Plans to install the beach bars on the beaches of Orihuela
One
The wood is already stacked on the sand, awaiting preparation in a municipality known not only for its processions but also for its 16 kilometers of coastline, a signi cant tourist attraction and second home destination.
The objective is to timely award the contract for beach bars, which have been closed since January last year after the previous government team of PSOE and Ciudadanos decided against contract extension, prompting some demonstrations.
In June, the PP and Vox coalition resolved to start afresh with this contract and with the maintenance of coastal green areas, addressing concerns frequently voiced by residents and users. The municipal company Ildo is slated to oversee garden maintenance, while beach bar contracts were tendered in November, with the aim of having them operational by Easter, as emphasized by the City Council.
However, contingency plans are in place in case of delays, ensuring minimum services including walkway maintenance, lifeguard provision, and the functionality of toilets, which are highly sought after by beachgoers.
Among the fteen o ers submitted for the four-year contract worth over 2.5 million euros, one proposal
includes water sports activities. The rest are divided into four lots, with La Caleta and Aguamarina proving most appealing to potential contractors, while Cala Bosque, Cala Cerrada, and Cala Capitán make up the other lot. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the process is expected to conclude by month-end. Yet, hypothetical claims could stall the contract, given that some o ers were delayed due to portal inaccessibility.
“Will there be adequate time in three weeks to prepare logistics?” inquire the Cabo Roig and Lomas Neighborhood
Association, urging the City Council in writing to expedite facility inspections, particularly focusing on the toilets, which, though installed, are “old and in very poor condition.”
Speci cations dictate that kiosks, toilets, and pergolas from the previous contract will be transferred to municipal ownership. Successful bidders will be responsible for repairs and maintenance, as outlined in the tender.
Hence, the association has urged the Coastal Department to commence inspections and identify necessary repairs to toilets, facilitating timely repairs before service commencement.
According to the association’s ndings, the toilets from the previous beach bars exhibited numerous de ciencies due to age, such as frequent breakdowns in water connections and drains, particularly evident in Cala Capitán. Additionally, some toilets su ered from oor deterioration due to humidity and water leaks, as did hand dryers, sinks, trash cans, cisterns, and paper towel dispensers.
Regarding beach improvement, La Caleta stands as a prime example of neglect, characterized by poor cleanliness, exposed tubes, and dilapidated footbaths. Hence, advocating for a comprehensive maintenance plan for all eleven beaches, which are in dire need of attention.

At least 10 people dead in Valencia high-rise building fire
According to El Pais, a tragic incident claimed the lives of four individuals from the same family: the parents, a three-yearold girl, and an infant. Following a re at an apartment complex in Valencia on Thursday, the death toll has risen to at least ten, with 14 others sustaining injuries.
Pilar Bernabé, a city o cial, con rmed the grim news via Twitter on Friday, revealing that ten bodies were found during the initial inspection by forensic experts.
Currently, ve individuals, including four re ghters, remain hospitalized in stable condition. Authorities attribute the rapid spread of the ames to high winds and the cladding on the building, although they have not yet addressed inquiries regarding the blaze’s exact cause.
Among the deceased are reportedly a young couple with two children and two elderly individuals.
O cials have stated that no one else is missing, and police have commenced investigations into the destroyed residential towers to ascertain how the re propagated within minutes. While the exact number of occupants during the re remains unknown, it is believed that dozens have been displaced from their homes within the complex, which comprised approximately 140 apartments.
Spain is set to observe three days of mourning in response to the tragedy.
While many re crews have concluded their operations, re ghters and forensic teams continue their search for any
remaining missing persons. Valencia Mayor María José Catalá noted that the risk of the 14-story building collapsing and the intense heat initially hindered rescue e orts.
The re, which ignited on Thursday evening, is under investigation. However, experts suggest that the polyurethane cladding on the building may have intensi ed the blaze. Esther Puchades, vice-president of the Valencia College of Industrial and Technical Engineers, likened the material to plastic when heated, explaining its combustibility. She referenced previous incidents in the United Kingdom and China involving similar materials, such as the Grenfell Tower re in London in June 2017, which
claimed over 70 lives.
Although the building in Valencia was completed in 2009, questions are raised about the materials used in its construction. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the site, pledging support for the a ected individuals and expressing gratitude to the emergency responders. The Valencia regional government has declared three days of mourning and announced nancial assistance for accommodation, clothing, and food for the a ected residents, who have been temporarily relocated to hotels or the residences of family and friends.

Record profits announced by Iberdrola
Iberdrola has once again outperformed its own expectations, achieving recordbreaking pro ts exceeding €4.8 billion in 2023, marking a signi cant milestone for the company and surpassing the previous year’s results by 10.7%.
Furthermore, the company’s annual gross investment nearly reached €11.4 billion, indicating a notable 6% increase. Despite the normalization of electricity prices following a historic surge, Spain’s foremost electricity provider has maintained its robust performance.
In its latest earnings presentation, Iberdrola criticized the tax policies of Pedro Sánchez’s government, with Ignacio Galán, the company’s chairman, decrying Spain’s high tax pressure. The company reported a substantial 99% increase in tax payments in Spain between 2022 and 2023, totaling €1.703 billion by the end of 2023, which constitutes 86% of the group’s total increase in taxes.
Galán highlighted that even excluding two temporary taxes – the cap on gas and the levy on sector income – taxes in Spain still represent over 90% of the net operating expenses in the country. He emphasized that such a tax burden makes
Spain’s investment conditions unattractive.
The group’s gross operating pro t (EBITDA) saw a commendable 9% growth, reaching €14.417 billion in 2023.
The company clari ed that the 11% increase in net pro t includes two non-recurring items in the fourth quarter totaling €141 million, attributed to the e ects of e ciency plans (€90 million) and a provision anticipated to be recovered in 2024 (€51 million).
Leveraging its strong performance, the company plans to signi cantly boost dividends. The Board of Directors will
propose to the Shareholders’ Meeting a 10.8% increase in investor remuneration, facilitated by a supplementary dividend of €0.348 gross per share, enabling a distribution of €0.55 per share from the 2023 accounts.
Looking ahead, the group’s prospects for the coming year are highly optimistic. Iberdrola aims to invest €12 billion in the scal year, and it has already secured contracts for 90% of its energy for 2024 through bilateral agreements. Iberdrola, headquartered in Spain, is a multinational utility company and ranks among the world’s largest energy corporations.
San Miguel suspends the granting of licenses to stop the solar plant of the Torrevieja desalination plant
The San Miguel de Salinas City Council has initiated its plan to paralyze the project to install a solar park for the Torrevieja desalination plant on the agricultural land of its municipal area. In the extraordinary plenary session held this morning, the political groups have agreed to suspend the processing and granting of licenses for land parceling, construction and demolition on non-developable land related to renewable energies. This precautionary suspension of the processing and granting of land parceling,
building and demolition licenses will have a maximum duration of two years in which the council must undertake a reform of the urban planning that determines which areas of non-developable land deserve special protection. for its environmental, cultural, agrological and landscape value.
This measure is part of a package proposed by the San Miguel council that also includes the creation of a joint commission to study the case and decide the next steps in search of the general interest of the municipality.
Likewise, the leaders of the municipal political groups will meet at the beginning of next week with the subdelegate of the Government in Alicante, Juan Antonio Nieves, and with directors of the state company dependent on the Government Acuamed, responsible for the initiative. The objective of the meeting is to gather as much information as possible about the preliminary project presented by the company and negotiate solutions that involve the preservation of the agricultural sector and the landscape value of the town.

GBP
Last week was a tough data week for the UK economy. The average earnings, excluding bonuses, were up 5.8% year-on-year for the previous three months of 2023, UK in ation held at 4%, which is still double the target rate, and GDP for Q4 showed that the UK was in a technical recession in the second half of 2023. However, as in ation is behaving as expected and the Bank of England’s interest rate forecasts are staying steady, the pound has remained relatively at.
The week ahead promises further fallout from the two recent UK by-election results, with the Conservatives losing by a signi cant swing against them, which does not bode well for the UK general election due at some point in the latter part of this year.
In terms of data releases for the UK this week, on Monday, we saw Rightmove’s House Prices Index released, with house prices continuing to increase for a second month this year; this follows two months of decline at the end of 2023. According to February’s data, house prices increased by 0.9%, which was below January’s growth of 1.3% but could indicate a return to health for the housing market. Agreed sales were also 16% higher than the same month last year, and new listings and buyers’ enquiries increased by 7%.
The rebound comes as mortgage lenders have already begun to cut rates in anticipation of the Bank of England heading towards a base rate cut towards the middle of the year. Two-year xed rate mortgages have already seen a 0.37% drop since the start of 2024.
On Thursday the latest data from the UK’s Manufacturing and Services Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) was released. This is an important indicator for investors who will be looking for signs as to whether the situation is improving in the UK following a long period of stagnant growth.
The Manufacturing PMI was forecast at 47.5 but came in slightly below expectation at 47.1, but still increased from last month’s reading of 47.0, and the Service PMI is expected at 54.3. Most importantly, the maintained strength of the services data could indicate the private services industry, which includes
nance, insurance, communications and non-retail consumer companies, has an optimistic outlook for the year after it posted the strongest reading for six months in January.
EUR
It’s been a quiet few weeks for the euro with no key data releases recently; as such, any movement has been more dependent on the other side of the currency pair.
This week, we saw the latest Euro Area Consumer Con dence, a leading indicator of consumer spending, released on Wednesday. Consumer Con dence in Europe hasn’t been above the critical 0 threshold that indicates optimism since May 2018. As expected, it remained at at -16 from last month when it came in below forecast.
We also saw Manufacturing and Services PMI data from France, Germany and the EU as a whole on Thursday. The data was expected to continue to creep upwards, with both France and Germany forecasting slight gains in last month’s readings in both industries. France’s PMI data came in above expected, posting 46.8 for Manufacturing and 48.0 for Services, ahead of the forecast readings of 43.5 and 45.7, respectively.
Germany’s data was more mixed, coming in below expectations for Manufacturing at 42.3 and slightly above for Service at 48.2.
As they are two of the biggest EU economies, their results were re ected in the overall Manufacturing and Services PMI data, which landed at 46.1 and 50.0. This was the rst time the Eurozone Services data wasn’t below the key 50 threshold that separates growth and contraction since July last year. The majority of readings, however, remain below 50, indicating continued industry contraction.
The latest in ation data for January was also released for the euro area yesterday, showing that it had fallen to 2.8%. This puts in ation back on its downward trajectory after a slight increase in December. This week’s data could continue to negatively impact the euro as markets become more con dent that the ECB will be the rst to begin its rate-cutting cycle, which could happen as early as April.
Spains population at its highest
The population of Spain has reached its highest point in history, surpassing the 48 million mark for the rst time. If current trends persist, the country could easily exceed 50 million residents before the decade concludes, with an average annual in ux of between half a million and three-quarters of a million new inhabitants, primarily through immigration rather than childbirth.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), as of January 1 of this year, Spain’s population stood at 48,592,909, marking an increase of 507,548 since January 1, 2023. These o cial gures do not include foreign-born residents without permits or those who have not been recorded in their local town hall’s population census, known as the padrón, suggesting that the total population may already exceed 50 million.
The majority of the annual population growth stems from non-Spanish-born individuals relocating to the country, with foreigners currently constituting approximately 13% of the population, totaling around 6.5 million. Population increases have been observed across all regions of Spain, with particularly notable expansions in areas such as the city-province of Melilla on the northern African coast, Greater Madrid region, and the Comunidad
Valenciana along the east coast.
Accompanying the population rise is a signi cant increase in the number of households in Spain, attributed in part to the growing resident gures as well as factors such as separations and young adults leaving their parental homes. As of the last quarter of 2023, Spain boasts 48.6 million residents living in 19,346,386 households, indicating an increase of 45,560 households over the preceding three months. While it may appear that population growth is accelerating, particularly in comparison to the years of the nancial crisis when Spain’s population dwindled to nearly 45 million, the reality is that growth rates have moderated. The nal quarter of 2023 witnessed a population increase approximately half of the average seen throughout the decade, with growth rates ranging from 1.09% to 1.31% in
each quarter since 2020.
The rise in population post-Covid crisis, according to experts, signi es an encouraging sign for Spain’s ongoing prosperity, reminiscent of the immigration levels witnessed in the years preceding the 2008 nancial crisis. The recent surge in population has led to a heightened demand for public resources, prompting the need for strategic planning to accommodate the evolving demographic landscape.
Regarding the composition of Spain’s population, foreign nationals continue to play a signi cant role, with immigrants from Colombia, Venezuela, and Morocco leading the in ux in the nal quarter of 2023. Despite outward migration trends, particularly among Spanish nationals, net migration remains positive, re ecting a buoyant domestic economy albeit with certain challenges in the job market, according to experts.

Improvements demanded in Orihuela playgrounds
Many playgrounds in Orihuela present a distressing sight: broken benches, raised rubber, sandy holes, inadequate lighting, rusty facilities, and open irrigation manholes, all posing potential risks to children and families who frequent these areas. Eva Vargas, a resident of Hurchillo who regularly accompanies her children to Fernando de Loaces school in Palmeral, attests to the daily peril faced by children in these neglected playgrounds. According to her, there are scarcely any safe havens within the municipality.
In response to the alarming conditions, Vargas took action in November by founding the Facebook group “United for the Neglect of Orihuela’s Parks,” garnering 460 followers who share images not only of dilapidated playgrounds but also of deteriorating green spaces and sports facilities across the city, including its districts and coastal areas.
The group’s e orts have culminated in 908 signatures submitted to the City Council, part of an ongoing campaign initiated after Christmas, persisting due to the lack of response or resolution from authorities despite numerous appeals. Their demand is clear:
urgent remediation of the de ciencies plaguing these public spaces.
Frustration peaked in December when over 300 individuals, including Vargas, staged a protest, frustrated by the City Council’s prolonged inaction despite repeated pleas for repairs.
Should their demands continue to be ignored, Vargas warns of further demonstrations, condemning the super cial xes applied to a handful of parks as mere attempts to quell dissent, rather than addressing the systemic issue at hand. This makeshift approach, she emphasizes, is no substitute for the comprehensive solutions urgently needed, especially
with budgets stagnant since 2018.
Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Councilor for Infrastructure, Víctor Valverde, admits that “at least 30” of the municipality’s 150 playgrounds su er from serious de ciencies, attributing the neglect to long-standing maintenance lapses exacerbated by budget constraints.
While Valverde reassures that repairs are underway in ve parks, including those in La Matanza, Hurchillo, Correntías, San Bartolomé, and a residential area bordering Bigastro, parents remain skeptical, fearing that these e orts fall short of ensuring children’s safety amidst lingering hazards.

Dani Alves sentenced to four and a half years in jail over sexual assault
Former Barcelona and Brazil footballer Dani Alves has been handed a four-year and sixmonth prison sentence for sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in a Barcelona nightclub back in December 2022.
A statement from the Audiencia Nacional in Barcelona stated that the victim did not give consent to engage in sexual activity with Alves. The court, after reviewing evidence alongside the victim’s testimony, concluded that she had indeed been raped. Alves has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and his lawyer, Inés Guardiola, has stated their intention to le an appeal.
Originally, the prosecution had sought a nine-year sentence, while the victim’s legal representatives requested twelve. Alves’s eventual sentence slightly exceeds the minimum of four years. Due to time served in pre-trial detention, he may soon be eligible for release on probation.
In addition to his prison sentence, the 40-year-old has been ordered to compensate the victim with €9,000 for physical damages. He has also o ered to pay €150,000 in compensation, a gesture acknowledged by the court as a mitigating factor during sentencing. Alves will remain under legal supervision for ve more years, with a restraining order preventing contact with
the victim for nine years and six months.
This verdict re ects a departure from past tendencies to scrutinize the victim’s behavior, shifting towards a legal framework that prioritizes evidence of consent or lack thereof. A legislative change in 2022 emphasizes that proof of sexual assault does not require physical injuries or heroic resistance from the victim.
Spain’s vice-president, Yolanda Díaz, expressed hope that this sentence would serve as a deterrent, stating, “Enough of machismo and sexual
aggression that women endure across all spheres of life.”
The incident occurred when Alves encountered the woman in the VIP section of the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona on December 30, 2022. After buying drinks for her and her friends, he invited her to a bathroom, an area not monitored by cameras. Inside, the victim alleges that he demanded oral sex, and when she refused, he sexually assaulted her. Initially, Alves denied meeting the woman, but his story changed multiple times when confronted with forensic and video evidence.

Almoradí has a new contract for the collection of urban solid waste and street cleaning in the municipal area, approved in the Plenary Session of the City Council by a majority with the votes in favor of the PP, PSOE and Vox and against IU.
The new contract will have a duration of 10 years, with a cost of 19 million euros and will mean an improvement in services adapted to the needs of the municipality.
The Councilor for Urban Cleaning, Domingo Andreu, indicated in the session that “until now we had a contract for waste collection and another for street cleaning, in this contract everything will be merged into a single company, almost having a service.” 24 hours to be able to cover any incident.”
Starting today, it goes out to tender so that all companies that want to present their project can do so during the next 30 days. Once the award has been made and its approval in full, there will be a transition year until the e ective provision of the new service, including all the material re ected in the speci cations and in the o er of the winning company.
The preparation of these speci cations has involved exhaustive work over the last two years, in which external engineers, engineers and o cials from the city council itself and the citizens themselves
have participated with their complaints, suggestions, surveys and with the day-to-day running of the current service; resulting in complete speci cations for the improvement of services.
With this new contract, an attempt is made to improve the entire negative image that the service has due to lack of resources and personnel, starting with the replacement of all street containers with new ones in accordance with the new side loading system chosen, increasing the frequency of the collection of containers and belongings, and expanding the washing of containers to all of them. The capacity of the containers that the companies in the industrial estates have in use will also be increased and a door-to-door collection system for commercial cardboard will be started to avoid the saturation of recycling containers on public roads, etc.... and will be established at the beginning of
the contract the brown container for large producers such as restaurants, cafeterias, etc.... and during the following three years for the rest of the municipality.
Regarding street cleaning, the workforce will be doubled with morning, afternoon, holiday and weekend shifts. Also included will be brush clearing services, street washing, sidewalks and industrial estates.
Spaces that until now were not in the contract have been included, such as squares, parks, roundabouts, municipal lots, uncontrolled discharges and polygons, also increasing the frequency of cleaning the districts.
Another aspect included in the contract is the renewal of all vehicles and machinery that will be quieter and that while the contract lasts, it will be the responsibility and obligation of the successful bidder to keep them clean and in optimal operating conditions.
Snow on the Costa Blanca?...
This is actually the spectacular Salt Water Trail of Albatera located in the Vega Baja Region. Known to locals as the Ruta Rambla Salada, this trek consists of impressive geological rock formations, natural salt springs, clear water pools, and a series of old aqueducts. The salt that you see along the way arises from contact between the permeable materials like limestone and sandstone, with the impermeable materials like clays and gypsum. The ltration of rainwater between the rocks pushes water with very high salt levels outwards, forming this beautiful landscape. In addition to the huge amount of salt accumulated in the bed of the boulevard, as well as the brown
coloration due to the oxidation of the minerals, some large rocks that can be found on the route really stand out, such as the Barrón Negro or the large green ophite rocks. This route is of medium to high di culty with a duration of up to four hours, and includes some steep rocky pathways. A more detailed explanation with the starting point can be found from the following Wikilok link https://www.wikiloc.com/.../ramblasalada-albatera-12413194

Volunteers clean 100,000 square metres of rubbish from the Segura riverbed in Rojales
Almost 100,000 square metres of land were cleared of plastic containers and other rubbish last Sunday in an environmental activity organised by the Rojales Council Environment Department, Huergur and Mocho Costero. The environmental awareness and improvement activity was attended by around 80 people of all ages as well as members of the government team.
The removal of waste took place in the Segura riverbed, roads and adjoining groves along more than 3,500 linear metres, from the fairgrounds to the Segura river bridge at the height of the Cabezo de las
Tinajas. Supermarket trolleys, bicycles, clothes and above all plastic containers were the waste collected.
The councillor for the Environment, Tatiana de Gea, expressed her satisfaction at the large number of participants, the amount of waste removed from the Segura riverbed and the fact that it was also an awarenessraising initiative, “fundamental for us all to be aware of the great problems and negative e ects generated by plastics, especially in the natural environment”.
The municipal o cial announced that this type of
environmental improvement activity will continue in other parts of the municipality. “We are already receiving proposals from our fellow citizens to repeat this initiative in other parts of the town. We will take this into account and we will continue with this type of action, trying to involve our neighbours even more,” the councillor added.
Before starting the rubbish collection, the volunteers received materials for the activity such as gloves, rucksacks, caps, tweezers and water. Once the event was over, a small lunch with sandwiches and fruit was organised.

Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja to hold a “Family Concert”
The Councillor for Education of the City of Torrevieja, Ricardo Recuero, along with the president of Ars Aetheria, Mamen Mateo and the director of the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja, José Francisco Sánchez, presented this morning the “Family Concert” to be held on Sunday, March 10, at 12:00 pm in the International Auditorium of Torrevieja. Tickets are free with invitation until full capacity of the Auditorium, and can be purchased through culturatorrevieja. com and entradasatualcance.com

Sailors adorn loved ones on Valentines
The Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) shipmates (S/M’s) and some guests continued sailing into this year’s social calendar at their third event by ‘treating their loved ones’ to a Valentines Dinner at Little Italy Restaurant near Cabo Roja, and needless to say it was on the 14th February 2024.
The venue was romantically decked out with loved ones in mind by the RNATB Assistant Social Secretary, Lenny Manning and his Bosun’s (Boatswain) Mate, Angie Manning.
Each of the ‘loved ones’ was lavished with gifts including a personally addressed & individually hand crafted Valentine’s card from a secret admirer, a bottle of ‘Fizz’, a big red rose and a ‘favour’ of, a handmade chocolate heart with a cupids arrow through it and last but not least, a beautiful heart shaped brooch, all of which was prepared and presented by S/M Angi Manning on behalf of the ‘secret admirers’.
There was much passion in the air for the ‘loved ones’, including ‘secret admirers’ trying to tempt their ‘loved ones’ with a rose between their
teeth, however unfortunately on one got up to do the ‘Paso Doble’ or dance the ‘Sailors Hornpipe’, nevertheless there was much chatter and couples looking ‘starry eyed at each other’… or was that the owing vino and grog?
Little Italy’s chef and waiters did themselves proud, with the food and service be tting the adoration of our ‘loved ones’ and all the ‘secret admirers’ keenly anticipate being festooned with many ’brownie points’.
The, (what is keenly seen as the almost compulsory) Ra e with oodles of prizes was excitedly anticipated by S/M’s, who were not disappointed.
The amassing of prizes and drawing of the ra e was
enthusiastically undertaken by the RNATB Ra e Co-ordinator, Nicola Louden and amazingly aided by the RNATB Assistant Ra e Co-ordinator, Kim Heming eld and added that extra layer of excitement for the evening.
As the exhilaration of the evening was drawing to a close with everyone in high spirits, all the ‘loved ones and secret admires’ (who were no longer secret by this time) ‘let go forward & let go aft’ and sailed o on their way to their ‘home port’, with the excitement of looking forward to the next event and giving a massive BZ (Bravo Zulu - NATO signal for ‘Well Done’) to all those who aided in staging the event.
National Programme for the Prevention of Drug Addiction launched
The NGO Controla Club, in collaboration with the City Council of Torrevieja and the Association of Hospitality Businesses of Torrevieja and Region, launches the National Programme for the Prevention of Drug Addiction in the Hospitality Sector “Responsible Service”, through which we want to encourage the collaboration of the hospitality and nightlife sector in promoting a healthy and responsible leisure in Torrevieja.
The councillor of Commerce and Hospitality of the City Council of Torrevieja, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, reports that the objective of the program “Responsible Service” aims to implement a network of establishments in Torrevieja, whose premises meet a series of requirements to ensure a responsible service and quality care to their customers.
All these requirements are included in the “Code of Good Professional Practices in the Hospitality Sector”, which brings together advice and recommendations on the responsible dispensing of alcohol, the control of tra cking and consumption of illegal drugs, the protection of minors, the security and control of the facilities of public establishments, the capacity of the premises to react to
emergency situations and, in general, the adequate provision of service and customer care.
For all these reasons, a registration period has been opened until 15 March, so that any hotel or nightlife business in the city can obtain the distinctive program and join the Network of Responsible Establishments of Torrevieja. To do so, please contact www. controlaclub.org or www. servicioresponsable.org.
In short, these actions demonstrate the value of collaboration and coresponsibility of the hotel and catering and leisure sector in the prevention of drug addiction and the promotion of healthy and responsible leisure.
The association Controla Club is a non-pro t NGO, constituted in 1997, which was created with the aim of addressing social responsibility in youth leisure, informing and raising awareness of the risks and problems related to leisure and free time for young people, showing the advantages of moderate behaviour and intelligent leisure alternatives, by creating communication and social mediation strategies based on the point of view of the potential consumer, in such a way that they are able to use their proximity to the consumer to strengthen their commitment and generate the necessary credibility of the programme’s messages.

Nine out of ten patients with the most common tumours can be cured with an early diagnosis
Specialists at Quirónsalud point out that nine out of ten patients with the most common tumours can be cured if detected in their early stages, such as breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common tumour among the female population, accounting for almost 30% of all cancers diagnosed in women and also the most diagnosed tumour worldwide. For this reason, Dr. Marta Huertas, radiologist at the Diagnostic Imaging Service of the Quirónsalud Murcia Hospital, stresses the importance of performing a mammogram.
Dr. Huertas points to tomosynthesis mammography as the great evolution in this diagnostic eld, since it allows a more advanced study by reducing the overlapping of structures and allowing the identi cation of lesions that could remain hidden. “Thanks to the tomosynthesis mammography we are able to diagnose lesions in earlier stages, reduce the performance of complementary tests or repetitions compared to conventional mammography, as well as improv the assessment of dense breasts,” says the radiology specialist at Quirónsalud Murcia.
In the case of men, prostate cancer is, without a doubt, the most common tumour, which forces us to emphasise the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of this tumour to preserve health in men. As for its early
diagnosis, Dr. Javier Pérez, urologist at the Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, recommends “the performance of prostate-speci c antigen (PSA) blood testing from the age of fty and, if elevated, digital rectal examination (DRE) as the most important tools to identify possible cases of prostate cancer in early stages.”
Another technique in case of suspicion will be fusion biopsy, which is considered the best diagnostic test, especially in the case of areas suspected of harbouring prostate cancer cells in an MRI. “It is especially recommended in lesions that are di cult to access, when lesions are observed in the MRI and the clinical suspicion of prostate cancer persists after a negative biopsy for a tumour, and to consider surveillance of low-risk tumours or focal therapies,” says the urology specialist at Quirónsalud Valencia.
If we talk about both sexes, the most prevalent type of tumour would be colon cancer, a tumour whose incidence, says Dr. Pedro Bretcha, head of Surgical Oncology at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, has increased by 22% in the last decade.
Regarding the early detection of colon cancer, there is consensus that a study should be carried out from the age of fty to all those people without risk factors, such as the annual faecal occult blood test, which has proven to be as e ective as other diagnostic tests. “As for people at increased risk,” says Dr. Bretcha,
“they should enter a study program at a younger age and more frequently. In the case of people with a rst-degree relative
under the age of 60 with colon cancer or two rst-degree relatives at any age, they should have a colonoscopy starting at
age 40 or 10 years before the relative’s diagnosis, and from that point on, repeat every ve years.”
When scrolling through your Instagram feed or watching your favourite celebrities strut the red carpet, it is as if they are resistant to imperfections with radiant skin and awless makeup, have you ever wondered how A Listers achieve that red carpet glow. What if we told you that you too could wake up each morning looking and feeling fabulous, ready to take on your day. If you are just as intrigued as we are, then you will love our guide to the most popular celebrity facials, all of which you can book in at Indiana’s hair & lash boutique .
So, without further ado, let’s take a closer look at some celebrity favourite beauty treatments:
Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning has been named
“Hollywood’s biggest skincare secret”, and we can de nitely see why stars wanted to keep this glow-boosting treatment all to themselves! Designed to remove the upper layer of skin cells, along with the annoying ‘peach fuzz’, dermaplaning allows you to exfoliate the skin thoroughly. To do this, a specialist blade will be used to very gently scrape away any old, dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, healthy layer of skin There are several fantastic bene ts of dermaplaning, the main of which being that it is e ective on all ages and most skin types. It is an excellent way to revitalise dull, dry or sun-damaged skin while unclogging your pores and resmoothing texture.
Laser Carbon Peel
One of Angelina Jolie’s favourite facials is the laser carbon peel, designed
to banish ne lines and blemishes to produce radiant, glowing and youthful skin. The treatment contains two stages, whereby the carbon product is applied to the skin to begin drawing out any toxins and contaminants, and is then removed using an innovative laser. The pores are cleansed of any built-up dirt thanks to the heat from the laser, leaving your skin feeling smooth and looking youthful.
The great thing about the laser carbon peel is that it doesn’t have to be used only on the face. You can also choose to have laser carbon peel on the neck and hands, reducing ne lines, targeting acne scars and much more.
Microneedling
By far, one of the most popular treatments in the celebrity world is
microneedling.
So, how does microneedling work?
Well, it is pretty straightforward. By making tiny punctures to the skin, you kickstart the natural healing process, promoting health while increasing collagen and elastin production. Together, this boosts your cell turnover, replacing any old, damaged cells with fresh, healthy skin that looks and feels radiant. Microneedling can also be a fantastic way to reduce common signs of ageing, such as ne lines and wrinkles, without using injectables. Due to the improvement in collagen and elastin production, your skin will look visibly smoother and more youthful while feeling much rmer.
Radio frequency
This in turn triggers the natural production of collagen which results in
improved skin structure and a rmer, healthier, more youthful-looking appearance. The even better news is that it continues to promote collagen production over the next 4 to 6 weeks following the treatment, so you’ll see the results improve even more as time goes on.
Lashes
Every celebrity is always armed with uttering eyelashes as they pose on the red carpet, and you’ll be pleased to know that it couldn’t be easier to replicate this look, at Indiana’s hair and lash boutique we o er individual lashes and also LVL Lash lift & tint.
With so many wonderful treatments to choose from, you most de nitely will not be short of inspiration for treating yourself.

Does drinking water improve dry skin?
Whether a person can improve their skin by drinking water has a lot to do with their current hydration level, experts said.
For people with a normal hydration status, increasing water intake unfortunately won’t translate to dewier skin, Kibbi explained.
Skin hydration depends largely on the health of its protective barrier, a lipid-rich layer that—when functioning properly—prevents water from escaping, she said.
Drinking water does promote skin health because it helps you “retain normal blood volume and circulation,” Kibbi explained. But continuous water consumption won’t impact the skin barrier’s ability to seal in moisture.
“As a dermatologist, I don’t recommend hydrating with water for the purpose of hydrating your skin,” she added.
Even if you do hydrate excessively, there’s no guarantee that water will go speci cally to the skin, said Carolyn Jacob, MD, boardcerti ed dermatologist and director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology.
After being digested, it could go “to other organs that require
more water than skin does, like your kidneys [or] brain,” she told Health.
Drinking too much water could even lead to a rare but serious condition called hyponatremia, in which the amount of sodium in the blood drops to dangerous levels, Jacob cautioned.
Experts said, however, that boosting water intake can enhance skin health (and overall bodily functioning) if your body really needs hydration.
“Extreme dehydration can result in a reduction of
circulating blood volume,” said Kibbi. “When that happens, blood vessels will pull water from the rest of your organs, including your skin.”
As a result, skin could appear sallow and more wrinkly.
Water deprivation can also a ect skin’s overall tone, according to Jacob. Not drinking enough means there won’t be as much water to bind to hyaluronic acid, a substance found in the skin that retains moisture and promotes rmness. This means “skin won’t have the snap that it should,” she said.

My widowed father is relying on me and my partner too much. We lost mum two years ago, and my sister and I are doing our best to keep Dad busy and care for him. He is a young 69 year old. Mum died of cancer; too young. We are all devastated still. We try everything from getting food delivered for Dad, to getting help in to clean the house. Ideally Dad should be doing these things himself, but he never did, and it was always mum who tended to the household needs. Dad can’t even boil an egg. He doesn’t know what day the bins go out, and recently had the Council write to him warning him about putting the wrong things in the wrong bins. It’s a nightmare because he gets onto us with his daily problems; which shouldn’t be problems really. My sister and I have responsibilities of our own; I recently had a baby girl and my partner and I are swamped; the minute we get the baby down, the phone rings and it’s Dad telling us he’s run out of bin liners.
Looks like you have two babies to look after. You need to ‘teach the man to fish’ here, not do everything for him, of which I am sure you are aware. Does your Dad have brothers or sisters to help? You need a plan. Arrange a sit down with your Dad, and hopefully one of his siblings or friends are willing to help. Give him all the information he needs to look after himself. You tell me your Dad drives and is capable, so he can go to the shops with no problem. It looks like he is still grieving badly, and could be suffering with anxiety, so
a trip to the GP would help. There are bereavement groups that can help with things like this. He will have lost a lot of confidence, and feel isolated; being with people who have been through the same thing will help. I am sending you some information on life coaching in bereaved situations. Also, your Dad could do with having a bit of fun; arranging a day trip in the fresh air, somewhere peaceful would blow away the cobwebs for you all.

What happens to your body when you skip breakfast
Skipping breakfast may lead to many short- and long-term e ects, and here we’ve outlined some that can a ect your physical and mental health and overall well-being.
You might sap your energy levels
“Upon waking in the morning, you‘ll have lower blood sugar levels, and if you remain in this state for an extended period, you may experience fatigue or brain fog,” says Marcie Vaske, M.S., LN, CNS. Why eat breakfast regularly? Simply put, our brains rely on glucose to work optimally, according to a 2021 book, Recent Developments
in Applied Microbiology and Biochemistry. And where does glucose come from? Primarily carbohydrates! More than likely, your breakfast meal will have a supply of carbohydrates to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels for the energy boost, mental focus and brain power you need.
You could throw o your hormones
Going too long without eating can drop your blood sugar levels and may also throw your hormone levels o course, according to the Endocrine Society. It starts with cortisol, a stress hormone. “Cortisol greatly impacts your
mood, your stress response and how you respond to daily tasks and situations. Generally, cortisol levels are higher when you wake up and decline as the day goes on. Eating a morning breakfast can help manage these levels and stress, giving you a mental boost to take on the day,” says Laura Purdy, M.D., M.B.A., a board-certi ed family medicine physician.
Over time, a disruption in your hormone balance may also impact reproductive health and menstruation, according to Rifkin. “You can support and stabilize these hormonal levels with consistent and nutritious morning meals,” says Rifkin.

Fines for passengers not wearing a seat belt?
Seatbelts correctly fastened have been a legal requirement in Spain in the front seats since 1975, but did not become compulsory in the back seats until the year 1992.
This means some classic cars may not have them – which is the only valid legal reason for not wearing them, according to the General Directorate of Tra c (DGT), part of Spain’s ministry for transport.
Fines are around €200 for not
is required. The new nish is left to cure et voilà, your leather is as good as new again. Of course, as the saying goes “prevention is better than cure” so if you have leather interior ( or leather seats & panniers on motorbikes ) that is still in good condition it’s best to clean and hydrate it every 6 months to prevent it from drying out and cracking causing it to lose its color. This is another service we o er here. Whether it’s faded, cracked leather, dull or scratched paintwork, misted headlights, a mouldy soft-top roof or a simple valet, we can help.

wearing a seatbelt, since this omission is classed by the 2021 Tra c Law as a ‘serious o ence’. Passengers aged at least 18 will be ned directly if they do not have their seatbelts on, but the driver – as long as he or she is wearing their own seatbelt correctly – is not considered legally responsible and will not be ned for the behaviour of other occupants.
If the non-belt-wearing passenger is aged 17 or under, they are legally
considered to be a ‘minor’, and their parents or guardians will have to pay the ne.
This also applies where the passenger is a very small child and is found travelling without the required baby or toddler booster seat.
It is not clear whether the underage passenger’s parents will be ned where they are absent from the scene – such as if another family member is looking after them that day and takes them out in a car.
But it is likely this is a case of ‘strict liability’: Where a person who commits an o ence subject to a ne is not an adult, this automatically passes to the person legally responsible for their actions, without presumption of fault on this adult’s behalf.
Seatbelts really do save lives, says DGT
As well as being mandatory, they are proven to save lives: The World Health Organisation (WHO) says wearing a seatbelt reduces the likelihood of death in a car crash by 60%.
In Spain, around 150 fatalities could have been prevented in the past year, the DGT reveals: Of all those who died in road crashes, 25% were not wearing a seatbelt and the authority estimates that at least half of those would still be alive today if they had buckled up.
Drivers who are caught not wearing a seatbelt, or not wearing it correctly, will normally lose four points from their licence.
Spanish licences start with 12 points, and these are deducted for o ences, with a 12-point loss leading to an automatic ban.
Lost points can only be recovered by paying and undertaking courses at approved State-run driving schools, with each course restoring two points.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at Villamartin
On the 21st. February 32 members and guests competed in an Individual Stableford competition at Villamartin. The weather was good, with generally only a gentle breeze to contend with. As usual the course was in good condition and the mostly fast greens made for tricky putting.
At the Lo Crispin Tavern where most of the competitors gathered after the game, we were supplied with Tapas as usual and the day’s prizes were distributed.

Sheerin’s Golf Society “Los Amigos Cup” at El Plantio
This is the sixth year we have played for this cup, sadly Tony Whyatt passed away ve years ago but fellow members and friends Andy Godfrey and Alan Martin have taken the sponsorship in Tony’s memory.
This was our second visit this season to El Plantio, the course was in fair condition considering tee boxes, greens and bunkers weren’t up to their normal standard for high season. Once again, the weather was excellent and with the later tee o at 11.20 the temperature at a pleasant 25 degrees and pure sun. We played Tony’s favourite team format which had four players in a team changing partners every 6 holes scoring with the better ball Stableford points.
Six teams took part in a very tight scoring competition with only 12 points between sixth and rst places, the eventual winners of the Los Amigos Cup, winning by one point, were Alan Martin, Steve Ayre, Brian Gordon and Andy Ramage with 94 points, runners up were Sean McGuinness, Steve Hopkins, Martin
Morgan and Steve Day with 93 points. All the nearest the pins were won hole 1 “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon, holes 4 and 15 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, hole 4 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and holes 11 and 18 “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch, best front 9 went to “I Want my Handicap Cut” Ian Birch with 24 points and best back 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 22 points, the two’s pot of €15 was shared between “I’ve Had my Handicap Cut” Steve Gain on hole 9 and “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon on hole 7.
The football card was won by Steve Day with Blackpool winning €40 and raising €40 for this year’s charities 2024.

Abbey Anglers
On Tuesday the 20th of February we shed the 7th round of the Abbey angling cup at El Bosquet. 20 anglers turned out on a very pleasant warm and sunny day. The rotation of the pegs continued and this week we shed pegs 8 to 16 and 26 to 40.
Runaway winner was the venue maestro himself, Neil McBernie who produced a fantastic performance on peg 10. He shed the pole at 16m with maggots shed about 2 feet o the bottom and weighed a remarkable 37.40kg.
In second place continuing his comeback was Steve Higgins from peg 37. Steve shed the pole mainly shallow across on maggot and weighed
very respectable kg.
In Third place was the ever reliable Richard Smith who despite having neck ache watching Neil catch all day managed a few of his own on the pole with maggots for 15.82kg.
Rods N Reels
The following day 10 anglers The following day we shed the same complex but shed from pegs a1 to 16. Richard Smit continued his good form and used maggots on the pole and weighed 18.60kg of carp from peg 1.
In second place was Bill Reade with 16.80kg from peg 6. In third place making a welcome return was the Welsh Wizard, Doug Hornblow with
14.10kg from peg 14 caught on the feeder.
Word of Warning
On the Thursday a few of us went up to the rio Segura at Murcia to have a pleasure session prior to collecting the federation cards. The shing was really good with lots of quality carp caught but was spoiled when I had my phone stolen by an African gentleman who distracted me and the stole my phone from my side tray. Extra vigilance should be taken when shing this stretch in the future. I am pictured with the rst carp I caught that was about 8lb in weight.
