Spanish government to extend lockdown The Spanish government is set to extend the state of alarm, declared on 14th March in a bid to slow the coronavirus outbreak, for a further 15 days. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had originally set the lockdown for one 15 day period which was due to last until 29th March. Sánchez needs the approval of Spain’s lower house, the Congress of Deputies, to extend the state of alarm, which is certain to be approved. Therefore, the lockdown will continue until 12th April, meaning that people in Spain will be confined to their homes during the popular Easter holiday break. Congress will vote on the decision on 25th March. Pablo Casado, the leader of the conservative Popular Party (PP), declared last week that his party would be willing to support an extension of the emergency measure. Other parties also indicated that they would support the government’s efforts to contain the spread of the outbreak. The move comes after Sánchez warned the Spanish population on Saturday that the coronavirus crisis was set to worsen in the coming days. “Unfortunately the number of diagnosed cases is going to rise in the coming days. The worst is yet to come, and it is pushing our capacities to the limit,” said the Prime Minister in a national televised address. Latest figures Official figures change within minutes and so will be out of date at the time of going to print. However, looking at the latest available figures is useful to help put the statistics into perspective. The weekend before lockdown Spain had around 2,000 cases. The weekend of the lockdown there were around 8,000

and this past weekend there were 28,600 – a difference of 26,000 case in a just two weeks. On Sunday (22nd March) the total number of deaths in Spain from the coronavirus pandemic was at 1,753. Of the overall infected patients, 1,785 were in intensive care, while 2,575 had recovered and had been discharged

from hospital. Speaking to the press, Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts, said that “12 percent of all those affected are health workers” – a total of 3,475 people. The health expert warned that Intensive Care Units (ICU) could face

even greater strain due to a rise in infections. “The critical point for the ICUs will happen two weeks after contagions peak,” said Simón. “There is going to be great pressure in some places but this collapse will not be generalised.” Simón said that the fatality rate in Spain was “around 6 percent, and 10 percent in some areas,” but indicated

that this figure would drop once more testing gets underway. The Committee for the Technical Management of Covid19 has announced that Spain has purchased 640,000 fast-result test kits that would arrive “in the coming days.” Experts believe that cases will peak in Spain over the coming weekend or early into the following week. It’s unlikely that the lockdown will be eased until the number of new cases drops considerably. Local situation The province of Alicante registered 58 new cases of coronavirus in the 24 hours

between Saturday and Sunday, during which 10 more people died from this disease, as explained by the Regional Minister of Public Health, Ana Barceló. The virus is affecting 579 people in the Alicante region, and 1,604 in the entire Valencian Community. The number of fatalities since the pandemic began in the Alicante province amounts to 40, and 69 in the whole of the Valencian community. Alicante suffered more than half of the deaths over the weekend, 10 out of 19, which the Health Minister explained was due to an outbreak at an elderly care home in Alcoy. Care homes for the elderly are a high risk both for the residents and the care-workers. The virus also continues to spread among general health professionals. There are already 335 health workers who have tested positive in the Community - almost 21 percent of infected people. By Sunday the total number of people hospitalised with the virus was 590, of which 209 are in the province of Alicante, and of these 33 in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Coronavirus tests with negative results carried out so far total 6,633. The Conselleria website to carry out selftesting has already registered 1,900,000 enquiries, and the specific telephone number enabled by the Generalitat has answered 34,355 calls. Cases in Madrid The Madrid region, which has been hardest hit by the outbreak, registered 1,021 deaths and 9,702 infections as of Sunday. Many of the victims were elderly residents in care homes, which saw a dramatic spike in infections last week. The Ifema Convention Centre, which has been converted into a temporary field hospital, began receiving its first patients and Madrid authorities also indicated that nine hotels are set to be converted into hospitals for patients with less-serious symptoms. Stay at home All residents are being reminded to stay at home and are being warned that after a week of adjustment the authorities are now clamping down on those found driving around and wandering the streets. Feeble excuses will no longer be tolerated and fines of between €100 and €600 will be issued on the spot.

More measures at Mercadona

What to do if you think you are sick

Mercadona has brought in further safety measures to its supermarkets from yesterday (Monday 23rd March). This comes as the coronavirus pandemic progresses and the number of those infected continues to rise at a considerable rate. The store will now install protective, separation screens at the tills, as well as implementing the mandatory use of gloves by each customer, which will be dispensed at the entrances. These measures were announced by the supermarket chain in a recent statement, in which it stressed that these precautions are taken with the aim of ‘strengthening health and safety measures’ both for customers and workers alike. Mercadona had already increased its security protocols due to panic buying and the implementation of the state of alarm, these measures included; customers entering the store alone (as single buyers rather than coupes or groups), reducing its opening hours and asking that customers keep at least a metre distance from other shoppers both in the aisles and at the tills. Hand sanitiser and paper towels are also widely available to disinfect trolley handles and the supermarket assures that its stores are cleaned and disinfected daily. The installation of the screens will be carried out progressively during this week.

If you know you have been in contact with someone confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19, or if you are worried you might have picked up the virus while going about your business over the last few days, there are steps you can take to self check. First, there is a ‘self test’ available online from the Generalitat Valenciana. It is recommended that anyone with concerns answer the questions online before taking further action. The questions are in Spanish, but are quite simple to decipher with the help of Google Translate. If you have the Google Translate app on your phone or tablet, you can use the in built camera feature which recognises and translates any text it is pointed at. The online self test will provide you with information on next steps if you are likely to have been infected. Practical tips to stay safe out of the house As authorities are tightening the lockdown restrictions as the local community goes into its second week of lockdown amid rapidly increasing case numbers, your own home is by far the safest place to be. However, if you absolutely have to go out to buy food, visit the chemist or keep a medical appointment it’s vital to minimise your risk of exposure both for yourself and others. Social distancing and thoroughly washing your hands are essential policies to follow as is sanitising you and your car when you get back. While the coronavirus known officially as SARS-CoV-2 is easily spread, there are commonsense techniques you can adopt when you do need to stock-up during lockdown... Stop touching If you're still pressing lift buttons with your fingertips, stop. Any time you have to open a door, push a button, pull a lever or digitally sign for something, use a different body part instead. You have plenty. For example, tap out a PIN code with your knuckle instead of the pad of your finger, or push open a door with your shoulder, hip or foot instead of your hands.

You can usually flip on a light switch or sink tap with your elbow or wrist, and you can wrap the sleeve of your sweater or jacket around the handle of doors you have to physically pull open. It's easy enough to toss your clothing into the wash later rather than expose your skin now, especially if the chances you'll use your hands to touch your face or food items is high. Don't sort through produce with your bare hands When sorting through food, put your hand inside a fresh bag and use the outside like a glove to pick up and inspect the fresh produce, so as not to touch every item with your bare hands. You can toss larger cloth bags into the wash to sanitize them after a shop, and keep smaller plastic or biodegradable bags for future trips, even rinsing them under hot water for good measure. Just completely dry them first. As always, thoroughly wash your hands when you get home, as well as any produce you use. Do the metre greeter If you are lucky enough to see a friend when out, don’t get closer than at least one metre, don’t hug, kiss or even shake

hands! Say hello quickly, but avoid standing and talking as you could be putting each other at risk. Carry extra napkins, disinfecting wipes and facial tissue Pack extra tissues, disinfecting wipes and sanitiser every time you go out. These products could come in handy to clear away germs, or act as a barrier between you (or your phone) and a surface. For example, opening a door handle or if you absentmindedly put your phone down at the cash till. Do a 9-day time out The novel coronavirus can cling to surfaces, such as your jacket or a tabletop, for up to nine days at room temperature, studies have found. After that, it's thought to die and no longer be able to infect you. We know that a thorough cleaning with good ole soap and water will kill the virus' structure, but if you're not sure how to disinfect an item, like a dryclean-only jacket or pair of boots, setting it aside for 9 days is another option. Since COVID19 incubates in the body from one to 14 days, you can extend the time out to two weeks if you're extra concerned.

Flattening the curve As people around the world try to understand and protect themselves from the coronavirus COVID-19, a simple chart graph has gone viral—and it’s been praised for shedding some light on the scale and speed of the outbreak. The "flattening the curve" chart illustrates the wave of new coronavirus cases expected to hit. A high curve means the virus is spreading quickly; some people won’t get the medical care they need, and the number of deaths is likely to increase. A low curve means coronavirus is spreading slowly, which gives doctors the time and resources to treat more people (and hopefully save more lives). Medical professionals and public health experts are being called on to help ‘flatten the curve’ in the chart graph to stagger the rate of coronavirus cases, so hospitals will be able to treat everyone who gets it or needs to be tested. The smoothness of the curve could be the difference between treating the disease and health care providers struggling to cope with the demand for help. It summarises the importance of taking measures to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Ultimately, what flattening the curve does is remind us what the World Health Organization has been saying for months: wash your hands (frequently and properly), catch coughs and sneezes in tissues, and stay home. You might think these measures are simply putting off the inevitable, but they’ll make the world of difference to the bigger picture.

Delay on mortgages and contributions Traders, the self-employed and small businesses forced to shut down due to Spain's being in a State of Alarm over the Covid-19 transmission risk will not have to pay their monthly Social Security, or National Insurance quota, the national government has announced. With around 75 percent of Spain's companies being small or medium-sized businesses, many family-run, and over three million of its workforce being selfemployed, the lockdown means no income whatsoever – so a petition on Change.org calling for their monthly Social Security standing order to be waived until normality returns very swiftly attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures. President Pedro Sánchez, during the firstever Parliamentary meeting via video-conference in Spain's history, has announced measures to help soften the effects including an immediate waiver of Social Security payments for traders who have to shut up shop or whose income is dramatically reduced due to their business being affected, as well as allowing firms to lay staff off straight away and without the usual paperwork and procedures. These lay-offs are being permitted so firms do not have to make staff redundant as a result of diminishing income. Some have opted to give their employees annual leave during the crisis, although not all of them can afford for this to be in addition to their usual four weeks a year. Anyone who is laid off can sign on the

dole straight away and continue to claim until their firm reopens and they can go back to work. Normally, job loss – permanent or temporary – means the employee is able to claim a month's dole money for every four months worked, up to a maximum of two years, after which they need to start 'building it up' again. As dole money is finite and contributionbased, and as it comes in at 80 percent of gross salary for the first six months and 60 percent thereafter, the system has worked well – except during the financial crisis – since it meant not having to rush to take on the first job available, however unsuitable, simply in order to survive, and nobody would be tempted to 'avoid' getting a job and 'living off the State', although in practice, as Spain is a collectivist rather than an individualist culture – shown in scientific cross-cultural experiments on conformity over the years – this would be unlikely to be widespread in any case. The problem comes for those who have not worked long enough to 'save up' enough dole money, perhaps if they have been out of a job in the recent past and have used up all or most of their allowance. Additionally, dole money takes up to a month to be paid out. But with the State of Alarm, anyone laid off temporarily can sign on straight away, whether or not they have paid enough 'into the system' to qualify, and will continue to receive their dole money until their firms restart. And their dole payments received will not be counted

against their existing allowance, so will not deplete it. Self-employed persons, including business-owners themselves, are also allowed to claim in the same way. Workers, self-employed or employed, who are forced to stay at home to care for their children now schools are shut nationwide, preventing them from going to work, can claim funds from the State to compensate. This will come out of the Social Security pot which pays for dole money, maternity and paternity leave, retirement pensions, mostly healthcare – although income tax also does, in this case – widows', widowers', orphans' and sick pensions. In total, the government plans to put aside a record €200 billion, or 2 percent of the GDP, to prevent business-owners, employees, and the self-employed from financial ruin. These generous emergency measures mean companies will be able to shut up shop, employees stay at home, and parents take time off work to look after their children, without any of those affected needing to worry about where the next cent is coming from. To help them out further, Pedro Sánchez has agreed that anyone affected by the shutdown or by the actual Covid-19 virus – as a carer or patient – will get a stay of grace on their mortgages. Mortgage and rent Anyone who cannot pay their mortgage as a result of the crisis will not have to, and

this will not count as 'defaulting' or 'nonpayment'. In any case, the mortgage moratorium is in addition to a new law passed over a year ago which states that a homeowner cannot be evicted from his or her primary residence until he or she is in arrears by at least a year's worth of payments, or 20 percent of the debt, whichever is the largest. Utility companies – including mobile phone and internet providers – are not allowed to cut off anyone's supply due to non-payment for as long as the Covid-19 lockdown lasts. Sánchez's socialist government's coalition partners, left-wing Podemos, is pushing for the mortgage moratorium to extend to tenants, but this is more complicated and cannot be agreed at the stroke of a pen: authorities are conscious that some landlords live mostly or even entirely off rental income, and that for many, it is the rent that pays the mortgage on their properties. However, so far, Sánchez has urged landlords to be as flexible and understanding as possible if their tenants cannot pay because of the Covid-19 situation. Also, landlords who need the rent paid to cover the mortgage on their property – whether it is a second or subsequent property or a primary residence they are not currently living in – may be able to take advantage of the mortgage moratorium where their tenants cannot pay.

Praise for the community but worse to come Area health departments have praised the public for 'being so responsible' and 'pulling together for the greater good', and have largely been impressed by how patients who know their needs are not urgent are putting off visiting their GPs or out-of-hours walk-in clinics, in order to free up staff to attend to those infected with Covid-19. Even though the community cannot interact in person – meeting even a

close friend or family member in the street means a brief wave and then moving on, staying at least two metres apart – media and social media comments and headlines, and information from official sources, show that the spirit of a joint purpose and a need for cooperation is strong. The self-discipline seen across Spain in the last few days is equally as automatic and as tight in areas which

have barely been affected by the virus. Over half those affected are based in Madrid, and the majority of towns have very few cases at all – often as few as two or three, or none at all – but the public in general is acting with the same level of seriousness in every municipality in their determination to leave nothing to chance or to carelessness and ensure the virus is fully contained.

Cases due to peak Here in Alicante province and particularly in the local communities from La Marina to Pilar there have been few cases. However, it is during this week and the weekend that cases in Spain are predicted to peak, which means the virus is expected to spread and cases are expected to increase more than ever over the coming days.

Crackdown on citizens flouting lockdown: Borrowing dogs and fake shopping trips to stop Police across the Vega Baja have reported a crackdown on citizens flouting the lockdown. The rules of the State of Alarm mean that citizens are only allowed out of their homes and on public roads and highways for a very specific set of reasons including going to the health centre, pharmacy, to buy food, to go to work or to help an elderly dependant relative. A number of bars and restaurants have been issued with fines for not complying with the government decree to close. Officers in Alicante closed down and fined a bakery (which would have been allowed to open to sell bread) when it had been turned into a coffee shop (which would not have been permitted to open). Local Police were also called on to disperse groups of citizens, congregating in the city centre and other groups who were walking through streets together. Youngsters playing soccer were dispersed and sent home. A man walking along a street at 7.30am was stopped by police and questioned as to the reason for being out of his house. He first said he was going to buy bread, officers said that this wasn’t an emergency. He then claimed his wife was about to give birth and then finally said he had to bring food to his in-laws. Due to

inconsistencies of his claims, he was issued with a fine. A number of house parties were shut down after noise complaints and a kebab shop was fined after a queue had formed outside for takeaway food but no measures were being taken to enforce social distancing. Several people were fined in Alicante for taking turns to walk the same dog. An Elche man was fined for talking his dog two kilometres away from his home and in Orihuela, local police have taken to asking dog walkers for ID to ensure they are near home and not taking more time than necessary for the dog to relive itself. According to a report in Información, citizens who are further than 100 metres from home whole walking their dog could be in violation of the lockdown rules. Elche police fined a man who was carrying a bag of shopping around with him to make it look like he was on the way back from buying food (essential trips to the supermarket are allowed). To discourage others from doing the same, officers in some towns are asking citizens to show the receipts for their purchases to check the timestamp and shop address, and to ensure there is no trickery afoot. A number of traffic checkpoints are in place at key points throughout the Vega Baja to check that citizens are observing

new driving rules – one person per vehicle, essential journeys only. Workers using public roads to get to work are required to carry a certificate from their employer to prove they are indeed on the way to work. Police have called for citizen collaboration and request that, if any non-compliance is witnessed, please call 112 so that they can intervene. In Torrevieja during the first few days of lockdown alone, almost a hundred fines were issued to citizens for flouting regulations. Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, revealed that local security forces were issuing fines to citizens in Torrevieja for ignoring restrictions set down by the recent Royal Decree. To that end, military units from the Rabasa base in Alicante were drafted in and were seen patrolling the streets and urbanisations of Torrevieja in what many believed to be a show of force, reminding citizens to obey the rules. Citizens will only be able to leave their homes to go to and from work, attend health centres, buy food, medicine or basic necessities, take care of people who need it due to their dependency and also to go to financial or insurance entities. Dogs may go on short walks, just to meet their physiological needs, and without contact with other animals or people.

Coronavirus vaccine – how near are we? As the community struggles to cope with the State of Alarm and its implications, news about a vaccine or a cure for the coronavirus is a ray of hope for many. Scientists and medics across the globe are working together in the race to find a solution. Flu vaccines, arthritis medicine, HIV medication and even antimalaria drugs are being tested to check their effectiveness against Covid-19. The idea is that either a new

drug can be developed or, existing medication can be repurposed to halt the spread of the global pandemic. Usually, the development of a vaccine can take years. A virus is made up of microscopic, parasitic pieces of genetic material that replicate inside another organism. Vaccines, such as that for measles, are typically made out of weakened forms of the virus itself. The global scientific community is

now fast tracking results and bypassing the usual scientific steps – such as the animal testing phase – to find or develop a drug that will effectively treat and kill the virus that causes Covid-19. China leads the field The first country to fall victim to the virus is leading the field in the search for a vaccine. Back in December, China alerted the WHO (World Health Organisation) to several cases of an unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a city in the Hubei province with a population of 11 million people. At that stage, the virus and its implications were unknown. Chinese company, Beijing Advaccine Biotechnology is working with a US biotech company called Inovio Pharmaceuticals. They are in the process of developing a “DNA vaccine” called INO-4800. This vaccine is already at preclinical trial stage. INO-4800 will inject genetic material into a person which would trigger a stronger immune response in order that the person is better able to stop a potential infection. Human trials Elsewhere in China, news emerged this week that CanSino Biologics Inc. received Chinese regulatory approval to start human trials of a vaccine against the novel coronavirus. The vaccine, co-developed by the Hong Kong-listed company and China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences, will undergo clinical trials in Wuhan, CanSino Biologics said in a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Wednesday last. Under normal circumstances, a vaccine could take years to reach human clinical trials as scientists would

conduct a battery of animal testing first before officials would give the go ahead for further trials to determine its safety for human testing. Human trials in the United States of a potential vaccine called mRNA-1273 have already begun. Biotechnology company Moderna Therapeutics have injected four patients with the vaccine at a research facility in Seattle. Instead of creating the mRNA-1273 vaccine from the coronavirus, scientists copied a short segment of genetic code from the virus. Although human trials have already commenced, it could take 12 months for conclusive results. Worldwide progress JAPAN: In mid January, Japan became the first country to confirm a case of the coronavirus outside China. Japanese firm Fujifilm, famed as a photographic industry giant in its day, also manufactures a drug called Favipiravir. The drug appears to be effective in treating coronavirus, especially those with mild symptoms. EUROPE: Here in Europe, Germany’s BioNTech has emerged as a major player in terms of vaccine development. On Monday last it announced that it was working with Fosun Pharma in China to develop an experimental vaccine. The very next day, it confirmed it would collaborate with American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to develop the drug outside of China. It hopes to begin the testing phase in early April. Meanwhile, news emerged that the German government was trying to stop the Trump administration from trying to convince CureVac, another German medical manufacturer, to move its research to the US. German politicians insisted that no country should have a monopoly on any future vaccine. German newspapers reported that US President Donald Trump had offered funds to lure CureVac to the United States, and that the German government was making counter-offers to tempt it to stay. The US Ambassador in Germany denied the claims. How close is the cure? By the end of January, scientists in China were already looking into how existing medication might be repurposed in the fight against coronavirus. One of the first such drugs explored

in China with some success was an ant malaria medication chloroquine phosphate. Chinese officials confirmed in February that the drug has already been under clinical trial in more than 10 hospitals. According to officials there, patients treated with chloroquine saw a greater drop in fever, an improvement in their lung scans and required a shorter time to recover compared to control groups. Another drug currently being tested in China is a Swiss-made antiinflammation drug called Tocilizumab which suppresses overreactions by the immune system. American made antiviral drug remdesivir has also demonstrated promising results in trials with over 200 very ill patients. Remdesivir was originally developed by Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola patients. It had good results in the lab and during the animal testing phase but was less successful in the field. Nevertheless, global health experts have deemed it the most promising of possible treatments for people with severe cases of the virus. In France, pharmaceutical company Sanofi revealed that it can offer millions of doses of Plaquenil, an antimalarial drug which it claims is ‘promising’. The company said it could potentially treat 300,000 patients with Plaquenil and that it is also working with partner company, Regeneron on a clinical trial of rheumatoid arthritis drug Kevzara to check its efficacy. Promising news The Quantitative Biosciences Institute Coronavirus Research Group at the University of California has identified more than 50 drugs already on the market that may be effective in treating people infected with the virus. The group, consisting hundreds of scientists, has taken a different approach from many in the industry. Rather than looking for drugs that attack the virus itself, they are exploring drugs that will protect the proteins in our own cells that the coronavirus depends on to thrive and reproduce. With this type of treatment, our own systems will fight the virus. A project of this scale would usually take around two years to complete, but working together across 22 laboratories in the US, scientists managed the results in just a few weeks.

Coronavirus – myths debunked There are a lot of scams, rumours and ‘fake news’ doing the rounds on social media channels and whatsapp. It is important that citizens know what is true and what to ignore. Unfortunately, much of the fake news is quite convincing and can cause unnecessary worry. To combat the spread of fake news, Twitter has said it will work towards deleting tweets which spread misinformation. The site said tweets which place people at risk of contracting the illness would contravene its safety rules. Tweets which promote fake treatments for the coronavirus or deny expert guidance will be marked as harmful and removed, the social network site announced. Below, we have outlined some of the false information currently doing the rounds. You can self test for Coronavirus by holding your breath: NOT TRUE A message which is being shared again and again on WhatsApp and social media claims that holding your breath for more than ten seconds is an effective test for Covid-19. This claim is not true, according to multiple medical experts. The claim has been shared more than 30,000 times on Facebook in more than a dozen countries. The wording of the message varies, but often claims to include advice from ‘Taiwan experts’ and states there is a “simple self-check” a person can do to assess whether they have the virus. The wording usually also says something like, “Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without

coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness, etc, it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection.” World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic has said there is “no evidence” to support the claims. The only way you can know if you are infected for sure is to be tested. Silver cures Coronavirus, Salt water delays Cornavirus, etc: NOT TRUE As fears of the virus mount, so too do claims of snake oil treatments. As panic spreads, a cottage industry of fake and ineffective treatments is also spreading. Claims of the efficacy of air purifiers, vitamins and even bleach are doing the rounds. According to the World Health Organisation, none of these treatments prevent or cure the disease. Companies have already been reprimanded in the US for selling ‘silver solution’ – also known as colloidal silver – claiming it kills the virus. Elsewhere, businesses were selling hand sanitizer that did not contain alcohol, claiming it was effective in killing the virus. According to the World Health Organization, hand sanitizer must be made of at least 60% alcohol to help prevent COVID-19 infection. Online sellers were using Facebook to sell essential oils, such as tea tree and eucalyptus, for coronavirus – some even using ‘Corona’ as a discount code for its products. None of these are approved treatments or preventative measures against the disease. Drinking water will flush the virus into your stomach, where it will be killed by stomach acid: NOT TRUE This hoax comes in many forms and

claims to originate from a variety of universities, hospitals or medical experts. The message (doing the rounds on WhatApp and social media) contains a slew of ‘tips’ for curing coronavirus. Its most alarming claim is that drinking water every 15 minutes will wash coronavirus “down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus.” That claim is false, and has been debunked by multiple experts. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert with Vanderbilt University, told the Associated Press “We always caution anyone healthy and people who are sick to keep up fluid intake and keep mucus membranes moist. It makes you feel better, but there is no clear indication that it directly protects you against complications.” Inhaling hot air from a hair dryer will cure the coronavirus: NOT TRUE A YouTube video with nearly half a million views falsely and dangerously advises inhaling hot air from a hair dryer to cure the coronavirus. This is not true. Helicopters will be spraying disinfectant from the air in Torrevieja/Los Montesinos/other areas: NOT TRUE A message doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp claims (depending on the wording of the message as there are some variations) that “Tonight from 11:00 pm no one will be able to be on the street, close doors and windows 5 Air Force helicopters will spray disinfectant as part of the protocol to eradicate the Coronavirus, Please

Spread. Thank you so much.” Here on the Costa Blanca, the message is being shared in English and Spanish alike. Local police forces took to their own social media channels to reassure the population that this is a hoax. Stop and think before sharing If you get a message about Coronavirus, look at where it is coming from. Is there a reliable source cited in the message? Or, does the message claim that the information comes from a friend, someone they know,

neighbour or co-worker. A lot of the false news being spread right now is from people claiming that messages are from ‘a friend’ of theirs. Before sharing the message (and potentially, spreading unnecessary panic) have a look yourself – do a quick Google search and see if the information is being reported elsewhere. Snopes is an excellent resource to check if a message is a proven hoax.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP As everywhere across the world, everything in the UK has been accelerating at pace and the pound has paid the price. Whilst not always at the bottom of the pile, sterling has been struggling and hit a 35-year low against the US dollar. Measures to address all aspects of the crisis were well-received by investors as the chancellor rolled out an expanded programme of support for businesses including cash grants, the removal of business rates and more governmentbacked loans. As the week progressed and further measures were announced, including the planned closure of schools at the end of the week for all but children of key workers, the pound was less able to hold its ground. The employment statistics were ignored despite basic wages increasing more quickly than prices at 3.1% a year; the fact that unemployment ticked up to 3.9% and the overall outlook meant that it barely registered with investors. Towards the end of the week, the Bank of England cut rates to 0.1% and announced a GBP 200bn programme of quantitative easing but these measures seemed to do little to ease the crisis that faces sterling. The spectre of Brexit remains and the prospect of a no-deal departure looms on the horizon. These are set to be testing weeks for sterling and as

much will depend on the effectiveness of measures to spread the stem of the virus as business performance. The euro started the week relatively well as investors considered it might be a safe haven, but retreated as the days passed. EU finance ministers pledged to take action, but the meeting did not yield any concrete steps and the market is already weary of empty promises. One option would be to make use of the European Stability Mechanism’s €410 billion firefighting fund but to do so in a major way would require ratification by national parliaments. While most economic statistics are being ignored during the crisis, the market did take notice of the dramatic drop of economic sentiment in Germany and across Europe to -49.5, the lowest level in eight years and the euro made further losses against the US dollar. The European Central Bank announced another €750 billion of asset purchases – the “Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme” may counter some of the concerns that the ECB was failing to take action but as with all fiscal and economic measures at the moment, the spread of the virus is the number one priority for all and the currency’s fate lies in whether the current travel bans, shut downs and social distancing measures have the desired effect.

Consum shopping swapped for school food vouchers More than 22,500 students across the province will benefit from shopping vouchers in the first 15 days of lockdown. The initiative is aimed at disadvantaged families who currently receive full ‘beca’ grant – 100 percent reimbursement – for school meals, known as comedor. Under the new proviso each student will receive the equivalent of €60 to spend on food in Consum supermarkets. While the temporary suspension of face-to-face school lessons are in place to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Department of Education has confirmed that this replacement voucher scheme will be offered to relevant families and essentially offers free food to those who need it most. Minister for Education Vicent Marzà explains: "We have recently contacted several supermarket companies and in all cases there has been great co-operation to try to implement this measure. We have started this initiative with Consum because it already has a purchase voucher system which can quickly be adapted to the voucher for the acquisition of food for the most vulnerable students." In the province there are 83 establishments of this type and the voucher is "non-transferable, addressed to the father, mother or tutor of the beneficiary student and official ID must be presented to make it effective." The investment needed by the Education Department to carry out the transfer of these vouchers is 3.5 million euros.

Disinfection plan for Orihuela The COVID-19 Monitoring Committee set up in Orihuela, and under the direction of the Department of Emergencies, met recently with the heads of the Department of Urban Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, and Infrastructure, Ángel Noguera, as well as technicians of the corresponding departments. In the meeting the disinfection plans for different areas of the municipality have been formalised. These include pavements and entrances to supermarkets and grocery stores, Renfe Station and bus platform, canopies, entrances to medical centres, pharmacy doors, around health centres, municipal buildings with customer service, etc. In short, all those areas capable of bringing together several people at any given time, who go to those centres or establishments which have been declared essential. Specifically, four medium-capacity water tanks, two high-pressure washers and three large-capacity tanks will take to the streets to carry out these tasks. These will carry out the foundation work of cleaning with water. Subsequently, twelve teams of two people with sanitation backpacks have been formed, and these will carry out the disinfection on the previously cleaned area. The Department of Urban Cleaning and Street Cleaning began last week with the disinfection of containers and litter bins throughout the municipality.

Man in street dressed as TRex during lockdown While people all over Spain bunker down in their own homes as part of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, a Tyrannosaurus Rex was spotted running down an empty street. Okay, so it was a man dressed up in a T-Rex suit, but it’s certainly not what Spanish residents expected to see flying past their window. In footage filmed by a local resident and released by Murcia police department, the orange and red T-Rex can be seen being followed by police to the Jurassic Park theme tune. Officers can then be seen ordering the man home in the Vistalegre neighbourhood of the city, where a nation-wide minimum two week long lockdown has been ordered by officials. Sharing the video on Twitter, the police explained that lockdown laws only allow one person to be on the streets to walk their pet for a short distance so the animal can relieve itself. ‘Having a Tyrannosaurus Rex complex is not covered,’ the department joked, adding the #stayathome hashtag in Spanish. Everyone in Spain is currently banned from leaving their home, unless they are buying food or medicine, visiting medical centres or doing trips to assist the elderly or the young. Police chose not to fine the man, but ordered him to return to his home.

Concerts and Events Cancelled Andante International Choir has cancelled its three scheduled March performances of John Rutter’s Requiem because of the government-imposed lockdown. Plans are in place to perform the Requiem in the Costa Blanca area sometime after the Covid-19 crisis has subsided in Spain. The planned ‘Fiesta de la Paz’ music festival, which was scheduled to take place in San Miguel de Salinas on May 9th to mark 75 years of peace in Europe, has been cancelled. Also on hold is the Charity Auction which usually takes place on Tuesdays at the Club in Quesada, and the very popular Charity Market which takes place at the Emerald Isle in La Florida and to date, has been a vital source of income for local charities the Elche Children’s Care Home and the Jose Obrero orphanage. The U3A has also taken precautions to protect members during these unprecedented times. Spokesperson Barry Weston told the Costa Blanca People, “Due to the ongoing concerns and issues with the virus COVID-19 the committee met to discuss the safety and the way forward for the association and its members. Whilst we do not want to create unnecessary panic, or indeed offer

unsuitable advice, we have the safe keeping of you our members at the forefront of our thinking and therefore advise that as all bars and restaurants and almost all venues are closed all group leaders should cancel groups and events in line with various council’s advice. I would ask therefore that members take all necessary precautions to stay safe and well.” Torrevieja’s Auditorium has also been forced to make changes to its spring schedule in light of recent events. The opera, Don Giovanni, scheduled for March 26th has been cancelled. The concert by Torrevieja Symphony

Orchestra, scheduled for March 28th, which was to feature works by Scandinavian composers has also been cancelled. Some theatrical works have also been postponed to later dates. Tickets bought for cancelled shows can be refunded (via the same channel through which they were purchased – i.e online, or via the box office once it reopens). Tickets for postponed shows will be valid for the new dates. The Rojales Pantomime Group are committed to raising much needed money for various local charities whilst entertaining people and having fun in the process at their annual pantomime shows. Unfortunately, this year’s pantomime had to be cancelled but the show must go on and organisers are determined and looking forward to performing the fabulously funny TREASURE ISLAND at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San

Fulgencio in January 2021. Organisers told the Costa Blanca People, “As some of members are unable to carry on for various reasons, we are now looking for new members to join our merry band of thespians to either be part of our cast, help out backstage or join in the chorus. All of the cast are amateurs and really just enjoy giving their time to entertaining people so, even if you’ve never acted before, now is your chance. It’s fun and very rewarding. Our group

Let’s learn to draw! Culture fix on We’re all facing the challenges of isolation and boredom at the moment – so this is a good time to try something new. If you’ve always wanted to learn to draw, now is your chance. For the next few weeks I will be writing short articles in the Costa Blanca People to get you started on the basics, and have also created a new Facebook page, which you are welcome to join. The page is Costa Blanca Art Community where you can upload your drawings and paintings for comment by me – and your fellow artists. I will also give projects and suggest videos, as well as advice on your work. And for now, it’s completely free. So what do you need to get started? Very little really. If you are a complete beginner you can start with some printer paper and pencils – and a rubber! It’s not a good idea to launch into painting until you have mastered the rudiments of drawing, because you will inevitably be disappointed by the results. The main thing you have to learn – is to look. We never observe anything minutely unless we plan to draw it, but then you have decide on where the light is coming from, where are the shadows, what shapes (negative spaces) are left between objects. Get the negative spaces right and everything else falls into place. So – set up a few objects from you kitchen in a good light – for instance a wine bottle, glass, some fruit or vegetables and have ago at drawing them. Look at the shapes they make, how big are they in relation to each other. Look at this picture closely and try to see how objects are in proportion to each other. For example, the neck of the bottle is about 1/3 of it’s height and 1/3 the width

of the bottle. The top of the glass and the two peaches make a triangle. Check, where does the top of the glass line up with the bottle and are the peaches bigger or small than the bowl of the glass? The look at the shadow that tell

you which way the light is coming from. There’s no substitute for actually drawing – so have a go and send me your efforts on the Facebook page. More info on www.sue-stokes.co.uk

Torremolinos

In 2013 it had 69,389 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city in the province. The township has an area of 20 km² and a population density of 3,153.85 inhabitants/km², which is multiplied during the summer months. It is particularly popular with British, Irish and Scandinavian tourists and has a large British expatriate population. Areas of the town are spotted with older high-rise residential buildings and hotels but height limits on new developments and a significant number of original old town properties, have kept the town centre much more open than other popular resorts such as Benidorm and Fuengirola. The beach which extends for nearly 8 kilometres, has cycle and skating lanes alongside the fully illuminated promenade and features many chiringuitos and beach bars. The Eastern end of the beach known as Los Alamos has live dance music events throughout the Summer. The easternmost parts of the beach have kite surfing and windsurfing except under the flight path of the airport. There are two separate beach lifts, a wheelchair accessible footpath and steps from the town centre to the beach. Though there are many parking spaces on the beach road, it is almost impossible to park in the Summer months. The town centre does have many underground car parks however. History Archaeological finds including human bones, tools, and pottery prove that the Torremolinos area was settled as early as the Neolithic Age. Some remnants are neanderthalians and dated 150,000 years old by radiocarbon dating. According to the Egyptian Greek geographer Ptolemy, the Phoenicians had founded here a colony named Saduce, but the Romans are the most likely to have founded the current town, as shown by findings of edifices and a necropolis (from whose size it has been deduced that the settlement had around 2,000 inhabitants). They also built the road joining Cadiz with Málaga, passing through Torremolinos. With the Moorish conquest of Spain, were introduced the mills from which the town takes its name (meaning “Tower of the Mills”). However, at the time the population was reduced; the tower was built by the Nasrid rulers of Granada starting from 1300. After the fall of Granada, the town remained subject to North African pirate attacks which lasted from the 18th century; during the War of Spanish Succession, the town was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch flotilla under the British admiral George Rooke and almost entirely destroyed. The mills and the city were rebuilt in the early 20th century,

but the mill industry started to decline in the 1920s. It was largely replaced by an increasing tourist interest from 1928, particularly British visitors. Hotel Pez Espada opened in 1960. The first gay bar in Spain, Toni’s Bar, was founded in Torremolinos in 1962. Pre-Roman According to Ptolemy, Phoenicians built the city of Saduce next to Torremolinos. The Romans constructed a road to connect Gades (Cádiz) with Malaca (Málaga). In the 1990s a Roman necropolis was discovered with 23 graves at the “San Luis build” at Cantabria’s square, which confirm the existence of village with 2,000 years old. Middle Ages Around 1300, the Muslim dynasty of the “Nazríes”, which governed Málaga between the 13th and 15th centuries, built the defensive tower that can be seen at the end of San Miguel Street. The tower is 12 metres (39’37 ft.) tall and was built with earth. It is composed of two floors and watch windows to the sea and a terrace. Before French revolution After the Christian conquered the kingdom of Granada, Torremolinos was attacked by pirates until the 18th century. During the War of Spanish succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet, commanded by the British Admiral George Rooke, looted and burned the houses and mills and destroyed all of Torremolinos. A census of 1,769 shows a population of 106 people. Modern age During the first half of the 19th century the town was rebuilt and by 1849 there were 14 mills, a fuller mill Kraft paper and 785 inhabitants. With the demise of the mill, Torremolinos became a small fishing village until the end of the 1950s when it became one of the first tourist centre in Costa del Sol. In the 1950s many celebrities visited Torremolinos such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra. In 1959 Pez Espada hotel was opened, the first luxury hotel along the coast. In the following years, new hotels, nightclubs and others tourist establishments changed the face of the town and its beaches. By the year 1965, Torremolinos had become consolidated as a major tourist destination.

WATER DIVINATION Water Scrying is an ancient form of divination which is a practise known as 'hydromancy', 'Crystal gazing' and 'Oculomancy'. It's also referred to as the ancient art of revelation as those performing this scrying ritual will, via their second sight, see future images forming in the water. Water scrying is a form of divination I love to use when performing angel spells, particularly during the full moon as it's connected to the lunar tides of the sea, and natural cycles of the moon. The full moon is a symbol of intuition,

wisdom and divine magic and therefore a perfect conduit in performing water scrying. Water, is one of the simplest forms of divination which has been practised throughout history. The earliest mention of scrying was during the 10th century in the 'Shahnameh' which is an Ancient Persian text. Nostradamus wrote about staring into a bowl of water by candlelight in order to gain inspiration in his notes from the 1500's. The Ancient Romans performed water scrying in their religious rituals, and the Celtics

were known as 'Seers' as they gazed into the reflective surface of the water in order to see the future. Because the art of scrying relies on one's second sight, it helps us to connect with the realm of our soul as it goes beyond the 5 senses of Touch (somatosensation), Sight (vision) Taste (gustation), Smell (Olfaction), Hearing (Audition). The British public (not on enforced lockdown) have taken to staying in more – that’s if TV viewing figures are anything to go by. Especially popular are the traditional news broadcasts. Despite having a constant stream of news available on mobile devices and social media, it seems the British public is turning to traditional state broadcasting channels for reliable information on the coronavirus pandemic. Almost 8.7m people tuned into the BBC Six O’Clock News on Wednesday night the highest figure recorded since Christmas Day 2008 and more than twice the average audience from last year. The BBC News channel also reached 11.7m adults last week, marking the strongest weekly viewing figures since the Paris terror attacks in 2015. ITV News has also benefitted from increased interest, with its lunchtime bulletin attracting the largest audience since New Year’s Day 2014 and doubling its ratings year on year. Meanwhile, Channel 4 News’ weekday

7pm programme saw an 18 per cent increase in viewer numbers, reaching its highest peak since Christmas Eve 2008 on Monday night. “These are testing times but never has public service broadcast news been more important, to verify the facts, inform the public and seek out the truth,” said Ben de Pear, editor of Channel 4 News. “All of our staff are going beyond the call of duty to bring the news to the country and we are pleased that our TV audience has increased so significantly and that our position as the most viewed TV news programme on social media is delivering our journalism to an even bigger audience on digital platforms.” TV news programming has suffered a steady decline in audience numbers in recent years as an increasing number of Brits consume news online and through social media. Perhaps the uncertainty and distrust of online news is pushing viewers back to traditional broadcasting.

Mental Health Focus How to stay head healthy during lockdown With the arrival of COVID-19, we are all experiencing some degree of disruption to daily life. For most of us, these disruptions are thankfully not lifethreatening and consist of things like school and event cancellations, working from home, and postponed travel plans. Our specific circumstances vary, but we share this opportunity to find meaning in this new and surreal experience. In times of crisis, people have instinctively come together to share experiences, show solidarity, and to help each other. This social support has proven to be an important factor in protecting against the negative impact that these events can have on our mental health. The outbreak of the coronavirus is unprecedented in that the advice to selfisolate and distance ourselves from others is the exact opposite of what we as human beings want to do in times of crisis. Here are some tips for minding your mental health during the lockdown: Stay connected Advances in mobile technology in particular mean that we can stay connected through calls, text, WhatsApp, email etc. Use this time to get in contact with people. Contribute to a sense of togetherness that is going to be pivotal in our ability to cope both now and in the weeks ahead. Try to connect with people who you haven't heard from in a while or people in your community who are likely to be isolated right now. The additional time at home can bring tension but it can

also be an ideal opportunity to reconnect and strengthen relationships within the family. Limit social media usage While staying digitally active, it is also important to carefully choose your news and media sources, particularly if some of the information you are receiving is leaving you feeling overwhelmed. Choosing one or two well-informed sources such as the HSE and WHO and limiting yourself to set times during the day to check for updates, can help to protect you from overwhelm and confusion. Remember that some of the information online is driven by the views, opinions and agendas of individuals, and it may not be helpful for you to take those on as your own right now. Maintain healthy sleep habits The negative impact of sleep disruption on mood is well-established. Without the structure of having to get to school, college or the workplace, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy sleep habits like going to bed later and getting up later. Changes to your sleep cycle now could go on to impact your mood in the weeks and months ahead. Scheduling a balanced range of activities in your day - including physical exercise, connecting with others and pleasant and relaxing activities - can also help with your sleep quality. If the uncertainty of the current situation is causing you to lose sleep, talk about your worries with others rather than ruminating on them alone. Time for self-care Remember the advice of every flight

attendant in the case of an emergency landing. Passengers are advised to put on their own oxygen mask first before attempting to help others. We each have a responsibility, particularly in times like this, to practise self-care. Ultimately, we are less likely to be of use to ourselves or others if we are overstretched or our resources are depleted. This could mean preparing balanced and nourishing meals for yourself, taking time to engage in things that you enjoy or find relaxing and identifying the smells, textures, visuals, and tastes that you find soothing personally. An important part of self-care is setting up the structures around yourself that will protect you from burning out. In the busy-ness of 21st century life, we can find it hard to introduce and consistently implement self-care in our everyday lives. Take the opportunity to sample some activities such as meditation, yoga, baking, reading etc. Think of the small changes which you could bring with you into life post-coronavirus. Top tips • Set your alarm and get up after 8 hours of sleep • Get showered and dressed • Exercise for one or two 30 minute sessions a day • Limit social media time • Use on line services productively to take a language course or meditate • Set a routine or times to do specific tasks – reading, cleaning, cooking etc • Speak to friends and family regularly use video calls to stay connected • Get out (alone) to food-shop every few days (if you can’t do daily dog walks)

What Happens if I Don’t Pay a Traffic Fine? According to statistics, most drivers have been or will be caught out committing a driving offence at some point. The most common reasons are improper parking, speeding or even using their mobile whilst stopped at a traffic light. These days, many of the fines are issued remotely, with drivers caught out by one of the many cameras around the road network, or even by Pegasus on the DGT’s helicopters. If you received a fine and it genuinely wasn’t you, perhaps you’d let someone else drive your car, or even your number plate may have been cloned, it might just be a genuine mistake by the system, whatever the reason, there is a process of contesting the fine, the details of which are published in English on the DGT’s website, dgt.es. However, on this occasion, what if it was you but you just choose not to pay it. What then are the consequences of ignoring or failing to pay a traffic fine? We will tell you. The first point we must make is that there are benefits to having a Spanish driving licence, changing your UK one for a Spanish one if you are living in Spain. If you have a UK licence and you are stopped to be dealt with for a traffic violation, you are treated as a tourist and, as such, you have to pay the fine on the spot, with a risk of your vehicle being immediately impounded if you don’t or can’t. As a Spanish licence holder, you don’t have to pay on the spot and, even better, most fines have a discount for prompt payment. The fine is reduced by 50% if it is paid within 20 calendar days following its notification (either by hand or by postal mail). During this period of time,

the fine may also be appealed, presenting the allegations and the evidence deemed necessary up to 30 days after it was received. But what if this period has passed, either inadvertently or intentionally, what happens next? After the initial time allowance, a new period known as an executive procedure begins. If no payment has been made in the voluntary period, the sanction becomes fixed and the fine will arrive with a surcharge of 5% (now without the possibility of a 50% discount). This step will be carried out automatically and without the need to notify you. You have been warned! Once that period has passed, remember there is no obligation for you to be notified again, it is the Tax Agency who takes over the matter. They will then notify you with what is known as an enforcement order, a document indicating that the fine is applied, now with a 10% surcharge and a new payment period. If you continue with the intention of not paying, there will be a new notification, this time with a surcharge of 20% and a new deadline for payment.

Once this option has been exhausted, the matter becomes even more serious and you will be informed that the normal procedures have not been satisfactorily settled. It is now, after a relatively short space of time, that the Tax Agency begins to seize the assets in order to settle the account, for example taking the money from your bank account. If you have no money in your account then the Tax Agency can obtain it through other revenue streams, such as direct from your salary or pension. If you still haven’t got enough to pay, then the next stage is for the Tax Agency to seize assets, such as real estate for example. In short, as a Spanish licence holder, if you get fined you can often get a 50% discount of you own up and pay it promptly. If not, the fine is likely to end up doubled, taken from your bank or salary without you having any opportunity to contest it, not even on the basis of having bills to pay or needing to eat, and, ultimately, your assets could be seized, to which we conclude, if you did commit the offence it is far better to pay promptly and learn from it, not repeating the infraction again.

Mandatory Equipment When Driving in Spain It is important to make sure that you are carrying all the equipment in your vehicle that Spanish Traffic Law demands. There is often a lot of confusion about this equipment, mostly seemingly due to changes in the law over recent years. The only equipment which the law demands in your vehicle is>

Spare Wheel and Tools to Change the Wheel – Some modern vehicle don´t have a spare wheel but rather an emergency repair kit. If it came as standard on your vehicle then that is acceptable. High Visibility Jacket – The law only states that one is required but we recommend that you carry one for every occupant in the vehicle as these are life savers. Warning Triangles – Two warning triangles are required in order to protect the vehicle from behind and the front.

Fire Extinguisher – A fire extinguisher is mandatory if you are towing a trailer, which could be a caravan, burger van, or just a small trailer for carrying garden clippings for example, if you are towing any kind of trailer then a fire extinguisher is mandatory. Although it is not mandatory to carry them, it is also recommended that you have a small first aid kit and a torch. It is no longer mandatory to carry spare light bulbs or a spare pair of spectacles (if you wear them). Both of these items used to be mandatory, but the law was changed. Replacing a bulb in a modern car is not such as easy task, and usually requires a mechanic with specialist tools, so carrying spare bulbs became unnecessary. Regarding spectacles, although the law no longer requires the carrying of a spare pair, it is advisable as you will not be able to drive without them. Your driving licence may contain a code which indicates to the police that you should be wearing them, but more importantly your safety will be compromised if your vision is not as clear as it should be.
