Local hotel stays to beat 2022

Local hoteliers are anticipating a bustling summer season with increased hotel stays compared to last year, according to the Hosbec hoteliers’ association. The Benidorm-based group revealed that reservations across the region have already reached 80% for July and are nearing 90% for August.

In a statement, Hosbec expressed con dence that all destinations in the Valencian Community would surpass the gures recorded in 2022, primarily

due to the absence of any pandemic restrictions this summer. However, July’s hotel reservations are currently slightly down by 1.2% compared to 2019. Despite this, the association highlighted positive trends and a marginal growth for the rest of the summer.

Hosbec attributed the slight decline in July bookings to several factors. Firstly, the early part of the month coincides with school exams, which a ects family tourism. Additionally, some people may be delaying their bookings until after the general election on 23rd July, resulting in a temporary lull in reservations.

Hosbec’s president, Fede Fuster, noted that July gures could potentially rise once domestic tourists know whether or not they will be required to perform polling station duties.

Notably, four-star “superior” hotels in Benidorm are in high demand this month, with 84% of them already booked up. Across other destinations in the Valencian Community, reservation rates range between 70% and 80%. The average room rates per night exceed €200 in Valencia province, €188 on the Costa Blanca, and €160 in Benidorm.

With expectations of a vibrant summer season, hoteliers are optimistic about the recovery of the tourism sector. The absence of pandemic restrictions and the growing interest in hotel reservations bode well for the region’s economic revitalisation in the post-pandemic era.

Alicante-Elche Airport scoops accessibility award

Fake designer goods confiscated in

Alicante-Elche Airport has received international recognition for its exceptional e orts in creating an accessible environment for people with disabilities and reduced mobility. At the WAGA 2023 event, organised by the Airports Council International (ACI) in Barcelona, the airport was presented with the coveted ‘Accessible Airport Award’ for Europe.

The airport’s remarkable achievements in surpassing the minimum accessibility requirements set by the European Union were highly praised by the judges. A dedicated team led by airport manager Laura Navarro has worked tirelessly to establish a truly inclusive infrastructure for

all passengers.

Among the noteworthy measures implemented by Alicante-Elche Airport are specialized lanes catering to individuals with reduced mobility, the introduction of a loading area exclusively for electric wheelchairs, and the ongoing construction of a sensory room designed speci cally for passengers with hidden disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The ACI, an organisation representing more than 700 airport representatives, regulators, and analysts, convened in Barcelona to discuss the major challenges faced by the aviation industry in a post-pandemic world.

In addition to the awards ceremony, attendees shared valuable data and projections while engaging in discussions on crucial topics including regulations, policies, regional and international connectivity, and the pursuit of environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Airport manager Laura Navarro expressed her gratitude upon receiving the ‘Accessible Airport Award’ and emphasised the airport’s commitment to continually improving accessibility standards beyond what is mandated. This prestigious accolade solidi es Alicante-Elche Airport’s position as a leader in providing a seamless and inclusive travel experience for all passengers.

Elche’s Policia Local have made a signi cant breakthrough in their ght against counterfeit goods, seizing 100 boxes of fake products bearing popular brand names. Acting on a tipo that counterfeit items were being sold at a local store, o cers swiftly launched an investigation that led to a successful raid on the premises. The tipo provided crucial details, including the location of a suitcase containing samples of the counterfeit products near a warehouse door. Armed with this information, the police wasted no time and conducted a thorough search of the premises. To their satisfaction, the reported suitcase was found, lled with imitation Prada and Gucci bags.

Warehouse employees, however, were unable to provide a reasonable account of the seized items and presented con icting stories. It was later revealed that they had been instructed to provide misleading information by their manager. Police proceeded with a comprehensive search, ultimately unearthing 100 boxes packed with a variety of counterfeit goods from a dozen well-known brands. These items were promptly con scated by the authorities.

In addition to the counterfeit operation, it was discovered

that the business in question lacked the necessary licensing.

Furthermore, serious safety concerns were identi ed as no re extinguishers or re suppression systems were found on the premises, potentially endangering the lives of employees and customers.

Meanwhile, a separate operation conducted a few kilometres away on a Crevillente industrial estate resulted in

the arrest of a 47-year-old Chinese national. This individual was found to be storing an astounding 1,779 counterfeitbranded children’s clothing items intended for distribution to retailers. Apart from charges related to intellectual property crimes, the individual also faced legal repercussions for failing to have a proper waste management system in place at his warehouse.

Statistics reveal devastating impact of extreme heat on Spain’s population

In a shocking revelation, o cial gures released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) have con rmed that the scorching heatwaves experienced in 2022, the hottest year on record, were responsible for more than 350 deaths from heatstroke and dehydration. These extreme weather conditions played a decisive role in a staggering 20.5% surge in mortality across the country.

According to the INE, between the months of May and August last year, a total of 157,580 people lost their lives, marking an increase of 26,849 deaths compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Disturbingly, the causes of death directly linked to the heat were strikingly higher than before, with heatstroke cases reaching 122 compared to 47 in 2019, while dehydration cases soared to 233 from 109 in the same period.

The detrimental e ects of the relentless heat extended beyond heatstroke and dehydration alone. The rising temperatures also acted as triggers for other severe conditions, such as heart attacks and respiratory problems. Many of the additional

deaths were attributed to individuals with pre-existing chronic illnesses, which made them particularly vulnerable to the high temperatures. Deaths associated with high blood

pressure-related conditions saw a signi cant increase of 36.9%.

Moreover, the statistics indicated alarming spikes in deaths related to diabetes, which rose by 31.2%, and dementia and early-onset dementia, which experienced a troubling surge of 19.8%.

Spain, a country familiar with soaring summer temperatures, has already witnessed its rst heatwave of the year. The mercury has soared to a scorching 44.4°C in the province of Huelva in Andalusia. Tragically, two people have already succumbed to the extreme heat. Last Saturday, a

In response to these devastating incidents, Spain has implemented a ban on outdoor work during periods of extreme heat, following the death of a municipal worker in Madrid last summer. The country has also established legal limits for maximum and minimum temperatures in workplaces.

The World Meteorological Organisation has identi ed Europe as the fastest-warming continent globally, with Spain anticipated to be one of the countries most severely a ected by climate change. Spain’s longstanding experience with high summer temperatures, especially in the southern regions, has been compounded by a surge in longer and more intense heatwaves, further exacerbated by a worrying scarcity of rainfall.

Mandatory mask wearing finall scrapped

The Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities in Spain have announced the end of the mandatory mask policy in hospitals, health centres, and pharmacies. This decision marks the culmination of e orts to eliminate mask requirements across all sectors, with medical establishments being the nal area where the restriction was still in place.

E ective immediately, the use of masks in medical facilities will be recommended but no longer obligatory. The mandate will continue to apply only in speci c areas with immunosuppressed patients, such as cancer units, operating rooms, and intensive care units (ICUs).

The Interterritorial Council made this decision after thorough deliberation and review of a document detailing the current pandemic situation in Spain. The document, compiled by experts from the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) under the guidance of Fernando Simón, served as the basis for the council’s discussion and decision-making process.

According to the latest data published by the Ministry of Health on 16th June, the cumulative incidence rate among

individuals over 60 years of age, the only age group currently measured, stood at 66.52 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Hospitalisations of coronavirus patients represented a mere 1.42 percent in general hospital wards and 1.12 percent in ICUs.

During the council meeting, various options were considered, ranging from an immediate and complete lifting of the mask obligation to a phased approach or a de nitive removal. José Miñones, the Minister of Health, emphasised the signi cance of relying on expert opinions to determine whether mask mandates should persist in medical settings.

Tourism growth

Once again, Spain’s tourism sector is basking in the glow of a remarkable resurgence. The latest data for the month of May unveiled substantial growth rates in international passenger arrivals, igniting excitement among industry authorities and sparking a newfound optimism for the future.

Until now, hospitals, nursing homes (for both sta and visitors), and pharmacies were the only places where mask usage remained mandatory. The requirement had already been abolished in public transport since 8th February, 2023, after being introduced on 4th May, 2020, during the initial wave of the pandemic.

The current Covid-19 situation in Spain di ers signi cantly from previous periods. Notably, events that have historically led to a surge in infections, such as Easter or the commencement of summer festivities, have not resulted in a notable increase in cases this time.

Among the standout performers in Spain’s tourism landscape was Poland, which emerged as the fastest-growing market with a staggering 36.4% growth compared to the same period in the previous year. It was an impressive feat that rmly established Poland as a rising force in the Spanish tourism scene. Following closely behind was Portugal, boasting a growth rate of 24.1% and signalling a signi cant rise in Portuguese visitors ocking to Spain. Italy, too, experienced a noteworthy increase of 22.6%, indicating an escalating a nity for Spain among Italian travellers.

Unmistakably, it was the British tourists who left an indelible mark on the Spanish shores, particularly in the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. These idyllic regions played host to 25.2% and 21.2% of British passengers, respectively.

Figures from Turespana revealed that a total of 7,439,633

travellers from the United Kingdom had graced Spain’s shores during the rst ve months of the year.

Meanwhile, Germany emerged as the second-largest country of origin for international passengers arriving in Spain, hot on the heels of the UK. German passengers accounted for 14.8% of the total arrivals in May 2023, enjoying a respectable growth rate of 7.5% compared to the same period in the previous year. The Balearic Islands emerged as the preferred destination for German visitors, attracting an impressive 45.2% of the total German arrivals.

Claiming the title of the third-largest country of origin, Italy accounted for 9% of the total passenger ow in May, witnessing a substantial yearon-year growth rate of 22.6%. Catalonia emerged as a popular choice for Italian passengers, with 29.9% opting for this

vibrant region, closely followed by Madrid, which welcomed 25.8% of Italian visitors.

France contributed 7.9% of all passengers in May, displaying a healthy growth rate of 9.8% compared to the previous year. The bustling cities of Madrid and Catalonia were the primary bene ciaries of this increased in ux of French visitors, as they immersed themselves in the vibrant Spanish culture. Meanwhile, international passengers from the Netherlands experienced a modest 1.5% increase in May, with Catalonia and the Balearic Islands remaining as their preferred havens.

The overall data paints a vivid picture of Spain’s thriving tourism industry, with a remarkable growth rate of 28.8% in passenger arrivals during the rst ve months of the year, reaching an impressive total of 34 million.

What is the NLV residence certi cate that I have heard about?

The NLV is a Non-Lucrative Visa that is available to UK passport holders who wish to move to Spain. Other options include the Golden Visa and now the new Digital-Nomad visa. For many people moving to Spain now, the NLV is the easiest route to go and especially useful for people who have sold a house in the UK to fund their dream of living in a warmer climate.

You will need to prove that you have su cient nancial means to support yourself without working in your new country. The minimum monthly income requirement for this type of visa is currently €2,259.60 for the main applicant, plus €564.90 for each dependent. The money (at least two years’ worth) can also be kept in savings of some form. This equates to €35,991.88 per couple per year.

Therefore, it is essential to have a solid nancial plan and investment strategy before applying for the visa. You should consider taking professional advice from a nancial advisor who understands the laws and regulations of both Spain and the UK.

Do I need to keep the money in a Spanish bank account?

No. Spanish bank accounts do not pay much interest and therefore your money will not be working for you.

We recommend considering alternative investments like:

•A Spanish-compliant investment bond

•Rental income from a property

•Deposits in other countries

It is essential to research and compare di erent investment products, their risks, fees, and tax implications before making any decisions. It is also a good idea to look for diversi cation within a portfolio and to keep the money available for renewals within the rst ve years.

Finally, you should keep accurate records of your investments, income and expenses to comply with the visa renewal requirements and tax obligations in Spain. A Spanish-compliant bond will assist you with all the above.

Spanish rent freeze expires

The Spanish government’s anti-in ationary measures, introduced in response to the war in Ukraine, are due to expire on 1st July, 2023. Among these measures is the rental price freeze, which was extended from January 1st to June 30th, 2023. The government initially granted this extraordinary extension following the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent price surge, to prevent landlords from increasing rents during this period.

However, as the rental freeze comes to an end, landlords will now have the opportunity to raise rents on contracts up for renewal starting from July 2023.

It is important to note that despite the expiration of the rental freeze, the government has implemented caps to

restrict excessive increases.

Under the new Housing Law, rental prices can only rise by a maximum of 2 percent in 2023 and 3 percent in 2024, regardless of the level of in ation. These limitations ensure that existing contract holders are protected from exorbitant rent hikes. It should be noted, though, that the rental cap does not apply to new contracts signed or those signed after 2019.

Spain’s Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, defended the decision to let the shortterm rental freeze expire by highlighting the maximum rent caps already established by the Housing Law for 2023 and 2024. She emphasised that the initial freeze was implemented to assist renters during the aftermath of the pandemic and in ation, both of which have

signi cantly subsided in Spain. However, the expiration of the rental freeze has sparked dissatisfaction among leftwing political parties, including Podemos and Sumar, who are part of the governing coalition. These parties argue that ending the rental freeze undermines a measure that extended rental contracts, prevented abusive price increases, and evictions. The timing of this disagreement is noteworthy, as Spain’s general election is just weeks away, scheduled for 23rd July. While the rental freeze is coming to an end, suspensions on evictions of vulnerable individuals will be extended. This means that tenants facing economic vulnerability, where nding alternative housing is impossible, will not face evictions.

Playas Vivas to raise awareness of loggerhead turtles and other species

The association has been deployed on the beaches of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja and Orihuela.

The Faunatura Association has launched the Living Beaches Project, an initiative that aims to raise awareness and protect the rich and varied biodiversity present on the coasts of the south of the province of Alicante, with a special focus on species such as Posidonia (Posidonia oceanica), the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) or the emblematic loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta).

More and more loggerhead turtles are coming out onto our beaches to lay their eggs, so it is essential for the public to know what to do in the event of a sighting. There are many occasions when beach users, not knowing what the proper protocol is, do not hesitate to approach the animal to photograph it and even touch it, putting the nesting event at risk, something that already happened on 22 June at Playa de los Locos, in Torrevieja. Faced with this situation, Faunatura technicians together with a team of volunteers, are making a great e ort to try to patrol the beaches of Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja and Orihuela

informing locals and visitors and explaining how they should act. Keeping a minimum distance of 20 metres, not standing in its eld of vision, not shining a light on it and of course calling 112 quickly, are some of the measures that can help to make the nesting attempt a success.

In addition to these walking routes, the Living Beaches Project includes various awareness-raising and environmental education days in information tents to raise

awareness of the wide variety of species of fauna and ora present in the Mediterranean. Some of these activities have already taken place and during the month of July the rest of the actions will continue, which anyone interested can sign up for free. The aim of these actions is to raise public awareness, improve their ability to react to future nesting events in the area, and create a team of volunteers to guard nests on our beaches in the event that the competent authorities so require.

GBP

GBP / EUR UPDATE

BoE governor Andrew Bailey admitted this week that UK interest rates may need to stay higher for longer than had been expected, as persistent UK in ation forces the BoE’s hand. Speaking at the ECB’s annual conference in Portugal, Bailey highlighted marketimplied expectations for future BoE rate hikes, saying ‘the market, I don’t think, thinks we’re nearly done at the moment. They’ve got a number of further increases priced in for us.’

Bailey is spot on, with the latest estimates predicting a new BoE terminal rate of around 6.25%, with some banks recently extending that to around 6.5%. Gulp. As we have highlighted previously, the positive impact to currencies from higher rates starts to erode considerably if recession risks increase substantially, and that is part of the reason why the pound is struggling to run up a down escalator in ippers at present. GBP/USD has now fallen by around 1.5% from the peak of 1.2840 just ahead of the last BoE meeting. However, were the dollar to resume its recent downtrend, then the pound could still be dragged higher given that the dollar side of the pair is still the most powerful draw over time.

Incoming data has hardly helped to improve sentiment, with news this week that leading supermarket Asda’s latest income tracker suggests that over 40% of UK households are not earning enough to cover their weekly expenses. The data also con rmed how much sticky in ation is impacting spending power, with those households now su ering an average shortfall of around £42.50 every week. Of course, the survey was conducted before UK rates were raised by 0.5% to 5% last week. The latest UK growth data was also released earlier this morning (Friday), with growth increasing by 0.1% during the rst quarter of this year, and 0.2% on an annualised basis over the same period.

In other news, the latest Nationwide House Prices con rmed an annual 3.5% decline in prices during June, with a slight (0.1%) increase over the past month. Time to batten down the hatches.

EURO

The ECB received a pleasant surprise on in ation from Spain of all places yesterday (Thursday), with news that Spanish in ation has fallen to 1.6% on an annual harmonised basis during June. That is an impressive decline indeed. The welcome decline makes Spain the rst major European economy to see its in ation level fall to below the ECB’s 2% threshold since the beginning of the Ukraine war. This time last month, that gure was up at 2.9%, and the last time Spain’s in ation was down here was roughly two years ago. The big declines came among fuel, electricity and food prices.

The government have played a big part for Spain, issuing fuel subsidies and policies that erased the link between domestic electricity prices and wholesale gas prices, which clearly had such a staggering impact on in ation for the rest of Europe. However, Spain is lucky, given that it relied far less on Russian gas imports, and has an abundance of solar and wind power. As we often say, core in ation is another bestia altogether, and whilst still on the decline, remains at around 5.9%.

It was not such a sunny day for German in ation, which increased by 0.4% over the past month and rose considerably from 6.3 to 6.8% on an annual basis. Key Regional in ation is released later today (Friday) and is also expected to have edged slightly higher over the past month. The striking di erences among in ation in the region highlight the increasing problem for the ECB. Speaking this week, Christine Lagarde remained particularly hawkish on the prospect for further interest rate rises, with another 25bps move expected next month. However, Lagarde did admit that the ECB are now moving closer to a potential pause.

As for the Euro, overall, the single currency has also witnessed a fairly at week, with EUR/USD declining slightly to just under 1.0900. Tellingly, there has been no collapse. GBP/EUR also declined below 1.1600, con rming that the single currency had a slight edge over the pound.

Three men arrested while attempting to steal from a warehouse in Cox

Three men have been arrested while attempting to rob a warehouse in Cox in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Cox - Granja Local Police arrested the three men accused of a burglary o ence after being alerted by the manager of a company in the San Fernando Industrial Estate in Cox who claimed to have heard footsteps on the roof of the building.

When the patrol went to the scene, they observed a large

ladder and the silhouettes of several people on the roof of the company, so they requested the collaboration of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of Callosa de Segura.

On checking the roofs of the company, they were able to arrest three men, one of whom was hiding among the solar panels installed. The agents also seized the objects that the detainees were carrying, such as torches, transmission equipment, a sledgehammer,

a sledgehammer, a disc machine, a ladder and various other tools.

The alleged perpetrators have been taken to court and the Local Police of CoxGranja has thanked both the quick warning given by the manager of the company and the collaboration of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of Callosa de Segura, as this quick coordination has allowed the arrest of the three individuals.

San Fulgencio receives Valencian Community tourism recognition

The O cial Gazette of the Generalitat publishes this appointment reserved for localities that promote the quality of services for the tourist population.

30/06/2023 - The municipality of San Fulgencio is now o cially a Tourist Municipality of Singularity of the Comunitat Valenciana. The O cial Journal of the Generalitat has published the resolution of this recognition with which the Autonomous Secretariat of Tourism distinguishes those municipalities that promote quality in the provision of services to the tourist population through sustainable and inclusive tourism and based on hospitality.

As the mayor of San Fulgencio, José María Ballester, pointed out, participating in this procedure has many advantages, “by providing a regulatory framework for the action of the public administrations of the Comunitat which facilitates the preservation and improvement of our tourist resources, as well

as their planning and territorial structuring”. Ballester also said that this distinction “is an incentive to continue working for excellence in the services we o er to all visitors who come to San Fulgencio to enjoy its proximity to the beach and nature, our traditions and our gastronomy”.

The mayor has also highlighted the recent awards that have been granted to the Consistory in the area of Tourism. These include obtaining the Q for Tourism Quality certi cate for

the Tourist O ce, awarded by the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality, as well as the drafting of the municipal Strategic Tourism Plan, which is currently under development. Likewise, the mayor of San Fulgencio highlighted the work carried out by Reme García and Inés Lorenzo, the municipal workers of the local Tourist O ce, who have been responsible for processing the documentation to apply for this recognition as a unique tourist municipality for San Fulgencio.

Our children’s education wasn’t easy; we put them in Spanish school when we moved here, however neither of them settled, and they ended up going to International School. I expected them to get jobs working with Spanish nationals; neither of them wanted to do this and I now realise their level of Spanish was not sufficient for them to feel comfortable about mixing. I do not blame the School - they were taught a decent enough level of the language, but did not keep it up or mixed with the Spanish. One is now waiting tables, whilst the other is in the UK to take an apprenticeship in carpentry. We rarely see him, and when I complain he could have done this in Spain, he says he was not happy living in Spain and blames us for his bringing him here.

the UK and can take his skills anywhere in the world. Your daughter, you tell me, now has the chance of managing the bar she started working in. Most of us, when we get to an older age, reevaluate our lives and realise that possibly the job we’re in no longer has the prospects of advancement;

it is quite possible that one day your daughter may wish to own her own establishment. A SAMM Day Out

Two of the SAMM Groups, Balaton and Shoestring, enjoyed a fun sailmeal-sail on June 23rd, organised by Balaton Group leader Julian Pering as part of the SAMM Social calender.

Two Shoestring boats Uno and Cuatro and three Balaton boats started from their base at CAR, Los Narejos on the Mar Menor at 10:30 with the SAMM support boat, crewed by Martin and Norman, following along; all heading for the La Playa restaurant at Los Urrutias. Some wives and other members were to meet them there.

Two of the Balaton Groups Russian members we’re sailing Sirocco with new Swedish member Nils.  Vision was crewed by their German member Jurgen with Jez and guest Shelley, Ginetta by Julian with Colum and Laura.

The ve boats sailed through the gap between Pediguera and Baron

islands on a south easterly breeze then turned West towards Los Urrutias. Well most did! For some reason Jez was convinced that Los Urrutias was further down the coast and instead of following the other four boats decided to sail on South. Once they realised the mistake they put away their sails and motored in order to catch up.

The Shoestring dinghies put into the beach adjacent to one of the new jetties while the Balaton boats anchored o shore due to the shallow water.

Everybody had an excellent menu del dia At La Playa restaurant with 22 people from SAMM attending. After lunch Julian accepted the “Parrot” (a prize for a Balaton member who messes up) from Sergey for the mistake of not putting Visions keel down at the start of the last race day. However, he was pleased to immediately pass this to Jurgen

and Jez for heading in the wrong direction this morning.

Over lunch Colum and Laura asked if they could join the Balaton Group and have since done so.

The dinghies were able to get quickly away once the lunch was over and the Whaly gave the crews a taxi ride out to the Balaton boats. As requested by Martin, Julian helped push the Whaly o the jetty and, as a reward, was soaked to the skin by the prop wash when Martin deliberately revved the engine. Unfortunately no video of this ambush.

On the way back the boats had a lovely beam reach sail in a decent breeze. Sirocco decided to take a route to far to the east the crew not knowing they should steer for the blue building which shows where to head to get back to CAR. Jules phoned to get them back on track and they were not far behind, coming in fast on the good breeze.

Torrevieja hospital extends dialysis service

The dialysis service at Torrevieja Hospital extends its coverage during the summer to meet the demand and take on displaced patients.

- The provision with which the centre has to absorb the total demand for care and also assume displaced patients in holiday periods

- The Torrevieja Health Department has reinforced the Nephrology Service with the incorporation of eleven new professionals following the recovery of public management.

Torrevieja (29.06.23). The dialysis service of the University Hospital of Torrevieja extends its coverage during the summer months in order to meet the demand and take on displaced patients. This extension of hours allows patients from other departments, communities or countries who are on dialysis programmes to come and spend their holidays in the city of Torrevieja and the surrounding area.

The centre’s facilities allow it to absorb the total demand for care and, in addition, to take on holiday patients from other departments, autonomous communities or countries who are on the dialysis programme.

Patients receiving dialysis

treatment generally spend about four hours a day for two or three days a week. During these months, the department’s healthcare population multiplies, so the service goes from having two dialysis shifts a day to increasing it with a night shift.

The Torrevieja Health Department reinforced the Nephrology Service with the incorporation of eleven new professionals, following the recovery of direct public management by the Regional Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health.

Speci cally, seven new nursing professionals, one doctor, one orderly and three auxiliary nurses joined this care service, which is improving the comprehensive care of renal patients, making progress in the

accreditation of the Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease Unit.

The Nephrology Service of Torrevieja Hospital, coordinated by Beatriz Díez, is one of the rst in the country to implement the rst Quality Accreditation model for units that treat patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (ACKD), and to achieve accreditation of the ACERCA Quality model promoted by the Spanish Society of Nephrology (SEN).

The Dialysis Unit has the most advanced technology and equipment designed to meet the needs of patients. It has high permeability dialysers and state-of-the-art monitors, as well as the possibility of monitoring advanced dialysis techniques and home therapies by means of peritoneal dialysis.

Specsavers Ópticas’ Plea to Drivers This Summer

Summer in Spain has been dubbed accident season, as millions of people take to the roads for holidays, resulting in an increase in the number of road tra c accidents. In the months of July and August 2022 alone, there were 225 deaths due to road tra c accidents in Spain. This is why, the experts at Specsavers Ópticas are urging people to make sure their eyesight will not be a cause of accidents this summer.

Due to higher volumes of tra c, increased alcohol consumption, greater numbers of tourists and hot weather, there are more road tra c accidents in the summer meaning drivers need to be extra vigilant – especially when it comes to their vision.

To help people stay safe behind the wheel, Specsavers Ópticas is sharing advice on how to access a ordable eye care, as well as guidance on how to ensure our eyes remain safely and rmly on the road:

1. Make sure your prescription is up to date

It is extremely important to keep up to date with your eye tests – at least once every two years or more often if required by your optometrist. If you

haven’t already, now might be a good time to book in your eye test before you go away for summer.

2. Driving in bright sunshine

Polarised lenses are a good option for driving during summer months as they eliminate glare from horizontal surfaces, such as roads, water and sand. They also o er 100% UV protection, improve contrast and help ease the strain on your eyes, so they are particularly good for driving in bright conditions. Polarised lenses can sometimes a ect the viewing of LCD displays, so that is something to bear in mind when wearing them.

3. Dry air

During the summer the air is hot and dry which can be bad for our eyes, but there are some things we can do to reduce this issue. One thing drivers can do is make sure vents are angled in such a way that cool air is not blowing into the face, as this can dry out eyes. Also make sure to blink regularly, which sounds obvious, but blinking is the way we naturally refresh the surface of our eyes with uid, preventing dryness. When we are very focused and attentive on something (such as driving), our

tendency is to blink less.

4. Think about the right lenses

Glasses wearers may bene t from having their lenses coated with Specsavers UltraClear SuperClean – an anti-re ection and scratch-resistant treatment. It also has the added bene ts of being water-repellent, smudgeresistant and anti-static. This means that lenses reduce re ections and dazzle caused by headlights and streetlamps, attract less dust, stay cleaner for longer and are easier to clean, which helps while driving day or night. For contact lens wearers, it’s recommended to also carry glasses with you in the car, to ensure there is always a back-up in the event of running low on lenses or solution.

Chantelle Hayward, director of Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe says: ‘While we all want to rush o to enjoy our summer holidays, it is important we’re staying safe and having good eyesight is one of the most basic requirements of safe driving. It means drivers will be able to spot potential dangers, see pedestrians and other vehicles, read road signs and judge speed, distance

and movement. Without this, there can be catastrophic consequences on the road.

‘During the summer months, drivers are struggling with high temperatures which can make it di cult to concentrate, as well as causing fatigue and glare due to the bright sunlight, which can make it more challenging to see clearly. Navigating the increased tra c or tourists who aren’t familiar with

driving in Spain can be tough, so before you take to the road this summer make sure you have an up-to-date eye test to ensure that you can see clearly on the road. For those who do wear glasses, it is also important to ensure that their lenses are suitable for driving too.’ While the number of road tra c accidents has decreased by 80% in the last 30 years, it is clear summer is still a time when extra care needs to be taken.

Liverpool ‘prepare opening bid’ for £50m-rated Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia

Lavia, 19, came through the academy ranks at Anderlecht and Manchester City.

He only joined Southampton last summer but they then su ered relegation.

Liverpool will reportedly make the opening o er for a player valued at £50m.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing an opening o er for Southampton mid elder Romeo Lavia - who has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Saints value the Belgian defensive mid elder, 19, at around £50million.

Lavia came through the academy ranks at Anderlecht and Manchester City before signing for Southampton last summer.

He made 34 appearances in all competitions for the St Mary’s club during his rst season but wasn’t able to save them from relegation out of the Premier League.

talkSPORT now report that Liverpool are trying to steal a march on their rivals by making an opening bid for Lavia.

They say Chelsea’s co-director of

recruitment and talent Joe Shields, who joined them from Southampton, recommended Lavia to incoming coach Mauricio Pochettino.

But the Blues are believed to be looking at other targets to strengthen their mid eld.

Manchester City have a buy-back option on the Belgian but that doesn’t come into e ect until next summer.

However, City did insert a clause in the deal entitling them to 20 per cent of any future sale, netting them £10m if someone matched Saints’ asking price.

Arsenal have also been linked with Lavia but they have prioritised the signing of Declan Rice from West Ham in that position.

Overhauling mid eld was the priority for Jurgen Klopp this summer and so far they have brought in two attack-minded players.

Alexis Mac Allister, the Argentine World Cup winner, joined from Brighton for £35m, while on Sunday they con rmed the £60m arrival of Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.

Imanyo Golf Society ASPAS Cup, Sponsored by Frutas ASPAS

This was the second competition for sponsor Frutas ASPAS from Daya Nueva. We had 30 players travel to El Plantio, the weather was hot at 35 degrees and very humid so plenty of uids was the order of the day. The course was in excellent condition from tee boxes to the greens although some of the bunkers needed sand and a bit of maintenance around the skirts.

The format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups with a winner from each group, one being the overall winner.

The winner of the Frutas ASPAS Cup, eventually on count back, came from group B was Steve Gain with another handicap cutting score of 40 points, runner up in group B

also on count back was “Sat Nav

“Steve Day with 36 points and third place went to “PAW” Derry Quinlan also with 36 points.

Winner from group A also on a handicapping score was “Bob the Builder” John Fairbrass with 40 points, runner up was Alan Martin with 37 points and third place went to “Dos Fairways”

Chris Darling with 36 points. All 6 nearest the pins were won, group A holes 7 and 10 “Dos Fairways” Chris Darling, hole

12 Alan Martin, group B, only two were won holes 6 and 18

“Hammer” Gary Smith. Best

Front 9 was won by “Hammer”

Gary Smith with 19 points and best back 9 was won by “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 21 points. The two’s pot was not

won so will be €45 for the next game. There was a doubles match play Steve Ayre & Steve Mathers V Tom Goulden & Mo Chaplin which ended all square so a replay is needed.

The football card was won by Paul Davison with Derby winning €40, and making €40 for this 2023’s chosen charities 2023.

We would like to thank Antonio, and sta at Imanyo’s for the good food and great hospitality.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 27th of June we made the short journey across the border to sh the Rio Segura at Murcia town centre. The river has been out of sorts latley but things seem to have improved over recent weeks and the weights re ected in this improvement. The match was shed in very hot humid conditions with temperatures in the low thirties. We decided to sh the match in two sections with 5 pegs either side of the rst road bridge. Winner on the day at the end of the reeds on peg 2 was Bil Cannon. Bill shed the method feeder across with pellets, corn or wafters and weighed a very

decemny 18.52kg.

In second place making a welcome return after his long lay o with illness was Richard King. He drew his usual peg, peg 1 before the reeds and again used similar tactics and weighed 16.2kg.

In third place was myself Ian Brown. I was draw on the end peg 10 towards the Crystal bridge but along with Richard wood on peg 5 we were severly disruped by the rowing team. The rowers seem to be training for some sort of comeptition and made the start line complete with Bouys in the middel of the river directly in front of mine and Richards pegs. This caused me to loose at least 4 sh around the

bouy and made landing sh extremly di cult. I shed the methoid feeder across with either corn or maggot and weighed 11.96kgbut lost at least 8 sh.

Rod N Reels

The following day we returned to the El Bosquet complex and shed pegs a1 to 7. Winner from peg 1 was our Belgian raider Max. He shed the pole in the deep water across with crushed sweetcorn as groundbait and a single grain of corn on the hook. Max had a big problem with mlet and lost around 20 sh mainly foul hooked, He did though manage to land some decent carp and weighed

18.88kg.

In second place was myself Ian Brown. I was drawn on peg b1 and after struggling for long spelles eventually caught tight across on the jigger with maggot for 16.92kg.

Vinny Smith took third place from peg 6 with 16.52kg. Vinny also lost lots of sh and rigs whilst shing maggot across on the pole.
