Foreign residents targeted in padrón registration push The City Council is encouraging all expats to register on the padrón with a new and targeted campaign called “Orihuela advances with you”.

T

he Councillor for Statistics, Noelia Grao, in collaboration with the Councillors for International Residents

and Administration Modernisation, directed respectively by Sofía Álvarez and Miguel Ángel Fernández, have presented a new campaign to encourage the registration of

foreigners across the municipality with the aim of being able to increase funding for key services such as the Emergency Services Centre which would provide dedicated

ambulances and fires engines for the Coast. The Councillor said: "With this campaign, we seek to maintain and increase the population figures of Orihuela as a large municipality, because with them we can increase and improve public services and the quality of them." It is vital that people understand there is a direct link between the services on the coast and the number of people on the padrón, the more people that register, the better the services allocated to the coast. Information brochures that will be distributed in Orihuela city and along the coast, highlighting the benefits of registering as a resident on the municipal padron, in order to access public services such as health or education. Gang detained for robbery The Guardia Civil detained a gang in Torrevieja whose tactics included puncturing their victims tyres forcing them to stop after paying a visit to the bank. When the drivers stopped their cars, they were then robbed by the criminals. The two Chilean men of 34 and 47 are believed to have stolen money to the value of €22,000. They were arrested in connection with two crimes but it´s believed that another 13 are to be investigated. The gang were caught when a resident of Bigastro had been to the bank and on his way home realised that he had suffered a puncture. On stopping the car at the road side to change the tyre, two men approached him asking for directions. Whilst one of them talked to him the other tried to seize his backpack which contained the €6,000 he had just withdrawn from the bank. The victim reported the crime to the Jacarilla Guardia Civil and the police took pursuit in the direction of Torrevieja, where the robbers had driven off towards. They targeted an area of banks where they predicted that the robbers would return to for another attempt. That is where they spotted the car reported to them and made their arrest, only two hours after it being denounced. Continued on page 5

www.orihuela.governalia.es/ which will facilitate and speed up the process allowing people to avoid any long queues. For its part, from the Department of Modernisation of the Administration, led by Councillor The Councillor for Statistics also announced an extension to the public opening hours of the Orihuela Costa padrón registry, located in the Plaza del Oriol in Playa Flamenca, from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 2.30 pm. “We seek to bring municipal services closer in order to meet the needs of citizens and facilitate the padron registration process,” said Councillor Grao. People can find all the information about the padrón and how to register along with documentation in a downloadable format on the website of the City of Orihuela, www.orihuela.es in the pages for the Department of Statistics.

More news about the N332 It has been confirmed by the Ministry of Development in the Official Bulletin (Boletín Oficial) that the project to widen the N332 through Torrevieja will go ahead. A company has been agreed who will carry out the project to plan the work. They are a consultancy and it will take €492,000 just to lay out the plans for the road widening to go ahead. This next stage will take 18 months, concluding in December 2019. At this point it must pass the environmental impact assessment and then, if it all goes smoothly, a budget will be allocated so that the new road can actually begin to be built. The widening of the road will take place along eight kilometres and will require an estimated investment of 40 million euros. A huge amount of money and an undertaking that will take us up to the end

of 2020. It had been hoped that some time might have been saved by reducing the planning time from 18 months. However, the current contract that has been issued maintains this time scale and we cannot expect pressure on this bottle neck to ease before 2020. Who should get the credit for reaching this next planning stage, is of course, being debated between the local political parties. The PP is keen to be seen as the party responsible with the support of the exPrime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. However, there have been no quick fixes on the project and the fact that stretches around Torrevieja were completed so long ago, raises huge question marks. Why must such an important stretch of road remain a single carriageway until 2020? Suzanne O’Connell

San Juan without bonfires inTorrevieja Social media went wild as the announcement was made that the traditional bonfires of San Juan could not be lit on the beaches of Torrevieja this year. The customary festival takes place on the longest day of the year, 23 June, which this year fell on a Saturday. It’s been customary for young people and families to enjoy the ritual of lighting a small fire to purge themselves of their demons. The evening ends with a paddle in the sea and optimism for the months ahead. However, last year concerns were raised about the celebration as the pallets used for many of the bonfires left behind an array of screws and nails which hadn’t been destroyed. These were considered to be a danger for those using the beach the following day. This concern was increased last year when a volleyball competition had been scheduled to take place and competitors were anxious about the risk of stepping on a nail. This year, the risk was removed completely as the order was given that no bonfires could be lit and the order would be enforced by local police. The town hall claim that the prohibition is always in place but this year would be enforced. The decision to do this wasn’t announced until 20th June by the councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares. A late call that also came in for criticism. The announcement was greeted with horror by those already planning their summer solstice celebrations and for many seemed an overreaction that meant a favourite event would be missing from this year’s social calendar. The decision was made with little time to make alternative arrangements. However, it was unlikely to be

challenged with fines of up to €3,000 being a powerful incentive to abide by the ruling. The decision has been justified by the town hall on the basis of the implications it has throughout the summer season. Nails and other items become embedded and despite all efforts to clean up afterwards, continue to make an appearance threatening public health. Councillor Manzanares explained; ‘We cannot accept that hundreds of kilos of wood and other materials are burnt without restriction on our beaches.’ In neighbouring towns of Orihuela and Guardamar, the bonfires were still allowed to go ahead. In Guardamar, specific sections of the beach are apparently allocated for the fires with other parts remaining out of bounds. In Elche the restriction was not publicised but pallets and wood intended to be used for bonfires were removed.

So,what did happen? Many people were still out celebrating San Juan. Instead of fires on the beaches, they were still determined to mark the occasion but without the bonfires. What had been a festive and happy occasion now presented as a rather hostile atmosphere. The police were around to ensure that the ruling was enforced and there was a general view that the situation could have been prevented and alternatives found. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE NEWS: Torrevieja theatre deficiencies denied Continued from page 3

Torrevieja registers its anger Groups of women were out on the streets of Torrevieja on 22nd June to make their voices heard in the debate about the release of ‘La Manada’. This is the gang who have been accused of raping a young woman at the Pamplona San Fermín Festival. The protestors read their manifesto which criticised the judicial decision to release the group on bail. The protest outside the town hall in the Plaza de la Constitución was joined by councillor Victor Ferrández, Javier Manzanares and members of Sueña. The decision by the court in Navarra seems to go in the face of the huge wave of anger expressed by women across the country at the reduction of the crime to one of sexual assault from that of rape. This follow-on decision continues to ignore the wave of feeling that the law and judges do not support women’s rights here in Spain.

Cables to be removed from the streets An order has been issued to tidy up the town centre of electrical installations that are visible. The proposal was made by the councillor for Ciudadanos claiming that they disfigure the town centre and that the number of the unsightly cables is increasing. The presence of overhanging cables and installations could be addressed, it is claimed, with very little financial outlay from the town council.

The local government of Torrevieja has claimed serious deficiencies in the management of the theatre that are being denied by the PP. In an extraordinary town hall meeting on 21st June that lasted until 1am there was a lively discussion about the status of the town’s theatre. Altogether there was nearly seven hours of debate from 6pm until almost one in the morning about the theatre, which has proved to be a thorn in the government’s side since it was closed in 2015. The theatre opened without a licence being in place in 2006 and continued to host events for the next eight years. It was finally closed, by order of the regional government of Valencia, in 2015. Councillors José Hurtado, Fanny Serrano and Víctor Ferrández addressed the meeting to reveal irregularities in the way that the theatre was opened and managed. These included security and safety measures not being in place that could have meant the theatre was a fire risk. Allegations have also been made that some work done on the theatre was at an

elevated cost to that projected. This included a rehearsal room which cost €160,000 but had been estimated to cost €44,000. In addition it was announced during the meeting that legal action is to be taken against the technician and the architect for not giving the theatre an end of work certificate. This is the main hurdle now in the government’s bid to re-open the

Beach bar suffers theft A beach bar in La Mata has now had its furniture stolen twice in four days from its terrace. ‘Juanito’ beach bar on La Mata beach has lost tables, chairs and other goods valued at €2,500 and calls for an increase in security in the area. The first robbery took place last Sunday when the thieves forced open the

out by the same thieves as previously. The management of the bar has now contracted a security guard to keep an eye on their goods. Thieves attempted to rob another kiosk nearby, however, they were not successful. These bars have permission to open out their premises onto the beach and

secured door of an outhouse and carried off most of the furniture stored in there. It is believed they carried the assorted tables and chairs across the natural dunes using two wheely bins as transport. In spite of new security arrangements costing €500 the thieves broke in again, stealing more tables and chairs. It’s presumed that the robbery was carried

have won the right in competition with others. They also pay a hefty annual fee for the privilege. The owner of the bar has asked for greater police presence in the area in order to prevent more thefts taking place as the summer season gathers momentum.

Car loses control On 21st June at around 9pm a car with four occupants was involved in an accident on La Mata beach. The police were called to find that the car had ploughed into sunbeds and sunshades on the beach several metres onto the beach. The obvious question was – how had it got there? According to the accounts given of the accident the car had been parked in the Avenida del Agua. The driver set off in the car and for reasons that are still being investigated, went through much of the street in reverse, taking part of a hedge with it. Finally, the car crashed into the beach furniture which prevented it from continuing on its travels into the sea. Those in the car were a family of Russians with two young children and fortunately all remained unharmed. It is believed that a mechanical failure could have caused the accident. It was lucky that the timing of the incident occurred when there was nobody on the beach. A few hours earlier and it could have been a very different story.

Atomizers issued to reduce water consumption The councillor for the environment in Torrevieja, Fanny Serrano, has launched a campaign to reduce consumption of water in the home in Torrevieja. The campaign is a joint venture between Agamed and Autolavados Hipopótamo and is projected to save up to 50% of running water. The campaign consists of an atomizer which is placed in the filter of the faucet and aerates the water. It reduces the quantity of water used when washing, for example. The atomizers can be collected free of charge, one per person, from Agamed’s office on Caballero de Rodas street or at Continued on page 6

theatre. The work that needed to be done on the building to conform to safety standards has been completed. However, as this has not been overseen by the technician and architect themselves they do not wish to sign the end of work paper. The architect also claims that he has a bill of €130,000 that is outstanding. A debt that is not recognised by the current town hall administration.

Ironically the fact that legal action is being taken could also stand in the way of the theatre opening as the document would be in the hands of the courts and so could not be released and signed. It seems as though in spite of the hours of debate, the issue of the town’s theatre is not going away just yet. Suzanne O’Connell

The town hall of Torrevieja is investigating the duplication of disabled parking badges. The investigation has begun due to the discovery that a person from Madrid was using one supplied by another person to gain access to selected parking spots. Pride Day It wasn’t only San Juan that was taking place on 23rd June. It was a busy evening as around 3,000 people arrived at the Eras de la Sal in Torrevieja to take part in the second year of Día del Orgullo, or Pride Day. A manifesto was read to defend the rights of the LGTB community and to denounce the suffering of those who are treated unfairly. Activities had been taking place throughout the day too with a large collage painted on the wall by the Vista Alegre Exhibition Hall. This mural painting project encouraged people to think about different identities and aimed to capture the spirit of diversity.

Ryanair ‘seating families apart’ complaint goes to EU European Parliament has agreed to look into a complaint about low-cost carrier Ryanair's seating families apart. Balearic regional consumer protection office CONSUBAL filed the case after receiving 'a multitude of complaints' from travellers, saying this practice went 'against the rights of customers'. According to CONSUBAL,

passengers on Ryanair flights travelling as a family group have repeatedly been split up, and the airline, the organisation argues, is using its 'random seating' policy as 'an excuse', saying that if families want to guarantee they will sit together, they need to pay the seat reservation fee or for priority boarding. CONSUBAL filed the complaint with the European Parliament in March, and has just been notified that the case has been accepted, reveals the consumer group's spokesman Alfonso Rodríguez. But the Irish-based airline hotly denies any 'abusive practices'. “Ryanair's family seating policy is clear and requires families with children under 12 to sit together and for one adult in the party to reserve their seat for the price of just €4,” said a written communication from the company. “Children's seats are reserved free of charge, and families can save even more money thanks to our Family Plus service.”

Civil war bunker to be restored The job of restoring a bunker used during the civil war has been taken on by a specialist firm. They have been hired by Gomendio a real estate business, who construct tourist apartments on Orihuela Costa and in Torrevieja. The agreement to preserve the underground aircraft shelter is part of the condition of allowing Gomiendo to build on some of the land there. The bunker is located close to the sea in Punta Prima and was an underground refuge during the Spanish Civil War. The bunker extends to thirty metres underground and will include additional examples of military equipment dating from the 19th century. The objective of this project is to create a living museum piece that provides insight into Spain’s past. The project idea was developed when Gomendio asked for a licence to build some tourist apartments on the land. The two towers of ten storeys would be built where the bunker is currently situated. It’s the only building plot left to the south of Torrevieja and is a lucrative site because of this. The bunker has not been taken care of in previous years and is in a state of disrepair, although attempts have been made to clear some of the rubble from the site. A beach bar had operated there and the area around the bunker had been used for tables and chairs. Permission to build had been allocated to this plot of land at a time when the need to conserve Torrevieja’s meagre heritage wasn’t at the top of the agenda. Now, conditions have been placed on building going ahead that include involving an archaeological team and the submission of a ‘museográfico’ project to enable people to understand more about the history of the local area. PROTECTING THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY Orihuela Costa Defibrillator Campaign

Costa Blanca People Defibrillator Campaign Update In response to community concerns regarding the prompt arrival of ambulances to emergency situations in Orihuela Costa, in May the Costa Blanca People launched its Orihuela Costa Defibrillator Campaign. We asked all of our readers and advertisers to help us protect the heart of the community by raising as much money as we possibly can to place defibrillators in every Polica Local patrol car on the coast. Working in conjunction with Cruz Roja and Help at Home Costa Blanca, the campaign has the full support of the Town Hall and Local Police Department. There are currently five police cars and a police van allocated to Orihuela Costa and the officers manning these vehicles are usually the first responders to any emergency call in the local area. This means that if someone’s heart has stopped – for whatever reason - at home, in the street, at the gym, in a shop or on the beach the police are the first on the scene. By carrying professional healthcare standard defibrillators the officers will have more opportunity to save lives. The fundraising campaign aims to raise the money for the defibrillators themselves, being advised by Cruz Roja as to which specific machines should be bought, and to provide a spare

battery and adult and child pads for each one. It will also pay for the Cruz Roja to fully train the relevant number of police officers on how to use the equipment.

Running total The campaign got off to a flying start when Help Vega Baja donated €1,500 to the campaign, covering one defibrillator, with spare pads and battery and also covering all of the training costs. The Costa Blanca People

then donated the money raised at its Culinary Awards – €424 - which was very generously boosted to €800 on the night by Money Corp, courtesy of Regional Director Norman Marks, which was the main sponsor of the event and continuously supports local community initiatives. Help at Home Costa Blanca, has be working tirelessly on behalf of the campaign and has to date raised an amazing €3,200 – giving us a running total of €5,500 towards our €10,000 goal. The charity has raised the money through a quiz at Singers Bar in Villamartin and is holding a Fashion Show at the Emerald Isle on 3rd July as well as its weekly market at the Emerald Isle every Tuesday. At this half way point we are calling on local bars, restaurants, businesses and entertainers to host events and help us to reach our target. If possible, we would like to use any additional funds to place defibs in other key locations within the local community such as commercial centres once the initial five have been bought. Any monies raised can be handed over to Help at Home Costa Blanca which will be managing the funds for us. Members of the local community can make donations at the Help at Home shops in Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig or to the charity at the weekly Tuesday market held at The Emerald Isle, La Florida. Help Vega Baja is also happy to collect donations made at its headquarters in San Miguel.

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER FAIR On Saturday, 16th June Age Concern held their summer fair at their centre in la Siesta. The event was well attended by people of all ages who were able to stroll around the different stalls which included clothes, jewellery, plants, bric-a-brac, cakes, electrical items and mobility aids. Those attending received a welcome drink and homemade scones and were entertained by Morris dancers and the

Alpendgold Oompah band who played a number of different songs. There were fund raising activities to help Age Concern continue to provide support for over 50 year olds on the Costa Blanca. Other attractions included a ‘guess the name of the Teddy’ competition with the bear’s name turning out to be Sidney. A tombola, treasure trail and guess the number of bottle tops in the jar were all

popular on the day. For those who took part, the number of bottle tops amounted to 551. The winner was very close, guessing 550. The raffles attracted a lot of attention and those winning included Francisco who won a food hamper containing spirits, wine, food and chocolates. The first prize of €200 of coach travel was won by Tony Harrison. Altogether the fair raised

€2,700, a real success that will help mark Age Concern’s 20th anniversary year. The funds that are raised go towards the caring and welfare requirements of the over 50s in the area. Age Concern are always on the look out for volunteers. If you think you might be able to help out please visit the centre any morning from Monday to Friday

between 10am and 1.30pm in Calle Paganini, La Siesta. You are welcome to come along, enjoy a coffee and meet the team. They will be happy to suggest different ways in which you might be involved and discuss how your skills and knowledge could be put to good use. Suzanne O’Connell

A dog named Sultan

Can you give a very deserving dog a home? Sultan is a 9 year old Swiss Shepherd mix who has been home alone in Campoverde since his owners died. Sultan has lived at the house since he was a puppy and was loved by his owners. However, not long after one of his owners died, the other developed Alzheimer’s. After she died, the house passed to the couple’s two daughters but neither live here and are unable to take Sultan to live with them abroad. Sultan has not been abandoned, the daughters pay neighbours to look after him. He has the run of the garden and a cellar room where he has comforts away from heat or rain with a soft bed and toys. They both visit and stay at the house for holidays and make sure that Sultan is looked after by keeping his vaccinations up to date and having him chipped. They stay in touch with the neighbours and have made sure the local police are aware of Sultan, in fact

one of the police officers is one member of the local community that take Sultan for a walk. Sultan is fed, watered, walked, groomed and cared for...but deserves a new loving home and misses constant human contact. For this reason, animal charity PAPS is actively looking for a home for Sultan as the one thing he does miss is belonging to a loving owner. The daughters, who live in Germany, have given PAPS permission to do this. The charity would like to find him a permanent home that is close by as they do care for the dog and would like to be able to stay in touch. He also needs a home that has no other cats or dogs and has a garden. Anyone who is able to offer Sultan a loving home can contact the Costa Blanca People or PAPS (Protectora Animales Perros del So) which is a small registered shelter run and funded by volunteers and sponsors located near El Mirador, San Javier, Murcia.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Pound Sterling remained an underperformer at the beginning of this week, with worries over the Brexit Bill’s return to the House of Commons on Wednesday. The vote over the extent of Parliament’s say in the event of a no deal being reached in Brexit negotiations presented a danger point for Theresa May, as rebel tory members threatened to vote against the government. Following some compromises made by the government, the rebels backed down and the government won by 319 to 303. The pound rallied after the vote at $1.32, but this was momentary as Sterling only made minimal gains against both the euro and US dollar for the rest of the day. The back end of the week saw a bright light for the pound as a 6-3 vote to maintain interest rates at 0.5%. More surprising was Haldane’s switch in his vote to increase rates for the first time since November. This bullish signal pushed the pound to 1.1440 against the euro and 1.3231 against the US dollar. The Office for National Statistics also announced that public sector net borrowing had fallen to £5bn in May, a drop of £2bn from the previous

year. The pound was quoted at 1.1410 at the end of the week. The pound also felt the weight of a consistently strengthened dollar, but they were far from the only casualties of an 11 month high for the dollar. The Canadian dollar, the Australian dollar and the euro all fought, unsuccessfully. This is despite concerns over the United States announcement of its targets for its 25% tariffs on $50bn of goods from China. China responded with 25% tariffs of its own on US goods, joining the EU and the UK in their plight against Trump tariffs. Following last week’s news that the ECB would not raise the interest rate benchmarks for at least a year, the euro went into this week weakened somewhat. Mario Draghi’s reminder of this fact at an ECB conference with central bankers did not come to the euro’s aid and the currency continued with its crisis in confidence. On Thursday, euro-to-US dollar rate was quoted to be 0.29% lower at 1.544, making it down 3.7% for the 2018 year-to-date owing to the trade war, EU politics, slow growth and divergent interest rates that plague the EU.

Seagate Wealth Management

KEEPING IT LOCAL M

any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of super‐ vision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the invest‐ ments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental princi‐ ples: the strength of the relation‐ ship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meet‐ ings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up‐to‐date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are per‐ forming. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control. If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transferring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Whether it is a spot under a tree that receives only dappled light or a place on the side of the house that never sees the sun, many homeowners are faced with the challenge of trying to grow plants in the shade. Instead of seeing it as a problem, it should be viewed as an opportunity to experiment with the wide range of plants that thrive under these conditions. Shade gardening offers the opportunity to get to know and use a whole new category of wonderful plants. No matter what your taste, there are plants that can turn a once barren patch of dirt into a cool oasis. When we talk about shade, we all have our own ideas about what is shade. All shade is not equal and often the degree of shade changes with the season and even the time of day. Plants usually come labeled with their sun exposure requirements. Deter-mining the light requirements for plants is never an exact science - there are too many other factors at play (cloudy days, extreme heat). Still, if you have ever pondered the difference between partial sun and partial shade, here are some generally accepted definitions to help serve as a guide: Full Sun: Generally speaking, full sun means a plant requires minimum 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day. In warmer climates, this may refer to the hours of sunrise to 11 am and 3 pm to sunset. In cooler climates, this may include noontime sun. Partial sun vs. partial shade: Partial sun and partial shade are similar in that these plants do best when receiving 3 to 6 hours of direct sun per day, preferably in the morning or early afternoon. However, if a plant is listed as partial sun, the emphasis is placed on the plant receiving the minimum sun requirements. If a plant is listed as partial shade it will take full

morning sun just fine, but require some relief from the intense mid-day and afternoon sun. Partial sun/shade is an ideal condition to grow a wide variety of wonderful garden plants. Many full-sun plants will also do just fine in these conditions in fact in the heat of summer, shade is as welcome to many plants as it is to gardeners. Dappled sun/dappled shade: Similar to partial sun, but the term dappled refers to sunlight that is filtered overhead by the leaves and branches of a tree or other tall planting. Most woodland plantings will prefer this type of sunlight rather than receiving even a limited amount of direct sun each day. With dappled sun, the emphasis is placed on sun, where as with dappled shade, the emphasis is more on shade. Light shade: Less than 3 hours of direct sun each day, with filtered or indirect sunlight during the rest of the day. Full shade: Shade all day. Under full shade conditions plants do not receive any direct exposure to the sun, only reflected, indirect light. Dense shade: No direct sunlight all day with very little reflected, indirect light. Dense shade is by far the most difficult type of shade in which to garden. The problem is that plants need light to photosynthesize and produce food, so only those plants with low metabolism are able to survive. Dense shade is easy to spot. They are those dark areas that get essentially no light at all, due to structures, under thickly planted evergreens or under deep overhangs on the north side of a building. Grass does not grow there and few weeds can survive.

WELCOME TO HANOI with Vivalia Travel As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered one of the main cultural centres of Vietnam, where most Vietnamese dynasties have left their imprint.

Old Quarter: The Old Quarter, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, maintains most of the original street layout and some of the architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century Hanoi consisted of the "36 streets", the citadel, and some of the newer French buildings south of Hoàn Kiếm lake, most of which are now part of Hoàn Kiếm district. Each street had merchants and households specializing in a particular trade, such as silk, jewelry or even bamboo. The street names still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. Colonial Hanoi: Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, and many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards and its many villas, mansions, and government buildings. Many of the colonial structures are an eclectic mixture of French and traditional Vietnamese architectural styles, such as the National Museum of Vietnamese History, the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts and the old Indochina Medical College. Tourism: Hanoi is sometimes dubbed the "Paris of the East" for its French influences. With its tree-fringed boulevards, more than two dozen lakes and thousands of French colonial-era buildings, Hanoi is a popular tourist destination. The tourist destinations in Hanoi are generally grouped into two main areas: the Old Quarter and the French Quarter(s). The "Old Quarter" is in the northern half of Hoàn Kiếm District with small street blocks and alleys, and a traditional Vietnamese atmosphere.

Many streets in the Old Quarter have names signifying the goods ("hàng") the local merchants were or are specialized in. Two areas are generally called the "French Quarters": the governmental area in Ba Đình District and the south of Hoàn Kiếm District. Both areas have distinctive French Colonial style villas and broad tree-lined avenues. Entertainment: A variety of options for entertainment in Hanoi can be found throughout the city. Modern and traditional theaters, cinemas, karaoke bars, dance clubs, bowling alleys, and an abundance of opportunities for shopping provide leisure activity for both locals and tourists. Hanoi has been named one of the top 10 cities for shopping in Asia by Water Puppet Tours. The number of art galleries exhibiting Vietnamese art has dramatically increased in recent years, now including galleries such as "Nhat Huy" of Huynh Thong Nhat. Cuisine: Hanoi has rich culinary traditions. Many of Vietnam's most famous dishes, such as phở, chả cá, bánh cuốn and cốm are believed to have originated in Hanoi. Perhaps most widely known is Phở—a simple rice noodle soup often eaten as breakfast at home or at street-side cafes, but also served in restaurants as a meal. Two varieties dominate the Hanoi scene: Phở Bò, containing beef and Phở Gà, containing chicken. Bún chả, a dish consisting of charcoal roasted pork served in a sweet/salty soup with rice noodle vermicelli and lettuce, is by far the most popular food item among locals.

Should I tell her?

Suspected all along

I saw my best friend’s husband out with another woman. It was obvious there was something between them. They were in a restaurant and I was also dining there with my husband. I didn’t go over and tried to keep a low profile, but he saw me and the look of shock on his face said it all. Then as we left he came over and started to try to explain, saying it was a work thing. I didn’t buy it. They were too intimate for it to be a work colleague. I now have a dilemma. Should I tell my friend?

My wife asked for a trial separation a couple of months ago. She’d been through a lot with the death of her father, so I had no choice but to agree to her moving out, so that she could have time to ‘deal with her feelings‘. However, I was troubled that there was more to it than met the eye. One night, I am ashamed to admit that I followed her home from work. Until then, I didn’t know where she’d moved to. She went into a house, and I saw another man walk to greet her at the door. I am pretty devastated, but had my suspicions all along.

I think you should tell your friend, yes. These situations are always hard, but ask yourself if you’d rather be told something like that? Also if your friend found out that you knew and didn’t tell her, I think she could be very angry with you. Nobody likes to be taken for a fool. Tell her exactly what happened, and say you’ll leave it with her, but felt she should know.

Your wife has not been honest with you as to why she wanted to move out. A trial separation is so you can spend some time apart, whilst working on your relationship. It seems she has been working on a different relationship. I would suggest you contact her now, and tell her you know she is living with someone else. You should really regard the marriage as being over now, and see a Solicitor.

Summer fire prevention Sponsored walk success The Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, has presented the annual summer fire prevention campaign and the equipment allocated to the task of fire fighting forest fires.

The team is composed of the four members of the Department available throughout the year to which six people have been specifically hired through the city’s employment exchange programme. These will be divided into two teams, one permanently assigned on the coast and another between Orihuela city and its districts. Cover will be provided 7 days of the week from 9.30am to 7.00pm and will be increased by half an hour during the weekends. "The teams will not have a static base but will be travelling

throughout their areas, moving more frequently to the districts that have a large forests and sierras such as La Murada, Hurchillo, Arneva or Torremendo," said Councillor Valverde.

The campaign began on 1st June and will last until midDecember, a novelty that is due to the need for this team to remain in place but to shift its focus from fire prevention to flood defences given the arrival of the torrential rains that take place in this area during the last quarter of the year Pepe Andúgar, Coordinator of Emergencies and Civil Protection, said: “The team members are fully trained in actions such as fires prevention, missing people, falling debris, mountain accidents, and are able to provide assistance and collaboration with Local Police

and fire fighters especially on the coast, given the increase in population during the summer months." The vehicles that make up the specialist equipment are ready for quick and short intervention in a fire, for example in collaboration with the different emergency services, to which the acquisition of a new vessel has been added in view of the antiquity of the previous one. Historically this vehicle performs between one or three interventions throughout the summer and is a necessary device particularly in support of farmers in order to avoid flash fires in important and expensive crops. The Councillor also took the opportunity to remind walkers and hikers to be mindful of any actions that might cause or encourage fire. He also highlighted that fact that the burning of stubble and weeds during this time, a practice totally prohibited during the summer months. Anyone who spots a fire on wasteland or in the campo should dial the emergency services immediately on 112 and be as accurate as they can with the location of the fire. People are advised not to try and tackle the blaze but to wait for the experts to reach the scene.

On Saturday 23rd June people got together to walk along the sea front to raise money for the San José Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela. It was a good turn out for the walk and the organisers were delighted to raise a total of €1,431.70. It’s estimated that around thirty people took part and thoroughly enjoyed the stroll along the beach front whilst raising money for a good cause. The orphanage is home and school to around 70 children. There are many different reasons why the children end up there but the staff try to make their experiences as normal as possible. However, resources are in short supply

and fundraisers based at Bar Carmens have spent many months trying to collect the items that they know the children need. Lyn and Ken Adams were instrumental in organising this particular event and have followed closely the needs of the orphanage which doesn’t receive government funding. They were particularly delighted that some of the children from the orphanage took part on this occasion too. The twelve children walked along with the fundraisers and those who had taken the time to contribute to the event could see exactly who would receive the benefits. It wasn’t

hardship for those participating. The group met at and finished their walk at the kioska which has its own swimming pool, amongst other benefits. The need for basic items for the orphanage does not go away and fundraising efforts will now continue with a show on 29th September by Los Pistoleros at Bar Carmen’s in El Chaparral. Los Pistoleros provide western re-enactment and it should be a good night out with a hog roast and raffle thrown in. Once again, it’s opportunity to raise money for a good cause and enjoy yourself at the same time. Suzanne O’Connell

Is there ever a convenient time to sell a home that’s being rented? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! At this time of year it can be quite awkward selling your holiday home, especially if it’s being rented out on holiday lets. It’s like a “catch 22” – you need to keep renting your property out, but during the summer months, you’re bound to have more bookings! Let’s face it, there’s never going to be a convenient time to put your property on the market for sale, when it’s being rented. That’s the bad news! But the good news is, this is a very common occurrence and you shouldn’t let it put you off from selling. Us Real Estate Agents are used to this scenario, and can guide the buyers through this delicate showing process. It is always advisable to let your tenants know that the property could be shown from time to time to potential buyers, however it would make it easier on everyone, if you conveyed a specific time of day the property could be shown. That way, the tenants needn’t be worried about having their holiday disrupted at all times of the day. Sticking to a plan of action, will make things smoother for both the tenant and the Real Estate Agent. If you, as a homeowner, are leaving your vacant holiday home in the hands of your trusted Real Estate Agent, there are some do’s and don’ts that you must consider before closing the door and saying Hasta La Vista! The electric: I have had the pleasure of showing a vacant property where the owners had returned to their country, turned the electric off and forgotten they had left food in the refrigerator! You can imagine the smell that greeted us when I opened the door. Please either leave your electric on, or empty the fridge with the door left slightly open.

The water supply: Many people like to turn the water off too when vacating. If you’re going to do this, please be sure to let your Agent know where the connection is to turn it back on if necessary. I was showing a house when the buyer desperately needed to use the bathroom. Well you can imagine my horror when the buyer returned, face white, and said that she had used the facilities BUT there was no water in the toilet! Not a pretty sight! I was frantically running around trying to find the connection. It is always helpful to leave us an air freshener spray out too! Bugs: This time of year, those little pesky ants are frantically looking for water and somehow find their way into your home. Unfortunately the only way to combat them, is to make sure the seals are tight on the windows and there are no crumbs left out anywhere. A can of bug spray left in a cupboard would be useful. Swimming pools: By dosing them up with chemicals and keeping the filtration pump on its timer, should prevent them from looking like pea soup! Or even easier, employ a Pool Cleaner! Please don’t empty them. By keeping them full will prevent any cracking thus causing potential leaks. Whilst your property is on the market, there is nothing more appealing than seeing the glistening waters of a full, clean swimming pool. Security: My last rule is always lock your home as normal, whether your property is on the market or not. Again, any Real Estate Professional will be used to going into dark homes where the shutters are all down. Never been a problem for me, and never will be! Like anywhere in the world, security first. Although I’ve had more than my fair share of “mess” to clean up or “smell” to get rid of, by leaving your vacant home ready for a viewing, will make it a more pleasurable first impression for any buyer, and a happier experience for your Agent. JOLLY HOLS FOR ELCHE CHILDREN “Reaching Out” for Hollywood

The recent charity night at El Paraiso Restaurant, in Guardamar, raised 869 euros for children at the Elche Home. It will be spent on visits to the cinema, museums, aquapark and similar activities during the 3 month long summer holiday. The children are well aware that all these donations come from the ex-pat community, and are so very grateful. Once again, owners, Nico Castany and Virginia Diez, laid on a lovely meal and excellent service, and Johnny & The Roadhogs kept the dance floor full all

night. A great night, with many patrons ordering tickets for the next charity event straight away. On Wednesday, 11th July, we'll be doing it all again in aid of The Stroke Support Association. Another fabulous night's entertainment is guaranteed with The Best of British, reminding us of all the top hits from the 60's and 70's. Tickets are available now from El Paraiso; The Card Place in Benimar, Post Room Benijófar and REZ cafe bar in Quesada. At just 10 euros, this represents excellent value.

The latest fund raiser from “Reach Out” shop 2 was a ‘Hollywood’ themed evening at the Marina Bar on Thursday the 14th June. Organized by David & Lorraine Whitney, volunteers and managers of “Reach Out” shop 2, the evening was a resounding success. A delicious two course meal, movie quiz, Oscar ceremony and fabulous raffle, including a special cake raffle courtesy of Bev Jones, the evening ran very smoothly. With singer ‘Rees’ providing his usual slick performance and repertoire of songs it was an evening appreciated by the ‘full house’. A four piece male strip routine took the

CAT COLONY CONTROL IS A GREAT SUCCESS IN SUCINA Cruz Azul Murcia advocates Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) campaigns as the humane way to control cat colonies

in the Murcia region, providing information, equipment and support to local communities and urbanisations. Denise Standen and Patricia Giller bear testimony to the success of TNR in Sucina. They started in 2015, when their first two kittens turned up. They had no idea where they had come from, but could do nothing more than feed them. Within a few months, they had produced three kittens each and so they sought help from Cruz Azul, who lent them special traps and explained the process. They managed to catch the two mums, who were neutered and returned to the colony; they followed suit with the kittens when they were old enough. During this time, others arrived on

their doorstep and joined the group. With the help and support of neighbours and Cruz Azul, all of the cats were neutered. They now have eleven cats on the urbanisation, who are living happily and in good health. “We couldn’t have achieved the success without the full support of our neighbours and the

continuing help from Cruz Azul” said Denise “and we will continue to look after our little friends.” Trap-Neuter-Return is the humane and effective approach for stray and feral cats. Provenbthroughout Europe, scientific studies show that TNR improves the lives of feral cats, improves their relationships with the people who live near them, and decreases the size of colonies over time. Cats are humanely trapped and taken

to a veterinarian to be neutered and vaccinated. After recovery, the cats are returned to their home - their colony outdoors. Kittens and cats who are friendly and socialised to people may be adopted into homes. Grounded in science, TNR stops the breeding cycle of cats and therefore improves their lives while preventing reproduction. It is a fact that the removal and killing of outdoor cats that some animal control agencies have been pursuing for decades is neverending and futile. Since feral cats are not adoptable, they are killed in pounds and shelters. With a successful programme like TNR to turn to, it’s hard to believe that animal control agencies continue to kill cats, even though that approach has shown zero results. It is time to put an end to catch and kill. TNR provides a life-saving, effective solution for these beautiful, independent cats. If you would like to find out more about TNR, please contact Cruz Azul Murcia by email: info@cruzazulmurcia.com or via their website: www.cruzazulmurcia.com Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a)and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. Rita, Dave and their team at the bar as usual worked very hard to make the event memorable and with their donations of book sales took the evening’s takings to a very acceptable 806.66 Euros for the charity. David & Lorraine would like to thank everybody who helped to make this event one of the most memorable on the charity calendar. The question now is "How do we top that?" Watch this space folks!

Removal of Franco’s remains is one step closer

Spain’s new government will be able to count on a majority in Congress for a proposal from the Socialist Party (PSOE) to move the remains of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco from their current resting place in the Valley of the Fallen monument, located north of Madrid. The new PSOE government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez came to power earlier this month after a motion of no-confidence against the previous Popular Party (PP) government prospered in Congress. However, the PSOE currently only counts on 85 deputies in a parliament of 350, meaning that any legislation it passes will have to count on the support of other groups. In order to secure support for the removal of Franco’s remains from the Valley of the Fallen, the PSOE is proposing converting a reform it had previously suggested to the Historical Memory Law – legislation that seeks to recognise victims on both sides of Spain’s Civil War (1936-39) – into a draft bill that would, among other measures, include the transfer of the ex-dictator’s remains. “The surprising thing is that we have taken so long with this,” said Íñigo Errejón, from left-wing anti-

austerity party Podemos, which counts on 71 deputies in Congress. Centre-right group Ciudadanos, meanwhile, which has 32 seats in the chamber, is calling for consensus to convert the controversial mausoleum into a place of reconciliation, something that it does not see as being possible while Franco’s remains continue to be there. As such, barring any surprises, should the PSOE government opt to pass the legislation through parliament rather than unilaterally passing it via its executive powers, it should count on the votes it needs. “There is a majority in Congress in favour,” said Errejón. “The thing that turns the Valley of the Fallen into a centre for glorification of genocide and repression is the fact that the remains of Franco are still there. Can you imagine something similar on the outskirts of Berlin? Obviously, the remains need to be moved. The PP is more uncomfortable with these issues because it has a minority, albeit a noisy one, that would be opposed, but they also know that this is unacceptable.” According to Errejón, moving Franco’s remains as a first step to changing the significance of the

monument “would not open any wounds. On the contrary, it would reconcile Spanish democracy with democrats. In the 1980s, or even in the 1990s at a stretch, you could have thought that this would cause controversy, but today I believe that the vast majority of Spaniards simply don’t understand this anomaly. It’s going to happen. Let’s make it happen.” Asked about the transfer of Franco’s remains from the Valley of the Fallen, PP representative Andrea Levy claimed that the PSOE was looking for “cultural battles” that, “beyond provoking confrontation do not contribute anything,” news agency EFE reported recently. In her opinion, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is trying to “return to the Spain of confrontation and social tension of Zapatero,” in reference to former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, whose government first passed the Historical Memory Law in 2007. During the PP government of Mariano Rajoy, however, the legislation was effectively overturned, given that its funding was cut to nothing in the 2013-2014 budget.

Stephen Hawking's peace message was launched from Ávila Stephen Hawking's 'message of peace' launched into space on the day of his funeral at Westminster Abbey was sent up by the station in Cebreros, Ávila province – one of just three deep-space stations in the world. Lionel Hernández of the Europea Space Agency's (ESA's) centre in Ávila said the message went up at exactly 1.40pm mainland Spain time, or 12.40pm in the UK, last Friday as the award-winning physics expert's ashes were buried in London. It was sent in the direction of the black hole closest to Earth, known as 1A 062000, which is 3,000 light years away, with the exact coordinates indicating its location supplied by the ESA operation centre in Darmstadt, Germany. The file sent out was a composition created from Hawking's famous synthesised voice and music by the

Greek composer behind the Chariots of Fire soundtrack, Vangelis, and took 30 minutes to transmit. Hernández admitted that the launching of the message was only a symbolic action in reality, since the black hole it was aiming for is around a billion kilometres from Earth and, even travelling at the speed of light, would take thousands of years to reach its destination. The Cebreros DSA 2 (Deep Space Antenna) is one of only three in the world of its type created by the ESA, along with the one in New Norcia, Australia and Marlargüe, Argentina. It opened in September 2005 and its antenna measures 35 metres in diameter, and capable of communicating with spaceships on other planets or in orbits a very long way away from Earth.

Gastronomy days on the Coast are a success The Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, has reviewed the recent culinary initiative Gastronomy Days, which took place from 12th to 17th June in different restaurants in Orihuela Costa. Those taking part in the third event were: the Zenia Lounge Restaurant, La Barraca Restaurant, Los Angeles Restaurant, Las Villas Restaurant, Los Cúcalos Restaurant and the Hotel Restaurant Montepiedra – all of which offered special menus throughout the week at a price of 35 euros. "These culinary days have been a success in terms of participation, as all restaurants have filled their dining rooms and terraces on those days," said the Councillor, "which shows the success of this initiative to continue positioning Orihuela as a destination and place of tourist reference for food and gastronomy." The Council carried out a marketing campaign to promote this event, which was made through social networks and

with an impact in a month of almost 120,000 people reached0 through the development of micro-videos of each of the restaurants. These videos had around 72,000 views, with the most watched video being 11,400 visits. "Thanks to these campaigns," said the Councillor, "we have increased the position of our municipality also in social networks, being the first campaign that the Department has run through these communication channels. Given the success we will continue to use these to support initiatives such as the tourist routes or in the promotion of the next Fiestas de la Reconquista."

Gabriel murderer appears in court Self-confessed killer of eight-year-old Gabriel Cruz Ramírez and ex-girlfriend of the victim's father, Ana Julia Quezada, appeared in court again for a further hearing. Quezada, 44, has been in police custody since she was caught on 11 March with the child's body in the boot of her car after a fruitless twoweek search for him in the Las Hortichuelas area of Níjar, Almería province. Gabriel had left his grandmother's house, where he spent many weekends and holidays, at around 3.30pm on 27th February, intending to go to his aunt's and cousins' home 100 metres away to play, but never arrived. Inquiries so far seem to show that the accused met her boyfriend's son halfway down the road in her car and persuaded him to go with her to help her paint a country house the family owned. She had left the grandmother's home minutes after Gabriel, and nobody else was present. Police began to suspect Quezada after she found a vest belonging to the then missing child near a sewage plant, which had not been there previously. Keeping her under surveillance, but expecting to find the child alive and held hostage, they filmed her pulling a large bundle out of a well and putting it in her car boot before driving to a flat she owned 20 kilometres away. Surrounding her in the

underground car park, they ordered her to open the boot, and the police officers who saw Gabriel's semi-naked body were pictured in tears and comforting each other. Quezada reportedly broke down and confessed, but insists the child's death by suffocation was an accident. She later claimed he had been playing with a pole, swinging it around dangerously, and when she

reprimanded him and tried to wrench it off him, he hit her with it and said she was not his mother and could not tell him what to do. Although it was known that the pair did not get along, Gabriel's mother, Patricia Ramírez and his father, Ángel Cruz both said their son would never have acted in such a disrespectful manner towards an adult, as he was a very polite, quiet and thoughtful little boy. Police have also been probing the death of Quezada's four-year-old daughter who repeatedly fell out of a

The court has authorised the children's protection charity, the Clara Campoamor Association, to proceed with their people's prosecution, although only in relation to Gabriel as a victim and not in respect of his parents. Reports, including the post-mortem on Gabriel, are still being completed, and the case, meanwhile, remains sub judice. Once the forensic papers are released, details of the case will be made public. If found guilty, Quezada cannot be extradited as she is a Spanish citizen.

Italy’s Osteria Francescana crowned world’s best restaurant again Italy’s Osteria Francescana was crowned the world’s best restaurant for the second time recently at an awards ceremony put on by British trade magazine Restaurant, beating out top eateries in Spain and France. Run by chef Massimo Bottura, the restaurant in Modena, Italy pipped last year’s winner, New York’s Eleven Madison Park, in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, after first taking the honour in 2016. It is the only Italian establishment to have won the annual accolade. “This is amazing, this is something we built all together,” Bottura told the awards ceremony held in Bilbao in Spain’s northern Basque Country, famous for its avant-garde haute cuisine. “I am going to use this spotlight to show that chefs in 2018 are much more than the sum of their recipes.” The top restaurants list’s organisers praised “Bottura’s contemporary cuisine, which challenges and reinvents Italian

culinary tradition while make use of the finest produce from the Emilia-Romagna region.” His father wanted him to become a lawyer but when he was 23-years-old Bottura, who was famous for rustling up culinary delights for his friends, dropped his law studies to open a Trattoria in Campazzo, in the countryside around Modena in the Po River Valley. On his days off, he would study with French chef Georges Cogny, who had a restaurant two hours away. “He said to me: ‘always follow your palate, because you have a great palate which will make Modena known around the world’” Bottura said during an interview with Spanish news agency AFP in 2016. He opened Osteria Francescana in 1995 after spending time in New York and Monaco. Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca, which took the top honour in 2013 and 2015,

came in second while third place went to Mirazur in southern France. Restaurant magazine, owned by William Reed Media, launched the awards in 2002 and they are now as coveted by restaurants as Michelin stars, although the methodology used to select the best restaurants has faced criticism, especially from several French chefs who say it remains unclear. There are no criteria for putting a restaurant on the list, which is based on an anonymous poll of more than 1,000 chefs, restaurant owners, food critics and other industry insiders from around the world. ach member gets 10 votes and at least four of those votes have to go to restaurants outside their region. The top 10 included two Peruvian restaurants, Central which slipped to number six from fifth place last year, and Maido which climbed to number seven from eighth place. The only Asian restaurant in the top 10

was Bangkok’s Gaggan, whose ownerchef Gaggan Anand has won praise for his modern spin on his native Indian cuisine. Half in Europe Spain continued to dominate the line-up with three restaurants in the top 10, including El Celler de Can Roca, while France had two including Mirazur. The 2018 list of 50 best restaurants included eateries in 22 countries -- but over half were in Europe. Six are in the United States, six in Latin America and six in Asia. Tuesday’s ceremony also handed out individual chef awards. Britain’s Clare Smyth, who catered the dinner at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last month, was named best female chef and France’s Cedric Grolet best pastry chef. Peru’s celebrity chef Gaston Acurio, who is known for combining classic European techniques with typical ingre-

dients from the Andean country, was given a lifetime achievement award. The top restaurant award has gone to Spain seven times, the most of any country. In addition to El Celler de Can Roca’s two wins, ground-breaking Spanish chef Ferran Adria’s El Bulli, which he closed in 2011, took the prize a record five times. This year was the first time the ceremony was held in Spain. The event has been held before in London, New York and Melbourne.

After delivering migrants to Valencia, Aquarius returns to Libyan coast After bringing 630 migrants to safety in Valencia, the rescue ship Aquarius has set sail again, headed for international waters near Libya. The ship, run by the not-for-profits SOS Mediterranée and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), was the first NGO vessel to run rescue missions after the recent change of government in Italy. Two days later it became the first victim of the country’s new xenophobic policy to close its ports to migrants. The Spanish government responded to the crisis by offering the ship a safe harbour – an exceptional solution to an exceptional case. Before heading off, the rescue coordinator on the Aquarius, Nicola Stalla, said at the dock that “the mission of SOS Mediterranée is to stay at sea while there is a need.” She reiterated her call to “competent authorities to comply with their obligations and guarantee a safe port that should be the closest to the rescue zone,” after the ship was “forced to make the

odyssey to Spain.” Stalla added that the team does not intend to repeat the long and difficult journey to Valencia. “It is clearly not our plan. Valencia is very far. We have all seen that this is something that should not be repeated.” Small overcrowded boats continue to leave from Libya for Europe, with hundreds of migrants rescued in recent days, some by NGO ships. These migrants have been transferred to Italian military ships and taken to ports in Sicily, albeit with notable delay. The central Mediterranean Sea continues to be the most popular route to Europe, although the path via Spain is close on its heels. The Italian government’s refusal to accept the Aquarius and the inaction of nearby Malta have sparked a political, diplomatic and legal debate on how to address the dangerous sea crossings by migrants into Europe. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez quickly resolved the problem of the 630

migrants on board the Aquarius. But there is uncertainty about what will happen next time. Border-control expert Paolo Cuttitta from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam argues that “the consequences of (Sanchez’s) decision for migrants in general will depend on how the rest of the countries in the European Union act and how they adapt their tactics on migrants and trafficking. This is very unpredictable.” The order to close the ports, issued by Italy’s governing Five Star and Liga parties, did not just cause a headache for the coordinators of Aquarius – it also affected the US naval ship Trenton. Last week, Trenton came across a small boat in danger of capsizing with 41 people and 12 bodies on board, 20 nautical miles from Libya. The ship rescued the survivors in accordance with the law and tried to transfer them to the NGO vessel run by Sea Watch (which patrols the Libyan Sea with Lifeline). But with no guarantee that it

could bring them to Italy, the NGO refused to take the migrants. The Americans tossed the 12 bodies overboard and had to house the remaining survivors until they could be transferred to the Italian Coast Guard, which finally brought them to land last Tuesday. The case illustrates the ripple effects of the decision of Italy’s new Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, the leader of the far-right Northern League party, to ban NGOs from docking in the country with migrants on board. Dire consequences The Aquarius’ s detour to Spain meant that the area migrant boats pass through was left without three rescue ships. According to Tocci, the long-term impact of Italy’s ban on NGO ships could force commercial ships to rescue more migrants and increase the number of deaths at sea – firstly because there will be fewer ships aimed solely at saving lives and secondly because “the rest of the

boats and their crew are not specifically prepared to rescue and shelter them.” The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) has expressed concern over Italy’s new policy and stressed their “conviction” that bringing migrants to land as soon as possible “is crucial for the security of migrants and sailors.” IAI researcher Stefano Torelli says that “Sánchez was right to offer support to people who needed immediate help but this is not going to resolve the general situation. While the offer was “decent in human terms and politically correct on a European level,”Torreli says that “the political result in Italy has been catastrophic, instead of being perceived as a decision of a new Spanish government with a different sensibility, it has been interpreted as a great victory for Salvini and his hard-line policy.”

What to do in case of a jellyfish sting If you are stung by a jellyfish, Gili advises leaving the water immediately and looking for a lifeguard. If there are no lifeguards on the beach, wash the wound with salt water, never fresh water. Cool the area down by applying ice for around five to ten minutes. You can also try wetting the wound with vinegar or baking soda dissolved in water. Protect the area by using an antiseptic to avoid infections. If the pain continues, make sure you consult a doctor. And Gili warns against the common myth that urinating on a jellyfish sting can help ease the pain. “That is absolutely false,” he said. “It could be effective for some fish bites but never for jellyfish.”

Authorities scoop eleven tonnes of jellyfish from beaches A huge jellyfish bloom has washed up on beaches across the Malaga region and experts are now watching to see which beaches they might head to next. Authorities in the Malaga region cleared around 8 tonnes of the gelatinous creatures from the shore between Nerja and Vélez-Malaga and another 3 tonnes between Torremolinos and Mijas after the coastline experience the biggest bloom since 2012. The jellyfish have been identified as a species known as the mauve stinger (Pelagia noctiluca) which can cause a nasty case of burning, nausea and muscle cramps if they come in contact with the skin. Yellow flags have been flying at affected beaches since the weekend to warn of the danger of stings. Professor Josep Maria Gili from Barcelona’s Institute of Marine Sciences, told media that ‘the best protection against jellyfish stings is to use sunscreens well and continuously’.

Urdangarin and Torres also used their non-profit to divert around €6.2 million from public contracts secured for organising sports events into private accounts. Urdangarin’s wife, Cristina de Borbón, sat on the board of a company called Aizoon, which was allegedly used to channel part of these funds. She was made to testify in the case, and was ultimately fined for having benefited from her husband’s scheme, but was acquitted of tax fraud complicity. Urdangarin, a former Olympic handball champion who married Cristina de Borbón in 1997, was found guilty of charges that included embezzlement, influence peddling and tax crimes. Brieva penitentiary houses around 200 female inmates, and it also has a small unit for male prisoners that is currently empty. This is where a former Civil Guard chief, Luis Roldán, served out his sentence after being convicted of corruption in the 1990s. The centre is located near Madrid, making it easier for his wife and four children to fly in from Geneva to visit him. Urdangarin had been considering Brieva and other penitentiaries near Madrid, such as the ones in Segovia and Zaballa (Álava).

Spanish king’s brother-in-law walks into prison Iñaki Urdangarin, brother-in-law to Spain’s King Felipe VI, walked into an Ávila penitentiary early last Monday morning to serve a five-year, 10-month sentence in connection with the Nóos graft case. Legal authorities had given him five days to report to the prison of his choice after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal last Wednesday (although it reduced his original sentence by five months). Urdangarin, who is married to Princess Cristina de Borbón, the King’s sister, reported to Brieva penitentiary in Álava province at 8.13am, choosing this centre over 81 other prison facilities in Spain. He arrived in Madrid on Sunday night on a flight from Geneva, his regular place of residence for the last few years. Urdangarin and his ex-business associate, Diego Torres, were the leading figures in the Nóos Institute, a non-profit

El Mundo reporter’s son killed on Brixton railway

capital with his family at the age of 12 when his father, Carlos Fresneda, became British correspondant for the national daily newspaper El Mundo. The deceased teen was due to start at the London College of Communications (LCC) in September, where he planned to study graphic design. British Transport Police broke the news to Alberto’s family, who revealed that their

son had left their house at 5.00pm on Sunday and that his last message to them, at 10.00pm, told them he was planning on returning home shortly for dinner. The family had heard about three men killed in Brixton on the early-morning news, but did not even consider their son may be one of them until the BTP made the devastating announcement.

Murder, She Wrote

The 19-year-old son of a Spanish newspaper reporter has been killed on a London train track, his family reveals. Alberto Fresneda was run over at Loughborough Junction in Brixton when he and two friends – who were also killed - were spraying graffiti around the station. They were all run over by an oncoming train. Emergency services were called out at around 7.30am local time (8.30am mainland Spain time) by the driver of another train who saw their bodies on the track. It is thought the convoy which ran them over had passed through the station at around 1.00am local time (2.00am mainland Spain time) on its way back to the depot, meaning it was probably empty. Alberto, who held joint Spanish and US nationality, had moved to the UK

No early election as Spain’s new PM wants to serve to 2020 Pedro Sánchez, who became prime minister of Spain after successfully leading a no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy, on Monday unveiled that he plans to serve out the rest of the term until June 2020. In his first interview since his inauguration on 2nd June, the leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) said that the decision not to call early elections is based on the need to “normalise” the country’s political life. “I plan to call elections in 2020, when the term of office ends, so yes, I will serve out the term,” said Sánchez on the state broadcaster TVE. At the no-confidence debate in Congress, Sánchez had suggested that he might call a snap election because the motion was essentially aimed at unseating Mariano Rajoy, whose Popular Party (PP) had come under renewed fire after a damning ruling in a sweeping graft case known as Gürtel. The PP, now in the opposition, and the reform party Ciudadanos have been repeatedly asking Sánchez when he is

going to call new elections. But his newly appointed ministers have said that they need time to enact their own policies. Catalonia The extra time that Sánchez seeks in order to “normalize” public life has a lot to do with Catalonia, where a breakaway attempt last year plunged Spain into its biggest political crisis in decades. Sánchez recently revealed plans for a meeting with Catalan premier Quim Torra in early July. The move seeks to restore frayed relations between Madrid and Barcelona. A unilateral independence declaration in late October triggered a suspension of autonomous powers in Catalonia, which came under direct rule by the central government until a new Catalan government was elected and inducted into office. Sánchez said he thought it would be reasonable to transfer Catalan politicians currently in pre-trial detention on rebellion charges to penitentiaries in Catalonia, once the investigation phase of the case

ends. This would affect people like Oriol Junqueras, leader of the separatist Catalan Republican Left (ERC) party, who is in custody in Madrid awaiting trial over his role in the breakaway attempt. “It is reasonable to transfer separatist prisoners to Catalan prisons when the investigation period is considered to be completed,” said Sánchez. The PM insisted that he is not paying back the separatist parties who backed his no-confidence motion in Congress, as his critics have claimed. The PSOE, which only has 84 seats in the 350-seat chamber, was forced to seek support from the leftist Podemos and from regional groups, including the two separatist parties that led the Catalan secession push and which hold several seats in Spanish Congress. Immigration Sánchez also addressed concerns about an open-door policy on immigration in the wake of Spain’s decision to accept the 630 migrants aboard the Aquarius, a rescue ship that was turned away by

Italy and Malta. “We are not going to open up our borders,” said Sánchez, describing the decision to welcome the Aquarius as a humanitarian act to prevent numerous deaths. The Socialist leader added that the European Union needs to be coordinated on immigration: “We need to craft a common policy and cooperation with countries of origin as well as transit countries.” Sánchez said he will take this demand to the meeting of the European Council later this month, and that he will discuss it with French President Emmanuel Macron this Saturday in Paris. The Spanish PM said he is aware that hundreds of migrants are reaching the coast of Andalusia on rubber dinghies, while many others are attempting to cross into the Spanish exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the northern coast of Africa. “Borders can be protected without hurting human beings,” he said. “We have signed many human rights agreements with international agencies,

and we want to respect them.” Sánchez said that he has already met with Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias to discuss the possibility of a common agenda on social issues. As for the PP, he said that he is “respectfully” waiting to see who will replace Rajoy as party leader after the latter announced that he was stepping down. Controversial minister “I probably would not have appointed him,” said Sánchez when asked about Màxim Huerta, the shortest-lived minister in Spain’s democratic history. Huerta stepped down just six days after taking office when it emerged that he was recently ordered by a court to pay €365,000 in unpaid taxes and fines. He had used a company to claim deductions on his work as a TV journalist and writer, and these deductions included the purchase and upkeep of a vacation home on the Mediterranean coast.

AP-7 to be toll-free, pledges minister Spain’s new minister of public works, José Luis Ábalos has announced plans to scrap the tolls on three motorways when their franchises come up for renewal this year and next. The previous national government had pledged to do so, but appeared to be backtracking, and other promises relating to essential transport infrastructure and highway safety have been systematically broken, leaving local councils and residents sceptical and disillusioned. Both have been clamouring for well over 15 years for the AP-7 to become toll-free or bypasses built - as well as the tolls costing more than the petrol for the same journey, long-distance lorry drivers avoid it to cut costs, clogging up town centres all along the east coast. Running from Tarragona to Alicante with a break in the middle, the two stretches motorists have to pay to use is a total 378 kilometres. The northern half runs down from Reus (Tarragona province) to south of Castellón, taking in popular coastal towns such as Peñíscola, Vinaròs, Tortosa and San Carlos de la Ràpita, whilst the southern part starts at

Almussafes to the south of Valencia and ends in San Vicente del Raspeig, between Benidorm and Alicante. The full Alicante-Valencia stretch costs over €25 in tolls each way – an average of €2 to €3 per exit - whilst a standard family car would only need about €20 in petrol for the same

journey. Although over 19,000 drivers use each half of the AP-7 per year, this is a drastic reduction on A decade ago due to constant price rises. Its franchise is due to expire on New Year's Eve in 2019, meaning the dawn of the new decade will now come with tollfree road travel along the coast of four provinces. The AP-4 franchise ends on the same day, meaning no more charges from January 1, 2020 to get from Dos Hermanas, south of

Sevilla to Puerto Real, near Chiclana de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz, passing through Utrera and Jerez de la Frontera. Both these are covered by the toll firm Abertis through its holding AUMAR. Earlier, the AP-1 between Burgos and Armiñón on the southern border of the Basque Country is due to expire on 30th November this year, and will not be renewed. Its 84kilometre stretch was used daily by 19,950 drivers last year. Once these motorway stretches pass back into public hands, they will cost the central government around €37.6 million a year in maintenance, previously paid for from toll fees. But this cost is likely to be offset by reduced maintenance requirements on secondary roads, especially national highways passing through towns which bear the weight of lorries and other long-distance traffic that they are not designed for. Also, it could lead to reduced healthcare costs as residents who bear the brunt of tollavoiding drivers are no longer affected by unsafe levels of noise and air pollution.

Officials target 'alcohol tourism' in Mallorca poster drive Local authorities on Spain's holiday Island of Mallorca have put up 20 posters warning of heavy penalties for nudity, fighting and other alcohol-fuelled misbehaviour, it was announced on Wednesday. Revellers in the Balearic tourist town of Magaluf can be fined up to 500 euros (ÂŁ440; $580) for drinking in the street and 400 euros if they strip off or "shout, fight or bother" people, brightly coloured posters say with the hashtag #havefunwithrespect. A statement issued by the council said the banners, in English and Spanish, had been

put up to "encourage citizenship" in spots known for loutish behaviour. "The campaign is aimed at young people who usually walk these streets," the statement said, adding it wanted to reduce "alcohol tourism". The popular resort of Magaluf is known for attracting young party-goers -- mainly from Britain and Ireland -- to its beaches, bars and nightclubs. However, the local authorities have begun to clamp down on anti-social behaviour in recent years, imposing fines running into hundreds of euros.

In 2017, 785 complaints were filed for drinking alcohol in the street. Sanctions given to revellers walking around naked or halfnaked in unauthorised spaces were issued 68 times. The penalties displayed on the posters were announced in March.

Same day delivery from El Corte Ingles Nationwide department store El Corte InglĂŠs has launched a website through which any products can be ordered and delivered the same day. Adapted for mobile phones as well as computers, laptops and tablets, the web allows customers to do their grocery shopping online and get the goods the same day.

Until now, only certain gourmet products, clothing, electronics and books could be delivered on the day of ordering, with an 'express' courier service for a fee which guaranteed the order would be received within two hours. Customers can choose the day and time slot they prefer with each order, or use the new

'Click&Car' feature. This lets them collect their shopping from two hours after ordering via a drive-through system which does not even involve having to park and get out. The new services are aimed at competing with national and global online retail giants such as Amazon, Carrefour and Glovo.

Sports investment The Councillor for Sports of the City of Orihuela, Víctor Valverde, has announced several different investments recently made by the department in several municipal sports facilities – including Orihuela Costa - to the tune of 100,000 euros. During the last weeks a number of improvement have been carried out at the sports facilities of Orihuela Costa, and in particular, the sport sites in Punta Prima, Cabo Roig and La Regia, which will be completed in the coming days with the cleaning work and elimination of weeds, the repair and replacement of fences, basketball hoops, replacing stolen goals and nets, as well as the raking and the cleaning of the petanque courts in Punta Prima and La Regia.

"For this work we have allocated a team of two people that will almost permanently, remain on the Coast of Orihuela for cleaning and maintenance of these sports areas throughout the year," explained the Councillor. The councillor also announced several investments for a total of up to 100,000 euros, some of them which have been requested by people who use these facilities on a daily basis, among which is the adaptation to the regulations of the electrical installation at the municipal field of soccer and the replacement of the water deposit for the irrigation, "which is in very bad state and taking advantage of the end of season, now is the right time to allow for the old system to be replaced without

The Councillor announces investments

causing too much disruption", this will cost approximately 39,000 euros. Similarly, the council will install a dehumidifier for the spa and jacuzzi area of the Palacio del Agua, "an element that allows to maintain certain levels of humidity in the air and that will involve the installation of a new machine", including in the same contract the improvement of the hot water system in the Municipal Sports Centre of Orihuela Costa, at a cost of 27,000 euros. To these actions is added the investment of 20,000 euros for the repair of fences in the sports facilities of El Palmeral, Playas de Orihuela and Raiguero de Bonanza and the re-marking of the lines of play in the soccer field of La Murada.

influence The progressive increase in drug controls is a consequence of the high percentage of drivers who drive under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. During a special campaign that ran from 4th to 10th June, the DGT traffic department has revealed that 450 drivers were detected having consumed alcohol or drugs every day, almost 19 every hour. During the campaign, the Guardia Civil stopped 173.783 drivers and carried out alcohol and / or drugs tests. According to DGT, the progressive increase in drug controls is a consequence of the high percentage of drivers who drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol, since, according to the latest report on the Study of the Prevalence of drug and alcohol consumption of vehicles in Spain (EDAP ), 12 percent of randomly chosen drivers tested positive for alcohol and drugs above the legal limits. Of the 4,469 drugs tests that were carried out on drivers who had displayed signs or symptoms of having ingested a substance, committed a violation or

being involved in an incident, 1,461 were positive, which is 33 percent of the total. Among the drugs most commonly used by these drivers are cannabis (1,047 cases), cocaine (498 cases) and amphetamines (178 cases). With regard to alcohol, 174,689 blood alcohol control tests were carried out and 1,774 drivers tested positive. Of these, 1,547 were detected in preventive controls, 130 after having committed an offence, another 90 for being involved in an incident and 7 more for presenting obvious symptoms of alcohol intake. Of the 1,774 drivers who tested positive for alcohol, 239 have had their cases presented to the courts for exceeding the rate of 0.60 mg / l in exhaled air. In addition, cases against 11 drivers have been brought to justice for refusing to carry out alcohol tests. To both of these figures, once collated, we must also add the number of controls and detections carried out by local and regional police, who supported the Guardia Civil during the campaign.

Ways to jump start your summer weight loss Make a moment for breakfast Skipping meals won't make you lose weight faster, so fill up in the morning and start your day off on the right foot. Blend together a 1/3 cup whole-grain oats, a tablespoon of nut butter, and fresh or frozen fruit the night before. Let that sit in the fridge and 'cook' overnight. In the morning, you'll have a creamy smoothie bowl that'll fill you up with fibre, protein, and healthy fat. Learn a new move Break out of your gym rut by brushing up on some quick exercises beyond the usual crunches. Renegade rows, anyone? Set a timer on your phone for two minutes and count how many reps you bust out; then see if you can beat that number the next time around. Eat more spaghetti Vegetable noodles, that is. Spiralised courgettes, carrots, beetroots, or squash can sub in for regular ol' spaghetti at just a fraction of the calories. Short on time? You can pick up pre-prepped versions from the supermarket. Sign up for a race Set a goal with a built-in deadline and you'll feel more motivated to lace up your sneakers on the reg. Recruit a friend to walk a 5K together or register for a local trail run for a change of scenery. Wake up with water Drink 16 ounces of water when you wake up. Optimising hydration early in the day gets your day off on the right foot. Then sip water regularly throughout the day, especially in Spain.

Buy a set of 5-pound weights Strength training builds lean muscle – and thus, burns more calories, even when you're sleeping, says London. Do bicep curls, triceps pulls, squats, and lunges. Grill your veggies Grilling veggies means less opportunity for food to be dripping in oil or deep fried. Plus, the BBQ adds a boost of smoky flavour. Veggies taste so different grilled, you'll want to load them on your plate. Use your iPhone to measure portions Make sure when you're eating meat or grains, your portion looks roughly the size of your iPhone, which will be about five ounces. It's a good visual gauge for keeping serving sizes in check. Pack in the pre-biotics You've heard of probiotics, but prebiotics supply a type of fibre that probiotics love to feast on, so they're key for a healthy bloat-free gut. Try artichokes, asparagus, and bananas. Use a pretty plate every time you eat The trick can serve as a reminder to slow down, sit down, and think about what you're eating. Besides, it makes every eating occasion a little bit more special. Relax more Everyone has stress, but chronic stress can make you more prone to weight gain. Doing things that make you happy

– like watching the sunset or chatting with a friend – can help you stay calm. Have a morning latte Opt for a low-, non-fat, or soya latte as part of your breakfast. This can give you about 13 grams of protein in a 16-ounce beverage, which is great for rounding out a small breakfast. Add produce to every meal and snack Throw a handful of spinach into your omelette, add sliced cucumbers and bell peppers to your sandwich, or pair a plum with trail mix. Fresh produce – fruit and veg - is loaded with nutrients and fibre, helping you fill up. Cultivate a summer workout playlist Whether you like Beyonce or Coldplay, listening to the music you love can prompt you to push harder in your workout (without feeling like you are) and go longer. Win! Add a wine cube to your water Dropping in a frozen cube of wine into your cup of sparkling water or club soda is a great way to feel like you're sipping something special without drinking a ton of calories. Have lunch al fresco Listening to the birds, feeling the breeze, and basking in the warm summer sun can keep you mindful as you eat, which forces you to slow down and truly enjoy the meal.

The season isn't known for its great TV, so skip it altogether. Go outside instead: take a bike ride, people watch from your front porch, or take your dog to the park. Serve dinner out of reach Rather than putting food out on the dining room table family-style, serve from the kitchen, suggests research from Cornell University. It helps prevent mindless picking and eating seconds when you're not really hungry. Scan the label Know what's in your food by reading nutrition labels at the supermarket. Ditch your gum habit While chewing gum can be a great way to sidestep sweet cravings, the sugar alcohols (ingredients ending in 'ol' on the label) can make some people feel bloated. Know which camp you're in, and skip it if necessary. Make fruit the star of dessert Try sweet treats such as: banana split (sliced banana with a tablespoon of nut butter and sprinkle of chocolate chips), baked apples in the microwave, or berries with a dollop of ice cream. You can also grill peaches, pineapple, and plums for a twist on dessert. Add summer heat Spicy peppers and red chilli flakes contain capsaicin, a compound linked to weight loss, says London. Grill up whole peppers on the grill, spice up guacamole and salsa, or throw chilli flakes into a marinade for meat.

Skip summer TV

Read a beach book before bed Take a few minutes and flip open a light summer read. Good sleep is associated with maintaining a healthy weight, and a good wind-down routine with an easy book can help lull you to dreamland. Take a minute to sprint Doing short minute-long bouts of high-intensity intervals has been shown to improve health just as much as a longer workout, according to 2016 research. Don't be afraid to push yourself! Grow an herb garden Basil, rosemary, and mint are all delicious adds to boost the freshness of any meal. Gardening is also a bona fide exercise: 30 minutes 'counts' as a moderate-intensity workout. Try a toast-toppings flip Fruits and veggies are the new bread! Use apple slices as sandwich bread for nut butter, roast sweet potato slices and top with almond butter, or scoop out a kiwi and add cottage cheese. Shop at the farmers' market Discovering new-to-you fresh produce that's in season will make summer eating exciting. Try crispy kohlrabi, experiment with fava beans, and buy mulberries. And remember: always ask for samples. Walk after dinner A 10-minute stroll after each meal can help reduce blood sugar levels more effectively compared to walking a 30minute block each day, shows research. Get outside and enjoy the day.

Sunscreen Summer has finally arrived and for anyone sensible this means upping the SPF factor in your skincare even on cloudy days. Most people know that sun protection is imperative not only for preventing things like premature aging but, and more importantly, also reducing the risk of developing life-threatening diseases such as skin cancer. However, although all protection is of course good, what most

people don’t realise is that there are SPF products that are a better choice for your skin than others. Sunscreens you’ll typically pick up in a supermarket or local pharmacy, while protectant, are often packed with strong chemicals that lie-on or absorb-into your skin. This can create surface-level dryness, reactions and discolouration and if absorbed can actually mean the cream and accompanying toxins are absorbed

into your bloodstream and have to be filtered by your liver. Moreover, one of the most notably dangers of chemical SPF is that they typically contain hormone and endocrine disruptors. Most dangerous in small doses, as they are in chemical sunscreens, these disruptors essentially mimic the hormones our body naturally produces daily and can result in triggering cancerous tumours, birth defects, and other developmental disorders as well as interfering with our metabolisms and reproductive systems. Essentially, chemical sunscreens, containing the likes of oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, homosalate and octinoxate, work by absorbing the sun’s harmful UV rays whereas mineral or natural based creams simply deflect them. So, how do you know what to shop for when it comes to skincare this summer? Firstly, opt for 100 percent mineral products rather than mineral-based, this often means they’re only part nonchemical. Mineral creams will list zinc and/or titanium dioxide active ingredient only. All the sunscreen you use should be broad spectrum as an absolute rule which means you’ll be protected from both UVA and UVB rays.

Collagen fact or fiction If you believe the hype there is one ingredient that can smooth out your wrinkles, keep your skin hydrated, and make you look more baby-faced than a toddler. Well, according to every #influencer and wellness-obsessed celeb, that ingredient is collagen powder. They're blending it into smoothies, stirring it into oatmeal and coffee, and even

taking it as "shots." Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and the main building block for skin. It gives skin its youthful suppleness and is one of the key components in repairing wounded skin. Simply put, it gives good face. It would be nice if you could simply toss a scoop of collagen into your morning smoothie—and bam!—your

skin starts to look smoother. But it's too good to be true. Most studies of oral collagen are not rigorous enough to draw conclusions about their effect on skin health, appearance, or aging. It’s thought that the collagen, when taken orally, is broken down into what is essentially protein, and then absorbed by the body. So when your body digests collagen, it gets broken down and doesn't reach the skin as actual collagen. If you have dry skin, you'll be interested in one study that may suggest that ingestible collagen can benefit skin hydration in people over the age of 30 and slow the formation of deep wrinkles. Collagen supplement pills are an expensive habit to maintain for zero proven benefits. People think that if you eat or drink something, it goes right to the skin, but it doesn’t work that way. There’s no peer-reviewed data to show that oral collagen supplements directly lead to an improvement in the collagen in your skin. The same goes for collagen creams. Dermatologists say that the collagen molecule is too large to be absorbed through the skin. So skip on creams that contain collagen, too. The only proven way to boost skins collagen is in one word: retinoids. These derivatives of vitamin A have been shown to increase collagen production in the skin. The antioxidant vitamin C also helps promote collagen production in the skin. Look for it in a moisturiser or in a serum.

Denise via email asks: Hello Aunty. A couple of months ago my hubby treated me to a new Dell laptop but recently I’ve had a constant notification that my trial version of McAfee Security has expired but I don’t remember ever signing up for a free trial and I certainly don’t want to pay for something I haven’t requested. Would you consider it a good product and would it be safe to pay for it over the internet? I am a bit green with computers so please explain in a simple language. Aunty Says: Hi Denise. The free trial of MacAfee could have been pre-installed on your laptop or it could have sneaked its way onto your computer when you install or update your Adobe Reader app. I’ve always been a big fan of Microsoft’s Defender which comes pre-bundled with Windows 8.1 and 10 and is free so no need to purchase anything over the Internet. You will first need to uninstall McAfee using the “Apps & Features” function (start icon and type APPS into the search box) and Windows Defender should then take over as your antivirus program. You should also install the free Malwarebytes or Superantispyware. Val from La Marina asks: Hi Aunty. I stupidly downloaded a free PDF file converter and now it seems my Google browser has been taken over by something called ‘My Web Search’. Is

there an easy way to get rid of it and back to my Yahoo page? Aunty Says: Hi Val. You may be lucky and find that this annoying hijacker hasn’t already buried itself too deeply into Windows. In Chrome click on the 3 small dots in the top right corner and go to “settings” and under the “On start up” section click on the “Set Pages” link and make sure www.yahoo.com is the only entry. Also go down to the ‘Search’ section and click on the ‘Manage Search Engines’ button and add Yahoo and delete any other entries. I would strongly recommend a full scan with Malwarebytes and your favourite Antivirus program just to be sure.

scan last week it now comes up in Spanish, and although I can get by it’s the spell checker that is annoying me as it is constantly showing errors and it tries to change English words to Spanish words. Can you please tell me if I can force it back to English? Aunty Says: Hi Mark. Probably the easiest way is to use www.google.co.uk (rather than .com or .es) as this will force the English version, and Gmail and most search results will then be the UK ones. Windows and Chrome both check your location and choose what language accordingly and as .com sites are global this will cause this kind of problem.
