Campaigners highlight bed shortage at Torrevieja Hospital

Protesters have gathered outside Torrevieja Hospital to demand additional beds for the Torrevieja health department. The ‘Platforma por la Sanidad Publica y de Calidad’ led the protest to call on authorities to increase the number of beds in the hospital, so that it can at least reach the average ratio of beds per thousand inhabitants of the Valencian Community – which is 2.1 beds per 1,000 residents.

Representatives from the platform explained that the Torrevieja health department provides services to nine municipalities and 12 population centres across the Vega Baja region. This is the second most populated area in the province of alicante, with 367,082 registered inhabitants. The region

has a high population density, with a proliferation of elderly residents and foreign citizens. one in three residents in the Torrevieja health department is 65 years and older, with half of SiP health card holders being non-Spanish.

The Valencian Health Ministry says there are a total of 204,000 card holders in the department.

according to the platform, the hospital currently has 274 beds, 29 more than before, but still insufficient to meet the needs of the region and an additional 166 beds are required to reach the regional average. Twenty-nine beds have been added since the hospital returned to public management in october2021.

They pointed out that the

hospital’s shortage of beds puts stress on the entire hospital, and the emergency department is worst hit. The department receives the most significant occupancy of beds, leading to delayed treatments and interventions in scheduled consultations.

The protesters called on authorities to ensure that urban growth is consistent with respect for green infrastructure and the provision of necessary services to the population. They urged all political groups to budget for the expansion of the hospital, which would result in an increase in the number of hospital beds needed to care for the population of the Torrevieja health department.

Platforma spokesperson, eva de la Fuente, said the hospital had not kept pace with the rising population in the Torrevieja area.“The population has more than doubled over the last 20 years and rises dramatically during the summer season,” she said. “The bed shortage puts extra strain across the whole hospital and is especially noticeable in the emergency department,” she added.

Stricter driving controls for over 70s

The Spanish directorate of Traffic (dGT) has announced new measures for people over the age of 70 who are renewing their driving licence. The measures will include medical and psycho-technical exams to ensure that older drivers are fully capable of driving.

Previously, people over 65 renewed their driving licence every five years. However, the dGT is introducing a new rule for those over 70, requiring them to renew their licence every two years, in addition to undergoing important medical and psycho-technical exams.

To renew their driving licence, those over 65 will now have to undergo and pass medical exams, allowing the General Traffic directorate to reduce accidents by studying the driver’s physical abilities in detail. The new guidelines also aim to prevent the negative effects of ageing on driving, studying stiffness in muscles and joints, as well as measuring reflexes, vision and hearing.

The dGT’s deputy director, María José aparicio, reflected on the need for change in the data earlier this year. “30% of traffic accident fatalities in the european Union are over 65. These figures will worsen if we do nothing due to the ageing of the population,” she said.

it is not yet clear when these changes will begin to be implemented, but everything indicates that they will be carried out before the beginning of 2024.The new medical tests required

by the dGT for driving licence renewal will study a range of factors, including stiffness in muscles and joints, reflexes, vision and hearing. The person will also have to undergo other tests, measuring their reactions when driving in adverse weather conditions or in different problems presented when driving in unknown or congested traffic areas. This complete examination will allow the dGT to know about new ailments or loss of vision and reflexes every two years. in addition to finding out if other stipulated illnesses that lead to the withdrawal of the driving licence have developed over the months, such as respiratory illnesses, heart conditions, psychiatric disorders or degenerative diseases. older people will have to undergo a psychotechnical evaluation, a hearing study, an assessment of visual ability, an anamnesis exam, and a study of general blood pressure, pulse, and cardio-pulmonary auscultation.

The Vagina Monologues

The emerald isle recently played host to 140 people for dinner and some entertainment. Stevie Spit has just finished his warm up spot and everyone was tucking into their supper, when one customer stands up and says “i bet you’re all worried.” then another lady across the room stands up and says “We were worried,” then a third stands up and joins the

first two in chorus saying “We’re worried about vaginas” – and that’s how this started; talking to women about their vaginas, doing vagina interviews, which became ‘The Vagina Monologues’.

it’s the experience of more than two hundred women, older women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, corporate

professionals, sex workers, african american women, Hispanic women, asian women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. at first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy, but once they got going, you couldn’t stop them!

The Vagina Monologues was a way to bring some awareness to cancer and encourage women to examine

themselves regularly. it was also a chance to raise a few euros for two cancer charities; two very different charities - the aaCC and MaBS. The aaCC focuses on prevention and MaBS specialises in caring for people who have cancer. The evening raised €700 which was split equally between the two, both charities getting €350 each.

Two million euro boost for Orihuela tourism

Asian Algae invades Costa Blanca

alicante University marine scientists have discovered an invasive type of algae in Costa Blanca waters, as well as on its beaches. The ‘asian algae,’ officially named Rugulopteryxokamurae, is native to the asian Pacific region and has shown a great colonising capacity that negatively affects native marine species, fishing, and tourism. The invasive species was first detected on the beaches of Ceuta in 2015 and has since spread throughout the alboran Sea.

Scientists at alicante

University have warned that the algae can form large accumulations on beaches, which are difficult to manage and remove. The algae was detected in alicante area waters in March, and grows mainly on the dead forest of ‘Posidonia oceanica’ that is abundant in the area. Large quantities of the algae have been found on beaches, such as San Gabriel and Urbanova in alicante, as well as on other tourist beaches further away, such as arenales del Sol and more locally the coves of Cabo de Santa Pola, as it has

been dispersed by waves and sea currents.

The marine experts have confirmed the expansion of the asian algae in the Mediterranean Sea and stressed the importance of carrying out follow-up studies to monitor its abundance over time in the sites already colonised and detect its expansion to nearby areas.

The alicante University team believes more research is needed to evaluate its potential effect on the native species of the coast and to implement measures to control its expansion.

Spanish government unveils €2.19bn drought relief plan

The Tourism Sector Conference has awarded orihuela a subsidy of 2,000,000 euros for the 2023 destination Tourism Sustainability Plan.

García Zafrasaid: “The next legislature, whoever it is, will benefit from tourism marked by all the projects that have been presented in this initiative that has an execution period of three years.”

“We are committed to orihuela being a tourist destination, not only to attract visitors, but also to be a tool to create job opportunities for the people who live here and to generate wealth in our city,” explained the councillor.

a project that has been drawn up with the participation of all relevant private and public sector entities of the city. The proposal is transversal, inclusive and the objective is to carry out projects that not only affect tourism but also the sustainability and competitiveness of the destination from different perspectives.

one of the main objectives is to diversify the tourist offer and reduce seasonality, as well as the promotion of the digital tourism management and create proposals tailored to the visitor.

María García has reported that the plan includes the

installation of tourist signage on the coast that identifies both beaches and the municipal area. in Pedanías, place information panels through which residents will be informed not only about tourist activity, but also about municipal activities.

The project will work to meet the challenge of mobility by connecting the different urban centres such as the historic centre and closest districts through non-polluting means of transport such as electric bicycles or electric scooters and with the coast through a zeroemission tourism bus “that will improve the transport of visitors and residents”.

The Spanish government has announced a €2.19 billion plan to combat the ongoing drought in Spain. The Cabinet has approved a decree that includes a package of urgent measures to support the agriculture sector. The drought has caused irreversible losses to more than five million hectares of land used to grow cereals.

The assistance includes direct aid for farmers of more than €636 million, as well as subsidies covering up to 70 percent of the cost of insurance policies covering drought. The plan is the latest in a series of policy announcements being made by the central

government ahead of local and regional elections on 28th May and the general election due to be held toward the end of the year. Since 1stoctober, 2022, until this week, rainfall in Spain has been 27.5 percent lower than average according to europa Press, and forecasts suggest that Spain will not see significant rainfall until September. So far, 2023 is the fifth-worst year on record in terms of the amount of water stored in the country’s reservoirs.

“We will be taking immediate action in the basins affected by the drought […], which will allow us to guarantee

the supply of water for this summer,” said Teresa Ribera, one of Spain’s deputy prime ministers and minister for the environmental transition, at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting.

The administration, which is run by a coalition of the Socialist Party and leftist Unidas Podemos, was harshly criticised by the main opposition Popular Party (PP) for its plan. PP leader alberto nuñezFeijoo accused Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of approving drought measures in an electoral year after five years of ‘apathy’ and without proper planning when it comes to water.

Minimum wage increases agreed in Spain

Spanish trade unions and employers have come to a pre-agreement on minimum wage increases. The agreement, which was recommended by UGT, CC oo, and Ceoe, would result in a 4 percent increase in 2023, a 3 percent increase in 2024, and another 3 percent increase in 2025. additionally, a review clause is included, which could lead to further increases of up to 1 percent if inflation surpasses the agreed-upon rates.

The final ratification of the agreement will occur once it passes through the governing bodies of the social agents. The discussions aim to establish a new agreement for employment and Collective Bargaining (aenC), a document that serves as a guide for

Spanish companies and committees to negotiate salary increases, among other aspects.

The trade unions have been focusing their efforts on highlighting the loss of purchasing power of the working class for months. in 2022, the average inflation rate was 8.4 percent, while salaries under collective agreements increased by around 3 percent. Moreover, the last annual inflation rate, as of april, was 4.1 percent, while salaries rose by an average of one percentage point less in the first three months of the year.

The agreed increase is less than what was proposed by the workers’ representatives. CC oo and UGT proposed a minimum increase of 13.84 percent between 2022 and 2024,

starting with 5 percent for last year, 4.5 percent for this year, and 3.75 percent for next year. They also proposed that the review clauses depend on the companies’ economic situation, measured by the evolution of their profit margins. negotiation sources indicate that this section may still be included in the agreement, with these clauses structured based on data from the observatory to monitor corporate margins, which was announced last month by the Minister of economic affairs, nadia Calviño. despite the differences in opinion, the preagreement is seen as a positive step forward, with the aenC serving as a starting point for future collective bargaining negotiations.

Climate change fuels April heat

The extreme heat that has engulfed the iberian Peninsula and parts of north africa recently would have been “almost impossible without climate change”, an international scientific study has found.

The “exceptional early heatwave” involved “local temperatures up to 20 degrees hotter than normal and april records being broken by up to 6 degrees”, said the report by the World Weather attribution (WWa), whose scientists study the link between extreme weather events and climate change.

a mass of hot, dry air from north africa reached the iberian Peninsula early last week, driving temperatures to record highs for april, with the mercury hitting 38.8 degrees Celsius (101.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in southern Spain and 36.9C in central Portugal.Such temperatures only tend to occur in July. in Morocco, local records were broken with temperatures soaring above 41C in some places, while in algeria, they exceeded 40C.

Spain this year recorded its driest and hottest april since at least 1961, when such records began, national weather agency aeMeT said.

“Human-caused climate change made the record-

breaking heatwave in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and algeria at least 100 times more likely and the heat would have been almost impossible without climate change,” the WWa report found. it caused “temperatures up to 3.5 degrees C hotter than they would have been without climate change”, provoking an event they described as “rare”. experts predict that we will see more frequent and more intense heatwaves in the future as global warming continues. Such abnormally high temperatures followed “a historical multi-year drought in those regions, exacerbating the impacts of the heat on agriculture which is already threatened by an increasing water scarcity,” the WWa said.

in Spain, which is known as

europe’s vegetable garden, the main farmers’ union, CoaG, has warned that 60 percent of agricultural land is currently “suffocating” from the lack of rainfall. With water reservoirs at half their capacity, Spain has asked Brussels to help by activating the european Union’s agriculture crisis reserve funds. experts say parts of Spain are the driest in a thousand years, with the ongoing drought prompting some farmers to choose not to sow crops this year.

after experiencing its hottest year on record in 2022 and the extreme april heatwave, Spain’s government was forced to come to the defence of aeMeT, whose forecasts have been met with a barrage of threats and abuse from climate conspiracy theorists.

Almoradi PP presents renewed candidacy

The emblematic Teatro Cortés was the setting for the presentation of the almoradí Popular Party’s candidacy for the elections on 28th May.

The rain did not stop the local residents from supporting the Popular Party, who presented a “renewed project for the future, combining experience, confidence and enthusiasm”, as expressed by the candidate for mayor and number two in the Valencian Parliament, María Gómez, on an emotional night, in which in addition to presenting her team, she expressed her “real” commitments to the citizens after 28 May, reviewing the achievements and investments that have been made in this mandate year,

with more than 43 million euros of investment, to follow her roadmap of “transforming almoradí”.

The event was attended by the regional deputy for the Partido Popular José Juan Zaplana López, who expressed his gratitude for this invitation, given that his roots are here in almoradí, and took the opportunity to ask his family and friends for their trust in this project, praising the great management work carried out by María Gómez, at the head of any administration.

after two videos summarising what has been done in the last four years, a period in which, with María Gómez at the head of a great team of people, she has been

able to manage the largest investment in its history, positioning almoradí as a real reference and engine of the Vega Baja, it was the turn of the candidate who said that “in these difficult 4 years we have been able to recover from the dana, the pandemic and now inflation with high prices. if i am in charge of almoradí again in the future, we will be able to do everything we set out to do”.

He ended with a special request: “i ask for your confidence in this team for two reasons. For the confidence that everything that has been done gives us and for a better future, in which all the people who accompany me carry almoradí in their hearts”.

The £1 coin is 40 years old.

it was released in 1983, when david Bowie was top of the charts with the classic hit Let’s dance, and Margaret Thatcher was reelected in a landslide victory.

This humble coin has lost more than twothirds of its purchasing power since it was minted, with the buying power of just 30p if it was kept in a piggy bank, or down the back of a sofa.

That is despite annual retail price increases only breaching 10 per cent three times over the past 40 years: in 1990, 2022 and again this year – currently sitting at 10.1 per cent. it means that you would need £3.17 to purchase something today that cost £1 four

Had that £1 coin been stored in a bank account, invested in the stock market or used to buy property, it would have kept pace with inflation and in many cases returned a healthy profit. But which asset would have delivered the highest pay off?

Stock Market Wins

The UK stock market has proved to be the best home for your money over the past 40 years. The average fund that invests in UK shares has returned 3,185 per cent during that time, growing a £1 investment in 1983 to £32.85 today.

inevitably the more risk you take, the higher the potential rewards. While the stock market is a far more volatile investment than gold or property, investors are paid handsomely for taking on that added layer of risk.

GBP as expected, the Bank of england (Boe) delivered a twelfth successive rate hike yesterday (Thursday), raising UK interest rates by another 25bps to 4.5%. at 7-2, the voting pattern was also the same as last time round, with Swati dhingra and Silvana Tenreyro once again voting for a pause.

The Boe also significantly revised their short term UK inflation outlook higher, admitting that they had underestimated the strength and stickiness (sorry) of food price rises. The Boe now think that UK inflation will not reach their 2% target until early 2025. They had previously expected inflation to subside to that level within a year. on a positive note, the Boe now think that the UK economy will avoid a recession, with GdP expected to reach 0.25% throughout this year, and then surging by 0.75% during 2024. Gone are the days when andrew Bailey was predicting a long drawn out recession in the UK, and whilst growth may not be anything to write home about, growth at any level is something to cheer about. Given that headline inflation remains in double digits, markets still expect the Boe to be forced into further rate hikes, with those changing rate dynamics one of the key drivers sparking the recent rally to a one-year high in GBP/USd. The expected terminal rate is now at 5%, which would imply another 2 further hikes from the Boe. While the pound may have witnessed some profit taking after the Boe, those implied rate hikes could help to keep the pound elevated in the longer run. in the meantime, GBP/USd dropped from over 1.2600, to just under 1.2500 yesterday afternoon, a move which was aided by broader market risk aversion and profit taking/position squaring after the event.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

Looking ahead, next week should confirm another solid UK employment report, with iLo unemployment predicted to remain at (or near) 3.8%.

EURO

With the eCB having raised euro area rates by another 25bps last week and signalling further hikes to come, one may have assumed that the euro would continue rising, but the single currency has since struggled to maintain its impressive recent rally, with eUR/USd slipping from a high of just under 1.1100, to around 1.0900 by yesterday (Thursday).

Markets seem unconvinced that the eCB will persist with rate hikes for much longer than the Fed, which may be impacting the shortterm profile for the single currency. Recent commentary from eCB officials has also left more questions than answers, with a more cautious view on future rate hikes from the eCB’S nagel, even if the likes of Lagarde and Kazaks have maintained their own hawkish outlooks.

on the data front, the latest release of German inflation saw Harmonised inflation remaining at 7.6% on an annual basis. Regional inflation is expected to remain close to the 5.6% region when released next week. The latest growth data is released next week too, with provisional regional growth predicted to have risen by 0.1% during the first quarter of this year and 1.3% on an annual basis.

Back to the euro and overall market risk sentiment will play a big part in dictating the short-term profile for the single currency. if markets remain twitchy, then this will likely feed through to a weaker euro and vice-versa.

Artichoke board game based on the “jewel of the vegetable garden”

The dynamics of the game is similar to that of the goose but the main character is the artichoke and all the content is linked to the characteristics of the crop.

10,000 copies will be distributed to pupils in the first and second year of primary school in the municipalities which form part of the association.

The Vega Baja del Segura artichoke brand, with the sponsorship of Caja Rural Central and the support of the alicante Provincial Council, has created a board game dedicated to the jewel in the garden.

The president of the Vega Baja artichoke association, antonio Ángel Hurtado, pointed out that this is an “original, different and very attractive initiative to reach the region’s schoolchildren with the aim of educating them about the values of the market garden, raising awareness of the importance of the sector for the region, the characteristics of artichoke cultivation and encouraging healthy eating habits”.

a total of 10,000 copies have been published and will be

distributed free of charge to pupils in the first and second year of primary school in the 11 municipalities which form part of the association (almoradí, Benejúzar, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Cox, daya Vieja, dolores, orihuela, Rafal, Rojales and San Fulgencio).

The illustrator of this board game was Marta Ruiz, Martuja, who is the author of the book ‘el alcasil’, among others.

Marta Ruiz pointed out that the dynamic is similar to the traditional goose game but with a 100% Vega Baja perspective. The protagonist is the jewel of the orchard and the squares are related to the crop. The game consists of 46 squares and the reward is to reach the harvest and enjoy the Vega Baja artichoke.

To do this, you will have to get around some of the squares that make cultivation difficult, such as rabbit or snail pests that make you go backwards, if you fall into the wrong crop you lose your turn and if the crop is flooded, you have to go back to the starting square. on the other hand, there are squares that allow us to move forward, such as the irrigation

round, tilling the land, if it rains or if there are artichoke rows, while if we fall into the artichoke square, we can roll again.

Making our identity known and keeping the market garden alive

For antonio Ángel Hurtado, “raising awareness among schoolchildren is fundamental for us. Many of the initiatives we carry out are focussed on the younger generations because it is a way of making our identity known and keeping our market garden alive”.

The president of the Vega Baja artichoke wanted to thank Caja Rural Central for its support and highlighted the commitment of the entity with the Vega Baja artichoke.

in this respect, the president of Caja Rural Central, Manuel Ruiz, congratulated the Vega Baja artichoke association for the initiative because “it is about promoting a crop of reference in the region, because it is a product with numerous properties and, in this way, we are also contributing to the health of the citizens and because this type of action brings a lot of value to society”.

Tips and techniques for a happier, healthier you

Living a happy and healthy life is something that everyone wants, but it can be difficult to achieve. With so many demands on our time and attention, it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to taking care of ourselves. Fortunately, there are many simple tips and techniques that you can use to improve your overall well-being. in this article, we will explore some of the best ways to live a happier, healthier life.

Living a happy and healthy life is something that many people aspire to, but few achieve. The demands of modern life can make it difficult to take care of ourselves, and we often neglect our own well-being in favor of work, family, and other obligations. However, by following a few simple tips and techniques, you can improve your overall well-being and live a happier, healthier life.

When it comes to living a happy and healthy life, there are many things that you can do to take care of your mind and body.

From eating a nutritious diet and staying active, to practicing mindfulness and finding ways to manage stress, the choices you make can have a big impact on your overall wellbeing. in this article, we’ll explore some tips and techniques for living a happier, healthier life.

Exercise

The first tip that we recommend for a happier, healthier you is exercise. exercise is not only great for your physical health, but it’s also excellent for your mental health. exercise releases endorphins, which are natural chemicals in the body that make you feel good. Whether it’s a brisk walk or a high-intensity workout, find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.

Get enough sleep

The second habit we recommend is getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have a significant impact on your mood, productivity, and overall health. adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. To improve your sleep quality, create a relaxing bedtime routine, avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed, and keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

Practice gratitude

The third habit we recommend is practicing gratitude. Gratitude is the act of being thankful for what you have, rather than focusing on what you lack. Practicing gratitude can improve your mood, increase your happiness, and reduce stress levels. Start by writing down three things

you’re thankful for each day or take a moment to reflect on the positive things in your life.

Connect with 0thers

The fourth habit we recommend is connecting with others. Social connections are vital for our mental health and well-being. Make time for your friends and family, join a social group or club, or volunteer in your community. Connecting with others can reduce feelings of loneliness, improve your self-esteem, and enhance your overall life satisfaction.

Practice self-care

The fifth and final habit we recommend is practicing selfcare. Self-care means taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This can include activities like taking a bubble bath, reading a book, or practicing meditation. Whatever it is that makes you feel good, make time for it regularly.

So, there you have it - our ten tips for a happier, healthier you. Remember that small changes can make a big difference in your life, so start incorporating these habits into your daily routine today. don’t forget to see our videos on a Healthier Happier You at our web site www.harryinspain.co.uk and also on our you tube site. Hello Dolly is coming to town

Studio 32 are thrilled to announce that their upcoming summer show

Hello Dolly is in the advanced stage of rehearsals. A joyous, heartwarming and classical musical experience that is set in the 1890s, the show follows Dolly Gallagher Levi, a matchmaker, as she travels to Yonkers, New York, to find a match for the miserly “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder. Along the way, she sets her own sights on him, while also pairing up several other couples.

With a lively and uplifting score by legendary composer Jerry Herman, and a script by Michael Stewart, the show has been entertaining audiences around the world since its Broadway debut in 1964, starring the incomparable Carol Channing.

Some of the most memorable moments of the production is the “It Takes a Woman” song, sung by the formidable Horace Vandergelder character. The song reflects on the role of women in society and their influence on men, created in an enrapturing and funny way that the audience won’t

want to miss. Also the great numbers ‘Ribbons Down my Back’, Before the Parade Passes by’, Hello Dolly’ and the romantic love song ‘It only takes a Moment’ will give you a musical feast to lift your spirits.

The show will be directed by the talented Kevin Spicer, with musical direction by Nicole Casey and great choreography by Lindsey Kendall Walker. The cast includes some of the finest local talents, bringing the charming and memorable characters to life on the stage.

Studio32 invites everyone to come and join them for a night of laughter and pure entertainment. Whether you are an avid fan of Broadway classics or experiencing live theatre for the first time, Hello Dolly is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Can you lend A Helping Hand?

We would first like to thank everyone who responded to our advert last week and brought in supplies of food and children’s clothes and toys. We are based in Avenida Deva, San Luis and are open from 10-1 Tuesday and Friday. If you want to pop in and say hi to the volunteers and get an idea of the work we do, we would love to see you.

We are still desperately in need of children’s clothes for this summer along with any toys you can spare. Maybe even visit a charity shop and get some used toys there and pass onto us, that way 2 charities benefit.

This week sees a real need for tinned tomatoes, cheese slices, packet soup and any kind of pasta.

As always baby wipes are

always wanted and Mercadona sell a pack of three for just €3, so maybe you can add a packet and a tin of tomatoes to your weekly shop.

If you can help in any way, then there are various drop off points which can be found on our Facebook page, or alternatively, simply take your donations to the BIG FM studio in Quesada.

Health Problems for Men

As men age, their bodies go through various changes that can lead to a host of health problems. These problems can range from minor issues such as back pain to more severe conditions like heart disease. In this article, we will discuss some of the most common health problems faced by men and provide tips on how to prevent and manage them.

Prostate problems are among the most common health issues faced by men. The prostate gland, which is located below the bladder, can become enlarged as men age, leading to problems such as difficulty urinating and increased risk of urinary tract infections. Prostate cancer is also a significant concern for men, with over 190,000 cases diagnosed in the US each year. It is important for men to get regular prostate exams to detect any potential problems early.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the US. This condition occurs when the blood vessels that supply the heart become blocked, leading to chest pain, shortness of breath, and other symptoms. There are several risk factors for heart disease, including smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem among men, particularly as they age. This condition occurs when a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. There are several causes of erectile dysfunction, including low testosterone levels, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Treatment options include medication, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgery.

Depression and anxiety are significant health problems for men. Men may be less likely to seek help for these conditions, leading to a higher risk of suicide. Symptoms of depression and anxiety include feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, and changes in sleep and appetite. Treatment options include

therapy, medication, and lifestyle change

Diabetes is a growing health concern for men, with over 13% of men over the age of 18 affected in the US. This condition occurs when the body is unable to produce or use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, and blurred vision. Treatment options include medication, diet changes, and regular exercise.

Obesity is a significant health problem for men. This condition occurs when a person has a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, which increases the risk of several health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet can help men lose weight and improve their overall health.

Skin cancer is a significant concern for men, particularly those who spend a lot of time in the sun. Men are more likely than women to develop skin cancer, with over 60,000 cases of melanoma diagnosed in the US each year. It is essential to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays by wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder among men. This condition occurs when a person’s breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, leading to loud snoring, gasping, or choking sounds. Sleep apnea can increase the risk of several health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Treatment options include lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and avoiding alcohol and sedatives, and using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine.

Back pain is a common health problem for men, particularly those who work in physically demanding jobs or lead a sedentary lifestyle. Back pain can be caused by several factors, including muscle strains, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis. Treatment options include pain medication, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery.

Hearing loss is a significant

concern for men, particularly those who work in noisy environments or have a history of loud music exposure. This condition can be caused by several factors, including aging, noise exposure, and genetic factors. Treatment options include hearing aids, cochlear implants, and assistive listening devices.

Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in the body, leading to painful joints and other symptoms. Men are more likely than women to develop gout, with over 3 million cases diagnosed in the US each year. Treatment options include medication, lifestyle changes, and avoiding certain foods and beverages.

Testicular cancer is a rare but significant health problem for men. This condition occurs when cancer cells develop in the testicles, leading to symptoms such as pain, swelling, and lumps. Testicular cancer is highly treatable if detected early, and treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Stroke is a significant health problem for men, particularly those who have a history of high blood pressure, smoking, or heart disease. This condition occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, leading to symptoms such as weakness, numbness, and difficulty speaking. Treatment options include medication, surgery, and lifestyle changes.

Men may face several health problems as they age, including prostate problems, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, depression and anxiety, diabetes, obesity, skin cancer, sleep apnea, back pain, hearing loss, gout, testicular cancer, and stroke. However, many of these conditions can be prevented or managed with a healthy lifestyle and regular medical care. Men should prioritise their health and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms or concerns. By doing so, they can improve their overall health and well-being and enjoy a long and fulfilling life.

Beetroot & halloumi salad with pomegranate and dill

Ingredients

1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

2 oranges

4 handfuls rocket leaves

2 cooked beetroots, chopped

Drop rapeseed oil, for frying

80g thinly sliced halloumi, slices halved

80g pomegranate seeds

2 tbsp pumpkin seeds

Handful mint leaves

Few sprigs dill, chopped

Method

STEP 1

Put the sliced onion in a bowl, add the vinegar and toss well. Cut the peel and pith from the orange then segment over the onion bowl to make sure that you catch any juice.

STEP 2

Pile the rocket onto plates and dot over the beetroot and orange. Rub a drop of oil around a non-stick frying pan then fry the halloumi in the pan for about 30 seconds each side until golden.

STEP 3

Stir the pomegranate into the onions and spoon this and all

the dressing, over the rocket, then top with the halloumi and scatter with the pumpkin seeds, mint and dill.

Quick chicken hummus bowl

Ingredients

200g hummus

1 small lemon, zested and juiced

200g pouch cooked mixed grains

150g baby spinach, roughly chopped

1 small avocado, halved and sliced

1cooked chicken breast, sliced at an angle

100g pomegranate seeds

½ red onion, finely sliced

2 tbsp toasted almonds

Method

STEP 1

Mix 2 tbsp of the hummus with half the lemon juice, the lemon zest and enough water to make a drizzly dressing. Squeeze the grain pouch to separate the grains, then divide between two shallow bowls and toss through the dressing. Top each bowl with a handful of the spinach.

STEP 2

Squeeze the remaining lemon juice over the avocado halves, then add one half to each bowl. Divide the chicken, pomegranate seeds, onion, almonds and remaining hummus between the two bowls and gently mix everything together just before eating.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck engage in yet another strained exchange at The Mother premiere... after slew of tense public moments during two-year rekindled romance

They have been seen engaging in a series of tense exchanges throughout their two year rekindled romance, having been seen looking strained.

And Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck once again looked serious as they hit the red carpet at the premiere for her new movie The Mother on Wednesday evening.

The Get Loud songstress, 53, was gesticulating at her husband, 50, who she married last year, with a frown on her face while he strained, looking firm during the chat.

After they were snapped during their tense conversation, they soon reverted to Hollywood mode with beaming grins and stage-worthy kisses.

Wednesday’s appearance comes after the couple hit headlines at the Grammys in February when Jennifer was caught on camera demanding Ben pretend to be enjoying himself, in an embarrassing exchange, which he later discussed.

Dolph Lundgren, 65, joins fiancée

Emma Krokdal, 24, in Beverly Hills as he reveals secret eight year battle with lung cancer

Dolph Lundgren appeared to be ready for a gym session as he ventured out with fiancée Emma Krokdal on Monday - two days before revealing he has lung cancer.

The Swedish actor, known to millions for his role as merciless Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, confirmed he has been battling cancer for the last eight years during Wednesday’s edition of In Depth with Graham Besinger.

But Lundgren, 65, was in good spirits while out with Norwegian fitness trainer Krokdal, 26, in Beverly Hills, where they were seen outside a local café just 48 hours earlier.

The muscular screen legend wore a T-shirt and shorts over a pair of gym leggings, with his relaxed attire suggesting the were venturing out for some light exercise.

Lundgren revealed he was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015 and speculated whether his past use of steroids for bodybuilding is to blame.

Discussing his diagnosis with Besinger, the actor says he went into remission but the cancer returned in 2020, resulting in doctors giving him a

sobering 2-3 year life expectancy.

‘The cooling of their friendship is obvious on the sofa’: This Morning viewers note tension between Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in wake of fall-out claims

This Morning viewers reacted to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s appearance on Thursday’s show amid feud claims between the pair.

The duo, aged 42 and 61 respectively, put on brave faces as they appeared on screen following whispers that they are ‘not as close as they once were’ and now barely speak off camera - something viewers seemed to note.

Flooding Twitter while the episode aired, fans of the pair pointed out that

while Phillip was trying to engage with Holly she was seen to ignore him while others insisted she was ‘pretending everything’s ok’.

Holly and Phil became ‘great friends’ having first met on Dancing on Ice and they have presented This Morning together since 2009. She was also described as his ‘rock’ when he came out as gay live on This Morning in 2020.

But their relationship is said to have become strained in recent months after they came under fire when they were accused of skipping the queue to see the Queen lying-in-state last September.

‘I pretended this wasn’t happening to me’: Michael J. Fox says he ‘drank to

disassociate’ after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the height of his Hollywood career

Michael J. Fox says his drinking spiraled out of control as he attempted to escape his devastating Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

The much-loved actor was just 29 when he was diagnosed with the degenerative condition after developing tell-tale symptomsnotably a nervous twitching of the fingers - while filming romantic comedy Doc Hollywood in 1991.

And he admits to being in denial for more than a year, during which his drinking rapidly escalated - leading to inevitable tensions in his marriage to actress Tracy Pollan.

Featuring in new Apple + documentary Still, the 61-year old recalled: ‘I intended to pretend as if this wasn’t happening to me. I drank to disassociate. Tracy got to the end of her rope because now we had twins.’

His drinking had already become a concern as his career soared in the years leading up to his diagnosis, with the boyish Fox establishing himself as a Hollywood leading man while battling demons behind the scenes.

New Mini hatchback to rival Volkswagen Golf

The all-new MINI Hatchback is set to take on the popular Volkswagen Golf with a host of new features. We take a first look at the new MINI to see what it has to offer.

The all-new Mini hatchback

The all-new MINI Hatchback is set to rival the Volkswagen Golf with its sporty design and powerful engine. The hatchback features a sleek exterior design that is sure to turn heads, and an updated interior with all the latest features and technology. The engine is powerful yet efficient, making the MINI Hatchback the perfect choice for those looking for a fun and stylish car.

Taking On The Volkswagen Golf

The new MINI Hatchback is set to rival the Volkswagen Golf with its economy and style. The car is said to be more fuel efficient and have a lower emissions output than its German counterpart. The design of the car is also said to be more modern and sleek, making it a good choice for city dwellers.

A first look at the new Mini

The all-new MINI Hatchback is set to take on the Volkswagen Golf with a host of new features and improvements. The most noticeable change is the new grille, which gives the car a more aggressive look. The interior has also been completely redesigned and now

features a 7-inch touch screen display. Other notable changes include LED headlights, updated suspension and brakes, and a choice of three or five doors. The all-new MINI Hatchback is sure to turn heads when it hits showrooms later this year.

The new features of the Mini hatchback

The new features of the MINI Hatchback include a more powerful engine, a sportier design, and a plethora of cutting-edge technology. The new MINI is more than capable of going toe-to-toe with the Volkswagen Golf, and it’s sure to turn heads when it hits the streets. Whether you’re looking for a fun daily driver or a weekend warrior, the new MINI Hatchback is definitely worth a look.

How the Mini hatchback stacks up against the Volkswagen Golf

The all-new MINI Hatchback has been completely redesigned and is now bigger and better than ever. It’s got a more refined look and feel and comes packed with state-of-theart technology, making it a serious contender in the hatchback market. How does it stack up against its main rival, the Volkswagen Golf?

The Golf is a bit longer and wider than the MINI, but the MINI Hatchback is actually taller, so it has a more

commanding presence on the road. Both cars have similar wheelbases, but the MINI’s is slightly shorter. In terms of engine options, both cars offer a variety of petrol and diesel engines, but the MINI’s are slightly more powerful overall. The entry-level Golf comes with a 115 horsepower engine, whereas the entry-level MINI Hatchback has 122 horsepower.

When it comes to technology, both cars are well equipped, but the MINI Hatchback has an edge over the Golf. For example, the MINI Connected infotainment system offers seamless smartphone integration and allows you to control various car functions using your voice or gestures. The Golf’s infotainment system is very good too, but it doesn’t offer quite as much functionality as the MINI Connected system.

So, overall, the new MINI Hatchback is a very impressive car that can hold its own against any rival in the hatchback market - including the Volkswagen Golf.

Conclusion

The new MINI Hatchback is a great car that rivals the Volkswagen Golf. It has a lot of features that make it a great choice for anyone looking for a new car. The only downside is that it is a bit more expensive than the Golf, but it is worth the extra money.

An Added Day

As the racing on the previous two Sundays and then Wednesday had to be canceled, the SAMM Race Committee added an extra day on Sunday May 7th. Unfortunately only seven competitors on three boats were entered. Were other competitors nursing sore heads after celebrating the Coronation too enthusiastically?

The competitors and organisers all arrived on time, a good start, but the weather was not looking good. It was overcast and, whilst everybody was getting ready, a storm broke with heavy rain, thunder and lightning. It was forecast to be fine after 11am so the Race Officer announced that the preparatory signal would be 11.15. Because the briefing board was soaked he drew the course on a sheet of paper and showed all the competitors, while giving a full explanation of how the racing was to be run.

The 1st race started well but the bigger Sailfish 18 struggled, when the wind dropped from 5.5 knots to around 3, and went sideways and backwards but found their way later, unfortunately too late to recover their place and finished last. The Laser crew had not set their mainsail correctly so used the interval to raise it fully.

A Guardian Civil boat arrived and

were helped to moor. The very friendly crew were very interested in the SAMM regatta. They appeared to be on a training day as they dropped some buoys and were practicing manoeuvres around them.

The 2nd race was better as the wind had increased to 6-7 knots. All three boats started and sailed well. By the penultimate lap, on the downwind leg, the Omega and Laser were both closing to lap the Sailfish. The Omega manoeuvred to take her wind and caught her at the mark. They were both goose-winged and the Sailfish had to jibe their boom to avoid a touch and give the Omega water as it was the overtaking boat. That proved not to be problem as the next leg was a beam reach to the start/finish gate. The Average Lap times showed a much closer result.

The weather developed as forecast and became very sunny and a lovely day was had by all involved.

Results: First race. Omega 821 secs, Laser 963 secs, Sailfish 1250 secs. Second race, Sailfish 493 secs, Laser 514 secs, Omega 521 secs.

Information on SAMM and their racing can be found on www. sailingmarmenor.com

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 9th of May we fished the 9th Round of the Spring cup which was also the Memorial Trophy. The memorial trophy is fished to remeber all past members that are sadly nolonger with us. This was of particular relevence this year werewenot only remebered Chris Fenley and Tomy McMillan but also Terry Screen who we had laid to rest the day before.

The match was fished in bright sunny although slightly blustery conditions and 20 anglers took part fished on pegs a1 to 7 and 26 to 40.

If you put a very good angler on a good peg then the outcome of

the match is virtually decided at the draw. This was in fact the case when Neil McBernie drew peg 1 with only 5 anglers on that stretch. Neil fished the pole with maggots and after a slow start started catching on a regular basis eventually putting together 30.72kg for a runaway victory.

In second place and continuing his excellant run of form was The Welsh Wizard , Doug Hornblow. Drawn on peg 7 he used simialar tactics for 16.2kg.

In third place was Bob Robinson who drawn on peg 26 was the only one to make double figures on this section which fished extremly

tough. Bob used a variety of methods but caught mainly on the feeder and weighed a very credible 15.26kg.

It was an eventful day with a couple of pole breakages, we are going to miss Mr Fixit, Terry Screen. Alice would like to thank everyone who turned out for his funeral on Monday. It was the best attended funeral that I have been too over here and he will be missed by us all.

Rod N Reels

The following day we made only the second trip of the year to our local venue Pedrera. This venue is often overlooked, mainly because

the access is not great and the fishing can be patchy. I di not attend the match so the details I have are scant and approximate.

Winner on the day was Doug Hornblow, drawn on the spit on peg 1 he caught several carp on the feeder with maggots or pellets for 10kg. In second place was Bill Reade who was drawn on the point, Bill caught barbel late on , on hemp and Tares on the bomb for 7.8kg. In third place was the other Welsh raider Alan Davies who had 4.7kg .
