School to be built on Zenia Boulevard car park
centres in the province. however, the councillor for education, María García, has hailed the decision as a satisfactory outcome despite the backlash.
the move comes amid growing concerns about the schooling in the region, with many young students having to make do with corridor and storeroom spaces as temporary work areas. the department of education has identified the need for a new school to alleviate the pressure and has agreed to invest €9 million to create ‘School no 20’. according to reports, the school will initially have a capacity for 450 students and will be housed in prefabricated classrooms on the shopping centre car park. assembly work is set to begin before summer, with the school expected to be
operational by September when the new school year begins.
the decision to locate the school at Zenia Boulevard has prompted criticism from local associations, which claim that other available sites have been ignored. they fear that the move could have significant economic repercussions for the shopping centre, which is one of the most successful retail operations in the province.
despite these concerns, the Ministry and the Municipal Council have agreed that Zenia Boulevard car park is the most suitable location for the new school. the move is expected to help decongest and take the strain off the two current schools serving the coast - CeiP Los dolses and Playas de orihuela - and improve the educational service provided and in the region.
Extra capacity
the need for additional school places in orihuela Costa has grown in recent years due to the conflict in Ukraine, which has led to an increase in the Ukrainian and Russian population across the Vega Baja. as a result, many students have had to register outside the regular enrolment period, putting pressure on existing schools.
While the decision to construct a new school is widely welcomed, many local associations have expressed frustration that the economic future of the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre has not been taken into account. despite these concerns, the Ministry and the Municipal Council are pressing ahead with plans to erect the school buildings on the car park.
For now, the focus is on completing the construction of the prefabricated classrooms in time for the September term. additional teaching staff will be taken on in public schools across the Community, with a number of these earmarked for the new school. as the school grows, it is expected to provide much-needed relief on the local system.

Pilar hugger-mugger arrested
Civil Guard officers, who formed part of the Jewel 23 operation, have arrested a woman suspected of several crimes of robbery with violence. her attacks were carried out on elderly people through a method known colloquially as “hugger-mugger” in the town of Pilar de la horadada. the detainee, a 39-year-old woman, has been ordered into provisional prison by the Court of First instance and instruction no. 2 of orihuela.
officers noticed an increase in this specific type of robbery in the town and began a specific operation in order to catch the culprit.
the “hugger-mugger” is usually a woman who targets elderly men. these are carefully selected, and the woman will approach and strike up a conversation, ask a question or even pretend she knows the victim. the
woman will then move forward to give a thank you hug to the victim, at which point she skilfully and quickly removes jewellery, watches, wallets or other items they have in their sights. in the event that the act is thwarted or the victim realises what’s happening, the robber will not hesitate to use violence to seize the loot.
in March the police identified the perpetrator of the crimes - a Romanian woman, aged 39 years old. officers focused their inquiries on the identified woman and managed to locate her as she was preparing to approach an elderly man. Luckily the police thwarted the imminent crime and arrested the suspect.
the detainee, who has numerous criminal records for the same crime, was placed at the disposal of orihuela Court of First instance and instruction
no. 2, who ordered her provisional detention.
to avoid this type of crime, the Civil Guard advises people to:
– avoid flaunting jewellery or other valuables.
– Be cautious when withdrawing cash from banks or atMs.
– do not accept any proposal offered to you on the street, no matter how advantageous it may seem.
– if a stranger triesto isolate you from the place where they approach you, request the help of people around you.
– at the slightest doubt of being the victim of a scam or a criminal act, call the emergency telephone number 062 immediately. this is available, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Work resumes on Cala Mosca
the urbanisation works for alameda del Mar, known as Cala Mosca in orihuela Costa have been resumed, following the approval of the development project by the orihuela City Council. it has been fifteen years since work was halted and after having complied with all the environmental requirements requested by the competent authorities, the development company has restarted the building work for the construction of more than 2,000 homes.
the urbanisation project has been modified to meet all the demands for environmental protection the promoter said in a statement. it read: “the developer of the partial plan of the alameda del Mar de orihuela sector has included improvements and interventions that scrupulously comply with the provisions of the environmental impact Statement.”
the developer has ceded 60,000 square meters on the orihuela coastline to the administration and intendeds
to expand the flora micro-reserve in the area to protect the jarilla cabeza de gato plant. in addition, the accesses to beaches and coves from this reserve will be remodelled, which will have a perimeter fence to prevent access by vehicles, people or animals.its maintenance cost is fully assumed by the developer.
the urbanisation also includes an environmental surveillance monitoring plan that covers the period prior to the execution of the works,
their development and subsequent compliance with environmental conservation measures, as well as restoration of habitats and landscapes.
in addition to having the approval of the orihuela City Council, the reform of the urbanisation project of the alameda del Mar sector has the approval of the Generalitat Valenciana and the favourable resolution of the General directorate of Quality and environmental education, complementary to the impact Statement environmental.

No hablo ingles
a recent survey conducted by the national institute of Statistics (ine) has revealed that more than two-thirds of young people in the Valencian Community are unable to speak or understand english. the study included respondents aged 20 and below, with 73.2 percent claiming to have no knowledge of the language, making it the second-worst regional figure in Spain, surpassed only by Galicia in the north, which recorded 73.7 percent.
the survey also found that, as the age groups get older, the number of people with no knowledge of english increases. the response rate for those aged between 40 and 59 years was 81.5 percent. additionally, 68 percent of millennials between the ages of 20 and 39 admitted to not understanding the language, with 70pervent saying they do not read or speak anything in english.
even in popular tourist areas like alicante province, the percentages were similar, with 248,383 people aged 20 and under having no comprehension of english in alicante province, 340,459 in Valencia province, and 83,783 in Castellon province. according to several schools and teachers, the lack of english language proficiency is due to a shortage of teachers trained to
teach the language, as well as an excessive focus on grammar and vocabulary, rather than oral situations. interpreter
Maria domene suggested that a move away from traditional teaching methods towards the use of new technology could help improve english language retention rates.
She said, “We are in a country where everything is translated, and young people don’t watch t V and films in the original language simply for the ease of hearing it in Spanish.” She added, “We should move away from grammar and vocabulary and use new technology to make progress.”

Ruiz said: “Classes were boring and theory-based with little practice and no motivation to learn english in a fun way, meaning that we lost interest in learning the language, even though nowadays we need english for everything.”
the Valencian Community is an area where english language teaching is prominent in state schools. however, the survey’s results suggest that changes need to be made to teaching methods if english language proficiency is to improve in the region.

ITV tests to change in May
it has been announced that extra testing criteria will be included in compulsory it V vehicle inspections from 20th May this year, although not everyone’s cars will be affected.
Private and commercial vehicles are required to undergo a ‘technical inspection’, or it V, in Spain – for cars, this becomes mandatory once they are four years old, and takes place every two years. this is also necessary for those newer than four years old which have been used as hire vehicles or courtesy cars.once the car is 10 years old, it V tests are needed annually.
driving with an out-ofdate it V, or after the vehicle has failed and not yet been retested, is against the law – as is failing to display a valid it V sticker on the windscreen.
the it V procedures handbook is regularly updated, often with new elements to be tested added in – and the latest version comes into effect next month. two new criteria are present in the new version 7.7.0., but will not affect all vehicles, and do not require any extra action or cost to the owner. the first of these is the requirement for it V testing centres to check the eCall system is working properly. this system was made compulsory for all cars newly registered
from 2018 onwards, and is thought to have significantly cut the number of road deaths, since it is designed to send an automatic emergency service alert in the event of a crash.
owners whose cars have an eCall system are expected to have these checked periodically in any case, so its inclusion in it V tests now means not having to worry about arranging to do so unless they want to have it examined more than once every two years. Cars registered in 2017 or earlier do not have an eCall system as standard, so the new rules will not affect them. the second change relates to the on-Board Fuel Consumption Meter (oBFCM) but is not a ‘test’ as such. instead, it V stations will be
required to collate anonymous data on how much fuel cars use, and covers petrol or diesel vehicles as well as electric, hybrid and hydrogen. these data are found in the on-board diagnostics system serial port. they do not affect the outcome of the it V test, so no car can fail as a result of the reading, and once the information has been logged with the relevant State authority, the data are destroyed. only cars registered from 1st January, 2021 onwards are checked.
Varying from region to region, an it V typically costs around €40 to €55, and a retest fee for a failure is half of this –meaning it is good value for money for the reassurance it offers.

Police crackdown on fake watches
the Policia nacional has busted a huge distribution network of counterfeit watches that imitated high-end brands. the network, which involved thousands of bogus timepieces, was being run by a man and a woman out of a house in Guardamar del Segura.
the fake watches were dispatched throughout the alicante province to street sellers in popular tourist areas like altea, Calpe, and Benidorm. dealers could either come to the house and pay for what they wanted, or the distributors would personally deliver stock
to them.
acting on a tip-off, the police visited the address and found 79 high-end counterfeit watches in one of the cars parked outside the property. an entry and search warrant was also executed, leading to the discovery of 4,000 fake watches in the home.
the couple’s control of the counterfeit watch market was so dominant that they offered a wide range of brands at prices that were better than rival fraudsters.
the detainees, who were Moroccan nationals, were
released after giving a police statement before their court appearance. they were indirectly linked to a larger police operation which resulted in nine arrests in the area. Counterfeit products with a market value of around €10 million were seized in the operation.
the Policia nacional’s crackdown on this counterfeit watch distribution network has dealt a severe blow to the fraudulent activity in the region. the public is being warned to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to counterfeit goods.
Vaping more popular than smoking
teenagers in the Valencian Community are turning to electronic cigarettes, or vaping, more than traditional tobacco, according to a study conducted by the aeCC cancer charity in the region.
the study found that 46.3 percent of Valencian students between the ages of 14 and 18 had tried vaping, while 41.7 percent had tried tobacco in 2022. this marks a 5percentincrease in the use of electronic cigarettes over tobacco. the study also showed that teenage vaping had grown by over a quarter since 2014.
the aeCC expressed concern over the popularity of vaping among young people, as there is no perception of risk associated with its consumption.
Valencia aeCC President tomas
trenor warned that electronic cigarettes contain toxic and carcinogenic elements that can cause lung diseases and various types of cancer. he added that vapes and e-cigarettes are not a substitute for tobacco nor a method to quit smoking, as 87.8 percent of high school students who smoke daily also consume electronic cigarettes.
natalia Ruiz, coordinator of the health Promotion Unit of Contra el Cancer Valencia, expressed concerns that the
tobacco industry is trying to lure in new smokers through vaping. in response to these findings, the aeCC Valencia launched a campaign called ‘For 7 Reasons take off the Blindfold’, which aims to warn people about the toxicity and harmful consequences of electronic cigarettes, vapers, and hookahs.

APROP: Protectora D’Animales De Pego
aPRoP is a small, non-profit association sitting located in the orange groves in the outskirts of Pego. We have shelter facilities that can house approximately 30 dogs and 30 cats and also support a small colony of free-ranging cats on site.
our goal is to ensure that no cats or dogs suffer from being abandoned, lost or mistreated in Pego and the immediate surrounding area. Welook after and, when necessary, rehabilitate any animal that comes to us. Sadly, approximately 30% of dogs that arrive have been mistreated or abused, and not only hunting dogs, although we do see many of those. our ultimate goal is to either return the animals to their original homes if they have just been lost, or find them loving homes for the duration of their lifetime.
Last year 149 dogs and 130 cats arrived at aPRoP; 94 cats and kittens and 69 dogs and puppies were successfully adopted, and 27 dogs were reunited with their owners. our Catch - Sterilize -Return program (CSR) one year old this May, was able to catch and sterilize over 58 females preventing the birth of over 800 kittens that would have been roaming the streets wild.
We are resourced entirely by a multinational team of volunteers who give up their free time and energy to work at the shelter looking after the animals
and supporting the association. there are many ways in which volunteers can help, such as: cleaning and feeding or exercising andsocializing cats and dogs, fostering animals in their own homes, helping with adoptions, marketing, helping with social media or our website, taking photos and videos of animals, doing building and maintenance work, fundraising and running events, orhelping with the local trap, neuter and return scheme for feral cats in Pego.
our volunteers are our most important asset and we are always looking for morepeople to help us on a long-term or temporary basis. Yes, sometimes the volunteer work can be tiring, and occasionally emotional, but we also want volunteers to have some fun and enjoy their time with us and the animals. in the process you also get to meet some great new people who love animals. But the biggest reward is knowing that you have helped an animal in need. Seeing a cat or dog arrive in a bad physical or emotional state and then seeing that animal go to a wonderful new home and happy life is priceless.
If you are interested in knowing more about APROP or volunteering with us, take a look at our website: https://aprop-pego.org/ or give us a call on Tel: (+34) 611 08 50 24.

Have you lost contact with £9,500?
With the number of lost pots on the rise, now is the time to pay your forgotten pension pot some attention.
My personal financial admin is often a Sunday task that is almost always deferred for other mundane tasks, such as laundry or bathroom cleaning, and i work in finance.
this financial procrastination, or unawareness, is evidenced by the new lost pots figures published by Pensions Policy institute.
the value of lost pension pots now stands at £26.6bn. What’s even worse is the increase in the number of lost pots, which is nearly 75% higher than in 2018.
• Who are losing their pots? Primarily those under 55, which accounts for 65% of the total number of pots lost, but over half a million are still lost in the crucial pre-retirement period of 55-65.
• Why are pots being lost? Contact is typically lost because people move home and do not tell their provider they’ve moved. People have moved jobs and home more frequently since 2018, which has predominantly led to this increase. Recent research found that only 4% of people instinctively think to contact their pension provider about a change in address; in comparison 66% tell their bank.
• How much are they losing contact with? You would assume that a lost pot would be a smaller one, because surely any materially-
sized pot would have been, if not cherished, at least tracked by their owner. But these pots are not insubstantial. the average size pot which is lost amongst the 55–75-year-old range, is £16,004. the average across all ages, is £9,474.
if you worked in the UK and now reside here in Spain, there is every possibility that your money is waiting for you to make a claim.

GBP
it has been a fairly quiet week for UK data. however, the latest data from the onS confirmed that the UK government borrowed less than had been expected during the 2022-23 fiscal year. the £132.2bn total was around £13.2bn less than had been forecast, largely due to lower than predicted public borrowing over the period. this saving could potentially be passed on in the shape of previously unexpected tax cuts during the autumn budget statement. that would benefit many, given that a separate and rather downbeat report showed signs of increasing stresses among UK consumers. according to the report, around 40% of all 35-44 year olds are now resorting to borrowing to make ends meet on a monthly basis. that number is painfully high. Clearly the big impact to their cost of living and ongoing double-digit inflation are the drivers here. it is worth noting, that most are also in full time employment. the report will give both the Boe and government some serious food for thought.
the pound has also been fairly rangebound throughout the week, with GBP/USd attempting to gain a foothold over 1.2500 during Wednesday but was then dragged down by deteriorating market sentiment. Cable* then spent the rest of the week in the mid 1.24’s for the most part. GBP/ eUR edged back under 1.1300, highlighting the euro’s slight dominance over the pound. Looking ahead, it is a fairly quiet week for UK data, with the Boe set to announce their latest policy decision during the following week. taking that into consideration, the pound is likely to be driven by broader market moves, assuming no unexpected hiccups occur elsewhere.
*Cable is the market term for GBP/USd.
GBP / EUR UPDATE
EURO
the eCB are expected to increase euro area rates by another 25bps, at the conclusion of their latest policy meeting next week. although headline inflation has moderated throughout the region, albeit at different speeds, persistently high core inflation remains a big concern for the eCB. on that note, the eCB’s Wunsch explicitly highlighted this week that the eCB are waiting for core inflation to go down before they can arrive at the point where they can pause rate hikes. he said similar hawkish comments this time last week. Just in time, the latest inflation data is released next tuesday, and expectations currently predict a softer headline, combined with that higher core. Markets currently expect the eCB to follow next week’s meeting with another 25bps hike during the following month. Given that the Fed will likely have paused hiking US rates by then (see USd), those diverting rate dynamics have been one of the big drivers in assisting eUR/USd’s drive to a new 2023 high above 1.1050, which it tagged earlier in the week. however, we have argued that once the Fed stop hiking, other major central banks are likely to follow suit soon after. think of it a bit like when Forrest Gump stopped running. the path forward from there may be more uncertain, and life is like a box of chocolates. it has been fairly quiet on the data front for the euro area this week.the latest German iFo survey was a mixed bag, delivering opposing signals after expectations rose for april from 91 to 92.2. however, a weaker Current assessment and overall Business Climate took some of the shine off the latest survey. the rise in expectations may have been partly aided by a rebound among German activity since the beginning of the year

My parents said they want to take out equity release on their home in Spain, thus unlocking a large chunk of money in order to give to my sibling. They said they thought as I was not a problem to them, that they would also disinherit me and leave what is left to my sibling. They said they admired the fact that I’ve never asked them for anything; whilst my sibling and their and grandchildren did. I suggested that my sibling could easily sell their house and downsize, but my parents said their situation was a house of cards; the house was highly re-mortgaged and there are debts. Apparently, savings plans that were started in the 90s by my parents and given to my sibling, have already been cashed in. I might add, that no saving plans were ever proffered to me!

Your parents are in their late 70s and may go on to live another 15 to 20 years and will need their money for themselves. You raised the possibility of one or both of them becoming ill in their old age, and needing money to pay for care.
You also pointed out to them that it is you who live near to them in
Spain, and that it is you who will have the responsibility of looking after them in their old age; not your sibling (who is in the UK). You asked me if you thought you were right in telling them that you cannot be there to look after them, if they have disposed of money in favour of their irresponsible adult child. I agree; your parents are treating you appallingly, and placing your sibling’s happiness over their own health and care.

Five years ago, expert sea diver and naval Captain Jonas taylor encountered an unknown danger in the unexplored recesses of the Mariana trench that forced him to abort his mission and abandon half his crew. though the tragic incident earned him a dismissal from service, what ultimately cost him his career, his marriage and any semblance of honor was his unsupported and incredulous claims of what caused it - an attack on his vessel by a mammoth, 70foot sea creature, believed to be extinct for more than a million years. But when a submersible lies sunk and disabled at the bottom of the ocean - carrying his exwife among the team onboard - he is the one who gets the call. Whether a shot at redemption or a suicide mission, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life and the lives of everyone trapped below on a single question: Could the Carcharodon Megalodon - the largest marine predator that ever existed - still be alive - and on the hunt?

How long is it taking properties to sell in Spain
Research from Idealista, Spain’s largest property portal, showed that in December 2022, 20% of properties listed sold within a week, 35% in a month, 56% in three months and 85% in a year. Sean Woolley from Cloud Nine Spain explains why some properties do sell quickly and what causes others to hang around or not sell at all.
“On the Costa del Sol, I’d say the average time for a well-priced property to sell is between three and six months. That’s from when the property goes on the market, to getting an offer and taking a deposit. However, as you can see from the Idealista report, there’s a large variation on how long things take to sell. As a vendor there are some things you can do to speed things up, but there are also things that are out of your control.
How quickly something sells really comes down to supply and demand. If we get a listing in a popular development, or area, where there aren’t many listings competing with yours, then you know it will go quickly. We’ve recently had a few that have sold in less than a week, because we have a lot of interest in the areas they were in, the property ticked all the boxes and was priced fairly.
You need to time it right if possible, so there aren’t lots of competitor properties on the market at the same time, as you lose control of the price as the buyer can bargain and play one vendor off against the other.
Properties that aren’t selling so quickly are often not in a desirable area, so have fewer ideal buyers. It can also be that they are priced too high compared to similar properties in their
area, or they aren’t standing up to other properties in their area in terms of finish. At this point you either decide to invest to bring it up to standard, or drop your price to acknowledge that the buyer will have to invest more into the property.
How to price your property correctly
When pricing your property, make sure you do your research on other properties in the area and try not to be greedy. Get a number of agents to price the property and don’t always go for the highest valuation. Chose the agent that you trust and seems to understand the market and the area, as they are most likely to price it correctly. You can increase the price a little, to allow a bit of room for negotiations, but make sure you’re not out of step with similar properties in your area, as then you won’t get anyone in the door.
When to do work
Listen to your agents if they are recommending doing work. Many second homeowners don’t want to invest €10,000 toget €50,000 back and speed up the sale process. But as you only have one chance to impress, it really is worth the effort and investment.
You have to see beyond your tastes, to try and make your property appeal to the most potential buyers if you want a chance of a quick sale. For example, we had one vendor with abeautiful villa, but which was painted brown and it was really putting buyers off. We recommended that they paint it a more neutral popular colour to be able to sell, but they refused because they liked the colour, despite the fact that
I believe that this simple investment alone would increased the value of their property by €100K.
Warning signs that something isn’t right
There is a lot of interest from buyers at the moment. So, if you aren’t getting viewings, then there’s either something wrong with the price, or the marketing of your property. Ask your agent how they are ensuring the right buyers are aware of the property, make sure you have good professional photography and that the property looks good online. If all this is good, but you’re not getting viewing requests, we
recommend revisiting the price it is listed at.
If you’re getting viewings but not offers, then there’s something wrong with the property. This may mean you need to do work, give it a lick of paint, or simply stage it better to give the right impression. We recommend decluttering and depersonalizing the space, making sure all the lights are on and blinds are up to maximise light, cleaning and tidying and ensuring the place smells clean and fresh. Heat or cool the space to make it feel comfortable, keep pets out of the way and remove yourself from the viewing, leaving your property in the capable hands of
your agent. This should give you the best chance of getting an offer. Ask your agent what the feedback is from potential buyers if you’re not getting offers in and act on them to improve your chances of closing the sale.”

Ex-Royal Navy jam packed event including Ukrainian folk singers
The recent Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) meeting was another resounding success with the 59 Shipmates (S/M’s) and 4 guests in attendance when being entertained by four fabulous Torrevieja MusiKhome Ukrainian children singers, Andriy Golovnyuk Volosovych, Fedir Vasenko, Kateryna Panasenko and Yelyzaveta Bilokon, who were conducted by the mother of Andriy Golovnyuk.
The outstanding performances were very emotionally moving and included some traditional Ukrainian folk songs along with some modern songs which received a standing ovation.
The performance was organised by RNATB S/M Polina Uchaieva, who also gave a very heart felt and emotional introduction on behalf of the Torrevieja MusiKhome Head of School, Taras Khomyak, (https://www.facebook.com/ Taras.MusiKhome), as a way of thanking the RNATB S/M’s for all the ongoing support they have provided.
The RNATB S/M’s wish them and their families a happy and successful integration into either their temporary or permanent life in the Torrevieja area, along with a swift and peaceful conclusion to the current conflict in Ukraine.
Following the musical soiree, the S/M’s awarded several certificates as acknowledgement of significant milestones within the S/M’s branch membership system.
The instigation of a new award system includes S/M’s receiving an Award Certificate at a Branch Meeting on the anniversary of their 10th, 15th and 20th year of Branch membership.
As the RNA Torrevieja Branch was first Commissioned on 2nd October 1990, there are a number of S/M’s who are reaching these milestones; some of which are permanently based here as Spanish Residents and other S/M’s who may be considered as ‘wanderers’ and split their time between UK and Spain.
In attendance to receive their awards were S/M Joe Billet and S/M Rose Lyon who were both presented by the RNATB Chairman, S/M Tony Jenkins, with their Silver Award Certificates for 15 years membership of the Torrevieja Branch; which was a very proud time and consequently S/M’s gave both of them an enthusiastic ovation which indicates their ethos and core values of Unity, Loyalty, Patriotism, Comradeship.
The theme of Membership was continued when the S/M’s also gave a resounding round of applause when welcoming
aboard four new Associate Members; Dave Parle, Brenda Maw, Anna Verberge and Rita Poissonnier; who hail from UK, Holland and Brussels; and the RNATB Chairman presented them with their membership pack, which included their Badge, Membership Card and RNA Membership Booklet and is the point where they will now always be referred to as Shipmate’s.
These events were all in addition to the usual informative, exciting and entertaining Branch Meeting agenda on social events, S/M’s welfare & well-being, branch finances and importantly a Toast by all S/M’s, which is supplied by the branch.
Although the Toasts section of the meeting may vary with current special events or occasions, it always includes a Toast to those S/M’s that have a birthday that month.
The other intrinsic and excitedly anticipated finale to the Branch Meeting is the spectacular draw for the Raffle prizes; which is amiably conducted by the Raffle Coordinator, S/M Nicola Louden and enthusiastically supported by the Raffle Assistant, S/M Karen Davin and consistently has over 20 prizes which ensures that the S/M’s always sail away from the meeting in high spirits.

What is Barrett’s oesophagus? Symptoms and treatments
The specialists of the General Surgery and Digestive System service of Quirónsalud Torrevieja answer the most frequently asked questions about Barrett’s oesophagus (BE).
What is Barrett’s oesophagus?
Barrett’s oesophagus is a condition in which the lining of the distal oesophagus, next to the entrance to the stomach, is damaged by acid reflux, causing this lining to be replaced by a different one and causing Barrett’s oesophagus.
Risk actors for Barrett’s oesophagus: Family history.
Being a man.
Being white.
Age. It can occur at any age but is most common in adults over age 50.
Smoking or having smoked.
Overweight.
What symptoms are most common?
Patients with Barrett’s oesophagus have the same symptoms as those with gastroesophageal reflux disease: heartburn and regurgitation.
In addition, symptoms such as difficulty swallowing food and chest pains also appear, although to a lesser extent.
For some people, this gastroesophageal reflux disease can trigger a change in the cells lining the lower oesophagus and cause Barrett’s
oesophagus. Most people with a diagnosis of Barrett’s oesophagus report few or no symptoms.
What are the dangers of this disorder?
Barrett’s oesophagus is linked to an increased risk of developing oesophageal cancer.
“Although the risk of oesophageal cancer is low, it is important to have regular endoscopic check-ups and biopsies of the oesophagus to check for precancerous cells (dysplasia).” Explain the specialists of Quirónsalud Torrevieja.
What tests are performed for its diagnosis?
The test performed is upper endoscopy.
What treatments are there?
Treatment depends on the degree of cellular alteration of the oesophageal epithelium and the patient’s condition.
Periodic endoscopy, to monitor the state of the epithelium of Barrett’s oesophagus by means of biopsies, should be performed periodically every 1-2 years, depending on the type of cellular alteration.
In addition, gastroesophageal reflux should be treated with medications and lifestyle change.
When to operate?
Antisecretory medication, such
as omeprazole, reduces the risk of development and progression of Barrett’s oesophagus, but they are not effective in facilitating complete prevention, since they do not completely prevent the passage of stomach acid into the oesophagus, which continues to injure the oesophageal mucosa.
Therefore, anti-reflux surgery is considered superior to antisecretory medication in controlling Barrett’s oesophagus, and should be offered to patients as the best therapeutic option, reporting benefits as well as possible side effects.
What is the success rate of this surgery?
“The success rate of anti-reflux surgery is over 90% at 5 years,” say the specialists.
Recommendations to avoid reflux
A healthy diet, we eliminate spicy products, citrus fruits, tobacco, alcohol, coffee …
Do not make copious meals. Do not go to bed until 2 or 3 hours after eating.
Sleep with your head held high to prevent reflux from rising.
Sleep on the left so that our stomach does not turn towards the oesophagus. Lead a stress-free life. Treat constipation. Do not wear very tight garments. Avoid taking drugs that reduce
the tone of the lower oesophageal sphincter.
What is Barrett’s oesophagus surgery?
The surgery is performed laparoscopically and consists of making a valve with the patient’s own stomach, like a tie, that surrounds the oesophagus.
This valve prevents the acidic
contents of the stomach from rising into the oesophagus and damaging the mucosa.
How is the postoperative period?
“It is an operation that in expert hands has practically no complications and 24-48 hours the patient is discharged to his home, being able to lead a normal life 7-10 days after surgery” explains the specialists of Quirónsalud.

Torrevieja government adopts Adiem building as public property
The Councillor Secretary of the Local Government Board of the City Council of Torrevieja, Federico Alarcón, has reported the approval of the agreement for the granting of Public Property to the building of ADIEM (Asset No. 51 Municipal Inventory), located in the Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas. In this way, the 15-year concession granted on 16 September 2011 in favour of the ADIEM Vega Baja Association, of which ADIEM Foundation of the Valencian Community is currently the owner, is cancelled. However, the effects of the termination of this concession will occur at the same time as the effects of the new 75-year concession begin, i.e. with its formalisation.
This property includes the CRIS (Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Integration) building and the unconstructed annexe.
The granting of the concession to ADIEM Foundation on this property is carried out with the aim of continuing with the management of the CRIS that the ADIEM Association started in the first stage and ADIEM Foundation continued in a second stage, following the transformation, and with the intention, in the near future, of extending its work and building, in the part that remains next to the CRIS, a Day Centre for
people with mental illness, in a first phase, and a Cohabitation Resource, in a second phase.
All this will mean integrating the new projects with the CRIS and achieving a more agile, sustainable, efficient, social and non-profit management of all the resources in favour of the users residing in this Municipality.
During the concession period, ADIEM will be responsible for providing all the auxiliary, human and material resources to carry out the activity. In addition, the personnel assigned to the service provided will depend exclusively on ADIEM, who must comply with the legal provisions in force regarding employment, social security, health and safety at work, etc.
ADIEM will also be
responsible for the cleaning, maintenance and conservation of the property, as well as any repairs that may be necessary in order to maintain the property in accordance with the purpose for which it was granted, which will revert to the Torrevieja Town Hall once the concession has expired, i.e. within 75 years at the latest.
With regard to the electricity and water costs that would normally correspond to the concessionaire, as a user of these services, the Town Council will assume these costs, both for the CRIS and for the new building that is intended to be constructed in the part annexed to the CRIS. Likewise, the Property Tax (IBI) and the Rubbish Tax which would also correspond to ADIEM, will be assumed by this Town Hall.

England clinch Women’s Six Nations grand slam in epic finale against France
England 38-33 France
England sealed a Six Nations Grand Slam in front of a record women’s crowd of 58,498 at Twickenham, holding on for victory against France on a landmark day for the sport.
After a nervy start, Helena Rowland broke free in midfield and Abby Dow tore down the right wing to score and further fuel the already festival-like atmosphere in the London sun.
With the hosts seemingly settled, four more tries followed for a 33-0 half-time lead in England women’s first standalone Test at the ground. That proved enough to secure a fifth Six Nations title in a row, but the Red Roses could not push on after the break and it was France who scored five tries to their one.
The announcement of the attendance - surpassing the previous mark of 42,579 set at the 2022 World Cup final in New Zealand - breathed
joy back into the air and Twickenham was on its feet dancing to celebrate at full-time.
In Simon Middleton’s last game as head coach, England bounced back from a heart-breaking World Cup final defeat by New Zealand less than six months ago
“You couldn’t wish for more than this. It’s been an honour and privilege to do this job. I have been very lucky.
“The girls should be massively proud of what they are doing. I am so proud.
“To produce a game like that on a stage like this is everything that is good about the game. It’s been incredible. It’s a great learning experience that second half and they will continue to grow.
“This game has given me more than I’ve ever dreamed of. It’s been an exceptional day that I will never forget.
“You live for moments like lifting the trophy.”
This was the seventh year playing for the St George’s Day Plaque, this year it was sponsored by the Golf Society. The format was foursome’s blind pairs scoring Stableford points, Bonalba course was in reasonable condition for high seasonal though some of the fairways were bear and a number of bunkers without any sand but the greens were excellent and true, the weather was sunny and a pleasant 75 degrees with quite a strong wind. This year it was a very close competition with not many points separating all eleven pairs. Winners of the St George’s Day Plaque was Kenny Dow and “He’s on Fire”Steve Burns with 72 points, runners up were Steve Gain and “I’m here in one” John Fairbrass with 67points, third place went to “Tricky” Rik Wood and “What’s my HCP” Lee George with 65 points. Best front nine on count back was “Green Keeper” Ian Bell with 19 points
and best back nine also on countback went to “Templegate” Dave Sanders, also with 19 points. Nearest the pins group A were hole 5 “he’s on fire” Steve Burns, hole 12 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly, hole 14 “What’s my HCP” Lee George, group B hole 4 “Sat Nav” Steve Day, hole 10 “Tricky” Rik Wood and hole 16 Paul Davison. The Two’s pot of €15 was won by “I’m here in one”John Fairbrass on hole 8.
Back at Imanyo’s there was food and drinks waiting, two football cards were won, Peter Kelly with Wolverhampton and Paul Davison with Birmingham both winning €40 adding another €80 to our charities for 2023.

Sergio Perez reignites world championship bid with Azerbaijan GP victory
and is free to
Sergio Perez now sits just six points behind his team-mate Max Verstappen in the world championship standings; a win in Miami would put Sergio Perez ahead; team principal Christian Horner now believes Perez has to perform on non-street circuits
After his victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Sergio Perez is as confident as he has ever been that he can challenge Max Verstappen for the 2023 world championship.
Perez had an almost perfect weekend in Baku, winning both the Sprint and main race, and with just six points now separating him and Verstappen in the championship, he could take the lead if he wins in Miami this weekend.
Miami is a track that suits Perez as he continues to excel on street circuits and with the close fight at the top boosting his confidence, he has firmly set his sights on becoming world champion.
Indeed, he believes that without the
race Max Verstappen in 2023
issues he suffered in Australia, crashing out in Q1, he would be leading the championship already.
“We delivered under pressure massively, every single session was so critical in this format, it was really important to be able to deliver when it mattered,” Perez told Sky Sports F1.
“It’s a track where you require a lot of confidence, a lot of corners, and you see that a lot of drivers clip walls during the race. It’s all about confidence, lap after lap and making sure you’re on top of your car.
“Having three kids at home I wouldn’t be travelling around the world if I didn’t believe I could be a world champion.
“I’m working towards that, there’s so much you can talk about outside the car, it’s important to deliver on the track.
“I think with all the issues we had in qualifying in Melbourne we should be leading the championship, definitely there is everything to believe we can do
well this year.”
Although a world championship battle inevitably breeds tension, especially between team-mates, Perez believes his “similar mentality” to Verstappen will allow them to remain respectful while fighting it out.
“There is a very high level of respect between Max and myself, and the whole team, I mean the level we are operating, we are pushing each other really hard, we obviously want to beat each other, I want to win this championship as much as Max does,” he added.
“But, there is a lot of respect between us. In a way, we are very similar in the way we approach or think about the sport.
“I do not believe we will change, we will be fighting each other like we did today as much and as hard as we possibly can, but with a very high level of respect to us and to our team.”
