their protocols and recommendations from Preventive Medicine services, may further specify additional areas for mandatory mask use. Furthermore, individuals working in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and those interacting with vulnerable patients are obligated to wear masks. A national family doctor group echoed these concerns on Thursday, urging the reintroduction of mask-wearing amidst rising infection rates. Fears of an uptick in cases following the Three Kings holiday weekend and the upcoming reopening of schools have intensified the call for preventive measures. Starting Monday (8th January), health centres throughout the Valencian Community will also offer a ‘walk-in’ service, allowing individuals to receive flu and Covid-19 vaccinations without the need for a prior appointment. This initiative aims to facilitate broader access to vaccinations, contributing to the region’s efforts to mitigate the impact of respiratory infections. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in adhering to these measures to safeguard public health.

Sadly, for others it will mean that the loneliness of Christmas will come around very quickly and another period of more sadness will follow. Loneliness does not always mean that you are alone. Many people are struggling each day caring For many this weekend may have been full of fun and laughter – watching parades, seeing the look of awe on the faces of children and perhaps meeting up with friends to celebrate. for a loved one and often feeling that they are not only alone but also finding it very difficult to watch a loved one go through the pain and heartache of illness such as Alzheimer´s and dementia etc. At HELP Vega Baja we have a welfare team of experienced nurses, listeners and others who generally wish to help in a practical way. When someone comes to us to find out what help is available, either from our charity or from the Spanish and UK benefit systems, they are often desperate for support. And there begins the journey… Volunteering in a welfare team can often mean that you join the family on their journey. We step in when invited and help where we can. Frequently people simply need a shoulder to lean on – someone to listen to them can make the world of difference. It can be a difficult
journey and sadly not everyone has a happy ending, but we remain by their side and “hold their hand” as best we can. Our Welfare volunteers are supported by other team members, the Welfare Co-ordinator and elective committee. We also must remember that we support many families and make a real difference. For example, we take them through the process of applying for support that can often provide the resources to bring in professional care which often can mean that the person diagnosed with a disability or illness is able to remain in their own home. Most importantly it also can make a huge difference
to their carers providing them with the chance to have some “me time”. Please note that ALL our services are offered FREE! Record number of earthquakes hit Alicante Province in 2023 Alicante province experienced a seismic surge in 2023, as revealed by figures released on Thursday by the National Geographic Institute. The data disclosed a remarkable 91 seismic movements ranging between 1.5 and 3.8 degrees on the Richter scale, marking a substantial 70.3% increase compared to the 64 earthquakes recorded in 2022. Breaking down the seismic activity by region, l’Alcoià emerged as the most affected area, registering a total of 29 earthquakes. Following behind, albeit at a considerable distance, was the Vega Baja, documenting 11 earthquakes in recent months. The Middle and Lower Vinalopó regions each experienced 8 earthquakes. In contrast, El Comtat, Alto Vinalopó, and l’Alacantí reported the fewest seismic movements, with only two earthquakes each in 2023. Several municipalities also bore
witness to multiple seismic events. Crevillent led with 6 earthquakes, followed by Guardamar del Segura and Los Montesinos with 3 each. Municipalities such as Hondón de los Frailes, Hondón de las Nieves, Algueña, Santa Pola, and Alcoy recorded 2 earthquakes each. While the surge in seismic activity has raised concerns, experts, including Sergio Molina, a professor at the University of Alicante and member of the Seismic Engineering and Risk Group (GIRS) of the UA, offer insights. Molina suggests that the increase may be attributed to various factors, emphasizing advancements in detection technology. He notes, “As the years go by, we have put out new stations and improved instruments, making the level of detection much more precise. As such, it can simply mean that our detection is better, it does not have to be related to
anything else.” Among the recorded magnitudes, the largest earthquake measured 3.8 degrees on the Richter scale and occurred on July 30 in Banyeres de Mariola. Other significant seismic events in 2023, by magnitude, include a 3.1-degree earthquake in Torrevieja on March 23, a 2.9-degree event along the Santa Pola coastline on January 19, and a 2.8-degree earthquake on the La Mata coast on May 28. While the rise in seismic activity warrants attention, experts highlight the importance of considering factors such as improved detection capabilities before drawing conclusions about potential seismic risks in the region. The data underscores the continuous need for monitoring and research in seismically active areas to enhance preparedness and response measures.

The lottery administrations that issued these numbers are also in luck because in the El Gordo Christmas 2023 draw they also distributed luck. The administration of Loterías Virgen del Carmen de Cox has sold the first prize of “El Niño” with
a complete series, ten tenths issued through the kiosks and website. This establishment also shared luck in the Christmas raffle with a fifth prize. Spain anticipates record-breaking Spanish footballer enni Hermoso testifies January 2024 in sexual assault case Madrid’s National Court has witnessed a significant development as Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso appeared to testify in the sexual assault case against the former president of the country’s football federation, Luis Rubiales. The case revolves around an incident where Hermoso was forcibly kissed on the lips by Rubiales following Spain’s victory over England in the Women’s World Cup Final in Sydney last August. Hermoso, the record scorer for Spain’s women’s team, provided her version of the events during a closed-door testimony, with the court refraining from releasing details about her statements. Spanish media reported from unconfirmed sources that she mentioned the kiss was not consensual during her testimony and revealed that she had been ‘harassed’ and ‘pressured’ to claim the incident was consensual. The 33-year-old athlete had previously mentioned receiving threats in the aftermath of the controversial kiss, although she did not provide further details. The incident triggered widespread outrage in the football community and led to one of the worst crises in the history of Spanish football. It prompted a boycott of the national team by World Cup-winning players and ultimately led to the resignation of Rubiales, despite his denial of any wrongdoing and his assertion that the kiss was consensual. As part of the legal proceedings, Rubiales is
banned from going within 200 meters of Hermoso. The Spanish state prosecutors have charged Rubiales with sexual assault and coercion, alleging that he tried to persuade Hermoso and her relatives to publicly downplay the incident. The court is also gathering testimony from other World Cup-winning players, coaches, and federation officials before deciding whether to proceed to trial. Among those investigated for allegedly trying to pressure Hermoso are former Spain women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda and other former federation officials. Rubiales had previously denied wrongdoing to the judge who imposed a restraining order on him, preventing any contact with Hermoso. Under a sexual consent law passed last year, Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty, as the law eliminated the distinction between ‘sexual harassment’ and ‘sexual assault’, penalizing any unconsented sexual act. FIFA has also imposed a three-year ban on Rubiales, effective until after the men’s 2026 World Cup, with his ban set to expire before the next women’s tournament in 2027. Rubiales resigned as the federation president and UEFA vice president on 10th September amid mounting pressure from lawmakers and players, and a day later, UEFA expressed gratitude for his service.
Spain is gearing up for a bustling start to the new year, with recent data from Turespaña, the Spanish tourism office, indicating a record-breaking anticipation of over 7.4 million seats for international flights to the country in January 2024. This figure reflects an impressive 13% surge compared to January 2023, which saw 6.6 million available seats. The substantial increase underscores Spain’s enduring allure as a premier travel destination and highlights positive momentum in the tourism sector. Analysing the forecast for January 2024 against the previous year, Turespaña identifies the United
Kingdom, Germany, and Italy as the main issuing markets that continue to perform exceptionally well. Notably, the UK demonstrates a 5.9% increase in seats, Germany experiences a substantial 12.2% surge, and Italy records an impressive 20.7% rise. Jordi Hereu, the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, expressed confidence in Spain’s tourism strength, stating, “This forecast confirms the strength of tourism in Spain, with data that predicts an excellent year in 2024, just as 2023 has been, where we have already surpassed pre-pandemic figures.” The growth extends beyond major European markets, with Poland and
Czechia experiencing growth rates exceeding 50%, indicative of accelerated expansion. Additionally, Ireland, the United States, Colombia, Austria, and Türkiye report significant increases of over 15%. British visitors continue to play a pivotal role in Spain’s vital tourism industry. In 2019, the country welcomed over 18 million arrivals from the UK, underscoring the significance of British tourism to Spain’s overall visitor numbers. As Spain positions itself for a robust January 2024, these optimistic projections signal a positive trajectory for the country’s tourism sector in the coming year.

Spain achieves lowest unemployment since 2007 In a positive turn of events, Spain witnessed a significant drop in unemployment, reaching its lowest level since 2007, as reported in the latest data for December 2023. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 4.59% compared to December 2022, resulting in a total of 2,707,456 unemployed individuals – a notable reduction of approximately 130,000 people. The closing of the year 2023 also marked near-record employment figures, with over 20.8 million people gainfully employed and affiliated with the Spanish Social Security system. The final statistics unveiled the most substantial annual job creation since 2018, excluding the postCovid recovery of 2021, with more than 539,000 additional workers entering the job market. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the challenging economic landscape marked by the inflation crisis and a record surge in interest rates. Despite the overall positive trend, three regions, namely Catalonia, Valencia, and La Rioja, experienced an increase in unemployment between November and December 2023. In contrast, the Balearic Islands
stood out with the highest increase in employment during the same period, boasting a remarkable 3.74% rise. Labour Minister Yolanda Díaz underscored the positive impact of employment policies, emphasizing that young people and women are the primary beneficiaries. According to Díaz, the total number of unemployed women reached its lowest point since 2008, with 1,616,973 women now employed. Additionally, youth unemployment witnessed a historic low, decreasing by 12,014 – the lowest figure in the entire historical series for any month.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his satisfaction with the employment trends, stating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), ‘Spain has created more than half a million jobs in 2023, and there are already almost 21 million [affiliated to social security]. Less youth unemployment, record female employment, and more permanent contracts. It is possible to grow, create jobs, and advance rights.’ The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect the government’s commitment to fostering a robust and inclusive job market despite economic challenges.

Euro one in ation sees year-end upturn Annual inflation in the Eurozone reversed its seven-month decline trend in December, with the harmonised consumer price index (HICP) showing a year-on-year increase of 2.9%, slightly below the expected 3%, according to flash estimates released by Eurostat on Friday. The monthly inflation rate edged up by 0.2%, signaling a departure from November’s 0.6% drop. Notable increases were observed in the prices of food, alcohol, and tobacco, which rose by 6.1% year-on-year, a slight decrease from the previous month’s 6.9%. Services costs remained stable at 4.0% year-onyear, while prices for goods other than energy decreased to 2.5% from 2.9%. Energy prices fell by 6.7%, marking a less severe drop compared to the 11.5% fall in November. Core inflation, excluding volatile components like energy and food, recorded a year-onyear rate of 3.4%, a marginal dip from November’s 3.6%, aligning with market expectations. In addition to consumer inflation, Eurostat also released producer price index (PPI) data for November 2023, revealing a 0.3% monthly contraction and an 8.8% year-on-year decrease. Italy reported an annual
inflation rate of 0.6% in December, slightly below the forecasted 0.7%, while Germany and France saw their inflation rates rise to 3.7% year-on-year, in line with expectations. In response to the latest inflation data, money markets have adjusted their expectations, anticipating fewer rate cuts from the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2024, settling at a reduced projection of 147 basis points. Government bond yields experienced a slight increase, with the German Bund’s yield climbing to 2.17%, and the Italian 10-year BTP yield advancing to 3.86%. European stock markets faced
headwinds on Friday, with the Euro Stoxx 50 index declining by 0.7%, and Spain’s IBEX 35 notably lagging with a 0.9% fall. In the December meeting, ECB President Christine Lagarde highlighted potential short-term upward pressures on inflation, emphasizing that the ECB has not yet considered rate cuts. Several ECB officials echoed this sentiment, cautioning against premature discussions on rate reductions. The latest ECB projections suggest a gradual normalization of inflation rates, with headline inflation expected to average 2.7% in 2024 and eventually reaching 1.9% by 2026.

Story of the Elche Palm Grove The Palmeral of Elche is a unique cultural landscape, of outstanding value and universal significance. It is the heart of an irrigation system established by the founders of the Islamic city of Elche, a millennium ago, and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. With more than 200,000 specimens and about 50,000 in municipal nurseries ready to be planted, the Elche palm grove is the largest in Europe. Although viewed from a distance it may look like a forest, it is actually a plantation carried out for agricultural purposes, which is why the plots or their groupings are called orchards. Each of the plots is flanked by alignments of palm trees, so that, seen from the air, they form grids. The terraces created inside have traditionally been dedicated to agricultural crops. Currently, the palm grove has a more
landscape and cultural function than agriculture, focusing on the production of the white palm for Palm Sunday, and on small harvests of dates for the local market.

Vega Baja Artichoke Association reports a wave of thefts To the inconveniences suffered by artichoke cultivation in the Vega Baja del Segura such as drought, the effects of climate change and the decline in production, we must add one more problem to this list of grievances: the thefts of artichokes that have been reported. produced in the region in recent weeks. In this sense, it is estimated that the damage caused exceeds 30,000 euros between the theft of the light transformer, the thousand kilos stolen, the depreciation that the artichoke has suffered due to its lack of water and the damage caused to the plants. Specifically, in several farms located in Orihuela, San Miguel de Salinas and Redován, nearly a thousand kilos of artichokes have been stolen. In addition, a light transformer was also stolen, which meant that for several days about 30 hectares of artichokes could not be irrigated, with the loss of quality that this entails, and damage has also been recorded to another 7,000 kilos of artichokes due to the destruction. carried out in the plants by the thieves at the time of carrying out the robbery. The Association has reported the situation to the ROCA group of the Civil Guard The president of the Vega Baja del Segura Artichoke , Antonio Ángel Hurtado, has asked for
protection for the field and for the companies and producers behind this crop, explaining that “we are suffering quite a bit this season with the difficulties that we have encountered. the lack of water, the high temperatures and the decrease in production so that now we have to endure these thefts that ruin all the effort and work done on the land throughout the season.” For Hurtado, the fact that the Vega Baja artichoke is highly appreciated and that this season production has decreased by 25%, has caused sales prices at origin to be good during the first weeks of the season, which represents a attraction for lovers of foreign things. La Vega Baja is the second
most important artichoke producing area in Spain, they are the main exporters of artichokes nationwide and this year they expect to collect about 20,000 tons, about 6,000 less than the previous year, due to the decrease in production due to the uncertainty around water and the high temperatures that have been recorded since this summer and that have affected the crop. The Vega Baja del Segura Artichoke Association has contacted the ROCA group of the Civil Guard to report this situation and will also inform the Government Subdelegation in order to make known the facts and demand greater security for the garden.

walk-in jabs available for Covid and u GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The UK has tentatively continued to show signs of decelerating inflation in 2024. Research company Kantar published data on Wednesday 3rd January that showed grocery price inflation falling at the fastest pace on record in December, with annual inflation falling from 9.1% in November down to 6.7% in the run-up to Christmas. Figures released by the British Retail Consortium earlier in the week showed food price inflation also fall to 6.7% from 7.7% the previous month. While these declines can, in large, be attributed to Christmas promotions, with nearly a third of spending in the run-up to Christmas made on offer purchases, it represented the high proportion of promotional spending since December 2020 and also the busiest Christmas for supermarkets since 2019. This Friday (12th January) UK GDP figures will be released and the market is expecting
0.2% growth from October to November 2023. If expectations are realised, this growth could continue to underpin the Pound and UK economy’s resilience, so any change to that narrative could be damaging.

EUR So far in January, we’ve seen EU inflation data indicate that it rebounded in December. Germany’s preliminary CPI data for the last month of the year came in at 3.7% year-onyear (YoY), 0.5% higher than the same metric in November. It was a similar story in France, where YoY inflation rose from 3.5% in November to 3.7% in December. Across the entire Eurozone, there was an inflationary uptick after six months of decline, rising from 2.4% in November to 2.9% in December. However, this figure was slightly below the economists’ forecast from a Reuters poll by 0.1%.
The Primary Care centers of the Valencian Community will administer flu and COVID-19 vaccines without an appointment starting as of yesterday, with the aim of facilitating the immunization of the population in the face of the current rebound in respiratory viruses, as noted this Thursday the Minister of Health , Marciano Gómez, at a press conference after the plenary session of the Consell. In addition, the councilor highlighted that all children will be able to be vaccinated starting yesterday in Primary Care centers with pediatric services. The head of Health explained that, so far, Health has administered 1,035,089 doses of vaccine against the flu, 769,425 doses against the COVID-19 virus and 25,459 against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Likewise, he also recalled that the Ministry of Health has adopted a series of special assistance measures in response to the rebound in respiratory infections typical of this winter period. Among these agreed measures is the adjustment of the programming of surgical activity in order to generate
spaces to meet the demand, and depending on the context of each hospital center, for greater efficiency of existing resources, as well as the reinforcement of templates. Other measures are to promote, in these periods, home care services and establish the highest level of collaboration with the Department of Social Services, Equality and Housing, promoting home hospitalization in nursing homes in cases in which this resource is the ideal one; as well as the reallocation and prioritization of social
resources. Finally, in the event that the collaboration of private resources is needed and, in order to reduce as much as possible any care tension that could be registered, a publicprivate collaboration framework will also be sought. In addition, the Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, announced that he will meet next week with the managers of the health departments of the Valencian Community to analyze the implementation of these measures.

Rojales Town Hall improves Torrevieja Hospital’s street lighting in 53 streets opthalmology service receives Councillor Jesús Martínez points out that little by little work is being carried out on the more than 7,000 street lights in the municipality. The Rojales Town Hall is currently carrying out work to replace the public lighting in a total of 53 streets located in different urbanisations in the municipality, according to the councillor for Works and Services, Jesús Martínez. The improvement of the lighting network consists of both the replacement of luminaires and support columns. Of the former, 458 light heads will be replaced, while the second improvement will affect a total of 276 columns. “This is a new action to improve the services provided by the Town Hall to citizens, in this case in something as important as street lighting,” explains the councillor. According to Jesús Martínez we are gradually improving our urban areas in all types of infrastructure and in this case we are improving the lighting in places such as the Costa Azul avenue, the golf course area and the Windmill, among others. This action is also important to contribute to the environment, because these lights have a longer life and are made with
excellence recognition
less polluting products. The mayor wanted to point out that in the municipality of Rojales there are more than 7,000 public street lights that “with the passage of time are becoming obsolete and need to be renewed”. The improvements being carried out have been tendered for a total of 154,000 euros paid for by the Town Hall and the Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness (IVACE).
50% SAVINGS The project consists of replacing the VSAP lamps with LED technology luminaires, which will enable an economic and energy saving of more than 50% compared to the current lighting systems, says Jesús Martínez. As for the columns, the current 3.5 metre high ones will be replaced by 5 metre high ones and the current plastic material will also be replaced by galvanised structures.
The Ophthalmology Service of the University Hospital of Torrevieja has received a new recognition for excellence in care which, on this occasion, has been certified by the Right Care Foundation. The Certification for Excellence in Ophthalmology refers to different aspects of the healthcare field such as the quality of care, innovation and research carried out in the centre from the perspective of good practice. To this end, it has a scientific committee made up of leading European ophthalmologists who are
experts in the different aspects covered by the certification. This committee collaborates with the team of experts from the Right Care Foundation in the validation of the indicators that are subsequently used for the objective evaluation of the different centres, as well as the methodology and the weighting of the categories according to their importance. Specifically, different categories related to the most important aspects for achieving excellence in ophthalmology units are analysed, such as patient care, training and
support for professionals, healthcare coordination, as well as resources and processes, the promotion of innovation and research and development. If the minimum required standards are met, this certification is awarded and is valid for three years from the date it is obtained. The head of the Ophthalmology Service of the University Hospital of Torrevieja, Dr. José Isidro Belda, has valued this “recognition in a highly positive way, thanks to the efforts of all the professionals who form part of the team”.

Benejúzar Christmas School welcomes more than 150 young people during the school holidays The Benejúzar City Council, through its Department of Social Welfare, has developed the Christmas School 2023 Co-responsibility program in the municipality these days. In this way, the young people of the municipality have been able to enjoy nature care and planting workshops of a tree, art and music, games, sports and excursions to different parts of the town such as the La Pilarica Sanctuary, the gypsum quarry, or the mountain range viewpoint. An initiative that, as indicated by the Councilor for Social Welfare, Paula García, “is an initiative designed to facilitate the conciliation of Benejuense homes during the school holiday period around Christmas, which may have some difficulties to combine caring for their sons and daughters with their work responsibilities.” García has stated that the activity, aimed at young people between 4 and 16 years old registered in the municipality, has generated high acceptance, having had the participation of
more than 150 users. Likewise, the councilor has pointed out that the service, which ended this Thursday and has been carried out in the municipal facilities and the leisure area of La Pilarica since last December 29, has been “completely free for the families of Benejúzar, offering a variety of educational and entertaining activities focused on each age group.” For his part, the mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases, has indicated that “we are very satisfied with the success of this initiative whose main objective is to facilitate the family life of our neighbors, something to which we owe ourselves as a City Council not only during the Christmas months, but
throughout the year.” The first mayor has highlighted that the Benejúzar City Council is a pioneer in this type of policies in the Vega Baja, by also having the ‘Morning Classroom’ service at the CEIP Antonio Sequeros during the school year to support family conciliation, and in which care is offered to students from 3 to 12 years old from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. free of charge. The service has been launched thanks to the funds received from the Ministry of Equality and the Secretary of State for Equality and Against Gender Violence, within the framework of the Co-Responsibility Plan and in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana.

Mystery surrounds disappearance of 30 million euros in aid for Spanish wine The Spanish wine sector is grappling with the disappearance of 30 million euros designated for the promotion of wine in third countries. The funds, part of the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGF), were slated for distribution among beneficiaries in 2020 but never materialized, leaving the industry in a state of disbelief. The Association of Wine Exporters and Producers (FEPEX) has raised the alarm and is demanding answers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). FEPEX asserts that the ministry has failed to provide any satisfactory explanation regarding the whereabouts of the funds, leaving the affected parties in limbo without a solution to the predicament. FEPEX deems this situation “unprecedented” and “unacceptable,” highlighting the potential threat it poses to the competitiveness and viability of the wine sector. The revelation comes at a critical juncture, given the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing trade tensions with the United States. The association warns that the fallout from this incident
could tarnish the image and reputation of Spanish wine in the global market, further eroding trust and credibility in public administration. FEPEX has urgently called on the ministry to clarify the situation and expedite the payment of aid to beneficiaries. Simultaneously, the association has appealed to the European Commission to intervene, overseeing the proper management of the funds to prevent any further irregularities. Expatriates in Spain are expressing little surprise at this revelation, with many having believed that the UK’s economic separation from the EU would lead to increased autonomy in regulatory, budgetary, and trade matters. The Spanish wine industry, renowned for its historical significance dating back to the Phoenicians and Romans, now finds itself embroiled in a financial mystery that has left the sector and its stakeholders in a state of uncertainty. Spain stands as the thirdlargest wine producer and second-largest wine exporter globally by volume, trailing only behind France and Italy. The wine sector holds a pivotal role in the Spanish economy, contributing
over 7 billion euros in turnover and providing employment for more than 400,000 individuals. Additionally, it plays a crucial part in the country’s social and cultural identity, preserving rural landscapes and biodiversity. However, the Spanish wine industry faces formidable challenges, including global competition, evolving consumer habits, climate change, and health and safety regulations. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, particularly with the closure of the hospitality and tourism sectors, which collectively account for over half of domestic wine consumption. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), wine sales in Spain experienced a significant decline of 17.5% in volume and 13.8% in value in 2020 compared to the previous year. Exports also witnessed a downturn of 9.9% in volume and 4.3% in value, outperforming the EU average despite the prevailing adversities. The sector now awaits swift action from authorities to resolve the mystery surrounding the missing funds and safeguard the future of Spanish wine on the international stage.
Torrevieja demands Ro ales installs fifth PSOE access to information in court recycling container
The municipality of Rojales celebrates its weekly market today, Thursday, an event attended by hundreds of neighbors to make their purchases. This is why the council has taken the opportunity to distribute composting bins, biodegradable bags, access keys to the fifth container and information on the campaign for recycling the organic fraction. The Councilor for Urban Solid Waste, Pedro Llopis , explains to us that they are going to send up to 3,000 brown cube-
shaped containers to reduce waste, recycle, take care of the environment and thus promote the fifth container in the municipality and encourage the residents of Rojales to this type of recycling at the origin of the organic fraction. What can be recycled in the brown container? Food scraps such as eggshells and nuts, fruit and vegetable skins and scraps, fish and shellfish bones and scraps, meat bones and scraps, kitchen paper, tissues, napkins,
coffee scraps and even cork stoppers. On the other hand, cigarette butts and ashes, masks and medical supplies, coffee capsules, pads and tampons, diapers or wipes cannot be thrown into this container. The municipal area will have a total of 87 containers initially to begin the campaign and raise awareness among those neighbors who want to collaborate. A campaign that will impact the well-being and sustainability of the municipality.
The Socialist Party of Torrevieja is forced to go to court to request that the violation of fundamental rights caused by the denial of access to information that they have suffered since the beginning of the mandate cease. Bárbara Soler, spokesperson for the municipal group, assures that in addition to requesting the protection of justice, they will request full inspection of all those files delayed beyond
the legal deadline so that the councilors can carry out their work in conditions and have access to information. Likewise, they denounce that they are not invited to part of the cultural or institutional events because “the invitations are not sent to us from the council because the government insists that the invitations arrive in the name of the mayor and there is no mention of transferring it
to the corporation.” . So Soler does not understand that “the government councilors do attend, but the opposition does not, when we are all councillors.” Finally, Soler warns that “from the socialist municipal group we will go to court to supervise all those files to which they are not giving us access and we await a response from the local government as to why this situation occurs.”

Terra Natura Benidorm opens the new year with the first birth of a Spotted Deer
The arrival of the new year has brought with it the birth of Macarena, a baby Spotted Deer (Axis axis), at the Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park. This is the first birth of the year that the park welcomes in its facilities. The calf has remained hidden among the rocks of its meadow for the first few days, although it can now be seen with its mother and the rest of the herd in its enclosure in the Asia area. In this species, the mothers usually
hide the cubs when they are born to avoid possible predators and protect them from them, so that the cubs remain immobile practically all day long. The keepers of Terra Natura Benidorm did not expect births of this species to occur until late January or early February, coinciding with the low temperatures as has happened on other occasions. But it seems that, on this occasion, the birth has been brought forward. The vets carried out an initial visual
check on Macarena to ensure that the baby Spotted Deer is in perfect condition. Then, they proceeded to identify her with an eartag, a distinctive tag that is placed on her left ear when they are females and on the right ear when they are males. They also administered an intravenous vitamin complex to strengthen the animal and dewormed it orally. The Spotted Deer live in herds formed by the adult female and her previous and
present offspring, as it is a gregarious species. The herds are dominated by females. The Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park currently has a group of Spotted Deeras made up of 46 specimens in total. This species, as a curiosity, is capable of emitting sounds reminiscent of dog barking. Males can reach up to 90 centimetres in height and females up to 70 centimetres. Males weigh around 70 kilos and females around 45 kilos.
About Terra Natura Benidorm Terra Natura Benidorm is a nature and animal park dedicated to the care of animal species, with more than 1,500 animals of 200 different species (98 of which are protected or in danger of extinction), 30 conservation projects and 19 breeding programmes. A tour of its facilities immerses visitors in the concept of zoo-immersion and otherness, and allows them to enjoy a wide range of entertainment activities.

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 320 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams. If you have a question or problem with any household technology needing my help or want to join the Technology Help Group please email Brian at cbtechnology.help@gmail.com. As a group member, you would have access to the group website which contains previous session notes, handouts and access to previous Costa Blanca People published articles. Scan the QR for a reminder of what the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group offers. Meetings at Dilly’s Bar, Av. Castuera, 3, 03184 El Chaparral, Alicante. Group meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. Next meeting is on Wednesday 10th January 2024. You are welcome to attend. “I am getting lots of Notifications that I don’t want to see. What can I do?” As you don’t say what device you are using, I will cover all common devices.
From Android device Settings, you can turn off notifications by following these steps. 1. Open Settings, tap Notifications, and then App notifications. 2. Review each App listed and choose to Disable or Enable notifications for each App. How do I stop so many notifications on my iPhone? To stop receiving notifications from an app on your iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications. Then select an app and turn off the slider next to Allow Notifications. You must repeat this process for each app you want to turn off. How do I get rid of unwanted notifications on a Windows computer? Change your Action Centre settings at any time from the Settings app. 1. Select Start, then select Settings. 2. Select System > Notifications & actions. Action Center in Windows 10 is where you’ll find your notifications and quick actions. Change your settings at any time to adjust how and when you see notifications and which apps and settings are your top quick actions. Select Start. Select Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
“I have issues with my computer. Can you help me?” Yes, I can. Send me an email to cbtechnology.help@gmail.com fully describing your issues. I can then offer you advice by email, a home visit or if not feasible it’s possible to help you remotely. For remote access, you will need to download and install Team Viewer Download from https://www. teamviewer.com/en/download/ windows/. When convenient for you we can arrange a date and time for me to connect to your computer. Include a telephone number so that I can speak to you during the process. Open Team Viewer and tell me “Your ID” under “Allow Remote Control”. I will then ask for the password displayed on your computer. I will then be able to see and control your computer. Over the telephone, I can then describe what I am doing and the reason why. The password changes each time Team Viewer is used so I cannot connect to your computer without your knowledge. Following the Team Viewer session I would send a detailed summary on what I did during the Team Viewer session. Brian Hoile, Technology Help Group

Improved roads and access in Cabo Cervera
The Mayor of the city Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Urban Management, Sandra Sanchez, along with the President of the Residents Association, Humberto Zuleta, have visited the works that are already being completed in the urbanization Cabo Cervera, which began last October and have consisted of actions
to improve accessibility, the creation of a safe pedestrian route and the resurfacing of the entire urbanization. These works were included in the Re-surfacing and improvements to pedestrian routes and accessibility project, with an investment of around 460,000€, including overheads, industrial profit and VAT. The works took 2 months to complete.
ACCESSIBILITY 24 actions have been carried out to improve accessibility, consisting of widening sections of pavement in different parts of the urbanisation where the width was only about 50cm. At the same time, all the existing pedestrian crossings have been renovated and new ones have been built, with a total of 51 pavement
reductions. In addition, these actions will allow the creation of new places for reduced mobility. SAFE PEDESTRIAN ITINERARY An action has been carried out to improve the pedestrian itinerary with the installation of a mixed protection barrier (metal-wood) of approximately 300 metres in length that runs along
the Paseo del Acantilado. RESURFACING AND SIGNPOSTING The works have been completed with the milling and subsequent resurfacing of streets with a total surface area of approximately 19,000 square metres. All the horizontal road markings are currently being painted.

Measures implemented to combat drought in the Segura Basin Last week, the Official State Gazette (BOE) published RDL 8/2023, of December 27, by which the Government of Spain introduces measures that will alleviate the effects of the drought, in various hydrographic districts, including the of Segura. The forecasts made by the Technical Drought Office have been predicting for the first quarter of 2024 the possible declaration of extraordinary drought in the Segura basin, which has led to the inclusion of the Segura basin among the basins affected by the drought. In this sense, the aforementioned RDL establishes a series of support measures to alleviate the effects of the drought, in principle with a temporal scope that initially ends on December 31, 2024. Basically, exemptions from the regulation fee and usage rates are contemplated for those users of traditional irrigation who suffer from restrictions greater than 40% of their nominal allocations. Exemptions are also provided for users of the Segura basin who use the ATS infrastructure, during the period in which the extraordinary drought situation persists, once declared, in part of their rates. The Permanent Commission on drought in the Segura hydrographic demarcation is created, determining its
composition, in which representatives of the basin organization, the DGA of the MITERD, as well as representatives of the four autonomous communities with territory in the demarcation, Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia and Castilla La Mancha; There are also representatives of the users of supply, energy uses and irrigation, elected from among those who represent these sectors in the Governing Board. Local administrations, union organizations, business organizations and organizations in defense of environmental interests also participate with voice but without vote. The possibility of use by irrigation users of the volumes available and not used by the MCT, in its desalination plants, at a subsidized rate is also established. In addition, a series of works for immediate execution are contemplated focused on the better exploitation of the unique system of the Segura basin, through actions in the posttransfer infrastructure as well as in the Cenajo dam. The indicative budget is €16,619,486. Finally, a series of administrative measures are contemplated aimed at limiting water supply provisions, execution of new surveys, transfers of water use rights and the sanctioning
regime in case of non-compliance by users. With this package of measures, the Government of Spain, in an exercise of precaution and in anticipation of a declaration of extraordinary drought in the short term, empowers the Segura Hydrographic Confederation , through the Presidency of the organization, to establish measures that allow a greater rationality in the control and protection of the public hydraulic domain in accordance with the provisions of the current Special Drought Plan, which in the latest determinations establishes that the basin is in an ALERT scenario in relation to the global index of conjunctural scarcity, with forecast for declaration of extraordinary drought in the first quarter of 2024. These measures are added to those already established in RDL 4/2023, which adopts urgent measures in agricultural and water matters in response to the drought, for which €10,000,000 were allocated for the exploitation of the Strategic Battery of surveys, already counting on the favorable Environmental Impact Declaration of the constituent surveys of the Calasparra Syncline, which would provide, once the extraordinary drought was declared, a volume of 32 hm3 per year, to which would be added those of the middle and lower Vega, as well
as such as those destined to supply the MCT located in Albacete, which could contribute maximum annual values of 48 hm3 and 13 hm3 respectively. The latter are finalizing their environmental processing, in which the maximum volumes to be extracted will finally be determined. Once again, the Segura basin is in a situation of decreased surface resources due to lower contributions
derived from the lack of rain, which already implies a cut in the allocations of irrigation users, while no effects are expected to normal. supply of supplies dependent on the MCT. For all these reasons, a call is made to irrigation users to effectively comply with the restriction measures adopted by the discharge commission, which imply average restrictions of 25% for irrigation in the Segura basin.

Vox blames foundation subsidy block on administration hitches Orihuela woke up last week with the news that the Miguel Hernández Foundation would not receive the annual subsidy that the entity has used for years to cover the costs of the call and decision of the Miguel Hernández International Poetry Prize. Several media outlets have claimed that the municipal budgets, which must be approved by the council that governs the Popular Party with the support of Vox, do not include the nominative aid of 6,000 euros that,
since 2000, has been granted to the institution and that , in this case, is intended to cover the bulk of the prize. The Spokesperson of the Consell of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ruth Merino , has considered that not making any assessment regarding this issue in addition to clarifying the position of the Consell by “respecting the independence of municipal management as well as the decisions made from the plenary sessions of each town council.
From the VOX Orihuela Municipal Group, its councilor Gonzalo Montoya , has explained that “this subsidy was in the budgets and that it has nothing to do with political decisions but with administrative causes when the technicians perceived the possibility that this subsidy was incompatible due to its object with other perceived other public administrations. This is why “to avoid possible future incompatibilities, it was decided by the Department of Culture to
rigorously study the conditions of the aforementioned subsidy, postponing this year’s 2023 subsidy to 2024,” Montoya clarified. Likewise, the VOX councilor explained that as “proof of the enormous importance that the Department of Culture gives to the figure of Miguel Hernández, in the upcoming 2024 budgets, a single budget item has been created for the Miguel House Museum Hernandez. “It is the first time that the council adopts this decision with our poet.” On behalf of the popular mayor, Pepe Vegara, he assured that “The Miguel Hernández Foundation will have the financial endowment that it has had every year.” Vegara has insisted that for him, the poet “is a fundamental character in the development of the daily, cultural and socioeconomic life
Rojales opens its 2024 cultural program with ‘Rodearte’ The cultural program of Rojales for this newly released 2024 began on Sunday, January 7, with the first art and craft fair “Rodearte” of the twelve that will take place this year, as reported by the Councilor for Culture, Inmaculada Chazarra. Among the events scheduled for the day, we find three workshops offered by artisans from the Rodeo caves. Mask, esparto grass and painting workshops are the lessons organized for Sunday, to which will be added the craft market and the opening
of the workshopscaves of this artisticethnographic enclave located next to the traditional urban area. In addition, the singer-songwriter Carlos Jipi will offer a concert at 11:30 a.m. in the theater’s replacement room and at 12:30 p.m. the group The Gagarins will perform on the main stage of the historic complex of the caves. Rodearte is organized by the Department of Culture of the Rojales City Council and the Cuevas de Rojales Historical Craft Association.
of Orihuela”, a “heritage” that “must be defended.” Hours after the news, the opposition positioned itself against the situation. From the municipal group Cambiemos they demand the immediate dismissal of the Councilor for Culture, explaining that “since the PP-VOX pact was signed in June and the Department of Culture passed into the hands of VOX, we have been able to see how the cultural agenda passes through an exclusively religious theme, the legacy of Miguel Hernández being completely despised. Likewise, they emphasize that “from VOX they argue that there are incompatibilities to receive the subsidy, but it seems strange to us that in the 24 years that this subsidy has been granted there has never been any incompatibility and this year there was.”

The benefits of Hearing Aids
led to smaller, more sophisticated devices that offer improved sound quality and features like Bluetooth connectivity. This ensures that individuals can seamlessly integrate hearing aids into their daily routines without feeling self-conscious.
Hearing aids play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals experiencing hearing loss. These small devices offer a myriad of benefits that extend beyond simply restoring auditory function. Let’s explore the various advantages of using hearing aids.
In conclusion, the benefits of hearing aids extend far beyond the restoration of auditory function. From fostering improved communication and cognitive well-being to enhancing professional efficacy and social participation, these devices have a transformative impact on the lives of individuals with hearing loss. Investing in hearing aids is not just an investment in better hearing; it’s an investment in a more connected, fulfilling, and enriched life.
Firstly, improved communication stands out as a primary benefit. Hearing aids enable individuals to actively participate in conversations, both at home and in social settings. By amplifying sounds and making speech more audible, these devices bridge the gap that hearing loss creates, fostering better connections with loved ones and reducing feelings of isolation. Furthermore, hearing aids contribute to cognitive well-being. Hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline and an increased risk of conditions like dementia. By addressing hearing impairment with aids, individuals can potentially mitigate these risks, as the brain remains actively engaged in processing auditory stimuli. In the workplace, hearing aids are instrumental in maintaining professional efficacy. Clear communication is paramount in most occupations, and hearing aids empower individuals to actively
engage in meetings, discussions, and teamwork. This not only enhances job performance but also promotes a positive work environment. Social participation is another area significantly impacted by the use of hearing aids. Whether attending events, enjoying entertainment, or participating in community activities,
individuals with hearing aids can more fully engage in the world around them. This increased social involvement contributes to a more fulfilling and enriching lifestyle.
and decreased overall well-being. By addressing hearing loss with aids, individuals are better equipped to navigate the emotional challenges associated with this condition.
Moreover, hearing aids help prevent the onset of mental health issues. The emotional toll of untreated hearing loss can lead to anxiety, depression,
Additionally, hearing aids are designed to be discreet and comfortable, aligning with modern lifestyles. Technological advancements have

Twentieth Blood Donation Marathon in Torrevieja I love my father, but over the years I have come to realise he’s a ne’er-do-well. I have discovered so many lies lately, that I am doubting everything he’s ever said to me. My partner has always told me that my father keeps me in tow for when things go pear-shaped. He’s never had any priorities; I know he has no pension and won’t be able to afford to care for himself in his old age. He is also keeping my deluded mother on the hook as his ‘safety net’, even though he is telling anyone who listens how she took him for millions in the divorce; he’s a liar, he never had millions and also lies about his former ‘profession’. Now he says he can’t afford to pay me back the ten thousand pounds I lent him to fight a court case. My partner and I were planning to upgrade our home; my father insisted that he would prevail and get a payout at the end of the day; he did not and now can’t pay me back. My father is now discouraging us from moving to the States for my partner’s work; because he will probably have to retire soon, and because ‘everyone has destroyed him his whole life’; WE should be dutiful and help him.
The Blood Transfusion Center of the Valencian Community , with the collaboration of the Department of Public Health of the Torrevieja City Council, started its 20th edition of the Donation Marathon on Sunday, January 7, in the San Pascual Senior Citizens’ Home. In these XX editions of blood donation marathons, there have been a total of 2,707 donations, of which 605 have been from donors who were carrying out this very solidarity gesture for the first time. Likewise, it is worth
You love your father; that’s clear, but you shouldn’t have to devote your life to him. The role of a parent is to bring up children to be very best of their ability; then encourage them to pursue their independent lives. You are 37 now; unless you want to be in the same situation (or worse) at 47, then do your father’s bidding. If, as you say, your mother is prepared to help your father at the end of the day; then you can jump off the hook, and pursue a new life with your partner overseas.

noting that in this year 2023, a total of 1,040 blood donations have been made in Torrevieja. The Transfusion Center has also scheduled several blood collections in the Vega Baja region for this week. Wednesday the 10th in San Miguel de Salinas, in the hall of the town hall from 5 to 8:30 p.m.; Thursday the 11th in Orihuela, at the Rabaloche health center from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Friday the 12th in Pilar de la Horadada at the leisure center for seniors from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
The province of Alicante needs 250 daily donations to cover the needs of its patients and thus cover oncological treatments, surgical interventions, births, accidents, etc. The requirements to donate blood are: to be between 18 and 65 years old, to be in good health, to weigh more than 50 kilos and not to come on an empty stomach. For any questions or more information, you can consult the website http://centro-transfusion. san.gva.es where all the daily donation points appear.

Road traffic accident statistics released for 2023
The number of deaths remains stable and long-distance trips increase (+2%), the vehicle fleet (+1.7%) and the driver census (+0.4). Exiting the road continues to be the type of accident with the most deaths, with 486 people, 42% of the total number of fatalities. Deaths in frontal collisions are reduced by 9%: 225 in 2023 compared to 246 the previous year. Motorcyclists are the group that increases their mortality the most with 299 deaths, 45 more than in 2022. The number of pedestrians killed by accidents decreases (118 in 2023 compared to 127 in the previous year) and almost half of them died in accidents that involved place on highways and highways (56). The presentation of this annual balance sheet took place at the Madrid headquarters of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), and the Minister of the Interior was accompanied by the department’s undersecretary, Susana Crisóstomo, and by the general director of Traffic, Pere Navarro. . The figures released this Thursday are framed in a context in which longdistance trips, the vehicle fleet (1.7 percent) and the driver census (0.4) have increased by 2 percent. In 2023, 448.7 million road trips were made, with a vehicle fleet that stands at 36.6 million and a driver census that rises to 27.8 million. “You have heard me say on numerous occasions that most traffic accidents are avoidable and that reducing these tragic figures is in our hands if we all redouble our efforts with that objective,” Grande-Marlaska highlighted in the presentation of the balance sheet, where has reiterated a “call for drivers’ responsibility, because avoiding distractions, respecting traffic
rules and using safety systems are three simple elements that can greatly reduce these dramatic figures and the human tragedies behind them.”
FRAMING The evolution of the accident rate over the 365 days of last year has been variable, as shown in the following data: • The number of fatal accidents recorded has increased, but the number of deaths is almost the same, which indicates that the average fatality (number of deaths per accident) has decreased. • There have been 25 days with 0 deaths, four days more than the previous year. • The daily average of road deaths has been 3.1 people. The evolution of the accident rate in the European Union shows a situation of stability, in which the figures for the different countries are between +/-5 percent according to the European Commission. With provisional data for the first half of 2023, Sweden, Ireland and Estonia have increased deaths in 2023, while Germany and Denmark are stable ANALYSIS OF THE ACCIDENTS By type of road: of the 1,145 people who died, 849 (74%) died in accidents that took place on conventional roads, 21 more people than in 2022. On high-capacity roads, deaths have decreased compared to the previous year. Specifically in 2023, 296 people died, 24 less than in 2022. These data confirm that the relationship that 3 out of every 4 deaths occur in accidents that take place on conventional roads remains stable. By type of accident: going off the
road continues to be the type of accident with the most deaths, with 486 people, 42% of the total number of deaths, a figure similar to last year. On the contrary, deaths in frontal collisions decreased by 9%. By type of user: the number of vulnerable users who died increased by 9%, reaching 463 deaths, 38 more than in 2022. This increase, which has been uneven between the different types of vulnerable users, as can be seen in the following table, is mainly due to motorcyclists, whose mortality has increased by 19% compared to 2022. It stands out that almost half of the pedestrian deaths were in accidents that took place on highways and highways (56) compared to the 62 that occurred on conventional roads. Taking into account the evolution since 2012, the only means of travel that has increased the accident rate is that of motorcyclists with an increase of 37% (from 218 to 299). On the other hand, the number of deceased cyclists has remained constant in the last decade, in an environment of greater bicycle use and with the challenge of not increasing the accident rate. Pedestrians, those traveling in cars and trucks have also reduced their mortality since 2012, with a decrease of 11%, 23% and 34% respectively. By characteristics of the victim: the age group that increases its mortality the most is 45 to 54 years old with 228 people dead, 20% of the total and with figures 11% higher than those of 2022. Infant mortality also increases. since the year 2023 registers a total of 22 deaths between 0 and 14 years old, the second highest number in the last 10 years only
behind the year 2014. For its part, the group aged 65 and over accounts for 18% of the deceased (206), with a decrease of 10% (-24) compared to 2022. By sex, men account for 79% of the fatalities (905) compared to women (236) who account for the remaining 21%. These figures are 1% lower than those of 2022 in the case of men, but remain unchanged in the case of women. By timing of the incident: 57% of the deaths (658) were recorded on a weekday compared to 43% (487) on the weekend.
Safety accessories: 138 people traveling in cars and vans did not use seat belts. In the case of the deceased motorcyclists, 8 of them were not wearing helmets and 9 of the deceased cyclists were not using them either. By location of the accident: Andalusia and Catalonia register the highest figures for road accidents, in both cases there is a decrease compared to last year of 12% (-26) and 5% (-8) respectively. On the other hand, La Rioja and the Foral Community of Navarra register the lowest figures with 1% of the total, with 11 and 13 deaths respectively.
DGT approved lights provide location of vehicles in trouble Starting January 1, 2026, only connected V-16 lights will be valid. If you purchase one soon, it is advisable that you meet this requirement. On the Agency’s website you can consult all the models already certified. This sign improves road safety as it avoids having to leave the vehicle to place the triangles in the event of a breakdown and notifies other drivers of its presence thanks to its geopositioning. THE SUBSTITUTE OF TRIANGLES Although the connected V-16 light will not be mandatory until January 1, 2026 (until that time, the danger pre-signaling triangles and non-connected V-16s can continue to be used interchangeably in the event of a breakdown), there are already a large number of models of This new light signal certified by the DGT. For this reason, if you are interested in acquiring a beacon of this type soon, the Agency recommends consulting the website where all the models that have passed the certification process in the designated laboratories appear and, in the event of have to be used, they would send the data to the DGT 3.0 platform. Purchasing a connected V-16 signal now will avoid a double investment, since these will be the only ones valid from January 1, 2026. The connected V-16 integrates inside its casing all the elements necessary for its operation, including those of communications, without having to resort to external elements such as mobile phone applications or other similar ones. Furthermore, with regard to the duration of service, the legislation establishes a minimum availability of
connectivity of 12 years, the cost of which is already contemplated in the sales price of the V-16, so it will not be necessary to pay any type of additional fee. Of course, it is important to observe the expiration date, printed both on the packaging and on the device itself. ROAD AID CRANES, THE FIRST TO EMIT THE SIGNAL The first sector that has begun to use this connected device and send the location of its vehicles when they are performing a roadside assistance service is the tow truck sector. Although the obligation to carry it in vehicles is January 1, 2026, the DGT urges public organizations to acquire said connected device for their vehicle fleets, as well as the inclusion in the clauses in public contracts, the requirement to include the connected V-16 beacon both in the vehicles themselves that are purchased and in the vehicles that the contractor will provide. The Stockholm Declaration of the Third World Ministerial Conference on Road Safety: Achieving the Global Goals by 2030” and the Road Safety Strategy 2030, urge public organizations and the private sector to purchase safe and sustainable vehicles and transport
services, which It materializes in its inclusion in purchases, contracts and concessions and can be extended to the provision of safety elements that can reduce the risk of accidents, such as the V-16 signal. ELIMINATED THE OBLIGATION TO USE TRIANGLES ON HIGHWAY AND HIGHWAY Since last July 1, the General Directorate of Traffic has eliminated the obligation to use emergency triangles to signal an incident on highways and highways. The measure was adopted after the increase in the number of accidents on this type of road, given that the majority of these accidents occur when, after an incident, the occupants of the vehicle leave the passenger compartment to place the emergency triangles and signal the situation to the driver. rest of the road users. In the last five years, an average of 22 fatal accidents per year have been recorded for this reason.

Sheerin’s Golf Society at El Plantio This was the start of our new season in 2024 with a new name and location at Sheerin’s bar in Catral and what a great start it was at El Plantio. Twenty-two players took part in this SGS competition, the format was singles full handicap stableford split into two groups. On arrival at the course, we received the usual friendly greeting from Daniel and his staff, the fairways and greens were in good condition being that we haven’t had much rain in the last 6 months but some of the tee boxes were a bit bare, the weather was chilly to start but once the sun got to work it was a pleasant 75 degrees. Winner of the SGS competition was “I Want my HCP Cut” Ian Birch from group A with a great HCP cutting score of 41 points, runner up was “Lion” John Fairbrass with a score of 38 points and third place went to Steve Martin with 36 points. Winner from group B was “PAW” Derry Quinlan with 39 points,
Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 2nd of January we fished the first match of the year at El Bosquet. The temperature was a lowly 2 degrees upon arrival but did warm up nicely during the day. After a brief discussion with the anglers it was decided by the majority with only one real objection that we fish all the anglers on pegs 26 to 40. This section has been fishing particularly bad in recent weeks but it was thought to be the fairest option. Once again the fishing was tough for the majority of anglers with several dry nets and some very low weights, but in essence that’s fishing. Winner on the day was Graham Patterson. Drawn on peg 28 he fished
a cage feeder with maggots or the pole down the middle and caught carp. mullet and barbel, for a good weight on the day of 8.640kg. In second place was Jackie Breslin. Drawn on the old flyer peg 26 he had not had a bite come midday but a switch to a pop up wafter on the method feeder saw him land three carp in quick concession and he weighed 4.640kg. In third place was Bill Reade. Bill fished the pole for the first three hours on peg 39 but did not have a bite. He switched to the bomb with maggots and also caught three carp one after the other and weighed 3.700kg. The fishing was poor to say the least but we all entered into the spirit
of the match and a good time was had by all. The banter took the usual form and the odd broken pole section only added to the frivolity. Fishing is not always about catching huge amounts of fish , it’s also about having a good day out with your mates. I am not sure that this experiment will be repeated next week but let’s see what happens. Ian Brown
runner up was “Lost and Found” Chris Russell with 34 points and third place went to Paul Owen with 33 points.
