School accused of sexism in dress code The dispute at Torrevigía school is around what is acceptable for girls to wear to their classes.

T

he no. 5 secondary school in Torrevieja has taken a firm stand. Girls can’t wear shorts or skirts above the knee. However, many students at the school and their parents are unhappy with the decision. As we look towards temperatures next week of 30 degrees, the only option for most girls is to come to school in trousers or long skirts. Boys on the other hand seem to be exempt from the ‘above the knee’ ruling and continue to turn up in shorts of any length. Arriving at school at 8am, it has been reported that the students have been monitored for their school wear with the headteacher, caretaker and a teacher standing at the entrance selecting any girl who they considered was not appropriately

dressed. They were then sent to the library whilst other girls were allowed to continue with their studies in the normal way. Some parents are also up in arms at the segregation which they consider is also having an impact on their daughters’ education. They are effectively being excluded from their lessons during the crucial autumn term. They claim that it is unrealistic for the management of the school to expect girls to attend in trousers or skirts below the knee when temperatures are in the 30s. Objections have been raised to the manner in which the girls are vetted for appropriateness. Some feel that there has been very little objective comparison with some girls randomly being pulled out and others allowed to continue with their studies. Another objection is that teachers don’t have to follow the same dress code. At the time of going to press there had been a call for students to come in shorts or skirts on Monday 24th and protest at the entrance

to the school. Spanish schools generally do not have school uniforms unlike schools in the UK, where strict uniform rules are normal. In June this year a teachers in Vega Baja secondary school in Callosa de Segura refused entry to a girl who was wearing ‘inappropriate clothing’. The student was considered to be wearing shorts that were too short. By taking a firm line on this, the headteacher at Torrevigía has secured support from those wanting to see firm discipline in schools. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE NEWS:

Donald Trump advises Spain to build wall in Sahara desert

A rubbish tip continues to welcome students and teachers to the Mediterranean secondary school on the avenida de Tenerife. For a decade this area has been used by people as an unofficial dump and is now the site of abandoned construction material, old furniture and the remnants of garden pruning. The area is one of many in Torrevieja, that was abandoned by the builders during the crisis and the project was never properly completed. The result is an area of land that is claimed by no one and continues to be an attraction for anyone looking to get rid of their waste. The debate about who is actually responsible goes backwards and forwards and has crossed over from one local government to the next. What can be seen clearly is that there are legal loop holes here that prevent the proper care of the environment.

Town hall works begin again The extension of Torrevieja’s town hall has been on hold following disagreements with the construction company who were doing the work. With 80 percent of the project completed some of the technical aspects of the improvements were questioned and the work was Continued on page 5

The minister revealed Trump’s Saharan wall ‘solution’ during a lunch in Madrid. Borrell made it clear that he disagreed with Trump’s diagnosis but insisted a policy was needed to deal with the fact that Africa would double its population in the next 20 years. Borrell also attacked Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini for turning away a boatload of more than 600 African refugees in June and leaving Spain to deal with it. CVMm440A

Quiet summer on the beaches of Orihuela The councillor for beaches, Luisa Boné, has given an end of season summary on the issues dealt with by Ambumar SyA. This is the company which has been providing lifeguard and rescue services on the beaches of Orihuela during the summer season, which officially runs from 15th June to 15th September. According to the statistics, most of the assistance provided was connected to health issues, such as jellyfish stings and rescue of bathers. In terms of jellyfish stings, the beaches where most incidents were recorded were Cala Bosque with 437 and in Cala Capitán with 367, with Cala Mosca having the least incidents with 77. In total the teams made just 10 rescues this year, of which 5 were at in Cala Bosque, so it has been a quiet summer compared to last year and seasonal

3

averages, despite the large influx of beach-goers and bathers who enjoyed all the Orihuela Costa has to offer. On the four beaches where the adapted bathing facilities were provided, a total of 133 services have been carried out. This service has been used most on the beach at Barranco Rubio with 81 assists, followed by La Glea with 49, Cala Bosque with 3 and there were no requests for the service at Cala Capitán. The Department for Beaches has, for the second year running, extended the rescue and lifesaving service to include all weekends - Saturdays and Sundays - until 14th October across all of the beaches of Orihuela Costa. The Councillor wanted to “congratulate the company providing the rescue and first aid service for the work that has been undertaken."

Unofficial dump is an eyesore

Donald Trump has suggested Spain should build a wall across the Sahara desert in a bid to bring migrant numbers down. According to foreign minister Josep Borrell, the US president insisted the barrier would help tackle Europe’s migrant crisis. Borrell did not reveal when the leader floated the idea, but sources suggest it was in June, when Borrell visited Washington during the White House visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia.

BA FLIGHT GETS INTO DIFFICULTY OVER ALICANTE A British Airways Airbus from Alicante to London Gatwick was involved in an emergency situation last week, when the plane´s landing gear wouldn´t retract after takeoff. Flight BA2631, the 10:55 departure on Tuesday 18 September, took off without apparent incident, until moments later when the crew tried to retract the landing gear. The crew stopped their ascent at 6,000 feet and

requested holding over the sea near Alicante whilst they tried to work through procedures to rectify the fault, but as they were unable to fix the problem the crew requested a return to Alicante, where the plane landed safely an hour after departure, without the emergency services being required. Passengers finally left the airport on a replacement aircraft almost 10 hours later, arriving at Gatwick at 11:51pm.

Medicines in short supply Some popular medicines are currently in short supply in the Alicante region. Altogether there are supply problems with 382 different types of medicines. Some of these are ones that are very popular and are used regularly by a large number of people. One of these is Adiro which is prescribed to people who have had a heart attack, a stroke or angina. It’s also needed for patients who have had heart surgery. On the website this drug is currently under ‘controlled distribution as there are limited supplies available.’ The reason? In this particular case the official reason is that the company that produces the drug is currently having its manufacturing plant renovated and so manufacture is limited at the moment. Other medication that is missing off the shelves include Nolotil capsules as well as in its injectable form. This is used for high level pain relief usually after surgery and is also prescribed for colic and for pain relief in cancer patients. It is also used to treat fever when patients do not respond to other drugs. In the case of Nolotil it is the manufacture of its active ingredient, metamizole, that is causing the difficulties. In another case, medication has been taken off the shelves because of concerns about its safety. The department of health has ordered the removal in recent months of hundreds of medications that

include valsartan as an active ingredient. However, if you are used to using one of the medications mentioned here you should not panic. Similar generic products are also available and can do the same job as those that hold branded names. They’re also usually cheaper. So if you do notice a change in the name of your prescribed medication it could be for this reason and is no need for concern. However, the changes can cause some inconvenience as if the prescribed brand is not available at the chemists then the patient must return to the family doctor and have the prescription changed. Chemists would like to see the procedure for doing this improved so that they can communicate directly and electronically with the health centre to make the necessary changes. Other reasons given for the short supply of some medication include problems in laboratories, shortage of raw materials and even errors in the instructions or packaging. Another reason that’s been given is the low cost of medication in Spain. One person who does not wish to be named, claims that because other countries sell their medication at a higher price, laboratories are more likely to sell their products to them. So, for example, acyclovir which costs 3.4 euros in Spain costs 30 euros in England. Talks are expected to be held later this year to look at the situation and patients will be hoping that any shortage will not be met by an increase in prices. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Concerns over firearms storage NEWS: Continued from page 3 suspended. Now, following clarification and more than a year later, the work can begin again. The improvements include changes to the entrance area as well as an additional building. The building will house some of the services which are currently taking place in other locations and for which the town council must pay rent. In the long term it is expected that the new premises will mean a saving for the council. However, the work has been plagued by a number of hold-ups to do with payment of licence fees during July when personnel were unavailable in the Prop office.

Truancy on the agenda A group appointed to address the issue of truancy in the town’s schools met on 18th September to announce the publication of a report in October about the problem. There will also be a project aimed at reducing the number of children and young people who are absent from school on a regular basis. Monthly meetings will be held to look at the progress of the programme. The report will aim to diagnose the reasons why young people don’t attend school in order to find solutions to it. One of the first steps that has been taken is identifying where children have not been enrolled in school in the first place. Now attention is turned to those who are registered but decide not to turn up.

The beaches are back in business After the rain and floods of Saturday 15th September, urgent action was needed to bring the beaches back up to standard as the weather improved once again. Altogether nearly 40 lorries carrying sand were brought in to restore Torrevieja’s sea front. Around 30 litres of rain had fallen in 30 minutes and had caused serious damage to the sand and beach furniture. The councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, wanted to say thank you to those workers who responded so quickly to put the beaches to rights. Six hundred cubic metres of sand was transported to the beaches of El Cura, Los Locos and Los Náufragos. Many items of beach furniture also needed to be replaced and pipes needed mending. The prompt response was made possible due to beach sand having already been cleaned and prepared to replace what was missing.

Tourist train to continue into October It has been a very popular feature of the town. The train which sets off from its stop opposite the casino, is often full as it takes its passengers on their tour of the salt works. It is estimated that altogether 14,800 people have taken advantage of the tours since mid July and demand continues. Now it has been announced that the train will continue into October. The trip takes less than an hour altogether and passengers get to see Continued on page 8

It’s an accident waiting to happen according to the police officers union. The firearms that are available for the Local Police to use are stored, not in a specialised area or armoury, but in the hall of the locker room. It has been alleged that only recently a gun went off by accident and that a bullet hole in the hallway remains as testimony that this practice is not to be recommended. The main risk occurs when the officers change their shift. Each officer, except for interns, has their own firearm. When they have finished their shift they must remove and dismantle it. On 18th September according to reports, during this process an accidental shot was fired. The outcome

could have been fatal. The corridor is a busy area during shift changes and unions are now claiming that they have been demanding improvements in the system of storing firearms for years. They are asking for the storage area for these weapons to be changed and for a security drawer to be made available where firearms can be handled safely. If one does accidently go off then the bullet is contained rather than risking injury through rebound. It is claimed that this deficiency in firearm security was reported in 2015. Apparently this occasion is not the first time that a shot has escaped by accident. Suzanne O’Connell

Iberdrola to improve infrastructure Iberdrola, the electricity supplier, is putting into operation plans to renovate more than eight kilometres of medium voltage underground cables in Torrevieja at a cost of 1.3 million euros. This work will allow them to increase the quality of electricity supply delivered in the town. The announcement was made by the councillor for works and services, Domingo Soler. The company will begin soon with the first 12 works replacing underground wiring in 36 streets in the town. It is expected that altogether the work will take three months to complete.

The manager of Iberdrola in the province, César Calomarde emphasised the importance of making these improvements. ‘It will increase the quality of the electricity supply,’ he explained. Iberdrola distribute electricity to more than 126,000 supply points. In addition, there are plans to build a new substation from which new medium voltage lines will be launched. Currently the network is being supported by substations in Campoamor, San Miguel, Los Montesinos and Rojales. Suzanne O’Connell

Why do the streets still flood? Thousands of euro has been spent on digging trenches in many parts of Torrevieja to contain the flood water. But still, on Saturday 15th September, many

work? Canals and ditches have been constructed to take excess water since 2014. Had they not been constructed then the flooding would have been far worse.

streets across the town became impassable and damage was done to property and transport. One litre of water per square metre of ground fell every second, totalling 30 in half an hour. Between 7.30am and 8am 31.2 litres per square metre had been recorded. Not surprisingly it did not take long for the canals running parallel to the natural lakes to be full. From the avenida de las Cortes Valencianas up to the avenida de Delfina Viudes, the roads were impassable and traffic at a stand still. For more than 20 minutes the water continued to flood this area around the N332 and as far as access to the Ozone commercial centre and Carrefour. The Guardia Civil had to rescue five drivers from their cars. However, this is not a new situation and public money has been spent to try and remedy the problem. Why did it not

However, there are also those who argue that some of the measures taken have, in fact, just moved the problem elsewhere. There are still more proposals on the table for how to alleviate the town’s flooding problems. A channel running parallel to the N332 down to the sea, is one suggestion. It’s not just nature, however, that we can blame for the state of flooding in Torrevieja. The fact remains that the huge amount of residential building in and around the town over a period of four decades is also responsible for the problems we encounter now. Previously there was more soil to absorb the rain water. Following the boom in house building this was replaced by large amounts of asphalt. In the rush to build, little thought was given to the problems this would cause for those buying here. Suzanne O’Connell

Torture verdict anticipated We have now reached the final stage in the court proceedings against seven police officers accused of torturing two detainees. The robbers had been arrested following a break in at the house of one of the police officers. The case has been ongoing for 12 years during which it has been suspended six times. It is a private prosecution that is being pursued by the Association for Human Right of Spain. The two robbers no longer live here but are currently in South America which is one of the reasons why the case has taken so long to come to a close. Now, the latest news is that the potential sentence, if the policemen are found guilty, has been reduced from two years to 17 months. Also, the case against two of those accused has been

dropped. Now, the remaining defendants wait for the conclusions of the court. One of the uncertainties in the case has been whether the tapes of conversations at the time can be used as evidence. The recordings seem to support the Guardia Civil statements that they were called on to transfer the detainees to hospital with injuries that included a broken rib. The Guardia are recorded in a discussion about the problems there will be in taking the detainees to hospital because of how the injuries were sustained. It is also alleged that documents and records were changed to try and make it look as though the injuries were as a result of a fall down stairs. Now it is up to the court to decide. Second edition of “The Winter Beach” hits Orihuela Costa Saturday saw the start of the second edition of “The Winter Beach” at La Caleta in Cabo Roig. The beaches of Orihuela are the perfect environment for of the 23 water, sports and family activities that have been organised by the Department for Beaches and the Department of Youth to run through the autumn and winter season. Luisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches said that "after the high levels of participation in the first edition of " The

Weekend family fun

Winter Beach " which was held last spring, we are running more activities this autumn, taking advantage of the magnificent climate of our area, to be able to continue enjoying activities in the best setting we have, our beaches. " Every Sunday, from 10:00am, you can practice paddle boarding, canoeing, aerobic activities – such as aerobics, yoga, body balance. And so that parents can relax and enjoy these activities without worrying about keeping the children entertained there are children's workshops for them during the morning. On Saturday, 22nd September, 29th and the 2nd October, an introduction to diving has been organised to allow locals to experience and enjoy the marine environment of the coast. Mar Ezcurra Councilor for Youth said: “The activities are free and will be reported every week through the Facebook pages of the Councils of Beaches and Youth in the calendar and the corresponding activities. These are activities that enhance leisure on weekends on the coast of Orihuela and also aims to educate people in the conservation, respect and protection of the environment."

Real Calendar Girl drops in There was much excitement in the camp when Tricia Stewart attended a rehearsal of Calendar Girls at the Cardinal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio last week. ACTS are staging Tim Firth’s play on the 18th, 19th and 20th of October and Tricia – one of the original Calendar Girls - had generously offered to fly to Spain to help promote the production. A luncheon was arranged in her honour at The Portobello Kitchen in Villamartin and a gala dinner at La Cosecha in Benijofar, both of which were fully subscribed and those attending were entertained afterwards with Tricia’s account of the real Calendar

Girls story, which was both moving and hilarious. There was also an informal ‘Meet Tricia Stewart’ event at Brown’s Cocktail Bar in La Zenia, following a fashion show at the neighbouring Looking Good Boutique. The original idea for the famous WI nude calendar was Tricia’s, and it is her character that is played in the film by Helen Mirren. BITE SIZE Legal inquiry into ex- What a busy August! NEWS: mayor halts alliance Continued from page 5 the industrial salt works, the pink lake and they can listen to an explanation of how it all works.

Parking on Ramón Gallud A report has been issued on parking restrictions in calle Ramón Gallud. A previous system had allowed parking limited to an hour along this busy stretch of road in the centre of the town. However, the system did not work as it was impossible for the police to know how long cars had been parked there with any certainty. As a result, the local council decided to prohibit cars from parking there, a decision that local traders were not happy with. Now, this report is examining the possibility of limited parking again but within a controlled system.

International tapas day International tapas day will be held in Torrevieja on 29th September 2018. On Saturday you will be able to buy a tapas and a drink for €2.50. The day is being organised by AEHT and includes both lunchtime and evening menus. Many favourite town centre bars and restaurants are taking part and more details about those included can be found on the Shopping Torrevieja website: http://shoppingtorrevieja.com/iiiinternational-tapas-day/ Suzanne O’Connell

After days of deliberation and ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ the Ciudadanos party in Torrevieja has finally announced that they will not be supporting the bid of the opposition PP party to oust the present mayor, José Manuel Dolón (below). Following the problems with paying council staff for the August period, the PP,

conducted focuses on the Vela Mata night club. It is alleged that the club was allowed to continue operating without having the necessary licences in place and in spite of the complaints and denuncias made by local residents. Eduardo Dolón is accused of falsehood and prevarication in the case which was filed by a court of instruction

under the leadership of ex-mayor Eduardo Dolón, had made a bid to topple the current four-party local government. However, they needed two additional votes to enable them to do this. One party which could have helped, Sueña Torrevieja, had already stated that they would not be involved in the coup due to a legal investigation that is currently taking place into the ex-mayor’s activities whilst mayor of the town during the previous mandate. Now, Ciudadanoshas also stated that the uncertainty over Eduardo Dolón’s past activities, prevents them from agreeing alliances too. The judicial investigation being

in Torrevieja but reopened by the Provincial court. Now, the uncertainty over the outcome of the investigations means that neither Sueña or Ciudadanos are prepared to put their backing to the PP’s proposals. It was Sueña who first declared that they could not support the PP party in their bid. Ciudadanos followed suit at the last minute following negotiations of what a deal between the PP and Ciudadanos might look like. There is only eight months to go to the next local elections. It would seem that this would be the best time for the local population of Torrevieja to have their say. Suzanne O’Connell

In August Torrevieja was home every day to around 423,000 people. How do we know? The town council take their figures from the use of municipal services. So, the amount of water used, the amount of waste collected and the increased consumption of electricity. During this period the town generated 6,222 tonnes of waste and used 1,311,438 cubic metres of water with a daily use of 42,304. The greatest consumption of water was registered between the first and second weekends of August. The figures are slightly higher than for the same period last year. It is estimated that each resident uses around 100 litres of water a day – and on this basis the figures are calculated. According to the padrón, Torrevieja has around 85,000 residents living in the town. However, it has a sizeable ‘floating’ population who are believed to take this figure up to 120,000 at different times of the year. In addition if calculations include those visiting and staying short term in the town this figure can reach as high as 320,000 people.

It might seem like an unscientific way of measuring those residing in the town. However, with such a fluctuating population, it is very difficult to use any other measure. In addition to those staying with family and friends and in rental accommodation, the town has 1,700 rooms available in its hotels. In spite of the difficulties and using the information available, the council estimate that the figures are: • June – 291,741 inhabitants • July – 382,154 inhabitants • August – 423,045 inhabitants Figures are still high in September with the first two weeks being recorded as there being 297,115 people in the town. The councillor for tourism, Fanny Serrano, has noted that the amount of rubbish produced had declined slightly over the summer months from those recorded in 2017. However, this slight drop is not great enough to be significant. Suzanne O’Connell

C.L.A.R.O calls for financial autonomy for the coast Roman Jimenez, President of C.L.A.R.O has handed a 28 page appeal against the unfair Orihuela Vs Orihuela Costa budget to the local Government, claiming the financial division between the coast and the city is unfair. For that reason, the independent political party for Orihuela Costa is demanding financial autonomy for the coast. Roman Jimenez said: “We do not think that the town of Orihuela Costa can be ruled from 33 kms away. We demand an ‘Ente Local Menor’ - to have financial autonomy - with our own councillors, own budget and own territory. Orihuela Costa residents are fed up being treated as second class citizens and not receiving the funds necessary to improve their lives. C.L.A.R.O. is campaigning on behalf of everyone living in Orihuela Costa. We want to be treated equal to residents in Orihuela city and the 27 surrounding villages.” C.L.A.R.O is calling on local residents to stop this kind of biased treatment towards costal residents by: “checking that you are on the Padron and have Residencia, making sure you have exercised your right to be on the voting register at the Padron office by the end of December to be eligible to vote in next May’s elections. And then vote!” The party believes that Ciudadanos together with PP “stabbed Orihuela Costa in the back” with the regular unfair budgets; believing that the coast gets “nothing and they get everything in Orihuela”.

 Develop a Cultural Centre to include a library, Social Activities, musical school, language school, cafe and auditorium.

C.L.A.R.O is making several demands to local Government in Orihuela provide the following, as a matter of urgency:  Completion of Emergency Centre with 24-hours cover; which is well overdue.

The deadline to register on the Padron and to vote is 31st December 2018, to qualify to choose who you want to represent you in the local elections next May, 2019, you need to register to have your say. This is only 13 weeks away - NO Vote, NO Voice. For further information visit: CLAROGRUPO.ORG or find it on facebook or twitter @claropolitico.

 Save Cala Mosca – No houses or Apartments. Create a natural area on the last parcel of land in Orihuela Costa by the Mediterranean Sea.

 Develop a Cemetery for Orihuela Costa Residents.  Increase the number of Police Officers & Patrol cars in Orihuela Costa.  Improve the local bus network system, providing timetables, overhead shelters and benches.  Repair and upgrade the drainage system for heavy rainfall.  Stop building until the infrastructure needed for the existing houses is adequate.  Increase safe dropped curbs to access Commercial Centres, shops, bars and restaurants and upgrade existing faulty dropped curbs. Make the city of Orihuela Costa safe for people with disabilities.  Move Thursday Market to a more suitable venue to stop plastic wastage floating into the sea causing serious pollution. Move Saturday Market to a more appropriate area, such as the overflow car park opposite Zenia Boulevard, which is public.

You can’t bathe here!

Regional police officers have been on patrol around the natural lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata reminding people that they are not allowed to bathe there. Many people who enjoy a dip in Torrevieja’s salt lake do not realise that they are actually prohibited from doing so. Over the past week, the regional police force has been on patrol. The area is, in fact, designated to the salt works who mine the salt from there. The police had been patrolling around calle Sol. This is the area most used for access to the lakeon the edge of the Torretas urbanisations. The reason given for clamping down on the bathers is that the machinery for collecting the salt does in fact operate close to this point and it is not a safe area for bathing. However, people have been enjoying this area for decades without incident, although it was claimed that last summer a swimmer almost collided with the machinery. It was at the end of August that the salt works requested the intervention of the

police in dissuading people from entering the lake and surrounding area. The Local Police did in fact make an appearance and spoke to more than 250 people around the 400 metres bordering the edge of the lake. However, they do not have the capacity to include this area as part of their regular patrol. Many of the people who stop by the lake are holiday makersoften from central and northern Europe and Russia. The lake is particularly attractive due to its spectacular scenery as well as the belief that its water and mud can have a therapeutic effect. The regional police force (policía autonómica) are separate from the Guardia Civil or the National Police. They are responsible for enforcing laws that have been delegated to the regional community, in this case Valencia. Their brief includes that of security, public order, shows and performances and, in some cases, traffic. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The pound did not have the best start to the week after the previous Friday’s newspapers were full of Bank of England governor Mark Carney’s suggestions that house prices would fall by 34% in the event of a no-deal Brexit. This was not the rhetoric of “project fear” as some believed, but the outcome of a stress test carried out on commercial banks to examine the potential impact of such an outcome. Higherthan-expected UK inflation data helped the pound mid-week. Data from the Office of National Statistics showed the rate rose to 2.7% in August. This is the highest level in six months and against a forecast of 2.4%. After the data were announced, the pound hit a 9week high against the US dollar and a 7-week high against the euro. The optimism for the pound was short-lived, however, as the Prime Minister cast doubt on the success of this week’s

Brexit meeting in Salzburg by spurning the EU's "improved" proposal for the internal Irish border. Overnight she threw more petrol on the fire when she said there could be no delay to Brexit, even if it meant an abrupt departure with no deal. UK retail sales rose 0.3% in August against a forecast fall of 0.2%. The pound climbed again at the news but the pound continues to be harried by the matter of Brexit and there was little cause for optimism coming from Salzburg. While the pound had a tumultuous week, the euro generally held a steadier course. There was little in the ecostats or the political sphere to move the central currency. ECB President Mario Draghi delivered the keynote speech at a conference in Berlin entitled “Making Europe's Economic Union work,” and his cautious optimism and pragmatic approach let Brexit and the pound take the biggest headlines.

If you garden in a warm climate, you can leave the tubers in the ground all winter. Your begonias will rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.

Wax begonias Typically, wax begonias are used as bedding plants. Wax begonias come in a variety of flower and leaf colours. For the most part, wax begonias have flowers that are single or doublesided, and the flowers are generally smaller than those of the tuberous begonias. However, they can vary in size, with some newer hybrids having flowers that are up to three inches in diameter. The bronze-leafed varieties are generally more tolerant of hot, sunny conditions, so keep this in mind when planting in bright sun areas. Once established, begonias are surprisingly drought tolerant, but be sure to keep new transplants well watered for the first month or so. Once the begonias start to bloom you are in for a real treat, because they will not stop blooming until cold weather sets in. If you live in a cold area, you may want to grow wax begonias in pots so you can bring them in when it gets cold. They will thrive in pots as well. Just make sure that your pots have drainage holes so that even in a pot they have well-drained soil.

Tuberous begonias As you might expect, these are grown from tubers. Many begonias will grow and flower year-round, but tuberous begonias usually have a dormant period, during which the tubers can be stored in a cool and dry place. In the spring, plant your begonia tubers in the soil, hollow side upwards. The top should be

Propagation Most begonias are easily propagated by division or from stem

just about level with the ground or dirt surface. After the first shoots emerge, you should give the plants a little water. You are likely to have flowers from early summer and into autumn, depending on where you are located. After blooming has finished for the season leave the foliage in place; don’t cut it off. The leaves will gather sunlight, create food through photosynthesis and strengthen the bulb for the future. Leaves and stalks may be removed when they yellow. Begonia tubers cannot remain in the soil over the winter in very cold climates. If you live in an area where your begonias aren’t winter hardy, dig the tubers before the first frost. Shake off any excess dirt and let them dry in a warm spot for several days. Cut off any bad spots. Then, carefully pull the roots, stems and leaves off the tuber. Wrap each tuber in a brown paper bag or wrapper and put them in a cool, dry place for the winter.

cuttings. In addition, many can be propagated from leaf cuttings or even sections of leaves.

Insect and Disease There’s great news here! Your begonias should have few if any problems with insects or disease. Begonias are prized equally for their flower as well as their showy leaves. When they are not in bloom, which is infrequent once established, their attractive, waxy green or chocolate coloured leaves show themselves off wherever you have placed them. All varieties will grow compact, dense foliage, and grow about 6-9 inches tall.

Simply pools Simply Pools was established in Spain in 2016 by Julian and Zoe. Julian has worked in the construction sector since finishing school and during the last ten years, he has worked specifically in the construction of swimming pools. Zoe has many years of experience in business administration, customer service and translation, so provides a link between English speaking clients and the building team. Alongside Julian works his younger brother Ruben, who he has trained, and also David, another skilled builder. Simply Pools is based in Torrevieja and share an office and showroom with Simply Doors.

Zoe told us, “When we started the business, our main aim was to offer a good honest service with customer satisfaction in mind at all times. We only use top quality long lasting materials specifically for the construction of swimming pools.” She continued, “Non Spanish speaking clients can easily communicate with us (with someone who is from England, not just speaks a bit of English) without the worry of anything getting lost in translation. Clients deal directly with the builder, there is no middle man or salesperson to complicate things.”

Personal data laws Personal data Laws in Spain are about to get a lot more complicated. Recent changes to the Spanish Data Protection Act (Ley de Protección de Datos or “LOPD”) and the ancillary Royal Decree that sets out security measures for personal data, implemented pursuant to EU Regulation 2016/679, has added a new level of complexity to an already intricate law. Data protection legislation has been around for many years and its main aim has been to ensure that personal data is processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner. Individuals have under these new laws many rights – rights of access to data, to have their data deleted, to be forgotten or the right to withdraw consent – just to name a few.

Ask anyone with a company and they will confirm one thing, it is an absolute minefield. As a result, companies offering advisory services on implementation and supervision of procedures have flourished – and for good reason. The fines under this new law are pretty tough: • €4,000 fine imposed on car rental company Europcar for issuing a contract with incorrect client details • €15,000 fine issued to a company for revealing excessive data of employees while negotiating work conditions with unions • €20,000 fine issued to an IT company for sending communications to a mailing list revealing the addresses listed (using cc instead of bcc)

• €60,000 imposed on an advertising company for sending commercial offers to customers whose personal details had been received without authorization and consequently, in breach of data protection laws • €1,2 million fine given to Facebook for obtaining personal information from their members about creed, gender, ideology as well as browsing data, without clearly informing them of its purpose or use Larger companies have been getting away with this for many years as in practical terms it does not greatly affect them financially. It is however the smaller businesses that need to beware such as shop owners and small offices that may be caught out and face considerable and hefty fines.

Footwork Dance at Benidorm Palace After a very successful year, Footwork Dance played its part in the biggest charity show of the year “The Palace Variety Show 2018”, in aid of the AECC and the Royal British Legion at Benidorm Palace which took place on Sunday. Earlier in the year the younger students appeared at Benidorm Palace in the show “Time to Shine” and received a great reception.

Taking part in the charity show the youngest student was six and the oldest 79, all the students had a fantastic experience, appearing at one of Europe’s largest entertainment venues with some of the region’s best known acts. Footwork, is very grateful to Stevie Spit for selecting them to appear in such a prestigious event and it is a just reward for

all the hard work and dedication to dance shown by all the students at the Studio. Footwork have started the new autumn term and are now enrolling new students , so if you are interested in taking part in any of the classes you can contact Footwork either through their web site or facebook page or by ringing Erica on 662003823.

As a father of two children himself, Steven has found this very distressing and says he needed another week's holiday to recover. A lifeguard was reportedly on duty at the time and did not respond when he saw the children in trouble, resulting in his being fired. Tartt says he was in such a state that when he returned to the UK, he had to be signed off work for another week, meaning he lost money as he is self-employed. The tour operator has reportedly refused to compensate him, but offered him counselling if he believes he could be suffering from PTSD. “[I] spoke to TUI, thought they would take some responsibility or something and at least offer something for it ruining my holiday due to the hotel they use not hiring capable staff,” Tartt says. “They have refused to take any. They won't ask the hotel to take any either as they feel it would harm the relationship with them, and lose them

Psychology (CPP), and that its 'hotel partner' had taken 'immediate and appropriate action with the staff member involved'. Steven described the incident to the Liverpool Echo soon after his return to the UK, saying he 'hurdled' over a row of chairs to reach the children, who were at the bottom of the deep end – 2.4 metres (7'10”) down – and hauled them out. Both of them were still conscious and breathing when Steven placed them on the side of the pool. “I went straight to the lifeguard to see what the hell he was doing,” said Tartt, who claimed he 'was looking at' the guard just before jumping in the pool and that he 'saw it all, but did nothing'. Under Spanish law, if a person witnesses a serious and potentially fatal incident but does not take action to help, he or she can be found guilty of the offence of 'failure to provide assistance'. This is true of amateur bystanders – such as Steven if he had ignored the children's plight – although an ordinary witness is not expected to put his or her life at risk to try to save another's; for example, if Steven had not been a strong swimmer.

Body of Irish woman found in Cartagena The body on an Irish woman has been found in the sea in Murcia. The remains of the woman were discovered floating in a cove just a few metres from the shore in the village of Isla Plana in Cartagena at around 8.40am last Sunday. According to reports in the local press her

body was spotted by someone walking near the Plaza del Mar – a popular bar and shopping area – who reported it to police. The remains were removed from the scene and she was later identified by her husband. However, this has not yet been made public, but it is believed she was 57 years old and was on holiday staying with friends at the time. Guardia Civil officers are currently investigating but no foul play is suspected. The Department of Foreign Affairs said: “We can confirm that assistance is being provided to the family of an individual who passed away in Spain.” The investigation continues.

ince moving here in 1988, the Torrevieja property market has always proven that there are two seasons to buying and selling in a year. The first season is from January to July, with the second being from September to December. This has proven to be reality yet again this year, as we have seen an increase in property sales with a bumper start to 2018, that has carried on through until July. August, as the hottest month of the year is always quiet. Exactly what was predicted, whilst the start of September is again proving that property sales targets are not only being met, but exceeding expectations.

Even with Brexit looming the general feeling is “que sera, sera,” what will be, will be, and that nothing is going to stop someone’s dream of either relocating with a family or retiring in the sun with a cheaper cost of living. The Torrevieja area continues to be extremely popular with all nationalities, however a whopping 80% of local property sales within the resale market are thanks to the Brits, followed by Scandinavians, Belgians and French. They can’t help falling for Torrevieja’s beautiful white sandy beaches, blue skies and traditional architecture lined with Spanish balustrades being draped with bougainvillea! The average sales price this year has been in the region of €150,000. As we are in the final quarter of 2018, the local property market is projected to end the year on a high. SELLING YOUR HOME? Government plans measures against owners of empty homes The Spanish government is planning “coercive measures” against the owners of empty homes, according to an internal report that has been leaked to Spanish national newspapers. In a bid to regulate housing “as a public service in the general interest,” the Socialist Party (PSOE) government has drafted a set of initiatives that would affect property owned by banks and developers, but also private citizens. The measures are part of a report by the Housing Secretary General’s Office, which says they must now be elevated to national law. There are an estimated 3.4 million homes lying empty in Spain, according to a 2011 census by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the latest available. “Mobilising” this pool of property has become one of the main goals of Spain’s Public Works Ministry.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who leads a minority government, wants to build enough consensus to start drafting a national housing law. But his weak position in Congress and the 2020 deadline for new national elections will complicate the initiative. And regional governments currently have the biggest say in housing policies, leading to diverging approaches to the problem of affordable housing. As an alternative, Sánchez has suggested forging a national agreement among parties to foment an adequate supply of housing in Spain. “I am calling on all political forces to reach a pact that will turn housing into a citizen right, far from speculation,” Sánchez wrote last week via Twitter. In a report dated 11th September and presented to the Cabinet, the ministry insisted on the need for a national law to

end the current discrepancies stemming from different criteria followed by the various regional governments of Spain. Only this, said the report, can end the situation of “inequality.” Some regions currently apply sanctions against the owners of empty homes. Forced renting and temporary expropriation are also options in some cases. The targets of these measures also vary: in some places only banks holding repossessed homes can be sanctioned, while in other regions, private individuals are also being targeted. And there are also instances where a regional government has sold off public housing to investment firms. At the height of the economic crisis, Madrid regional and local authorities sold 5,000 public housing units to Goldman Sachs and Blackstone, who raised the rent and evicted anyone who could not pay.

Meanwhile, the Spanish courts are beginning to recognise the social role of public housing. A Madrid court recently accepted an appeal filed by a group of citizens against the sale of 2,935 apartments owned by the former Madrid Housing Institute (Ivima) to the investment fund Encasa Cibeles. And in May, another Madrid court said that these projects “serve a social purpose.” Both rulings found that the sale of public housing violated “the principles of family protection, protection of minors, and the right to adequate housing.”

Planned changes The government’s strategy includes changes to the National Housing Plan, the tool that would allow the state to have an influence over powers that currently reside with regional

Prime minister Pedro Sanchez

administrations. The current plan treats private and public developers equally, and establishes a 25-year protection period for housing that’s been built with public funds. Under the planned new system, this period would be extended and subsidised housing would never lose the purpose for which it was built. The public works minister, José Luis Ábalos, listed some of these measures in July at a congressional appearance where he also said that rental leases would be extended from three to five years to give tenants greater stability. Abalos announced plans to build 20,000 homes in high-demand areas where rising rent is forcing out working and middle-class tenants.

Last compulsory clock change next March The European Commission says next March will be the last compulsory clock change – onto BST and CEST for the Canary Islands and Spain – and after that, each member state will decide for themselves what to do. They will be required to inform the Commission whether they want to stay on summer hours, or whether they will once again change the clocks in October and whether they intend to continue to do so twiceyearly thereafter, or remain on either winter or summer hours. Polls in the Spanish media show more than three-quarters of people in Spain want permanent summer hours, although Galicia wants year-round BST and Portugal, directly to the south, wants to carry on with the twice-yearly clock change. A committee set up by

Pedro Sánchez's government will discuss what to do. Meanwhile, the Canary Islands wants to remain on a different time zone to the mainland, largely because of its geographical location, but also because of its 24times-daily mention on the radio when the hour is announced. Its regional government has asked to be part of Sánchez's committee. A majority of European Commissioners are concerned about the health effects of compulsory clock changes, which is why these will no longer be obligatory – along with the fact that 93 percent of Spanish respondents to the Commission's survey want to stay on the same time year-round, as do 80 percent of the 4.6 million respondents overall.

Crescendo International Choir Preparing for Fall Concert Fundraisers Crescendo International Choir has started rehearsing again to get ready for several planned fall concerts. The first planned concert will take place Saturday October 20 after evening mass in Sagrado Corazon Church in the Plaza Oriente, Torrevieja. There will be a free-will donation after the concert and all monies raised will go to local charities. The choir, made up of Soprano, Mezzo, Alto, Tenor and Bass, sings a wide variety of songs ranging from musicals to spirituals, from pop to classical. For example, at the upcoming Torrevieja concert, the choir plans to sing several spiritual pieces such as Deep Peace, Gloria and Hallelujah as well as such popular tunes as Scarborough Fair, Let it Be and Thank You for the Music. Crescendo has singers of many nationalities in its membership, including English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Danish, and American, plusa very talented Spanish Musical Director and Spanish Pianist.

The choir rehearses once a week on Wednesdays from 4.15 pm to 7 pm at the Bar El Paraiso, Urb. Jardin del Mar (close to Carrefour), in Torrevieja. Newcomers are encouraged to come and join in the fun. Based in Torrevieja, Crescendo International Choiris registered as a charitable organization and has made many contributions to charities all over Spain and in particular in Alicante Province. Most recently, the choir raised 1,050 euros at a concert it gave June 3 in Hondon de los Frailes. Five hundred

euros was given to the Frailes village band to help them reach their goal of obtaining new instruments. Two hundred euros was given to both the Pensionistas Association of Frailes and the Amas de Casa of Frailes. The remainder, 150 euros, was donated to the Food Bank of Frailes. After the Hondon de los Frailes concert, choir members and their families went to the Tipsy Terrace restaurant nearby for a delicious end-of-choir-season buffet. For more information about Crescendo International Choir, see the web site www.crescendo-choir.com.

Pigs & dogs support Butterflies in charity race night A total of 1,032 euros was raised by The Mad Hatters Pig & Dog Race Night held at the Pint Depot, Blue Lagoon in aid of the Butterfly Children Charity, DEBRA. Their customers filled the bar and the races began with alternate Pigs and Dogs racing. The Butterfly Children Charity would like to thank the Mad Hatters for all their hard work in organising the evening, all

the local businesses that donated raffle prizes and the customers of the Pint Depot for their continued support and generosity to the charity. The Mad Hatters and the customers of the Pint Depot have been supporting The Butterfly Children Charity, DEBRA since last summer and have raised a total of €2,151.55 and continue to support the cause.

Serving and worshipping in the community The International Christian Assembly Church of Torrevieja is happy to be part of its community and a centre where people can worship God. Its building is newly refurbished and in fact caters for three churches: Dutch, Spanish and English. It’s very much an international congregation with members from all over the world. ‘We’ve stopped counting the number of visitors,’ explains Reverend Rafael Restrepo. ‘People from at least 30 different countries have visited us and we are made up of many nationalities.’ Sunday morning is central to the weekly schedule. The Worship Service in English takes place at 11am and you don’t have to be a member to come. ‘Even the AGM is open to non-members,’ says Rafael. The church isn’t just about delivering services. It prides itself as being at the heart of the community and offers a number of opportunities for members and non-members alike. ‘We are an open

community,’ explains Pastor Rafael. ‘Nothing is closed, we welcome everyone.’ There are computer clubs and sewing clubs and regular opportunities to take part in trips and visits. They also have more local meeting opportunities with groups organised across the town who come together in their homes to study the Bible and talk. The church is very closely involved in supporting many charitable organisations. But they are also keen to tackle the reasons why people need to ask for help. ‘We try to help people find work and support themselves,’ explains Rafael. ‘We do collect food for the homeless but it’s not just about that. We want to connect with the community and being without work is the reason that many people are in need.’ As part of the way they reach out, people from the church are happy to help others with the day to day problems they can

encounter living in another country. Many of their members do not speak Spanish fluently and can struggle with the bureaucracy and legalities of life here. ‘We have translators and interpreters and many people who can help you with the official documentation,’ says Rafael. ‘We are serving the community in as many ways as we can. Of course we are going to talk about God, but we also recognise the pressures people can come under and we want to help.’ If you would like to visit, you can find the church on Calle Urbano Arregui, 23 or you can call 966 799 273 or 660 127 276. If you would like more information you can take a look at their webpage which includes their weekly schedule and forth coming events: http://www.icatorrevieja.org/in dex.htm Suzanne O’Connell

Mubadala had chosen the timing of the listing “very well” since Spanish investor appetite is high, amid strong economic growth while oil prices have rebounded. Oil topped $80 a barrel in May for the first time since 2014, boosted by OPEC-led output cuts and falling Venezuelan and Libyan output, as well as by an imminent drop in Iranian exports as US sanctions return. While a barrel hovered around 478 dollars, he predicted it could once again top $80 dollars a barrel “in the coming months”. “We are proud of our partnership with Cepsa, which is a strategic energy investment for Mubadala and a national industrial champion for Spain,” said Musabbeh Al Kaabi, head of petroleum at Mubadala. The planned listing on the Madrid stock exchange is “a natural and strategic fit for Cepsa that will provide

wider access to capital markets to support financial flexibility,” he added in a statement. Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund IPIC in 2011 bought the remaining 48.8 percent of Cepsa shares which it did not already own from France’s Total for 3.7 billion euros. Last year IPIC merged with Mubadala. The vast majority of the United Arab Emirates’ crude oil reserves are located in Abu Dhabi — capital of the Gulf emirate. Cepsa posted a net profit in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) of 441 million euros during the first half of 2018, a 7.0 percent increase over the previous year. The company is mainly active in oil refining and distribution in Spain but it is also active in oil and gas exploration and production in Latin America and North America.

Abu Dhabi to sell over 25% of Spain’s Cepsa Abu Dhabi’s state investor plans to float at least 25 percent of Spain’s Cepsa by the end of 2018, the energy company as announced, in what would be the largest listing in a decade on the Madrid stock exchange. Cepsa, which operates across the entire oil and gas value chain, did not say how much the deal would be worth, but market sources said the listing could value the firm at around 10 billion euros. Spanish business daily Expansion said the listing, which is subject to market conditions, is set to be the biggest Spain has seen in a decade. Cepsa has since 2011 been wholly owned by Abu Dhabi’s state investor Mubadala, whose vast portfolio also includes stakes in private equity firm Carlyle, telecoms company Etisalat Nigeria and gas firm Emirates LNG. British Consul says 'balconing' is 'over' The British Consul in Barcelona, Lloyd Millen, has urged Spain not to jump to conclusions about balcony fall deaths and injuries in Mallorca this summer, saying all those reported this year have been accidents. Millen's patch covers Catalunya, Aragón, the Balearic Islands and the Pyrénéen country of Andorra, meaning his office deals with a high number of incidents involving young Brits on boozy holidays with groups of friends in party districts such as Magaluf and Palmanova – part of the town of Calvià, Mallorca – and in Ibiza. Whenever a British holidaymaker is killed or badly injured in a fall from an apartment or hotel terrace, the Spanish media immediately refers to 'balconing' – a foolhardy stunt usually involving alcohol and peer pressure where victims attempt to jump from their balconies into the swimming pool below or climb from balcony to balcony. “This trend is over now. There are no cases of 'balconing' among young Brits these days,” Millen insists. “The cases seen

this year have been accidental falls, which is different; although it's true there have been a lot of such cases this summer.” Falls reported in the press have all been onto pavements or internal courtyards with no pool, showing they cannot logically be the result of 'balconing'. “Brits do not tend to live in flats with balconies and perhaps they are not used to them,” the Consul explains, adding that this is why the UK foreign office recommends tourists take extreme care when they visit holiday hotspots in Spain. Cheap alcohol is also partly behind accidental falls: “If they go to the Punta Ballena, a 300-metre strip, there are 113 cashpoints. It's designed to get money out of people,” Millen says. “And we always send out the message that tourists should closely monitor their alcohol consumption, because measures here are very different to in Britain. A gin and tonic in the UK tastes of tonic; here, it tastes of gin.” Reactions in the Spanish media and public, however, have largely been of mirth or outrage. Tongue-in-cheek suggestions of signs

Channel 4

being attached to all terrace railings reading: “Warning – balcony ahead, please do not jump,” as well as complaints about alcohol measures being 'criticised' – missing the point that the comments were a statement of fact and a note of caution rather than a negative judgment – have been seen on social media and discussion threads. But parents of victims and of victims' friends in the UK have called for action in some cases: balcony railings below waist height can easily be toppled over if a person is unsteady on his or her feet after drinking, and families have criticised one hotel complex which saw two deaths this summer on an unlit walkway with just a foot-high (30 centimetres) wall either side that appeared to border a garden, but in fact was all that stood between the hotel guest and a seven-metre (23-foot) drop. This said, some deaths and injuries have been caused by young guests accidentally locking their room keys inside and attempting to climb through their own windows by edging along a neighbouring balcony.

Spain wants special Gibraltar Brexit deal Spain is working to include a specific chapter on Gibraltar in the Brexit agreement. Britain’s planned departure from the European Union in March 2019 is being viewed by Spanish authorities as a good moment to make progress on long-standing claims involving taxes, environmental issues and smuggling in the British overseas territory, which is located in southern Spain. The chief Brexit negotiator for the EU, Michel Barnier, arrived in Madrid yesterday to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to discuss these issues. For now, however, Spain will not bring up the matter of sovereignty over a territory that was ceded to Great Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. “This is about working toward mutual benefit. We need a more balanced relationship,” said a source familiar with the matter. “And in future, it is inevitable that Gibraltar will come closer to Spain because that means coming closer to the EU.” The Brexit negotiation guidelines drafted by Brussels in March 2017 awarded Spain power over whether Gibraltar may benefit from any

advantages of the future relationship between the UK and the EU. A clause in that document states that once the UK leaves the bloc, “no agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom.” In the meantime, Madrid has begun a bilateral process with London that has just produced some progress in its sixth round of talks, said half a dozen sources consulted on the matter. Three sources familiar with the situation said that these initiatives are aimed at producing an annex to the Brexit deal listing specific measures to address the problems that Spain faces due to Gibraltar’s special status within the EU (it is not part of the customs union, it is exempted from the Common Agricultural Policy, and it does not apply sales tax (VAT), among other things). The Spanish government, which is currently under a Socialist Party (PSOE) administration, is particularly interested in improving conditions for the area’s cross-border workers, reducing tobacco smuggling, and cracking down on tax

abuses. Madrid also wants to address environmental concerns that include the dumping of pollutants around a territory of under seven square kilometers that shares its northern border with the Andalusian province of Cádiz. But the most controversial issue of all may be the airport, built in 1938 in an area that Spain considers to be illegally occupied because it falls outside the territorial limits set by the 1713 Utrecht Treaty. Madrid wants joint use of the facility. No easy deal But securing this protocol will not be easy. The last thing the European Commission wants is to add more conflict to an already complex Brexit deal that is not yet completely agreed on. Foreign Minister Josep Borrell of Spain has been in touch with UK Minister for the Cabinet Office David Lidington, and he has also contacted Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to lay out a detailed explanation of Spain’s position on the matter. Borrell has said in public that he is not planning to demand Spanish sovereignty over Gibraltar at the moment. “The issue of sovereignty is not on the table,” he said

last week inside Spanish Congress. “I am a lot more worried about the situation in Campo de Gibraltar than about sovereignty.” EU sources said it is likely that the final Brexit agreement will contain three separate protocols for Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and the British bases in Cyprus, which was part of the British Empire until 1960. Tax Abuses Smuggling Gibraltar is the biggest entry point for illegal tobacco products into Spain. Last year authorities seized more than 600,000 packs of cigarettes, a 158 percent rise from 2016, according to official data. Madrid wants the price of tobacco, which is much lower in Gibraltar, to be raised in order to make illegal trafficking less attractive. Business registration

- There are 55,000 registered businesses in a territory of just over 30,000 residents. Madrid wants stricter tax residence criteria to prevent businesses that operate in Spain from registering in Gibraltar for tax-avoidance purposes. Workers - The Spanish executive wants more stable conditions for the 10,000 to 12,000 workers who cross from Campo de Gibraltar into the overseas territory each day.

One dead in Madrid Ritz hotel renovations One worker died and two others were badly hurt after scaffolding collapsed during renovation work at Madrid’s Ritz hotel, emergency services said. “Final toll from the collapse of scaffolding at the Ritz: 11 people treated and one deceased,” the city emergency services tweeted. Six people were taken to hospital and

two were reported to have suffered serious injury after the scaffolding came down during the late afternoon. The luxury five-star hotel in central Madrid, opened in 1910, has been closed for several months undergoing extensive work. An emergency services spokeswoman told AFP at least three workers had to be pulled from the rubble.

PM proposes end to politicians’ protection The Socialist Party (PSOE) government is planning to reform the Constitution in order to end aforamiento – the Spanish term for the legal protection offered to politicians, judges and others from prosecution in the country’s lower courts. Speaking at an event in Madrid, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced recently that the measure could come into force in just 60 days if there is consensus in parliament. “The challenge we have is for citizens to believe in politics once more,” he said to an audience of politicians and leading business figures. The reform, he continued, would send a “relevant, unequivocal sign of setting a good example of solidarity and empathy” to Spaniards. Sánchez came to power in June after winning a noconfidence vote against former Popular Party (PP) Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The move came in the wake of a damning court ruling for the PP in a longrunning corruption case known as Gürtel. This recent announcement comes as Sánchez is trying to shake off the effects of a scandal last week that affected both him and his party, after his health minister, Carmen Montón, was forced to quit over irregularities and plagiarism related to a master’s degree at Madrid’s King

Juan Carlos University (URJC). Sánchez’s own academic record also came under fire, with claims

he had plagiarised his doctoral thesis. Under pressure from the media and opposition parties alike, he was eventually forced to make the text public. However, according to reports in Spanish national newspapers it was found that it did not contain plagiarised text. Doing away with aforamiento would have a direct effect on Pablo Casado, the current leader of the PP who is being investigated by the Supreme Court over alleged irregularities

regarding his own master’s degree from the URJC. Were he not a deputy in Congress, the case would have been handled by a lower court. What is ‘Aforamiento’? Aforamiento is a legal situation whereby certain people, due to the office they hold or their personal situation, cannot be tried in an ordinary court. The concept is different to parliamentary immunity, which means that no deputy can be prosecuted for an action carried out as part of their role in government without the prior agreement of the corresponding chamber of parliament. As such, being an aforado simply means guaranteed a trial in a higher court. In the case of deputies and ministers in Congress, it’s the Supreme Court. Of the 250,000 aforados in Spain, more than 232,000 are members of the state or autonomous security forces, according to data supplied by the president of the Supreme Court and the CGPJ legal watchdog, Carlos Lesmes. Another five are members of the Spanish royal family, while the rest, 17,603, are members of state or regional institutions. However, the reform proposed by Prime Minister Sánchez would, for now, only affect deputies in Congress, senators and government ministers.

I don't want the responsibility

Messy neighbours

My younger brother was born with mental difficulties. He has been cared for by my parents, who refused any social services help, not even day centres or respite for them. I am now in my 40s and married with children. My parents seem to have assumed that I will take my brother in, when they are no longer around. I feel very resentful about this. I love my brother - all their money and energy went on him understandably, but I felt sidelined and as though my needs did not count. I had to shelve my dreams of going to University.

Our new neighbours are treating the front garden as a junk yard. It’s now so bad, that we have seen rats wondering about. Our children can’t play out, and are scared to walk passed their property. We have said something to them, but have been told that the husband has to keep these items for his building business. When we said we had seen rats, they became angry and said we were lying, and to mind our own business. Then we asked them if we could re-build the party wall, which we think is our responsibility, and they became quite hostile. We can’t even consider moving, because no one will want to buy our place.

I understand how you feel, you want to be his brother, not his carer. And you have your own family to consider. He of course would have benefited greatly from professional services all these years. Please talk to your parents about getting him some social help now, and let them know that you cannot provide him with a home. Don’t feel guilty about providing social care for your brother when the time comes. In the right environment he could flourish, and you can visit regularly.

Health & beauty

47

The fact that you have seen rats, suggests a health hazard, and it sounds like there is anti-social behaviour too. I would go along to your local Town Hall to firstly confirm who is responsible for the party wall, and to see if there is anything that they can do to help with the problem of the junk.

HEALTH FACTS If you’re tired… exercise After a long day at work, going to the gym is probably the last thing on your list of priorities but research has found that exercising actually gives you more energy. A study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found that levels of fatigue and depression improved after a 30-minute session of moderate intensity exercise. This is

because exercise improves your cardiovascular health which means that more blood and oxygen flow around the body, therefore giving you more energy.

Sit-ups won’t give you a flat stomach Many people fall into the trap of thinking that they can achieve a flat stomach by doing crunches. But the truth

is, endless amounts of crunches won’t give you the stomach of your dreams - as the exercise only works your abs, not your core muscles. One study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found carrying out six weeks of abdominal exercises alone was not enough to reduce abdominal fat.

Handwriting things can help your memory Research from Indiana University found that in order to remember something, you should handwrite notes, rather than type them. Writing is thought to boost your memory as note taking by hand requires different cognitive processes than typing. For example, if in a lecture you are writing notes, you have to listen carefully to what the speaker has said as it is impossible to write down every word. Therefore through this process, you are listening, digesting and summarising the information more effectively than someone who is just typing words into a laptop.

To cool down, drink something hot It might sound counterproductive, but if you want to cool down, then drink something hot. According to a study from the University of Ottawa’s school of Human Kinetics, as the drink is hotter than your body temperature, it triggers a sweat response in the body that more than compensates for the increase. So although it might initially make you feel hotter, a hot drink will cause you to sweat more and therefore the body effectively cools itself quicker.

Healthy alternatives to hitting the gym Big workouts aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. For some people spending hours in the gym, pounding the treadmill or shifting weights is hell on earth. However, there are always alternative ways to keep yourself fit, especially here in Spain with gorgeous beaches, cliff tops and promenades to make the most of. The main thing to remember is that exercise is really anything that gets your body moving outside of the stuff you normally do. You can’t really count sweeping or vacuuming your house if you do it every day anyway; you’ll need to bump it up a bit to see the benefits. Of course, no amount of exercise will undo bad eating habits, so if your goal is fat loss, the first thing you need to address is what you put in your mouth. But that topic is for another article. Exercise is really just a bonus gift you’re giving yourself. You’ll feel better, your heart will become stronger, you can build some muscle, you can do something you enjoy, and you can even maybe get some extra Vitamin D if you choose activities that get you outside. Luckily, going to the gym to do a routine workout is not the only way to stay in shape. From dancing to taking the stairs, try these useful and healthy alternatives to keep fit. Take up gardening If you like being close to nature, choose gardening. You will not only burn calories but also get the joy of

tending nature. It is a great way to work out your abs, back and gluteal muscle. If you haven’t got land then use pots and planters of terraces and patios. Many herbs and vegetables can be grown in pots encouraging healthy eating too. There are also lots of communal gardens here in Spain, s why not rally your neighbours and spruce up the pieces of land on your urbanisation or near to your home. Cycle more Ditch the vehicle and cycle your way to the workplace, shops or friends house. You’ll discover a toned and fitter self as cycling is a great exercise for your core muscles, particularly abs and legs. Opt for routes that have less traffic and stoppages for a safer ride. The canal paths are a popular alternative with walkers, joggers and cyclists here in Spain rather using the road network. Walk the talk Whenever you are on phone, walk around. You will lose calories without even realising it. Simply swap your usual landline for a cordless phone and you can pace the house and garden whilst chatting until your heart is content. Sounds simple and it is, but its also effective...especially if you like a good natter. Go motion gaming If you are a gaming enthusiast, use consoles such as Kinect or PlayStation

Move to shed some pounds. Try balancing a boat, shake a leg on Dance Central or play tennis all in the convenience of your living room, where you’ll move around and burn calories. For added fun, get a friend to be a coplayer and get some healthy competition going. Play with your kids Playing with kids will not only create a better bonding but also work out your arms, back and legs when you are running after them, picking them up or squatting. Besides re-discovering your yough and having fun is never a bad thing. Dance it out If you love moving to a beat, dance those calories out at parties, clubs or even in your living room. If done diligently, where you move all the parts of your body consciously, dancing can be a better workout than running. You could always buy a dance workout video like Zumba if you wanted to take it to the next level. Take the stairs Choose stairs over an escalator or ramp. The simple switch creates a big impact on your stamina and health by toning your thighs, glutes, hamstrings, calves, hip and core.

continued from page 49 Wash your car Take the love for your vehicle a level up and wash it yourself. Mix this with some sets of calf raises or squats while you are washing the roof or tires. Result? Fit legs and abs! Walk your dog Dog is a man's best friend for reasons more than one. Think about all the calories you burn while taking it for a walk or playing with it. A good tip is letting your dog control the speed so that you are working out your arms while pulling him and legs while keeping up with its speed. It is a winwin! Clean your house Clean your home yourself. Not only will you save a lot of money but when combined with intentional bend downs for wiping and mopping, stretches to clean spider webs, or twists to put things in place, you will also burn a good number of calories. Use public transport If possible, use public transport instead of your personal vehicle. Hopping on and off buses or is a great alternative to your gym. This will also encourage you to visit new places in your locality and explore the area on foot. Go Outdoors Plan treks or adventure outings with your friends and family or just go out to play. You will make fond memories together and stay fit. There are several local national parks that you can walk or cycle around. Many of the paths are

coded to signify if the ere are short or long, easy or difficult to tackle. There are picnic areas and wildlife spotting opportunities. Join a team Is going to the gym hard for you because you dislike working out alone? You might be a more social person, so try joining a neighborhood sports team. It could be ultimate Frisbee one night a week or a soccer league that participates in regional tournaments. If you need people to give you motivation, a sports team might be an excellent opportunity. Get some community spirit Your local community might have opportunities for you to get your heart rate up in order to stay fit. Help out in a local community garden, volunteer to help build a home for Habitat for Humanity, talk to the Parks and Recreation department and offer your service to clean up a local park. All of these activities will get your heart rate up and get you out of the house. . Join a martial arts class. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what a gi is, or that you’ve never done a class in your life. There’s sure to be other

newbies in pretty much any class you choose. Look at all the different types in your area. Look at it this way: you’ll be active, you’ll learn some self-defence moves, and you’ll feel like Neo in The Matrix. Okay, maybe not, but you’ll definitely be a cooler version of your current self. Play a musical instrument You can burn the same number of calories in an hour playing the cello or violin as you do walking a track. On top of it, you’ll make music and forge new pathways in your brain. Do some home renovations Do you feel like your home needs some freshening up? Now’s a great time to do it. Pick out some new paint colors, put up some new wallpaper, hang some new photos, or go whole-hog and renovate your bathroom or kitchen. Once you start being more active, you’ll realise what you were missing and you’ll be more likely to keep it up. If you need more motivation, pick one or more of these activities listed and get a buddy. Sign up for classes that you have to pay for; if you don’t like to waste money that will offer some motivation to continue. Finally, have fun!

Michael via email asks: Dear Aunty, I have an ACER laptop with Window XP and a message “Low Disc Space” continually appears on power up. I follow the disc cleanup procedure but without success, and when I attempt to defrag, another message appears informing me that “there is insufficient disc space to allow defrag”. When I check available disc space there is very little available despite only 6 programs being installed as I have uninstalled and deleted all unnecessary programs and files. Also I cannot uninstall the yahoo browser and replace with Google Chrome. Your advice would be appreciated. Aunty Says: It’s time for a new computer Michael. Windows XP must be getting near 15 years old now and all the big players (including Microsoft and Google) stopped supporting both XP and Vista years ago. These particular errors messages suggest you need to fit a bigger hard disk drive which will then involve a fresh install of XP and this is probably half way to the cost of a decent Win7, Win8.1 or Win10 laptop. Lidia via email asks: Hey Aunty. I have a newish laptop with Windows 10 and following

your help in an earlier article I managed to download and install Google Chrome and set my internet start page to the English www.google.co.uk search page. This has worked fantastic for a few months but all of a sudden my home page as changed and everything keeps appearing in Spanish and I’m now getting loads of adverts popping up. Every time I change the settings back to Google it somehow reverts back to this annoying shopping page. Help!!! Aunty says: Hi Lidia. This has all the hallmarks of some spyware/malware so do a full scan with Malwarebytes and your favourite antivirus program and see if that clears the problem. There is some spyware doing the rounds that makes changes to your computer that none of the security apps seem

to fix so let me know how it goes and I can send you more detailed instructions. Nathan via email asks: Hi Aunty. I upgraded to new laptop which has Windows 10. On my old one had Vista and when I printed, a page came up telling me how much ink I had left which was really handy. Since connecting and installing my Epson printer on my new laptop this does not seem to happen. Aunty Says: Hi Nathan. When you first plug a printer into a Windows 10 computer it will look through its own list of printers and install what it thinks is the best software, and although these kind on work, they are often only the very basics to get you going & don’t include the additional functions such as ink level alerts. You need to go to the Epson website and navigate to the support or download section. And type your printer model into the search box and look for the full software package for your printer. Once downloaded and installed you should then see all of the features you had with your Vista laptop. If you don’t see Win10 drivers listed then try the Win8 or Win7 versions. Any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

Tyre Safety Checks We Can All Do

Tyres are arguably one of the most important elements of a vehicle; however they are often so easily neglected, despite the abuse they can face on a regular basis. On a daily basis they are worn down through normal use, have to withstand heat and cold and are often bashed by potholes and kerbs, it is no real surprise that they can become easily damaged. It is for that reason that we must educate ourselves to pay more attention to our tyres, so that we can get the best out of them, and the safest driving experience possible. It is important that our tyres have sufficient tread to enable them to maintain contact with the road surface in any weather conditions. The grooves in the tyres are used to displace surface content to ensure the tyres grip the road, and so it is only if there is enough of a gap for that surface material, water for

example, to go into that the tyres remain efficient. The minimum tread depth of a tyre is 1.6 millimetres across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres. Over or under inflated tyres will cause uneven wear and so the tread might also be uneven, possibly deeper on one side than the other. We can and should check the tyres on a regular basis to ensure that they are at their optimum inflation and with consistent tread. We need to get close to the tyre and look at each one of them separately. Firstly, we can feel around each tyre with our hands, including the sides, feeling for anything that doesn´t seem correct, such as bubbling or even items protruding from the tyre. It is possible for example for a tyre to contain a nail but the nail is plugging the hole it has made and so deflation can be very slow, despite this potentially dangerous situation. As we look around each tyre we

should also check the tread. If the tyre is under inflated then there may be more wear towards he edges of the tyres. If a tyre is over inflated there could be more wear in the centre. As we work our way around the tyre we should also look within the tread pattern for ridges between the tread. These are called the Principle Grooves and are indicators of tyre wear. We should check each tyre individually, including the spare, to make sure that the tread wear is consistent and sufficient. We should also check the tyre pressure, although we may have to go to a local service station to do this. Most modern vehicles have a plate stuck to them, often on or near the door, which indicated the optimum pressure under normal driving conditions. If not, you might have to check your manual. You should always check tyre pressure when they are cold. The tyres themselves also contain a series of numbers and letters which reveals a wealth of technical information. The tyres your vehicle is fitted with are registered on your ITV card, although you can change them for another size with a tolerance up to 3% from the size you have on your ITV card. If you look at the side of the tyre you will see a sequence which looks something like this sample, “195 / 55 R 16 87V”. Here, “195” refers to 195 millimetres, the nominal section width of the tyre. “55” is 55%, the aspect ratio, representing the height of the tyre

sidewall as a percentage of the nominal section width, i.e., in our case, 55% of 195mm. “R” stands for radial construction. “16” is the diameter of the tyre´s inner rim, this time in inches. “87” is the load capacity of the tyre. “V” indicates the maximum permitted speed. Another code stamped onto the tyre reveals the month and year of manufacture. For example, a code “4108” indicates that the tyre was manufactured in week 41 of the year 2008. There are many cheap tyres on offer for sale which, when you look closely, might well be very old tyres. This is something to be very conscious of, especially as the recommendations are that tyres should be replaced at least every 5 years, so you might not be aware that you are replacing your tyres with those already older than the recommendation. Because of the importance of tyres and the functions they perform, it is always worthwhile spending that little extra effort, time and even money to ensure they are correct. Garages like Autos Direct in San Miguel will be able to check your tyres for you, if you have any doubt, and can recommend any remedial action you might need to take. However, it is also crucial that we each perform the basic checks mentioned here on a regular basis, at least monthly and every time before a long journey to ensure our vehicles are safe and at optimum performance for fuel efficiency. There is a video on the website, n332.es, which shows how to check your tyres and the different elements explained above.

Do you know the latest changes to Traffic Law? In a world in which we have to adapt to technological advances which are developing at an alarming rate, traffic laws also have to change constantly to keep up with many of these advances. Not only that, roads appear to be becoming more deadly, with a once declining trend in deaths and serious injuries, these now seem to be on the increase again, and so governments must act, as if education hasn´t worked, enforcement is the only option. What changes have been implemented this year so far? What can

we expect soon? These questions, and others are answered in the latest presentation by the N332 team, who are starting touring the local area with the Road Safety Roadshow. Between now and the spring, we are planning our visits to various social and community groups to give a talk on road safety. If you represent a group, and can get at least 50 people together (more is better) at your local venue, then get in touch if you would like us to add you to our schedule.

If you are interested, send us an email to news@n332.es and we can start the process and add you to our schedule. By the way, this is a new presentation again for 2018/2019, and so if we have visited you in the past, we are happy to return, just get in touch with us again. This season we are also pleased to be supported by Spain´s leading property sales and rental company, Casas Espania, who are providing the vehicles that enable our volunteers to visit the locations. CD Torrevieja vs Benidorm CD – WIN TICKETS This coming Sunday 30 September at 17:30h, the fifth game of the season will be disputed between CD Torrevieja and Benidorm CD at the Nelson Mandela grounds in Torrevieja. After the setback that took place at the José Díez Iborra stadium for the final match of the season, which prevented our team from gaining the leading position, this Sunday’s match in our home ground is all about getting even! At least in sport, each weekend gives you a new opportunity to turn things around. The Club would also like to remind everyone that the period in which you can acquire your 2018/19 season ticket is still open, and all you have to do is come to the head office located at Calle Caballero de Rodas, nº56. Season tickets cannot be acquired

from the stadium ticket office. We hope to see you at the Nelson Mandela on Sunday, Let’s go Torrevieja! The Costa Blanca People is lucky enough to have two tickets to this Sunday’s match to give away. If you would like to win, all you need to do is tell us is: “What is the name of CD Torrevieja’s current home ground?” To enter, email office@costablancapeople.com or send a private message to our facebook page. The winner will be drawn at random from a list of correct entries on Thursday 27th September and the tickets will be available for collection from the CBP office in Torrevieja on Friday 28th September between 10am and 4pm. T&Cs apply.

ABBEY ANGLING We fished the 3rd round of the Winter Series at the El Bosquet Complex on the 18th September; the match had to be changed from the Embalsa de la Pedrera due to the heavy rains over the weekend. The levels are now back to normal after the storms, there are two ducks on 1 to 10 pegs ,which are a pain in the butt, although they also hassled Neil McBirnie it did not affect his fishing skills enabling him to win the match with a brilliant weight of 62.540kgs, just short of the venue record, well done. With quite a drop to second place for Lennie Bolton with 21.020kgs and coming in third was Bill Reade with 16.080kgs, well done to Jackie Breslin who took the 4th place with 15.420kgs. 1st Neil McBirnie with 62.540kgs fishing the pole using pellet 2nd Lennie Bolton with 21.020kgs fishing the pole using maggot 3rd Bill Reade with 16.080kgs fishing the pole using maggot There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club

All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

RODS & REELS Our 3rd round of the Summer Championship was due to be fished at Murcia, but again due to the recent storms the match was changed to the El Bosquet Complex on the 19th September. SACKED IN THE MORNING ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com I know, I know. You want me to talk about all the Premier League action. Yet, I cannot even go there until we talk about the botoxed, manicured elephant in the room; Jeff Stelling. What on Earth has happened to his eyebrows? OK, we all know the answer is botox, but still. Maybe it was the surprise of his beloved Hartlepool winning away from home? Who knows, but I am sure it put Phil Thomson’s nose out of joint.

Anyway, we are actually here for the football so let’s reflect on another weekend of Premier League hilarity. Wasn’t it nice to see someone from Portugal have a nice day out at Old Trafford for once? Nuno Santo, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho – the list could go on was Benfica Wolves left the home of Manchester United with a point tucked under their arm. Wolves have played both City and United now and not been beaten. That’s quite impressive when you think about it. Especially the first bit. Sir Alex was back at his second home for the first time since his illness and he must have watched aghast as it was the Portugal themed side that played the more open attacking football. Of course, social media got a little too excited by one touch by Paul Pogba that set up Fred’s first ever goal for United, but that is the world

we live in. Jose had plenty to say, as you would expect, commenting on how Wolves played as if was a ‘World Cup Final’ (like Portugal would ever make a World Cup Final) and lamenting the lack of desire apparent in his team, once again. Here’s a hot take for you, Jose. Maybe, just maybe, they don’t like playing for you? Jurgey lad finally shuffled his pack at Anfield which he was perfectly entitled to do considering Liverpool were only playing Southampton. Mark Hughes had promised to play a game that ’caused Liverpool problems’ but he must have forgotten about that, right? The only problem Liverpool were caused was counting how many goals they could have scored in the first-half. It was great to see one of those training ground free-kick routines right off the training ground come off as Shaqiri rebounded the ball off the bar for Mo Salah to tap in. I guess that goalscoring crisis is over now? That crisis, by the way, is just one goal difference between now and this time last season. That’s not a goalscoring crisis. It’s the first time in their 126 year history that Liverpool have won their opening seven games, just in case a Liverpool fan hasn’t walked past you in the street and told you. Someone was always going to stop Sarriball in its tracks but did anyone actually think it would be West Ham? I’ll be honest, I didn’t watch this one but when I saw the score was 0-0 I assumed the game hadn’t actually kicked off yet. Maurizio Sarri has already started managing expectations over the back-to-back matches with Liverpool, suggesting that they might need a year to be at the level of Klopp’s champions-in-waiting. If they can’t beat West Ham at the Athletics Stadium then I’d suggest they might need two. They could have even left with nothing had Yarmalenko not looked at Sakho’s miss on Saturday (more on that later) and thought, ‘oh I can do much worse than that’. Arsenal are starting to look like they are making progress under Unai Emery since he realised that it is possible to pick Alex and Pierre-Emerick and get positive results. Everton are slumping towards another crisis as they left the Emirates on the wrong end of a two-goal-hiding. Petr Cech may not be the best with his feet but once in a while he does still show he has a bit left in the gloves. Cardiff City were always likely to try and rough up Manchester City in Wales but doing it when they are 3-0 down and the game is already gone is just a little bit pathetic. I don’t even know the name of the player who tried to break the leg of Ilkay Gundogan

because he is that insignificant, but the tackle was an absolute shocker and you know full well at least ten red cards were given across England on Saturday afternoon for far, far less. Pep was back in the dugout and almost seemed satisfied at the final whistle, as he should be considering City strolled to a 5-0 win whilst minding their ankles. Sergio Aguero, having signed a new deal that will keep him at the club until he has broken every goalscoring record going, found the back of the net in his 300th City game. There’s a reason Eddie Howe isn’t the manager of Burnley anymore. He doesn’t win very often at Turf Moor, something I completely overlooked in my Friday predictions. Sean Dyche wasn’t panicked despite Burnley’s start to the season and in that form he has every reason to believe they’ll be fine. But that sound you can hear is the sound of Cherries crashing to the ground as Autumn draws in. Follow his late equaliser for Fulham and Newcastle’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored more goals than Newcastle United this season. It’s for reasons like this that the travelling Geordies spent 90 minutes booing Mike Ashley (or, when bored of that Wilf Zaha). Watford will have hoped to have left Craven Cottage with all three points having led since the first minute and a win would have got their title bid right back on track. Palace, however, suffered the worst miss of the season from Big Mama. Big Mama equals Big Miss. Hey, Huddersfield. Here’s an idea. When facing Jamie Vardy, it might not be a bad idea to keep at least one man back when you have a corner. He’s rather quick, you know? Vardy set up Iheanacho and Leicester went on to beat Wagner’s men 3-1. Glenn Murray is only lethal in the opposition area, it would appear. The only time he has thought less about what he was doing recently was when he appointed that accountant and it was his handball that led to Tottenham’s opening goal from the spot, scored by Harry Kane. Of course, it was Harry Kane, because I removed him from my Fantasy team this weekend. Amazingly, in a world where you now get black armbands and a minute’s silence when the tea lady’s cat dies, there was nothing to mark the passing away of the legendary Chas from Chas and Dave. But, in a fitting tribute, Spurs’ performance was as bad as 90% of their back catalogue. But, bad was actually enough to see a Brighton side who didn’t seem that up for taking advantage of Spurs recent plight.
