Brit arrested for murdering wife in Orihuela Costa

a 64-year-old British woman has allegedly been murdered by her husband in orihuela costa, according to pilar Bernabé, the Government

delegate in the Valencian community. neighbours of the British couple in la Florida phoned the Guardia civil in the early hours of Sunday (26th march)

morning after hearing shouting. When officers arrived at the property, they found the lifeless body of the woman inside with multiple stab wounds. her husband, a 69-yearold man was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital with a stab wound to the stomach. Guardia civil officers are investigating the events leading up to the tragedy.

all indications are pointing to a case of gender violence as it was confirmed that the man has been listed in the VioGén database since 2019 for a previous assault on the murdered woman. however, pilarBernabé explained that at the time the victim didn’t proceed and so no charges were made against the man. as no judicial measures were

launched, the case became inactive in 2020.

currently, there have been 10 domestic violence murders in 2023 and 1,195 since 2003. in Spain, the prevalence of intimate partner violence is estimated to be 43 percent for emotional abuse, 8% for physical abuse and 12% for sexual abuse. Spanish embassies and consulates attended to 251 new cases of violence against Spanish women in 2022. in most cases, as in previous years, this was violence perpetrated by their partner or ex-partner.

december 2022 Spain’s worst month for gender-based violence in 20 years, with 13 women being killed in the span of 28 days. at least six of the incidents happened after complaints had already been filed. Spain’s government has

grown increasingly concerned as this was the highest number of genderbased murders since records began in 2003.

at the time the country’s interior minister, Fernando Grande-marlaska, expressed his “deep frustration” at the “unusual and terrible proliferation” of such crimes and has ordered security forces to maximise the protection of the victims.

Early wildfire in Spain rages on

Some 700 firefighters are battling Spain’s first major forest fire of the year which was raging out of control 48 hours after it began, forcing 1,500 people to flee. in an update on twitter, the regional emergency services said the fire in Villanueva de Viver, some 90 kilometres north of Valencia, was a “highlycomplex blaze taking place in weather conditions similar to those of the summer”.

“700 people have been mobilised for the operation to fight the fire. it has affected 3,900 hectares and has a 35-kilometre perimeter,” they said. Some 1,500 people had been forced out of their homes on Friday and the huge blaze remained “very voracious” with the work to put it out “very complicated”.Firefighters tweeted that they had deployed some 20 aerial units to help tackle the fire.

Firefighters said the blaze was more typical of summer than of late march. With the vegetation dried out by a lack of moisture in the atmosphere in recent months and large amounts of combustible biomass in the forests, conditions were “perfect” for such a blaze.

Alleged Torrevieja murderer arrested for drug trafficking

the Guardia civil has arrested four people, including an irishman who was on bail for the alleged murder and motorway burial of friend carl carr in la Siesta, torrevieja, in 2018. officers believe the irishman was the leader of the torrevieja-based gang that sent parcels identified as containing vehicle parts from fake automotive companies. police seized almost 90 kilos of drugs that were being sent in packages disguised as car partsto the United Kingdom, ireland and the United States. officers seized the packages at a transport company, at madrid airport and at the suspects home, where they also found a gun, silencer and bullets. he has been charged with drug trafficking, belonging to a criminal gang and possession of an illegal weapon.

these charges are added to the alleged murder of carl carr, for which the suspect was out on bail and the time of the latest arrest. carr’s murder is believed to have been the result of a love triangle. police believe he was killed in the villa he shared wit the suspect in la Siesta. he was arrested after the 38-year-olds body was discovered by the ap-7 motorway between algorfa and Benijófar. three other suspects including the suspects British part-time model girlfriend and a UK-born female bar manager were also held over the murder, with a second irishman identified at the time as the suspected co-author of the homicide and made the subject of a european arrest Warrant.the case has yet to come to trial.

Alicante Airport security boost

alicante-elche airport has been given a boost in security resources to cope with growing passenger numbers and extra post-Brexit checks. thirty-four new Guardia civil officers have been deployed to the facility in time for the easter holiday season, which is an increase of more than 30 percent in staffing levels. the officers will focus on the prevention of smuggling, fraud, and tax crimes, as well as being responsible for airport security. immigration and

passport control will remain under the control of the national police. the new contingent has already started training at the airport, becoming familiar with the building and their duties. their presence will help the airport, one of the biggest and busiest in Spain, deal with the expected influx of travellers through the airport during the summer season, especially now that Brexit has left additional checks needed for each British passenger.

La Zenia traffic and accessibility study

Renovation of sewage network in Rambla de Villamartín

Ángelnoguera, councillor for infrastructures, has been discussing the upgrade in the4 sewage network on the road that leads from la Zenia to Villamartin. h explained “the need for intervention is justified given that in episodes of heavy rain the runoff channel by the boulevard has exposeda buried section of the collector and caused frequent breaks that need repairing”.

the object of the work is to renew the deteriorated section of sewage collector that runs along the rambla de las estacas. to maintain the service, two pumping station will be

installed. the firstwill push the wastewater to the existing network that will continue in service and finally discharge into the second pumping station. which will push the wastewater to the existing collector that runs along canyon hills Street. the upgraded system will solve the current problem of ruptures in the existing collector during periods of heavy rain.

the first phase of this project was carried out outside the area of the boulevard on manuel de Falla and canyon hills streets, and consist of the installation of pVc pipes, with a budget of 129,249 euros, from the

Sewerage renovation Fund.

Finally, councillornoguera indicated that “prior to the start of the second phase of th project, various contacts have been maintained with the Segura hydrographic confederation, which has to authorise the work, in order to agree on the technical solutions to be adopted for the planned works in the surrounding area of the boulevard and in the surrounding areas of the posttrasvase canal”.the amount of this work is 695,490.94 euros charged to the renovation Funds with a 5-month execution period.

Animal cruelty outlawed in Spain

the department of infrastructures has carried out a study of traffic, mobility, accessibility and parking in la Zenia in order to guide traffic reorganisation projects in the coming years. according to councillor Ángelnoguera, the study focuses on determining “the existing possibilities for decongesting traffic at the n-332 roundabout, improving internal circulation, as well as improving accessibility and pedestrian and bicycle traffic at the same time as optimising parking spaces”. Specifically, the study highlights the need to simplify

the directions of circulation in the area to the north of avenida de la playa, so that the sidewalks can be widened to improve accessibility for pedestrians, in addition to improving signage. the document also supports a network based on an axis parallel to the sea (paseo del mar) together with three perpendicular axes in las palmeras, San antonio Zen and la marina streets, which allows integration and connection with the environment. these will be based in lanes segregated from the road and pedestrians. regarding parking,

the provision of three park-andride areas has been planned that would be connected to the beach and the la Zenia Boulevard shopping centre by a shuttle service.

“this study will serve as the basis for the work to be done in the coming years and will remodel the streets and rearrange traffic flow in la Zenia,” noguera pointed out, while recalling that this area of orihuela costa multiplies its population by eight in the summer season with the consequent increase in road traffic and congestion.

Spain’s parliament has given the go-ahead to an animal welfare law, while also amending the penal code to bring in stiffer penalties for abuses.

“this is a very important day because parliament has passed the first animal rights law,” since Spain returned to democracy following the 1975 death of dictator Francisco Franco, said Social rights minister ione Belarra of the hard-left podemos party. the law ends “the impunity of animal abusers in an achievement that responds to the sensibilities of our fellow citizens,” she said.

the legislation makes it obligatory for anyone adopting a dog to undergo “training” and

imposes a ban on leaving a dog alone for more than 24 hours.

it also makes it obligatory for owners to sterilise cats in a bid to control births and avoid the abandonment or killing of unwanted litters. changes to the penal code also stiffen penalties for animal cruelty, ranging from 18 months in prison if the animal needs veterinary treatment or up to three years if the animal dies under “aggravating factors”.

Until now, the toughest sentence was 18 months behind bars if an animal died.

the legislation mainly relates to pets and doesn’t include animals raised for slaughter.nor does it

concern hunting dogs, sparking a rift within the government. although podemos had wanted hunting dogs included, the Socialists of prime minister pedro Sanchez did not.the legislation also tightens the law for animal breeders but has no bearing on bullfighting.

Just over a year ago, Spain passed a law recognising animals as “living, sentient beings” for the first time, and not mere objects, allowing for the shared custody of pets in divorce cases. Similar legislation is already in place in several other european countries including austria, France, Germany, portugal and Switzerland.

Sanchez sees off no confidence vote

Spain’s Socialist-led minority government has comfortably seen off a no-confidence vote tabled by the far-right Vox party, as the country prepares for regional and municipal elections in two months’ time and a general election before the end of the year.

although Vox’s motion, which was debated in congress last tuesday and Wednesday, was never likely to attract support from other parties, Vox had been hoping to capitalise on public anger over the government’s botched sexual offences legislation – which has resulted in reduced prison terms for hundreds of convicted felons – and its overhaul of sedition legislation.

however, as had been widely anticipated, the move was defeated by 53 votes to 201, with 91 abstentions. the conservative people’s party (pp), which is ahead of the Socialists in the polls and seeking to return to the centre ground under its newish leader, alberto núñezFeijóo, chose to abstain rather than be seen as cosying up to Vox.

analysts say the move could potentially hurt Vox’s

popularity in an election year. Several recent polls projected Vox would get fewer seats than in the 2019 election. Vox based its motion on allegations that the government had sided with catalan and Basque separatists who supported its policies in parliament in exchange for concessions, “wrong and confiscatory” economic and fiscal policy and other accusations. it demanded the immediate ousting of the administration and a snap election.

the two-day debate preceding the vote allowed Sanchez to take the stage to rip into the opposition and highlight his coalition

Spain needs more transparency

Spain needs more transparency over the pegasus spyware hacking scandal, a european parliament committee has decided at the end of a two-day fact-finding mission to madrid.

the cross-party european committee, which investigates the illegal use of spyware in eU states, has been looking into espionage allegations involving pegasus software which can turn smartphones into pocket spying devices.

“We urge the authorities to expeditiously cooperate with the courts to allow the maximum transparency” in these cases, committee chair Jeroen lenaers, a dutch mep, told reporters.

government’s achievements as the campaign for regional elections due in may and a general ballot in december is heating up. “ the only aim of this destructive motion is going back 50 years. there is not a candidate to lead the government or programme, only a party that promotes disorder and seeks to undermine the democratic values,” Sanchez said during the debate. the main opposition pp, which had voted against a previous Vox-sponsored noconfidence vote in 2020, this time abstained, drawing scorn from Sanchez, who accused the party of essentially siding with the far right.

“Victims of spyware deserve more information and transparency,” he said, while acknowledging that the legal framework in Spain was “in line with fundamental rights protection”.

the delegation of 10 meps from six countries has previously visited israel, poland, Greece, cyprus and hungary as it pursues its probe into the israeli-made software which can read a phone’s messages, track its location and secretly turn on the camera and microphone.

last year, catalonia’s regional leadership accused Spain’s intelligence services of using pegasus software to hack the mobile phones of dozens of separatist politicians, sparking

a crisis that prompted the government to sack its spy chief.the accusations emerged after canada’s cybersecurity watchdog citizen lab published a report in april saying the phones of at least 65 catalan separatists had been tapped following the failed 2017 independence bid.

Several weeks later, spy chief paz esteban told a parliamentary committee 18 catalan separatists, including catalan regional leader pere aragones, had been spied with pegasus software but always with court approval. She was later sacked. around the same time, the government admitted the phones of prime minister pedro Sanchez and two other top ministers had also been hacked by the same spyware, blaming it on “an external attack” which the press blamed on morocco. although lenaers admitted the committee lacked “proof” that morocco was behind it, he said it was “a plausible candidate”.

“We even have interlocutors

of our mission today and yesterday who even refused to comment on the potential links to morocco out of fear of retaliation by the moroccan authorities. that for me already makes it plausible,” he said.

Both cases of spying involving the ministers and the catalan separatists are currently before the courts.

aragones met the committee in madrid, describing the espionage as “a new chapter in the dirty war against those of us who defend the independence of catalonia”.

“democratic institutions and representatives of catalan citizens have been treated like criminals,” he said.

an interim report published by the european parliament in november found that pegasus spyware had been used “illegitimately” to conduct surveillance in at least four eU countries — Greece, Spain, poland and hungary — and called for a moratorium on the sale, acquisition, transfer and use of spyware in the eU.

Earthquake emergency drill held in all schools in Torrevieja

more than 12,000 students from all schools in torrevieja lived a very special day last week by participating simultaneously in a seismic emergency drill, which was carried out on the occasion of the 194th anniversary of the earthquake that occurred in the Vega Baja in 1829 and has been organized by the city of torrevieja and the State Security Forces and emergency Services (local police, civil Guard, Fire department, SamU and civil protection). in total, there have been more than 80 troops who have

participated today in this earthquake drill.

For this drill there has been an advanced command post in the main fire station of torrevieja, from where everything that happened was coordinated and recorded.

in two educational centres (ceip cuba and ieS mare nostrum) an operational control was installed, with the rescues that would be carried out in the event of a catastrophe of this type.

Are Your Savings Still In The UK?

many people who have moved to Spain do not want to bring all their savings and investments with them to this country. Spanish banks do not have a great track record and then there is currency question – Sterling or convert to euros?

one of the main problems with keeping your money in the UK, is a lack of adviser to keep an eye on your investments and switch funds when the need arises. Your UK financial adviser should not continue to work on your behalf if you are living as a Spanish tax resident.

another problem is that UK based savings like iSa’s, premium Bonds and other nS&i products

are not suitable for Spanish residents.

as a Spanish tax resident there are a number or products offered by some of the worlds’ largest financial institutions specifically tailored to meet your investment needs. indeed, one such provider, prudential international, have a Spanish tax compliant savings bond that outperforms the UK equivalent simply because of the taxation treatment.

here at Seagate Wealth we understand that many ex-pats do not wish to bring their money to Spain and for that reason we work with a number of product providers to ensure their money works as hard as possible with minimum

risk. the prudential savings bond offers clients a way to grow their money virtually tax-free, with no need to report on their annual tax return or the modelo 720. the other major benefit is the money is not held here in Spain, but in the republic of ireland.

the Seagate team has a wealth of experience in providing advice on all aspects of savings and investment options. if you have an investment, but no adviser, we can help to get your portfolio back on track.

Funfair will be moved to the Antonio Soira Park due to the harbour works

last week the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolon, along with the councilman of occupation of public roads, Federico alarcón, municipal technicians and responsible for the works being executed in the port, met with representatives of the association of industrial torrevejense Fair (atiF) and other employers of the fair, to communicate first hand the current status of the works and the situation in which it is as it progresses the same.

the technician in charge of the

works on the port site informed them of all the existing reports on the instability of the land, and the mayor himself gave them several options to try to work in one or more seasons in another location, given that they must move from the port site due to the danger that exists because of the instability, which does not affect the paseo de la libertad where the traditional stalls of “los hippies” are located. all the fairgrounds and the municipal authorities have finally decided to move the fair

of attractions of torrevieja to the antonio Soria park to start work as soon as possible, being the city council itself which will bear all the costs of conditioning the land and the installation of light for the operation of the fairground attractions.

Finally, eduardo dolon wanted to thank the tone and behavior at the meeting of all the fairgrounds of torrevieja, as well as the image of unity and understanding regarding the move to be carried out as soon as possible.

The difference between an early and late diagnosis for glaucoma

Glaucoma is the world’s leading cause of irreversible blindness . during World Glaucoma Week (12-18 march), Specsavers Ópticas urged people to get their eyes tested regularly and sharing three stories of glaucoma which show what a difference the speed of diagnosis can make to the outcome.

Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged. it is usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases the pressure inside.

it can be treated but early detection is important. if left untreated, glaucoma can cause visual impairment and damage that cannot be reversed. But if it’s detected and treated early enough, further damage to vision can be minimised or prevented.

in 2022 Specsavers Ópticas stores in Javea, la Zenia and Fuengirola all shared stories of signs of glaucoma being discovered during routine eye tests, which show the importance of early diagnosis.

early diagnosis = damage minimised at Specsavers Ópticas Fuengirola, ian elsby went to check whether he could wear contact lenses, just six months after his last eye test. he had no symptoms, his vision was normal and there was no sign of damage to the optic nerve, yet he had highpressure in his eye – also known as intraocular pressure.

optometrist and store director, Judith Borland explains:‘high pressure in the eye is one of the symptoms of

glaucoma, so we gave ian a letter to take to his doctor and request a referral to an ophthalmologist at his local hospital. he was diagnosed with glaucoma and given drops to use at night to control his eye pressure. Fortunately, he was diagnosed at an early stage and still maintains very good vision.’

ian adds: ‘i had no symptoms and my vision was fine as far as i was aware, i had no family history of glaucoma. So, i was shocked to be told that i could be suffering from it! i didn’t really know what it was, or what the outcome could be, until the Specsavers Ópticas team explained the severity of the condition. once i knew it could cause blindness, i was so happy that they identified it at such an early stage.’

later diagnosis = Some peripheral vision loss in Specsavers Ópticas Javea, Willem Koopmans had been experiencing headaches and noticed that his eyesight was getting worse, but put it down to just needing new glasses. however, during a comprehensive eye test, the team noticed signs of glaucoma, including a deep excavation of the optic nerve in his left eye, which had damaged his peripheral vision. they gave him an urgent referral to San carlos private hospital, who diagnosed the glaucoma and started mr Koopmans on treatment.

optometrist and store director, cecilia navarro explains:‘ thankfully now that he is on treatment the optic nerve excavation will not get any worse and overall, his vision remains good. however, he would have lost a lot more vision if he hadn’t had his eyes tested

and urgently sought medical attention.

‘Vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible, which is why we encourage people to have their eyes tested every two years and come in as soon as they notice changes to their vision or headaches. early diagnosis is key to saving sight!’

leaving glaucoma too long = Significant permanent vision loss

Unfortunately, if left too late, severe and permanent damage can be caused, as was shown in the case of douglas addison. mr addison had a family history of glaucoma and was first diagnosed with it 10 years ago, but thought it was under control. in 2021 he noticed he was losing his peripheral vision,a common sign that the glaucoma is permanently damaging sight, and booked an eye test at Specsavers Ópticas in la Zenia. during the test the optometrist found that his eye pressure was extremely high, they urgently referred mr addison to hospital where they confirmed his diagnosis and performed a surgical procedure to stop the glaucoma getting worse.

Unfortunately, he lost 75% of the vision in his right eye. But mr addison remains very grateful to the team at the la Zenia store for the referral, and the surgical team who stopped him losing vision in both eyes.

‘i have lost 75% of my vision in my right eye and am left with permanently hazy vision. i would say to anyone who hasn’t had their eyes tested before, or hasn’t had their eyes tested for a while, please do it. it is very, very important. Vision loss can happen to anyone, so

Torrevieja will have the biggest pump track in the world

the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolon, and the councillor for parks and Gardens, antonio Vidal, visited the progress of work on the park la Siesta. together with the construction manager of Urdecon constructions, José manuel Fernández, and the technical director of the construction of the pump track, christian tidow, they have checked, first hand, the advanced state in which the work is at.

the technical director of the pump track wanted to emphasise that “this is the largest completely asphalted track in the world, a pioneer in Spain. once it is finished, it will have double the surface area, allowing fans of any kind of sliding sport on wheels to use and enjoy this track. it will be a before and after in our country”.

the final surface area will be 4,200m2, divided into three levels: specialist/advanced, intermediate and children’s level. the course will have a longitudinal surface of 300 metres for the advanced track, 180 metres for the intermediate track and 60 metres for the children’s track. in addition, once the asphalting of the track has been completed, it will be painted in different colours to differentiate the levels, as well as the direction of the track. eduardo dolón wanted to

highlight the great work that is being done to create the track, which is expected to be finished in the second half of may, much earlier than originally planned. likewise, the rest of the park is also progressing at a good pace so that “next week some of the work on the upper part of the park will be finished. as we indicated when the works began, the aim is that the park, in its entirety, will be finished by this summer, and this is being achieved,” said the mayor.

For his part, the councillor for parks and Gardens, wanted to recognise and highlight the work that both companies are doing, not only to have the works finished as soon as possible, but also for their commitment to this project, the

care and professionalism they are putting into it. “We are facing one of the most important and attractive projects of the municipality, which is going to become a great multisport area,” said antonio Vidal.

la Siesta park will have, in addition to the pump track, an agility area for large dogs and another for small dogs, a large central area that divides the park with two circular squares, skating circuits, playgrounds, bio-healthy areas, skating rink, hockey rink, football, basketball, indoor football, petanque courts, calisthenics area, bike path and three paddle tennis courts, making it the first park in torrevieja that will have courts to enjoy this sport so fashionable.

don’t take your sight for granted.

‘i’d also like to say a big thank you to the team. if their optometrist hadn’t sent me to a&e, i would be blind. While i did lose sight in one eye, i can lead a full life and am so grateful that with the operation and treatment my vision won’t get worse.’ the experts at Specsavers Ópticas hope that by sharing these three cases, people will be encouraged to get their

eyes tested.

regular check-ups with Specsavers Ópticas can help you to maintain clear and comfortable vision. For most people, it’s advisable to have an eye test every two years, but it’s best to attend earlier if any eye problems occur or if advised by your optometrist. Visit www. specsavers.es to find your nearest store and book an eye test.

kitchen - I get a cup of tea, but precisely one hour after I have arrived, and then the pots and pans come out while she makes their evening meal. She then lays the table for four, and no more; not that I want to stay for a meal, but it is deliberate and quite obvious that she doesn’t want me to stay any longer because she also starts looking at her watch. Now, she is making a huge fuss about how I am abandoning her and her family to go and ‘enjoy myself in Spain’. Your longer email tells me that she will not discuss matters with you. In this case, I would write her a letter (not an email), on nice paper, handwritten and without anger. Try not to accuse her, but tell her that her treatment of you has not gone unnoticed; make sure you detail every slight. Tell her you are

hurt by her years of unkindness, and cannot understand her reasons for sodoing. Tell her that your plans to move will not change, and you welcome her and her family for holidays any time they wish to visit, and they will be most welcome. You can say that you hope that your relationship will improve, but this will only happen if she wishes it. Then, the ball is in her court so to speak.

I have two children, a son and a daughter. Over the years I have mentioned retiring to be near my friend, and had visited her often in Spain with the hopes of relocating there myself. My relationship with my son and his wife has always been good; however things haven’t been good with my daughter for some years. I have never said anything to her but she hasn’t treated me well. I visit once a week in the afternoon to spend time with her two children, but still I am accused of not taking enough interest in her or her family. I only know this from my daughter in law, who tells me what she is saying. I have made a big effort over the years to ingratiate myself with my daughter, asking her round for tea, only to get a refusal or excuse. I am excluded from so many of her family gatherings. I get along with her husband ok and he thanks me for all I do for them and the kids, but nothing from her. Rent prices break a record by exceeding one thousand euros in Alicante and Benidorm.

rents are soaring in the province of alicante and reaching record highs. With an increase of 23.4%, alicante is the second city where the price of rent has risen the most in Spain over the past year, behind Barcelona (25.7%), with a monthly price of 9.5 euros per square metre. this means that a flat of 100 square metres would have a rental price of 950 euros per month, although there are areas where they are asking for more than 1,000 euros per month, an amount that has also been reached in Benidorm and some of its neighbouring towns. the figure is a record that has not been exceeded since april 2006, when it reached an all-time high of 9.2 euros per square metre. in the midst of escalating prices, citizens are having problems with their shopping basket, fuel, electricity and now renting a house. the amounts that are being demanded, despite the fact that the Government’s council of ministers has guaranteed that prices can be increased by more than 2%, are causing numerous problems for all those who have opted to rent because they cannot afford the cost of a mortgage. the real estate sector blames this rise in prices on the

fall in the supply of flats for rent, mainly due to the fear of nonpayment by owners, who are withdrawing their flats from the market. But on the other hand, demand continues to grow, causing the consequent increase in prices.

according to data from the real estate portal el idealista, rents rose by an average of 18.8% in the province of alicante during the past 2022, with an average of 8.9 euros per square metre per month. all of this with notable differences between the municipalities and neighbourhoods where the property is located. in the capital of alicante, the highest prices are found in the residential areas par excellence, such as playa de San Juan and cabo de las huertas,

with 10.9 euros per square metre; 9.9 in the city centre. although in San Blas and the new area of paU 2, the average price is 860 euros, there are flats for which more than 1,000 euros are also being asked. another of the areas where prices have risen the most is carolinas Bajas, with an increase of 28.9%. and although Virgen del remedio and Juan XXiii had the lowest prices (6.6 euros), the increase was 25.5%. in Sant Joan d’alacant the price increased by 27.7%; while in el campello, by 15%. this is what is known as the “belt effect”: as tenants are unable to find flats in the big cities, they try to look for flats in neighbouring towns, causing a corresponding rise in prices.

Windows computer?”

System restore is going back to restore the pc to an earlier date. a system restore point is a backup copy of important Windows operating system (oS) files and settings that can be used to recover the system to an earlier point in time in the event of system failure or instability. in case anything breaks or your pc crashes, you can use the System restore feature in Windows to restore the pc to an earlier date. it usually takes about 30-45 minutes to complete a system restore. and it can take up to 1.5-2 hours if your pc is running slow.

System restore takes a “snapshot” of some system files and the Windows registry and saves them as restore points. When an install failure or data corruption occurs, System restore can return a system to working condition without you having to reinstall the operating system. does System restore affect personal files?

it repairs the Windows environment by reverting to the files and settings that were saved in the restore point. note: it does

not affect your personal data files on the computer.

System restore cannot help you recover your personal deleted files such as photos, documents, emails, or videos. So, you will need to find another way to recover your personal files.

EASTER RECIPES

Easter Egg

Cheesecake

Ingredients

vegetable oil, for the tin

200g digestive biscuits

80g unsalted butter, melted

250g chocolate mini eggs or leftover

Easter eggs

400g full-fat soft cheese

150g icing sugar

1 tsp vanilla bean paste

400g double cream

Method

STEP 1

Oil a 20cm deep springform cake tin and line with baking parchment. Tip the digestive biscuits into a food bag or the bowl of a food processor and crush or blitz to a fine crumb. Mix with the melted butter, then press into the base of the prepared cake tin and chill for 30 mins.

STEP 2

Roughly chop half the chocolate mini eggs. Beat the soft cheese with the icing sugar and vanilla until just combined using an electric whisk. Clean the beaters, then beat the double cream to stiff peaks in a separate bowl.

Gently fold the whipped cream into the soft cheese mixture along with the chopped chocolate mini eggs. Spoon the cheesecake mixture over the biscuit base, then smooth the surface with a palette knife or spatula. Chill overnight.

STEP 3

The next day, carefully release the cheesecake from the tin (you may need to run a cutlery knife around the edge to loosen it) and top with the remaining

whole chocolate mini eggs to decorate.

Cheesy Green Veg

Gratin

Ingredients

1 cauliflower (450g), broken into florets, leaves reserved

200g purple sprouting broccoli

200g spinach

70g unsalted butter

70g plain flour

900ml whole milk

2 tsp English mustard

150g mature cheddar

½ bunch of chives, finely chopped

Method

STEP 1

Bring a pan of lightly salted water to the boil and cook the cauliflower florets for 3 mins. Add the broccoli and cook for 2 mins more. Drain in a colander and leave to steam-dry.

STEP 2

Tip the spinach into a large saucepan, add 2 tbsp water and cook with the lid on over a low heat for 3-4 mins until wilted, then tip into a sieve and press the excess moisture out of it with the back of a wooden spoon. Set aside.

STEP 3

Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas

7. Melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat until foaming, then stir in the flour to create a thick paste. Cook for 2 mins, remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the milk in several additions until lump-free. Return to the heat and whisk until thickened. Whisk in the mustard, most of the cheese and the chives. Season to taste.

STEP 4

Arrange the vegetables, including the cauliflower leaves, in a medium ovenproof dish. Pour over the sauce, then sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 25-30 mins or until golden and bubbling.

Slow Cooker Leg of Lamb

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil

1.3kg boneless leg of lamb, tied

30g unsalted butter

2 tbsp plain flour

300ml lamb stock

200ml red wine

2 red onions, cut into wedges

2 garlic cloves, sliced

5 sprigs of thyme

5 sprigs of rosemary

Mashed potatoes and steamed veg, to serve

Method

STEP 1

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Add the lamb and brown on each side for 4-5 mins. Set the slow cooker to low. Melt the butter in a saucepan until foaming, then stir through the flour. Whisk in the stock gradually until incorporated, add the wine and bring to the boil. Set aside.

STEP 2

Put the onion, garlic, thyme and rosemary into your slow cooker and sit the lamb on top. Pour over the lamb gravy. Put the lid on and cook for 8 hrs or until soft and tender.

STEP 3

Remove the lamb and set, covered, on a plate. Strain the liquid into a pan and simmer until slightly thickened. Serve the lamb thickly sliced or shredded (it’ll be quite soft) with mashed potatoes, green veg and the gravy.

Hot Cross Buns

Ingredients

300ml full-fat milk, plus 2 tbsp more

50g butter

500g strong bread flour

1tsp salt

75g caster sugar

1tbsp sunflower oil

7g sachet fast-action or easy-blend yeast

1 egg, beaten

75g sultanas

50g mixed peel

zest 1 orange

1 apple, peeled, cored and finely chopped

1tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp mixed spice

For the cross

75g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

For the glaze

3tbsp apricot jam

Method

STEP 1

Bring 300ml full-fat milk to the boil, then remove from the heat and add 50g butter. Leave to cool until it reaches hand temperature. Put 500g strong bread flour, 1 tsp salt, 75g caster sugar and 7g sachet fast-action or easyblend yeast into a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Pour in the warm milk and butter mixture, then add 1 beaten egg. Using a wooden spoon, mix well, then bring everything together with your hands until you have a sticky dough.

STEP 2

Tip on to a lightly floured surface and knead by holding the dough with one hand and stretching it with the heal of the other hand, then folding it back on itself. Repeat for 5 mins until smooth and elastic. Put the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with oiled cling film

and leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size and a finger pressed into it leaves a dent.

STEP 3

With the dough still in the bowl, tip in 75g sultanas, 50g mixed peel, zest of 1 orange, 1 finely chopped apple and 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Knead into the dough, making sure everything is well distributed. Leave to rise for 1 hr more, or until doubled in size, again covered by some well-oiled cling film to stop the dough getting a crust.

STEP 4

Divide the dough into 15 even pieces (about 75g per piece). Roll each piece into a smooth ball on a lightly floured work surface. Arrange the buns on one or two baking trays lined with parchment, leaving enough space for the dough to expand. Cover (but don’t wrap) with more oiled cling film, or a clean tea towel, then set aside to prove for 1 hr more.

STEP 5

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Mix 75g plain flour with about 5 tbsp water to make the paste for the cross – add the water 1 tbsp at a time, so you add just enough for a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag with a small nozzle. Pipe a line along each row of buns, then repeat in the other direction to create crosses. Bake for 20 mins on the middle shelf of the oven, until golden brown.

STEP 6

Gently heat 3 tbsp apricot jam to melt, then sieve to get rid of any chunks. While the jam is still warm, brush over the top of the warm buns and leave to cool.

Presbyopia and cataracts: symptoms, operation and recovery

The specialists of the ophthalmology service at Quirónsalud Torrevieja answer the most frequently asked questions about cataracts and presbyopia.

What are cataracts and presbyopia?

Cataracts and presbyopia are nowadays considered to be the most common pathologies linked to the ageing of the crystalline lens. The crystalline lens can be defined as the eye’s natural lens located between the iris and the vitreous body.

The specialists explain the concept of cataracts in a simple way, “This crystalline lens that we are talking about becomes more opaque around the age of 60, this is what cataracts are”.

On the other hand, presbyopia can be defined as the gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on close objects due to the loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens.

At this point, the question of whether presbyopia can be solved without resorting to lenses or glasses may arise.

In this sense, the experts argue that there are various solutions for this without resorting to glasses from the age of 50 onwards, “At around the age of 50 the method of choice is to replace the crystalline lens with a multifocal intraocular lens”.

Cataract and presbyopia surgery

In both presbyopia and cataract surgery, the technique consists of

aspirating the contents of the crystalline lens and implanting an intraocular lens inside it. It is a definitive, lifelong technique. “The results are excellent, but it is essential to carry out an exhaustive and personalised study, to know the patient’s activities in order to offer the best alternative,” explain the experts.

Frequently asked questions about cataract and presbyopia operations

Price of the operation. In this regard, the amount will depend on the specialist who is in charge of the operation and the clinic.

Postoperative period. It is quite simple, as these are painless surgeries, in addition, they have a quick recovery.

It is only necessary to use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops.

Duration of the operation. It does not usually last more than 20 minutes on average.

The eyes heal completely in just 2 to 4 weeks after the operation.

Once the surgery has been performed, there are a few things to keep in mind:

• Do not lift too much weight.

• Do not practice risky sports.

• Avoid direct water in the eyes.

• Avoid wearing make-up for the first two weeks.

• Do not expose to toxic agents.

• Do not sunbathe.

Occasional symptoms after cataract surgery

Once the cataract operation has been performed, certain side effects may appear, which are transitory and disappear very quickly. However, if they do not disappear within an hour after surgery, it is advisable to ask your ophthalmologist for information.

Can cataracts and presbyopia be treated in the same operation?

“Yes, in fact, a patient who has had

presbyopia surgery will never develop cataracts,” explain the ophthalmologists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja.

This statement is due to the fact that, when a person undergoes presbyopia surgery, at the same time they can be considered to be undergoing early cataract surgery. The reverse is also true: removing a cataract also corrects presbyopia.

When should cataract surgery be performed?

The optimal time to have cataract surgery is when people begin to notice limitations in their vision. The worse the cataracts get, the more difficult it is to remove them surgically.

Living and loving my slim trim shape, so happy to finally be healthy.

Q: What made you decide to lose weight?

A: 10 years ago I had a cage fitted in my lower spine as I needed 4 discs replacing. I was in a wheelchair for a long time; I needed to learn to walk again. I hated the way I looked and felt and my health was suffering. I knew something had to change!

Then I met Shirley and the Slim4Life family, and I haven’t looked back.

Q: What made you choose Slim4Life

A: I have been overweight since being in the wheelchair, I have tried lots of diets, I had tried a VLCD before and had success but a move to Spain meant I had no support, something I needed. Slim4life was everything I needed, plus the important support!

Q: What Slim4Life plan did you follow?

A: Total Solution and maintenance plan

Q: What were your favourite

Slim4LIfe products?

A: Shakes, soups and bars, the porridge and sweet and sour meals. Let’s face it, all of them, such a great choice. No need to be hungry.

Q: What did you learn on the plan?

A: I am much more aware of what I eat and why in the past I made such bad food choices. I know choose to eat foods that are healthy for me, so no bad fats, low sugar and fish or white meat only.

Q: How did you plan fit into your lifestyle?

A: I didn’t find it too much of a problem at all. Shake for breakfast, soup or shake for lunch and a bar in the evening. On days out I could throw a bar in my bag and was ready to go! The plan is so flexible! I also talk to restaurant owners to ask them not to cook with fats for me.

Q: What kept you motivated?

A: I wanted my life back! Seeing the scales drop weekly and people starting to notice my weight loss kept me going! In addition, of course, having a better choice with size and style of clothesbuying what I wanted not just what I

could find to fit!

Q: What exercise did you do?

A: I’m lucky enough to have a great outdoor gym and a husband who is my personal trainer.

I have a vibro plate which I love and I swim most days as well as walking at every opportunity.

Q: When did you first notice a difference?

A: When the cold weather arrived, I went to put on my winter clothes. I got a shock, as they were all far too big for me.

Q: How has your life changed?

A: I’m happier and more confident - but most important “I’m me again!”

Q: What is your next goal?

A: I have maintained my weight loss but I need Shirley and the Slim4Life family to help motivate and support me, as I want to stay slim and trim.

Q: Would you recommend Slim4LIfe to a friend?

A: Totally, as the support and motivation from the Slim4LIfe family is amazing.

Motors

Mercedes-Benz takes on Tesla

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to take on the Tesla Model 3 with an all-new thirdgeneration CLA that offers the choice of in-house-developed electric and mildhybrid petrol drivetrains.

The new four-door coupé-style saloon is set to be previewed in concept car guise at the Munich motor show in September prior to a planned start to UK sales in early 2025.

As part of recent moves to simplify the naming of the German marque’s models, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA is expected to retain its traditional name in both pure-electric and combustionengined forms, rather than adopt the EQ sub-branding given to electric models today.

It is among four new ‘Entry Luxury’ models pencilled in for launch by Mercedes-Benz over the next three years as part of a comprehensive

restructuring of its compact car line-up under its ‘Electric First’ strategy

In a major shift in emphasis towards higher-positioned models, MercedesBenz says it will reduce the number of compact models from the seven it offers today to just four by the end of 2026. This move will result in the axing of the existing combustion-engined Mercedes-Benz A-Classhatchback, the standard-wheelbase A-Class saloon, the Chinese-built long-wheelbase A-Class saloon and the Mercedes-Benz B-Class MPV.

In the revamped compact car line-up, the new CLA saloon will be joined by successors to the CLA Shooting Brake, the GLA/EQA crossover and the GLB/ EQB SUV. All four models are set to be produced in both electric and petrol guises at Mercedes-Benz’s factories in Rastatt, Germany, and Kecskemét,

Hungary.

Detailing Mercedes-Benz’s compact car plans, CEO Ola Källenius said: “We will focus on the models that we believe are the most successful on a worldwide basis.” Underpinning the upcoming models is the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, as previewed by the wind-cheating Vision EQXXconcept car.

Unlike the MB-EA platform –which, Mercedes-Benz confirms, will exclusively support pure-electric models and is destined for production in 2025 as the basis for upcoming electric versions of the C-Class and GLC – the MMA platform is being engineered for both pure-electric and combustionengined models. Explaining the dual role of the new platform, Källenius said: “It is electric first. But that doesn’t mean it is electric only.”

Maintenance work begins on N-332 lighting in Torrevieja

The Councillor for Quality of Urban Services, Sandra Sanchez, reported that they, will carry. out maintenance work on the lighting of the road N-332 as it passes through our city, which correspond to an action framed within the Maintenance Service and

Conservation of Public Lighting in the municipality of Torrevieja, a contract carried out by the company SICE as a contractor of the City Council.

This action, adds Sandra Sanchez, will consist of repairing the lights out on the

N-332, specifically in the section that runs between La Veleta and La Mata from PK 53 +900 to 62 +400. During the action, they will replace the 250 W high-pressure sodium vapor lamps that are off.

To carry out the work, which is expected to last only three days, authorisation has been requested from the Alicante Roads Unit and the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), notifying the scope of the work in order to apply the correct signage on the

Imanyo Golf Society “St Patrick’s Shield” at Altorreal

This was our highest turn out since the society started in 2013 with 34 players, this was eighth year of the St Patricks Shield and we thank “Sir” Ronnie King for continuing his sponsorship on behalf of the Irish. The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with one overall winner. The destination to play was Altorreal where we were greeted by Antonio and his staff, as usual everything was ready and waiting for us, the course was in excellent condition and the weather was a hot and sunny 28 degrees, perfect for golf.

Lo Crispin Golf Society - Spring Cup

A good turn out of 35 members (including 3 playing for Handicap) and 1 guest ‘teed it up’ at El Plantio in the Society’s first ‘major’ of the year on 22nd March. The weather was good and the breeze was mostly moderate. The course however was a rather different story. The majority of the fairways were quite threadbare in places. The greens, or most of them were a little lumpy in part and of inconsistent speeds, also the tee boxes were a little scruffy. Nevertheless, most players seemed to enjoy the day, even if they were not so happy with their scores! We returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, as always, where we were served with a good selection of Tapas and the day’s prizes were distributed.

1st. Place - Steve KIng 33 pts off 18 and winner of the Spring Cup

2nd. Place - Ian Stuart 31 pts. off 15

3rd. Place - Barney Barningham 30 pts off 27 (on count back)

4th. Place - Janet Candlin 30 pts off 41

The Guest Prize, including those members playing for Handicap was won by Bob Dunn with 33 pts off 12

Hole 7 - Steve King

Hole 9 - Ian Stuart

Hole 14 - Bob Dunn

Hole 18 - Bob Dunn

The 2s Pot which included a double ‘roll over’ was won by Steve Carter, Ian Stuart and Richard Brady, who each collected 27 euros.

The Free Game Draw was won by Peter Marsh.

Finally, our next game, an Individual Stableford competition is at Saurines de la Torre Golf, Roldan, Murcia on 5th. April.

Steve Harrington (Handicap and Membership Secretary).

Abbey Angling

On Tuesday the 21st of March we fished the second round of the Spring series at the El Bosquet complex at Crevillente.23 Anglers turned out on a glorious Spring day and most of the match was fished in complete sunshine.

The match was fished in five sections and pegs a1 to 7 and 26 to 40 were used. Winner on the day making a welcome return from a trip to Vietnam was Nick Bastock. Drawn on the end peg 7 he fished the pole across on maggot for a great weight of 28kg.

In second place was our raider from over the Andalucian border Bob Robinson. Bob fished peg B1

and again caught across on bread or maggots on the pole for 19.60kg.

In third place was yours truly, Ian Brown from the fancied peg 1. After about three and a half hours I had caught 16.74kg of carp and mullet using maggots on the pole across. How did I know that you ask ? well for the last two and half hours I never caught a fish.

Th e other sections were very tight affairs and were won by John Waples 9.50kg , peg 26. Lenny Bolton 13.32kg, peg 32 and Tony Felstead on peg 37 with 8.08kg.

Rods N Reels.

The following day the club should have been fishing the Rio Segura at

Murcia. Due to numerous people being unable to attend this venue the match was switched once again to El Bosquet. It was a very similar day to the day before and great things were expected. For whatever reason the venue did not fish quite as good which is unusual after a day were a load of bait is put in.

Winner on the day was one of our Belgium anglers who I shall refer to as Max.Drawn on peg 4 he caught well on the pole across for most of the day and also caught on what the Belgiums refer to as a wincklepicker, a bomb to uk anglers. He weighed 17.38kg of mainly carp.

In second place was Richard Smith

from peg B1. Fishing the pole with maggot or pellet he caught carp with the odd mullet for 15.38kg.

Taking third place was yet another Belgium this time refered to as JP.We only refer to the belgiums as nicknames etc mainly because we cant pronounce or spell the correct ones.Drawn on peg 28, JP caught carp on the pole with maggots for 13,78kg.

The other section winner was Steve Higgins with 10.34kg from peg 17.

Next week we are holding a two day festival at the venue and pegs a1 to 7, 17 to 25 and 26 to 40 have all been

reserved. Plaesure anglers can still fish the favoured pegs 8 to 16.
