Body found at rubbish dump could be from Torrevieja
could have come from torrevieja. investigations are now underway to find out exactly where that particular container of waste originated and also to identify the remains, which could correspond to a middle-aged man, although this has not been confirmed either.
at the moment, more details about what happened are unknown, such as who the deceased person could be and how the body arrived at the Jijona landfill without being spotted earlier. the Civil Guard is investigating the facts, but for now no information has been released, beyond confirming that a corpse has been found in the facility. it may be sometime before officers have more information to release. initial speculation reported in regional media points to the transfer containing the remains coming from torrevieja, but no official confirmation has been given.
an autopsy performed on the corpse at the alicante institute of legal Medicine, will clarify the possible cause of death and the timescales officers are looking at, with regard to cause of death and discovery of the body.
the Jijona facility is the point where the waste from a large part of the province of alicante is finally disposed of, including that from across the Vega Baja. two years ago, the head of a woman who lived in torrevieja and who was the victim of domestic violence was being searched for in this same landfill. the deceased, a Finnish national who was 68 years old at the time of her death, was allegedly murdered and dismembered by partner, a 70-year-old man from the same country.

he added that “these documents, before this important improvement in the service, were delivered seven days after the request because the technical resources were not available to deliver them at the time. Iceland in Torrevieja closes its doors
‘iceland’ in torrevieja is to close its doors for good on Friday 15th april. the store, which officially trades as overseas Supermarkets, has been affectionately known as iceland since it opened 15 years ago in 2008.
the store is an expat favourite, stocking much-loved and missed British brands and products, including those from iceland and Waitrose.
torrevieja was the first ‘iceland’ in the area and at the time of opening was one of the biggest with nearly 100 freezer cabinets stocked to the brim. Shoppers would travel from the surrounding areas to buy British back bacon, mature cheddar, english tea bags as well as frozen foods.
however, over the years the chain has grown. it now has several stores
across the area, including la Marina, orihuela Costa, San Javier and Campoverde. there is also the Food Co store in Quesada, know locally as ‘tesco’, operated by the same company.
it is believed these other local stores will continue to trade as normal and there are no plans to make further closures in the foreseeable future.

Spanish PM urges Chinese counterpart into Ukraine talks
Spanish prime Minister pedro Sanchez has encouraged Chinese president Xi Jinping to talk to the Ukrainian leadership and learn first-hand about Kyiv’s peace formula to help bring an end to russia’s invasion.
Sanchez told a news conference in Beijing he had informed Xi that Spain supported the proposals made by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy. these include a demand to restore Ukraine’s territory to the status quo before russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
“i believe it’s a plan that lays the foundations for a durable peace in Ukraine and is perfectly aligned with the United nations charter and its principles, which have been violated by russian president Vladimir putin with his invasion,” he said.
“i transmitted our concern over the illegal invasion of Ukraine,” Sanchez said, adding that he encouraged Xi to talk to president Zelenskiy in order to get to know first-hand Kyiv’s peace plan.
last month, Beijing put forward its own 12-point position paper on a political solution to the war in Ukraine, which included a comprehensive ceasefire in the conflict.however, the paper also raised eyebrows among some eU officials in China for not stating that the aggressor in the conflict was russia.
Sanchez declined to say what Xi had
said about the issue.
russia has said Ukraine must accept its loss of Crimea and four other regions in the south and east of the country.
according to a readout of the meeting from Chinese state broadcaster CC t V, Xi called for an end to a “Cold War mentality” and to the pressure of “extreme” sanctions, though he did not name russia.
“We hope that all parties concerned will build a balanced, effective and sustainable european security architecture through dialogue and consultation,” CC t V quoted Xi as saying.
Spain, a nato member who’s foreign and security policy is closely aligned with that of the United States, is a staunch ally of Ukraine. in July it assumes the rotating presidency of the european Union’s Council, which groups the bloc’s 27 national governments.
Sanchez said he agreed with eU Commission president Ursula von der leyen’s view that relations between the eU and China were “complex” and he stressed the need for reciprocity and a level playing field between them.
the absence of any official engagement between Xi and Zelensky since the war broke out has worried eU leaders, not least because it contrasts with signs of close personal ties between Xi and putin, such as when
Wildfires under control
both leaders greeted one another as “dear friend” in their most recent meeting.
Von der leyen, who in a recent speech said China was becoming “more repressive at home and more assertive abroad”, is scheduled to visit Beijing herself next week alongside French president emmanuel Macron.
Sanchez urged China to seek a more balanced economic relationship with the eU and greater transparency. on bilateral commerce, Sanchez announced agreements that would allow for the export of Spanish almonds and persimmons to China.
in 2022, Spain’s imports from China amounted to 49.6 billion euros ($53.9 billion), while exports to China reached about 8 billion euros, Spanish economy ministry data showed.
according to CCt V, Chinese premier li Qiang said Beijing wanted to expand trade and investment with Spain, strengthen industrial docking and increase cooperation on new energy and advanced materials as well as on Xi’s Belt and road initiative.
Spain, one of the world’s most visited countries, also hopes to attract more Chinese tourists after the lifting of CoVid restrictions there.
Madrid aims to “facilitate the issuing of visas” to Chinese visitors, Sanchez said, adding that Spain would host a bilateral tourism forum in the summer.
numerous wildfires that have ravaged northern Spain in recent days have subsided, largely thanks to improved weather conditions, authorities said at the weekend.
in the asturias region, where a blaze has ravaged 11,000 hectares (27,181 acres), 71 fires were still underway on Saturday, compared to over 90 the previous day.But almost all of them are “under control and stabilised”, oscar rodriguez, head of the region’s emergency services, told journalists.Fire-fighters have been helped by light rain and favourable winds.
adrian Barbon, the regional president of asturias, blamed arson for “clearly a coordinated action by environmental terrorists”, which could have caused “hundreds of deaths”.
in neighbouring Cantabria, two out of 35 fires recorded just before the weekend are still burning, but both are “under control”, the regional government said on twitter.
in the eastern region of Valencia, nearly 4,700 hectares (11,614 acres) have been consumed by the flames.
Spain is experiencing long-term drought after three years of belowaverage rainfall.in 2022, a particularly bad year for wildfires in europe, Spain was the continent’s worst-hit country. nearly 500 blazes destroyed more than 300,000 hectares, according to the european Forest Fire information System.Climate change amplifies droughts that create ideal conditions for wildfires to spread out of control and inflict unprecedented material and environmental damage.

Inflation falls in March
March inflation information for Spain has been published, and it was a surprisingly good month. the annual consumer price index plummeted to 3.3 percent, down from 6 percent in February.
this large decline has been put down to a so-called ‘step effect’. it does not mean that prices have eased to any great extent since last month. rather, when compared to this March, last year in March, when war broke out in Ukraine and energy and raw material prices soared, prices then soared virtually overnight. in March last year, annual inflation rose to 7.6 percent and from that point onwards continued upwards until reaching a peak in July of 10.8
percent.
the government’s national statistics institute (ine) attributes the lower growth in prices to the recent fall in the cost of electricity and fuel, compared with the rise in the same month in 2022.
the government minister for economic affairs nadia Calviño had already predicted that inflation would slow in March. Sources in her Ministry said the “sustained” fall in the price of electricity from measures adopted by the government to contain prices have been “key” factors for “Spanish inflation being among the lowest in europe”.
however, underlying annual inflation - which does not take into account fresh produce
or energy - remains almost identical to February, down only one tenth of a percentage point at 7.5 percent, one of the highest rates ever.
the ine statistics did not reveal which products have become more expensive, information that will be available in two weeks. this will show whether the iVa sales tax decrease on certain essential foods is having its effect in the third month since it came into effect. the government is still backing its lower iVa policy despite some studies showing it is having little effect. the latest data available for the month of February points to a 16.6 percent annualrise in food prices, with fruit and vegetables topping the list.

Competition watchdog opens Google probe in Spain
Sports stars open restaurant in Valencia
two of Spain’s top sportsmen have joined forces to open a restaurant in Valencia city –part of a small chain which has eateries in Beverly hills and doha. portuguese football team captain and former real Madrid striker Cristiano ronaldo, and Spanish international tennis legend rafael nadal, are behind the tatel restaurant due to open in Spain’s third-largest city this summer.
Spain’s competition watchdog has launched an investigation into Google for alleged anticompetitive practices affecting news agencies and press publications. the probe seeks to determine if Google and its parent company alphabet abused their “dominant position” in the Spanish market, competition watchdog CnMC said in a recent statement.
“Specifically, these practices consist of the possible imposition of unfair commercial conditions on publishers of press publications and news agencies established in Spain for the exploitation of their copyrighted content,” it added.
the watchdog said it opened
its probe following a complaint from the Spanish reproduction rights Centre (Cedro), a nonprofit association of authors and publishers of books, magazines and newspapers.it did not specify the period covered by the investigation, nor what sanctions Google could face if it is proven that Google had abused its dominant position in Spain.
the european Union and several member states have in recent years taken steps to stop US tech giants like Google from stifling competition, avoiding tax and profit from news content without paying. the digital giants are regularly criticised for dominating markets by
elbowing out rivals.
in July 2022, the european parliament adopted the digital Markets act to curb the market dominance of Big tech, with violators facing fines of up to 10 percent of their annual global sales.
Brussels has slapped over eight billion euros in fines on Google alone for abusing its dominant market position. the eU has also created a form of copyright called “neighbouring rights” that allows print media to demand compensation for use of their content. after initial resistance, Google and Facebook agreed to pay French media, including aFp, for articles shown in web searches.
it belongs to the Mabel hospitality Group, and joins others already open in California, Qatar, Madrid and ibiza. tatel restaurants are
included in the USa today ranking of the 25 best eateries ‘worth the detour’ and also this year’s tripadvisor travellers’ Choice awards. national and international ‘fusion’ cuisine and live music can be found in the 600-squaremetre premises in the old Valencia stock market building at number 19 of the C/ pascual iGenís. the décor, created by Mabel design, takes its inspiration from the clandestine locales of 1920s’ USa during the
prohibition, when alcohol was banned nationwide. tatel is a restaurant chain created by nadal, ronaldo, and business partners Manuel Campos Guallar and abel Matutes prats – the hospitality arm of the investment company Mabel Capital.
Spain to send tanks to Ukraine
Spain will send six promised leopard battle tanks to Ukraine after easter to help the wartorn country fend off russia’s invasion, defence Minister Margarita robles said.
Madrid announced in February it would send the German-made 2a4 leopards to Ukraine after they underwent repairs.the tanks have not been used in years and were in storage at a military base in the north-eastern city of Zaragoza.
robles said the Spanish army
was testing the six tanks before delivering them to Ukraine after easter Sunday on 9th april.
Spanish prime Minister pedro Sanchez announced during a visit to Kyiv on 23rd February that Spain could send an additional four leopard tanks to Ukraine.
“these four supplementary tanks need to be repaired,” robles said, without indicating when they could be delivered to Ukraine.
earlier this month 55
Ukrainian soldiers wrapped up a four-week training course in Spain on how to operate the leopard tanks Western allies have promised Ukraine. Britain and Germany said Monday they have delivered Western heavy tanks to Ukraine, providing a key infusion of armoured firepower. the tanks - long an item on Ukraine’s military equipment wish list - have arrived in time for an expected spring offensive by Ukraine’s forces.

Why you should start investing and the three golden rules to make it work
Want to beat the pathetic interest paid out on many high street accounts - and turbo-charge your money for the future?
then it’s time to dip your toe into the stock market.
You’ll be swapping the relative safety of an ordinary savings account for the stock markets — and to the novice investor this can seem fraught with danger. But it doesn’t need to be.
Don’t forget to spread your risk
Generally, investing means using your money to back something which you think will give you a profit.
Most simply, this means putting your money into shares issued by companies that are listed on the stock market.
But with all investing there is a risk. it is for this reason that buying shares in just one company can be risky. that’s why many investors tend to hold shares with investment funds. these put your cash into a basket of companies, thereby spreading the chances of share price rises and falls.
What is your prime target?
Before you start, you need to ask yourself why you want to invest. is it a rainy day reserve? or are you hoping to build up a pot of money to supplement your income in retirement?
the answers will help you figure out where to put your money - not least because you’ll know how long it will be invested for. as a rule of
thumb, the longer you can keep your money tied up, the more risk you can afford to take. if you suffer steep or sudden price falls, being invested for longer means you give your cash a greater chance of recovery.
Don’t be over-zealous take it steady to start with and don’t be tempted to tinker all the time. if you’re overzealous, this could lead to you panic-selling your funds if they’re not doing that well in the shortterm.
if this all seems a little daunting to deal with on your own, then help is at hand. if you would like to have a chat about how to make your money work harder, then give me a call on 965 704 338 or send an email to: Contact@seagateWealth.es

GBP / EUR UPDATE
GBP
the Boe governor andrew Bailey has been highly visible this week, reiterating the need for the Boe to keep focus on fighting inflation in spite of the bank wobbles, which have thankfully missed the green and pleasant shores of the UK (so far). at the same time, Bailey also highlighted the ongoing strength and robustness of UK banks, and that the Boe will not be unduly worried about the health of the global financial system.Strong words, and similar to Christine lagarde’s comments last week, they may have played a part in calming a nervous market.
aside from Bailey’s regular updates, it has been a fairly slow week for key UK data, although the latest quarterly UK growth figures, which were released a little earlier this morning, were probably the pick of the bunch. having previously been expected to slip into a recession, growth has surprised to the upside, with a 0.1% increase (QoQ) and 0.6% (YoY). in both cases, the data exceeded estimates.
as for the pound, well that powerful combination of a broadly weaker dollar, and the market perception of underlying strength amongst UK banks, has helped to ensure that GBp/USd has risen all of the way to just over 1.2400 through this week. Whilst the 1.25% gain might not sound like much of a move, it has helped to take us all the way back to levels not witnessed since the early part of the year. however, before sterling bulls get too carried away, 1.2500 remains the big topside level to watch.as for next week, the latest pMi’s, house prices and the easter holiday are likely to dominate proceedings.
EURO
there were some significant differences between the latest Spanish and German inflation
reports, which were both released yesterday (thursday). Spanish inflation really caught the eye, with harmonized yearly inflation almost halving, yes halving, over the past month from 6% to 3.1%. Markets had been expecting figure around the 4% mark, given the big drop in energy prices. it was not such good news in Germany, with harmonized Cpi dropping from 9.3% to 7.8%. Granted, the figure reflected a sharp drop, but markets were hoping for a dip to around 7.5%, and probably even more given the earlier Spanish report.
the problem with inflation is that, aside from energy, most other key components remain annoyingly sticky. that could be witnessed by the moves in the bond market after the data was released, with yields rising across key German bonds, especially at the front end, as the key twoyear Bond saw its yield rising 0.15% to 2.78%. the two-year bond is especially sensitive to perceived interest rate changes, with markets clearly gearing up for further eCB hikes as they maintain their hawkish outlook, in spite of the recent banking wobbles. the eCB’s chief economist philip lane suggested this weekthat more rates hikes would be needed, assuming bank woes are contained, of course.
the single currency has rebounded well after initially being sold off after the SVB worries intensified a couple of weeks ago (already). indeed, eUr/USd moved back over 1.0900 yesterday (thursday), and could well benefit from further inflows, assuming that the status quo remains in place for key bank stocks. GBp/eUr remains trapped between 1.1300 – 1.1400, given the strong performance of the pound of late. next week’s shortened schedule sees key data shoehorned into four days, with the latest pMi readings probably the pick of the pack.

Parents still need to point out wrongs to their children, even if they are grown up. She is still living with you under your roof, and your rules must be adhered to. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with ‘shopping around’, so to speak, before you find the right
person; your daughter must bear in mind that she may be inflicting hurt on people if she is not being respectful and considering feelings along the way. Ask her, how would she like to be treated that way? Also, let her know that you won’t stand being dragged into her relationships any more.
Our daughter is a nightmare - she can’t seem to stick with one boy for long, before she is moving on to another. The trouble is that she brings them home, and my husband and I become fond of them, only for her to tell us after a month or so, that she has finished with them. She has been doing this for two years while she has been at College, and I don’t see her attitude changing. Her behaviour is quite callous at time, and she will leave them with us for hours on end while she sees her girlfriends. Sometimes she hasn’t even broken up with anyone before starting with another relationship, and we have to deal with upset former boyfriends calling at the house, when she has got another beau upstairs. My husband thinks she will grow out of it, but I think we should speak to her about her mercenary behaviour otherwise it will continue won’t it? As she is still quite young, she may learn a lesson one day if she has the same done to her, but it won’t do any harm in having a word with her in the meantime. Torreveieja lifeguard service hits the beach for Summer
this contract includes a very demanded aspect by the users of the beaches and promenades of our city, which is the opening all year round of the 9 existing toilets on our beaches, which will also have a daily cleaning and maintenance service.
the councillor secretary of the local Government Board, Federico alarcón, together with the councillor for Beaches, antonio Vidal, has reported this morning that has been approved in JGl the contracting of the integral Maintenance Service of Beaches, excluding plant elements, for an amount of 531,132.61 euros per year, being the contract for a period of four years, which represents a total investment of 2,124,530.44
euros. the contract has the possibility of being extended for a further year.
antonio Vidal has reported that this new contract is very necessary and in demand to keep our beaches in perfect condition throughout the year, and thus be able to offer a higher quality service to the thousands of bathers who enjoy our beaches.
Vidal pointed out that the maintenance contract includes the maintenance and cleaning of street furniture (benches, litter bins, signs, billboards, railings, posts, masts, walkways, bike racks, etc.). it also includes elements that require painting or varnishing such as fences, walls, metal and wooden elements in
general, elements of civil works for accessing or delimiting the beaches such as walls, ramps, etc., and lifeguard posts and toilets. there will also be an oncall service for emergencies and the replacement of equipment in the event of serious damage or danger, as well as the transport of heavy or large materials at the request of the municipal technicians.
Finally, antonio Vidal stressed that this contract includes an aspect that is highly demanded by users of the beaches and promenades, which is the year-round opening of the 9 existing toilets on our beaches, which will also have a daily cleaning and maintenance service.
the councilman of Beaches of the City of torrevieja, antonio Vidal, has reported that as of Saturday, april 1, begins the new Surveillance Service, lifeguard and lifeguard on the beaches, which was awarded to the company eUlen for an amount of 736,920 euros per year (Vat included), being the contract for four years plus one extension, representing a total investment of 3,684,600 euros. antonio Vidal, stressed that this new contract includes a number of new features that result in a vast improvement in the service and, therefore, for the safety of bathers. “ this government team aims to offer residents, visitors and tourists not only the best image of our beaches, but also the peace of mind that they are on safe beaches with a lifeguard service to match”, were the words of the councillor. in this way, the assisted bathing service has been extended as an improvement to the contract, from 15 June to 15 September, in addition to the creation of a new bathing area on the beach of la Mata. likewise, the service hours of the lifeguard teams have been increased, starting at 10:00 hours and ending at 20:00 hours in high season. this means two more hours of
service compared to the previo the service will continue to be provided during the easter Week season, which will last 10 days, which started on Saturday 1st april, and will end on Monday 10th april, also offering service at Cabo Cervera and Cala piteras. another novelty will be that, in the summer season, the service will start on the 1st of June (15 days earlier than usual), as well as having an extra 10 days to improve the contract on special dates such as: 1st and 2nd of May, 16th and 17th of September, 23rd and
24th of September, and from 11th to 14th of october.
With regard to the renewal of the lifeguard posts, antonio Vidal explained that there will be a total of 8 lifeguard posts and 5 advanced watchtowers. in high season will be a total of 50 people who provide this service of surveillance, rescue and lifeguarding on the beaches of torrevieja, of which 39 are lifeguards and 11 common: 6 motorbike skippers, 2 emergency health technicians, a driver assisted bathing and an administrative.

Fashion Show Success
Last Friday 24th March saw the first ‘fashion show’ at the Marina Bar calle de las Rosas for the charity “Help Vega Baja”. The show’s organizers David and Lorraine Whitney had spent many hours in the “Help Vega Baja! charity shop in San Miguel sorting out a fine selection of clothes for the models to wear and also found a selection of tops, dresses, shoes, bags etc to go on sale after the models had strutted their stuff.
Together with a raffle of 41 donated prizes and other stalls the afternoon turned out to be a resounding success raising 1,062 Euros for this very worthwhile charity. For most of the models it was their first time but they did an incredible job modelling some beautiful outfits. Thanks to everybody who kindly donated to the day and special thanks to Mary Terry Flynn who donated an afternoon tea for two at the Marina Bar, to Jo Neville who baked a home made fruit cake with brandy and to Vicky of The Royal Oak, Orihuela Costa who kindly donated bottles of wine. Special thanks to Donnie MacKay
for taking photos, Pid for setting up the sound system and everybody who helped on the day particularly Dave, Rita and the team at the Marina Bar for their hard work in the kitchen and bar. The turn out of people was, as usual, amazing and their generosity supporting the charity was very much appreciated.
Help Vega Baja President Michele Masson said a few word to describe the aims of the charity prior to the show and was there to answer any questions.
David and Lorraine sincerely hope that everybody enjoyed the “Fashion Show” as it was their first since Covid struck the world. Onwards and upwards they are now busy thinking of a their next fund raiser and thank everybody for their continued support.
A final word from them as they would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers in the Vega Baja Charity shop who made them feel so welcome and played their part in the show’s success.

Torrevieja international youth contest of Habaneras
The Councillor for Culture and Vice President of the International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja, Antonio Quesada, has presented the 28th International Youth Contest of Habaneras, that “small” Contest that in 1995 saw the light as a complement to the International Contest, and has become an international reference for youth and children’s choirs, both within and outside our borders.
The Certamen Juvenil de Habaneras enjoys a magnificent choral health and is currently the showcase where new groups become known, serving also as a “thermometer” to evaluate the choral quality of the participating groups, having to assume a competition phase that has nothing to do with other noncompetitive concerts that the choirs have carried out.
For this new 2023 edition, the Technical Commission of the Patronato Municipal de Habaneras has decided that four out of a total of ten groups will be selected, highlighting for the
first time, after the pandemic, the attendance of an international choir, specifically from Macedonia.
Among the national choirs, choirs from Asturias, Madrid and Andalusia will perform. There will be around 250 singers in our city on 22 April, in addition to the choir members of the “Coro Sinfonía” of the Municipal Choir School, directed by Selena Cancino Escobar and the performance of the “Menudos Cantantes” Choir, the youngest members of the Madrid Youth Choir, directed by Juan Pablo de Juan Martín.
CONCERT PROGRAMME
Next Saturday, 22 April, in the Municipal Theatre, at 18:00 hours, we will have the opportunity to enjoy choral singing and the habanera with the following programme:
Choirs in Competition Phase
- CORO ARSIS DE LA ESCUELA DE MÚSICA DIVERTIMENTO, Oviedo (Asturias).
- SS. CYRIL AND METHODIUS CHOIR, Véles (Macedonia).
- CORO ENTREOLIVOS, Dos Hermanas (Seville).
- CORO ENCANTO, Griñón (Madrid).
After the competition phase, the Coro Sinfonía de la Escuela Coral Municipal, directed by Selena Cancino Escobar, and the Coro Menudos Cantores de Madrid, directed by Juan Pablo de Juan Martín, will perform, while the jury deliberates, with a repertoire mostly of habaneras. After the performances of both, the Awards Ceremony and Closing Ceremony of the 28th edition will take place.
International Youth Habanera Contest.
JURY
The Patronato Municipal de Habaneras, together with the Technical Commission of the Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonía has appointed three great names of the current choral panorama as jurors for this edition, in accordance with the qualitative and artistic demands that the Youth Contest has acquired. On this occasion, Juan Pablo de Juan, Arkaitz Mendoza and Bernardette Khune have been chosen to designate the judges of this International Youth Competition 2023.
The work to be performed will be HBNR2 - Lyrics by Ana Galindo and Music by Jordi López.
The prizes will be as follows:
-First Prize: 3.000 € and trophy.
-Second Prize: 2.000 € and a trophy.
-Third Prize: 1.000 € and trophy.
Tickets for the concerts are already on sale at the price of 5 euros. They can be purchased in person at the box office of the Municipal Theatre, located in Plaza Miguel Hernández, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 13:00 hours and from 17:30 to 20:30 hours, and can also be purchased on the day of the event between 17:30 and 18:00 hours, (preferably with card), also “on line” on
the website of the Patronato Municipal de Habaneras, (www.habaneras.org) and by mail hola@culturatorrevieja. com. For reservations, telephone: 673 931 618 at the box office.

Retroperitoneal Sarcoma: A silent cancer that has treatment at Quirón salud Torrevieja
Dr. Paula Muñoz Muñoz, assistant of the General Surgery, digestive and
Oncological
Surgery Service of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, explains what this disease consists of, what symptoms it presents and the solutions that exist.
What is retroperitoneal sarcoma?
Two groups are divided: bone sarcomas and soft tissue sarcomas. The former originates in the bones; the second, in tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, fatty tissue and blood vessels.
Peritoneal sarcomas are considered soft tissue sarcomas
Specifically, they are a heterogeneous group of tumours whose common characteristics are that they develop from mesenchymal cells (those that derive the supporting tissues of the body, such as fat, muscle or cartilage) and that are located in there troperitoneum (virtual space delimited in front by the abdominal organs and behind by the spine, and which houses vital structures such as the aorta and kidneys).
Do you have symptoms?
The symptoms of retroperitoneal sarcomas are very non specific, since their location develops indolently, until they are usually diagnosed as giant abdominal masses.
The main symptomis the increase in abdominal circumference, although they can also produce specific symptoms such as abdominal or lumbar pain, oedema of the legs, venous thrombosis oreven fever and weight loss unexplained by other causes.
What tests are performed to diagnose this tumour?
The test of choice for the diagnosis of retroperitoneal sarcoma is computed tomography (CT) with intravenous contrast.
The CT will be thoraco-abdominal, with the aim of evaluating in the same study that there are no metastases in lung and liver, the most frequent locations. This study can sometimes be supplemented with an MRI.
In retroperitoneal sarcoma, and as a rule in all sarcomas of any location, it is essential to perform a biopsy.
The information obtained in the biopsy will allow us to plan the most appropriate type of surgical intervention
Prognosis of peritoneal sarcoma
Retroperitoneal sarcoma is an aggressive and complex disease because it grows around vital structures and is diagnosed in advanced stages.
The prognosis will also be influenced by the type of sarcoma.
One of the factors that most influence
the survival of these patients is that the first surgery is performed properly.
What is the key to treatment in sarcoma?
Surgery is the only curative treatment in retroperitoneal sarcoma, and it is essential to achieve a favourable evolution, that the surgery is adequate and manages to remove the entire tumour with a margin of healthy tissue. That is why it is recommended that these patients be treated in centres with great specialisation in cancer surgery. The goal of surgery is to remove the entire tumour, without rupturing it, and with a margin of safety.
It is an aggressive surgery that can affect the quality of life of patients. For this reason, the surgeon who performs this intervention must know to have a wide knowledge in oncological surgery and make a preoperative plan personalized to the type of tumour and the type of patient.
What role does intraoperative radiation therapy play in the treatment of sarcoma?
Intraoperative radiation therapy is an intensive radiation therapy treatment given during surgery that allows radiation to be directed to a specific area of the body. It is performed with the patient anesthetized, once the
tumour is removed.
The main advantage of this treatment is that it allows a high dose of radiation to be administered to the bed in which the tumour was located, avoiding unnecessary radiation from the uninvolved organs.
In Spain, less than 10 hospitals have this technology. Our hospital was the first to have a device in the operating room, and one of the first Spanish hospitals that began treatment with IORT, and we currently have more than 20 years of experience in this type of
radiotherapy.
This procedure allows to eliminate posible microscopic tumour residues in order to avoid there lapse of thetumour. Referents in oncological surgery
The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, and its Surgery service is a benchmark in our region in the treatment of cancer. The General Surgery Service is integrated into a Multidisciplinary Oncology Unit, which guarantees an optimal and personalized approach to cáncer patients.

Redeveloment work starts on La Torreta III project
On Friday 31 March the Local Government Board approved the award of the contract for the drafting of the redevelopment project of Torreta III - Punta de la Víbora, based on the Framework Agreement, for an amount of 525,870 euros (VAT included). The execution period for the drafting of this project is 4 months.
This is an urban development that was created in the early 80s and is currently in a poor state of conservation, so from the City Council of Torrevieja is intended to complete the development of the sector and replace the degraded infrastructure that need to be replaced and adapted to the conditions established by current legislation, with the aim of solving the problems that are generated in the area,
improving the quality of life and services for residents.
The redevelopment project has three lines of action:
Formation of new roads. The plan is to create 2,095 linear metres of new road, including the corresponding service infrastructure such as drinking water, sewerage, street lighting, furniture and landscaping.
Study of the state of the current roads. Carrying out a study of the current state of the existing infrastructures, their deficiencies and a proposal with the improvements proposed according to current needs and current regulations on the subject. Review and completion of the infrastructures for the distribution of drinking water, sanitation, electricity distribution, lighting and street
furniture. All this in a total of 49,059 m2 of road surface in which all the works to be carried out will be defined in order to condition these roads from the point of view of urban integration, removal of architectural barriers and creation of sufficient parking and other services.
Equipment to be executed. It is proposed to develop the green area over an area of 75,000 m2, respecting at all times the natural affection it may have with the Lagunas de Torrevieja, in accordance with the current regional legislation established. The result is a proposal for a green area that provides an attractive and integrating solution in the area, as well as establishing a connection with the Torrevieja greenway (the old railway line).

Hidden extras on cars you may not be aware of!
Ford GT headlights
The GT was first revealed in 2003, on the 100th anniversary of Ford Motor Company. To mark the occasion, the V8 supercar’s nearside headlight was designed to read ‘100’. We wonder how many people noticed.
Mini Openometer
This ‘Openometer’ gauge in the Mini
Convertible shows how much time you’ve spent driving with the roof open.
Volkswagen’s golf ball gearknob
Volkswagen had a habit of naming its cars after winds, so it’s likely that ‘Golf’ refers to the Gulf Stream, rather than a game with 18 holes and tasselled shoes. Nonetheless, many versions of the Golf GTI have played upon this association
with a dimpled ‘golf ball’ gearknob.
Skoda’s Superb umbrella
The Skoda Superb does a mighty fine impression of a luxury car, right down to the umbrella hidden away in the rear door. Indeed, the Superb goes one better by offering two brollies.
The Tesla Model S and Elon Musk’s tribute to Spinal Tap
In a brilliant nod to This Is Spinal Tap, the volume controls in the Tesla Model S go ‘up to 11.’ Hat-tip to Elon Musk…
Not to mention the Tesla Model S and its underwater abilities
Hidden away in the menus of the Tesla Model S is a Lotus Esprit submarine setting. Pressing the Tesla logo for a set period of time and entering ‘007’ as the code will transform the display to that of James Bond’s Esprit.
Honda and its Magic Seats
The flip-up bases on the seats create a floor-to-roof load space, so you can easily load tall objects. They’re perfect for carrying pot plants.
Vauxhall Corsa bike rack
By far the most interesting thing about the old Vauxhall Corsa was its FlexFix integrated bike rack. This popped out from behind the rear number plate when you lifted a handle in the boot. The extra rear lights were provided, too.
Pandamonium
The Fiat Panda is known for its rounded-off ‘squircles’, which appear everywhere on the car. But a lesserknown feature of the car is the ‘Panda’ inscription on the door cards. Look closely and you’ll spot thousands of
Ford Mustang and a projected pony
The Ford Mustang’s pony projection lights that display the iconic Mustang logo on the road beneath the car. It’s like the Bat-Signal, only with a horse.
Toyota FT-1 and the F1-style rear light
The Toyota FT-1 concept was a pretty cool car. The front-engined, rearwheel-drive machine felt like a nod to the company’s performance heritage, echoing the likes of the Supra and Celica. The concept even featured an F1-style flashing rain light at the back.
Aston Martin’s delightful nod to its logo
Now this is also very clever. The rear lights on the Aston Martin Vanquish are designed in such a way that if you put them together they’d create the shape of the Aston Martin logo.
The Tesla Model S keyfob
Tesla uses the Porsche trick of creating a keyfob out of the shape of the car.
‘Simply Clever’ ice scraper in the Skoda Octavia
There’s never an ice scraper when you need one. Which is why Skoda decided to put one on the inside of the Octavia’s fuel filler cap.
The Z on the side of the BMW Z4
Like the arrow inside the FedEx logo, once you’ve seen the Z on the side of the BMW Z4, you can never unsee it.
Vauxhall and Opel shark
Back in 2004, Opel designer Dietmar Finger was at home working on a sketch for the new Corsa. For stability reasons,
the outer panel of the glovebox required ribs integrated in the plastic surface. His son said: “Papa, why don’t you just draw a shark?” So he did. The glovebox shark later spread to many Vauxhall and Opel cars.
Volvo XC90 spider web
The interior of the Volvo XC90 is a work of brilliance. It’s sophisticated and beautifully finished. Which makes the spider on the inside of one of the storage bins all the more surprising.
Lexus IS 300h interior light
Walking up to your keyless-go Lexus IS in complete darkness? Don’t worry – the car has your back. It senses your presence and the interior lights automatically glow as you get near, before you even touch either the key or the door handles.
Jaguar E-Pace cub
Take a look at the corner of the windscreen on the Jaguar E-Pace and you’ll find two big cats climbing a hill. The cub is there to represent the ‘baby’ crossover.
Renault Modus and its boot chute if somebody parks too close for you to open the tailgate, the Renault Modus MPV has a neat solution. The boot chute means you can access the luggage area without lifting the whole lid.
The Nissan curry hook
It’s so simple, but many of the best ideas are. Nissan’s curry hook – introduced on the Almera in 1996 – provided somewhere to hang your takeaway food bags. It meant less chance of lamb madras and broken poppadoms on your carpets.

Torrevieja Urology Department consolidates staff
The urology service of the University Hospital of Torrevieja will have, from May, seven specialists attached to the service. Recently, the centre incorporated Araceli Amorós as the new head of service.
Amorós joins the five specialists already at the centre and the arrival of a resident doctor in May.
Dr. Amorós, who has extensive clinical and management experience, is the only woman in the Comunitat to take on the position of head of service for this speciality.
“For me it is a new professional challenge; together with my colleagues we are working to modernise and optimise the work circuits, improving day by day the quality of care we provide to our patients without forgetting the incorporation of new technology,” says Araceli Amorós, head of the urology service at the Torrevieja health
department. In addition, she adds, “I am committed to our patients and professionals, thanks to a solid project, which makes us an attractive centre for attracting and retaining talent”.
The Urology Service has a team that aims to provide quality patient care, based on humane treatment and supported by efficiency and new technologies.
Over the years, the urology service has been incorporating, promoting and developing innovative techniques that have reduced the percentage of complications with a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
A gentle start a week late
The first day of the SAMM Spring Race Season had to be canceled due to the very high wind forecast. But March 26th dawned bright and clear with a gentle South West breeze of 5 knots so it was a go. Six boats came to the start line at 11.15 for the first race, two Sailfish from the Balaton Group, two Gambas and a Laser 2000 from the Shoestring Group and John Downs’ Laser Radial. The dinghies all got away well but it was a bad start for both Sailfish, Vision got stuck in irons and Sirocco went round the wrong buoy so both were at the back of the fleet. Then it was a gentle procession around the course.
At 11.40 the wind dropped to 3 knots and backed to the south which caught out a few boats and enabled Vision, who’s crew read the wind shift well, to close the gap on the leaders. Just as the “about to finish” signal was made the wind increased to 4.5 knots and backed further to the east, enabling Vision to cross the finish line 10 seconds ahead of
the Gamba Uno.
The second race started prompt at 12.29, again in a 5 knot breeze which held throughout the race. All boats got away smartly, with John Down first over, and then the fleet started to spread out a little between the first and second mark as the faster boats pulled away from the slower.
There was little excitement but John had to do a 360 penalty at the second mark allowing the Gamba Cuatro to take the lead, and there was some close racing between John and the Laser 2000 throughout the race.
These are average lap races with boats handicapped in line with the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick system. When the results were calculated they showed that the racing was very close. The average lap times were:-
First race 1st Vision 759 seconds, 2nd Laser Radial 761 seconds, third Gamba Cuatro 767 seconds.
Second race 1st Vision 441 seconds, 2nd Gamba Cuatro 509 seconds, third
Laser 2000 511 seconds. For full information on SAMM go to www.sailingmarmenor.com
El Bosquet Spring Festival
March 2023
On Tuesday the 28th of March we held the first day of the annual Spring Festival at the complex near Crevillente. Twenty three anglers took partand the match was split into five sections. Upon our arrival we found that the temperature had dropped to an alarming three degrees at 7.30am and this I am sure was the reason behind the low weights.
Winner on the first day was the Welsh wizard, Doug Hornblow, drawn on the very fancied end peg 7 he initially caught on the bomb across on maggotbut later on the pole for a convincing victory with 15.72kg.
In second place on the adjacent
peg 6 was ex England international and tackle dealer Vinny Smith. He fished the pole again on maggots for 12.82kg.
Taking third place was John Waples who caught under the bush on the rejuvenated peg 32 with 12.16kg.
Other sections winners were Paul Davies 8.80kg from peg B1, Barry Smith 6.32kg from peg 21 and Martin Fisher with 3.54kg from peg 36.
Most of the weights were very close and it was all to play for on the second day. Day 2.
Day two was fished in very similar warm conditions although a little overcast at times.
Winner on the day from the very
fancied peg 26 was Alan Reid. Alan fished nothing but the method feeder with a variety of baits to weigh 15.58kg.
In second place was our Valencia raider John Havercroft, who used similar tactics from peg 27 for 12.64kg. In third place once again was John Waples who despite losing a lot of fish weighed 12.26kg from the fancied peg 1.
Other section winners were Alan Priest with 9.50kg from peg 5, Nick Bastock with 8.08kg from peg 19 and Richard Smith with 11.66kg from peg 40.
The full result of the two day festival can be found below. It was a pretty close run affair but the outright winner

Torrevieja book fair celebrates 25th anniversary
Benejúzar: the geographic centre of Vega Baja del Segura
On Saturday 1 April, the twentyfifth Torrevieja Book Fair was inaugurated on Paseo Vista Alegre, with the assistance of the Mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolon, the Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, and a special guest, the writer Santiago Posteguillo, winner of the 2018 Planeta Prize for his novel “Yo, Julia”.
After visiting the participating booths, the Mayor inaugurated the fair and congratulated the Councillor for Culture and his entire team for having consolidated a fair that has already become an unmissable event in the first part of the cultural programme of the Municipal Institute of Culture
“Joaquín Chaparieta”.
In front of a packed municipal
marquee, Santiago Posteguillo offered an excellent and didactic conference in which he spoke about the importance of culture and, in particular, of literature, which, for Posteguillo, must “entertain” and have “historical rigour”, especially in the subject matter that he deals with in his novels, the historical novel. After his speech, he signed copies of his new novel “Roma soy yo” to more than a hundred readers who came to the opening of the Torrevieja Book Fair. The mayor has given him a typical salt boat curdled in our salt lake, as well as the Torrevejense Dictionary, the latest book published by the Municipal Institute of Culture.
The Fair is now open to the public until Sunday 9th April, from Monday to Wednesday
from 10:30 to 14:00 hours and from 17:30 to 22:00 hours, and from Thursday to Sunday from 10:30 to 14:30 hours and from 17:30 to 23:00 hours.
A total of 8 bookshop stands (Librería Buendía, Asociación de Escritores Alas de Papel, Las mil y una libros, Papelería Torrevieja, Librería Trini, Librería Santos Ochoa, Librería Baigorri and Librería Rivendell) have been set up on Paseo Vista Alegre, as well as a marquee next to the monument to the Coralista, where the activities programmed for this Book Fair will take place. All those who make purchases at the fair will be entered into a prize draw to win a set of books. Throughout the Book Fair a total of 22 authors will be signing their works.
The town of Benejúzar is the geographical centre of the Vega Baja del Segura region. This has been determined by a report produced by the University of Alicante, which contains different interpretations of calculations and methods with the aim of finding out what the geographical centre of the Vega Baja is. “Both in my environment and in that of many residents of Benejúzar it had always been unofficially said that our town was the centre of the region and this concern led me to contact the university and Professor Amat”. In this way, the investigation “has concluded with a technical scientific report that proves that Benejúzar is indeed the geographical centre of the region of the Vega Baja del Segura,” said the mayor of Economic Promotion, Manuel Parra.
The councillor was accompanied by the mayoress, Rosa García; the Professor at the University of Alicante in the area of Human Geography, Gregorio Canales; the technical specialist in cartography and geographic information systems at the University of Alicante, Gabino Martín-Serrano Rodríguez and the doctor in geography and professor at the same university, Xavier Amat Montesinos.
To calculate the geographical
centre of the Vega Baja del Segura, two calculation systems were used, QGIS software and spherical geometry. This geographic information system has a command that allows the centroid or midpoint of a geometry to be obtained in a simple way. The report confirms that the geographical centre of the region is located in an area to the south of the town of Benejúzar, in the mountains, in the area known as La Pilarica.
In this sense, Parra explained that “we are located halfway between towns like Albatera and Pilar de la Horadada, or between Torrevieja and Orihuela”. The aim now is to plan actions around this fact and thus boost the tourist offer of the town. The Town Hall has placed a signpost on the viewpoint behind the sanctuary which reads: ‘Benejúzar. Geographical Centre of the Vega Baja del Segura’. “We want to propose specific actions throughout the year, as we are the geographical centre of the region, and take advantage of the mountain and the environmental values we have for anyone to come to the
centre of the region,” said the mayor.
For her part, the mayoress, Rosa García, thanked the University of Alicante for its work and, in particular, Gregorio Canales, as “it is an honour to have you come back to our town again and witness something so important for us and for our region”.
The mayoress said that “in Benejúzar we have a rich environmental and gastronomic heritage, and we have to deseasonalise our offer with activities throughout the year”. Likewise, the mayor stated that “during all this time we have achieved very important milestones together with all the people of Benejúzar, such as the declaration of Regional Tourist Interest of the Fiestas and Pilgrimage of El Pilar, and we have to continue along these lines so that more and more people visit us”.
