Beach bar protest as summer service remains uncertain Around 200 workers protested in front of the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca recently in response to the early closure of the beach bars and the facilities they provided to the local community and holidaymakers.

T

he demonstrators called for the immediate restoration of jobs on the beaches and the resumption of the beach services until the new contract is awarded. The workers feel they are being punished due to the ‘evident mismanagement by the Orihuela town council which was caused by a misinterpretation of the contract for the concession of beach services in Orihuela Costa’. On the placards they carried the workers claim they are the solution to the provision of the services on the beach of Orihuela - which includes: beach bars, toilets, umbrella and sunbeds, recreational and nautical activities - because they want to work and provide these services for people. In a statement issued by the local workers group said: “The absence of these services is causing significant damage for

residents, tourists and businessmen in the area, apart from bringing about the loss of more than 100 jobs that were covered by the concessionaire company. “In addition, the decision taken by the town council endangers the launching of

financial loss for the town and it would be a serious blow for tourism, which is the economic engine of the area.” The protest came hot on the heels of a press conference held in Orihuela City where Councillor Luisa Bone announced that there

such services on the beaches of Orihuela cost in the summer of 2018, since the time required by the new award process leaves the new awarded company without enough time to develop the service. Consequently, this will generate a huge

is still no certainty that the beach bars and services will be in place for Summer 2018. The councillor said that Orihuela Council approved the specifications for the seasonal beach services contract, which includes the beach bars.

The councillor alongside her colleague Francisco Sáez explained that the specifications include the beach bars, sunshades, hammocks, pedalos, water sport boards and jet skis. This new contract increases the amount the company must pay the Town Hall from €300,000 to €500,000 per year and it has a duration of four years, and can be extended by another two. They explained the municipal secretary ruled it did not qualify to be considered urgent because the change of contract was foreseeable, so the Town Hall could not give a day when the beach services might reopen,“because it depends on the process and the companies that make offers”, said Boné, although they hope it will all be ready for the summer. She noted the design for the beach bars, toilets and pergolas will be similar to the lifeguard huts “to improve the image of the beaches and homogenise all the installations”. These will not be ready until 2019 so for the 2018 season the winning company can use whatever they propose as long as the Town Hall approves. The specifications require 11 beach bars

and 9 toilets each with men’s, women’s and disabled rooms. There will also have to be another 9 disabled toilets on the Blue Flag beaches. Each beach bar must have a defibrillator and the workers must be trained to use them. Boné explained the space allowed for sunshades and hammocks at Cala Bosque (La Zenia) will be reduced from 800m2 to 520m2. Sáez said that from Friday companies had been given 20 days to present their offers and then the evaluation can begin. He also said three municipal technicians will supervise the contract, the finalisation date is December 31st 2021, and 55 percent of the evaluation criteria are objective and 45 percent subjective. Finally he thanked the technicians“for working so quickly to get the specifications ready in record time”.

BITE SIZE More water for Torrevieja NEWS: A map of the sea around Alicante is due to be updated. Two of those responsible for reviewing and updating the cartography of the local waters visited the town hall on 26th April. The Naval Commander of Alicante, Gustavo Adolfo Gutiérrez de Rubalcaba and his colleague explained to the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, about their task and what it entails. The idea is to provide a more detailed and up-to-date chart for those out at sea to ensure they use the safest routes. These charts can also be useful for sports and recreational use. It’s not just what you can see on the surface that they will be recording. They also identify the type of seabed, the position of algae and make other reports. It is expected that their work will continue until May 18th. As is traditional, the mayor gave the Commander a salt ship to remind him of his visit to Torrevieja.

Torrevieja hosts national swimming competition The competition for the disabled was held on April 28th at the Palacio de los Deportes. Those taking part included 160 athletes representing clubs and federations across Spain. The morning session took place at 10 am and 46 different competitions were held altogether. Some of these are Olympic events but not all of them. Continued on page 5

The production of desalination water for human consumption is a government priority and 2.1 million euros has been set aside to increase the amount provided by both the Torrevieja plant and one located in San Pedro. Currently 60% of the water that comes out of the taps in Alicante and Elche comes from desalinated resources and most from Torrevieja’s coast. However, improvements to the capacity of the plant are not without their environmental impact too. The laying of the cable means that the established and ancient trees bordering the cemetery have to be removed. A situation that has caused much consternation amongst those who have grown up with these familiar landmarks on their doorstep. Suzanne O’Connell

Madeleine suspect ‘tried to kidnap Galicia sisters’ in 2001 A family from Galicia says a man identical to the photo-fit image of Madeleine McCann's suspected kidnapper attempted to abduct their little girl six years earlier. A 'robot' image of a man seen in the aparthotel in Praia da Luz was released five years ago, but it is only now that the family has revealed they 'nearly choked on their dinner' when they saw the picture on TV. “I don't know if the man in the photo kidnapped Madeleine, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the man who tried to run off with my daughter,” said businessman Andrés. He and his wife and two daughters, aged 13 and five at the time, were on a road trip and stopped for the night en route at a modest hotel in Abrantes (Portugal). “On our way back from dinner, we came across an English lounge [sic] and saw a man dressed like a typical 'gentleman', who commented in

Portuguese on how beautiful the ‘little girls’ were. The family checked into two interconnected rooms and later the elder daughter rang Andrés' mobile and then started to scream because the 'English' man came into the room. Andrés ran to his daughters' room to calm them down, but suspected the man would try again, so he hid behind the door – and caught him three minutes later. When asked what he was doing, the man answered that he had 'come to see if the girls were tucked in'. “To this day, I don't know how he got away from me – he slipped away like an eel,” Andrés laments. Andrés has made statements to the National Police in Spain, Scotland Yard in London. Chillingly, Andres’ youngest daughter in 2001 bore a strong resemblance to missing Madeleine. “They're identical, aren't they?” said Andrés showing a picture.

A 13 kilometre re-wiring project will increase the power available to the desalination plant in Torrevieja, enabling it to produce more water. The work is currently taking place in the area bordering the cemetery in Torrevieja where the underground electricity network passes. The work will double the capacity of the desalination plant which is focusing on producing water for both irrigation purposes and human consumption. The desalination plant in Torrevieja is the largest in Europe and the expansion work is being carried out by Red Eléctrica de España. The additional electricity is needed to allow the plant to reach its maximum production capacity and improve its reliability. An electricity substation has already been built and now it’s a case of linking the two together.

BITE SIZE NEWS: Gang arrested in Crevillent Continued from page 3

The championship is one way in which those hoping to take part in the Paralympics can accrue points towards qualification. Swimming is one of the sports which has more Spanish representatives in the Paralympic games. It is seen as being a good way to promote participation across different disabilities. It was also the first time that a club from Torrevieja itself took part. The Torrevieja Adapted Sports Club entered 16 of their swimmers in the competition.

Day of street dance Saturday 28th April saw the Paseo Vista Alegre busy with people waiting to see their favourite Torrevieja dance schools perform. This is now an annual event that takes place on a sea front location in the town without the benefit of a stage. Different schools are asked to take part and their supporters crowd around the perimeter of the make shift dancing area to try and get a good view. It’s a fun event if a little frustrating for those who struggle to see the performers over the heads of others. Celebration of dance wasn’t confined to the streets, however. There were also performances in the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre and workshops and demonstrations at other venues. The street dancing or ‘Danza a Pie de Calle’ provides an opportunity for all the dance academies to perform. All the activities organised were for free.

A gang who had kidnapped three people and hidden them in a makeshift dungeon have been arrested and charged with attempted murder. The Guardia Civil arrested the four Spanish men, aged between 23 and 51 years old who are believed to be members of a dangerous criminal organisation operating in the locality. The men are being charged with the three crimes of illegal detention, an attempted murder, three charges of threatening behaviour, four of causing actual bodily harm, one robbery with violence, one crime of drug trafficking, one of possession of weapons and another of belonging to a criminal group. The sale of drugs was at the heart of the gang’s activities, specifically cocaine and heroin. Those people kept in the dungeon were forced to sell drugs on behalf of the gang who also made sure that a distance was kept between their own homes and their illegal activities. The activities took place from a small house in Crevillente which had a bricked up room of only 10 square meters, secured by concrete blocks and a metal

Environment Department tackles mosquitoes across Orihuela The Department of Environment, headed by Councillor Miguel Ángel Fernández, has announced the schedule to control certain pest that plague residents and visitors at this time of year, particularly adult mosquitoes and chironomids, or biting midges as they are better known, across the municipality.

New talks organised The town council of Torrevieja continues to arrange talks and discussion surrounding the natural parks of La Mata and Torrevieja. The latest schedule of talks was announced on April 27th by Councillor Fanny Serrano. It includes on Friday May 11th in the La Mata town hall a presentation about ‘Heritage in the 21st century’. On Friday May 18th, again in La Mata, there will be a talk about sustainable salt production. On May 25th in La Mata there will be a talk entitled ‘From Environmental Heritage to Sustainable Tourism.’ The talks reflect the town hall’s interest in ensuring that Torrevieja is recognised not only for its sea front location but also for its natural areas including the salt lakes and their associated industries.

Dead dolphin washed ashore A dead, bottlenose dolphin was washed up in one of Torrevieja’s bays and its body brought to shore by boat. People living in the area alerted the town hall when they saw the body washed up in the rocks. It measured 2.20 metres long and it is unclear exactly when it died. The body of the dolphin was brought onto the sand at Los Locos beach and it is believed that it died of natural causes and was brought to shore due to the recent storms. The presence of bottlenose dolphins in the waters along the coast of Alicante is not unusual.

More palm trees bite the dust Three more palm trees have had to be cut down in Torrevieja town centre. The trees, located in the Waldo Calero Square, were a popular feature. However, firefighters were called out to Continued on page 6

grill. It was through this grill that the sale of drugs took place. Those involved in selling the drugs were people who owed them money and were forced to take part in the activity until their debts were paid. These people were then forced to live in humiliating conditions for between three days and up to three weeks with no running water or proper toilet facilities. They were given a mobile by their kidnappers in order to take calls from those wanting the drugs which they would then supply from the premises. They were repeatedly assaulted by their captors who intimidated them with threats to their relatives. It was a difficult task to find the gang as they repeatedly changed their location to avoid detection. They were already wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a young Moroccan man who they beat, tried to run over and even attempted to shoot. Finally the gang were tracked down and a number of illegal substances were seized. They are all now detained and will remain in custody without bail. Suzanne O’Connell

"The company awarded the service contract for pest control performs a periodic monitoring of more than a hundred focus points, applying fully biological insecticide treatments," said the councillor, "in which its use is authorised in sensitive environments such as Barranco de las Estacas in Orihuela Costa or in the stretches with stagnant water from the Segura. "

These actions are focused on avoiding the appearance of adult specimens by eliminating the larva detected at this time of the year, with the increase in temperatures. This reduces the biological cycle of these insects, specifically the part that develops in stagnant waters. In the same way, the frequent rainfall, the variation of the flow of the river, crop irrigation which is spaced in time and the cleaning of streets, all of which results in the accumulation of water in scuppers and drains in the streets, also encourages the proliferation of these insects. The Councillor also reported that in a pioneering initiative the Valencian Community "has also installed shelter boxes for bats and nesting swallows, in order to promote the biological control of these animals in the vicinity of the River Segura on its path through Orihuela.” Miguel Fernandez also made a call for citizen collaboration and asked people to make the department aware if they come across any areas with large accumulations of stagnant water and a large number of mosquito, adding that "any citizen can report this to the Department of Environment through the app "Orihuela in your hand" or through the website: www.orihuela.es

cut down the trees due to concerns that they might collapse in high winds if they were not brought down manually. The tree roots still remain, however, as evidence that they were once there. There is increasing concern that the palm trees are gradually disappearing from the Torrevieja skyline and that there is no move at present to replace any of them.

La Mata market to move – it’s final The proposed move of the market in La Mata from its current location is to go ahead. Its new location will be in the streets Avenida de Francia and between the avenidas Daneses, los Suecos and Avenida de Inglaterra. The proposal by Torrevieja town hall has now been agreed by the regional government and as such will go ahead once the market traders have all been informed and the signage is in place. The market is being moved because part of the car park and passage of cars is over the Canal Acequión and is not considered to be adequate for the load it sometimes has to take. Not everyone is happy about the new location of this popular Wednesday market. Some people feel that there is no real need for the market to move at all and others that there are alternative, preferable locations. There is no date, as yet, to indicate exactly when the move will take place.

Help at Home Costa Blanca and CLARO are currently running a petition to get the Emergency services Centre for the Orihuela Costa up and running. Volunteers are working their way around the coast asking for signatures. You may see them at local markets, outside the Town Hall in Playa Flamenca, at busy venues such as The Emerald Isle. Nine years have elapsed since the announcement of the Centres construction. This is an appalling delay that affects the security of a tax-paying population of about 40,000 increasing

will. The end result is that the project is within a year of losing the essential subsidy that will finance its completion. The centre would include in its 5000 square metres, all the basic emergency services for a major population: a local police station open 24 hours and not as now 8 hours while the Playa Flamenca municipal offices are open and the rest of the day a service provided through the mobile phone of a police patrol car; plus an ambulance service, fire station, civil protection unit, national police and Guardia Civil.

to more than 150,000 in peak tourists seasons. Since construction was first announced in 2009, this vital infrastructure has been paralysed because of a lack of political interest by the Orihuela municipal government, combined with the difficulties associated with successive governments in Valencia. Excuses have ranged from bankruptcy of the builder to budgetary and planning issues. All easily overcome with the right political

This would amount to a comprehensive set of services that would result in a major improvement in the safety and quality of life of those living in Orihuela Costa. All residents, groups and interested associations are invited to take part in the petition and urge the Government of Orihuela to press the Generalitat of Valencia to resume and Complete the Emergency Services Centre of Orihuela Costa.

Fibromyalgia awareness raising From the 7th to 13th May it’s Fibromyalgia awareness week. The events of the week were presented at a press conference by Councillor Carmen Morate with Maite Miralles and Juncal Macho who are president and secretary of ASIMEPP (Asociación de Salud Integral, Mejoras Psícofísicas and Psicosociales in Torrevieja). This is the third time that such an event has been organised. Fibromyalgia day is on 12th May and awareness raising is being supported by the town hall in Torrevieja. ‘It’s to give voice during these kinds of events to the people who suffer from chronic illnesses and pain like fibromyalgia,’ announced Councillor Morate. Everyone is invited to take part in the organised activitieswhich include an open day, yoga workshops and Taichi at the Hombre del Mar on the 12th May at 11am. A manifesto will also be read and there will be three conferences by University professors looking at various aspects of the disease. On Friday 11th May there will be a talk in the indoor market about how to improve your eating habits to tackle the condition. At 8.30 pm on 11th May an award will be presented to an individual for their collaboration and support in addressing the issues surrounding the condition. The week’s awareness raising will conclude on May 13th with Tibetan sound therapy in the Centro de la Tercera Edad in Calle San Pascual at 11am. Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. People suffering from the disease may also find that they are extremely tired, have muscle stiffness and experience difficulty sleeping. They may also have problems with memory and concentration and frequently suffer from headaches and IBS.

Although treatment is available for some of these symptoms they are unlikely to disappear completely. The exact causes of the syndrome are unknown but it is thought to be linked to abnormal levels of some chemicals in the brain. It is believed that some people are more likely to develop it due to the genes inherited from their parents. The condition can also be triggered by a stressful event. Fibromyalgia affects more women than men and typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50 although it can occur in people of any age including children and the elderly. Estimates suggest that between one to 20 people may be affected to some

extent. It is a difficult condition to diagnose as there are no specific tests for the condition and the symptoms mimic other conditions too. Suzanne O’Connell

Community worker patches up the town hall The town hall resorted to unpaid labour to make good a job half-done by a contracted business. The worker, who is required to do jobs for free as a sanction for financial irregularities, could be seen plastering over the brick work at the entrance to the town hall, covering an eyesore that’s been there for over a year. The local ‘bricky’ tidied up the unfinished business in less than three and a half hours. A job that had been abandoned by the contractors who had been given restoration work for this and in other parts of the town hall. The work was left incomplete at the beginning of 2017. The deployment of a volunteer was not without its problems however. It was reported in Informacion that the worker who had been asked to do the job on

behalf of the council was then asked to stop by another department. However, the work was finally completed if without the additional stone façade that was part of the original plan. The use of the worker, called a TBC (Trabajos en Beneficio a la Comunidad) means that there is no cost to the public purse. The work was supposed to be part of a project to expand the town hall. An area of land next to the town hall is part of this project which is hoped to lead to a better use of space and make the town hall more efficient. Problems have consistently plagued the project which has seen the work abandoned and disputes continue over the contract. Suzanne O’Connell

Cemetery trees dilemma The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón held a meeting on 24th April with the councillor for the environment, Fanny Serrano and a technician for the environment to discuss two trees that are located in the cemetery next to the N332. The concern is surrounding planned works that will affect a eucalyptus tree that is estimated to be a hundred years old, a pine tree and an olive tree all positioned at the entrance to the cemetery. During the meeting those participating discussed various possible solutions to protect the trees in the light of the planned work by Iberdrola whilst increasing the electricity capacity of the desalination plant. Concerns were particularly raised about the preservation of the eucalyptus tree both because of its sentimental value as well as its actual worth as a species. There are a number of considerations to the fate of the trees that are having to be applied. These include the requirements for water and sewage connections as well as proximity of the trees to the road. One of the options being considered is digging up the eucalyptus tree and moving it to a new position. The issue of whether it was likely to survive the move or not was discussed. In order to clarify what the impact may be the town hall is due to talk to experts in the field. Iberdrola has offered compensation for any damage caused and to plant more trees in other places. ‘However, we do understand that this tree has a special place in the hearts of the people of Torrevieja,’ explained a representative. The concerns need to be balanced against the potential benefits to the town of improved facilities at the desalination works. Suzanne O’Connell

Spain accuses CaixaBank of laundering Chinese money Spanish authorities announced that they have pressed charges against CaixaBank, the nation's third largest lender, for breaching money laundering laws by turning a blind eye to dubious transfers by Chinese companies. The prosecutor tasked with investigating suspected money laundering by China's state-owned ICBC bank, which has a partnership with CaixaBank, said the Spanish bank suffered from "serious malfunctions in its systems to prevent money laundering." Spanish authorities wrote to CaixaBank to signal suspicious behavior by nearly 200 clients between 2013 and 2015. The clients made large deposits in cash in branch offices, then transferred it to Hong Kong and China, totalling nearly 100 million euros (around $120 million). The authorities believe that firms

fraudulently imported goods to sell them on the black market, and then deposited the cash earned to send to China. The prosecutor said the branches ignored the warnings and allowed front-men to open accounts into which millions in cash were deposited, with the funds usually being transferred to China within two or three days after being deposited. When contacted by AFP, CaixaBank denied "any type of collaboration or participation in suspected money launding crimes by Chinese citizens" and insisted that it respected regulations aimed at preventing money laundering at all times. Last month the US Federal Reserve warned ICBC, the world's largest lender, to boost its money laundering safeguards.

Death will be ‘optional’ and Local eyesore threatened with fine ageing ‘curable’ by 2045 The owner of a plot of land situated by the town’s bus station has been told to fence it off and sort it out or risk a fine of €138,000. This area, of what looks like abandoned land, is one of the first views of Torrevieja that greets people as they get off the buses and it’s not a good one. It’s a huge area of land with a gaping hole and no fence to secure it. It is an eyesore and potentially a danger too and now the town hall want something done about it. The lack of a pavement around it means that those passing by have to walk out into the road. The area was designated to be a shopping centre but due to disagreements about the use of the land was abandoned in 2007. Since then it has remained unused and the owner of the land has failed to replace pavements surrounding it or fence the area off. It is believed that requests continue to be made to build a hotel and three-

storey parking on the site. As always the underlying problem would seem to be an administrative one. The company who own the land say that they had an agreement with the previous administration to maintain a metal fence until building work could start again. However, a demand was served by the town hall in March 2017 that there must be a perimeter wall erected or otherwise a fine would be applied. The situation has become more acute because of the recent bad weather and winds. Fire fighters were called in last weekend to secure stretches of the fence that had collapsed due to the bad weather. The Local Police were also called in to help and had to secure what remains of pedestrian access on the side of the main road. Suzanne O’Connell

Dying will be 'optional' within just 27 years and the ageing process will be 'reversible', according to two genetic engineers during the presentation of their new book in Barcelona. José Luis Cordeiro, born in Venezuela to Spanish parents, and Cambridge (UK) mathematician David Wood, founders of the operating system 'Symbian', have just published The Death of Death and say immortality is a real and scientific possibility that could come much earlier than originally thought. Humans will only die in accidents, never of natural causes or illness, by around the year 2045, say Cordeiro and Wood, who say it is 'crucial' that old age starts to be classified as an 'illness' so that publiclyfunded research into its 'cure' can extend. Nanotechnology is key, among other new genetic manipulation techniques, the engineers said during the presentation at Barcelona's Equestrian Circle. The process will involve turning 'bad' genes into healthy ones, eliminating dead cells from the body, repairing damaged cells, treatments with stem cells and 'printing' vital organs in 3D. Cordeiro, who is based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA, says he has 'chosen not to die' and that in 30 years' time, he will be 'younger than he is today'. Ageing is the result of DNA 'tails', known as 'telomeres', in chromosomes – of which every cell except red blood and sex cells has 23 pairs – becoming shorter, and reversing ageing involves lengthening the telomeres. Telomeres become damaged and

shortened with the passage of time, a process that speeds up in the event of toxins entering the body – smoking, alcohol and air pollution are among elements that reduce the length of telomeres, thus accelerating ageing. Cordeiro and Wood believe that within 10 years, illnesses such as cancer will be curable, and that major international corporations such as Google will be 'entering the field of medicine' because they are 'beginning to realise that curing ageing is possible'. Microsoft has reportedly already announced the setting up of a cryopreservation centre in which a scientist is researching the possibility of cancer being completely curable within a decade. The engineers explain that, although 'people generally do not know about it', it was discovered in 1951 how cancer cells are immortal: when Henrietta Lacks died from cervical cancer, surgeons removed the tumour and kept it – and it is still 'alive' today. Immortality will not necessarily mean the planet becomes overcrowded, the scientists say: there is still plenty of room for more people on Earth, and these days, people do not have anywhere near as many children as they did in past decades and centuries; plus, 'it will be possible to live in space by then'. “Japan and the Koreas, if they continue with their current trend of hardly having any children, will become extinct – within two centuries, there'll be no Japanese or Korean people on the planet,” Cordeiro says. “But thanks to these new techniques,

there will indeed be Japanese and Korean people, because they'll live forever and remain young.” The cost of anti-ageing treatment was compared to that of the latest SmartPhones. “At first, it'll be expensive, but with a competitive market the price will gradually fall because it'll be something that benefits everyone,” Cordeiro says. “Technology, when it's new, is poor and extremely expensive, but it eventually becomes democratic and mainstream and becomes cheaper.”

Illegal research The engineers say they have already been employing their techniques for two years – illegally, but in Colombia where there are fewer regulations covering genetic manipulation. Elisabeth Parrish, their first human patient, 'started to see symptoms of ageing and asked what could be done to prevent it'. Her treatment is 'very risky and even illegal', Wood explains, but at the moment is going well, has not had any adverse sideeffects, and the level of telomeres in her blood is '20 years younger than before'. “I want Spain to have a place in the world of these technologies and show that we're not mad, it's just that people still don't know about them,”Wood concluded. The Death of Death will eventually be published in four languages at first – Spanish, English, Portuguese and Korean – and all proceeds from its sales will be ploughed back into the authors' research.

Los Pistoleros present donations On 28th April if you were planning on treating yourself to a meal of fish and chips you might have had a bit of a surprise when you got there. The main dining hall at Quesada Fish and Chips was not populated with its usual Saturday night diners but resembled what could only be described as a Wild West scene. Outlaws and saloon girls, preachers and Texas Rangers, Los Pistoleros were out in force for their annual presentation of charity donations. Los Pistoleros are a ‘westerner’ club and they re-enact scenes with traditional western themes across the year at fiestas and at other events they are invited to. They certainly know how to enjoy themselves too with the dance floor filled with line dancers moving in unison. This year Los Pistoleros had chosen four worthy causes to received the money that had been collecting throughout the year. Following the meal, Reach Out were presented with a cheque for €500, AECC €500. Butterfly Children €500 and San José Obrero Orphanage in Orhuela €1,000. Los Pistoleros are well known for their fundraising. In 2014 they won the Costa Blanca People’s Pride of Spain award for ‘Fundraisers of the Year’. Every year they decide on which charities to support at their AGM that this year was held on 3rd April. ‘We don’t keep any money for expenses or for anything else,’ explained Marshall Brian Williams, otherwise known as ‘Stumpy’. ‘All the money goes to the charities we decide on at the meeting.’ Los Pistoleros continue to be a thriving organisation. First started in 2009 they have raised a total of €16,000 during their years of entertaining others and, of course, having a little fun themselves. The scenery and clothes that accompany any

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Sterling lost three quarters of a US cent and a third of a Swiss cent on Monday but elsewhere the pound was higher, with a daily average gain of 0.3%.The positive growth continued into Tuesday when it topped the major currency rankings for the first time in more than a week. The pound's gains averaged 0.4%; it took a quarter of a cent each off the euro and the US dollar. The reasons for this aren’t clear, but on the borrowing front, the government made a net repayment of £300m in March. For the financial year 2017-18 as a whole public sector borrowing amounted to £42.6bn, nearly three billion less than the chancellor predicted in last month's Spring Statement. The CBI survey found industrial orders and selling prices in April behaving similarly to the previous month while optimism faded from 13 to -4. The CBI's Distributive Trades Survey a balance of -2 per cent, compared to expectations of 16 per cent growth. High street sales were flat in the year to April, and while 31% of retailers said sales were up in April, 33% said they declined. April also saw consumer confidence fall from a 10-month high according to the Gfk index. The main

index fell back to -9 in the month, down from -7 in March and there was also a fall in the measure of the public’s expectations for their personal financial situation over the next 12 months, which fell from 10 to 4, suggesting people are feeling less confident, despite the decline in inflation and wages that the Bank of England expects to underpin spending. On Thursday, Mario Draghi released the April statement from the ECB and it was more of the same, which didn’t help the euro. The ECB's official monetary policy statement and actual policy settings remained unchanged, while ECB President Mario Draghi shrugged-off growth momentum fears but ultimately gave traders little reason to bid the Euro higher. Any loss of growth momentum in the Eurozone at the start of 2018 was observed as a temporary phenomenon due to "bad weather, strikes and the timing of Easter," and the focus was on the broader themes of regional growth and convergence with more normal levels of inflation in the medium-term - at or just below the ECB's target of 2.0%.

Hedges are more eco-friendly, providing colour and habitat for birds and bees. Whilst they give just as much privacy and protection from the wind, they don’t make you feel imprisoned, but rather close to nature. Another plus is that they change according to season, often creating all year interest.

The Apricot - (Prunus armeniaca) - named because it is believed that they originated in Armenia. They have also been grown in Iran for many centuries and dried, which is a favourite way of eating them for the locals. The Apricot tree generally is small and only grows to a height of around 39 feet tall (maximum) and the trunk is about 16 inches in diameter. You can have many or just the one as they do not need other trees for pollination - they can do it themselves! When you plant your tree make sure you cover over the base and roots with soil, patting it down as you go along, as with most other plants/trees. They bloom earlier than most other fruits, so if there is an early frost, be careful of them, plant on a higher part of soil in your garden if at all possible. If your apricot tree gets frost on it and there are flowers, it will kill these off and therefore the tree will produce hardly any fruit at all if any. The fruit has one central stone to it with the seed inside this, for replanting, if you want to start from scratch!

It would possibly be better to plant it in September, before the autumn, so that it has long enough to take root before the winter comes along. They neither like the extreme cold nor heat, so don’t put it in an area all on it’s own, have other things growing around it to protect it. If you want to have large fruit on your tree you need to pick them as they grow to keep them apart from one another - about two inches apart should do the trick. A beautiful plant that should be showing off at the moment is from the Asteraceae family and is known as the Rhodanthemum catananche. Its flowers have peach coloured petals with silvery leaves and are blooming right now and will go through to the summer too. I have seen them on the side of the roads and they are glorious. They are quite hardy as originated from the Atlas mountain range of Morocco and Algeria, so can withstand our winter season as well as the summer. It normally blooms in early May but of course this depends on the weather and it can either come a few weeks earlier or later. Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO ALCOY with Vivalia Travel Alcoy or Alcoi is an industrial and university city, region and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain. The Serpis river crosses the municipal boundary of Alcoi. The local authority reported a population of 95,526 residents in 2010.

History The first traces of human presence in the area date to c. 60,000 years ago, when Neandertal hunters settled here. A site with rock paintings, dating to c. 10,000/6,500 years ago, has been discovered near la Sarga. From around the mid-3rd millennium BC people started to move from the caves to the plain where cereals were grown, while mountain fortifications were erected After the Roman conquest of the Iberians, several rural villas were built in the area, as well as a necropolis. The town was established in 1256 by James I of Aragon, with the construction of a castle on a strategic position over the Serpis river, to secure the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Valencia during the Reconquista. In 1291 the town was donated by King James II of Aragon to the Sicilian admiral Roger of Lauria; it will not return a royal possession until 1430. During the War of Spanish Succession, Alcoi sided for the cause of archduke Charles, and was therefore besieged and stripped of numerous privileges, which started a period of decline In 1873 the workers of Alcoy revolted in the Petroleum Revolution. Main sights Many outdoor rock paintings exist in Alcoi, and there are some ruins of an Iberian settlement with fragments of Greco-Roman pottery. • Casa del Pavo (Turkey's house), Art Nouveau work of Vicente Pascual Pastor, (1909). • Circulo Industrial de Alcoy, Art Nouveau work of Timoteo Briet Montaud, (1909-1911). • Casa Briet, Art Nouveau work of Timoteo Briet Montaud, • Llonja de Sant Jordi, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Made during the

years 1992-1995. • San Jorge Bridge, of art déco style, is considered to be the most popular image of the city. • De Dins Square, a neoclassical square in the city center of Alcoy. • Iglesia arciprestal de Santa María (Alcoy), in Valencian Baroque style. • Hermitage of St. Anthony the Abbot • Torre de Na Valora, a watchtower from the 13th century. • Barchell Castle (13th century), of likely Muslim origin. It has a rectangular keep and a court with a rainwater tank. Museums Museu Alcoià de la Festa, museum dedicated to the Moors and Christians of Alcoy, where the visitors can experience all the details, aspects and feelings surrounding this internacional festival. • Archaeological Museum Camil Visedo, established in 1945. • Shelter of Cervantes, a air-raid bunker of the Spanish Civil War (1938). • Firefighters Museum of Alcoy Natural parks • Font Roja Natural Park • Serra Mariola Natural Park Economy Alcoi had an important industry related to textile, paper, food and metal. Furthermore, it had many factories which manufacture matches. Today, Alcoi is the financial, commercial and cultural center in the surrounding area. Celebrations Moors and Christians of Alcoy Alcoy hosts the oldest Cavalcade of Magi in the world. The Jesuset del Miracle is commemorated on the last day of January. The most important touristic celebration is Moros i Cristians, in April.

'Europe's most dangerous' ISIS terrorist financed by husband in Spain The husband of one of Europe's most dangerous and hunted ISIS terrorists has been arrested in Málaga for financing her trip to Syria, National Police say. Fadoua Hassad, 36, originally from Morocco is said to be 'extremely radical' and has made constant references to staging attacks in Spain. She has been actively involved in recruiting women to the self-styled 'Islamic State', also known as DAESH, from the war-torn Middle Eastern country. Her ex-husband, 35, also Moroccan and legally resident in the Costa del Sol capital, reportedly gave her money in instalments to help her get to Syria and join DAESH. Police have been investigating the couple since February 2016 when it was found she had left Spain on a flight to Greece before catching a connection to Turkey. The arrested man sent her money to Turkey and also Italy, and supported her plans to join DAESH in the company of another Jihad terrorist - a 25-yearold Palestinian man - said to be extremely dangerous and whom she had met online. In total, in the last two years, Fadoua has received over €6,000 and had also sent large amounts of money to the Palestinian's family, as well as funding her movements across Europe from her ex-husband's contributions.

The husband is said to have been aware of Fadoua's new relationship and, despite only earning a relatively low wage, managed to send her at least €700 a month between February and June 2016. She is said to have returned to Málaga in July of that year, but four months later went back to Turkey and took steps to cover her tracks - travelling overland to France and then Italy, Greece and the province of Hatay in Turkey which borders Syria and various DAESH and Al-Nushra strongholds. The arrested man, charged with financing terrorism, claimed he did not know where his wife was when he sent her money and that he was only doing so to cover her living costs as she was not earning, but the prosecution considers he was fully aware of her intention of becoming a 'foreign fighter'.

Once in DAESH-controlled territory, Fadoua entered in combat, something which only the most active and dangerous women are allowed to do. Meanwhile, she carried on with her online recruitment, targeting young girls and trying to convince them that Jihad was 'the only way' for a 'good Muslim'. Spain's National Intelligence Centre had her listed, and Europol has been searching for her. Both agencies coordinated searches on two premises, one of them being the ex-husband's Málaga home. Ever since Spain raised its terror alert level to 4 - the highest being 5 - on 26th June, 2015, a total of 234 ISIS members have been arrested at home and abroad, and since the beginning of 2015 as a whole, they have detained 279, both men and women.

Public spirit praised The public spirited action taken by four ex-pats recently when they saw hundreds of plastic bags being blown towards to sea from La Mata Market, has been officially recognised and praised. The thanks came from former Torrevieja Mayor and Deputy Minister for Tourism for Alicante Province, Eduardo Dolan. The incident occurred when all but one of the market stall holders had gone, leaving hundreds of plastic bags from the items sold lying on the road. There were no council refuse carts or municipal employees in the area. The four helpful expats: Eileen and Tony Mayes and Kate and Pete Goodger were in a nearby seafront cafe and saw a whirlwind of plastic bags heading across the sand and towards the sea. They quickly got busy gathering up the bags and managed to fill three large plastic sacks with the rubbish. Sadly there were many bags that they couldn’t stop blowing into the sea. It was also shameful that dozens of passers-by did not bother to help with the clean up, but just sat watching as the four tried to save the situation. Eduardo said he would be asking the councillors several searching as to why no council workers were on hand at the end of the market to clean up the road and remove the litter quickly and professionally. “It is not good enough that the

road was left unattended, especially as it is so close to the sea. We all have a responsibility to clean up and ensure the sea does not get polluted. The market traders pay a fee for the road to be cleaned after the market, so why isn’t it being done?” Tony Mayes commented: “Just a few miles out from La Mata are extensive fish farms. It’s crazy to let all this plastic get into the sea which will not only harm the environment but damage the fish stocks. “The Spanish have a beautiful

country and it’s sad to see it being damaged by litter everywhere, and also by ridiculous huge advertising hoardings, by graffiti and by abandoned buildings left to turn into ruins.” Tony and Eileen live just off the market road in Orihuela Costa. Each week immediately after traders’ vehicles leave, Orihuela council cleaning staff gets to work removing litter and spraying the road. Work apparently sadly lacking in Torrevieja-administered La Mata.

For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper.www.homes4u.es

1. If your home has a driveway in front of the home, be certain that it is clear of clutter, clean and any cracks are filled - If you have a carport, and it's looking dirty, use a pressure washer to freshen the look. 2. Pay extra attention to flooring, lighting, and walls - Consider adding centerpiece plants or flowers to enhance dull entryway tables and eliminate other clutter than often gravitates to flat surface. 3. Make it smell like home - The scent that meets prospective buyers should be pleasant and not overwhelming. 4. Remove toys and anything else that doesn't belong - A tidy home is a welcoming home. On the other hand, a cluttered home gives the impression

that there is a lack of storage and unusable space. 5. Remove all unnecessary furniture to maximize space - Or simply rearrange the furniture to provide a smooth flowing walkway through he room. 6. Repair or replace appliances that are not working or are barely holding on - Everything should work as intended. Buyers (and their agents) pay a lot of attention to detail in kitchens. Any repairs or replacement cost they foresee, multiplies far beyond actual cost because of the added inconvenience to them. 7. Check your curb appeal - Stand across the street from your home and look at the exterior and the garden as if you were planning the buy your home. Buyers will notice smaller details than the homeowner, so use a critical eye or borrow a friend who will be honest with you.

The Hondón Valley RBL Poets Members of The Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion met recently on a very cold, blustery night and commenced the evening by watching Pathé Newsreel footage of the Great Pilgrimage of 1928. This consisted of Veterans from WW1 and War Widows visiting the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate on 8th August. This year two members will represent the Branch for GP 90 (Great Pilgrimage 90 years on), which will be the biggest TRBL

membership event for a generation. Following this video members were entertained by the reading of poems written by members in recognition of World Poetry Day. The poems varied from the emotional –Remembrance. Funny – reflecting on the Branch activities and Thoughtful – looking at the Smartphone and its effect on our lives. Members’ favourite poem was written by Chris Pedley. Each winner was given a notebook in order to write more poems! All the poems will shortly be available on

the Branch website www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/hon don-valley. An Armed Forces background is not necessary to take part in Legion activities so for more information about the Branch events, please contact the secretary on hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.communi ty. For information and assistance enquiries, please ring 676 45 17 80.

A trip to the seaside for Age Concern Volunteers and beneficiaries of Age Concern recently enjoyed a coach trip to Mazarron Port. The weather was perfect with lots of sun and a cool breeze coming off the sea. Mazarron is an attractive port and it was perfect for them to take a stroll along its quayside. The stroll was followed by a break for coffee and a cool drink before returning to the coach for a trip around the town of Mazarron. The coach then headed to Camposol and its surrounding area and the tour finished with a meal at Camposol Golf Club where the group were made very welcome by the staff. After a long and leisurely lunch they boarded the coach and headed back towards La Siesta. Age Concern regularly organise day trips with their members in mind. If you like the sound of this trip, are over fifty and would like to join in with their next one, then you can register your interest at their centre in Calle Paganini, La

Siesta. The centre is open every morning between 10am and 1.30pm and you can find out more about the services, facilities and trips that are available. Age Concern organise a number of events and activities as well as providing information on welfare support and mobility aids. The only criteria is that you must be over the age of 50. They welcome you to come and see how you might benefit from the services they provide, even if you’re not quite ready to use them yet. If you think you might be able to volunteer to help with the organisation, then you’re also very welcome too. Age Concern are a highly respected charity who value their volunteers and are always looking for new recruits to join them. If you think you might be interested please drop into Calle Paganini. EASTENDERS Billy’s birthday gets off to a bad start when Mel angrily confronts him for messing up at work. Seemingly regretting being so harsh, Mel shows a softer side by deciding to organise a surprise birthday party for him. Mel even tries to get Honey to come along, but Billy is furious with her for interfering and gives her a piece of his mind. Later on, Mel and Jack bicker after the day’s events but end up tearing each other’s clothes off. Billy also tries his luck with Honey when they spend the evening with the kids, but is she interested in a reunion? Meanwhile, Kush has surprising news to share as he returns from Dubai, but he holds off from revealing it when he finds out about Vincent leaving Kim. However, Denise is furious when she hears the news from Carmel instead. Elsewhere, the feud between Max and Phil continues as Sharon and Keanu get involved. Also, Woody is jealous of Whitney and Halfway. Halfway is centre of attention at the Queen Vic following the week’s revelations. Later on, Halfway’s eventful week continues when he discovers that the

Carters are throwing him a party with a surprise guest. Meanwhile, Hunter discovers that Mel and Jack have spent the night together, despite her attempts to keep it a secret. Elsewhere, when Donna wants information on her brother’s whereabouts, Kim finally admits that Vincent left her. CORONATION STREET In the flower shop, Mary coaches the two people she has booked to play Seth and Philippa. Over at the Marine Centre, the real Seth and Philippa are sacking Jude after seeing CCTV footage of him setting off the fire alarm. Jude gets back to The Rovers and tells Mary to abandon the plan, but Angie arrives and ushers them all to Number 3 for dinner. Will the meal go to plan? Meanwhile, Toyah spins Peter a yarn about the surrogate being in Tamworth visiting a relative and says she is going to see her. Peter is disappointed she is going alone. When Eva tells the hospital photographer she doesn’t want a photo, Toyah is relieved. Elsewhere, Sally asks Tim to get Geoff over for dinner so they can put him off dating Yasmeen. Tim also invites Dev and Gina, but Sally is aghast when Geoff

arrives with Yasmeen in tow. Also, Beth and Kirk are chuffed when David employs them to walk his dog as well as Eccles. Whilst walking Peanut, David and Eccles, Kirk helps a woman who is having trouble controlling her dog. Impressed, she hires him for dog training sessions. Toyah arrives back in Weatherfield with the baby and Peter is instantly smitten. Simon is unimpressed and tells Leanne that he thinks Toyah has been having an affair.

Meanwhile, Johnny confides in Liz that Jenny has been behaving strangely and Liz urges him to speak to her. When Johnny implies to Jenny that he thinks she might be cheating, how will she react? Elsewhere, when Angie sees Jude is lying on his application for the council job, she offers to help him. Adam offers Angie

more accountancy work and Norris offers Jude a temporary job at The Kabin whilst he waits to get another job. Also, Aidan tells Summer he can't give her a job, but Maria is going to take her shopping with his credit card for a new outfit for the party she is going to. Later, whilst looking after Liam, Aidan spots him admiring his watch. Finally, Josh winds David up about Emma, while Shona confronts David about his new relationship. Simon tells Leanne about the cottage Toyah was renting and about how she covered for him when he was bunking off school. Leanne confronts Toyah, who says the cottage is for a friend who is escaping an abusive relationship. However, Toyah also confides that she does have a secret – Eva is not coming back to Weatherfield. Troubled by her lies, Toyah takes Susie out in the pram, but Aidan notices Toyah’s awkwardness when he stops to say hello to the baby. EMMERDALE Megan tries to contain her secret and wants Graham to keep quiet, but will it be that simple? Meanwhile, Aaron and Robert are both proud to think Liv is dealing with

things as they prepare to leave after their latest visit. However, Steve approaches them and soon Aaron is left concerned. Elsewhere, Charity sabotages a secret meeting. Noah and Joe share some brotherly bonding time at the edge of a quarry, chucking stones into the water. They share their thoughts and it’s emotional as they bond. Noah dares Joe to jump off the edge and Joe impulsively does it. However, when Joe doesn’t resurface, Noah is left terrified that his brother is dead. Meanwhile, Belle conceals her inner torment. Joe battles for survival. Meanwhile, Belle is plagued by confusion. Elsewhere, Priya fears repercussions. Distracted by the voices in her head, Belle reacts badly when she thinks the voices are telling her to destroy the alcohol for her new business. She goes berserk in the barn. Later, Lachlan and Gerry search for Belle. Will they be able to find her? Meanwhile, Priya sees an act of destruction.

Need help with finances

Should I stay or should I go?

My elderly father retired to Spain many years ago, and is now 85. His physical health has been failing for years but he is still sharp mentally. Daily help is needed in the home. He only has his state pension from England and we simply can’t afford to get more help in. He manages at the moment with our help but we have full time jobs and can’t always be there. My father would not have a problem with outside help, but there simply is not the money.

I never thought there could be anyone else for me but my wife, until I met a woman who joined our Company last year. There was instant attraction and we knew we were meant to be together. She is also married. At the time my wife was expecting our first child and since the birth I had to make a serious decision. My wife begged me to stay and I also got a lot of grief from my family and hers. I felt so bad for abandoning my daughter, so I gave the marriage another go. I asked the other woman to wait for me and she has. Basically, my marriage hasn’t worked out. But I don’t know whether to stay for my daughter. I am still secretly seeing this other woman.

You may be able to apply for the Attendance Allowance from the UK. And there is also a benefit from Spain called the Ley de Dependencia. I can put you in touch with English speaking people who can help you apply for these benefits. You can also contact charitable organisations like Help Vega Baja San Miguel and Age Concern. Any Readers who are in the same situation, please write to me in confidence for information.

I don’t see how staying for the sake of your daughter is going to be good in the long run. You are also secretly seeing this other woman and this is not fair on your wife. I think sooner or later you will leave, so I would say do the decent thing now and let your wife have some chance of finding happiness with someone else.

WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. EMAIL YOUR QUESTION TO SARA@COSTABLANCAPEOPLE.COM OR SARA IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS, TELEPHONE 650 054 467.

T

he nomination forms are in and counted for the 2018 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards. Once again this year, we received an astounding number of nominations for restaurants on the Costa Blanca. The 2018 Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards, sponsored by Moneycorp, recognize excellence in the local dining industry, offering restaurateurs a standard to strive for, and diners a gauge by which to choose their eatery. Managing Director of the Costa Blanca People, Claire Richards, said “Last year’s Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards were a runaway success with hundreds of nominations received for restaurants and chefs up and down the Costa Blanca. The Costa Blanca People Culinary Awards are a huge talking point within the industry and we hope that 2018’s awards continue to be an enjoyable and uplifting community event. The atmosphere is one of support, positivity and of course, healthy competition and it is a chance for restaurant owners to have a rare night off and be waited on for a change! The finalist restaurants in each category will soon receive a secret visit from one of our judges, posing as an ordinary diner in order for the judging process to be as true to life as possible.” This year, the gala dinner takes place at the five star Marjal Resort in Catral, just off the A-7 motorway. A three course meal is on offer, including wine or beer, followed by entertainment. If you’d like to be part of the fun, tickets priced at €25 per person are now on sale for the Culinary Awards 2018 Gala Dinner. For reservations, call 966 70 10 60.

MABS OPENS RESPITE CENTRE Last week saw the official opening of the MABS cancer charity respite centre in Urbanization Camposol. The charity purchased the old doctors’ centre in Camposol at the beginning of the year, and with the help of contractors and many volunteers they have converted the building into a respite centre for those suffering from all types of cancer.

The centre will also be used as a drop in for those seeking advice and on the lower level there are storage facilitities for all of their specialist equipment and fund raising articles. The Provincial Grand Lodge of Murcia was proud to assist this most needed facility and were able to pay for an air conditioning system throughout the building, the specialised sanitary fittings in the two wet rooms and articles of specialised furniture. A spokesman for the Provincal Grand Lodge, Duncan Robert Mitchell, said he was pleased “that we had been able to assist and speed up the opening of this centre”. The photo shows Duncan Robert Mitchell Past Provincial Grand Master, Beverley Thomson Vice President of MABS, Garry Sandlan Provincial Charity Steward and Peter Kent Provincial Grand Master. The Provincial Grand Lodge of Murcia hopes to be able to support this charity and others in the following years.

British drug-runner stands trial in Alicante Brian Colin Charrington, the presumed leader of the international network and the main suspect in a huge drug bust, has attend the Alicante Provincial Court, with eight other suspects. All are accused of crimes against public health, document falsification, belonging to a criminal organisation, secrecy and money laundering. Briton Charrington was one of the ten most wanted across Europe, and was captured in Calpe along with the other members of the gang at other locations on the Alicante coast in July 2013. The operation was developed by Greco (Organised Crime Special Response Group) and the National Police and initially 13 were arrested, seven in Spain and six in Venezuela The agents found some 200 kilos of cocaine, half a million euros in cash, top of the range cars and six leisure boats. The presumed leader of the gang onwed a dozen of luxury properties on the Alicante coastline and had served time for drug trafficking in England, Germany, France and Spain – where he was arrested in 1997 with four tons of hashish. According to police investigations, those properties worked as a hiding place for most of the most wanted fugitives

search by the UK police. The judgment comes with the evidence supplied by the British Agency against Organised Crime, the Venezuelan Anti-drugs National Office, and the America Police Community, the French police, the Argentinean Naval Prefecture, the Colombian police and the Brazil Federal Police. The investigation started in January 2010 and centred on the romantic partner of Charrington, who had been going out with a French drug runner, Alain Coelier. She was shot dead six months later, in July of the same year and Charrington´s bodyguard in La Nucía was Condemned for kidnapping Coelier was also condemned at the time to 12 years in prison for

his part in the kidnapping of the girl Melodie Nakachian, daughter of the magnate Raymond Nakachian and the singer Kimera, in Estepona (Málaga) in 1987. The hearing against the network led by Charrington opened recently in court number 10 of Alicante Provincial Court and will continue until the end of the week. The Prosecution accuse the gang of introducing to Spain a consignment of cocaine on a leisure yacht via Altea port, drug which was decomposed, before being redistributed inside a house in El Albir (Benidorm) Consulted judicial sources said the nine accused suspects are currently not in prison for these crimes, and have been formally asked to attend court.

Facebook saves Murcia Mum from suicide A young woman based in Madrid saved the life of her suicidal mother hundreds of kilometres away in the Region of Murcia – thanks to Facebook. The victim, said to be aged between 45 and 50 and living in La Unión, had been suffering severe depression and cut her wrists open with a kitchen knife in the early hours of the morning. She then wrote on Facebook that she had done so and said her goodbyes. Her daughter, who is in Madrid, saw her mother's Facebook status and immediately rang the 112 emergency hotline. Police and paramedics had to break the door down to get into the house, and found the woman unconscious. She was still alive, and was taken straight to Santa Lucía University Hospital in Murcia, where she is expected to make a full recovery. This is one of many cases where Facebook has saved lives through suicide messages being spotted in time by friends or family members who may be elsewhere in the world.

Banco Santander posts profit rise despite poor UK performance Spain's banking giant Banco Santander has posted a 10 percent rise in its first quarter net profit, with good results in the Iberian Peninsula offsetting a poor performance in the United Kingdom. The eurozone’s largest bank by market capitalisation said that its profit increased to 2 billion euros from January to March this year. Spain, which has overtaken Britain to become the bank's secondlargest market, contributed to this rise with a 26 percent increase in profits thanks to the integration of smaller, struggling Spanish rival Banco Popular, which it acquired in June 2017. "Costs increased following the incorporation of Popular, however, this was offset by positive trends in commercial revenues and an improvement in the cost of credit," Santander said in a statement. However, profits in its largest market Brazil - rose more slowly by seven percent as negative exchange rates took their toll on performance. The United Kingdom, which until 2016 was Santander's biggest market, saw its net profit drop 23 percent "as a highly competitive environment placed pressure on revenues, and costs increased" as did "loan loss provisions" expenses set aside for potential situations like customer defaults. Now, the United Kingdom is only Santander's third biggest market.

After Brexit Spain will house new strategic HQ for the EU The southern Spanish town of Rota, in Cádiz province, is already home to the Spanish Navy’s biggest military base, and also to what is probably the largest US naval base in all of southern Europe. But after Brexit, in March of next year, Rota will also house one of the European Union’s five operational headquarters (OHQ), replacing the current one at Northwood, in Eastbury, Hertfordshire. Rota also hopes to replace Northwood as headquarters of Operation Atalanta, the EU naval mission that fights piracy off the coast of Somalia. But this role is also coveted by Italy. Milex 18, was a military exercise that was held in Rota between 13th April and ended last Wednesday, will serve to certify the base’s new role as an OHQ, ready to command any mission or operation within the framework of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Spain’s Defence Minister María Dolores de Cospedal and a delegation of diplomatic and military representatives from the EU and NATO visited Rota recently to witness part of the exercise. Rota is widely expected to pass the test. The naval base is already home to four US guided missile destroyers and to the Spanish fleet’s general headquarters. The site is prepared to handle more demanding missions that the “nonexecutive” ones typically carried out by the EU. When the designation becomes official, Rota will join four other operational headquarters that the EU keeps in Paris, Potsdam, Rome and Larissa (Greece). The Spanish Defence Ministry estimates that a €1.5 million investment

Don Quixote is the World’s Best Book according to the world’s top authors In May 2002, the novel by Spanish author Cevantes, Don Quixote, was voted by the world’s top authors to be the best book ever written. The voting was conducted by a survey that featured more than 100 of the best authors around the world. When announcing the survey results at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Nigerian author Ben Okri said that Don Quixote is a novel everyone must read before they die. The novel is a simple but amazing story in the form of an exceptional tale. Approximately 100 notable authors from 54 countries voted the book to be the most meaningful of all time. This poll was conducted in Oslo and was organised by editors from the Norwegian Book Clubs. Famous writers like Wole Soyinka, Seamus Heaney, Nadine Gordimer, Doris Lessing, and Carlos Fuentes voted in favor of the book. This exemplary piece

of art by Miguel de Cervantes gained more than half of the votes, beating the literary works of Shakespeare, Homer, and Tolstoy. The authors claim that ‘even if you do not know much about Spanish culture, rest assured that once you start reading the book, you will not want to stop. The book can be regarded as the most classic of all the recent novels. Don Quixote is also noted as one of the greatest works of literature, as the book is a lively and earthly story of real people. That is, Cervantes shows the readers a realistic world and the people associated with it as they truly are’. In the prologue, Cervantes says that with the help of chivalric romances, he wants to destroy—through ridicule— the influential people of his time. Don Quixote himself has ironically turned mad from reading such stories, and sets out to imitate the daring feats of

www.costablancapeople.com

the chivalric knights. The chapters of the book are entertaining as they showcase the misadventures of Don Quixote. Perhaps these are the bits that have entered popular culture. There is also a lot of poetry recited by lovesick shepherds and goatherds. Cervantes wrote the second part of the book ten years later. As you read on, you will find out that the main character and his loyal servant are becoming much more interesting. Don Quixote, the main character, and Sancho, the servant, are now depicted as figures to make fun of, and not as endearing people. The book has a lot to offer, as it contains more than a thousand pages encompassing a fourhundred-year-old satire. Well, in whichever form it is portrayed, the book is worth reading for any serious literature student, or for anyone who likes reading in general.

will be necessary to accommodate the new headquarters. A large chunk of that funding will come from the EU, sources consulted by this newspaper said. And of the 95 service members who will work there, half will be Spanish nationals and the other half will come from other EU member states. But Spain does not want the new HQ to be inactive, and is hoping to also “inherit” command of Operation Atalanta from Northwood. However, this ambition clashes with Italy’s own desire to take control of the anti-piracy mission from its command centre in Rome, which is already the headquarters of Operation Sophia against migrant trafficking in the Mediterranean. Claim Spain feels it has a claim to the mission: not only was it one of the staunchest supporters of Atalanta’s launch in 2008,

but it is also the only country that has maintained a permanent presence in the theatre of operations, with 37 Navy ships and 31 Air Force detachments. Spain is currently contributing the replenishment vessel Patiño and the maritime patrol aircraft P3 Orion. Spain is also the only country to have participated in every single EU operation, and is its biggest contributor: around 30 percent of all members of European military missions are Spaniards. Experts agree that moving the antipiracy mission to Rota would be the most logical move from a military standpoint and also the fairest from a political view. But the Spanish Defence Ministry has no certainty that this will be the case, and has asked France and Germany for support. The final decision will be made most likely in May by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Italian Federica Mogherini.

Palma de Mallorca will be first Spanish city to ban tourist apartments Starting in July, homeowners in Palma, on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, will not be allowed to rent out their apartments to tourists. The capital of the popular Mediterranean destination has adopted a pioneering measure in Spain, where other cities are also struggling with the consequences of mass tourism, including overcrowded centres and soaring rent. The local governing team – a leftist alliance of the Socialist Party (PSOE), the local group Més per Mallorca and the anti-austerity Podemos – has made this decision after commissioning several studies on the matter. “Palma is a bold and decisive city,” said Mayor Antoni Noguera. “We agreed on this on the basis of the general interest, and we believe that it will create a trend in other cities when they see that finding a balance is key.” Studies show that the number of unlicensed tourist apartments on offer grew 50 percent between 2015 and 2017 to reach 20,000 units. In Palma, which is Spain’s eighth-largest city by population, only 645 properties used for short-term vacation rentals have proper licenses. The problem of affordable rent in Palma has been raised not only by residents but also by workers who commute to Mallorca from mainland Spain. City officials say that while vacation rentals are not the sole cause, they are a factor in the 40 percent rise in average rental prices since 2013. The governing team is due to approve a new zoning project that will then undergo public scrutiny before being put to a final vote at a council session in July. At that point, tourists seeking this kind of accommodation

will no longer be allowed to rent apartments in multi-family residential housing. Instead, they will only be able to stay in detached, single-family homes, which are being left outside the ban. Yet even these properties will be off limits if they are located on protected rural land, near the airport, or in nonresidential areas. There are around 180,000 homes in Palma, of which 23,000 (12 percent) are single-family homes, according to local authorities. The move follows a reform of tourism legislation by the regional

parliament of the Balearic Islands in August of last year. That reform banned vacation rentals in apartments, but left it up to local authorities to decide which neighborhoods to apply it in. The city of Palma has decided to consider the entire municipality a “single zone” where the ban will apply in all parts of town. The decision is meant “to protect residents,” said Mayor Antoni Noguera. Short term rentals Studies commissioned by city officials show that 48 percent of tourist

ETA apologises ahead of dissolution next month The Spanish government has reacted positively to ETA’s apology to victims of its decades-long terror campaign. “It is good for the terrorist group to apologise to the victims, because the victims, their memory and their dignity were determining factors in ETA’s defeat,” said the executive. “ETA should have apologized sincerely and unconditionally a long time ago.” The government release added that ETA’s decision to express remorse is a consequence of “the strength of the rule of law,” which defeated the terrorist group “with the weapons of democracy.” The armed group, which killed over 850 people in five decades of assassinations, kidnappings and extortion, has admitted “the harm caused during the course of its armed trajectory” in a document released on Friday by the Basque news organisations Berria and Gara, which ETA regularly uses to make statements. The wording of the document is notably different from that of previous ETA statements, which had avoided recognizing the suffering of its victims. This time, ETA admits its “direct responsibility.” “We are aware that throughout this long period we

have caused a lot of pain, including a lot of damage for which there is no solution. We want to show respect for the dead, the wounded and the victims caused by ETA’s actions, to the extent that they were harmed by the conflict. We are truly sorry.” However, the group also claims that “the suffering was there before the advent of ETA, and it has continued after it abandoned its armed struggle.” Besides the statement, there is an explanatory note stating that “as part of its debate process, ETA has decided to publish a statement about the harm that was caused. During this debate, ETA militants considered it necessary to show sympathy for the suffering.” Opposition leader Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist Party (PSOE) tweeted a message to victims of ETA and their families, noting that “it has been a long, tough road.” We are before a great step towards definitive peace: admission of the terrible harm and pain that was caused. Our heartfelt regards to the victims and their families. It has been a long, tough road. Victims’ relatives took the statement with cautious optimism, noting that in its statement ETA has only apologized specifically to the

victims that it feels “did not participate directly in the conflict.” Basque regional premier Iñigo Urkullu made a similar observation, and asked ETA to show “the same consideration to all victims.” EU Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said the news shows that in the European Union “there is no room for guns and weapons, only for peace and the rule of law.” Internal debate In September 2017, ETA opened an internal debate to decide on its own role and the life-cycle of the organisation, five months after it staged a decommissioning event under the supervision of an international verification committee. After declaring a permanent ceasefire in 2011, ETA is planning to announce its complete dissolution on the first weekend of May. The government and Basque parties believe that the formal dissolution could facilitate advances in two issues: selfcritical reflection by ETA and the Basque radical left, which is a key factor for the victims; and the transfer of ETA convicts to prisons closer to the Basque Country – a key demand of the group, against Madrid’s policy of scattering them in jails throughout Spanish territory.

apartments are offered for seven to nine months out of the year, leaving out the option of long-term residential rentals. “There is a parallel between the evolution of vacation rentals and the rise in rental prices,” said José Hila, the local chief of city planning. Rent in Palma has soared 40 percent in recent years, making it the second Spanish city after Barcelona where residents spend the most on rent. “Tourist accommodation affects the makeup of buildings and neighbourhoods, and it also affects

social harmony,” said Hila. A report by the Citizen Ombudsman’s Office shows a rise in the number of complaints filed by residents due to problems with tourists who use these apartments, typically related to noise. There were 42 complaints in 2014 and 192 in 2017. “All European cities are being transformed from one day to the next by this type of offer,” said planning chief Hila. “We need some order. There will be vacation rentals in Palma, but only where there needs to be.”

Altea banned bathers until the waters could be deemed safe, and the poisonous species have also been seen on the Levante and Mal Pas beaches in neighbouring Benidorm, as they were earlier in the month. Although it looks – and stings – like a jellyfish, the Portuguese Man O'War is in fact a different species altogether, a marine hydrozoan from the Physaliidae family normally found in the Pacific, Atlantic and the Indian Oceans, but not normally in the Mediterranean. Given their very close similarity, the Portuguese Man O'War, or Physalia Physalis, is often referred to as a 'false jellyfish'.

Its stings are extremely painful and poisonous, and in some very rare cases, have proven fatal. As yet, Altea's environmental councillor Bea Nomdedeu says no reports have been received of members of the public being stung, and the coastguard service has not mentioned sightings for a day or two. But the beach remains shut and will stay that way until at least the start of this week, in case they come back, or longer if they are spotted again. Lifeguards on the two aforementioned Benidorm beaches worked round the clock for two days about a fortnight ago clearing up these perilous creatures. They fished out 14 of them altogether.

HELP gives to children’s cancer charity AFACMUR On Monday 23rd April Sr. Jose Mariano Fernandez Garcia the Director of AFACMUR (Association of Families of Children with Cancer in the Murcia Region) visited the office of HELP Murcia Mar Menor in Los Alcazares to be presented with a cheque for €3000 by HELP’s President Christine Baillie. AFACMUR was chosen by the membership of HELP to be the second Charity in the Murcia Region to receive a donation from HELP’s funds raised during 2017. This deserving cause helps children diagnosed with cancer in the Murcia Region, it provides both practical help and guidance during the dark days of first diagnosis and later during treatment in hospital. Psychological assistance and work with the parents as well as many other support services and educational projects are covered by the charity. As with many charity organisations in Spain it receives little money from local Government and relies heavily on the parents of the children being treated and fund raising activities to support itself. Looking after 40 to 45 children every year is a difficult task but this they do with great determination. The latest project, a play area on the roof of Arrixaca Hospital will provide a safe, clean and secure area for the children undergoing treatment and allow them to get away from the rigors of hospital life and play like ordinary children for a few hours each day. The €3000 donated by HELP will go towards completing this project said Sr. Jose Mariano Fernandez Garcia. For more information on the many services that AFACMUR provides use afacmur.org. For information on HELP please visit at our office in Los Alcazares or call on 968 570 059.

Physical activities to make you sweat that are NOT the gym If you find going to the gym intimidating and expensive, don’t let that stop you from working out. You can work with a personal trainer, who are very affordable here in Spain or you can take up a group activity to help motivate you. Here are 20 ways you can exercise and sweat away the pounds

that don’t involve heading to the gym or paying out too much money. Running Running is an excellent form of exercise for burning calories and losing weight without hitting the gym or spending a fortune—all you need is a proper pair of running shoes. You can expect to burn about 100 calories per mile, depending on your body weight. The more you weigh, the more you burn per mile because it takes more energy (calories) to move a larger body the equivalent distance at a given pace. Running will also help tone legs and butt muscles. Cycling Cycling is a great workout option if you’re short on time but live within a reasonable distance from work or are have regular amounts of tie on your hands. You can burn 370 to 460 calories

commuting, and save money on gas. Just keep a change of clothes at the office as you’re going to work up a sweat! In the winter, pop your bike on an indoor trainer at home. There are also plenty of apps available to help you stay motivated and take your fitness routine to the next level. Local cycling groups here on the coast are also a good option. Bikram yoga Bikram yoga (aka hot yoga) is famous for making you sweat. The idea is simple: you do regular postures, but in a studio that’s heated to 40 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit) with 40 per cent humidity. It’s a challenging physical activity that can burn up to 330 calories for women and 460 calories for men per 90-minute session. Just be sure to drink a lot of water. Racquetball

Racquetball is an exhilarating sport for those who enjoy fast-paced competition and camaraderie rather than solo sports. It’ll make you sweat buckets and burn a whopping 740 to 920 calories per hour. Hiking Hiking is a wonderful way to get out of the city, explore the great outdoors, and sweat away the pounds while you’re at it. According to the Mayo Clinic, hiking typically burns 438 calories an hour. Wear a heavy backpack to up the sweat factor. Swimming Swimming might not make you sweat because you’re already wet, but it’s a full-body workout that burns 580 to 730 calories an hour. You can swim outdoors in a lake or the ocean, or indoors at a pool. It’s an excellent form of low-impact exercise with a low risk of injury. Brisk walk Brisk walking is a relatively safe, lowimpact activity that almost anyone can do—even if you’re overweight or out of shape. If you pick up the pace, you can sweat away 370 to 460 calories an hour without driving to the gym or buying any fancy gear. Add some hills or swing your arms and you’ll work up more of a sweat. Rowing Rowing is a fun, low-impact sport that’s guaranteed to make you sweat. In the summer, join your local rowing club and enjoy burning calories while being part of a team. In the winter, use an indoor rowing machine at home to stay in shape. Depending on your weight and intensity level, you can expect to burn 438 to 546 calories an hour. Aquarobics Aquarobics is perfect for getting your heart rate going without stressing your joints because the water absorbs the impact. Many people think aquarobics is just for seniors, but anyone with joint problems, weight issues, or who is pregnant can burn 402 calories an hour with this aerobic exercise. Dancing Whether you take hip hop lessons or cut shapes in your kitchen while cranking your favourite tunes, you can work up a serious sweat without setting foot in a gym. Grab a partner or get down like nobody’s watching and dance the pounds away. High-intensity interval training If finding time to fit in an exercise regime is an issue, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) might be the answer. In a 10- to 30-minute session, you can burn 25 per cent to 30 per cent more calories than other forms of exercise. Activities may include sprinting, biking, or jumping rope for 30-second vigorous bursts to elevate your heart rate, followed by a few minutes of slower activity, repeated four to six times during a workout. Hills Whether you’re a walker or a runner, adding hills to your workout will increase your stamina and leg strength—and up the sweat factor! Depending on where you live, you might enjoy the added challenge of trail

Events for ECCH The sun is out, and it's time to start thinking about where to go and what to do. Stairs If hills are hard to find where you live, you can still increase the challenge of your walk or run without using a StairMaster at the gym. Simply find a set of stairs on your route and go up and down them several times. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator and burn off 65 calories in 15 minutes. Run up the stairs and you’ll burn 657 to 819 calories an hour. Skipping Jumping rope is a portable, low-cost exercise that can easily be added to any workout to really make you sweat. Jump rope at the park when the weather’s nice or move the furniture and skip in your living room. No need to spend money on a gym pass—just invest in a quality rope and you can burn an impressive 861 to 1,074 calories an hour. Football If you lack motivation to exercise on your own, then a fast-paced team sport like soccer is a great way to work up a sweat while having fun and being part of a team. You’re more likely to stick to your fitness routine when the entire team is counting on you. Plus you’ll be

burning 752 to 937 calories an hour. Basketball Basketball, or netball for that matter, are other team sports that will have you dripping with sweat in no time. You can shoot hoops at your local park, play pick-up games, or join a local teams or league. These sports require jumping and sprinting for short distances—which means you’ll be burning 584 to 728 calories an hour. Rollerblading Rollerblading (or inline skating) may look like effortless gliding, but that’s not the case. It can be a sweaty cardio workout, especially if you get low and go fast. It’s also a good commuting option. Why not burn 548 to 683 calories an hour on your way home instead of trying to squeeze in a trip to the gym? Tennis If you’ve ever watched professional tennis, you know the players sweat—a lot. But you don’t have to play at a

professional level to reap the health benefits of this racket sport. You just need a racket, a few balls, a court, and a partner to start burning 584 to 728 calories an hour while enjoying the sunny outdoors and some friendly competition. Calisthenics Crunches, push-ups, chin-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats, and burpees are all simple yet highly effective strength exercises you can add to any fitness routine that will have you gasping for air and sweating in no time. Calisthenics provide a similar fitness level to weight-based training exercises, but without requiring expensive equipment. Cross-country skiing Cross-country skiing—as well as its warm-weather version, roller skiing—provides a serious sweat-inducing workout. Unlike cycling and running, crosscountry or skate skiing works your lower body and your upper body in a big way, providing a full-body workout.

Carol via email asks I am still using Windows Vista on my Acer laptop and I’ve been told it will stop working and I will have to upgrade to windows 10 or someone said I would be best going with Windows 7? Will my computer run either of these or is it time for a new laptop? Aunty Says Hi Carol. Windows Vista is now 10 years old and will be officially unsupported around April 2017 but it won’t actually stop working. What will happen is certain apps will no longer update (Chrome for example) and devices such as printers won’t come with the necessary Vista version of their software. I would recommend going for Windows 10 over Windows 7, simply because it is the latest version and I have no doubt that Microsoft have already reduced their support for Windows 7. Whether or not your laptop will be able to run Windows 7 I will need you to email me the exact model and I can investigate further for you. Tina from San Luis asks: Hi Aunty, I use Amazon for most of my online shopping and books and everything has been fine for years but all of a sudden it has changed to a Spanish format and all the books for sale are Spanish versions. Also there seems to be far less for sale and I am struggling to understand the text. Can you please tell me how to get it to go back to English? Aunty Says: Hello Tina. Probably the best way is to use www.amazon.co.uk (rather than .com or .es) as this will force the UK English version. Windows often

tries to be a bit too clever and checks your location and decides what language you need, and as .com sites are global this can cause this kind of problem. Elaine via email asks: Hello Aunty. I have started getting a warning message when I switch on my HP Pavilion laptop "Warning: the battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue." When I continue my laptop starts up and runs without any problems and the battery level indicator says I have 1 hour and 45 minutes which seems fine as it is the original battery and I know the deteriorate over time. Can I do any damage by not getting a new battery or should I continue to use it? Aunty Says: Hi Elaine. It very likely that your battery is simply on its way out. A new battery for one of them won’t be very expensive, around €40 for a good one, so maybe have a nose on amazon or ebay. As long as it is partially working you won’t do any damage to the

www.costablancapeople.com

laptop or Windows so it may just be worth putting up with the problem. Pete via email asks: Dear Aunty. I have a new laptop with windows 10 and with my old one, when I opened my bank statement from my bank, it automatically went to a spreadsheet program. Now when I open the same download it brings up Microsoft Excel but it says my trial period has expired and I need to go online and purchase a copy. I don’t remember exactly how it worked before but I think it was Office but was a free program you had recommended. Aunty Says: Hi Pete. What you probably had before was the free Apache Open Office from www.openoffice.org which does pretty much everything Microsoft Office does. You may want to remove the trial version of Office via “control panel” “programs and features” That’ll do for this week, email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

Hospitals in British expat hotspots issue warning for ‘lethal’ painkiller nolotil After the drug claimed countless lives, a health network on the Costa Blanca has issued a recommendation to its medical staff to avoid prescribing Nolotil to Anglo Saxon and Scandinavian expats. The recommendation comes after an Alicante-based medical and legal translator, Cristina Garcia del Campo, began researching the painkiller which she says has lead to ‘the biggest’ drug probe in Spanish history. “It has been a long time in coming and by raising so much awareness, I am sure lives have already been saved,” said Garcia del Campo who has managed to compile ‘up to 100’ case studies, after conducting her own dedicated research. “Spain wants to help, that’s for sure. I have had support from every healthcare professional I have spoken to,” added Garcia del Campo, who has a medicine and pharmaceuticals qualification. Nolotil, also known as Metamizol, is banned in the UK, the US and most of Europe. The drug is still one of the most popular painkillers in Spain, yet the most feared side effect is agranulocytosis, a severe and rapid drop in white blood cells, which leaves patients unable to fight infections. In a breakthrough decision, Marina Salud, Departamento de Salud de Dénia, has issued a notice to medical staff to avoid prescribing Nolotil to Anglo Saxon and Scandinavian patients.

A spokesperson said: “As Marina Salud is conscious of the cautions in the United States, the UK and Scandinavia regarding the general administration of Metamozil, and due to the high percentage of British and Scandinavian residents in Marina Alta, it has issued a notice – not a ban – to its medical staff to preferably administer a different painkiller as a substitute to Metamizol.” The integrated health network includes one hospital (Hospital de Dénia), 12 integrated and regular

(Conselleria de Sanidad de la Generalitat Valenciana) for the 24 health departments of the Valencian Health System. “In Spain the authorisation or not of any medication is ordered by the Spanish Medicine Agency (Agencia Española del Medicamento) for the whole country,” added the spokesperson. The dangers of Nolotil came to light after learning that dozens of expats had died or been brought to the brink of

doctors. “The Spanish don’t read English papers and no one notified their cases to the right place, so how could doctors know?” said Garcia del Campo. The translator realised something was wrong after working with an Irish expat who suddenly became critically ill with sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis after taking the drug. He died later in November. Garcia del Campo noticed that a large number of other English and Irish

health centres and 34 doctor’s surgeries in Marina Alta. Marina Salud stated this is a recommendation, not a ban, which will pop up on its internal system. “As we are a public hospital, we operate in line with the directives of the Regional Ministry of Health of Valencia

death after their immune systems were allegedly destroyed by the commonly prescribed drug. A trio of families told how their relatives had died unnecessarily in excruciating pain. Yet authorities refused to take claims seriously, despite the evidence being backed up by local

patients had been suffering with sepsis at hospitals along the Costa Blanca. “I thought, this can’t be normal,” explained the translator, from Madrid. And after looking at patients’ notes, she found that each had one thing in common – they were all taking Nolotil. Although manufacturers list side

effects such as agranulocytosis, necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, they are considered ‘very rare’ affecting one in every 10,000. The figures did not seem to add up to Garcia del Campo in relation to the many she had encountered, so she set about doing her own research. However, no information existed in Spanish media. She came across an article about Irish expat, Billy Smyth, who had tragically died after taking Nolotil in 2016. After months of tireless research she got the evidence in front of Pharmacovigilance (Farmacovigilancia) in Valencia – a drug safety organisation, which monitors and prevents adverse effects. It immediately classified the information of ‘exceptional importance’. Now according to the translator, government bodies, General Directorate of Pharmacy and Healthcare Products (Dirección General de Farmacia y Productos Sanitarios) and Pharmacovigilance, are carrying out ‘the biggest national study ever into medication’ across 17 regions. Garcia del Campo revealed medical professionals now believe there could be a lack of an enzyme or a genetic difference, that means Anglo Saxons and Scandinavians are at higher risk than Spaniards. Garcia del Campo is still urging expats and holidaymakers affected by Nolotil to come forward by messaging her at cristinadrugresearch@gmail.com.

ITV Changes to Start in May Changes to the mandatory ITV vehicle safety testing procedure will come into force in May. Users of vehicles who suffer a failure or negative result will be able to go to a different test centre for the retest, as long as the faults have been rectified. ITV test centres will be obliged to have diagnostic reading tools that can be connected to the on-board computers of the vehicles. This way it will be possible to detect if malicious software has been installed that alters the operation of the Airbag, the catalysts, or the particle filters. Likewise, reviews should also be made in greater depth on the security elements. In the past, this would involve physical tests of the seat belts, but from now on the electronic elements that are accessed through the computer on board the vehicle will also be checked. These changes will result in many improvements to the system, but this is not the end of the proposed reforms, with many more expected to be implemented soon.

The DGT announced the creation and propagation of a database of vehicle movements and history, which will then be checkable by future interested parties. The technology behind this scheme would see cameras installed around the road network, and at the entrances and exits of towns and cities, which will record the registration number of vehicles as they pass. The infrastructure for this technology is already in place in some towns. However, in the future, the database will also link to the ITV test reports, recording faults or issues, and will collate information from traffic incidents, crashes and repairs. The maintenance schedule will not initially be mandatory, but will be based on a technological platform that will collect the digitized workshop sheets that record all the operations that are done on the vehicle. Because not all workshops have the appropriate computer technology, a deadline will be given for them to adapt.

In addition, to make drivers aware of the need to pass the ITV (between 1.5 and 2 million vehicles are currently believed to be on the roads without a valid certificate), the DGT will deploy intensive campaigns which will be repeated periodically. At the moment, when speed detecting radars detect a vehicle that exceeds the speed limits, it automatically checks if the ITV has been passed and if it has mandatory insurance in place. Now, according to Gregorio Serrano, the Director General of the DGT, it is a matter of taking one step further and will not only be controlled through the radars, but also with the licence plate readers that are installed in the vicinity of the roads and other points of the road network. When they detect that the vehicle has not passed the ITV or if it went for an inspection and failed, the DGT will automatically send a warning. If, on the second occasion, appropriate action has not been taken, the DGT will automatically issue a fine.

Keep Calm and Learn Keep your Number About your Car Plate Clear In recent years, different safety devices such as blind spot detectors, autonomous emergency braking or parking sensors have been incorporated into vehicles, but the amount of information they provide and the number of systems that must be kept under control can also create an increase in the level of distraction whilst driving, especially when there is a lack of real understanding as to what each of the alerts and warnings may display. There are many systems that help make driving safer. Most of them hide behind names and acronyms that not everyone understands. Systems like ABS, ESP, BAS, traction control or blind spot control are part of the elements that, little by little, have made their way in modern cars. A recent study by RACE and Castrol revealed that the lack of knowledge about the operation of these technologies can have a negative effect on driving, as 6% of drivers become frightened by these systems, some 13% become stressed, and 25% report being distracted. It is necessary to know the operation of each system to avoid that apprehensive feeling and anxiety caused by the use of technology that generates a continuous tension in the conduction known as 'technological stress'. A cars cockpit has become less like a

wheel and a few levers, and more like that of the Space Shuttle in recent years, and pilots are trained extensively in the use of their complex systems, a driver has to rely on a manual at best, assuming the driver actually bothers to read it of course. That is the real solution however, read the manual, search You Tube, search the internet, and train yourself for every device on your vehicle. Do so before you take to the road, practice and prepare for the eventualities that might present themselves. Also, according to RACC studies, ignorance or overconfidence in technology directly influence driving. Thus, if the system alerts the driver when exceeding the speed limit but the control is automatic, the driver can forget about the accelerator and cause excessive relaxation on fast roads. For its part, Spanish and German researchers have developed a system that analyses the behaviour of the driver, and, based on the data collected (speed, changes of gear, acceleration, etc), makes a series of recommendations in real time, according to the Confederation National Driving School (CNAE). What happens in the mind? This stress caused by the technologies in the vehicle directly affects our psychophysical state. According to Luis Montoro, president of the Spanish Foundation for Road

Safety, Fundación Española para la Seguridad Vial (FESVIAL), stress is a general process of adaptation to the environment whose problems appear when their level is very intense and is maintained for a long time. If the adaptation to this medium, in this case the technologies behind the wheel, is permanent, the mind cannot rest and, consequently, the body will perform negative actions. Health and driving concentration have to be compatible to drive safely. With the changing mode of information and the constant advancement of telecommunications, it seems that you can never keep up with technological developments. According to Antonio Cano Vindel, president of the Spanish Society for the Study of Anxiety and Stress, driving stress depends on the level of knowledge. While learning to drive, a level of disturbance is generated and it has an impact on an emotion associated with stress, which is anxiety. The amount of data that the driver can visualize and take into account while driving can fatigue you and, even worse, distract your attention by taking care of other data and taking your eyes off the road. Driving requires a level of concentration appropriate to the circumstances and any type of distraction can cause a road error with fatal consequences.

The number plate on a vehicle serves as a unique visible indicator that allows for the identification of certain elements such as the vehicle´s owner, to those with access to the necessary database. For everyone else, it still serves to provide information which could be of use, such as the age of the vehicle if you are planning to purchase it, for example. In Spain, number plates used to carry a distinction which identified where the vehicle was registered. This can still be seen on some older vehicles, such as the prefix “M” for Madrid, “A” for Alicante or “MU” for Murcia, for example. These days, the number plates don´t display those characteristics, but are formed by 4 numbers and 3 letters. If you check the DGT website, dgt.es, you will be able to see the current series of letters being used, which are KKH as of April, 2018. There are also apps available which will allow you to work back and show the age of a vehicle, or at least when the series in the number plate was being used. You can of course check the full vehicle history on the DGT website as well. Normally, the number plate must be displayed, and in a fixed location such as the bumper, at both the front and rear of the

vehicle. Some vehicles have special locations for the display of the rear number plate, which is also acceptable if that location is part of the original manufacturing specification and has been approved. Motorcycles and scooters (including microcars) must display their number plate at the rear. There are very clear specifications for the number plate, in terms of the height of the characters for example, the colour, size and shape, all of which means that only certified manufacturers of number plates are allowed to make them. You are not allowed to simply take a piece of cardboard and colour it in with a crayon, for example. Tampering with the original number plate is also an offence. There have been countless occurrences of drivers attempting to mask the real number of their vehicle, sometimes using tape, sometimes using specialist sprays that claim to hide the numbers in the event of being snapped by a traffic camera. Whether these methods work or not is irrelevant, they are illegal. These days, new acrylic number plates are replacing the old metal ones. The metal number plates soon faded in the sun, rendering them both useless and illegal, whereas the modern acrylic ones remain clear at all

times. If you do have a metal number plate, especially if it is faded, you really must get them replaced immediately. Metal number plates were also prone to damage. Sometimes an object may strike them and cause damage, and it was not unknown for children to occasionally inflict damage to them by bending them. Bending them back in shape often caused them to break. Their acrylic relatives are far more resilient to damage and bending, and last considerably longer. The number plate must be visible at all times, day and night, and must not be obscured by anything, including dirt. At night, it must be illuminated. You are also not allowed to alter the number plate in any way, such as putting stickers or name tags on it for example. Only number plates which are certified for use in Spain can be used on vehicles registered in Spain. That is why, if you are towing a trailer for example, you must replicate the vehicle´s number plate at the back, in addition to the unique number plate of the trailer, if applicable. If you are carrying items such as bicycles, they sometimes come with an additional holder for the number plate, as the original may not be visible when obscured by the carrying frame.

Shush to church bells The church bells in La Mata are in trouble for ringing too loudly. That’s the conclusion of Torrevieja town hall according to an article in Informacion. The complaint against the bells was originally lodged by a retired man from Madrid. However, the decibels emitted by the church bells of NuestraSeñora del Rosario have been causing consternation amongst a few of its neighbours for some time. In particular, a loud speaker, situated high up in the church tower, sounds on the quarter, the hour and whenever there is a mass. It isn’t just a bell ringing either. Sometimes they play a tune to bring people to the church to pray and the neighbours are now fed up of being kept awake and woken up by the sound. It is claimed that a hundred neighbours have registered their objections that the church bells are just too loud. They’ve complained to the town hall of Torrevieja and the Valencian Community. They’ve also registered their concerns with the parish.

Finally their complaints have been heard in Torrevieja triggering a visit by the local police to one of the complainants houses. The result being agreement that the bells surpass the levels allowed by local laws and an order has been made to the local parish that the volume must be limited. And if it isn’t? The next step could be that the activity is closed down. In other words, that the church bells are not allowed to ring.A situation that could cause quite a stir in the hamlet of La Mata. The neighbours do not want it to go so far. However, they want to enjoy the summer and be able to keep doors and windows open if they wish. The neighbours are keen to emphasise that they do not have anything against the church. However, this is a battle that has been waging since 2005 and reflects some of the difficulties of accommodating both the wishes of tourists and the wishes of local residents. Hopefully a compromise will be found. Suzanne O’Connell

TALES FROM THE TOP ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Jose Mourinho entered Old Trafford for Sunday’s final clash with Arsene Wenger claiming “the Invincibles made me a better coach.” Arsenal fans heard the comments and felt sad that Arsene was unable to say the same. Mourinho wants to stay in management as long as Arsene, and I am fine with that idea on the agreement Jose becomes a complete parody in his final few years in the exact same way as Wenger has managed. As for Arsene, all he wanted for his last few weeks in the Premier League was a bit of “peace”, not something he is used to in Manchester. It has to be said that Arsene’s final team selection for a game against his biggest career rivals suggested that he wasn’t too bothered about the result. It was Arsenal’s youngest Premier League side since the last time they sent a bunch of young lambs out to the Old Trafford slaughter and lost 8-2.

The game was a reflection of this new found love between Arsene and Jose. It was all a bit too nice. It didn’t feel like Manchester United versus Arsenal. The biggest concern for Arsenal fans was the fact that the very young Arsenal team played quite well and there was a danger that Arsene might have thought, “they might win the league in three years time so I had better stay”. United probably weren’t even sure what motions they were going through, but they were definitely going through some. The sight of Ander Herrera high fiving everyone on the sideline when he was subbed off for Fellaini after an hour said it all really. Ander, Jose thought Fellaini was going to be better than you. This is not a time for high fiving. And, Jose was right wasn’t he? To make even more of a mockery of the event, Micky-T refused to celebrate his equalising goal for his new club. Why? Were you worried you might offend the club that barely selected you and then chucked you out with the Alexis Sanchez bathwater, Henrikh? It was a perfect opportunity for an Emmanuel Adebayor moment and it was missed. In the end it didn’t really matter. Arsenal have a much bigger week ahead of them, whereas United get to pretend they are in midweek action with a trip to Brighton on Friday night. Outside of it being Arsene’s last trip to get abuse at Old Trafford, nobody really cared about the game. This suddenly brought back to life relegation battle is where the real interest is. A matter of weeks ago it looked set in stone that West Bromwich Albion were gone and would drag Stoke City and Southampton under with them. But now? Who actually knows?

One thing that must be being mused over at the Hawthorns is, “what if we had given Pardew the boot when we should have done, or even the week after that? Or the week after that?” His temporary replacement, Darren Moore, is unbeaten against two Champions League winners and a Champions League runner-up in his brief management career. WBA’s 1-0 win away at Newcastle United gives them just a teeny-tiny glimmer of light at the end of the very long relegation tunnel. They have a chance and, this bit is key, they are hitting a bit of form. Form is not something that is abundant at Stoke or Huddersfield, for example. Stoke City will take a point from a trip to Anfield, of course they will, but deep down they know they were not playing a real Liverpool side. They were playing a strange blend of Liverpool reserves plus five others with their minds elsewhere, considering they have a slightly more important match coming up on Wednesday. Even Mo Salah looked distracted as he missed the kind of chance he has scored at least 40 times this season. Winning all those awards seems to have changed Mo. I’m joking, of course -he is still far too humble for a man of his ability. Huddersfield Town must have had Everton at home down as a game to get something from. If they had highlighted it, then their performance was even more disappointing. Could Cenk Tosun be Sham Allarfarce’s parting gift to the Everton fans? He looks like a player, which is a rare thing at Goodison Park currently as Sham’s tactics continue to smother every other player who looks like they might be half decent. Huddersfield have a horrid run in, they

Another week of sporting action has probably passed you by completely, so it’s a good thing I am here to point out some of the things you’ve missed, isn’t it?

quite in the Alex Higgins headbutting someone category, but it’s all we get now. Carter let his snooker do the talking and saw off the tournament favourite 13-9. I don’t bring football into this very often, as you know, but the ECB have

this as he claims he is constantly thinking of ways to make the game easier to understand. Straussy, shortening the game even further does not make it easier to understand, you just give people less time to be confused. Having been second best to the Ferraris all weekend, even the ego of Lewis Hamilton must have been slightly surprised to have won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Hamilton snatched victory after the Red Bulls took themselves out, Vettel made a crucial error and his teammate Bottas got a last lap puncture. This almost sounds like an exciting F1 weekend.

Yes, of course it is. Snooker has been rather dull for many years now, so it is with great delight that I report some ‘controversy’ from the Crucible in Sheffield. Ronnie O’Sullivan crashed out of the tournament over the weekend and caused a storm by, wait for it, calling his victor “Mr Angry”. O’Sullivan had just fluked a shot, passed his opponent Ali Carter at the table and said “that’s for being Mr Angry”. Yes, that was it. It’s not

Rafa Nadal won his 5962nd match on clay last weekend which is pretty good going for a tennis player whose knees must feel like they are at least 20 years older than the rest of him.

confirmed that West Ham United’s Athletics Stadium will not be used for any World Cup matches next summer. My word, it is barely a football stadium let alone a cricket arena. Mind you, it is unlike the ECB to get the basics right. Oh, wait. It was to do with ODI cricket so it was top of the agenda. England are looking to revolutionise the way shortform cricket is played by knocking a whole 15 minutes off T20 cricket and launching “The 100” which is basically a match played over 100 balls each. Andrew Strauss is the, er, brains behind

could be in big trouble now. So much of me wanted Mark Hughes to go down with Southampton having failed to win them a game. But, Bournemouth do have a soft centre and the Saints exposed that on Saturday. If even Hughes is now winning football matches then this relegation dogfight still has some life in it. One team that will not get dragged back in is Crystal Palace. Their opposing striker Jamie Vardy was nominated for the most recent “we are backing the manager, there is no story here” interview with Sky Sports and his side promptly went out and delivered a performance that suggested the complete opposite. Mind you, it didn’t help Leicester City’s cause that Wilf Zaha was right up for it, following last week’s refereering shambles around him. I mentioned in my Friday column that the thought of an angry Wilf running past him will have been giving Wes Morgan sleepless nights, but it looked like Wes chose the first whistle to start taking a 90 minute nap. Zaha tormented the Foxes, who have once again made it perfectly clear where they stand on their current manager. I mean, even Christian Benteke scored - albeit slipping when taking a penalty.

means their idiotic contingency of fans can get out of the Lancashire town once in a while. Booing Bong wasn’t massively appreciated by the Brighton manager Chris Hughton, though I have to say the entire 90 minutes wasn’t really appreciated by anyone unfortunate enough to have to watch it. David Moyes’ tie after 30 minutes was as messed up as West Ham United’s defensive performance. Manchester City really do not need any help scoring goals, so for West Ham to put the first two into their own net was a little unnecessary. City scored their 100th goal in just their 35th game, and it was lovely to see club legend Pablo Zabaleta score it, his 13th for the club. If you just forget he was lining up for the Hammers, then that is a cool story. Personally, I’d advise Gareth Southgate to get Aaron Cresswell on the plane to Russia just to take free kicks after he got West Ham back in the game on the stroke of half-time. Not that they were back in it for long though, right?

Chelsea decided one goal would be enough to beat Swansea City and drag them closer to the trapdoor, so they scored it early and that was that. Cesc Fabregas joined an exclusive club of players to have 50 Premier League goals and 100 Premier League assists. I won’t bore you with the names of the others. Burnley are all but confirmed as being European footballers next season which

San Miguel Golf Society The dire forecast of heavy rain caused many water-averse members to call off the visit to El Valle. Of the 48 names on the original start sheet, only 27 members and four guests teed off. It would be fair to say that some quickly lamented their decision to play in the sodden conditions. Of the 31 who started, only 19 completed their rounds. Waterproofs, attire not usually required in this arid zone, were the order of the day. The deluge only halted when most had finished their round. With the wet grips on clubs spookily resembling the texture of a slippery salmon, scoring was on the low side with Colin Rust’s winning tally of 33 on CB topping the day’s efforts. Due to the depleted number of participants, the normal categories of gold, silver and bronze winners were washed away and replaced by a single group of overall winners. Despite holing from off the 17th green, Hugh Reilly was the welldeserved winner of this week’s Abacus prize, a bottle of red wine to drown his

sorrows. Our thanks to the staff at El Valle for their understanding and contribution to the day. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Gold Division 4th Place Mike Kaylor 29 points 3rd Place Jackie Rust 33 points 2nd Place Robin Eastman 33 points (CB) 1st Place Colin Rust 33 points (CB) Nearys Hole 6 Noel Bannon Hole 9 Ken Flaherty Hole 12 Carmel McCann Hole 15 Mike Inns Abacus Hugh Reilly 31 starters inc 4 guests 19 completed rounds. The Plaza Golf Society On this very warm spring day the TPGS ventured down to the wilds of El Valle for what was to prove to be a tumultuous final day of the season. Liz Sully won the overall for the day and the Silver division with 33 pts Chris Baker and Lee Holtham 2nd and 3rd. The Gold division was won by Declan O'Crowley with 31 pts just pipping wee Tony Small on countback with dodgy Darren Hancock coming in 3rd. The Eclectic which was a culmination of best scores over the season at Villamartin was won by the now familiar name of Liz Sully who romped in with 58 pts, Curly Wilson was 2nd with 54 pts and Gordy Brindley and Lee McWilliamson joint 3rd with 53 pts. Imanyo Golf Society LAST GASP EQUALISER! This was the third time the Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque has been played for, Denise sadly passed away on 28th April three years ago at the tender age of 47, she was Co-owner of Baybrooks Restaurant in Algorfa and we thank Baybrooks for sponsoring the plaque and the day’s golf. The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s. Then we headed off to our favourable course Altorreal with fingers crossed that the weather forecast was going to be wrong, well it wasn’t, it didn’t stop raining for about four hours but that did not deter the twenty four players. The format was Texas scramble, better ball Stableford scoring. Winners of the “Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque” were “The wine

collector” Brian Court and new member “watching your handicap” Steven Ayre with 36 points, runners up were “Watch my ball” Dave Rotchell and Eamon Murphy with 33 points, nearest the pins winners were hole 5 Chris Houghton, hole 8 Andy Godfrey, holes 10 and 17 he’s been waiting three years to win a nearest the pin and then two came along, Andy Ramage. Back at Imanyo’s there was food and a few drinks waiting, the two football cards were won by Dave Williams with Crystal Palace and Tracy Goldring with West Brom, adding another €40 for our charities this year, Caritas Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. and A.E.C.C. cancer care. We would like to thank Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the great food and great hospitality.

CD MONTESINOS 2 CALLOSA DEPORTIVA 2 CDM TEAM:- Dani, Manu, George, Joao, Alfredo, Manu Saez, Daniel Saiz, Luis, Pastor, Luis, Patri, Dario. CDM Subs:- Aitor (GK), Bashir, German and Manuel Sanchez CDM Goals:- Daniel Saiz and Manuel Sanchez With a much changed side and no less than five first team regulars missing, CD Montesinos almost came unstuck again this week against a Callosa side who were desperate for the points as they try to avoid relegation. The first half performance from Monte was, as it had been the previous week at Cox, totally out of character with their form this season. The players looked tired and unable to play their free flowing game as they have done for most of the season and found themselves 0-2 down

with the visitors scoring from their first two attacks. It also has to be said at this point that the match official was awful throughout the game booking no less than eight Monte players and, eventually, sending one off (the first time Monte have had a player sent off this season). We all know that being a referee at any level is difficult but this “gentleman” was truly inept and how he got out alive is still a mystery to me!! The one glint on an otherwise woeful first half came right at the end. Having already had a goal disallowed (as Monte woke up after going 0-2 down), they pulled a goal back right on half time when Daniel Saiz fired past the visiting keeper. Even then the referee looked long and hard before he gave the goal!! The second half held great expectation for Monte. Surely they would overturn the first half result and take all three points. Alas, it was not to be, but having hit the woodwork twice, had another goal disallowed and a number of goal line

clearances, it looked as if all the good work in the second half would count for nothing, when up popped second half substitute Manuel Sanchez who, in the 89th minute of the game, equalised with a truly magnificent effort to give CD Montesinos a share of the points. The Montesinos Man of the Match award went to Luis who was presented with his award after the game from Match Day sponsor, Erling Witzoe. Next weekend, CD Montesinos travel to local rivals San Miguel to face the local club there, Racing San Miguel. Date and time are yet to be confirmed so please look at our Facebook page (CD Montesinos) for up to date information. The CD Montesinos supporters club, The Full Monte, will be holding the end of season Player of the Year presentation dinner on the 15th of May at La Posada in Los Montesinos. The Med Bar golf society at Mar Menor After a very windy night the night before, we made our way to the Mar Menor with most of us thinking that we might not be able to play as it was still very windy. Surprise of the day was that there was hardly any wind by the time we teed off, sadly as the round progressed the wind appeared (It seemed that the wind had followed us down the motorway) and to a lot of us this meant the course was hard work but never mind, all enjoyed the day out. It was a good day for one member, Andy Trefry as he cleaned up with 4 prizes. Results for this individual stapleford outing towards our player of the year: Gold and overall winner Jonty Searson – 33 points Runner up Andy Trefry Silver division winner Roger Clarke 32

T.M.G.S. at Alenda Golf Of the 36 members scheduled to play a Stableford competition, 34 made the journey in spite of the threat of rain. As it turns out they were justified as the rain didn´t appear until late in the afternoon when only our last group were still out on the course and had it not been for a couple of our groups playing slowly even they would not have gotten wet! Slow Play! Probably the worst thing to experience in golf, having to wait to take your shot just seems to kill the pleasure of the game. I would urge all players to consider the players in the following group and give them the opportunity to enjoy their game also, after all the game should be played with consideration to all other players on the course or at least that’s how I read the etiquette section of the rule book! The course was in its usual good condition and nice to see that the tee repairs from last month are now well and truly on their way to full recovery. The flag positions on some of the greens did however make the approach shots a little tricky and this was probably the reason that no one broke par. The 2´s pot was

carried over from last week´s visit to H.D.A. so adding in this week´s subs meant that the 2 lucky winners took away €35 each both making birdies on hole 16, well done to J. Hillier and P. Mahoney. Our only visitor this week was P. Wainwright who managed to score 28 points to take the visitors prize. Bronze cat; 3rd M. Myhrvold

Lewis Hamilton wins Azerbaijan Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton was handed victory in a madcap finish to a chaotic, incidentstrewn Azerbaijan Grand Prix during which both Red Bulls sensationally collided with each other. Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas was on course to win after Mercedes took advantage of a late safety car to jump long-time leader Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari. But, after Vettel had thrown away second place with a mistake at the restart, Bottas suffered a puncture on the next lap. His two rivals out of the way, Hamilton was given victory and the championship lead on a plate after looking set to finish third. The late safety car had been triggered by a crash between the two Red Bulls, when Daniel Ricciardo slammed into the back of team-mate Max Verstappen while trying to pass into the first corner. There will be recriminations at Red Bull, whose drivers had appeared on the edge of a crash for much of the race as Ricciardo fought to pass Verstappen and the Dutchman defended right on the edge of acceptability, and some might say beyond. Red Bull are well known for employing two drivers who fight fiercely on track, but there has not been a coming together of this magnitude since Vettel and Mark Webber ended each other's race during the Turkish Grand Prix in 2010. But although their incident - for which they both received a reprimand from race stewards - will generate headlines they had a bit part in a race that for so long Vettel looked to have in a headlock. The German led from pole and, after a safety car was triggered by several first-lap crashes, built a threesecond lead on the first racing lap. Hamilton could not quite stay with Vettel and his hopes appeared to be over when he locked his wheels going into Turn One on lap 22. That forced him to stop for fresh tyres and demoted him to third place, and now there was a cat-and-mouse game between Vettel and Bottas. Vettel and Ferrari stuck it out with a

conventional strategy, stopping on lap 28 for soft tyres, while Mercedes left Bottas out hoping for a safety-car period. It came, thanks to the Red Bulls, as Ricciardo cannoned into the back of Verstappen. As a stop under the safety car costs less time than one in racing conditions, Bottas was able to emerge in the lead. The question of whether he could hold off Vettel in what appeared to be a faster car became academic when the German lunged for the inside at the restart with four laps left and ran wide, letting Hamilton and the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen through. Force India's Sergio Perez moved past into third soon afterwards. Bottas then seemed set for the win, but ran over debris on the next lap and suffered a major tyre failure as he passed the pits with three laps to go. Hamilton, who took his first win since last October's US Grand Prix and a fourpoint championship lead over Vettel, was disbelieving afterwards. "Really quite an emotional race," he said. "Valtteri did such an exceptional job and really deserved the win. I was very fortunate. It feels a bit odd, but I've got to take it."

How the Red Bull madness unfolded The Red Bulls were expected to contend for victory but, instead, in the opening laps found themselves under pressure from the Renaults of Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg, who were on softer tyres. Verstappen's passing move on Ricciardo at Turn Two at the first restart on lap six let Sainz past the Australian and the Spaniard was soon past the Dutchman, too. After Hulkenberg took himself out of the reckoning by hitting the wall in his second unforced error in Baku in two races, the Red Bulls set to it. Ricciardo was obviously faster, and

tried several times to pass Verstappen, the edgiest moment when the Dutchman nudged his team-mate to the wall in Turn One as Ricciardo tried to pass around the outside on lap 12. Ricciardo settled back for a while but then attacked again on 35, this time succeeding in his outside move at Turn One. But, when they pitted two laps apart on laps 38 and 39, Ricciardo somehow lost out despite stopping first, which should give an advantage. Next time around, Ricciardo sought to make amends. He dummied to the outside, Verstappen defended and then defended again to the inside, and Ricciardo locked his brakes and smashed into the back of his team-mate, the pair spinning into the run-off area. The incident will cause controversy and while Ricciardo undoubtedly misjudged it, there will be those who feel Verstappen paid the price for moving too many times in the braking zone, something he has made a controversial trademark since his debut. Mercedes non-executive director Niki Lauda sided with Ricciardo, saying the incident was "70percent Verstappen's fault because he moved too many times". There may also be an argument the team should have intervened earlier, knowing the intensity of the drivers' personal battle, and given Ricciardo was clearly the quicker driver on this day.
